Warning of the Gold and Silver Horned Kings at Level-Top Mountain

032Chapter 32

西The tale tells how Tang Seng, having recovered Sun Xingzhe, master and disciples were now of one heart and one body, together making their way to the West.西Ever since rescuing the princess at Elephantia (Baoxiang Guo), they had been escorted by ruler and ministers out through the western gate of the city.沿There is no need to tell in full how, along the road, they ate when hungry and drank when thirsty, rested at night and journeyed at dawn.It happened just then to be the season of mid-spring, at which time:

As master and disciples were traveling along enjoying the scenery, they saw once more a mountain blocking the road.:「。」:「Tang Seng said, "Disciples, be careful — ahead we meet a high mountain, and I fear there may be tigers and wolves barring the way." Xingzhe said, "Master, one who has left the household should not talk like one still in it.Do you remember the words of the Wuchao Monk's Heart Sutra: 'The mind free of hindrance — only without hindrance is there no fear, and one is far removed from upside-down dreams and delusions'?:『Only this: 'Sweep away the filth upon the heart, wash clean the dust at the ear's edge.。』?」:「If you do not endure the bitterest of bitterness, it is hard to become a man above other men.' Do not trouble yourself with worry — as long as old Sun is here, even should the sky collapse, I can guarantee no harm will come; what is there to fear from tigers and wolves?" The elder reined in his horse and said, "I—"

:「Hearing this, Xingzhe laughed heartily and said, "If the master wants ease of body, what difficulty is there in that?Once the task is accomplished, all entanglements will end, and every dharma will be empty.?」At that time, quite naturally, will that not be ease of body?" Hearing these words, the elder had no choice but to take joy and forget his cares.Loosening the reins, they urged on the silver dun horse; tightening the bridle, they hurried the jade dragon steed.

Master and disciples climbed up the mountain, which was extremely steep and dangerous, truly towering and rugged. What a mountain:

The elder reined in his horse to look at the mountain, and just at the point where the path grew hard to travel, he saw on a green mossy slope a woodcutter standing there. You ask how he was dressed:

That woodcutter:

:「:『。』?」:「。」Called out in a stern, loud voice to the elder, "You, elder heading west, stop a moment — I have something to tell you: on this mountain there is a band of poisonous fiends and vicious monsters who specialize in devouring travelers passing east to west." Hearing this, the elder's soul flew and his spirit scattered; trembling, he could not sit steady in his carved saddle, and hastily turning his head, he called urgently to his disciples, "Listen to what that woodcutter reports: 'On this mountain there are poisonous fiends and vicious monsters.' Who dares go and question him closely?" Xingzhe said, "Master, set your mind at ease — let old Sun go and ask him the truth of the matter."

」,Splendid Xingzhe — he strode off and went straight up the mountain, and calling out "Elder Brother" to the woodcutter, made a bow of greeting.:「?」:「西The woodcutter returned the greeting and said, "Elder, what reason brings you here?" Xingzhe said, "I won't hide it from you, elder brother — we have been sent from the Land of the East to fetch scriptures from the Western Heaven. The one on the horse is my master; he is somewhat timid.Just now you were kind enough to instruct us that there are some poisonous fiends and vicious monsters here, so I have come to ask respectfully: how many years has this demon been a demon, how many years has this monster been a monster? Is it a seasoned hand, or still a fledgling?。」:「。」:「。」:「便?」:「I trouble you, elder brother, to tell me plainly, so that I may have the mountain god and the local earth deity escort him away." Hearing this, the woodcutter looked up to the sky and laughed loudly, saying, "So you are a mad monk after all." Xingzhe said, "I am not mad — this is honest talk." The woodcutter said, "You say it is honest, but how dare you speak of having him escorted away?" Xingzhe said, "You go on building up his prestige like this, spouting nonsense to block the road and give a warning — could it be you are related to him?。」:「If not kin, then surely a neighbor; if not a neighbor, then surely a friend." The woodcutter laughed and said, "You mad, reckless monk, you are quite unreasonable.I meant well, and came especially to warn you, so that as you travel you would take precautions morning and night — and instead you turn around and blame it on me.Setting aside that I do not know where the demon comes from — even if I did know, how would you dare escort him off??」:「Escort him to where?" Xingzhe said, "If he is a heavenly demon, he is escorted to the Jade Emperor;if he is an earthly demon, he is escorted to the Bureau of Earth.西Those of the West belong under the Buddha, those of the East under the Sages;those of the North are handed to Zhenwu, those of the South to the God of Fire.If he's a flood-dragon spirit, he goes to the Lord of the Sea; if he's a ghostly apparition, he goes to King Yama. Each has its own region and direction.。」Old Sun knows people everywhere he goes — I'll issue a warrant, and have him escorted off at a flying run through the night."

