Monkey Reveals the Mouse-Demon's Heavenly Foster-Father

083Chapter 83

:「?」:「。」:「。」:「Now Sanzang had the demon escort him out of the cave. Sha Wujing came forward and asked, “Master, you have come out—but where is Elder Brother?” Bajie said, “He has a plan; he must have traded places to get Master out.” Pointing at the demon, Sanzang said, “Your elder brother is inside her belly.” Bajie laughed and said, “How filthy! What is he doing in her belly?。」:「。」Come out!” From inside, Wukong called, “Open your mouth and let me out.” The monster truly opened her mouth.:「!」Wukong made himself very small and crouched within her throat. Just as he was about to come out, he feared she might treacherously bite him, so he took out his iron staff, breathed an immortal breath upon it, and cried, “Change!” It changed into a little date-stone-shaped peg that propped open her upper jaw. With one bound he leapt out of her mouth, bringing the staff out with him; then he bent at the waist, resumed his original form and appearance, raised the staff, and struck. The demon at once drew her two precious swords and parried with a clang. What a fine battle the two fought on the mountaintop!

:「Seeing them locked in combat, Bajie muttered incessantly, blaming Wukong instead, and turned to Sha Wujing. “Brother,” he said, “Elder Brother is making needless trouble.滿Just now, when he was in her belly, why did he not swing his fists, beat her innards to a bloody pulp, tear open her belly, and crawl out, putting an end to the whole affair??」:「Why did he come out through her mouth and then fight her, allowing her to carry on so fiercely?” Sha Wujing said, “Quite so.Still, it was thanks to Elder Brother that Master was rescued from the depths of the cave, and now he is fighting the demon again.。」:「。」:「。」Let Master sit here by himself for the moment. You and I should take up our weapons, help Elder Brother, and bring the demon down.” Bajie waved his hand. “No, no, no. She has magic powers; we are no match for her.” Sha Wujing said, “What are you talking about? This concerns us all. Even if we are no match for her, at least a fart can add to the wind.”

:「。」使The fool’s enthusiasm was suddenly kindled. He pulled out his rake and cried, “Let’s go!” The two of them, forgetting all about their master, rose together on the wind and rushed forward, one wielding his rake and the other his precious staff, raining blows upon the demon. The demon was already unable to withstand Wukong alone; now that she saw the other two, how could she oppose them? She hastily turned, broke away, and fled.:「。」:「!」使Wukong shouted, “Brothers, after her!” Seeing them pressing close behind, the demon pulled the embroidered shoe from her right foot, breathed an immortal breath upon it, recited a spell, and cried, “Change!” It immediately assumed her own appearance and came dancing toward them with two swords. With a shake of her body, she turned into a gust of pure wind and went straight back. This time, too, she merely claimed that she had retreated to save her life because she could not defeat them—who could have known there was yet another trick to it?退And because Sanzang’s baleful star had not yet passed, when she reached the ornamental gateway before the cave, she saw the Tang Monk sitting there alone. She went up, seized him in her arms, snatched up the luggage, bit through the bridle reins, and spirited man and horse back inside. Of this, no more for now.

Meanwhile, Bajie saw an opening and struck the demon to the ground with his rake—only to find that it was an embroidered shoe.:「?」:「Wukong saw it and said, “You two fools! You should have stayed and watched over Master. Who asked you to come and help me?” Bajie said, “Sha Wujing, what did I tell you?I said we should not come.。」:「This monkey must have a nasty fit of madness in his head. We helped him subdue the demon, and all we get in return is his resentment.” Wukong said, “Where have you subdued the demon?使When she fought me yesterday, she fooled me with this very trick of leaving behind a shoe.。」Now that you have gone, who knows what has happened to Master? Let us hurry back and see.”

The three rushed back, and sure enough, Master was gone; the luggage and white horse had vanished with him.Bajie panicked and ran wildly this way and that, Sha Wujing searched before and behind, and Sun Wukong too grew anxious and irritable. As they searched, they saw half a bridle rein drooping beside the road.:「。」Wukong snatched it up. Unable to hold back his tears, he cried aloud, “Master! When I left, I bade farewell to man and horse; now I return and find only this piece of rope.” Truly: Seeing the saddle, one thinks of the noble steed; shedding tears, one longs for the dear departed. When Bajie saw him weeping, he could not help throwing back his head and laughing.:「?」:「Wukong cursed him. “You clod! Are you trying to provoke me again?” Bajie laughed once more. “Brother, that is not it. Master must have been spirited back into the cave by the demon.:『。』。」:「As the saying goes, ‘Nothing succeeds until the third attempt.’ You have entered the cave twice already; go in once more, and you are certain to rescue Master.” Wukong wiped away his tears and said, “Very well. Things having come to this, I have no choice; I shall go in again.。」You two have no luggage or horse to worry about now, so guard the cave entrance carefully.”

The Great Sage turned, leapt inside, and, without employing any transformation, kept his own true form.Indeed:

See how he halted his cloud’s radiance and went straight to the demon’s dwelling.Finding the gatehouse shut, he cared nothing for consequences, but swung his iron staff, smashed it open with one blow, and charged inside. The place was utterly silent, without a trace of anyone. The Tang Monk was nowhere to be seen beneath the eastern gallery. The tables and chairs in the pavilion, and all the household furnishings elsewhere, had vanished to the last item.As it turned out, her cave extended more than three hundred li in every direction and contained a great many demon lairs. The previous time, she had carried the Tang Monk here, where Wukong found him. This time, after carrying him off, she feared Wukong would come searching again, so she immediately moved elsewhere, and no one knew where she had gone.:「Wukong was so vexed that he stamped his feet and beat his chest, crying aloud, “Master! You are a Tang Sanzang made of ill fortune, a scripture pilgrim cast out of calamity itself.Alas!I know this road so well—how can you not be here??」:「。」Where, then, is old Sun to seek you?” While he was shouting and fretting, a fragrant breeze suddenly reached his nostrils. Regaining his composure, he said, “This incense smoke is drifting from the rear; perhaps she is back there.” He strode forward with his iron staff in hand, but when he went in to look, he still found no sign of movement. He saw only three rear-facing rooms. Near the back wall stood a carved lacquer altar table decorated with a dragon’s gaping mouth, and upon it was a large gilded incense burner from which richly fragrant smoke arose.」;Above it was enshrined a large tablet inscribed in golden characters: “The Seat of Our Honored Father, Heavenly King Li.”」。A little lower down was written: “The Seat of Our Honored Elder Brother, Third Prince Nezha.”滿At this sight Wukong was overjoyed. Abandoning his search for the demon and the Tang Monk, he shrank his iron staff into an embroidery needle and tucked it into his ear. Then he stretched out his hands, picked up both tablet and incense burner, mounted his cloud, and went straight out the gate. When he reached the cave entrance, he chuckled and guffawed without cease.

:「?」:「。」:「?」:「。」」、「」。Hearing him, Bajie and Sha Wujing left their posts at the entrance and came to meet him. “Brother, you are so delighted—have you rescued Master?” Wukong laughed. “There is no need for us to rescue him. We need only demand him from this tablet.” Bajie said, “Brother, this tablet is not a demon, nor can it speak. How can you demand anyone from it?” Wukong set it on the ground and said, “Look.” Sha Wujing stepped forward and saw written upon it, “The Seat of Our Honored Father, Heavenly King Li,” and “The Seat of Our Honored Elder Brother, Third Prince Nezha.”:「?」:「Sha Wujing asked, “What does this mean?” Wukong said, “This is what the demon’s household worships.I broke into her dwelling and found neither person nor object there—only this tablet.I reckon she is Heavenly King Li’s daughter and the Third Prince’s younger sister, who yearned for the mortal world, descended to earth, disguised herself as a fiend, and carried off our master. If we do not demand him from Li, from whom should we demand him?。」:「:『。』You two guard this place for now. Old Sun will take this memorial tablet straight to Heaven and lodge an imperial complaint before the Jade Emperor, making the Heavenly King and his sons return my master.” Bajie said, “Brother, as the saying goes, ‘He who falsely accuses another of a capital crime incurs that same crime.’ You must have the facts in proper order before you proceed.Besides, is an imperial complaint something to be made lightly??」:「。」:「Tell me first: how will you accuse him?” Wukong laughed. “I have a plan. I shall use this tablet and incense burner as evidence, and prepare a written indictment as well.” Bajie asked, “What will you write in it?。」Recite it and let me hear.” Wukong said:

:「Hearing his words, Bajie and Sha Wujing were delighted. “Brother,” they said, “your complaint is well founded; you are sure to prevail. But be sure to return quickly.。」:「。」If you delay, the demon may take Master’s life.” Wukong said, “I shall be quick, I shall be quick. I will be back in the time it takes a meal to cook—nay, in the time it takes tea to boil.”

The Great Sage took the tablet and incense burner, sprang into the air, mounted an auspicious cloud, and went straight to the Southern Gate of Heaven. The Mighty Heavenly King and the Heavenly King Who Protects the Realm, then guarding the gate, saw Wukong and each bowed low with hands held respectfully behind his back. Not daring to bar his way, they let him enter. :「?」殿He went straight to the Hall of Perfect Light, where the four great Celestial Masters Zhang, Ge, Xu, and Qiu came forward and saluted him. “What brings the Great Sage here?” they asked. Wukong replied, “I have a written complaint and mean to accuse two people.” The Celestial Masters were startled. “Who knows whom this rogue means to accuse now?” With no other recourse, they led him to the Hall of Divine Mists, reported the matter, and received an edict summoning him inside.Wukong set down the tablet and incense burner, performed his obeisance before the throne, and presented his written complaint.Immortal Elder Ge received it and spread it upon the imperial desk.西The Jade Emperor read it from beginning to end and, seeing all that it alleged, endorsed the original complaint as an imperial edict. He commanded the Western Elder, the Great White Planet Venus, to receive the edict and proceed to the Cloud-Tower Palace to summon Pagoda-Bearing Heavenly King Li into his presence.:「Wukong stepped forward and memorialized, “I beg the Lord of Heaven to punish him severely;。」:「。」:「?」:「。」otherwise further trouble will arise.” The Jade Emperor added, “The plaintiff shall go as well.” Wukong said, “Old Sun too?” The four Celestial Masters said, “His Majesty has issued his decree. You may go with the Great White Planet.”

Wukong therefore followed the Great White Planet, mounted his cloud, and soon arrived at the Cloud-Tower Palace. This, as it turned out, was the Heavenly King’s residence, known as the Cloud-Tower Palace. At the palace gate, the Great White Planet saw a boy standing in attendance.:「。」The boy recognized him and went inside to announce, “Lord Great White Planet Venus has arrived.” The Heavenly King then came out to welcome him.Seeing that the Great White Planet carried an imperial edict, he immediately ordered incense to be burned. But when he turned and saw Wukong following them inside, the Heavenly King at once grew angry. Why, you ask, did he grow angry? When Wukong had wreaked havoc in Heaven years before, the Jade Emperor had appointed the Heavenly King Grand Marshal for the Subjugation of Demons, and Prince Nezha God of the Three Altars and Oceanic Assembly, commanding the celestial troops in their campaign to capture and subdue Wukong; yet after many battles they had failed to defeat him.The resentment left by that defeat five hundred years before still made the Heavenly King somewhat hostile toward him, and that was why he grew angry.:「?」:「。」:「?」:「Unable to contain himself, he asked, “Old Chang Geng, what edict have you brought?” The Great White Planet replied, “It concerns a complaint that Great Sage Sun has lodged against you.” The Heavenly King was already vexed; at the word “complaint,” he flew into a thunderous rage. “What is he accusing me of?” The Great White Planet answered, “Of harboring a false demon who abducts and confines people.。」Burn incense and open the edict yourself to read it.” Fuming, the Heavenly King set out an incense table and faced the sky to offer thanks for the imperial favor.:「。」:「After bowing, he unfolded the edict and read how matters stood. In fury, he struck the incense table with his hand. “That monkey has accused the wrong man!” The Great White Planet said, “Calm your anger.。」:「The memorial tablet and incense burner are before the throne as evidence, and he says the demon is your own daughter.” The Heavenly King replied, “I have only three sons and one daughter. My eldest son is named Jinzha; he attends the Tathagata and serves as a vanguard guardian of the Dharma. My second son is named Mucha; he follows Guanyin at the Southern Sea as her disciple. My third son is named Nezha; he remains at my side and attends court each day to guard the imperial presence. My one daughter is only seven years old. Her name is Zhenying, and she does not yet understand worldly affairs. How could she possibly become a demon? If you do not believe me, have her brought out and see for yourself. This monkey is truly outrageous.Let alone that I am a founding hero of Heaven, invested with authority to execute first and report afterward—even an ordinary mortal below may not be falsely accused.:『。』」:「。」The law says, ‘False accusation increases the penalty by three degrees.’” He called to his subordinates, “Bind this monkey with the Demon-Binding Cord!” The Colossal Spirit God, the Fish-Belly General, and the mighty yaksha commanders arrayed in the courtyard surged forward together and bound Wukong.:「The Great White Planet said, “Heavenly King Li, do not bring disaster upon yourself!。」:「I received the decree with him before the imperial presence and came to summon you. That cord of yours is exceedingly heavy; if you bind him too tightly and hurt him, you will cause a grievance.” The Heavenly King said, “Great White Planet, how can such a fraudulent and vexatious accuser be tolerated?。」:「Sit here for a moment while I fetch my Demon-Beheading Saber and cut off this monkey’s head; afterward I shall accompany you to report back before the throne.” Seeing him go for the saber, the Great White Planet trembled with alarm and said to Wukong, “You have bungled this affair. Is an imperial complaint something to be lodged lightly??」:「You did not even investigate the facts, but acted recklessly in this fashion. If it costs you your life, what are we to do?” Wukong showed no fear at all, but answered with a beaming smile, “Set your mind at ease, old officer. Nothing will happen.。」This is how old Sun always does business: first I lose, and then I win.”

Before he had finished speaking, the Heavenly King swung his saber and brought it down at Wukong’s head.:「。」But the Third Prince had already rushed forward and blocked the Demon-Beheading Saber with his sword, crying, “Father King, calm your anger!” The Heavenly King turned deathly pale with fright.

Ah!退When a father sees his son block his saber with a sword, he should simply rebuke him and order him back; why, then, did the Heavenly King turn deathly pale? When this son was born, the character “Ne” appeared on his left palm and the character “zha” on his right; hence he was named Nezha. When the prince was only three days old, he went down into the sea to cleanse himself and caused trouble: he trampled down the Crystal Palace, seized a flood dragon, and meant to pull out its sinews for a sash. When the Heavenly King learned of it, he feared future calamity and wanted to kill him.In a fury, Nezha took a knife, cut away his flesh to return it to his mother, and carved out his bones to return them to his father, thus returning his father’s essence and his mother’s blood.西His lone spirit went straight to the Western Land of Utmost Bliss to appeal to the Buddha.:「!」The Buddha was expounding scripture to the bodhisattvas when a cry of “Save me!” came from among the banners and jeweled canopies. Looking with his wisdom-eye, the Buddha knew it was Nezha’s soul. He made bones for him from green lotus roots and clothes from lotus leaves, then recited the true spell for restoring the dead to life, and Nezha was brought back to life.Employing his divine power, he subdued by his dharma the demons of ninety-six caves, and his supernatural abilities became immense.Later he sought to kill the Heavenly King and avenge the wrong of having his bones carved out.Helpless, the Heavenly King appealed to our Buddha, the Tathagata. The Tathagata, esteeming harmony above all, bestowed upon him an exquisite, translucent, wish-fulfilling golden reliquary pagoda. Each tier of the pagoda held a Buddha and shone with brilliant light. He had Nezha acknowledge the Buddha as his father, thereby resolving the enmity between them. This is why Li is called the Pagoda-Bearing Heavenly King.Today, while resting at home, he had not been holding the pagoda; fearing that Nezha might intend to take revenge, he therefore turned deathly pale with fright.

:「?」:「。」:「?」:「He immediately reached back, took the golden pagoda from its stand, held it in his hand, and asked Nezha, “My son, why did you block my saber with your sword? What have you to say?” Nezha cast aside his sword, kowtowed, and said, “Father King, you do indeed have a daughter in the lower world.” The Heavenly King said, “My son, I fathered only the four of you siblings. Where could I have another daughter?” Nezha replied, “Have you forgotten, Father King? That daughter was originally a demon.Three hundred years ago, after she became a monster, she stole and consumed the Tathagata’s fragrant flowers and precious candles on Vulture Peak. The Tathagata dispatched you and me with celestial troops to capture her.:『鹿。』Once she was caught, she ought to have been beaten to death, but the Tathagata said, ‘One who fills a pond to raise fish will never angle for them; one who feeds deer deep in the mountains hopes for long life.’ So her life was spared at the time.Mindful of this kindness, she honored the Heavenly King as her father and his son as her elder brother, and below she set up their spirit tablets and tended offerings of incense to them.Unexpectedly, she later became a demon again and abducted Tang Seng; but Sun Xingzhe tracked down her lair, found the tablets, and used them as evidence to bring an imperial charge.。」:「She is my sworn daughter by grace, not my own sister by blood.” Hearing this, the Heavenly King started in alarm and said, “Son, I had truly forgotten.?」:「What is she called?” The Prince replied, “She has three names: by her original form and origin, she is called the Golden-Nosed White-Haired Rat Spirit;because she stole fragrant flowers and precious candles, her name was changed to Half Guanyin;。」and now that she has been spared and sent to the lower world, she has changed it again and is called Lady Earth-Flow.”

Only then did the Heavenly King remember; he put down his precious pagoda and came personally to untie Xingzhe.:「Xingzhe at once turned obstinate and cried, “Who dares untie me?便。」退If you want me to go, carry me before His Majesty ropes and all; only then will old Sun win his case.” The Heavenly King’s hands went limp with panic, the Prince was left speechless, and all the generals withdrew in dismay. The Great Sage rolled on the ground and made a shameless scene, insisting that the Heavenly King go before His Majesty.便At his wits’ end, the Heavenly King begged the Gold Star to devise some expedient.:「:『。』The Gold Star said, “The ancients tell us, ‘In all things, allow some leeway.’ You handled the matter rather too harshly, first binding him and then trying to kill him. This monkey is a notorious rogue; what do you expect me to do with him now?。」 :「。」:「。」:「。」:「。」:「And by your son’s account, though she is a daughter by grace and not by blood, the bond is still longstanding and weighty; argue it however you will, some blame must attach to you.” The Heavenly King said, “Venerable Star, devise some expedient by which I may escape blame.” The Gold Star replied, “I too wish to reconcile you, but I have no favor to plead on your behalf.” The Heavenly King said, “You might remind him how you petitioned for his amnesty and official rank.” So the Gold Star truly stepped forward, laid a hand on Xingzhe, and said, “Great Sage, for the sake of my humble face, let them untie you so that we may go before His Majesty.” Xingzhe replied, “Old official, there is no need; I know how to roll, and can roll all the way there.” The Gold Star laughed and said, “You monkey, how utterly heartless you are!?」:「?」:「In former days I showed you some kindness; will you not oblige me in this trifling matter?” Xingzhe asked, “What kindness have you ever shown me?” The Gold Star replied, “When you were a monster on Huaguo Mountain, subduing tigers and dragons, violently striking your name from the registers of death, gathering a horde of demons and running wildly amok, Heaven wished to seize you; it was I who earnestly petitioned for an edict of amnesty, had you summoned to Heaven, and secured your appointment as Protector of the Horses.』。After you drank the Jade Emperor’s immortal wine, you were offered amnesty once more, again through my earnest petition, and were granted the title ‘Great Sage Equal to Heaven.’Then once more you failed to keep your place: you stole peaches and wine and pilfered Laozi’s elixir; after all that and more, you finally attained freedom from birth and death.?」:「:『。』Had it not been for me, how could you have come this far?” Xingzhe replied, “The ancients spoke truly: ‘When you die, do not share a grave with an old man.’ All you old fellows know how to do is rake up a man’s past. All I ever did was serve as Protector of the Horses and raise havoc in Heaven; there was nothing else of consequence.。」Very well, very well—for the sake of your venerable face, let him come and untie me himself.” Only then did the Heavenly King dare approach and release his bonds; he invited Xingzhe to dress and take the seat of honor, and they all came forward one by one to pay their respects.

:「Xingzhe turned to the Gold Star and said, “Well, old official?Did I not say I would lose first and win afterward? That is how a bargain is done.。」:「。」:「?」:「Hurry him along to see His Majesty; do not delay the rescue of my master.” The Gold Star said, “There is no hurry; after all this commotion, let us at least have a cup of tea before we go.” Xingzhe replied, “If you drink his tea, accept his private favor, let a culprit go, and slight the imperial decree, what punishment will you deserve?” The Gold Star said, “No tea, then, no tea.Now he is even turning his roguery on me.。」Li Tianwang, let us go—quickly, quickly.” But how could the Heavenly King dare go, when Xingzhe might invent something out of nothing, turn obstinate, and spout wild nonsense—how could he ever argue his way clear?便Having no alternative, he again entreated the Gold Star to propose some expedient.:「?」:「The Gold Star said, “I have one proposal; will you heed me?” Xingzhe replied, “For your sake I have overlooked the business of ropes and blades; what more have you to say?Speak, speak. If it is good, I will agree;。」:「if it is not, do not blame me.” The Gold Star said, “A single day’s lawsuit takes ten days to try.You lodged an imperial charge, claiming that the demon is the Heavenly King’s daughter; the Heavenly King says she is not; if you two go on arguing the matter endlessly before His Majesty, there will be no end to it.As I have said, one day in Heaven is a year in the lower world.?」:「During that year, with your master trapped in her cave, never mind marriage—if they should celebrate the birth of a child, she may even bear him a little monk; would that not ruin the great undertaking?” Xingzhe lowered his head and thought, “That is true. When I left Bajie and Sha Seng, I said I would return in no more time than rice takes to cook or tea to boil; after all this fuss, half a day has already passed. Am I not late??」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「Old official, if I follow your advice, how are we to report back on the decree?” The Gold Star said, “Have Li Tianwang muster troops and go down with you to subdue the demon, while I report back.” Xingzhe asked, “And what will you report?” The Gold Star replied, “I shall simply say that the plaintiff escaped and the defendant need not appear.” Xingzhe laughed. “Very fine! I relent for your sake, and you turn around and call me an escaped plaintiff.。」:「。」:「Have him muster his troops and wait outside the Southern Heavenly Gate; I will first return with you to report and close the case.” The Heavenly King said fearfully, “If he goes there and says anything against me, I shall seem a minister who deceives his sovereign.” Xingzhe replied, “What sort of man do you take old Sun for?,『』,?」I too am a true man: ‘Once a word is spoken, even four horses cannot overtake it.’ How could I smear you with foul accusations?” The Heavenly King immediately thanked Xingzhe.Xingzhe returned with the Gold Star to report on the decree. The Heavenly King mustered the celestial troops under his command and went straight out beyond the Southern Heavenly Gate.

:「The Gold Star and Xingzhe returned before the Jade Emperor and reported, “The creature who abducted Tang Seng is a Golden-Nosed White-Haired Rat Spirit, who falsely set up spirit tablets for the Heavenly King and his son.。」The Heavenly King now knows of it and has already mustered troops to capture the monster; we beg the Celestial Venerable to pardon his fault.” The Jade Emperor already knew the truth of the matter and graciously decreed that no charges be pursued.Xingzhe immediately sped back on his cloud to the Southern Heavenly Gate, where he found the Heavenly King and the Prince waiting with the celestial troops arrayed in ranks.Ah!How those divine generals came amid rolling winds and surging mists! They received the Great Sage, then all descended from the clouds together and soon reached Xiankong Mountain.

Bajie and Sha Seng were waiting with anxious eyes when they saw Xingzhe arrive with the celestial troops.:「。」:「The Idiot went forward and saluted the Heavenly King, saying, “We have put you to much trouble, much trouble indeed.” The Heavenly King replied, “Marshal Tianpeng, you do not know the whole story.Only because my son and I accepted one stick of incense from her did that demon presume upon the bond and imprison your master.Forgive us for arriving late.So this is Xiankong Mountain??」:「But in which direction does the entrance to her cave face?” Xingzhe replied, “I know these paths thoroughly enough, but this cave is called the Bottomless Cave; it extends over more than three hundred li and contains a great many demon lairs.。」:「Last time my master was in the gatehouse marked by the two drops of water; now it is utterly silent, without so much as a ghost’s shadow, and I do not know where she has moved him.” The Heavenly King said, “Let her devise a thousand schemes; she cannot escape the nets of Heaven and Earth.。」We will decide what to do when we reach the cave mouth.” So they all set off.Look! After some ten-odd li, they reached the great rock.:「便。」:「『。』?」:「。」:「。」 :「。」:「。」Pointing to the entrance, no bigger than the mouth of a jar, Xingzhe said, “There it is.” The Heavenly King said, “‘How can one catch a tiger cub without entering the tiger’s den?’ Who dares go first?” Xingzhe replied, “I will.” The Third Prince said, “I bear the imperial decree to subdue the demon, so I will go first.” Then the Idiot grew recklessly eager and shouted, “Old Zhu must still lead the way!” The Heavenly King said, “Enough of this clamor. Follow my disposition: the Great Sage Sun and the Prince will lead the soldiers and generals below, while the three of us guard the entrance above. Thus, with forces working from within and without, we shall leave her no road to Heaven and no gate into Earth, and so display a little of our skill.” Everyone answered together, “Yes.”

See how Xingzhe and the Third Prince led the troops and plunged in one swift stream into the cave.Riding their cloud-light, they raised their heads and looked—and what a cave it truly was!

In an instant they halted their clouds and went straight to the demon’s former dwelling. They searched door by door, shouting and bellowing, level after level and place after place, until they had trampled bare the grass throughout all three hundred li; yet where was the demon? And where was Sanzang?:「。」They all said, “That vile beast must have left the cave long ago and gone far away.” Little did they know that in a dark southeastern corner, farther down, there was another small cave.竿Inside it stood a tiny inner gate and a low little room, with several kinds of flowers planted in pots and a few stems of bamboo beside the eaves; black vapors hung dense, while a hidden fragrance drifted richly. The old demon had spirited Sanzang away and moved him here, where she was forcing him to marry her.She had thought that Xingzhe would never find her again, but little did she know that her appointed end had come.Inside, the lesser demons were all jabbering noisily and crowding close together.:「!」One bolder than the rest stretched out its neck and peeped briefly outside, only to run headfirst into a celestial soldier; he shouted, “They are here!” Enraged, Xingzhe gripped his gold-banded cudgel and burst inside at once. The cramped interior was packed with a whole nest of demons. The Third Prince sent the celestial troops surging forward together; where could any of them hide?

Xingzhe found Tang Seng, together with the dragon-horse and the luggage.Seeing no way out, the old demon faced Prince Nezha and kept knocking her head on the ground, begging for her life.:「The Prince said, “We have come under the Jade Emperor’s decree to arrest you; this is no trifling matter.──。」All because my father and I accepted one stick of incense from you, we very nearly had ‘a monk hauling timber’—the making of a temple.” With a commanding shout, he ordered the celestial soldiers to bring out the demon-binding cords and tie up every one of the fiends. The old demon, too, could not escape a bout of suffering. They mounted their clouds again and all emerged from the cave.Xingzhe chuckled and chortled aloud.:「。」:「。」The Heavenly King opened the cave entrance and greeted Xingzhe, saying, “This time you have indeed found your master.” Xingzhe replied, “Many thanks, many thanks.” He then led Sanzang in bowing thanks to the Heavenly King, and afterward to the Prince.:「。」Sha Seng and Bajie wanted only to hack the old demon to pieces, but the Heavenly King said, “She has been arrested under the Jade Emperor’s decree and may not be dealt with lightly; we must still return and report on the decree.”

On one side, the Heavenly King and the Third Prince led the celestial troops and divine generals away, escorting the demon to the celestial court to await judgment;on the other, Xingzhe attended Tang Seng, Sha Seng gathered up the luggage, and Bajie brought over the horse; they helped Tang Seng mount, and all returned to the main road. And so it was that:

What befell them farther on will be told in the next chapter.

What it’s about

Armed with the tablets found in Bottomless Cave, Wukong goes to heaven and accuses Li Jing of failing to control his daughter. Li Jing initially denies the relationship and nearly fights him, but Nezha recalls that the golden-nosed white mouse spirit once stole fragrant candles at the Buddha's Vulture Peak. Father and son spared her then, and she gratefully adopted them as kin. The remembered incident validates Wukong's evidence and obliges the heavenly household to act.

Li Jing and Nezha descend with Wukong, surround the cave and subdue the mouse spirit. Sanzang is recovered from her marriage plot, and the party returns to the road after thanking the monastery that sheltered them. The conclusion depends less on overpowering the demon than on reconstructing her biography from objects, testimony and celestial memory. Her former pardon explains both her survival and her claimed family ties, while the present capture exposes the danger left by mercy without supervision.

When it was written 背景

The Pagoda-Bearing Heavenly King and Nezha belong to a familiar divine military family, so the comedy of Wukong bringing an accusation to their gate also stages competing jurisdictions. Adoption here is symbolic but binding enough to establish accountability. Learners can connect 義父, 義兄, 香花寶燭 and 收伏: ritual theft led to pardon, pardon to grateful kinship, and kinship to the authority that ends the later offense. The chapter complicates the simple opposition between compassion and punishment by showing that an earlier act of mercy creates future duties.
