第056回Chapter 56
A poem says:
The story tells how Tang Sanzang gritted his teeth and steeled himself, and by staking his life kept his body from harm; gratefully he relied on Wukong and the others to beat the Scorpion Spirit to death and rescue him from the Pipa Cave. The road gave them nothing to speak of, and soon it was already the season of Red Brightness (early summer).
As master and disciples travelled on, enjoying the scenery of the Dragon Boat Festival and letting the Mid-Heaven festival pass idly by, suddenly they saw a high mountain blocking the road once more. The elder reined in his horse, turned his head, and called out, "Wukong, there is a mountain ahead; I fear it may breed monsters again — you must be on guard." Wukong and the others said, "Master, set your mind at ease. We have given ourselves over in faith and sincerity — what monster is there to fear?" Hearing this, the elder was greatly pleased. He whipped the swift horse onward, loosening the reins to let the dragon-steed press ahead. In a moment they had climbed the mountain slope, and raising their heads to look, it was truly thus:
The four of them entered the mountain and travelled slowly for a good while, until they crossed over the mountaintop. Descending the western slope, they came to a stretch of level, sunlit ground. Zhu Bajie, showing off his energy, had Sha Monk carry the load while he himself raised his rake in both hands and went ahead to drive the horse. But the horse was not the least bit afraid of him; no matter how the idiot clucked and prodded, it still only walked along slowly, never hurrying. Wukong said, "Brother, why are you driving it so? Just let it walk slowly, that's all." Bajie said, "The sky is getting dark, and we've walked all day up the mountain — my belly is hungry. Let's all move a bit faster and find some household to beg a meal from." Hearing this, Wukong said, "If that's so, let me make it go quickly." He gave the gold-banded staff a shake and let out a shout, and the horse slipped its reins and shot off like an arrow, straight ahead along the level road.
You may ask why the horse fears not Bajie but only Wukong — why is that? Five hundred years ago Wukong had received a post from the Jade Emperor tending horses in the Heavenly Stable of the Great Luo Heaven, with the official title Bimawen (Protector of the Horses); hence, to this day, all horses fear the monkey.
The elder could not hold back the reins; he could only grip the saddle tightly and let it have its head for a stretch of road, and only after some twenty li, when they reached open farmland, did it slow to a gentle pace.
Just as they were travelling, suddenly they heard a gong sound out, and from both sides of the road more than thirty men sprang out, each brandishing spears, blades, cudgels and staves, blocking the way and shouting, "Monk, where do you think you're going?" This so frightened Tang Seng that he trembled all over, could not sit steady, and fell off the horse, crouching among the roadside grass, crying only, "Great kings, spare my life, spare my life." The two leading brawny men said, "We won't beat you — just leave your travel money behind." Only then did the elder come to his senses, realizing they were a band of bandits, and raising himself up, he lifted his head to look.
Seeing how fierce and vicious they looked, Sanzang had no choice but to rise, press his palms together before his chest, and say, "Great kings, this poor monk is one sent by the Tang emperor of the Eastern Land to fetch scriptures from the Western Heaven. Since parting from Chang'an, so many years have passed that whatever travel money I had is long since spent. One who has left the family relies solely on begging alms — how could I possess wealth or silk? 那兩個賊帥眾向前道:「我們在這裡起一片虎心,截住要路,專要些財帛,甚麼方便方便?I beg you, great kings, to show mercy and let this poor monk pass." The two bandit leaders, with their followers, came forward and said, "Here we've raised a tiger's heart and cut off this vital road expressly to get some wealth — what do you mean, 'show mercy'? If you truly have no wealth, then quickly strip off your clothes and leave the white horse behind, and we'll let you pass." Sanzang said, "Amitabha! This robe of mine was begged cloth from one house and needles from another, pieced together bit by bit from alms. If you strip it from me, would that not be as good as killing me outright? It's only that being a good fellow in this life leads to being reborn a beast in the next." Hearing this, the bandit flew into a rage, seized his great cudgel, and came forward to strike.這長老口內不言,心中暗想道:「可憐!The elder said nothing aloud, but inwardly thought: "How pitiable! You speak only of your own cudgel, and do not yet know of my disciple's cudgel." The bandit gave him no chance to explain further and, raising his staff, struck at him wildly, heedless of head or face. All his life the elder had never known how to lie, but faced with this desperate strait he had no choice but to speak a falsehood: "Great kings, hold your hands a moment. I have a young disciple who will arrive shortly from behind; he carries a few taels of silver on him, and I will give it to you." The bandit said, "This monk clearly can't bear a beating — tie him up first." The whole gang of underlings set upon him at once, bound him with a rope, and hoisted him high up into a tree.
