The Pilgrims' Weapons Are Stolen by the Yellow-Lion Spirit

089Chapter 89

Now the several blacksmiths in the courtyard, exhausted by days of hard work, had all fallen asleep that night. When they rose at daybreak to resume forging, they found the three weapons gone from beneath the awning. Dumbfounded and alarmed, they searched everywhere.:「。」Just then the three princes came out from the palace to look. All the blacksmiths kowtowed and said, “Young lords, no one knows where the divine masters’ three weapons have gone.”

:「。」:「?」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「。」:「?」:「The young princes were terrified to hear this. “Perhaps our masters put them away last night,” they said, and hurried to the Baosha Pavilion. Seeing that the white horse was still beneath the gallery, they could not help calling, “Are the masters still asleep?” “They are awake,” said Sha Seng. He opened the door and let the princes in. When they saw no weapons there, they asked anxiously, “Did the masters bring all your weapons in?” Wukong sprang up and said, “We did not.” A prince said, “All three weapons disappeared in the night.” Bajie hastily scrambled up. “Is my rake there?” he asked. The young prince replied, “When we came out just now, we found everyone searching high and low without success. We feared that the masters had put them away, and so came to ask.。」:「“The masters’ treasures can grow and shrink at will; surely you have hidden them about you to tease your disciples.” Wukong said, “We truly did not take them in.。」“Let us all go and look.”

They went together to the awning in the courtyard, and sure enough, there was no trace of them.:「“It must have been these blacksmiths who stole them,” said Bajie.。」:「“Hand them over at once! Delay even a moment, and I’ll beat every one of you to death—to death!” Terrified, the blacksmiths kowtowed with tears streaming down their faces. “Grandfather, we have worked hard for days. We fell asleep last night, and when we rose at dawn, they were gone.“We are all mere mortals—how could we possibly have moved them?。」:「“We beg you, Grandfather, spare our lives! Spare our lives!” Wukong said nothing, but inwardly reproached himself: “The fault is ours. Once they had copied the designs, we should have kept the weapons at our sides. Why did we leave them lying here?。」:「“Those treasures give off radiant light. They must have attracted the attention of some villain, who stole them away under cover of night.” Bajie did not believe him. “What are you saying, brother?“This is such a peaceful realm, not some wilderness or remote mountain. How could any villain have come here?“The blacksmiths must have conceived a wicked scheme. They saw our weapons shining, recognized them as three treasures, slipped out of the prince’s residence in the night, gathered some men, and had them carried and dragged away.。」“Bring them here and beat them—beat them!” But the craftsmen merely kowtowed and swore their innocence.

:「Amid the commotion, the old prince came out. When he learned what had happened, he too went deathly pale. After pondering for a long while, he said, “The divine masters’ weapons are no ordinary things; even a hundred men or more could not budge them.“Moreover, my family has ruled this city for five generations. Without indulging in idle boasting, I may say that I enjoy some reputation for virtue abroad.“The soldiers, commoners, and craftsmen of this city all stand in considerable awe of my laws and discipline. They would certainly never dare harbor such treachery.。」:「“I beg the divine masters to reconsider.” Wukong laughed. “There is no need to reconsider, nor to keep falsely accusing the blacksmiths.殿?」:「“Let me ask Your Highness: are there any mountains, forests, or monsters around this prefectural city?” The prince replied, “There is much reason in the divine master’s question.“North of my city stands a mountain called Baotou Mountain, and on it is a cave called Hukou Cave.“People often say that immortals live in the cave; others say tigers and wolves, and still others say monsters.。」:「。」:「。」“I have never discovered the truth and do not know what actually dwells there.” Wukong laughed. “Say no more. Some villains from that quarter must have known these were treasures and stolen them away in the night.” He called, “Bajie, Sha Seng, stay here to protect Master and guard the city while old Sun goes to investigate.” He also told the blacksmiths not to let their furnaces go out, but to continue forging each weapon.

The splendid Monkey King took leave of Sanzang, gave a whistle, and vanished from sight; in an instant he had leapt onto Baotou Mountain. The city was only thirty li away, and he arrived in the blink of an eye.He went straight up to a peak and looked about. Sure enough, there was an air of demonry.Indeed:

As Wukong was looking, he suddenly heard voices behind the mountain.西He turned quickly and saw two wolf-headed monsters talking loudly as they walked northwestward.:「。」Wukong reckoned, “These must be monsters patrolling the mountain. Let old Sun follow and listen to what they say.” Making the hand sign and reciting a spell, he shook himself and changed into a butterfly. Spreading his wings, he fluttered and flitted straight after them.Indeed, his transformation was perfect:

He flew above the head of one of the monsters, drifting lightly as he listened to their conversation.:「One monster suddenly said, “Second Brother, our king has had a run of good fortune lately. Last month he obtained a beautiful woman, and has been enjoying himself with her in the cave;“and last night he acquired three weapons, truly priceless treasures.。」:「“Tomorrow he is holding a feast to celebrate the Rake Festival, and we shall all have our share of the enjoyment.” The other said, “We have had some luck too: we have these twenty taels of silver to buy pigs and sheep.“Now that we have reached the market northwest of here, let us first drink a few pots of wine.西綿?」“We can pad the account for the purchases, skim off two or three taels, and buy ourselves padded coats for the winter. Wouldn’t that be fine?” Talking and laughing, the two monsters stepped onto the main road and hurried along as swiftly as flight.

When Wukong heard about the Rake Festival, he was secretly delighted. He wanted to kill them, but after all, the matter was none of their doing; moreover, he had no weapon in his hand.He therefore flew ahead, resumed his true form, and planted himself at a crossroads.」,使When the monsters had nearly reached him, he spat a mouthful of magic spittle at them and uttered, “Om hum zha li!” Then, using the immobilizing spell, he froze the two wolf-headed spirits in place.Their eyes were wide open, but their mouths could not speak;rigid and upright, they stood fixed on both feet.He knocked them over, pulled open their clothes, and searched them. Sure enough, they had twenty taels of silver in a pouch fastened to the sash at their waists.」,」。Each also wore a pink-lacquered tally: on one was written “Diaozuan Guguai,” and on the other, “Guguai Diaozuan.”

The Great Sage took their silver, removed their tallies, and strode back to the prefectural city.At the prince’s residence he met the prince, Tang Seng, all the officials great and small, and the craftsmen, and related everything that had happened.:「Bajie laughed. “It must be because old Zhu’s treasure shines with such radiant splendor that they are buying pigs and sheep and preparing a feast to celebrate it.?」:「“But how are we to get at that monster now?” Wukong said, “The three of us brothers will all go.殿“This silver was meant for buying pigs and sheep. For now, give it to the craftsmen as a reward, and have His Highness find us several pigs and sheep.便。」:「。」“Bajie, you will change into Diaozuan Guguai, and I into Guguai Diaozuan. Sha Seng will disguise himself as a livestock dealer, and we shall enter Hukou Cave. When an opportunity presents itself, each of us will seize his weapon, destroy those evil monsters, and return to prepare for our journey.” Sha Seng laughed. “Excellent, excellent! We must not delay. Let us go at once.” The old prince followed the plan and ordered his steward to purchase seven or eight pigs and four or five dressed sheep.

The three took leave of their master and displayed their divine powers outside the city.:「?」:「使Bajie said, “Brother, I have never seen Diaozuan Guguai. How can I change into his likeness?” Wukong said, “Old Sun immobilized the monster back there, and he will not awaken until this time tomorrow.。……“I remember what he looks like. Stand still and let me teach you how to transform....。」“This goes thus and that goes so—and there you have his likeness.” The Idiot truly recited the spell while Wukong breathed a mouthful of immortal breath over him. In an instant he looked exactly like Diaozuan Guguai, and wore the pink tally at his waist.Wukong then changed into Guguai Diaozuan and likewise wore a tally at his waist.Sha Seng dressed himself as a livestock dealer.Together they drove the pigs and sheep onto the main road and headed straight for the mountain.

Before long they entered a hollow in the mountain, where they met another little monster, whose face and features were every bit as ferocious!Just look at him:

:「The monster carried a brightly lacquered invitation case under his left arm. Coming up to Wukong, he called, “Guguai Diaozuan, so you two are back??」:「?」:「?」:「“How many pigs and sheep did you buy?” “Can’t you see what we are driving?” said Wukong. The monster turned to Sha Seng. “Who is this?” Wukong replied, “The livestock dealer.“We still owe him a few taels of silver, so he has come home with us to collect them.?」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「。」:「。」“Where are you going?” The monster said, “I am going to Zhujie Mountain to invite the old great king to tomorrow morning’s feast.” Matching his familiar tone, Wukong asked, “How many guests are being invited altogether?” The monster replied, “The old great king will occupy the seat of honor. With our own king and all the chiefs, there will be over forty guests.” As they spoke, Bajie said, “Come on, come on! The pigs and sheep are scattering everywhere.” Wukong said, “Go and round them up while I ask to see his invitation.” Taking him for one of his own kind, the monster opened the case, took out the invitation, and handed it to Wukong.Wukong unfolded it and read:

When Wukong had finished reading, he handed it back to the monster. The monster replaced it in the case and went straight off toward the southeast.

:「?」:「Sha Seng asked, “Brother, what did the invitation say?” Wukong replied, “It was an invitation to the Rake Festival.』。“It was signed, ‘Your disciple and grandchild Huangshi bows his head a hundred times.’。」:「“The guest invited is his grandsire, the venerable Jiuling Yuansheng.” Sha Seng laughed. “Huangshi must be a golden-maned lion who has become a spirit.?」:「。」:「?」:「:『。』。」“But I wonder what sort of creature Jiuling Yuansheng is?” Hearing this, Bajie laughed. “He is old Zhu’s proper quarry.” Wukong asked, “How do you know he is your quarry?” Bajie replied, “The ancients said, ‘A mangy sow is forever chasing golden-maned lions.’ That is how I know he is old Zhu’s quarry.” Talking and laughing, the three drove the pigs and sheep onward until Hukou Cave came into view.Outside its gate could be seen:

As they gradually approached the entrance, they saw a motley crowd of monsters, large and small, playing beneath the flowering trees. When they suddenly heard Bajie shouting “Ho! Ho!” as he drove up the pigs and sheep, they all came out to welcome them.便Some seized the pigs and others the sheep, and together they bound all the animals.:「The commotion soon alerted the demon king inside. Leading a dozen or so lesser monsters, he came out and asked, “So you two are back??」:「“How many pigs and sheep did you buy?” Wukong replied, “Eight pigs and seven dressed sheep—fifteen head of livestock in all.“The pigs cost sixteen taels of silver, and the sheep nine.“We received twenty taels before, so five are still owing.。」:「。」:「。」:「“This is the dealer, who has followed us here to collect the money.” Hearing this, the demon king called, “Little ones, fetch five taels of silver and send him on his way.” Wukong said, “The dealer has come partly to collect his money, but also to see the splendid celebration.” The demon flew into a rage and cursed, “You lazy, meddlesome Diaozuan!西?」:「?」:「“Buying the livestock was all you had to do. Why did you tell an outsider anything about our celebration?” Bajie stepped forward and said, “Our lord has obtained a treasure that is truly the rarest marvel under Heaven. What harm can there be in letting him look?” The monster barked, “You too, Guguai, are detestable!?」:「“I obtained this treasure from the city of Yuhua Prefecture. If this dealer sees it, then goes to the prefecture and spreads the tale until it reaches the princes, what shall I do if they come looking for it?” Wukong replied, “My lord, this dealer comes from beyond the market northwest of here, far from the prefecture, and is not a man of that city. How would he go there to spread the tale?。」“Besides, he is hungry, and neither of us has eaten. There is food and wine ready in the cave; give him something to eat and then send him away.” Before he had finished speaking, a little monster fetched five taels of silver and handed them to Wukong.:「。」Wukong passed the silver to Sha Seng. “Dealer, take your money, and come with us to the back for something to eat.”

Plucking up his courage, Sha Seng entered the cave with Bajie and Wukong. When they reached the second hall, they saw, high upon a table in the center, a nine-pronged rake set up as an object of worship, truly dazzling to the eye.西At the eastern end leaned a gold-banded staff, and at the western end a demon-subduing staff.:「便。」The demon king followed them in and said, “Dealer, that shining object in the middle is the rake. Look if you wish, but when you leave, on no account tell anyone about it.” Sha Seng nodded and thanked him.

Ah!Indeed: when a thing sees its master, its master is certain to take it.Bajie had always been a rash and boorish fellow. The moment he saw the rake, he had no patience for further pretense. He rushed up, snatched it down, swung it in his hands, resumed his true form, unleashed his fighting technique, and raked straight at the monster’s face.Wukong and Sha Seng likewise dashed to the two ends of the hall, each seized his weapon and resumed his true form, and all three brothers attacked together in a frenzy.:「?」:「In alarm, the demon king quickly twisted aside and dodged them, then rushed to the rear and fetched a Siming spade, with a long shaft and a keen iron butt. Charging into the courtyard, he parried their three weapons and shouted fiercely, “Who are you, to resort to trickery and cheat me of my treasures?” Wukong cursed, “You thieving ball of fur!“Do you not recognize me?“We are the disciples of Tang Sanzang, the holy monk from the Eastern Land.“When we reached Yuhua Prefecture to exchange our travel rescript, its worthy prince had his three sons take us as masters and learn martial arts. We gave them our treasures as models so that weapons of the same design might be forged.“We left them in the courtyard, and you, thieving ball of fur, slipped into the city by night and stole them. Now you accuse me of using trickery to cheat you of your treasures!。」“Do not run away! We shall each treat you to a few strokes of these three weapons and let you taste them.” The demon raised his spade to meet them.In this battle they fought from the courtyard out through the front gate. See the three monks close in upon the single monster—what a deadly fight it was:

:「。」They battled for a long time on Baotou Mountain. Unable to withstand them, the demon shouted at Sha Seng, “Watch my spade!” Sha Seng twisted aside and dodged it.The demon seized the opening and fled, riding the wind southeastward toward the Xun quarter.:「Bajie stretched his legs to pursue him, but Wukong said, “Let him go for now.:『。』。」“As the old saying goes, ‘Do not pursue a desperate foe.’ Let us merely cut off his road home.” Bajie obeyed.

The three went straight to the cave entrance and killed every one of the hundred or so monsters there, great and small.鹿They proved to be tigers, wolves, striped wildcats, leopards, horses, deer, and mountain goats.使The Great Sage then used a spell to bring out all the valuables from the cave, together with the bodies of the assorted beasts they had killed and the pigs and sheep they had driven there.使Sha Seng gathered dry firewood and set it alight, while Bajie fanned the flames with his two ears, and in no time they burned the entire lair clean.Taking all the things they had brought out, they turned back toward the prefectural city.

At that hour the city gates were still open and the households had not yet retired. The old prince and his sons, together with Tang Seng, were waiting anxiously in the Baosha Pavilion when the three returned and dumped a whole courtyardful of dead beasts, pigs, sheep, and valuables with a clattering crash.:「。」殿Together they cried, “Master, we have returned victorious!” His Highness thanked them again and again.滿Elder Tang’s heart was filled with joy.:「。」 The three young princes knelt on the ground and bowed. Sha Seng helped them up and said, “Do not thank us yet. Come closer and look at these things.” A prince asked, “Where did all these come from?” Wukong laughed. “These tigers, wolves, striped wildcats, leopards, horses, deer, and mountain goats were all beasts that had become spirits.“After recovering our weapons, we fought our way out through the gate.使“The old demon was a golden-maned lion. Wielding a Siming spade, he fought us until nightfall, when he was defeated and fled for his life toward the southeast.。」“We did not pursue him, but instead cleared away his road home, killed this horde of monsters, searched out these belongings of his, and brought them back.” Hearing this, the old prince was both joyful and worried: joyful that they had returned victorious, but worried that the demon might come seeking revenge in days to come.:「殿Wukong said, “Set your mind at ease, Your Highness. I have considered everything carefully and made fitting arrangements.“We shall not depart until we have swept them away root and branch; we will certainly leave no future trouble behind.:『“When I went out at noon, I met a little monster with a blue face and red hair carrying an invitation. I looked at the card, which read: ‘Tomorrow morning, with due reverence, a feast of delicacies and wine shall be prepared to celebrate the splendid Rake Festival. We beg the honor of your presence across the mountain for a gathering.’Please keep this confidential; I shall be deeply grateful.。』』。Respectfully addressed to the honored presence of my ancestral grandsire, the Nine-Spirited Primal Sage.” It was signed, “Your disciple and grandson, Yellow Lion, kowtowing a hundred times.”。」That monster was defeated only just now; he is sure to go and confer with his grandsire, and tomorrow morning they will certainly come seeking revenge. I shall then clear them all out for you.” The old king thanked him and had the evening meal laid out. When master and disciples had finished eating, each retired to his sleeping quarters; of this no more need be said.

Now the monster did indeed flee southeastward to Bamboo-Joint Mountain. In that mountain was a cavern-blessed realm called Nine-Bend Coiling Cave. The Nine-Spirited Primal Sage who dwelt there was his grandsire. He traveled on the wind without stopping all night, reached the cave entrance around the fifth watch, knocked at the gate, and went in.:「?」:「。」:「A lesser monster saw him and said, “Great King, Green-Face brought your invitation last night. The Old Master kept him here until this morning, intending to accompany him to your Rake Banquet. Why have you come so very early to invite him in person?” The monster said, “It is a sorry tale, a sorry tale—the banquet cannot be held.” As he spoke, Green-Face came out from within and said, “Great King, what brings you here?。」The Old Great King will rise presently and come with me to the banquet.” The monster, flustered and distraught, merely waved his hand without speaking.

A little later the old monster arose and summoned him inside. The monster cast aside his weapon, fell prostrate in obeisance, and could not stop the tears streaming down his cheeks.:「?」:「The old monster said, “Worthy grandson, you sent an invitation yesterday, and I was just preparing to attend the banquet this morning. Why have you come in person, and why are you weeping in such distress?” Kowtowing, the monster said, “The night before last, your little grandson was strolling idly beneath the moon when I saw a radiance soaring into the sky from Yuhua Prefecture.I hurried over to look and found that it came from three weapons in the prince’s residence: a nine-toothed gold-inlaid rake, a precious staff, and a gold-banded cudgel.使』,Your little grandson immediately used magic to spirit them away, named the occasion the ‘Splendid Rake Banquet,’ and ordered my underlings to buy pigs, sheep, fruit, and other provisions, so that I might hold a celebratory feast and invite Ancestral Grandfather to enjoy the treasures and share in the merriment.Yesterday, after I sent Green-Face to deliver the invitation, Diaozuan and the others whom I had dispatched to buy pigs and sheep returned driving several animals and brought with them a traveling merchant who had come to collect his money. He insisted on seeing the banquet, but your little grandson feared that he would spread word of it outside and refused to let him look.He then said he was hungry and begged for food, so I told them to feed him in the rear.He went inside, saw the weapons, and claimed they were his.The three of them each snatched up a weapon and revealed their true forms: one was a monk with a hairy face and a mouth like the Thunder God’s, another was a monk with a long snout and great ears, and the third was a monk with a dark, ill-favored face.Without asking who was right or wrong, they raised a shout and began striking wildly.Your little grandson hastily fetched my Four-Brilliance Spade, pursued them, and fought them, demanding to know who they were that dared play such tricks.西忿They said they were disciples of the Tang Monk, sent from the Great Tang in the Eastern Land to the Western Heaven; while passing through the prefectural city to exchange their travel rescript, they had been detained by the princes to teach them martial arts, and their three weapons had been placed in the courtyard as models for copies, whereupon I stole them—hence their anger and the ensuing fight.I do not know the names of those three monks, but all of them possess great abilities.Your little grandson could not withstand all three alone, and so I fled in defeat to Ancestral Grandfather.。」I beg you to draw your blade in my aid, capture those monks, and avenge me, thereby showing a grandsire’s love for his grandson.”

:「Hearing this, the old monster pondered silently for a moment, then laughed and said, “So it was he.。」:「?」:「Worthy grandson, you have provoked the wrong man.” The monster asked, “Does Ancestral Grandfather know who he is?” The old monster replied, “The one with the long snout and great ears is Zhu Bajie;the one with the dark, ill-favored face is Monk Sha. Those two are manageable. The one with the hairy face and Thunder-God mouth is called Sun Xingzhe. That fellow truly possesses immense divine powers: five hundred years ago he wreaked havoc in the Celestial Palace, and even a hundred thousand heavenly soldiers could not capture him.便He makes a particular business of hunting people down—a constable who searches mountains, overturns seas, smashes caves, assaults cities, and courts disaster. How could you provoke him?。」No matter. I shall go with you, capture that rogue together with the princes of Yuhua, and let you vent your anger.” On hearing this, the monster kowtowed in thanks.

The old monster then mustered his grandsons Naoshi, Snow Lion, Suanni, Baize, Fuli, and Tuanxiang, each armed with a keen weapon; led by Yellow Lion, they all mounted fierce winds and headed straight for the region of Leopard-Head Mountain. They smelled smoke and fire assailing their nostrils and heard the sound of weeping.Looking closely, they saw that Diaozuan and Guguai were there crying out for their master and mourning him.:「?」:「The monster approached and shouted, “Are you the real Diaozuan, or a false one?” The two fiends fell to their knees and, with tears in their eyes, kowtowed, saying, “How could we be false?西At about this time yesterday, we took the silver to buy pigs and sheep; when we reached the main road west of the mountain, we met a monk with a hairy face and a mouth like the Thunder God’s. He spat at us, and at once our legs went weak, our tongues grew stiff, and we could neither speak nor move.He knocked us down, searched us and took the silver, then removed our badges. The two of us lay in a daze and did not awaken until just now. When we reached home, the fires were still smoking, and every building had been burned down.Neither our master nor any of the leaders, high or low, was to be seen. That is why we are here weeping brokenheartedly.。」We do not know how the fire started.”

When the monster heard this, his tears gushed like a spring; he stamped both feet, raised a cry that shook the heavens, and exclaimed bitterly, “Bald rogues!Utterly wicked—how could you commit so cruel a deed? You have burned my cave dwelling to the ground, burned my beauties to death, and wiped out my household, young and old.!」:「I am dying of rage, dying of rage!” The old monster told Naoshi to pull him over and said, “Worthy grandson, matters have come to this, and futile anguish will do no good.。」:「禿?」Conserve your full strength for now, and let us go into the prefectural city and capture those monks.” But the monster would not cease weeping and said, “Old Master, an estate such as mine was not built in a day. Now that those bald rogues have destroyed it utterly, what use have I for my life?” Breaking free, he rushed toward a rocky cliff to dash his head against it.Only after Snow Lion, Naoshi, and the others pleaded earnestly with him did he desist.

They then abandoned the place and all hurried toward the prefectural city.Soon a roaring wind and billowing fog could be heard drawing very near. The people of every suburb outside the city were so terrified that, dragging their sons and carrying their daughters, with no thought for their possessions, they all fled into the prefectural city and shut the gates behind them.:「。」Someone rushed into the royal residence crying, “Disaster! Disaster!” The princes, Tang Seng, and the others were taking their morning meal in the Baosha Pavilion; hearing the alarm, they came outside to inquire.:「。」:「?」:「The people said, “A band of monsters is nearing the city, making sand fly and stones roll, spewing fog and whipping up winds.” The old king exclaimed in alarm, “What are we to do?” Xingzhe laughed and said, “Set your minds at ease, set your minds at ease. The monster from Tiger’s-Mouth Cave was defeated yesterday and fled southeast to gather forces from someone called the Nine-Spirited Primal Sage; now they have come.My brothers and I will go out to meet them.。」Order all four gates closed and muster men to guard the city walls.” The princes duly gave orders to close the four gates and mustered men atop the walls, while they, their father, and Tang Seng directed the defenses from the gate tower, with banners blotting out the sun and cannon fire thundering to the heavens.Xingzhe and his two companions, half shrouded in cloud and half in mist, left the city to meet the enemy. And so it was that:

How this battle was ultimately won or lost is not yet known; listen to the explanation in the next chapter.

What it’s about

Wukong, Bajie and Sha Wujing disguise themselves to enter the yellow-lion spirit's weapons feast, where their stolen arms are displayed as trophies. The deception breaks into battle, and they recover cudgel, rake and staff while driving the demon from Tiger-Mouth Cave. The three princes see their teachers' methods tested beyond courtly demonstration: reconnaissance and coordinated fighting matter as much as spectacular technique.

The yellow lion flees to his ancestor, the nine-headed lion spirit of Nine-Bend Coil Cave. This elder gathers a wider clan of lion demons and counterattacks Jade-Flower County, capturing members of the royal household and threatening the pilgrims' new students. A theft motivated by vanity expands into a family war because kinship supplies refuge, troops and authority. Wukong's local victory therefore exposes a deeper hierarchy rather than completing the episode.

When it was written 背景

The weapons feast turns stolen objects into public claims of status; recovering them restores both practical capacity and reputation. Yet the yellow lion's appeal to an ancestor reveals that monsters, like gods and humans, inhabit networks of obligation. Learners should track 釘耙會, 偷, 老祖 and 九頭獅子. The shift from a relatively inexperienced thief to a many-headed patriarch sharply raises the scale, while the endangered princes connect their martial education to its first real civic responsibility: protecting the county rather than merely mastering forms.
