Monkey Battles the Demon Who Stole the Queen

069Chapter 69

The tale tells how Sun the Great Sage, together with the eunuch in attendance, went into the palace's inner court, and did not stop until he stood outside the door of the royal bedchamber.:「穿。」He handed the three gold threads to the eunuch to take inside, instructing him: "Have the palace consorts, or the eunuchs in attendance, first tie one end around His Majesty's left wrist, over the cun, guan, and chi positions, and then pass the other end of the thread out through the lattice window to me." The eunuch indeed did as instructed, seating the king upon the dragon bed, tying the gold thread at the cun, guan, and chi positions, and leading the other end out through the window.Sun Wukong took hold of the thread's end, and first, using the thumb of his own right hand to support his index finger, felt the cun pulse;next he pressed his middle finger against his thumb, and felt the guan pulse;then he used his thumb to steady his ring finger, and felt the chi pulse.調He composed his own breathing, distinguishing the four qi, the five stagnations, the seven exterior and eight interior signs, the nine indicators, the floating, middle, and sunken positions, and the sunken-within-floating and floating-within-sunken, discerning clearly the signs of deficiency and excess. He then had the thread untied from the left wrist and, as before, tied it around the position on the right wrist.Sun Wukong then used the fingers of his left hand to diagnose each position in turn from the start, and when finished, gave his body a shake and drew the gold thread back up onto himself.:「In a stern, loud voice he proclaimed: "Your Majesty's left-hand cun pulse is strong and taut, the guan pulse is rough and slow, and the chi pulse is hollow and sunken;the right-hand cun pulse is floating and slippery, the guan pulse is retarded and knotted, and the chi pulse is rapid and firm. Now, when the left cun is strong and taut, it means an inner emptiness causing heart pain;when the guan is rough and slow, it means sweating and numbness of the flesh;便便when the chi is hollow and sunken, it means the urine is red and the stool is tinged with blood. As for the right hand, when the cun pulse is floating and slippery, it means an internal knotting that has blocked the menses;宿when the guan is retarded and knotted, it means old food and retained fluids;滿when the chi is rapid and firm, it means vexation and fullness contending with an underlying cold deficiency.。」滿:「Diagnosing this esteemed illness, it is a case of fright, fear, and brooding anxiety, a condition called 'A Pair of Birds Parted from the Flock.'" When the king inside heard these words, his heart filled with joy, and mustering his spirits he called out loudly in reply: "Read from the pulse most clearly, read from the pulse most clearly—this is indeed the ailment.。」Please go out and prepare the medicine now."

The Great Sage then walked slowly back out of the palace.Already the eunuchs who had been listening nearby had gone ahead and reported to the assembled officials. In a moment Sun Wukong came out, and Tang Seng at once asked how it had gone.:「。」:「?」:「?」:「Sun Wukong said, "I have taken the pulse; now I am to prepare medicine matched to the symptoms." The officials came forward and said, "Just now the divine monk, the elder, spoke of the illness called 'A Pair of Birds Parted from the Flock'—what does that mean?" Sun Wukong laughed and said, "There were a hen bird and a cock bird, originally flying together in one place, when suddenly a violent storm of wind and rain startled them apart; the hen could not see the cock, and the cock could not see the hen; the hen then longed for the cock, and the cock too longed for the hen—is this not 'a pair of birds parted from the flock'?" When the officials heard this explanation, they all cried out in praise together: "Truly a divine monk!!」Truly a divine physician!" And they praised him without end.:「?」:「。」:「:『。』At that point the Imperial Physician asked, "The condition of the illness has now been discerned, but we do not know what medicine should be used to treat it?" Sun Wukong said, "There is no need to hold to a fixed prescription—whatever medicines are available will do." The physician said, "The classics say: 'There are eight hundred and eight kinds of medicine, and mankind has four hundred and four kinds of illness.' The illness does not reside all at once in one person's body, so how could there be reason to use every medicine in full??」:「:『。』便。」How can you say that whatever medicine is available will do?" Sun Wukong said, "The ancients said: 'Medicine need not hold to a fixed prescription; it should be used as is fitting.' That is why I am having the full range of medicines gathered, so that I may add and subtract as convenient."

The physician had nothing further to say, and went straight out through the palace gate, dispatching the men on duty at his own bureau to notify every medicine shop in the city, both those selling raw and those selling prepared herbs, to bring their medicines at once.Three catties of each kind were to be prepared and sent to Sun Wukong.:「。」Sun Wukong said, "This is not the place to prepare the medicine. Have the full quantities of all the medicines, along with all the vessels needed for preparing medicine, sent to the Meeting Hall Inn, and handed over to my two fellow disciples to receive." The physician obeyed the order, and had all eight hundred and eight kinds of medicine, three catties of each, together with the medicine roller, medicine mill, medicine sieve, medicine pestle, along with mortars and pestles for grinding, and the like, all sent to the inn, where each item was handed over and received one by one.

Sun Wukong went up to the throne hall to ask his master to come with him to the inn to prepare the medicine. The elder was just then rising to go when suddenly word came from within the palace, an edict instructing the ministers to keep the Dharma Master there, to lodge together with him at Wenhua Hall.He was to wait until the next morning, after the medicine had been taken; once the illness was cured, the king would offer thanks and have his travel rescript exchanged and endorsed to send him on his way.:「Sanzang was greatly alarmed and said, "Disciple, ah, the meaning of this is that they are keeping me as a hostage. If the cure succeeds, I shall be sent off joyfully;but if the cure fails, my life is finished.。」:「。」You must be careful and attentive, and prepare the medicine with utmost sincerity and care." Sun Wukong laughed and said, "Master, set your mind at ease and enjoy yourself here—old Monkey has a hand for curing kingdoms."

The good Great Sage took leave of Sanzang, bid farewell to the assembled ministers, and went straight to the inn.:「。」:「?」:「。」:「?」:「Zhu Bajie met him with a laugh and said, "Elder brother, I know what you're up to." Sun Wukong said, "What do you know?" Bajie said, "I know that since your quest for the scriptures has come to nothing, and you want to make a living with no capital, and seeing today how prosperous this place is, you're scheming to open a medicine shop." Sun Wukong shouted, "Don't talk nonsense! Once I've cured the king, I'll take my leave in triumph and be on my way—what medicine shop would I open?" Bajie said, "It can't be otherwise—these eight hundred and eight kinds of medicine, three catties each, come to a total of two thousand four hundred and twenty-four catties. To treat just one person, how much could you possibly use?。」:「Who knows how many years it would take to finish it all." Sun Wukong said, "What need is there to use so much?。」Those officials of the Imperial Medical Bureau are all a bunch of ignorant fools, and that is exactly why I had so many medicines gathered—to leave them with nothing to grasp hold of, unable to tell which few kinds I actually use, so they cannot fathom my marvelous prescription."

:「?」使:「Just as they were speaking, two inn stewards were seen kneeling right before them, saying, "We beg the divine monk, sir, to come in for the evening meal." Sun Wukong said, "This morning you treated me in such a manner, and now you kneel to invite me—why is that?" The inn stewards kowtowed and said, "When you first arrived, sir, we had eyes but no pupils, and failed to recognize your honored countenance.。」Now we have heard that you, sir, have displayed your threefold healing skill and are treating the ruler of our entire kingdom; if His Majesty's illness is cured, you, sir, will have a share in this kingdom's fortunes, and we shall all be your subjects—by rights we ought to bow and invite you." Hearing this, Sun Wukong went up cheerfully to take the seat of honor in the hall;Bajie and Sha Seng sat down on either side.便:「?」:「When the meal was laid out, Sha Seng asked, "Elder brother, where is Master now?" Sun Wukong laughed and said, "Master is being kept by the king as a hostage.。」:「?」:「Only once his illness is cured will thanks be offered and Master sent on his way." Sha Seng then asked, "Is he being well looked after?" Sun Wukong said, "How could the king fail to look after him? :「使When I left, he already had three grand secretaries in attendance beside him, and had been invited into Wenhua Hall." Bajie said, "In that case, Master's lot is still the grander—he has grand secretaries in attendance, while we get only two inn stewards to wait on us.。」Never mind that, though—let old Hog eat his fill." And so the brothers settled in and enjoyed themselves.

The sky grew dark. 使Sun Wukong called to the inn stewards: "Clear away the dishes, and prepare plenty of oil and candles—once night falls and all is quiet, we shall be ready to prepare the medicine." The stewards duly sent a good quantity of oil and candles, and then each was dismissed to disperse.

By midnight, the streets of the capital were still and quiet, and all sounds had died away.:「Bajie said, "Brother, what medicine are we making?。」:「。」:「Let's get on with it quickly—I'm getting sleepy." Sun Wukong said, "Fetch one liang of rhubarb and grind it into a fine powder." Sha Seng then said, "Rhubarb is bitter in flavor and cold, nontoxic, in nature. Its nature is to sink rather than float, and its action is to move rather than to hold.It clears away stagnations without leaving obstruction, and settles disorder to bring about peace.』。It is named the 'General.'。」:「It is a purgative medicine, but I fear that in a case of long illness and weakness, it should not be used." Sun Wukong laughed and said, "Worthy brother, you don't understand. This medicine dissolves phlegm and smooths the qi, sweeping away the congealed cold and heat within the belly.Don't concern yourself with me.。」:「Go and fetch one liang of croton seed, remove the husk and membrane, pound out the toxic oil, and grind it into a fine powder." Bajie said, "Croton seed is acrid in flavor and hot, and toxic, in nature. It scrapes away hardened accumulations, sweeping out the deep cold lodged in the lungs and viscera;it opens blockages, clearing the pathways for water and grain.。」:「It is a general that storms the pass and seizes the gate—it must not be used lightly." Sun Wukong said, "Worthy brother, you don't understand either. This medicine breaks up knots and clears the bowels, and can treat swelling and bloating from fluid retention in the chest.使。」Prepare it quickly—I still have adjuvant and guiding ingredients to add to it."

:「?」:「。」:「。」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「。」 The two of them at once ground the two medicines fine, and said, "Elder brother, are the other several dozen kinds still to be used?" Sun Wukong said, "No need." Bajie said, "Eight hundred and eight kinds of medicine, three catties of each, and you use only these two liang—this is truly cheating people out of their goods." Sun Wukong took up a small flowered porcelain cup and said, "Worthy brother, say no more. Take this cup and scrape half a cupful of soot from the bottom of the cooking pot." Bajie said, "What is that wanted for?" Sun Wukong said, "It's needed in the medicine." Sha Seng said, "I have never seen pot soot used in medicine." Sun Wukong said, "Pot soot is called 'Frost of the Hundred Herbs'—it can regulate a hundred illnesses. You simply don't know it." The fool indeed scraped up half a cupful, and ground it fine as well.

:「?」:「。」:「Sun Wukong again handed the cup to him and said, "Go once more and fetch half a cupful of our horse's urine." Bajie said, "What is that wanted for?" Sun Wukong said, "It is needed to form the pills." Sha Seng laughed again and said, "Elder brother, this is no matter for jesting.尿Horse urine is rank and foul—how could it go into medicine?尿I have only ever seen vinegar paste used to form pills, or old rice paste used to form pills, or refined honey used to form pills, or else plain water used to form pills—when has anyone ever seen horse urine used to form pills?西That stuff is so rank and foul that a person with a weak spleen would vomit at a single whiff of it;?」:「and then, taking croton seed and rhubarb on top of it, you would have the person retching and purging both at once—is that something to jest about?" Sun Wukong said, "You don't understand the inner truth of it.西That horse of ours is no ordinary horse; he was originally a dragon of the Western Sea.便If he can be got to relieve himself, then whatever the illness, once it is taken, it will be cured at once.。」The only trouble is that it cannot be obtained in a hurry." When Bajie heard this, he indeed went over to the horse's side, where the horse lay sleeping, tilted over on the ground.尿The fool gave it a kick to rouse it, then crouched with the cup pressed beneath its belly, and waited a good while, but saw no sign of it passing water at all.:「He ran back and said to Sun Wukong, "Brother, ah, never mind treating the emperor for now—go quickly and treat the horse instead. :「。」:「。」That dead thing has dried up completely inside—there's no hope of getting even a drop of urine out of it." Sun Wukong laughed and said, "I'll go along with you." Sha Seng said, "I'll go and have a look too."

:「The three of them all went to the horse's side, and the horse sprang up, opened its mouth, and spoke in human speech, calling out sternly and loudly, "Elder brother, how could you not know?西退西I was originally a flying dragon of the Western Sea; because I violated the laws of Heaven, Bodhisattva Guanyin saved my life, sawed off my horns, stripped away my scales, and turned me into a horse, to carry Master to the Western Heaven to fetch the scriptures, so as to atone for my crime through merit.尿If I pass water into a stream, the fish swimming in that water will eat it and turn into dragons;尿if I pass water on a mountain, the plants on that mountainside will absorb its essence and turn into magic fungus, which immortal lads gather to prolong their lives.?」:「How could I be willing to cast it away lightly in a place as common and profane as this?" Sun Wukong said, "Brother, mind your words.西This is the kingdom of a ruler in the Western lands—it is not a common and profane place, nor is this a matter of casting it away lightly.:『。』As the common saying goes: 'Many hairs together make a fur coat.' We need it to treat the illness of this kingdom's very king.If the cure succeeds, all of us shall share in the glory;。」:「。」滿if not, I fear none of us will manage to leave this place unharmed." At that the horse called out, "Wait a moment." Watch him now—he lunged forward once, crouched back once, and gnashed his full set of teeth until they clicked and rattled, and only managed to force out a few drops before rising back up onto his feet.:「。」:「Bajie said, "This dead thing—it's as precious as liquid gold; a little more of it wouldn't hurt." But Sun Wukong, seeing there was a little less than half a cupful, said, "That's enough, that's enough.。」Take it away." And only then was Sha Seng pleased.

The three of them returned to the hall, mixed together all the ingredients prepared earlier, and rolled them into three large pills.:「。」:「。」Sun Wukong said, "Brothers, these are too big." Bajie said, "They're only the size of walnuts—if it were up to me eating them, it still wouldn't even make one mouthful." So they put them away in a small box, and the brothers lay down to sleep in their clothes. The night passed without incident, and soon it was dawn.

Now to tell of the king: bearing his illness, he held court, and having summoned Tang Seng to appear, he at once ordered the assembled officials to go quickly to the Meeting Hall Inn to pay their respects to the divine monk Sun the Elder and receive the medicine.

:「。」The many officials went at once to the inn, and bowing low before Sun Wukong, said, "Our king has specially ordered us to bow and receive the marvelous remedy." Sun Wukong called for Bajie to fetch the box, and lifting off the lid, handed it over to the officials.:「The officials inquired, "What is this medicine called?。」:「。」:「?」:「?」:「So that we may report properly back to the king." Sun Wukong said, "This is named Black Gold Elixir." Bajie and Sha Seng, off to the side, laughed secretly, saying, "Mixed with pot soot—how could it not be black gold?" The officials asked further, "What is it to be taken with?" Sun Wukong said, "There are two possible vehicles for this medicine.。」 One is easily obtained, being a decoction brewed from six substances, with which the medicine is to be taken." The officials asked, "What are these six substances?" Sun Wukong said, "The fart of a crow flying high in the empty sky, the urine of a carp swimming against a swift current, the face powder of the Queen Mother of the West, the ash refined in Laojun's own furnace, three pieces of a headscarf worn to tatters by the Jade Emperor, and five whiskers plucked from a trapped dragon.。」:「Brew these six things into a decoction to send down this medicine, and your king's grief and illness shall be cleared away in no time." When the officials heard this they said, "These are things unheard of in this world.?」:「。」:「。」 :「May we ask what the other vehicle is?" Sun Wukong said, "It is to be taken with rootless water." The officials laughed and said, "That one is easy to obtain." Sun Wukong said, "How is it easy to obtain, in your view?" The officials said, "Among the common folk here it is generally held that: to use rootless water, one takes a bowl or cup to the well or the river, scoops up the water, and hurries back with quick steps, letting the vessel touch the ground not once and never looking back, and then gives it to the sick person along with the medicine at home—that is rootless water." Sun Wukong said, "Water from a well or a river all has a root.。」:「This rootless water of mine is not that kind at all—it must be water that falls from the sky above and is drunk before it touches the ground; only then may it be called rootless water." The officials said again, "That too is easy enough.便。」We shall simply wait until the sky clouds over and rain falls, and then have the medicine taken."

They then bowed in thanks to Sun Wukong, and took the medicine back to present to the king.:「?」:「』,。」便The king was overjoyed, and at once ordered his attendants to bring it up close, and looking at it, asked, "What sort of pills are these?" The officials said, "The divine monk called it 'Black Gold Elixir,' to be taken with rootless water." The king then had the palace attendants sent to fetch rootless water.:「。」The officials said, "The divine monk said that rootless water is not that from a well or river, but only that which falls from the sky and has not touched the ground." The king at once summoned the duty official in attendance and issued an edict, ordering that Daoist masters be requested to pray for rain. The officials, obeying the order, went out and posted the proclamation—no more of that for now.

:「Now to tell of Sun Wukong: in the hall of the Meeting Hall Inn, he called to Zhu Bajie, "Just now I promised that the medicine could only be taken once water fallen from the sky was obtained—but in such urgency as this, how are we to get rainwater??」:「?」:「。」 I see that this king is truly a ruler of great worth and great virtue, so let us help him along with a bit of rain to take his medicine—what do you say?" Bajie said, "How shall we help?" Sun Wukong said, "Stand to my left, and serve as the Assisting Star." Then he called to Sha Seng: "Stand to my right, and serve as the Supporting Constellation.。」Let old Monkey help him to a bit of rootless water." The good Great Sage traced out the paces of the Dipper, recited a spell, and at once a patch of dark cloud appeared in the due east, gradually drawing near overhead.:「。」:「。」 :「。」:「A voice called out, "Great Sage, Ao Guang, Dragon King of the Eastern Sea, has come to pay his respects." Sun Wukong said, "I would not dare trouble you without cause—I have asked you here to help provide some rootless water for the king to take with his medicine." The Dragon King said, "When the Great Sage summoned me, nothing was said about needing water, and this small dragon came alone, without bringing any rain-making implements, nor any wind, cloud, thunder, or lightning—how then am I to bring down rain?" Sun Wukong said, "There is no need at present for wind, cloud, thunder, or lightning, nor is much rain needed at all—only a little water to serve as a vehicle for the medicine will do." The Dragon King said, "If that is so, then let me give two sneezes, and spit out a bit of saliva and drool, for him to take with his medicine." Sun Wukong was greatly pleased and said, "Excellent, excellent.。」There's no need to delay—let's act on it at once while there's time."

The old dragon, up in the sky, gradually lowered the dark cloud until it hung directly above the royal palace, and there, concealing his form, he spat out a mouthful of drool, which then turned into a sweet, timely rain. :「。」All the officials of the court cried out together in praise: "A thousand joys to our lord—Heaven itself has sent down sweet rain." The king at once issued an edict, ordering: "Fetch vessels to catch it—regardless of whether within the palace or without, and regardless of official rank, all are to wait and collect the immortal water, to save this humble sovereign." And behold—all the civil and military officials, together with the consorts of the three palaces and six courts, and the three thousand colorful maidens and eight hundred lovely girls, each one held up a cup or a saucer, raised a bowl or held out a plate, waiting to catch the sweet rain. The old dragon, up in midair, continued working his saliva into drizzle, never once leaving the vicinity of the palace, front and back. After nearly two hours had passed, the Dragon King took his leave of the Great Sage and returned to the sea.The assembled ministers gathered up the cups, bowls, and saucers—some having caught only one or two drops, some three or five drops, and some having caught none at all—and pouring them all together into one vessel, there was in all about three cupfuls, which was presented altogether to the imperial desk. Truly, an extraordinary fragrance filled the Golden Chime Hall, and a fine aroma drifted, wafting through the courts of the Son of Heaven.

The king took leave of the Dharma Master, and carrying the Black Gold Elixir together with the sweet rain into the palace, first swallowed one pill and drank one cup of the sweet rain;then he swallowed a second pill, and drank another cup of the sweet rain;a third time, and all three pills had been swallowed, and all three cups of the sweet rain had been sent down after them. Before long, his belly began to rumble, with a sound like a windlass turning that would not stop.He at once called for the chamber pot, and went to it three or five times in succession. After taking a little rice gruel, he sank down, leaning over, upon the dragon bed.Two consorts took the chamber pot to examine it, and found it beyond description filthy, full of phlegm and mucus — inside was a lump of glutinous rice.:「。」The consorts came before the dragon bed to report, 'The root of the illness has all been passed.' Hearing this, the king was overjoyed, and once again took in a meal of rice.

In a little while, he gradually felt his chest and heart at ease, his blood and breath in harmony, and at once his spirit became vigorous and his legs grew strong. He got down from the dragon bed, put on his court robes, and went straight up to the throne hall; seeing Tang Seng, he at once prostrated himself in worship. The elder hastily returned the courtesy.便:「When the bowing was done, he took hold of Tang Seng with his royal hand, and then instructed the cabinet ministers: 'Quickly draw up an invitation, and on it write the words "I bow again and kowtow" in my name; dispatch officials to respectfully invite the Master's three worthy disciples.' At the same time, throw open the East Pavilion, and have the Court of Imperial Entertainments lay out a banquet in thanks.' The assembled officials received the decree — those drafting the invitation drafted it, those arranging the banquet arranged it. Truly: when a nation commands the strength to topple mountains, all is accomplished in an instant.

:「Now, when Bajie saw the officials deliver the invitation, he was beside himself with joy and said, 'Brother, that really was a wonderful medicine.'。」:「:『。』'Now they've come to give thanks — this is all thanks to elder brother's achievement.' Sha Seng said, 'Second brother, what kind of talk is that? As the saying goes, "When one man has good fortune, the whole household benefits." We all took part in preparing the medicine here, so we all share in the merit.'。」'Just go and enjoy it, and stop talking so much.' Ah!Just watch — the brothers, all cheerful and delighted, went straight into the court.

The officials received and led them up to the East Pavilion, where they saw that Tang Seng, the king, and the chief ministers were already there arranging the banquet.Xingzhe, together with Bajie and Sha Seng, made a bow of greeting to their master. After that, all the officials arrived as well. They saw that at the head of the hall there were four vegetarian table settings, each a banquet where for every dish eaten, ten more stood on display. In front there was one meat table setting, likewise a spread of rare delicacies where for every dish eaten, ten more were on display. To the left and right there were four or five hundred single tables, truly arranged in perfect order:

The king raised a cup with his own royal hand and first seated Tang Seng.:「。」:「?」:「。」:「?」:「。」Sanzang said, 'This poor monk cannot drink wine.' The king said, 'It is a vegetarian wine — how would it be if the Master drank just this one cup?' Sanzang said, 'Wine is the very first precept of a monk's order.' The king, quite embarrassed, said, 'If the Master abstains from drinking, then with what may I show my respect?' Sanzang said, 'Let my three unruly disciples drink in my place.' Only then was the king pleased, and he turned the golden cup and handed it to Xingzhe.Xingzhe took the wine, made his bow to the assembly, and drank the cup.Seeing how readily he drank, the king offered him another cup.Xingzhe did not decline, and drank it too.:「。」The king laughed and said, 'Have a "Three Treasures" cup.' Xingzhe did not decline, and drank it too.The king then called for it to be poured again, for a 'Four Seasons' cup.

Bajie, standing to the side, seeing that the wine never reached him, could only gulp down his saliva.:「……」Then, seeing the king pressing wine on Xingzhe so insistently, he suddenly called out, 'Your Majesty, that medicine you took owed a debt to me too — there was a horse in that medicine...' When Xingzhe heard this, afraid the fool would let the secret slip, he hastily passed the cup in his hand to Bajie.Bajie took it and drank at once, and said nothing more.:「?」:「The king asked, 'The divine monk said there was a horse in the medicine — what horse was that?' Xingzhe took over the answer and said, 'This brother of mine has such a loose tongue — whenever he has a good tried-and-tested recipe, he simply must tell people about it.'。」:「'The medicine Your Majesty took this morning had aristolochia — "horse-bell vine" — in it.' The king asked the assembled officials, 'What sort of substance is aristolochia?'?」:「'What ailments can it cure?' At that a physician of the Imperial Medical Bureau standing by said, 'Your Majesty:'

:「The king laughed and said, 'Well used, well used indeed.'。」'Elder Zhu, drink another cup.' The fool said nothing more, but drank a "Three Treasures" cup as well. The king then also handed wine to Sha Seng, who likewise drank three cups, and then all took their seats in order.

After they had been feasting for some while, the king again raised a great goblet and offered it to Xingzhe.:「Xingzhe said, 'Your Majesty, please be seated.'。」:「'Old Sun will drink heartily as the rounds come, and would never dare decline.' The king said, 'The divine monk's kindness is as weighty as a mountain — I, the humble ruler, cannot thank you enough.'。」:「。」:「。」:「?」:「:『。』。」:「'In any case, do drink this one great cup — I have something to say.' Xingzhe said, 'Say what you have to say, and old Sun will gladly drink.' The king said, 'I have suffered for several years from an illness of worry and doubt, and it was only through the divine monk's one dose of the miraculous elixir that it was cleared away, so that I recovered.' Xingzhe laughed and said, 'Yesterday when old Sun examined Your Majesty, I already knew it was an illness born of worry and doubt, but I did not know just what the worry and doubt were about.' The king said, 'The ancients said, "A family's disgrace should not be spoken of outside." But since the divine monk is my benefactor, only if you promise not to laugh may I tell you.' Xingzhe said, 'How would I dare mock you?'。」:「?」:「。」:「。」 Please speak freely, there's no harm in it.' The king said, 'On the divine monk's journey east, I wonder through how many kingdoms you have passed?' Xingzhe said, 'Some five or six places.' The king asked further, 'In those other kingdoms, I wonder what titles are used for the queens?' Xingzhe said, 'In a king's court, the queens are all called the Chief Palace, the Eastern Palace, and the Western Palace.' The king said, 'I do not use those titles: I call the Chief Palace the Jinsheng Palace, the Eastern Palace the Yusheng Palace, and the Western Palace the Yinsheng Palace.'。」:「?」:「。」:「?」:「'At present only the Yin and Yu queens remain in the palace.' Xingzhe said, 'Why is the Jinsheng queen not in the palace?' The king, tears falling, said, 'She has been gone three years now.' Xingzhe said, 'Where did she go?' The king said, 'Three years ago, right at the Duanyang Festival, I and my consorts were all in the Sea Pomegranate Pavilion of the royal garden, undoing zongzi and inserting mugwort, drinking calamus and realgar wine, and watching the dragon-boat races.'姿'Suddenly a gust of wind arrived, and in midair a demon appeared, calling himself Saitaisui. He said he dwelt in Xiezhi Cave on Qilin Mountain, that the cave lacked a wife, and that having learned my Jinsheng queen was of beautiful and delicate appearance, he wished to make her his wife, and told me to hand her over at once;'滿'and said that if she were not offered up within three calls, he would first eat me, then eat all the ministers, and devour every last commoner in the whole city.''At that moment, worrying for my country and my people, I had no choice but to push the Jinsheng queen out beyond the Sea Pomegranate Pavilion, and with one roar the demon snatched her away.''Because of this I was struck with such fright that the zongzi I had eaten congealed and stuck inside me;''and moreover I brooded with worry day and night without rest — that is how this bitter illness came to plague me for three years.''Now, after taking the divine monk's miraculous elixir, I passed stool several times, and all of it was the matter that had been accumulated and blocked since three years ago — that is why I now feel my body sound and light, and my spirits as they once were.'!」'The very life I have today is entirely a gift from the divine monk — how could it be compared merely to the weight of Mount Tai!'

滿:「Hearing these words, Xingzhe was filled with delight, and swallowed the wine in the great goblet in two gulps, then asked the king with a smile, 'So this is the fright and worry Your Majesty has been through.''Now that you have met old Sun, fortunately you have obtained a cure.'?」:「?」:「?」:「。」:「?」:「?」:「'But I wonder, do you wish to have the Jinsheng queen brought back to the kingdom?' The king, tears falling, said, 'I have thought and longed for her earnestly, without day or night's rest, but there has simply been no one able to overcome the demon — how could there be any reason not to want her back in the kingdom?' Xingzhe said, 'What if old Sun were to go with you and subdue that evil demon?' The king knelt down and said, 'If you can rescue my queen, I am willing to lead the three palaces and nine consorts out of the city to become commoners, and hand over the entire kingdom's rivers and mountains, letting you become the emperor.' Bajie, standing to the side, seeing these words spoken and this bow performed, could not help bursting into loud laughter and saying, 'This emperor has lost all sense of propriety — how can he, for the sake of a wife, be willing to give up his kingdom, kneeling before a monk?' Xingzhe hurried forward and raised the king up, saying, 'Your Majesty, ever since the demon took the Jinsheng queen, has he come again in all this time?' The king said, 'He seized the Jinsheng queen at the Duanyang festival the year before last, and by the tenth month he came demanding two palace maids, saying they were to wait upon the lady; I at once offered up two;''and then, in the third month of last year, he came again demanding two more palace maids;''in the seventh month, he again demanded two more;''and this year, in the second month, he again demanded two more.'。」:「?」:「'I do not know when he will come again.' Xingzhe said, 'With him coming so often like this, are you people afraid of him?' The king said, 'Having seen him come so many times, I am, for one thing, afraid of him, and for another, I fear he may intend some harm.'。」:「?」'In the fourth month of last year, I ordered workmen to build a Demon-Avoiding Tower, and whenever I hear the wind roar, I know he is coming, and at once go with the two queens and nine consorts into the tower to hide.' Xingzhe said, 'If Your Majesty does not think it beneath you, would you take old Sun to have a look at this Demon-Avoiding Tower?' The king at once took Xingzhe by the left hand and rose from the banquet. All the officials rose to their feet together.:「Zhu Bajie said, 'Brother, you don't understand proper manners.'?」'Such fine royal wine left undrunk, breaking up the seats and the feast — what is there to go and look at?' Hearing this, the king knew at once that Bajie's concern was for his mouth, and so ordered the attending officials to carry out two vegetarian table settings with wine, to wait outside the Demon-Avoiding Tower.:「。」Only then did the fool stop clamoring, and, together with his master and Sha Seng, said with a laugh, 'Off to move the feast, then.'

A whole company of civil and military officials led the way, the king and Xingzhe walking hand in hand, and after passing through the palace and reaching the back of the royal garden, no tower, terrace, hall, or pavilion was to be seen at all.:「?」Xingzhe said, 'Where is the Demon-Avoiding Tower?' Before he had finished speaking, he saw two eunuchs take two red-lacquered poles and use them to pry up a square stone slab from the open ground.:「便The king said, 'This is the very place.'殿'Below here it is more than three zhang deep, with nine chambers dug out like a court hall.'滿'Inside there are four great vats, filled to the brim with clear oil, with lamps lit that burn without stopping day or night.'。」:「'Whenever I hear the wind roar, I go down inside to hide, while outside I have someone cover it with the stone slab.' Xingzhe laughed and said, 'That demon must not really mean to harm you;'?」'if he truly meant to harm you, how could you hide from him here?' Just as he was speaking, from due south came a roaring gust of wind, scattering earth and raising dust.:「。」The assembled officials were so startled that they cried out together in complaint, 'This monk has a jinxing mouth — no sooner does he speak of the demon than the demon comes!' In his panic the king let go of Xingzhe and at once dove into the underground chamber;Tang Seng followed him in as well;and all the officials likewise hid themselves completely away.

:「?」:「Bajie and Sha Seng also wanted to hide, but Xingzhe grabbed hold of the two of them with his left and right hands and said, 'Brothers, don't be afraid — let's you and I get a look at him and see just what sort of demon he is.' Bajie said, 'What nonsense — what's the use of getting a look at him?'?」'The officials have hidden, the master has hidden, the king has taken cover — let's just not go either; whose family honor are we showing off for?' The fool struggled left and right, but could not break free.Held firm by Xingzhe for a good while, they suddenly saw a demon flash into view in midair.Just look at what he looked like:

:「?」:「?」:「?」:「?」:「。」:「。」:「?」:「Seeing him, Xingzhe said, 'Sha Seng, do you recognize him?' Sha Seng said, 'I've never made his acquaintance — how would I recognize him?' He also asked, 'Bajie, do you recognize him?' Bajie said, 'I've never shared tea or wine with him, nor are we guests, friends, or neighbors — how could I recognize him?' Xingzhe said, 'He looks rather like that pallid-faced, golden-eyed ghost who guards the gate under the God of the Eastern Peak.' Bajie said, 'No, no, that's not it.' Xingzhe said, 'How do you know he isn't?' Bajie said, 'A ghost is a spirit of yin, and only comes out from the hours of shen, you, xu, and hai onward through the day into evening.''It's still the hour of si today — how would any ghost dare come out?''And even if it were a ghost, it wouldn't be able to ride the clouds.''Even if it could stir up wind, it would only be a whirlwind — would it produce a gale as wild as this?'。」:「'Perhaps he is Saitaisui himself.' Xingzhe laughed and said, 'Well, fool, that's actually got some sense to it.'。」:「。」'Since that's so, the two of you stand guard here, while old Sun goes to ask him his name and title, so as to help the king recover the Jinsheng queen and bring her back to court.' Bajie said, 'Go on then, but on no account give us away.' Xingzhe, holding his head high, made no reply, and at once rode up on an auspicious cloud, leaping into the sky.Ah!Truly:

In the end, we do not know, once he reached the sky, how the contest of victory and defeat turned out, nor how the demon was to be captured and the Jinsheng queen rescued — listen to the next chapter's explanation.

What it’s about

Wukong prepares the king's medicine at night, rolling the ingredients into pills and giving them the mock-grand name Black-Gold Elixir. The dose succeeds spectacularly, and a royal banquet celebrates the stranger physician. When officials ask about the deeper origin of the illness, the king recounts how Sai Tai Sui descended during a festival, seized the Golden-Sage Palace Lady and has demanded two new palace women each year since then.

Wukong offers to rescue the queen and confront the demon. At that moment Sai Tai Sui's messengers arrive for the latest attendants, allowing Wukong to gather intelligence and turn the kingdom's fearful ritual into an opening. He alters his appearance, questions those who know the demon's stronghold and prepares to go in place of a victim. Medical performance thus gives way to espionage, but both depend on making hidden causes speak before attempting a cure.

When it was written 背景

Vermilion-Purple Kingdom links sovereign health to the condition of the household and realm without making the king's grief merely allegorical. His recovery permits public narration of an outrage that the court has accommodated through recurring sacrifice. Banquet conversation is therefore investigative: once appetite and speech return, private trauma becomes a political problem demanding action. Learners should notice the contrast between Wukong's playful pharmaceutical names and the increasingly serious account of abducted women. The chapter also shifts his role smoothly from doctor to substitute victim and spy. His transformations are most effective when they interrupt an established system of tribute, not simply when they overpower a guard at the cave entrance.
