In Bhiksu Kingdom the Plot to Use Children's Hearts as Medicine

078Chapter 78

西The story goes that Sun Wukong, having exhausted every scheme, invited the Tathagata to subdue the demon horde, thereby freeing Sanzang and his disciples from their ordeal; they then left Shituo City and continued west.Several more months passed, and soon it was already winter.Behold:

Master and disciples braved the bitter cold, lodging in the rain and dining on the wind.As they journeyed on, they caught sight of another walled city.:「?」:「Sanzang asked, "Wukong, what place is that ahead?" Wukong said, "Once we get there we'll know for ourselves."西If it's a kingdom with its own royal seat in the west, we'll need to have our travel rescript renewed and stamped;。」if it's merely a prefecture, department, or county, we'll simply pass on through."

Before master and disciple had finished speaking, they had already arrived outside the city gate.Sanzang dismounted, and the four of them together entered the outer barbican. They saw an old soldier dozing against a sun-facing wall, sheltering from the wind.:「。」:「。」:「Wukong went up close, shook him once, and called out, "Sir officer." The old soldier woke with a start, blinking his eyes open in a daze, and upon seeing Wukong hastily fell to his knees, kowtowing and crying, "Grandfather!" Wukong said, "Stop this nonsense and don't make a fuss."?」:「。」:「"I'm not some fierce god — why call me grandfather?" The old soldier kowtowed and said, "You're Lord Thunder!" Wukong said, "Nonsense."西"I am a monk from the Land of the East, on my way to the Western Heaven to fetch scriptures."。」:「"I've only just arrived and don't know the name of this place, so I'm asking you." Hearing this, the old soldier only then steadied his mind; he gave a yawn, scrambled to his feet, stretched his back, and said, "Elder, elder, forgive my offense."。」:「?」:「。」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「"This place was originally called Biqiu Country, but has now been renamed Xiaozi City." Wukong said, "Does the country have a monarch?" The old soldier said, "Yes, yes, indeed." Wukong then turned and said to Tang Sanzang, "Master, this place was originally Biqiu Country, now renamed Xiaozi City, though I don't know the reason for the change of name." Tang Sanzang said, puzzled, "If it was once called Biqiu, why now Xiaozi — 'little child'?" Bajie said, "I suppose the King of Biqiu has died, and the one newly set on the throne is a child, hence 'Child City.'" Tang Sanzang said, "That can't be right, that can't be right."。」:「"Let's go on in and ask again once we're in the streets." Sha Seng said, "Just so.""That old soldier, for one thing doesn't really know, and for another was so frightened by elder brother that he spoke nonsense."。」"Let's go into the city and inquire there."

They passed through three more gates and came to the great thoroughfare to look around; the people there were indeed neatly dressed and of refined appearance.Behold:

The four of master and disciples, leading the horse and carrying the load, walked through the streets and markets for a good long while, unable to take in all the bustling splendor, but noticed that every household's gate had a goose cage set before it.:「?」Sanzang said, "Disciples, why does every family here place a goose cage at their gate?" Hearing this, Bajie looked around left and right — indeed they were goose cages, each draped and curtained with five-colored silk.:「。」:「The idiot laughed and said, "Master, today must be an auspicious day, good for weddings and gatherings with friends — everyone's performing the rites." Wukong said, "Nonsense — how could every single household be performing rites?"。」:「。」:「。」"There must be some reason behind it — let me go up and take a look." Sanzang caught hold of him and said, "Don't go — your face is too hideous, I'm afraid people will take offense at you." Wukong said, "I'll transform myself and go."

Splendid Great Sage — he formed a hand-sign, recited a spell, shook himself, and transformed into a little bee; spreading its wings, it flew close, slipped in through the curtain to look, and found that seated inside was a small child. He went to look inside the cage of a second household, and it too held a small child. He checked eight or nine households in a row, and each one held a small child. All were boys — not a single girl among them. Some sat in their cages playing, others sat inside crying;some were eating fruit, some were dozing where they sat.:「滿。」Having seen enough, Wukong resumed his true form and reported back to Tang Sanzang, saying, "Those cages hold small children — the oldest not yet seven, the youngest only five. I don't know the reason." Hearing this, Sanzang was uneasy and could not settle his doubts.

Turning down a street, they suddenly came upon a government office — it was the Jinting Post Station.:「宿。」:「。」The elder said happily, "Disciples, let's go into this station: first, to ask about the place; second, to rest and feed the horse; third, since it's growing dark, to find lodging." Sha Seng said, "Just so, just so — let's go in quickly." The four of them went in gladly.Sure enough, the officials on duty reported to the station master, who came out to receive them at the gate, and all exchanged greetings.:「?」:「西。」Once seated, the station master asked, "Elder, where have you come from?" Sanzang said, "This poor monk was sent by the Great Tang of the Land of the East to fetch scriptures from the Western Heaven. Now that I have reached your honorable place, I have a travel rescript that ought to be examined and verified, and I would beg to borrow your esteemed office for a rest." The station master at once ordered tea to be brought. When the tea was finished, he immediately arranged provisions and ordered the attendants on duty to see to their hospitality.:「?」:「Sanzang expressed his thanks, then asked further, "Might I go to court today to have an audience and have my rescript verified?" The station master said, "Not this evening — you must wait for tomorrow's morning audience."。」"For tonight, please just rest comfortably here at my humble office for one night."

Shortly, everything was arranged, and the station master invited the four of them to eat a vegetarian meal together. He also had his men sweep out the guest rooms for them to rest.Sanzang was endlessly grateful.:「Once seated, the elder said, "This poor monk has one matter he does not understand and would like to ask about — please be so kind as to instruct me."。」:「"In your honorable region, how does one go about raising children — I wonder how it is regarded here?" The station master said, "Heaven has but one sun, and mankind but one set of principles.""In raising children — the father's essence and the mother's blood, ten months of pregnancy, and the child is born when its time comes.""Once born, it is nursed for three years, and gradually grows into its bodily form."。」:「"How could there be any different way?" Sanzang said, "By your honored account, it's no different from my own country.""But when this poor monk entered the city, I saw that the households along the streets each had a goose cage set out, with small children hidden inside."。」:「"This matter I do not understand, and so I dare to ask about it." The station master put his mouth to Sanzang's ear and whispered, "Elder, don't concern yourself with it, don't ask about it, don't pay it any mind, and don't speak of it."。」"Please settle in and rest, and set off on your way early tomorrow." Hearing this, the elder seized hold of the station master and insisted on getting a clear answer.:「。」The station master shook his head and wagged his finger, only saying, "Careful what you say!" Sanzang would not let go at all, and insisted stubbornly on hearing the full details.Having no choice, the station master had to dismiss all the officials and attendants present.:「Alone beneath the lamplight, he spoke quietly, saying, "This matter of the goose cages that you just asked about concerns the misrule of the present monarch."?」:「"Why must you insist on asking about it?" Sanzang said, "What do you mean by misrule?"。」:「"You must explain it to me clearly before my mind can be at ease." The station master said, "This country was originally Biqiu Country; recently, because of a popular ballad, it was renamed Xiaozi City.""Three years ago, an old man, got up in the guise of a Daoist, brought along a young girl just sixteen years of age.""The girl was delicate and lovely in appearance, with a face like Guanyin's, and she was presented as tribute to the present sovereign. His Majesty, loving her beauty, favored her within the palace and gave her the title of Beauty Consort.""Of late he has not so much as glanced properly at the three palace queens or the consorts of the six courts.""Day and night without distinction, he indulges in pleasure without end.""Now he has worn himself into a state of exhausted spirit, an emaciated and feeble body, taking little food or drink, his life hanging by a thread.""The Imperial Medical Bureau has gone through every good prescription, but none can cure him.""That Daoist who presented the girl received a patent of nobility from our lord and is titled the National Grandfather.""The National Grandfather possesses secret formulas from beyond the seas that are extremely effective at prolonging life.""Some time ago he went to the Ten Continents and Three Isles to gather medicine, and has now brought it all back complete.""The only trouble is that the drug's guiding ingredient is fearsome: it calls for the hearts and livers of exactly one thousand one hundred and eleven small children, to be boiled into a broth and taken with the medicine.""Once taken, it has the power to grant a thousand years without aging.""All these children in the goose cages have already been selected and are being kept inside them.""The parents of these households, fearing the law of the king, none dare to weep aloud, and so a rumor spread and the place came to be called 'Small Children City.'"。」退"Elder, when you go to court tomorrow morning, go only to have your rescript renewed — do not mention this matter at all." Having said this, he withdrew and left.

The elder was so shocked that his bones went weak and his sinews numb, and he could not stop the tears falling down his cheeks.:「Suddenly he cried out involuntarily, "Benighted ruler, benighted ruler!""Because of your greed for pleasure and love of beauty you have brought this illness upon yourself — how can you wrongly destroy the lives of so many young children?"!」"How bitter, how bitter — it grieves me to death!" There is a poem as testimony. The poem reads:

:「Bajie came forward and said, "Master, what's come over you?""You're carrying someone else's coffin into your own house just to cry over it.""Don't trouble yourself so.":『"As the saying goes: 'If the ruler bids the minister die, and the minister does not die, he is disloyal;'"。』if the father bids the son perish, and the son does not perish, he is unfilial.' Whoever he harms, they are his own subjects — what has that to do with you?"。」:「"Come now, loosen your robe and go to sleep — don't go worrying yourself over other people's affairs." Sanzang, tears falling, said, "Disciple, you are a man without compassion."便"For us who have left the household life, accumulating merit through good deeds, the first thing is to act with mercy wherever we can.""How can this benighted ruler act so recklessly?""Never in all my life have I heard that eating human hearts and livers can prolong life."?」:「"Faced with such a thing, how could I not grieve?" Sha Seng said, "Master, do not grieve just yet."覿"Wait until tomorrow morning when you renew the rescript, and speak of it face to face with the king.""If he will not listen, then we shall see just what sort of a National Grandfather this is."。」"Perhaps that National Grandfather is in fact some demon who wishes to eat human hearts and livers, and has devised this scheme for that purpose — there's no telling."

:「Wukong said, "Wujing speaks with reason.""Master, go to sleep for now. Tomorrow let old Monkey go with you into the court, and we'll see whether this National Grandfather is good or ill.""If he turns out to be human, then I fear he has merely strayed onto a heterodox path, ignorant of the true Way, mistaking the mere gathering of medicine for the real thing — in which case old Monkey will use the essential principles of the primordial Dao to convert him back to righteousness;"。」:「"and if he is a demon, I shall seize him and show him to this king, so as to teach him to curb his desires and nurture his body — I will certainly not let him harm the lives of those children." Hearing this, Sanzang hastily bowed and, turning to Wukong, made him a gesture of respect, saying, "Disciple, this plan is excellent, truly excellent."便?」:「"But when we see the benighted ruler, we mustn't ask about this matter outright — I fear he, unable to distinguish near from far, might lump it together as mere rumor and hold us to blame. What then shall we do?" Wukong laughed and said, "Old Monkey has his own powers for this.""For now, I'll first spirit the children away from this city in their goose cages, so that tomorrow there will be nothing from which to take hearts, and the local officials will naturally submit a memorial about it.""That benighted ruler is bound to issue some decree — either he'll consult with the National Grandfather, or he'll order a fresh selection to be reported."。」"At that point, we can use the matter as an occasion to speak up, and there will certainly be no blame placed upon us." Sanzang was overjoyed.:「He then asked further, "But how can the children be gotten out of the city now?""If they can truly be delivered, it will be an act of virtue as great as heaven from you, my worthy disciple."。」:「。」:「"Please act quickly — any delay and it may be too late." Wukong roused his divine might, rose at once, and instructed Bajie and Sha Seng, "Sit here with the master while I go to work. When you see a dark wind rise, that will mean the children are being taken out of the city." The three of them together began chanting in unison, "Homage to the Life-Saving Medicine Buddha!"!」"Homage to the Life-Saving Medicine Buddha!"

」,:「?」:「The Great Sage went out the gate, gave a whistle, and rose into midair; forming a hand-sign and reciting the true words, he called out "Om, purify the Dharma realm," summoning the City God, the Local Earth God, the Village Overseer, the Guardian Officer, together with the Guardians of the Five Directions, the Four Duty Officers, the Six Dings and Six Jias, and the Guardians of the Faith — all of them gathered in the sky and bowed to him, saying, "Great Sage, you have summoned us in the night — what urgent matter is it?" Wukong said, "Today, passing through Biqiu Country, I find that its king is without virtue, has given ear to a demon, and means to take the hearts and livers of small children as a drug ingredient, hoping thereby for long life.""My master cannot bear it, and wishes to save the living and destroy the demon."使"And so old Monkey has especially requested all of you to each use your divine powers, and together with me, spirit the children away — cages and all — from every household's goose cage in this city, out beyond the walls to some mountain hollow or deep in the forest, to be kept hidden there for a day or two. Give them some fruit to eat so they do not go hungry;"使"and further, watch over them secretly, so that they are not made to feel frightened and cry."。」"Wait until I have rid the place of the demon, set the country in order, and persuaded the king to correct his ways — then, when it is time for us to leave, bring them back and return them to me."

Hearing the order, the assembled gods at once each employed their divine powers and brought down their clouds.滿Throughout the entire city, a dark wind rolled and a dismal mist spread far and wide:

There is a poem as testimony, which reads:

That night, at around the third watch, the assembled gods spirited the goose cages away and hid them safely in various places.

Wukong brought down his auspicious light and went straight to the courtyard of the post station, where he heard the three of them still chanting, "Homage to the Life-Saving Medicine Buddha.":「He too was secretly delighted at heart, and coming forward called out, "Master, I'm back."?」:「。」:「?」:「。」"How was that dark wind that rose?" Bajie said, "Quite a wind indeed." Sanzang said, "And the matter of saving the children — how did it go?" Wukong said, "They've all been saved and taken out, every one of them — we'll have them returned to us when we set off again." The elder thanked him again and again, and only then went to bed.

:「。」:「。」:「。」:「。」When day broke, Sanzang awoke, and having gotten himself fully ready, said, "Wukong, I'll go now while the morning court is in session, to have the rescript renewed." Wukong said, "Master, if you go alone I fear it may not go well — let old Monkey go along with you, so we can see whether that National Grandfather is evil or upright." Sanzang said, "If you go you won't be willing to perform the proper courtesies, and I'm afraid the king will take offense." Wukong said, "I won't show myself — I'll follow you in secret, so as to protect you." Sanzang was greatly pleased, and instructing Bajie and Sha Seng to watch over the baggage and the horse, he then set out.The station master came again to see him off, and noticed that the elder, now dressed for the occasion, looked quite different from the day before.Behold him:

Once the station master had finished exchanging greetings, he put his mouth to Sanzang's ear and whispered once more, urging him only not to meddle in matters that were not his concern.Sanzang nodded and murmured his assent. The Great Sage slipped aside by the gate, recited a spell, shook himself, and transformed into a tiny gnat; with a faint buzz, he flew up and landed on Sanzang's hat. They left the post station and headed straight for the court.

When they reached the outside of the court gate, seeing a Palace Gate Officer there, Sanzang at once made a bow and said, "This poor monk was sent by the Great Tang of the Land of the East to fetch scriptures from the Western Heaven."。」"Now that I have arrived in your honored land, I should by rights have my travel rescript renewed and stamped, and I wish to have an audience with His Majesty — I humbly beg you to announce me, announce me." The Yellow Gate officer did indeed go in to report.:「。」The king said joyfully, "A monk who has come from so far must surely possess the Way." He bade them invite him in.The Yellow Gate officer, obeying the decree once more, ushered the elder inside.殿Having paid his respects below the steps, the elder was then invited up onto the hall and given a seat. The elder again thanked him for the favor and sat down.He saw that the king looked sickly and emaciated, his spirit weary and worn — when he raised his hands, his bows and courtesies came out awkward and uneven;and when he spoke, his voice broke and faltered. The elder presented his travel rescript, and the king, his eyes dim and clouded, looked it over again and again before finally taking up the treasure seal, affixing his signature, and handing it back to the elder. The elder received it and put it away.

:「。」The king was just about to ask the reason for his scripture-seeking journey when he heard the duty officer report, "The Royal Preceptor has arrived, Your Lordship." At once the king, supported by a young eunuch attendant, struggled down from his dragon couch and bowed low to receive him.Startled, the elder hastily rose and stood aside.Turning to look, he saw it was an old Taoist, swaggering in from before the jade steps.Behold him:

When the Royal Preceptor reached the front of the throne hall, he made no obeisance at all, but strode up onto the hall proud and overbearing.:「。」The king rose slightly and said, "Royal Preceptor, your immortal footsteps — how happy I am that you have descended so early today." And he invited him to sit on the embroidered stool to his left.

?」Sanzang stepped forward, bowed, and said, "Royal Preceptor, sir, this poor monk greets you." The Royal Preceptor sat there erect and lofty, not returning the courtesy, and turned his face toward the king instead, saying, "Where does this monk come from?" The king said, "He is sent by the Tang court of the Land of the East to fetch scriptures from the Western Heaven, and has now come to have his travel rescript inspected and stamped." The Royal Preceptor laughed and said, "The road to the West is dark and boundless — what good could there be in it?" Sanzang said, "Since ancient times the West has been a supreme realm of ultimate bliss — how could it not be good?" The king then asked, "I have heard it said from ancient times: 'A monk is a disciple of the Buddha.' I truly do not know — can becoming a monk keep one from dying, and can devotion to the Buddha bring long life?" Hearing this, Sanzang quickly pressed his palms together and answered:

Hearing this, the Royal Preceptor merely gave a laugh in response.:「滿Pointing his finger at Tang Monk, he said, "Ha ha ha, this monk of yours talks utter nonsense. In the gate of quiescent extinction, one must speak of realizing one's nature. You do not even know whence that nature is extinguished, and you sit there dry and withered contemplating Chan — it is nothing but blind cultivation and reckless practice.:『As the common saying goes: 'Sit, sit, sit — until your backside splits open,。』and the fire scorches and simmers you until it turns to disaster.' And you know still less of this method of mine:

Hearing this, the king was exceedingly delighted. All the officials of the court cried out in praise, "Well said — 'Only the Way alone deserves honor,' 'Only the Way alone deserves honor.'" Seeing everyone praising the Royal Preceptor, the elder felt an overwhelming shame.祿西The king then ordered the Court of Imperial Entertainments to prepare a vegetarian feast, to see the monk who had come from afar off out of the city and on his way west.退Sanzang thanked him for the favor and withdrew.殿:「No sooner had he come down from the hall and started outward than Wukong flew down from the top of his hat and, coming to his ear, called out, "Master, this Royal Preceptor is a demon fiend, and the king has been poisoned by his demonic influence.。」You go on ahead to the post-house and wait for the meal — let old Monkey stay here and listen for news of him." Sanzang understood, and went alone out through the court gate; no more of that for now.

:「Watch now as Wukong, with a single flap of his wings, flew into the Hall of Golden Bells and lodged himself upon the kingfisher-feather screen. Just then, from among the ranks of officials, the Commissioner of the Five Wards' Troops stepped forward and reported, "Your Majesty, last night a gust of cold wind swept away the young children from the goose-cages in every ward and household, cages and all, leaving not a trace." Hearing this report, the king was both alarmed and enraged, and said to the Royal Preceptor, "This must be Heaven's will to destroy me.?」:「For months now my illness has grown severe, and the royal physicians have been of no avail. Fortunately the Royal Preceptor bestowed an immortal prescription, and I was waiting expressly for today, the hour of noon, to perform the incision and take the hearts and livers of these children as the guiding ingredient. How could I have expected them to be swept away by a cold wind? If this is not Heaven wishing to destroy me, what is it?" The Royal Preceptor laughed and said, "Your Majesty, do not trouble yourself with worry yet.。」:「?」:「That these children were swept away is in fact Heaven sending Your Majesty long life." The king said, "Seeing the children in the cages swept away, how can you instead say that Heaven has sent long life?" The Royal Preceptor said, "Just now as I entered the court, I caught sight of a most wondrous guiding ingredient, one far superior to the hearts of those eleven hundred and eleven children. The hearts of those children would only extend Your Majesty's life by a thousand years;。」:「but this guiding ingredient, taken with my immortal elixir, could extend it by ten thousand times ten thousand years." The king had no idea at all what this guiding ingredient might be, and asked again and again, until at last the Royal Preceptor said, "That monk sent from the Land of the East to fetch scriptures — I observed that his bearing is pure and his countenance well-formed; he is the true incarnation of one who has cultivated through ten lifetimes. Having been a monk since childhood, his primal yang has never been dispersed, making him ten thousand times superior to those children.。」:「If we could obtain his heart and liver to decoct into a broth, and take it together with my immortal elixir, it would fully secure ten thousand years of life for you." Hearing this, the befuddled king believed it completely and said to the Royal Preceptor, "Why did you not say so sooner?。」:「If it truly works so well, I should have kept him just now instead of letting him go." The Royal Preceptor said, "What difficulty is there in that?祿You just now ordered the Court of Imperial Entertainments to prepare a meal for him, so he is certain to eat the meal before leaving the city. Now quickly issue a decree to have every gate shut tight, muster troops to surround the Golden Pavilion post-house, and have that monk brought here. You should first request his heart with proper courtesy. If he consents, then cut it out from him at once, give his corpse a royal burial, and even build him a shrine to receive offerings and worship;but if he refuses, then treat him roughly — bind him at once and cut it open to take it out.?」What difficulty is there in that?" The befuddled king did just as he was told, and immediately issued a decree to have every gate shut.He also dispatched officers and soldiers of the Yulin Guard, both high and low, to surround the post-house.

:「。」Hearing this news, Wukong flapped his wings and flew straight to the post-house, resumed his true form, and said to Tang Monk, "Master, disaster, disaster!" Sanzang had just received the royal meal together with Bajie and Sha Monk, and upon suddenly hearing these words, he was so terrified that his three corpse-spirits scattered and smoke seemed to rise from his seven orifices; he collapsed into the dust, drenched in sweat all over, his eyes unable to fix on anything, his mouth unable to speak.:「。」:「Alarmed, Sha Monk rushed forward to support him, calling out again and again, "Master, wake up! Master, wake up!" Bajie said, "What disaster is it?What disaster is it?便。」:「You could have just told it slowly instead of frightening the master like this." Wukong said, "After the master left the court, old Monkey turned back to watch, and saw that the Royal Preceptor is a demon spirit.A little while later, the Commissioner of the Five Wards' Troops came to report the matter of the cold wind sweeping away the children.:『。』Just as the king was growing angry, that fellow turned it into cause for joy, saying, 'This is Heaven sending you long life.' He wants to take the master's heart and liver to use as a guiding ingredient, saying it can extend the king's life for ten thousand years.。」:「。」That befuddled king believed these slanderous words, and so has mustered crack troops to surround the post-house, and sent a Brocade-robed officer to fetch the master and beg for his heart." Bajie laughed and said, "Fine mercy we showed, fine children we saved, fine dark wind we conjured — and now this time we've run straight into disaster."

:「?」:「。」:「』?」:「。」:「。」:「。」:「。」使Sanzang scrambled up trembling, clutched at Wukong, and begged piteously, "Worthy disciple, ah, what is to be done about this?" Wukong said, "If you want things to turn out well, let the elder become the junior." Sha Monk said, "What do you mean, 'let the elder become the junior'?" Wukong said, "If you want to preserve your life, the master must become the disciple and the disciple become the master — only then can we keep you safe." Sanzang said, "If you can save my life, I would gladly become your disciple, and my disciple's disciple as well." Wukong said, "Since that's so, there's no need to hesitate." He told Bajie, "Quick, mix up some mud." That fool at once used his muck-rake to dig up some earth. But not daring to go outside for water, he then hitched up his robe, made water on it, and kneaded it into a lump of stinking mud, which he handed to Wukong.Having no other choice, Wukong flattened the mud into a sheet and pressed it onto his own face, fashioning a mask in the shape of a monkey's face.He told Tang Monk to stand up, hold still, and not say a word.:「!」He stuck it onto Tang Monk's face, recited a true spell, blew a breath of immortal air, and cried, "Change!" And at once the elder was transformed into the likeness of Wukong.穿He took off the elder's robe and put Wukong's robe on him instead.穿Wukong then put on his master's robe, formed a mudra with his fingers, recited an incantation, and with a shake of his body transformed his face into the likeness of Tang Monk's.Even Bajie and Sha Monk could scarcely tell them apart.

Just as they finished this disguise in perfect coordination, they heard gongs and drums sounding together, and saw spears and blades crowding in.It turned out to be officers of the Yulin Guard, leading three thousand soldiers who had surrounded the post-house.:「?」:「。」:「。」Then they saw a Brocade-robed officer stride into the courtyard of the post-house and ask, "Where is the elder from the Tang court of the Land of the East?" The station master, trembling with fright, fell to his knees and pointed, saying, "In the guest chamber below." The Brocade-robed officer went straight to the guest chamber and said, "Elder Tang, our king requests your presence." Bajie and Sha Monk flanked the false Wukong on either side to guard him.:「?」:「。」Then they saw the false Tang Monk come out the door, bow, and say, "My lord of the Brocade Robe, His Majesty summons this poor monk — what does he wish to say?" The Brocade-robed officer stepped forward, seized him by the arm, and said, "Come with me into the court — no doubt he has some use for you." Ah!This is truly:

In the end, we do not know just how this journey will turn out for his very life; listen to the next chapter, in which all shall be explained.

What it’s about

The pilgrims enter Bhiksu Kingdom and see cages holding more than a thousand boys. An official explains that the aging king, urged by a beautiful queen and her father, plans to use children's hearts as medicine. Wukong releases the children by sending them away under a protective wind, then disguises himself as Sanzang when the court decides that the holy monk's heart could replace all the missing victims.

Before the king and his sinister father-in-law, the disguised Wukong performs a grotesque lesson in anatomy, claiming to possess many hearts for different moral impulses. He survives the threatened cutting and challenges the proposed cure, while the real Sanzang remains hidden. Investigation points toward the queen and her father as animal spirits who have turned royal fear of death into policy. The chapter stops with their deception exposed enough for combat, but before the kingdom is fully cleansed.

When it was written 背景

Bhiksu Kingdom makes bad medicine a crisis of government. A ruler's desire for longevity converts children into ingredients, and bureaucratic obedience places cages in public view. Wukong answers sacrificial logic first with rescue, then with satirical multiplication: his inventory of metaphorical hearts turns the physical organ into a vocabulary of greed, loyalty, kindness and deceit. Learners should distinguish 心 as flesh from 心 as intention while following 小兒, 藥引 and 長生. The episode sharply contrasts Sanzang's singular sacred body with the many ordinary young lives the court has treated as exchangeable.