:「。」:「?」:「The woodcutter could not help but give a cold laugh, "Ha ha," and said, "You mad, reckless monk, I suppose you've been wandering the regions and picked up a bit of the art of writing talismans and chanting spells over water — fit only for driving off petty evils and binding minor ghosts, but you have not yet met a monster as vicious as this one." Xingzhe said, "How do you know he is vicious?" The woodcutter said, "This mountain, by the path, is some six hundred li across, and is called Level Peak Mountain (Pingding Shan). In the mountain there is a cave called Lotus Cave (Lianhua Dong). In the cave there are two demon chiefs; they draw likenesses and sketch portraits, seeking to capture monks;they copy out names and inquire after surnames, seeking to eat Tang Seng.。」:「。」:「。」:「If you had come from anywhere else it would still be all right, but since you bear the single word 'Tang,' do not even think of getting through — not a chance, not a chance." Xingzhe said, "We are indeed from the Tang dynasty." The woodcutter said, "Then he means precisely to eat you." Xingzhe said, "What good fortune, what good fortune.?」:「?」:「But I wonder just how he goes about eating people?" The woodcutter said, "How would you like him to eat you?" Xingzhe said, "If he eats the head first, that would still be rather fun;。」:「but if he eats the feet first, that would be hard to bear." The woodcutter said, "What do you mean, eating the head first??」:「What do you mean, eating the feet first?" Xingzhe said, "You have never yet gone through it, so you wouldn't know.If he eats the head first, biting it off in one mouthful, I would already be dead, and however he might fry, roast, stew, or boil me after that, I would feel no pain. But if he eats the feet first, gnawing the ankle bones, chewing the shin, eating up to the waist and spine, and I still don't manage to die quickly — would that not mean suffering it bit by bit, piece by piece?。」:「。」:「That is why it would be hard to bear." The woodcutter said, "Monk, he doesn't have that much time to spare — he simply catches you, binds you up in a cage, and steams you whole to eat." Xingzhe laughed and said, "That would be even better, even better.。」:「調The pain, I could bear well enough not to fear it — it's only that I'd have to endure a bit of stifling misery, that's all." The woodcutter said, "Monk, don't talk glibly. That demon carries five treasures on his person, and his magic powers are vast and far-reaching indeed.。」:「?」:「。」:「He is like the very jade pillar that props up heaven, the golden beam that spans the sea — even if you manage to protect the Tang monk on his way, you will still have to faint dead away three or four times, that much is certain." Xingzhe said, "Faint how many times?" The woodcutter said, "You'll need to faint three or four times, surely." Xingzhe said, "No matter, no matter.。」In the course of a year, we commonly faint seven or eight hundred times — these three or four faints are easily managed; we'll just faint them off one after another and be done with it."

Splendid Great Sage — utterly without fear, his whole heart set only on protecting Tang Seng.:「Breaking away from the woodcutter, he strode back and went straight to the front of the horse on the mountain slope, saying, "Master, there is nothing much the matter.便There may indeed be a monster or two here, it's only that the people of this place are timid, and take it too much to heart. With me here, what is there to fear from him?。」Let us travel on, let us travel on." Hearing this, the elder had no choice but to set his mind at ease and follow along.Just as they were traveling on, suddenly the woodcutter was nowhere to be seen.:「?」:「。」:「The elder said, "How is it that the woodcutter who brought us the warning has vanished?" Bajie said, "Our luck is poor — we've run into a daytime ghost." Xingzhe said, "I suppose he went off into the woods to gather firewood.。」Let me go and have a look."

