且不言唐长老困苦。却说那三个魔头齐心竭力，与大圣兄弟三人，在城东半山内努力争持。这一场，正是那铁刷帚刷铜锅──家家挺硬。好杀：

他六個鬥夠多時，漸漸天晚。The six of them fought for a long time, until gradually evening fell.卻又是風霧漫漫，霎時間就黑暗了。Moreover the wind and mist grew thick and boundless, and in an instant darkness fell.原來八戒耳大，蓋著眼皮，越發昏濛；It happened that Bajie's ears were large and covered his eyelids, making things even more dim and blurred for him;手腳慢，又遮架不住：拖著鈀，敗陣就走。his hands and feet were slow, and he could no longer parry or block: dragging his rake, he broke from the battle and fled.被老魔舉刀砍去，幾乎傷命。The Old Demon raised his saber and hacked at him, nearly costing him his life.幸躲過頭腦，被口刀削斷幾根鬃毛，趕上張開口咬著領頭，拿入城中，丟與小怪，綑在金鑾殿。Fortunately he dodged the blow to his head, though the blade sliced off a few bristles; the demon then caught up, opened his mouth, bit hold of his collar, carried him into the city, and threw him to the junior demons, who bound him in the Golden Throne Hall.老妖又駕雲，起在半空助力。The Old Demon then rode the clouds again, rising into midair to lend his strength to the fight.沙和尚見事不諧，虛幌著寶杖，顧本身回頭便走。Seeing things had gone badly, Sha Monk made a feint with his precious staff, then turned and fled to save himself.被二怪捽開鼻子，響一聲，連手捲住，拿到城裡，也叫小妖綑在殿下。The Second Demon flung open his trunk with a loud crack, coiled it around him along with his hands, carried him into the city, and likewise had the junior demons bind him beneath the hall.卻又騰空去叫拿行者。Then he soared into the air again to go seize Xingzhe.

他六个斗够多时，渐渐天晚。却又是风雾漫漫，霎时间就黑暗了。原来八戒耳大，盖著眼皮，越发昏蒙；手脚慢，又遮架不住：拖著钯，败阵就走。被老魔举刀砍去，几乎伤命。幸躲过头脑，被口刀削断几根鬃毛，赶上张开口咬著领头，拿入城中，丢与小怪，捆在金銮殿。老妖又驾云，起在半空助力。沙和尚见事不谐，虚幌著宝杖，顾本身回头便走。被二怪捽开鼻子，响一声，连手卷住，拿到城里，也叫小妖捆在殿下。却又腾空去叫拿行者。

行者見兩個兄弟遭擒，他自家獨力難撐，正是：好手不敵雙拳，雙拳難敵四手。Seeing his two brothers captured, Xingzhe knew he alone could not hold out; truly, as the saying goes: a good hand cannot match two fists, and two fists cannot match four hands.他喊一聲，把棍子隔開三個妖魔的兵器，縱觔斗駕雲走了。He gave a shout, used his cudgel to sweep aside the weapons of all three demons, and sprang onto a somersault cloud to flee.三怪見行者駕觔斗時，即抖抖身，現了本像，搧開兩翅，趕上大聖。When the Third Demon saw Xingzhe mount his somersault cloud, he shook his body at once, revealed his true form, spread open his two wings, and gave chase after the Great Sage.你道他怎能趕上？You may ask, how could he catch up?當時如行者鬧天宮，十萬天兵也拿他不住者，以他會駕觔斗雲，一去有十萬八千里路，所以諸神不能趕上。Recall that when Xingzhe once threw Heaven into turmoil, even a hundred thousand heavenly troops could not capture him, because he could ride the somersault cloud, covering a hundred and eight thousand li in a single leap, so that none of the gods could catch him.這妖精搧一翅就有九萬里，兩搧就趕過了。But this demon could cover ninety thousand li with a single beat of his wings, and with two beats he overtook him.所以被他一把撾住，拿在手中，左右掙挫不得。Thus he was seized in one grasp and held fast in the demon's hand, and struggle as he might to left or right, he could not break free.欲思要走，莫能逃脫。He wished to flee, but there was no escaping.即使變化法遁法，又往來難行：變大些兒，他就放鬆了撾住；Even if he used transformation magic or escape spells, it was hard to get away either way: if he made himself larger, the demon simply loosened his grip a little;變小些兒，他又揝緊了撾住。if he made himself smaller, the demon tightened his grip.復拿了徑回城內，放了手，捽下塵埃，吩咐群妖，也照八戒、沙僧綑在一處。The demon carried him straight back into the city, let go of his hand, flung him down into the dust, and ordered the demon host to bind him in the same place as Bajie and Sha Seng.那老魔、二魔俱下來迎接，三個魔頭同上寶殿。The Old Demon and the Second Demon both came down to greet him, and the three demon chiefs together went up into the throne hall.噫！Ah!這一番倒不是綑住行者，分明是與他送行。This time, binding Xingzhe was not really binding him at all — it was plainly seeing him off on his journey.

行者见两个兄弟遭擒，他自家独力难撑，正是：好手不敌双拳，双拳难敌四手。他喊一声，把棍子隔开三个妖魔的兵器，纵觔斗驾云走了。三怪见行者驾觔斗时，即抖抖身，现了本像，扇开两翅，赶上大圣。你道他怎能赶上？当时如行者闹天宫，十万天兵也拿他不住者，以他会驾觔斗云，一去有十万八千里路，所以诸神不能赶上。这妖精扇一翅就有九万里，两扇就赶过了。所以被他一把挝住，拿在手中，左右挣挫不得。欲思要走，莫能逃脱。即使变化法遁法，又往来难行：变大些儿，他就放松了挝住；变小些儿，他又揝紧了挝住。复拿了径回城内，放了手，捽下尘埃，吩咐群妖，也照八戒、沙僧捆在一处。那老魔、二魔俱下来迎接，三个魔头同上宝殿。噫！这一番倒不是捆住行者，分明是与他送行。

此時有二更時候，眾怪一齊相見畢，把唐僧推下殿來。By now it was already the second watch; after the demons had finished greeting one another, they shoved Tang Seng down into the hall.那長老於燈光前，忽見三個徒弟都綑在地下，老師父伏於行者身邊，哭道：「徒弟啊，常時逢難，你卻在外運用神通，到那裡取救降魔；There in the lamplight, the elder suddenly saw his three disciples all bound on the ground; the old master bent down close to Xingzhe and wept, saying, "Disciple, whenever we met with disaster before, you were always outside working your divine powers, going off to fetch help and subdue demons;今番你亦遭擒，我貧僧怎麼得命？」八戒、沙僧聽見師父這般苦楚，便也一齊放聲痛哭。but this time you too have been captured — how am I, this poor monk, to survive?" When Bajie and Sha Seng heard the master lamenting so bitterly, they too burst out weeping aloud together.行者微微笑道：「師父放心，兄弟莫哭，憑他怎的，決然無傷。Xingzhe smiled faintly and said, "Master, set your mind at ease; brothers, do not weep. No matter what they do, we will certainly come to no harm.等那老魔安靜了，我們走路。」八戒道：「哥啊，又來搗鬼了。Once the Old Demon settles down and quiets, we'll be on our way." Bajie said, "Brother, here you go stirring up mischief again with your talk.麻繩綑住，鬆些兒還著水噴，想你這瘦人兒不覺，我這胖的遭瘟哩。We're bound tight with hemp rope, and even when it's loosened a bit they still douse it with water — I suppose you, being thin, don't feel it, but I, being fat, am suffering for it.不信，你看兩膊上，入肉已有二寸，如何脫身？」行者笑道：「莫說是麻繩綑的，就是碗粗的棕纜，只也當秋風過耳，何足罕哉？」If you don't believe me, look at my arms — the rope's already cut two inches into the flesh. How am I to get free?" Xingzhe laughed and said, "Don't even speak of hemp rope binding me — even a palm-fiber cable as thick as a bowl would be no more to me than an autumn breeze passing my ear. What is there to marvel at?"

此时有二更时候，众怪一齐相见毕，把唐僧推下殿来。那长老于灯光前，忽见三个徒弟都捆在地下，老师父伏于行者身边，哭道：「徒弟啊，常时逢难，你却在外运用神通，到那里取救降魔；今番你亦遭擒，我贫僧怎么得命？」八戒、沙僧听见师父这般苦楚，便也一齐放声痛哭。行者微微笑道：「师父放心，兄弟莫哭，凭他怎的，决然无伤。等那老魔安静了，我们走路。」八戒道：「哥啊，又来捣鬼了。麻绳捆住，松些儿还著水喷，想你这瘦人儿不觉，我这胖的遭瘟哩。不信，你看两膊上，入肉已有二寸，如何脱身？」行者笑道：「莫说是麻绳捆的，就是碗粗的棕缆，只也当秋风过耳，何足罕哉？」

