Bajie and Monkey Battle the Three Demon Lords

076Chapter 76

The story tells how Great Sage Sun, inside the old demon king's belly, kept up his mischief for a while; the demon king toppled to the ground, without sound or breath, and but for the fact that he did not speak, one would have thought him dead — yet still he moved his hand now and again.:「。」:「。」:「When the demon king recovered his breath, he cried out: "Great Compassionate, Great Merciful Bodhisattva Equal to Heaven!" Hearing this, Wukong said: "My child, don't waste your breath — save a few words and just call me Grandfather Sun." That demon, loving his own life, truly did call out: "Grandfather, Grandfather, it was my fault.By one mistake and one blunder I swallowed you, and now instead you are doing me harm.。」I beg the Great Sage, in his mercy, to take pity on this ant-like creature's craving for life, and spare me, and I will gladly carry your master over the mountain." Though the Great Sage was a hero, he was greatly concerned about Tang Seng's progress on the journey.:「?」:「Seeing the demon's pitiful pleading, and being one who liked to be flattered, he let his good will return, and said: "Demon, I will spare you — but how will you carry my master?" The old demon said: "I have here no gold, silver, pearls, kingfisher feathers, agate, coral, glass, amber, hawksbill, or other rare treasures to give you.。」:「But my two brothers and I will carry a sedan chair woven of fragrant rattan and bear your master across this mountain." Wukong laughed and said: "If you're offering to carry him in a sedan chair, that's better than treasure.。」Open your mouth, and I'll come out." The demon truly opened his mouth wide.:「。」The third demon crept close and whispered to the old demon: "Big brother, when he comes out, snap your jaws down on him and chew that monkey to bits, then swallow him — then he'll never be able to torment you again."

As it happened, Wukong, inside, heard this clearly, so he did not come out first, but instead thrust out his golden-hooped rod to test him.The demon indeed bit down hard, and with a crunching sound, he shattered his own front teeth.:「Wukong pulled back the rod and said: "Fine demon indeed! I was ready to spare your life and come out, and instead you bite at me, trying to take my life.If I don't come out, I'll simply torment you to death, little by little.。」:「I won't come out, I won't come out." The old demon reproached the third demon: "Brother, you've turned one of our own against another. We ought simply to invite him out politely, yet you told me to bite him.He wasn't bitten at all, but instead I've cracked my own gums in pain.?」How did this come about?"

:「?」:「『。』Seeing the old demon blame him, the third demon resorted to a taunting trick, and shouted loudly: "Sun Wukong! I have heard your name ring like thunder in my ears — they say you displayed your might outside the South Heaven Gate and threw your weight around beneath the Hall of Miraculous Mist, and now on the road to the West you subdue demons and bind monsters — but it turns out you're just a small-fry monkey-head after all." Wukong said: "How am I small-fry?" The third demon said: "'A fine sight draws travelers from a thousand li; one's name should travel ten thousand li.' Come out and fight me — that would make you a real man.How can you go about your business inside a person's belly??」:「If that's not small-fry, what is?" Hearing this, Wukong thought secretly to himself: "True, true, true.If I were now to tear apart his intestines and mash his liver and finish off this demon, what difficulty would there be in that? But it would truly ruin my reputation.Very well, very well — open your mouth, and I'll come out and settle this with you in a proper match.使。」But the mouth of your cave is too narrow and cramped — not good for wielding weapons. We must go to a more open place." Hearing this, the third demon at once mustered his greater and lesser demons, front and rear, more than thirty thousand of them, all wielding sharp, formidable weapons, and marched out of the cave to form a Three-Powers battle formation, waiting only for Wukong to emerge from the mouth before all charging together.:「。」The second and third demons supported the old demon and went straight to the cave gate, calling out: "Sun Wukong, good fellow, come out! Here is a battlefield fit for a fine fight."

