話表孫行者三人隨著宣召官至午門外，黃門官即時傳奏宣進。The tale now tells how Sun Xingzhe and the other two followed the summoning officer to the Meridian Gate, where a palace eunuch immediately reported their arrival and had them admitted.他三個齊齊站定，更不下拜。The three stood there in a row, without bowing.國王問道：「那三位是聖僧駙馬之高徒？The king asked, “Are you three the eminent disciples of the holy monk, our future imperial son-in-law?姓甚名誰？What are your surnames and given names?何方居住？Where do you reside?因甚事出家？What caused you to leave the secular life?取何經卷？」行者即近前，意欲上殿。And which scriptures are you going to fetch?” Xingzhe at once stepped forward, intending to mount the dais.傍有護駕的喝道：「不要走，有甚話，立下奏來。」行者笑道：「我們出家人，得一步就進一步。」隨後八戒、沙僧亦俱近前。A guard at the side shouted, “Stay where you are! Whatever you have to say, report it from there.” Xingzhe laughed. “We who have left the world advance whenever we can gain a step.” Bajie and Sha Seng then also came forward behind him.長老恐他村魯驚駕，便起身叫道：「徒弟啊，陛下問你來因，你即奏上。」行者見他那師父在傍侍立，忍不住大叫一聲道：「陛下輕人輕己。The elder, fearing their rustic manners might alarm His Majesty, rose and called, “Disciples, His Majesty is asking why you came; report it to him.” Seeing his master standing in attendance at the side, Xingzhe could not restrain himself and cried aloud, “Your Majesty, in slighting another, you slight yourself.既招我師為駙馬，如何教他侍立？Since you have chosen my master as your son-in-law, why make him stand in attendance?世間稱女夫謂之貴人，豈有貴人不坐之理。」國王聽說，大驚失色，欲退殿，恐失了觀瞻。The husband of a princess is called a noble lord; how can a noble lord be left without a seat?” At this the king turned pale with alarm and wished to withdraw, but feared losing dignity before the court.只得硬著膽，教近侍的取繡墩來，請唐僧坐了。He could only summon his courage and order an attendant to bring an embroidered stool, upon which he invited the Tang monk to sit.行者才奏道：Only then did Xingzhe make his report:

國王聞得這般名重，慌得下了龍床，走將來，以御手挽定長老道：「駙馬，也是朕之天緣，得遇你這仙姻仙眷。」三藏滿口謝恩，請國王登位。Hearing how illustrious their names were, the king hurried down from the dragon throne, came forward, and, taking the elder by the hand with his own imperial hand, said, “Imperial son-in-law, this too is a heavenly match granted to us, that we should encounter such an immortal marriage and immortal mate as you.” Sanzang thanked him profusely and asked the king to resume his throne.

国王闻得这般名重，慌得下了龙床，走将来，以御手挽定长老道：「驸马，也是朕之天缘，得遇你这仙姻仙眷。」三藏满口谢恩，请国王登位。

復問：「那位是第二高徒？」八戒掬嘴揚威道：The king asked again, “Which of you is the second disciple?” Bajie thrust out his snout with a swagger and declared:

國王聽言，膽戰心驚，不敢觀覷。At these words the king trembled with fear and dared not look at him.這獃子越弄精神，搖著頭，掬著嘴，撐起耳朵，呵呵大笑。The idiot grew more animated still, shaking his head, thrusting out his snout, pricking up his ears, and laughing aloud.三藏又怕驚駕，即叱道：「八戒收斂！」方才叉手拱立，假扭斯文。Sanzang, again fearing that he might alarm His Majesty, rebuked him: “Bajie, restrain yourself!” Only then did he fold his hands and stand respectfully, affecting a genteel manner.

国王听言，胆战心惊，不敢观觑。这呆子越弄精神，摇著头，掬著嘴，撑起耳朵，呵呵大笑。三藏又怕惊驾，即叱道：「八戒收敛！」方才叉手拱立，假扭斯文。

又問：「第三位高徒，因甚皈依？」沙和尚合掌道：The king asked again, “Why did the third disciple take refuge in the Buddhist faith?” Sha Heshang joined his palms and replied:

國王見說，多驚多喜：喜的是女兒招了活佛，驚的是三個實乃妖神。Hearing this, the king was both greatly startled and greatly pleased: pleased that his daughter had chosen a living Buddha, but startled that the three disciples were veritable demon-gods.正在驚喜之間，忽有正臺陰陽官奏道：「婚期已定本年本月十二日壬子辰良，周堂通利，宜配婚姻。」國王道：「今日是何日辰？」陰陽官奏：「今日初八，乃戊申之日，猿猴獻果，正宜進賢納事。」國王大喜，即著當駕官打掃御花園館閣樓亭，且請駙馬同三位高徒安歇，待後安排合巹佳筵，著公主匹配。While he hovered between alarm and delight, the chief court astrologer suddenly reported, “The wedding date has been fixed for the twelfth day of this very month and year, the auspicious renzi day and chen hour. All the marriage omens are favorable, and the day is fitting for the union.” The king asked, “What day is today?” The astrologer replied, “Today is the eighth, a wushen day: the monkey presents fruit, an excellent day for welcoming worthy men and undertaking affairs.” The king was delighted and at once ordered the officers in attendance to clean the halls, pavilions, towers, and terraces of the imperial garden, inviting the imperial son-in-law and his three eminent disciples to rest there while arrangements were made for the auspicious wedding feast and the princess was given to him in marriage.眾等欽遵，國王退朝，多官皆散不題。All respectfully obeyed the imperial command. The king withdrew from court, and the many officials dispersed; of this we speak no more.

国王见说，多惊多喜：喜的是女儿招了活佛，惊的是三个实乃妖神。正在惊喜之间，忽有正台阴阳官奏道：「婚期已定本年本月十二日壬子辰良，周堂通利，宜配婚姻。」国王道：「今日是何日辰？」阴阳官奏：「今日初八，乃戊申之日，猿猴献果，正宜进贤纳事。」国王大喜，即著当驾官打扫御花园馆阁楼亭，且请驸马同三位高徒安歇，待后安排合卺佳筵，著公主匹配。众等钦遵，国王退朝，多官皆散不题。

卻說三藏師徒們都到御花園，天色漸晚，擺了素膳。Sanzang and his disciples all went to the imperial garden. As evening gradually fell, a vegetarian meal was laid out.八戒喜道：「這一日也該吃飯了。」管辦人即將素米飯、麵飯等物，整擔挑來。Bajie said happily, “After a day like this, it is certainly time we ate.” The provisioning officers immediately brought whole shoulder-loads of plain rice, wheaten dishes, and other foods.那八戒吃了又添，添了又吃，直吃得撐腸拄腹，方才住手。Bajie ate and asked for more, then ate the extra and asked for more again, not stopping until his guts were packed and his belly strained.少頃，又點上燈，設鋪蓋，各自歸寢。A little later lamps were lit, bedding was laid out, and each retired to sleep.

却说三藏师徒们都到御花园，天色渐晚，摆了素膳。八戒喜道：「这一日也该吃饭了。」管办人即将素米饭、面饭等物，整担挑来。那八戒吃了又添，添了又吃，直吃得撑肠拄腹，方才住手。少顷，又点上灯，设铺盖，各自归寝。

長老見左右無人，卻恨責行者，怒聲叫道：「悟空，你這猢猻，番番害我。When the elder saw that no one else was near, he angrily reproached Xingzhe, crying, “Wukong, you macaque, time and again you bring disaster upon me!我說只去倒換關文，莫向彩樓前去，你怎麼直要引我去看看？I said we should only go and have our travel permit certified, and not approach the decorated tower. Why did you insist on taking me over to look?如今看得好麼，卻惹出這般事來，怎生是好？」行者陪笑道：「師父說：『先母也是拋打繡毬，遇舊緣，成其夫婦。』似有慕古之意，老孫才引你去。A fine sight it has proved! Now you have stirred up this whole affair—what are we to do?” Xingzhe replied with an ingratiating smile, “Master, you said, ‘My late mother also cast down an embroidered ball, met the man destined for her from a former life, and became his wife.’ You seemed eager to emulate the ancients, so Old Sun took you there.又想著那個給孤布金寺長老之言，就此檢視真假。Besides, I recalled what the elder at the Gold-Spreading Temple of the Benefactor of Orphans had said and wanted to test whether it was true.適見那皇帝之面，略有些晦暗之色，但只未見公主何如耳。」長老道：「你見公主便怎的？」行者道：「老孫的火眼金睛，但見面，就認得真假善惡，富貴貧窮，卻好施為，辨明邪正。」沙僧與八戒笑道：「哥哥近日又學得會相面了。」行者道：「相面之士，當我孫子罷了。」三藏喝道：「且休調嘴。When I saw the emperor’s face just now, there was a faint shadow of ill fortune upon it; only I have yet to see what the princess is like.” The elder asked, “And what will you do when you see the princess?” Xingzhe replied, “With Old Sun’s fiery eyes and golden pupils, I need only see a face to discern truth from falsehood, good from evil, wealth from poverty. Then I shall know how to act and distinguish the orthodox from the wicked.” Sha Seng and Bajie laughed. “Our elder brother has lately learned physiognomy too!” Xingzhe said, “Professional physiognomists are fit to be my grandsons.” Sanzang snapped, “Enough of your glib talk!只是他如今定要招我，果何以處之？」行者道：「且到十二日會喜之時，必定那公主出來參拜父母，等老孫在傍觀看。The question is, now that he is determined to make me his son-in-law, how exactly are we to deal with it?” Xingzhe said, “Wait until the wedding celebrations on the twelfth. The princess will certainly come out to pay her respects to her parents, and Old Sun will watch her from the side.若還是個真女人，你就做了駙馬，享用國內之榮華也罷。」三藏聞言，越生嗔怒，罵道：「好猢猻！If she truly is a human woman, then you may as well become the imperial son-in-law and enjoy all the wealth and honor of this kingdom.” At this Sanzang grew angrier still and cursed him: “You wretched macaque!你還害我哩。You are still trying to ruin me!卻是悟能說的，我們十節兒已上了九節七八分了，你還把熱舌頭鐸我。Wuneng was right: of our ten-part journey, nine parts and another seven or eight tenths are already done, yet you still torment me with your wagging tongue.快早夾著，你休開那臭口；Clamp it shut at once, and do not open that stinking mouth of yours!再若無禮，我就念起咒來，教你了當不得。」行者聽說念咒，慌得跪在面前道：「莫念，莫念。If you are insolent again, I shall recite the spell and leave you in such pain that you will not know what to do.” Hearing him threaten the spell, Xingzhe hurriedly knelt before him and said, “Do not recite it! Do not recite it!若是真女人，待拜堂時，我們一齊大鬧皇宮，領你去也。」If she is truly a human woman, then when it is time to bow in the wedding ceremony, we shall all create an uproar in the palace and take you away.”

长老见左右无人，却恨责行者，怒声叫道：「悟空，你这猢狲，番番害我。我说只去倒换关文，莫向彩楼前去，你怎么直要引我去看看？如今看得好么，却惹出这般事来，怎生是好？」行者陪笑道：「师父说：『先母也是抛打绣毬，遇旧缘，成其夫妇。』似有慕古之意，老孙才引你去。又想著那个给孤布金寺长老之言，就此检视真假。适见那皇帝之面，略有些晦暗之色，但只未见公主何如耳。」长老道：「你见公主便怎的？」行者道：「老孙的火眼金睛，但见面，就认得真假善恶，富贵贫穷，却好施为，辨明邪正。」沙僧与八戒笑道：「哥哥近日又学得会相面了。」行者道：「相面之士，当我孙子罢了。」三藏喝道：「且休调嘴。只是他如今定要招我，果何以处之？」行者道：「且到十二日会喜之时，必定那公主出来参拜父母，等老孙在傍观看。若还是个真女人，你就做了驸马，享用国内之荣华也罢。」三藏闻言，越生嗔怒，骂道：「好猢狲！你还害我哩。却是悟能说的，我们十节儿已上了九节七八分了，你还把热舌头铎我。快早夹著，你休开那臭口；再若无礼，我就念起咒来，教你了当不得。」行者听说念咒，慌得跪在面前道：「莫念，莫念。若是真女人，待拜堂时，我们一齐大闹皇宫，领你去也。」

眾文武百官朝罷，又宣：「光祿寺安排十二日會喜佳筵。When the assembled civil and military officials had completed their audience, the king further proclaimed, “Let the Court of Imperial Entertainments prepare the auspicious wedding banquet for the twelfth.今日且整春罍，請駙馬在御花園中款玩。」吩咐儀制司領三位賢親去會同館少坐，著光祿寺安排三席素宴去彼奉陪。For today, prepare vessels of spring wine and entertain the imperial son-in-law in the imperial garden.” He ordered the Office of Ceremonial to escort the three honored kinsmen to rest awhile at the Hostel for Tributary Envoys, and instructed the Court of Imperial Entertainments to prepare three vegetarian tables there for their enjoyment.兩處俱著教坊司奏樂，伏侍賞春景，消遲日也。At both places the Imperial Music Office was to perform music, serving the guests as they admired the spring scenery and whiled away the long day.八戒聞得，應聲道：「陛下，我師徒自相會，更無一刻相離。Hearing this, Bajie immediately said, “Your Majesty, we master and disciples have always remained together, never parting for so much as a moment.今日既在御花園飲宴，帶我們去耍兩日，好教師父替你家做駙馬；Since there is to be a banquet in the imperial garden today, take us along to enjoy ourselves for a couple of days, and then our master may become the son-in-law of your house.不然，這個買賣生意弄不成。」那國王見他醜陋，說話粗俗，又見他扭頭捏頸，掬嘴巴，搖耳朵，即像有些風氣，猶恐攪破親事，只得依從。Otherwise this bargain of ours will fall through.” The king saw how ugly he was and heard his coarse speech; and when Bajie craned his head and twisted his neck, thrusting out his snout and wagging his ears, he appeared somewhat deranged. Fearing he might disrupt the marriage, the king had no choice but to consent.便教：「在永鎮華夷閣裡安排二席，我與駙馬同坐。He therefore ordered, “Prepare two tables in the Pavilion of Everlasting Peace between China and the Western Lands, where the imperial son-in-law and I shall sit together.留春亭上安排三席，請三位別坐，恐他師徒們坐次不便。」那獃子才朝上唱個喏，叫聲：「多謝。」各各而退。Prepare three tables in the Pavilion for Detaining Spring and invite the three gentlemen to sit separately, lest the seating order between master and disciples prove awkward.” Only then did the idiot salute the throne and cry, “Many thanks.” They all withdrew.又傳旨教內宮官排宴，著三宮六院后妃與公主上頭，就為添妝餪子，以待十二日佳配。The king further decreed that the palace officials prepare a banquet for the empresses and consorts of the Three Palaces and Six Courts, together with the princess, to dress her hair and add gifts to her trousseau at the prenuptial feast, in readiness for the auspicious marriage on the twelfth.

众文武百官朝罢，又宣：「光禄寺安排十二日会喜佳筵。今日且整春罍，请驸马在御花园中款玩。」吩咐仪制司领三位贤亲去会同馆少坐，著光禄寺安排三席素宴去彼奉陪。两处俱著教坊司奏乐，伏侍赏春景，消迟日也。八戒闻得，应声道：「陛下，我师徒自相会，更无一刻相离。今日既在御花园饮宴，带我们去耍两日，好教师父替你家做驸马；不然，这个买卖生意弄不成。」那国王见他丑陋，说话粗俗，又见他扭头捏颈，掬嘴巴，摇耳朵，即像有些风气，犹恐搅破亲事，只得依从。便教：「在永镇华夷阁里安排二席，我与驸马同坐。留春亭上安排三席，请三位别坐，恐他师徒们坐次不便。」那呆子才朝上唱个喏，叫声：「多谢。」各各而退。又传旨教内宫官排宴，著三宫六院后妃与公主上头，就为添妆餪子，以待十二日佳配。

一行君王幾位，觀之良久。The king and his party viewed it for a long while.早有儀制司官邀請行者三人入留春亭，國王攜唐僧上華夷閣，各自飲宴。Officials of the Office of Ceremonial soon invited Xingzhe and the other two into the Pavilion for Detaining Spring, while the king accompanied the Tang monk to the Pavilion of China and the Western Lands, where they held their separate banquets.那歌舞吹彈，鋪張陳設，真是：The singing, dancing, pipes and strings, together with all the lavish arrangements, were truly a sight to behold:

一行君王几位，观之良久。早有仪制司官邀请行者三人入留春亭，国王携唐僧上华夷阁，各自饮宴。那歌舞吹弹，铺张陈设，真是：

此時長老見那國王敬重，無計可奈，只得勉強隨喜，誠是外喜而內憂也。Seeing how respectfully the king treated him, the elder could devise no means of escape and had to force himself to join in the festivities; outwardly he rejoiced, but inwardly he grieved.坐間見壁上掛著四面金屏，屏上畫著春夏秋冬四景，皆有題詠，皆是翰林名士之詩：While seated, he noticed four golden screens hanging on the wall. Painted upon them were scenes of spring, summer, autumn, and winter, each bearing a poem by an eminent scholar of the Hanlin Academy:

此时长老见那国王敬重，无计可奈，只得勉强随喜，诚是外喜而内忧也。坐间见壁上挂著四面金屏，屏上画著春夏秋冬四景，皆有题咏，皆是翰林名士之诗：

那國王見唐僧恣意看詩，便道：「駙馬喜玩詩中之味，必定善於吟哦。Seeing the Tang monk absorbed in reading the poems, the king said, “My imperial son-in-law delights in savoring poetry and must surely be skilled in chanting verse.如不吝珠玉，請依韻各和一首如何？」長老是個對景忘情，明心見性之意。If you do not begrudge us your pearls and jade, would you compose a poem to each scene, matching the original rhyme?” The elder was one who, moved by the scene, forgot all worldly concerns, his mind illumined and his true nature revealed.見國王欽重，命和前韻，他不覺忽詠一句道：「日暖冰消大地鈞。」國王大喜，即召侍衛官：「取文房四寶，請駙馬和完錄下，俟朕緩緩味之。」長老欣然不辭，舉筆而和：Seeing the king’s reverence and receiving his command to match the preceding rhymes, he involuntarily chanted a line: “The sun grows warm, the ice dissolves, and all the earth lies in accord.” The king was delighted and immediately summoned an attendant: “Bring the Four Treasures of the Study. Let the imperial son-in-law complete his matching poems and write them down, that We may savor them at leisure.” The elder readily consented, took up the brush, and composed:

國王見和大喜，稱唱道：「好個『袖手高歌倚翠欄』！」遂命教坊司以新詩奏樂，盡日而散。The king was delighted by the matching poems and exclaimed in praise, “How splendid that line, ‘Hands tucked in my sleeves, I sing aloud, leaning on the emerald balustrade’!” He then ordered the Imperial Music Office to set the new poems to music, and the gathering did not disperse until the day was done.

国王见和大喜，称唱道：「好个『袖手高歌倚翠栏』！」遂命教坊司以新诗奏乐，尽日而散。

行者三人在留春亭亦盡受用，各飲了幾杯，也都有些酣意。Xingzhe and the other two likewise enjoyed themselves fully in the Pavilion for Detaining Spring. Each drank several cups, and all were somewhat tipsy.正欲去尋長老，只見長老已同國王在一閣。Just as they were about to seek out the elder, they saw that he was already together with the king in one of the pavilions.八戒獃性發作，應聲叫道：「好快活，好自在，今日也受用這一下了。Bajie’s foolish nature asserted itself, and he cried out, “What pleasure! What freedom! Today we have finally had a fine time of it.卻該趁飽兒睡覺去也。」沙僧笑道：「二哥忒沒修養。Now that we are full, we ought to go to sleep.” Sha Seng laughed. “Second Brother, you have no self-control at all.這氣飽飫，如何睡覺？」八戒道：「你那裡知道，俗語云：『吃了飯兒不挺屍，肚裡沒板脂』哩。」With your belly so bloated and stuffed, how can you sleep?” Bajie replied, “What do you know? The common saying goes, ‘If you do not lie down like a corpse after eating, you will never grow a layer of fat in your belly.’”

行者三人在留春亭亦尽受用，各饮了几杯，也都有些酣意。正欲去寻长老，只见长老已同国王在一阁。八戒呆性发作，应声叫道：「好快活，好自在，今日也受用这一下了。却该趁饱儿睡觉去也。」沙僧笑道：「二哥忒没修养。这气饱饫，如何睡觉？」八戒道：「你那里知道，俗语云：『吃了饭儿不挺尸，肚里没板脂』哩。」

You grow more boorish by the day.這是甚麼去處，只管大呼小叫？What sort of place do you think this is, that you keep shouting and bawling?倘或惱著國王，卻不被他傷害性命？」八戒道：「沒事，沒事。If you anger the king, will he not have us put to death?” Bajie replied, “Nothing will happen, nothing will happen.我們與他親家禮道的，他便不好生怪。We are his relations by marriage, so he cannot very well blame us harshly.常言道：『打不斷的親，罵不斷的鄰。』大家耍子，怕他怎的？」長老叱道，教拿過獃子來，打他二十禪杖。As the saying goes, ‘No beating can sever kinship, and no cursing can sever neighborliness.’ We are all only having some fun—why fear him?” The elder scolded him and ordered them to seize the idiot and give him twenty blows with the monk’s staff.行者果一把揪翻，長老舉杖就打。Xingzhe promptly seized him and threw him down, and the elder raised his staff to strike.獃子喊叫道：「駙馬爺爺，饒罪，饒罪。」傍有陪宴官勸住。The idiot cried, “Mercy, Grandfather Imperial Son-in-Law! Forgive me, forgive me!” The banquet attendants nearby intervened and restrained the elder.獃子爬將起來，突突囔囔的道：「好貴人，好駙馬，親還未成，就行起王法來了。」行者侮著他嘴道：「莫胡說，莫胡說，快早睡去。」The idiot scrambled up and muttered resentfully, “What a grand nobleman, what a grand imperial son-in-law! The marriage is not even made yet, and already he is enforcing the royal law.” Xingzhe covered his mouth and said, “Do not talk nonsense! Do not talk nonsense! Go to sleep at once.”

不覺樂了三四日，正值十二日佳辰。Thus three or four days of festivities passed unnoticed, until the auspicious twelfth day arrived.有光祿寺三部各官回奏道：「臣等自八日奉旨，駙馬府已修完，專等妝奩鋪設。Officials from the three divisions of the Court of Imperial Entertainments reported, “Since receiving Your Majesty’s decree on the eighth, we have completed the imperial son-in-law’s residence; it now awaits only the setting out of the dowry.合巹宴亦已完備，葷素共五百餘席。」國王心喜，欲請駙馬赴席，忽有內宮官對御前啟奏道：「萬歲，正宮娘娘有請。」國王遂退入內宮，只見那三宮皇后、六院嬪妃，引領著公主，都在昭陽宮談笑。The wedding banquet is also fully prepared, with more than five hundred meat and vegetarian tables.” The king was delighted and was about to invite the imperial son-in-law to the feast when a palace officer suddenly reported before the throne, “Your Majesty, the principal empress requests your presence.” The king therefore withdrew into the inner palace, where he found the three empresses and the consorts of the six courts gathered with the princess in Zhaoyang Palace, talking and laughing.真個是花團錦簇，那一片富麗妖嬈，真勝似天堂月殿，不亞於仙府瑤宮。They were truly surrounded by masses of flowers and brocades; that scene of splendor and enchanting beauty surpassed the moon palace in heaven and was in no way inferior to the jasper halls of the immortals.有喜會佳姻新詞四首為證。As proof, there are four new verses on joy, gathering, felicity, and marriage.

卻說國王駕到，那后妃引著公主，並綵女、宮娥，都來迎接。When the king arrived, the empresses and consorts led the princess, together with the palace maidens and attendants, forward to welcome him.國王喜孜孜，進了昭陽宮坐下。Beaming with delight, the king entered Zhaoyang Palace and sat down.后妃等朝拜畢，國王道：「公主賢女，自初八日結綵拋毬，幸遇聖僧，想是心願已足。After the empresses and consorts had paid homage, the king said, “My worthy daughter, on the eighth you decorated the tower and cast down the ball, and fortunately encountered the holy monk; I imagine your heart’s desire is now fulfilled.各衙門官又能體朕心，各項事俱已完備。The officials of every bureau have understood Our wishes, and all the arrangements are complete.今日正是佳期，可早赴合巹之宴，不要錯過時辰。」那公主走近前，倒身下拜，奏道：「父王，乞赦小女萬千之罪，有一言啟奏：這幾日聞得宮官傳說，唐聖僧有三個徒弟，他生得十分醜惡。Today is the auspicious day. You should go early to the wedding banquet and not miss the appointed hour.” The princess stepped forward, prostrated herself, and reported, “Father and King, I beg you to pardon your daughter’s countless offenses and allow me to say one thing. In recent days I have heard the palace officials say that the holy monk from the Tang has three disciples, all exceedingly hideous in appearance.小女不敢見他，恐見時必生恐懼。Your daughter dares not see them, for fear that the sight will terrify her.萬望父王將他發放出城方好，不致驚傷弱體，反為禍害也。」國王道：「孩兒不說，朕幾乎忘了。I earnestly beg Father and King to send them out of the city. Otherwise they may frighten and injure my frail body and turn the happy occasion into calamity.” The king replied, “Had you not mentioned it, child, We would nearly have forgotten.果然生得有些醜惡，連日教他在御花園裡留春亭管待。They are indeed rather ugly. For the past few days they have been entertained in the Pavilion for Detaining Spring in the imperial garden.趁今日就上殿，打發他關文，教他出城，卻好會宴。」公主叩頭謝了恩。Today We shall summon them to court, certify their travel permit, and send them out of the city; then the wedding banquet may conveniently proceed.” The princess kowtowed and thanked him for his grace.國王即出駕上殿，傳旨請駙馬共他三位。The king immediately proceeded to the audience hall and issued an order summoning the imperial son-in-law and his three companions.

How are we to deal with this affair?” Xingzhe replied, “I have already discerned a trace of ill fortune upon the king, but it has not yet overtaken him and so poses no great danger.但只不得公主見面，若得出來，老孫一覷，就知真假，方才動作。The only trouble is that I have not seen the princess. If she comes out, Old Sun need only glance at her to know whether she is true or false, and then I can act.你只管放心。Set your mind at ease.他如今一定來請，打發我等出城。They are certain to summon us now and send the rest of us out of the city.你自應承莫怕，我閃閃身兒就來，緊緊隨護你也。」You need only agree to everything and be unafraid. I shall slip back here in a flash and remain close at hand to protect you.”

師徒們正講，果見當駕官同儀制司來請。While master and disciples were still talking, the officers in attendance and those of the Office of Ceremonial indeed arrived to summon them.行者笑道：「去來，去來。Xingzhe laughed. “Let us go, let us go.必定是與我們送行，好留師父會合。」八戒道：「送行必定有千百兩黃金白銀，我們也好買些人事回去。They must mean to see us off so that Master can remain for the wedding.” Bajie said, “If they are seeing us off, they are sure to give us hundreds or thousands of taels of gold and silver, so that we can buy some presents to take home.到我那丈人家，也再會親耍子兒去耶。」沙僧道：「二哥箝著口，休亂說，只憑大哥主張。」Then we can visit my father-in-law’s house again and enjoy another family gathering.” Sha Seng said, “Second Brother, clamp your mouth shut and stop talking nonsense. We shall follow whatever Elder Brother decides.”

师徒们正讲，果见当驾官同仪制司来请。行者笑道：「去来，去来。必定是与我们送行，好留师父会合。」八戒道：「送行必定有千百两黄金白银，我们也好买些人事回去。到我那丈人家，也再会亲耍子儿去耶。」沙僧道：「二哥箝著口，休乱说，只凭大哥主张。」

遂此將行李、馬匹，俱隨那些官到於丹墀下。They therefore gathered their luggage and horse and followed the officials to the foot of the vermilion steps.國王見了，教請行者三位近前道：「汝等將關文拿上來，朕當用寶、花押，交付汝等，外多備盤纏，送你三位早去靈山見佛。On seeing them, the king ordered Xingzhe and the other two to come forward and said, “Bring up your travel permit. We shall affix Our seal and signature and return it to you, and shall also provide ample traveling expenses, so that you three may set out promptly for Lingshan to see the Buddha.若取經回來，還有重謝。When you return with the scriptures, you shall receive further generous rewards.留駙馬在此，勿得懸念。」行者稱謝。Leave the imperial son-in-law here and do not worry about him.” Xingzhe offered his thanks.遂教沙僧取出關文遞上。He therefore had Sha Seng take out the travel document and present it.國王看了，即用了印，押了花字，又取黃金十錠、白金二十錠，聊達親禮。After reading it, the king stamped it with his seal and added his flourishing signature; he then brought out ten ingots of gold and twenty of silver as a modest token of personal regard.八戒原來財色心重，即去接了。Bajie, being naturally much attached to wealth and beauty, stepped forward at once to accept them.行者朝上唱個喏道：「聒噪，聒噪。」便轉身要走。Wukong saluted the throne and said, “We have troubled you, we have troubled you.” Then he turned to leave.慌得個三藏一轂轆爬起，扯住行者，咬響牙根道：「你們都不顧我就去了？」行者把手捏著三藏手掌，丟個眼色道：「你在這裡寬懷歡會，我等取了經，回來看你。」那長老似信不信的，不肯放手。In alarm, Tripitaka scrambled to his feet, seized Wukong, and said through clenched teeth, “Are you all going off without a thought for me?” Wukong gripped Tripitaka’s palm, gave him a meaningful look, and said, “Stay here at ease and enjoy the festivities. Once we have fetched the scriptures, we shall come back for you.” The elder, half believing and half doubting, refused to let go.多官都看見，以為實是相別而去。All the officials saw this and believed that they were truly bidding farewell and departing.早見國王又請駙馬上殿，著多官送三位出城。Presently the king summoned the prince consort back to the hall and ordered the officials to escort the other three out of the city.長老只得放了手上殿。The elder had no choice but to release his hand and ascend the hall.

行者三人同眾出了朝門，各自相別。Wukong and the other two left the palace gates with the assembled officials, and there they took their leave of one another.八戒道：「我們當真的走哩？」行者不言語，只管走至驛中。Bajie said, “Are we really leaving, then?” Wukong made no reply, but walked straight on to the posthouse.驛丞接入，看茶，擺飯。The postmaster welcomed them in, served tea, and laid out a meal.行者對八戒、沙僧道：「你兩個只在此，切莫出頭。Wukong said to Bajie and Sha Seng, “You two are to stay here and must on no account show yourselves outside.但驛丞問甚麼事情，且含糊答應，莫與我說話。Whatever the postmaster asks you, answer him vaguely for the time being, and do not speak to me.我保師父去也。」I am going to protect Master.”

行者三人同众出了朝门，各自相别。八戒道：「我们当真的走哩？」行者不言语，只管走至驿中。驿丞接入，看茶，摆饭。行者对八戒、沙僧道：「你两个只在此，切莫出头。但驿丞问甚么事情，且含糊答应，莫与我说话。我保师父去也。」

好大聖，拔一根毫毛，吹口仙氣，叫：「變！」即變作本身模樣，與八戒、沙僧同在驛內。What a Great Sage! He plucked out a hair, breathed an immortal breath upon it, and cried, “Change!” It instantly assumed his own appearance and remained in the posthouse with Bajie and Sha Seng.真身卻幌的跳在半空，變作一個蜜蜂兒。His true body, meanwhile, sprang lightly into the air and changed into a tiny honeybee.但見：And this is what could be seen:

好大圣，拔一根毫毛，吹口仙气，叫：「变！」即变作本身模样，与八戒、沙僧同在驿内。真身却幌的跳在半空，变作一个蜜蜂儿。但见：

你看他輕輕的飛入朝中，遠見那唐僧在國王左邊繡墩上坐著，愁眉不展，心存焦燥。See how lightly he flew into the court, where from afar he saw the Tang monk seated on an embroidered stool to the king’s left, his brow furrowed with care and his heart full of anxious agitation.徑飛至他毘盧帽上，悄悄的爬及耳邊，叫道：「師父，我來了，切莫憂慮。」這句話只有唐僧聽見，那夥凡人莫想知覺。He flew straight to the monk’s Vairocana cap, quietly crawled to his ear, and called, “Master, I am here. Do not worry.” Only the Tang monk heard these words; those mere mortals had no hope of perceiving them.唐僧聽見，始覺心寬。On hearing this, the Tang monk at last felt his heart ease.不一時，宮官來請道：「萬歲，合巹嘉筵已排設在鳷鵲宮中，娘娘與公主俱在宮伺候，專請萬歲同貴人會親也。」國王喜之不盡，即同駙馬進宮而去。Before long, a palace officer came and announced, “Your Majesty, the wedding feast has been laid out in Zhique Palace. Her Majesty and the princess are both waiting there and respectfully invite Your Majesty and the honored guest to join the family celebration.” The king was overjoyed and at once entered the inner palace together with the prince consort.正是那：And indeed:

你看他轻轻的飞入朝中，远见那唐僧在国王左边绣墩上坐著，愁眉不展，心存焦燥。径飞至他毘卢帽上，悄悄的爬及耳边，叫道：「师父，我来了，切莫忧虑。」这句话只有唐僧听见，那伙凡人莫想知觉。唐僧听见，始觉心宽。不一时，宫官来请道：「万岁，合卺嘉筵已排设在鳷鹊宫中，娘娘与公主俱在宫伺候，专请万岁同贵人会亲也。」国王喜之不尽，即同驸马进宫而去。正是那：