師徒們正說處，只聞得那老魔道：「三賢弟有力量，有智謀，果成妙計，拿將唐僧來了。」叫：「小的們，著五個打水，七個刷鍋，十個燒火，二十個擡出鐵籠來，把那四個和尚蒸熟，我兄弟們受用；Just as master and disciples were talking, they heard the Old Demon say, "Worthy Third Brother, you have both strength and cunning — your excellent plan has truly succeeded, and you've brought Tang Seng here." He called out, "You underlings, have five of you fetch water, seven scour the pot, ten build up the fire, and twenty carry out the iron steamer cages — we'll steam these four monks until done, for us brothers to enjoy;各散一塊兒與小的們吃，也教他個個長生。」八戒聽見，戰兢兢的道：「哥哥，你聽，那妖精計較要蒸我們吃哩。」行者道：「不要怕，等我看他是雛兒妖精，是把勢妖精。」沙和尚哭道：「哥呀，且不要說寬話。and hand out a piece to each of the underlings too, so that every one of them may gain long life as well." When Bajie heard this, he said trembling, "Brother, listen — those demons are plotting to steam and eat us!" Xingzhe said, "Don't be afraid; let me see whether they're green amateur demons or seasoned veteran demons." Sha Monk wept and said, "Brother, please don't talk so lightly of this.如今已與閻王隔壁哩，且講甚麼『雛兒』、『把勢』？」說不了，又聽得二怪說：「豬八戒不好蒸。」八戒歡喜道：「阿彌陀佛！We're practically next door to King Yama now — what's the use of talking about 'green' or 'veteran'?" Before he had even finished speaking, they heard the Second Demon say, "Zhu Bajie won't steam well." Bajie said joyfully, "Amitabha Buddha!是那個積陰騭的說我不好蒸？」三怪道：「不好蒸，剝了皮蒸。」八戒慌了，厲聲喊道：「不要剝皮，粗自粗，湯響就爛了。」老怪道：「不好蒸的，安在底下一格。」行者笑道：「八戒莫怕，是雛兒，不是把勢。」沙僧道：「怎麼認得？」行者道：「大凡蒸東西，都從上邊起。Which kind soul earning himself some hidden merit said I don't steam well?" The Third Demon said, "If he doesn't steam well, then skin him and steam him." Bajie panicked and shouted loudly, "Don't skin me! Coarse as I am, once the broth starts bubbling I'll turn tender soon enough." The Old Demon said, "Whatever doesn't steam well, put it on the bottom tier." Xingzhe laughed and said, "Don't be afraid, Bajie — that means he's a green amateur, not a seasoned veteran." Sha Seng asked, "How can you tell?" Xingzhe said, "Generally speaking, when you steam something, the heat rises from the top.不好蒸的，安在上頭一格，多燒把火，圓了氣，就好了；Whatever doesn't steam easily should be placed on the top tier — burn a bit more fuel, let the steam build up fully, and it will cook through just fine;若安在底下，一住了氣，就燒半年也是不得氣上的。but if it's placed on the bottom, once the steam is blocked there, you could burn the fire for half a year and the steam still wouldn't rise properly.他說八戒不好蒸，安在底下，不是雛兒是甚的？」八戒道：「哥啊，依你說，就活活的弄殺人了。He says Bajie doesn't steam well, yet puts him on the bottom — if that's not the mark of a green amateur, what is?" Bajie said, "Brother, by your reasoning, they'll end up cooking me alive to death!他打緊見不上氣，擡開了，把我翻轉過來，再燒起火，弄得我兩邊俱熟，中間不夾生了？」Once they see the steam isn't rising properly, they'll surely lift me out, turn me over, and build up the fire again, so that both sides of me get cooked through and the middle won't be left raw!"

师徒们正说处，只闻得那老魔道：「三贤弟有力量，有智谋，果成妙计，拿将唐僧来了。」叫：「小的们，著五个打水，七个刷锅，十个烧火，二十个抬出铁笼来，把那四个和尚蒸熟，我兄弟们受用；各散一块儿与小的们吃，也教他个个长生。」八戒听见，战兢兢的道：「哥哥，你听，那妖精计较要蒸我们吃哩。」行者道：「不要怕，等我看他是雏儿妖精，是把势妖精。」沙和尚哭道：「哥呀，且不要说宽话。如今已与阎王隔壁哩，且讲甚么『雏儿』、『把势』？」说不了，又听得二怪说：「猪八戒不好蒸。」八戒欢喜道：「阿弥陀佛！是那个积阴骘的说我不好蒸？」三怪道：「不好蒸，剥了皮蒸。」八戒慌了，厉声喊道：「不要剥皮，粗自粗，汤响就烂了。」老怪道：「不好蒸的，安在底下一格。」行者笑道：「八戒莫怕，是雏儿，不是把势。」沙僧道：「怎么认得？」行者道：「大凡蒸东西，都从上边起。不好蒸的，安在上头一格，多烧把火，圆了气，就好了；若安在底下，一住了气，就烧半年也是不得气上的。他说八戒不好蒸，安在底下，不是雏儿是甚的？」八戒道：「哥啊，依你说，就活活的弄杀人了。他打紧见不上气，抬开了，把我翻转过来，再烧起火，弄得我两边俱熟，中间不夹生了？」

正講時，又見小妖來報：「湯滾了。」老怪傳令叫擡。Just as they were talking, a junior demon came to report, "The broth is boiling!" The Old Demon gave the order to carry them in.眾妖一齊上手，將八戒擡在底下一格，沙僧擡在二格。All the demons set to work together, carrying Bajie to the bottom tier and Sha Seng to the second tier.行者估著來擡他，他就脫身道：「此燈光前好做手腳。」拔下一根毫毛，吹口仙氣，叫：「變！」即變做一個行者，綑了麻繩。Reckoning that they were about to come carry him next, Xingzhe slipped free of his bonds, thinking, "Here in the lamplight is a good chance to work a trick." He plucked out a strand of hair, breathed a mouthful of magic breath onto it, and cried, "Change!" It at once became another Xingzhe, bound with hemp rope in his place.將真身出神，跳在半空裡，低頭看著。His true body then slipped free in spirit, leaping up into midair, where he lowered his head to watch.那群妖那知真假，見人就擡，把個假行者擡在上三格；The demon host, having no idea which was real and which was fake, simply carried off whoever they saw, and carried the fake Xingzhe up to the third tier;才將唐僧揪翻倒綑住，擡上第四格。then they dragged Tang Seng over, bound him down, and carried him up to the fourth tier.乾柴架起，烈火氣焰騰騰。Dry firewood was piled up beneath, and the fierce flames blazed up in roiling heat.大聖在雲端裡嗟嘆道：「我那八戒、沙僧，還捱得兩滾；The Great Sage, up among the clouds, sighed and said, "My Bajie and Sha Seng can still endure a couple of rounds of boiling;我那師父，只消一滾就爛。but my master will turn to mush after just one round of boiling.若不用法救他，頃刻喪矣。」If I don't use magic to save him, he'll be lost in an instant."

正讲时，又见小妖来报：「汤滚了。」老怪传令叫抬。众妖一齐上手，将八戒抬在底下一格，沙僧抬在二格。行者估著来抬他，他就脱身道：「此灯光前好做手脚。」拔下一根毫毛，吹口仙气，叫：「变！」即变做一个行者，捆了麻绳。将真身出神，跳在半空里，低头看著。那群妖那知真假，见人就抬，把个假行者抬在上三格；才将唐僧揪翻倒捆住，抬上第四格。干柴架起，烈火气焰腾腾。大圣在云端里嗟叹道：「我那八戒、沙僧，还挨得两滚；我那师父，只消一滚就烂。若不用法救他，顷刻丧矣。」

好行者，在空中捻著訣，念一聲「唵藍淨法界，乾元亨利貞」的咒語，拘喚得北海龍王早至。Splendid Xingzhe — up in the air he formed a magic sign with his fingers and recited the spell "Om, blue purifies the dharma-realm; Qian, Yuan, Heng, Li, Zhen," summoning the Dragon King of the North Sea, who arrived at once.只見那雲端裡一朵烏雲，應聲高叫道：「北海小龍敖順叩頭。」行者道：「請起，請起。There among the clouds appeared a mass of dark cloud, and a voice called out loudly in response, "This lesser dragon of the North Sea, Ao Shun, kowtows to you." Xingzhe said, "Rise, please rise.無事不敢相煩。I would not trouble you without good reason.今與唐師父到此，被毒魔拿住，上鐵籠蒸哩。I have come here with Master Tang, and he has been captured by vicious demons and put into an iron steamer cage to be cooked.你去與我護持護持，莫教蒸壞了。」龍王隨即將身變作一陣冷風，吹入鍋下，盤旋圍護，更沒火氣燒鍋，他三人方不損命。Go and give him some protection for me — don't let him be steamed to death." The Dragon King at once transformed his body into a gust of cold wind, blowing in beneath the pot, coiling and encircling it in protection, so that no trace of the fire's heat reached the pot, and thus the three of them came to no harm.

好行者，在空中捻著诀，念一声「唵蓝净法界，干元亨利贞」的咒语，拘唤得北海龙王早至。只见那云端里一朵乌云，应声高叫道：「北海小龙敖顺叩头。」行者道：「请起，请起。无事不敢相烦。今与唐师父到此，被毒魔拿住，上铁笼蒸哩。你去与我护持护持，莫教蒸坏了。」龙王随即将身变作一阵冷风，吹入锅下，盘旋围护，更没火气烧锅，他三人方不损命。

將有三更盡時，只聞得老魔發放道：「手下的，我等用計勞形，拿了唐僧四眾；As the third watch was nearly ending, they heard the Old Demon give out orders: "You underlings — we have exhausted ourselves in scheme and effort to capture the four members of Tang Seng's party;又因相送辛苦，四晝夜未曾得睡。and on top of that, escorting them here wore us out, so that for four days and nights we haven't had any sleep.今已綑在籠裡，料應難脫，汝等用心看守，著十個小妖輪流燒火，讓我們退宮，略略安寢。Now that they are bound inside the cages, they surely cannot escape. You are to keep careful watch, with ten junior demons taking turns tending the fire, while we withdraw to our chambers to rest a little.到五更天色將明，必然爛了，可安排下蒜泥鹽醋，請我們起來，空心受用。」眾妖各各遵命。By the fifth watch, when the sky is about to brighten, they will surely be cooked through — prepare garlic paste, salt, and vinegar, and wake us so we may rise and enjoy them on empty stomachs." Each of the demons obeyed the order.三個魔頭，卻各轉寢宮而去。The three demon chiefs then each returned to their own sleeping chambers.