The Great Sage, inside his belly, heard crows cawing and magpies chattering outside, and cranes crying on the wind, and knew this was an open, spacious place.:「He thought to himself: "If I don't go out, I break faith with him;調but if I do go out — this demon has a human face but a beast's heart: earlier he said he'd carry my master, only to lure me out and bite me, and now he has mustered troops here again.便。」:「!」Very well, very well — I'll give him a plan that serves both purposes: I'll go out as agreed, but I'll also leave a root planted in his belly." With that he reached back, plucked a hair from his tail, blew a breath of magic breath onto it, and cried "Change!" — it at once turned into a cord no thicker than a strand of hair, yet a good forty zhang long.As the cord was played out, it grew thicker the moment it met the air.He tied one end around the demon's heart and liver, forming it into a slipknot. If the knot was not pulled, it stayed loose; but the moment it was pulled, it caused pain.:「便Holding the other end, he laughed and said: "Once I go out, if he sends off my master, well and good;。」but if he doesn't, and instead stirs up his troops and weapons, I won't even bother fighting him — I need only tug this cord, and it will be just as if I were still inside his belly." Then he shrank his body down small and crawled toward the opening.:「Crawling down to beneath the throat, he saw the demon's mouth gaping wide open, with sharp steel teeth set top and bottom like knife blades, and he suddenly thought: "No good, no good.If I go out through his mouth pulling this cord, he'll fear the pain and snap his jaws down — won't that bite the cord in two?。」I'll go out where there are no teeth." The fine Great Sage, holding the cord, crawled forward along the roof of the demon's mouth, up to his nasal passage. The old demon's nose began to itch, and with an "Achoo!" he sneezed, and out shot Wukong.

Feeling the wind on him, Wukong arched his back once, and at once grew to some three zhang tall, one hand gripping the cord, the other holding his iron rod.The demon, not knowing better, seeing him emerge, raised his steel blade and slashed straight at his face.使The Great Sage met it with his iron rod in one hand.使使Then he saw the second demon wielding a spear and the third demon a halberd, coming at him wildly, heedless of head or face. The Great Sage let the cord go slack, put away his iron rod, and swiftly leapt onto a cloud and fled. This was because he feared being surrounded by that horde of lesser demons, which would make it hard to accomplish anything. He leapt out beyond their camp, to an open mountain peak, brought his cloud down, and with both hands pulled the cord with all his strength — only then did pain strike the old demon's heart.Suffering the pain, the demon lurched upward to struggle free, and the Great Sage pulled downward again.:「The lesser demons, watching from afar, all cried out together: "Great King, don't provoke him — just let him go.。」This monkey doesn't observe the proper season: Qingming hasn't even come yet, and there he is flying a kite!" Hearing this, the Great Sage put his strength into one more hard stamp. The old demon came tumbling from midair with a whoosh, spinning like a spinning wheel, and crashed down into the dust.He fell straight into the hard, packed yellow earth at the foot of the mountain slope, smashing out a pit two chi deep.

:「In alarm, the second and third demons both brought their clouds down together, rushed forward and grabbed hold of the cord, and knelt at the foot of the slope, pleading pitifully: "Great Sage, ah — we always said you were an immortal of broad and generous heart, who would have known you were a creature with the belly of a mouse and the guts of a snail.。」:「We truly did lure you out to face us in battle, never expecting you would tie a cord to our elder brother's heart." Wukong laughed and said: "You pack of vile demons are utterly without manners. The first time, you lured me out only to bite me; this time, you lured me out only to array troops against me.For several tens of thousands of demon soldiers to fight me alone — that isn't reasonable by any standard.。」:「。」:「。」:「Pull him along, pull him along, to see my master." The demons all kowtowed together, saying: "Great Sage, in your mercy, spare our lives, and we will gladly carry the venerable master over the mountain." Wukong laughed and said: "If you want your lives, you need only take a knife and cut the cord." The old demon said: "Grandfather, oh!?」:「。」:「。」:「If you cut the outer part, the inner end is still tied to my heart, and my throat feels sickeningly ticklish inside — what am I to do?" Wukong said: "In that case, open your mouth, and let me go back in to untie the cord." The old demon panicked and said: "If you go in again, you surely won't come back out — that would be truly hard, truly hard." Wukong said: "I have the skill to undo the inner end of the cord from the outside.?」:「。」便Once it's undone, will you truly carry my master?" The old demon said: "The moment it's undone, I'll send him off — I would not dare speak a false word." The Great Sage, judging this to be sincere, at once shook his body and drew the hair back in.At once the demon's pain ceased.使This was a concealing trick of the Great Sage's — he had used the hair to tie the demon's heart, and once he withdrew the hair, the pain stopped.:「。」The three demons leapt up and thanked him, saying: "Great Sage, please go back and tell Tang Seng to pack up the luggage — we will come bearing the sedan chair to carry him." The assembled demons laid down their weapons and all returned to the cave.

