The Moon Goddess Reclaims Her Jade Hare

095Chapter 95

Now Tang Seng, full of care and sorrow, followed the king into the inner palace. He heard drums and music resounding to the heavens, while a rare fragrance assailed his nostrils. He kept his head bowed, not daring to look up.Wukong, secretly delighted, perched on the crown of the Vairocana cap, focused his divine radiance, and opened his Fiery Eyes and Golden Pupils to look about. He saw two rows of gorgeously dressed palace maidens, arrayed like immortals in the Palace of Stamens, surpassing even the springtime splendor of brocade-curtained chambers.Truly it was a scene such as this:

:「Seeing that his master remained utterly unmoved, Wukong smacked his lips in secret admiration and said, “What a fine monk, what a fine monk!。」Though surrounded by silks and brocades, his heart conceives no love; though treading jade, his mind is not led astray.”

:「。」Presently the queen and imperial consorts escorted the princess out of Zhique Palace and came together to greet them, all crying, “Long live our king—long, long may he live!” The elder was so alarmed that he trembled all over and knew not what to do.Wukong had already perceived that a faint trace of demonic vapor showed above the princess’s head, though it was not especially fierce.:「。」 :「He hurried close to his master’s ear and cried, “Master, the princess is a counterfeit.” The elder said, “If she is false, how can we make her reveal her true form?” Wukong said, “I’ll manifest my true body and seize her here and now.” The elder replied, “No, no; you may frighten His Majesty. Wait until the king and queen have withdrawn, and then employ your magic.”

:「But Wukong had been impatient all his life; how could he endure waiting? With a mighty shout he revealed his true form, rushed forward, seized the princess, and cursed her: “You wicked beast! You have passed falsehood off as truth here and enjoyed yourself in this fashion long enough;。」西yet you are still not satisfied and would deceive my master, destroy his true yang essence, and gratify your lustful nature!” The king was frightened witless, the queen and consorts stumbled and scrambled away, and every palace maid and painted damsel fled east or hid west, each intent only on saving her life.便It was just like this:

Sanzang was thrown into complete confusion; trembling, he clung to the king and cried, “Your Majesty, do not be afraid! Do not be afraid! This is merely my unruly disciple employing his magic to distinguish truth from falsehood.”

When the demon saw that matters had gone awry, she tore herself free, stripped off her clothes, shook her head, and sent her hairpins, rings, and ornaments tumbling down. She ran to the shrine of the local earth god in the imperial garden, took out a short club shaped like the beak of a grain pounder, wheeled around, and struck wildly at Wukong.使Wukong followed at once and met her head-on with his iron staff.Shouting and bellowing, the two began fighting in the flower garden. Then they displayed their great divine powers, each mounting cloud and mist as they battled into the sky. This was the battle:

The two fought and vied in midair, terrifying every commoner in the city and making all the officials at court quake with fear.:「The elder supported the king and kept saying, “Do not be alarmed, and please tell Her Majesty and all the others not to fear.。」 Your princess is a false creature masquerading in a true form; once my disciple has captured her, the rights and wrongs of it will become clear.” Some of the bolder consorts picked up the clothes, hairpins, and rings and showed them to the queen, saying, “These are what the princess wore, but now she has cast them all aside and is fighting that monk naked in the sky; she must certainly be an evil spirit.” Only then did the king, queen, consorts, and the others recover their composure and gaze upward into the sky; of this we shall say no more.

The demon and the Great Sage fought for half a day without either gaining the victory.:「!」Wukong tossed up his staff and cried, “Change!” One became ten, ten became a hundred, and a hundred became a thousand; throughout the sky they writhed like swimming snakes and churning pythons, raining blows upon the demon. The demon lost her head, transformed herself into a clear breeze, and fled straight up into the azure heavens.Wukong recited a spell and gathered the iron staffs back into one, then sped after her on an auspicious beam of light. As they neared the Western Gate of Heaven, Wukong saw the banners flashing and cried sternly, “Guardians of the heavenly gate, stop that demon! Do not let her escape!” And indeed, at the gate stood the Heavenly King Who Protects the Realm, commanding the four great marshals Pang, Liu, Gou, and Bi, who brandished their weapons and barred her way.使Unable to advance, the demon hastily turned back, wielded her short club, and once more confronted Wukong.

