土地說：「大力王即牛魔王也。」行者道：「這山本是牛魔王放的火，假名火焰山？」土地道：「不是，不是。The Land God said, "The Great Power King is none other than Niu Mowang." Xingzhe said, "So this mountain's fire was originally set by Niu Mowang, and it merely goes by the false name of the Flaming Mountains?" The Land God said, "No, no.大聖若肯赦小神之罪，方敢直言。」行者道：「你有何罪？If the Great Sage is willing to pardon this lowly spirit's crime, only then would I dare speak plainly." Xingzhe said, "What crime have you committed?直說無妨。」土地道：「這火原是大聖放的。」行者怒道：「我在那裡？Speak plainly, it's of no harm." The Land God said, "This fire was originally set by the Great Sage himself." Xingzhe said angrily, "When was I ever here?你這等亂談。You're talking such nonsense.我可是放火之輩？」土地道：「是你也認不得我了。Am I the sort who goes about setting fires?" The Land God said, "It's just that you no longer recognize me.此間原無這座山。Originally there was no mountain here at all.因大聖五百年前大鬧天宮時，被顯聖擒了，壓赴老君，將大聖安於八卦爐內。It was because, five hundred years ago, when the Great Sage caused great havoc in Heaven, you were captured by the Illustrious Sage, escorted before Laojun, and placed inside his Eight Trigrams Furnace.煅煉之後開鼎，被你蹬倒丹爐，落了幾個磚來，內有餘火，到此處化為火焰山。After the smelting, when the cauldron was opened, you kicked the elixir furnace over, and several bricks fell down; within them lingered leftover fire, which came to this place and turned into the Flaming Mountains.我本是兜率宮守爐的道人，當被老君怪我失守，降下此間，就做了火焰山土地也。」豬八戒聞言，恨道：「怪道你這等打扮，原來是道士變的土地。」I was originally the Taoist priest who tended the furnace in the Doushuai Palace; because Laojun blamed me for failing in my duty, I was banished down here, and so became the Land God of the Flaming Mountains." When Zhu Bajie heard this, he said resentfully, "No wonder you're dressed like that — so you're a Taoist priest turned Land God."

土地说：「大力王即牛魔王也。」行者道：「这山本是牛魔王放的火，假名火焰山？」土地道：「不是，不是。大圣若肯赦小神之罪，方敢直言。」行者道：「你有何罪？直说无妨。」土地道：「这火原是大圣放的。」行者怒道：「我在那里？你这等乱谈。我可是放火之辈？」土地道：「是你也认不得我了。此间原无这座山。因大圣五百年前大闹天宫时，被显圣擒了，压赴老君，将大圣安于八卦炉内。煅炼之后开鼎，被你蹬倒丹炉，落了几个砖来，内有余火，到此处化为火焰山。我本是兜率宫守炉的道人，当被老君怪我失守，降下此间，就做了火焰山土地也。」猪八戒闻言，恨道：「怪道你这等打扮，原来是道士变的土地。」

行者半信不信道：「你且說，早尋大力王何故？』土地道：「大力王乃羅剎女丈夫。Half believing and half doubting, Xingzhe said, "Well then, tell me — why must I first seek out the Great Power King?" The Land God said, "The Great Power King is the husband of the Rakshasi.他這向撇了羅剎，現在積雷山摩雲洞。Of late he has abandoned the Rakshasi and now lives at Moyun Cave on Mount Jilei.有個萬年狐王，那狐王死了，遺下一個女兒，叫做玉面公主。There was a Fox King of ten thousand years' age; when that Fox King died, he left behind a daughter called Princess Yumian.那公主有百萬家私，無人掌管。The princess had a fortune worth a million in household wealth, with no one to manage it.二年前，訪著牛魔王神通廣大，情願倒陪家私，招贅為夫。Two years ago, having learned that Niu Mowang possessed vast magical powers, she was willing to hand over her entire fortune and take him in as a husband married into her family.那牛王棄了羅剎，久不回顧。That Bull King abandoned the Rakshasi and has not looked back at her in a long time.若大聖尋著牛王，拜求來此，方借得真扇：一則搧息火焰，可保師父前進；If the Great Sage can find the Bull King and beg him respectfully to come here, only then can you truly borrow the fan: first, to fan out the flames so your master may proceed onward;二來永除火患，可保此地生靈；second, to eliminate the fire hazard forever, so the living creatures of this place may be preserved;三者赦我歸天，回繳老君法旨。」行者道：「積雷山坐落何處？and third, to pardon me so I may return to Heaven and report back to fulfill Laojun's decree." Xingzhe said, "Where is Mount Jilei located?到彼有多少程途？」土地道：「在正南方。How far is the journey from here to there?" The Land God said, "It lies due south.此間到彼，有三千餘里。」From here to there is over three thousand li."

行者半信不信道：「你且说，早寻大力王何故？』土地道：「大力王乃罗刹女丈夫。他这向撇了罗刹，现在积雷山摩云洞。有个万年狐王，那狐王死了，遗下一个女儿，叫做玉面公主。那公主有百万家私，无人掌管。二年前，访著牛魔王神通广大，情愿倒陪家私，招赘为夫。那牛王弃了罗刹，久不回顾。若大圣寻著牛王，拜求来此，方借得真扇：一则扇息火焰，可保师父前进；二来永除火患，可保此地生灵；三者赦我归天，回缴老君法旨。」行者道：「积雷山坐落何处？到彼有多少程途？」土地道：「在正南方。此间到彼，有三千余里。」

行者聞言，即吩咐沙僧、八戒保護師父，又教土地陪伴勿回。Upon hearing this, Xingzhe at once instructed Sha Seng and Bajie to protect the Master, and told the Land God to stay and keep them company without leaving.隨即忽的一聲，渺然不見。Then, with a sudden whoosh, he vanished without a trace.那裡消半個時辰，早見一座高山凌漢。In less than half an hour's time, he already saw a towering mountain that rose up into the clouds.按落雲頭，停立巔峰之上觀看，真是好山：He brought his cloud down and stood upon the summit to look around — truly a fine mountain:

行者闻言，即吩咐沙僧、八戒保护师父，又教土地陪伴勿回。随即忽的一声，渺然不见。那里消半个时辰，早见一座高山凌汉。按落云头，停立巅峰之上观看，真是好山：

大聖看夠多時，步下尖峰，入深山，找尋路徑。After the Great Sage had gazed his fill, he walked down from the sharp peak, entered the deep mountains, and searched for a path.正自沒個消息，忽見松陰下有一女子，手折了一枝香蘭，嬝嬝娜娜而來。Just as he was finding no clue at all, he suddenly saw, beneath the shade of the pines, a woman coming toward him with graceful, swaying steps, holding a sprig of fragrant orchid she had just picked.大聖閃在怪石之傍，定睛觀看，那女子怎生模樣：The Great Sage slipped aside behind a strange rock and fixed his eyes on her, studying what the woman looked like:

大圣看够多时，步下尖峰，入深山，找寻路径。正自没个消息，忽见松阴下有一女子，手折了一枝香兰，嬝嬝娜娜而来。大圣闪在怪石之傍，定睛观看，那女子怎生模样：

那女子漸漸走近石邊，大聖躬身施禮，緩緩而言曰：「女菩薩何往？」那女子未曾觀看，聽得叫問，卻自擡頭。As the woman gradually drew near the rock, the Great Sage bowed and made his greeting, saying slowly, "Where is the lady bodhisattva headed?" The woman had not yet noticed him, but hearing herself addressed, she raised her head.忽見大聖的相貌醜陋，老大心驚，欲退難退，欲行難行，只得戰兢兢，勉強答道：「你是何方來者？The moment she saw the Great Sage's ugly face, she was greatly startled; wishing to retreat she could not retreat, wishing to walk on she could not walk on, and could only, trembling, force herself to answer, "Where do you come from?敢在此間問誰？」大聖沉思道：「我若說出取經求扇之事，恐這廝與牛王有親。How dare you question someone here?" The Great Sage thought to himself, "If I speak of fetching scriptures and seeking the fan, I fear this woman may be related to the Bull King.且只以假親托意，來請魔王之言而答方可。」那女子見他不語，變了顏色，怒聲喝道：「你是何人，敢來問我？」大聖躬身陪笑道：「我是翠雲山來的，初到貴處，不知路徑。I had best answer only by pretending kinship, saying I have come to invite the Demon King." Seeing him say nothing, the woman changed countenance and shouted angrily, "Who are you, that you dare question me?" The Great Sage bowed with a smile and said, "I have come from Mount Cuiyun; having just arrived in these parts, I do not know the way.敢問菩薩，此間可是積雷山？」那女子道：「正是。」大聖道：「有個摩雲洞，坐落何處？」那女子道：「你尋那洞做甚？」大聖道：「我是翠雲山芭蕉洞鐵扇公主央來請牛魔王的。」May I ask, bodhisattva, is this Mount Jilei?" The woman said, "It is indeed." The Great Sage said, "There is a Moyun Cave — where is it located?" The woman said, "What do you want with that cave?" The Great Sage said, "I have been sent by Princess Iron Fan of Bajiao Cave on Mount Cuiyun to invite Niu Mowang."

那女子渐渐走近石边，大圣躬身施礼，缓缓而言曰：「女菩萨何往？」那女子未曾观看，听得叫问，却自抬头。忽见大圣的相貌丑陋，老大心惊，欲退难退，欲行难行，只得战兢兢，勉强答道：「你是何方来者？敢在此间问谁？」大圣沉思道：「我若说出取经求扇之事，恐这厮与牛王有亲。且只以假亲托意，来请魔王之言而答方可。」那女子见他不语，变了颜色，怒声喝道：「你是何人，敢来问我？」大圣躬身陪笑道：「我是翠云山来的，初到贵处，不知路径。敢问菩萨，此间可是积雷山？」那女子道：「正是。」大圣道：「有个摩云洞，坐落何处？」那女子道：「你寻那洞做甚？」大圣道：「我是翠云山芭蕉洞铁扇公主央来请牛魔王的。」

那女子一聽鐵扇公主請牛魔王之言，心中大怒，徹耳根子通紅，潑口罵道：「這賤婢，著實無知。The instant the woman heard that Princess Iron Fan had sent for Niu Mowang, she flew into a rage, red clear to the roots of her ears, and cursed foully, "That wretched hussy — she is truly shameless.牛王自到我家，未及二載，也不知送了他多少珠翠金銀、綾羅緞疋，年供柴，月供米，自自在在受用，還不識羞，又來請他怎的？」大聖聞言，情知是玉面公主，故意掣出金箍棒，大喝一聲道：「你這潑賤，將家私買住牛王，誠然是陪錢嫁漢，你倒不羞，卻敢罵誰？」那女子見了，諕得魄散魂飛，沒好步，亂��金蓮，戰兢兢回頭便走。Since the Bull King came to my house, in less than two years I don't know how many pearls, jade, gold, silver, silks and satins I have given him — supplying him firewood by the year and rice by the month, letting him enjoy himself in perfect comfort — and still she has no shame, coming again to invite him? What for?" Hearing this, the Great Sage knew at once that this was Princess Yumian, and deliberately drew out his golden-hooped rod, shouting fiercely, "You shameless wretch, buying and keeping the Bull King with your family fortune — you're truly one who paid money to get herself a husband, and instead of feeling ashamed you dare curse someone else?" Seeing this, the woman was so frightened her soul scattered and her wits flew away; stumbling badly, her tiny bound feet flailing in confusion, she turned and fled, trembling all the while.這大聖吆吆喝喝，隨後相跟。The Great Sage, shouting and hollering, followed close behind her.原來穿過松陰，就是摩雲洞口。It turned out that just past the shade of the pines lay the entrance to Moyun Cave.女子跑進去，撲的把門關了。The woman ran inside and slammed the door shut with a bang.大聖卻收了金箍棒，停步看時，好所在：The Great Sage then put away his golden-hooped rod, stopped, and looked around — what a fine place:

那女子一听铁扇公主请牛魔王之言，心中大怒，彻耳根子通红，泼口骂道：「这贱婢，著实无知。牛王自到我家，未及二载，也不知送了他多少珠翠金银、绫罗缎疋，年供柴，月供米，自自在在受用，还不识羞，又来请他怎的？」大圣闻言，情知是玉面公主，故意掣出金箍棒，大喝一声道：「你这泼贱，将家私买住牛王，诚然是陪钱嫁汉，你倒不羞，却敢骂谁？」那女子见了，諕得魄散魂飞，没好步，乱𤜱金莲，战兢兢回头便走。这大圣吆吆喝喝，随后相跟。原来穿过松阴，就是摩云洞口。女子跑进去，扑的把门关了。大圣却收了金箍棒，停步看时，好所在：

且不言行者這裡觀看景致。For now, let us leave aside Xingzhe here admiring the scenery.卻說那女子跑得粉汗淋淋，諕得蘭心吸吸，徑入書房裡面。Let us instead tell of the woman, who ran until her powdered face streamed with sweat, her heart pounding with fright, straight into the study.原來牛魔王正在那裡靜玩丹書。It happened that Niu Mowang was in there quietly enjoying a book on alchemy.這女子沒好氣倒在懷裡，抓耳撓腮，放聲大哭。The woman, seething with anger, collapsed into his arms, scratching at her ears and cheeks in distress, and burst into loud sobbing.牛王滿面陪笑道：「美人，休得煩惱。The Bull King, his whole face wreathed in an ingratiating smile, said, "My beauty, don't be troubled.有甚話說？」那女子跳天索地，口中罵道：「潑魔害殺我也！」牛王笑道：「你為甚事罵我？」女子道：「我因父母無依，招你護身養命。What is it you wish to say?" The woman stamped about wildly, cursing, "You wretched demon, you've as good as killed me!" The Bull King laughed and said, "Why are you cursing me?" The woman said, "Because my parents left me with no one to rely on, I took you in to protect and support me.江湖中說你是條好漢，你原來是個懼內的庸夫。」牛王聞說，將女子抱住道：「美人，我有那些不是處？Everyone in the world says you're a fine, bold fellow, but it turns out you're just a mediocre man who's afraid of his wife." When the Bull King heard this, he took the woman in his arms and said, "My beauty, in what way have I wronged you?你且慢慢說來，我與你陪禮。」女子道：「適才我在洞外閑步花陰，折蘭採蕙，忽有一個毛臉雷公嘴的和尚，猛地前來施禮，把我嚇了個呆掙。Tell me slowly, and I shall apologize to you." The woman said, "Just now, as I was strolling idly among the flowers outside the cave, picking orchids, suddenly a hairy-faced monk with a mouth like the Thunder God's came abruptly forward and made a bow to me, giving me such a fright that I froze stiff.及定性問是何人，他說是鐵扇公主央他來請牛魔王的。When I steadied myself and asked who he was, he said he had been sent by Princess Iron Fan to invite Niu Mowang.被我說了兩句，他倒罵了我一場，將一根棍子趕著我打。After I said a few words to him, he instead cursed me roundly and chased after me with a cudgel, trying to beat me.若不是走得快些，幾乎被他打死。Had I not run fast enough, I would almost have been beaten to death by him.這不是招你為禍？Isn't this disaster brought upon me because of you?害殺我也。」牛王聞言，卻與他整容陪禮，溫存良久，女子方才息氣。You've as good as killed me." Hearing this, the Bull King composed himself and apologized to her, comforting her tenderly for a long while, until at last the woman's anger subsided.魔王卻發狠道：「美人在上，不敢相瞞。The Demon King then said fiercely, "My beauty, I dare not hide anything from you.那芭蕉洞雖是僻靜，卻清幽自在。That Bajiao Cave, though remote and secluded, is a tranquil and carefree place.我山妻自幼修持，也是個得道的女仙，卻是家門嚴謹，內無一尺之童，焉得有雷公嘴的男子央來？My wife there has cultivated herself since childhood and is herself an immortal who has attained the Way; her household is strictly run, without so much as a young boy inside it — how then could there be some Thunder-God-mouthed man sent from there?這想是那裡來的妖怪，或者假綽名聲，至此訪我。This must be some demon come from elsewhere, perhaps borrowing that name falsely to come here and seek me out.等我出去看看。」Let me go out and have a look."