The Great Sage gathered in the cord and headed straight back east of the mountain, and from afar he saw Tang Seng rolling on the ground weeping bitterly, while Zhu Bajie and Sha Seng had untied the bundles and were dividing up the luggage between them.:「Wukong sighed inwardly: "No need to ask — Bajie must have told our master I was eaten by the demon, and master, unable to bear the loss, is weeping bitterly;西and that fool is dividing the goods to break up the party.Heh!I wonder if that's really it?。」:「。」:「──Let me call out to him and see." He brought his cloud down and called: "Master!" Hearing this, Sha Seng reproached Bajie: "You're a coffin-stand of a man — always bringing harm to others.?」:「Elder Brother never died, yet you said he was dead, and here you are up to this business — how could it not summon him back?" Bajie said: "I plainly saw him swallowed whole by the demon in one gulp.。」:「It must be an unlucky day, and that monkey has come to show his ghost." Wukong came right up to him, grabbed Bajie's face with one hand, and slapped him staggering with the other, saying: "You dolt!?」:「?」:「What ghost am I showing?" The fool, covering his face, said: "Brother, you truly were eaten by that demon — how, how are you alive again?" Wukong said: "What use are you, you useless lump of a coward?穿After he swallowed me, I clawed at his intestines and pinched his lungs, and then threaded this cord through his heart, and pulled it until the pain was unbearable, and one after another they kowtowed and pleaded, so I spared their lives.。」:「Now they're bringing a sedan chair to carry our master over the mountain." Hearing this, Sanzang scrambled clumsily to his feet, bowed to Wukong, and said: "Disciple, ah, what trouble you've endured for my sake.。」:「Had I believed Wuneng's words, I would already be dead." Wukong swung his fist and struck at Bajie, scolding him: "You chaff-guzzling fool, so utterly slack, so far from being a proper man.。」Master, don't fret at all — that demon will indeed come to carry you." Sha Seng too felt deeply ashamed, and hastily covered things over, gathering up the luggage and saddling the horse, and they waited on the road; but no more of that for now.

:「Now to tell of the three demon kings, who led their host of goblins back to the cave. The second demon said: "Brother, I thought Sun Wukong was some nine-headed, eight-tailed monster, but it turns out he's just such a puny little monkey. You shouldn't have swallowed him — had you simply fought him, how could he possibly have bested the two of us?With the tens of thousands of goblins in our cave, we could drown him with our spit alone.便But you swallowed him into your belly, and then he worked his magic and made you suffer — how dare you even compare yourself to him?。」:「?」:「。」 Just now, saying we'd send off Tang Seng, was all pretense — really it was only because our elder brother's life was at stake, so we tricked him into coming out; we will never actually send him off." The old demon said: "Worthy brother, why should we not send him off?" The second demon said: "Give me three thousand lesser demons, and let me array a battle formation — I have the skill to capture that monkey-head." The old demon said: "Never mind three thousand — take our entire camp if you must, so long as you catch him, it will be credit to us all."

:「。」:「:『。』?」:「So the second demon at once mustered three thousand lesser demons and went straight to array them beside the main road, sending a blue-flag bearer back and forth to announce: "Sun Wukong, come out at once and do battle with our Second Great King!" Hearing this, Bajie laughed and said: "Brother, as the saying goes, 'A liar can't fool his own townsfolk.' Now you're playing tricks and stirring up mischief: how can you say the demon has been subdued and is coming with a sedan chair to send off our master, and yet now they're calling for battle — how is that?" Wukong said: "The old demon has already been subdued by me and dares not show his face — the mere word 'Sun' gives him a headache. This must certainly be the second demon, refusing to accept it and unwilling to send us off, hence this challenge to battle.I was just thinking, brother — these demons are three brothers, and see how loyal they are to each other;we too are three brothers — shall we show no such loyalty at all?。」:「I have already subdued the eldest demon; now that the second one has come out, it would do no harm for you to go fight him a bit." Bajie said: "Why should I fear him?。」 :「Let me go give him a battle." Wukong said: "If you want to go, then go." Bajie laughed and said: "Brother, I'll go, I'll go — but lend me that cord of yours to use." Wukong said: "What do you want it for??」:「You have no skill to burrow into his belly, and no skill to tie it to his heart — what use would it be to you?" Bajie said: "I want to tie it around my waist, as a life-saving rope. You and Sha Seng hold the other end, and let me go out and fight him.便If it looks like I'm winning, you let it slack, and I'll capture him;。」:「。」but if I'm losing, you pull me back, so he can't drag me off." Wukong indeed laughed secretly to himself: "This is another chance to make sport of the fool." So he tied the cord around Bajie's waist and sent him off to battle.

:「。」:「。」The fool shouldered his rake and ran up the mountain slope, shouting: "Demon, come out and fight your Grandfather Pig!" The blue-flag bearer hastily reported: "Great King, a long-snouted, big-eared monk has come!" The second demon at once came out of camp, and seeing Bajie, without a word, leveled his spear and thrust straight at his face;the fool raised his rake and met him head-on.:「。」The two of them crossed weapons before the slope, and before seven or eight rounds had passed, the fool's arms grew weak and he could no longer hold off the demon, and he turned his head in haste, shouting: "Elder Brother, it's no good! Pull, pull the life-saving rope! Pull the life-saving rope!" Hearing this from the other side, the Great Sage instead let the cord go slack, and flung it forward. The fool, having lost the battle, turned and fled. Now, as long as the cord had been dragging along as he moved, he hadn't noticed it;but when he turned back, since it had gone slack, it tangled his feet, and he tripped and fell, and scrambling up, fell again. At first he only stumbled and staggered, but then he fell flat on his face in the dirt. The demon caught up with him, uncoiled his trunk like a flying dragon, and wound it around Bajie, snout and all, and carried him off in triumph back to the cave. The assembled demons sang songs of victory and swarmed back together.

:「Watching from the slope below, Sanzang grew angry at Wukong again, saying: "Wukong, no wonder Wuneng cursed you as good as dead — it turns out you brothers have no mutual affection at all, only hearts full of envy and spite toward one another. When he called out for you to pull the life-saving rope, why didn't you pull it, but instead threw the cord away??」:「Now that he's been captured, what's to be done?" Wukong laughed and said: "Master, you're far too partial, far too biased.Never mind — when old Monkey himself was captured, you hardly gave it a thought, saying it was only fitting for one born to sacrifice himself;but the moment this fool gets caught, you blame me instead.。」:「Let him suffer a bit of hardship too, so he'll truly understand how hard the journey to fetch the scriptures is." Sanzang said: "Disciple, ah, when you go, how could I not worry about you?I think of how you can transform yourself, and surely you'd come to no real harm. But that fool is clumsy and awkward, and has no skill at shape-changing — this time, there's little chance of good and much of ill.。」:「。」Go and rescue him, won't you?" Wukong said: "Master, don't complain — let me go and rescue him."

:「He leapt up at once and hurried up the mountain, thinking bitterly to himself: "This fool cursed me as dead — I won't let him off easily just yet.。」Let me follow and see how the demon deals with him, and let him suffer a bit first, before I go and save him." He then formed a spell and recited a true incantation, shook himself, and turned into a tiny gnat, flying off to perch at the base of Bajie's ear, and went with the demon into the cave. The second demon, leading his three thousand goblins, arrived at the cave mouth amid great fanfare of drums and blares, and settled in.:「。」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「。」:「He himself carried Bajie inside and said: "Elder Brother, I've caught one." The old demon said: "Bring him for me to see." He loosened his trunk and dropped Bajie down, saying: "Isn't this him?" The old demon said: "This fellow is useless." Hearing this, Bajie said: "Great King, let the useless one go, and go catch the useful one instead." The third demon said: "Useless as he may be, he's still Tang Seng's disciple, Zhu Bajie.Bind him up for now, and put him to soak in the pond out back. :「。」Once his bristles have soaked off, we'll cut open his belly, salt him down, and dry him in the sun, to have ready as a snack for wine on a cloudy day." Greatly alarmed, Bajie said: "That's the end of me, that's the end of me — I've run into a demon that deals in salted goods!" The assembled demons all set to work together, trussed the fool up hog-tied, hoisted him up and carried him to the edge of the pond, and shoved him right into the middle, then all turned and left.

The Great Sage flew up to look, and saw the fool floating with all four limbs turned upward, his snout dug in, half-sunk half-floating, breathing out huffing sounds through his mouth — truly a comical sight: he looked just like a great black lotus pod that had dropped its seeds after being touched by frost in the eighth or ninth month.:「Seeing that face of his, the Great Sage felt both anger and pity toward him, and said: "What's to be done with him?He too is one of the company of the Dragon-Flower Assembly. But I do resent how at the drop of a hat he wants to divide up the luggage and break up the party, and how he keeps urging master to recite the tight-fillet spell to torment me.I recall Sha Seng once telling me that he's saved up a little private stash — I wonder if that's true?。」Let me give him a good scare and see."

