At Gold-Level Prefecture the Lantern Festival and the Rhinoceros Demons

091Chapter 91

The tale tells how Tang Seng and his three disciples left Yuhua City and journeyed on in peace and safety, through what might truly be called a land of perfect bliss. After another five or six days’ journey, they saw yet another walled city.:「?」:「Tang Seng asked Xingzhe, “What place is this?” Xingzhe replied, “It is a walled city.。」But though there is a flagpole on the wall, there is no flag, so I cannot tell what place it is. We shall ask when we draw nearer.” When they reached the eastern suburb, they found the teahouses and wineshops bustling on either side, and the rice markets and oil mills full of activity.Several idle young loafers roaming the streets saw Zhu Bajie’s long snout, Sha Heshang’s black face, and Sun Xingzhe’s red eyes, and crowded around, jostling one another for a look, though none dared approach and question them.Tang Seng’s palms were sweating, for fear that his disciples might cause trouble. They passed several more alleyways, yet still had not reached the city proper.Suddenly they saw the gate of a monastery, over which were written the three characters “Ciyun Monastery.”:「?」:「。」Tang Seng said, “Why do we not go in, rest the horse awhile, and ask for a vegetarian meal?” Xingzhe replied, “Good, good.” So all four entered together.Inside, they beheld:

:「?」:「。」As the four were looking about, a monk came out from beneath the cloister and bowed to Tang Seng, asking, “From where have you come, reverend master?” Tang Seng replied, “This disciple comes from the Tang realm in the Central Land.” At once the monk prostrated himself.:「?」:「Tang Seng hurriedly helped him up, saying, “Why does the abbot pay me so profound an homage?” The monk pressed his palms together and said, “Those among us who incline toward goodness, who read the scriptures and invoke the Buddha, all hope through cultivation to be reborn in your Central Land.。」:「Now that I behold the master’s noble bearing and attire, I see that you must indeed have cultivated merit in a former life to enjoy such blessings in this one; therefore I bowed before you.” Tang Seng smiled and said, “You embarrass me, you embarrass me.This disciple is merely a wandering monk. What blessings do I enjoy?。」殿You, abbot, living here at leisure and ease, are the one who truly enjoys good fortune.” The monk led Tang Seng into the main hall, where he bowed before the Buddha images; only then did Tang Seng call his disciples inside. It turned out that when the three disciples saw the monk speaking with their master, they had turned their faces away and stood together, one holding the horse and the others guarding the luggage, so the monk had paid them no attention.」,Only when they suddenly heard Tang Seng call, “Disciples,” did the three turn around.:「At the sight of them, the monk cried out in alarm, “Good heavens!?」:「。」How is it that your eminent disciples look so hideous?” Tang Seng replied, “Hideous they may be, but they possess considerable magic powers, and throughout my journey I have depended greatly on their protection.”

While they were speaking, several more monks came out from within and bowed.:「。」:「?」:「The first monk said to the newcomers, “This reverend master is a distinguished person from the Great Tang in the Central Land, and those three are his eminent disciples.” Both delighted and afraid, the monks asked, “Master, what brings you from the great realm of the Central Land to this place?” Tang Seng said, “By sacred decree of the Tang emperor, I am journeying to Ling Mountain to worship the Buddha and seek the scriptures.。」As we happened to pass through your honored region, we came especially to your noble monastery, first to ask what place this is, and second to take a vegetarian meal before continuing on our way.” Every monk was delighted, and they invited the pilgrims into the abbot’s quarters. In the abbot’s quarters were several other monks preparing a vegetarian feast for some lay patrons.:「The monks who had entered first called out, “All of you, come and see what people from the Central Land look like.It turns out that in the Central Land some are handsome and some are ugly.。」The handsome one is truly beyond painting or description, while the ugly ones are exceedingly grotesque.” The other monks and the patrons of the feast all came forward to meet them. After the introductions, everyone sat down.:「?」:「。」:「?」:「When tea had been taken, Tang Seng asked, “What is the name of this honored place?” The monks replied, “This is an outlying prefecture of the kingdom of Tianzhu, called Jinping Prefecture.” Tang Seng asked, “How far is it from your prefecture to Ling Mountain?” The monks answered, “From here to the capital is two thousand li.That is a road we ourselves have traveled.西。」But we have never gone westward from there to Ling Mountain, so we do not know how much farther it may be and dare not answer rashly.” Tang Seng thanked them.