且不言行者这里观看景致。却说那女子跑得粉汗淋淋，諕得兰心吸吸，径入书房里面。原来牛魔王正在那里静玩丹书。这女子没好气倒在怀里，抓耳挠腮，放声大哭。牛王满面陪笑道：「美人，休得烦恼。有甚话说？」那女子跳天索地，口中骂道：「泼魔害杀我也！」牛王笑道：「你为甚事骂我？」女子道：「我因父母无依，招你护身养命。江湖中说你是条好汉，你原来是个惧内的庸夫。」牛王闻说，将女子抱住道：「美人，我有那些不是处？你且慢慢说来，我与你陪礼。」女子道：「适才我在洞外闲步花阴，折兰采蕙，忽有一个毛脸雷公嘴的和尚，猛地前来施礼，把我吓了个呆挣。及定性问是何人，他说是铁扇公主央他来请牛魔王的。被我说了两句，他倒骂了我一场，将一根棍子赶著我打。若不是走得快些，几乎被他打死。这不是招你为祸？害杀我也。」牛王闻言，却与他整容陪礼，温存良久，女子方才息气。魔王却发狠道：「美人在上，不敢相瞒。那芭蕉洞虽是僻静，却清幽自在。我山妻自幼修持，也是个得道的女仙，却是家门严谨，内无一尺之童，焉得有雷公嘴的男子央来？这想是那里来的妖怪，或者假绰名声，至此访我。等我出去看看。」

好魔王，拽開步，出了書房，上大廳取了披掛，結束了。What a Demon King — striding out, he left the study, went to the main hall, took up his armor, and got himself dressed and equipped.拿了一條混鐵棍，出門高叫道：「是誰人在我這裡無狀？」行者在傍，見他那模樣，與五百年前又大不同。He picked up an iron rod, went out the door, and called loudly, "Who is it behaving so outrageously here at my place?" Xingzhe, standing nearby, saw that his appearance was quite different from five hundred years before.只見：Behold:

好魔王，拽开步，出了书房，上大厅取了披挂，结束了。拿了一条混铁棍，出门高叫道：「是谁人在我这里无状？」行者在傍，见他那模样，与五百年前又大不同。只见：

這大聖整衣上前，深深的唱個大喏道：「長兄，還認得小弟麼？」牛王答禮道：「你是齊天大聖孫悟空麼？」大聖道：「正是，正是。The Great Sage straightened his clothes, stepped forward, and made a deep bow of greeting, saying, "Elder brother, do you still recognize your little brother?" The Bull King returned the courtesy and said, "Are you the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, Sun Wukong?" The Great Sage said, "Indeed I am, indeed I am.一向久別未拜。It has been a long time since we parted, and I have not paid you a visit.適才到此問一女子，方得見兄。I only just now arrived here and asked a woman the way, and so managed to see you, elder brother.丰采果勝常，可賀也。」牛王喝道：「且休巧舌。Your bearing is truly finer than ever — congratulations are in order." The Bull King snapped, "Enough of your glib tongue.我聞你鬧了天宮，被佛祖降壓在五行山下，近解脫天災，保護唐僧西天見佛求經，怎麼在號山枯松澗火雲洞把我小兒牛聖嬰害了？I have heard that after you wreaked havoc in Heaven, you were subdued by the Buddha and pinned beneath Five Elements Mountain, and that recently, freed from that heavenly punishment, you have been escorting Tang Seng west to see the Buddha and seek the scriptures — so how is it that at Withered Pine Ravine's Fiery Cloud Cave on Mount Hao you harmed my son, Niu Shengying?正在這裡惱你，你卻怎麼又來尋我？」大聖作禮道：「長兄勿得誤怪小弟。I have been angry at you over this very matter — how is it you dare come seeking me now?" The Great Sage bowed and said, "Elder brother, do not wrongly blame your little brother.當時令郎捉住吾師，要食其肉，小弟近他不得，幸觀音菩薩欲救我師，勸他歸正。At that time your son had captured my master and meant to eat his flesh; I could not get near him, but fortunately Bodhisattva Guanyin, wishing to save my master, persuaded him to return to the right path.現今做了善財童子，比兄長還高，享極樂之門堂，受逍遙之永壽，有何不可，返怪我耶？」牛王罵道：「這個乖嘴的猢猻！He is now the Boy of Great Wisdom, ranking even higher than you, elder brother, enjoying the halls of ultimate bliss and receiving carefree, eternal life — what could possibly be wrong with that, that you should instead blame me?" The Bull King cursed, "You glib-tongued macaque!害子之情，被你說過；As for the matter of harming my son, you have talked your way past it;你才欺我愛妾，打上我門何也？」大聖笑道：「我因拜謁長兄不見，向那女子拜問，不知就是二嫂嫂。but just now you bullied my beloved concubine and came pounding on my door — what do you have to say to that?" The Great Sage said with a smile, "I only asked that woman for directions because I could not find you, elder brother, to pay my respects to you — I did not know she was my second sister-in-law.因他罵了我幾句，是小弟一時粗鹵，驚了嫂嫂。Because she cursed me a few times, your little brother acted rashly for a moment and startled sister-in-law.望長兄寬恕寬恕。」牛王道：「既如此說，我看故舊之情，饒你去罷。」I beg elder brother's forgiveness." The Bull King said, "Since that's how it was, for the sake of our old friendship I will let it pass."

这大圣整衣上前，深深的唱个大喏道：「长兄，还认得小弟么？」牛王答礼道：「你是齐天大圣孙悟空么？」大圣道：「正是，正是。一向久别未拜。适才到此问一女子，方得见兄。丰采果胜常，可贺也。」牛王喝道：「且休巧舌。我闻你闹了天宫，被佛祖降压在五行山下，近解脱天灾，保护唐僧西天见佛求经，怎么在号山枯松涧火云洞把我小儿牛圣婴害了？正在这里恼你，你却怎么又来寻我？」大圣作礼道：「长兄勿得误怪小弟。当时令郎捉住吾师，要食其肉，小弟近他不得，幸观音菩萨欲救我师，劝他归正。现今做了善财童子，比兄长还高，享极乐之门堂，受逍遥之永寿，有何不可，返怪我耶？」牛王骂道：「这个乖嘴的猢狲！害子之情，被你说过；你才欺我爱妾，打上我门何也？」大圣笑道：「我因拜谒长兄不见，向那女子拜问，不知就是二嫂嫂。因他骂了我几句，是小弟一时粗卤，惊了嫂嫂。望长兄宽恕宽恕。」牛王道：「既如此说，我看故旧之情，饶你去罢。」