:「。」:「?」:「?」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「。」:「。『。』。」:」便The fine Great Sage flew close to his ear, and putting on a false voice, called out: "Zhu Wuneng! Zhu Wuneng!" Alarmed, Bajie said: "Bad luck, oh — this name Wuneng was given me by Guanyin Bodhisattva; ever since I followed Tang Seng I've also been called Bajie — how could anyone here know I'm called Wuneng?" The fool could not help but ask: "Who is it calling my Buddhist name?" Wukong said: "It is I." The fool said: "Who are you?" Wukong said: "I am an officer sent to summon souls." The fool, alarmed, said: "Sir, where have you come from?" Wukong said: "I am sent by King Yama of the Fifth Court to summon you." The fool said: "Sir, please go back and report to King Yama of the Fifth Court that he and my elder brother Sun Wukong are on very good terms — ask him to grant me one more day, and come summon me tomorrow instead." Wukong said: "Nonsense. 'When King Yama decrees death at the third watch, who dares keep a man till the fourth?' Come with me at once, and spare yourself the rope and the dragging." The fool said: "Sir, is there really no leeway to be had?Look at this face of mine — do I still hope to live?"。」 Death is certain, no doubt — it's just a matter of waiting one more day; once this demon has caught my masters too, and they're all gathered together, the account will be settled." Wukong laughed to himself in secret and said, "Very well. I have thirty people on my roster, all due around this same time — let me go summon them and bring them to join you, and that'll mean a day's delay.Do you have any travel money?。」:「?」:「。」:「Give me some of it." Bajie said, "Have mercy — what travel money would a monk have?" Wukong said, "If you have no travel money, I'll bind you with the rope and take you along." The fool panicked and said, "Officer, please don't use the rope on me.I know that rope of yours is called the Life-Chasing Rope — once it's tied on, one's breath is cut off.便。」:「I have some, I have some — I do have a little, just not much." Wukong said, "Where is it?。」:「Hand it over quickly." Bajie said, "Have mercy, have mercy — ever since I became a monk, up to now, whenever pious households have offered meals to monks, seeing that my appetite is large, they've given me a bit more in alms money than the others. I've saved it up bit by bit, and altogether it comes to about five qian of silver.Since it was awkward to keep as loose pieces, I went into the city not long ago and had a silversmith melt it all together into one piece, but he had no conscience and stole some of it, so it's only one piece weighing four qian six fen.。」 Take it, then." Wukong laughed to himself in secret: "This fool doesn't even have trousers on — wherever could he have hidden it?Bah!?」:「Where is your silver?" Bajie said, "It's stuffed inside my left ear.。」I'm all tied up and can't reach it myself — you'll have to take it out yourself."

Hearing this, Wukong at once reached his hand into the hole of the ear and felt around, and indeed pulled out a saddle-shaped lump of silver, weighing a full four qian five or six fen.Holding it in his hand, he couldn't help bursting into loud laughter.:「。」:「。」:「The fool recognized it as Wukong's voice, and cursed wildly from the water: "You heaven-cursed Bimawen! Here I am in such misery, and you still come to swindle money out of me!" Wukong laughed again and said, "You gluttonous wretch! Old Sun has protected our master and suffered who knows how many hardships, while you've been secretly hoarding a private stash!" Bajie said, "What a nerve! What private stash is this? It's all scraped together off my own teeth — I couldn't bear to spend it on food for myself, and saved it to buy a bolt of cloth to make a garment, and yet you've frightened it out of me.。」:「。」:「。」:「。」Give some of it back to me at least." Wukong said, "I won't give you even half a fen." Bajie cursed, "Fine, I'll let you have my life-ransom money — but you'd better save me out of here!" Wukong said, "Don't be so anxious, let me save you." He hid the silver away, at once resumed his true form, drew out his iron rod, drew the fool in close, took hold of his feet, pulled him up, and untied the rope.:「。」:「Bajie leaped up, took off his clothes, wrung the water out, shook them once, and put them back on still damp, saying, "Brother, let's slip out through the back gate." Wukong said, "Sneaking out the back gate — is that the mark of someone with any ambition?。」:「。」:「。」We'll go out through the front gate instead." Bajie said, "My feet are numb from being bound, I can't run." Wukong said, "Just follow me quickly."

