At the Sacrifice Kingdom the Pagoda's Stolen Treasure Is Sought
第062回Chapter 62
This lyric, to the tune “Immortal by the River,” tells only how Tang Sanzang and his fourfold company, having brought water and fire into harmony, recovered the cool purity of their true nature. They borrowed the precious fan of pure yin, fanned out the scorching flames, and crossed the mountain. Before many days had passed, they had covered all eight hundred li; carefree and at ease, master and disciples continued westward. It was just at the turn from late autumn to early winter, and they saw such sights as these:
After the four travelers had journeyed for a long while, they again drew near a walled city. Tang Seng reined in his horse and called to his disciple, “Wukong, look at those lofty towers and halls over there. What place might that be?” The Pilgrim raised his head and saw that it was a walled city. Indeed, it was a sight of this kind:
The Pilgrim said, “Master, that city is the seat of a king.” Bajie laughed and said, “Every prefecture has its prefectural city, and every county its county town. How can you tell at a glance that this is a royal seat?” The Pilgrim said, “You do not understand: an emperor’s dwelling is naturally different from a prefecture or county town. Look: it has more than a dozen gates on its four sides and a circuit of over a hundred li, with lofty towers and terraces rising amid billowing clouds and mist. If it were not an imperial capital, how could it possess such magnificence?” Shajing said, “Elder Brother has keen eyes and can tell that it is a royal seat, but what is the place called?” The Pilgrim said, “There is neither signboard nor banner; how could I know? We must enter the city and ask before we can find out.”
The elder urged his horse onward and soon reached the gate. He dismounted, crossed the bridge, and entered to have a look. He saw its six avenues and three marketplaces, where goods circulated and wealth changed hands;又見衣冠隆盛,人物豪華。he also saw richly dressed crowds and people of splendid bearing. As they went along, they suddenly saw more than a dozen monks, every one of them wearing a cangue and chains, begging from door to door, their rags truly beyond description. Sanzang sighed, “When the rabbit dies, the fox grieves; creatures mourn the sufferings of their kind.” Then he called, “Wukong, go forward and ask why they are being made to suffer so.” The Pilgrim obeyed and called out, “You monks—what monastery do you belong to? Why are you wearing cangues and chains?” The monks fell to their knees and said, “Grandfathers, we are the wronged monks of the Golden Light Monastery.” The Pilgrim asked, “Where is the Golden Light Monastery?” They replied, “Just around the corner.” The Pilgrim brought them before Tang Seng and asked, “How were you wronged? Tell me.” The monks said, “Grandfathers, we do not know where you have come from, though your faces seem somehow familiar. We dare not explain it here. Please come to our humble monastery, and we shall tell you all our misery.” The elder said, “Very well. Let us go to their monastery and inquire carefully into the cause.”
Together they reached the monastery gate, above which seven golden characters were written horizontally: “Imperially Founded Golden Light Monastery for the Protection of the Realm.” Master and disciples entered and looked about, and this was what they saw:
Sanzang’s heart ached, and he could not keep tears from his eyes. Still bearing their cangues and chains, the monks pushed open the main hall and invited the elder inside to worship the Buddha. The elder entered the hall, offered the incense of his heart, and clicked his teeth three times. Then he went around to the rear and saw another six or seven young monks chained to the veranda pillars of the abbot’s quarters; Sanzang could scarcely bear the sight.
When they reached the abbot’s quarters, all the monks came and kowtowed, asking, “My lords, each of you has an uncommon appearance. Can you be travelers from the Great Tang in the Eastern Land?” The Pilgrim laughed and said, “What gift of foreknowledge do these monks possess? That is precisely where we are from. How did you recognize us?” The monks said, “Grandfathers, what gift of foreknowledge could we possess? We have merely suffered a bitter injustice, with nowhere to clear our names, and day after day we cry out to Heaven and Earth. Perhaps we moved the heavenly gods, for last night every one of us had a dream saying that a holy monk from the Great Tang in the Eastern Land would save our lives and enable this injustice to be redressed. Today, seeing your lordships’ extraordinary appearances, we recognized you.”