将有三更尽时，只闻得老魔发放道：「手下的，我等用计劳形，拿了唐僧四众；又因相送辛苦，四昼夜未曾得睡。今已捆在笼里，料应难脱，汝等用心看守，著十个小妖轮流烧火，让我们退宫，略略安寝。到五更天色将明，必然烂了，可安排下蒜泥盐醋，请我们起来，空心受用。」众妖各各遵命。三个魔头，却各转寝宫而去。

行者在雲端裡明明聽著這等吩咐，卻低下雲頭，不聽見籠裡人聲。Xingzhe, up among the clouds, clearly heard these instructions, and lowered his cloud, but he could not hear any voices from within the cages.他想著：「火氣上騰，必然也熱，他們怎麼不怕，又無言語哼嗔？He thought to himself, "With the fire's heat rising, it must be hot in there too — why are they not afraid, and why is there no sound of complaint or groaning?莫敢是蒸死了？Could it be that they've already been steamed to death?等我近前再聽。」好大聖，踏著雲，搖身一變，變作一個黑蒼蠅兒，釘在鐵籠格外聽時，只聞得八戒在裡面道：「晦氣，晦氣，不知是悶氣蒸，又不知是出氣蒸哩。」沙僧道：「二哥，怎麼叫做『悶氣』、『出氣』？」八戒道：「悶氣蒸是蓋了籠頭，出氣蒸不蓋。」三藏在浮上一層應聲道：「徒弟，不曾蓋。」八戒道：「造化，今夜還不得死，這是出氣蒸了。」行者聽得他三人都說話，未曾傷命，便就飛了去，把個鐵籠蓋輕輕兒蓋上。Let me go closer and listen." Splendid Great Sage — treading on his cloud, he shook himself and changed into a black fly, and landed on the outside of the iron cage to listen; there he heard Bajie inside saying, "Rotten luck, rotten luck — I don't know if this is a 'smothered steam' or a 'vented steam.'" Sha Seng said, "Second Brother, what do you mean by 'smothered' and 'vented'?" Bajie said, "'Smothered steam' means the cage lid is covered; 'vented steam' means it isn't." Sanzang, on the top tier, called out in response, "Disciples, it hasn't been covered." Bajie said, "What luck — we won't die tonight after all, this is 'vented steam.'" When Xingzhe heard all three of them speaking, and knew they had not yet come to harm, he flew off at once and gently covered the iron cage lid over.三藏慌了道：「徒弟，蓋上了。」八戒道：「罷了，這個是悶氣蒸，今夜必是死了。」沙僧與長老嚶嚶的啼哭。Sanzang panicked and said, "Disciples, it's been covered!" Bajie said, "That's it then — this is 'smothered steam,' and tonight we're surely done for." Sha Seng and the elder began to whimper and weep softly.八戒道：「且不要哭，這一會燒火的換了班了。」沙僧道：「你怎麼知道？」八戒道：「早先擡上來時，正合我意：我有些兒寒濕氣的病，要他騰騰。Bajie said, "Don't cry yet — the fire-tenders must have just changed shifts." Sha Seng said, "How do you know that?" Bajie said, "Earlier, when they first carried me up, it suited me just fine — I have a touch of cold-damp illness, and I wanted the steam to warm me through.這會子反冷氣上來了。But just now, cold air started coming up instead.咦！Hey!燒火的長官，添上些柴便怎的？Officer in charge of the fire, what harm would it do to add a bit more firewood?要了你的哩？」Would it cost you something?"

行者在云端里明明听著这等吩咐，却低下云头，不听见笼里人声。他想著：「火气上腾，必然也热，他们怎么不怕，又无言语哼嗔？莫敢是蒸死了？等我近前再听。」好大圣，踏著云，摇身一变，变作一个黑苍蝇儿，钉在铁笼格外听时，只闻得八戒在里面道：「晦气，晦气，不知是闷气蒸，又不知是出气蒸哩。」沙僧道：「二哥，怎么叫做『闷气』、『出气』？」八戒道：「闷气蒸是盖了笼头，出气蒸不盖。」三藏在浮上一层应声道：「徒弟，不曾盖。」八戒道：「造化，今夜还不得死，这是出气蒸了。」行者听得他三人都说话，未曾伤命，便就飞了去，把个铁笼盖轻轻儿盖上。三藏慌了道：「徒弟，盖上了。」八戒道：「罢了，这个是闷气蒸，今夜必是死了。」沙僧与长老嘤嘤的啼哭。八戒道：「且不要哭，这一会烧火的换了班了。」沙僧道：「你怎么知道？」八戒道：「早先抬上来时，正合我意：我有些儿寒湿气的病，要他腾腾。这会子反冷气上来了。咦！烧火的长官，添上些柴便怎的？要了你的哩？」

行者聽見，忍不住暗笑道：「這個夯貨，冷還好捱，若熱就要傷命。When Xingzhe heard this, he could not help laughing secretly to himself: "This dolt — cold he can still bear, but if it turns hot, it'll cost him his life.再說兩遭，一定走了風了，快早救他。If he says a couple more things like that, he's bound to give the game away — I'd better save them quickly.且住，要救他須是要現本相。Wait a moment — to save them I would have to reveal my true form.假如現了，這十個燒火的看見，一齊亂喊，驚動老怪，卻不又費事？But if I do, and these ten fire-tenders see me, they'll all shout in alarm together and rouse the old demons — wouldn't that just make more trouble?等我先送他個法兒。」忽想起：「我當初做大聖時，曾在北天門與護國天王猜枚耍子，贏得他瞌睡蟲兒，還有幾個，送了他罷。」即往腰間順帶裡摸摸，還有十二個。「送他十個，還留兩個做種。」即將蟲兒拋了去，散在十個小妖臉上，鑽入鼻孔，漸漸打盹，都睡倒了。Let me first give them a little something." Suddenly he remembered: "Back when I was the Great Sage, I once played a guessing game with the Heaven-Protecting King at the North Heavenly Gate, and won some sleep-inducing insects off him — I still have a few left; let me give them away." He felt about in the pouch at his waist and found he still had twelve. "I'll give ten of them and keep two as seed stock." He then tossed the insects out, scattering them onto the faces of the ten junior demons; the insects burrowed into their nostrils, and one by one the demons grew drowsy and fell fast asleep.只有一個拿火叉的睡不穩，揉頭搓臉，把鼻子左捏右捏，不住的打噴嚏。Only one demon holding a fire-fork could not settle into sleep; he rubbed his head and face, pinched his nose this way and that, and kept on sneezing.行者道：「這廝曉得勾當了，我再與他個雙㮇燈。」又將一個蟲兒拋在他臉上。「兩個蟲兒，左進右出，右出左進，諒有一個安住。」那小妖兩三個大啊欠，把腰伸一伸，丟了火叉，也撲的睡倒，再不翻身。Xingzhe said, "This fellow senses something's up — I'll give him a double dose for good measure." He tossed another insect onto the demon's face. "With two insects, one going in on the left and out on the right, or in on the right and out on the left, surely at least one will settle in and stay." Sure enough, the junior demon gave two or three great yawns, stretched his back, dropped his fire-fork, and flopped down asleep, never to stir again.

行者听见，忍不住暗笑道：「这个夯货，冷还好挨，若热就要伤命。再说两遭，一定走了风了，快早救他。且住，要救他须是要现本相。假如现了，这十个烧火的看见，一齐乱喊，惊动老怪，却不又费事？等我先送他个法儿。」忽想起：「我当初做大圣时，曾在北天门与护国天王猜枚耍子，赢得他瞌睡虫儿，还有几个，送了他罢。」即往腰间顺带里摸摸，还有十二个。「送他十个，还留两个做种。」即将虫儿抛了去，散在十个小妖脸上，钻入鼻孔，渐渐打盹，都睡倒了。只有一个拿火叉的睡不稳，揉头搓脸，把鼻子左捏右捏，不住的打喷嚏。行者道：「这厮晓得勾当了，我再与他个双㮇灯。」又将一个虫儿抛在他脸上。「两个虫儿，左进右出，右出左进，谅有一个安住。」那小妖两三个大啊欠，把腰伸一伸，丢了火叉，也扑的睡倒，再不翻身。

行者道：「這法兒真是妙而且靈。」即現原身，走近前，叫聲：「師父。」唐僧聽見道：「悟空，救我啊。」沙僧道：「哥哥，你在外面叫哩？」行者道：「我不在外面，好和你們在裡邊受罪？」八戒道：「哥啊，溜撒的溜了，我們都是頂缸的，在此受悶氣哩。」行者笑道：「獃子莫嚷，我來救你。」八戒道：「哥啊，救便要脫根救，莫又要復蒸籠。」行者卻揭開籠頭，解了師父，將假變的毫毛抖了一抖，收上身來；Xingzhe said, "This trick is truly marvelous and effective." He then revealed his true form, walked up close, and called out, "Master!" Tang Seng, hearing him, said, "Wukong, save me!" Sha Seng said, "Brother, is that you calling from outside?" Xingzhe said, "If I weren't outside, would I be in there suffering along with you?" Bajie said, "Brother, you slipped away scot-free, while we're the ones left holding the bag, suffering this smothering steam in here." Xingzhe laughed and said, "Don't shout, you fool — I've come to save you." Bajie said, "Brother, if you're going to save us, save us for good — don't go putting us back in the steamer again." Xingzhe then lifted off the cage lid, freed the master, shook out the transformed hair that had taken his place, and took it back into his body;又一層層放了沙僧，放了八戒。then, tier by tier, he freed Sha Seng and freed Bajie as well.那獃子才解了，巴不得就要跑。The instant the fool was untied, he could hardly wait to run off.行者道：「莫忙，莫忙。」卻又念聲咒語，發放了龍神，才對八戒道：「我們這去到西天，還有高山峻嶺。Xingzhe said, "Don't rush, don't rush." He then recited a spell to dismiss the dragon spirit, and only after that said to Bajie, "On our way ahead to the Western Heaven, there are still high mountains and steep ridges to cross.師父沒腳力難行，等我還將馬來。The master has no strength in his legs and cannot travel on foot; let me go fetch the horse."

