卻說孫大聖同八戒、沙僧出城頭，覿面相迎，見那夥妖精都是些雜毛獅子：黃獅精在前引領，狻猊獅、摶象獅在左，白澤獅、伏狸獅在右，猱獅、雪獅在後，中間卻是一個九頭獅子。Now Sun Dasheng, together with Bajie and Shaseng, came out above the city wall to meet the enemy head-on, and saw that the band of demons were all lions of motley fur: the Yellow Lion Demon led in front; the Suanni Lion and Elephant-Grappling Lion were on the left; the Baize Lion and Raccoon-Subduing Lion were on the right; the Macaque Lion and Snow Lion brought up the rear; and in their midst was a nine-headed lion.那青臉兒怪執一面錦鏽團花寶幢，緊挨著九頭獅子；The blue-faced monster bore a splendid brocade banner embroidered with clustered flowers and kept close beside the nine-headed lion;刁鑽古怪兒、古怪刁鑽兒打兩面紅旗。Diaozuan Guguai and Guguai Diaozuan carried two red flags.齊齊的都佈在坎宮之地。They were all drawn up together in the northern quarter.

却说孙大圣同八戒、沙僧出城头，觌面相迎，见那伙妖精都是些杂毛狮子：黄狮精在前引领，狻猊狮、抟象狮在左，白泽狮、伏狸狮在右，猱狮、雪狮在后，中间却是一个九头狮子。那青脸儿怪执一面锦锈团花宝幢，紧挨著九头狮子；刁钻古怪儿、古怪刁钻儿打两面红旗。齐齐的都布在坎宫之地。

八戒莽撞，走近前罵道：「偷寶貝的賊怪，你去那裡夥這幾個毛團來此怎的？」黃獅精切齒罵道：「潑狠禿廝！Bajie rashly strode forward and cursed, “You thieving monster who stole our treasures! What have you brought these balls of fur here for?” Grinding his teeth, the Yellow Lion Demon cursed back, “You savage, bald scoundrel!昨日三個敵我一個，我敗回去，讓你為人罷了，你怎麼這般狠惡，燒了我的洞府，損了我的山場，傷了我的眷族？Yesterday, when three of you fought me alone, I withdrew in defeat and let you have your way; but how could you be so vicious as to burn my cave, lay waste my mountain grounds, and harm my kin?我和你冤仇深如大海，不要走，吃你老爺一鏟。」好八戒，舉鈀就迎。The hatred between us is as deep as the sea! Do not flee—taste a blow from your lord’s spade!” Gallant Bajie raised his rake to meet him.兩個才交手還未見高低，那猱獅精掄一根鐵蒺藜，雪獅精使一條三楞簡，徑來奔打。The two had scarcely crossed weapons, with neither yet gaining the upper hand, when the Macaque Lion Demon brandished an iron caltrop-club and the Snow Lion Demon wielded a three-edged mace, charging straight in to strike.八戒發一聲喊道：「來得好！」你看這壁廂，沙和尚急掣降妖杖，近前相助。Bajie shouted, “Come on, then!” On this side, Shaseng hastily drew his demon-subduing staff and went forward to help.又見那狻猊精、白澤精與摶象、伏狸二精，一擁齊上。Then the Suanni Demon, the Baize Demon, the Elephant-Grappling Demon, and the Raccoon-Subduing Demon all surged forward together.這裡孫大聖使金箍棒架住群精。Here Sun Dasheng wielded his gold-banded cudgel and held off the entire pack of demons.狻猊使悶棍，白澤使銅鎚，摶象使鋼槍，伏狸使鉞斧。The Suanni wielded a heavy staff, the Baize a bronze hammer, the Elephant-Gr grappler a steel spear, and the Raccoon-Subduer a battle-axe.那七個獅子精，這三個狠和尚，好殺：Those seven lion demons and these three fierce monks fought a splendid battle:

棍鎚槍斧三楞簡，蒺藜骨朵四明鏟。Staff and hammer, spear and axe, three-edged mace; caltrop-club, knobbed club, and four-bladed spade.

七獅七器甚鋒芒，圍戰三僧齊吶喊。Seven lions with seven keen-edged arms surrounded three monks, all shouting as they fought.

大聖金箍鐵棒兇，沙僧寶杖人間罕。Dasheng’s gold-banded iron cudgel was fearsome; Shaseng’s precious staff was unmatched in the mortal world.

大圣金箍铁棒凶，沙僧宝杖人间罕。

八戒顛風騁勢雄，釘鈀晃亮光華慘。Bajie raged like a mad gale, displaying his might; his nine-pronged rake flashed with a baleful gleam.

前遮後擋各施功，左架右迎都勇敢。Blocking before and guarding behind, each showed his skill; parrying left and meeting right, all fought bravely.

城頭王子助威風，擂鼓篩鑼齊壯膽。From the city wall the princes cheered them on, beating drums and clashing gongs to hearten them.

城头王子助威风，擂鼓筛锣齐壮胆。

投來搶去弄神通，殺得昏蒙天地反。They lunged and grappled, displaying their magic arts, fighting until all grew dim and Heaven and Earth seemed overturned.

那一夥妖精齊與大聖三人，戰經半日，不覺天晚。That band of demons fought Dasheng and his two companions for half a day, until evening fell unawares.八戒口吐粘涎，看看腳軟，虛幌一鈀，敗下陣去。Sticky drool hung from Bajie’s mouth, and his legs were plainly weakening; he feinted with his rake and retreated from the field.被那雪獅、猱獅二精喝道：「那裡走？The Snow Lion and Macaque Lion demons shouted after him, “Where do you think you are going?看打。」獃子躲閃不及，被他照脊梁上打了一簡，睡在地下，只叫：「罷了，罷了。」兩個精把八戒採鬃拖尾，扛將去見那九頭獅子，報道：「祖爺，我等拿了一個來也。」Take this!” The fool could not dodge in time and was struck across the spine with the mace; he fell flat on the ground, crying only, “I’m done for! I’m done for!” The two demons seized Bajie by the bristles and tail, carried him off to the nine-headed lion, and reported, “Grandfather, we have captured one of them!”

那一伙妖精齐与大圣三人，战经半日，不觉天晚。八戒口吐粘涎，看看脚软，虚幌一钯，败下阵去。被那雪狮、猱狮二精喝道：「那里走？看打。」呆子躲闪不及，被他照脊梁上打了一简，睡在地下，只叫：「罢了，罢了。」两个精把八戒采鬃拖尾，扛将去见那九头狮子，报道：「祖爷，我等拿了一个来也。」

說不了，沙僧、行者也都戰敗，眾妖精一齊趕來。Before they had finished speaking, Shaseng and the Pilgrim were also driven back, and all the demons came rushing in pursuit.被行者拔一把毫毛，嚼碎噴將去，叫聲：「變！」即變做百十個小行者，圍圍繞繞，將那白澤、狻猊、摶象、伏狸並金毛獅怪圍裹在中。The Pilgrim plucked a handful of hairs, chewed them to pieces, spat them out, and cried, “Change!” They instantly became over a hundred little Pilgrims, who closed in on every side and surrounded the Baize, Suanni, Elephant-Grappling, Raccoon-Subduing, and Golden-Furred Lion demons.沙僧、行者卻又上前攢打。Shaseng and the Pilgrim then advanced again and attacked them from all sides.到晚，拿住狻猊、白澤，走了伏狸、摶象。By evening they had captured the Suanni and Baize, though the Raccoon-Subduing and Elephant-Grappling demons escaped.金毛報知老怪。Golden-Fur reported the news to the old demon.老怪見失了二獅，吩咐：「把豬八戒綑了，不可傷他性命。Seeing that two lions had been lost, the old demon ordered, “Bind Zhu Bajie, but do not harm his life.待他還我二獅，卻將八戒與他；When he returns my two lions, we shall give Bajie back to him;他若無知，壞了我二獅，即將八戒殺了對命。」當晚群妖安歇城外不題。but if he is witless enough to kill them, we shall kill Bajie in payment for their lives.” That night the demons rested outside the city, and we speak no more of them.

