Monkey Defeats the Golden-Bells Demon and Rescues the Queen

070Chapter 70

:「The story tells how Sun Xingzhe roused his divine might, gripped his iron cudgel, trod the auspicious light, and rose into the air, calling out to face the foe: "Where do you come from, evil fiend??」:「Where do you mean to rampage to?" The monster cried out fiercely in a loud voice: "My company is no other than the vanguard under the command of the Great King Saitaisui of Xiezhi Cave on Qilin Mountain. Now, obeying the Great King's order, I have come here to take two palace maids to wait upon Her Highness Jinsheng.?」:「西Who are you, that you dare question me?" Xingzhe said: "I am the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, Sun Wukong. Because I am escorting the Tang Monk from the Land of the East to worship Buddha in the Western Heaven, I passed through this kingdom, and learning that this band of evil fiends was oppressing its ruler, I have specially displayed my heroic talent to govern the realm and drive out evil.。」I had nowhere to look for you, and yet here you come to throw away your life." Hearing this, the monster, not knowing good from bad, thrust out his long spear to stab at Xingzhe;Xingzhe raised his iron cudgel and met him head-on.In midair there followed a fine battle:

The monster was struck by Xingzhe's iron cudgel, which broke his spear shaft in two; in panic for his life, he turned on the wind and fled in defeat straight toward the west.

:「。」Xingzhe did not pursue him for the moment, but lowered his cloud and came to the entrance of the underground chamber of the Fiend-Avoiding Tower, calling out: "Master, please come out together with His Majesty — the monster has already been driven off." Only then did Tang Seng, supporting the king, come out of the chamber together with him.滿They saw the whole sky clear and bright, with not a trace of demonic vapor left. The emperor at once went to the banquet table, and with his own hands took up the pot to pour wine, filling a golden cup to the brim, and offered it to Xingzhe, saying: "Divine monk, allow me this small token of thanks, this small token of thanks." Xingzhe took the cup in hand, but before he could reply, he heard an official outside the court gate report: "Fire has broken out at the west gate!" Hearing this, Xingzhe flung the golden cup, wine and all, up into the air — with a ringing clang, the golden cup fell to the ground.:「The king, flustered, bowed and said: "Divine monk, forgive me, forgive me — it is I who was at fault.殿便By rights I should have invited you up to the hall to offer thanks properly; it was only because this wine happened to be conveniently at hand that I offered it here instead.?」:「。」:「西But now, divine monk, you have flung away the cup — is that not a sign you take offense?" Xingzhe laughed and said: "That is not it at all, that is not it at all." A moment later, another official came to report: "What a fine rain! Just as the fire broke out at the west gate, a great downpour came and put the fire out. :「The whole street is running with water, and it all smells of wine." Xingzhe laughed again and said: "Your Majesty, you saw me fling away the cup and suspected I took offense — but that was not it.西The monster fled defeated toward the west, and though I did not pursue him, he set a fire in his wake.西?」That cup of wine was in fact what I used to put out the monster's fire and save the people inside and outside the west city — how could I have meant anything else?"

The king was more delighted and respectful than ever.殿He at once invited Sanzang and his three disciples up together onto the throne hall, and there arose in him even a thought of yielding his throne to them.:「Xingzhe laughed and said: "Your Majesty, that monster just now claimed to be the vanguard under Saitaisui, come here to fetch palace maids. Now that he has fled back defeated, he is sure to report it to that fiend, and that fiend is certain to come and contend with me.I fear that if he suddenly musters his troops and comes, he will inevitably alarm and harm the common people again, and frighten Your Majesty, so I wish to go out and meet him halfway, and there in midair seize him and bring back the Holy Empress. But I do not yet know which direction he has gone.?」:「How far is it from here to his mountain cave?" The king said: "I once sent night-scouting cavalry there to gather intelligence, and the round trip took over fifty days.。」:「。」:「。」:「It lies to the south, some three thousand-odd li away." Hearing this, Xingzhe called out: "Eight Rules, Sha Monk, guard and stay here — old Monkey will go and come back." The king caught hold of him, saying: "Divine monk, please take your time for one day; let me prepare some dry provisions and roasted grain for you, give you some silver for travel expenses, and choose a swift horse — only then may you go." Xingzhe laughed and said: "Your Majesty speaks as one who crosses mountains and ridges on foot.。」:「?」Old Monkey will not hide it from you: a journey of three thousand li such as this — pour a cup of wine and before it cools I'll have made the round trip." The king said: "Divine monk, do not take offense at what I say, but with your honored appearance, you look just like a monkey — how could you possibly have such power to travel so?" Xingzhe said:

:「。」:「。」Hearing this, the king was both alarmed and delighted, and smiling, held up a cup of imperial wine and handed it to Xingzhe, saying: "Divine monk, you will labor far on my behalf — take this cup as a token of my intent." But the Great Sage's whole heart was set on subduing the demon, and he had no mind at all to drink wine, and only said: "Set it down for now, wait until I return and I will drink it then." Splendid Xingzhe — with that word, he let out a whistle and vanished without a trace. The ruler and ministers of that whole kingdom were left astonished — but no more of that for now.

The story now tells how Xingzhe leapt up with his body, and at once saw a tall mountain blocking the mist and clouds ahead. He at once lowered his cloud and stood on the very summit, looking carefully about — what a mountain it was:

The Great Sage looked and looked without tiring, and was just about to search for the cave entrance, when he saw thick smoke and fire come blazing out from a mountain hollow; in an instant, red flames shot up to fill the sky, and from amid the red flames there billowed a stream of foul smoke, more venomous even than the fire. What smoke!Just look:

The Great Sage Sun was just then growing afraid, when he saw a stream of sand burst out from within the mountain as well. What sand — truly it blotted out the sky and hid the sun!Just look:

Xingzhe, absorbed only in watching this spectacle, did not notice the sandy dust flying into his nose, and it tickled so that he sneezed twice. He at once turned his head, reached out, and groped under the cliff for two smooth pebbles, which he stuffed into his nostrils. He shook himself and transformed into a fire-gathering kestrel, and flew straight into the midst of the smoke and fire; after darting through it a few times, the sandy dust vanished, and the smoke and fire died down as well.He hastily resumed his true form and came down, and looking about again, he heard the clanging sound of a bronze gong.:「He said to himself: "I have taken the wrong road — this is not where the monster lives. That gong sounds like a courier's gong; it must be a main road through the kingdom, with a courier going to deliver a document.。」Let old Monkey go and ask him about it."

Just as he was walking along, he suddenly saw what looked like a young demon, shouldering a yellow banner, carrying a document on his back, beating a gong, and hurrying along swift as flying.:「Xingzhe laughed and said: "So it is this fellow beating the gong.I wonder what letter he is delivering?。」Let me listen in on him." Splendid Great Sage — he shook himself and turned into a horsefly, and lightly flew down onto the demon's document pouch.:「He heard the monster beating his gong, muttering and grumbling to himself as he recited: "My Great King is really too cruel-hearted.Three years ago, at Zhuzi Guo, he forcibly seized the Golden Sage Empress, but all this time he has had no luck — he has never managed to touch her body, and it is only the palace maids sent to fill in for her who have suffered for it.Two were sent, and both were killed; four were sent, and they too were killed. The year before last he demanded some, last year he demanded more, this year he demands yet more, and now he wants still more. But this time he has run into his match — the vanguard who went to demand the palace maids was defeated by some Sun Xingzhe or other, and no maids were sent.My Great King, enraged over this, means to contend with that kingdom, and has sent me to deliver some kind of declaration of war.On this trip, if that king does not fight, well and good, but if he fights, it will surely go badly for him.使My Great King will send smoke and fire and flying sand, and that king, his ministers, and all his common people — not one of them could hope to survive. Then we will seize his city and land, my Great King will proclaim himself emperor, and we will all be styled his ministers.。」Though there will indeed be titles and ranks great and small for us, still — this is something Heaven's principle cannot tolerate."

:「Hearing this, Xingzhe secretly rejoiced, thinking: "Even among monsters there are some with a good heart in them.』,Take these last two lines of his — saying 'Heaven's principle cannot tolerate it' — is that not the mark of a decent sort? But he said the Golden Sage Empress has had no luck all along and has never been touched — I do not understand the meaning of that.。」Let me ask him about it." With a buzz, he flew off the monster on his wings, circled ahead along the road, and after some ten-odd li, shook himself and transformed again, this time into a Taoist page-boy:

:「He came round a mountain slope and, meeting the little demon face to face, made a greeting with clasped hands, saying: "Officer, where are you off to??」:「。」:「?」:「What document are you delivering?" The monster, as though he already knew him, stopped his gong-stick and returned the greeting with a smile, saying: "My Great King has sent me to deliver a declaration of war to Zhuzi Guo." Xingzhe took up the thread and asked: "That matter of the one from Zhuzi Guo — has she and the Great King come together yet?" The little demon said: "Ever since she was carried off the year before last, at the time there was an immortal who sent a set of five-colored celestial robes as a new wardrobe gift for the Golden Sage Palace lady.穿Once she put on that robe, her whole body, top to bottom, grew covered with needle-like spines, and my Great King dares not so much as touch her, not even a light touch. If he so much as brushes against her, the palm of his hand aches at once, and no one knows the reason why. From that time to this, he still has never touched her. This morning he sent the vanguard to demand palace maids to wait on her, and the vanguard was defeated by some Sun Xingzhe or other.。」:「?」:「My Great King flew into a rage, and that is why he sent me to deliver this declaration of war, to give battle with them tomorrow." Xingzhe said: "Why then is the Great King so vexed?" The little demon said: "He is indeed vexed over it just now.。」Go and sing him some Taoist ditty or other to ease his gloom."

Splendid Xingzhe — he cupped his hands and took his leave, walking off.The monster went on beating his gong and walking ahead as before.漿Xingzhe then turned murderous, drew out his cudgel, turned back around, and struck the little demon a blow on the back of the head — pitiful thing, it was struck so that his skull burst and blood and brains spattered out, the skin split, the neck snapped, and his life was ended then and there.:「Putting away his cudgel, he then regretted it, saying: "I was a bit too hasty — I never asked him what his name was.。」Oh well." He then took the declaration of war off the body and hid it inside his sleeve. He hid the yellow banner and bronze gong in the grass beside the road.As he was dragging the body by the foot, meaning to fling it down into the ravine, he heard a clank, and a gold-inlaid identity tag showed at the waist.:「On the tag were written words, reading: "One trusted junior officer, Youlai Youqu (Comes-and-Goes).Short of stature, with a pockmarked face and no beard.。」:「!」To be worn at all times; without the tag, he is an impostor." Xingzhe laughed and said: "So this fellow's name is Youlai Youqu — 'Comes-and-Goes' — well, this one blow of my cudgel has made it so he's Gone-and-Not-Coming!" He undid the identity tag and fastened it at his own waist. He was about to fling the corpse down, but then thought again of how venomous that smoke and fire had been.He did not dare go seeking out the cave for now, so he raised his cudgel, jabbed it into the little demon's chest, hoisted the body up into the air on it, and headed straight back to the kingdom, meaning to claim credit for the first feat.Watch him now, musing to himself all the way, he let out a whistle and arrived at the kingdom's border.