行者道：「这法儿真是妙而且灵。」即现原身，走近前，叫声：「师父。」唐僧听见道：「悟空，救我啊。」沙僧道：「哥哥，你在外面叫哩？」行者道：「我不在外面，好和你们在里边受罪？」八戒道：「哥啊，溜撒的溜了，我们都是顶缸的，在此受闷气哩。」行者笑道：「呆子莫嚷，我来救你。」八戒道：「哥啊，救便要脱根救，莫又要复蒸笼。」行者却揭开笼头，解了师父，将假变的毫毛抖了一抖，收上身来；又一层层放了沙僧，放了八戒。那呆子才解了，巴不得就要跑。行者道：「莫忙，莫忙。」却又念声咒语，发放了龙神，才对八戒道：「我们这去到西天，还有高山峻岭。师父没脚力难行，等我还将马来。

你看他輕手輕腳，走到金鑾殿下，見那些大小群妖俱睡著了。Watch him now, moving light-footed and quiet, as he walked to beneath the Golden Throne Hall, where he saw the whole host of demons, great and small, all fast asleep.卻解了韁繩，更不驚動。He untied the reins without disturbing anyone at all.那馬原是龍馬，若是生人，飛踢兩腳，便嘶幾聲。That horse was originally a dragon-horse; had a stranger approached, it would have kicked out twice and neighed loudly.行者曾養過馬，授弼馬溫之官，又是自家一夥，所以不跳不叫。But Xingzhe had once tended horses, having held the post of Bimawen, and besides, they were of the same company, so the horse neither reared nor cried out.悄悄的牽來，束緊了肚帶，扣備停當，請師父上馬。He quietly led it out, cinched the girth tight, made everything ready, and invited the master to mount.長老戰兢兢的騎上，也就要走。The elder, trembling, climbed on and was about to set off.行者道：「也且莫忙。Xingzhe said, "Don't be in such a hurry either.我們西去還有國王，須要關文，方才去得；On our way west there are still kingdoms to pass through, and we need our travel rescript, or we won't be able to go on;不然，將甚執照？otherwise, what proof of passage would we have?等我還去尋行李來。」唐僧道：「我記得進門時，眾怪將行李放在金殿左手下，擔兒也在那一邊。」行者道：「我曉得了。」即抽身跳在寶殿尋時，忽見光彩飄颻。Let me go find our luggage." Tang Seng said, "I recall that when we were brought in, the demons set the luggage down to the left of the golden hall, and the carrying-pole is over there too." Xingzhe said, "I understand." He at once slipped off and leapt into the throne hall to search, when suddenly he saw a radiant glow shimmering.行者知是行李。Xingzhe knew at once it was the luggage.怎麼就知？How did he know so at once?以唐僧的錦襴袈裟上有夜明珠，故此放光。Because Tang Seng's brocade cassock had night-shining pearls upon it, and that was what gave off the glow.急到前，見擔兒原封未動，連忙拿了去，付與沙僧挑著。He hurried over and found the pole and bundles exactly as they had been, untouched; he quickly picked them up and handed them to Sha Seng to carry on his shoulder.

你看他轻手轻脚，走到金銮殿下，见那些大小群妖俱睡著了。却解了缰绳，更不惊动。那马原是龙马，若是生人，飞踢两脚，便嘶几声。行者曾养过马，授弼马温之官，又是自家一伙，所以不跳不叫。悄悄的牵来，束紧了肚带，扣备停当，请师父上马。长老战兢兢的骑上，也就要走。行者道：「也且莫忙。我们西去还有国王，须要关文，方才去得；不然，将甚执照？等我还去寻行李来。」唐僧道：「我记得进门时，众怪将行李放在金殿左手下，担儿也在那一边。」行者道：「我晓得了。」即抽身跳在宝殿寻时，忽见光彩飘飖。行者知是行李。怎么就知？以唐僧的锦襕袈裟上有夜明珠，故此放光。急到前，见担儿原封未动，连忙拿了去，付与沙僧挑著。

八戒牽著馬，他引了路，徑奔正陽門。Bajie led the horse, while Xingzhe guided the way, heading straight for the Zhengyang Gate.只聽得梆鈴亂響，門上有鎖，鎖上貼了封皮。There they heard watch-clappers and bells sounding busily, and found the gate locked, with a paper seal pasted over the lock.行者道：「這等防守，如何去得？」八戒道：「後門裡去罷。」行者引路，徑奔後門，後宰門外也有梆鈴之聲，門上也有封鎖。「卻怎生是好？Xingzhe said, "With such a guard kept, how can we possibly get through?" Bajie said, "Let's go by the back gate instead." Xingzhe led the way straight to the rear gate, but outside the Houzai Gate there was likewise the sound of clappers and bells, and the gate too was sealed and locked. "Whatever shall we do?我這一番，若不為唐僧是個凡體，我三人不管怎的，也駕雲弄風走了。This time, if it weren't that Tang Seng has a mortal body, the three of us could simply ride the clouds and command the wind to get away, no matter what.只為唐僧未超三界外，見在五行中，一身都是父母濁骨，所以不得昇駕，難逃。」八戒道：「哥哥，不消商量，我們到那沒梆鈴、不防衛處，撮著師父爬過牆去罷。」行者笑道：「這個不好。But because Tang Seng has not yet risen beyond the Three Realms, and still exists within the Five Elements, his whole body being the base bones given by his parents, he cannot rise up on a cloud, and so escape is difficult." Bajie said, "Brother, there's no need to discuss it further — let's just get to some spot without clappers or guards, and hoist the master over the wall." Xingzhe laughed and said, "That won't do.此時無奈，撮他過去；If we're helpless and simply hoist him over now,到取經回來，你這獃子口敞，延地裡就對人說，我們是爬牆頭的和尚了。」八戒道：「此時也顧不得行檢，且逃命去罷。」行者也沒奈何，只得依他，到那淨牆邊，算計爬出。then when we return from fetching the scriptures, you, you loose-mouthed fool, will go around blabbing everywhere that we were monks who climbed over walls." Bajie said, "At a time like this, we can't worry about propriety — let's just save our lives first." Xingzhe, having no better choice, had to go along with him, and they went to a stretch of bare wall, planning to climb over.

八戒牵著马，他引了路，径奔正阳门。只听得梆铃乱响，门上有锁，锁上贴了封皮。行者道：「这等防守，如何去得？」八戒道：「后门里去罢。」行者引路，径奔后门，后宰门外也有梆铃之声，门上也有封锁。「却怎生是好？我这一番，若不为唐僧是个凡体，我三人不管怎的，也驾云弄风走了。只为唐僧未超三界外，见在五行中，一身都是父母浊骨，所以不得升驾，难逃。」八戒道：「哥哥，不消商量，我们到那没梆铃、不防卫处，撮著师父爬过墙去罢。」行者笑道：「这个不好。此时无奈，撮他过去；到取经回来，你这呆子口敞，延地里就对人说，我们是爬墙头的和尚了。」八戒道：「此时也顾不得行检，且逃命去罢。」行者也没奈何，只得依他，到那净墙边，算计爬出。

噫！Ah!有這般事，也是三藏災星未脫。That such a thing should happen shows that Sanzang's star of calamity had not yet run its course.那三個魔頭在宮中正睡，忽然驚覺，說走了唐僧，一個個披衣忙起，急登寶殿。The three demon chiefs, sleeping soundly in the palace, suddenly woke with a start at word that Tang Seng had escaped; one by one they threw on their robes and hurried up, rushing to the throne hall.問曰：「唐僧蒸了幾滾了？」那些燒火的小妖已是有睡魔蟲，都睡著了，就是打也莫想打得一個醒來。They asked, "How many rounds of boiling has Tang Seng had?" But the junior demons tending the fire, under the spell of the sleep-inducing insects, were all fast asleep, and not even a beating could have roused a single one of them.其餘沒執事的，驚醒幾個，冒冒失失的答應道：「七、七、七、七滾了。」急跑近鍋邊，只見籠格子亂丟在地下，燒火的還都睡著。Among the rest, who had no fixed duty, a few were startled awake, and answered rashly and in confusion, "Seven — seven, seven, seven rounds!" They rushed hurriedly to the side of the pot, only to find the cage tiers scattered in disarray on the ground, while the fire-tenders were still all sound asleep.慌得又來報道：「大王，走、走、走、走了。」三個魔頭都下殿，近鍋前仔細看時，果見那籠格子亂丟在地下，湯鍋盡冷，火腳俱無。In a panic they rushed back to report, "Great King, he's gone — gone, gone, gone!" All three demon chiefs came down from the hall and looked closely by the pot, and indeed found the cage tiers scattered on the ground, the broth in the pot stone cold, and not a trace of fire left beneath it.那燒火的俱呼呼鼾睡如泥。The fire-tenders were all snoring away, dead to the world like mud.慌得眾怪一齊吶喊，都叫：「快拿唐僧！In alarm the whole host of demons shouted together, all crying, "Quick, seize Tang Seng!快拿唐僧！」這一片喊聲振起，把些前前後後、大大小小妖精，都驚起來，刀槍簇擁，至正陽門下。Quick, seize Tang Seng!" This burst of shouting rose up and startled awake all the demons everywhere, front and back, great and small, who came crowding together with swords and spears to beneath the Zhengyang Gate.見那封鎖不動，梆鈴不絕。They found the lock and seal undisturbed, and the clappers and bells still sounding without pause.問外邊巡夜的道：「唐僧從那裡走了？」俱道：「不曾走出人來。」急趕至後宰門，封鎖、梆鈴，一如前門。They asked the night-watch outside, "Which way did Tang Seng go?" All replied, "No one has come out this way." They hurried on to the Houzai Gate, where the lock, seal, clappers, and bells were all just as at the front gate.復亂搶搶的燈籠火把，熯天通紅，就如白日，卻明明的照見他四眾爬牆哩。Then, in a chaotic scramble, lanterns and torches blazed up, turning the sky red as if it were broad daylight, and by this light they clearly saw the four of them climbing over the wall.老魔趕近，喝聲：「那裡走？」那長老諕得腳軟觔麻，跌下牆來，被老魔拿住。The Old Demon rushed up close and bellowed, "Where do you think you're going?" The elder, terrified, went weak in the legs and numb in the sinews, fell down off the wall, and was captured by the Old Demon.二魔捉了沙僧，三魔擒倒八戒，眾妖搶了行李、白馬，只是走了行者。The Second Demon King seized Sha Seng, the Third Demon King captured Bajie, and the demon host snatched the baggage and the white horse — only Xingzhe got away.那八戒口裡嘓嘓噥噥的報怨行者道：「天殺的，我說要救便脫根救，如今卻又復籠蒸了。」Bajie, muttering and grumbling under his breath, complained of Xingzhe: 'Heaven strike him dead — I said if he was going to save us, he should save us clean through, and now here we are, back in the steamer again.'

