這行者與沙僧拜辭了菩薩，縱起兩道祥光，離了南海。Xingzhe and Sha Monk took their leave of the Bodhisattva, and rousing two shafts of auspicious light, departed from the South Sea.原來行者觔斗雲快，沙和尚仙雲覺遲，行者就要先行。Now Xingzhe's somersault cloud was fast, while Sha Monk's immortal cloud was slower to respond, so Xingzhe wanted to go on ahead.沙僧扯住道：「大哥不必這等藏頭露尾，先去安根。Sha Monk caught hold of him and said, "Elder Brother, there's no need to hide your head and show your tail like this, going first to plant your side of the story.待小弟與你一同走。」大聖本是良心，沙僧卻有疑意。Let your little brother go together with you." The Great Sage was at heart honest and good, but Sha Monk still harbored suspicion.真個二人同駕雲而去。Sure enough, the two of them mounted the clouds together and set off.不多時，果見花果山。Before long, they indeed caught sight of Flower-Fruit Mountain.按下雲頭，二人洞外細看，果見一個行者，高坐石臺之上，與群猴飲酒作樂。Bringing their clouds down, the two of them looked closely outside the cave, and sure enough saw a Xingzhe seated high atop a stone dais, drinking and making merry with a crowd of monkeys.模樣與大聖無異：也是黃髮金箍，金睛火眼；His appearance was no different from the Great Sage's: he too had yellow hair and a golden fillet, golden pupils and fiery eyes;身穿也是綿布直裰，腰繫虎皮裙；his body too was clad in a cotton robe, with a tiger-skin skirt tied at the waist;手中也拿一條兒金箍鐵棒；in his hand he too held a gold-banded iron rod;足下也踏一雙麂皮靴；on his feet he too wore a pair of deerskin boots;也是這等毛臉雷公嘴，朔腮別土星，查耳額顱闊，獠牙向外生。he too had that same hairy face like the Thunder God's, a jaw jutting out like Saturn's, ears like winnowing baskets and a broad forehead, with fangs growing outward.

这行者与沙僧拜辞了菩萨，纵起两道祥光，离了南海。原来行者觔斗云快，沙和尚仙云觉迟，行者就要先行。沙僧扯住道：「大哥不必这等藏头露尾，先去安根。待小弟与你一同走。」大圣本是良心，沙僧却有疑意。真个二人同驾云而去。不多时，果见花果山。按下云头，二人洞外细看，果见一个行者，高坐石台之上，与群猴饮酒作乐。模样与大圣无异：也是黄发金箍，金睛火眼；身穿也是绵布直裰，腰系虎皮裙；手中也拿一条儿金箍铁棒；足下也踏一双麂皮靴；也是这等毛脸雷公嘴，朔腮别土星，查耳额颅阔，獠牙向外生。

這大聖怒發，一撒手，撇了沙和尚，掣鐵棒上前罵道：「你是何等妖邪，敢變我的相貌，敢占我的兒孫，擅居吾仙洞，擅作這威福？」那行者見了，公然不答，也使鐵棒來迎。At this the Great Sage's anger flared; letting go with one hand, he abandoned Sha Monk, drew out his iron rod, and stepped forward cursing, "What manner of demon-spirit are you, that you dare transform into my likeness, dare occupy my sons and grandsons, presume to dwell in my immortal cave, and presume to play the tyrant here?" That Xingzhe, seeing him, made no reply at all, but likewise raised his iron rod to meet him.二行者在一處，果是不分真假，好打呀：The two Xingzhe were locked together, and truly one could not tell true from false — what a fight it was!

这大圣怒发，一撒手，撇了沙和尚，掣铁棒上前骂道：「你是何等妖邪，敢变我的相貌，敢占我的儿孙，擅居吾仙洞，擅作这威福？」那行者见了，公然不答，也使铁棒来迎。二行者在一处，果是不分真假，好打呀：

他兩個各踏雲光，跳鬥上九霄雲內。The two of them each trod their cloud-light, leaping and battling up into the ninefold heavens.

他两个各踏云光，跳斗上九霄云内。

沙僧在傍，不敢下手。Sha Monk stood by, not daring to strike.見他們戰此一場，誠然難認真假。Watching them fight this bout, he truly found it impossible to tell which was real and which false.欲待拔刀相助，又恐傷了真的。He wished to draw his blade and lend a hand, yet feared he might wound the true one.忍耐良久，且縱身跳下山崖，使降妖寶杖，打近水簾洞外，驚散群妖，掀翻石凳，把飲酒食肉的器皿盡情打碎。After enduring a good long while, he at last leapt down from the mountain cliff, and wielding his demon-quelling staff, struck his way close to the Water-Curtain Cave, scattering the crowd of demons in fright, overturning the stone benches, and smashing to pieces all the vessels used for wine and meat.尋他的青氈包袱，四下裡全然不見。He searched for his blue felt bundle, but it was nowhere to be seen in any direction.原來他水簾洞本是一股瀑布飛泉，遮掛洞門，遠看似一條白布簾兒，近看乃是一股水脈，故曰水簾洞。It turned out that the Water-Curtain Cave was in fact formed by a cascading waterfall that hung over and screened the cave gate — seen from afar it looked like a white cloth curtain, but seen up close it was a sheet of flowing water, and so it was called the Water-Curtain Cave.沙僧不知進步來歷，故此難尋。Sha Monk did not know the way to enter, and so could not find the bundle.即便縱雲，趕到九霄雲裡，掄著寶杖，又不好下手。He at once mounted the clouds and hurried up into the ninefold heavens, brandishing his precious staff, yet still could find no good chance to strike.大聖道：「沙僧，你既助不得力，且回覆師父，說我等這般這般，等老孫與此妖打上南海落伽山菩薩前辨個真假。」道罷，那行者也如此說。The Great Sage said, "Sha Monk, since you can lend no effective help here, go back instead and report to Master, telling him what has happened, that we are thus and so, while I go fight this demon all the way to the Bodhisattva at Mount Luojia in the South Sea to have the truth distinguished." When he had finished speaking, the other Xingzhe said exactly the same thing.沙僧見兩個相貌、聲音，更無一毫差別，皂白難分，只得依言，撥轉雲頭，回覆唐僧不題。Sha Monk, seeing that the two of them matched in looks and voice without the slightest difference, and unable to tell black from white, had no choice but to follow these words; he turned his cloud about and went back to report to Tang Sanzang — but no more of that for now.

沙僧在傍，不敢下手。见他们战此一场，诚然难认真假。欲待拔刀相助，又恐伤了真的。忍耐良久，且纵身跳下山崖，使降妖宝杖，打近水帘洞外，惊散群妖，掀翻石凳，把饮酒食肉的器皿尽情打碎。寻他的青毡包袱，四下里全然不见。原来他水帘洞本是一股瀑布飞泉，遮挂洞门，远看似一条白布帘儿，近看乃是一股水脉，故曰水帘洞。沙僧不知进步来历，故此难寻。即便纵云，赶到九霄云里，抡著宝杖，又不好下手。大圣道：「沙僧，你既助不得力，且回覆师父，说我等这般这般，等老孙与此妖打上南海落伽山菩萨前辨个真假。」道罢，那行者也如此说。沙僧见两个相貌、声音，更无一毫差别，皂白难分，只得依言，拨转云头，回覆唐僧不题。

你看那兩個行者，且行且鬥，直來到南海，徑至落伽山，打打罵罵，喊聲不絕。Now watch those two Xingzhe, fighting as they went, all the way to the South Sea, straight to Mount Luojia, striking and cursing, their shouts never ceasing.早驚動護法諸天，即報入潮音洞裡道：「菩薩，果然兩個孫悟空打將來也。」那菩薩與木叉行者、善財童子、龍女降蓮臺，出門喝道：「那孽畜那裡走？」這兩個遞相揪住道：「菩薩，這廝果然像弟子模樣。This soon alarmed the Dharma-protecting devas of the various heavens, who at once reported into the Chaoyin Cave, saying, "Bodhisattva, indeed two Sun Wukongs have come fighting this way." The Bodhisattva, together with Muzha Xingzhe and the page Shancai, descended from her lotus throne and came out the door, calling sharply, "Where do you wretched beasts think you're going?" The two of them, still gripping each other, said, "Bodhisattva, this fellow truly looks just like your disciple.才自水簾洞打起，戰鬥多時，不分勝負。We started fighting at the Water-Curtain Cave and have battled a long while now, with neither side able to prevail.沙悟淨肉眼愚蒙，不能分識，有力難助，是弟子教他回西路去回覆師父。Sha Wujing's mortal eyes are dull and untrained, unable to distinguish us, and though he wished to help, he could not, so your disciple told him to go back west and report to Master.我與這廝打到寶山，借菩薩慧眼，與弟子認個真假，辨明邪正。」道罷，那行者也如此說一遍。I have fought this fellow all the way to this treasured mountain, to borrow the Bodhisattva's wise eye, that your disciple might be recognized as true, and right and wrong made clear." When he had finished speaking, the other Xingzhe said exactly the same thing over again.眾諸天與菩薩都看良久，莫想能認。The assembled devas and the Bodhisattva all looked closely for a good long while, but could think of no way to tell them apart.菩薩道：「且放了手，兩邊站下，等我再看。」果然撒手，兩邊站定。The Bodhisattva said, "Let go of each other for now, and stand apart on each side, while I look again." Sure enough, they released their grip and stood apart, one on each side.這邊說：「我是真的。」那邊說：「他是假的。」This one said, "I am the real one." That one said, "He is the fake."

你看那两个行者，且行且斗，直来到南海，径至落伽山，打打骂骂，喊声不绝。早惊动护法诸天，即报入潮音洞里道：「菩萨，果然两个孙悟空打将来也。」那菩萨与木叉行者、善财童子、龙女降莲台，出门喝道：「那孽畜那里走？」这两个递相揪住道：「菩萨，这厮果然像弟子模样。才自水帘洞打起，战斗多时，不分胜负。沙悟净肉眼愚蒙，不能分识，有力难助，是弟子教他回西路去回覆师父。我与这厮打到宝山，借菩萨慧眼，与弟子认个真假，辨明邪正。」道罢，那行者也如此说一遍。众诸天与菩萨都看良久，莫想能认。菩萨道：「且放了手，两边站下，等我再看。」果然撒手，两边站定。这边说：「我是真的。」那边说：「他是假的。」

菩薩喚木叉與善財上前，悄悄吩咐：「你一個幫住一個，等我暗念緊箍兒咒，看那個害疼的便是真，不疼的便是假。」他二人果各幫一個。The Bodhisattva called Muzha and Shancai forward and quietly instructed them, "Each of you take hold of one of them, and while I silently recite the Tight-Fillet Spell, watch which one cries out in pain — that one is the real one, and the one who feels no pain is the fake." The two of them accordingly each took hold of one.菩薩暗念真言，兩個一齊喊疼，都抱著頭，地下打滾，只叫：「莫念，莫念。」菩薩不念，他兩個又一齊揪住，照舊嚷鬥。The Bodhisattva silently recited the true words, and both of them at once cried out in pain together, clutching their heads and rolling on the ground, crying only, "Stop reciting, stop reciting!" The Bodhisattva stopped, and the two of them at once seized each other again and went on brawling as before.菩薩無計奈何，即令諸天、木叉上前助力。The Bodhisattva, at her wits' end, at once ordered the devas and Muzha to step forward and lend their strength.眾神恐傷真的，亦不敢下手。But the assembled gods, fearing they might harm the real one, likewise dared not strike.菩薩叫聲「孫悟空」，兩個一齊答應。The Bodhisattva called out, "Sun Wukong!" and both of them answered together.菩薩道：「你當年官拜弼馬溫，大鬧天宮時，神將皆認得你，你且上界去分辨回話。」這大聖謝恩，那行者也謝恩。The Bodhisattva said, "In years past you held the office of Bimawen, and when you made great havoc in Heaven, the divine generals there all came to know you well. Go up to the heavenly realm and have the matter argued out and settled there." The Great Sage gave thanks, and the other Xingzhe likewise gave thanks.

菩萨唤木叉与善财上前，悄悄吩咐：「你一个帮住一个，等我暗念紧箍儿咒，看那个害疼的便是真，不疼的便是假。」他二人果各帮一个。菩萨暗念真言，两个一齐喊疼，都抱著头，地下打滚，只叫：「莫念，莫念。」菩萨不念，他两个又一齐揪住，照旧嚷斗。菩萨无计奈何，即令诸天、木叉上前助力。众神恐伤真的，亦不敢下手。菩萨叫声「孙悟空」，两个一齐答应。菩萨道：「你当年官拜弼马温，大闹天宫时，神将皆认得你，你且上界去分辨回话。」这大圣谢恩，那行者也谢恩。

二人扯扯拉拉，口裡不住的嚷鬥，徑至南天門外。The two of them, pulling and dragging at each other, mouths never ceasing their brawling and shouting, went straight to the outside of the South Heavenly Gate.慌得那廣目天王帥馬、趙、溫、關四大天將，及把門大小眾神，各使兵器擋住道：「那裡走？In alarm, the Wide-Eyed Heavenly King, leading the four great heavenly generals Ma, Zhao, Wen, and Guan, along with all the greater and lesser gods guarding the gate, each raised their weapons to bar the way, saying, "Where do you think you're going?此間可是爭鬥之處？」大聖道：「我因保護唐僧往西天取經，在路上打殺賊徒，那三藏趕我回去，我徑到普陀崖見觀音菩薩訴苦。Is this a place for brawling?" The Great Sage said, "Because I was escorting Tang Sanzang to the Western Heaven to fetch the scriptures, and on the road I killed some bandits, my master drove me away, and I went straight to the Putuo Cliff to see the Bodhisattva Guanyin and pour out my grievance.不想這妖精幾時就變作我的模樣，打倒唐僧，搶去包袱。Little did I expect that this demon-spirit had, at some point, transformed into my exact likeness, struck down Tang Sanzang, and seized our bundle.有沙僧至花果山尋討，只見這妖精占了我的巢穴。Sha Monk went to Flower-Fruit Mountain to demand the belongings back, and there found this demon-spirit occupying my very lair.後到普陀崖告請菩薩，又見我侍立臺下，沙僧誑說是我駕觔斗雲，又先在菩薩處遮飾。He then went to Putuo Cliff to report to the Bodhisattva, and there too found me standing in attendance below her dais; Sha Monk falsely claimed it was I who had ridden the somersault cloud there ahead of him, having already concealed the truth before the Bodhisattva.菩薩卻是個正明，不聽沙僧之言，命我同他到花果山看驗。But the Bodhisattva is one of true discernment, and would not simply believe Sha Monk's words, so she ordered me to go with him to Flower-Fruit Mountain to investigate.原來這妖精果像老孫模樣，才自水簾洞打到落伽山見菩薩，菩薩也難識認。It turned out this demon-spirit truly resembled old Monkey in every way, and just now we fought from the Water-Curtain Cave all the way to Mount Luojia to see the Bodhisattva, and even she found it hard to tell us apart.故打至此間，煩諸天眼力，與我認個真假。」道罷，那行者也似這般這般說了一遍。So we have fought our way here, to trouble the discerning eyes of the heavenly hosts, that they might distinguish true from false for me." When he had finished speaking, the other Xingzhe likewise said all the same things in the same way.眾天神看夠多時，也不能辨。The assembled heavenly gods looked them over for a good long while, but likewise could not tell them apart.他兩個吆喝道：「你們既不能認，讓開路，等我們去見玉帝！」The two of them shouted together, "Since none of you can tell us apart, clear the way and let us go before the Jade Emperor!"

二人扯扯拉拉，口里不住的嚷斗，径至南天门外。慌得那广目天王帅马、赵、温、关四大天将，及把门大小众神，各使兵器挡住道：「那里走？此间可是争斗之处？」大圣道：「我因保护唐僧往西天取经，在路上打杀贼徒，那三藏赶我回去，我径到普陀崖见观音菩萨诉苦。不想这妖精几时就变作我的模样，打倒唐僧，抢去包袱。有沙僧至花果山寻讨，只见这妖精占了我的巢穴。后到普陀崖告请菩萨，又见我侍立台下，沙僧诳说是我驾觔斗云，又先在菩萨处遮饰。菩萨却是个正明，不听沙僧之言，命我同他到花果山看验。原来这妖精果像老孙模样，才自水帘洞打到落伽山见菩萨，菩萨也难识认。故打至此间，烦诸天眼力，与我认个真假。」道罢，那行者也似这般这般说了一遍。众天神看够多时，也不能辨。他两个吆喝道：「你们既不能认，让开路，等我们去见玉帝！」

眾神搪抵不住，放開天門，直至靈霄寶殿。The assembled gods could not hold them back, and so opened the Heavenly Gate, letting them go straight to the Hall of Miraculous Mist.馬元帥同張、葛、許、丘四天師奏道：「下界有一般兩個孫悟空打進天門，口稱見王。」說不了，兩個直嚷進來。Marshal Ma, together with the four Celestial Masters Zhang, Ge, Xu, and Qiu, memorialized, "Down in the lower world there are, strangely, two Sun Wukongs who have fought their way into the Heavenly Gate, both claiming they must see Your Majesty." Before they had even finished speaking, the two of them came shouting straight in.諕得那玉帝即降立寶殿，問曰：「你兩個因甚事擅鬧天宮，嚷至朕前尋死？」大聖口稱：「萬歲，萬歲，臣今皈命，秉教沙門，再不敢欺心誑上。Startled, the Jade Emperor at once came down to stand before his throne and asked, "For what reason have the two of you presumed to disturb Heaven, shouting your way before Us to court death?" The Great Sage spoke up, "Ten thousand years, ten thousand years! Your subject has now submitted to the true faith, upholding the teachings of the Buddhist gate, and would never again dare deceive his sovereign.只因這個妖精變作臣的模樣， ……」如此如彼，把前情備陳了一遍，「望乞與臣辨個真假。」那行者也如此陳了一遍。It is only because this demon-spirit transformed into your subject's likeness..." and so on and so forth, he set out the whole affair from beginning to end, "...that I beg you to distinguish true from false for your subject." The other Xingzhe likewise set out the same account in the same way.玉帝即傳旨宣托塔李天王，教：「把照妖鏡來照這廝誰真誰假，教他假滅真存。」天王即取鏡照住，請玉帝同眾神觀看。The Jade Emperor at once issued an edict summoning Pagoda-Bearing Heavenly King Li, instructing him, "Bring the demon-revealing mirror to shine upon these two and see which is true and which false, so that the false may be destroyed and the true preserved." The Heavenly King at once took the mirror and held them fixed in it, inviting the Jade Emperor and all the assembled gods to look together.鏡中乃是兩個孫悟空的影子，金箍、衣服，毫髮不差。In the mirror were the reflections of two Sun Wukongs, their golden fillets and garments identical down to the last hair.玉帝亦辨不出，趕出殿外。Even the Jade Emperor could not tell them apart, and had them driven outside the hall.

众神搪抵不住，放开天门，直至灵霄宝殿。马元帅同张、葛、许、丘四天师奏道：「下界有一般两个孙悟空打进天门，口称见王。」说不了，两个直嚷进来。諕得那玉帝即降立宝殿，问曰：「你两个因甚事擅闹天宫，嚷至朕前寻死？」大圣口称：「万岁，万岁，臣今皈命，秉教沙门，再不敢欺心诳上。只因这个妖精变作臣的模样， ……」如此如彼，把前情备陈了一遍，「望乞与臣辨个真假。」那行者也如此陈了一遍。玉帝即传旨宣托塔李天王，教：「把照妖镜来照这厮谁真谁假，教他假灭真存。」天王即取镜照住，请玉帝同众神观看。镜中乃是两个孙悟空的影子，金箍、衣服，毫发不差。玉帝亦辨不出，赶出殿外。

這大聖呵呵冷笑，那行者也哈哈歡喜。At this the Great Sage laughed coldly, ha ha, while the other Xingzhe likewise laughed merrily, ha ha.揪頭抹頸，復打出天門，墜落西方路上道：「我和你見師父去，我和你見師父去。」Grabbing each other by the hair and neck, they fought their way back out through the Heavenly Gate once more, tumbling down onto the road to the West, saying, "Let's go see Master together, let's go see Master together."

这大圣呵呵冷笑，那行者也哈哈欢喜。揪头抹颈，复打出天门，坠落西方路上道：「我和你见师父去，我和你见师父去。」

卻說那沙僧自花果山辭他兩個，又行了三晝夜，回至本莊，把前事對唐僧說了一遍。Now to speak of Sha Monk: after parting from the two of them at Flower-Fruit Mountain, he traveled another three days and nights, and returned to the farmstead, where he related the whole preceding affair to Tang Sanzang.唐僧自家悔恨道：「當時只說是孫悟空打我一棍，搶去包袱，豈知卻是妖精假變的行者。」沙僧又告道：「這妖又假變一個長老，一匹白馬；Tang Sanzang, filled with regret, said to himself, "At the time I only thought it was Sun Wukong who struck me with his rod and seized our bundle — how was I to know it was in fact a demon-spirit falsely disguised as Xingzhe." Sha Monk went on to report, "This demon also falsely transformed a Tang Monk, and a white horse;又有一個八戒挑著我們包袱，又有一個變作是我。and there was also a Bajie carrying our bundle, and another who transformed into myself.我忍不住惱怒，一杖打死，原是一個猴精。Unable to bear my anger, I struck him dead with one blow of my staff, and it turned out to be nothing but a monkey-spirit.因此驚散，又到菩薩處訴苦。Because of this the others scattered in fright, and I then went to the Bodhisattva's place to pour out my grievance.菩薩著我與師兄又同去識認，那妖果與師兄一般模樣。The Bodhisattva had me go together with Elder Brother once more to identify the true one, and this demon indeed looked exactly the same as Elder Brother.我難助力，故先來回覆師父。」三藏聞言，大驚失色。Since I could lend no real help, I came back first to report to Master." On hearing this, Tang Sanzang was greatly startled, his face draining of color.八戒哈哈大笑道：「好好好，應了這施主家婆婆之言了：他說有幾起取經的，這卻不又是一起？」Bajie laughed heartily, ha ha, and said, "Well, well, well, so it has come true, just as that old grandmother of our host's family said: she said there had already been several parties of scripture-seekers passing through — and isn't this just another one of them?"

却说那沙僧自花果山辞他两个，又行了三昼夜，回至本庄，把前事对唐僧说了一遍。唐僧自家悔恨道：「当时只说是孙悟空打我一棍，抢去包袱，岂知却是妖精假变的行者。」沙僧又告道：「这妖又假变一个长老，一匹白马；又有一个八戒挑著我们包袱，又有一个变作是我。我忍不住恼怒，一杖打死，原是一个猴精。因此惊散，又到菩萨处诉苦。菩萨著我与师兄又同去识认，那妖果与师兄一般模样。我难助力，故先来回覆师父。」三藏闻言，大惊失色。八戒哈哈大笑道：「好好好，应了这施主家婆婆之言了：他说有几起取经的，这却不又是一起？」

那家老老小小的都來問沙僧道：「你這幾日往何處討盤纏去的？」沙僧笑道：「我往東勝神洲花果山尋大師兄取討行李，又到南海普陀山拜見觀音菩薩，卻又到花果山，方才轉回至此。」那老者又問：「往返有多少路程？」沙僧道：「約有二十餘萬里。」老者道：「爺爺呀！The whole household, young and old, all came and asked Sha Monk, "Where have you been these past days, going to beg for travel money?" Sha Monk laughed and said, "I went to Flower-Fruit Mountain in Aparagodaniya to find my elder martial brother and demand back our luggage, then went to Mount Putuo in the South Sea to pay respects to the Bodhisattva Guanyin, and then went back again to Flower-Fruit Mountain, and only just now have I turned back and returned here." The old man asked further, "How great a distance did you cover, going and returning?" Sha Monk said, "Somewhere over two hundred thousand li." The old man said, "Goodness me!似這幾日，就走了這許多路，只除是駕雲，方能夠得到！」八戒道：「不是駕雲，如何過海？」沙僧道：「我們那算得走路，若是我大師兄，只消一二日，可往回也。」那家子聽言，都說是神仙。To have traveled so great a distance in just these few days — nothing but riding the clouds could possibly manage it!" Bajie said, "If not by riding the clouds, how else could we cross the sea?" Sha Monk said, "What we do hardly counts as traveling at all — if it were my elder martial brother, he could go there and back in a day or two." On hearing this, the whole household all declared that they must be immortals.八戒道：「我們雖不是神仙，神仙還是我們的晚輩哩！」Bajie said, "Though we ourselves are not immortals, immortals are but junior to us!"

那家老老小小的都来问沙僧道：「你这几日往何处讨盘缠去的？」沙僧笑道：「我往东胜神洲花果山寻大师兄取讨行李，又到南海普陀山拜见观音菩萨，却又到花果山，方才转回至此。」那老者又问：「往返有多少路程？」沙僧道：「约有二十余万里。」老者道：「爷爷呀！似这几日，就走了这许多路，只除是驾云，方能够得到！」八戒道：「不是驾云，如何过海？」沙僧道：「我们那算得走路，若是我大师兄，只消一二日，可往回也。」那家子听言，都说是神仙。八戒道：「我们虽不是神仙，神仙还是我们的晚辈哩！」

正說間，只聽半空中喧嘩亂嚷。Just as they were speaking, they suddenly heard an uproar of shouting and clamor high up in the sky.慌得都出來看，卻是兩個行者打將來。In alarm, everyone rushed outside to look, and sure enough it was the two Xingzhe come fighting this way.八戒見了，忍不住手癢道：「等我去認認看。」好獃子，急縱身跳起，望空高叫道：「師兄莫嚷，我老豬來也！」那兩個一齊應道：「兄弟，來打妖精，來打妖精。」那家子又驚又喜道：「是幾位騰雲駕霧的羅漢歇在我家，就是發願齋僧的，也齋不著這等好人。」更不計較茶飯，愈加供養。When Bajie saw them, he could not restrain his itching hands and said, "Let me go and see if I can tell them apart." The fine idiot at once leapt swiftly into the air and called out loudly toward the sky, "Elder Brothers, stop your shouting — old Hog is coming!" The two of them answered together, "Brother, come help us beat the demon, come help us beat the demon!" The household, both startled and delighted, said, "So these are several Arhats who ride clouds and mount mists lodging in our home — even a household that had vowed to feast monks could never manage to feast such fine men as these." They no longer fussed over the tea and meals, but served them all the more generously.又說：「這兩個行者只怕鬥出不好來，地覆天翻，作禍在那裡！」三藏見那老者當面是喜，背後是憂，即開言道：「老施主放心，莫生憂嘆。They also said, "But these two Xingzhe fighting like this — I fear it will end badly, turning heaven and earth upside down, and disaster will befall us right here!" Tang Sanzang, seeing that the old man wore joy on his face but worry underneath, spoke up at once, "Old benefactor, set your mind at ease, and do not fall into worry and sighing.貧僧收伏了徒弟，去惡歸善，自然謝你。」那老者滿口回答道：「不敢，不敢。」沙僧道：「施主休講。This poor monk will subdue his disciple, turning evil back to good, and will surely repay your kindness." The old man replied again and again, "I would not presume, I would not presume." Sha Monk said, "Benefactor, say no more of that.師父可坐在這裡，等我和二哥去，一家扯一個來到你面前，你就念念那話兒，看那個害疼的就是真的，不疼的就是假的。」三藏道：「言之極當。」Master, please sit here, and let my second elder brother and me go — we will each pull one of them by the hand and bring them before you, and then you need only recite that spell of yours, and whichever one cries out in pain will be the real one, and whichever feels no pain will be the fake." Tang Sanzang said, "That is exactly right."

正说间，只听半空中喧哗乱嚷。慌得都出来看，却是两个行者打将来。八戒见了，忍不住手痒道：「等我去认认看。」好呆子，急纵身跳起，望空高叫道：「师兄莫嚷，我老猪来也！」那两个一齐应道：「兄弟，来打妖精，来打妖精。」那家子又惊又喜道：「是几位腾云驾雾的罗汉歇在我家，就是发愿斋僧的，也斋不著这等好人。」更不计较茶饭，愈加供养。又说：「这两个行者只怕斗出不好来，地覆天翻，作祸在那里！」三藏见那老者当面是喜，背后是忧，即开言道：「老施主放心，莫生忧叹。贫僧收伏了徒弟，去恶归善，自然谢你。」那老者满口回答道：「不敢，不敢。」沙僧道：「施主休讲。师父可坐在这里，等我和二哥去，一家扯一个来到你面前，你就念念那话儿，看那个害疼的就是真的，不疼的就是假的。」三藏道：「言之极当。」

沙僧果起在半空道：「二位住了手，我同你到師父面前辨個真假去。」這大聖放了手，那行者也放了手。Sha Monk then rose straight up into the air and said, "You two, stop your hands, and come with me before Master to have true and false distinguished." At this the Great Sage let go, and the other Xingzhe let go as well.沙僧攙住一個，叫道：「二哥，你也攙住一個。」果然攙住，落下雲頭，徑至草舍門外。Sha Monk took hold of one of them and called out, "Second Elder Brother, you take hold of the other one too." Sure enough, Bajie took hold of him, and bringing their clouds down, they went straight to outside the thatched cottage door.三藏見了，就念緊箍兒咒。When Tang Sanzang saw them, he at once began reciting the Tight-Fillet Spell.二人一齊叫苦道：「我們這等苦鬥，你還咒我怎的？The two of them cried out in pain together, "We are fighting this hard a battle, and still you must curse us like this?莫念，莫念。」那長老本心慈善，遂住了口不念，卻也不認得真假。Stop reciting, stop reciting!" The old monk was by nature kind and compassionate at heart, and so he stopped and recited no further — but even so he still could not tell which was true and which false.他兩個掙脫手，依然又打。The two of them wrenched themselves free and once again fell to fighting.這大聖道：「兄弟們保著師父，等我與他打到閻王前折辨去也。」那行者也如此說。The Great Sage said, "Brothers, guard our master well, while I go fight this fellow before King Yama himself to have it argued out." The other Xingzhe said exactly the same thing.二人抓抓掗掗，須臾又不見了。The two of them, grabbing and clawing at each other, vanished from sight in a moment.

沙僧果起在半空道：「二位住了手，我同你到师父面前辨个真假去。」这大圣放了手，那行者也放了手。沙僧搀住一个，叫道：「二哥，你也搀住一个。」果然搀住，落下云头，径至草舍门外。三藏见了，就念紧箍儿咒。二人一齐叫苦道：「我们这等苦斗，你还咒我怎的？莫念，莫念。」那长老本心慈善，遂住了口不念，却也不认得真假。他两个挣脱手，依然又打。这大圣道：「兄弟们保著师父，等我与他打到阎王前折辨去也。」那行者也如此说。二人抓抓挜挜，须臾又不见了。

八戒道：「沙僧，你既到水簾洞，看見假八戒挑著行李，怎麼不搶將來？」沙僧道：「那妖精見我使寶杖打他假沙僧，他就亂圍上來要拿，是我顧性命走了。Bajie said, "Sha Monk, since you got as far as the Water-Curtain Cave and saw the fake Bajie carrying our luggage, why didn't you snatch it back?" Sha Monk said, "When that demon-spirit saw me strike his fake Sha Monk with my staff, he came swarming up to seize me, and I had to flee just to save my life.及告菩薩，與行者復至洞口，他兩個打在空中，是我去掀翻他的石凳，打散他的小妖。Then, after reporting to the Bodhisattva, I went back to the cave mouth with Xingzhe, and while the two of them fought up in the air, I went and overturned his stone benches and scattered his lesser demons.只見一股瀑布泉水流，竟不知洞門開在何處，尋不著行李，所以空手回覆師命也。」八戒道：「你原來不曉得。But I saw only a cascading waterfall of spring water flowing there, and had no idea where the cave gate opened, so I could not find the luggage, and that is why I came back empty-handed to report to Master." Bajie said, "So you truly didn't know.我前年請他去時，先在洞門外相見。When I went there the year before last to invite him, we first met outside the cave gate.後被我說泛了他，他就跳下，去洞裡換衣來時，我看見他將身往水裡一鑽。Later, after I had provoked him with words until he lost his temper, he leapt down and went into the cave to change his clothes, and I saw him plunge his body straight into the water.那一股瀑布水流，就是洞門。That cascading sheet of waterfall water is in fact the cave gate.想必那怪將我們包袱收在那裡面也。」三藏道：「你既知此門，你可趁他都不在，可先到他洞裡取出包袱，我們往西天去罷。That demon must have stored our bundle away in there." Tang Sanzang said, "Since you already know of this gate, you should take the chance while none of them are there, and go first into his cave to fetch out the bundle, so that we may set off for the Western Heaven.他就來，我也不用他了。」八戒道：「我去。」沙僧說：「二哥，他那洞前有千數小猴，你一人恐弄他不過，反為不美。」八戒笑道：「不怕，不怕。」急出門，縱著雲霧，徑上花果山尋取行李不題。When he comes back, I will simply have no more use for him." Bajie said, "I'll go." Sha Monk said, "Second Elder Brother, there are a thousand or so lesser monkeys before that cave — I fear you alone may not be able to handle them, and it would only turn out badly." Bajie laughed and said, "No fear, no fear." He hurried out the door, mounted the clouds and mist, and went straight to Flower-Fruit Mountain to search for the luggage — but no more of that for now.

八戒道：「沙僧，你既到水帘洞，看见假八戒挑著行李，怎么不抢将来？」沙僧道：「那妖精见我使宝杖打他假沙僧，他就乱围上来要拿，是我顾性命走了。及告菩萨，与行者复至洞口，他两个打在空中，是我去掀翻他的石凳，打散他的小妖。只见一股瀑布泉水流，竟不知洞门开在何处，寻不著行李，所以空手回覆师命也。」八戒道：「你原来不晓得。我前年请他去时，先在洞门外相见。后被我说泛了他，他就跳下，去洞里换衣来时，我看见他将身往水里一钻。那一股瀑布水流，就是洞门。想必那怪将我们包袱收在那里面也。」三藏道：「你既知此门，你可趁他都不在，可先到他洞里取出包袱，我们往西天去罢。他就来，我也不用他了。」八戒道：「我去。」沙僧说：「二哥，他那洞前有千数小猴，你一人恐弄他不过，反为不美。」八戒笑道：「不怕，不怕。」急出门，纵著云雾，径上花果山寻取行李不题。

卻說那兩個行者又打嚷到陰山背後，諕得那滿山鬼戰戰兢兢，藏藏躲躲。Now to speak again of the two Xingzhe: fighting and shouting, they made their way to the far side of Yin Mountain, startling every ghost on the mountain into trembling fear, hiding and cowering.有先跑的，撞入陰司門裡，報上森羅寶殿道：「大王，背陰山上有兩個齊天大聖打將來也。」慌得那第一殿秦廣王傳報與二殿楚江王、三殿宋帝王、四殿卞城王、五殿閻羅王、六殿平等王、七殿泰山王、八殿都市王、九殿忤官王、十殿轉輪王：一殿轉一殿，霎時間，十王會齊，又著人飛報與地藏王。Some who had run ahead rushed into the gate of the underworld and reported up at the Senluo Hall, "Great King, on the far side of Yin Mountain two Great Sages Equal to Heaven have come fighting this way!" In alarm, Qinguang Wang of the First Hall sent word on to Chujiang Wang of the Second Hall, Songdi Wang of the Third Hall, Bianchengwang of the Fourth Hall, Yanluo Wang of the Fifth Hall, Pingdengwang of the Sixth Hall, Taishan Wang of the Seventh Hall, Dushiwang of the Eighth Hall, Wuguanwang of the Ninth Hall, and Zhuanlunwang of the Tenth Hall — each hall passing word to the next — and in but a moment all Ten Kings had gathered together, and further sent someone flying to report to Dizang Wang as well.盡在森羅殿上，點聚陰兵，等擒真假。All of them assembled at Senluo Hall, mustering the underworld troops, waiting to seize the true and the false.只聽得那強風滾滾，慘霧漫漫，二行者一翻一滾的打至森羅殿下。They heard only a howling wind rolling in and a dismal mist spreading thick, as the two Xingzhe, tumbling and rolling over each other, fought their way down before Senluo Hall.

却说那两个行者又打嚷到阴山背后，諕得那满山鬼战战兢兢，藏藏躲躲。有先跑的，撞入阴司门里，报上森罗宝殿道：「大王，背阴山上有两个齐天大圣打将来也。」慌得那第一殿秦广王传报与二殿楚江王、三殿宋帝王、四殿卞城王、五殿阎罗王、六殿平等王、七殿泰山王、八殿都市王、九殿忤官王、十殿转轮王：一殿转一殿，霎时间，十王会齐，又著人飞报与地藏王。尽在森罗殿上，点聚阴兵，等擒真假。只听得那强风滚滚，惨雾漫漫，二行者一翻一滚的打至森罗殿下。

陰君近前擋住道：「大聖有何事，鬧我幽冥？」這大聖道：「我因保唐僧西天取經，路過西梁國，至一山，有強賊截劫我師。The Kings of the Underworld came forward to bar their way, saying, "Great Sage, what business brings you here to disturb our realm of shades?" The Great Sage said, "Because I was escorting Tang Sanzang to the Western Heaven to fetch the scriptures, we passed through the country of Western Liang, and at a certain mountain there were fierce bandits who waylaid and robbed my master.是老孫打死幾個，師父怪我，把我逐回。Old Monkey killed several of them, and my master, blaming me, drove me away.我隨到南海菩薩處訴告，不知那妖精怎麼就綽著口氣，假變作我的模樣，在半路上打倒師父，搶奪了行李。I then went to the Bodhisattva at the South Sea to pour out my grievance, never expecting that this demon-spirit would somehow seize the opportunity, falsely transform into my exact likeness, strike down my master on the road, and rob him of our luggage.師弟沙僧向我本山取討包袱，這妖假立師名，要往西天取經。My fellow disciple Sha Monk went to my own mountain to demand the bundle back, and this demon falsely set himself up under my master's name, claiming he would go to fetch scriptures from the West.沙僧逃遁至南海見菩薩，我正在側。Sha Monk fled to the South Sea to see the Bodhisattva, and I happened to be standing right there at her side.他備說原因，菩薩又命我同他至花果山觀看，果被這廝占了我巢穴。He related the whole cause of it in full, and the Bodhisattva again ordered me to go with him to Flower-Fruit Mountain to look — and sure enough this fellow had occupied my very lair.我與他爭辨到菩薩處，其實相貌、言語等俱一般，菩薩也難辨真假。I argued the matter with him all the way to the Bodhisattva's place, but in truth our looks and speech were exactly alike in every way, and even the Bodhisattva found it hard to tell true from false.又與這廝打上天堂，眾神亦果難辨。I fought with this fellow again all the way up to the Heavenly Palace, and the assembled gods there likewise truly could not tell us apart.因見我師，我師念緊箍咒試驗，與我一般疼痛。When we then went before my master, my master recited the Tight-Fillet Spell to test us, and I suffered the same pain as he did.故此鬧至幽冥，望陰君與我查看生死簿，看假行者是何出身，快早追他魂魄，免教二心沌亂。」那怪亦如此說一遍。That is why I have brought this disturbance all the way down to the realm of shades, hoping the Kings of the Underworld might examine the Register of Life and Death for me, to see what origin this fake Xingzhe truly comes from, and swiftly pursue and seize his soul, lest this two-heartedness go on causing chaos and confusion." That demon-spirit likewise repeated the same account word for word.陰君聞言，即喚管簿判官一一從頭查勘，更無個假行者之名。On hearing this, the Kings of the Underworld at once summoned the register-keeping judges to examine the records one by one from the beginning, but there was no name of any fake Xingzhe to be found at all.再看毛蟲文簿，那猴子一百三十條，已是孫大聖幼年得道之時，大鬧陰司，消死名，一筆勾之。Looking further in the register of hairy creatures, they found that this monkey's one hundred thirty entries had, back in the days when the Great Sage first attained the Way in his youth and made great havoc in the underworld, already had his name erased from the register of death, struck out with a single stroke of the brush.自後來，凡是猴屬，盡無名號。Ever since that time, all creatures of the monkey kind have had no names entered in the registers at all.查勘畢，當殿回報。When the examination was complete, they reported this back before the hall.陰君各執笏，對行者道：「大聖，幽冥處既無名號可查，你還到陽間去折辨。」The Kings of the Underworld, each holding their tablets of office, said to the two Xingzhe, "Great Sage, since the realm of shades has no name on record to check, you must go back to the world of the living to argue the matter out further."

阴君近前挡住道：「大圣有何事，闹我幽冥？」这大圣道：「我因保唐僧西天取经，路过西梁国，至一山，有强贼截劫我师。是老孙打死几个，师父怪我，把我逐回。我随到南海菩萨处诉告，不知那妖精怎么就绰著口气，假变作我的模样，在半路上打倒师父，抢夺了行李。师弟沙僧向我本山取讨包袱，这妖假立师名，要往西天取经。沙僧逃遁至南海见菩萨，我正在侧。他备说原因，菩萨又命我同他至花果山观看，果被这厮占了我巢穴。我与他争辨到菩萨处，其实相貌、言语等俱一般，菩萨也难辨真假。又与这厮打上天堂，众神亦果难辨。因见我师，我师念紧箍咒试验，与我一般疼痛。故此闹至幽冥，望阴君与我查看生死簿，看假行者是何出身，快早追他魂魄，免教二心沌乱。」那怪亦如此说一遍。阴君闻言，即唤管簿判官一一从头查勘，更无个假行者之名。再看毛虫文簿，那猴子一百三十条，已是孙大圣幼年得道之时，大闹阴司，消死名，一笔勾之。自后来，凡是猴属，尽无名号。查勘毕，当殿回报。阴君各执笏，对行者道：「大圣，幽冥处既无名号可查，你还到阳间去折辨。」

正說處，只聽得地藏王菩薩道：「且住，且住。Just as they were speaking thus, they suddenly heard the Bodhisattva Dizang Wang say, "Wait, wait a moment.等我著諦聽與你聽個真假。」原來那諦聽是地藏菩薩經案下伏的一個獸名。Let me have Diting listen and tell true from false for you." It turned out that Diting was the name of a beast that lay crouched beneath Dizang Bodhisattva's scripture table.他若伏在地下，一霎時，將四大部洲山川社稷，洞天福地之間，蠃蟲、鱗蟲、毛蟲、羽蟲、昆蟲、天仙、地仙、神仙、人仙、鬼仙，可以照鑒善惡，察聽賢愚。Whenever it crouches down upon the earth, in but an instant it can perceive and know good and evil, and hear and discern the worthy and the foolish, among all the shelled creatures, scaled creatures, hairy creatures, feathered creatures, and insect creatures, as well as the heavenly immortals, earthly immortals, divine immortals, human immortals, and ghost immortals, throughout the mountains, rivers, and lands of the Four Great Continents, and among the grotto-heavens and blessed lands.那獸奉地藏鈞旨，就於森羅庭院之中，俯伏在地。That beast, obeying Dizang's solemn command, at once crouched down upon the ground there in the courtyard of Senluo Hall.須臾，擡起頭來，對地藏道：「怪名雖有，但不可當面說破，又不能助力擒他。」地藏道：「當面說出便怎麼？」諦聽道：「當面說出，恐妖精惡發，搔擾寶殿，致令陰府不安。」又問：「何為不能助力擒拿？」諦聽道：「妖精神通，與孫大聖無二。After a moment, it raised its head and said to Dizang, "Though the name of the demon exists, it must not be spoken openly to his face, nor can I help capture him." Dizang said, "What would happen if it were spoken to his face?" Diting said, "If spoken openly, I fear the demon-spirit would fly into a rage and cause an uproar in this precious hall, bringing unrest to the underworld." Dizang then asked further, "And why can you not help capture him?" Diting said, "This demon-spirit's magic powers are no different at all from the Great Sage's own.幽冥之神，能有多少法力？How much power could the gods of the shadowy underworld possibly have?故此不能擒拿。」地藏道：「似這般怎生祛除？」諦聽言：「佛法無邊。」地藏早已省悟，即對行者道：「你兩個形容如一，神通無二，若要辨明，須到雷音寺釋迦如來那裡，方得明白。」兩個一齊嚷道：「說的是，說的是。That is why I cannot help capture him." Dizang said, "Then how might such a creature be driven out and dealt with?" Diting said, "The Buddha's Law is boundless." At this Dizang at once understood, and said to the two Xingzhe, "The two of you are alike in form and equal in magic power — if you wish to have the matter made clear, you must go to Thunderclap Monastery, to Śākyamuni Tathāgata himself, and only there will it be made plain." The two of them cried out together, "Well said, well said!我和你西天佛祖之前折辨去。」那十殿陰君送出，謝了地藏，回上翠雲宮，著鬼使閉了幽冥關隘不題。Let us go argue this out before the Buddha of the Western Heaven together." The Ten Kings of the Underworld saw them off, and after thanking Dizang, returned up to the Palace of Kingfisher Clouds, and had the ghost-attendants close up the passes of the underworld — but no more of that for now.

正说处，只听得地藏王菩萨道：「且住，且住。等我著谛听与你听个真假。」原来那谛听是地藏菩萨经案下伏的一个兽名。他若伏在地下，一霎时，将四大部洲山川社稷，洞天福地之间，蠃虫、鳞虫、毛虫、羽虫、昆虫、天仙、地仙、神仙、人仙、鬼仙，可以照鉴善恶，察听贤愚。那兽奉地藏钧旨，就于森罗庭院之中，俯伏在地。须臾，抬起头来，对地藏道：「怪名虽有，但不可当面说破，又不能助力擒他。」地藏道：「当面说出便怎么？」谛听道：「当面说出，恐妖精恶发，搔扰宝殿，致令阴府不安。」又问：「何为不能助力擒拿？」谛听道：「妖精神通，与孙大圣无二。幽冥之神，能有多少法力？故此不能擒拿。」地藏道：「似这般怎生祛除？」谛听言：「佛法无边。」地藏早已省悟，即对行者道：「你两个形容如一，神通无二，若要辨明，须到雷音寺释迦如来那里，方得明白。」两个一齐嚷道：「说的是，说的是。我和你西天佛祖之前折辨去。」那十殿阴君送出，谢了地藏，回上翠云宫，著鬼使闭了幽冥关隘不题。

看那兩個行者飛雲奔霧，打上西天。Behold the two Pilgrims, speeding on cloud and racing through mist, fighting their way up to the Western Heaven.有詩為證。A poem bears witness to this.詩曰：The poem says:

看那两个行者飞云奔雾，打上西天。有诗为证。诗曰：

他兩個在那半空裡扯扯拉拉，抓抓掗掗，且行且鬥，直嚷至大西天靈鷲仙山雷音寶剎之外。High in midair the two of them tugged and grappled, clawed and clutched at each other, fighting as they flew and shouting all the way to the gates of the Thunderclap Monastery on Vulture Peak in the Great Western Heaven.早見那四大菩薩、八大金剛、五百阿羅、三千揭諦、比丘尼、比丘僧、優婆塞、優婆夷諸大聖眾，都到七寶蓮臺之下，淨聽如來說法。There they saw that the Four Great Bodhisattvas, the Eight Great Vajra Guardians, the five hundred arhats, the three thousand guardians of the faith, the bhikshunis and bhikshus, the upasakas and upasikas, and all the other holy multitudes had assembled beneath the Seven-Jeweled Lotus Throne, listening in silence as the Tathagata preached the Dharma.那如來正講到這：The Tathagata had just reached this passage:

他两个在那半空里扯扯拉拉，抓抓挜挜，且行且斗，直嚷至大西天灵鹫仙山雷音宝刹之外。早见那四大菩萨、八大金刚、五百阿罗、三千揭谛、比丘尼、比丘僧、优婆塞、优婆夷诸大圣众，都到七宝莲台之下，净听如来说法。那如来正讲到这：

概眾稽首皈依，流通誦讀之際，如來降天花普散繽紛，即離寶座，對大眾道：「汝等俱是一心，且看二心競鬥而來也。」As the whole assembly bowed their heads, took refuge, and circulated and recited the teaching, the Tathagata caused celestial flowers to descend in a many-colored shower; then he left his jeweled seat and said to the assembly, “You are all of one mind; now behold two minds coming here in strife.”

概众稽首皈依，流通诵读之际，如来降天花普散缤纷，即离宝座，对大众道：「汝等俱是一心，且看二心竞斗而来也。」

大眾舉目看之，果是兩個行者，吆天喝地，打至雷音勝境。The assembly raised their eyes and looked; sure enough, there were two Pilgrims, roaring at Heaven and bellowing at Earth as they fought their way into the holy precincts of Thunderclap.慌得那八大金剛上前擋住道：「汝等欲往那裡去？」這大聖道：「妖精變作我的模樣，欲至寶蓮臺下，煩如來為我辨個虛實也。」眾金剛抵擋不住，直嚷至臺下，跪於佛祖之前，拜告道：「弟子保護唐僧，來造寶山，求取真經，一路上煉魔縛怪，不知費了多少精神。The Eight Great Vajra Guardians hurried forward to bar their way, saying, “Where do you two think you are going?” The Great Sage replied, “A fiend has assumed my appearance and seeks to come beneath the jeweled lotus throne; we must trouble the Tathagata to determine which of us is false and which is true.” The Vajra Guardians could not hold them back, and they clamored straight to the foot of the throne, knelt before the Buddha Patriarch, and reported, “This disciple has protected the Tang Monk on his journey to this precious mountain to seek the true scriptures, subduing demons and binding monsters all along the road, at no small expenditure of strength and spirit.前至中途，偶遇強徒劫擄，委是弟子二次打傷幾人。Some while ago, midway on our journey, we happened upon a band of robbers, and it is true that this disciple wounded several of them for the second time.師父怪我趕回，不容同拜如來金身。My master blamed me and drove me away, refusing to let me come with him to bow before the Tathagata’s golden form.弟子無奈，只得投奔南海，見觀音訴苦。Helpless, this disciple could only seek refuge in the Southern Sea and lay his grievance before Guanyin.不期這個妖精假變弟子聲音、相貌，將師父打倒，把行李搶去。Unexpectedly, this fiend falsely assumed this disciple’s voice and appearance, struck my master down, and stole away the baggage.師弟悟淨尋至我山，被這妖假捏巧言，說有真僧取經之故。My junior brother Wujing tracked him to my mountain, where the fiend fabricated a cunning tale about having a true monk fetch the scriptures.悟淨脫身至南海，備說詳細。Wujing escaped to the Southern Sea and gave a full and detailed account of the matter.觀音知之，遂令弟子同悟淨再至我山。When Guanyin learned of it, she ordered this disciple to return to my mountain with Wujing.因此，兩人比併真假，打至南海，又打到天宮，又曾打見唐僧，打見冥府，俱莫能辨認。Thus the two of us matched ourselves to test the true from the false, fighting first to the Southern Sea, then to the Celestial Palace; we even fought before the Tang Monk and in the Underworld, but nowhere could anyone tell us apart.故此大膽輕造，千乞大開方便之門，廣垂慈憫之念，與弟子辨明邪正，庶好保護唐僧親拜金身，取經回東土，永揚大教。」大眾聽他兩張口一樣聲，俱說一遍，眾亦莫辨。Therefore we have boldly ventured into this sacred place, imploring you to open wide the gate of expedient mercy, extend your boundless compassion, and distinguish evil from righteous for this disciple, so that I may protect the Tang Monk until he bows in person before your golden form, obtains the scriptures, and returns to the Eastern Land, there to spread the Great Teaching forever.” The assembly heard the two identical mouths speak in the same voice, each telling the whole story, and none of them could distinguish between the two.惟如來則通知之，正欲道破，忽見南下彩雲之間，來了觀音，參拜我佛。The Tathagata alone knew the truth and was about to reveal it when suddenly Guanyin appeared amid colored clouds from the south and came to pay homage to the Buddha.

大众举目看之，果是两个行者，吆天喝地，打至雷音胜境。慌得那八大金刚上前挡住道：「汝等欲往那里去？」这大圣道：「妖精变作我的模样，欲至宝莲台下，烦如来为我辨个虚实也。」众金刚抵挡不住，直嚷至台下，跪于佛祖之前，拜告道：「弟子保护唐僧，来造宝山，求取真经，一路上炼魔缚怪，不知费了多少精神。前至中途，偶遇强徒劫掳，委是弟子二次打伤几人。师父怪我赶回，不容同拜如来金身。弟子无奈，只得投奔南海，见观音诉苦。不期这个妖精假变弟子声音、相貌，将师父打倒，把行李抢去。师弟悟净寻至我山，被这妖假捏巧言，说有真僧取经之故。悟净脱身至南海，备说详细。观音知之，遂令弟子同悟净再至我山。因此，两人比并真假，打至南海，又打到天宫，又曾打见唐僧，打见冥府，俱莫能辨认。故此大胆轻造，千乞大开方便之门，广垂慈悯之念，与弟子辨明邪正，庶好保护唐僧亲拜金身，取经回东土，永扬大教。」大众听他两张口一样声，俱说一遍，众亦莫辨。惟如来则通知之，正欲道破，忽见南下彩云之间，来了观音，参拜我佛。

我佛合掌道：「觀音尊者，你看那兩個行者，誰是真假？」菩薩道：「前日在弟子荒境，委不能辨。The Buddha joined his palms and said, “Venerable Guanyin, look at these two Pilgrims: which is true and which is false?” The Bodhisattva replied, “The other day, in this disciple’s humble domain, I truly could not tell them apart.他又至天宮、地府，亦俱難認。They also went to the Celestial Palace and the Underworld, but there too no one could recognize them.特來拜告如來，千萬與他辨明辨明。」如來笑道：「汝等法力廣大，只能普閱周天之事，不能遍識周天之物，亦不能廣會周天之種類也。」菩薩又請示周天種類。I have come especially to report the matter to the Tathagata and beg you by all means to distinguish them clearly.” The Tathagata smiled and said, “Though your powers are vast and you can survey all affairs beneath Heaven, you cannot recognize every creature beneath Heaven, nor are you acquainted with all the species beneath Heaven.” The Bodhisattva then asked what species existed beneath Heaven.如來才道：「周天之內有五仙：乃天、地、神、人、鬼。Only then did the Tathagata say, “Within the compass of Heaven there are five kinds of immortals: celestial, earthly, divine, human, and ghostly.有五蟲：乃蠃、鱗、毛、羽、昆。There are also five kinds of creatures: naked, scaled, furred, feathered, and crawling.這廝非天、非地、非神、非人、非鬼，亦非蠃、非鱗、非毛、非羽、非昆。This wretch is neither celestial, earthly, divine, human, nor ghostly; neither naked, scaled, furred, feathered, nor crawling.又有四猴混世，不入十類之種。」菩薩道：「敢問是那四猴？」如來道：「第一是靈明石猴，通變化，識天時，知地利，移星換斗；There are, moreover, four kinds of monkey that sow confusion in the world and belong to none of these ten classes.” The Bodhisattva asked, “May I ask which four monkeys these are?” The Tathagata replied, “The first is the Intelligent Stone Monkey, who understands transformations, knows the seasons of Heaven and the advantages of Earth, and can move the stars and shift the constellations;第二是赤尻馬猴，曉陰陽，會人事，善出入，避死延生；the second is the Red-Rumped Horse Monkey, who understands yin and yang, comprehends human affairs, is skilled in coming and going, and can avoid death and prolong life;第三是通臂猿猴，拿日月，縮千山，辨休咎，乾坤摩弄；the third is the Long-Armed Ape, who can seize the sun and moon, compress a thousand mountains, discern good and evil fortune, and manipulate Heaven and Earth;第四是六耳獼猴，善聆音，能察理，知前後，萬物皆明。the fourth is the Six-Eared Macaque, who is keen of hearing, can perceive principles, knows what came before and what will follow, and understands all things.此四猴者，不入十類之種，不達兩間之名。These four monkeys belong to none of the ten classes, nor are their names recorded between Heaven and Earth.我觀假悟空乃六耳獼猴也。I perceive that the false Wukong is a Six-Eared Macaque.此猴若立一處，能知千里外之事；If this monkey stands in one place, he can know what happens a thousand li away;凡人說話，亦能知之。he can also know whatever ordinary people say.故此善聆音，能察理，知前後，萬物皆明。Thus he is keen of hearing, can perceive principles, knows what came before and what will follow, and understands all things.與真悟空同像同音者，六耳獼猴也。」The creature identical to the true Wukong in both appearance and voice is the Six-Eared Macaque.”

我佛合掌道：「观音尊者，你看那两个行者，谁是真假？」菩萨道：「前日在弟子荒境，委不能辨。他又至天宫、地府，亦俱难认。特来拜告如来，千万与他辨明辨明。」如来笑道：「汝等法力广大，只能普阅周天之事，不能遍识周天之物，亦不能广会周天之种类也。」菩萨又请示周天种类。如来才道：「周天之内有五仙：乃天、地、神、人、鬼。有五虫：乃蠃、鳞、毛、羽、昆。这厮非天、非地、非神、非人、非鬼，亦非蠃、非鳞、非毛、非羽、非昆。又有四猴混世，不入十类之种。」菩萨道：「敢问是那四猴？」如来道：「第一是灵明石猴，通变化，识天时，知地利，移星换斗；第二是赤尻马猴，晓阴阳，会人事，善出入，避死延生；第三是通臂猿猴，拿日月，缩千山，辨休咎，干坤摩弄；第四是六耳猕猴，善聆音，能察理，知前后，万物皆明。此四猴者，不入十类之种，不达两间之名。我观假悟空乃六耳猕猴也。此猴若立一处，能知千里外之事；凡人说话，亦能知之。故此善聆音，能察理，知前后，万物皆明。与真悟空同像同音者，六耳猕猴也。」

那獼猴聞得如來說出他的本像，膽戰心驚，急縱身，跳起來就走。When the macaque heard the Tathagata reveal his true form, his heart quaked with terror; he sprang up at once and tried to flee.如來見他走時，即令大眾下手。Seeing him make his escape, the Tathagata immediately ordered the assembly to seize him.早有四菩薩、八金剛、五百阿羅、三千揭諦、比丘僧、比丘尼、優婆塞、優婆夷、觀音、木叉，一齊圍繞。The Four Bodhisattvas, Eight Vajra Guardians, five hundred arhats, three thousand guardians of the faith, bhikshus, bhikshunis, upasakas, upasikas, Guanyin, and Mucha instantly surrounded him.孫大聖也要上前，如來道：「悟空休動手，待我與你擒他。」那獼猴毛骨悚然，料著難脫，即忙搖身一變，變作個蜜蜂兒，往上便飛。Great Sage Sun was about to rush forward as well, but the Tathagata said, “Wukong, do not strike; let me capture him for you.” The macaque’s hair and bones bristled with fear, and, realizing that escape would be difficult, he hurriedly shook himself, changed into a honeybee, and flew upward.如來將金缽盂撇起去，正蓋著那蜂兒，落下來。The Tathagata tossed his golden alms bowl into the air; it covered the bee exactly and came down with it beneath.大眾不知，以為走了。The assembly did not understand and thought the creature had escaped.如來笑云：「大眾休言。The Tathagata laughed and said, “Say no more, all of you.妖精未走，見在我這缽盂之下。」大眾一發上前，把缽盂揭起，果然見了本像，是一個六耳獼猴。The fiend has not escaped; he is now beneath my alms bowl.” The whole assembly crowded forward and lifted the bowl, and there indeed they saw his true form: a Six-Eared Macaque.孫大聖忍不住，掄起鐵棒，劈頭一下打死，至今絕此一種。Unable to restrain himself, Great Sage Sun swung up his iron staff and killed him with a single blow to the head, and that species has been extinct ever since.如來不忍，道聲：「善哉！The Tathagata, in his compassion, cried, “Excellent!善哉！」大聖道：「如來不該慈憫他。Excellent!” The Great Sage said, “The Tathagata should not show him compassion.他打傷我師父，搶奪我包袱，依律問他個得財傷人，白晝搶奪，也該個斬罪哩。」如來道：「你自快去保護唐僧來此求經罷。」大聖叩頭謝道：「上告如來得知：那師父定是不要我，我此去，若不收留，卻不又勞一番神思？He wounded my master and stole my baggage; under the law, injuring a man for gain and committing robbery in broad daylight merit the death penalty.” The Tathagata said, “Hurry back now and protect the Tang Monk on his journey here to seek the scriptures.” The Great Sage kowtowed in thanks and said, “I beg the Tathagata to understand: that master is determined not to have me, and if I go back and he refuses to take me in, will that not put me to all this trouble again?望如來方便，把鬆箍兒咒念一念，褪下這個金箍，交還如來，放我還俗去罷。」如來道：「你休亂想，切莫放刁。I beg the Tathagata, as an act of grace, to recite the Spell for Loosening the Fillet, remove this golden band, and take it back, so that I may return to secular life.” The Tathagata said, “Do not indulge in foolish thoughts, and by no means turn unruly.我教觀音送你去，不怕他不收。I shall have Guanyin escort you back; then you need not fear that he will refuse you.好生保護他去，那時功成歸極樂，汝亦坐蓮臺。」Protect him well, and when your merit is complete and you return to the Land of Bliss, you too shall sit upon a lotus throne.”

那猕猴闻得如来说出他的本像，胆战心惊，急纵身，跳起来就走。如来见他走时，即令大众下手。早有四菩萨、八金刚、五百阿罗、三千揭谛、比丘僧、比丘尼、优婆塞、优婆夷、观音、木叉，一齐围绕。孙大圣也要上前，如来道：「悟空休动手，待我与你擒他。」那猕猴毛骨悚然，料著难脱，即忙摇身一变，变作个蜜蜂儿，往上便飞。如来将金钵盂撇起去，正盖著那蜂儿，落下来。大众不知，以为走了。如来笑云：「大众休言。妖精未走，见在我这钵盂之下。」大众一发上前，把钵盂揭起，果然见了本像，是一个六耳猕猴。孙大圣忍不住，抡起铁棒，劈头一下打死，至今绝此一种。如来不忍，道声：「善哉！善哉！」大圣道：「如来不该慈悯他。他打伤我师父，抢夺我包袱，依律问他个得财伤人，白昼抢夺，也该个斩罪哩。」如来道：「你自快去保护唐僧来此求经罢。」大圣叩头谢道：「上告如来得知：那师父定是不要我，我此去，若不收留，却不又劳一番神思？望如来方便，把松箍儿咒念一念，褪下这个金箍，交还如来，放我还俗去罢。」如来道：「你休乱想，切莫放刁。我教观音送你去，不怕他不收。好生保护他去，那时功成归极乐，汝亦坐莲台。」

那觀音在傍聽說，即合掌謝了聖恩，領悟空，輒駕雲而去。Guanyin, who had been listening nearby, immediately joined her palms and gave thanks for the holy favor, then took Wukong and departed upon a cloud.隨後木叉行者、白鸚哥一同趕上。Mucha the Pilgrim and the white parrot followed close behind.不多時，到了中途草舍人家。Before long they reached the cottage where the travelers had lodged midway on their journey.沙和尚看見，急請師父拜門迎接。When Friar Sand saw them, he hurriedly asked his master to come to the door and bow in welcome.菩薩道：「唐僧，前日打你的，乃假行者六耳獼猴也。The Bodhisattva said, “Tang Monk, the one who struck you the other day was the false Pilgrim, the Six-Eared Macaque.幸如來知識，已被悟空打死。Fortunately, the Tathagata recognized him, and Wukong has killed him.你今須是收留悟空，一路上魔障未消，必得他保護你，才得到靈山，見佛取經。You must now take Wukong back; the demonic obstacles along your road have not yet been cleared, and only with his protection can you reach Ling Mountain, behold the Buddha, and obtain the scriptures.再休嗔怪。」三藏叩頭道：「謹遵教旨。」Do not be angry with him again.” Tripitaka kowtowed and said, “I shall reverently obey your holy command.”

那观音在傍听说，即合掌谢了圣恩，领悟空，辄驾云而去。随后木叉行者、白鹦哥一同赶上。不多时，到了中途草舍人家。沙和尚看见，急请师父拜门迎接。菩萨道：「唐僧，前日打你的，乃假行者六耳猕猴也。幸如来知识，已被悟空打死。你今须是收留悟空，一路上魔障未消，必得他保护你，才得到灵山，见佛取经。再休嗔怪。」三藏叩头道：「谨遵教旨。」

正拜謝時，只聽得正東上狂風滾滾，豬八戒背著兩個包袱，駕風而至。Just as he was bowing his thanks, they heard a wild wind rolling in from due east, and Zhu Bajie arrived riding upon it with two bundles on his back.獃子見了菩薩，倒身下拜道：「弟子前日別了師父，至花果山水簾洞尋取包袱，果見一個假唐僧、假八戒，都被弟子打死，原是兩個猴身。When the Idiot saw the Bodhisattva, he threw himself to the ground and bowed, saying, “After this disciple left Master the other day, I went to the Water-Curtain Cave on Flower-Fruit Mountain to recover the baggage, and there, sure enough, I found a false Tang Monk and a false Bajie; this disciple killed them both, and they proved to be two monkeys.卻入裡，方尋著包袱，當時查點，一物不少，卻駕風轉此。Then I went inside and at last found the baggage; I checked it on the spot, and not one thing was missing, so I rode the wind back here.更不知兩行者下落如何？」菩薩把如來識怪之事說了一遍。But I still do not know what became of the two Pilgrims.” The Bodhisattva related how the Tathagata had identified the fiend.那獃子十分歡喜，稱謝不盡。The Idiot was overjoyed and thanked her without end.師徒們拜謝了，菩薩回海。After master and disciples had bowed their thanks, the Bodhisattva returned to the Southern Sea.卻都照舊合意同心，洗冤解怒。All of them were once more united in purpose and heart, their grievances washed away and their anger dissolved.又謝了那村舍人家，整束行囊、馬匹，找大路而西。They thanked the people of the village cottage, put their baggage and horse in order, found the main road, and headed west.正是：And so it is:

正拜谢时，只听得正东上狂风滚滚，猪八戒背著两个包袱，驾风而至。呆子见了菩萨，倒身下拜道：「弟子前日别了师父，至花果山水帘洞寻取包袱，果见一个假唐僧、假八戒，都被弟子打死，原是两个猴身。却入里，方寻著包袱，当时查点，一物不少，却驾风转此。更不知两行者下落如何？」菩萨把如来识怪之事说了一遍。那呆子十分欢喜，称谢不尽。师徒们拜谢了，菩萨回海。却都照旧合意同心，洗冤解怒。又谢了那村舍人家，整束行囊、马匹，找大路而西。正是：

畢竟這去，不知三藏幾時得面佛求經，且聽下回分解。But in the end, when Tripitaka will behold the Buddha and obtain the scriptures remains unknown; listen to the explanation in the next chapter.
