卻說孫大聖惱惱悶悶，起在空中，欲待回花果山水簾洞，恐本洞小妖見笑，笑我出乎爾反乎爾，不是個大丈夫之器；Let us now tell how the Great Sage Sun, vexed and gloomy, rose into the air, meaning to return to the Water Curtain Cave on Flower-Fruit Mountain, yet fearing that the little demons of that cave would laugh at him — laugh that he had gone forth and then turned back, hardly the mark of a great man;欲待要投奔天宮，又恐天宮內不容久住；he thought of going to throw himself upon Heaven's court, yet feared that the Palace of Heaven would not let him stay long;欲待要投海島，卻又羞見那三島諸仙；he thought of going to the isles of the sea, yet was ashamed to face the various immortals of the Three Islands;欲待要奔龍宮，又不伏氣求告龍王。he thought of hastening to the Dragon Palace, yet could not bring himself to bow and beg favor of the Dragon King.真個是無依無倚。Truly he had nowhere to turn and nothing to lean on.苦自忖量道：「罷罷罷，我還去見我師父，還是正果。」In bitter reckoning he said to himself, "Enough, enough, enough — I had better go back and see my master; that is still the true path to the right fruit."

遂按下雲頭，徑至三藏馬前侍立道：「師父，恕弟子這遭！So he lowered his cloud and went straight to stand waiting before Tang Seng's horse, saying, "Master, forgive your disciple this once!向後再不敢行兇，——受師父教誨。From now on I dare not act violently again — I will accept your teaching.千萬還得我保你西天去也。」唐僧見了，更不答應，兜住馬，即念緊箍兒咒。I beg you, let me still guard you on the journey to the Western Heaven." When Tang Seng saw him, he made no reply at all, but reined in his horse and at once recited the tight-fillet spell.顛來倒去，又念有二十餘遍。Over and over he recited it, more than twenty times in all.把大聖咒倒在地，箍兒陷在肉裡有一寸來深淺，方才住口道：「你不回去，又來纏我怎的？」行者只教：「莫念，莫念。He chanted the Great Sage down to the ground, the fillet sinking a full inch deep into his flesh, before at last he stopped and said, "If you will not go back, why do you keep pestering me?" Xingzhe cried only, "Don't recite it, don't recite it!我是有處過日子的，只怕你無我去不得西天。」三藏發怒道：「你這猢猻殺生害命，連累了我多少，如今實不要你了。I have places enough to make my living; it is only that without me you will not be able to reach the Western Heaven." Tripitaka said angrily, "You wretched macaque, you kill and take life, and how much trouble you have brought upon me — now in truth I want you no more.我去得去不得，不干你事。Whether I can go on or not is none of your concern.快走，快走，遲了些兒，我又念真言，這番決不住口，把你腦漿都勒出來哩。」大聖疼痛難忍，見師父更不回心，沒奈何，只得又駕觔斗雲，起在空中。Be off, be off quickly! If you delay a moment longer I will recite the true words again, and this time I will not stop until your very brains are squeezed out." The Great Sage, unable to bear the pain, and seeing that his master's heart would not soften, had no choice but to mount his somersault cloud once more and rise into the air.忽然省悟道：「這和尚負了我心，我且向普陀崖告訴觀音菩薩去來。」Suddenly he woke to a thought: "This monk has wronged my heart. I will go to Mount Putuo and lay my case before the Bodhisattva Guanyin."

好大聖，撥回觔斗，那消一個時辰，早至南洋大海。The good Great Sage turned his somersault about, and in less than the time it takes to eat a meal he had already reached the South Sea.住下祥光，直至落伽山上，撞入紫竹林中，忽見木叉行者迎面作禮道：「大聖何往？」行者道：「要見菩薩。」木叉即引行者至潮音洞口，又見善財童子作禮道：「大聖何來？」行者道：「有事要告菩薩。」善財聽見一個「告」字，笑道：「好刁嘴猴兒，還像當時我拿住唐僧被你欺哩。He settled his auspicious light and went straight up Mount Lingjia, plunging into the Purple Bamboo Grove, when suddenly he saw Muzha Xingzhe come to meet him with a bow, saying, "Where is the Great Sage bound?" Xingzhe said, "I wish to see the Bodhisattva." Muzha then led Xingzhe to the mouth of Chaoyin Cave, where he also met Sudhana the Page, who bowed and said, "Whence does the Great Sage come?" Xingzhe said, "I have a matter to lay before the Bodhisattva." Hearing the word "lay before" or "accuse," Sudhana laughed and said, "What a sharp-tongued monkey — still just like the time I caught Tang Seng and you bullied me over it.我菩薩是個大慈大悲、大願大乘、救苦救難、無邊無量的聖善菩薩，有甚不是處，你要告他？」行者滿懷悶氣，一聞此言，心中怒發，咄的一聲，把善財童子喝了個倒退，道：「這個背義忘恩的小畜生，著實愚魯！Our Bodhisattva is one of great mercy and great compassion, of great vows and the Great Vehicle, who saves the suffering and rescues the afflicted, boundless and measureless, a holy and virtuous Bodhisattva — what fault could she have, that you should come to accuse her?" Xingzhe, his breast already full of gloom, on hearing these words felt his anger flare up; with a shout he startled Sudhana the Page into stumbling backward, saying, "You ungrateful little beast, truly stupid and dull!你那時節作怪成精，我請菩薩收了你，皈正迦持，如今得這等極樂長生，自在逍遙，與天同壽，還不拜謝老孫，轉倒這般侮慢。In those days you turned into a monster and worked mischief, and I begged the Bodhisattva to subdue you and bring you into the true faith of Buddhism; now that you enjoy such supreme bliss and eternal life, free and at ease, with a life span equal to Heaven's, you still have not thanked old Monkey — instead you insult me like this.我是有事來告求菩薩，卻怎麼說我刁嘴要告菩薩？」善財陪笑道：「還是個急猴子。I have come with a matter to lay before the Bodhisattva, and yet you say I am sharp-tongued and mean to accuse her?" Sudhana said with a smiling apology, "Still such a hot-tempered monkey.我與你作笑耍子，你怎麼就變臉了？」I was only joking with you — why did you change your face over it?"

