As they pressed forward, they suddenly saw a city wall drawing near. Sanzang reined in his horse and called out, "Disciples, look — what place is that?" Wukong said, "So Master doesn't even recognize characters — how did you ever manage to leave the court bearing the Tang Emperor's decree?" Sanzang said, "I have been a monk since childhood, versed in a thousand sutras and ten thousand classics — how can you say I don't recognize characters?" Wukong said, "If you recognize characters, then how is it that you don't recognize the three large characters plainly written on the apricot-yellow banner atop the city wall, and instead ask what place this is?" Sanzang shouted, "This wild monkey talks nonsense." That banner is being blown about wildly by the wind — even if there are characters on it, they can't be seen clearly." Wukong said, "Then how is it that old Monkey alone can see them?" Bajie and Sha Monk said, "Master, don't listen to Elder Brother's mischief." Looking from so far away, even the city itself is not yet clear, so how could he make out what the characters say?" Wukong said, "Aren't they the three characters 'Zhuzi Guo'?" Sanzang said, "Zhuzi Guo must be the throne of a western kingdom; we must have our travel rescript renewed and stamped there." Wukong said, "No need to say more."
Before long, they reached the city gate, dismounted, crossed the bridge, and passed through three successive gates into the city. It was truly a fine imperial city — behold:
As master and disciples walked along the great thoroughfare, they saw that the people were dignified in bearing, neatly dressed and capped, and clear of speech — truly no inferior to the land of Great Tang. The merchants doing business on either side, suddenly seeing Zhu Bajie's ugly countenance, Sha Monk's dark face and tall frame, and Sun Wukong's hairy cheeks and jutting brow, abandoned their trading and all crowded forward to stare. Sanzang could only call out, "Don't cause trouble — keep your heads down and walk on." Bajie obeyed, tucking his lotus-pod snout into his robe;沙僧不敢仰視;Sha Monk did not dare to look up;惟行者東張西望,緊隨唐僧左右。only Wukong looked east and west, following closely at Tang Priest's side. Those among the people who understood propriety took one look and went back about their business. But the idle loafers and mischievous children, laughing and clamoring, all pressed forward throwing tiles and bricks, making sport of Bajie. Tang Priest broke into a cold sweat with worry, and could only urge, "Don't start any trouble." The idiot did not dare raise his head.
Before long, turning a street corner, they suddenly saw a gate wall bearing the three characters "Huitong Guan" (Lodge of Assembled Envoys). Tang Priest said, "Disciples, let us go into this office." Wukong said, "What for?" Tang Priest said, "The Huitong Guan is a place where envoys of all the world gather and pass through — we too may impose upon it." Let us rest inside there for now; wait until I have had audience with the king and had our travel rescript renewed and stamped, and then we shall hurry out of the city and be on our way." Hearing this, Bajie pulled out his snout, startling several dozen of the onlookers following them into falling down. He stepped forward and said, "Master is right — let's hide inside there, to spare ourselves the clamor of this rabble." So they went into the lodge. Only then did the crowd gradually disperse.
Now it happened that in the lodge there were two commissioners, one chief and one deputy, both in the hall checking over the laborers, about to go out to receive an official. Suddenly seeing Tang Priest arrive, everyone was startled, and together they said, "Who is this?" Who is this? Where are you going?" Sanzang pressed his palms together and said, "This poor monk is sent by the court of Great Tang in the Land of the East to fetch scriptures from the Western Heaven." Having now arrived in your esteemed land, I dare not pass through in secret; I have a travel rescript that needs to be checked and renewed for passage, and I would like to borrow your honorable office for a brief rest." Hearing this, the two lodge commissioners dismissed their attendants, straightened their caps and belts, and came down from the hall to greet him. They at once ordered the guest rooms swept and made ready for lodging, and told the kitchen to prepare a vegetarian meal for their use. Sanzang thanked them. The two officials led the laborers out of the hall and departed. The attendants invited the reverend father to rest in the guest rooms, and Sanzang went along. Wukong said resentfully, "These fellows are so shabby — why don't they let old Monkey stay in the main hall?" Sanzang said, "This place does not fall under the rule of our Great Tang, nor does it border our country; moreover, superiors and travelers are constantly passing through, so it isn't fitting for them to entertain us there." Wukong said, "If that's how it is, then I insist all the more that they entertain me there."
Just as they were speaking, the steward brought over the provisions — a plate of white rice, a plate of white flour, two bunches of greens, four pieces of tofu, two portions of wheat gluten, a plate of dried bamboo shoots, and a plate of wood-ear fungus. Sanzang told his disciples to accept them, and thanked the steward. The steward said, "In the west chamber there are clean pots and a stove, and firewood is at hand — please go cook the meal yourselves." Sanzang said, "Let me ask you one thing: is the king holding court in the palace?" The steward said, "Our Ten-Thousand-Years Sovereign has not held court for a long time; today, being an auspicious day, he is discussing with his civil and military officials the issuing of a yellow proclamation." If you wish to have your travel rescript renewed, hurry there now while there's still time, and you can still catch him;"到明日,就不能夠了,不知還有多少時伺候哩。」 by tomorrow it will no longer be possible, and there's no telling how long it will be before he attends court again." Sanzang said, "Wukong, you all arrange the vegetarian meal here; wait for me to hurry over and have the rescript checked, then come back, eat, and be on our way." Bajie quickly took out the cassock and the travel rescript. Sanzang dressed himself properly and went off to court, only cautioning his disciples not to go outside and stir up trouble.
Before long, he had arrived before the Five Phoenix Tower. Words cannot fully describe how towering the halls and pavilions were, how magnificent the towers and terraces. He went straight to outside the main gate, and asked the memorial-presenting official to convey to the court his wish to have his travel rescript checked and renewed. The Gate Attendant duly went before the jade steps and reported, "Outside the court gate there is a monk, an envoy of Great Tang in the Land of the East, on his way to the Thunderclap Monastery in the Western Heaven to worship the Buddha and seek scriptures; he wishes to have his travel rescript renewed, and awaits your summons." Hearing this, the king said joyfully, "I, the Solitary One, have long been ill and have not held court." Only today did I ascend the hall to issue a proclamation seeking a physician, and lo, an eminent monk arrives in the kingdom." He at once issued a decree summoning him below the steps. Sanzang bowed in worship and prostrated himself. The king further summoned him up into the golden hall, granted him a seat, and ordered the Court of Imperial Entertainments to prepare a vegetarian meal. Sanzang expressed his thanks for the royal favor, and presented the travel rescript.
When the king had finished reading it, he was greatly delighted and said, "Master, in your Great Tang, how many reigns of righteous rulers have there been?"幾輩臣賢?"How many generations of worthy ministers?" And as for the Tang king himself, how was it that he fell ill, then returned to life, and sent you across distant mountains and rivers to seek scriptures?" At this question, the elder rose slightly and, pressing his palms together, said, "This poor monk shall relate it in full:"
Hearing this, the king suddenly let out a groan of pain, and asked, "Master, that worthy minister — from what land did he come?" Sanzang said, "He is none other than the prime minister at my king's court, surnamed Wei, given name Zheng." He understands the heavens, knows the earth, discerns yin and yang — he is a great chief minister who pacifies and establishes the nation. Because in a dream he beheaded the Dragon King of the Jing River, that dragon king brought a lawsuit before the courts of the underworld, charging that my king had promised to save him yet had him killed; and so my king fell suddenly ill, growing gradually more critical. Wei Zheng further wrote a letter for my king to carry down to the underworld, to be delivered to Judge Cui Jue of Fengdu City. Shortly after, the Tang king died, and on the third day was restored to life. It was thanks to Wei Zheng that Judge Cui was moved to alter the register, adding twenty years to the king's span of life. Now he wishes to hold a great Land and Water Mass, and so has sent this poor monk on a long journey through many lands to seek out and inquire in every kingdom, to worship the Buddha, and to fetch the Three Baskets of Mahayana scriptures, so as to deliver sinful souls from suffering and raise them up to heaven." The king again sighed with a groan and said, "Truly this is a celestial dynasty, a great nation, with a righteous ruler and worthy ministers." As for me, the Solitary One, I have been ill for a long time now, and not a single minister has been able to save me." Hearing this, the elder stole a glance and saw that the emperor's face was sallow and his flesh wasted, his form emaciated and his spirit worn. Just as the elder was about to inquire further, an official of the Court of Imperial Entertainments came to request that the Tang monk partake of the vegetarian meal. The king issued an edict, saying, "Set it out in the Pixiang Hall, along with Our own meal, to be shared with the master." Sanzang gave thanks for the royal favor, and dined together with the king — but no more of that for now.
Now to tell of Wukong, who back in the Huitong Guan had Sha Monk arrange the tea and rice, and prepare the vegetarian dishes. Sha Monk said, "The tea and rice are easy to cook, but the vegetables are hard to prepare." Wukong asked, "How so?" Sha Monk said, "There's no oil, salt, soy sauce, or vinegar at all." Wukong said, "I have a few coins of travel money here — let Bajie go buy some in the street." The idiot, shirking the task, said, "I dare not go — my face and mouth aren't handsome enough, and I fear it will bring trouble down on us, and Master will blame me." Wukong said, "It's a fair trade — you're neither begging from them nor robbing them, so what trouble could there be?" Bajie said, "Didn't you just see what happened — haven't you learned any sense from it?" Right here at the gate, the moment I stuck out my snout, I frightened a dozen or so people into falling down;"若到鬧市叢中,也不知諕殺多少人哩。」 行者道:「酒店、米鋪、磨坊並綾羅雜貨不消說,著然又好茶房、麵店、大燒餅、大饝饝,飯店又有好湯飯、好椒料、好蔬菜,與那異品的糖糕、蒸酥、點心、子、油食、蜜食,……"if I went into the crowded marketplace, there's no telling how many people I might frighten to death." Wukong said, "You only know about the crowded marketplace, but did you ever see what sort of things are sold in that market?" Bajie said, "Master only told me to keep my head down and not cause trouble — I truly didn't see." Wukong said, "Not to mention the wine shops, the rice stores, the mills, and the silks and sundry goods — there are besides fine teahouses, noodle shops, great sesame cakes, great steamed buns; and the restaurants have fine soups and rice, fine spices, fine vegetables, along with rare sugar cakes, steamed pastries, refreshments, fried twists, fried foods, honeyed sweets... —countless good things. What if I go buy some and treat you?" Hearing this, the idiot's mouth watered, and his throat gulped down saliva with a glugging sound; he leapt up and said, "Brother, this time let me trouble you to treat me, and next time when I've saved up some money, I'll return the favor and treat you." Wukong laughed inwardly and said, "Sha Monk, cook the rice well; wait for us to go buy some seasonings and come back." Sha Monk, also knowing this was just teasing the idiot, could only go along and say, "Go on then, but be sure to buy plenty, and eat your fill before you come back." The idiot snatched up a bowl and cup, and followed Wukong out the door. Two officials there asked, "Elder, where are you going?" Wukong said, "To buy seasonings." The men said, "Go west along this street, turn the corner past the Drum Tower, and there's the Zheng family's sundry goods shop — buy as much as you like, they have oil, salt, soy sauce, vinegar, ginger, pepper, and tea leaves, all complete."
The two of them, hand in hand, went straight off along the street to the west. Wukong passed by several teahouses and several restaurants, but bought nothing he should have bought, and ate nothing he should have eaten. Bajie called out, "Elder Brother, let's just make do and buy something here." But Wukong, who was only teasing him from the start, would not agree to buy, and said, "Worthy brother, you're no good at managing things — let's walk on further, and pick the bigger places to buy and eat." As the two of them talked, they again drew a great crowd of people following along to gawk. Before long they reached the Drum Tower, where they saw countless people below clamoring and jostling, packed shoulder to shoulder, filling the street and blocking the road. Seeing this, Bajie said, "Brother, I'm not going any further." 行者道:「胡談!"The people over there are shouting so fiercely — I'm afraid they might be arresting monks, and besides, we're strangers of suspicious appearance; if they seize us, what then?" Wukong said, "Nonsense!"和尚又不犯法,拿我怎的?"A monk breaks no law — what could they arrest me for?" Let's walk over and go to the Zheng family's shop to buy some seasonings." Bajie said, "Enough, enough, I won't court disaster." If I squeeze into that crowd and flap my ears just twice, I'll frighten them into stumbling and crawling over each other, and if a few get trampled to death, then I'd have to pay with my own life!" Wukong said, "Since that's so, you stand firm here by the wall, and wait for me to go buy things and come back; I'll get you some plain noodles and sesame cakes to eat." The idiot handed the bowl and cup to Wukong, propped his snout against the base of the wall, turned his face away, and would not budge no matter what.
Wukong walked to the side of the tower, and indeed found it packed and jammed. Squeezing his way right into the crowd to listen, he found that it was the royal proclamation posted beneath the tower, which was why so many people were crowding to look. Wukong squeezed his way close, opened wide his fiery golden eyes, and looked carefully — the proclamation read:
Having read it through, he was filled with delight and said, "The ancients said, 'Whoever bestirs himself has a three-tenths share of fortune.' It's a good thing I wasn't sitting idle in the lodge." Right now there's no need to buy any seasonings at all — let's set the matter of fetching scriptures aside and be patient for one more day, while old Monkey plays at being a physician for some fun."
Splendid Great Sage! He bent down, set aside the bowl and cup, took a pinch of dust, scattered it into the air, recited a spell, worked a spell of invisibility, and quietly stepped forward to tear down the proclamation. Facing the southeast, he drew in a breath of divine energy and blew it out, raising a whirlwind that scattered the crowd. He then turned back and went straight to where Bajie was standing, and found the idiot with his snout propped against the wall, looking as if he had fallen asleep. Wukong did not disturb him at all, but folded up the proclamation and gently tucked it into his robe, then turned and headed off first to the Huitong Guan — but no more of that for now.
Now to tell of the crowd beneath the tower — when they saw the whirlwind rise, each of them covered their heads and shut their eyes. Before they knew it, when the wind had passed, the royal proclamation was gone, and everyone was struck with fear. That proclamation had originally been brought out from the morning court by twelve eunuchs and twelve officers, and had not been posted for even three hours before it was blown away by the wind; trembling with fear, they searched all around, when suddenly they spotted the edge of a paper peeking out from Zhu Bajie's robe. The crowd came near and said, "Did you tear down the proclamation?" The idiot suddenly raised his head and gave his snout a jerk. This so frightened several of the officers that they staggered and stumbled, falling to the ground. He then turned to walk away, but was grabbed by several of the bolder ones in front, who said, "You've torn down the royal proclamation calling for a physician — why aren't you going into the court to heal Our Sovereign, and where do you think you're going instead?" The idiot said, flustered, "Your son here tore down the proclamation, and your grandson here will do the healing." The officers said, "What's that tucked in your robe?" Only then did the idiot look down, and sure enough there was a sheet of paper with writing on it. He unfolded it and looked, and gritting his teeth, cursed, "That damned ape is going to be the death of me!" With a snort of fury, he was about to tear it up. But the crowd quickly seized his arms and said, "You're a dead man."此乃當今國王出的榜文,誰敢扯壞?"This is a proclamation issued by the reigning king himself — who would dare tear it up?" Since you've tucked it away in your robe after tearing it down, you must have the skill to heal the kingdom — come with us at once." Bajie shouted, "You people don't understand." This proclamation wasn't torn down by me — it was torn down by my elder martial brother, Sun Wukong." He secretly tucked it into my robe, and then went off and left me here." 眾人道:「說甚麼亂話?"If you want this matter cleared up, I'll go with you to look for him." The crowd said, "What nonsense is this?"現鐘不打打鑄鐘?"Why ignore the bell that's already cast and go casting a new one?"你現揭了榜文,教我們尋誰?"You're the one who just tore down the proclamation — who else do you expect us to look for?" Never mind you — drag him off to see the sovereign." That crowd, without sorting out right from wrong, pushed and dragged at the idiot. The idiot planted his feet firmly, as if he had grown roots, and even a dozen men together could not budge him. Bajie said, "You people don't know your limits — if you keep pulling at me any longer and rouse my idiot temper, don't blame me for what happens."
Before long, the whole neighborhood was in an uproar, and a crowd surrounded him. Among them, two elderly eunuchs said, "Your appearance is so strange, and your voice doesn't sound right — where are you from, to be so uncouth and stubborn?" Bajie said, "We are envoys from the Land of the East, sent to fetch scriptures from the Western Heaven." My master is the sworn brother of the Tang king, Master of the Dharma, and he has just gone into the court to have our travel rescript renewed." My elder brother and I came here to buy seasonings; seeing so many people below the tower, I didn't dare go, so my elder brother told me to wait here." It turns out he saw the proclamation, raised a whirlwind, tore it down, secretly tucked it into my robe, and went off ahead of me." The eunuch said, "Earlier I saw a fair-faced, stout monk heading straight for the court gate — I suppose that was your master?" Bajie said, "Yes, that's right, that's right." The eunuch said, "Where has your elder brother gone?" Bajie said, "There are four of us in our party altogether — Master has gone to renew the travel rescript, and the rest of us three, along with our luggage and horse, are all lodged at the Huitong Guan." My elder brother tricked me and went back to the lodge first." The eunuch said, "Officers, don't drag him about — let's all go together to the lodge, and we'll learn the truth of it." Bajie said, "You two grannies are sensible." The officers said, "This monk truly doesn't know his manners — how can he go calling these eunuchs 'granny'?" Bajie laughed and said, "Shameless, you're the ones who've got yin and yang backwards." These two old dames here — instead of calling them 'granny' or 'auntie,' you go calling them 'eunuch'?" The crowd said, "Stop running your mouth, and hurry up and find your elder brother."
The people on the street clamored and shouted, numbering far more than three or five hundred, and together hauled him to the gate of the lodge. Bajie said, "All of you, stop here." My elder brother is not like me — he won't let you make sport of him." He is a fierce and serious sort of fellow." When you see him, you must make a grand show of courtesy and address him as 'Lord Sun' — then he'll respond to you;"不然啊,他就變了嘴臉,這事卻弄不成也。」 otherwise, he'll change his face, and this matter won't be settled at all." All the eunuchs and officers said, "If your elder brother truly has the skill to heal the king, he ought to get half the kingdom for it — we should all bow down to him."
Those idle bystanders all remained outside the gate, making a great commotion. Bajie led the group of eunuchs and officers straight into the lodge. There they heard Wukong and Sha Monk in the guest room, just then laughing and talking about the matter of tearing down the proclamation. Bajie rushed forward and grabbed hold of him, shouting wildly, "Do you call yourself a human being?" You tricked me into going to buy plain noodles, sesame cakes, and steamed buns for me to eat, and it turns out it was all empty talk." And then you raised a whirlwind, tore down some royal proclamation, and secretly stuffed it into my robe, using me to take the fall." Is this any way to treat a brother?" Wukong laughed and said, "You idiot, you must have taken the wrong road and wandered off somewhere else. I passed by the Drum Tower, bought some seasonings, and hurried back but couldn't find you, so I came on ahead. ...What imperial notice are you tearing down there?" Bajie said, "The officials who watch over the notice are right here." Before he had finished speaking, several eunuchs and captains bowed toward them, saying, "Elder Sun, today our king is in luck—Heaven has sent you down to us. You must surely display your great statecraft skills, and with but a slight application of your thrice-broken-arm medical art, cure our king's illness—and you shall have a share in the realm, half the state divided with you." Wukong, hearing this, composed his expression and manner, took the notice from Bajie, and said to the crowd, "I suppose you are the officials watching the notice?" The eunuch kowtowed and said, "Your servant is a court official of the Directorate of Ceremonial. These others are Embroidered-Uniform Guard captains." Wukong said, "This notice calling for a physician was indeed torn down by me; that is why I sent my junior brother to bring you to me. Since your lord is ill—as the saying goes, 'Medicine is not sold lightly, and illness does not go begging for a doctor.' Go and tell the king to come in person to invite me; I have the skill to cure illness the moment I lay my hand upon it." When the eunuchs heard this, there was not one who was not astonished. The captain said, "One who speaks such great words must surely have great capacity. Let half of us wait here in silent readiness, while the other half go into the court to report."
So four eunuchs and six captains were assigned, and without waiting to be summoned, they went straight into the court and, at the foot of the steps, reported: "Your Majesty, ten thousand joys!" The king was just then finishing his meal with Tripitaka and chatting quietly when he suddenly heard this report, and asked, "Whence comes this joy?" The eunuch reported, "Your servants earlier took out the imperial notice calling for a physician and posted it beneath the Drum Tower. A holy monk named Elder Sun, who has come from afar from the Great Tang of the Eastern Land to fetch scriptures, has torn it down. He is now at the Lodge of Reception and Union, and wishes the king to go in person to invite him; he has the skill to cure illness the moment he lays his hand upon it. That is why we have come specially to report." When the king heard this, his heart was filled with joy, and he at once asked Tripitaka, "How many worthy disciples does the Master have?" Tripitaka pressed his palms together and answered, "This poor monk has three unruly disciples." The king asked, "Which of your worthy disciples is skilled in medicine?" Tripitaka said, "To tell Your Majesty the truth, those unruly disciples of mine are all rustic, mediocre fellows, capable only of carrying bundles and leading the horse, fording streams and seeking out paths, guiding this poor monk over mountains and across ridges—or, when we come to steep and dangerous places, subduing demons, capturing monsters, seizing tigers, and taming dragons, that is all. Not one of them knows anything of the nature of medicines." The king said, "Why must the Master be so overly modest? Today when I ascended the throne hall, I had the good fortune to meet the Master arriving at court—this is truly a bond ordained by Heaven. If your worthy disciple does not know medicine, why would he be willing to tear down my notice and have me come to greet him in person? He must certainly have the ability to heal the realm." He then called out, "Civil and military ministers, all of you—my body is weak and my strength faint, and I dare not ride in my carriage. You may go in my stead, all of you, out beyond the court, and respectfully invite Elder Sun to come and examine my illness. When you see him, you must on no account treat him lightly. Address him as 'the Divine Monk, Elder Sun,' and greet him all with the ceremony due between ruler and minister."
The assembled ministers received the decree and, together with the eunuchs and captains who had watched the notice, went straight to the Lodge of Reception and Union, where they arranged themselves in ranks and made their bows. This so frightened Bajie that he hid in the side chamber, while Sha Monk slipped off against the wall. The Great Sage, for his part, sat squarely in the middle, upright and unmoving. Bajie grumbled secretly in resentment, "This wretched macaque will be the death of us all with his airs. With so many officials bowing before him, how can he not return their courtesy, nor even rise to his feet?" Before long, the bowing was finished, and the officials, dividing into ranks, reported: "We beg to inform the Divine Monk, Elder Sun: we are all ministers of the King of Zhuzi, and now, obeying the king's decree, we respectfully come with pure ceremony to invite the Divine Monk to enter the court and examine his illness." Only then did Wukong rise to his feet and say to the assembly, "Why has your king not come himself?" The ministers said, "Our king's body is weak and his strength faint, and he dares not ride in his carriage; he has specially ordered us, his servants, to perform the ceremony in his stead and respectfully invite the Divine Monk." Wukong said, "Since that is how things stand, gentlemen, please lead the way, and I shall follow along." The ministers, each according to rank, formed a procession and set off walking. Wukong straightened his robe and rose. Bajie said, "Brother, whatever happens, don't drag us into this." Wukong said, "I won't drag you in—I only need you two to receive medicine on my behalf." Sha Monk asked, "Receive what medicine?" Wukong said, "Whenever anyone brings medicine to me, accept it according to the amount listed, and wait until I return to make use of it." The two of them assented and said no more of it for now.
Wukong then went along with the many officials, and in a short while they arrived. The ministers went ahead first to report to the king, who had the pearl curtain rolled up high; flashing his dragon eyes and phoenix gaze, he opened his golden mouth to speak royally, and asked, "Which one of you is the Divine Monk, Elder Sun?" Wukong stepped forward and said in a stern voice, "Old Sun is he." When the king heard the fierce harshness of his voice, and saw besides how sharp and strange his features were, he was so terrified that he trembled and fell back upon his dragon bed. This threw the palace women and eunuchs into a panic, and they hastily supported him and helped him back into the inner palace. He cried, "You have frightened me half to death!" All the officials rebuked Wukong angrily, saying, "How can this monk be so coarse and uncouth?怎敢就擅揭榜?」How dare he presume to tear down the notice on his own authority?"
Hearing this, Wukong laughed and said, "You gentlemen have blamed me wrongly. If people are treated with such neglect as this, your king's illness would not be cured even in a thousand years." The ministers said, "How many years of life can a person have? Would even a thousand years not cure him?" Wukong said, "As things stand now he is a sick ruler; when he dies he will be a sick ghost; and when he is reborn again he will still be a sick man—so is that not a case of not being cured even in a thousand years?" The ministers said angrily, "This monk knows nothing of propriety at all—how dare he spout such utter nonsense?" Wukong laughed and said, "It is not nonsense. Listen, all of you, to what I have to say:
Among the crowd of civil and military officials standing in their two ranks was an official of the Imperial Academy of Medicine, who, upon hearing these words, praised them before the assembly, saying, "What this monk says also makes sense. Even when an immortal examines an illness, he must still look, listen and smell, ask questions, and take the pulse—carefully combining the four techniques of sagely and skillful diagnosis."
The assembled officials, following these words, had a personal attendant convey a report: "The Elder wishes to employ the principles of looking, listening and smelling, questioning, and pulse-taking; only then can he identify the illness and apply medicine." The king, lying on his dragon bed, called out again and again, "Tell him to go away—I cannot bear to look upon a stranger's face." The attendant came out of the palace and said, "Monk, it is our king's decree that you go away—he cannot bear to look upon a stranger's face." Wukong said, "If he cannot bear to look upon a stranger's face, then I know how to take the pulse by a suspended thread." The officials, secretly delighted, said, "Pulse-taking by suspended thread—we have heard of it by ear, but never witnessed it with our own eyes. Let us report this again." The attendant went back into the palace and reported: "My lord, Elder Sun says that without seeing your face, he can take your pulse by a suspended thread." The king thought to himself, "I have been ill for three years and have never tried this—summon him in." The attendant hastened out at once to announce, "My lord has consented to his taking the pulse by suspended thread; summon Elder Sun quickly into the palace to make his examination."
Wukong then ascended the precious hall. Tripitaka came forward to meet him and scolded him, saying, "You wretched ape, you have ruined me!" Wukong laughed and said, "Good master, I have brought you honor and glory instead, and yet you say I have ruined you?" Tripitaka shouted, "In all the years you have followed me, when have you ever cured anyone of anything? You do not even know the properties of medicines, nor have you ever read a medical text—how dare you so boldly court such great disaster?" Wukong laughed and said, "Master, it turns out you don't know. I have a few herbal prescriptions of my own that can cure serious illnesses; rest assured I shall cure him and have done with it. Even if I were to kill him with my treatment, I would only be charged with the crime of an incompetent physician causing death, and that would not be a capital offense—so what are you afraid of! It doesn't matter, it doesn't matter—just sit down and watch how well I understand the pulse." The elder said further, "When have you ever even seen the Su Wen, the Nan Jing, the Ben Cao, or the Mai Jue, to know what sort of chapters and verses they contain, or how they are to be interpreted? To go on talking such reckless nonsense—what do you know of taking the pulse by suspended thread?" Wukong laughed and said, "I have golden threads upon my own body; you simply have never seen them." He at once reached down and plucked three hairs from his tail, rolled them together in his hand, and shouted, "Change!" They at once transformed into three silk threads, each two zhang four chi in length, corresponding to the twenty-four solar terms, and he held them cradled in his hand, saying to Tripitaka, "Are these not my golden threads?" The attendant eunuch standing by said, "Elder, pray say no more, and come now into the palace to make your examination." Wukong took leave of Tripitaka and followed the attendant into the palace to examine the illness. Truly it was thus:
In the end, what illness this visit would reveal, and what medicines would be used, remained unknown. If you wish to know the outcome, listen to the explanation given in the next chapter.

What it’s about
At the Vermilion-Purple Kingdom, Wukong reads a public notice seeking a physician for the gravely ill king and volunteers under a grand medical title. Court doctors doubt the hairy stranger, but he diagnoses the ruler by running threads to the royal pulse from behind a screen. He identifies a disorder produced by prolonged fear, grief and obstructed digestion, then has Bajie and Sha Wujing help gather unlikely ingredients for a purgative pill.
Wukong adds soot scraped from a cooking pot and, secretly, a little horse urine to the medicine, insisting that effectiveness matters more than courtly disgust. Rainwater delivers the dose, the king expels the blockage and immediately improves. Once restored enough to speak, he explains that three years earlier the demon Sai Tai Sui abducted his queen, the Golden-Sage Palace Lady, and that terror at the annual demand for attendants has sustained his illness. The healer now turns toward the political cause behind the symptoms.
When it was written 背景
The chapter draws comedy from Wukong practicing learned medicine, yet his diagnosis joins bodily and emotional causes more intelligently than the skeptical courtiers expect. The saying behind “three broken arms” associates repeated experience with becoming a good physician; Wukong's authority is improvised, but it rests on long practice reading danger and bodies. Pulse threads, named ingredients and purgation reflect traditional medical conventions while the vulgar additions puncture elite decorum. Learners can follow diagnosis, compounding and case history as three distinct movements. Most importantly, cure does not end the episode: the king's body registers an unresolved abduction, so restoring speech reveals the monster whom medicine alone cannot remove.