Splendid Great Sage — opening wide his fiery golden eyes, he scanned across the whole mountain and over every ridge, but there was no trace to be found.」,:「?」:「Suddenly raising his head, he looked up into the clouds and saw it was the Duty God of the Day (Rizhi Gongcao); he at once rode the clouds up to catch him, cursed him a few times as "hairy ghost," and said, "Why is it that when you have something to say you don't come and say it straight out, but instead transform yourself like that to fool old Sun?" Flustered, the Duty God bowed and said, "Great Sage, forgive me for being late in bringing word, forgive me, forgive me.That demon truly has vast magic powers and countless transformations. You need only rely on your own cleverness and skill, and set your divine wits in motion, to guard your master with the utmost care;西。」for if you should grow the least bit careless, there will be no hope at all of reaching the Western Heaven."

Hearing this, Xingzhe scolded the Duty God away, keeping the warning most earnestly in his heart, and bringing his cloud down, he went straight back up the mountain. There he saw the elder, with Bajie and Sha Seng, pressing forward together.:「He thought to himself in secret: "If I tell my master truthfully every word the Duty God said, my master will be no good at handling it, and will surely burst into tears;:『。』but if I do not tell him the truth, and simply lead him on with his head in a fog, as the saying goes, 'Entering a reed marsh for the first time, one does not know its depth.' If he should be snatched away by the demon, would that not again put old Sun to great trouble?Let me first give Bajie a bit of attention — first send him out ahead to fight a battle with the monster and see how it goes.If he manages to defeat him, that shall count as one merit to his credit;。」:「便if he has no skill for it and is captured by the monster, there will still be time enough for old Sun to go and rescue him — and that would serve nicely to make my own abilities known." As he was reckoning thus to himself, weighing it in his own heart, he thought further: "I only fear that Bajie will shirk and be lazy, and refuse to go out ahead, and that the master, besides, tends to favor and shield him.。」Let old Sun rein him in a bit, then, and hold him to it."

Splendid Great Sage — watch him put on a show: he rubbed his eyes and rubbed them again, until he rubbed out a few tears. He went to meet the master, walking straight on ahead.:「。」:「?」:「When Bajie saw this, he hastily called out, "Sha Monk, set down the carrying-pole, take out the baggage — let the two of us divide it up." Sha Seng said, "Second Elder Brother, divide it for what?" Bajie said, "Let's divide it and be done — you go back to the Flowing Sands River and be a monster again, and old Hog will go back to Gao Lao Village to look in on his wife. We'll sell the white horse, buy a coffin, and see the master off to his rest. Then everyone can scatter and go their own way — who's still going on to the Western Heaven?" The elder, hearing this from atop his horse, said, "You clumsy creature! We're in the middle of the road — why are you talking such nonsense again?" Bajie said, "It's your own son who's talking nonsense.Don't you see Sun Xingzhe coming this way crying? He is a fine fellow who can bore through the sky and burrow into the earth, who fears neither axe nor fire nor even the boiling oil cauldron;and now here he comes wearing a cap of sorrow, his eyes brimming with tears — this must mean the mountain is steep and dangerous and the monsters are fierce and vicious.?」:「。」:「Weak and soft creatures like us — how could we ever get through?" The elder said, "Do not talk such nonsense for now — let me ask him myself and see what he has to say." So he asked, "Wukong, if you have something on your mind, discuss it with me openly — why are you troubling yourself alone like this??」:「。」 『?』」:「Wearing such a tear-streaked, mournful face — is it that a tiger has frightened me?" Xingzhe said, "Master, the one who just brought word was the Duty God of the Day; he said the monster is fierce and vicious, and this place is hard to pass through — indeed the mountain is high and the road steep, and we cannot go forward. Let us go some other day instead." Hearing this, the elder was thrown into fear and dread, and clutching at his tiger-skin skirt, he said, "Disciple, we have already traveled a stage and a half of our three-stage journey — why do you now speak words of retreat and regret?" Xingzhe said, "It is not that I fail to give my whole heart to it, but I fear there are too many demons and my strength too little, my forces too isolated. 'Even were I a solid block of iron, how many nails could be forged from it at the smithy?'" The elder said, "Disciple, what you say is indeed true — a single man alone would truly find it hard.:『。』調使?」The Art of War says, 'The few cannot withstand the many.' But I still have Bajie and Sha Seng here, both your fellow disciples — deploy and use them as you see fit, whether as guardian officers or helping hands, joining forces and hearts as one, to clear the mountain path and lead me across the mountain — would that not bring us all at last to the true fruits of enlightenment?"