When Sanzang heard this, he was delighted and asked, “What place is this? And what injustice have you suffered?” Kneeling, the monks reported, “Grandfather, this city is called the Kingdom of Jisai, a great realm of the Western Regions. In former years, four foreign nations brought tribute: to the south, the Kingdom of Yuetuo;北,高昌國;to the north, the Kingdom of Gaochang;東,西梁國;to the east, the Kingdom of Xiliang;西,本缽國。and to the west, the Kingdom of Benbo. Every year they presented fine jade, bright pearls, beautiful consorts, and swift horses. We never had to raise arms or mount a campaign; they naturally acknowledged us as the superior kingdom.” Sanzang said, “Since they acknowledged you as the superior kingdom, your king must have followed the Way, and his civil and military officials must have been worthy men.” The monks replied, “Grandfather, the civil officials are not worthy, the military officers are not good, and the ruler does not follow the Way. From ancient times, auspicious clouds have enveloped the precious pagoda of our Golden Light Monastery, and blessed vapors have risen high: by night it shed a rosy radiance. People ten thousand li away could see it;晝噴彩氣,四國無不同瞻。by day it breathed out many-colored vapors, which all four nations gazed upon. For this reason they regarded our land as a heavenly realm and divine capital, and the four foreign nations brought tribute. But three years ago, on the first day of the seventh month, at midnight, a rain of blood fell. At daybreak every family was afraid and every household plunged into sorrow. The nobles and ministers memorialized the king, not knowing for what offense Heaven was reproaching us. Daoist priests were summoned to perform rites of offering, and Buddhist monks to recite scriptures, in requital to Heaven and thanksgiving to Earth. But who could have known that the golden precious pagoda of our monastery had been defiled? For the past two years, the foreign kingdoms have ceased to bring tribute. Our king wished to campaign against them, but his ministers remonstrated: they said that the monks of our monastery had stolen the treasure from the pagoda, and that this was why there were no auspicious clouds or blessed vapors and the foreign kingdoms no longer came to court. The benighted ruler made no further investigation. Those corrupt officials seized all of us monks, subjected us to a thousand tortures, and interrogated us in ten thousand ways. There have been three successive groups of monks here: the first two could not endure the torture and died;如今又捉我輩,問罪枷鎖。now they have arrested our group as well, charged us with the crime, and put us in cangues and chains. With your lordship above us, how would we dare betray our consciences and steal the treasure from the pagoda? We earnestly beg you, Grandfathers, to remember that like gathers with like and creatures sort with their own kind; bestow your great mercy and compassion, display your vast spiritual power, and save our lives.”
Hearing this, Sanzang nodded and sighed, “This affair is obscure and difficult to fathom. For one thing, the court has governed badly; for another, you have met with calamity. Since Heaven sent down a rain of blood that defiled the precious pagoda, why did you not submit a memorial to the ruler at the time, instead of allowing yourselves to suffer so?” The monks said, “Grandfather, we are mere mortals; how could we know Heaven’s intent? Even our predecessors could not discern the truth, so what could we have done?” Sanzang asked, “Wukong, what time is it now?” The Pilgrim replied, “Around the hour of the Monkey.” Sanzang said, “I wish to appear before the king and have our travel rescript certified, but until the affair of these monks is made clear, it will be hard to speak of it before him. When I left Chang’an, I made a vow at the Famen Monastery: on my journey west, whenever I met a shrine I would burn incense, whenever I came to a monastery I would worship the Buddha, and whenever I saw a pagoda I would sweep it. Today I have come here and found wronged monks whose troubles all arose from this precious pagoda. Get me a new broom. After I have bathed, I shall go up and sweep it, to see what this defilement is, why the pagoda no longer shines, and whether I can discover the truth. Only then can I properly report the matter to the king and deliver them from their suffering.”
When the cangue-bearing monks heard this, they hurried to the kitchen, fetched a kitchen knife, and handed it to Bajie, saying, “Grandfather, use this knife to break the iron chains binding the young monks to the pillars, and let them prepare a vegetarian meal and hot scented water, so that they may serve your lordship while you eat and bathe. Meanwhile, we shall go into the streets and beg for a new broom for your lordship to sweep the pagoda.” Bajie laughed and said, “What is difficult about opening locks? No knife or ax is needed. Let that shaggy-faced lord of mine do it; he is an old hand at opening locks.” The Pilgrim stepped forward, performed a lock-opening spell, and with one sweep of his hand made all the locks fall away. The young monks all ran into the kitchen, scrubbed the stoves and pots clean, and prepared tea and food. After Sanzang and his disciples had eaten their vegetarian meal, the sky gradually darkened. Presently the cangue-bearing monks returned with two brooms, much to Sanzang’s delight.
While they were still talking, a young monk came with a lamp and invited him to bathe. By then the sky was filled with the radiance of stars and moon, while the watch drums sounded together from the city tower. It was truly a scene of this kind:
When Sanzang had finished bathing, he put on a narrow-sleeved short robe, fastened a ringed sash about his waist, changed into a pair of soft official shoes, and took a new broom in his hand. He said to the monks, “Go to rest, all of you, while I sweep the pagoda.” The Pilgrim said, “The pagoda was defiled by a rain of blood and has long ceased to shine; I fear some evil creature may have taken up residence there. Besides, the night is still and the wind is cold, and you would have no companion. I fear some mishap if you go alone. How would it be if old Sun went up with you?” Sanzang said, “Excellent, excellent.” Each carrying a broom, they first went to the main hall, lit a crystal lamp, burned incense, and bowed before the Buddha, saying, “Your disciple Chen Xuanzang has been sent by the Great Tang in the Eastern Land to visit our Buddha the Tathagata at Ling Shan and obtain the scriptures. Having now reached the Golden Light Monastery in the Kingdom of Jisai, I have heard its monks say that the precious pagoda was defiled and that the king, suspecting them of stealing its treasure, convicted them unjustly, while no one high or low can ascertain the truth. Your disciple shall sweep the pagoda with perfect sincerity. I pray that our Buddha, in his awesome spiritual power, will swiftly reveal the cause of its defilement and spare innocent mortals from wrongful suffering.” After making this prayer, he and the Pilgrim opened the pagoda door and swept upward from the lowest story. The pagoda was truly a sight to behold:
Tang Seng swept one story, then went up to the next. In this way he had swept as far as the seventh story when it was already the second watch. The elder gradually grew weary, and the Pilgrim said, “If you are tired, sit down awhile and let old Sun finish the sweeping for you.” Sanzang asked, “How many stories has this pagoda?” The Pilgrim replied, “There must be thirteen.” Despite his exhaustion, the elder said, “I must sweep them all to fulfill my original vow.” He swept three more stories, but then, with aching waist and painful legs, sat down on the tenth story and said, “Wukong, sweep the remaining three stories clean for me.” Rousing his spirits, the Pilgrim climbed to the eleventh story and, in another instant, reached the twelfth. As he was sweeping, he suddenly heard people talking on the topmost story.行者道:「怪哉!The Pilgrim said, “Strange!怪哉!Very strange! It must be around the third watch already; how can anyone be talking at the top of the pagoda at this hour? It must certainly be some evil creature. Let me go and see.”
Splendid Monkey King! Quietly tucking the broom beneath his arm and gathering up his robe, he slipped out through the front opening and stepped onto a cloud to investigate. There in the heart of the thirteenth story sat two fiends, with a plate of food, a bowl, and a winepot before them, drinking and playing the finger-guessing game. The Pilgrim worked his magic, threw aside the broom, pulled out his gold-banded cudgel, blocked the pagoda door, and shouted, “So, you monsters are the ones who stole the treasure from the pagoda!” The two monsters panicked, sprang to their feet, and flung pot and bowl about in confusion. The Pilgrim held them back with his iron cudgel and said, “If I beat you to death, there will be no one to give evidence.” He merely pressed forward with the staff. The monsters were pinned against the wall and could not struggle free, however they tried. They could only cry, “Spare our lives! Spare our lives! It had nothing to do with us—the one who stole the treasure is elsewhere.” The Pilgrim used a grappling spell, seized one in each hand, and carried them straight down to the tenth story, where he announced, “Master, I have caught the thieves who stole the treasure.” Sanzang had been dozing, but when he suddenly heard this, he was both startled and delighted. “Where did you catch them?” he asked. The Pilgrim dragged the monsters before him and made them kneel, saying, “They were on the pagoda’s top story, drinking wine and playing the finger-guessing game. Old Sun heard the clamor, vaulted onto a cloud, leaped to the top, and barred their way. I used hardly any force, for I feared that one blow might kill them and leave no one to testify; so I captured them gently. Master, you may take their statement and find out what sort of fiends they are and where the stolen treasure is.”
Trembling all over and crying for mercy, the monsters made a full confession: “The two of us were sent to patrol the pagoda by the Dragon King Wansheng of the Emerald Wave Pool at Tumbled-Rock Mountain. He is called Benbo’erba, and I am called Babo’erben;他是鮎魚怪,我是黑魚精。he is a sheatfish monster, and I am a snakehead demon. Our old Dragon King Wansheng had a daughter called Princess Wansheng. The princess has the beauty of flowers and the moon and is more than twice as lovely as any ordinary woman. She took a consort named the Nine-Headed Prince Consort, whose magic powers are immense. Two years ago, he and the Dragon King came here, displayed their mighty magic, sent down a shower of blood that defiled the pagoda, and stole the śarīra, the Buddha-treasure within it. The princess also went to the Great Canopy Heaven and, before the Hall of Numinous Heaven, stole the Queen Mother’s nine-leaf numinous fungus. It is now nourished at the bottom of the pool, where it sheds golden beams and rosy colors and shines by day and night. Lately they heard that a certain Sun Wukong was going west to fetch the scriptures, and that he possessed immense magic powers and made a special business of prying into other people’s wrongdoing. So of late they have often sent us here to patrol and spy, that they might be prepared if Sun Wukong arrived.” Hearing this, the Pilgrim gave a cold chuckle and said, “Those wretched beasts are utterly lawless! No wonder they recently invited the Bull Demon King there to a feast. So they have befriended this gang of vicious demons and devote themselves to evil deeds.”
Before he had finished speaking, Bajie and two or three young monks appeared below, carrying two lanterns as they climbed the pagoda. Bajie said, “Master, instead of going to bed after sweeping the pagoda, what are you talking about up here?” The Pilgrim said, “Brother, you have come at just the right time. The treasure from the pagoda was stolen by old Dragon Wansheng. He sent these two little fiends to patrol the pagoda and spy out news of our arrival, but I caught them just now.” Bajie asked, “What are their names? What kind of monsters are they?” The Pilgrim replied, “They have just confessed: one is called Benbo’erba, and the other Babo’erben;一個是鮎魚怪,一個是黑魚精。」 one is a sheatfish monster, the other a snakehead demon.” Bajie pulled out his rake and made to strike, saying, “Since they are monsters and we have their confession, what are we waiting for if we do not kill them?” The Pilgrim said, “You do not understand. We must keep them alive so they can be produced before the emperor, and so we can use them as guides to find the thieves and recover the treasure.” The fool truly put away his rake, and each of them seized one monster and dragged him down from the pagoda. The monsters kept crying, “Spare our lives!” Bajie said, “We need your sheatfish and snakehead flesh to make some fresh soup for the wronged monks.”
The two or three young monks, overjoyed, carried the lanterns and led the elder down from the pagoda. One ran ahead to report to the other monks, crying, “All is well! All is well! At last we shall see justice done! The grandfathers have caught the monsters who stole the treasure.” The Pilgrim ordered, “Bring iron chains, pierce their shoulder blades, and shackle them here. You keep watch over them while we go to sleep. Tomorrow we shall deal with the matter further.” The monks guarded them closely and let Sanzang and his companions rest.
Before they knew it, day had dawned. The elder said, “Wukong and I shall go to court and have our travel rescript certified.” He at once put on his brocade cassock, donned his Vairocana cap, composed himself with due dignity, and strode forward. The Pilgrim also tightened his tiger-skin kilt, straightened his cotton cassock, took the travel rescript, and went with him. Bajie asked, “Why not take those two demon thieves with you?” The Pilgrim replied, “Once we have made our report, an official warrant will naturally be issued for men to fetch them.” They then proceeded to the palace gate. There was no end to the vermilion-bird and yellow-dragon ornaments, the pure celestial precincts and crimson palace towers. At the Donghua Gate, Sanzang bowed to the chamberlain and said, “May I trouble your lordship to report that this poor monk was sent from the Great Tang in the Eastern Land to fetch scriptures from the Western Heaven. I wish to appear before the king and have my travel rescript certified.” The palace eunuch duly went in to report and, reaching the foot of the steps, memorialized, “Outside are two monks of strange appearance and dress. They say they were sent from the Tang court in the Eastern Land of Southern Jambudvipa to worship the Buddha and seek scriptures in the West, and wish to attend Your Majesty and have their travel rescript certified.”