Splendid Great Sage — he swung his iron rod, laying about with one move after another, and fought his way out.The fool, enduring the numbness, had no choice but to follow close behind him.He spotted his own nine-toothed rake leaning under the second gate, went forward, shoved the little demons aside, snatched it up, and set to harrowing wildly ahead. Together with Wukong he fought his way through three or four gates, killing who knows how many little demons.:「Hearing this, the Old Demon King said to the Second Demon King, "A fine catch, a fine catch —。」:「?」just look, Sun Wukong has snatched Zhu Bajie away and wounded the little demons at the gate." The Second Demon King at once leaped up, seized his spear, and rushed out the gate, shouting loudly, "You vile ape, how dare you be so insolent, showing such contempt for us?" Hearing this, the Great Sage answered at once and stood his ground.使便The monster gave no chance for words and thrust with his spear at once;Wukong, being a seasoned hand who never panicked, drew his iron rod and met him head-on.The two of them fought a fierce battle outside the cave gate:

Seeing the Great Sage locked in combat with the demon, Bajie stood on the mountain spur with his rake planted upright, not joining the fight, but just watching blankly.滿Seeing that Wukong's rod was heavy and that his every move left no opening, the demon held his spear in a blocking stance, flung his trunk open, and tried to wrap it around him.Wukong, knowing what he was up to, raised the gold-banded rod crosswise with both hands and thrust it upward. The demon's trunk coiled around his waist and hips, but failed to catch his hands.Just watch — with both hands he played tricks with his rod right on the tip of the demon's trunk.:「Seeing this, Bajie beat his chest and said, "Hey!That demon's out of luck. When he wrapped up this clumsy fool of mine, he caught my hands along with everything else, so I couldn't move at all;but when he wraps someone that slippery, he fails to catch the hands.?」With both hands holding the rod, all he needs to do is jab it up the nostril once, and with the pain and streaming snot in that hole, how could the trunk ever hold him?"

Wukong had originally had no such idea — it was Bajie who had just taught it to him.He gave the rod a shake, shrinking it small as a hen's egg yet over ten feet long, and sure enough jabbed it straight up into the demon's nostril.Terrified, the demon let out a rasping sound and flung his trunk open, releasing him.Wukong turned his hand around, seized hold of the trunk in one grab, and hauled forward with all his strength.Protecting himself from the pain, the demon followed along with the pull, stepping forward as he was led.Only then did Bajie dare come near, and he set to wildly harrowing at the demon's hips with his rake.:「Wukong said, "No good, no good. Those rake teeth are sharp — I'm afraid you'll tear the skin and draw blood, and when Master sees it, he'll say again that we've taken a life.調。」Just turn the handle around and hit him with that instead."

Sure enough, the fool raised the rake handle and, with each step, struck a blow;Wukong led him by the trunk — the two of them looked just like a pair of elephant-keepers, leading him down to the foot of the slope.:「?」:「。」:「Just then Sanzang, gazing fixedly ahead, saw the two of them coming amid a great clamor, and at once called out, "Wujing, look — what is it Wukong is leading along?" Sha Monk saw it and laughed, saying, "Master, Elder Brother has grabbed the demon by the trunk and is dragging him along — it's truly enough to make one die laughing." Sanzang said, "Merciful Heaven!Merciful Heaven!Such a huge demon, and such a long trunk.。」:「。」Go and ask him: if he's willing to see us happily across the mountain, then spare him — don't take his life." Sha Monk hurried forward to meet them and called out loudly, "Master says: if the demon truly sees the master across the mountain, he's not to be harmed." Hearing this, the demon at once knelt down and answered with muffled grunts through his nose.It turned out that with Wukong gripping and pinching his trunk, he sounded just like someone with a bad head cold.:「便。」:「He called out, "Lord Tang, if you're willing to spare my life, I will at once fetch a sedan chair and see you across." Wukong said, "My master and disciples are all people of great mercy and goodwill — in keeping with your word, we will spare your life for now.。」Hurry and bring the sedan chair; if you go back on your word again, once caught you'll certainly not be spared a second time." Once released, the demon kowtowed and departed.Wukong and Bajie went to see Tang Seng and related the whole affair.Overcome with shame, Bajie spread his clothes out to dry on the slope and waited there — no more of this for now.

The Second Demon King, trembling with fear, returned to the cave. Before he had even arrived, little demons had already reported to the Old Demon King and the Third Demon King that the Second Demon King had been dragged off by Wukong gripping his trunk.Alarmed and afraid, the Old Demon King, together with the Third Demon King, led the troops out just as the Second Demon King came back alone; they all welcomed him inside and asked why he had been released. The Second Demon King repeated to all of them Sanzang's words of compassion and mercy.Every one of them looked at the others in silence, not daring to say a word.:「?」:「The Second Demon King said, "Elder Brother, shall we see Tang Seng on his way then?" The Old Demon King said, "Brother, what kind of talk is that?Sun Wukong is a monkey-head who deals out mercy and righteousness on a grand scale — earlier, when he was inside my belly, if he'd meant to take my life, he could have killed off a thousand of me;and just now, when he seized your trunk, if he had dragged you off and not let you return, or simply pinched the tip of your trunk to pieces, that would have been truly terrifying.。」:「。」:「Let's hurry and arrange to see him off." The Third Demon King laughed and said, "Send him off, send him off, indeed!" The Old Demon King said, "Worthy Brother, that remark of yours sounds like you're still nursing a grudge.。」If you won't see him off, then the two of us will see him off ourselves."

:「The Third Demon King laughed again and said, "To my two elder brothers: if the monk doesn't want us to see him off, and simply slips past this way, that will be his own good fortune;調。」 :「?」:「。」:「?」:「but if we do see him off, little does he know it will play right into my scheme of 'luring the tiger away from the mountain.'" The Old Demon King said, "What is this 'luring the tiger away from the mountain'?" The Third Demon King said, "Now muster all the demon host in the cave — out of ten thousand pick a thousand, out of a thousand pick a hundred, out of a hundred pick sixteen, and pick another thirty besides." The Old Demon King said, "Why do we need sixteen, and also thirty?" The Third Demon King said, "We need thirty who know how to cook, and give them fine rice, fine flour, bamboo shoots, tea sprouts, mushrooms, fungus, bean curd, and gluten, and have them set up shelters every twenty or thirty li to prepare tea and meals to serve Tang Seng." The Old Demon King said, "And what use are the sixteen for?" The Third Demon King said, "Have eight of them carry the sedan chair, and eight call out to clear the road.We three brothers will accompany him at his side and see him along part of the way.西Going west from here, some four hundred-odd li on, lies my own walled city, where I naturally have troops of my own ready to receive him.,……Once he reaches the city walls, ……in such and such a way, we'll see to it that master and disciples cannot look after one another, head and tail.。」Capturing Tang Seng will depend entirely on the success of these sixteen." Hearing this, the Old Demon King was overjoyed beyond measure;it was truly as if he had just woken from drunkenness, or just roused from a dream.:「!」He said, "Good, good, good!" and at once mustered the demon host, first selecting the thirty and giving them their supplies;then selected the sixteen, to carry a fragrant rattan sedan chair; and together they went out the gate.:「。」He further instructed the demon host: "None of you are to wander idly up the mountain — Sun Wukong is a suspicious monkey, and if he sees you coming and going, he will surely grow suspicious and see through this scheme."

:「。」:「?」:「。」:「The Old Demon King then led the host to the roadside and called out loudly, "Lord Tang, today is under no unlucky star — please, my lord, cross the mountain early." Hearing this, Sanzang said, "Wukong, who is that calling to me?" Wukong pointed and said, "That over there is the demon Old Sun subdued, come with a sedan chair to see you across." Sanzang pressed his palms together and said, facing heaven, "Merciful Heaven!Merciful Heaven!?」:「。」:「。」If it were not for my worthy disciple's such ability, how could I ever get through?" He went straight forward and bowed to the assembled demons, saying, "I am deeply grateful for the kindness of you all — when I, your disciple, fetch the scriptures and return east to Chang'an, I shall be sure to spread word of this good deed." The demons kowtowed and said, "Please, my lord, mount the sedan chair." Sanzang, with his mortal eyes and worldly flesh, had no idea it was all a trick. And the Great Sage Sun, though a Grand Monad Golden Immortal by nature loyal and upright, thought only of the merit of having captured and released the demon and subdued him — how could he have expected that they all harbored a hidden scheme? So he too failed to look into it carefully, and simply went along entirely with his master's wishes. He at once told Bajie to load the luggage onto the horse, and to follow close behind with Sha Monk.使He himself wielded his iron rod and went ahead to clear the way, watching all around for signs of good or ill fortune.Eight demons lifted the sedan chair, eight called out one after another to clear the road, and three of the demons walked alongside, steadying the chair poles. The master sat happily and contentedly upright in the sedan chair. They climbed the high mountain and proceeded along the main road.