All this show of squirming and hedging that Xingzhe put on was simply to draw out these very words from the elder.:「Wiping away his tears, he said, "Master, if we are to get past this mountain, Bajie must agree to do two things for me, and then there is a thirty-percent chance of getting through;。」:「but if he will not follow my instructions, and cannot take my place in this, there is not even the slightest hope of getting across." Bajie said, "Elder Brother, if we're not going, then let's just break up and be done with it.。」:「?」:「?」:「。」:「Don't drag me into it." The elder said, "Disciple, first ask your elder brother what it is he wants you to do." The fool then truly said to Xingzhe, "Brother, what is it you want me to do?" Xingzhe said, "The first task is to watch over the master; the second is to go and scout the mountain." Bajie said, "Watching over the master means sitting still, while scouting the mountain means walking about.Surely you don't mean for me to sit a while and then walk, and walk a while and then sit again??」:「便。」:「How could I possibly attend to both at once?" Xingzhe said, "I'm not asking you to do both together — just take on one of them, that will do." Bajie laughed again and said, "Well, that's a reasonable enough arrangement. But I don't yet know what watching over the master involves, or what scouting the mountain involves.。」:「Explain them both to me first, and let me pick whichever suits me better to go and do." Xingzhe said, "As for watching over the master: when the master goes to relieve himself, you must attend him;when the master wants to travel on, you must support him;when the master wants to eat a vegetarian meal, you must go beg the food for it.If he grows the least bit hungry, you are to be beaten;if his face grows the least bit sallow, you are to be beaten;。」:「if his body grows the least bit thin, you are to be beaten." Bajie, alarmed, said, "This is hard, hard, hard.Attending and supporting him — that's not too troublesome;even carrying him on my back the whole way would still be manageable enough;西?」:「。」 :「。」but if you make me go begging for food out in the countryside — on this road through the West, they won't know I'm a monk fetching scriptures, and will only take me for some half-grown wild boar come out of the mountains, and they'll gather a crowd with pitchforks and brooms, surround old Hog, drag him home, and slaughter him, salting him away for the New Year — wouldn't that be a disaster indeed?" Xingzhe said, "Then go scout the mountain instead." Bajie said, "And what does scouting the mountain involve?" Xingzhe said, "Simply go into this mountain, and find out how many monsters there are, what mountain this truly is, what cave it is, so that we may know how to get past." Bajie said, "That's easy enough — old Hog will go scout the mountain, then." And with that the fool hitched up his robe, hefted his rake, and strode off vigorously, straight into the depths of the mountain;full of spirit, he hurried off onto the main path.

Xingzhe, standing by, could not help but snicker coldly to himself.:「The elder scolded him, saying, "You reckless ape!Among brothers you show not the least fellow feeling, but constantly harbor thoughts of envy and jealousy.。」:「You cook up such crafty schemes, with clever words and a fawning face, to trick him into going off to scout the mountain, and now here you are laughing at him besides." Xingzhe said, "I'm not laughing at him — there's a meaning behind this laugh of mine.。」:「?」:「?」:「。」Watch — this trip of Zhu Bajie's, he will certainly not scout the mountain at all, nor will he dare face any monster; instead he'll go hide himself away somewhere for a good while, then make up some lie to fool us with." The elder said, "How could you possibly know that about him?" Xingzhe said, "I've reckoned that this is just how he'll act — if you don't believe it, let me follow him and see for myself, and listen in on him: first, to lend a hand with my own skill in subduing demons, and second, to see whether he truly has a sincere heart set on worshipping the Buddha." The elder said, "Good, good, good — but mind you don't play tricks on him and make a fool of him." Xingzhe agreed, and went straight up the mountain slope after him, and with a shake of his body transformed himself into a tiny gnat.Indeed he had transformed himself most deftly and lightly — behold him:

With a soft buzzing beat of his wings he flew off, caught up with Bajie, and settled down behind his ear, right at the roots of his bristly hair. The fool simply kept on walking, with no idea at all that someone was riding upon him.:「After going some seven or eight li, he tossed aside his rake, turned his head back toward Tang Seng, and pointing and gesturing, cursed him, "You soft-hearted old monk, you pestering Bimawen, you weak-faced Sha Monk — you're all off there taking your ease, while you trick old Hog here into trudging this road. We're all supposedly fetching scriptures, all hoping to attain the true fruits of enlightenment, and yet it's me alone you send off to scout some mountain or other.Ha ha ha — knowing there are monsters about, staying clear and walking around them wouldn't even be half the trouble, and yet you make me go and seek them out instead — what rotten luck this is.。」Let me go off somewhere and sleep a while — sleep one good sleep, then go back and mumble some vague answer to him, just claiming I've scouted the mountain, and that'll settle the account." The fool, feeling pleased with himself for the moment, shouldered his rake and walked on again, and soon saw a curving slope of red grass in a mountain hollow.使:「He plunged straight in, and using his rake to smooth out a bed on the ground, flopped down and lay there rolling about, stretching his waist out, and said aloud, "How delightful.。」Even that Bimawen himself couldn't be as free and easy as I am now."

As it happened, Xingzhe, behind his ear, had been listening to every single word, and unable to hold back, he flew up and gave him another bit of teasing.Once more he shook himself and transformed into a woodpecker.Behold:

This little bird was neither large nor small — set upon a scale, it would weigh only two or three ounces. Its beak was of red copper, its feet of black iron. With a swift, rustling beat of its wings, it swooped down. That Bajie had flopped down and was sound asleep, when he was struck a sharp rap right on the lips.

:「。」The idiot scrambled up in a panic, bawling wildly, "There's a monster, there's a monster, it's jabbed me with a spear, my mouth hurts terribly!" He reached up to feel it, and blood oozed out.:「?」He said, "Blast it, I've got no reason to celebrate, so why should my mouth be hung with red?" Staring at his bloodied hand, muttering on and on, he looked all around, but saw no sign of anything stirring.:「?」He said, "There's no monster here—then how did I get jabbed with a spear?" Suddenly he looked up, and it turned out to be a woodpecker, flying about in midair.:「The idiot ground his teeth and cursed, "That damned creature—it's bad enough that the Bimawen bullies me, and now you come to bully me too.Now I understand. He must not have recognized me as a person at all, but taken my mouth for a rotten, decayed black stump of wood, thinking there were bugs inside it, and pecked at me looking for grubs to eat.。」Let me tuck my mouth into my chest and sleep." And the idiot rolled himself over and lay down to sleep again.Xingzhe flew over again, and pecked him once more behind the ear.:「The idiot scrambled up in alarm and said, "That damned creature, it's really pestering me something awful. This must be its nest, where it lays eggs and raises its brood, and it's afraid I'll take over the spot, so it keeps pestering me like this.。」Enough, enough, I won't sleep here anymore." He hoisted his rake and headed straight out of the Red Grass Slope, finding the path and walking on again. This delighted Sun Xingzhe no end, and made the Handsome Monkey King laugh himself sideways.:「。」Xingzhe said, "This lump of a creature, with both eyes wide open, can't even recognize one of his own."

The Great Sage, splendid as ever, shook himself and transformed again, turning himself into a tiny gnat, and stuck himself right behind Bajie's ear, never leaving his body. That idiot went deeper into the mountains, and after another four or five li, he saw in a hollow of the mountain three square blue stones, each the size of a tabletop. The idiot set down his rake and made a deep bow to the stones.:「?」Xingzhe laughed to himself, "This idiot—a stone isn't a person, it can't talk, and it can't return a bow, so why bow to it? Isn't that a pointless act?" It turned out the idiot was treating the stones as Tang Seng, Sha Seng, and Xingzhe, the three of them, and rehearsing before them.:「He said, "When I go back this time and see Master, if he asks whether there are monsters, I'll just say there are monsters. If he asks what kind of mountain it is, well, if I say it's kneaded from mud, made of earth, cast in tin, forged in bronze, steamed from dough, pasted from paper, or drawn with a brush, they'll say I'm being an idiot about it—if I talk like that, it'll only prove me a bigger fool.I'll just say it's a mountain of stone. If he asks what kind of cave, I'll just say it's a cave of stone too.If he asks what kind of gate, I'll say it's an iron-plated gate studded with nails. If he asks how far in it goes, I'll just say it's three levels deep inside. If he presses further and asks how many nails are on the gate, I'll just say old Zhu was in too much of a hurry to note it exactly.。」Once I've got this story worked out properly, that'll fool the Bimawen." The idiot, having settled it all in his mind, dragged his rake and headed straight back along the road.