Now the story turns to the three disaster-prone ones who came hurrying up from behind. Bajie laughed heartily and said, "Master went off so fast — who knows where he's waiting for us." Then suddenly he saw the elder up in a tree, and said, "Look at Master — waiting would have been enough, but he had to have this kind of mood, climbing up a tree to grab a vine and swing on it for fun." Seeing this, Wukong said, "Idiot, don't talk nonsense. Isn't Master hanging up there? You two come slowly; let me go and take a look."
Splendid Great Sage — he hurried up a high slope to look closely, and recognizing them as a band of bandits, he secretly rejoiced: "What luck, what luck, business has come to my door." He turned at once, shook himself, and transformed into a clean, tidy little monk, wearing a black robe, only sixteen years of age, with a blue cloth bundle slung over his shoulder. Striding forward, he came up in front and called out, "Master, what is the meaning of this? Who are all these wicked men?" Sanzang said, "Disciple, instead of saving me at once, you ask such questions?" Wukong said, "What business are they up to?" Sanzang said, "This band blocking the road stopped me and demanded toll money. Since I had nothing on me, they hung me up here, waiting only for you to come and settle things. Otherwise, give this horse to them." Hearing this, Wukong laughed and said, "Master, you're hopeless — there may be monks in this world, but few as soft-skinned as you. Tang Taizong sent you to see the Buddha in the Western Heaven — who told you to give away this dragon-horse?" Sanzang said, "Disciple, hung up like this and beaten while they demand it, what else could I do?" Wukong said, "What did you tell them?" Sanzang said, "They beat me so hard I panicked, and had no choice but to give you away." Wukong said, "Master, you're really thoughtless. How could you give me away like that?" Sanzang said, "I told them you had some travel money on you, just to get them to stop beating me — it was a desperate ploy to escape trouble." Wukong said, "Good, good, good, thanks to your recommendation — that's exactly the right kind of offering to make. If you'd only offer me up seventy or eighty times a month, old Monkey would have all the more business."
Seeing Wukong talking with their master, the band of bandits spread out and closed in around him, saying, "Little monk, your master says you have travel money at your waist — hand it over quickly and we'll spare your lives;若道半個『不』字,就都送了你的殘生。」 if you so much as say half a 'no', we'll finish off what's left of your lives right here." Wukong set down his bundle and said, "Gentlemen, officers all, no need to shout. There is some travel money here in the bundle — not much, only about twenty ingots of horse-hoof gold and twenty or thirty ingots of powder-face silver; the loose small change I haven't counted. If you want it, just take the bundle and all — only don't beat my master. An old book says: 'Virtue is the root;財者,末也。』 wealth is the branch.' This is but a trifling matter. We who have left the family always have places to beg alms; if we meet an elder patron who feeds monks, there is incense-money to be had, and clothing too — how much can we possibly use? I only ask that you let my master down, and I will offer everything to you at once." Hearing this, the whole band of bandits were delighted and said, "That old monk is stingy, but this little monk is generous after all." And they ordered, "Let him down." Having secured his life, the elder leapt onto the horse, and without a thought for Wukong, whipped it and galloped straight back the way they had come.
Wukong hastily called out, "You're going the wrong way!" and, carrying the bundle, made to chase after him. But the band of bandits blocked his way, saying, "Where do you think you're going? Leave the travel money behind, and spare yourself a beating." Wukong laughed and said, "Let's settle it plainly — the travel money should be split three ways." The bandit chief said, "This little monk is far too crafty, wanting to hide some away from his own master. Very well then, bring it out and let's see; if there's plenty, we'll give you some to buy fruit with on the sly." Wukong said, "Brother, that's not how it is — where would I have any travel money? I mean that the two of you have robbed others of their gold and silver, and you really ought to share some with me." Hearing this, the bandit flew into a rage and cursed, "This monk doesn't know when he's well off! You won't give to me, but instead you ask me for a share. Don't move — take this beating." He swung a rattan cudgel and struck Wukong on his bald head seven or eight times. Wukong acted as if he felt nothing at all, and said with a face full of smiles, "Brother, if you're going to beat like this, you could beat till next year, past the Beginning of Spring, and it still wouldn't mean anything." The bandit was greatly astonished and said, "This monk has a hard head indeed!" Wukong laughed and said, "Not at all, not at all, I'm flattered by your praise — it's passable, I suppose." The bandit gave him no chance to say more, and two or three of them set upon him together, striking wildly. Wukong said, "Gentlemen, calm your anger — let me bring it out."
Splendid Great Sage — he felt about in his ear and drew out an embroidery needle, saying, "Gentlemen, I who have left the family truly carry no travel money — only this needle, which I'll give you." The bandit said, "Just our luck — we let go the rich monk and caught this poor bald donkey instead. Are you some kind of tailor? What use have I for a needle?" Hearing that he didn't want it, Wukong took it in his hand, gave it a shake, and it turned into a cudgel as thick as a rice bowl. The bandit, alarmed, said, "This monk, small as he looks, actually knows how to work sorcery." Wukong planted the cudgel in the ground and said, "Gentlemen, if you can lift it, I'll give it to you." Two of the bandits stepped forward to seize it, but pitifully, it was like a dragonfly trying to shake a stone pillar — they could not budge it in the least. This cudgel was in truth the Ruyi Gold-Banded Staff, which on the heavenly scale weighed thirteen thousand five hundred catties — how could that band of bandits have known? The Great Sage stepped forward, lifted it up with ease, struck the pose of a python turning its body in a twisting step, and pointed at the bandits, saying, "Your luck has run out — you've met old Monkey." The bandits came forward and struck him another fifty or sixty times.
Wukong laughed and said, "You must be tired of striking by now — let old Monkey give you a stroke or two, though don't take it seriously." Watch him: he stretched out the cudgel with a shake until it was as thick as a well-curb and seven or eight zhang long, and with one swing struck one of them down to the ground, his lips buried in the dirt, never to make another sound. The other one spoke up cursing, "This bald wretch is far too insolent! There was no travel money, yet you go and hurt one of my men." Wukong laughed and said, "Wait a moment, wait a moment — let me strike you down one by one, and finish the job of cutting off the root altogether." With another swing of the cudgel, he struck the second one dead as well. This so terrified the remaining underlings that they threw down their spears and cudgels and fled for their lives in all directions.
Meanwhile Tang Seng, riding his horse, was galloping straight east when Bajie and Sha Seng blocked his way, saying, "Master, where are you going? You've taken the wrong road." The elder reined in the horse and said, "Disciples, hurry and tell your elder brother to spare his hand and not beat those bandits to death." Bajie said, "Master, stay here, and let me go." The idiot ran all the way to the front and called out loudly, "Brother, Master says you're not to beat anyone." Wukong said, "Brother, when did I ever beat anyone?" Bajie said, "Where have the bandits gone?" Wukong said, "The rest have all scattered — only the two leaders are here, sleeping." Bajie laughed and said, "You two unlucky wretches must have stayed up all night and gotten so worn out that, instead of sleeping somewhere else, you chose to sleep right here." The idiot went up close to look, and said, "Why, they're just like me — mouths wide open, sleeping, with drool running out." Wukong said, "That's old Monkey's cudgel that beat bean curd out of them." Bajie said, "Is there bean curd inside a person's head too?" Wukong said, "I beat their brains out."
三藏道:「善哉!Hearing that their brains had been beaten out, Bajie hurried back in alarm and told Tang Seng, "The gang has broken up." Sanzang said, "Mercy! Which road did they take?" Bajie said, "Beaten till their legs went stiff — how could they go anywhere?" Sanzang said, "Then why did you say the gang broke up?" Bajie said, "They were beaten to death — if that's not breaking up the gang, what is?" Sanzang asked, "What did the injuries look like?" Bajie said, "Two great holes were beaten into their heads." Sanzang said, "Open the bundle and take out a few coins for alms — go quickly and find two plasters somewhere, to put on their wounds." Bajie laughed and said, "Master, you're really not thinking straight — plasters are only good for sores and swellings on the living; how could they possibly patch holes in dead men?" Sanzang said, "Truly beaten to death?" And with that he grew angry, muttering on and on without stopping, calling Wukong 'you monkey-head' this and 'you ape' that. Turning his horse around, he went with Sha Seng and Bajie to where the dead men lay, and saw them fallen, bloody, at the foot of the mountain slope.
The elder could not bear the sight, and at once told Bajie, "Quickly use the rake to dig a pit and bury them — I will recite the Sutra for the Newly Dead over them." Bajie said, "Master, you've got the wrong man for this job. Wukong beat them to death — he ought to be the one sent to bury them; why make old Pig do earthwork?" Wukong, angered by his master's scolding, shouted at Bajie, "You lazy, worthless creature! Go and bury them at once, or any delay earns you a taste of the cudgel." The idiot, frightened, dug down some three feet into the slope, but below was all rock and stone, which blunted the teeth of the rake. The idiot threw down the rake and began to root with his snout instead. Rooting down to softer ground, each thrust of the snout went two and a half feet. Two thrusts made five feet deep, and he buried the two bandits' corpses, mounding the earth into a grave. Sanzang called out, "Wukong, fetch incense and candles — let me offer prayers so I may recite the sutra properly." Wukong pouted and said, "How thoughtless can you be — here in the middle of the mountains, with no village ahead and no inn behind, where am I to find incense and candles? Even with money, there'd be nowhere to buy them." Sanzang said resentfully, "Monkey-head, get out of the way, and let me scatter earth and burn incense in prayer myself." And so it was that Sanzang dismounted to mourn at a wild grave, the holy monk uttering kindly prayers over a desolate tomb. The prayer said:
Bajie laughed and said, "Master is washing his own hands clean of it. When they were beaten, the two of us had nothing to do with it either." And indeed Sanzang scattered earth again and prayed further, saying, "Good fellows, if you bring a complaint, bring it only against Wukong — it has nothing to do with Bajie or Sha Seng."
Hearing this, the Great Sage could not help laughing and said, "Master, you, old man, are far too unfeeling. For your sake, in fetching the scriptures, I have spent no end of diligent toil, and now that I've beaten these two petty bandits to death, you instead tell them to go and accuse old Monkey. Though it was my hand that struck the blow, it was done for your sake alone. If you were not going to the Western Heaven for the scriptures, I would not be your disciple — how else would I have come here, and how would I have come to kill anyone? I might as well pray over them myself, then." Gripping his iron cudgel, he pounded it three times upon the grave and said, "You unlucky bandits, listen well: you struck me seven or eight blows in front, and seven or eight more behind, beating me without my feeling the least pain or itch, and it roused my temper, so that in one moment's mistake, I struck you dead. Go and lodge your complaint wherever you please — old Monkey truly fears nothing: the Jade Emperor knows me well, the Heavenly Kings follow my lead;二十八宿懼我,九曜星官怕我;the Twenty-Eight Constellations fear me, the Nine Luminaries dread me;府縣城隍跪我,東岳天齊怖我;the City Gods of every prefecture and county kneel to me, the God of Mount Tai is terrified of me;十代閻君曾與我為僕從,五路猖神曾與我當後生。the Ten Kings of the Underworld have all served as my attendants, and the Five Roads' Fierce Spirits have all been my juniors. No matter which of the Three Realms or Five Offices, or which ruler in any of the ten directions, all are on the closest terms with me — go complain wherever you like." Hearing him speak such fierce words, Sanzang grew alarmed and said, "Disciple, my prayer was meant to teach you to cherish the virtue of preserving life and to be a good and kindly man — how could you take it so seriously?" Wukong said, "Master, this is no matter for jesting. Let's hurry and find lodging for the night instead." The elder had no choice but to mount his horse, harboring resentment in his heart.
The Great Sage bore ill will in his heart, and Bajie and Sha Seng likewise felt some jealousy; master and disciples all wore friendly faces while inwardly at odds. Following the main road west, they suddenly saw, north of the road, a manor house. Sanzang pointed with his whip and said, "Let's go there and ask for lodging." Bajie said, "Just so." So they went up to the farmstead and dismounted. Looking it over, it was indeed a fine dwelling place.

As the elder went forward, suddenly an old man came walking out from the gate of the village house; Sanzang went to meet him and offered a greeting. The old man asked, "Where does the reverend monk come from?" Sanzang said, "This poor monk is an envoy from the Great Tang of the Eastern Land, sent to seek scriptures in the Western Heaven. Passing by your esteemed region, and with the sky growing dark, I have come especially to your worthy household to beg a night's lodging." The old man laughed and said, "From your noble land to here is a long and distant journey — how did you manage to cross rivers and climb mountains and arrive here alone?" Sanzang said, "This poor monk also has three disciples travelling with him." The old man asked, "Where are your worthy disciples?" Sanzang pointed with his hand and said, "Those standing by the main road there." The old man suddenly raised his head, and seeing how hideous and ugly their faces were, he hastily turned and made to go back inside. Sanzang caught hold of him and said, "Venerable benefactor, I beg you, out of the greatest compassion, grant us a night's lodging!" The old man, trembling, could barely speak, shaking his head and waving his hands, saying, "No, no, no, no — they don't look human at all! They, they, they must be some kind of monster spirits." Sanzang said with a placating smile, "Benefactor, please do not be afraid. My disciples were simply born with such looks — they are not monsters." The old man said, "Oh, heavens! One is a yaksha, one has a horse face, and one is a Thunder God." Hearing this, Wukong called out loudly, "The Thunder God is my grandson, the yaksha is my great-grandson, and the horse-face is my great-great-grandson." Hearing this, the old man's soul scattered and his spirit fled, his face draining of color, and he wanted only to go back inside. Sanzang held him back, and together they went to the thatched hall, where he said with a smile, "Venerable benefactor, do not be afraid of them — they are all simply coarse and rough by nature, and do not know how to speak properly."
Just as he was smoothing things over, an old woman came out from the back, leading a small child of five or six, and said, "Old man, why are you so frightened?" Only then did the old man call out, "Old woman, bring tea." The old woman promptly set the child down, went inside, and brought out two cups of tea. When the tea was finished, Sanzang came down and, bowing to the old woman, said, "This poor monk is sent by the Great Tang of the Eastern Land to fetch scriptures in the Western Heaven. Having just arrived in your esteemed region, I beg to lodge a night at your worthy home; it is only that my three disciples are ugly in appearance, and the old master of the house was startled at the sight of them." The old woman said, "If merely ugly faces gave such a fright, then what would happen at the sight of tigers and wolves?" The old man said, "Old woman, ugly faces are bearable enough, but it was their speech that was even more frightening. I said they looked like a yaksha, a horse-face, and a Thunder God, and he shouted back that the Thunder God was his grandson, the yaksha his great-grandson, and the horse-face his great-great-grandson. Hearing this, I was naturally terrified." Tang Seng said, "No, no, that's not it. The one who looks like the Thunder God is my eldest disciple, Sun Wukong;像馬面的,是我二徒豬悟能;the one who looks like the horse-face is my second disciple, Zhu Wuneng;像夜叉的,是我三徒沙悟淨。the one who looks like the yaksha is my third disciple, Sha Wujing.他們雖是醜陋,卻也秉教沙門,皈依善果,不是甚麼惡魔毒怪,怕他怎麼?」Though they are ugly in appearance, they too uphold the teachings of the Buddhist order and have taken refuge in good fruits — they are no evil demons or vicious monsters, so why fear them?
When the old couple heard their names and titles and the words about taking refuge in the true faith of Buddhism, they at last calmed their startled hearts and said, "Please invite them in, please invite them in." The elder went out the door to call them, and further instructed, "Just now this old man was quite alarmed by your appearance; when you go in to meet him, be sure not to act rudely — each of you show proper respect." Bajie said, "I am handsome and refined, not coarse and unruly like my elder brother." Wukong laughed and said, "It's not as if a long snout, big ears, and an ugly face keep one from being a fine fellow." Sha Seng said, "Stop bickering — this is no place for showing off your cleverness and charm." Let's just go in, let's go in." Thereupon they brought the baggage and the horse into the thatched hall, all together made a bow of greeting, and sat down. The old woman, being kind and virtuous, at once carried the little child back inside, gave orders to cook rice, and prepared a vegetarian meal, which master and disciples ate.
As it gradually grew dark, lamps were lit, and they all sat chatting idly in the thatched hall. The elder then asked, "Benefactor, may I ask your honorable surname?" The old man said, "My surname is Yang." He then asked his age. The old man said, "Seventy-four." He then asked, "How many sons do you have?" The old man said, "Only one." The one my wife was just carrying is my little grandson." The elder asked to meet his son and pay his respects. The old man said, "That wretch is not fit to be greeted with courtesy." 老者點頭而嘆:「可憐,可憐!"This old fool's fate is bitter — I could not raise him properly, and now he is not at home." Sanzang asked, "What trade does he pursue, and where?" The old man nodded and sighed, "Pitiful, pitiful!" If only he would take up some honest trade somewhere, it would be my great good fortune." That wretch is bent solely on wicked thoughts, does not attend to honest work, and delights only in robbing houses, waylaying travelers, killing people, and setting fires." The friends he keeps are nothing but a pack of foxes and dogs." 長老神思不安,欠身道:「善哉!"He went out five days ago and has not returned to this day." Hearing this, Sanzang dared not even breathe a word, but thought secretly to himself, "Perhaps he is one of those Wukong beat to death." Uneasy in spirit, the elder rose slightly and said, "Merciful Heaven!"善哉!"Merciful Heaven!"如此賢父母,何生惡逆兒?」"How could such worthy parents give birth to such a vicious, unfilial son?"
Wukong came forward and said, "Old sir, a son like this — wicked and unworthy, given to theft and depravity, bringing disgrace upon his parents — what use is he? Let me find him for you and beat him to death." The old man said, "I too have wished to be rid of him, but what can I do — I have no other offspring; unworthy as he is, I must still keep him to bury me when I die." Sha Seng and Bajie laughed and said, "Elder brother, don't meddle in other people's affairs — you and I are not the authorities. If his family is unwilling, what business is it of ours? Let us just ask our benefactor to give us a bundle of straw, so we may make our beds over there and sleep, and set off at daybreak." The old man at once rose, and had Sha Seng go to the back garden to fetch some rice straw, telling them to rest in the thatched round hut in the garden. Wukong led the horse, Bajie shouldered the baggage, and together with the elder they all went to rest in the round hut — of this we shall speak no more for now.
Now it is told that among that band of bandits there was indeed old Yang's son. Earlier that morning, when Wukong had killed the two bandit chiefs before the mountain, they had all scattered in flight to save their lives. By about the fourth watch, they had regrouped into a band again, and came pounding at the gate. Hearing the noise at the gate, the old man threw on his clothes and said, "Old wife, that wretch's gang has come." The old woman said, "Since they've come, go open the gate and let them in." Only then did the old man open the gate, and there was that band of bandits, all shouting, "We're starving, we're starving!" Old Yang's son hurried inside, roused his wife, and had her pound rice and cook a meal. But there was no firewood in the kitchen, so he went to the back garden to fetch some; on returning to the kitchen he asked his wife, "Whose white horse is that in the back garden?" His wife said, "It belongs to a monk going to fetch scriptures from the Land of the East. He arrived last night to lodge here; father and mother gave him a vegetarian supper and had him sleep in the thatched round hut."
On hearing this, the wretch walked out of the hall, clapped his hands, and laughed, "Brothers, what luck, what luck! Our enemy is right here in my own house." The bandits asked, "Which enemy?" The wretch said, "None other than the monk who killed our chief — he's come to lodge in my house and is right now asleep in the thatched round hut." The bandits said, "Excellent, excellent! Let's seize these bald donkeys and chop every one of them into mincemeat: first, we'll get their baggage and white horse; second, we'll avenge our chief." The wretch said, "Don't be in such a hurry — go sharpen your knives first. Wait until I've got the rice cooked, so everyone can eat their fill, and then we'll all strike together." Sure enough, those bandits set to it — those with knives sharpened their knives, those with spears sharpened their spears.
When the old man heard these words, he crept quietly to the back garden and roused the four of Tang Seng's party, saying, "That wretch has led his gang here; he knows you are here and means to do you harm. I, old fool that I am, thinking of how far you have traveled, cannot bear to see you harmed. Quickly, pack up your things — let me see you out through the back gate." Hearing this, Sanzang, trembling, kowtowed in thanks to the old man, then at once called Bajie to lead the horse, Sha Seng to shoulder the pack, while Wukong took up the nine-ringed monk's staff. The old man opened the back gate and let them go, then quietly returned to the front and lay down to sleep as before.
Now it is told that once the bandits had sharpened their knives and spears and eaten their fill, it was already the fifth watch; they all went together to the garden to look, but the travelers were gone. They hastily lit lamps and torches and searched for a long while, but found no trace anywhere — only the back gate stood open. They all cried, "They've fled through the back gate, they've fled!" and with a shout set off in pursuit. Each of them ran like the wind, swift as arrows, chasing on until the sun rose in the east, when at last they caught sight of Tang Seng. The elder suddenly heard shouting, and turning to look back, saw some twenty or thirty men coming on in a thick mass of spears and knives. He cried out, "Disciples! The bandit troops are catching up with us — what shall we do?" Wukong said, "Don't worry, don't worry, old Monkey will settle them." Sanzang reined in his horse and said, "Wukong, on no account harm anyone — just frighten them off, that will do." But Wukong had no intention of heeding this; he quickly drew out his cudgel, turned to face them, and said, "Where are you all off to?" The bandits cursed, "Insolent bald wretch! Give us back our chief's life!" The gang formed a ring around Wukong, hemming him in the middle, and raised their spears and knives, hacking and stabbing wildly. The Great Sage gave his gold-banded cudgel a shake, and it grew as thick as a bowl; with it he beat that band of bandits until they scattered like falling stars and drifting clouds — those it struck head-on died at once, those it grazed perished likewise;搕著的骨折,擦著的皮傷;those it knocked had their bones broken, those it brushed had their skin torn;乖些的跑脫幾個,痴些的都見閻王。the cleverer ones managed to run off and escape, while the more foolish ones all went to see King Yama.
Seeing so many men struck down, Sanzang, atop his horse, panicked and let the horse gallop off to the west. Zhu Bajie and Monk Sha followed close behind, whipping their mounts onward. Wukong asked one of the wounded, not-yet-dead bandits, "Which one is old Yang's son?" The bandit groaned and confessed, "Grandfather, it's the one in yellow." Wukong stepped forward, seized a blade, and cut off the head of the one in yellow; holding it dripping with blood in his hand, he put away his iron cudgel, strode forward on cloud-swift steps, and caught up with Tang Seng's horse. Holding up the head, he said, "Master, this is old Yang's unfilial son — old Monkey has taken his head." At the sight, Sanzang went pale with fright, and in his panic fell off his horse, cursing, "You wretched macaque, you've frightened me half to death! Take it away at once, take it away!" Bajie stepped forward, kicked the head off to the side of the road, and used his rake to pile some earth over it.
Sha Seng set down the load and helped support Tang Seng, saying, "Master, please rise." The elder, once steadied on the ground, began to recite the Tight-Fillet Spell, which made Wukong's ears turn red and his face flush, his eyes swell and his head spin; he rolled about on the ground, crying only, "Stop reciting, stop reciting!" The elder recited it more than ten times over and still would not stop. Wukong turned somersaults, stood on his head like a dragonfly, unable to bear the pain, and could only cry, "Master, forgive my offense — if you have something to say, just say it, stop reciting, stop reciting!" Only then did Sanzang stop and say, "I have nothing to say — I don't want you to follow me anymore, go back." Enduring the pain, Wukong kowtowed and said, "Master, why would you drive me away just like this?" Sanzang said, "You wicked ape, you are far too violent and cruel — you are no fit person to fetch scriptures. Yesterday, at the foot of the mountain slope, you killed those two bandit chiefs, and I already blamed you for your lack of mercy. Then in the evening we came to the old man's house, where we received his kindness of a meal and lodging, and further received his kindness in opening the back gate to let us escape with our lives. Although his son was unworthy, and it was none of our affair, still you should not have cut off his head;況又殺死多人,壞了多少生命,傷了天地多少和氣。moreover, you killed so many others besides, destroying how many lives, and doing such harm to the harmony of Heaven and Earth. Time and again I have admonished you, yet you have not one shred of kindly feeling — of what use are you to me? Go quickly, go quickly, before I recite the sacred spell again!" Wukong, frightened, could only say, "Don't recite it, don't recite it, I'm going!" And with those words, he mounted his somersault cloud and, in a flash, vanished without a trace.咦!Alas! This is truly as it is said:

What it’s about
In rough country the pilgrims meet armed bandits who tie Tripitaka up and intend robbery. Wukong frees his master and kills several attackers despite Tripitaka's insistence that a Buddhist disciple must not take life. Later they lodge with an old man whose son belongs to the same gang. The son returns with companions, and another confrontation ends in further deaths. Wukong even presents a severed head to Tripitaka as proof that the danger has been removed.
Horrified by the killings and by Wukong's defiance, Tripitaka recites the Tight-Fillet Spell and dismisses him from the pilgrimage. Wukong pleads that he has protected the monk through repeated ordeals and has nowhere else to go, but Tripitaka writes a formal statement of expulsion and orders him never to return. Wukong leaves for the Flower-Fruit Mountain. The remaining pilgrims resume their road without their strongest protector, while the ethical dispute remains unresolved rather than producing reconciliation.
When it was written 背景
This chapter exposes a durable contradiction in the pilgrimage: Tripitaka's commitment to nonviolence depends repeatedly on Wukong's capacity for violence. The bandits are human rather than transformed beasts, so killing them cannot be excused as revealing a monster's true form. Wukong treats lethal prevention as practical protection, while the monk sees it as a direct betrayal of Buddhist discipline. Their break is therefore more serious than an ordinary quarrel over impatience. The written dismissal tries to turn a volatile relationship into formal moral judgment, yet readers know that the road's dangers have not diminished. That vulnerability prepares the identity crisis of the next chapters.