When the king heard this, he issued an order that they be summoned. The elder immediately led the Pilgrim into court. When the civil and military officials saw the Pilgrim, every one of them was terrified. Some said he was a monkey monk; others, a monk with the beak of the Thunder God. Every one of them shuddered and dared not look long. Before the steps, the elder performed the prostrations, dancing ceremonially and crying, “Long live the King!” The Great Sage stood to one side at an angle, hands folded before him, making no move at all. The elder reported: “This monk, your servant, was sent from the Great Tang kingdom in the Eastern Land of the Southern Continent to worship the Buddha at the Great Thunderclap Monastery in the western land of Tianzhu and obtain the true scriptures. Passing through your honored realm, I dare not proceed without leave; I carry a travel permit and beg that it be inspected before I continue.” The king was delighted to hear this and issued an order summoning the holy monk of the Tang court into the Golden Throne Hall, where an embroidered stool was set out and he was granted a seat. The elder went into the hall alone, first presenting the travel permit in both hands, and only after thanking the king for his favor did he venture to sit.
The king read through the permit, then said with delight, “When your Great Tang emperor fell ill, he was able to choose an eminent monk who, undaunted by the great distance, would worship the Buddha and fetch the scriptures;寡人這裡和尚,專心只是做賊,敗國傾君。」 but the monks here in my kingdom devote themselves solely to thievery, bringing ruin upon the realm and their sovereign.” Sanzang pressed his palms together and asked, “How have they brought ruin upon the realm and its sovereign?” The king said, “My kingdom is a leading state of the Western Regions, and peoples from all four quarters once regularly came to pay tribute, all because within the realm stood a Golden Light Monastery, and within that monastery a golden jeweled pagoda whose radiance soared to Heaven. Recently the thieving monks of that very monastery secretly stole the treasure within it; for three years it has shed no radiance, and during those three years the foreign states have ceased coming to court, which causes me bitter grief.” Sanzang pressed his palms together and smiled. “Your Majesty, as the saying goes, ‘An error of a hair’s breadth may lead one a thousand li astray.’ When this poor monk reached your celestial capital last night, the moment I entered the city gate I saw more than ten monks in cangues and fetters. When I asked what crime they had committed, they said they were the victims of an injustice concerning the Golden Light Monastery. I therefore went to the monastery and investigated closely, and found that the affair had nothing whatever to do with its monks. Last night this poor monk swept the pagoda and has already caught the demon thieves who stole the treasure.” The king rejoiced. “Where are the demon thieves?” Sanzang replied, “They are now chained up by my young disciples in the Golden Light Monastery.”
The king hastily issued a golden warrant: “Let the Embroidered-Uniform Guard hurry to the Golden Light Monastery and bring the demon thieves here, that I may try them myself.” Sanzang reported further, “Your Majesty, even with the Embroidered-Uniform Guard, my young disciple must go with them.” The king asked, “Where is your worthy disciple?” Pointing with his hand, Sanzang said, “He is the one standing beside the jade steps.” At the sight of him the king was greatly startled. “The holy monk has such an elegant bearing; why does his worthy disciple look like that?” Hearing this, Sun the Great Sage cried sternly, “Your Majesty, ‘A man cannot be judged by his looks, nor the sea measured with a pint pot.’ If fine looks are what you prize, how could the demon thieves ever be caught?” Hearing this, the king’s alarm turned to joy. “The holy monk speaks truly. We do not choose men here for their appearance; our highest concern is only that the thieves be caught and the treasure restored to the pagoda.” He then ordered the officer in charge of the royal equipage to prepare a carriage and canopy, and told the Embroidered-Uniform Guard to attend the holy monk properly while he went to fetch the demon thieves. The officer at once prepared a great sedan chair and a yellow parasol, while the Embroidered-Uniform Guard mustered its constables; they bore the Traveler aloft with eight carriers and eight attendants, loudly crying four times for the road to be cleared, and went straight to the Golden Light Monastery. This stirred the whole city, and there was not a soul anywhere who did not come to see the holy monk and the demon thieves.
When Bajie and Sha Seng heard the cries clearing the road, they assumed the king had sent an officer and hurried out to receive him, only to find the Traveler seated in the sedan chair. The Idiot laughed to his face. “Brother, you have found your true station at last!” The Traveler stepped down and took Bajie by the arm. “How have I found my true station?” Bajie said, “With a yellow parasol over you and an eight-man sedan bearing you, is that not the proper dignity of the Monkey King? That is why I say you have found your true station.” The Traveler replied, “Enough of your jokes.” He then unchained the two monsters and took them under guard to see the king. Sha Seng said, “Brother, take your little brother along to share in the honor.” The Traveler replied, “You stay here and guard the baggage and horses.” The monks in cangues and fetters said, “Let all you grandfathers go and receive the imperial favor; leave us here to keep watch.” The Traveler said, “In that case, wait until I have reported to the king, and I shall return to release you.” Bajie seized one demon thief and Sha Seng the other, while Sun the Great Sage resumed his seat in the sedan; with the procession arrayed before them, they escorted the two monsters to the royal court.
In a short while they reached the white jade steps, where they told the king, “The demon thieves have been brought.” The king descended from the Dragon Throne and, together with the Tang monk and all his civil and military officials, looked them over. One monster had bulging cheeks, black armor, a pointed snout, and sharp teeth;一個是滑皮大肚,巨口長鬚。the other had smooth skin, a great belly, an enormous mouth, and long whiskers. Though they had feet and could walk, they had for the most part assumed human form. The king asked, “From what quarter do you thieving monsters come, and what place bred you demons? How many years have you trespassed upon my land, and in what year did you steal my treasure? How many thieves are there in your band, and what are all their names? Confess every detail truthfully.” The two monsters knelt before the throne, blood streaming from their necks, yet they seemed entirely insensible to pain. They confessed: “Three years ago, on the first day of the seventh month, there was a Dragon King of All Saints who led a great many of his kindred to settle southeast of this kingdom, some hundred li from here. The pool is called Emerald Waves, and the mountain is named Jumbled Rocks. He had a beloved daughter of enchanting beauty. He took as his live-in son-in-law a Nine-Headed Prince Consort whose magic powers were unsurpassed. Learning of the rare treasure atop your pagoda, he conspired with the Dragon King to steal it: first they sent down a rain of blood, and afterward they made off with the śarīra. It now shines throughout the Dragon Palace, making even the blackest night as bright as day. The princess exercised her powers in the deepest secrecy and also stole the Queen Mother’s magic lingzhi, which they use in the pool to nurture the treasure. The two of us are not the ringleaders, but merely foot soldiers sent by the Dragon King. We were captured tonight, and everything we have confessed is true.” The king said, “Since you have made your confession, why have you not given your own names?” One monster replied, “I am called Benbo’erba, and he is called Babo’erben. Benbo’erba is a sheatfish monster, and Babo’erben a blackfish spirit.” The king ordered the Embroidered-Uniform Guard to take them securely to prison. He then proclaimed, “Remove the cangues and fetters from all the monks of the Golden Light Monastery and pardon them. Have the Court of Imperial Entertainments prepare a banquet at once in the Qilin Hall, that we may thank the holy monks for capturing the thieves and discuss asking them to seize the ringleaders.”
The Court of Imperial Entertainments immediately prepared two kinds of banquet, one with meat and one vegetarian. The king invited the Tang monk and his three disciples to take their places in the Qilin Hall, then asked, “What is the holy monk’s honored name?” The Tang monk pressed his palms together and replied, “This poor monk’s family name in lay life was Chen, and my religious name is Xuanzang. By my sovereign’s grace I was granted the dynastic surname Tang; my humble appellation is Sanzang.” The king asked further, “What are your worthy disciples called?” Sanzang replied, “My young disciples have no honorific titles. The first is named Sun Wukong, the second Zhu Wuneng, and the third Sha Wujing; these names were given them by Guanyin Bodhisattva of the Southern Sea. After they took this poor monk as their master, I also called Wukong ‘the Traveler,’ Wuneng ‘Bajie,’ and Wujing ‘the Monk.’” When the king had heard this, he invited Sanzang to take the seat of honor; Sun the Traveler sat at the side seat to his left, and Zhu Bajie and Sha Heshang at the side seat to his right. Their fare consisted entirely of vegetarian fruits, vegetables, tea, and rice. At the foremost meat banquet sat the king;下首有百十席葷的,坐了文武多官。at more than a hundred meat banquets below him sat the many civil and military officials. The ministers thanked their sovereign for his favor, while the disciples begged their master’s pardon, and all took their seats. The king offered the first cup; Sanzang dared not drink wine, but each of his three disciples accepted the ceremonial cup that opened the feast. From below came the sound of pipes and strings playing together, for the Imperial Music Office had struck up the music. Just look at Bajie open his eating-throat! He truly gulped like a tiger and gobbled like a wolf, devouring every last fruit, vegetable, and other dish on their table. Presently fresh soup and rice were brought to replace what was gone, and again he ate until not a morsel remained. Whenever the wine servers came around, he refused not a single cup. The banquet continued merrily until after noon before it dispersed.
Sanzang offered thanks for the sumptuous feast. The king detained him, saying, “This banquet was merely a token of our gratitude for the holy monks’ capture of the monsters.” He ordered the Court of Imperial Entertainments, “Quickly lay another banquet in the Jianzhang Palace, and invite the holy monks again so that we may settle upon a plan to capture the ringleaders and restore the treasure to the pagoda.” Sanzang said, “If the thieves are to be caught and the treasure recovered, there is no need to trouble yourself with another feast. Let this poor monk and his disciples take leave of Your Majesty at once and go capture the monsters.” The king would not consent and insisted on inviting them to the Jianzhang Palace, where they ate yet another banquet. Raising his cup, the king asked, “Which of the holy monks will lead the company forth to subdue the demons and capture the monsters?” Sanzang replied, “Let my eldest disciple, Sun Wukong, go.” The Great Sage cupped one fist in the other and accepted the charge. The king asked, “Since Elder Sun is going, how many troops and horses will he require? At what hour will he leave the city?” Unable to contain himself, Bajie shouted, “What need have we of troops and horses? And why should we care about any particular hour? Now, while we are full of wine and food, let me go with Elder Brother, and we shall seize them as soon as we lay hands on them.” Sanzang was delighted. “Bajie, how diligent you have become of late!” The Traveler said, “In that case, let Brother Sha stay to protect Master while the two of us go and return.” The king said, “Since the two elders require no troops or horses, will you need weapons?” Bajie laughed. “We cannot use the weapons of your house; we brothers have our own implements with us.” At this, the king had a great goblet brought to drink the two elders on their way. Sun the Great Sage said, “We shall drink no more. Only have the Embroidered-Uniform Guard bring out the two little demons, and we will take them along as guides to point out the way.” The king issued the order, and they were brought out at once. The two seized the little demons, mounted the wind, and, employing a snatching spell, sped straight toward the southeast.噫!Ah!他那:As for them:

What it’s about
The pilgrims enter the Sacrifice Kingdom and find Buddhist monks shackled and begging in the streets. Three years earlier a shower of blood stained the monastery pagoda and its luminous relic disappeared, after which the king blamed the clergy for theft and subjected them to punishment. Tripitaka refuses comfortable lodging while fellow monks suffer. He sweeps the tower with Wukong at night, treating the desecrated religious space as a practical mystery rather than accepting the court's verdict.
At the pagoda's summit they capture two small demons discussing the stolen treasure. Under questioning, the captives reveal that the Nine-Headed Insect, son-in-law of the dragon ruler of Emerald-Wave Lake, took the relic and that the princess also stole a heavenly fungus from the Queen Mother. Wukong reports the evidence to the king, secures the prisoners' release and sets out with Bajie to recover the objects and clear the monastery's name.
When it was written 背景
This episode turns the familiar demon hunt into an inquiry about institutional blame. An ominous sign and a missing sacred object are enough for royal authority to punish an entire community, while Tripitaka's solidarity begins with sharing their conditions and cleaning their tower. The radiant relic links Buddhist prestige to visible proof, yet patient observation—not radiance—reveals who committed the crime. Learners should track the movement from rumor to testimony: monks, king, tower and captured demons each supply only part of the case. The chapter also introduces a dragon household whose underwater wealth mirrors a court, preparing a recovery mission in which legal vindication matters as much as defeating monsters.