噫！有这般事，也是三藏灾星未脱。那三个魔头在宫中正睡，忽然惊觉，说走了唐僧，一个个披衣忙起，急登宝殿。问曰：「唐僧蒸了几滚了？」那些烧火的小妖已是有睡魔虫，都睡著了，就是打也莫想打得一个醒来。其余没执事的，惊醒几个，冒冒失失的答应道：「七、七、七、七滚了。」急跑近锅边，只见笼格子乱丢在地下，烧火的还都睡著。慌得又来报道：「大王，走、走、走、走了。」三个魔头都下殿，近锅前仔细看时，果见那笼格子乱丢在地下，汤锅尽冷，火脚俱无。那烧火的俱呼呼鼾睡如泥。慌得众怪一齐呐喊，都叫：「快拿唐僧！快拿唐僧！」这一片喊声振起，把些前前后后、大大小小妖精，都惊起来，刀枪簇拥，至正阳门下。见那封锁不动，梆铃不绝。问外边巡夜的道：「唐僧从那里走了？」俱道：「不曾走出人来。」急赶至后宰门，封锁、梆铃，一如前门。复乱抢抢的灯笼火把，熯天通红，就如白日，却明明的照见他四众爬墙哩。老魔赶近，喝声：「那里走？」那长老諕得脚软觔麻，跌下墙来，被老魔拿住。二魔捉了沙僧，三魔擒倒八戒，众妖抢了行李、白马，只是走了行者。那八戒口里啯啯哝哝的报怨行者道：「天杀的，我说要救便脱根救，如今却又复笼蒸了。」

眾魔把唐僧擒至殿上，卻不蒸了。The demons carried Tang Seng up to the hall, but did not steam him after all.二怪吩咐把八戒綁在殿前簷柱上，三怪吩咐把沙僧綁在殿後簷柱上；The Second Fiend ordered Bajie bound to the eaves-pillar before the hall, and the Third Fiend ordered Sha Seng bound to the eaves-pillar behind the hall;惟老魔把唐僧抱住不放。only the Old Demon held Tang Seng in his arms and would not let go.三怪道：「大哥，你抱住他怎的？The Third Fiend said, 'Elder brother, why do you hold onto him like that?終不然就活吃？Surely you're not going to eat him alive?卻也沒些趣味。That would be no fun at all.此物比不得那愚夫俗子，拿了可以當飯；This is no ordinary foolish mortal, to be caught and eaten as a mere meal;此是上邦稀奇之物，必須待天陰閑暇之時，拿他出來，整製精潔，猜枚行令，細吹細打的吃方可。」老魔笑道：「賢弟之言雖當，但孫行者又要來偷哩。」三魔道：「我這皇宮裡面有一座錦香亭子，亭子內有一個鐵櫃。He is a rare delicacy from the Great Tang, and we must wait for a cloudy, idle day, then bring him out, prepare him neatly and cleanly, guess-fingers and play drinking games, and eat him to the soft strains of pipes and drums — only then will it do.' The Old Demon laughed and said, 'What our worthy brother says is sound enough, but that Sun Wukong will come again to steal him.' The Third Fiend said, 'Inside this palace of mine there is a pavilion called Brocade Fragrance Pavilion, and inside the pavilion there is an iron cabinet.依著我，把唐僧藏在櫃裡，關了亭子；Follow my plan: hide Tang Seng inside the cabinet, and shut up the pavilion;卻傳出謠言，說唐僧已被我們夾生吃了，令小妖滿城講說。then spread a rumor that we have already eaten Tang Seng half-raw, and have the little demons repeat it all through the city.那行者必然來探聽消息，若聽見這話，他必死心塌地而去。Xingzhe is sure to come sniffing around for news, and if he hears this, he will surely give up all hope and go away.待三五日不來攪擾，卻拿出來，慢慢受用。Once three or five days pass without him coming to make trouble, we can bring him out and enjoy him at our leisure.如何？」老怪、二怪俱大喜道：「是是是，兄弟說得有理。」可憐把個唐僧連夜拿將進去，藏在櫃中，閉了亭子；How's that?' The Old Fiend and the Second Fiend were both greatly delighted and said, 'Yes, yes, our brother speaks with reason.' Poor Tang Seng — that very night they carried him inside, hid him in the cabinet, and shut up the pavilion;傳出謠言，滿城裡都亂講不題。they spread the rumor abroad, and the whole city buzzed with it — but no more of that for now.

众魔把唐僧擒至殿上，却不蒸了。二怪吩咐把八戒绑在殿前簷柱上，三怪吩咐把沙僧绑在殿后簷柱上；惟老魔把唐僧抱住不放。三怪道：「大哥，你抱住他怎的？终不然就活吃？却也没些趣味。此物比不得那愚夫俗子，拿了可以当饭；此是上邦稀奇之物，必须待天阴闲暇之时，拿他出来，整制精洁，猜枚行令，细吹细打的吃方可。」老魔笑道：「贤弟之言虽当，但孙行者又要来偷哩。」三魔道：「我这皇宫里面有一座锦香亭子，亭子内有一个铁柜。依著我，把唐僧藏在柜里，关了亭子；却传出谣言，说唐僧已被我们夹生吃了，令小妖满城讲说。那行者必然来探听消息，若听见这话，他必死心塌地而去。待三五日不来搅扰，却拿出来，慢慢受用。如何？」老怪、二怪俱大喜道：「是是是，兄弟说得有理。」可怜把个唐僧连夜拿将进去，藏在柜中，闭了亭子；传出谣言，满城里都乱讲不题。

卻說行者自夜半顧不得唐僧，駕雲走脫。Now to tell of Xingzhe: since midnight, unable to look after Tang Seng, he had mounted the clouds and fled.徑至獅駝洞裡，一路棍，把那萬數小妖盡情勦絕。He went straight to Shituo Cave, and with blows of his rod all the way, wiped out the tens of thousands of little demons utterly.急回來，東方日出。He hurried back, and by then the sun was rising in the east.到城邊，不敢叫戰。Reaching the edge of the city, he dared not call out a challenge.正是：單絲不線，孤掌難鳴。Truly: a single thread makes no cord, a lone palm claps no sound.他落下雲頭，搖身一變，變作個小妖兒，演入門裡，大街小巷，緝訪消息。He brought his cloud down, shook himself, and transformed into a little demon, then slipped in through the gate, roaming the main streets and side alleys to ferret out news.滿城裡俱道：唐僧被大王夾生兒連夜吃了。All through the city people were saying: the Great King had eaten Tang Seng half-raw that very night.前前後後，都是這等說。Everywhere he asked, front and back, it was all the same story.行者著實心焦。Xingzhe's heart burned with anxiety.行至金鑾殿前觀看，那裡邊有許多精靈，都戴著皮金帽子，穿著黃布直身，手拿著紅漆棍，腰掛著象牙牌，一往一來，不住的亂走。Walking up before the Golden Chariot Hall to look, he saw many spirits there, all wearing gilt-leather caps and yellow cloth robes, holding red-lacquered staves in hand, ivory tablets hung at their waists, going back and forth, walking about ceaselessly.行者暗想道：「此必是穿宮的妖怪，就變做這個模樣，進去打聽打聽。」Xingzhe thought to himself secretly: 'These must be the demons who patrol the palace — I'll transform into just this shape and go in to listen around a bit.'

却说行者自夜半顾不得唐僧，驾云走脱。径至狮驼洞里，一路棍，把那万数小妖尽情勦绝。急回来，东方日出。到城边，不敢叫战。正是：单丝不线，孤掌难鸣。他落下云头，摇身一变，变作个小妖儿，演入门里，大街小巷，缉访消息。满城里俱道：唐僧被大王夹生儿连夜吃了。前前后后，都是这等说。行者著实心焦。行至金銮殿前观看，那里边有许多精灵，都戴著皮金帽子，穿著黄布直身，手拿著红漆棍，腰挂著象牙牌，一往一来，不住的乱走。行者暗想道：「此必是穿宫的妖怪，就变做这个模样，进去打听打听。」

好大聖，果然變得一般無二，混入金門。Splendid Great Sage — he transformed himself into an exact likeness, and mixed right in through the golden gate.正走處，只見八戒綁在殿前柱上哼哩。Just as he was walking along, he saw Bajie tied to the pillar before the hall, groaning.行者近前，叫聲：「悟能。」那獃子認得聲音，道：「師兄，你來了？Xingzhe went up close and called softly, 'Wuneng.' The fool recognized the voice and said, 'Elder brother, you've come?救我一救。」行者道：「我救你。Save me, save me.' Xingzhe said, 'I will save you.你可知師父在那裡？」八戒道：「師父沒了，昨夜被妖精夾生兒吃了。」行者聞言，忽失聲淚似泉湧。Do you know where Master is?' Bajie said, 'Master is gone — last night the demons ate him half-raw.' When Xingzhe heard this, he suddenly cried out and his tears gushed like a spring.八戒道：「哥哥莫哭，我也是聽得小妖亂講，未曾眼見。Bajie said, 'Brother, don't cry — I only heard it from the little demons chattering about it, I never saw it with my own eyes.你休誤了，再去尋問尋問。」這行者卻才收淚，又往裡面找尋。Don't be misled by it — go and ask around some more.' Only then did Xingzhe hold back his tears, and went further inside to search.忽見沙僧綁在後簷柱上，即近前摸著他胸脯子叫道：「悟淨。」沙僧也識得聲音，道：「師兄，你變化進來了？Suddenly he saw Sha Seng tied to the rear eaves-pillar, and went up at once, touching his chest and calling, 'Wujing.' Sha Seng too recognized the voice and said, 'Elder brother, you've transformed yourself and come in?救我，救我。」行者道：「救你容易，你可知師父在那裡？」沙僧滴淚道：「哥啊，師父被妖精等不得蒸，就夾生兒吃了。」Save me, save me.' Xingzhe said, 'Saving you is easy enough — do you know where Master is?' Sha Seng said, tears falling, 'Brother, the demons couldn't even wait to steam Master — they ate him half-raw.'