On this journey, little did they know that amid their joy, sorrow was soon to come again.:「。」As the scripture says, "When peace reaches its extreme, stagnation is born again." Their fortune had met the true Grand Duke Jupiter, and now they encountered as well the stars of the Gate of Mourning and the Visitor of Condolence. That band of demons, of one heart and one mind, attended them on either side, diligent and attentive from morning to night.沿After traveling thirty li they offered a vegetarian meal, and after fifty li another meal; before nightfall they invited him to rest, everything along the way neat and orderly.滿Three meals a day, all to his heart's content;宿a fine night's lodging each evening, a comfortable place to rest.

Advancing westward some four hundred-odd li, suddenly a walled city came into view close at hand. The Great Sage, wielding his iron rod barely a li ahead of the sedan chair, caught sight of the city walls and was so startled that he stumbled and fell, struggling but unable to rise. You may ask, bold as he was, how could the mere sight of this so frighten him?It turned out that, gazing at the city, he saw a great deal of evil vapor rising from within it.It was thus:

Just as the Great Sage was gripped with dread, he suddenly heard the wind whistle behind his ear.He spun around at once to look, and saw that it was the Third Demon King, wielding a painted-shaft square-sky halberd with both hands, striking down at the Great Sage's head;使The Great Sage hastily flipped himself up and scrambled to his feet, meeting him head-on with his gold-banded rod.The two of them, each filled with fury, breathing hard with rage, exchanged not a word;gritting their teeth, each determined to fight the other.便At the same time, the Old Demon King gave the order, raised his steel saber, and struck at Bajie;Bajie, panicking, abandoned the horse and, swinging his rake, harrowed wildly forward. The Second Demon King wielded his long spear and thrust at Sha Monk;使Sha Monk used his demon-quelling staff, set his stance, and held him off.The three demon kings and the three monks, one matched against one, fought a desperate battle on the mountaintop, heedless of life or death.

:「。」The sixteen little demons, however, followed their orders and each did their part: they seized the white horse and the luggage, hustled Sanzang along, lifted up the sedan chair, and went straight to the city walls, calling out loudly, "By the Great King's plan, Tang Seng has already been captured and brought here!" All the demons great and small atop the city wall came running down and threw the city gates wide open.Orders were given to every camp to furl their banners and silence their drums, and not to shout or beat gongs.:「It was said, "The Great King gave orders beforehand that Tang Seng must not be frightened.。」Tang Seng cannot bear a fright — one scare and his flesh turns sour, no longer fit to eat." All the demons, overjoyed, welcomed Sanzang, bowing low and bending their backs to receive the master monk.殿They carried Tang Seng in his sedan chair up into the Golden Hall and invited him to sit in the center, while on one side tea and food were presented, with attendants circling about on either side. The elder, dazed and bewildered, looked up to find not a single familiar face.

In the end, whether his life would be spared or not is not yet known; listen to the next chapter for the explanation.

What it’s about

The struggle with the three kings continues through bargains neither side trusts. Wukong torments the blue lion from within and forces his release, then confronts the yellow-tusked elephant's coiling trunk. He lets himself be caught so that he can attack the sensitive trunk and compel another surrender. For a moment the lion and elephant agree to open the road, and Wukong summons the pilgrims forward under the appearance of a negotiated passage.

The promise is a trap. As Sanzang, Bajie and Sha Wujing approach, the demon armies surge out, separate the travelers and carry them into captivity. Wukong fights through the encirclement but cannot secure everyone against three coordinated rulers and their troops. The chapter turns his clever victories over individual bodies into a strategic defeat: pain can force a monster to speak peace, but it cannot make an entire predatory kingdom honor the terms.

When it was written 背景

This chapter tests the difference between tactical mastery and safe conduct. Wukong can exploit anatomy with comic precision, but the pilgrims must cross territory controlled by an army, not merely win a duel. The demons imitate diplomacy—swearing, opening a road and arranging passage—while treating agreement as another hunting device. Learners should watch 放行, 講和, 捉 and 圍, which mark the rapid movement from negotiation to enclosure. The repeated reversals also discipline Wukong's confidence: knowing each king's weakness does not yet solve the collective problem represented by Lion-Camel state power.