正講處，只見白鸚哥飛來飛去，知是菩薩呼喚，木叉與善財遂向前引導，至寶蓮臺下。As they spoke, a white parrot came flying back and forth, a sign that the Bodhisattva was summoning them; Muzha and Sudhana at once went ahead to guide him, and they reached the foot of the Precious Lotus Platform.行者望見菩薩，倒身下拜，止不住淚如泉湧，放聲大哭。When Xingzhe caught sight of the Bodhisattva, he threw himself down in worship, and could not hold back tears that gushed like a spring, weeping aloud.菩薩教木叉與善財扶起道：「悟空，有甚傷感之事，明明說來。The Bodhisattva bade Muzha and Sudhana raise him up, saying, "Wukong, what grief troubles you? Speak it out plainly.莫哭，莫哭，我與你救苦消災也。」行者垂淚再拜道：「當年弟子為人，曾受那個氣來？Do not weep, do not weep — I will help you dispel your suffering and remove your calamity." Xingzhe, tears falling, bowed again and said, "In all my life as I am now, what wrong have I ever suffered before this?自蒙菩薩解脫天災，秉教沙門，保護唐僧往西天拜佛求經，我弟子捨身拚命，救解他的魔障，就如老虎口裡奪脆骨，蛟龍背上揭生鱗。Ever since receiving the Bodhisattva's grace in freeing me from Heaven's punishment, and taking up the faith of the gate of Sand under your teaching, I have guarded Tang Seng on his journey to the Western Heaven to worship Buddha and seek the scriptures; I, your disciple, have risked life and limb, rescuing him from demonic troubles, as if snatching brittle bone from a tiger's mouth or peeling living scales from a flood dragon's back.只指望歸真正果，洗孽除邪。I hoped only to return to the true fruit, to wash away sin and cast out evil.怎知那長老背義忘恩，直迷了一片善緣，更不察皂白之苦。」菩薩道：「且說那皂白原因來我聽。」行者即將那打殺草寇前後始終，細陳了一遍。Who could have known that the elder would turn his back on right feeling and forget kindness, utterly beclouding his good affinity with me, without ever inquiring into black and white to see where the hardship lay." The Bodhisattva said, "Tell me first the black and white of the reason." Xingzhe then set forth in full detail, from beginning to end, the matter of his beating the grass bandits to death.卻說唐僧因他打死多人，心生怨恨，不分皂白，遂念緊箍兒咒，趕他幾次。Now it happened that Tang Seng, because Xingzhe had killed so many men, harbored resentment against him, and without distinguishing black from white, recited the tight-fillet spell and drove him away several times.上天無路，入地無門，特來告訴菩薩。With no road up to Heaven and no gate down into the earth, I have come especially to lay this before the Bodhisattva.菩薩道：「唐三藏奉旨投西，一心要秉善為僧，決不輕傷性命。The Bodhisattva said, "Tang Sanzang, obeying the imperial edict to journey west, is single-minded in wishing to hold to goodness as a monk, and would on no account lightly harm life.似你有無量神通，何苦打殺許多草寇？With your boundless divine powers, why should you have needed to beat so many grass bandits to death?草寇雖是不良，到底是個人身，不該打死。Though the grass bandits were no good men, they were after all human in body, and should not have been killed.比那妖禽怪獸、鬼魅精魔不同。They are not the same as monstrous birds, strange beasts, ghosts, or demon spirits.那個打死，是你的功績；To beat those latter to death is your merit;這人身打死，還是你的不仁。but to beat human beings to death is still your want of benevolence.但祛退散，自然救了你師父。If you had only driven them off and scattered them, that alone would naturally have saved your master.據我公論，還是你的不善。」By my fair judgment, this was still an unworthy act on your part."

行者噙淚叩頭道：「縱是弟子不善，也當將功折罪，不該這般逐我。Xingzhe, tears in his eyes, kowtowed and said, "Even if your disciple did an unworthy thing, my merits ought to offset my faults — he should not have driven me away like this.萬望菩薩捨大慈悲，將鬆箍兒咒念念，褪下金箍，交還與你，放我仍往水簾洞逃生去罷。」菩薩笑道：「緊箍兒咒，本是如來傳我的。I earnestly beg the Bodhisattva to show great mercy and recite the loosening-fillet spell, that I may take off this golden band and return it to you, and let me flee back to the Water Curtain Cave to live out my days." The Bodhisattva said, smiling, "The tight-fillet spell was originally handed down to me by the Tathagata.當年差我上東土尋取經人，賜我三件寶貝，乃是錦襴袈裟、九環錫杖、金緊禁三個箍兒。In those days, when he sent me to the Land of the East to seek out the scripture-seeker, he bestowed on me three treasures: the brocade cassock, the nine-ringed monk's staff, and the three fillets — golden, tight, and forbidding.秘授與咒語三篇，卻無甚麼鬆箍兒咒。」行者道：「既如此，我告辭菩薩去也。」菩薩道：「你辭我往那裡去？」行者道：「我上西天，拜告如來，求念鬆箍兒咒去也。」菩薩道：「你且住，我與你看看祥晦如何。」行者道：「不消看，只這樣不祥也夠了。」菩薩道：「我不看你，看唐僧的祥晦。」He secretly taught me three spells to go with them, but there was never any loosening-fillet spell." Xingzhe said, "If that is so, I take my leave of the Bodhisattva." The Bodhisattva said, "Where will you go, taking leave of me?" Xingzhe said, "I will go to the Western Heaven, bow before the Tathagata, and beg him to recite the loosening-fillet spell." The Bodhisattva said, "Wait a moment — let me look into your fortune, good or ill." Xingzhe said, "No need to look — this much misfortune is already enough." The Bodhisattva said, "I am not looking at your fortune, but at Tang Seng's."

好菩薩，端坐蓮臺，運心三界，慧眼遙觀，遍周宇宙，霎時間開口道：「悟空，你那師父頃刻之際，就有傷身之難，不久便來尋你。The good Bodhisattva sat erect upon her lotus throne, turned her mind through the Three Realms, and gazed afar with her wisdom-eye over the whole universe; in a moment she opened her mouth and said, "Wukong, your master is at this very instant in danger of bodily harm, and before long he will come seeking you.你只在此處，待我與唐僧說，教他還同你去取經，了成正果。」孫大聖只得皈依，不敢造次，侍立於寶蓮臺下不題。Stay here for now, and let me speak to Tang Seng, so that he may take you back with him to fetch the scriptures and complete the right fruit." The Great Sage had no choice but to submit, not daring to act rashly, and stood waiting in attendance below the Precious Lotus Platform — but let us leave that there for now.

卻說唐長老自趕回行者，教八戒引馬，沙僧挑擔，連馬四口，奔西走不上五十里遠近，三藏勒馬道：「徒弟，自五更時出了村舍，又被那弼馬溫著了氣惱，這半日饑又饑，渴又渴，那個去化些齋來我吃？」八戒道：「師父且請下馬，等我看可有鄰近的莊村，化齋去也。」三藏聞言，滾下馬來。Now let us tell how Tang the elder, after driving Xingzhe away, had Bajie lead the horse and Sha Seng carry the load, and the four of them together pressed westward; before they had gone fifty li, Sanzang reined in his horse and said, "Disciples, since we left the village at the fifth watch, and were then further vexed and angered by that Handler of Horses, I have grown both hungry and thirsty this whole while — who will go and beg some food for me to eat?" Bajie said, "Master, please dismount first, and let me see if there is any village nearby to beg food from." Sanzang, hearing this, rolled down off the horse.獃子縱起雲頭，半空中仔細觀看，一望盡是山嶺，莫想有個人家。The idiot rose up on a cloud and looked carefully from midair, but all he saw everywhere was mountain ridges, with no hope of finding a household.八戒按下雲來，對三藏道：「卻是沒處化齋，一望之間，全無莊舍。」三藏道：「既無化齋之處，且得些水來解渴也可。」八戒道：「等我去南山澗下取些水來。」沙僧即取缽盂，遞與八戒。Bajie brought his cloud down and said to Sanzang, "There is truly nowhere to beg food — as far as the eye can see, there are no villages or houses at all." Sanzang said, "If there is no place to beg food, then at least fetch some water to quench my thirst." Bajie said, "Let me go fetch some water from the mountain stream to the south." Sha Seng at once took the alms bowl and handed it to Bajie.八戒托著缽盂，駕起雲霧而去。Bajie, holding the bowl, mounted the clouds and mist and departed.那長老坐在路傍，等夠多時，不見回來，可憐口乾舌苦難熬。The elder sat by the roadside, waiting a long while, but saw no sign of his return; pitiful indeed, his mouth dry and tongue parched, hardly able to endure it.有詩為證。There is a poem to bear witness.詩曰：The poem says:

沙僧在傍，見三藏饑渴難忍，八戒又取水不來，只得穩了行囊，拴牢了白馬道：「師父，你自在坐著，等我去催水來。」長老含淚無言，但點頭相答。Sha Seng, standing by, saw that Sanzang could scarcely bear his hunger and thirst, and that Bajie had gone for water without returning; he had no choice but to settle the luggage and tie the white horse fast, saying, "Master, sit here at ease — let me go and hurry up the water." The elder, tears welling, said nothing, but only nodded in reply.沙僧急駕雲光，也向南山而去。Sha Seng hastily mounted his cloud-light and likewise made for the southern mountain.

那師父獨鍊自熬，困苦太甚。The master, left alone, endured and suffered greatly in his solitary distress.正在愴惶之際，忽聽得一聲響亮，諕得長老欠身看處，原來是孫行者跪在路傍，雙手捧著一個磁杯道：「師父，沒有老孫，你連水也不能夠哩。Just as he was in this state of alarm and misery, he suddenly heard a loud noise; startled, the elder rose up to look, and there indeed was Sun Xingzhe, kneeling by the roadside, holding a porcelain cup in both hands, saying, "Master, without old Monkey, you would not even be able to get water.這一杯好涼水，你且吃口水解渴，待我再去化齋。」長老道：「我不吃你的水，立地渴死，我當任命。Here is a fine cup of cool water — drink a mouthful to quench your thirst, and let me go beg food again." The elder said, "I will not drink your water. Though I die of thirst on the spot, I accept it as my fate.不要你了，你去罷。」行者道：「無我你去不得西天也。」三藏道：「去得去不得，不干你事。I want you no more — be off." Xingzhe said, "Without me you cannot reach the Western Heaven." Sanzang said, "Whether I can go or not is none of your concern.潑猢猻，只管來纏我做甚？」那行者變了臉，發怒生嗔，喝罵長老道：「你這個狠心的潑禿！You rascally macaque, why do you keep coming to pester me?" At this Xingzhe's face changed; flaring into rage and fury, he cursed the elder aloud, "You hard-hearted, wretched baldpate!十分賤我。」掄鐵棒，丟了磁杯，望長老脊背上砑了一下。You despise me utterly." He swung his iron rod, flung down the porcelain cup, and struck the elder a blow across the back.那長老昏暈在地，不能言語，被他把兩個青氈包袱提在手中，駕觔斗雲，不知去向。The elder fell to the ground in a swoon, unable to speak, while Xingzhe seized the two blue-felt bundles in his hands, mounted his somersault cloud, and vanished — no one knew where.

卻說八戒托著缽盂，只奔山南坡下，忽見山凹之間有一座草舍人家。Now let us tell how Bajie, holding the alms bowl, made straight for the southern slope of the mountain, when suddenly he saw a thatched cottage nestled in a mountain hollow.原來在先看時，被山高遮住，未曾見得；It happened that when he had looked before, the high mountain had blocked it from view, so he had not seen it;今來到邊前，方知是個人家。only now, coming close to its edge, did he realize there was a household there.獃子暗想道：「我若是這等醜嘴臉，決然怕我，枉勞神思，斷然化不得齋飯。The idiot thought to himself, "If I go with a face as ugly as this, they will surely be afraid of me, and I will waste my effort for nothing — I will certainly get no food this way.須是變好，須是變好。」I must transform into something better, I must transform into something better."

好獃子，捻著訣，念個咒，把身搖了七八搖，變作一個食癆病黃胖和尚，口裡哼哼唧唧的挨近門前，叫道：「施主，廚中有剩飯，路上有饑人。The good idiot formed the finger-spell, recited a charm, and shook his body seven or eight times, transforming himself into a sallow, bloated monk suffering from consumption; he shuffled up to the gate moaning and groaning, and called out, "Benefactor, if there is leftover rice in your kitchen, spare some for a hungry traveler on the road.貧僧是東土來，往西天取經的。This poor monk comes from the Land of the East, journeying to the Western Heaven to fetch scriptures.我師父在路饑渴了，家中有鍋巴冷飯，千萬化些兒救口。」原來那家子男人不在，都去插秧種穀去了。My master is hungry and thirsty on the road; if your household has scorched rice or cold leftovers, I beg you, spare a little to save a mouth." It happened that the men of that household were away, all gone out to transplant rice seedlings and sow grain.只有兩個女人在家，正才煮了午飯，盛起兩盆，卻收拾送下田去，鍋裡還有些飯與鍋巴，未曾盛了。Only two women were at home; they had just finished cooking the noon meal and had filled two basins, which they were preparing to carry down to the fields, but there was still some rice and scorched rice left in the pot that had not yet been served.那女人見他這等病容，卻又說東土往西天去的話，只恐他是病昏了胡說，又怕跌倒，死在門首。When the women saw his sickly face, and heard him speak of coming from the East bound for the West, they feared he might be raving in illness, and were afraid he might collapse and die right at their gate.只得哄哄翕翕，將些剩飯鍋巴，滿滿的與了一缽。They had no choice but to bustle about, gathering up the leftover rice and scorched rice, and filled a bowl for him to the brim.獃子拿轉來，現了本像，徑回舊路。The idiot took it back, resumed his true form, and headed straight back along the old road.

正走間，聽得有人叫「八戒」。As he was walking, he heard someone calling, "Bajie!"八戒擡頭看時，卻是沙僧站在山崖上喊道：「這裡來，這裡來。」及下崖，迎至面前道：「這澗裡好清水不舀，你往那裡去的？」八戒笑道：「我到這裡，見山凹子有個人家，我去化了這一缽乾飯來了。」沙僧道：「飯也用著，只是師父渴得緊了，怎得水去？」八戒道：「要水也容易，你將衣襟來兜著這飯，等我使缽盂去舀水。」Bajie looked up, and there was Sha Seng standing on a mountain ridge, calling out, "Over here, over here!" When he came down off the ridge and met him face to face, he said, "There is fine clear water right in this stream — why didn't you scoop any? Where have you been?" Bajie laughed and said, "When I got here, I saw a household in a mountain hollow, and I went and begged this bowl of dry rice." Sha Seng said, "The rice will be useful too, but Master is terribly thirsty — how are we to get water?" Bajie said, "Getting water is easy enough too — hold the front of your robe to carry this rice, and let me take the bowl to scoop water."

二人歡歡喜喜回至路上，只見三藏面磕地，倒在塵埃；The two of them, happy and glad, turned back toward the road, when suddenly they saw Sanzang lying face down in the dust;白馬撒韁，在路傍長嘶跑跳；the white horse had slipped its reins and was neighing and leaping about by the roadside;行李擔不見蹤影。and the luggage load was nowhere to be seen.慌得八戒跌腳搥胸，大呼小叫道：「不消講，不消講，這還是孫行者趕走的餘黨，來此打殺師父，搶了行李去了。」沙僧道：「且去把馬拴住！」只叫：「怎麼好？Bajie, in a panic, stamped his feet and beat his breast, crying out loudly, "No need to say more, no need to say more — this must be the remaining gang of Sun Xingzhe's followers, driven off before, who came and beat our master to death and made off with the luggage." Sha Seng said, "First let us tie up the horse!" He kept crying, "What shall we do?怎麼好？What shall we do?這誠所謂半途而廢，中道而止也。」叫一聲：「師父。」滿眼拋珠，傷心痛哭。This is truly what is meant by giving up halfway, stopping in the middle of the road." He cried out once, "Master!" and tears poured from his eyes like scattered pearls, weeping in heartbroken grief.八戒道：「兄弟，且休哭。Bajie said, "Brother, do not weep for now.如今事已到此，取經之事，且莫說了。Since things have already come to this, let us say no more of fetching the scriptures.你看著師父的屍靈，等我把馬騎到那個府州縣鄉村店集賣幾兩銀子，買口棺木，把師父埋了，我兩個各尋道路散夥。」You watch over our master's body, and let me ride the horse to some prefecture, county, town, or market, sell it for a few taels of silver, buy a coffin, and bury our master; then the two of us can each go our own way and part company."

沙僧實不忍捨，將唐僧扳轉身體，以臉溫臉，哭一聲：「苦命的師父！」只見那長老口鼻中吐出熱氣，胸前溫暖，連叫：「八戒，你來，師父未傷命哩。」那獃子才近前扶起長老。Sha Seng truly could not bear to abandon him; he turned Tang Seng's body over and pressed his own face against his master's, weeping, "My poor, ill-fated master!" Just then he saw warm breath issuing from the elder's mouth and nose, and warmth still in his chest; he cried out at once, "Bajie, come here — Master is not dead after all!" The idiot then hurried up to raise the elder.甦醒呻吟一會，罵道：「好潑猢猻，打殺我也。」沙僧、八戒問道：「是那個猢猻？」長老不言，只是嘆息。After reviving and groaning a while, the elder cursed, "That wretched macaque, he has beaten me to death!" Sha Seng and Bajie asked, "Which macaque was it?" The elder said nothing, only sighed.卻討水吃了幾口，才說：「徒弟，你們剛去，那悟空更來纏我。He asked for water and drank a few mouthfuls before he could speak: "Disciples, no sooner had you two left than Wukong came again to pester me.是我堅執不收，他遂將我打了一棒，青氈包袱都搶去了。」八戒聽說，咬響口中牙，發起心頭火道：「叵耐這潑猴子！Because I firmly refused to take him back, he struck me with one blow of his rod and carried off both blue-felt bundles." When Bajie heard this, he ground his teeth audibly, and fire rose in his heart: "That hateful, wretched ape!怎敢這般無禮？」教：「沙僧，你伏侍師父，等我到他家討包袱去。」沙僧道：「你且休發怒。How dare he be so unreasonable!" He said, "Sha Seng, you tend to our master, while I go to his home and demand the bundles back." Sha Seng said, "Do not be so quick to anger.我們扶師父到那山凹人家化些熱茶湯，將先化的飯熱熱，調理師父，再去尋他。」Let us first help Master to that household in the mountain hollow, beg some hot tea and reheat the rice we already begged, to nurse our master, and then go seek him out."

八戒依言，把師父扶上馬，拿著缽盂，兜著冷飯，直至那家門首。Bajie followed this advice, helped the master onto the horse, took the bowl holding the cold rice, and went straight to the gate of that house.只見那家止有個老婆子在家，忽見他們，慌忙躲過。There they found only an old woman at home, who, seeing them suddenly appear, hastily hid herself away in fright.沙僧合掌道：「老母親，我等是東土唐朝差往西天去者。Sha Seng pressed his palms together and said, "Venerable mother, we are men sent by the Great Tang of the Land of the East, bound for the Western Heaven.師父有些不快，特拜府上，化口熱茶湯，與他吃飯。」那媽媽道：「適才有個食癆病和尚，說是東土差來的，已化齋去了，又有個甚麼東土的？Our master is somewhat unwell, and we have come especially to beg at your honorable home for some hot tea to go with his food." The old woman said, "Just now there was a monk with a wasting sickness who said he was sent from the East, and he has already gone off with the food he begged — and now here is another claiming to be from the East?我沒人在家，請別處轉轉。」長老聞言，扶著八戒，下馬躬身道：「老婆婆，我弟子有三個徒弟，合意同心，保護我上天竺國大雷音拜佛求經。There is no one else at home; please go elsewhere." The elder, hearing this, leaned on Bajie, dismounted, and bowed with clasped hands, saying, "Old grandmother, I, your disciple, have three followers, of one heart and mind, who guard me on my journey to worship Buddha and seek scriptures at the Great Thunderclap Monastery in the land of India.只因我大徒弟（喚孫悟空）一生兇惡，不遵善道，是我逐回。It is only because my eldest disciple (called Sun Wukong) has all his life been fierce and violent, unwilling to follow the path of goodness, that I sent him away.不期他暗暗走來，著我背上打了一棒，將我行囊衣缽搶去。Unexpectedly he crept back in secret, struck me one blow across the back, and made off with my bundle of robe and bowl.如今要著一個徒弟尋他取討，因在那空路上不是坐處，特來老婆婆府上權安息一時。Now I must send one of my disciples to seek him out and demand it back, but since the open road is no place to rest, I have come especially to your honorable home to beg a moment's rest.待討將行李來就行，決不敢久住。」那媽媽道：「剛才一個食癆病黃胖和尚，他化齋去了，也說是東土往西天去的，怎麼又有一起？」八戒忍不住笑道：「就是我。As soon as we recover the luggage we will be on our way at once, and dare not linger long." The old woman said, "Just now a sallow, bloated monk with a wasting sickness came begging food, and he too said he was going from the East to the West — how is it there is yet another party?" Bajie, unable to hold back his laughter, said, "That was me.因我生得嘴長耳大，恐你家害怕，不肯與齋，故變作那等模樣。Because I was born with a long snout and big ears, I feared your household would be frightened and refuse to give alms, so I transformed into that other appearance.你不信，我兄弟衣兜裡不是你家鍋巴飯？」If you don't believe me, isn't what's in my brother's robe-front the very scorched rice and leftovers from your kitchen?"

那媽媽認得果是他與的飯，遂不拒他，留他們坐了。The old woman, recognizing that it was indeed the rice she had given, no longer refused them, and let them sit down.卻燒了一罐熱茶，遞與沙僧泡飯。She then heated a pot of hot tea and handed it to Sha Seng to steep the rice.沙僧即將冷飯泡了，遞與師父。Sha Seng at once soaked the cold rice in it and handed it to his master.師父吃了幾口，定性多時道：「那個去討行李？」八戒道：「我前年因師父趕他回去，我曾尋他一次，認得他花果山水簾洞。After the master had eaten a few mouthfuls and settled his mind for a while, he said, "Who will go and demand back the luggage?" Bajie said, "The year before last, when Master drove him away, I once went to seek him out myself, and I know the way to his Water Curtain Cave on Flower-Fruit Mountain.等我去，等我去。」長老道：「你去不得。Let me go, let me go." The elder said, "You cannot go.那猢猻原與你不和，你又說話粗魯，或一言兩句之間，有些差池，他就要打你。That macaque has never gotten along with you, and besides your speech is coarse and rough; if but a word or two goes amiss between you, he will strike you.著悟淨去罷。」沙僧應承道：「我去，我去。」長老又吩咐沙僧道：「你到那裡，須看個頭勢。Let Wujing go instead." Sha Seng agreed at once, "I will go, I will go." The elder further instructed Sha Seng, "When you get there, you must first take stock of how things stand.他若肯與你包袱，你就假謝謝拿來；If he is willing to give you the bundles, then thank him with false courtesy and bring them back;若不肯，切莫與他爭競，徑至南海菩薩處，將此情告訴，請菩薩去問他要。」沙僧一一聽從。but if he is not willing, on no account contend with him — go straight instead to the Bodhisattva at the South Sea, tell her the whole matter, and ask the Bodhisattva to go and demand them from him." Sha Seng listened and agreed to every point.向八戒道：「我今尋他去，你千萬莫僝僽，好生供養師父。He said to Bajie, "I am off now to seek him out; whatever you do, do not be careless, and take good care to attend our master.這人家亦不可撒潑，恐他不肯供飯。Also, do not behave rudely toward this household, lest they refuse to provide meals.我去就回。」八戒點頭道：「我理會得。I will go and come straight back." Bajie nodded, saying, "I understand.但你去，討得討不得，趁早回來，不要弄做尖擔擔柴兩頭脫也。」沙僧遂捻了訣，駕起雲光，直奔東勝神洲而去。But whether you succeed or not in getting the bundles, come back promptly — do not end up losing on both ends, like a carrying-pole with a point at each end and firewood at neither." Sha Seng then formed the finger-spell, mounted his cloud-light, and made straight for the Eastern Continent of Superior Body.真個是：Truly it was thus:

那沙僧在半空裡，行經三晝夜，方到了東洋大海，忽聞波浪之聲。Sha Seng traveled through midair for three days and nights before at last reaching the Eastern Ocean, and suddenly he heard the sound of waves.低頭觀看，真個是黑霧漲天陰氣盛，滄溟銜日曉光寒。Looking down, he saw indeed black mist rising to fill the sky, heavy with somber vapor, and the vast sea swallowing the sun in the cold light of dawn.他也無心觀玩，望仙山渡過瀛洲，向東方直抵花果山界。He had no heart to admire the scenery, but crossed over Yingzhou by the fairy mountains, and made straight eastward for the borders of Flower-Fruit Mountain.乘海風，踏水勢，又多時，卻望見高峰排戟，峻壁懸屏。Riding the sea wind and treading the water's force, after a long while he caught sight of tall peaks arrayed like halberds and sheer cliffs hanging like screens.即至峰頭，按雲找路下山，尋水簾洞。On reaching the mountain's peak, he brought down his cloud and searched for the path down the mountain, seeking the Water Curtain Cave.步近前，只聽得那山中無數猴精，滔滔亂嚷。Stepping closer, he heard countless monkey-spirits in the mountain chattering and clamoring in a great uproar.沙僧又近前仔細再看，原來是孫行者高坐石臺之上，雙手扯著一張紙，朗朗的念道：Sha Seng crept closer still and looked carefully — it turned out to be Sun Wukong, seated high upon a stone dais, holding a sheet of paper in both hands and reading aloud in ringing tones:

念了從頭又念。He read it through, and then read it again from the beginning.

沙僧聽得是通關文牒，止不住近前厲聲高叫：「師兄，師父的關文你念他怎的？」那行者聞言，急擡頭，不認得是沙僧，叫：「拿來，拿來。」眾猴一齊圍繞，把沙僧拖拖扯扯，拿近前來，喝道：「你是何人，擅敢近吾仙洞？」沙僧見他變了臉，不肯相認，只得朝上行禮道：「上告師兄：前者實是師父性暴，錯怪了師兄，把師兄咒了幾遍，逐趕回家。Sha Seng, recognizing this as the travel rescript, could not help stepping forward and calling out sharply, "Elder Brother, why are you reading Master's travel rescript?" Hearing this, the Great Sage raised his head hastily, but did not recognize him as Sha Seng, and called out, "Seize him, seize him!" The monkeys all swarmed around at once, dragging and pulling Sha Seng, hauling him forward, and shouted, "Who are you, that you dare approach my immortal cave?" Seeing that his face had changed and that he refused to acknowledge him, Sha Seng had no choice but to bow toward him and say, "I beg to report to you, Elder Brother: the other day it was truly Master's fierce temper that wrongly blamed you, cursing you several times and driving you away to go home.一則弟等未曾勸解，二來又為師父饑渴去尋水化齋。First, we your younger brothers failed to intervene and dissuade him; second, we had gone to fetch water and beg for food because Master was hungry and thirsty.不意師兄好意復來，又怪師父執法不留，遂把師父打倒，昏暈在地。Unexpectedly, when you, Elder Brother, kindly came back, Master again blamed you for insisting on the rule and refusing to keep you, so you struck Master down, and he fell unconscious to the ground.將行李搶去。And you snatched away the baggage.後我等救轉師父，特來拜兄。Afterward, we revived Master, and I have come especially to pay respects to you, Elder Brother.若不恨師父，還念昔日解脫之恩，同小弟將行李回見師父，共上西天，了此正果；If you do not hate Master, and still remember the kindness of your deliverance in days past, then come with me, your younger brother, bringing the baggage back to see Master, and together let us go on to the Western Heaven and fulfill this true fruit of enlightenment;倘怨恨之深，不肯同去，千萬把包袱賜弟，兄在深山，樂桑榆晚景，亦誠兩全其美也。」but if your resentment runs too deep and you refuse to go together, then please, I beg you, bestow the bundle upon me, and you, Elder Brother, may remain in these deep mountains to enjoy your late years in peace — that too would truly be the best of both worlds."

行者聞言，呵呵冷笑道：「賢弟，此論甚不合我意。Hearing this, Wukong gave a cold laugh and said, "Worthy Brother, this argument does not suit my intentions at all.我打唐僧，搶行李，不因我不上西方，亦不因我愛居此地。That I struck Tang Seng and snatched the baggage was not because I refuse to go to the Western Regions, nor because I am fond of dwelling in this place.我今熟讀了牒文，我自己上西方拜佛求經，送上東土，我獨成功，教那南贍部洲人立我為祖，萬代傳名也。」沙僧笑道：「師兄言之欠當。I have now thoroughly studied the rescript, and I mean to go to the Western Regions myself to worship the Buddha and seek the scriptures, and deliver them to the Land of the East — I alone shall achieve this success, and have the people of the Southern Continent set me up as their founding patriarch, my name handed down for ten thousand generations." Sha Seng laughed and said, "Elder Brother, what you say is not quite right.自來沒個孫行者取經之說。There has never, from ancient times, been any talk of a Sun Wukong fetching the scriptures.我佛如來造下三藏真經，原著觀音菩薩向東土尋取經人求經，要我們苦歷千山，詢求諸國，保護那取經人。Our Buddha Tathagata composed the true scriptures of the Tripitaka, and originally instructed the Bodhisattva Guanyin to go to the Land of the East to seek out a scripture-fetcher, requiring us to endure the hardship of a thousand mountains and to inquire through every kingdom, protecting that scripture-fetcher.菩薩曾言：取經人乃如來門生，號曰金蟬長老。The Bodhisattva once said: the scripture-fetcher is a disciple of the Tathagata, styled Elder Golden Cicada.只因他不聽佛祖談經，貶下靈山，轉生東土，教他果正西方，復修大道。Only because he did not listen to the Buddha expounding the scriptures was he banished from Vulture Peak and reborn in the Land of the East, so that he might achieve the true fruit in the Western Regions and once more cultivate the great Way.遇路上該有這般魔障，解脫我等三人，與他做護法。Along the road he was fated to meet with such demonic trials, and it was ordained that we three be delivered to serve as his guardians.兄若不得唐僧去，那個佛祖肯傳經與你？If you, Elder Brother, go without Tang Seng, which Buddha would be willing to transmit the scriptures to you?卻不是空勞一場神思也？」那行者道：「賢弟，你原來懞懂，但知其一，不知其二。Would that not be all your mental labor spent for nothing?" Wukong said, "Worthy Brother, you are truly muddled — you know only the one thing and not the other.諒你說你有唐僧，同我保護，我就沒有唐僧？Do you suppose that just because you say you have a Tang Seng for you to protect, that I therefore have none?我這裡另選個有道的真僧在此，自去取經，老孫獨力扶持，有何不可？I have here separately chosen a true monk of the Way, and shall go myself to fetch the scriptures, with old Sun supporting him single-handedly — what is wrong with that?已選明日大早起身去矣。I have already made the choice, and tomorrow at first light we set out.你不信，待我請來你看。」叫：「小的們，快請老師父出來。」果跑進去，牽出一匹白馬，請出一個唐三藏；If you don't believe me, wait while I invite him out for you to see." He called out, "Little ones, quickly invite the old master out." Sure enough, they ran inside and led out a white horse, and brought out a Tang Sanzang;跟著一個八戒，挑著行李；followed by a Bajie, carrying the baggage on a pole;一個沙僧，拿著錫杖。and a Sha Seng, holding the tin-ringed staff.

這沙僧見了，大怒道：「我老沙行不更名，坐不改姓，那裡又有一個沙和尚？When the real Sha Seng saw this, he flew into a rage and said, "I, old Sha, when I walk I do not change my name, when I sit I do not change my surname — where could there be another Monk Sha?不要無禮，吃我一杖！」好沙僧，雙手舉降妖杖，把一個假沙僧劈頭一下打死，原來這是一個猴精。Don't be so insolent — take a blow from my staff!" — What a Sha Seng! Raising the demon-quelling staff in both hands, he struck the false Sha Seng down dead with one blow to the head, and it turned out to be a monkey spirit.那行者惱了，掄金箍棒，帥眾猴，把沙僧圍了。Wukong, enraged, swung his gold-banded cudgel and led the monkey host to surround Sha Seng.沙僧東沖西撞，打出路口，縱雲霧逃生道：「這潑猴如此憊懶，我告菩薩去來。」那行者見沙僧打死一個猴精，把沙和尚逼得走了，他也不來追趕。Sha Seng charged east and west, fighting his way out to the mouth of the path, then mounted the clouds and mist to flee for his life, saying, "This vile monkey is so shameless — I shall go and report to the Bodhisattva." Seeing that Sha Seng had killed one monkey spirit and had been forced to flee, Wukong did not pursue him.回洞教小的們把打死的妖屍拖在一邊，剝了皮，取肉煎炒，將椰子酒、葡萄酒，同群猴都吃了。He returned to the cave and told the little ones to drag the dead demon's corpse aside, skin it, take the flesh to fry, and, together with coconut wine and grape wine, ate it all with the assembled monkeys.另選一個會變化的妖猴，還變一個沙和尚，從新教導，要上西方不題。He chose another demon monkey skilled in transformation to change once more into a Sha Seng, and instructed him anew for the journey to the Western Regions — but no more of that for now.

沙僧一駕雲離了東海，行經一晝夜，到了南海。Sha Seng mounted the clouds and left the Eastern Sea, and after traveling a full day and night, arrived at the Southern Sea.正行時，早見落伽山不遠。Just as he was traveling on, he soon saw that Mount Luojia was not far off.急至前，低停雲霧觀看，好去處！Hastening forward, he lowered his cloud and mist to look about — what a fine place!果然是：Indeed it was:

沙僧徐步落伽山，玩看仙境。Sha Seng walked slowly across Mount Luojia, gazing at the immortal scenery.只見木叉行者當面相迎道：「沙悟淨，你不保唐僧取經，卻來此何幹？」沙僧作禮畢，道：「有一事特來朝見菩薩，煩為引見引見。」木叉情知是尋行者，更不題起，即先進去對菩薩道：「外有唐僧的小徒弟沙悟淨朝拜。」孫行者在臺下聽見，笑道：「這定是唐僧有難，沙僧來請菩薩的。」菩薩即命木叉門外叫進。Just then he saw Prince Mucha coming to meet him face to face, saying, "Sha Wujing, you are not escorting Tang Seng to fetch the scriptures — what business brings you here instead?" Sha Seng finished making his bow and said, "There is a matter for which I have come especially to pay homage to the Bodhisattva; I trouble you to present me to her." Mucha, well aware that this concerned Wukong, said nothing of it, but went in first and reported to the Bodhisattva, "Outside is Sha Wujing, Tang Seng's junior disciple, come to pay homage." Sun Wukong, listening below the dais, laughed and said, "This must surely be that Tang Seng is in trouble, and Sha Seng has come to invite the Bodhisattva." The Bodhisattva at once ordered Mucha to call him in from outside the gate.這沙僧倒身下拜，拜罷，擡頭正欲告訴前事，忽見孫行者站在傍邊，等不得說話，就掣降妖杖望行者劈臉便打。Sha Seng threw himself down in obeisance, and having finished bowing, raised his head just as he was about to tell of the earlier events, when he suddenly saw Sun Wukong standing to one side; unable to wait to speak, he drew his demon-quelling staff and struck straight at Wukong's face.這行者更不回手，撤身躲過。Wukong did not strike back at all, but withdrew his body and dodged aside.沙僧口裡亂罵道：「我把你個犯十惡造反的潑猴！Sha Seng cursed wildly, "You vile monkey guilty of the Ten Great Sins and open rebellion!你又來影瞞菩薩哩。」菩薩喝道：「悟淨不要動手，有甚事先與我說。」Now you dare come here to deceive the Bodhisattva with false shadows!" The Bodhisattva called out sharply, "Wujing, do not raise your hand — tell me first what has happened."

沙僧收了寶杖，再拜臺下，氣沖沖的對菩薩道：「這猴一路行兇，不可數計。Sha Seng put away his treasured staff, bowed once more below the dais, and, seething with anger, said to the Bodhisattva, "This monkey has committed acts of violence along the road beyond counting.前日在山坡下打殺兩個剪路的強人，師父怪他。The other day, at the foot of a hillside, he beat two highway robbers to death, and Master blamed him for it.不期晚間就宿在賊窩主家裡，又把一夥賊人盡情打死，又血淋淋提一個人頭來與師父看。Unexpectedly, that evening we lodged at the home of the bandits' ringleader, and he killed the whole gang of thieves without restraint, and even carried a blood-dripping human head to show to Master.師父諕得跌下馬來，罵了他幾句，趕他回來。Master was so terrified that he fell off his horse, scolded him a few words, and drove him away to go back home.分別之後，師父饑渴太甚，教八戒去尋水。After the parting, Master grew far too hungry and thirsty, and told Bajie to go and find water.久等不來，又著我去尋他。When he had waited long without Bajie returning, he sent me as well to go look for him.不期孫行者見我二人不在，復回來把師父打一鐵棍，將兩個青氈包袱搶去。Unexpectedly, Sun Wukong, seeing that the two of us were away, came back again and struck Master with an iron cudgel, and snatched away the two blue-felt bundles.我等回來，將師父救醒，特來他水簾洞尋他討包袱，不想他變了臉，不肯認我，將師父關文念了又念。When we came back, we revived Master, and I came especially to his Water Curtain Cave to seek him and demand the bundles back, but I never expected that his face had changed, and he refused to acknowledge me, reading Master's travel rescript over and over again.我問他念了做甚，他說不保唐僧，他要自上西天取經，送上東土，算他的功果，立他為祖，萬古傳揚。I asked him what he was reading it for, and he said he would no longer protect Tang Seng, but would go to the Western Heaven himself to fetch the scriptures and deliver them to the Land of the East, reckoning the merit as his own, so that he might be set up as founding patriarch, his name spread through ten thousand ages.我又說：『沒唐僧，那肯傳經與你？』他說他選了一個有道的真僧。I also said, 'Without Tang Seng, who would be willing to transmit the scriptures to you?' He said he had chosen a true monk of the Way.及請出，果是一匹白馬，一個唐僧，後跟著八戒、沙僧。And when this monk was brought out, it was indeed a white horse and a Tang Seng, followed by a Bajie and a Sha Seng.我道：『我便是沙和尚，那裡又有個沙和尚？』是我趕上前，打了他一寶杖，原來是個猴精。I said, 'I myself am Monk Sha — where could there be another Monk Sha?' And I rushed forward and struck him with my treasured staff, and it turned out to be a monkey spirit.他就帥眾拿我，是我特來告請菩薩。He then led the host to seize me, and so I have come especially to report and to entreat the Bodhisattva.不知他會使觔斗雲，預先到此處。I did not know that he could use the cloud-somersault, and had arrived here ahead of me.又不知他將甚巧語花言，影瞞菩薩也。」菩薩道：「悟淨，不要賴人。Nor did I know what clever and flowery words he might use to deceive the Bodhisattva with shadows." The Bodhisattva said, "Wujing, do not falsely accuse others.悟空到此，今已四日，我更不曾放他回去，他那裡有另請唐僧，自去取經之意？」沙僧道：「見如今水簾洞有一個孫行者，怎敢欺誑？」菩薩道：「既如此，你休發急，教悟空與你同去花果山看看，是真難滅，是假易除，到那裡自見分曉。」Wukong arrived here, and it has now been four days, and I have not once let him go back — how could he possibly harbor any intention of inviting another Tang Seng and going off himself to fetch the scriptures?" Sha Seng said, "Right now at the Water Curtain Cave there is a Sun Wukong — how would I dare deceive you?" The Bodhisattva said, "Since that is so, do not be anxious. Let Wukong go with you to Flower-Fruit Mountain to see for yourselves — if he is the true one, he will be hard to destroy; if he is false, he will be easy to remove. Once there, the matter will resolve itself."

這大聖聞言，即與沙僧辭了菩薩。Hearing this, the Great Sage at once took his leave of the Bodhisattva together with Sha Seng.這一去，到那：On this journey, they went to that place:

畢竟不知如何分辨，且聽下回分解。In the end, it is not yet known how the truth was to be distinguished — listen to the explanation given in the next chapter.

Traveling without Wukong, Tripitaka sends Bajie and Sha Wujing away on errands and is approached by someone who looks exactly like the expelled disciple. When the monk refuses to take him back, the figure strikes Tripitaka unconscious and steals the luggage containing the travel documents. Sha Wujing follows the trail to Flower-Fruit Mountain, where the apparent Wukong has assembled monkey doubles of the whole pilgrimage party and announces a plan to seek the scriptures himself.

Sha Wujing kills the monkey impersonating him but cannot defeat the false Wukong. He goes to Guanyin's sanctuary and finds the real Wukong there, still complaining of his unjust dismissal. The two return together to Flower-Fruit Mountain. Real and counterfeit Monkey Kings fight with identical appearance, voice, staff, memories and transformations, leaving Sha Wujing unable to tell which deserves his help. The dispute must be carried to authorities capable of seeing beyond outward form.

When it was written 背景

The false pilgrim party turns replacement into a disturbing mirror of the scripture mission. Documents and costumes can reproduce its visible structure, but they do not establish legitimate intention. The episode also makes Tripitaka's expulsion immediately consequential: by severing recognition between master and disciple, he creates room for a perfect claimant to occupy Wukong's role. The chapter title's idea of two minds anticipates more than a puzzle about bodies; traditional readings often see the duplicate as externalized conflict within the unruly mind itself. Learners should note that testimony, shared history and magical disguise all fail as identity tests, forcing the case upward through the cosmos.
