卻說孫大聖挾同二弟滾著風，駕著雲，向東北艮地上，頃刻至青龍山玄英洞口，按落雲頭，八戒就欲築門。Now Sun Dasheng, taking his two junior brothers with him, whirled along on the wind and rode the clouds northeastward; in a moment they reached the entrance to Xuanying Cave on Qinglong Mountain, where they lowered their clouds, and Bajie at once made ready to smash down the gate with his rake.行者道：「且消停，待我進去看看師父生死如何，再好與他爭持。」沙僧道：「這門閉緊，如何得進？」行者道：「我自有法力。」Xingzhe said, “Hold a moment. Let me go in first and see whether Master is alive or dead; then we can better settle matters with them.” Shaseng said, “The gate is tightly shut. How can you get in?” Xingzhe said, “I have my own magic.”

却说孙大圣挟同二弟滚著风，驾著云，向东北艮地上，顷刻至青龙山玄英洞口，按落云头，八戒就欲筑门。行者道：「且消停，待我进去看看师父生死如何，再好与他争持。」沙僧道：「这门闭紧，如何得进？」行者道：「我自有法力。」

好大聖，收了棒，捻著訣，念聲咒語，叫：「變！」即變做個火焰蟲兒，真個也疾伶。The splendid Dasheng put away his staff, formed a spell-sign with his fingers, recited an incantation, and cried, “Change!” At once he changed into a firefly, nimble indeed.你看他：Just look at him:

好大圣，收了棒，捻著诀，念声咒语，叫：「变！」即变做个火焰虫儿，真个也疾伶。你看他：

他自飛入，只見幾隻牛橫敧直倒，一個個呼吼如雷，盡皆睡熟了。He flew inside and saw several ox-demons sprawled every which way, each snoring like thunder, all fast asleep.至中廳裡面，全無消息。He reached the central hall, but found no sign of anyone.四下門戶通關，不知那三個妖精睡在何處。Doors and passages opened in all directions, and he could not tell where the three demons slept.才轉過廳房，向後又照，只聞得啼泣之聲，乃是唐僧鎖在後房簷柱上哭哩。Only after passing around the hall and shining his light toward the rear did he hear weeping: Tang Seng was chained to a pillar beneath the eaves of a back room, crying.行者暗暗聽他哭甚，只見他哭道：Xingzhe secretly listened to hear what he was crying about, and heard him lament:

他自飞入，只见几只牛横敧直倒，一个个呼吼如雷，尽皆睡熟了。至中厅里面，全无消息。四下门户通关，不知那三个妖精睡在何处。才转过厅房，向后又照，只闻得啼泣之声，乃是唐僧锁在后房簷柱上哭哩。行者暗暗听他哭甚，只见他哭道：

行者聞言，滿心歡喜，展開翅，飛近師前。Hearing this, Xingzhe was overjoyed; spreading his wings, he flew close to his master.唐僧揩淚道：「呀！Tang Seng wiped away his tears and said, “Ah!西方景象不同，此時正月，蟄蟲始振，為何就有螢飛？」行者忍不住，叫聲：「師父，我來了。」唐僧喜道：「悟空，我說正月間怎得螢火？Things are different here in the Western Regions: it is now the first month, when hibernating insects are only beginning to stir, so why is there already a firefly?” Unable to contain himself, Xingzhe called, “Master, I am here!” Tang Seng said delightedly, “Wukong, I was wondering how there could be a firefly in the first month.原來是你。」行者即現了本相道：「師父啊，為你不識真假，誤了多少路程，費了多少心力。So it was you.” Xingzhe at once resumed his true form and said, “Master, because you could not tell true from false, how much of our journey has been delayed, and how much effort has been wasted!我一行說不是好人，你就下拜，卻被這怪侮暗燈光，盜取酥合香油，連你都攝將來了。The moment I said they were no good, you bowed to them; but those monsters dimmed the lamplight by trickery, stole the fragrant butter-oil, and swept you away with it.我當吩咐八戒、沙僧回寺看守，我即聞風追至此間，不識地名。I first told Bajie and Shaseng to return to the monastery and guard our belongings, while I followed the wind here, though I did not know the name of the place.幸遇四值功曹傳報，說此山名青龍山玄英洞。Fortunately, the Four Duty Gods brought word that this was Xuanying Cave on Qinglong Mountain.我日間與此怪鬥至天晚方回，與師弟輩細道此情，卻就不曾睡，同他兩個來此。I fought the monsters through the day and returned only at nightfall. After explaining everything to my junior brothers, I did not sleep, but came here with the two of them.我恐夜深不便交戰，又不知師父下落，所以變化進來，打聽打聽。」唐僧喜道：「八戒、沙僧如今在外邊哩？」行者道：「在外邊。I feared it would be inconvenient to fight in the depth of night, and I did not know where you were, so I transformed myself and came in to investigate.” Tang Seng said gladly, “Are Bajie and Shaseng outside now?” Xingzhe said, “They are outside.方才老孫看時，妖精都睡著。Just now, when I looked, all the demons were asleep.我且解了鎖，搠開門，帶你出去罷。」唐僧點頭稱謝。Let me undo your lock, force open the gate, and take you out.” Tang Seng nodded and thanked him.

行者闻言，满心欢喜，展开翅，飞近师前。唐僧揩泪道：「呀！西方景象不同，此时正月，蛰虫始振，为何就有萤飞？」行者忍不住，叫声：「师父，我来了。」唐僧喜道：「悟空，我说正月间怎得萤火？原来是你。」行者即现了本相道：「师父啊，为你不识真假，误了多少路程，费了多少心力。我一行说不是好人，你就下拜，却被这怪侮暗灯光，盗取酥合香油，连你都摄将来了。我当吩咐八戒、沙僧回寺看守，我即闻风追至此间，不识地名。幸遇四值功曹传报，说此山名青龙山玄英洞。我日间与此怪斗至天晚方回，与师弟辈细道此情，却就不曾睡，同他两个来此。我恐夜深不便交战，又不知师父下落，所以变化进来，打听打听。」唐僧喜道：「八戒、沙僧如今在外边哩？」行者道：「在外边。方才老孙看时，妖精都睡著。我且解了锁，搠开门，带你出去罢。」唐僧点头称谢。

行者使個解鎖法，用手一抹，那鎖早自開了。Xingzhe employed a lock-opening spell and merely brushed it with his hand; the lock sprang open at once.領著師父往前正走，忽聽得妖王在中廳內房裡叫道：「小的們，緊閉門戶，小心火燭。He was leading his master forward when suddenly they heard a demon king call from an inner room off the central hall, “Underlings, bar every door and take care with the lamps and candles!這會怎麼不叫更巡邏，梆鈴都不響了？」原來那夥小妖征戰一日，俱辛辛苦苦睡著，聽見叫喚，卻才醒了，梆鈴響處，有幾個執器械的敲著鑼，從後而走，可可的撞著他師徒兩個。Why has no one called the watch or made the rounds? The clappers and bells have all fallen silent!” The lesser demons, exhausted after a full day’s fighting, had all fallen sound asleep. Only when they heard the call did they wake; whereupon clappers and bells sounded, and several of them, carrying weapons and beating a gong, came from the rear and ran straight into master and disciple.眾小妖一齊喊道：「好和尚啊，扭開鎖往那裡去？」行者不容分說，掣出棒幌一幌，碗來粗細，就打，棒起處，打死兩個。The lesser demons all shouted, “A fine monk you are! Where do you think you are going after wrenching open the lock?” Without wasting words, Xingzhe drew out his staff and shook it until it was as thick as a bowl; then he struck, killing two with the first sweep.其餘的丟了器械，近中廳，打著門叫：「大王，不好了，不好了，毛臉和尚在家裡打殺人了。」那三怪聽見，一轂轆爬將起來，只教「拿住，拿住。」諕得個唐僧手軟腳軟。The rest dropped their weapons, ran to the central hall, and pounded on the door, crying, “Great Kings, disaster! Disaster! The hairy-faced monk is killing people inside our own home!” Hearing this, the three monsters tumbled out of bed and shouted, “Seize him! Seize him!” Tang Seng was so frightened that his hands and feet went limp.行者也不顧師父，一路棒，滾向前來。Xingzhe paid no heed to his master, but swept forward all the way with his staff.眾小妖遮架不住，被他放倒三兩個，推倒兩三個。The lesser demons could not withstand him: he felled several and knocked several more sprawling.打開幾層門，徑自出來，叫道：「兄弟們何在？」八戒、沙僧正舉著鈀、杖等待，道：「哥哥，如何了？」行者將變化入裡解放師父，正走，被妖驚覺，顧不得師父，打出來的事，講說一遍不題。After smashing through several gates, he came straight outside and shouted, “Brothers, where are you?” Bajie and Shaseng stood waiting with rake and staff raised and asked, “Elder Brother, how did it go?” Xingzhe then related how he had transformed himself and gone inside, freed Master, been discovered by the demons as they were leaving, and, unable to look after Master, had fought his way out.