Before long, the vegetarian meal was served.:「。」:「?」:「After the meal Tang Seng wished to depart, but the monks and the patrons warmly urged him to stay, saying, “Master, remain at ease for a day or two. There is no harm in enjoying yourself until after the Lantern Festival.” Tang Seng asked in surprise, “Traveling as I do, I know only that there are mountains and rivers ahead, and fear only meeting monsters and demons that delay my journey. I have lost all track of time—when is the Lantern Festival?” The monks laughed and said, “Master, your heart is so intent upon worshiping the Buddha and awakening to Chan that you give no thought to such things.Today is the thirteenth day of the first month, and this evening the lanterns will be lit for their trial display. The day after tomorrow, the fifteenth, is the Shangyuan Festival. The lanterns will not be taken down until the eighteenth or nineteenth. The people here delight in festivities, and our lord prefect cares for his people; throughout the region lanterns are hung high, while pipes and flutes sound all night long. There is also a Golden Lantern Bridge, handed down from ancient times, whose display remains splendid to this day.。」Good masters, stay for several days. Though ours is a humble mountain monastery, we can well afford to entertain you.” Tang Seng had no choice, and so they all remained.殿That evening the bells and drums in the Buddha hall sounded to the heavens, for the faithful of the neighborhood were bringing lanterns to offer before the Buddha.Tang Seng and his disciples came out of the abbot’s quarters to view the lanterns, then each retired to sleep.

The next day, the monks again offered them a vegetarian meal. When they had eaten, they all strolled together through the rear garden for amusement. It was indeed a lovely place, as these words attest:

The master and disciples spent the whole day enjoying the sights; after viewing the lanterns in the hall, they went out again to admire the lights and amuse themselves. There they beheld:

Sanzang and the monks viewed the lanterns within the monastery, then went out to enjoy themselves in the streets of the eastern suburb.Only at the second watch did they return and retire.

:「。」The next day Tang Seng said to the monks, “This disciple once made a vow to sweep a pagoda. Since today is the Shangyuan Festival, I ask the abbot to open the pagoda door and allow me to fulfill my vow.” The monks accordingly opened the door.Sha Seng took the kasaya and followed Tang Seng.。……On reaching the first story, Tang Seng put on the kasaya and finished bowing and praying before the Buddha; then he swept that story with a broom, removed the kasaya, and handed it to Sha Seng. …He then swept the second story and continued floor by floor until he reached the very top.On every story of the pagoda there were Buddha images, and windows opened everywhere; after sweeping each story, he admired its sights and praised its beauty.By the time he finished sweeping and came down, night had fallen and all the lanterns had again been lit.

This night was the fifteenth, the night of the Lantern Festival itself.:「?」The monks said, “Reverend master, the night before last we saw lanterns only here at our humble monastery and in the suburb. Tonight is the festival proper; why not enter the city and see the Golden Lanterns?” Tang Seng gladly agreed and entered the city with his three disciples and many monks from the monastery to view the lanterns.Just so:

A poem bears witness. The poem says:

At this time the night curfew was lifted, and all was a noisy bustle amid countless throngs of people.西There were dancers, stilt-walkers, men dressed as ghosts, and elephant riders, clustered here in the east and gathered there in the west—a spectacle without end.

When at last they reached the Golden Lantern Bridge, Tang Seng and the monks went closer to look and found that there were three golden lanterns. Each lantern was as large as a great vat, with a delicately wrought two-story pavilion mounted above it.They were all woven from fine gold wire, with thin panes of colored glass set within; their radiance outshone the moon, and their oil gave off a rich fragrance.:「Tang Seng turned to the monks and asked, “What oil is used in these lanterns??」:「Why does it give off so wondrous a fragrance?” The monks replied, “Master, you do not know.Behind our prefecture lies a county called Mintian, two hundred and forty li across.Every year, when labor levies are assessed and assigned, two hundred and forty wealthy households are charged with providing the lantern oil.使The other prefectural and county levies are bearable enough; only these great households suffer grievously, for each household, in the year of its turn, must spend over two hundred taels of silver. This is no ordinary oil, but fragrant suhe oil. Each tael of this oil costs two taels of silver, so every jin costs thirty-two taels. There are three lanterns, each vat holding five hundred jin; the three vats contain fifteen hundred jin in all, costing forty-eight thousand taels of silver.使。」 With miscellaneous expenses added, the total comes to more than fifty thousand taels, yet the lamps burn for only three nights.” Xingzhe asked, “How can so much oil be exhausted in three nights?” The monks replied, “Each vat contains forty-nine great wicks, made from bundles of lamp rush wrapped in floss silk, each as thick as a hen’s egg.。」:「。」 Once tonight has passed and the Buddha has manifested himself, by tomorrow night the oil will be gone and the lanterns will grow dim.” Bajie laughed at their side and said, “I expect the Buddha takes the oil away with him.” The monks replied, “That is precisely what is said. From ancient times to the present, every household in the city has handed down the same tale. When the oil runs dry, everyone says that the Buddha has accepted the lantern offering, and then the five grains will naturally yield a bountiful harvest.調But if in any year the oil does not run dry, the crops will fail from drought and wind and rain will fall out of season.。」That is why every household wishes to make this offering.”

As they spoke, a roaring wind suddenly arose in midair, terrifying the lantern-viewers and sending them scattering in every direction.:「The monks could not keep their footing either and said, “Reverend master, let us go back.。」:「?」:「The wind has come: it is the Buddha descending to bestow his blessing and view the lanterns.” Tang Seng asked, “How do you know it is the Buddha coming to see the lanterns?” The monks answered, “It is like this every year: before the third watch, a wind always comes.。」:「。」We know that it is the Buddhas descending to bestow blessings, and so everyone withdraws.” Tang Seng said, “This disciple is one who longs for the Buddha, invokes the Buddha, and worships the Buddha. On this splendid occasion, if the Buddhas truly descend, it would be a very good thing to bow before them here.” Though the monks repeatedly urged him, he would not leave. Before long, three figures of Buddhas indeed appeared within the wind and approached the lanterns.Tang Seng hurried to the crest of the bridge and prostrated himself.:「。」Xingzhe hastily pulled him up, saying, “Master, these are no good beings; they must be evil spirits.” Before he had finished speaking, the lantern light dimmed, and with a whoosh they seized Tang Seng, mounted the wind, and carried him away.Alas!Who knew from what mountain or cave came these true monsters, who for years had masqueraded as Buddhas to view the Golden Lanterns?Bajie was so frightened that he searched on both sides, while Sha Seng called out in every direction.:「Xingzhe cried, “Brothers, there is no need to shout here.。」:「?」:「At the height of his joy, Master has met with sorrow: the demons have already carried him off.” The monks asked fearfully, “Grandfather, how do you know demons carried him away?” Xingzhe laughed and said, “So you mortals have failed to recognize them all these years and have been deceived by evil spirits, taking them for true Buddhas descending to bestow blessings and accepting this offering of lanterns. Those who appeared in Buddha form when the wind came just now were three demons. My master could not recognize them either. He went to the top of the bridge and bowed, whereupon they dimmed the lantern light by trickery, took vessels to hold the oil, and carried off my master as well.。」:「?」:「。」I was only a little slow in pursuing them, and so the three transformed into wind and fled.” Sha Seng asked, “Elder Brother, what are we to do now?” Xingzhe replied, “Do not hesitate. You two return to the monastery with the others and guard the horse and luggage, while old Sun follows this wind in pursuit.”

The Great Sage sprang at once onto his somersault cloud and rose into midair; catching the scent of the foul wind, he sped after it toward the northeast. He pursued it until dawn, when suddenly the wind ceased. Before him stood a great mountain, exceedingly steep and rugged, a truly towering peak—a fine mountain indeed:

As the Great Sage searched for a path along the cliff, he saw four men driving three sheep down the western slope, all crying together, “Prosperity begins!” Flashing his Fiery Eyes and Golden Pupils, the Great Sage looked carefully and recognized the four duty messengers presiding over the year, month, day, and hour, who had come in disguised forms. The Great Sage immediately drew out his iron cudgel and shook it until it was as thick as a rice bowl and some twelve feet long.:「?」:「。」:「Leaping down from the cliff, he shouted, “Where do you skulking, cringing fellows think you are going?” Seeing that he had exposed their ruse, the four duty gods hastily scattered the three sheep, resumed their true forms, stepped to the roadside, and bowed, saying, “Great Sage, forgive us, forgive us.” Xingzhe said, “I have had no occasion to employ you lately, and seeing old Sun take things easily, every one of you has grown slack. You do not even come to pay me a visit—what have you to say for yourselves??」:「Why did you not secretly protect my master? Where have you all been?” The duty gods replied, “Your master relaxed his Chan resolve and lingered in pleasure at Ciyun Monastery in Jinping Prefecture. Thus, when prosperity reached its height, adversity arose, and when joy was fullest, sorrow came; now he has been captured by evil spirits. The guardian Jialan deities beside him are still protecting him.。」:「?」:「』,。」:「?」:「Knowing that the Great Sage had pursued through the night, we feared you might not know this mountain country, and so came especially to bring you word.” Xingzhe asked, “If you came to bring word, why did you conceal your identities, drive three sheep before you, and go about shouting?” The duty gods replied, “We produced these three sheep to accord with the phrase ‘prosperity begins.’ It is called ‘the three yang usher in prosperity,’ and will break through your master’s present adversity.” Xingzhe angrily raised his cudgel to strike them, but seeing the meaning in their device, he spared them, put away his weapon, and turned his anger into delight, asking, “Is this mountain where the demons dwell?” The duty gods replied, “Indeed it is, indeed it is.This mountain is called Qinglong Mountain, and within it is a cave called Xuanying Cave.Three demons dwell in the cave: the eldest is called Great King Bihan, the second Great King Bishu, and the third Great King Bichen. These demons have been here for a thousand years.Since childhood they have loved to consume fragrant suhe oil. After becoming spirits, they came here disguised as Buddhas and deceived the officials and people of Jinping Prefecture into erecting the Golden Lanterns and filling them with fragrant suhe oil.Every year at the middle of the first month, they assume Buddha forms and come to collect the oil.使This year, when they saw your master, they recognized him as a holy monk and carried him into their cave as well. Within a few days they mean to cut his flesh to pieces and fry it in fragrant suhe oil before eating it.。」Make haste and use your powers to rescue him.”

On hearing this, Xingzhe dismissed the four duty gods, rounded the cliff, and searched for the demons’ cave. After traveling only a few li, he saw a stone cliff beside a ravine. At the foot of the cliff stood a stone dwelling with two stone doors, half open and half closed.」。Beside the doors stood a stone tablet bearing six characters: “Qinglong Mountain, Xuanying Cave.”:「Xingzhe did not dare enter rashly. Planting his feet, he called out, “Monsters!。」:「!」:「Send my master out at once!” With a clattering roar, the doors flew wide and a swarm of ox-headed fiends rushed out, asking stupidly and clumsily, “Who are you, to dare shout here?” Xingzhe replied, “I am the senior disciple of the holy monk Tang Sanzang, who is journeying from the Great Tang in the Eastern Land to fetch the scriptures. While passing through Jinping Prefecture to view the lanterns, my master was carried here by your demon lords.Return him quickly, and your lives will be spared;。」otherwise I shall overturn your lair and reduce your whole horde of fiends to blood and pus.”

:「。」Hearing this, the little demons hurried inside and reported, “Great Kings, disaster! Disaster!” The three old demons had taken Tang Seng to the deepest recesses of the cave and, without troubling to ask right from wrong, had ordered their underlings to strip off his clothes, draw clear water from the torrent and wash him clean; they planned to slice and mince him finely, then fry him in fragrant suhe oil and eat him.」,When the eldest suddenly heard the cry of “Disaster,” he was startled and asked what had happened.:「A little demon said, “Before the main gate stands a monk with a hairy face and a mouth like the Thunder Lord’s, shouting that the Great Kings have carried off his master and ordering you to send him out at once if you would spare our lives;。」:「“Otherwise, they will overturn our lair and turn us all into pus and blood!” Hearing this, the old demons were each alarmed and said, “We have only just captured this fellow and have not yet asked his name or origins. Little ones, put his clothes back on him and bring him here for questioning, so we may learn exactly who he is and whence he comes.”

The demons surged forward, untied Tang Sanzang, dressed him, and shoved him before the throne.:「。」:「Tang Sanzang was so terrified that he knelt trembling below and cried only, “Great Kings, spare my life! Spare my life!” The three demons asked in one voice, “From what place do you come, monk??」:「Why did you not get out of the way when you saw the image of the Buddha, but instead obstructed our path through the clouds?” Tang Sanzang kowtowed and said, “This poor monk was sent by the sovereign of the Great Tang in the Eastern Lands to the Great Thunderclap Monastery in Tianzhu to worship the Buddha and fetch the scriptures. When I reached Ciyun Monastery in Jinping Prefecture and went there for a vegetarian meal, the monks graciously kept me for the Lantern Festival to see the lanterns.。」:「While I was on Golden Lantern Bridge, I saw Your Majesties appear in the form of Buddhas; being but mortal flesh with ordinary eyes, I bowed as soon as I saw the Buddha, and thus obstructed Your Majesties’ path through the clouds.” The demon said, “The journey from your Eastern Lands to this place is very long. How many are there in your company? What are all their names?。」:「Give us a full and truthful account at once, and I will spare your life.” Tang Sanzang said, “This poor monk’s secular name is Chen Xuanzang, and from childhood I was a monk at Jinshan Monastery.Later, by imperial favor of the Tang emperor, I was appointed an ecclesiastical official at Hongfu Monastery in Chang’an.Then, because Chancellor Wei Zheng beheaded the old dragon of the Jing River in a dream, the Tang emperor journeyed through the underworld; after returning to life in the world of light, he convened a Grand Rite of Water and Land to deliver the departed souls, and chose this poor monk to preside over the altar and expound the supreme ordinances.西Fortunately, the Bodhisattva Guanyin appeared and instructed this poor monk, saying that the Great Thunderclap Monastery in the Western Heaven possessed the scriptures of the Three Baskets, which could deliver the dead and raise them to Heaven, and sent me to fetch them. I was therefore given the religious name Sanzang and took Tang as my surname in honor of the dynasty, so people call me Tang Sanzang.I have three disciples.。」:「?」:「The first bears the surname Sun and is named Wukong the Pilgrim, the Great Sage Equaling Heaven who returned to the true path.” At this name, all the demons started in alarm and asked, “Is this Great Sage Equaling Heaven the one who wreaked havoc in the Celestial Palace five hundred years ago?” Tang Sanzang replied, “The very same, the very same. The second bears the surname Zhu and is named Wuneng, or Bajie; he is the Marshal Tianpeng reborn.。」The third bears the surname Sha and is named Wujing the Monk; he is the Curtain-Raising General descended to the mortal world.”

:「Hearing this, the three demon kings were each alarmed and said, “Luckily we did not eat him.。」Little ones, lock Tang Sanzang in chains at the back for now; when we have captured his three disciples, we shall eat them all together.” They then mustered a band of mountain-ox, water-buffalo, and yellow-ox spirits, who took up their weapons, marched outside, sounded the signal, waved their banners, and beat their drums.:「?」The three demons, fully armed and accoutred, came outside and shouted, “Who dares make such an uproar in our domain?” The Pilgrim darted up onto a rocky cliff and looked closely. The demons appeared thus:

He also saw demons great and small, some tall and some short, some fat and some thin, all ox-headed monsters wielding spears and cudgels.」、「」、「」。There were three great banners, clearly inscribed “Great King Warder of Cold,” “Great King Warder of Heat,” and “Great King Warder of Dust.”

:「Sun Wukong watched for a while, but could restrain himself no longer. Stepping forward, he shouted, “You brazen thieving monsters!?」:「Do you recognize old Sun?” The demon shouted, “Are you Sun Wukong, who caused havoc in the Celestial Palace?Truly, we had heard your name but never seen your face; now that we see you, you are enough to shame the heavenly gods.。」:「。」So this is all you are: a wretched little macaque.” The Pilgrim flew into a rage and cursed, “You lamp-oil-stealing thieves, you slippery-tongued monsters! Stop your nonsense and return my master at once!” Rushing forward, he swung his iron staff and struck. The three old demons raised their three different weapons and hastily parried him.A splendid battle they fought in the mountain hollow:

With his single staff, Sun Wukong fought the three demons for a hundred and fifty rounds. Evening was drawing near, yet neither side had prevailed. Then the Great King Warder of Dust flourished his knotted-rattan staff, leapt beyond the battle line, and waved his banner. The horde of ox-headed monsters swarmed forward, surrounded the Pilgrim in the heart of the encirclement, brandished their weapons, and rained chaotic blows upon him.Seeing that matters had turned against him, the Pilgrim sprang aloft with a whoosh on his somersault cloud and fled the field in defeat. The demons did not pursue him, but recalled their horde, had supper prepared, and all ate their fill. They also had a lesser demon take a bowl to Tang Sanzang, intending to deal with him only after Sun Wukong and the others had been captured. But the master, being both a lifelong abstainer from food after noon and overcome with grief, sat weeping and dared not let the food touch his lips; of this we shall say no more.

:「。」:「Now the Pilgrim rode his cloud back to Ciyun Monastery and called, “Brothers!” Bajie and Sha Seng had been anxiously waiting and conferring together; when they heard his call, they came out together to meet him and asked, “Elder Brother, why have you taken the whole day to return??」:「What, in truth, has become of Master?” The Pilgrim laughed and said, “Last night I followed them by the sound of the wind, and at daybreak I reached a mountain but could find no trace of them.Fortunately, the Duty Gods of the Four Watches brought word that the mountain is called Qinglong Mountain and that it contains a cave called Xuanying Cave.Three demons live there, called the Great King Warder of Cold, the Great King Warder of Heat, and the Great King Warder of Dust.It turns out that for many years they have been stealing the oil here, assuming false images of the Buddha to deceive the officials and people of Jinping Prefecture. This year they encountered us, and, too witless to know better, they even carried Master off.Once old Sun had ascertained the facts, I ordered the Duty Gods and the others to protect Master in secret, while I went near the cave entrance and hurled challenges at them. The three monsters came out together, all looking like ox-headed ghosts.使使使The first wielded a battle-axe, the second a great saber, and the third a rattan staff.Behind them they brought a whole den of ox-headed monsters, waving banners and beating drums. They fought old Sun all day, and the battle ended evenly matched. Then a demon king waved his banner, and all the lesser demons came rushing in.。」:「?」:「?」:「。」:「Seeing that it was growing late and fearing I could not prevail, I returned on my somersault cloud.” Bajie said, “Could they be ghost kings from Fengdu making mischief?” Sha Seng asked, “How did you come to guess that they are ghost kings from Fengdu making mischief?” Bajie laughed and said, “Elder Brother called them ox-headed ghosts, so naturally I knew.” The Pilgrim said, “No, no.。」:「。」Judging by old Sun’s eye, those monsters are three rhinoceroses that have become spirits.” Bajie said, “If they are rhinoceroses, let us capture them and saw off their horns; they would be worth a good many taels of silver.”

As they were speaking, the monks asked, “Lord Sun, will you take your evening meal?” The Pilgrim replied, “I may as well eat a little; though it would not matter if I ate nothing.” The monks said, “After fighting all day, my lord, can you not be hungry?” The Pilgrim laughed and said, “How could a mere scrap of a day make me hungry?。」Old Sun once went five hundred years without food or drink.” The monks did not know this was true and took it merely for a jest.Presently the food was brought, and the Pilgrim ate some.:「。」:「He said, “Let us settle down and sleep for now. Tomorrow we shall all go and confront them; if we capture the demon kings, we should be able to rescue Master.” Sha Seng, standing nearby, said, “What are you saying, Elder Brother?:『。』As the proverb goes, ‘Delay brings wisdom.’ But suppose the demons do not sleep tonight and harm Master—what then?It would be better to go now and raise such an uproar that they are caught unprepared; only then can we readily rescue Master.。」:「。」:「?」If we delay even a little, I fear something may go wrong.” Hearing this, Bajie roused his divine might and said, “Brother Sha is right. Let us all take advantage of the moonlight and go subdue the demons.” The Pilgrim agreed and at once instructed the monks, “Guard our luggage and horses. When we have captured the demons, we shall bring them before the prefect as proof that their Buddhas were false, put an end to the levy of lamp oil, and relieve the hardships of the common people throughout the prefecture. Would that not be well?” The monks obeyed. The three of them then mounted their auspicious clouds and flew out of the city.Indeed:

What victory or defeat awaited them on this expedition remains unknown; listen to the explanation in the next chapter.

What it’s about

The pilgrims reach Jinping Prefecture during the Lantern Festival and stay at the Charity Cloud Monastery. The city displays elaborate lamps, but its most important annual observance is an offering of fragrant oil to three supposed Buddhas. Sanzang eagerly joins the worshippers. At midnight the three figures appear, summon a cold wind and carry him away, revealing that the objects of local devotion are spirits rather than enlightened beings.

Wukong, Bajie and Sha Wujing pursue the abductors to Green-Dragon Mountain and learn that they are three rhinoceros spirits living in Dark-Mystery Cave. The captive Sanzang is questioned and confined while his disciples challenge the cave. A festival meant to generate merit has instead provisioned predators with oil and delivered them a holy victim. The chapter closes after the first clashes, with disguise exposed but rescue still dependent on learning what powers the rhinoceroses command.

When it was written 背景

Lantern festivals traditionally join public spectacle, religious offering and hopes for blessing. Here repeated donations have made counterfeit sanctity an economic institution: the spirits consume a vast quantity of oil because the whole prefecture trusts their appearance. Learners can follow 元夜, 燈, 香油 and 佛 as celebration turns into abduction. The episode does not mock devotion itself; it asks how reverence can distinguish its proper object, a final variation on the novel's long concern with appearances that imitate religious authority.