说不了，沙僧、行者也都战败，众妖精一齐赶来。被行者拔一把毫毛，嚼碎喷将去，叫声：「变！」即变做百十个小行者，围围绕绕，将那白泽、狻猊、抟象、伏狸并金毛狮怪围裹在中。沙僧、行者却又上前攒打。到晚，拿住狻猊、白泽，走了伏狸、抟象。金毛报知老怪。老怪见失了二狮，吩咐：「把猪八戒捆了，不可伤他性命。待他还我二狮，却将八戒与他；他若无知，坏了我二狮，即将八戒杀了对命。」当晚群妖安歇城外不题。

卻說孫大聖把兩個獅子精擡近城邊，老王見了，即傳令開門，差二三十個校尉，拿繩趕出門，綁了獅精，扛入城裡。Sun Dasheng, meanwhile, had the two lion demons carried to the city walls; when the old king saw them, he immediately ordered the gates opened and sent twenty or thirty officers out with ropes to bind the lion demons and carry them into the city.孫大聖收了法毛，同沙僧徑至城樓上，見了唐僧。Sun Dasheng recalled his magic hairs and went straight up the city tower with Shaseng to see Tang Seng.唐僧道：「這場事甚是利害呀。Tang Seng said, “That was a most perilous battle.悟能性命，不知有無？」行者道：「沒事，我們把這兩個妖精拿了，他那裡斷不敢傷。I do not know whether Wuneng is alive or dead.” The Pilgrim replied, “Nothing will happen to him; now that we have captured these two demons, they will certainly not dare to hurt him.且將二精牢拴緊縛，待明早抵換八戒也。」三個小王子對行者叩頭道：「師父先前賭鬥，只見一身；For now, have these two demons securely fettered and tightly bound, and tomorrow morning we shall exchange them for Bajie.” The three young princes kowtowed to the Pilgrim and said, “Master, when you first engaged them, we saw only one of you;及後佯輸而回，卻怎麼就有百十位師身？but after you feigned defeat and withdrew, how did there suddenly come to be over a hundred masters with your form?及至拿住妖精，近城來還是一身。And once the demons had been captured and you approached the city, you were one again.此是甚麼法力？」行者笑道：「我身上有八萬四千毫毛，以一化十，以十化百，百千萬億之變化，皆身外身之法也。」那王子一個個頂禮，即時擺上齋來，就在城樓上吃了。What sort of magic power is this?” The Pilgrim laughed and said, “I have eighty-four thousand hairs upon my body. One can become ten and ten can become a hundred; all the hundreds, thousands, millions, and billions of transformations are produced by the art of bodies beyond the body.” The princes bowed to the ground one after another, and a vegetarian meal was served at once, which they ate upon the city tower.各垛口上都要燈籠旗幟，梆鈴鑼鼓，支更傳箭，放炮吶喊。Lanterns and banners were placed at every battlement, while clappers, bells, gongs, and drums sounded; the watches were posted and signals passed, and cannon fire and battle cries rang out.

却说孙大圣把两个狮子精抬近城边，老王见了，即传令开门，差二三十个校尉，拿绳赶出门，绑了狮精，扛入城里。孙大圣收了法毛，同沙僧径至城楼上，见了唐僧。唐僧道：「这场事甚是利害呀。悟能性命，不知有无？」行者道：「没事，我们把这两个妖精拿了，他那里断不敢伤。且将二精牢拴紧缚，待明早抵换八戒也。」三个小王子对行者叩头道：「师父先前赌斗，只见一身；及后佯输而回，却怎么就有百十位师身？及至拿住妖精，近城来还是一身。此是甚么法力？」行者笑道：「我身上有八万四千毫毛，以一化十，以十化百，百千万亿之变化，皆身外身之法也。」那王子一个个顶礼，即时摆上斋来，就在城楼上吃了。各垛口上都要灯笼旗帜，梆铃锣鼓，支更传箭，放炮呐喊。

早又天明。Soon it was dawn again.老怪即喚黃獅精定計道：「汝等今日用心拿那行者、沙僧；The old demon summoned the Yellow Lion Demon and laid his plan: “Today you must take care to capture the Pilgrim and Shaseng;等我暗自飛空上城，拿他那師父并那老王父子，先轉九曲盤桓洞，待你得勝回報。」黃獅領計，便引猱獅、雪獅、摶象、伏狸，各執兵器到城邊，滾風釀霧的索戰。meanwhile, I shall secretly fly over the city, seize their master and the old king and his sons, and take them first to Nine-Bend Winding Cave, there to await your report of victory.” Yellow Lion accepted the plan and led the Macaque Lion, Snow Lion, Elephant-Grappling Lion, and Raccoon-Subduing Lion, each bearing his weapon, to the city walls, where they churned up wind and brewed fog as they demanded battle.這裡行者與沙僧跳出城頭，厲聲罵道：「賊潑怪！Here the Pilgrim and Shaseng leapt from the city wall and cried sternly, “You vile thieving monsters!快將我師弟八戒送還我，饒你性命；Return our junior brother Bajie at once, and we will spare your lives;不然，都教你粉骨碎屍。」那妖精那容分說，一擁齊來。otherwise, we shall grind every one of your bones to dust!” The demons would hear no argument and surged forward together.這大聖弟兄兩個，各運機謀，擋住五個獅子。Dasheng and his brother each employed his cunning and held off the five lions.這殺比昨日又甚不同：This battle was very different even from yesterday’s:

早又天明。老怪即唤黄狮精定计道：「汝等今日用心拿那行者、沙僧；等我暗自飞空上城，拿他那师父并那老王父子，先转九曲盘桓洞，待你得胜回报。」黄狮领计，便引猱狮、雪狮、抟象、伏狸，各执兵器到城边，滚风酿雾的索战。这里行者与沙僧跳出城头，厉声骂道：「贼泼怪！快将我师弟八戒送还我，饶你性命；不然，都教你粉骨碎尸。」那妖精那容分说，一拥齐来。这大圣弟兄两个，各运机谋，挡住五个狮子。这杀比昨日又甚不同：

這五個雜毛獅子精與行者、沙僧正自殺到好處，那老怪駕著黑雲，徑直騰至城樓上，搖一搖頭，諕得那城上文武大小官員并守城人夫等都滾下城去。While the five motley-furred lion demons were fighting the Pilgrim and Shaseng at the fiercest point of the battle, the old demon rode a black cloud straight up to the city tower and shook his head, so terrifying all the civil and military officials, high and low, and the men guarding the walls that they tumbled down from the city ramparts.被他奔入樓中，張開口，把三藏與老王父子一頓噙出；He rushed into the tower, opened his mouths, and snatched Sanzang, the old king, and his sons out in a single sweep;復至坎宮地下，將八戒也著口噙之。then he returned to the northern quarter below the wall and seized Bajie in another mouth.原來他九個頭就有九張口。For each of his nine heads had a mouth of its own.一口噙著唐僧，一口噙著八戒，一口噙著老王，一口噙著大王子，一口噙著二王子，一口噙著三王子：六口噙著六人，還空了三張口。One mouth held Tang Seng, another Bajie, another the old king, another the eldest prince, another the second prince, and another the third prince: six mouths held six men, leaving three mouths still empty.發聲喊叫道：「我先去也。」這五個小獅精見他祖得勝，一個個愈展雄才。He called aloud, “I shall go on ahead!” When the five lesser lion demons saw that their grandsire had triumphed, each displayed still greater prowess.

这五个杂毛狮子精与行者、沙僧正自杀到好处，那老怪驾著黑云，径直腾至城楼上，摇一摇头，諕得那城上文武大小官员并守城人夫等都滚下城去。被他奔入楼中，张开口，把三藏与老王父子一顿噙出；复至坎宫地下，将八戒也著口噙之。原来他九个头就有九张口。一口噙著唐僧，一口噙著八戒，一口噙著老王，一口噙著大王子，一口噙著二王子，一口噙著三王子：六口噙著六人，还空了三张口。发声喊叫道：「我先去也。」这五个小狮精见他祖得胜，一个个愈展雄才。

行者聞得城上人喊嚷，情知中了他計，急喚沙僧仔細。Hearing the uproar upon the city wall, the Pilgrim knew they had fallen into the old demon’s scheme and urgently warned Shaseng to take care.他卻把臂膊上毫毛盡皆拔下，入口嚼爛噴出，變作千百個小行者，一擁攻上。Then he plucked every hair from his arms, chewed them to a pulp, and spat them out; they became a thousand little Pilgrims, who swarmed forward in a single mass.當時拖倒猱獅，活捉了雪獅，拿住了摶象獅，扛翻了伏狸獅，將黃獅打死，烘烘的嚷到州城之下。They at once dragged down the Macaque Lion, captured the Snow Lion alive, seized the Elephant-Grappling Lion, and overturned the Raccoon-Subduing Lion; then they beat the Yellow Lion to death and raised a tremendous clamor beneath the city walls.倒轉走脫了青臉兒與刁鑽古怪、古怪刁鑽兒三怪。The three monsters Blue-Face, Diaozuan Guguai, and Guguai Diaozuan, however, managed to escape.那城上官看見，卻又開門，將繩把五個獅精又綑了，擡進城去。When the officials on the wall saw this, they opened the gate again, bound the five lion demons with ropes, and carried them into the city.還未發落，只見那王妃哭哭啼啼，對行者禮拜道：「神師啊，我殿下父子並你師父，性命休矣。Before any judgment could be passed, the queen came weeping and bowed to the Pilgrim, saying, “Divine Master, my lord and his sons, as well as your own master, have surely lost their lives.這孤城怎生是好？」大聖收了法毛，對王妃作禮道：「賢后莫愁。What is to become of this orphaned city?” Dasheng recalled his magic hairs and bowed to the queen, saying, “Worthy Queen, do not grieve.只因我拿他七個獅精，那老妖弄攝法，定將我師父與殿下父子攝去，料必無傷。Because I captured his seven lion demons, the old monster used his snatching magic and must have carried off my master and His Highness and his sons; I am sure they have not been harmed.待明日絕早，我兄弟二人去那山中，管情捉住老妖，還你四個王子。」那王妃一簇女眷聞得此言，都對行者下拜道：「願求殿下父子全生，皇圖堅固。」拜畢，一個個含淚還宮。At the first light of tomorrow, my brother and I will go into the mountains; I guarantee we shall capture the old demon and restore your four princes to you.” Hearing this, the queen and all the women gathered around her bowed to the Pilgrim, saying, “We pray that His Highness and his sons may all return alive, and that the royal dominion may stand secure.” When they had finished bowing, they returned to the palace one by one with tears in their eyes.行者吩咐各官：「將打死的黃獅精，剝了皮；The Pilgrim instructed the officials, “Skin the Yellow Lion Demon, whom we killed;六個活獅精，牢牢拴鎖。and keep the six living lion demons securely chained and bound.取些齋飯來，我們吃了睡覺。Bring us some vegetarian food, so that we may eat and sleep.你們都放心，保你無事。」Set your minds at ease; I guarantee that no harm will come to you.”

行者闻得城上人喊嚷，情知中了他计，急唤沙僧仔细。他却把臂膊上毫毛尽皆拔下，入口嚼烂喷出，变作千百个小行者，一拥攻上。当时拖倒猱狮，活捉了雪狮，拿住了抟象狮，扛翻了伏狸狮，将黄狮打死，烘烘的嚷到州城之下。倒转走脱了青脸儿与刁钻古怪、古怪刁钻儿三怪。那城上官看见，却又开门，将绳把五个狮精又捆了，抬进城去。还未发落，只见那王妃哭哭啼啼，对行者礼拜道：「神师啊，我殿下父子并你师父，性命休矣。这孤城怎生是好？」大圣收了法毛，对王妃作礼道：「贤后莫愁。只因我拿他七个狮精，那老妖弄摄法，定将我师父与殿下父子摄去，料必无伤。待明日绝早，我兄弟二人去那山中，管情捉住老妖，还你四个王子。」那王妃一簇女眷闻得此言，都对行者下拜道：「愿求殿下父子全生，皇图坚固。」拜毕，一个个含泪还宫。行者吩咐各官：「将打死的黄狮精，剥了皮；六个活狮精，牢牢拴锁。取些斋饭来，我们吃了睡觉。你们都放心，保你无事。」

至次日，大聖領沙僧駕起祥雲，不多時，到於竹節山頭。The next day, Dasheng took Shaseng with him, mounted an auspicious cloud, and before long reached the summit of Bamboo-Joint Mountain.按雲頭觀看，好座高山。They halted their cloud and looked about them: what a magnificent mountain it was!但見：They saw:

至次日，大圣领沙僧驾起祥云，不多时，到于竹节山头。按云头观看，好座高山。但见：

他兩個正在山頭上看景，忽見那青臉兒手拿一條短棍，徑跑出崖谷之間。As the two of them stood upon the mountaintop viewing the scenery, they suddenly saw Blue-Face, holding a short club, run straight out from between the cliffs and ravines.行者喝道：「那裡走，老孫來也。」諕得那小妖一翻一滾的跑下崖谷。The Pilgrim shouted, “Where are you going? Old Sun is here!” The little demon was so frightened that he went tumbling and scrambling down into the ravine.他兩個一直追來，又不見蹤跡。The two pursued him all the way, but then lost every trace of him.向前又轉幾步，卻是一座洞府，兩扇花斑石門，緊緊關閉。After going a few steps farther and turning a corner, they found a cave dwelling whose two mottled stone doors were tightly shut.門楟上橫嵌著一塊石版，楷鐫了十個大字，乃是「萬靈竹節山，九曲盤桓洞」。A stone tablet was set horizontally above the doorframe, bearing ten large characters neatly carved in regular script: “Bamboo-Joint Mountain of Myriad Spirits, Nine-Bend Winding Cave.”

他两个正在山头上看景，忽见那青脸儿手拿一条短棍，径跑出崖谷之间。行者喝道：「那里走，老孙来也。」諕得那小妖一翻一滚的跑下崖谷。他两个一直追来，又不见踪迹。向前又转几步，却是一座洞府，两扇花斑石门，紧紧关闭。门楟上横嵌著一块石版，楷镌了十个大字，乃是「万灵竹节山，九曲盘桓洞」。

那小妖原來跑進洞去，即把洞門閉了。The little demon had run into the cave and immediately shut the doors.到中間對老妖道：「爺爺，外面又有兩個和尚來了。」老妖道：「你大王並猱獅、雪獅、摶象、伏狸可曾來？」小妖道：「不見，不見。He went inside to the old demon and said, “Grandfather, two more monks have come outside.” The old demon asked, “Have your king and the Macaque Lion, Snow Lion, Elephant-Grappling Lion, and Raccoon-Subduing Lion returned?” The little demon replied, “No, no.只是兩個和尚在山峰高處眺望。There are only two monks looking out from the lofty peak.我看見回頭就跑，他趕將來，我卻閉門來也。」老妖聽說，低頭不語。As soon as I saw them, I turned and ran; they chased me here, but I shut the doors behind me.” Hearing this, the old demon lowered his head and said nothing.半晌，忽的吊下淚來，叫聲：「苦啊！After a long while, tears suddenly fell from his eyes, and he cried, “What misery!我黃獅孫死了，猱獅孫等又盡被和尚捉進城去矣。My grandson Yellow Lion is dead, and my grandsons Macaque Lion and the others have all been captured by the monks and taken into the city.此恨怎生報得？」八戒綑在傍邊，與王父子、唐僧俱攢在一處，恓恓惶惶受苦。How can I ever avenge this hatred?” Bajie was bound nearby, huddled together with Tang Seng, the king, and his sons, all suffering in wretched fear.聽見老妖說聲眾孫被和尚捉進城去，暗暗喜道：「師父莫怕，殿下休愁。When he heard the old demon say that all his grandsons had been captured by the monks and taken into the city, he rejoiced inwardly and said, “Master, do not be afraid; Your Highnesses, do not grieve.我師兄已得勝，捉了眾妖，尋到此間救拔吾等也。」說罷，又聽得老妖叫：「小的們，好生在此看守，等我出去拿那兩個和尚進來，一發懲治。」My elder brother has won the battle and captured all the demons; he has found this place and come to rescue us.” When he had finished, they heard the old demon call, “Little ones, guard this place carefully while I go out and capture those two monks; then I shall punish them all together.”

那小妖原来跑进洞去，即把洞门闭了。到中间对老妖道：「爷爷，外面又有两个和尚来了。」老妖道：「你大王并猱狮、雪狮、抟象、伏狸可曾来？」小妖道：「不见，不见。只是两个和尚在山峰高处眺望。我看见回头就跑，他赶将来，我却闭门来也。」老妖听说，低头不语。半晌，忽的吊下泪来，叫声：「苦啊！我黄狮孙死了，猱狮孙等又尽被和尚捉进城去矣。此恨怎生报得？」八戒捆在傍边，与王父子、唐僧俱攒在一处，恓恓惶惶受苦。听见老妖说声众孙被和尚捉进城去，暗暗喜道：「师父莫怕，殿下休愁。我师兄已得胜，捉了众妖，寻到此间救拔吾等也。」说罢，又听得老妖叫：「小的们，好生在此看守，等我出去拿那两个和尚进来，一发惩治。」

你看他身無披掛，手不拈兵，大踏步走到前邊，只聞得孫行者吆喝哩。Look at him: without armor upon his body or weapon in his hand, he strode boldly to the front, where he could already hear Sun the Pilgrim shouting.他就大開了洞門，不答話，徑奔行者。He flung the cave doors wide and, without a word, charged straight at the Pilgrim.行者使鐵棒，當頭支住。The Pilgrim wielded his iron cudgel and blocked him head-on.沙僧掄寶杖就打。Shaseng swung his precious staff and struck.那老妖把頭搖一搖，左右八個頭，一齊張開口，把行者、沙僧輕輕的又啣於洞內。The old demon shook his head; the eight heads to either side opened their mouths together and effortlessly carried the Pilgrim and Shaseng into the cave between their jaws.教：「取繩索來。」那刁鑽古怪、古怪刁鑽與青臉兒是昨夜逃生而回者，即拿兩條繩，把他二人著實綑了。He ordered, “Bring ropes!” Diaozuan Guguai, Guguai Diaozuan, and Blue-Face, who had escaped with their lives the previous night, immediately brought two ropes and bound the pair fast.老妖問道：「你這潑猴，把我那七個兒孫捉了；The old demon asked, “You wretched monkey, did you not capture seven of my sons and grandsons?我今拿住你和尚四個、王子四個，也足以抵得我兒孫之命。Now I have captured all four of you monks and all four princes, which is more than enough to answer for the lives of my descendants.小的們，選荊條柳棍來，且打這猴頭一頓，與我黃獅孫報報冤仇。」那三個小妖各執柳棍，專打行者。Little ones, select some thorn switches and willow clubs, and first give this monkey a beating to avenge my grandson Yellow Lion.” The three lesser demons each took up a willow club and struck only the Pilgrim.行者本是熬煉過的身體，那些些柳棍兒，只好與他拂癢，他那裡做聲，憑他怎麼捶打，略不介意。The Pilgrim’s body had been tempered and refined; those puny willow clubs could do no more than scratch his itch. He made no sound, and however they pounded him, he paid not the slightest heed.八戒、唐僧與王子見了，一個個毛骨悚然。Bajie, Tang Seng, and the princes watched with every hair standing on end.少時，打折了柳棍。Before long, the willow clubs broke.直打到天晚，也不計其數。They beat him until nightfall, striking more blows than anyone could count.沙僧見打得多了，甚不過意道：「我替他打百十下罷。」老妖道：「你且莫忙，明日就打到你了。Seeing how much the Pilgrim had been beaten, Shaseng could bear it no longer and said, “Let me take a hundred or so blows in his place.” The old demon replied, “Do not be impatient; tomorrow it will be your turn.一個個挨次兒打將來。」八戒著忙道：「後日就打到我老豬也。」打一會，漸漸的天昏了。You shall all be beaten in order.” Bajie anxiously said, “Then the day after tomorrow it will be my turn, Old Zhu’s!” After they had beaten him a while longer, darkness gradually fell.老妖叫：「小的們，且住，點起燈火來，你們吃些飲食，讓我到錦雲窩略睡睡去。The old demon called, “Little ones, stop for now and light the lamps. Eat something yourselves while I go sleep for a while in Brocade-Cloud Nook.汝三人都是遭過害的，卻用心看守，待明早再打。」三個小妖移過燈來，拿柳棍又打行者腦蓋，就像敲梆子一般，剔剔托，托托剔，緊幾下，慢幾下。All three of you have suffered at their hands before, so guard them closely, and we shall beat them again tomorrow morning.” The three little demons brought over a lamp, then took willow clubs and struck the crown of the Pilgrim’s head again, as though beating a watchman’s clapper: tick-tock, tock-tick, several strokes quickly and several slowly.夜將深了，卻都盹睡。As the night deepened, they all began to doze.

你看他身无披挂，手不拈兵，大踏步走到前边，只闻得孙行者吆喝哩。他就大开了洞门，不答话，径奔行者。行者使铁棒，当头支住。沙僧抡宝杖就打。那老妖把头摇一摇，左右八个头，一齐张开口，把行者、沙僧轻轻的又啣于洞内。教：「取绳索来。」那刁钻古怪、古怪刁钻与青脸儿是昨夜逃生而回者，即拿两条绳，把他二人著实捆了。老妖问道：「你这泼猴，把我那七个儿孙捉了；我今拿住你和尚四个、王子四个，也足以抵得我儿孙之命。小的们，选荆条柳棍来，且打这猴头一顿，与我黄狮孙报报冤仇。」那三个小妖各执柳棍，专打行者。行者本是熬炼过的身体，那些些柳棍儿，只好与他拂痒，他那里做声，凭他怎么捶打，略不介意。八戒、唐僧与王子见了，一个个毛骨悚然。少时，打折了柳棍。直打到天晚，也不计其数。沙僧见打得多了，甚不过意道：「我替他打百十下罢。」老妖道：「你且莫忙，明日就打到你了。一个个挨次儿打将来。」八戒著忙道：「后日就打到我老猪也。」打一会，渐渐的天昏了。老妖叫：「小的们，且住，点起灯火来，你们吃些饮食，让我到锦云窝略睡睡去。汝三人都是遭过害的，却用心看守，待明早再打。」三个小妖移过灯来，拿柳棍又打行者脑盖，就像敲梆子一般，剔剔托，托托剔，紧几下，慢几下。夜将深了，却都盹睡。

行者就使個遁法，將身一小，脫出繩來。The Pilgrim then employed an escape art, shrank his body, and slipped free of the ropes.抖一抖毫毛，整束了衣服。He shook out his hairs and straightened his clothes.耳朵內取出棒來，幌一幌，有吊桶粗細，二丈長短，朝著三個小妖道：「你這孽畜，把你老爺就打了許多棍子。Taking the cudgel from his ear, he gave it a shake until it was as thick as a well bucket and some twenty feet long, then said to the three little demons, “You beasts have given your lord a great many blows.老爺還只照舊，老爺也把這棍子略掗你掗，看道如何？」把三個小妖輕輕一掗，就掗做三個肉餅。Your lord is still just as he was, so now let your lord press this cudgel lightly upon you and see how you fare.” He pressed it lightly upon the three little demons and flattened them into three meat cakes.卻又剔亮了燈，解放沙僧。He then trimmed the lamp to make it burn brightly and freed Shaseng.八戒綑急了，忍不住大聲叫道：「哥哥，我的手腳都綑腫了，倒不來先解放我？」這獃子喊了一聲，卻早驚動老妖。Bajie’s bonds were so tight that he could bear them no longer, and he cried aloud, “Brother, my hands and feet are all swollen from these ropes! Why did you not free me first?” The fool’s single shout immediately awakened the old demon.老妖一轂轆爬起來道：「是誰人解放？」那行者聽見，一口吹息燈，也顧不得沙僧等眾，使鐵棒，打破幾重門走了。The old demon sprang up with a roll and cried, “Who has been set free?” Hearing him, the Pilgrim blew out the lamp in a single breath and, with no time to attend to Shaseng or the others, wielded his iron cudgel, smashed through several layers of doors, and escaped.

行者就使个遁法，将身一小，脱出绳来。抖一抖毫毛，整束了衣服。耳朵内取出棒来，幌一幌，有吊桶粗细，二丈长短，朝著三个小妖道：「你这孽畜，把你老爷就打了许多棍子。老爷还只照旧，老爷也把这棍子略挜你挜，看道如何？」把三个小妖轻轻一挜，就挜做三个肉饼。却又剔亮了灯，解放沙僧。八戒捆急了，忍不住大声叫道：「哥哥，我的手脚都捆肿了，倒不来先解放我？」这呆子喊了一声，却早惊动老妖。老妖一毂辘爬起来道：「是谁人解放？」那行者听见，一口吹息灯，也顾不得沙僧等众，使铁棒，打破几重门走了。

那老妖到中堂裡叫：「小的們，怎麼沒了燈光？The old demon came into the central hall and cried, “Little ones, why have the lights gone out?只莫走了人也？」叫一聲，沒人答應；Surely no one has escaped?” He called once, but no one answered;又叫一聲，又沒人答應。he called again, and again no one answered.及取燈火來看時，只見地下血淋淋的三塊肉餅，老王父子及唐僧、八戒俱在，只不見了行者、沙僧。When he finally brought a light and looked, he saw three blood-soaked meat cakes upon the floor. The old king and his sons, Tang Seng, and Bajie were all still there; only the Pilgrim and Shaseng were missing.點著火，前後趕看，只見沙僧還背貼在廊下站哩。He lit torches and searched all around, only to find Shaseng still standing beneath the gallery with his back against the wall.被他一把拿住捽倒，照舊綑了。The old demon seized him, threw him down, and bound him again as before.又找尋行者，但見幾層門盡皆破損，情知是行者打破走了。He searched further for the Pilgrim, but saw that several layers of doors had all been smashed, and knew that the Pilgrim had broken through them and escaped.也不去追趕，將破門補的補，遮的遮，固守家業不題。He made no attempt to pursue him, but had the broken doors patched where they could be patched and covered where they could be covered, and guarded his household securely; of this we speak no more.

那老妖到中堂里叫：「小的们，怎么没了灯光？只莫走了人也？」叫一声，没人答应；又叫一声，又没人答应。及取灯火来看时，只见地下血淋淋的三块肉饼，老王父子及唐僧、八戒俱在，只不见了行者、沙僧。点著火，前后赶看，只见沙僧还背贴在廊下站哩。被他一把拿住捽倒，照旧捆了。又找寻行者，但见几层门尽皆破损，情知是行者打破走了。也不去追赶，将破门补的补，遮的遮，固守家业不题。

卻說孫大聖出了那九曲盤桓洞，跨祥雲，徑轉玉華州。Sun Dasheng, meanwhile, emerged from Nine-Bend Winding Cave, mounted an auspicious cloud, and returned straight to Yuhua Prefecture.但見那城頭上各方的土地、神祗與城隍之神迎空拜接。They saw the local earth gods, tutelary deities, and City Gods from every quarter atop the city walls, bowing to welcome him in midair.行者道：「汝等怎麼今夜才見？」城隍道：「小神等知大聖下降玉華州，因有賢王款留，故不敢見。Xingzhe said, “Why have you only now come to see me tonight?” The City God replied, “We humble gods knew that the Great Sage had descended upon Yuhua Prefecture and, because the worthy prince was entertaining you, dared not present ourselves.今知王等遇怪，大聖降魔，特來叩接。」行者正在嗔怪處，又見金頭揭諦、六甲六丁神將押著一尊土地，跪在面前道：「大聖，吾等捉得這個地裡鬼來也。」行者喝道：「汝等不在竹節山護我師父，卻怎麼嚷到這裡？」丁甲神道：「大聖，那妖精自你逃時，復捉住捲簾大將，依然綑了。Now, learning that the prince and his household have met with monsters and that the Great Sage is subduing them, we have come especially to bow in welcome.” Just as Xingzhe was about to scold them, he saw the Golden-Headed Jiedi and the divine generals of the Six Jia and Six Ding escorting an earth god, who knelt before him and said, “Great Sage, we have caught this local ghost for you.” Xingzhe shouted, “Why are you not guarding my master at Zhujie Mountain? What are you doing making a commotion here?” One of the Jia-Ding gods replied, “Great Sage, after the monster escaped from you, he seized the Curtain-Raising General again and tied him up as before.我等見他法力甚大，卻將竹節山土地押解至此。Seeing that his magic powers were immense, we brought the earth god of Zhujie Mountain here under guard.他知那妖精的根由，乞大聖問他一問，便好處治，以救聖僧、賢王之苦。」行者聽言，甚喜。He knows the monster’s origins. Please question him, Great Sage; then you will know how to deal with the creature and rescue the holy monk and the worthy prince from their suffering.” Xingzhe was delighted to hear this.那土地戰兢兢叩頭道：「那老妖前年下降竹節山。Trembling with fear, the earth god kowtowed and said, “The old monster descended upon Zhujie Mountain the year before last.那九曲盤桓洞原是六獅之窩，那六個獅子自得老妖至此，就都拜為祖翁。The Nine-Bend Coiling Cave was originally the lair of six lions; once the old monster arrived, all six acknowledged him as their grandsire.祖翁乃是個九頭獅子，號為九靈元聖。This grandsire is a nine-headed lion called Jiuling Yuansheng.若得他滅，須去到東極妙巖宮，請他主人公來，方可收伏；To subdue him, you must go to the Miaoyan Palace at the Eastern Pole and invite his master here; only then can he be taken.他人莫想擒也。」行者聞言，思憶半晌道：「東極妙巖宮，是太乙救苦天尊啊，他坐下正是個九頭獅子。No one else should hope to capture him.” Hearing this, Xingzhe pondered for a long while and said, “The Miaoyan Palace at the Eastern Pole belongs to Taiyi Jiuku Tianzun, and his mount is indeed a nine-headed lion.這等說。」便教：「揭諦、金甲，還同土地回去，暗中護祐師父、師弟並州王父子；That explains it.” He then ordered, “Jiedi and Golden-Armored Gods, return with the earth god and secretly protect my master, my fellow disciples, and the prefectural prince and his sons.本處城隍守護城池。」眾神各各遵守去訖。The local City God is to guard the city.” Each of the gods departed to obey his orders.

