At the House of Squire Kou the Pilgrims Are Received

096Chapter 96

使The story tells that Tang Seng and his disciples used their magic power to hold back the monks of Bujin Temple. When the monks saw that after the black wind had passed, master and disciples were nowhere to be seen, they took them for a living Buddha come down to the mortal world, kowtowed, and turned back — but no more of that.

As master and disciples journeyed west, it was just the season when spring was ending and summer beginning:

There is no need to tell in full of their breakfasting at dawn and lodging at dusk, of turning along mountain streams and following the water's course.Along that peaceful road they traveled for half a month.Ahead they saw a city wall drawing near again.:「?」:「。」:「Sanzang asked, "Disciple, what place is this again?" Xingzhe said, "I don't know, I don't know." Bajie laughed and said, "You've traveled this road before — how can you say you don't know?。」:「There's something fishy here — you're deliberately pretending not to recognize it, just to make fools of us." Xingzhe said, "This idiot doesn't understand reason at all.Though I have traveled this road several times, on those occasions I was up in the ninefold heavens, riding the clouds coming and riding the clouds going — when did I ever set foot on this ground? It was no concern of mine, so why would I bother to note it?That is why I don't know.?」What's fishy about that, that I'd be making a fool of you?"

As they talked, before they knew it they had already arrived at the outskirts.Sanzang dismounted, crossed the drawbridge, and went straight in through the gate onto the long street, where he saw two old men sitting under a veranda chatting.:「Sanzang called out, "Disciples, stand still there in the middle of the street, keep your heads down, and don't be unruly.。」Wait while I go over to that veranda and ask where we are." Xingzhe indeed did as told and stood still.:「。」The elder went forward, pressed his palms together, and called out, "Venerable benefactors, this poor monk greets you." The two old men were just then chatting idly about matters of rise and decline, gain and loss, who was sage and who was worthy, and where the heroic deeds of former times were now — truly sighing greatly over it all.:「?」:「Suddenly hearing a greeting spoken, they returned the courtesy at once, saying, "Elder, what do you have to say?" Sanzang said, "This poor monk has come from afar to pay homage to the Buddha. I have just arrived in your esteemed region and do not know what place this is.?」:「Where might there be a household inclined to good deeds, from whom I could beg a meal?" The old man said, "This humble place of ours is Tongtai Prefecture.Behind the prefecture there is a county called Dilingxian.西Elder, if you wish to eat a vegetarian meal, there is no need to go begging for alms — past this memorial archway, on the north-south street, facing east with its back to the west, there is a gate tower shaped like a crouching tiger; that is the home of Squire Kou. Before his gate hangs a placard reading 'Ten Thousand Monks Never Turned Away.'A monk from afar like yourself may enjoy it to the full.Go!Go!Go!。」Don't interrupt our conversation." Sanzang thanked him.:「He turned and said to Xingzhe, "This place is Dilingxian county of Tongtai Prefecture.:『。』。」:「西Those two old men said: Past this archway, on the north-south street, at an east-facing tiger-crouch gate tower, is the home of Squire Kou, before whose gate hangs a placard reading 'Ten Thousand Monks Never Turned Away.' They told me to go to his home to eat." Sha Seng said, "The Western regions are the land of the Buddha — there really are those who feed monks.。」Since this place is a prefecture and county, there's no need to have our travel rescript inspected — let's go beg some food to eat, and then we can be on our way."

The elder and the three of them walked slowly down the long street, once again causing the people at the market entrance to grow alarmed and suspicious, crowding around and vying to look at their appearances.:「。」The elder instructed them to keep their mouths shut, saying only, "Don't be unruly, don't be unruly." The three of them indeed kept their heads lowered and dared not look up.Turning the corner, they did indeed see a great street running north and south.

As they walked along, they saw a tiger-crouch gate tower, and on the spirit screen inside the gate hung a large placard bearing the four characters "Ten Thousand Monks Never Turned Away.":「西Sanzang said, "In this Buddha-land of the West, whether wise or foolish, none practice deceit.。」When those two old men spoke of it, I still did not quite believe it — now that we've arrived, it is indeed just as they said." Bajie, being coarse and rustic, was about to go straight in.:「。」:「。」Xingzhe said, "Wait a moment, idiot. Only once someone comes out and we've asked how things stand should we go in." Sha Seng said, "Elder Brother speaks with reason — I'm afraid that barging in without regard for inside and outside might vex our benefactor." So they set down the horse and the luggage at the gate.