好大圣，果然变得一般无二，混入金门。正走处，只见八戒绑在殿前柱上哼哩。行者近前，叫声：「悟能。」那呆子认得声音，道：「师兄，你来了？救我一救。」行者道：「我救你。你可知师父在那里？」八戒道：「师父没了，昨夜被妖精夹生儿吃了。」行者闻言，忽失声泪似泉涌。八戒道：「哥哥莫哭，我也是听得小妖乱讲，未曾眼见。你休误了，再去寻问寻问。」这行者却才收泪，又往里面找寻。忽见沙僧绑在后簷柱上，即近前摸著他胸脯子叫道：「悟净。」沙僧也识得声音，道：「师兄，你变化进来了？救我，救我。」行者道：「救你容易，你可知师父在那里？」沙僧滴泪道：「哥啊，师父被妖精等不得蒸，就夹生儿吃了。」

大聖聽得兩個言語相同，心如刀攪，淚似水流。When the Great Sage heard the two of them say the same thing, his heart felt as if churned by a knife, and his tears flowed like water.急縱身望空跳起，且不救八戒、沙僧，回至城東山上，按落雲頭，放聲大哭，叫道：「師父啊：He sprang up at once into the air, and without stopping to save Bajie and Sha Seng, went back to the hill east of the city, brought his cloud down, and wept aloud, crying, 'Master, oh Master!'

大圣听得两个言语相同，心如刀搅，泪似水流。急纵身望空跳起，且不救八戒、沙僧，回至城东山上，按落云头，放声大哭，叫道：「师父啊：

行者悽悽慘慘的自思自忖，以心問心道：「這都是我佛如來坐在那極樂之境，沒得事幹，弄了那三藏之經。Xingzhe, in bitter grief, thought it over to himself, questioning his own heart: 'This is all because our Buddha Tathagata, sitting there in his Land of Ultimate Bliss with nothing to do, made up those Three Baskets of scriptures.若果有心勸善，理當送上東土，卻不是個萬古流傳？If he truly meant to urge people toward goodness, he ought by rights to have sent them to the Eastern Land himself — would that not have been handed down for ten thousand ages?只是捨不得送去，卻教我等來取。But instead he could not bear to part with them, and so had us come to fetch them.怎知道苦歷千山，今朝到此喪命？Who would have thought that after suffering through a thousand mountains, today it should end in death here?罷罷罷，老孫且駕個觔斗雲，去見如來，備言前事。Enough, enough, enough! Old Sun will mount his somersault cloud and go see the Tathagata, and lay the whole matter before him.若肯把經與我送上東土，一則傳揚善果，二則了我等心願；If he is willing to send the scriptures on to the Eastern Land with me, then first, the fruits of goodness will be spread abroad, and second, our own wishes will be fulfilled;若不肯與我，教他把鬆箍兒咒念念，退下這個箍子，交還與他，老孫還歸本洞，稱王道寡，耍子兒去罷。」and if he will not grant this to me, then let him recite the Loosening-the-Fillet spell, take this band off my head, and I'll hand it back to him — old Sun will return to his own cave, call himself king, and go off to enjoy himself.'

行者凄凄惨惨的自思自忖，以心问心道：「这都是我佛如来坐在那极乐之境，没得事干，弄了那三藏之经。若果有心劝善，理当送上东土，却不是个万古流传？只是舍不得送去，却教我等来取。怎知道苦历千山，今朝到此丧命？罢罢罢，老孙且驾个觔斗云，去见如来，备言前事。若肯把经与我送上东土，一则传扬善果，二则了我等心愿；若不肯与我，教他把松箍儿咒念念，退下这个箍子，交还与他，老孙还归本洞，称王道寡，耍子儿去罢。」

好大聖，急翻身，駕起觔斗雲，徑投天竺，那裡消一個時辰，早望見靈山不遠。Splendid Great Sage — he flipped over at once, mounted his somersault cloud, and headed straight for India; before even an hour had passed, he could already see Vulture Peak was not far off.須臾間，按落雲頭，直至鷲峰之下。In an instant, he brought his cloud down, right to the foot of Vulture Peak.忽擡頭，見四大金剛擋住道：「那裡走？」行者施禮道：「有事要見如來。」當頭又有崑崙山金霞嶺不壞尊王永住金剛喝道：「這猢猻甚是粗狂。Suddenly looking up, he saw the Four Great Vajra Guardians blocking his way, saying, 'Where do you think you're going?' Xingzhe bowed and said, 'I have business — I must see the Tathagata.' At the head of them, the Vajra Guardian Yongzhu the Indestructible Honored King, of Golden Cloud Ridge on Mount Kunlun, shouted, 'This monkey is altogether too coarse and wild.前者大困牛魔，我等為汝努力，今日面見，全不為禮。Last time, when the Bull Demon had you sorely beset, we all exerted ourselves on your behalf, yet today, coming to see us, you show not the least courtesy.有事且待先奏，奉召方行。If you have business, wait until it has first been reported, and go in only once you are summoned.這裡比南天門不同，教你進去出來，兩邊亂走？This place is not like the Southern Gate of Heaven, where you may go in and out and wander about on either side as you please.咄！Bah!還不靠開。」那大聖正是煩惱處，又遭此搶白，氣得哮吼如雷，忍不住大呼小叫，早驚動如來。Stand back!' The Great Sage, already in the depths of his misery, met with this rebuke on top of it, and grew so furious he roared like thunder, unable to stop himself from shouting loudly — and this soon startled the Tathagata.

好大圣，急翻身，驾起觔斗云，径投天竺，那里消一个时辰，早望见灵山不远。须臾间，按落云头，直至鹫峰之下。忽抬头，见四大金刚挡住道：「那里走？」行者施礼道：「有事要见如来。」当头又有昆仑山金霞岭不坏尊王永住金刚喝道：「这猢狲甚是粗狂。前者大困牛魔，我等为汝努力，今日面见，全不为礼。有事且待先奏，奉召方行。这里比南天门不同，教你进去出来，两边乱走？咄！还不靠开。」那大圣正是烦恼处，又遭此抢白，气得哮吼如雷，忍不住大呼小叫，早惊动如来。

如來佛祖正端坐在九品寶蓮臺上，與十八尊輪世的阿羅漢講經，即開口道：「孫悟空來了，汝等出去接待接待。」大眾阿羅遵佛旨，兩路幢幡寶蓋，即出山門應聲道：「孫大聖，如來有旨相喚哩。」那山門口四大金剛卻才閃開路，讓行者前進。The Buddha Tathagata was sitting composed upon his Nine-Ranked Jeweled Lotus Throne, expounding the scriptures to the Eighteen Arhats of the revolving ages, and now he spoke, saying, 'Sun Wukong has arrived — go out, all of you, and receive him properly.' The assembled Arhats, obeying the Buddha's command, in two lines with banners and jeweled canopies, went out of the mountain gate at once and called out, 'Great Sage Sun, the Tathagata has an order summoning you.' Only then did the Four Great Vajra Guardians at the mountain gate step aside and let Xingzhe pass through.眾阿羅引至寶蓮臺下，見如來倒身下拜，兩淚悲啼。The Arhats led him to beneath the Jeweled Lotus Throne, where he saw the Tathagata, threw himself down in a bow, and wept bitterly, tears streaming.如來道：「悟空，有何事這等悲啼？」行者道：「弟子屢蒙教訓之恩，託庇在佛爺爺之門下。The Tathagata said, 'Wukong, what matter could bring you to weep so bitterly?' Xingzhe said, 'Your disciple has repeatedly received the grace of your instruction, and has taken shelter under the gate of Buddha, my grandfather.自歸正果，保護唐僧，拜為師範，一路上苦不可言。Since turning to the true fruit, I have escorted Tang Seng, revering him as my teacher, and along the way have suffered hardships beyond telling.今至獅駝山獅駝洞、獅駝城，有三個毒魔，乃獅王、象王、大鵬，把我師父捉將去，連弟子一概遭迍，都綑在蒸籠裡，受湯火之災。Now, on reaching Shituo Mountain, Shituo Cave, and Shituo City, three venomous demons — a Lion King, an Elephant King, and a Great Roc — seized my master, and your disciple too fell into disaster along with him; we were all bound and put into steamers, to suffer the calamity of boiling water and fire.幸弟子脫逃，喚龍王救免。Fortunately your disciple escaped, and summoned the Dragon Kings to save us from it.是夜偷出師等，不料災星難脫，復又擒回。That night I stole master and the others out, but unexpectedly the star of disaster proved impossible to escape, and we were seized and brought back again.及至天明，入城打聽，叵耐那魔十分狠毒，萬樣驍勇，把師父連夜夾生吃了，如今骨肉無存。By the time day broke, I went into the city to make inquiries, and, unbearably, those demons were so vicious and cruel, so fierce and formidable in every way, that they ate my master half-raw that very night, so that now not even bone or flesh remains.又況師弟悟能、悟淨，見綁在那廂，不久性命亦皆傾矣。And what's more, my fellow disciples Wuneng and Wujing, I saw bound over there — before long their lives too will surely be lost.弟子沒及奈何，特地到此參拜如來。Your disciple, at the end of his resources, has come specially here to pay homage to the Tathagata.望大慈悲，將鬆箍咒兒念念，退下我這頭上箍兒，交還如來，放我弟子回花果山寬閑耍子去罷。」說未了，淚如泉湧，悲聲不絕。I beg your great mercy: recite the Loosening-the-Fillet spell, take this band off my head, let me return it to you, and set your disciple free to go back to Flower-Fruit Mountain and live at ease.' Before he had finished speaking, his tears gushed like a spring, and his sobbing did not cease.如來笑道：「悟空少得煩惱。The Tathagata laughed and said, 'Wukong, trouble yourself less.那妖精神通廣大，你勝不得他，所以這等心痛。」行者跪在下面，搥著胸膛道：「不瞞如來說，弟子當年鬧天宮，稱大聖，自為人以來，不曾吃虧，今番卻遭這毒魔之手。」That demon has vast magic powers, and you cannot overcome him — that is why you grieve so.' Xingzhe, kneeling below, beat his chest and said, 'I will not hide it from the Tathagata — in the years when your disciple wreaked havoc in Heaven and called himself the Great Sage, from the time I came into being I never once suffered defeat, yet this time I have fallen into the hands of this venomous demon.'