大聖道：「既蒙寬恩，感謝不盡。The Great Sage said, "Since you have shown me such generous mercy, I am endlessly grateful.但尚有一事奉瀆，萬望周濟周濟。」牛王罵道：「這猢猻不識起倒，饒了你，倒還不走，反來纏我。But there is still one matter I must trouble you with — I beg you most earnestly to help me out." The Bull King cursed, "This macaque doesn't know when to quit — I let you off, and instead of leaving, you come pestering me instead.甚麼周濟周濟？」大聖道：「實不瞞長兄，小弟因保唐僧西進，路阻火焰山，不能前進。What do you mean, 'help you out'?" The Great Sage said, "To be honest with you, elder brother, your little brother, in escorting Tang Seng westward, has been blocked by the Flaming Mountains and cannot proceed.詢問土人，知尊嫂羅剎女有一柄芭蕉扇，欲求一用。Inquiring among the local people, I learned that your honored wife, the Rakshasi, has a plantain-leaf fan, and I wish to borrow its use.昨到舊府奉拜嫂嫂，嫂嫂堅執不借。Yesterday I went to your old home to pay my respects to sister-in-law, but she firmly refused to lend it.是以特求長兄，望兄長開天地之心，同小弟到大嫂處一行，千萬借扇搧滅火焰，保得唐僧過山，即時完璧。」牛王聞言，心如火發，咬響鋼牙罵道：「你說你不無禮，你原來是借扇之故。That is why I have come especially to beg you, elder brother — I hope you will show a heart as broad as heaven and earth, and go with your little brother to elder sister-in-law's place, so that I may by all means borrow the fan to blow out the flames, allow Tang Seng to cross the mountain, and return it to you at once, intact." When the Bull King heard this, his heart burst into flame, and gnashing his steel-hard teeth he cursed, "So you claim you meant no offense — it was all along on account of borrowing the fan.一定先欺我山妻，山妻想是不肯，故來尋我，且又趕我愛妾。You must have first bullied my wife, and since she likely refused, you came seeking me — and on top of that you chased after my beloved concubine.常言道：『朋友妻，不可欺；As the saying goes: 'A friend's wife is not to be trifled with;朋友妾，不可滅。』你既欺我妻又滅我妾，多大無禮？a friend's concubine is not to be humiliated.' You have both bullied my wife and humiliated my concubine — how much more insolent could you be?上來吃我一棍。」大聖道：「哥要說打，弟也不懼。Come and take a blow of my rod!" The Great Sage said, "If elder brother wants to fight, your little brother is not afraid either.但求寶貝，是我真心，萬乞借我使使。」牛王道：「你若三合敵得我，我著山妻借你；But my wish to borrow the treasure is truly sincere — I beg you most earnestly to let me use it." The Bull King said, "If you can withstand three rounds against me, I will have my wife lend it to you;如敵不過，打死你，與我雪恨。」大聖道：「哥說得是。but if you cannot withstand me, I will beat you to death to avenge my grievance." The Great Sage said, "Elder brother speaks fairly.小弟這一向疏懶，不曾與兄相會，不知這幾年武藝比昔日如何，我兄弟們請演演棍看。」這牛王那容分說，掣混鐵棍，劈頭就打；Your little brother has been idle of late and has not had the chance to meet with you, elder brother, so I don't know how your martial skill these past years compares with before — let us brothers try out our rods and see." The Bull King, allowing no further discussion, drew his iron rod and struck straight at his head;這大聖持金箍棒，隨手相迎。the Great Sage raised his golden-hooped rod and met the blow at once.兩個這場好鬥：The two of them fought a splendid battle:

大圣道：「既蒙宽恩，感谢不尽。但尚有一事奉渎，万望周济周济。」牛王骂道：「这猢狲不识起倒，饶了你，倒还不走，反来缠我。甚么周济周济？」大圣道：「实不瞒长兄，小弟因保唐僧西进，路阻火焰山，不能前进。询问土人，知尊嫂罗刹女有一柄芭蕉扇，欲求一用。昨到旧府奉拜嫂嫂，嫂嫂坚执不借。是以特求长兄，望兄长开天地之心，同小弟到大嫂处一行，千万借扇扇灭火焰，保得唐僧过山，即时完璧。」牛王闻言，心如火发，咬响钢牙骂道：「你说你不无礼，你原来是借扇之故。一定先欺我山妻，山妻想是不肯，故来寻我，且又赶我爱妾。常言道：『朋友妻，不可欺；朋友妾，不可灭。』你既欺我妻又灭我妾，多大无礼？上来吃我一棍。」大圣道：「哥要说打，弟也不惧。但求宝贝，是我真心，万乞借我使使。」牛王道：「你若三合敌得我，我著山妻借你；如敌不过，打死你，与我雪恨。」大圣道：「哥说得是。小弟这一向疏懒，不曾与兄相会，不知这几年武艺比昔日如何，我兄弟们请演演棍看。」这牛王那容分说，掣混铁棍，劈头就打；这大圣持金箍棒，随手相迎。两个这场好斗：

這大聖與那牛王鬥經百十回合，不分勝負。The Great Sage and the Bull King fought through over a hundred rounds without either gaining the upper hand.正在難解難分之際，只聽得山峰上有人叫道：「牛爺爺，我大王多多拜上，幸賜早臨，好安座也。」牛王聞說，使混鐵棍支住金箍棒，叫道：「猢猻，你且住了，等我去一個朋友家赴會來者。」言畢，按下雲頭，徑至洞裡，對玉面公主道：「美人，才那雷公嘴的男子乃孫悟空猢猻，被我一頓棍打走了，再不敢來。Just as the fight had reached a deadlock, they suddenly heard someone calling from the mountain peak, "Grandfather Bull, my great king sends his respectful regards, and hopes you will grace us with your early arrival, so that we may seat you properly." Hearing this, the Bull King braced his iron rod against the golden-hooped rod and called out, "Macaque, hold on for now — let me go attend a gathering at a friend's house." With that, he lowered his cloud, went straight into the cave, and said to Princess Yumian, "My beauty, that Thunder-God-mouthed fellow just now was the macaque Sun Wukong; I have driven him off with a sound beating of my rod, and he dare not come again.你放心耍子。Set your mind at ease and go on enjoying yourself.我到一個朋友處吃酒去也。」他才卸了盔甲，穿一領鴉青剪絨襖子，走出門，跨上辟水金睛獸，著小的們看守門庭，半雲半霧，一直向西北方而去。I am off to a friend's place to drink." Only then did he remove his armor, put on a crow-black velvet jacket, walk out the door, and mount his water-repelling golden-eyed beast; leaving the young servants to watch over the gate and courtyard, he went off half in cloud and half in mist, heading straight toward the northwest.

这大圣与那牛王斗经百十回合，不分胜负。正在难解难分之际，只听得山峰上有人叫道：「牛爷爷，我大王多多拜上，幸赐早临，好安座也。」牛王闻说，使混铁棍支住金箍棒，叫道：「猢狲，你且住了，等我去一个朋友家赴会来者。」言毕，按下云头，径至洞里，对玉面公主道：「美人，才那雷公嘴的男子乃孙悟空猢狲，被我一顿棍打走了，再不敢来。你放心耍子。我到一个朋友处吃酒去也。」他才卸了盔甲，穿一领鸦青剪绒袄子，走出门，跨上辟水金睛兽，著小的们看守门庭，半云半雾，一直向西北方而去。

大聖在高峰上看著，心中暗想道：「這老牛不知又結識了甚麼朋友，往那裡去赴會。The Great Sage, watching from the high peak, thought to himself, "Who knows what new friend this old Bull has made now, that he's off to attend a gathering.等老孫跟他走走。」好行者，將身幌一幌，變作一陣清風趕上，隨著同走。Let old Monkey follow along and see." What a Xingzhe — with a shake of his body, he turned into a gust of clear wind, caught up with him, and traveled along together.不多時，到了一座山中，那牛王寂然不見。Before long, they arrived at a certain mountain, where the Bull King suddenly vanished without a trace.大聖聚了原身，入山尋看。The Great Sage resumed his original form and went into the mountain to search and look around.那山中有一面清水深潭，潭邊有一座石碣，碣上有六個大字，乃「亂石山碧波潭」。In that mountain there was a deep pool of clear water, and beside the pool stood a stone tablet, on which were six large characters: "Bibo Pool, Mount Luanshi."大聖暗想道：「老牛斷然下水去了。The Great Sage thought to himself, "The old Bull has certainly gone down into the water.水底之精，若不是蛟精，必是龍精、魚精，或是龜鱉黿鼉之精。Whatever spirit lives at the bottom of this water, if it is not a jiao-dragon spirit, must be a dragon spirit, a fish spirit, or the spirit of some turtle, soft-shelled turtle, or alligator.等老孫也下去水看看。」Let old Monkey go down into the water too and have a look."