殿:「Just then Eight Rules was standing guard before the Golden Chariot Hall together with the king and the master, when he happened to turn his head and saw Xingzhe in midair carrying a demon along on his cudgel; he grumbled in complaint: "Ai!What a worthless bit of business.?」If only old Hog had known, I would have gone and caught him — wouldn't that have counted as my achievement?" Before he had finished speaking, Xingzhe lowered his cloud and flung the monster down at the foot of the steps.:「。」:「?」:「。」:「。」 :「。」殿Eight Rules ran up and gave it a jab with his rake, saying: "This is old Hog's achievement." Xingzhe said: "What achievement of yours is this?" Eight Rules said: "Don't try to cheat me out of it — I have proof: didn't you see, one jab of my rake made nine holes in him?" Xingzhe said: "Look and see whether he has a head or not." Eight Rules laughed and said: "So he really has no head — no wonder when I jabbed him he didn't even budge!" Xingzhe said: "Where is the master?" Eight Rules said: "He is in the hall talking with the king." Xingzhe said: "Go and ask him to come out, please." Eight Rules hurried up to the hall and nodded his head.便殿Sanzang at once rose and came down from the hall to meet Xingzhe.:「。」Xingzhe tucked a declaration of war into Sanzang's sleeve, saying: "Master, keep this — but do not let the king see it."

殿:「Before he had finished speaking, the king too came down from the hall and, meeting Xingzhe, said: "Divine elder monk, you have returned!?」:「How did the matter of catching the monster go?" Xingzhe pointed with his hand, saying: "Isn't that a monster there at the foot of the steps?。」:「便Old Monkey has beaten him to death." Seeing it, the king said: "That is indeed a monster's corpse, but it is not Saitaisui.Saitaisui — I have seen him myself twice with my own eyes — he stands eighteen feet tall, with shoulders as broad as five ordinary spans;his face gleams like gold, and his voice booms like thunder.?」:「How could he be this mean and stunted?" Xingzhe laughed and said: "Since Your Majesty recognizes him, indeed it is not he.。」:「This is a little demon sent to report matters, who ran into old Monkey, and I killed him first and carried him back to claim credit." The king was overjoyed, saying: "Good, good, good — this should count as the first achievement.I have often sent people here to spy and gather news, yet never once got anything solid.。」:「。」The moment the divine monk set out, he caught one and brought him back — truly divine power!" He called out: "Bring warmed wine, to congratulate the elder monk on his achievement."

:「Xingzhe said: "Drinking wine is still a minor matter.Let me ask Your Majesty: when the Golden Sage Palace lady parted from you, did she leave behind any keepsake at all?。」Give it to me." When the king heard the words "keepsake," it was as though a knife had carved into his heart, and he could not help bursting into tears, saying:

:「Xingzhe said: "With Your Majesty right here before me, why grieve so?If the lady left no keepsake, then does she have, inside the palace, some object she was especially fond of?。」:「?」:「Give me one such thing, and that will do." The king said: "What do you want it for?" Xingzhe said: "That demon king truly has real magic power — I saw him send out smoke, fire, and sand, and indeed they are hard to deal with.Even if I subdue him, I fear the lady, seeing my face is unfamiliar to her, will not be willing to follow me back to the kingdom.I must have some object she was fond of in her daily life, so that she will trust me, and I can then bring her back safely.。」:「That is why I need to take something along." The king said: "In the dressing chamber of the Zhaoyang Palace there is a pair of gold treasure bracelets, which the Golden Sage Palace lady originally wore on her wrist. It was only because on that Duanwu Festival day she needed to tie on the five-colored silk threads that she slipped them off, and she never put them back on again. This is an object she was fond of, and it is now kept in the cosmetics case.Seeing her suffer this separation, I could not bear to look at it again;。」:「one glance at it would be like seeing her lovely face again, and my illness would grow that much worse." Xingzhe said: "Let us set that talk aside for now, and just fetch the gold bracelets. If Your Majesty can bear to part with them, give me both to take;。」if not, just give me one to take." The king thereupon ordered the Jade Sage Palace lady to fetch them out.Once fetched out, they were handed to the king.」,Seeing them, the king cried out several times, "My dear caring, loving empress," and then handed them to Xingzhe.Xingzhe took them and slipped them onto his arm.