如来佛祖正端坐在九品宝莲台上，与十八尊轮世的阿罗汉讲经，即开口道：「孙悟空来了，汝等出去接待接待。」大众阿罗遵佛旨，两路幢幡宝盖，即出山门应声道：「孙大圣，如来有旨相唤哩。」那山门口四大金刚却才闪开路，让行者前进。众阿罗引至宝莲台下，见如来倒身下拜，两泪悲啼。如来道：「悟空，有何事这等悲啼？」行者道：「弟子屡蒙教训之恩，托庇在佛爷爷之门下。自归正果，保护唐僧，拜为师范，一路上苦不可言。今至狮驼山狮驼洞、狮驼城，有三个毒魔，乃狮王、象王、大鹏，把我师父捉将去，连弟子一概遭迍，都捆在蒸笼里，受汤火之灾。幸弟子脱逃，唤龙王救免。是夜偷出师等，不料灾星难脱，复又擒回。及至天明，入城打听，叵耐那魔十分狠毒，万样骁勇，把师父连夜夹生吃了，如今骨肉无存。又况师弟悟能、悟净，见绑在那厢，不久性命亦皆倾矣。弟子没及奈何，特地到此参拜如来。望大慈悲，将松箍咒儿念念，退下我这头上箍儿，交还如来，放我弟子回花果山宽闲耍子去罢。」说未了，泪如泉涌，悲声不绝。如来笑道：「悟空少得烦恼。那妖精神通广大，你胜不得他，所以这等心痛。」行者跪在下面，搥著胸膛道：「不瞒如来说，弟子当年闹天宫，称大圣，自为人以来，不曾吃亏，今番却遭这毒魔之手。」

如來聞言道：「你且休恨，那妖精我認得他。」行者猛然失聲道：「如來，我聽見人講說，那妖精與你有親哩。」如來道：「這個刁猢猻，怎麼個妖精與我有親？」行者笑道：「不與你有親，如何認得？」如來道：「我慧眼觀之，故此認得。On hearing this the Tathagata said, 'Do not resent it for now — I know that demon.' Xingzhe blurted out at once, 'Tathagata, I have heard people say that this demon is a relation of yours.' The Tathagata said, 'This cunning monkey — how could any demon be a relation of mine?' Xingzhe said, laughing, 'If he weren't a relation of yours, how would you know him?' The Tathagata said, 'I perceive him with my wisdom-eye, and that is how I know him.那老怪與二怪有主。」叫：「阿儺、迦葉，來，你兩個分頭駕雲去五臺山、峨眉山，宣文殊、普賢來見。」二尊者即奉旨而去。As for the Old Fiend and the Second Fiend, they have their masters.' Then he called: 'Ananda, Kasyapa, come — the two of you mount your clouds separately and go to Mount Wutai and Mount Emei, and summon Manjusri and Samantabhadra to come see me.' The two Venerable Ones at once obeyed the command and departed.如來道：「這是老魔、二怪之主。The Tathagata said, 'These are the masters of the Old Demon and the Second Fiend.但那三怪，說將起來，也是與我有些親處。」行者道：「親是父黨？But as for the Third Fiend, when it comes down to it, he too has some kinship with me.' Xingzhe said, 'Is the kinship on your father's side?母黨？」如來道：「自那混沌分時，天開於子，地闢於丑，人生於寅。Or your mother's side?' The Tathagata said, 'From the time chaos first divided, Heaven opened at the hour of Zi, Earth was formed at the hour of Chou, and Man was born at the hour of Yin.天地再交合，萬物盡皆生。Heaven and Earth then joined together again, and the ten thousand things were all brought into being.萬物有走獸飛禽，走獸以麒麟為之長，飛禽以鳳凰為之長。Among the ten thousand things there were beasts that run and birds that fly; among the running beasts the qilin was chief, and among the flying birds the phoenix was chief.那鳳凰又得交合之氣，育生孔雀、大鵬。That phoenix, through the vital force of union, brought forth the Peacock and the Great Roc.孔雀出世之時最惡，能吃人，四十五里路，把人一口吸之。When the Peacock first came into the world she was most fierce, able to devour men — from forty-five li away she could draw a man in with a single breath.我在雪山頂上，修成丈六金身，早被他也把我吸下肚去。I, cultivating myself on the summit of the Snow Mountains into a golden body sixteen feet tall, was likewise drawn down into her belly by her.我欲從他便門而出，恐污真身。I wished to come out through her lower passage, but feared it would defile my true body.是我剖開他脊背，跨上靈山。So instead I cut open her spine and climbed out onto Vulture Peak.欲傷他命，當被諸佛勸解：傷孔雀如傷我母。I meant to take her life, but was dissuaded by all the Buddhas, who said: to harm the Peacock would be to harm my own mother.故此留他在靈山會上，封他做佛母孔雀大明王菩薩。For this reason I kept her at the assembly on Vulture Peak, and conferred on her the title Buddha-Mother Peacock Great Illuminating King Bodhisattva.大鵬是與他一母所生，故此有些親處。」行者聞言笑道：「如來，若這般比論，你還是妖精的外甥哩。」如來道：「那怪須是我去，方可收得。」行者叩頭，啟上如來：「千萬望挪玉一降。」The Great Roc was born of the same mother, and that is why there is some kinship there.' When Xingzhe heard this he laughed and said, 'Tathagata, reasoning it out this way, you are actually the demon's nephew.' The Tathagata said, 'That demon can only be subdued if I go myself.' Xingzhe kowtowed and addressed the Tathagata: 'I beg most earnestly that you deign to descend and lend your presence.'

如来闻言道：「你且休恨，那妖精我认得他。」行者猛然失声道：「如来，我听见人讲说，那妖精与你有亲哩。」如来道：「这个刁猢狲，怎么个妖精与我有亲？」行者笑道：「不与你有亲，如何认得？」如来道：「我慧眼观之，故此认得。那老怪与二怪有主。」叫：「阿傩、迦叶，来，你两个分头驾云去五台山、峨眉山，宣文殊、普贤来见。」二尊者即奉旨而去。如来道：「这是老魔、二怪之主。但那三怪，说将起来，也是与我有些亲处。」行者道：「亲是父党？母党？」如来道：「自那混沌分时，天开于子，地辟于丑，人生于寅。天地再交合，万物尽皆生。万物有走兽飞禽，走兽以麒麟为之长，飞禽以凤凰为之长。那凤凰又得交合之气，育生孔雀、大鹏。孔雀出世之时最恶，能吃人，四十五里路，把人一口吸之。我在雪山顶上，修成丈六金身，早被他也把我吸下肚去。我欲从他便门而出，恐污真身。是我剖开他脊背，跨上灵山。欲伤他命，当被诸佛劝解：伤孔雀如伤我母。故此留他在灵山会上，封他做佛母孔雀大明王菩萨。大鹏是与他一母所生，故此有些亲处。」行者闻言笑道：「如来，若这般比论，你还是妖精的外甥哩。」如来道：「那怪须是我去，方可收得。」行者叩头，启上如来：「千万望挪玉一降。」

如來即下蓮臺，同諸佛眾，徑出山門。The Tathagata at once came down from his lotus throne, and together with the assembly of Buddhas, went straight out through the mountain gate.又見阿儺、迦葉引文殊、普賢來見，二菩薩對佛禮拜。He then saw Ananda and Kasyapa bringing Manjusri and Samantabhadra to see him, and the two Bodhisattvas bowed in homage before the Buddha.如來道：「菩薩之獸，下山多少時了？」文殊道：「七日了。」如來道：「山中方七日，世上幾千年。The Tathagata said, 'How long has it been since the Bodhisattvas' mounts came down from the mountain?' Manjusri said, 'Seven days.' The Tathagata said, 'Seven days in the mountains is several thousand years in the world below.不知在那廂傷了多少生靈，快隨我收他去。」二菩薩相隨左右，同眾飛空。There is no telling how many living creatures they have harmed down there — come with me quickly and let us collect them.' The two Bodhisattvas followed at his sides, and together with the assembly flew up into the sky.只見那：And there could be seen:

如来即下莲台，同诸佛众，径出山门。又见阿傩、迦叶引文殊、普贤来见，二菩萨对佛礼拜。如来道：「菩萨之兽，下山多少时了？」文殊道：「七日了。」如来道：「山中方七日，世上几千年。不知在那厢伤了多少生灵，快随我收他去。」二菩萨相随左右，同众飞空。只见那：

大聖有此人情，請得佛祖與眾前來，不多時，早望見城池。Thanks to the Great Sage's having secured this favor, the Buddha and his assembly had come, and before long they could already see the city walls in the distance.行者報道：「如來，那放黑氣的乃是獅駝國也。」如來道：「你先下去，到那城中，與妖精交戰，許敗不許勝。Xingzhe reported, 'Tathagata, that place giving off the black vapor is the Kingdom of Shituo.' The Tathagata said, 'You go down first, into that city, and do battle with the demons — you are allowed to lose, but not to win.敗上來，我自收他。」Once beaten, come back up, and I myself will subdue them.'

大圣有此人情，请得佛祖与众前来，不多时，早望见城池。行者报道：「如来，那放黑气的乃是狮驼国也。」如来道：「你先下去，到那城中，与妖精交战，许败不许胜。败上来，我自收他。」

大聖即按雲頭，徑至城上，腳踏著垛兒罵道：「潑孽畜！The Great Sage at once brought his cloud down, went straight to above the city, and, standing with his feet on the battlements, cursed loudly: 'Vile bestial wretches!快出來與老孫交戰。」慌得那城樓上小妖急跳下城中報道：「大王，孫行者在城上叫戰哩。」老妖道：「這猴兒兩三日不來，今朝卻又叫戰，莫不是請了些救兵來耶？」三怪道：「怕他怎的？Come out quickly and fight with old Sun!' In a panic, the little demon on the city tower leapt down at once into the city to report: 'Great King, Sun Xingzhe is up on the wall calling for battle.' The Old Demon said, 'This monkey hasn't come these two or three days, and now today he calls for battle again — could it be he's gone and fetched some reinforcements?' The Third Fiend said, 'What's there to fear from him?我們都去看來。」三個魔頭，各持兵器，趕上城來，見了行者，更不打話，舉兵器一齊亂刺；Let's all go and see.' The three demon chiefs, each grasping his weapon, hurried up onto the wall, and on seeing Xingzhe, without a word raised their weapons and stabbed at him all together in a wild flurry;行者掄鐵棒掣手相迎。Xingzhe swung his iron rod and met them head-on.鬥經七八回合，行者佯輸而走。After some seven or eight rounds of fighting, Xingzhe pretended to lose and fled.那妖王喊聲大振，叫道：「那裡走？」大聖觔斗一縱，跳上半空；The demon kings shouted mightily and cried, 'Where do you think you're going?' The Great Sage gave a leap of his somersault and sprang up into midair;三個精即駕雲來趕。the three demons at once mounted clouds and gave chase.行者將身一閃，藏在佛爺爺金光影裡，全然不見。Xingzhe gave his body a flick and hid himself within the golden light of the Buddha, vanishing from sight entirely.只見那過去、未來、見在的三尊佛像與五百阿羅漢、三千揭諦神，佈散左右，把那三個妖王圍住，水泄不通。And there could be seen the three Buddha images of the past, the future, and the present, together with the Five Hundred Arhats and the Three Thousand Guardian Spirits, spreading out to left and right, surrounding the three demon kings so tightly that not even water could seep through.老魔慌了手腳，叫道：「兄弟，不好了，那猴子真是個地裡鬼，那裡請得個主人公來也。」三魔道：「大哥休得悚懼，我們一齊上前，使槍刀搠倒如來，奪他那雷音寶剎。」這魔頭不識起倒，真個舉刀上前亂砍。The Old Demon, flustered, cried out, 'Brothers, this is bad! That monkey really is a crafty devil — see what master he's gone and fetched.' The Third Fiend said, 'Elder brother, don't be afraid — let's all rush forward together, use our spears and blades to strike down the Tathagata, and seize his Thunderclap Treasure Monastery.' This demon chief, not knowing what was good for him, truly raised his blade and rushed forward hacking wildly.卻被文殊、普賢念動真言，喝道：「這孽畜還不皈正，更待怎生？」諕得老怪、二怪不敢撐持，丟了兵器，打個滾，現了本相。But Manjusri and Samantabhadra recited their true words and shouted, 'You bestial creatures — will you still not return to the right path? What more are you waiting for?' This so terrified the Old Fiend and the Second Fiend that they dared not resist further, threw down their weapons, rolled over once, and revealed their true forms.二菩薩將蓮花臺拋在那怪的脊背上，飛身跨坐，二怪遂泯耳皈依。The two Bodhisattvas cast their lotus thrones onto the backs of the two fiends and leapt up to sit astride them, and the two fiends thereupon lowered their ears in submission.

大圣即按云头，径至城上，脚踏著垛儿骂道：「泼孽畜！快出来与老孙交战。」慌得那城楼上小妖急跳下城中报道：「大王，孙行者在城上叫战哩。」老妖道：「这猴儿两三日不来，今朝却又叫战，莫不是请了些救兵来耶？」三怪道：「怕他怎的？我们都去看来。」三个魔头，各持兵器，赶上城来，见了行者，更不打话，举兵器一齐乱刺；行者抡铁棒掣手相迎。斗经七八回合，行者佯输而走。那妖王喊声大振，叫道：「那里走？」大圣觔斗一纵，跳上半空；三个精即驾云来赶。行者将身一闪，藏在佛爷爷金光影里，全然不见。只见那过去、未来、见在的三尊佛像与五百阿罗汉、三千揭谛神，布散左右，把那三个妖王围住，水泄不通。老魔慌了手脚，叫道：「兄弟，不好了，那猴子真是个地里鬼，那里请得个主人公来也。」三魔道：「大哥休得悚惧，我们一齐上前，使枪刀搠倒如来，夺他那雷音宝刹。」这魔头不识起倒，真个举刀上前乱砍。却被文殊、普贤念动真言，喝道：「这孽畜还不皈正，更待怎生？」諕得老怪、二怪不敢撑持，丢了兵器，打个滚，现了本相。二菩萨将莲花台抛在那怪的脊背上，飞身跨坐，二怪遂泯耳皈依。

二菩薩既收了青獅、白象，只有那第三個妖魔不伏。Now that the two Bodhisattvas had subdued the Green Lion and the White Elephant, only the third demon remained unsubmitted.騰開翅，丟了方天戟，扶搖直上，掄利爪要叼捉猴王。He spread his wings wide, flung away his halberd, soared straight upward, and swung his sharp talons, meaning to snatch and seize the Monkey King.原來大聖藏在光中，他怎敢近。But the Great Sage was hidden within the light, and how could he dare approach.如來情知此意，即閃金光，把那鵲巢貫頂之頭迎風一幌，變做鮮紅的一塊血肉。The Tathagata, knowing his intent full well, at once flashed his golden light, and turned the crown of his head — where a magpie's nest once perched — into a patch of raw, bright-red flesh, exposed to the wind for a moment.妖精掄利爪叼他一下。The demon swung his sharp talons and snatched at it once.被佛爺把手往上一指，那妖翅膊上就了筋，飛不去，只在佛頂上不能遠遁，現了本相，乃是一個大鵬金翅鵰。But the Buddha pointed his hand upward, and the demon's wings and arms at once seized up with cramp, so that he could fly no farther, and could only hover above the Buddha's crown, unable to escape far, and he revealed his true form: a Great Roc, the Golden-Winged Peng.即開口對佛應聲叫道：「如來，你怎麼使大法力困住我也？」如來道：「你在此處多生孽障，跟我去，有進益之功。」妖精道：「你那裡持齋把素，極貧極苦；At once he opened his mouth and called out to the Buddha in reply, 'Tathagata, why have you used such great magic power to trap me?' The Tathagata said, 'You have created too much evil karma in this place — come with me, and there will be merit and benefit in it.' The demon said, 'Over where you are, one keeps to vegetarian fare and fasting — utterly poor, utterly hard;我這裡吃人肉，受用無窮。here, I eat human flesh, and enjoy endless pleasure.你若餓壞了我，你有罪愆。」如來道：「我管四大部洲，無數眾生瞻仰，凡做好事，我教他先祭汝口。」那大鵬欲脫難脫，要走怎走，是以沒奈何，只得皈依。If you starve me, the fault will be yours.' The Tathagata said, 'I govern the Four Great Continents, where countless living beings look up to me in reverence — whenever they perform good deeds, I will have them first offer sacrifice to your mouth.' The Great Roc wished to break free but could not, wished to flee but had no way to go, and so, with no other choice, had to submit.

行者方才轉出，向如來叩頭道：「佛爺，你今收了妖精，除了大害，只是沒了我師父也。」大鵬咬著牙恨道：「潑猴頭！Only then did Xingzhe come out, and kowtowing to the Tathagata said, 'Buddha, now that you have subdued the demons and removed this great scourge, still my master is gone.' The Great Roc, gnashing his teeth in bitter hatred, said, 'Vile monkey-head!尋這等狠人困我。You went and found such a ruthless one to trap me.你那老和尚幾曾吃他？That old monk of yours — when did we ever eat him?如今在那錦香亭鐵櫃裡不是？」行者聞言，忙叩頭謝了佛祖。Isn't he right now in the iron cabinet in Brocade Fragrance Pavilion?' When Xingzhe heard this, he hastily kowtowed in thanks to the Buddha.佛祖不敢鬆放了大鵬，也只教他在光焰上做個護法，引眾回雲，徑歸寶剎。The Buddha dared not let the Great Roc loose, but instead had him serve as a Dharma-protector amid the flames of light, and led the assembly back on their clouds, returning straight to his treasured monastery.

行者方才转出，向如来叩头道：「佛爷，你今收了妖精，除了大害，只是没了我师父也。」大鹏咬著牙恨道：「泼猴头！寻这等狠人困我。你那老和尚几曾吃他？如今在那锦香亭铁柜里不是？」行者闻言，忙叩头谢了佛祖。佛祖不敢松放了大鹏，也只教他在光焰上做个护法，引众回云，径归宝刹。

行者卻按落雲頭，直入城裡，那城裡一個小妖兒也沒有了。Xingzhe, meanwhile, brought his cloud down and went straight into the city, where there was not a single little demon left.正是：蛇無頭而不行，鳥無翅而不飛。Truly: a snake without a head cannot travel, a bird without wings cannot fly.他見佛祖收了妖王，各自逃生而去。Seeing that the Buddha had subdued the demon kings, they had all fled for their lives, each his own way.行者才解救了八戒、沙僧，尋著行李、馬匹，與他二人說：「師父不曾吃，都跟我來。」引他兩個徑入內院，找著錦香亭，打開門看，內有一個鐵櫃，只聽得三藏有啼哭之聲。Only then did Xingzhe untie and rescue Bajie and Sha Seng, and find the baggage and the horse, and said to the two of them, 'Master was never eaten — both of you come with me.' He led the two of them straight into the inner courtyard, found Brocade Fragrance Pavilion, opened the door and looked in, and inside was an iron cabinet, from which could be heard the sound of Sanzang weeping.沙僧使降妖杖打開鐵鎖，揭開櫃蓋，叫聲：「師父。」三藏見了，放聲大哭道：「徒弟啊，怎生降得妖魔？Sha Seng used his demon-subduing staff to break open the iron lock, lifted the cabinet lid, and called out, 'Master.' When Sanzang saw them, he wept aloud and said, 'Disciples! However did you manage to subdue the demons?'如何得到此尋著我也？」行者把上項事從頭至尾，細說了一遍。"How did you manage to find me here?" Xingzhe told him the whole affair from beginning to end, explaining it in detail.三藏感謝不盡。Sanzang thanked him again and again, unable to express his gratitude fully.師徒們在那宮殿裡尋了些米糧，安排些茶飯，飽吃一餐，收拾出城，找大路投西而去。Master and disciples searched about the palace hall for some rice and grain, prepared a bit of tea and a meal, ate their fill, then packed up, left the city, and set out on the main road heading west.正是：Indeed:
