死火 Dead Fire

I dreamt I was racing among ice mountains.

These were tall, towering ice mountains, reaching up to a frozen sky above, where frozen clouds spread thick, piece upon piece like fish scales. At the foot of the mountains was a forest of ice trees, their branches and leaves all shaped like pine and fir.Everything was ice-cold, everything was blue-white.

But suddenly I fell into an ice ravine.

Above, below, on every side, all was ice-cold, blue-white.Yet upon all that blue-white ice, there were countless red shadows, tangled together like a coral net.I looked down at my feet, and there was a flame there.

This was a dead flame. It had a blazing shape, yet it did not waver in the least; its whole body was frozen solid, like a branch of coral, and at its tip there was still congealed black smoke, making me suspect it had just come from a house of fire, and so was scorched dry.使Thus reflected on the four ice walls, and reflecting upon one another besides, it turned into innumerable shadows, making this ice ravine take on the color of red coral.

Ha ha!

When I was young, I already loved to watch the spray dashed up by swift boats, the fierce flames spouted from great furnaces. Not only did I love to watch them, I wanted to see them clearly.Unfortunately they were all forever shifting and changing, never taking on a fixed form.Though I gazed and gazed again, they never left behind any trace of a definite shape.

Dead flame, now at last I have got hold of you!

I picked up the dead flame, and just as I was about to look at it closely, that cold air had already made my fingertips burn;but still I endured it, and stuffed it into the middle of my clothes pocket. On every side of the ice ravine, at once, everything turned completely blue-white.I walked along, all the while turning over in my mind some way to get out of the ice ravine.

From my body there spouted a wisp of black smoke, rising like an iron-wire snake.滿On every side of the ice ravine, at once again, red flames came flowing everywhere, like a great gathering of fire, and surrounded me.穿I looked down, and the dead flame had already caught fire, had burned through my clothes, and was flowing onto the icy ground.

"Ah, friend!。』You, with your warmth, have startled me awake," it said.

I hastily greeted it, and asked its name.

,』,『"I was originally abandoned in this ice ravine," it answered, not answering my question at all. "Those who abandoned me have long since perished, utterly vanished.I too have been frozen by the ice nearly to death. If you do not give me your warmth, and let me burn again, before long I too must perish."

Your waking gladdens me.I am just now thinking of a way to get out of this ice ravine;使。』I am willing to carry you along with me, so that you will never again freeze solid, and may burn forever."

"Ah, ah!!』Then I shall burn myself out!"

Your burning out — that I would regret.便。』So I shall leave you behind, still here."

"Ah, ah!!』Then I shall freeze and perish!"

?』"Then what is to be done?"

?』"But you yourself — what will you do?" it asked in return.

……。』"I have already said: I mean to get out of this ice ravine……"

!』"Then better that I burn myself out!"

Suddenly it leapt up, like a red comet, and together with me went out through the mouth of the ice ravine.A great stone chariot came suddenly rushing up, and in the end I was crushed to death beneath its wheels, but I still had time to see that chariot plunge into the ice ravine.

"Ha ha!!』仿You will never again meet with a dead flame!" I said, laughing triumphantly, as though this were just what I wished.

What it’s about

The first of the dreams, and the sharpest image in the book. The dreamer is running among ice mountains that reach an ice sky, under frozen clouds scaled like a fish, past ice forests with branches like pine and fir; everything is cold and everything is blue-white. Then he falls into an ice valley, and across all the blue-white ice there are countless red shadows tangled like a net of coral. At his feet is a flame. It is dead fire: it has the shape of blazing and does not move at all, frozen right through, branched like coral, with congealed black smoke at the tip as though it had just come out of a burning house and been scorched — and it is thrown back off the ice walls into innumerable copies until the whole valley is coral red.

He picks it up, meaning to look at it closely; the cold of it scorches his fingers, and he pushes it inside his coat anyway. His own warmth wakes it, and it burns through his clothes and runs out onto the ice, and the two of them talk. It was abandoned in this valley by people long since destroyed, and it is nearly frozen out; without warmth it will die. He offers to carry it away so that it may burn forever — then I shall burn myself out, it says. He offers to leave it where it is — then I shall freeze to death. What then? And the fire turns the question round: what about you? He repeats that he means to get out of the ice valley, and the fire chooses: then I would rather burn out. It leaps up like a red comet and carries him out through the mouth of the valley, where a great stone cart runs him down — but he is in time to see the cart go over the edge into the ice, and he laughs, delighted: now you will never meet the dead fire again.

When it was written 背景

Dated 23 April 1925, the first of the run of pieces that open with 我夢見 — 死火, 失掉的好地獄, 墓碣文, 頹敗線的顫動, 立論, 死後 — written across three months and best read in that order. It is the piece to hand a learner who wants to see what Lu Xun can do with description: the first third is almost pure image, built out of a small set of characters recombined (冰, 火, 靑白, 珊瑚, 燄), so it teaches its own vocabulary as it goes. The dialogue that follows is short, plain and entirely a dilemma — burn out or freeze out, with no third answer offered — and the ending, in which the dreamer is killed and laughs about it anyway, is the same joke the book makes in 復讎.
