Tremors of Degradation

I dreamed that I myself was dreaming.I did not know where I myself was, but before my eyes was the interior of a small room shut tight in the depths of night, and yet I also saw, upon the roof, a dense forest of houseleek growing among the tiles.

The lampshade on the wooden table was of a new style, and it lit the room with unusual brightness. In the light, on the broken couch, beneath a hairy, formidable mass of flesh she had not known before, a thin and tiny body trembled with hunger, pain, astonishment, shame, and joy.Her skin, slack yet still full, grew smooth and glossy;her pale, sallow cheeks flushed with a faint red, like rouge-water smeared on lead.

Even the lamp flame shrank back in fright, and the east had already begun to whiten.

……。Yet in the air there still surged, diffuse and swaying, waves of hunger, pain, astonishment, shame, and joy……

!』'Mama!' A girl of about two, startled awake by the sound of the door opening and closing, cried out on the floor in the corner of the room enclosed by straw matting.

!』'It's still early, sleep a little longer!' she said, flustered.

'Mama!I'm hungry, my stomach hurts.?』What will we have to eat today?'

'We'll have something to eat today.。』In a little while the sesame-cake seller will come, and Mama will buy some for you.' Gratified, she clutched still more tightly the small silver coin in her palm, her low voice trembling with sorrow, and she went over to the corner to look at her daughter, moved aside the straw mat, picked her up, and laid her on the broken couch.

。』'It's still early, sleep a little longer,' she said, and as she spoke she raised her eyes and, with nothing to tell it to, glanced at the sky above the shabby, broken roof.

Suddenly another great wave rose in the air, crashing against the one before, whirling into a vortex that engulfed everything, myself included, so that neither mouth nor nose could draw breath.

I woke groaning; outside the window the moonlight lay silver over everything, and dawn seemed still very far away.

I did not know where I myself was, but before my eyes was the interior of a small room shut tight in the depths of night; I myself knew that I was continuing a broken dream. But the time of the dream was now separated by many years.Inside and outside the room everything was now so neat and orderly;inside were a young husband and wife and a brood of small children, all turned toward an aged woman with resentment and contempt.

『!』'We have no face to show anyone, and it's all because of you,' the man said angrily. 'You still think you raised her well, but in fact you did nothing but bring her suffering — it would have been better if she'd starved to death as a child!'

It's you who have wronged me my whole life!' the woman said.

!』'And you've dragged me down with you as well!' the man said.

!』'And dragged them down too!' the woman said, pointing at the children.

The smallest one, who had been playing with a dry reed leaf, now waved it through the air as though it were a steel blade, and shouted loudly: 'Kill!'

The corners of the aged woman's mouth were twitching convulsively; she started for a moment, then all at once grew calm, and before long she rose to her feet, coldly, like a stone statue, gaunt to the bone. She opened the wooden door and strode out into the depths of night, leaving behind her all the cold curses and venomous laughter.

She walked on and on through the depths of night, walking all the way to the boundless wilderness;on every side lay wasteland, overhead only the high sky, and not a single insect or bird flew past.Naked, bare-bodied, she stood like a stone statue in the middle of the wilderness, and in a single instant she saw illuminated all that had passed: hunger, pain, astonishment, shame, joy — and so, trembling; suffering, wronging, being dragged down — and so, convulsion;。……kill — and so, stillness.…………。And in another instant she fused it all together: attachment and renunciation, tenderness and vengeance, nurture and annihilation, blessing and cursing……Then she raised both hands as high as she could toward the sky, and from between her lips there escaped a language of both human and beast, one not possessed by this human world, and therefore wordless.

As she uttered this wordless language, her whole body — great as a stone statue, yet already ruined, degenerate — trembled all over. This trembling was speckled like fish scales, each scale rising and falling like water boiling over a fierce fire;仿and at once the air quivered together with her, like the waves of a desolate sea in a storm.

Then she raised her eyes toward the sky, and even the wordless language fell utterly silent; there remained only the trembling, radiating like sunlight, which made the waves in the air whirl at once, as though struck by a hurricane, surging and racing across the boundless wilderness.

I was in the grip of a nightmare, yet I myself knew it was because I had laid my hand upon my chest;and in my dream I still used all the strength I had in my whole life, trying to move that exceedingly heavy hand away.

What it’s about

A dream inside a dream, in two scenes many years apart. In the first, a small hut is shut against the night; a new-style lampshade lights the room brightly, and on a broken bed, under an unfamiliar hairy body, a thin small woman shakes with hunger, pain, surprise, shame and joy. The lamp shrinks back as though frightened; the east is going white. A girl of about two, woken by the door opening and shutting, calls from the corner of the floor that she is hungry and her stomach hurts and what will they have to eat today — and her mother, gripping the small piece of silver in her hand, says in a low trembling voice that today there will be food, that she will buy her a sesame cake when the seller comes by, lifts her onto the bed, tells her it is early yet and to sleep a little longer, and looks up with nobody to tell at the sky above the broken roof.

The second scene is the same room long afterwards, tidy now: a young husband and wife and a crowd of children, all facing an old woman with contempt. It is because of you that we cannot show our faces, the man says; you think you brought her up, but you ruined her, better she had starved as a child. You are what has wronged me all my life, says the wife. And she drags us down. And them too — pointing at the children. The smallest, playing with a dried reed leaf, swings it in the air like a sword and shouts: kill! The old woman's mouth twitches, then everything in her goes still; she stands up cold and bone-thin as a stone statue, opens the plank door and walks out into the deep night, leaving all the abuse behind her. She walks until the waste has no edge, sky overhead and not an insect or a bird crossing it, and stands naked at the centre of it, and in one instant sees everything that has been — hunger, pain, surprise, shame, joy; then trembling, ruin, injustice, the dragging-down; then the convulsion, the word kill, and the calm. She lifts both hands to the sky, and out from between her lips comes a wordless language, of human and of beast, that does not exist in this world; and her body, huge as a statue and long since ruined, shakes all over, scale by scale, each scale rising and falling like water boiling on a fierce fire, until the air shakes with it like the waves of a wild sea in a storm. The dreamer wakes out of the nightmare knowing perfectly well what caused it — his own hand lying on his chest, which he had been using all his strength in the dream to shift.

When it was written 背景

Dated 29 June 1925. The title names what the piece ends on: the shuddering of a body whose lines have gone slack and ruined, which is the only answer the old woman is given. Her trade is never named in a single word — the first scene says it entirely through the small coin, the strange body and the child's hunger — and the second scene is the family that was bought with it turning on her. It is the hardest page in the collection to read for feeling, and among the hardest for grammar: the two scenes are joined only by the repeated list 飢餓、苦痛、驚異、羞辱、歡欣, the narrator dreams that he is dreaming and says so, and the last paragraphs run on in single sentences that keep expanding. Read 死後 next for the same waking trick used as comedy.