:「!」In a moment an old servant came out, carrying a scale and a basket. Catching sight of them suddenly, he flung these down in alarm and ran back inside to report, "Master, four strange-looking monks have come to the gate!" The squire, leaning on his cane, was just then strolling idly in the courtyard, ceaselessly reciting the Buddha's name. Upon hearing the report, he threw down his cane and came out to welcome them.:「Seeing the four of them, he was not at all put off by their strange, ugly appearance, and only called out, "Please come in!!」Please come in!" Sanzang, humble and deferential, went in together with the others.:「Turning down a lane, the squire led the way to a building and said, "These rooms on the upper side are the Buddha hall, scripture hall, and dining hall set aside for entertaining you gentlemen.。」Those on the lower side are where my household, young and old, live." Sanzang praised him without end.穿He then took out his cassock, put it on to worship the Buddha, and stepping forward into the hall to look about, he saw:

The elder washed his hands, took up incense, and after kowtowing and finishing his worship, turned back to pay his respects to the squire.:「。」The squire said, "Wait a moment — please come meet in the scripture hall." There again they saw:

:「。」When the elder arrived there and was about to bow, the squire again held him back, saying, "Please remove your Buddhist robe." Sanzang took off his cassock.Only then did he formally greet the elder. He then invited Xingzhe and the other two to greet him as well.He also had the horse fed and the luggage set down under the veranda, and only then asked after their well-being.:「Sanzang said, "This poor monk is an imperial envoy from the Great Tang of the Land of the East, sent to your esteemed region on the way to Vulture Peak, to see the Buddha and seek the true scriptures.。」:「Hearing that your honored household reveres monks, I have come to pay my respects and to beg a meal before continuing on." The squire's face lit up with joy, and smiling broadly he said, "This disciple's humble name is Kou Hong, courtesy name Dakuan, and I have wasted sixty-four years of life.滿Since the age of forty I have vowed to feed ten thousand monks before I would consider the vow fulfilled.簿Now I have been feeding monks for twenty-four years, and I keep a ledger recording the account of it.滿These past few days, having nothing else to do, I reckoned up the names of the monks I had fed, and found I had already fed nine thousand nine hundred ninety-six — lacking only four more to complete the vow.滿Today, as if sent down from Heaven, you four venerable masters have arrived, completing the full number of ten thousand monks.滿Please tell me your honored names, and by all means stay at your ease for a month or more. Once the vow is fulfilled, this disciple will provide sedan chairs and horses to see you venerable masters on your way up the mountain.。」From here to Vulture Peak it is only eight hundred li — hardly far at all." Hearing this, Sanzang was greatly pleased, and for the time being they all agreed to stay — but no more of that for now.

:「?」:「His several household servants, both grown and young, went about the house carrying firewood and fetching water, taking out rice, flour, and vegetables, and preparing the vegetarian meal, which suddenly stirred the squire's wife, who asked, "Where have these monks come from, that everyone is in such a rush?" A servant said, "Just now four eminent monks arrived. Master asked after their circumstances, and they said they were sent by the Emperor of the Great Tang of the Land of the East, on their way to Vulture Peak to pay homage to the Buddha. How great a distance they have traveled to reach us here, no one knows.。」 :「。」:「Master says they were sent down from Heaven, and told us to prepare the meal quickly and provide for them." Hearing this, the old woman too was delighted, and called to her maid, "Bring my clothes so I may dress — I will go and take a look too." The servant said, "Madam, only one of them is fit to look at; the other three are not — their appearance is very ugly." The old woman said, "You wouldn't understand — however ugly and strange their appearance, however odd and outlandish, they must surely be heavenly beings come down into the world.。」:「。」Go quickly first and tell your master." The servant ran to the scripture hall and said to the squire, "Madam has arrived, and wishes to pay her respects to the masters from the Land of the East." Hearing this, Sanzang at once rose from his seat. Before he had finished rising, the old woman had already arrived before the hall.姿Raising her eyes, she saw that Tang Seng's countenance was noble and dignified, his bearing outstanding and impressive.Turning to look, she saw that the appearance of Xingzhe and the other two was extraordinary, and though she knew they must be heavenly beings come down to earth, she still felt a measure of fear, and knelt down to bow to them.:「。」:「?」:「。」Sanzang hastily returned the courtesy, saying, "You trouble yourself, Bodhisattva, with excessive reverence." The old woman asked the squire, "Why do the four masters not sit together?" Bajie, puckering his mouth, said, "The three of us are disciples." Ai-ya!That single utterance of his was like a tiger's roar deep in the mountains, and it frightened the old lady all the more.

