The Good Hell That Was Lost

I dreamed that I lay in bed, out in a desolate, cold wilderness, beside Hell. All the cries of the ghosts were faint, yet orderly, blending with the roar of flames, the boiling of oil, and the trembling clang of iron pitchforks, forming a great, intoxicating music that proclaimed to the Three Realms: all is peaceful below.

A great man stood before me, beautiful, compassionate, his whole body radiant with great light — and yet I knew he was a devil.

'It is all over, it is all over!!』The poor ghosts have lost that good Hell!' he said, grieved and indignant, and then sat down and told me a story he knew.

'When heaven and earth turned the color of honey, that was the time the devil had conquered the gods of Heaven and seized the great power to rule over all.He took possession of the Heavenly Kingdom, took possession of the human world, and took possession of Hell as well.So he went in person to Hell, sat in the center, his whole body shining with great light, illuminating all the multitude of ghosts.

'Hell had by then long fallen into decay: the sword-trees had lost their gleam;the edges of the boiling oil no longer surged;the great mass of fire at times gave off no more than a wisp of blue smoke, and in the distance datura flowers had even begun to sprout — tiny blossoms, pale and pitiful. That was nothing to wonder at, for the ground had once been thoroughly scorched, and had naturally lost its fertility.

'The ghosts woke in the cold oil and lukewarm fire, and by the devil's radiance saw the small flowers of Hell, pale and pitiful; greatly bewitched, they suddenly remembered the human world, and brooded in silence for who knows how many years, until at last, all together, they turned toward the human world and let out one desperate cry against their prison.

Mankind rose at once in response, took up the cause of justice, and did battle with the devil.滿The clamor of battle filled the Three Realms, far surpassing thunder.使At last, through great strategy and a great net cast wide, they forced the devil himself to flee from Hell. The final victory was that even upon the gate of Hell was raised the banner of mankind!

While the ghosts were cheering all together, mankind's envoy sent to set Hell in order had already arrived in Hell, sat in the center, and with human majesty shouted commands at all the multitude of ghosts.

'And when the ghosts once again let out a desperate cry against their prison, they had thereby already become traitors to mankind, and received the punishment of eternal sinking, being moved into the very center of the sword-tree forest.

'Mankind thus came to hold complete and mighty authority over Hell, an awesome power even greater than the devil's.Mankind then set about restoring what had fallen into decay, first granting Ox-Head and A-Pang the finest fodder as their stipend;使and moreover, added firewood and stoked the flames, sharpened the mountain of knives, so that the whole of Hell took on a new aspect, washing away entirely its former air of decay.

'The datura flowers withered at once. The oil boiled just as before;the knives were just as sharp;the fire was just as hot;the multitude of ghosts groaned just as before, writhed just as before, until they no longer even had leisure to remember the good Hell they had lost.

……。'This was mankind's success, and the ghosts' misfortune……

'Friend, you are beginning to suspect me.Yes — you are a man!……。』I shall go now and seek out wild beasts and evil demons……'

What it’s about

A dream in which the devil tells the dreamer a story. He is lying on a bed in a cold waste beside hell, where the ghosts' cries are low but orderly and chime with the roar of the flames, the boiling of the oil and the shaking of the steel forks, making a music that announces to the three realms that all is at peace below ground. A great figure stands in front of him — beautiful, merciful, shining all over — and the dreamer knows it is the devil. Everything is over, the devil says bitterly: the poor ghosts have lost that good hell of theirs. Then he sits down and explains.

When heaven and earth were honey-coloured the devil beat the gods and took heaven, the human world and hell together, and came down to sit in the middle of hell in his own light. Hell by then had gone to seed: the sword-trees had lost their glitter, the boiling oil no longer surged at the edges, the great fires gave off nothing but blue smoke, and small pale mandala flowers had begun to come up at the far end — no wonder, since the ground above had been burned over and had lost its fertility. Waking in the cooling oil, the ghosts saw those pitiful little flowers by the devil's light, remembered the world of men, brooded for who knows how many years, and screamed their revolt against hell. Mankind answered, took up their cause and fought the devil, filled the three realms with the noise of it and at last drove him out; the human banner went up over hell's gate. And while the ghosts were still cheering, mankind's Commissioner for the Reordering of Hell had already taken the seat in the middle and was shouting them down. The next revolt-cry made them traitors, punished by sinking forever in the sword-tree forest; the fires were built up, the knife-mountain honed, the ox-headed guards given the best fodder, the mandala flowers scorched away — until the ghosts had no leisure left to remember the good hell they had lost. This is mankind's success, says the devil, and the ghosts' misfortune. Friend, you are suspicious of me. Yes — you are human. I shall go and look for wild beasts and evil spirits instead.

When it was written 背景

Dated 16 June 1925. Lu Xun supplies the occasion himself in his preface to the English translation: a few eloquent, ruthless men who had not yet come into power told him with their faces and their tone of voice that this hell too would be lost, and he wrote the piece. Read that way it is the most political page in the book — a fable about liberators who take over the machinery and then run it harder than its owners did. The vocabulary is the only real obstacle: it is Buddhist hell furniture (劍樹, 沸油, 牛首阿旁, 曼陀羅花, 三界) inside a plain narrative frame, so look the nouns up once and then read straight through, because the sentences themselves are simple.