行者使个解锁法，用手一抹，那锁早自开了。领著师父往前正走，忽听得妖王在中厅内房里叫道：「小的们，紧闭门户，小心火烛。这会怎么不叫更巡逻，梆铃都不响了？」原来那伙小妖征战一日，俱辛辛苦苦睡著，听见叫唤，却才醒了，梆铃响处，有几个执器械的敲著锣，从后而走，可可的撞著他师徒两个。众小妖一齐喊道：「好和尚啊，扭开锁往那里去？」行者不容分说，掣出棒幌一幌，碗来粗细，就打，棒起处，打死两个。其余的丢了器械，近中厅，打著门叫：「大王，不好了，不好了，毛脸和尚在家里打杀人了。」那三怪听见，一毂辘爬将起来，只教「拿住，拿住。」諕得个唐僧手软脚软。行者也不顾师父，一路棒，滚向前来。众小妖遮架不住，被他放倒三两个，推倒两三个。打开几层门，径自出来，叫道：「兄弟们何在？」八戒、沙僧正举著钯、杖等待，道：「哥哥，如何了？」行者将变化入里解放师父，正走，被妖惊觉，顾不得师父，打出来的事，讲说一遍不题。

那妖王把唐僧捉住，依然使鐵索鎖了。The demon kings seized Tang Seng and chained him up again with the iron chain.執著刀，掄著斧，燈火齊明，問道：「你這廝怎樣開鎖？Holding a sword and brandishing an axe, with all the lamps brightly lit, they demanded, “How did you open the lock?那猴子如何得進？How did that monkey get inside?快早供來，饒你之命；Confess at once, and we will spare your life;不然，就一刀兩段。」慌得那唐僧戰戰兢兢的跪道：「大王爺爺，我徒弟孫悟空，他會七十二般變化。otherwise, we shall cut you in two with one stroke.” Tang Seng, terrified, knelt trembling and said, “Great Kings, grandfathers, my disciple Sun Wukong knows the seventy-two transformations.才變個火焰蟲兒，飛進來救我。Just now he changed into a firefly and flew in to rescue me.不期大王知覺，被小大王等撞見。But unexpectedly Your Majesties became aware of him, and the young lords and the others ran into us.是我徒弟不知好歹，打傷兩個，眾皆喊叫，舉兵著火，他遂顧不得我，走出去了。」三個妖王呵呵大笑道：「早是驚覺，未曾走了。」叫小的們把前後門緊緊關閉，亦不諠譁。My disciple, not knowing what was good for him, wounded two of them. Everyone shouted, raised weapons, and brought lights, so he could no longer attend to me and fled outside.” The three demon kings roared with laughter and said, “Luckily we noticed in time, before he escaped with you.” They ordered the lesser demons to fasten the front and rear gates tightly and make no noise.

那妖王把唐僧捉住，依然使铁索锁了。执著刀，抡著斧，灯火齐明，问道：「你这厮怎样开锁？那猴子如何得进？快早供来，饶你之命；不然，就一刀两段。」慌得那唐僧战战兢兢的跪道：「大王爷爷，我徒弟孙悟空，他会七十二般变化。才变个火焰虫儿，飞进来救我。不期大王知觉，被小大王等撞见。是我徒弟不知好歹，打伤两个，众皆喊叫，举兵著火，他遂顾不得我，走出去了。」三个妖王呵呵大笑道：「早是惊觉，未曾走了。」叫小的们把前后门紧紧关闭，亦不諠哗。

沙僧道：「閉門不諠譁，想是暗弄我師父。Shaseng said, “They have shut the gates and fallen silent. They must be secretly doing something to Master.我們動手耶。」行者道：「說的是，快早打門。」那獃子賣弄神通，舉鈀盡力築去，把那石門築得粉碎，卻又厲聲喊罵道：「偷油的賊怪！Let us strike.” Xingzhe said, “Quite right. Smash down the gate at once.” That Idiot, eager to display his powers, raised his rake and brought it down with all his strength, shattering the stone gate to pieces; then he bellowed abuse: “You oil-stealing demon thieves!快送吾師出來也。」諕得那門內小妖滾將進去，報道：「大王，不好了，不好了，前門被和尚打破了。」三個妖王十分煩惱道：「這廝著實無禮。」即命取披掛結束了，各持兵器，帥小妖出門迎敵。Send our master out at once!” The lesser demons inside were so frightened that they tumbled back to report, “Great Kings, disaster! Disaster! The monks have smashed down the front gate!” The three demon kings said in great vexation, “These fellows are truly outrageous.” They immediately ordered their armor brought, dressed for battle, took up their weapons, and led the lesser demons out to meet the enemy.此時約有三更時候，半天中月明如晝。It was then about the third watch, and the moon shone in midheaven as brightly as day.走出來，更不打話，便就掄兵。They came out and, without exchanging a word, at once brandished their weapons.這裡行者抵住鉞斧，八戒敵住大刀，沙僧迎住大棍。Here Xingzhe held off the battle-axe, Bajie met the great saber, and Shaseng opposed the heavy cudgel.這場好殺：A fine battle it was:

沙僧道：「闭门不諠哗，想是暗弄我师父。我们动手耶。」行者道：「说的是，快早打门。」那呆子卖弄神通，举钯尽力筑去，把那石门筑得粉碎，却又厉声喊骂道：「偷油的贼怪！快送吾师出来也。」諕得那门内小妖滚将进去，报道：「大王，不好了，不好了，前门被和尚打破了。」三个妖王十分烦恼道：「这厮著实无礼。」即命取披挂结束了，各持兵器，帅小妖出门迎敌。此时约有三更时候，半天中月明如昼。走出来，更不打话，便就抡兵。这里行者抵住钺斧，八戒敌住大刀，沙僧迎住大棍。这场好杀：

三僧三怪賭鬥多時，不見輸贏。The three monks and three monsters fought for a long time, with neither side gaining victory.那辟寒大王喊一聲，叫：「小的們上來。」眾精各執兵刃齊來，早把個八戒絆倒在地，被幾個水牛精揪揪扯扯，拖入洞裡綑了。King Bihan gave a shout: “Underlings, come forward!” All the demons rushed in with weapons in hand. They soon tripped Bajie to the ground, where several buffalo spirits seized and tugged him, dragged him into the cave, and bound him.沙僧見沒了八戒，只見那群牛發喊��聲。When Shaseng saw that Bajie was gone, he heard the whole herd of ox-demons raise a thunderous cry.即掣寶杖，望辟塵大王虛丟了架子要走。He immediately drew back his precious staff, made a feint at King Bichen, and turned as if to flee.又被群精一擁而來，拉一個躘踵，急掙不起，也被捉去綑了。But the demons swarmed upon him, made him stumble, and before he could struggle to his feet, seized and bound him as well.行者覺道難為，縱觔斗雲，脫身而去。Xingzhe saw that the situation was hopeless, so he mounted his somersault cloud and escaped.當時把八戒、沙僧拖至唐僧前。They then dragged Bajie and Shaseng before Tang Seng.唐僧見了，滿眼垂淚道：「可憐你二人也遭了毒手。Seeing them, Tang Seng shed floods of tears and said, “Alas, you two have also fallen into their cruel hands!悟空何在？」沙僧道：「師兄見捉住我們，他就走了。」唐僧道：「他既走了，必然那裡去求救。Where is Wukong?” Shaseng replied, “When Elder Brother saw us captured, he fled.” Tang Seng said, “Since he escaped, he must have gone somewhere to seek help.但我等不知何日方得脫網。」師徒們悽悽慘慘不題。But we do not know on what day we shall finally escape this net.” Master and disciples remained there in grief and misery.