Little did he know that Xingzhe, behind his ear, heard every single word clearly. When Xingzhe saw him coming back, he at once spread his two wings and flew back ahead of him, resumed his true form, and went to see Master.:「?」:「。」:「Master said, "Wukong, you're back—why hasn't Wuneng returned yet?" Xingzhe said with a laugh, "He's off making up lies somewhere, he'll be along soon." The elder said, "His two ears cover his eyes, he's a simple, clumsy fellow—what lies could he possibly make up?。」:「You must be inventing some devilish talk to slander him again." Xingzhe said, "Master, you're just too quick to shield his faults.。」This is something that can be checked and cross-examined." And he told beforehand how Bajie had burrowed into the grass to sleep, been pecked awake by a woodpecker, bowed to the stones, and made up that whole story about the stone mountain, stone cave, iron-plated gate, and the tale of monsters.

When he had finished speaking, before long, the idiot came walking up.Afraid he might forget his lie, he walked with his head down, rehearsing it under his breath.:「?」:「?」Xingzhe gave a shout, "Idiot, what are you muttering about?" Bajie lifted his ears to look and said, "Have I reached the spot already?" The idiot then went forward and knelt down.:「。」:「The elder helped him up, saying, "Disciple, you've had a hard time of it." Bajie said, "Indeed I have.。」:「?」:「!」:「?」:「。」:「。」:「Of all people, one who walks the roads and climbs the mountains suffers the most hardship." The elder said, "Were there any monsters?" Bajie said, "There were monsters, there were monsters, a whole crowd of them!" The elder said, "How did they let you go, then?" Bajie said, "They called me Grandfather Pig, Uncle Pig, laid out some noodle soup and vegetarian food, had me eat a full meal, and said they'd set out flags and drums to see us across the mountain." Xingzhe said, "He must have fallen asleep in the grass, and this is just sleep-talk." Hearing this, the idiot shrank two inches in fright and said, "Good grief!?」:「。」 「?」:「。」「?」:「。」「?」:「。」:「。」:「?」:「『。』?」How could he know I was asleep?" Xingzhe stepped forward, grabbed him by the collar, and said, "Come here, let me question you." The idiot panicked again, trembling all over, and said, "If you want to question me, fine, but why grab and pull at me?" Xingzhe said, "What kind of mountain was it?" Bajie said, "A mountain of stone." "What kind of cave?" He said, "A cave of stone." "What kind of gate?" He said, "An iron-plated gate studded with nails." "How far in does it go?" He said, "Three levels deep inside." Xingzhe said, "You needn't say any more—I remember the second half quite clearly myself; in case Master doesn't believe it, let me say it for you." Bajie said, "What cheek! You never even went there, what do you know about it, that you'd say it for me?" Xingzhe laughed and said, "'As for how many nails are on the gate, just say old Zhu was in too much of a hurry to note it exactly.' Isn't that right?" The idiot at once panicked and fell to his knees.:「Xingzhe said, "You bowed to the stones, treating them as the three of us, and went through a question-and-answer with them—isn't that right?:『。』?」:「?」And you also said, 'Once I've got the lie worked out properly, that'll fool the Bimawen.' Isn't that right?" The idiot hurriedly did nothing but kowtow, saying, "Elder Brother, when I went to scout the mountain, did you actually follow me and listen in?"

:「Xingzhe scolded, "You husk-brained lump of a creature! At such a critical spot, sent to scout the mountain, and instead you went off to sleep. If the woodpecker hadn't pecked you awake, you'd still be lying there asleep. And once pecked awake, you went and made up such a whopping lie—wouldn't that have ruined our whole undertaking?。」:「Quick, stick out your shins, and take five strokes of the cudgel to fix it in your memory." Bajie panicked and said, "That mourning-staff is heavy—just a graze and the skin splits, just a light touch and the sinews are hurt;。」:「?」:「。」 :「if you hit me five times, that would be the death of me." Xingzhe said, "You're afraid of being beaten, yet you go and tell lies anyway?" Bajie said, "Brother, it was only this once, I'll never dare do it again." Xingzhe said, "One offense earns three strokes." Bajie said, "Good grief!。」 :「I can't even bear half a stroke." With no other recourse, the idiot pulled at Master and said, "Put in a good word for me." The elder said, "Wukong said you were making up lies, and I didn't believe it—but now, sure enough, it's true, and you really deserve a beating.使But right now, crossing this mountain, we're short of hands to send on errands. Wukong, spare him for now, and wait until we're across the mountain.。」:「:『。』Then you may beat him." Xingzhe said, "The ancients said, 'To obey one's parents' wishes out of affection is called great filial piety.' Since Master says not to beat you, I'll spare you for now.。」But go scout the mountain for him again, and if you tell lies once more and ruin things, I certainly won't spare you the next time."

The idiot had no choice but to scramble up and set off again.Watch him now, hurrying onto the main road—suspicion breeds phantoms in the dark, and with every step he suspected Xingzhe had transformed himself and was following close behind, so that whatever he saw, he at once suspected it was Xingzhe.:「After walking some seven or eight li, he saw a tiger dash across the mountain slope; he wasn't even afraid, but raised his rake and said, "Elder Brother, come to listen for my lies, have you?。」:「This time I won't make any up." Walking on further, the mountain wind came on fiercely, and with a whoosh it blew down a withered tree, which came rolling right up to him, and he stamped his feet and beat his chest, saying, "Brother, ah, what's the meaning of this??」:「I've already said I won't dare make up lies, so why turn into a tree to come and hit me?" Walking on further still, he saw a white-necked crow, right overhead, cawing several times in a row, and he said again, "Brother, for shame, for shame.I said I wouldn't make things up, and I won't—why do you keep turning into a crow like this??」Have you come to listen in on me?" As it happened, this time Xingzhe had not actually followed him at all; it was Bajie himself, startled and suspicious, wildly imagining and guessing on his own, so that no matter where he went he suspected Xingzhe was tailing him. We'll leave the idiot to his alarm and suspicion for now, and say no more of that.

Let us tell instead of that mountain, called Pingding Shan, Level-Top Mountain, and that cave, called Lianhua Dong, Lotus Cave.In the cave there were two demons: one called Great King Jinjiao, Golden Horn, the other called Great King Yinjiao, Silver Horn.:「?」:「。」:「。」:「?」:「Jinjiao was sitting there, and said to Yinjiao, "Brother, how long has it been since we last scouted the mountain?" Yinjiao said, "It's been half a month." Jinjiao said, "Brother, today go out and scout it for me." Yinjiao said, "Why scout the mountain today?" Jinjiao said, "You don't know.西I've recently heard that from the Tang court in the Eastern Land, a royal brother-monk named Tang Seng has been sent west to worship Buddha, a party of four altogether, called Sun Xingzhe, Zhu Bajie, and Monk Sha, along with a horse, five in all.。」:「Watch out for wherever they may be, and seize him and bring him to me." Yinjiao said, "If we want to eat people, there's no shortage to be had anywhere.。」:「When this monk gets there, just let him go on his way." Jinjiao said, "You don't understand.。」:「In the years when I left the Heavenly realm, I once heard it said among men: Tang Seng is the Elder Golden Cicada come down to the mortal world, a good man who has cultivated through ten lifetimes, his primal yang never once spent, and whoever eats his flesh will gain long life and eternal youth." Yinjiao said, "If eating his flesh alone can grant long life and eternal youth, then why should we sit in meditation, build up merit, refine the dragon and tiger, or pair the female and male?We should simply go eat him and be done with it.。」:「Let me go and capture him." Jinjiao said, "Brother, you're a bit hot-tempered, don't rush into it.If you go out the gate and, without telling good from bad, seize any monk you come across, and it turns out not to be Tang Seng, that would hardly do either.I remember what he looks like—I once had his likeness, and that of his disciples, painted, their forms captured on a scroll.。」Take it with you, and whenever you come across a monk, use it to check and verify." And one by one he told him the names of each person.便Once Yinjiao had the portrait and knew the names, he left the cave at once, mustered thirty junior demons, and went up the mountain to patrol.

:「?」:「。」Now to tell of Bajie—his luck was out; just as he was walking along, he ran smack into the band of demons, who blocked his way head-on and said, "Who goes there?" The idiot only then lifted his head, raised his ears to look, and saw they were demons; he panicked, and thought to himself, "If I say I'm a monk fetching scriptures, they'll haul me off." So he only said he was a traveler passing through.:「。」A junior demon reported back, "Great King, he's just a traveler." Among those thirty junior demons, some recognized him and some did not.:「。」One standing off to the side, who had heard the earlier instructions, said, "Great King, this monk looks like the Zhu Bajie in this portrait." And he called for the portrait of likenesses to be hung up.:「。」:「。 When Bajie saw it, he was greatly alarmed and said, "No wonder I've been out of sorts lately—so it's because he'd sent my likeness and spirit on ahead here!" A junior demon held it up on a spear-point, and Yinjiao pointed and said, "The one riding the white horse is Tang Seng, the hairy-faced one is Sun Xingzhe..." Hearing this, Bajie said, "City God, even if you leave me out, that's fine—a pig's head as offering, and twenty-four rounds of vegetarian rites for you." He kept muttering under his breath, making vow after vow.:「。」The demon went on, "The dark, tall one is Sha Seng, and the one with the long snout and big ears is Zhu Bajie." Hearing himself named, the idiot panicked and tucked his snout into his chest to hide it.:「。」:「。」使The demon called out, "Monk, stick out your snout." Bajie said, "It's a birth defect, I can't stick it out." The demon ordered a junior demon to hook it out with a hook.:「In a panic, Bajie stuck his snout out himself and said, "Just a little something, nothing much—see, isn't this it?便?」If you want to look, just look—why use a hook?"

The demon, recognizing him as Bajie, drew his precious blade and rushed forward to hack at him.:「!」:「。」:「The idiot raised his rake and blocked, saying, "My child, none of your rudeness—look out for the rake!" The demon laughed and said, "This monk became a monk partway through life." Bajie said, "Well, my fine lad, you've got some sense.?」:「使。」:「How did you know that old master here became a monk partway through life?" The demon said, "You know how to wield that rake—you must have stolen it from someone's garden plot where it was used for tilling the soil." Bajie said, "My child, how would you recognize old master's rake here—it's nothing like that garden-tilling rake. This is:

When the demon heard this, he was in no mood to yield at all.使Wielding his Seven-Star Sword, he let loose with all his moves, trading blows with Bajie back and forth, and the two battled it out on the mountain for some twenty rounds without either side gaining the upper hand.Bajie worked himself into a fury and met him with reckless, life-or-death force.Seeing him flap his ears, spray slobbering foam, and wield the rake, all the while shouting and bellowing, the demon felt more than a little dread himself, and at once turned to call the junior demons, and they all set upon him together. If it had been one against one, it would truly have been fine. But when he saw all the junior demons closing in together, he panicked, lost his footing, couldn't fend them all off, was routed, and turned to flee.As it happened, the ground was uneven, and not having looked closely, he was suddenly tripped by a trailing gourd-vine and stumbled. He struggled up and was running on, when another junior demon, lying flat on the ground, grabbed him by the heel, and down he went again, sprawling flat on his face.A crowd of them rushed up and pinned him down, grabbing his bristly mane, yanking his ears, pulling his feet, dragging his tail, hoisting and carrying him bodily, and hauled him into the cave.Alas!Indeed it is as the verse says:

In the end, it is not yet known whether Zhu Bajie's life will be spared—listen to the explanation in the next chapter.

What it’s about

At Level-Top Mountain a woodcutter, in truth a spirit sent by the Merit-Star, warns the pilgrims that two demon kings command a horde of nearly five thousand ahead, all hungry for Tripitaka's flesh. Wukong, to keep the lazy Bajie honest for once, sends him on alone to scout the mountain and patrol its ridges.

Bajie, true to form, hides in the tall grass to sleep instead of scouting, rehearsing under his breath the lies he will tell on his return. But the demons' patrol finds him, and after a boastful, blundering fight he is seized and carried into the Lotus-Flower Cave. Wukong's small precaution has backfired, and the party's clown is a prisoner before the real contest with the two kings has even begun.

When it was written 背景

This 回 opens the long, celebrated Level-Top Mountain episode, the richest single arc of the middle journey, spread across four chapters. It begins in comedy, with Bajie's laziness and rehearsed excuses, before the danger sharpens into a genuine threat. Learners should note the recurring device of a disguised celestial messenger delivering a warning, and should fix on the two demon kings and their cave as the anchors of an arc that will turn on a set of named magic treasures.