大圣在高峰上看著，心中暗想道：「这老牛不知又结识了甚么朋友，往那里去赴会。等老孙跟他走走。」好行者，将身幌一幌，变作一阵清风赶上，随著同走。不多时，到了一座山中，那牛王寂然不见。大圣聚了原身，入山寻看。那山中有一面清水深潭，潭边有一座石碣，碣上有六个大字，乃「乱石山碧波潭」。大圣暗想道：「老牛断然下水去了。水底之精，若不是蛟精，必是龙精、鱼精，或是龟鳖鼋鼍之精。等老孙也下去水看看。」

好大聖，捻著訣，念個咒語，搖身一變，變作一個螃蟹，不大不小的有三十六斤重。What a Great Sage — forming a mudra with his fingers, he recited a spell, gave his body a shake, and transformed into a crab, neither too big nor too small, weighing exactly thirty-six catties.撲的跳在水中，徑沉潭底。With a splash he leapt into the water and sank straight to the bottom of the pool.忽見一座玲瓏剔透的牌樓，樓下拴著那個辟水金睛獸。Suddenly he saw an exquisitely carved memorial archway, beneath which the water-repelling golden-eyed beast was tethered.進牌樓裡面，卻就沒水。Once past the archway, there was no water at all.大聖爬進去，仔細看時，只見那壁廂一派音樂之聲。The Great Sage crawled inside, and looking carefully, he heard a burst of music coming from over on that side.但見：Behold:

好大圣，捻著诀，念个咒语，摇身一变，变作一个螃蟹，不大不小的有三十六斤重。扑的跳在水中，径沉潭底。忽见一座玲珑剔透的牌楼，楼下拴著那个辟水金睛兽。进牌楼里面，却就没水。大圣爬进去，仔细看时，只见那壁厢一派音乐之声。但见：

那上面坐的是牛魔王，左右有三四個蛟精，前面坐著一個老龍精，兩邊乃龍子、龍孫、龍婆、龍女。Seated at the head was Niu Mowang, with three or four jiao-dragon spirits to either side; seated in front was an old dragon spirit, and to both sides were dragon sons, dragon grandsons, dragon matrons, and dragon maidens.

那上面坐的是牛魔王，左右有三四个蛟精，前面坐著一个老龙精，两边乃龙子、龙孙、龙婆、龙女。

正在那裡觥籌交錯之際，孫大聖一直走將上去，被老龍看見，即命：「拿下那個野蟹來。」龍子、龍孫一擁上前，把大聖拿住。Just as the cups and tallies were flying back and forth, the Great Sage Sun walked straight up, and was spotted by the old dragon, who at once ordered, "Seize that wild crab!" The dragon sons and dragon grandsons rushed forward together and seized the Great Sage.大聖忽作人言，叫：「饒命，饒命。」老龍道：「你是那裡來的野蟹？The Great Sage suddenly spoke in human speech, crying, "Spare my life, spare my life!" The old dragon said, "Where does this wild crab come from?怎麼敢上廳堂，在尊客之前，橫行亂走？How dare you come up into the hall and go scuttling about sideways in front of honored guests?快早供來，免汝死罪。」好大聖，假捏虛言，對眾供道：Confess at once, and you may be spared the death penalty." What a Great Sage — fabricating a false story, he made this confession before them all:

正在那里觥筹交错之际，孙大圣一直走将上去，被老龙看见，即命：「拿下那个野蟹来。」龙子、龙孙一拥上前，把大圣拿住。大圣忽作人言，叫：「饶命，饶命。」老龙道：「你是那里来的野蟹？怎么敢上厅堂，在尊客之前，横行乱走？快早供来，免汝死罪。」好大圣，假捏虚言，对众供道：

座上眾精聞言，都拱身對老龍作禮道：「蟹介士初入瑤宮，不知王禮，望尊公饒他去罷。」老龍稱謝了。Hearing this, all the spirits at the table bowed with cupped hands to the old dragon and said, "This crab knight-errant has only just entered your jade palace and does not know the proper etiquette before a king — we beg your lordship to let him go." The old dragon accepted their plea with thanks.眾精即教：「放了那廝，且記打，外面伺候。」大聖應了一聲，往外逃命，徑至牌樓之下。The assembled spirits then ordered, "Release the fellow, but note down a beating owed him, and let him wait outside." The Great Sage answered with a word of assent and fled for his life outside, going straight to beneath the archway.心中暗想道：「這牛王在此貪杯，那裡等得他散？He thought to himself, "This Bull King is here indulging in drink — how could I wait for the party to break up?就是散了，也不肯借扇與我。And even once it does break up, he still won't be willing to lend me the fan.不如偷了他的金睛獸，變做牛魔王，去哄那羅剎女，騙他扇子，送我師父過山為妙。」Better to steal his golden-eyed beast, transform myself into Niu Mowang, go deceive the Rakshasi, trick her out of her fan, and get my master across the mountain — that would be best."

座上众精闻言，都拱身对老龙作礼道：「蟹介士初入瑶宫，不知王礼，望尊公饶他去罢。」老龙称谢了。众精即教：「放了那厮，且记打，外面伺候。」大圣应了一声，往外逃命，径至牌楼之下。心中暗想道：「这牛王在此贪杯，那里等得他散？就是散了，也不肯借扇与我。不如偷了他的金睛兽，变做牛魔王，去哄那罗刹女，骗他扇子，送我师父过山为妙。」

好大聖，即現本像，將金睛獸解了韁繩，撲一把，跨上雕鞍，徑直騎出水底。What a Great Sage — he at once resumed his true form, untied the golden-eyed beast's reins, sprang up in one leap onto the carved saddle, and rode straight out from the bottom of the water.到於潭外，將身變作牛王模樣。Once outside the pool, he transformed his body into the likeness of the Bull King.打著獸，縱著雲，不多時，已至翠雲山芭蕉洞口。Urging on the beast and riding upon the clouds, in no time at all he had arrived at the entrance of Bajiao Cave on Mount Cuiyun.叫聲：「開門。」那洞門裡有兩個女童，聞得聲音開了門，看見是牛魔王嘴臉，即入報：「奶奶，爺爺來家了。」那羅剎聽言，忙整雲鬟，急移蓮步，出門迎接。He called out, "Open the door!" Inside the cave gate were two young maidservants, who, hearing the voice, opened the door; seeing the face of Niu Mowang, they at once went in to report, "My lady, the master has come home." Hearing this, the Rakshasi hastily arranged her cloud-like tresses, hurried her lotus steps, and came out the door to welcome him.這大聖下雕鞍，牽進金睛獸；The Great Sage dismounted from the carved saddle and led the golden-eyed beast inside;弄大膽，誆騙女佳人。Boldly, he set out to deceive the fair lady.羅剎女肉眼，認他不出，即攜手而入，著丫鬟設座看茶。With her mortal eyes, Luocha could not recognize him, and taking his hand she led him inside, telling the maidservants to set out a seat and serve tea.一家子見是主公，無不敬謹。Seeing that it was their master, the whole household was respectful and attentive.