三僧三怪赌斗多时，不见输赢。那辟寒大王喊一声，叫：「小的们上来。」众精各执兵刃齐来，早把个八戒绊倒在地，被几个水牛精揪揪扯扯，拖入洞里捆了。沙僧见没了八戒，只见那群牛发喊𡅃声。即掣宝杖，望辟尘大王虚丢了架子要走。又被群精一拥而来，拉一个躘踵，急挣不起，也被捉去捆了。行者觉道难为，纵觔斗云，脱身而去。当时把八戒、沙僧拖至唐僧前。唐僧见了，满眼垂泪道：「可怜你二人也遭了毒手。悟空何在？」沙僧道：「师兄见捉住我们，他就走了。」唐僧道：「他既走了，必然那里去求救。但我等不知何日方得脱网。」师徒们凄凄惨惨不题。

卻說行者駕觔斗雲復至慈雲寺，寺僧接著，來問：「唐老爺救得否？」行者道：「難救，難救。Now Xingzhe rode his somersault cloud back to Ciyun Monastery. The monks received him and asked, “Did you rescue Master Tang?” Xingzhe replied, “Hard to rescue him—very hard!那妖精神通廣大，我弟兄三個與他三人鬥了多時，被他呼小妖先捉了八戒，後捉了沙僧，老孫幸走脫了。」眾僧害怕道：「爺爺這般會騰雲駕霧，還捉獲不得，想老師父被傾害也。」行者道：「不妨，不妨。Those demons possess tremendous powers. The three of us fought the three of them for a long while, but they summoned the lesser demons, who first captured Bajie and then Shaseng. Only old Sun was fortunate enough to escape.” The monks said fearfully, “Grandfather, even with your ability to soar through the clouds and ride the mist, you could not overcome them; it seems the venerable master is doomed.” Xingzhe said, “Never fear, never fear.我師父自有伽藍、揭諦、丁甲等神暗中護佑，卻也曾吃過草還丹，料不傷命。My master is secretly protected by such gods as the Jialan Guardians, the Jiedi Guardians, and the Spirits of the Six Ding and Six Jia; moreover, he has eaten the Herb-Returning Elixir, so I doubt his life will be harmed.只是那妖精有本事，汝等可好看馬匹、行李，等老孫上天去求救兵來。」眾僧膽怯道：「爺爺又能上天？」行者笑道：「天宮原是我的舊家。It is only that the demons are highly capable. Guard the horse and baggage well while old Sun goes to Heaven to ask for reinforcements.” The monks said timidly, “Grandfather, can you go up to Heaven too?” Xingzhe laughed and said, “The Celestial Palace is my old home.當年我做齊天大聖，因為亂了蟠桃會，被我佛收降。Years ago, when I was Qitian Dasheng, I disrupted the Peach Banquet and was subdued by my Buddha.如今沒奈何，保唐僧取經，將功折罪，一路上輔正除邪。Now, having no choice, I protect Tang Seng on his quest for scriptures, redeeming my crimes through merit and upholding the righteous while destroying evil all along the way.我師父該有此難，汝等卻不知也。」眾僧聽此言，又磕頭禮拜。My master was fated to suffer this ordeal, though none of you knew it.” Hearing this, the monks again kowtowed in reverence.行者出得門，打個唿哨，即時不見。Xingzhe went out through the gate, gave a sharp whistle, and vanished at once.

却说行者驾觔斗云复至慈云寺，寺僧接著，来问：「唐老爷救得否？」行者道：「难救，难救。那妖精神通广大，我弟兄三个与他三人斗了多时，被他呼小妖先捉了八戒，后捉了沙僧，老孙幸走脱了。」众僧害怕道：「爷爷这般会腾云驾雾，还捉获不得，想老师父被倾害也。」行者道：「不妨，不妨。我师父自有伽蓝、揭谛、丁甲等神暗中护佑，却也曾吃过草还丹，料不伤命。只是那妖精有本事，汝等可好看马匹、行李，等老孙上天去求救兵来。」众僧胆怯道：「爷爷又能上天？」行者笑道：「天宫原是我的旧家。当年我做齐天大圣，因为乱了蟠桃会，被我佛收降。如今没奈何，保唐僧取经，将功折罪，一路上辅正除邪。我师父该有此难，汝等却不知也。」众僧听此言，又磕头礼拜。行者出得门，打个唿哨，即时不见。

好大聖，早至西天門外。The splendid Dasheng soon reached the Western Gate of Heaven.忽見太白金星與增長天王、殷、朱、陶、許四大靈官講話。There he suddenly saw Taibai Jinxing conversing with Zengzhang Tianwang and the four Great Divine Officers Yin, Zhu, Tao, and Xu.他見行者來，都慌忙施禮道：「大聖那裡去？」行者道：「因保唐僧行至天竺國東界金平府旻天縣，我師被本縣慈雲寺僧留賞元宵。When they saw Xingzhe arrive, they hurriedly saluted and asked, “Where are you going, Dasheng?” Xingzhe replied, “While escorting Tang Seng, we reached Mintian County in Jinping Prefecture, on the eastern border of Tianzhu. The monks of the local Ciyun Monastery invited my master to stay and view the Lantern Festival.比至金燈橋，有金燈三盞，點燈用酥合香油，價貴白金五萬餘兩，年年有諸佛降祥受用。By the time we reached Jindeng Bridge, there were three golden lamps burning fragrant butter-oil worth over fifty thousand taels of silver, said to be enjoyed each year by buddhas who descended to bestow blessings.正看時，果有三尊佛像降臨。While we watched, three figures in the likeness of buddhas indeed descended.我師不識好歹，上橋就拜。My master, unable to tell good from evil, went onto the bridge and bowed.我說不是好人，早被他侮暗燈光，連油並我師一風攝去。I said they were no good, but they had already darkened the lamps by trickery and swept away both the oil and my master in a gust of wind.我隨風追襲，至天曉，到一山，幸四功曹報道：那山名青龍山，山有玄英洞。I pursued the wind until dawn and reached a mountain, where fortunately the Four Duty Gods informed me that it was Qinglong Mountain, upon which stood Xuanying Cave.洞有三怪，名辟寒大王、辟暑大王、辟塵大王。In the cave dwell three monsters named King Bihan, King Bishu, and King Bichen.老孫急上門尋討，與他賭鬥一陣，未勝。Old Sun hastened to their gate and demanded my master back. I fought them for a time but could not prevail.是我變化入裡，見師父鎖住未傷，隨解了欲出，又被他知覺，我遂走了。I transformed myself and went inside, where I found Master chained but unharmed. I freed him and was about to lead him out when they discovered us, and so I escaped.後又同八戒、沙僧苦戰，復被他將二人也捉去綑了。Later I fought them bitterly with Bajie and Shaseng, but they captured and bound those two as well.老孫因此特啟玉帝，查他來歷，請命將降之。」金星呵呵冷笑道：「大聖既與妖怪相持，豈看不出他的出處？」行者道：「認得，認得，是一夥牛精。For this reason old Sun has come especially to petition the Jade Emperor to investigate their origins and authorize troops to subdue them.” Jinxing chuckled coldly and said, “Dasheng, after contending with the monsters, could you not discern their origins?” Xingzhe replied, “I could, I could: they are a herd of ox-spirits.只是他大有神通，急不能降也。」金星道：「那是三個犀牛之精。But their magic is so great that I could not subdue them in haste.” Jinxing said, “They are three rhinoceros spirits.他因有天文之象，累年修悟成真，亦能飛雲步霧。Because their forms correspond to celestial signs, they have cultivated understanding over many years and attained the truth; they too can fly upon clouds and walk through mist.其怪極愛乾淨，常嫌自己影身，每欲下水洗浴。Such creatures are exceedingly fond of cleanliness and constantly dislike the sight of their own shadows, so they often wish to bathe in water.他的名色也多：有兕犀，有雄犀，有牯犀，有斑犀，又有胡冒犀、墮羅犀、通天花文犀。They have many names and kinds: the si-rhinoceros, the male rhinoceros, the bull rhinoceros, the spotted rhinoceros, the humao rhinoceros, the duoluo rhinoceros, and the sky-piercing flower-patterned rhinoceros.都是一孔三毛二角，行於江海之中，能開水道。All have three hairs in each pore and two horns; traveling through rivers and seas, they can open passages through the water.似那辟寒、辟暑、辟塵都是角有貴氣，故以此為名而稱大王也。As for Bihan, Bishu, and Bichen, their horns all possess a noble aura, which is why they bear those names and style themselves kings.若要拿他，只是四木禽星見面就伏。」行者連忙唱喏問道：「是那四木禽星？If you wish to capture them, they will submit at the mere sight of the Four Wood Birds.” Xingzhe hurriedly bowed and asked, “Which are the Four Wood Birds?煩長庚老一一明示明示。」金星笑道：「此星在斗牛宮外，羅佈乾坤。May Venerable Changgeng explain them to me one by one.” Jinxing laughed and said, “These stars are arrayed throughout the heavens beyond the Palace of the Dipper and Ox.你去奏聞玉帝，便見分明。」行者拱拱手稱謝，徑入天門裡去。Go report to the Jade Emperor, and all will become clear.” Xingzhe cupped his hands in thanks and went straight through the Gate of Heaven.

好大圣，早至西天门外。忽见太白金星与增长天王、殷、朱、陶、许四大灵官讲话。他见行者来，都慌忙施礼道：「大圣那里去？」行者道：「因保唐僧行至天竺国东界金平府旻天县，我师被本县慈云寺僧留赏元宵。比至金灯桥，有金灯三盏，点灯用酥合香油，价贵白金五万余两，年年有诸佛降祥受用。正看时，果有三尊佛像降临。我师不识好歹，上桥就拜。我说不是好人，早被他侮暗灯光，连油并我师一风摄去。我随风追袭，至天晓，到一山，幸四功曹报道：那山名青龙山，山有玄英洞。洞有三怪，名辟寒大王、辟暑大王、辟尘大王。老孙急上门寻讨，与他赌斗一阵，未胜。是我变化入里，见师父锁住未伤，随解了欲出，又被他知觉，我遂走了。后又同八戒、沙僧苦战，复被他将二人也捉去捆了。老孙因此特启玉帝，查他来历，请命将降之。」金星呵呵冷笑道：「大圣既与妖怪相持，岂看不出他的出处？」行者道：「认得，认得，是一伙牛精。只是他大有神通，急不能降也。」金星道：「那是三个犀牛之精。他因有天文之象，累年修悟成真，亦能飞云步雾。其怪极爱干净，常嫌自己影身，每欲下水洗浴。他的名色也多：有兕犀，有雄犀，有牯犀，有斑犀，又有胡冒犀、堕罗犀、通天花文犀。都是一孔三毛二角，行于江海之中，能开水道。似那辟寒、辟暑、辟尘都是角有贵气，故以此为名而称大王也。若要拿他，只是四木禽星见面就伏。」行者连忙唱喏问道：「是那四木禽星？烦长庚老一一明示明示。」金星笑道：「此星在斗牛宫外，罗布干坤。你去奏闻玉帝，便见分明。」行者拱拱手称谢，径入天门里去。

不一時，到於通明殿下，先見葛、丘、張、許四大天師。Before long he reached the Hall of Perfect Light, where he first encountered the four Great Celestial Masters Ge, Qiu, Zhang, and Xu.天師問道：「何往？」行者道：「近行至金平府地方，因我師寬放禪性，元夜觀燈，遇妖魔攝去。The Celestial Masters asked, “Where are you going?” Xingzhe replied, “We recently reached Jinping Prefecture, where my master, indulging his contemplative nature, went to view the lanterns on the Festival night and was carried off by demons.老孫不能收降，特來奏聞玉帝求救。」四天師即領行者至靈霄寶殿啟奏，各各禮畢，備言其事。Old Sun cannot subdue them and has come especially to report to the Jade Emperor and ask for aid.” The four Celestial Masters at once led Xingzhe to the Lingxiao Treasure Hall and submitted the matter after all had performed the proper salutations.玉帝傳旨：「教點那路天兵相助？」行者奏道：「老孫才到西天門，遇長庚星說：那怪是犀牛成精，惟四木禽星可以降伏。」玉帝即差許天師同行者去斗牛宮點四木禽星下界收降。The Jade Emperor issued a decree: “Which division of celestial troops shall be mustered to aid him?” Xingzhe memorialized, “Old Sun just met the Changgeng Star at the Western Gate of Heaven, and he said the monsters are rhinoceros spirits whom only the Four Wood Birds can subdue.” The Jade Emperor immediately ordered Celestial Master Xu to accompany Xingzhe to the Palace of the Dipper and Ox and muster the Four Wood Birds to descend and subdue the demons.

不一时，到于通明殿下，先见葛、丘、张、许四大天师。天师问道：「何往？」行者道：「近行至金平府地方，因我师宽放禅性，元夜观灯，遇妖魔摄去。老孙不能收降，特来奏闻玉帝求救。」四天师即领行者至灵霄宝殿启奏，各各礼毕，备言其事。玉帝传旨：「教点那路天兵相助？」行者奏道：「老孙才到西天门，遇长庚星说：那怪是犀牛成精，惟四木禽星可以降伏。」玉帝即差许天师同行者去斗牛宫点四木禽星下界收降。

及至宮外，早有二十八宿星辰來接。When they reached the palace, the stars of the Twenty-Eight Lunar Lodges were already there to receive them.天師道：「吾奉聖旨，教點四木禽星與孫大聖下界降妖。」傍即閃過角木蛟、斗木獬、奎木狼、井木犴應聲呼道：「孫大聖，點我等何處降妖？」行者笑道：「原來是你。The Celestial Master said, “By imperial decree, I am to muster the Four Wood Birds to descend with Sun Dasheng and subdue demons.” At once Jiaomu Jiao, Doumu Xie, Kuimu Lang, and Jingmu An stepped from the ranks and answered, “Sun Dasheng, where are we being mustered to subdue demons?” Xingzhe laughed and said, “So it is you!這長庚老兒卻隱匿，我不解其意。That old Changgeng concealed the answer, and I did not understand his meaning.早說是二十八宿中的四木，老孫徑來相請，又何必勞煩旨意？」四木道：「大聖說那裡話，我等不奉旨意，誰敢擅離？Had he simply said it was the four Wood stars among the Twenty-Eight Lodges, old Sun could have come directly to invite you; why trouble the Emperor for a decree?” The Four Wood Stars replied, “How can Dasheng say such a thing? Without an imperial decree, which of us would dare leave his post without authorization?端的是那方？Where exactly is the place?快早去來。」行者道：「在金平府東北艮地青龍山玄英洞，犀牛成精。」斗木獬、奎木狼、角木蛟道：「若果是犀牛成精，不須我們，只消井宿去罷，他能上山吃虎，下海擒犀。」行者道：「那犀不比望月之犀，乃是修行得道，都有千年之壽者。Let us hurry there and back.” Xingzhe replied, “At Xuanying Cave on Qinglong Mountain, northeast of Jinping Prefecture; rhinoceroses have become spirits there.” Doumu Xie, Kuimu Lang, and Jiaomu Jiao said, “If they truly are rhinoceros spirits, there is no need for us; the Jing Lodge alone will suffice, for he can climb mountains to devour tigers and enter the sea to seize rhinoceroses.” Xingzhe replied, “Those rhinoceroses are no ordinary moon-gazing beasts; they have cultivated the Way, attained enlightenment, and each is a thousand years old.須得四位同去才好，切勿推調。All four of you must go together; pray do not make excuses.倘一時一位拿他不住，卻不又費事了？」天師道：「你們說得是甚話？If one of you should fail to capture them at once, would that not cause still more trouble?” The Celestial Master said, “What sort of talk is this?旨意著你四人，豈可不去？The decree commands all four of you to go—how could you refuse?趁早飛行。Take flight at once.我回旨去也。」那天師遂別行者而去。I shall return to report compliance.” The Celestial Master then took leave of Xingzhe and departed.

及至宫外，早有二十八宿星辰来接。天师道：「吾奉圣旨，教点四木禽星与孙大圣下界降妖。」傍即闪过角木蛟、斗木獬、奎木狼、井木犴应声呼道：「孙大圣，点我等何处降妖？」行者笑道：「原来是你。这长庚老儿却隐匿，我不解其意。早说是二十八宿中的四木，老孙径来相请，又何必劳烦旨意？」四木道：「大圣说那里话，我等不奉旨意，谁敢擅离？端的是那方？快早去来。」行者道：「在金平府东北艮地青龙山玄英洞，犀牛成精。」斗木獬、奎木狼、角木蛟道：「若果是犀牛成精，不须我们，只消井宿去罢，他能上山吃虎，下海擒犀。」行者道：「那犀不比望月之犀，乃是修行得道，都有千年之寿者。须得四位同去才好，切勿推调。倘一时一位拿他不住，却不又费事了？」天师道：「你们说得是甚话？旨意著你四人，岂可不去？趁早飞行。我回旨去也。」那天师遂别行者而去。

四木道：「大聖不必遲疑，你先去索戰，引他出來，我們隨後動手。」行者即近前罵道：「偷油的賊怪！The Four Wood Stars said, “Dasheng, do not delay. Go first and challenge them, drawing them outside; we shall follow and strike.” Xingzhe at once approached the cave and cursed, “You oil-stealing demon thieves!還我師來。」原來那門被八戒築破，幾個小妖弄了幾塊板兒搪住。Return my master!” The gate had been smashed by Bajie, and several lesser demons had propped up a few planks to block the opening.在裡邊聽得罵詈，急跑進報道：「大王，孫和尚在外面罵哩。！」辟塵兒道：「他敗陣去了，這一日怎麼又來？Hearing the abuse from within, they rushed in to report, “Great Kings, the monk Sun is outside reviling us!” Bichen said, “He fled in defeat; why has he come back after only a day?想是那裡求些救兵來了。」辟寒、辟暑道：「怕他甚麼救兵？He must have gone somewhere to obtain reinforcements.” Bihan and Bishu said, “Why fear any reinforcements he may bring?快取披掛來。Bring our armor at once.小的們都要用心圍繞，休放他走了。」那夥精不知死活，一個個各執槍刀，搖旗擂鼓，走出洞來，對行者喝道：「你個不怕打的猢猻兒，你又來了。」行者最惱得是這「猢猻」二字，咬牙發狠，舉鐵棒就打。Underlings, surround him with care and do not let him escape.” Ignorant that death awaited them, the demons each seized spear or saber, waved their banners, beat their drums, and poured out of the cave, shouting at Xingzhe, “You little macaque who never learns from a beating—you have come again!” Nothing enraged Xingzhe more than the word “macaque”; grinding his teeth in fury, he raised his iron staff and struck.三個妖王調小妖，跑個圈子陣，把行者圈在垓心。The three demon kings directed their underlings to form a circling formation and enclosed Xingzhe at its heart.那壁廂四木禽星一個個各掄兵刃道：「孽畜！From the other side, each of the Four Wood Birds brandished his weapon and cried, “Wicked beasts!休動手。」那三個妖王看他四星，自然害怕，俱道：「不好了，不好了，他尋將降手兒來了。Cease fighting!” When the three demon kings saw the four stars, they naturally grew afraid and all cried, “Disaster! Disaster! He has brought those destined to subdue us!小的們，各顧性命走耶。」只聽得呼呼吼吼，喘喘呵呵，眾小妖都現了本身，原來是那山牛精、水牛精、黃牛精，滿山亂跑。Underlings, flee and save your own lives!” Amid roaring, bellowing, panting, and snorting, all the lesser demons revealed their true forms: they were mountain-cattle spirits, buffalo spirits, and yellow-ox spirits, now fleeing wildly all over the mountain.那三個妖王，也現了本相，放下手來，還是四隻蹄子，就如鐵炮一般，徑往東北上跑。The three demon kings also resumed their true forms, dropped their hands to become four-legged beasts once more, and, like iron cannonballs, raced straight northeastward.這大聖帥井木犴、角木蛟緊追急趕，略不放鬆。Dasheng led Jingmu An and Jiaomu Jiao in close and relentless pursuit, never slackening for an instant.惟有斗木獬、奎木狼在東山凹裡、山頭上、山澗中、山谷內，把些牛精打死的、活捉的，盡皆收淨。Meanwhile, Doumu Xie and Kuimu Lang, in the hollows of the eastern mountain, upon its peaks, and throughout its ravines and valleys, either killed or captured every last ox-spirit.卻向玄英洞裡解了唐僧、八戒、沙僧。They then entered Xuanying Cave and freed Tang Seng, Bajie, and Shaseng.

四木道：「大圣不必迟疑，你先去索战，引他出来，我们随后动手。」行者即近前骂道：「偷油的贼怪！还我师来。」原来那门被八戒筑破，几个小妖弄了几块板儿搪住。在里边听得骂詈，急跑进报道：「大王，孙和尚在外面骂哩。！」辟尘儿道：「他败阵去了，这一日怎么又来？想是那里求些救兵来了。」辟寒、辟暑道：「怕他甚么救兵？快取披挂来。小的们都要用心围绕，休放他走了。」那伙精不知死活，一个个各执枪刀，摇旗擂鼓，走出洞来，对行者喝道：「你个不怕打的猢狲儿，你又来了。」行者最恼得是这「猢狲」二字，咬牙发狠，举铁棒就打。三个妖王调小妖，跑个圈子阵，把行者圈在垓心。那壁厢四木禽星一个个各抡兵刃道：「孽畜！休动手。」那三个妖王看他四星，自然害怕，俱道：「不好了，不好了，他寻将降手儿来了。小的们，各顾性命走耶。」只听得呼呼吼吼，喘喘呵呵，众小妖都现了本身，原来是那山牛精、水牛精、黄牛精，满山乱跑。那三个妖王，也现了本相，放下手来，还是四只蹄子，就如铁炮一般，径往东北上跑。这大圣帅井木犴、角木蛟紧追急赶，略不放松。惟有斗木獬、奎木狼在东山凹里、山头上、山涧中、山谷内，把些牛精打死的、活捉的，尽皆收净。却向玄英洞里解了唐僧、八戒、沙僧。

沙僧認得是二星，隨同拜謝。Shaseng recognized the two stars and joined the others in bowing his thanks.因問：「二位如何到此相救？」二星道：「吾等是孫大聖奏玉帝請旨調來收怪救你也。」唐僧又滴淚道：「我悟空徒弟怎麼不見進來？」二星道：「那三個老怪是三隻犀牛，他見吾等，各各顧命，向東北艮方逃遁，孫大聖帥井木犴、角木蛟追趕去了。He asked, “How did you two come here to rescue us?” The two stars replied, “Sun Dasheng petitioned the Jade Emperor, who ordered us here to subdue the monsters and rescue you.” Tang Seng again shed tears and said, “Why do I not see my disciple Wukong coming in?” The two stars replied, “Those three old monsters are three rhinoceroses. When they saw us, each fled for his life northeastward, and Sun Dasheng has gone in pursuit with Jingmu An and Jiaomu Jiao.我二星掃蕩群牛到此，特來解放聖僧。」唐僧復又頓首拜謝，朝天又拜。We two stars swept away the herd of ox-demons and came here expressly to set the holy monk free.” Tang Seng again bowed his head to the ground in thanks, then bowed toward Heaven.八戒攙起道：「師父，禮多必詐，不須只管拜了。Bajie helped him up and said, “Master, excessive courtesy smacks of deceit; you need not keep bowing.四星官，一則是玉帝聖旨，二則是師兄人情。The four Star Officers came first by the Jade Emperor’s sacred decree and second through Elder Brother’s good offices.今既掃蕩群妖，還不知老妖如何降伏。Now that the lesser demons have been swept away, we still do not know whether the old monsters have been subdued.我們且收拾些細軟東西出來，掀翻此洞，以絕其根，回寺等候師兄罷。」奎木狼道：「天蓬元帥說得有理。Let us gather up whatever valuables we can, overturn this cave to destroy their very roots, and return to the monastery to await Elder Brother.” Kuimu Lang said, “Marshal Tianpeng speaks wisely.”你與捲簾大將保護你師回寺安歇，待吾等還去艮方迎敵。」八戒道：「正是，正是。“You and the Curtain-Raising General escort your master back to the monastery to rest, while we return northeast to meet the enemy.” Bajie said, “Exactly, exactly.”你二位還協同一捉，必須剿盡，方好回旨。」二星官即時追襲。“You two should join forces to capture them; we must wipe them out before we can properly report back.” The two Star Lords immediately set off in pursuit.

沙僧认得是二星，随同拜谢。因问：「二位如何到此相救？」二星道：「吾等是孙大圣奏玉帝请旨调来收怪救你也。」唐僧又滴泪道：「我悟空徒弟怎么不见进来？」二星道：「那三个老怪是三只犀牛，他见吾等，各各顾命，向东北艮方逃遁，孙大圣帅井木犴、角木蛟追赶去了。我二星扫荡群牛到此，特来解放圣僧。」唐僧复又顿首拜谢，朝天又拜。八戒搀起道：「师父，礼多必诈，不须只管拜了。四星官，一则是玉帝圣旨，二则是师兄人情。今既扫荡群妖，还不知老妖如何降伏。我们且收拾些细软东西出来，掀翻此洞，以绝其根，回寺等候师兄罢。」奎木狼道：「天蓬元帅说得有理。你与卷帘大将保护你师回寺安歇，待吾等还去艮方迎敌。」八戒道：「正是，正是。你二位还协同一捉，必须剿尽，方好回旨。」二星官即时追袭。

八戒與沙僧將他洞內細軟寶貝（有許多珊瑚、瑪瑙、珍珠、琥珀、琚、寶貝、美玉、良金）搜出一石，搬在外面。Bajie and Sha Seng searched out the portable valuables and treasures in the cave—including quantities of coral, agate, pearls, amber, jade ornaments, precious stones, fine jade, and pure gold—and carried the whole heap outside.請師父到山崖上坐了，他又進去放起火來，把一座洞燒成灰燼。They asked their master to sit upon the cliff, then went back inside and set a fire, reducing the entire cave to ashes.卻才領唐僧找路回金平慈雲寺去。Only then did they lead Tang Seng along the road back to Ciyun Monastery in Jinping.正是：Indeed:

八戒与沙僧将他洞内细软宝贝（有许多珊瑚、玛瑙、珍珠、琥珀、琚、宝贝、美玉、良金）搜出一石，搬在外面。请师父到山崖上坐了，他又进去放起火来，把一座洞烧成灰烬。却才领唐僧找路回金平慈云寺去。正是：

且不言他三眾得命回寺。For the moment, we shall say no more of how the three of them returned safely to the monastery.卻表斗木獬、奎木狼二星官駕雲直向東北艮方趕妖怪來，二人在那半空中尋看不見。Instead, we tell how the two Star Lords Doumuxie and Kuimulang rode their clouds straight northeast to pursue the monsters, but could see no sign of them anywhere in midair.直到西洋大海，遠望見孫大聖在海上吆喝。Not until they reached the Western Ocean did they glimpse Sun Dasheng in the distance, shouting over the sea.他兩個按落雲頭道：「大聖，妖怪那裡去了？」行者恨道：「你兩個怎麼不來追降？The two lowered their clouds and said, “Dasheng, where have the monsters gone?” Wukong said angrily, “Why did you two not come and help pursue and subdue them?這會子卻冒冒失失的問甚？」斗木獬道：「我見大聖與井、角二星戰敗妖魔追趕，料必擒拿。And now you come blundering up to ask such a question?” Doumuxie said, “When I saw Dasheng and the two Stars Jing and Jiao defeat the demons and give chase, I was sure you would capture them.我二人卻就掃蕩群精，入玄英洞救出你師父、師弟。The two of us therefore swept away the lesser fiends, entered Xuanying Cave, and rescued your master and junior brothers.搜了山，燒了洞，把你師父付托與你二弟，領回府城慈雲寺。We searched the mountain and burned the cave, then entrusted your master to your two brothers to escort back to Ciyun Monastery in the prefectural city.多時不見車駕回轉，故又追尋到此也。」行者聞言，方才喜謝道：「如此，卻是有功，多累，多累。When your honored party had still not returned after so long, we came in pursuit and followed you here.” Hearing this, Wukong was at last pleased and thanked them, saying, “Then you have indeed rendered great service; I am deeply obliged, deeply obliged.但那三個妖魔被我趕到此間，他就鑽下海去。But I chased the three demons here, and they dived beneath the sea.當有井、角二星緊緊追拿，教老孫在岸邊抵擋。The two Stars Jing and Jiao followed close behind to capture them, telling old Sun to stand guard on the shore.你兩個既來，且在岸邊把截，等老孫也再去來。」Since you two are here, hold the shore and cut off their escape while old Sun goes down again.”

且不言他三众得命回寺。却表斗木獬、奎木狼二星官驾云直向东北艮方赶妖怪来，二人在那半空中寻看不见。直到西洋大海，远望见孙大圣在海上吆喝。他两个按落云头道：「大圣，妖怪那里去了？」行者恨道：「你两个怎么不来追降？这会子却冒冒失失的问甚？」斗木獬道：「我见大圣与井、角二星战败妖魔追赶，料必擒拿。我二人却就扫荡群精，入玄英洞救出你师父、师弟。搜了山，烧了洞，把你师父付托与你二弟，领回府城慈云寺。多时不见车驾回转，故又追寻到此也。」行者闻言，方才喜谢道：「如此，却是有功，多累，多累。但那三个妖魔被我赶到此间，他就钻下海去。当有井、角二星紧紧追拿，教老孙在岸边抵挡。你两个既来，且在岸边把截，等老孙也再去来。」

好大聖，掄著棒，捻著訣，辟開水逕，直入波濤深處，只見那三個妖魔在水底下與井木犴、角木蛟捨死忘生苦鬥哩。Splendid Dasheng! Brandishing his staff and making a spell with his fingers, he opened a path through the water and plunged straight into the depths, where he saw the three demons fighting desperately for their lives against Jingmu’an and Jiaomujiao on the seabed.他跳近前喊道：「老孫來也。」那妖精抵住二星官，措手不及，正在危難之處，忽聽得行者叫喊，顧殘生，撥轉頭往海心裡飛跑。He leaped forward and cried, “Old Sun is here!” The fiends were already hard-pressed by the two Star Lords and in grave danger; suddenly hearing Wukong’s shout, they thought only of saving their wretched lives, wheeled around, and fled toward the heart of the sea.原來這怪頭上角極能分水，只聞得花花花，沖開明路。The horns on these creatures’ heads could part the water exceedingly well; with a rushing roar, they opened a clear passage before them.這後邊二星官並孫大聖並力追之。Behind them, the two Star Lords and Sun Dasheng combined their strength in pursuit.

好大圣，抡著棒，捻著诀，辟开水径，直入波涛深处，只见那三个妖魔在水底下与井木犴、角木蛟舍死忘生苦斗哩。他跳近前喊道：「老孙来也。」那妖精抵住二星官，措手不及，正在危难之处，忽听得行者叫喊，顾残生，拨转头往海心里飞跑。原来这怪头上角极能分水，只闻得花花花，冲开明路。这后边二星官并孙大圣并力追之。

卻說西海中有個探海的夜叉、巡海的介士，遠見犀牛分開水勢，又認得孫大聖與二天星，即赴水晶宮對龍王慌慌張張報道：「大王，有三隻犀牛，被齊天大聖和二位天星趕來也。」老龍王敖順聽言，即喚太子摩昂：「快點水兵，想是犀牛精辟寒、辟暑、辟塵兒三個惹了孫行者，今既至海，快快拔刀相助。」敖摩昂得令，即忙點兵。Now in the Western Sea there were a sea-scouting yaksha and an armored sea patrolman; from afar they saw the rhinoceroses parting the waters and recognized Sun Dasheng and the two heavenly Stars, so they hurried to the Crystal Palace and reported breathlessly to the Dragon King, “Great King, three rhinoceroses are being chased this way by Qitian Dasheng and two heavenly Stars!” The old Dragon King Ao Shun immediately summoned Crown Prince Mo’ang and said, “Muster the water troops at once. These must be the rhinoceros spirits Bihan, Bishu, and Bichen, who have provoked Sun Wukong. Now that they have reached our sea, draw your sword quickly and help him.” Ao Mo’ang received the order and hastened to muster the troops.頃刻間，龜鱉黿鼉、鯁鮊鱖鯉與蝦兵蟹卒等各執槍刀，一齊吶喊，騰出水晶宮外，擋住犀牛精。In moments, turtles, soft-shelled turtles, giant turtles, alligators, and every kind of fish, together with shrimp soldiers and crab warriors, each bearing spear or sword, surged shouting from the Crystal Palace and blocked the rhinoceros spirits’ way.犀牛精不能前進，急退後，又有井、角二星並大聖攔阻。Unable to advance, the rhinoceros spirits hastily retreated, only to find the two Stars Jing and Jiao and Dasheng barring them from behind.慌得他失了群，各各逃生，四散奔走，早把個辟塵兒被老龍王領兵圍住。In their panic they became separated and fled for their lives in every direction; Bichen was soon surrounded by the old Dragon King and his troops.孫大聖見了心歡，叫道：「消停，消停，捉活的，不要死的。」摩昂聽令，一擁上前，將辟塵兒扳翻在地，用鐵鉤子穿了鼻，攢蹄綑倒。Sun Dasheng rejoiced at the sight and cried, “Steady, steady! Take him alive; I do not want him dead.” Mo’ang obeyed, and they swarmed forward, threw Bichen to the ground, pierced his nose with an iron hook, bound his four hooves together, and laid him helpless.

老龍王又傳號令，教分兵趕那兩個，協助二星官擒拿。The old Dragon King issued another command, ordering his troops to divide and pursue the other two, assisting the two Star Lords in their capture.即時小龍王帥眾前來，只見井木犴現原身，按住辟寒兒，大口小口的啃著吃哩。The young Dragon Prince immediately led his forces onward and found Jingmu’an in his true form, pinning down Bihan and gnawing away at him with great and little bites.摩昂高叫道：「井宿，井宿，莫咬死他，孫大聖要活的，不要死的哩。」連喊數喊，已是被他把頸項咬斷了。Mo’ang shouted, “Lord Jing, Lord Jing! Do not bite him to death! Sun Dasheng wants him alive, not dead!” But though he shouted again and again, Jingmu’an had already bitten through the creature’s neck.

老龙王又传号令，教分兵赶那两个，协助二星官擒拿。即时小龙王帅众前来，只见井木犴现原身，按住辟寒儿，大口小口的啃著吃哩。摩昂高叫道：「井宿，井宿，莫咬死他，孙大圣要活的，不要死的哩。」连喊数喊，已是被他把颈项咬断了。

摩昂吩咐蝦兵蟹卒，將個死犀牛擡轉水晶宮，卻又與井木犴向前追趕。Mo’ang ordered the shrimp soldiers and crab warriors to carry the dead rhinoceros back to the Crystal Palace, then went forward with Jingmu’an to continue the chase.只見角木蛟把那辟暑兒倒趕回來，只撞著井宿。Presently they saw Jiaomujiao driving Bishu back toward them, straight into the path of Lord Jing.摩昂帥龜鱉黿鼉，撒開簸箕陣圍住。Mo’ang led the turtles, soft-shelled turtles, giant turtles, and alligators in spreading out into a winnowing-basket formation around him.那怪只教：「饒命，饒命。」井木犴走近前，一把揪住耳朵，奪了他的刀，叫道：「不殺你，不殺你，拿與孫大聖發落去來。」The monster could only cry, “Spare my life! Spare my life!” Jingmu’an strode forward, seized him by the ear, snatched away his sword, and said, “We shall not kill you, we shall not kill you. Come along to Sun Dasheng and receive his judgment.”