:「The Great Sage swung his iron staff and looked closely as he met her attack; seeing that the short club was thick at one end and slender at the other, rather like the pestle of a grain mortar, he roared, “Wicked beast! What manner of weapon is that, that you dare oppose old Sun with it?。」:「Surrender at once, or this staff will smash your skull to pieces!” Gritting her teeth, the demon said, “You know nothing of this weapon of mine. Listen while I tell you:

:「Hearing this, Wukong gave a cold chuckle and said, “What a wicked beast you are!Though you dwell within the Moon Palace, you do not know old Sun’s abilities, and still dare bandy words with me here?。」:「Reveal your true form and surrender at once, and I shall spare your life.” The monster replied, “I know you are the Bimawen who caused havoc in Heaven five hundred years ago, and by rights I ought to yield to you.。」But breaking up another’s marriage is a hatred as deep as the murder of one’s parents; therefore I cannot submit in either feeling or reason, and must fight you, Bimawen who deceives Heaven and defies his superiors.” Nothing enraged the Great Sage more than the three words “Bi-ma-wen”; hearing them, he flew into a fury and raised his iron staff to strike her full in the face. The demon swung her pestle to meet him.西There before the Western Gate of Heaven, they fought each other with savage determination. This was the battle:

After fighting Wukong for another dozen or so rounds, the demon saw how close and relentless his staff-work was and judged that she could not prevail; she feinted with her pestle, shook her body, became ten thousand rays of golden light, and fled defeated straight toward the south. The Great Sage pursued close behind.Suddenly they reached a great mountain; the demon lowered her golden light, burrowed into a cave, and vanished without a sound.Fearing that she might slip away and return to the kingdom to harm Tang Seng, Wukong memorized the shape of the mountain, turned his cloud around, and went straight back to the capital.

By then it was the hour of shen.:「。」:「。」:「The king was clutching Sanzang and trembling all over, crying only, “Holy monk, save me!” The queen and consorts were likewise in a panic when they suddenly saw the Great Sage descend from the clouds and call, “Master, I am back!” Sanzang said, “Wukong, stand still; you must not alarm His Sacred Majesty.?」:「Let me ask you: what exactly has become of the false princess?” Standing outside Zhique Palace with his hands clasped before his breast, Wukong replied, “The false princess is a demon. At first I fought her for half a day; unable to withstand me, she changed into a clear breeze and fled straight toward the Gate of Heaven, where I shouted for the heavenly gods to stop her.She revealed her form and fought me for another dozen or so rounds, then transformed herself into golden light and fled defeated to a mountain due south.。」:「?」:「。」:「。」 I pursued her swiftly to the mountain but could find no trace of her; fearing that she might return here to harm you, I came back especially to look after you.” Hearing this, the king clutched Tang Seng and asked, “If the false princess is a demon, where is my true princess?” Wukong answered at once, “Once I have captured the false princess, your true princess will naturally return.” At these words the queen and consorts were relieved of their fear and came forward one by one to bow and plead, “We beg the holy monk to rescue our true princess and distinguish light from darkness; we shall certainly reward you richly.” Wukong said, “This is no place for us to talk. Your Majesty, please leave the palace with my master and return to the throne hall, while the ladies each go back to their quarters. Summon my fellow disciples Bajie and Sha Seng to protect my master, and I shall then be free to subdue the demon. For one thing, this will keep the inner and outer quarters distinct; for another, it will spare me anxiety.。」I shall carefully establish the truth and thereby show the fruits of all my efforts.” The king obeyed and thanked him again and again.殿He then left the inner palace hand in hand with Tang Seng and went straight to the throne hall. The queen and consorts each returned to their own quarters.Meanwhile orders were given both to prepare a vegetarian meal and to summon Bajie and Sha Seng.In a moment the two arrived.Wukong related everything that had happened and instructed them to guard their master with care. The Great Sage then mounted his somersault cloud and flew away through the sky.殿Before the hall, all the officials bowed one after another toward the heavens; of this we shall say no more.

Great Sage Sun went straight to the mountain due south to search.使The demon, having lost the battle, had reached this mountain and burrowed into her lair; she blocked the entrance with stones and hid within, trembling in fear and refusing to emerge.Wukong searched for a while but heard no movement, and in his vexation he formed a hand-seal, recited a true incantation, and summoned the local earth god and mountain god for questioning.:「。」:「Presently the two gods arrived, kowtowing and saying, “We did not know, we did not know! Had we known, we should have come far out to welcome you. We beg you to forgive our offense.” Wukong said, “For now I shall not beat you.Let me ask you: what is the name of this mountain? How many demons are there here?。」:「Tell me the truth and I shall pardon your offense.” The two gods replied, “Great Sage, this mountain is called Maoying Mountain. There are only three rabbit burrows in it; from remotest antiquity to the present, there have been no demons here, for this is a blessed land of the Five Rings.西。」:「西If the Great Sage seeks demons, you should look farther along the road to the Western Heaven.” Wukong said, “Old Sun has reached Tianzhu Kingdom in the Western Heaven, where a demon abducted the king’s princess and abandoned her in the wilderness. The demon then assumed the princess’s appearance, deceived the king, erected a festooned tower, and cast down an embroidered ball to choose a consort.I was escorting Tang Seng past the foot of the tower when she deliberately struck him with the ball, intending to make him her husband and entice away his primal yang.I saw through her and revealed myself in the palace to seize her.使She cast off her human clothes and ornaments, wielded a short club called the Medicine-Pounding Pestle, and fought me for half a day before turning into a clear breeze and escaping.西Old Sun pursued her to the Western Gate of Heaven, where we fought for another dozen or so rounds.?」Seeing that she could not win, she again became golden light and fled here; how can she have vanished?”

Hearing this, the two gods led Wukong to search the three burrows. At the first burrow, near the foot of the mountain, they found only a few wild rabbits, which fled away in fright. When they searched the burrow at the very summit, they saw two large stones blocking its entrance.:「。」使The earth god said, “The demon must be in here; she evidently burrowed in here in her haste.” Wukong at once used his iron staff to sweep the stones aside. The demon was indeed hiding within; with a whoosh she leapt out and raised her medicine pestle to strike, while Wukong swung up his iron staff and parried.退The mountain god retreated in terror, and the earth god fled in haste.:「?」退Muttering and sputtering, the demon cursed the mountain god and earth god: “Who told you to lead him here to search for me?” Struggling to hold off the iron staff, she fought as she retreated until she reached the sky.

Just as her peril became acute, evening fell.Wukong grew still more ferocious and struck without mercy, longing to kill her with a single blow.:「。」Suddenly he heard someone in the azure vault of the highest heavens call, “Great Sage, stay your hand! Stay your hand! Show mercy beneath your staff!” Wukong turned and saw that it was the Lord of the Moon, followed by the immortal maidens Heng’e, descending on a colored cloud before him.:「Wukong hastily put away his iron staff, bowed, and said, “Where is the venerable Lord of the Moon going?。」:「Old Sun failed to stand aside for you.” The Lord of the Moon said, “The demon fighting you is the Jade Rabbit who pounds the immortal medicine of mystic frost in my Guanghan Palace. She secretly opened the jade portal and golden lock, escaped from the palace, and has now been away for a year.I calculated that she presently faced a mortal calamity, and so have come especially to save her life.。」:「For my sake, I beg the Great Sage to spare her.” Wukong repeatedly murmured assent, saying, “I would not dare refuse, I would not dare.使No wonder she could wield the Medicine-Pounding Pestle: she is a Jade Rabbit. But the venerable Lord of the Moon does not know that she abducted and hid the princess of Tianzhu, then counterfeited her true form and sought to destroy the primal yang of my holy master; given her motives and crimes, how could I willingly let the matter rest?便?」:「How can she be lightly forgiven and spared?” The Lord of the Moon said, “You do not know that the king’s princess is no mortal either, but was originally Su’e of the Moon Palace.Eighteen years ago she once struck the Jade Rabbit with her palm; then, yearning for the mortal world, she descended below as a spark of spirit-light, entered the womb of the king’s principal queen, and was born as the princess. The Jade Rabbit nursed a grudge for that blow, and so last year secretly fled the palace and abandoned Su’e in the wilderness. But she should never have sought to wed Tang Seng; that crime truly cannot be excused.Fortunately you were vigilant, saw through truth and falsehood, and prevented any harm from befalling your master.。」:「I earnestly beg you to forgive her for my sake, and I shall take her away.” Wukong laughed and said, “Since these are the causes and consequences, old Sun would not dare oppose you.。」But if you simply take the Jade Rabbit away, I fear the king will not believe us. May I trouble the Lord of the Moon and the immortal sisters to bring her there and give the king clear proof: first, to display old Sun’s abilities; second, to explain why Su’e descended to the mortal world; and then to have the king recover Princess Su’e herself, so that the manifest working of retribution may be seen.”

:「。」The Lord of the Moon accepted his proposal, pointed at the demon, and cried, “Wicked beast, return at once to your proper form and come with us!” The Jade Rabbit rolled over and revealed her original shape.Truly she was a sight such as this:

The Great Sage was overjoyed at the sight and rode ahead on cloud-light to lead the way.The Lord of the Moon, followed by the immortal maidens Heng’e and carrying the Jade Rabbit, returned straight to the borders of Tianzhu Kingdom. It was now dusk, and the moon was beginning to rise.As they approached the city, they heard the drums beating atop the watchtower.殿退The king and Tang Seng were still within the hall, while Bajie, Sha Seng, and all the officials stood before the steps and were just discussing the dismissal of court, when they saw a bank of colored clouds in the southern sky, bright as day.:「All raised their heads to look and heard Great Sage Sun call loudly, “Your Majesty of Tianzhu, summon your queen and imperial consorts to come and see! Beneath this jeweled canopy is the Lord of the Moon Palace, and the immortal sisters on either side are the Chang’e maidens of the moon.。」This Jade Rabbit is the false princess of your household, now revealed in her true form.” The king hastily summoned the queen, imperial consorts, palace maids, painted damsels, and all the rest to worship Heaven; he, Tang Seng, and the officials likewise bowed toward the sky in gratitude.滿In every household throughout the city, not a person failed to set out an incense table, kowtow, and invoke the Buddha.:「。」:「As they were watching, Zhu Bajie was stirred by lust; unable to restrain himself, he leapt into the air, embraced the immortal maiden Nichang, and said, “Sister, you and I are old acquaintances. Come away and have some fun with me.” Wukong stepped forward, seized Bajie, slapped him twice, and cursed, “You boorish, shameless idiot!?」:「。」What sort of place do you think this is, that you dare conceive lust?” Bajie said, “I only wanted to fool around a little and relieve my boredom.” The Lord of the Moon ordered the immortal canopy turned about and, with all the Chang’e maidens and the recovered Jade Rabbit, returned straight to the Moon Palace.Wukong dragged Bajie down to the dusty earth.

殿:「In the hall, the king thanked Wukong and then asked about the cause of it all: “Many thanks to the divine monk for using his mighty powers to capture the false princess.?」:「But where is my true princess?” Wukong replied, “Your true princess is no mortal being either; she is the immortal maiden Su’e of the Moon Palace.Eighteen years ago, after she struck the Jade Rabbit with her palm, she yearned for the mortal world, descended below, entered the womb of your principal queen, and was born in human form. The Jade Rabbit bore a grudge for that old injury, so last year she secretly opened the jade portal and golden lock and descended, abducted Su’e, and abandoned her in the wilderness, while she herself changed form to deceive you.The Lord of the Moon told me this chain of cause and consequence with his own lips just now.。」 Today we have rid you of the false one; tomorrow Your Majesty should go and seek the true one.” Hearing this, the king was ashamed and anxious, and could not keep the tears from streaming down his cheeks. “My child! I ascended the throne in my youth and have never even passed beyond the city gates; where am I to search for you?” Wukong laughed and said, “There is no need to grieve. Your princess is presently feigning madness in the Gufubujin Monastery. For now let everyone disperse; at daybreak I shall restore your true princess to you.” The officials again bowed low and memorialized, “Let our king set his heart at ease. These divine monks are Buddhas who soar on clouds and ride the mist; they surely know the causes of past and future. Tomorrow trouble them to accompany us in the search, and the truth will soon be known.” The king assented and invited them to the Liuchun Pavilion, where a vegetarian feast was laid and quarters prepared for their rest.By then it was nearly the second watch.Just as the verse says:

Of how each retired to rest that night, we shall say no more.

That night, freed from the demon’s influence, the king’s spirits suddenly revived; at three quarters past the fifth watch, he once more appeared at court. When the audience was over, he ordered that Tang Seng and his three disciples be invited in to discuss finding the princess. The elder came as summoned and bowed before the throne. The Great Sage and the other two joined their palms in greeting.:「。」 The king leaned forward and said, “As for my daughter the princess, of whom we spoke yesterday, may I trouble the holy monks to seek and rescue her?” The elder replied, “The other day, as this poor monk was journeying from the east, evening overtook us near a monastery called the Jigu-Bujin Monastery, so we went in to ask for lodging and were fortunate enough to be hospitably received by its monks. After our evening meal, I strolled beneath the moon and came to the old Bujin Garden to inspect its ruins, when suddenly the sound of weeping reached my ears, and I asked what caused it. An old monk of that monastery, more than a hundred years of age, dismissed everyone else and told me the whole story in detail: ‘The weeping began late one spring several years ago. I was then meditating upon the bright moon of my true nature when a sudden gust of wind arose, and I saw a young woman cast down upon the ground. When I questioned her, she said, “I am the daughter of the king of Tianzhu. While admiring the moon and flowers at night, I was swept here by the wind.”’ Knowing well the proprieties between men and women, the old monk immediately confined the princess in a secluded room.Fearing that some unruly monk in the monastery might violate her, he merely said that she was a demon whom he had locked away.Understanding his intention, the princess babbled nonsense by day and asked for a little food and tea;but late at night, when no one was near, she thought of her parents and wept. The old monk came to the capital several times to make inquiries, but each time he saw that a princess was safe and well in the palace, so he dared not speak out or submit a report. When he saw that my disciples possessed certain divine powers, he charged me again and again to investigate the matter upon reaching the capital.Little did we expect that the false princess was in truth the Jade Rabbit of the Moon Palace, turned into a demon; she had assumed the real princess’s form and even plotted to rob me of my primal yang.Fortunately, my disciple displayed his power and magic and distinguished the false from the true. She has now been taken back by Taiyin Xing.。」Your true princess is still at the Bujin Monastery, pretending to be mad.”

On hearing this detailed account, the king burst into loud sobs. The commotion soon alarmed all the ladies of the inner palaces, who came to ask what had happened; not one of them refrained from weeping.:「?」:「。」 After a long while, the king asked, “How far is the Bujin Monastery from the city?” Sanzang replied, “Only sixty li.” The king therefore issued a decree: “Let the consorts of the eastern and western palaces guard the palace, and let the grand preceptor conduct the affairs of state.。」We shall go with the chief queen, the assembled officials, and the four holy monks to fetch the princess from the monastery.” The royal procession was at once prepared, and the entire party left the court.

But look at Xingzhe: he leapt into the air, gave his waist a twist, and reached the monastery first.:「?」:「The monks hurriedly knelt to receive him, saying, “When the venerable master left, you all went on foot. How is it that today you have descended from the sky?” Xingzhe laughed and said, “Where is that old master of yours?。」Call him out at once, and set up an incense table to receive the royal procession. The king and queen of Tianzhu, all their officials, and my master are coming.” The monks did not understand what he meant and immediately summoned the old monk.:「?」When the old monk saw Xingzhe, he threw himself down in reverence and asked, “Venerable master, how did the princess’s affair turn out?” Xingzhe gave a full account of how the false princess had thrown the embroidered ball to choose Tang Seng as her husband, how she had been pursued and fought, and how Taiyin Xing had taken the Jade Rabbit away. The old monk kowtowed again in gratitude.:「Xingzhe helped him up and said, “No more bowing, no more bowing.。」便穿Quickly make ready to receive the royal procession.” Only then did the monks realize that the person locked in the rear quarters was a young woman. Startled yet delighted, they set up an incense table outside the monastery gate, donned their kasayas, and sounded bells and drums as they waited.

Before long, the royal procession arrived. It was indeed a splendid sight:

When the king reached the monastery gate, he saw the monks arranged in perfect order, prostrate in welcome;and he also saw Sun Xingzhe standing among them.:「?」:「The king asked, “Holy monk, how did you arrive before us?” Xingzhe laughed and replied, “Old Sun merely gave his waist the slightest twist, and here he was.?」How did it take you people half the day to get here?” Tang Seng and the others then arrived behind them. The elder led the royal party to the room at the back, where the princess was still pretending to be mad and babbling wildly.:「。」The old monk knelt, pointed, and said, “Inside this room is the princess whom the wind carried here years ago.” The king immediately ordered the door opened. The iron lock was promptly removed and the door opened.:「The king and queen saw the princess and recognized her features. Heedless of her filth, they rushed forward and clasped her in their arms, crying, “Oh, our poor suffering child!?」How did you come to endure such torment and misery here?” Truly, when parents and child are reunited, their feelings are unlike those of other people; all three embraced and wept bitterly. After they had wept awhile and told of their sorrow during the separation, the king ordered fragrant hot water prepared so that the princess might bathe and change her clothes, then ride back to the capital in a royal carriage.

:「。」:「。」:「Xingzhe again saluted the king with clasped hands and said, “Old Sun has one more matter to present to Your Majesty.” Returning the salute, the king replied, “Whatever the holy monk commands, We shall obey.” Xingzhe said, “This mountain is called Baijiao Mountain.便It has lately been said that a centipede has become a demon here, harming people at night and causing great trouble to travelers passing to and fro.I reckon that centipedes can be subdued only by chickens. You should select a thousand exceptionally large roosters and release them upon the mountain to rid it of these venomous creatures.。」Then change the mountain’s name and issue an imperial edict conferring a title upon it; this will also serve to repay the monks for their kindness in sheltering the princess.” The king was delighted and agreed. He immediately sent officials into the city to fetch the chickens;and changed the mountain’s name to Baohua Mountain.」;He further ordered the Ministry of Works to procure materials and rebuild the monastery, and bestowed upon it the title “Imperially Founded Jigu-Bujin Monastery of Baohua Mountain”;」,he appointed the old monk “Monastic Officer Who Requites the Realm,” made the office hereditary in perpetuity, and granted him an annual stipend of thirty-six shi of grain. The community of monks gave thanks for the imperial favor and saw the royal procession off on its return to court.

The princess entered the palace and was reunited with everyone.A banquet was prepared to dispel her sorrows and celebrate her return. The queen, the other consorts, and their children were once more joyfully reunited. The king and his ministers rejoiced together as well; of their feasting through the night, we shall say no more.

Early the next morning, the king issued a decree summoning painters to make joyful portraits of the four holy monks, to be enshrined in the Huayi Tower.殿He also had the princess newly adorned and fully dressed, and brought her out into the hall to thank Tang Seng and his three disciples for rescuing her from suffering.西When her thanks were complete, Tang Seng took leave of the king to continue westward. But the king would not hear of letting them go. He laid on sumptuous banquets for five or six days in succession, which thoroughly delighted the Idiot, who opened his belly to its fullest capacity and enjoyed himself mightily.

Seeing how firmly they were resolved to worship the Buddha, the king found that no amount of urging could keep them; he therefore presented them with two hundred ingots of gold and silver and a tray of treasures of every kind as thanks.Master and disciples refused to accept so much as a hair’s worth. The king ordered the imperial carriage prepared, invited the venerable master to ride in it, and assigned officials to escort them far on their way.The queen, the consorts, the ministers, and the common people all kowtowed and thanked them without end.Farther along the road, they again found the monks bowing as they saw them off, and none could bear to part from them. When Xingzhe saw that their escorts refused to turn back, he had no choice but to make a spell with his fingers and blow a breath of immortal air toward the southeast. A dark gust arose and clouded the escorts’ eyes, and only then were they able to slip away.Just as the verse says:

After all, what awaited them farther down the road is unknown; listen to the explanation in the next chapter.

What it’s about

At the wedding audience Wukong provokes the false princess into battle and forces her to reveal herself as the Jade Rabbit of the Moon Palace. The rabbit fights with a pestle, then flees when her disguise fails. The lunar goddess Taiyin Xingjun descends with the immortal Chang'e attendants, stops Wukong from killing the spirit and reclaims the animal that had slipped away from its celestial post.

The true princess is restored to her parents and explains her year of suffering after the rabbit cast her from the palace. The rabbit's plot is traced to a grievance involving a heavenly maiden's earlier blow, so earthly abduction appears as displaced celestial retaliation. Sanzang remains unmarried, the king certifies the travelers' documents, and the party resumes the westward road. A false union is dissolved so that religious purpose, royal kinship and celestial order can each return to its proper form.

When it was written 背景

The moon rabbit traditionally pounds the elixir of immortality, which explains both its pestle and its place beside the lunar goddess. The episode combines that familiar image with the folk motif of a stolen princess and counterfeit bride. Learners can connect 玉兔, 太陰星君, 嫦娥 and 真形. The title's contrast between false joining and true form makes exposure a kind of correction, but the rabbit's retrieval again shows the novel's status-based justice: a celestial dependent is disciplined by her owner rather than killed like an unaffiliated demon.