Splendid Great Sage — without even drinking the wine offered for his achievement, he mounted his somersault cloud, let out a whistle, and was once more atop Qilin Mountain. With no heart to enjoy the scenery, he went straight to search for the cave dwelling. As he was walking along, he suddenly heard the clamor of many voices, and at once stood still, fixing his eyes to look.It turned out that at the entrance of Xiezhi Cave, the greater and lesser chieftains guarding the gate numbered about five hundred, gathered there:

Seeing this, Xingzhe dared not go forward, and turned back at once, retracing the way he had come.Do you know how he managed to slip away?It was not that he feared him.Instead he went to the place where he had killed the little demon, found the yellow banner and the bronze gong, faced into the wind, formed a magic sign with his fingers, and with a thought summoned the transformation — shaking his body, he changed into the very likeness of Youlai-Youqu, and beating the gong with a clanging noise, strode forward in great steps, heading straight for Xiezhi Cave.:「?」:「。」:「。」Just as he was about to look over the scenery of the cave, he heard a macaque call out, "Youlai-Youqu, are you back?" Wukong had no choice but to answer, "I'm back." The macaque said, "Hurry along — His Majesty the Great King is waiting at Bopi Pavilion for your report."

Hearing this, Wukong quickened his stride, beating the gong, and went straight in through the front gate to look around; it turned out to be sheer cliffs and precipitous walls, stone chambers and empty halls, with rare flowers and jade-like grasses on either side, and ancient cypresses and tall pines before and behind. Before he knew it he had come to the second gate, and suddenly looking up he saw a pavilion bright with eight windows; in the middle of the pavilion stood a gold-inlaid folding chair, and seated upright upon it was a demon king, truly fearsome to behold.Behold him:

When Wukong saw him, he openly put on airs of disdain toward the demon, observing not the slightest courtesy: he turned his face away, looking outward, and simply went on beating the gong.:「?」The demon king asked, "You're back?" Wukong did not answer.:「?」He asked again, "Youlai-Youqu, you're back?" Still he did not respond.:「?」:「』、『』?The demon king stepped forward, seized hold of him, and said, "Why do you go on beating the gong even after reaching home, and why don't you answer when asked — what's the meaning of this?" Wukong flung the gong down onto the ground and said, "What do you mean, 'what's the meaning of this,' 'what's the meaning of this'?I said I didn't want to go, but you made me go.:『。』When I got there, I saw countless troops and horses drawn up in battle formation; the moment they saw me they all shouted, 'Seize the demon, seize the demon!' They shoved and pulled me, dragged and hauled me, and hauled me into the city. When I was brought before the king, the king ordered, 'Behead him.' Fortunately the two ranks of advisers said, 'When two sides are at war, envoys are not to be beheaded,' and so I was spared. They accepted the letter of challenge, then had me escorted out of the city, gave me thirty strokes on the legs before the assembled troops, and let me come back to report.。」:「。」:「They will be coming here before long to give battle against you." The demon king said, "If that's how it is, then you took a beating — no wonder you wouldn't answer when I questioned you." Wukong said, "Isn't that just it?。」:「?」:「It was only because I was guarding the pain that I didn't answer." The demon king said, "How many troops and horses were there?" Wukong said, "I was scared witless, and beaten till I was terrified besides — how could I have counted their troop numbers?I only saw their weapons arrayed there thick and gleaming:

:「Hearing this, the king laughed and said, "No matter, no matter.Weapons like these will all be reduced to nothing in a single blaze of fire.Go now and report this to Lady Jinsheng, and tell her not to fret. This morning, when she heard me swear fiercely that I meant to go into battle, her eyes brimmed with tears that would not dry.。」Go now and tell her that their troops and horses are valiant, and are sure to defeat me, just to ease her mind for the moment."

:「。」穿Hearing this, Wukong was overjoyed and thought, "This suits old Monkey's purpose exactly." Just watch him — he knew the way perfectly, and turned past the side gate, passing through the halls.Everything within was lofty halls and grand chambers, quite unlike the look of the outer parts. He went straight to the palace at the rear, and from afar saw a magnificent painted gate — this was where Lady Jinsheng resided.鹿Going straight inside to look, he saw two rows of fox-spirits and deer-spirits, each one got up in the form of a beautiful woman, standing in attendance to either side.Right in the middle sat the lady herself, her hand cupping her fragrant cheek, tears dripping from both eyes. She was indeed a sight to behold:

:「。」:「Wukong stepped forward and made a bow of greeting, saying, "Receive my salute." The lady said, "This vulgar, boorish demon is utterly ill-mannered.To think that when I was in the kingdom of Zhuzi, sharing glory and splendor together with the king, the grand preceptor and the chief minister, on seeing me, would prostrate themselves in the dust and not dare look up.』?How dare this wild demon call out 'receive my salute' to me??」:「Where did such a boorish, vulgar creature come from?" The attendant maids stepped forward and said, "My lady, calm your anger. He is a trusted junior officer of His Majesty the Great King, named Youlai-Youqu.。」 :「?」:「It was he who was sent this morning to deliver the letter of challenge." On hearing this, the lady held back her anger and asked, "When you delivered the letter of challenge, did you actually reach the borders of Zhuzi?" Wukong said, "I carried the letter straight into the city, to the Golden Throne Hall, met the sovereign face to face, and have already brought back his reply." The lady said, "You saw the sovereign — what did he say?" Wukong said, "What the sovereign said of giving battle, and the matter of arraying troops in formation, I have only just told the Great King. It's only that the sovereign has thoughts of longing for you, my lady, and there is a word close to his heart that I have come especially to report.。」But with so many people about, this is no place to speak of it."

On hearing this, the lady shouted for the two rows of foxes and deer to withdraw.:「Wukong shut the palace doors, wiped his face, and revealed his true form, saying to the lady, "Don't be afraid of me.西I am a monk sent by the great Tang of the Land of the East to Leiyin Monastery in the kingdom of Tianzhu in the great Western Heaven, to see the Buddha and seek the scriptures. My master is Tang Sanzang, sworn brother of the Tang emperor.I am his eldest disciple, Sun Wukong.Because I passed through your kingdom to have our travel pass renewed, I saw that your sovereign and his ministers had posted a notice seeking a physician; it was I who, putting forth my full medical skill, cured him of the illness born of his longing for you, and he set out a banquet to thank me.While we were drinking, it came out that you had been carried off by a demon.Since I know how to subdue dragons and tame tigers, he specially asked me to come capture the demon and rescue you back to your country. It was I who defeated the vanguard in battle, and it was also I who killed the little demon.。」Seeing how fierce and wild he was at the gate, I transformed myself into the likeness of Youlai-Youqu and risked myself to come here, to bring you word." When the lady heard this, she fell silent, lost in thought.:「?」:「。」Wukong took out the jeweled bracelet and offered it up with both hands, saying, "If you don't believe me, see where this came from." The moment the lady saw it, tears fell, and she rose from her seat to bow in thanks, saying, "Elder, if you truly manage to save me and bring me back to court, I shall not forget this great kindness to the end of my days."

:「?」:「Wukong said, "Let me ask you — that thing of his which releases fire, releases smoke, and releases sand, what treasure is it?" The lady said, "It's no great treasure at all — it is three golden bells. When he shakes the first one, three hundred zhang of firelight burst out to burn people;when he shakes the second one, three hundred zhang of smoke rise to choke people;when he shakes the third one, three hundred zhang of yellow sand swirl up to blind people.。」:「The smoke and fire are not so bad, but the yellow sand is the deadliest — if it gets into a person's nostrils, it costs them their life." Wukong said, "Fearsome, fearsome.I have felt it myself — it made me sneeze twice.?」:「But I wonder, where does he keep his bells?" The lady said, "How would he ever be willing to set them down?。」:「使He simply keeps them tied at his waist; walking, standing, sitting, or lying down, they never leave his body." Wukong said, "If you still care for the kingdom of Zhuzi, and wish to be reunited with the king, you must set aside your worries and grief for now, put on a charming, joyful countenance, speak with him of husband-and-wife affection, and get him to hand the bells over for you to keep.便。」Then, when I find my chance, I will steal them and subdue this demon; at that time I can take you back, so you and the king may be reunited like mated phoenixes and share peace together." The lady agreed to this.

Wukong then transformed himself back into the trusted junior officer, opened the palace doors, and called the attendant maids back in.:「。」:「。」:「?」:「:『。』。」:「The lady said, "Youlai-Youqu, hurry to the front pavilion and invite your Great King here to speak with me." Splendid Wukong! He answered at once, went straight to Bopi Pavilion, and said to the demon, "Great King, Her Holy Highness invites you." The demon king said joyfully, "The lady is usually always scolding me — why does she invite me today?" Wukong said, "The lady asked about the king of Zhuzi, and I told her, 'He no longer wants you; his kingdom has set up another empress in your place.' Hearing this, the lady gave up all hope of him, and that is why she has just now sent me to invite you." The demon king was delighted and said, "You really are useful.。」When I have wiped out his kingdom, I will make you a grand steward attending the court."

Wukong readily gave thanks for the favor, and hurried along with the demon king to the entrance of the rear palace. The lady welcomed him with a joyful face and reached out her hand to support him.退:「The demon king bowed and bowed again as he drew back, saying, "I dare not, I dare not.。」:「。」:「。」:「I am most grateful for my lady's affection, but I fear my hand will hurt, and so I dare not draw close." The lady said, "Great King, please sit — I have something to say to you." The demon king said, "Speak freely, whatever it is." The lady said, "I have received the Great King's gracious love, and it is now three years, yet I have never once shared pillow and quilt with you.Surely it was a bond from a former life that made us husband and wife in this one.Yet who would have thought the Great King harbors thoughts of keeping me at a distance, and does not treat me as a wife.I recall that when I was empress in the kingdom of Zhuzi, whenever outer lands presented treasures as tribute, once the king had looked them over, he would always give them to the empress to keep.穿Here with you there is no treasure of any kind; all around, what is worn is sable fur, what is eaten is raw meat — when have I ever seen fine silk, brocade, gold, or pearls? There is nothing but hides spread out and blankets laid over.Or perhaps you do have some treasures, but because you keep me at a distance, you neither let me see them nor let me keep them for you.Take, for instance, the three bells I have heard you have — I imagine they must be some kind of treasure — why do you carry them with you whether walking or sitting? Why not just give them to me to keep, and take them out again whenever you need them — surely there would be no harm in that. This too would be fitting for a husband and wife, a token of trusting your innermost heart to me.?」:「To refuse me even this trust — what is that, if not keeping me at a distance?" The demon king laughed heartily and apologized, saying, "My lady's reproach is quite right, quite right.。」便The treasure is right here; today I shall indeed hand it over for you to keep." And with that he lifted his robe to take out the treasure.Wukong, standing to one side, watched without blinking as the demon lifted two or three layers of clothing, revealing the three bells worn next to his skin. :「He untied them, stuffed the openings with a bit of cotton wadding, wrapped them in a piece of leopard skin as a bundle, and handed them to the lady, saying, "Though this thing is of little worth, you must guard it with care — on no account shake it." The lady took it in her hands and said, "I understand.。」:「。」鹿I shall set it on this dressing table, where no one will disturb it." Then she called out, "Attendants, bring wine — the Great King and I shall share a happy hour together and drink a few cups." Hearing this, the attendant maids at once laid out fruit and vegetables, set out the meat of river-deer, deer, and hare, and poured coconut wine to offer them. The lady put on an air of bewitching charm, coaxing the demon spirit along.

Sun Wukong, waiting nearby for his chance, edged and crept along, drew close to the dressing table, gently took up the three golden bells, moved slowly step by step, slipped out through the palace gate, and made straight away from the cave dwelling. When he reached a spot before Bopi Pavilion where no one was about, he unwrapped the leopard-skin bundle to look: the middle bell was as large as a teacup, and the two at either end were as large as fists.綿Not knowing the danger, he pulled out the cotton wadding.滿There came a clear ringing clang, and smoke, fire, and yellow sand came gushing and bursting forth; he tried in haste to stop it but could not, and the whole pavilion burst into roaring flame.:「。」Startled, the demon spirits guarding the gate all crowded in a rush into the rear palace, alarming the demon king, who hurriedly ordered, "Go put out the fire, put out the fire!" When he came out to look, it turned out to be Youlai-Youqu holding the golden bells.:「?」:「。」The demon king strode forward and shouted, "You vile slave! How dare you steal my treasured golden bells and fool around with them here?" He shouted, "Seize him, seize him!" The Tiger General, Bear Commander, Leopard Head, Panther Marshal, Otter and Elephant, Grey Wolf, Cunning River-Deer, Sly Hare, Long Snake, Great Python, and Macaque before the gate, leading the host of demons, all crowded together at once.

Flustered, Wukong dropped the golden bells, revealed his true form, drew out his gold-banded As-You-Will cudgel, and, laying about with all his skill, struck out wildly in every direction.:「。」The demon king gathered up the treasure and issued the order, "Shut the front gate!" Hearing this, the demons obeyed — some shutting the gate, others fighting.Wukong, finding it hard to break free, put away his cudgel, shook his body, and transformed into a silly-looking fly, sticking himself to a stretch of stone wall untouched by the fire.:「。」:「?」:「。」:「。」The demons searched but could not find him, and reported, "Great King, the thief has gotten away, the thief has gotten away!" The demon king asked, "Did he go out through the gate?" The demons all said, "The front gate has been locked and bolted tight here — he could not have gone out." The demon king only said, "Search carefully." Some fetched water to douse the fire, others searched carefully, but there was no trace of him at all.:「The demon king said angrily, "What kind of thief is this? How very bold — transforming into the likeness of Youlai-Youqu, coming in to report to me, then staying at my side, and seizing the chance to steal my treasure. It's fortunate he hadn't yet carried it out of here.?」:「。」:「If he had taken it up to the mountaintop and it had met the heavenly wind, what would we have done?" The Tiger General stepped forward and said, "The Great King's vast good fortune matches Heaven's, and our own allotted span is not yet exhausted — that is why it was discovered." The Bear Commander stepped forward and said, "Great King, this thief is none other than that Sun Wukong who defeated our vanguard.。」:「。」:「。」He must have met Youlai-Youqu on the road, taken his life, seized his yellow banner, bronze gong, and ivory tally, transformed into his likeness, and come here to deceive the Great King." The demon king said, "Just so, just so — that is a reasonable view." He called out, "You underlings, search carefully and stay on guard — on no account open the gate and let him get away." And this is just what is meant by the verse that follows:

In the end, we do not know how Sun Wukong managed to escape the demon's gate; listen to the explanation given in the next chapter.

What it’s about

Disguised as one of the attendants demanded from Vermilion-Purple Kingdom, Wukong enters Sai Tai Sui's domain and learns about three golden bells worn by the demon. When shaken, they release fire, smoke and blinding sand, forcing Wukong back during their first confrontation. He also discovers that the abducted Golden-Sage Palace Lady has remained physically untouchable because a protective celestial garment covers her body.

Wukong changes into a tiny insect and speaks privately with the queen, assuring her that the king lives and that rescue is near. He then impersonates a trusted little demon and persuades Sai Tai Sui to surrender the bells for inspection, substituting counterfeits while hiding the genuine weapons. The theft reverses the balance of power, but the demon has not yet been returned to his owner and the queen has not yet reached home. The chapter ends with Wukong holding the means for the coming resolution.

When it was written 背景

The golden bells belong to the class of magical objects that make direct combat useless until provenance and operating rules are understood. Fire, smoke and sand turn battlefield elements into portable authority; stealing the bells matters more than striking their wearer. The queen's protective garment meanwhile complicates the captivity plot by preserving bodily distance without diminishing three years of coercion and separation. Learners can track Wukong's changes of scale and identity—female attendant, insect and demon servant—as stages of intelligence gathering. Like the counterfeit Plantain Fan and false Little Thunderclap, this episode asks who possesses an authentic object and who can recognize a substitution; here Wukong finally controls the copy.
