Monkey Wins the Palm-Leaf Fan and Quenches the Fiery Mountains

061Chapter 61

The tale tells that Niu Mowang caught up with the Great Sage Sun Wukong, and saw him walking along with the plantain fan slung over his shoulder, his face full of cheer and delight.:「The Demon King was greatly astonished and said, "So this monkey has actually wheedled out of her the method of using it as well.If I confront him and demand it back, he certainly won't give it to me;and if he fans me once, sending me a hundred and eight thousand li away, wouldn't that be exactly what he wants?I have heard that Tang Seng is waiting on the main road there. His second disciple, the pig-spirit, and his third disciple, the sand-spirit — I knew them both back when I was a demon myself.Let me change into the pig-spirit's shape and trick him in turn.。」I'll wager the monkey, being pleased with his own success, will not be too careful on guard." A fine Demon King indeed — he too had his seventy-two transformations, and his martial skill matched the Great Sage's, only his body was a bit more clumsy and heavy, lacking in agility, not so nimble and quick;he hid away his precious sword, recited a spell, gave his body a shake, and transformed at once into the very likeness of Bajie's face.:「。」Cutting across by a side path, he came face to face with the Great Sage and called out, "Elder brother, here I am."

The Great Sage was truly delighted. As the ancients said, "a cat that has won a fight is as merry as a tiger" — relying solely on his own prowess, he gave no thought at all to the newcomer's intentions. :「。」:「?」:「Seeing what looked like Bajie, he called out, "Brother, where are you off to?" Niu Mowang, seizing the opening, said, "Master saw you hadn't come back in so long, and feared that with Niu Mowang's great skill you couldn't beat him and wouldn't get the treasure, so he sent me to meet you." Wukong laughed and said, "No need to trouble yourself, I've already succeeded." Niu Mowang asked again, "How did you manage it?" Wukong said, "That old bull and I fought over a hundred rounds without either winning. Then he abandoned the fight and went down to the bottom of Bibo Pool on Luanshi Mountain to drink wine with a crowd of flood-dragon spirits and dragon spirits.I secretly followed him there, changed into a crab, stole the Water-Repelling Golden-Eyed Beast he rides, then changed into the old bull's own shape and went straight to Bajiao Cave to deceive that Rakshasi woman.。」:「That woman and old Sun here made a mock marriage of it for a while — it was old Sun's trick to swindle it out of her." Niu Wang said, "That must have taken quite some effort on your part.。」Brother, you've labored far too hard — let me carry the fan for you." The Great Sage Sun, not knowing true from false, and never thinking to be wary of this, handed the fan over to him.

It turned out that Niu Wang knew the secret of how the fan was made to grow and shrink; the moment it was in his hand, without anyone seeing what charm he worked with his fingers, it shrank back down to the size of an apricot leaf, returning to its true form.:「He opened his mouth and cursed, "You thieving monkey!?」:「。」:「Do you recognize me now?" When Wukong saw this, he regretted it bitterly within his heart, thinking, "This is my own fault." He gave a groan of resentment, stamped his foot, and cried aloud, "Ai!。」便All these years I've been the one shooting down wild geese, and today it's a little gosling that's pecked out my eye." Enraged until he was as fierce as thunder, he raised his iron rod and struck straight at the head;使the Demon King simply used the fan and gave him one wave.Little did he know that earlier, when the Great Sage had changed into a tiny gnat and entered the Rakshasi woman's belly, he had held the Wind-Fixing Pill in his mouth and unknowingly swallowed it down into his stomach; because of this his five viscera were all firm and his skin and bones all solid, so no matter how hard he was fanned, it could not move him at all.Niu Wang panicked, thrust the treasure into his mouth, and swung his sword with both hands to hack at him.The two of them fought a fine battle there in midair —