却说孙大圣出了那九曲盘桓洞，跨祥云，径转玉华州。但见那城头上各方的土地、神祗与城隍之神迎空拜接。行者道：「汝等怎么今夜才见？」城隍道：「小神等知大圣下降玉华州，因有贤王款留，故不敢见。今知王等遇怪，大圣降魔，特来叩接。」行者正在嗔怪处，又见金头揭谛、六甲六丁神将押著一尊土地，跪在面前道：「大圣，吾等捉得这个地里鬼来也。」行者喝道：「汝等不在竹节山护我师父，却怎么嚷到这里？」丁甲神道：「大圣，那妖精自你逃时，复捉住卷帘大将，依然捆了。我等见他法力甚大，却将竹节山土地押解至此。他知那妖精的根由，乞大圣问他一问，便好处治，以救圣僧、贤王之苦。」行者听言，甚喜。那土地战兢兢叩头道：「那老妖前年下降竹节山。那九曲盘桓洞原是六狮之窝，那六个狮子自得老妖至此，就都拜为祖翁。祖翁乃是个九头狮子，号为九灵元圣。若得他灭，须去到东极妙岩宫，请他主人公来，方可收伏；他人莫想擒也。」行者闻言，思忆半晌道：「东极妙岩宫，是太乙救苦天尊啊，他坐下正是个九头狮子。这等说。」便教：「揭谛、金甲，还同土地回去，暗中护祐师父、师弟并州王父子；本处城隍守护城池。」众神各各遵守去讫。

這大聖縱觔斗雲，連夜前行。The Great Sage mounted his somersault cloud and traveled onward through the night.約有寅時，到了東天門外，正撞著廣目天王與天丁、力士一行儀從。At about the hour of the tiger, he reached the Eastern Gate of Heaven, where he happened upon Guangmu Tianwang, accompanied by Heavenly Warriors, Mighty Guardians, and a full ceremonial retinue.眾皆停住，拱手迎道：「大聖何往？」行者對眾禮畢，道：「前去妙巖宮走走。」天王道：「西天路不走，卻又東天來做甚？」行者道：「因到玉華州，蒙州王相款，遣三子拜我等弟兄為師，習學武藝，不期遇著一夥獅怪。They all halted and greeted him with clasped hands, saying, “Where are you going, Great Sage?” After returning their courtesies, Xingzhe said, “I am off to pay a visit to the Miaoyan Palace.” The Heavenly King said, “Instead of traveling west, what brings you back to the eastern heavens?” Xingzhe replied, “When we reached Yuhua Prefecture, the prefectural prince graciously entertained us and had his three sons take my brothers and me as masters to learn the martial arts. Unexpectedly, we encountered a band of lion monsters.今訪得妙巖宮太乙救苦天尊乃怪之主人公，欲請他來降怪救師。」天王道：「那廂因你欲為人師，所以惹出這一窩獅子來也。」行者笑道：「正為此，正為此。」眾天丁、力士一個個拱手，讓道而行。I have now discovered that Taiyi Jiuku Tianzun of the Miaoyan Palace is the monster’s master, so I mean to ask him to come subdue the monster and rescue my master.” The Heavenly King said, “It was because you wished to become teachers that you stirred up this whole den of lions.” Xingzhe laughed and said, “Just so, just so.” The Heavenly Warriors and Mighty Guardians clasped their hands one after another and stood aside to let him pass.大聖進了東天門，不多時，到妙巖宮前。The Great Sage entered the Eastern Gate of Heaven and before long arrived at the Miaoyan Palace.但見：There he saw:

这大圣纵觔斗云，连夜前行。约有寅时，到了东天门外，正撞著广目天王与天丁、力士一行仪从。众皆停住，拱手迎道：「大圣何往？」行者对众礼毕，道：「前去妙岩宫走走。」天王道：「西天路不走，却又东天来做甚？」行者道：「因到玉华州，蒙州王相款，遣三子拜我等弟兄为师，习学武艺，不期遇著一伙狮怪。今访得妙岩宫太乙救苦天尊乃怪之主人公，欲请他来降怪救师。」天王道：「那厢因你欲为人师，所以惹出这一窝狮子来也。」行者笑道：「正为此，正为此。」众天丁、力士一个个拱手，让道而行。大圣进了东天门，不多时，到妙岩宫前。但见：

那宮門立著一個穿霓帔的仙童，忽見孫大聖，即入宮報道：「爺爺，外面是鬧天宮的齊天大聖來了。」太乙救苦天尊聽得，即喚侍衛眾仙迎接。At the palace gate stood an immortal boy dressed in a rainbow cape. The moment he saw Sun Dasheng, he went inside to report, “Grand Master, the Qitian Dasheng who once caused havoc in Heaven is outside.” On hearing this, Taiyi Jiuku Tianzun immediately summoned his attendant immortals to welcome him.迎至宮中，只見天尊高坐九色蓮花座上，百億瑞光之中。They escorted him into the palace, where Tianzun sat aloft upon a nine-colored lotus throne amid countless rays of auspicious light.見了行者，下座來相見。When he saw Xingzhe, he descended from his throne to greet him.行者朝上施禮。Xingzhe bowed before him.天尊答禮道：「大聖，這幾年不見，前聞得你棄道歸佛，保唐僧西天取經，想是功行完了？」行者道：「功行未完，卻也將近。Returning the courtesy, Tianzun said, “Great Sage, we have not met for several years. I heard that you abandoned Daoism and entered the Buddhist fold, protecting the Tang monk on his journey west to fetch the scriptures. I suppose your meritorious quest is complete?” Xingzhe replied, “It is not yet complete, though we are drawing near.但如今因保唐僧到玉華州，蒙王子遣三子拜老孫等為師，習學武藝，把我們三件神兵照樣打造，不期夜間被賊偷去。But while escorting the Tang monk through Yuhua Prefecture, the prince had his three sons take Old Sun and his companions as masters to learn the martial arts. They had copies made of our three divine weapons, but unexpectedly thieves stole them in the night.及天明尋找，原是城北豹頭山虎口洞一個金毛獅子成精盜去。When we searched for them at daybreak, we found that they had been stolen by a golden-maned lion spirit from Tiger-Mouth Cave on Leopard-Head Mountain north of the city.老孫用計取出，那精就夥了若干獅精與老孫大鬧。Old Sun recovered them by a stratagem, whereupon that spirit gathered a number of other lion spirits and fought a great battle with me.內有一個九頭獅子，神通廣大，將我師父與八戒並王父子四人都啣去，到一竹節山九曲盤桓洞。Among them was a nine-headed lion of immense supernatural power, who carried off my master, Bajie, and the prince and his three sons in his jaws to Nine-Bend Coiling Cave on Zhujie Mountain.次日，老孫與沙僧跟尋，亦被啣去。The next day, when Old Sun and Shaseng followed their trail, we too were seized in his jaws.老孫被他綑打無數，幸而弄法走了。Old Sun was bound and beaten countless times, but fortunately managed to escape by magic.他們正在彼處受罪。The others are still suffering there.問及當坊土地，始知天尊是他主人，特來奉請收降解救。」Only after questioning the local earth god did I learn that Tianzun is the creature’s master, so I have come especially to request that you subdue him and rescue them.”

那宫门立著一个穿霓帔的仙童，忽见孙大圣，即入宫报道：「爷爷，外面是闹天宫的齐天大圣来了。」太乙救苦天尊听得，即唤侍卫众仙迎接。迎至宫中，只见天尊高坐九色莲花座上，百亿瑞光之中。见了行者，下座来相见。行者朝上施礼。天尊答礼道：「大圣，这几年不见，前闻得你弃道归佛，保唐僧西天取经，想是功行完了？」行者道：「功行未完，却也将近。但如今因保唐僧到玉华州，蒙王子遣三子拜老孙等为师，习学武艺，把我们三件神兵照样打造，不期夜间被贼偷去。及天明寻找，原是城北豹头山虎口洞一个金毛狮子成精盗去。老孙用计取出，那精就伙了若干狮精与老孙大闹。内有一个九头狮子，神通广大，将我师父与八戒并王父子四人都啣去，到一竹节山九曲盘桓洞。次日，老孙与沙僧跟寻，亦被啣去。老孙被他捆打无数，幸而弄法走了。他们正在彼处受罪。问及当坊土地，始知天尊是他主人，特来奉请收降解救。」

天尊聞言，即令仙將到獅子房喚出獅奴來問。On hearing this, Tianzun immediately ordered his immortal generals to go to the lion house, summon the lion keeper, and question him.那獅奴熟睡，被眾將推搖方醒，揪至中廳來見。The lion keeper was fast asleep and woke only after the generals shoved and shook him; they seized him and dragged him to the central hall.天尊問道：「獅獸何在？」那奴兒垂淚叩頭，只教：「饒命，饒命。」天尊道：「孫大聖在此，且不打你。Tianzun asked, “Where is the lion beast?” The servant kowtowed tearfully, crying only, “Spare my life! Spare my life!” Tianzun said, “Sun Dasheng is here, but I shall not beat you yet.你快說為何不謹，走了九頭獅子。」獅奴道：「爺爺，我前日在大千甘露殿中見一瓶酒，不知偷去吃了，不覺沉醉睡著，失於拴鎖，是以走了。」天尊道：「那酒是太上老君送的，喚做輪迴瓊液，你吃了該醉三日不醒。Tell me at once how you came to be so careless that the nine-headed lion escaped.” The lion keeper replied, “Grand Master, the day before yesterday I saw a jar of wine in the Great-Thousand Sweet-Dew Hall. Without knowing what it was, I stole some and drank it, became hopelessly drunk, and fell asleep. I failed to secure the beast, and so it escaped.” Tianzun said, “That wine was a gift from Taishang Laojun and is called the Jade Liquor of Transmigration. After drinking it, you were bound to remain drunk and unconscious for three days.那獅獸今走幾日了？」大聖道：「據土地說，他前年下降，到今二三年矣。」天尊笑道：「是了，是了，天宮裡一日，在凡世就是一年。」叫獅奴道：「你且起來，饒你死罪，跟我與大聖下方去收他來。How many days has the lion beast been gone now?” The Great Sage said, “According to the earth god, he descended there the year before last, so it has been two or three years.” Tianzun laughed and said, “That is it, that is it! One day in the heavenly palace is a year in the mortal world.” He told the lion keeper, “Get up. I spare you the death penalty. Come down to the mortal world with the Great Sage and me to recapture him.汝眾仙都回去，不用跟隨。」All you other immortals may return; there is no need to follow.”

天尊遂與大聖、獅奴，踏雲徑至竹節山。Tianzun, the Great Sage, and the lion keeper then mounted the clouds and went straight to Zhujie Mountain.只見那五方揭諦、六丁六甲、本山土地都來跪接。There the Jiedi of the Five Directions, the Six Ding and Six Jia, and the earth god of the mountain all came forward and knelt to receive them.行者道：「汝等護祐，可曾傷著我師？」眾神道：「妖精著了惱睡了，更不曾動甚刑罰。」天尊道：「我那元聖兒也是一個久修得道的真靈：他喊一聲，上通三聖，下徹九泉，等閑也便不傷生。Xingzhe asked, “While protecting them, did you let my master come to any harm?” The gods replied, “The monster became vexed and went to sleep; he has inflicted no further punishment.” Tianzun said, “That Yuansheng of mine is also a true spirit who cultivated the Way for many years. One roar from him reaches the Three Sages above and penetrates the Nine Springs below, but ordinarily he does not harm living creatures.孫大聖，你去他門首索戰，引他出來，我好收之。」Sun Dasheng, go challenge him at his gate and lure him out, so that I may take him.”

天尊遂与大圣、狮奴，踏云径至竹节山。只见那五方揭谛、六丁六甲、本山土地都来跪接。行者道：「汝等护祐，可曾伤著我师？」众神道：「妖精著了恼睡了，更不曾动甚刑罚。」天尊道：「我那元圣儿也是一个久修得道的真灵：他喊一声，上通三圣，下彻九泉，等闲也便不伤生。孙大圣，你去他门首索战，引他出来，我好收之。」

行者聽言，果掣棒跳近洞口，高罵道：「潑妖精，還我人來也。At these words, Xingzhe drew his staff and leaped toward the cave entrance, shouting abuse: “You wretched monster, give me back my people!潑妖精，還我人來也。」連叫了數聲，那老妖睡著了，無人答應。You wretched monster, give me back my people!” He shouted several times, but the old monster was asleep and no one answered.行者性急起來，掄鐵棒，往內打進，口中不住的喊罵。Growing impatient, Xingzhe swung his iron staff and fought his way inside, shouting and cursing without pause.那老妖方才驚醒，心中大怒，爬起來，喝一聲：「趕戰。」搖搖頭，便張口來啣。Only then did the old monster wake with a start. Furious, he sprang up and shouted, “After him!” Shaking his heads, he opened his mouth to seize Xingzhe in his jaws.行者回頭跳出。Xingzhe turned and leaped outside.妖精趕到外邊，罵道：「賊猴，那裡走？」行者立在高崖上笑道：「你還敢這等大膽無禮，你死活也不知哩，這不是你老爺主公在此？」那妖精趕到崖前，早被天尊念聲咒語，喝道：「元聖兒，我來了。」那妖認得是主人，不敢展掙，四隻腳伏之於地，只是磕頭。The monster pursued him out, cursing, “Thieving monkey, where do you think you are going?” Standing atop a high cliff, Xingzhe laughed and said, “You still dare to be so insolent and unruly! You do not even know whether you will live or die. Is that not your lord and master standing there?” As the monster reached the foot of the cliff, Tianzun recited an incantation and called, “Yuansheng, my child, I have come.” Recognizing his master, the monster dared not resist; he lowered all four feet to the ground and did nothing but kowtow.傍邊跑過獅奴兒，一把撾住項毛，用拳著項上打夠百十，口裡罵道：「你這畜生，如何偷走，教我受罪？」那獅獸合口無言，不敢搖動。The lion keeper ran over, grabbed him by the mane, and struck him a good hundred blows on the neck with his fist, cursing, “You beast! How dare you run away and make me suffer?” The lion beast kept his mouth shut, said nothing, and dared not move.獅奴兒打得手困，方才住了，即將錦韂安在他身上。Only when the lion keeper’s hand grew weary from beating him did he stop, after which he placed a brocade saddlecloth upon the beast.天尊騎了，喝聲教走。Tianzun mounted him and shouted for him to go.他就縱身駕起彩雲，徑轉妙巖宮去。The beast sprang up, mounted an auspicious cloud, and returned straight to the Miaoyan Palace.

行者听言，果掣棒跳近洞口，高骂道：「泼妖精，还我人来也。泼妖精，还我人来也。」连叫了数声，那老妖睡著了，无人答应。行者性急起来，抡铁棒，往内打进，口中不住的喊骂。那老妖方才惊醒，心中大怒，爬起来，喝一声：「赶战。」摇摇头，便张口来啣。行者回头跳出。妖精赶到外边，骂道：「贼猴，那里走？」行者立在高崖上笑道：「你还敢这等大胆无礼，你死活也不知哩，这不是你老爷主公在此？」那妖精赶到崖前，早被天尊念声咒语，喝道：「元圣儿，我来了。」那妖认得是主人，不敢展挣，四只脚伏之于地，只是磕头。傍边跑过狮奴儿，一把挝住项毛，用拳著项上打够百十，口里骂道：「你这畜生，如何偷走，教我受罪？」那狮兽合口无言，不敢摇动。狮奴儿打得手困，方才住了，即将锦韂安在他身上。天尊骑了，喝声教走。他就纵身驾起彩云，径转妙岩宫去。

大聖望空稱謝了，卻入洞中，先解玉華王，次解唐三藏，次又解了八戒、沙僧並三王子。The Great Sage raised his eyes to the sky and voiced his thanks, then entered the cave. He first untied the Prince of Yuhua, next Tang Sanzang, and then Bajie, Shaseng, and the three young princes.共搜他洞裡物件，逍逍停停，將眾領出門外。Together they searched through everything in the cave, then leisurely led the whole party outside.八戒就取了若干枯柴，前後堆上，放起火來，把一個九曲盤桓洞，燒做個烏焦破瓦窰。Bajie gathered a great quantity of dry wood, piled it before and behind the cave, and set it alight, burning the Nine-Bend Coiling Cave into a charred and ruined brick kiln.大聖又發放了眾神，還教土地在此鎮守。The Great Sage then dismissed the assembled gods, instructing the earth god to remain there and keep watch.卻令八戒、沙僧各各使法，把王父子背馱回州。He ordered Bajie and Shaseng each to use their magic to carry the prince and his sons back to the prefectural city on their backs.他攙著唐僧。He himself supported Tang Seng.不多時，到了州城，天色漸晚，當有妃后、官員都來接見了。Before long they reached the prefectural city. Dusk was falling, and the consorts, queens, and officials all came out to welcome them.擺上齋筵，共坐享之。A vegetarian banquet was laid, and they sat down together to enjoy it.長老師徒還在暴紗亭安歇。The elder and his disciples again rested in the Baosha Pavilion.王子們入宮各寢。The princes entered the palace and retired separately to sleep.一宵無話。Nothing further occurred that night.

次日，王又傳旨，大開素宴。The next day, the prince again issued an order for a grand vegetarian feast.合府大小官員，一一謝恩。Every official in the prefectural government, high and low, came one by one to offer thanks.行者又叫屠子來，把那六個活獅子殺了，共那黃獅子都剝了皮，將肉安排將來受用。Xingzhe also summoned the butchers, had the six living lions killed, and ordered them and the yellow lion skinned and their meat prepared for eating.殿下十分歡喜，即命殺了：把一個留在本府內外人用；His Highness was greatly delighted and immediately ordered the animals slaughtered: one was kept for the people within and outside the prefectural residence to eat;一個與王府長史等官分用；one was divided among the chief secretary and other officials of the princely residence;把五個都剁做一二兩重的塊子，差校尉散給州城內外軍民人等，各吃些須：一則嘗嘗滋味，二則押押驚恐。the remaining five were chopped into pieces weighing one or two liang apiece, and commandants were sent to distribute them among the soldiers and common people within and outside the city, so that all might eat a little—first, to taste the flavor, and second, to settle their fright.那些家家戶戶，無不瞻仰。Every household, without exception, looked on in reverent admiration.

次日，王又传旨，大开素宴。合府大小官员，一一谢恩。行者又叫屠子来，把那六个活狮子杀了，共那黄狮子都剥了皮，将肉安排将来受用。殿下十分欢喜，即命杀了：把一个留在本府内外人用；一个与王府长史等官分用；把五个都剁做一二两重的块子，差校尉散给州城内外军民人等，各吃些须：一则尝尝滋味，二则押押惊恐。那些家家户户，无不瞻仰。

又見那鐵匠人等造成了三般兵器，對行者磕頭道：「爺爺，小的們工都完了。」問道：「各重多少斤兩？」鐵匠道：「金箍棒有千斤，九齒鈀與降妖杖各有八百斤。」行者道：「也罷。」叫請三位王子出來，各人執兵器。Then the blacksmiths came with the three finished weapons and kowtowed to Xingzhe, saying, “Grandfather, we humble craftsmen have completed our work.” He asked, “How much does each one weigh?” The blacksmiths replied, “The gold-banded staff weighs one thousand jin, while the nine-pronged rake and the monster-subduing staff each weigh eight hundred jin.” Xingzhe said, “That will do.” He had the three princes summoned, and each took up his weapon.三子對老王道：「父王，今日兵器完矣。」老王道：「為此兵器，幾乎傷了我父子之命。」小王子道：「幸蒙神師施法，救出我等，卻又掃蕩妖邪，除了後患。The three sons said to the old prince, “Royal Father, today our weapons are finished.” The old prince said, “Because of these weapons, we father and sons very nearly lost our lives.” The youngest prince said, “Fortunately, our divine masters used their magic to rescue us, and then swept away the evil monsters, removing all future danger.誠所謂海晏河清，太平之世界也。」當時老王父子賞勞了匠作，又至暴紗亭拜謝了師恩。It is truly what is meant by calm seas and clear rivers—a world of peace.” The old prince and his sons then rewarded the craftsmen for their labor and went to the Baosha Pavilion to bow in gratitude for their masters’ instruction.

又见那铁匠人等造成了三般兵器，对行者磕头道：「爷爷，小的们工都完了。」问道：「各重多少斤两？」铁匠道：「金箍棒有千斤，九齿钯与降妖杖各有八百斤。」行者道：「也罢。」叫请三位王子出来，各人执兵器。三子对老王道：「父王，今日兵器完矣。」老王道：「为此兵器，几乎伤了我父子之命。」小王子道：「幸蒙神师施法，救出我等，却又扫荡妖邪，除了后患。诚所谓海晏河清，太平之世界也。」当时老王父子赏劳了匠作，又至暴纱亭拜谢了师恩。

三藏又教大聖等快傳武藝，莫誤行程。Sanzang again urged the Great Sage and the others to teach them the martial arts quickly, so as not to delay the journey.他三人就各掄兵器，在王府院中，一一傳授。The three disciples each took up his weapon and instructed the princes one by one in the courtyard of the princely residence.不數日，那三個王子盡皆操演精熟，其餘攻退之方，緊慢之法，各有七十二道解數，無不知之。Within a few days, all three princes had mastered their exercises. They knew every method of attack and retreat, every technique of speed and deliberation, and all seventy-two variations without exception.一則那諸王子心堅，二則虧孫大聖先授了神力，此所以那千斤之棒，八百斤之鈀、杖，俱能舉能運；This was because, first, the princes were resolute in purpose, and second, Sun Dasheng had earlier bestowed divine strength upon them; thus they could all lift and wield the thousand-jin staff and the eight-hundred-jin rake and cudgel.較之初時自家弄的武藝，真天淵也。Compared with the martial skills they had practiced at first, the difference was truly as great as that between heaven and the abyss.有詩為證。A poem bears witness to this.詩曰：The poem says:

三藏又教大圣等快传武艺，莫误行程。他三人就各抡兵器，在王府院中，一一传授。不数日，那三个王子尽皆操演精熟，其余攻退之方，紧慢之法，各有七十二道解数，无不知之。一则那诸王子心坚，二则亏孙大圣先授了神力，此所以那千斤之棒，八百斤之钯、杖，俱能举能运；较之初时自家弄的武艺，真天渊也。有诗为证。诗曰：

那王子又大開筵宴，謝了師教。The princes once again held a grand banquet to thank their masters for their instruction.又取出一大盤金銀，用答微情。They also brought out a great tray of gold and silver as a small token of gratitude.行者笑道：「快拿進去，快拿進去。Xingzhe laughed and said, “Take it back at once, take it back at once!我們出家人，要他何用？」八戒在傍道：「金銀實不敢受，奈何我這件衣服被那些獅子精扯拉破了，但與我們換件衣服，足為愛也。」那王子隨命針工，照依色樣，取青錦、紅錦、茶褐錦各數疋，與三位各做了一件。What use have we renunciants for such things?” Bajie said from beside him, “We truly dare not accept gold or silver, but these lion spirits tore my robe to pieces. If you would only replace our clothes, that would be kindness enough.” The princes immediately summoned the tailors and, following the original colors and styles, provided several bolts each of blue brocade, red brocade, and tea-brown brocade, from which a robe was made for each of the three disciples.三人欣然領受，各穿了錦布直裰，收拾了行裝起程。The three accepted them gladly, put on their straight brocade robes, packed their luggage, and prepared to depart.只見那城裡城外，若大若小，無一人不稱是羅漢臨凡，活佛下界。Within and outside the city, young and old alike proclaimed them arhats descended to the mortal world and living Buddhas come down to earth.鼓樂之聲，旌旗之色，盈街塞道。The sound of drums and music and the color of banners and flags filled the streets and blocked the roads.正是家家戶外焚香火，處處門前獻彩燈。Indeed, every household burned incense outside its gate, and colored lanterns were offered before every door.來至許遠方回，他四眾方得離城西去。The people escorted them a great distance before turning back, and only then could the four pilgrims leave the city and continue westward.這一去頓脫群獅，潛心正果。With this departure they were wholly freed from the pride of lions and devoted their hearts to the true fruition.正是：Indeed:
