Revenge

The thickness of human skin is probably no more than half a fen; the bright red hot blood flows just behind it, coursing through blood vessels denser even than the locust silkworms crawling thick upon a wall, giving off its warmth. And so, with this warmth, they bewitch, incite, and draw one another on, desperately longing to nestle close, to kiss, to embrace, so as to attain the deep, intoxicated great joy of life.

But if one were to take a sharp, keen blade and, with a single stroke, pierce through this peach-pink, flimsy skin, one would see that bright red hot blood, like a shot arrow, pour all its warmth directly upon the killer;使next, it would give him its icy breath, show him its pale white lips, leaving him dazed out of his humanity, so that he attains the supreme great joy of life's soaring flight;while the victim itself would remain forever immersed in the supreme great joy of life's soaring flight.

Thus it is that the two of them stand with their whole bodies bared, gripping sharp blades, facing each other upon the vast and boundless wilderness.

……The two of them are about to embrace, about to kill……

Passersby come running from all four sides, thick and dense, like locust silkworms crawling up a wall, like ants swarming to hoist away a dried fish head.Their clothes are all fine, yet their hands are empty.Still they come running from all four sides, straining their necks for all they are worth, eager to savor this embrace or this slaughter. They can already anticipate, on their own tongues afterward, the fresh taste of sweat or of blood.

Yet the two of them merely stand facing each other, upon the vast and boundless wilderness, their whole bodies bared, gripping sharp blades, and yet they neither embrace nor kill, nor is there even a sign of any intention to embrace or to kill.

The two of them remain thus even unto eternity, their once supple bodies now on the verge of withering, yet showing not the least sign of any intention to embrace or to kill.

The passersby therefore grow bored;滿they feel boredom boring into their pores, feel boredom boring out from their own hearts through their pores, crawling to cover the whole wilderness, then boring again into the pores of others. Then they feel their throats and tongues grow dry, and their necks grow weary too;until at last they look at one another and slowly drift apart;until they even come to feel themselves withered to the point of having lost all zest for life.

Then there remains only the vast and boundless wilderness, and the two of them within it, their whole bodies bared, gripping sharp blades, standing there withered and dry;with the gaze of dead men, they savor the withered, bloodless great slaughter of these passersby, while remaining forever immersed in the supreme great joy of life's soaring flight.

What it’s about

Two people stand naked on a wide plain, each holding a blade, and do nothing. The piece opens on human skin: less than half a fen thick, with hot red blood running behind it through vessels packed denser than the caterpillars on a wall, giving off warmth — and with that warmth people bewitch and incite and pull at one another, desperate to nestle and kiss and embrace and get the drunken great joy of being alive. Turn the same anatomy round, Lu Xun says, and one stroke of a sharp blade through that thin peach-pink skin will send the blood out like arrows to drench the killer with all its warmth, and then give him cold breath and pale lips, and the flying, ultimate great joy is his.

So the two stand there with their blades, about to embrace and about to kill. And the passers-by come running from every side, packed like the caterpillars going up the wall, like ants hauling a dried fish-head — well dressed, empty-handed, craning their necks to enjoy the embrace or the murder, already tasting in advance the sweat or the blood on their tongues. Neither happens. The two stand until their supple bodies dry out, showing no sign of either intention, and the crowd goes flat: boredom bores in through their pores and out again and crawls over the plain and into other people's pores, their throats go dry, their necks tire, they look at one another and drift away. What is left is the empty plain and the two dried figures, watching with the eyes of dead men while the onlookers wither — a great bloodless slaughter, which is the revenge of the title.

When it was written 背景

Dated 20 December 1924, written the same day as its companion Lu Xun says plainly what it is for in his preface to the English translation: he wrote it because he loathed how many onlookers a society contained. The idea is the one that runs through all his work — the crowd craning at the execution in 藥, the drinkers in 孔乙己 — but here it is stripped of story and made physiological, so the vocabulary runs to bodies rather than to people: 皮膚, 血管, 温熱, 利刃, 曠野, and the 大歡喜 that the whole piece hangs on. Read the second 復讎 immediately afterwards; it is the same argument with a named victim.