But let us leave the two of them locked in a struggle too close to call.:「?」:「。」:「便Now the tale turns to Tang Seng, sitting by the roadside; first the heat was scorching him, and second his heart was anxious and his mouth parched, so he asked the local god of Huoyan Mountain, "May I ask, Honored Deity, how great is Niu Mowang's magic power?" The local god said, "That Bull King's divine powers are no small thing, his magic is boundless — he is truly a match for the Great Sage." Sanzang said, "Wukong is one who can cover ground fast; ordinarily a journey of two thousand li he can make there and back in an instant — why has he been gone a whole day now?。」:「He must surely be locked in combat with that Bull King." He called out, "Wuneng, Wujing, one of you go out and meet your elder brother.。」:「。」:「。」:「。」Should he run into trouble, you must lend your strength at once and help him win the fan, to relieve me of this misery, so we may cross the mountain quickly and be on our way." Bajie said, "It's late in the day now — I did think of going to meet him, but I don't know the road to Jilei Mountain." The local god said, "This lowly god knows it. Let Juanlian Jiangjun stay behind to keep your master company, and I will go with you." Sanzang was overjoyed and said, "I am much obliged to you, Honored Deity — I shall thank you properly once this is done."

So Bajie braced himself, cinched up his black brocade robe, hefted his rake, and at once rose up on clouds and mist together with the local god, heading straight back toward the east.As they traveled on, they suddenly heard loud shouts and the clash of battle, with a wild wind swirling all about.Bajie lowered his cloud to look, and there indeed were Sun Wukong and Niu Wang locked in combat.:「?」:「。」:「。」:「?」:「The local god said, "Tianpeng, why haven't you gone forward yet? What are you waiting for?" The idiot raised his rake and called out loudly, "Elder brother, here I am." Wukong said resentfully, "You clumsy lout, how much of my great business have you ruined." Bajie said, "Master sent me to meet you, but since I didn't know the mountain roads, we spent a good while discussing it and had the local god guide me here — that's why I'm late. How have I ruined anything?" Wukong said, "It's not that I blame you for being late — it's this wretched bull, utterly without manners.。」:「I had gotten the fan out of the Rakshasi's hands, but this fellow changed into your very shape and claimed he'd come to meet me; for a moment I was so pleased that I handed the fan right into his hands, and then he showed his true form and has been fighting me here ever since — that's how the great business was ruined." When Bajie heard this he flew into a rage, raised his rake, and cursed him to his face, "You bloated, plague-ridden wretch!使?」使How dare you take on the shape of your own ancestor here, to cheat my elder brother and set the two of us brothers against each other?" And you should have seen him, laying about wildly with his rake, heedless of head or face.

As for Niu Wang, first, having fought Wukong a whole day, his strength was spent and his spirit worn;and second, seeing how fierce Bajie's rake was, he could not fend it off, and fled the field in defeat.:「Just then the local god of Huoyan Mountain, leading his spectral troops, blocked his way and said, "Great Strength King, hold your hand a moment.西Tang Sanzang is bound for the Western Heaven to fetch scriptures — there is no god who does not protect him, no heaven that does not favor him; all the Three Realms know of it, and the powers of the ten directions guard him.Quickly bring out the plantain fan and fan out the flames, so that he may pass without disaster or hindrance, and cross the mountain soon;。」:「otherwise, Heaven will hold you to account for your offense, and you will surely be put to death." Niu Wang said, "You, local god, understand nothing of the matter at all.便?」That wretched monkey seized my son, insulted my concubine, and swindled my wife — outrage upon outrage without any regard for decency. I could gladly swallow him whole, turn him into dung, and feed him to the dogs — how could I possibly lend him my treasure?"

:「Before he had even finished speaking, Bajie rushed up and cursed, "You knot-hearted, plague-swollen thing!。」使Hand over the fan at once, and I'll spare your life." Niu Wang had no choice but to turn back and take up his sword again to fight Bajie. The Great Sage Sun raised his rod to help him, and the three fought a fine battle there —

The Demon King fought on with fierce courage, moving and battling at once; they fought all through the night without either side gaining the upper hand, and soon dawn broke again.Ahead lay his own Jilei Mountain and the mouth of Moyun Cave; the three of them, together with the local god and the spectral troops, made such a deafening uproar that it startled Princess Yumian, who called her maid to see who was making all the noise outside.:「。」Just then a little demon guarding the gate came to report, "It's our lord, and that thunder-faced fellow from yesterday, together with a long-snouted, big-eared monk, fighting it out with the local god of Huoyan Mountain and his company." When Princess Yumian heard this, she at once ordered the chieftains great and small guarding outside to each take up spear and blade and lend their strength.Front and back she mustered a motley crowd, well over a hundred strong.:「。」:「。」Every one of them flaunted his mettle, brandishing spear and cudgel, and together they cried, "Great King, our lord, we come at Her Ladyship's inner command, especially to lend our strength." Niu Wang was overjoyed and said, "Well come, well come." The demon horde then rushed forward all together, hacking wildly.Caught off guard, Bajie dragged his rake behind him and fled the field in defeat. The Great Sage sprang onto a somersault cloud and leapt clear of the encircling ring. The spectral troops likewise scattered and fled in all directions.Old Niu, having won the day, gathered his demon horde and returned to the cave, shutting the gate tight — of him we'll say no more for now.

:「Wukong said, "This fellow is fierce indeed — from around the hour of shen yesterday, when old Sun began fighting him, right up until tonight, the outcome still hasn't been settled. It was fortunate you two came to lend a hand.Fighting so hard for half a day and a whole night like this, he still shows no sign of exhaustion. And just now that band of little demons was rough and sturdy too.?」:「He's shut the cave gate tight and won't come out — what are we to do about it?" Bajie said, "Brother, you left our master at the hour of si yesterday — how is it you didn't start fighting him until the hour of shen??」:「Where were you those two or three hours?" Wukong said, "After I left you, in no time at all I reached this mountain and met a woman; I asked her the way, and it turned out she was none other than his beloved concubine, Princess Yumian.使I gave her a scare with my iron rod, and she ran into the cave and called out that Bull King.He and I traded sharp words and made a great commotion for a while. Then we crossed weapons and fought for about two hours.Just as we were in the thick of it, someone came to invite him to a banquet.I followed him down to the bottom of Bibo Pool on Luanshi Mountain, changed into a crab, spied out the situation, stole his Water-Repelling Golden-Eyed Beast, then, disguised as old Niu himself, went back to Bajiao Cave on Cuiyun Mountain and deceived the Rakshasi woman, coaxing the fan out of her.Once outside I tried working it, testing out the method, and made the fan grow long, but I couldn't figure out how to shrink it back down.Just as I was carrying it along, he disguised himself with your very face and swindled it away from me instead.。」That's what cost me those two or three hours."

:「:『──。』Bajie said, "This is just what the saying goes: 'The bean-curd boat capsized in the great sea — into the broth it went, and into the water it went.' Now that we've lost the fan again, how can we ever get our master across the mountain?。」:「Let's just go back and take the long way round, blast it." The local god said, "Great Sage, don't fret, and Tianpeng, don't slacken. To speak of taking a roundabout road is to step onto a crooked bypath — that's no way for one who cultivates the truth to behave.:『。』As the old saying goes, 'One does not travel by shortcuts.' How could you possibly turn aside and go the long way round?。」:「Your master sits there on the proper road, watching and waiting with eager eyes for your success." Wukong said fiercely, "Just so, just so.Idiot, don't talk nonsense — the local god speaks with reason. What we ought to do now is go straight at him:

When Bajie heard this, he summoned up his resolve again.and said earnestly:

The two of them, leading the local god and the spectral troops, all pressed forward together, wielding the rake and swinging the iron rod, pounding away until, with a great clatter, they smashed the front gate of Moyun Cave to splinters.:「。」This so terrified the chieftains guarding outside that they trembled and shook, and rushed inside to report, "Great King, Sun Wukong has led his men and smashed through the front gate." Niu Wang was at that very moment recounting the whole affair in detail to Princess Yumian, still fuming with resentment at Sun Wukong.:「Hearing that the front gate had been smashed, he flew into a towering rage, hastily donned his armor, took up his iron cudgel, and came storming out from within, cursing, "You thieving monkey!?」:「Just how big a person do you think you are, that you dare come to my very door and run riot, smashing my gate to pieces?" Bajie pressed forward and cursed wildly, "You wretched old skin-peeler!What sort of creature are you, to go measuring who is big and who is small?。」:「。」:「Don't run — take my rake." Niu Wang bellowed, "You gluttonous, swill-swallowing lout, mind your own business — quick, call that monkey up here." Wukong said, "You senseless brute who doesn't know good from bad!Only yesterday I was still calling you brother, and today we're enemies.。」Watch out and taste my rod." Niu Wang met him with fierce courage. This bout surpassed even the one before. The three heroes tangled together in one mass, fighting fiercely —

The three of them fought on, heedless of life or death, for well over a hundred rounds more.Bajie, working himself into a reckless fury and relying on Wukong's divine powers, swung his rake and hacked away wildly.Unable to fend it off, Niu Wang turned and fled the field, making for the cave gate.:「。」But the local god and the spectral troops blocked the cave gate and shouted, "Great Strength King, where do you think you're going? We are here." The old bull, unable to get into the cave, hastily spun around, and seeing Bajie and Wukong closing in on him, panicked, threw off his armor, flung away his iron cudgel, gave his body a shake, and transformed into a swan, flying off into the empty sky.

:「。」西Wukong saw this and laughed, "Bajie, old Niu has gotten away." The idiot had no idea at all, and the local god couldn't tell either; the two of them looked east and west in confusion, searching all around Jilei Mountain in vain.:「?」:「。」:「。」:「?」:「Wukong pointed and said, "Isn't that thing flying in the sky?" Bajie said, "That's just a swan." Wukong said, "That's exactly what old Niu turned into." The local god said, "If that's so, what shall we do?" Wukong said, "You two break through this gate and wipe out every last one of the demon horde, tear down his lair, and cut off his way home.。」Meanwhile old Sun will go match him transformation for transformation." Bajie and the local god, following his words, went to break through the cave gate — of that we'll say no more for now.

The Great Sage put away his gold-banded rod, made a hand-sign, recited a spell, gave his body a shake, and transformed into a sea-hawk.With a whoosh of his wings he shot up into a gap in the clouds, then dove down and landed on the swan's back, seizing its neck and pecking at its eyes.Niu Wang, knowing at once this was Sun Wukong transformed, hurriedly shook out his wings and changed into a yellow eagle to turn and peck at the sea-hawk instead.Wukong then changed into a black phoenix, bent solely on pursuing the yellow eagle.Niu Wang, recognizing him, changed again into a white crane, gave a long cry, and flew off toward the south.Wukong stood firm, shook out his feathers, and changed into a scarlet phoenix, giving a high call.Seeing that a phoenix is king among birds, and that no bird dared act rashly before it, the white crane, with a flick of its wings, plunged down onto a mountain cliff and, giving its body a shake, changed into a musk deer, blinking sleepily as it grazed on grass before the cliff.Wukong recognized him at once, folded his own wings and dropped down too, changing into a starving tiger, tail lashing and paws bounding, ready to chase down the deer for its prey. The Demon King, flustered, changed again into a great leopard with coin-shaped spots, meaning to harm the starving tiger. When Wukong saw this, he faced into the wind, gave his head a shake, and changed into a golden-eyed lion, its roar like thunder, its head and forehead of iron and bronze, turning about again to devour the great leopard.Niu Wang, growing desperate, changed into a bear, and, letting his legs fly, came to seize the lion.Wukong rolled over and changed into a mangy elephant, its trunk like a long snake, its tusks like bamboo shoots, and, uncoiling its trunk, moved to wrap up the bear.

Niu Wang gave a little laugh, "Hee, hee," and revealed his true form: a great white bull, its head like a towering ridge, its eyes flashing like lightning, its two horns like a pair of iron towers, its teeth set in rows like sharp blades — from head to tail over a thousand zhang in length, and from hoof to back eight hundred zhang in height.:「He called out loudly to Wukong, "You thieving monkey!?」:「!」What can you do to me now?" Wukong likewise revealed his own true form, drew out his gold-banded rod, arched his back, and shouted, "Grow!" — growing at once to a height of ten thousand zhang, his head like Mount Tai, his eyes like the sun and moon, his mouth like a pool of blood, his teeth like great gate-panels; gripping his iron rod, he struck straight at the head.使Niu Wang braced his head hard and used his horns to butt at him. This battle truly shook the ridges and rocked the mountains, startling Heaven and stirring Earth. There is a poem to bear witness. The poem reads:

The two of them displayed their divine powers to the full, contending there in the midst of the mountains, until they startled every spirit passing through the void, along with the Golden-Headed Guardian, the Six Jia and Six Ding, and the eighteen Guardians of the Faith, who all came to surround and hem in the Demon King. The Demon King showed not the slightest fear — see how he butted his head this way and that, his two iron horns standing stiff and gleaming, thrusting and goring back and forth;charging south, then charging north, his bristling, thickly-muscled tail lashing and swaying from side to side. The Great Sage Sun met him head-on in front, while the host of spirits struck at him from every side.便The Bull King, driven to desperation, rolled upon the ground, resumed his original form, and fled toward Plantain Cave. The Pilgrim also put away his colossal magic form and, together with the assembled gods, pursued him from behind. The demon king burst into the cave, shut the gates, and refused to come out.The whole company surrounded Mount Cuiyun so tightly that not even water could have leaked through.

Just as they were all attacking the entrance, they suddenly heard Bajie approaching with the local earth gods and spirit soldiers, shouting as they came.:「?」:「When the Pilgrim saw him, he asked, “How went matters at Moyun Cave?” Bajie laughed and said, “That old bull’s mistress was killed by one stroke of my rake. When I stripped away her clothes and looked, she proved to be a jade-faced vixen spirit.鹿As for her horde of demons, they were all creatures such as donkeys, mules, calves, bulls, badgers, foxes, raccoon dogs, roebucks, sheep, tigers, elks, and deer; by now every one of them has been exterminated. We also set fire to the chambers and galleries of their cave dwelling.。」:「The earth gods said that he had another household living on this mountain, so we came here to sweep it clean as well.” The Pilgrim said, “Worthy brother, you have rendered meritorious service; excellent, excellent!Old Sun merely matched transformations with that old bull, but could not defeat him.He changed into an immeasurably huge white bull, and I assumed a form that emulated Heaven and Earth.。」:「?」:「While we were locked horn to horn, the gods were gracious enough to descend and besiege him for a long while; but he resumed his original form and escaped into the cave.” Bajie asked, “Is that Plantain Cave?” The Pilgrim said, “It is, it is.。」:「?」The Rakshasa woman is in there.” Bajie cried fiercely, “If that is so, why not break in, destroy the wretch, and demand the fan? Why give him time to linger, grow cunning, and exchange endearments with his wife?”

That fine Idiot, mustering all his might, raised his rake and struck the gate. With a tremendous crash, he brought down one side of the rocky cliff together with the gate.:「。」The maidservant hurriedly reported in alarm, “Master, I do not know who has smashed the entire front gate.” The Bull King had only just run inside and, still panting, was telling the Rakshasa woman how he had fought Sun the Pilgrim over the fan.On hearing the report, he was furious; he spat the fan from his mouth and handed it to the Rakshasa woman. :「Taking the fan in her hands, the Rakshasa woman said with tears filling her eyes, “Great King, give this fan to that macaque and have him withdraw his forces.” The Bull King replied, “My lady, the object may be small, but our hatred runs deep.。」Sit here awhile and wait for me to go out and fight him once more.” The demon put his armor in order again, chose a pair of precious swords, and strode out through the gate.使便He came upon Bajie striking the gate with his rake; without another word, the old bull drew a sword and hacked straight at his head.退Bajie raised his rake to meet the blow, retreated several steps, and backed out through the entrance, where the Great Sage was already swinging his cudgel down upon the Bull King’s head. The Bull Demon immediately mounted a raging wind and leapt away from the cave; once again they faced one another on Mount Cuiyun. The many gods encircled him on every side, while the earth gods and their soldiers attacked from left and right. What a splendid battle this proved to be:

The Bull King fought desperately, heedless of his life, but after more than fifty bouts he could no longer withstand them; defeated, he fled northward.:「There the Mighty Vajra Who Overcomes with Dharma, from Mystic Demon Cliff on Mount Wutai, barred his way and shouted, “Bull Demon, where do you think you are going?。」I was sent by the Buddha Shakyamuni to spread a net over Heaven and Earth and capture you here.” Even as he spoke, the Great Sage, Bajie, and the assembled gods came racing up from behind.:「。」便:「The demon king wheeled about in panic and fled south, only to encounter the Supremely Victorious Vajra of Boundless Magic Power, from Cool Cave on Mount Emei, who blocked his path and cried, “By the Buddha’s decree I wait here expressly to seize you.” His heart in turmoil and his legs gone weak, the Bull King hastily turned and fled east, where the Mighty Vajra Pilushamen, from Mo’er Cliff on Mount Sumeru, intercepted him and shouted, “Where are you going, old bull?。」退西:「By the Tathagata’s secret command, I have come to capture you.” The Bull King recoiled in terror and fled west, only to meet the Ever-Abiding Vajra, Indestructible Honored King, from Golden Cloud Ridge on Mount Kunlun, who opposed him and cried, “Where can this wretch hope to escape?西?」I received the Buddha Elder’s own command at the Great Thunderclap Monastery in the Western Heaven to bar your way here. Who would let you pass?”

The old bull trembled with fear, but it was too late for regret.Seeing Buddhist troops and celestial generals in every direction, like a vast net spread high around him, he truly had no hope of escaping with his life.便In the midst of his panic, he again heard the Pilgrim leading the host in pursuit, so he mounted a cloud and fled upward.:「But Pagoda-Bearing Heavenly King Li and Prince Nezha, leading Fish-Belly Yakshas and the Mighty Miracle General, had screened off the sky above and called, “Hold there! Hold there!。」使By the Jade Emperor’s decree, we have come expressly to exterminate you.” Driven to desperation, the Bull King shook himself and transformed as before into a huge white bull, thrusting his two iron horns at the Heavenly King.使The Heavenly King struck at him with his saber.Sun the Pilgrim arrived close behind.:「Prince Nezha called out sternly, “Great Sage, as I am clad in armor, I cannot salute you properly.。」:「?」:「。」Yesterday my unworthy father and I saw the Buddha Tathagata send a dispatch to the Jade Emperor, reporting that the Tang Monk’s road was blocked at the Mountain of Flames and that Great Sage Sun could not subdue the Bull Demon King. The Jade Emperor issued a decree expressly ordering my father to lead his host here to assist you.” The Pilgrim said, “This wretch’s powers are considerable, and now he has changed into such a body. What are we to do with him?” The prince laughed and said, “Have no doubts, Great Sage; watch me capture him.”

:「!」使The prince cried, “Change!” and transformed into a being with three heads and six arms. Flying through the air, he landed on the Bull King’s back and swept his Demon-Slaying Sword across the neck, unexpectedly cutting off the bull’s head. The Heavenly King put away his saber and only then exchanged greetings with the Pilgrim. But another head thrust itself out of the Bull King’s neck, breathing black vapor from its mouth and shooting golden rays from its eyes.Nezha struck again with his sword, and where the head fell, yet another emerged. He hacked more than a dozen times in succession, and each time another head immediately grew in its place.便Nezha took out his fire wheels and hung them upon the old bull’s horns, then blew forth true fire. The roaring, blazing flames burned the Bull King until he thrashed about and bellowed wildly, tossing his head and lashing his tail.:「。」:「。」:「。」Just as he tried to transform and escape, Pagoda-Bearing Heavenly King Li fixed his true form in the Demon-Revealing Mirror, leaving him unable to budge or find any means of flight. He could only cry, “Spare my life! I am willing to submit to the Buddhist fold.” Nezha said, “If you value your life, hand over the fan at once.” The Bull King replied, “The fan is kept by my humble wife in the mountain.”

At this, Nezha took down his Demon-Binding Cord, looped it across the bull’s neck, seized him by the muzzle, threaded the cord through his nostrils, and led him away by hand.Sun the Pilgrim then assembled the Four Great Vajras, the Six Ding and Six Jia deities, the Guardian Garanas, Pagoda-Bearing Heavenly King Li, the Mighty Miracle General, Bajie, the earth gods, and the spirit soldiers; escorting the white bull in their midst, they returned to the entrance of Plantain Cave.:「。」穿The old bull called, “Wife, bring out the fan and save my life!” Hearing his voice, the Rakshasa hastily removed her hairpins and ornaments, took off her colored garments, bound up her black hair like a Daoist nun, donned plain white robes like a Buddhist nun, and came out holding in both hands the plantain-leaf fan, which was some twelve feet long.:「。」When she saw the Vajras, the assembled sages, the Heavenly King, and his son, she hurriedly knelt, knocked her head upon the ground, and pleaded, “May the bodhisattvas spare the lives of my husband and me. I shall respectfully present this fan to Uncle Sun, that he may accomplish his task.” The Pilgrim stepped forward and took the fan, then mounted an auspicious cloud with the whole company and returned directly eastward.

Now the Tang Monk and Friar Sand had stood awhile and sat awhile, waiting for the Pilgrim; when he did not return for a long time, their anxiety was beyond description.滿滿:「?」:「Suddenly they saw auspicious clouds filling the sky and blessed radiance covering the earth, drifting and billowing as the host of gods drew near. The elder, frightened, asked, “Wujing, whose divine army is approaching over there?” Friar Sand recognized them and said, “Master, those are the Four Great Vajras, the Golden-Headed Jiedi, the Six Jia and Six Ding deities, the Guardian Garanas, and all the gods who aided them along the way.。」 :「The one leading the bull is Third Prince Nezha; the one holding the mirror is Pagoda-Bearing Heavenly King Li; our eldest brother carries the plantain-leaf fan; our second brother and the earth gods follow behind; and all the rest are divine troops serving as their escort.” Hearing this, the Tang Monk changed into his Vairocana cap, put on his kasaya, and went with Wujing to bow in welcome to the assembled sages, saying in gratitude, “What virtue or ability has this disciple of mine, that we should trouble all you honored sages to descend to the mortal world?” The Four Great Vajras replied, “Rejoice, holy monk, for your meritorious journey is nearly complete.。」We were sent by the Buddha’s command to assist you. You must exert yourself fully in your cultivation and never grow negligent even for an instant.” The Tang Monk clicked his teeth in reverence and kowtowed, accepting their charge with body and soul.

Holding the fan, Great Sage Sun approached the mountain and, using all his strength, waved it once. The flames upon the Mountain of Flames subsided completely, and their glow vanished into stillness.Delighted beyond measure, the Pilgrim waved it a second time; at once there came a soft, whispering murmur, and a cool breeze began gently to stir.滿At the third wave, dense clouds filled the sky and fine rain fell in a soft drizzle.A poem bears witness to this. The poem says:

At this, the Tang Monk was freed from heat and vexation, his heart refreshed and his mind at peace. The four pilgrims bowed in gratitude, took leave of the Vajras, and each of those holy ones returned to his sacred mountain. The Six Ding and Six Jia deities rose into the sky to continue their protection. The gods who had aided them along the way dispersed in every direction. The Heavenly King and the prince led away the bull and returned directly to the Buddha’s domain to report the completion of their mission.Only the local earth god remained beside the Rakshasa woman, keeping her there in attendance.

:「?」:「。」:「The Pilgrim said, “Rakshasa, why do you not leave? What are you still standing here waiting for?” The Rakshasa knelt and pleaded, “I earnestly beg the Great Sage to show mercy and return my fan.” Bajie shouted, “You shameless wretch, you have no sense of your place! It is enough that we have spared your life; how dare you ask for the fan as well?Do you think that after we carry it across the mountain, we cannot sell it and buy ourselves some refreshments? After expending so much strength and effort, would we simply give it back to you?。」:「The rain is misting down—why have you not gone home?” The Rakshasa bowed again and said, “The Great Sage originally said that he would return it after fanning out the fire. After all that has happened, it is truly too late for regret. It was only because I was narrow-minded that so many forces had to be mobilized and put to such trouble. We too have cultivated ourselves into human form; we simply have not yet attained the true fruit.西Now that my husband has revealed his true form and been taken westward, I shall never again dare to behave recklessly.。」 :「便I beg you to bestow the fan upon me, that from this moment I may reform myself and cultivate my nature and preserve my life.” The earth god said, “Great Sage, since this woman thoroughly understands how to extinguish the fire, let her eradicate its very root and then return the fan to her. Thus this little god may dwell here in peace, save the people of this region, and receive some blood offerings; that would indeed be a great kindness.” The Pilgrim said, “When I questioned the villagers, they told me that after the fire on this mountain is fanned out, they harvest only one year’s grain before it breaks out again.?」:「。」How can its root be eradicated?” The Rakshasa replied, “To destroy the root of the fire, one need only wave the fan forty-nine times in succession, and it will never blaze up again.”

Hearing this, the Pilgrim gripped the fan, exerted all his strength, and waved it forty-nine times in succession toward the mountaintop; torrents of rain poured down upon the mountain. It truly was a treasure: rain fell wherever there had been fire, while the sky remained clear wherever there had been none. The master and his disciples stood where there had been no fire and were not soaked by the rain.

After resting there for the night, they packed their horse and luggage early the next morning and returned the fan to the Rakshasa.:「The Pilgrim also said, “If Old Sun did not return it to you, people might say that I do not keep my word.Take the fan back to your mountain, and never cause trouble again.。」Seeing that you have attained human form, I shall spare you and let you go.” The Rakshasa took the fan, recited a spell, pinched it down to the size of an apricot leaf, and held it in her mouth. After bowing in gratitude to the assembled sages, she concealed her name and devoted herself to cultivation; in later years she too attained the true fruit, and her name has remained forever renowned in the Buddhist canon. The Rakshasa and the earth god both gave grateful thanks for this grace and followed behind to see them off.The Pilgrim, Bajie, and Friar Sand escorted the Tang Monk onward; from then on their bodies were cool and the ground beneath their feet moist and refreshing.Truly it is said:

But how many years would pass before they returned to the Eastern Land? Listen to the explanation in the next chapter.

What it’s about

Wukong and Bajie press their attack on the Bull Demon King, whose immense strength and transformations make him a match for the Monkey King. The Bull King repeatedly escapes or changes form, while local spirits and celestial troops close off his routes. Nezha finally uses his fire-tipped spear and transforming wheels against the demon's gigantic white-ox body, and the combined divine force compels him to submit rather than letting Wukong settle an old brotherhood by himself.

Princess Iron Fan yields the genuine plantain fan after her husband is defeated. Wukong learns to use it properly and fans the Flaming Mountains until rain falls, crops can grow and the road becomes passable; he then returns the treasure instead of keeping it. The pilgrims receive provisions and gratitude from the inhabitants before crossing the range, bringing to an end an obstacle created by Wukong's earlier havoc in Heaven and sustained by the Bull family’s grievance over Red Boy.

When it was written 背景

The three-chapter fan episode ends through coalition, not a solitary heroic victory. Wukong's equal from his rebellious youth can be contained only when Buddhist purpose, celestial policing and local need align, and even then the life-giving fan remains Princess Iron Fan's property. The extinction of fire has agricultural consequences that make the pilgrims' private passage a public deliverance. Learners can use the sequence of animal transformations as a narrative spine, then notice the chapter's language of borrowing, surrender and return. The resolution closes accounts reaching back to the heavenly furnace and Red Boy while allowing the estranged demon household a future beyond the travelers' departure.