摩昂吩咐虾兵蟹卒，将个死犀牛抬转水晶宫，却又与井木犴向前追赶。只见角木蛟把那辟暑儿倒赶回来，只撞著井宿。摩昂帅龟鳖鼋鼍，撒开簸箕阵围住。那怪只教：「饶命，饶命。」井木犴走近前，一把揪住耳朵，夺了他的刀，叫道：「不杀你，不杀你，拿与孙大圣发落去来。」

當即倒干戈，復至水晶宮外，報道：「都捉來也。」行者見一個斷了頭，血淋淋的，倒在地下。They immediately reversed their weapons and returned outside the Crystal Palace, reporting, “They have all been captured.” Wukong saw one of them lying on the ground with its head torn off, drenched in blood.一個被井木犴揪著耳朵，推跪在地。The other was held by the ear by Jingmu’an and shoved to his knees.近前仔細看了道：「這頭不是兵刀傷的啊。」摩昂笑道：「不是我喊得緊，連身子都著井星官吃了。」行者道：「既是如此，也罷，取鋸子來，鋸下他的這兩隻角，剝了皮帶去。Wukong stepped closer, examined the corpse carefully, and said, “That wound was not made by any weapon.” Mo’ang laughed and said, “Had I not shouted so urgently, Lord Jing would have eaten the body as well.” Wukong said, “Since that is how it happened, so be it. Bring a saw, cut off his two horns, and skin him for us to take away.犀牛肉還留與龍王賢父子享之。」又把辟塵兒穿了鼻，教角木蛟牽著；Leave the rhinoceros meat for the worthy Dragon King and his son to enjoy.” They then pierced Bichen’s nose and had Jiaomujiao lead him;辟暑兒也穿了鼻，教井木犴牽著：「帶他上金平府見那刺史官，明究其由，問他個積年假佛害民，然後的決。」they also pierced Bishu’s nose and had Jingmu’an lead him, saying, “Take them up to Jinping Prefecture to face the prefect. We shall thoroughly investigate how they impersonated Buddhas and harmed the people all these years, and then have them executed.”

当即倒干戈，复至水晶宫外，报道：「都捉来也。」行者见一个断了头，血淋淋的，倒在地下。一个被井木犴揪著耳朵，推跪在地。近前仔细看了道：「这头不是兵刀伤的啊。」摩昂笑道：「不是我喊得紧，连身子都著井星官吃了。」行者道：「既是如此，也罢，取锯子来，锯下他的这两只角，剥了皮带去。犀牛肉还留与龙王贤父子享之。」又把辟尘儿穿了鼻，教角木蛟牵著；辟暑儿也穿了鼻，教井木犴牵著：「带他上金平府见那刺史官，明究其由，问他个积年假佛害民，然后的决。」

眾等遵言，辭龍王父子，都出西海。Everyone obeyed, took leave of the Dragon King and his son, and emerged from the Western Sea.牽著犀牛，會著奎、斗二星，駕雲霧，徑轉金平府。Leading the rhinoceroses, they joined the two Stars Kui and Dou, mounted the clouds and mist, and returned directly to Jinping Prefecture.行者足踏祥光，半空中叫道：「金平府刺史、各佐貳郎官並府城內外軍民人等聽著：吾乃東土大唐差往西天取經的聖僧。Wukong stood upon an auspicious radiance and called from midair, “Prefect of Jinping, assistant officials, officers, soldiers, and all people within and beyond the city, hear me! We are the holy monk and his disciples sent from the Great Tang in the Eastern Land to fetch scriptures from the Western Heaven.你這府縣，每年家供獻金燈，假充諸佛降祥者，即此犀牛之怪。Those who came each year to your prefecture and counties to receive the golden lamps, pretending to be Buddhas descending to bestow blessings, were none other than these rhinoceros monsters.我等過此，因元夜觀燈，見這怪將燈油並我師父攝去，是我請天神收伏。Passing through this place, we went to view the lanterns on the night of the first full moon and saw these monsters carry off both the lamp oil and my master; therefore I called upon the heavenly gods to subdue them.今已掃清山洞，剿盡妖魔，不得為害。Their mountain cave has now been cleared out and the demons utterly destroyed, so they can do no further harm.以後你府縣再不可供獻金燈，勞民傷財也。」Henceforth your prefecture and counties must never again offer golden lamps, exhausting the people and wasting their wealth.”

众等遵言，辞龙王父子，都出西海。牵著犀牛，会著奎、斗二星，驾云雾，径转金平府。行者足踏祥光，半空中叫道：「金平府刺史、各佐贰郎官并府城内外军民人等听著：吾乃东土大唐差往西天取经的圣僧。你这府县，每年家供献金灯，假充诸佛降祥者，即此犀牛之怪。我等过此，因元夜观灯，见这怪将灯油并我师父摄去，是我请天神收伏。今已扫清山洞，剿尽妖魔，不得为害。以后你府县再不可供献金灯，劳民伤财也。」

那慈雲寺裡，八戒、沙僧方保唐僧進得山門，只聽見行者在半空言語，即便撇了師父，丟下擔子，縱風雲起到空中，問行者降妖之事。At Ciyun Monastery, Bajie and Sha Seng had just escorted Tang Seng through the gate when they heard Wukong speaking in midair; they promptly left their master and baggage behind, mounted wind and cloud, and rose into the sky to ask Wukong how the demons had been subdued.行者道：「那一隻被井星咬死，已鋸角剝皮帶來；Wukong said, “One was bitten to death by Lord Jing; we sawed off his horns, skinned him, and brought them here.兩隻活拿在此。」八戒道：「這兩個索性推下此城，與官員人等看看，也認得我們是聖是神。The other two were captured alive.” Bajie said, “Let us push these two down into the city so that the officials and people may see them and recognize that we are holy beings and gods.左右累四位星官收雲下地，同到府堂，將這怪的決。Since the four Star Lords have already taken all this trouble, let them lower their clouds and come with us to the prefectural hall, where we can execute the monsters.已此情真罪當，再有甚講？」四星道：「天蓬帥近來知理明律，卻好呀。」八戒道：「因做了這幾年和尚，也略學得些兒。」眾神果推落犀牛，一簇彩雲，降至府堂之上。The facts are established and their crimes merit death—what more is there to discuss?” The four Stars said, “Marshal Tianpeng has lately become learned in reason and law; very good indeed!” Bajie said, “After serving as a monk these several years, I have picked up a little.” The gods duly pushed the rhinoceroses down and descended in a cluster of colored clouds onto the prefectural hall.諕得這府縣官員、城裡城外人等，都家家設香案，戶戶拜天神。The prefectural and county officials and all the people inside and outside the city were so awed that every household set out an incense table and every family worshiped the heavenly gods.

那慈云寺里，八戒、沙僧方保唐僧进得山门，只听见行者在半空言语，即便撇了师父，丢下担子，纵风云起到空中，问行者降妖之事。行者道：「那一只被井星咬死，已锯角剥皮带来；两只活拿在此。」八戒道：「这两个索性推下此城，与官员人等看看，也认得我们是圣是神。左右累四位星官收云下地，同到府堂，将这怪的决。已此情真罪当，再有甚讲？」四星道：「天蓬帅近来知理明律，却好呀。」八戒道：「因做了这几年和尚，也略学得些儿。」众神果推落犀牛，一簇彩云，降至府堂之上。諕得这府县官员、城里城外人等，都家家设香案，户户拜天神。

少時間，慈雲寺僧把長老用轎擡進府門，會著行者，口中不離「謝」字道：「有勞上宿星官救出我等。Before long, the monks of Ciyun Monastery carried the elder into the prefectural compound in a sedan chair. On meeting Wukong, he could not cease thanking them: “I am deeply indebted to the exalted Star Lords for rescuing us.因不見賢徒，懸懸在念，今幸得勝而回。Not seeing my worthy disciple, I was constantly anxious; happily, you have now returned victorious.然此怪不知趕向何方才捕獲也？」行者道：「自前日別了尊師，老孫上天查訪，蒙太白金星識得妖魔是犀牛，指示請四木禽星。Yet in what direction did you pursue these monsters before finally capturing them?” Wukong said, “After leaving honored Master the day before yesterday, old Sun went to Heaven to investigate. Taibai Jinxing recognized the demons as rhinoceroses and directed me to summon the four Wood-Beast Stars.當時奏聞玉帝，蒙旨差委，直至洞口交戰，妖王走了。I reported the matter to the Jade Emperor, who graciously issued his decree and appointed them. We went straight to the cave mouth and gave battle, but the demon kings escaped.又蒙斗、奎二宿救出尊師。Then, thanks to the two Stars Dou and Kui, honored Master was rescued.老孫與井、角二宿並力追妖，直趕到西洋大海，又虧龍王遣子帥兵相助，所以捕獲到此審究也。」長老讚揚稱謝不已。Old Sun joined forces with the two Stars Jing and Jiao and pursued the demons all the way to the Western Ocean. There the Dragon King kindly sent his son and troops to our aid, and thus we captured them and brought them here for judgment.” The elder praised and thanked them without end.又見那府縣正官並佐貳首領，都在那裡高燒寶燭，滿斗焚香，朝上禮拜。He also saw the prefect, county magistrates, assistant officials, and their chiefs burning precious candles high and whole bushels of incense as they bowed toward the heavens.

少时间，慈云寺僧把长老用轿抬进府门，会著行者，口中不离「谢」字道：「有劳上宿星官救出我等。因不见贤徒，悬悬在念，今幸得胜而回。然此怪不知赶向何方才捕获也？」行者道：「自前日别了尊师，老孙上天查访，蒙太白金星识得妖魔是犀牛，指示请四木禽星。当时奏闻玉帝，蒙旨差委，直至洞口交战，妖王走了。又蒙斗、奎二宿救出尊师。老孙与井、角二宿并力追妖，直赶到西洋大海，又亏龙王遣子帅兵相助，所以捕获到此审究也。」长老赞扬称谢不已。又见那府县正官并佐贰首领，都在那里高烧宝烛，满斗焚香，朝上礼拜。

少頃間，八戒發起性來，掣出戒刀，將辟塵兒頭一刀砍下，又一刀把辟暑兒頭也砍下。After a while, Bajie’s temper flared. Drawing his monk’s knife, he cut off Bichen’s head with one stroke and Bishu’s with another.隨即取鋸子鋸下四隻角來。He then fetched a saw and cut off their four horns.孫大聖更有主張：就教四位星官將此四隻犀角拿上界去，進貢玉帝，回繳聖旨。Sun Dasheng had a further plan: he told the four Star Lords to take these four rhinoceros horns to the celestial realm, present them as tribute to the Jade Emperor, and report the fulfillment of his decree.把自己帶來的二隻，留一隻在府堂鎮庫，以作向後免徵燈油之證；Of the two horns he himself had brought, he left one in the prefectural treasury as proof that the levy of lamp oil was henceforth abolished;自己帶一隻去，獻靈山佛祖。the other he kept to take to Vulture Peak and offer to the Buddha.四星心中大喜。The four Stars were delighted.即時拜別大聖，忽駕彩雲回奏而去。They immediately bade Dasheng farewell, mounted colored clouds, and returned to make their report.

少顷间，八戒发起性来，掣出戒刀，将辟尘儿头一刀砍下，又一刀把辟暑儿头也砍下。随即取锯子锯下四只角来。孙大圣更有主张：就教四位星官将此四只犀角拿上界去，进贡玉帝，回缴圣旨。把自己带来的二只，留一只在府堂镇库，以作向后免征灯油之证；自己带一只去，献灵山佛祖。四星心中大喜。即时拜别大圣，忽驾彩云回奏而去。

府縣官留住他師徒四眾，大排素宴，遍請鄉官陪奉。The prefectural and county officials detained the master and his three disciples, laid out a grand vegetarian banquet, and invited all the local dignitaries to attend them.一壁廂出給告示，曉諭軍民人等，下年不許點設金燈，永蠲買油大戶之役。Meanwhile, they issued proclamations informing the soldiers and people that no golden lamps were to be set up the following year, and permanently abolished the service imposed on the wealthy households that had supplied the oil.一壁廂叫屠子宰剝，犀牛之皮硝熟燻乾，製造鎧甲；At the same time, they ordered butchers to flay the rhinoceroses and cure and smoke-dry their hides to make armor;把肉普給官員人等。the meat was distributed among the officials and people.又一壁廂動支枉罰無礙錢糧，買民間空地，起建四星降妖之廟，又為唐僧四眾建立生祠，各各樹碑刻文，用傳千古，以為報謝。They also appropriated unencumbered funds obtained from fines to buy vacant land, where they built a temple to the four Stars who had subdued the demons and living shrines to Tang Seng and his three disciples. Steles were erected and inscriptions carved for each, so that the story might be handed down through the ages in gratitude.

府县官留住他师徒四众，大排素宴，遍请乡官陪奉。一壁厢出给告示，晓谕军民人等，下年不许点设金灯，永蠲买油大户之役。一壁厢叫屠子宰剥，犀牛之皮硝熟熏干，制造铠甲；把肉普给官员人等。又一壁厢动支枉罚无碍钱粮，买民间空地，起建四星降妖之庙，又为唐僧四众建立生祠，各各树碑刻文，用传千古，以为报谢。

師徒們索性寬懷領受。The master and disciples put aside their cares and accepted these honors.又被那二百四十家燈油大戶這家酬，那家請，略無虛刻。Moreover, the two hundred and forty wealthy households that had supplied the lamp oil rewarded them in one home and feasted them in another, leaving scarcely a moment unoccupied.八戒遂心滿意受用，把洞裡搜來的寶物，每樣各籠些須在袖，以為各家齋筵之賞。Bajie enjoyed himself to his heart’s content, and from each kind of treasure taken from the cave he tucked a little into his sleeves as gifts for the hosts of the various vegetarian feasts.住經個月，猶不得起身。They stayed more than a month and still could not get away.長老吩咐：「悟空，將餘剩的寶物盡送慈雲寺僧，以為酬禮。At last the elder instructed them, “Wukong, give all the remaining treasure to the monks of Ciyun Monastery as our thanks.瞞著那些大戶人家，天不明走罷。Without telling those wealthy households, let us leave before dawn.恐只管貪樂，誤了取經，惹佛祖見罪，又生災厄，深為不便。」行者隨將前件一一處分。If we go on craving pleasure, we shall delay our scripture pilgrimage, incur the Buddha’s displeasure, and bring fresh calamities upon ourselves; that would be most unfortunate.” Wukong accordingly made arrangements for each matter.

师徒们索性宽怀领受。又被那二百四十家灯油大户这家酬，那家请，略无虚刻。八戒遂心满意受用，把洞里搜来的宝物，每样各笼些须在袖，以为各家斋筵之赏。住经个月，犹不得起身。长老吩咐：「悟空，将余剩的宝物尽送慈云寺僧，以为酬礼。瞒著那些大户人家，天不明走罢。恐只管贪乐，误了取经，惹佛祖见罪，又生灾厄，深为不便。」行者随将前件一一处分。

次日五更早起，喚八戒備馬。Early in the fifth watch the next morning, they rose, and Bajie was called to saddle the horse.那獃子吃了自在酒飯，睡得夢夢乍道：「這早備馬怎的？」行者喝道：「師父教走路哩。」獃子抹抹臉道：「又是這長老沒正經。The idiot, having eaten and drunk at ease, was sleeping soundly. Starting from his dreams, he said, “Why saddle the horse so early?” Wukong shouted, “Master says we are leaving.” Rubbing his face, the idiot said, “That elder is being unreasonable again.二百四十家大戶都請，才吃了有三十幾頓飽齋，怎麼又弄老豬忍餓？」長老聽言罵道：「饢糟的夯貨，莫胡說，快早起來；All two hundred and forty wealthy households mean to invite us, and we have eaten only thirty-odd full vegetarian meals. Why is he making old Zhu go hungry again?” Hearing this, the elder cursed him: “You swill-guzzling oaf, stop your nonsense and get up at once!再若強嘴，教悟空拿金箍棒打牙。」那獃子聽見說打，慌了手腳道：「師父今番變了：常時疼我愛我，念我蠢夯護我，哥要打時，他又勸解；If you talk back again, I shall have Wukong knock out your teeth with his golden-hooped staff.” Hearing talk of a beating, the idiot panicked and said, “Master has changed this time. Usually he cherishes and favors me, and protects me because I am stupid and clumsy; whenever my brother means to beat me, he talks him out of it.今日怎麼發狠轉教打麼？」行者道：「師父怪你為嘴，誤了路程。Why is he so fierce today that he actually orders him to beat me?” Wukong said, “Master is angry that your appetite is delaying our journey.快早收拾行李，備馬，免打！」那獃子真個怕打，跳起來穿了衣服，吆喝沙僧：「快起來，打將來了。」沙僧也隨跳起，各各收拾皆完。Hurry and pack the luggage and saddle the horse, if you want to escape a beating!” The idiot truly feared being beaten; he leaped up, dressed, and shouted to Sha Seng, “Get up quickly—the beating is coming!” Sha Seng also sprang up, and soon they had everything packed.長老搖手道：「寂寂悄悄的，不要驚動寺僧。」連忙上馬開了山門，找路而去。The elder waved his hand and said, “Quietly, quietly; do not wake the monks.” He swiftly mounted, they opened the monastery gate, found the road, and departed.這一去，正所謂：Of this departure it may truly be said:

次日五更早起，唤八戒备马。那呆子吃了自在酒饭，睡得梦梦乍道：「这早备马怎的？」行者喝道：「师父教走路哩。」呆子抹抹脸道：「又是这长老没正经。二百四十家大户都请，才吃了有三十几顿饱斋，怎么又弄老猪忍饿？」长老听言骂道：「馕糟的夯货，莫胡说，快早起来；再若强嘴，教悟空拿金箍棒打牙。」那呆子听见说打，慌了手脚道：「师父今番变了：常时疼我爱我，念我蠢夯护我，哥要打时，他又劝解；今日怎么发狠转教打么？」行者道：「师父怪你为嘴，误了路程。快早收拾行李，备马，免打！」那呆子真个怕打，跳起来穿了衣服，吆喝沙僧：「快起来，打将来了。」沙僧也随跳起，各各收拾皆完。长老摇手道：「寂寂悄悄的，不要惊动寺僧。」连忙上马开了山门，找路而去。这一去，正所谓：