:「。」Just as they were speaking, another household servant came in to report, "The two young masters have arrived too." Sanzang turned quickly to look, and saw that they were two young scholars. The scholars came up into the scripture hall and prostrated themselves before the elder.便Flustered, Sanzang hastily returned their bow.:「。」:「The squire stepped forward, took hold of them, and said, "These are my two sons, named Kou Liang and Kou Dong. They have just returned from their studies in the study hall to eat their midday meal, and hearing that the venerable masters had arrived, came to pay their respects." Sanzang said with delight, "How worthy, how worthy!。」:「?」:「。」:「Truly it is as they say: to raise one's household high one must do good deeds; to have fine sons and grandsons one must read books." The two young scholars addressed their father, "Where have these venerable gentlemen come from?" The squire said with a smile, "They have come from very far away — imperial envoys of the Emperor of the Great Tang of the Land of the East in Jambudvipa, sent to Vulture Peak to pay homage to the Buddha and fetch the scriptures." The scholars said, "We have read in the Shilin Guangji that under Heaven there are only four great continents.西This place of ours is called Aparagodaniya in the West, and there is also Purvavideha, the Divine Continent of the East.?」:「We wonder how many years it must have taken to travel from Jambudvipa to here?" Sanzang said with a smile, "This poor monk has spent, on the road, far more days delayed than days actually traveling.I have constantly encountered vicious demons and fierce monsters, enduring a thousand hardships and ten thousand sufferings, and have relied greatly on my three disciples for protection.。」:「In total, fourteen cycles of cold and heat have passed before I was able to reach your esteemed region." Hearing this, the scholars praised him without end, saying, "Truly a divine monk!!」Truly a divine monk!"

:「。」Before he had finished speaking, another young servant came in to invite them, saying, "The vegetarian feast has been laid out — please, masters, come and dine." The squire had his wife and sons return to the inner quarters, while he himself accompanied the four of them into the dining hall to eat.The table there was neatly and properly laid out, and they saw:

Just look at them — those serving soup serving soup, those refilling rice refilling rice, back and forth, truly like shooting stars chasing the moon.As for Zhu Bajie, bowl after bowl in a single gulp, it was just like the wind sweeping away scattered clouds.Master and disciples all thoroughly enjoyed the meal. The elder rose, thanked the squire for the meal, and was about to be on his way.:「The squire stopped him, saying, "Venerable master, set your mind at ease and stay a few more days.:『。』 As the saying goes, 'Starting is easy, finishing is hard.' Only after I have completed the vow's fulfillment will I dare to see you off on your journey." Seeing how sincere and earnest he was, Sanzang could do nothing but stay.

Some five or seven days soon passed, and then the squire invited twenty-four local monks skilled in Buddhist rites to hold a ceremony to complete the vow.The monks spent three or four days on the preparatory writing and arrangements, then chose an auspicious hour and began the Buddhist rites. The customs there were just the same as those of the Great Tang, and indeed:

In this manner the rites went on for three days and nights, and the ceremony was completed.Tang Seng, his mind set on Thunderclap Monastery, was determined with all his heart to go, and once again took his leave and gave thanks.:「?」:「The squire said, "Venerable master, you take your leave in such haste — I imagine that the many days of busy Buddhist rites led to much neglect on our part, and that you harbor some resentment?" Sanzang said, "I have deeply troubled your honored household, and do not know how I might repay you — how could I dare harbor any resentment? It is only that, when the sage sovereign saw me off beyond the pass, he asked when I might return, and I mistakenly answered that I could return within three years.I never expected to be delayed so long on the road — it is now already fourteen years.Whether I will succeed in obtaining the scriptures is still unknown, and the return journey will take another twelve or thirteen years — would that not be a violation of the sacred decree? How could I bear such a crime??」I beg the venerable squire to let this poor monk go on ahead. Once I have obtained the scriptures and am on my way back, I will visit your household again and stay a long while — what objection could there be to that?"

:「Bajie could not restrain himself, and cried out loudly, "Master, you really do go against people's wishes, and are so unreasonable.滿The old squire, a great and wealthy household, made such a vow to feed monks, and now it is fulfilled — moreover he has kept us here with utmost sincerity. Even staying a year or so would do no harm, so why must we insist on leaving? To pass up such ready-made fine meals and instead go begging alms from other households —?」:「what venerable father's or mother's household awaits you further ahead?" The elder gave a sharp shout, saying, "You clumsy creature, you only know how to eat well and care nothing for the cause of our journey and its dedication — you are exactly like a beast that eats at the trough while scratching its itching belly.。」:「。」:「Since you all are so greedy for this and given to such delusion, then tomorrow you may just let me go on by myself." Seeing that Master's face had changed, Xingzhe seized hold of Bajie and gave his head a good pounding with his fists, scolding him, "You idiot, you don't know good from bad, and now you've made Master angry at all of us too." Sha Seng laughed and said, "Well struck, well struck.。」Even keeping quiet like this still draws people's dislike, and yet you go and butt in besides." The idiot stood fuming to one side and dared not say another word.滿:「Seeing that master and disciples had grown upset, the squire had no choice but to put on a smiling, conciliatory face and say, "Venerable master, do not be vexed — please bear with us a little longer today.。」Tomorrow I will arrange some banners and drums, invite a few neighbors and relatives, and see you off on your journey."

:「Just as they were speaking, the old woman came out again and said, "Venerable master, since you have graciously come to our humble home, there is no need to insist so strongly on leaving.?」:「。」:「How many days has it been since you arrived?" Sanzang said, "Half a month already." The old woman said, "This half month may count as my husband's meritorious deed.。」:「This old woman also has a bit of needlework money of her own, and I too wish to feed you venerable masters for half a month." Before she had finished speaking, the brothers Kou Dong and the other came out again and said, "Venerable masters, our father has fed monks for more than twenty years, yet never once met such worthy men.滿Now, fortunately, the vow is fulfilled and you four have descended upon us — truly our humble home is graced with radiance.:『。』We students are young and do not fully understand cause and effect, but we have often heard it said: 'What the husband cultivates, the husband gains; what the wife cultivates, the wife gains; without cultivation, nothing is gained.' Our father and mother each wish to offer their humble gift, precisely so that each may seek some merit of their own — why insist so strongly on refusing?。」:「As for us foolish brothers, we too have saved up a bit of tuition money, and we too hope to provide for you, venerable masters, for half a month before finally seeing you off." Sanzang said, "I already dared not accept the generous kindness of your honored mother, the aged Bodhisattva — how then could I accept the deep affection of you worthy brothers as well?I dare absolutely not accept it.Today I am determined to set out — please, by all means, do not take offense.。」便:「Otherwise, having long overstayed the imperial deadline, my crime would be beyond even death to atone for." Seeing that he could not be persuaded to change his mind, the old woman and her two sons grew annoyed and said, "We meant well in wanting to keep him, yet he is so stubbornly set on leaving.便?」If he wants to go, then let him just go — why keep going on about it so?" Mother and sons then turned and went back inside.

:「Bajie could not hold his tongue, and again said to Tang Seng, "Master, don't put on such airs.:『。』?」:「As the saying goes, 'Staying on brings only reproach.' Let's just stay a month, and settle the wishes of mother and sons — why must we be in such a rush?" Tang Seng gave another sharp shout, and the idiot slapped his own mouth twice, saying, "Bah, bah, bah!!」Told to say no more, and yet I spoke again!" Xingzhe and Sha Seng snickered off to one side.:「?」Tang Seng then rebuked Xingzhe, saying, "What are you laughing at?" and at once formed the magic sign with his fingers, about to recite the Tight-Fillet Spell.:「In alarm Xingzhe fell to his knees, saying, "Master, I wasn't laughing, I wasn't laughing.。」Please, whatever you do, don't recite it, don't recite it."

:「。」西Seeing that master and disciples were growing ever more upset with one another, the squire no longer dared insist on keeping them, and only said, "Venerable masters, there's no need to quarrel — you shall be seen off tomorrow morning as planned." With that he left the scripture hall and instructed his clerk to write out a hundred or so invitation cards, inviting neighbors and relatives to come the next morning to see the venerable masters of the Tang off on their journey west.1. On the one hand, he also had the cook arrange a farewell banquet;2. on the other hand, he had the household stewards make twenty pairs of colored banners, seek out a troupe of pipers and drummers, invite a company of monks from Nanlai Temple, and invite a company of Daoist priests from the Dongyue Shrine, stipulating that all must be ready and in order by the hour of Si the next day.3. All the stewards received their orders and departed.

4. Before long, evening came again.5. Having eaten the evening vegetarian meal, each retired to his sleeping quarters.6. Behold:

7. That night, in the third or fourth watch, all the household servants in charge of affairs rose early and went to purchase and arrange the various items.8. Look at those preparing the banquet — the kitchen in a bustling flurry;9. those setting up the colored banners — noise and commotion in the hall;10. those inviting monks and priests — legs running to and fro;11. those summoning the musicians — bodies dashing about in haste;西12. those delivering invitation cards — running east and west;13. those preparing sedan-chairs and horses — calling above and answering below.14. All that half-night, the clamor continued right up until dawn, and by around the hour of Si, everything was complete — but then again, where there is money, nothing is too much trouble.

15. Now to tell of Tang Seng and his disciples, who rose early, and again that whole company of people waited upon them.16. The elder gave orders to pack up the luggage and saddle the horses.17. When the idiot heard they were to leave, he again pouted his lips and muttered under his breath, but had no choice but to pack up the robe and bowl and dig out the shoulder pole to carry the load.18. Sha Monk brushed and washed the horse, and fitted the saddle and bridle in readiness.19. Xingzhe handed the nine-ringed staff into his master's hands, while he himself hung the pouch holding the travel rescript across his chest — and all were ready to set off at once.20. The squire again invited them all to the great hall at the back, where another banquet had been laid out, even finer than the reception in the vegetarian hall.21. Behold:

:「。」22. Just as the elder was exchanging courtesies with the squire, a house servant came to report, "The guests have all arrived." These were the invited neighbors from left and right, brothers-in-law and cousins by marriage, sons-in-law and brothers-in-law again, along with fellow pious donors of the same faith and devout friends who chanted the Buddha's name — all of them together bowed in greeting to the elder.23. When the bowing was done, each took his seat in order.24. Below the hall, drums and zithers and pipes played; above the hall, there was music and wine and feasting.:「西。」 ?」:「25. At this sumptuous feast, Bajie, mindful of it, said to Sha Monk, "Brother, eat and drink to your heart's content — once we leave the Kou household, there'll be no such fine fare again." Sha Monk laughed and said, "Second Brother, what kind of talk is that? As the saying goes, 'However many rare delicacies there are, once you're full, that's enough.' There may be a road that's your own, but is there a stomach that's your own?" Bajie said, "You're really too timid, too timid.。」:「。」26. As for me, I'll eat my fill this one time, and even after three days I won't be quick to feel hungry." Xingzhe heard this and said, "Idiot, don't burst your belly — we have to be on the road now."

27. Before the talk was over, the sun was already nearing noon.》。28. The elder, seated at the head, raised his chopsticks and recited the Sutra of Thanks for the Meal. 29. Bajie, in a fluster, took the extra rice being brought and gulped down bowl after bowl, tossing back five or six more bowls besides, and then, without any regard for propriety, stuffed his sleeves full to bursting with steamed buns, dumplings, cakes, and fried pastries, before finally rising to follow his master.30. The elder thanked the squire, and thanked all the assembled guests as well, and together they went out the gate.31. Look — outside the gate stood the colored banners and the canopy of honor, the drummers and musicians, and just then the two companies of monks and priests arrived as well.:「。」32. The squire said with a smile, "You gentlemen have come late, while the venerable master is in a hurry to leave, so I could not offer you a vegetarian meal — please accept my thanks when he returns." Everyone made way, those carrying the sedan-chair carried it, those on horseback mounted their horses, those on foot walked, and all let the four pilgrims go ahead.33. All that could be heard was the deafening roar of drums and music, banners and pennants blotting out the sun, crowds of people gathering, and carriages and horses packed close together, all coming to watch Squire Kou see Tang Seng off.34. This grand display of wealth and honor truly surpassed being encircled by pearls and jade, and was no less than being sheltered within brocade curtains in springtime.35. That company of monks played a set of Buddhist tunes;36. that company of Daoists piped a strain of mysterious music.漿37. They all escorted them out beyond the city, and walked as far as the ten-li pavilion, where once more food in baskets and drink in jugs were laid out, cups were raised and wine poured, and they drank together before parting.:「。」:「38. The squire still could not bear to let them go, and with tears welling said, "Venerable master, when you have fetched the scriptures and are on your way back, you must by all means come to my home and stay a few more days, to fulfill my, Kou Hong's, heartfelt wish." Sanzang, deeply moved and endlessly grateful, said, "If I reach Vulture Peak and am granted an audience with the Buddha, I shall first report the squire's great virtue.。」39. On my return I will certainly come to your door to give thanks, to give thanks." As they spoke, before they knew it another two or three li had passed, and the elder earnestly bowed his farewell.40. The squire again broke down weeping aloud and turned back.41. This is just as it is said:

42. Let us leave aside how Squire Kou, having escorted them to the ten-li pavilion, returned home together with the others.43. Now to tell of the master and his three disciples, who traveled some forty or fifty li, and the sky began to grow dark.:「宿?」:「44. The elder said, "It's getting late — where can we find lodging?" Bajie, shouldering the load, pouted his lips and said, "Here we had ready-made tea and rice and wouldn't eat it, and cool tiled rooms and wouldn't stay in them, and instead we have to go rushing off on the road like we're snatching a corpse or chasing off a departed soul.?」:「45. Now it's late, and if it starts raining, what then?" Sanzang scolded him, "You cursed beast, complaining again.:『。』。」46. As the saying goes, 'Chang'an, however fine, is not a place to linger forever.' Once we are fated to bow before the Buddha and obtain the true scriptures, then we shall return to the great Tang, report to our sovereign, and you may eat the food from the imperial kitchen for as many years as you like, until it bursts you, you cursed beast, and makes you a well-fed ghost." The idiot chuckled secretly to himself and dared not say another word.

:「。」」。47. Xingzhe raised his eyes and looked into the distance, and saw a few rooms beside the main road, and hastily urged his master, "Let's rest there, let's rest there." When the elder came near, he saw it was a collapsed memorial archway, on which hung an old plaque, the paint faded and dust gathered, bearing four large characters: 'Huaguang Monastery.':「48. The elder dismounted and said, "The Bodhisattva Huaguang was a disciple of the Buddha of the Five Lights of Flame; because he wiped out the Poison Fire Demon King, he was demoted in rank and transformed into the Wuxian Numinous Official.。」49. There must be a temple keeper here." So they all went in together, but saw that the corridor rooms had all collapsed, with not a soul in sight.50. Just as they were about to withdraw and leave, unexpectedly black clouds covered the sky and a heavy rain came pouring down.51. With no other choice, they picked a spot beneath the ruined building that was sheltered from wind and rain, and hid themselves there.52. They kept utterly still and silent, not daring to raise their voices, fearing that some demon or evil spirit might notice them.53. Some sat, some stood, and they endured a hard night without sleep.54. Ay!55. Truly it was:

56. In the end, we do not know whether, once day broke, they went onward, or what happened — listen to the next chapter's explanation.

What it’s about

In Bronze-Platform Prefecture the wealthy layman Kou welcomes Sanzang's party with exceptional generosity. He has vowed to feed ten thousand monks and discovers that Sanzang completes the number. Kou celebrates the fulfillment with vegetarian banquets, lodging and gifts, hoping to keep the pilgrims for many days. His household turns hospitality into a joyful religious achievement rather than another attempt to eat, marry or imprison the scripture seeker.

After several days Sanzang insists on continuing and refuses the gold and fine goods Kou presses upon him. He accepts only practical provisions, while the host reluctantly stages an elaborate farewell and follows the party far down the road. Their affectionate delay attracts the attention of bandits, who infer that such honored guests must have left treasure behind. The pilgrims' freedom from wealth is genuine, but the public performance of patronage creates a dangerous story about riches in their wake.

When it was written 背景

Supporting monks is a major field of Buddhist merit, and Kou's numerical vow makes Sanzang's arrival feel like the providential completion of a lifetime practice. Yet merit is tested by attachment: the host wants his generosity visibly acknowledged, while Sanzang must receive kindness without becoming detained or enriched by it. Learners should follow 寇員外, 萬僧, 布施 and 不貪. The chapter treats hospitality warmly while showing how conspicuous virtue can be misread within a world still governed by appetite.