好大圣，即现本像，将金睛兽解了缰绳，扑一把，跨上雕鞍，径直骑出水底。到于潭外，将身变作牛王模样。打著兽，纵著云，不多时，已至翠云山芭蕉洞口。叫声：「开门。」那洞门里有两个女童，闻得声音开了门，看见是牛魔王嘴脸，即入报：「奶奶，爷爷来家了。」那罗刹听言，忙整云鬟，急移莲步，出门迎接。这大圣下雕鞍，牵进金睛兽；弄大胆，诓骗女佳人。罗刹女肉眼，认他不出，即携手而入，著丫鬟设座看茶。一家子见是主公，无不敬谨。

須臾間敘及寒溫，「牛王」道：「夫人久闊。」羅剎道：「大王萬福。」又云：「大王寵幸新婚，拋撇奴家，今日是那陣風兒吹你來的？』大聖笑道：「非敢拋撇，只因玉面公主招後，家事繁冗，朋友多顧，是以稽留在外，卻也又治得一個家當了。」又道：「近聞悟空那廝保唐僧，將近火焰山界，恐他來問你借扇子。In a moment they had exchanged pleasantries of how they had fared; "Niu Wang" said, "It has been long since I saw you, wife." Luocha said, "Ten thousand blessings to you, Great King." She went on, "Great King, doting on your new bride, you have cast me aside — what wind blows you here today?" The Great Sage laughed and said, "I would not dare cast you aside; it is only that since Yumian Gongzhu took me in, household affairs have been many and friends often call on me, so I have been detained abroad — though I have also managed to build up another household." He added, "I have recently heard that that wretch Wukong is escorting Tang Seng, and is nearing the borders of Huoyan Mountain; I fear he may come to ask you to lend him the fan.我恨那廝害子之仇未報，但來時，可差人報我，等我拿他，分屍萬段，以雪我夫妻之恨。」羅剎聞言，滴淚告道：「大王，常言說：『男兒無婦財無主，女子無夫身無主。』我的性命，險些兒被這猢猻害了。」大聖聽得，故意發怒，罵道：「那潑猴幾時過去了？」羅剎道：「還未去。I hate that I have not yet avenged our son's death at his hands; if he comes, you may send someone to inform me, and I will seize him and hack him into ten thousand pieces, to avenge the hatred of us as husband and wife." Hearing this, Luocha shed tears and said, "Great King, as the saying goes: 'A man without a wife has no one to manage his wealth; a woman without a husband has no one to be mistress of her body.' My life was almost destroyed by that macaque." Hearing this, the Great Sage feigned anger and cursed, "When did that vile monkey pass through here?" Luocha said, "He has not gone yet.昨日到我這裡借扇子，我因他害孩兒之故，披掛了，掄寶劍出門，就砍那猢猻。Yesterday he came here to borrow the fan; because of his having caused our child's death, I put on my armor, wielded my precious sword, went out the door, and struck at the macaque.他忍著疼，叫我做嫂嫂，說大王曾與他結義。」大聖道：「是五百年前曾拜為七弟兄。」羅剎道：「被我罵也不敢回言，砍也不敢動手。Enduring the pain, he called me 'sister-in-law,' saying that the Great King had once sworn brotherhood with him." The Great Sage said, "Yes, five hundred years ago we bowed as seven sworn brothers." Luocha said, "When I cursed him he dared not answer back, and when I struck at him he dared not raise a hand.後被我一扇子搧去。Afterward I fanned him away with a single stroke of the fan.不知在那裡尋得個定風法兒，今早又在門外叫喚。I don't know where he found some wind-fixing charm, but this morning he was again shouting outside the gate.是我又使扇搧，莫想得動。So I fanned him again, but there was no moving him at all.急掄劍砍時，他就不讓我了。When I hurriedly wielded my sword to strike him, he no longer yielded to me.我怕他棒重，就走入洞裡，緊關上門。Fearing the weight of his cudgel, I ran back into the cave and shut the door tight.不知他又從何處，鑽在我肚腹之內，險被他害了性命。I don't know from where he then bored his way into my belly; I was nearly killed by him.是我叫他幾聲叔叔，將扇與他去也。」So I called him 'uncle' several times and gave him the fan, and he left."

须臾间叙及寒温，「牛王」道：「夫人久阔。」罗刹道：「大王万福。」又云：「大王宠幸新婚，抛撇奴家，今日是那阵风儿吹你来的？』大圣笑道：「非敢抛撇，只因玉面公主招后，家事繁冗，朋友多顾，是以稽留在外，却也又治得一个家当了。」又道：「近闻悟空那厮保唐僧，将近火焰山界，恐他来问你借扇子。我恨那厮害子之仇未报，但来时，可差人报我，等我拿他，分尸万段，以雪我夫妻之恨。」罗刹闻言，滴泪告道：「大王，常言说：『男儿无妇财无主，女子无夫身无主。』我的性命，险些儿被这猢狲害了。」大圣听得，故意发怒，骂道：「那泼猴几时过去了？」罗刹道：「还未去。昨日到我这里借扇子，我因他害孩儿之故，披挂了，抡宝剑出门，就砍那猢狲。他忍著疼，叫我做嫂嫂，说大王曾与他结义。」大圣道：「是五百年前曾拜为七弟兄。」罗刹道：「被我骂也不敢回言，砍也不敢动手。后被我一扇子扇去。不知在那里寻得个定风法儿，今早又在门外叫唤。是我又使扇扇，莫想得动。急抡剑砍时，他就不让我了。我怕他棒重，就走入洞里，紧关上门。不知他又从何处，钻在我肚腹之内，险被他害了性命。是我叫他几声叔叔，将扇与他去也。」

大聖又假意搥胸道：「可惜，可惜。The Great Sage again feigned beating his breast, saying, "A pity, a pity!夫人錯了，怎麼就把這寶貝與那猢猻？Wife, you were wrong — how could you give that treasure to the macaque?惱殺我也。」羅剎笑道：「大王息怒。It infuriates me to death!" Luocha laughed and said, "Great King, calm your anger.與他的是假扇，但哄他去了。」大聖問：「真扇在於何處？」羅剎道：「放心，放心，我收著哩。」叫丫鬟整酒接風賀喜。What I gave him was a fake fan; I only fooled him into leaving." The Great Sage asked, "Where is the real fan?" Luocha said, "Rest easy, rest easy — I have it put away safely." She called the maidservants to prepare wine to welcome him home and celebrate.遂擎杯奉上道：「大王，燕爾新婚，千萬莫忘結髮，且吃一杯鄉中之水。」大聖不敢不接，只得笑吟吟，舉觴在手道：「夫人先飲。Then, raising a cup, she offered it up, saying, "Great King, in the joy of your new marriage, be sure never to forget the wife of your youth — do drink a cup of water from home." The Great Sage dared not refuse it, and could only smile and, holding the goblet in hand, say, "Wife, drink first.我因圖治外產，久別夫人，早晚蒙護守家門，權為酬謝。」羅剎復接杯斟起，遞與大王道：「自古道：『妻者，齊也。』夫乃養身之父，謝甚麼？」他兩人謙謙講講，方才坐下巡酒。Because I have been managing property abroad, I have long been parted from you, wife; morning and night you have guarded our home for me — let this serve as my thanks." Luocha again took the cup, filled it, and handed it to the Great King, saying, "As the old saying goes, 'A wife is one's equal.' My husband is the father who sustains my life — what is there to thank?" The two of them exchanged such courtesies back and forth before finally sitting down to take their turns at the wine.大聖不敢破葷，只吃幾個果子，與他言言語語。The Great Sage dared not indulge in meat or wine, and ate only a few pieces of fruit, exchanging words with her now and then.

大圣又假意搥胸道：「可惜，可惜。夫人错了，怎么就把这宝贝与那猢狲？恼杀我也。」罗刹笑道：「大王息怒。与他的是假扇，但哄他去了。」大圣问：「真扇在于何处？」罗刹道：「放心，放心，我收著哩。」叫丫鬟整酒接风贺喜。遂擎杯奉上道：「大王，燕尔新婚，千万莫忘结发，且吃一杯乡中之水。」大圣不敢不接，只得笑吟吟，举觞在手道：「夫人先饮。我因图治外产，久别夫人，早晚蒙护守家门，权为酬谢。」罗刹复接杯斟起，递与大王道：「自古道：『妻者，齐也。』夫乃养身之父，谢甚么？」他两人谦谦讲讲，方才坐下巡酒。大圣不敢破荤，只吃几个果子，与他言言语语。

酒至數巡，羅剎覺有半酣，色情微動，就和孫大聖挨挨擦擦，搭搭拈拈：攜著手，俏語溫存；After several rounds of wine, Luocha felt herself growing half-tipsy, and stirred faintly with desire; she began to press and rub against Sun Dasheng, touching and toying with him: holding his hand, murmuring tender, flirtatious words;並著肩，低聲俯就。shoulder to shoulder, she leaned in close, her voice lowered.將一杯酒，你喝一口，我喝一口，卻又哺果。Taking a single cup of wine, she would drink a sip and he a sip, and then she fed him morsels of fruit besides.大聖假意虛情，相陪相笑，沒奈何，也與他相倚相偎。The Great Sage, feigning affection, accompanied her and laughed along; having no choice, he too leaned and nestled close to her.果然是：Truly it was:

酒至数巡，罗刹觉有半酣，色情微动，就和孙大圣挨挨擦擦，搭搭拈拈：携著手，俏语温存；并著肩，低声俯就。将一杯酒，你喝一口，我喝一口，却又哺果。大圣假意虚情，相陪相笑，没奈何，也与他相倚相偎。果然是：

大聖見他這等酣然，暗自留心，挑鬥道：「夫人，真扇子你收在那裡？Seeing her so far gone in drink, the Great Sage secretly took note, and provoked her, saying, "Wife, where do you keep the real fan?早晚仔細，但恐孫行者變化多端，卻又來騙去。」羅剎笑嘻嘻的，口中吐出，只有一個杏葉兒大小，遞與大聖道：「這個不是寶貝？」大聖接在手中，卻又不信，暗想著：「這些些兒，怎生搧得火滅？Be careful morning and night — I fear Sun Xingzhe has countless transformations, and might come again to cheat it away from you." Luocha, giggling, spat it out of her mouth — a thing no bigger than an apricot leaf — and handed it to the Great Sage, saying, "Isn't this the treasure?" The Great Sage took it in hand, but still did not believe it, thinking secretly, "Such a tiny little thing — how could it possibly fan out the fire?怕又是假的。」羅剎見他看著寶貝沉思，忍不住上前，將粉面搵在行者臉上，叫道：「親親，你收了寶貝吃酒罷，只管出神想甚麼哩？」大聖就趁腳兒蹺，問他一句道：「這般小小之物，如何搧得八百里火焰？」羅剎酒陶真性，無忌憚，就說出方法道：「大王，與你別了二載，你想是晝夜貪歡，被那玉面公主弄傷了神思，怎麼自家的寶貝事情，也都忘了？I'm afraid this is a fake again." Seeing him gazing at the treasure lost in thought, Luocha could not help but come close, pressing her powdered face against Xingzhe's cheek, and called out, "Darling, put away the treasure and have some wine — why do you keep staring off into space, lost in thought?" The Great Sage seized the chance and asked her, "Such a tiny little thing — how can it fan out eight hundred li of flame?" Luocha, her true nature loosened by wine and free of all restraint, then told him the method, saying, "Great King, in the two years since we parted, I suppose you've indulged day and night in pleasure and let that Yumian Gongzhu addle your wits — how could you forget even the workings of your own treasure?只將左手大指頭捻著那柄兒上第七縷紅絲，念一聲『��噓啊吸嘻吹呼』，即長一丈二尺長短。You need only pinch the seventh red thread on the handle with the thumb of your left hand, recite the words 'hē xū ā xī xī chuī hū,' and it will at once grow to a length of one zhang two chi.這寶貝變化無窮！This treasure has limitless powers of transformation!那怕他八萬里火焰，可一扇而消也。」Even eighty thousand li of flame need not be feared — one fan of it and the fire is extinguished."

大圣见他这等酣然，暗自留心，挑斗道：「夫人，真扇子你收在那里？早晚仔细，但恐孙行者变化多端，却又来骗去。」罗刹笑嘻嘻的，口中吐出，只有一个杏叶儿大小，递与大圣道：「这个不是宝贝？」大圣接在手中，却又不信，暗想著：「这些些儿，怎生扇得火灭？怕又是假的。」罗刹见他看著宝贝沉思，忍不住上前，将粉面揾在行者脸上，叫道：「亲亲，你收了宝贝吃酒罢，只管出神想甚么哩？」大圣就趁脚儿跷，问他一句道：「这般小小之物，如何扇得八百里火焰？」罗刹酒陶真性，无忌惮，就说出方法道：「大王，与你别了二载，你想是昼夜贪欢，被那玉面公主弄伤了神思，怎么自家的宝贝事情，也都忘了？只将左手大指头捻著那柄儿上第七缕红丝，念一声『𠲛嘘啊吸嘻吹呼』，即长一丈二尺长短。这宝贝变化无穷！那怕他八万里火焰，可一扇而消也。」

大聖聞言，切切記在心上。Hearing this, the Great Sage fixed every word firmly in his mind.卻把扇兒也噙在口裡，把臉抹一抹，現了本像。Then he tucked the fan into his own mouth, wiped his face with his hand, and reverted to his true form.厲聲高叫道：「羅剎女，你看看我可是你親老公？He shouted out sternly, "Luocha, take a good look — am I your dear husband?就把我纏了這許多醜勾當，不羞，不羞。」那女子一見是孫行者，慌得推倒桌席，跌落塵埃，羞愧無比，只叫：「氣殺我也！And yet you carried on with me in so many shameless ways — for shame, for shame!" The moment the woman saw it was Sun Xingzhe, in her panic she overturned the table and fell sprawling to the ground in the dust, overcome with shame, crying out only, "This is enough to kill me with rage!氣殺我也！」It maddens me to death!"

大圣闻言，切切记在心上。却把扇儿也噙在口里，把脸抹一抹，现了本像。厉声高叫道：「罗刹女，你看看我可是你亲老公？就把我缠了这许多丑勾当，不羞，不羞。」那女子一见是孙行者，慌得推倒桌席，跌落尘埃，羞愧无比，只叫：「气杀我也！气杀我也！」

這大聖不管他死活，捽脫手，拽大步，徑出了芭蕉洞。The Great Sage, caring nothing whether she lived or died, wrenched his hand free, strode off in great steps, and went straight out of Bajiao Cave.正是：無心貪美色，得意笑顏回。Truly: with no heart set on lust for beauty, he returned in triumph, a smile upon his face.將身一縱，踏祥雲，跳上高山，將扇子吐出來，演演方法。With a leap of his body he mounted an auspicious cloud, sprang up onto a high mountain, spat the fan out of his mouth, and tried out the method.將左手大指頭捻著那柄上第七縷紅絲，念了一聲「��噓啊吸嘻吹呼」，果然長了有一丈二尺長短。He pinched the seventh red thread on the handle with the thumb of his left hand and recited "hē xū ā xī xī chuī hū" — and indeed it grew to about one zhang two chi in length.拿在手中，仔細看了又看，比前番假的果是不同。Holding it in his hand, he examined it carefully again and again, and it was indeed quite different from the fake one of before.只見祥光晃晃，瑞氣紛紛，上有三十六縷紅絲，穿經度絡，表裡相聯。He saw auspicious light shimmering and radiant vapors swirling about it; on it were thirty-six red threads, running through the warp and weft, joining its surface and inside together.原來行者只討了個長的方法，不曾討他個小的口訣，左右只是那等長短。It turned out that Xingzhe had only learned the method for making it grow, and had not asked for the formula to shrink it, so no matter what he did it remained that same length.沒奈何，只得搴在肩上，找舊路而回，不題。Having no choice, he could only sling it over his shoulder and set off back the way he had come — but no more of that for now.

卻說那牛魔王在碧波潭底與眾精散了筵席，出得門來，不見了辟水金睛獸。Now tell of Niu Mowang, who, having broken up the banquet with the assembled spirits at the bottom of Bibo Pool, came out the door only to find that his Water-Averting Golden-Eyed Beast was gone.老龍王聚眾精問道：「是誰偷放牛爺的金睛獸也？」眾精跪下道：「沒人敢偷。The old Dragon King gathered all the spirits and asked, "Who has stolen and let loose Lord Niu's Golden-Eyed Beast?" The assembled spirits knelt down and said, "No one would dare steal it.我等俱在筵前供酒捧盤，供唱奏樂，更無一人在前。」老龍道：「家樂兒斷乎不敢，可曾有甚生人進來？」龍子、龍孫道：「適才安座之時，有個蟹精到此，那個便是生人。」牛王聞說，頓然省悟道：「不消講了。We were all before the feast pouring wine and carrying trays, singing and playing music — not one of us left the front." The old Dragon King said, "My own household troupe certainly would not dare — was there any stranger who came in?" The dragon sons and grandsons said, "Just now, while we were seating everyone, a crab spirit came here — that was the only stranger." Hearing this, Niu Wang suddenly came to understanding and said, "Say no more.早間賢友著人邀我時，有個孫悟空保唐僧取經，路遇火焰山難過，曾問我求借芭蕉扇。This morning, when my worthy friend sent someone to invite me, there was this Sun Wukong, escorting Tang Seng to fetch the scriptures, who, meeting with the impassable Huoyan Mountain on the road, had come to ask and borrow the plantain-leaf fan from me.我不曾與他，他和我賭鬥一場，未分勝負。I did not give it to him, and he fought a bout with me, with neither of us gaining victory.我卻丟了他，徑赴盛會。I then left him and came straight to this fine gathering.那猴子千般伶俐，萬樣機關，斷乎是那廝變作蟹精，來此打探消息，偷了我獸，去山妻處騙了那一把芭蕉扇兒也。」眾精見說，一個個膽戰心驚，問道：「可是那大鬧天宮的孫悟空麼？」牛王道：「正是。That monkey has a thousand kinds of cleverness and ten thousand kinds of tricks — it must certainly be that he transformed into the crab spirit, came here to spy out the news, stole my beast, and has gone to my mountain wife's place to cheat her out of that plantain fan." Hearing this, the assembled spirits were every one of them struck with fear, and asked, "Could it be that Sun Wukong who once threw Heaven into great turmoil?" Niu Wang said, "The very one.列公若在西天路上，有不是處，切要躲避他些兒。」老龍道：「似這般說，大王的駿騎卻如之何？」牛王笑道：「不妨，不妨。If you gentlemen ever find yourselves in the wrong on the road to the West, you must be sure to keep well clear of him." The old Dragon King said, "If that is so, what then is to be done about the Great King's fine steed?" Niu Wang laughed and said, "No matter, no matter.列公各散，等我趕他去來。」Gentlemen, disperse now, each to your own; let me go after him."

却说那牛魔王在碧波潭底与众精散了筵席，出得门来，不见了辟水金睛兽。老龙王聚众精问道：「是谁偷放牛爷的金睛兽也？」众精跪下道：「没人敢偷。我等俱在筵前供酒捧盘，供唱奏乐，更无一人在前。」老龙道：「家乐儿断乎不敢，可曾有甚生人进来？」龙子、龙孙道：「适才安座之时，有个蟹精到此，那个便是生人。」牛王闻说，顿然省悟道：「不消讲了。早间贤友著人邀我时，有个孙悟空保唐僧取经，路遇火焰山难过，曾问我求借芭蕉扇。我不曾与他，他和我赌斗一场，未分胜负。我却丢了他，径赴盛会。那猴子千般伶俐，万样机关，断乎是那厮变作蟹精，来此打探消息，偷了我兽，去山妻处骗了那一把芭蕉扇儿也。」众精见说，一个个胆战心惊，问道：「可是那大闹天宫的孙悟空么？」牛王道：「正是。列公若在西天路上，有不是处，切要躲避他些儿。」老龙道：「似这般说，大王的骏骑却如之何？」牛王笑道：「不妨，不妨。列公各散，等我赶他去来。」

遂而分開水路，跳出潭底，駕黃雲，徑至翠雲山芭蕉洞。Thereupon he parted the waters, leapt up out of the bottom of the pool, mounted a yellow cloud, and went straight to Bajiao Cave on Cuiyun Mountain.只聽得羅剎女跌腳搥胸，大呼小叫。There he heard only Luocha stamping her feet and beating her breast, crying and shouting.推開門，又見辟水金睛獸拴在下邊。He pushed open the door, and there too he saw the Water-Averting Golden-Eyed Beast tethered below.牛王高叫：「夫人，孫悟空那廂去了？」眾女童看見牛魔，一齊跪下道：「爺爺來了？」羅剎女扯住牛王，磕頭撞腦，口裡罵道：「潑老天殺的！Niu Wang called out loudly, "Wife, which way did Sun Wukong go?" The serving maids, seeing Niu Mo, all knelt down together, saying, "Master has come?" Luocha seized hold of Niu Wang, knocking her head against him again and again, cursing with her mouth, "You vile old wretch, may Heaven strike you dead!怎樣這般不謹慎，著那猢猻偷了金睛獸，變作你的模樣，到此騙我？」牛王切齒道：「猢猻那廂去了？」羅剎搥著胸膛罵道：「那潑猴賺了我的寶貝，現出原身走了。How could you be so careless as to let that macaque steal the Golden-Eyed Beast, transform into your likeness, and come here to deceive me?" Niu Wang gnashed his teeth and said, "Which way did the macaque go?" Luocha, beating her breast, cursed, "That vile monkey cheated me out of my treasure, then showed his true form and fled.氣殺我也！」牛王道：「夫人保重，勿得心焦。It enrages me to death!" Niu Wang said, "Wife, take care of yourself, do not fret.等我趕上猢猻，奪了寶貝，剝了他皮，剉碎他骨，擺出他的心肝，與你出氣。」叫：「拿兵器來。」女童道：「爺爺的兵器不在這裡。」牛王道：「拿你奶奶的兵器來罷。」侍婢將兩把青鋒寶劍捧出。Let me catch up with the macaque, seize back the treasure, flay his skin, grind his bones to bits, and lay out his heart and liver, to vent your anger for you." He called out, "Bring me my weapon." The serving girl said, "Master's weapon is not here." Niu Wang said, "Then bring your mistress's weapons." The attendant maids brought out a pair of precious swords of blue-tempered steel.牛王脫了那赴宴的鴉青絨襖，束一束貼身的小衣，雙手綽劍，走出芭蕉洞，徑奔火焰山上趕來。Niu Wang took off the crow-black velvet robe he had worn to the banquet, cinched tight his close-fitting undergarments, grasped a sword in each hand, walked out of Bajiao Cave, and set off straight in pursuit toward Huoyan Mountain.正是那：Truly it was:
