In the Dharma-Destroying Kingdom the Vow to Kill Ten Thousand Monks
第084回Chapter 84
It is told that Tang Sanzang secured his primal essence and escaped the painful snare of lust. With his companions, he continued westward, and before they knew it, summer had come. The warm south wind had just begun to stir, and the plum rains fell in fine threads—a lovely season:
The master and his three disciples, enduring the scorching heat, were traveling along when they suddenly saw two rows of tall willows beside the road. From their shade emerged an old woman leading a little child by her right hand. She called loudly to Tang Seng, “Monk, go no farther! Turn your horse east at once, for westward there is nothing but a road to death.” Startled, Sanzang leapt from his horse, saluted her, and said, “Venerable Bodhisattva, the ancients said, ‘In the broad sea the fish may leap; beneath the boundless sky the birds may fly.’ How can there be no road westward?” Pointing west, the old woman said, “Five or six li from here lies the Kingdom of Exterminating the Dharma. Its king incurred a bitter grievance in a former life and now, in this life, commits crimes without cause. Two years ago he made a grand vow before all Heaven to kill ten thousand monks. Over these two years he has killed, one after another, nine thousand nine hundred and ninety-six monks of no renown; now he is only waiting for four famous monks to make up the full ten thousand and fulfill his vow. If you enter the city, you will all be delivering yourselves to the King of Death.” Hearing this, Sanzang was frightened and said tremblingly, “Venerable Bodhisattva, I am deeply grateful for your kindness and cannot thank you enough. But may I ask whether there is some convenient road that bypasses the city? This poor monk will go around it.” The old woman laughed. “You cannot go around it, you cannot. Only those who can fly may pass.” Bajie boasted from the side, “Mother, do not speak in riddles—we can all fly.”
With his fiery eyes and golden pupils, Wukong could discern truth from falsehood: the old woman and the child she led were really the Bodhisattva Guanyin and the Child Shancai. In alarm he threw himself down in worship, crying, “Bodhisattva, forgive your disciple for failing to welcome you!” The Bodhisattva gently rose upon an auspicious cloud. Tang Sanzang was so overwhelmed that he did not know where to stand and could only remain kneeling and kowtowing;八戒、沙僧也慌跪下,朝天禮拜。Bajie and Sha Seng also hastily knelt and worshiped toward the sky. In a moment the auspicious cloud faded into the distance, heading straight back to the Southern Sea.
Wukong rose and helped his master up, saying, “Please rise. The Bodhisattva has already returned to her sacred mountain.” Sanzang stood and said, “Wukong, since you recognized the Bodhisattva, why did you not tell us sooner?” Wukong laughed. “Before you had even finished questioning her, I fell down in worship. How was that not soon enough?” Bajie and Sha Seng said to Wukong, “Thanks to the Bodhisattva’s warning, the country ahead must indeed be the Kingdom of Exterminating the Dharma, where they kill monks. What are we to do?” Wukong said, “Fool, do not be afraid. We have faced venomous demons and savage monsters, tigers’ dens and dragons’ pools, yet never suffered harm;此間乃是一國凡人,有何懼哉?the people here are only ordinary mortals of a single kingdom, so what is there to fear? But we cannot stay here. Night is approaching, and villagers returning from trade in the city may see that we are monks and shout the news abroad, which would be most unsafe. Let us first lead Master off the main road and find a secluded place where we can discuss our plans.” Sanzang followed his advice, and the whole party left the road and settled beneath a hollow bank. Wukong said, “Brothers, guard Master well while old Sun changes his form and goes into the city to look around. I shall find a secluded route by which we may pass tonight.” Sanzang cautioned him, “Disciple, do not take this lightly. The king’s law shows no mercy, so you must be careful.” Wukong laughed. “Do not worry, do not worry. Old Sun knows what to do.”
With that, the Great Sage sprang upward and, with a whistling rush, leapt into the air. A wondrous sight:
He stood amid the clouds and looked down. He saw the city filled with a harmonious air of joy and rippling rays of auspicious light. Wukong said, “What a fine place! Why is it called Exterminating the Dharma?” He watched for a while as the sky gradually darkened, and then saw:
He thought, “I must go down into the streets to investigate the route, but with a face like this, anyone who meets me will surely say I am a monk. Let me change my appearance.” Pinching a magic formula and reciting an incantation, he shook himself and changed into a moth:
There he went, fluttering and flitting through the city’s busy streets and markets, close by eaves and around the corners of houses. As he flew, he suddenly came to a bend at the corner of a street, where every house had a little lantern hanging before its door. He thought, “Are these people celebrating the Lantern Festival? Why have they all lit lanterns in a row?” Stiffening his wings, he flew closer and looked carefully. On the square lantern of the house in the middle were written the six characters, “Lodgings for Traveling Merchants,” and beneath them four more: “Wang Xiao’er’s Inn.” Only then did Wukong realize that it was an inn and eating house. He craned his head in for a look and saw eight or nine men who had finished supper, loosened their clothes, removed their headcloths, washed their hands and feet, and gone separately to bed. Wukong rejoiced inwardly. “Master will be able to get through.” But how did he already know that? He had conceived a roguish plan: once the men were asleep, he would steal their clothes and headcloths so that the pilgrims could disguise themselves as laymen and enter the city.
Things did not go as he wished. While he was still pondering, the waiter came forward and warned them, “Gentlemen, take care. All sorts, honest and dishonest, stay here, so each of you must watch his clothes and baggage.” And what merchant traveling abroad would not be cautious? After hearing the innkeeper’s warning, they became more vigilant still.他都爬起來道:「主人家說得有理,我們走路的人辛苦,只怕睡著,急忙不醒,一時失所,奈何?They all sat up and said, “Our host speaks rightly. We travelers have a hard life, and we fear that once asleep we may fail to wake quickly and suddenly lose our belongings. What would we do then? Take these clothes, headcloths, and purses inside for safekeeping, and return them to us near dawn when we rise to leave.” Wang Xiao’er duly carried every last article of clothing into his own room. Impatient, Wukong spread his wings, flew inside, and alighted on a headcloth rack. He then saw Wang Xiao’er take down the lantern at the entrance, lower the hanging shutters, close the doors and windows, and finally enter his room, undress, and lie down. Wang Xiao’er had a wife and two children, and the children kept wailing and making such a racket that no one could get to sleep. The woman took up a ragged garment and went on patching and stitching it, showing no sign of going to bed.
Wukong thought, “If I wait until this woman falls asleep before acting, will I not delay Master?” He also feared that as the night deepened the city gates would close, so, unable to endure any longer, he flew down and pounced upon the lamp. Truly: He cast himself into the flame, singeing his brow to seek a way of life. The lamp went out at once. Shaking himself again, he changed into a rat, squeaked twice, jumped down, seized the clothes and headcloths, and made for the door. The woman cried in panic, “Old man, disaster! A night rat has turned into a spirit!” Hearing her, Wukong worked another spell, blocked the door, and shouted sternly, “Wang Xiao’er, do not listen to your wife’s nonsense. I am no night rat turned spirit. An honorable man acts openly: I am the Great Sage Equal to Heaven descended among mortals, protecting Tang Seng on his journey west to fetch the scriptures. Because your king is without the Way, I have come specially to borrow these clothes and caps to disguise my master. Once we have passed through the city, I shall return them at once.” Hearing this, Wang Xiao’er scrambled out of bed. Groping in the darkness and flustered besides, he snatched up a pair of trousers thinking it was a shirt, but could get neither his left arm nor his right into it.
The Great Sage used his power of attraction and was already riding a cloud away. Turning back, he went straight to the hollow beside the road. Under the bright stars and clear moon, Sanzang leaned forward and peered intently. Seeing Wukong approach, he called, “Disciple, can we get through the Kingdom of Exterminating the Dharma?” Wukong came forward, set down the clothing, and said, “Master, if we are to pass through that kingdom, we cannot remain monks.” Bajie said, “Brother, whom are you trying to corner with that? It is easy enough not to be monks: we need only go without shaving for half a year, and our hair will grow back.” Wukong said, “We cannot wait half a year. We must all become laymen this very moment.” The fool grew alarmed. “You speak without considering reason. We are monks now; if we must become laymen at once, how are we to wear headcloths? Even if we bind them tightly around the edges, we have no topknots to fasten them to.” Sanzang rebuked him, “Stop your foolery and attend to serious business. What exactly is the situation?” Wukong said, “Master, I have inspected the city. Though its king is without the Way and kills monks, he is nevertheless a true Son of Heaven, for auspicious light and joyful vapors hover above the walls. I have also learned the city streets. I understand the local speech as well and can speak it. Just now I borrowed these clothes and headcloths from an inn. We shall disguise ourselves as laymen, enter the city, and secure lodging. At the fourth watch we shall rise and have the innkeeper prepare a vegetarian meal. We shall wait until the fifth watch, slip out when the city gates open, and take the great road west. Even if someone encounters and detains us, we can offer a plausible explanation: we shall say we are imperial envoys from the superior kingdom and that the King of Exterminating the Dharma dared not hinder us but allowed us through.” Sha Seng said, “Elder Brother’s plan is most suitable. Let us follow it.”
The elder had no choice. He took off his short monastic robe and monk’s cap, put on lay clothing, and wrapped a headcloth around his head. Sha Seng changed as well. Bajie’s head was too large for a headcloth, so Wukong took needle and thread, ripped open two of them, and sewed them into one, which he draped over Bajie’s head;揀件寬大的衣服,與他穿了。then he selected a roomy garment for him to wear. Afterward Wukong changed into an outfit himself and said, “Gentlemen, once we set out, put away the words ‘master’ and ‘disciple.’” Bajie asked, “Without those words, what shall we call one another?” Wukong replied, “We must address one another as brothers: Master will be called Lord Tang, you Lord Zhu the Third, Sha Seng Lord Sha the Fourth, and I Lord Sun the Second. Once we reach the inn, none of you must speak; let me alone answer all questions. If they ask what our business is, say that we are horse dealers and that this white horse is a sample. Say that we are ten brothers and that the four of us have come ahead to rent rooms from which to sell our horses. The innkeeper will certainly treat us well. After we have enjoyed his hospitality and are about to leave, I shall pick up a shard of tile, turn it into silver to thank him, and then we shall be on our way.” The elder had no choice but to comply.
The four hurriedly led the horse, shouldered the luggage, and hastened over there. It was a peaceful country, and though the first watch had begun, the gates were not yet closed, so they went straight in. When they reached the entrance of Wang Xiao’er’s inn, they heard shouting inside. One man was saying, “My headcloth is gone!” and another, “My clothes are gone!” Pretending to know nothing, Wukong led the others to seek lodging at a house diagonally opposite. Its lantern was still hanging outside, so he approached the door and called, “Innkeeper, have you an empty room where we may lodge?” A woman inside answered, “Yes, yes, yes! Please go upstairs, gentlemen.” Before she had finished speaking, a man came to take the horse, and Wukong handed it over to be led inside. Keeping behind the lantern’s glow, Wukong led his master straight up to the upper room, where convenient tables and chairs stood ready. They pushed open the lattice window and sat down together in the moonlight. Someone came up to light a lamp, but Wukong blocked the doorway and blew it out with a single breath. “With a moon this bright, we need no lamp.”
That person had scarcely gone down when a maid brought four bowls of clear tea, which Wukong received. Then another woman came up from below, looking about fifty-seven or fifty-eight years old, and stood beside them. She asked, “Honored guests, where have you come from? What valuable goods do you carry?” Wukong replied, “We come from the north and have several common horses to sell.” The woman said, “You horse dealers are still rather young.” Wukong said, “This is Lord Tang, this is Lord Zhu the Third, and this is Lord Sha the Fourth. This humble student is Lord Sun the Second.” The woman laughed. “You have different surnames.” Wukong said, “Indeed, we are men of different surnames living as one family. There are ten brothers altogether; the four of us came ahead to rent rooms and arrange our meals. The other six are lodging outside the city with a herd of horses, for it was too late to bring them in. Once we have rented premises, they will all enter tomorrow morning. We shall return home only after the horses are sold.” The woman asked, “How many horses are in the herd?” Wukong replied, “About a hundred, large and small. They are all built like this horse of mine, though their coats differ.” The woman laughed. “Lord Sun the Second, you truly know the rules and customs of merchants. Luckily you came to my establishment; no other house would dare accommodate you. My courtyard is spacious, my stalls and mangers complete, and I have plenty of fodder. I could keep even several hundred horses for you. There is only one matter: I have kept this inn for many years, and it has a humble name. My late husband’s surname was Zhao, but sadly he passed away long ago. My establishment is called Widow Zhao’s Inn. At my inn we entertain guests in three different ways. Let us speak as petty men first and gentlemen afterward: we should settle the price of the rooms beforehand, so that the account will be easy later.” Wukong said, “Quite right. What are the three ways in which your establishment entertains guests? As the saying goes, ‘Goods have high, middle, and low prices, but guests from near and far receive equal regard.’ Why do you speak of three ways of treating guests? Tell me about them, if you please.” Widow Zhao said, “We offer upper, middle, and lower grades. The upper grade provides a banquet of five fruits and five vegetable dishes, with a grand table of sweets, one table for every two guests, and young women invited to sing and share your beds. It costs five qian of silver per person, including the room.” Wukong laughed. “That is cheap! Where I come from, five qian would not even hire a young woman.” The widow continued, “The middle grade is a shared table with fruit and warm wine. You may pour for yourselves and play drinking games, but there are no young women. It costs only two qian of silver per person.” Wukong said, “Cheaper still! And what is the lower grade?” The woman said, “I would not dare mention it before honored guests.” Wukong replied, “Tell us anyway; then we can choose whichever is economical.” The woman said, “In the lower grade, no one waits upon you. There is ready-cooked rice in the pot, and guests may eat as much as they please. When they are full, they take a little straw, spread it on the floor, and sleep wherever convenient. 八戒聽說道:「造化,造化!At daybreak they may give whatever few coins they wish for the food, and we never quarrel over it.” Hearing this, Bajie cried, “What luck, what luck! Old Zhu’s kind of bargain has arrived! Let me eat my fill straight from the pot, then sleep like the devil before the stove!” Wukong said, “Brother, what are you saying? As men who travel the rivers and lakes, where have we ever failed to earn a few taels of silver? Prepare the upper grade for us.”
The woman was delighted and immediately called, “Bring the finest tea, and have the kitchen prepare the food at once!” Going downstairs, she busily ordered, “Slaughter chickens and geese, and cook cured meats to go with the rice!” Then she called, “Kill pigs and sheep too. If we cannot use them all today, we can use them tomorrow. 三藏在樓上聽見道:「孫二官,怎好?Bring good wine, cook white rice, and roll out wheaten cakes.” Hearing this from upstairs, Sanzang said, “Lord Sun the Second, what are we to do? She is slaughtering chickens and geese and killing pigs and sheep. If she serves them to us, how can any of us, lifelong vegetarians, dare eat them?” Wukong replied, “I have a plan.” Going to the stairway, he stamped his foot and called, “Mother Zhao, come up here.” She came upstairs and asked, “What are your orders, Lord Sun the Second?” Wukong said, “Do not kill any living creatures today, for we are observing a fast.” The widow asked in surprise, “Do you gentlemen abstain from meat all your lives, or only on certain days of the month?” Wukong replied, “Neither. We call ours the Gengshen fast. Today is a Gengshen day, so we must fast. Once the third watch has passed, it will be Xinyou, and we may break the fast. Do your slaughtering tomorrow. For now, prepare us some vegetarian dishes, but charge us the full upper-grade price.”
The woman was more delighted than ever. Running downstairs, she ordered, “Do not slaughter them, do not slaughter them! 咦!Fetch some wood ear mushrooms, Min bamboo shoots, tofu, and wheat gluten; pull some greens from the garden, make vermicelli soup, let dough rise and steam some rolls, then cook white rice and brew fragrant tea.” Yi! The cooks were all practiced hands at their daily work, and in no time they had everything prepared and laid out upstairs; there were also ready-made lion-shaped sweetmeats and fruit, of which the four pilgrims partook freely. She asked again, “May you drink meatless wine?” Xingzhe replied, “Only Officer Tang abstains; the rest of us may drink a few cups.” The widow fetched another warmed pot of wine. The three had only just filled their cups when they suddenly heard a clattering of boards. Xingzhe asked, “Madam, what household gear has fallen over downstairs?” The widow replied, “Nothing has fallen. A few tenants from my little estate came late to deliver their rent rice, so I had them sleep downstairs. Since you gentlemen arrived and I had no one else to send, I told them to carry a sedan to the pleasure house and invite some young ladies to keep you company. I expect the sedan poles struck the floorboards.” Xingzhe said, “You should have told us sooner! Stop them quickly: for one thing, we are observing a period of abstinence; for another, our companions have not yet arrived. Let them come tomorrow instead. We shall each hire a courtesan and enjoy ourselves here at your establishment; then, once the horses are sold, we shall set out.” The widow said, “Good men, good men! That way neither goodwill nor your strength will be lost.” She ordered, “Bring the sedan back in; do not go invite them.” When the four had finished their wine and food, the utensils were cleared away and everyone dispersed.
Sanzang whispered into Xingzhe’s ear, “Where are we to sleep?” Xingzhe answered, “Right here upstairs.” Sanzang said, “That is not safe. We are all weary from our hardships. Suppose we fall asleep and someone in the household comes to tidy up; if they see that our caps have slipped off and exposed our shaven heads, they will know we are monks and raise an outcry. What shall we do then?” Xingzhe said, “True!” He went to the head of the stairs and stamped his feet. The widow came up again and asked, “What further instructions has Officer Sun?” Xingzhe asked, “Where are we to sleep?” The woman replied, “Upstairs is an excellent place: there are no mosquitoes, a southerly breeze is blowing, and with the windows wide open it is wonderfully comfortable.” Xingzhe said, “We cannot sleep here. My Officer Zhu the Third suffers somewhat from chills and damp; Officer Sha the Fourth has a shoulder sensitive to drafts; Elder Brother Tang can sleep only in darkness; and my own eyes are somewhat averse to light. This is no place for us to sleep.”
The madam went downstairs, leaned against the counter rail, and sighed. Her daughter, carrying a child, came over and said, “Mother, as the saying goes, ‘Sit ten days at the head of the rapids, and in one day pass nine.’ Though business is poor in the summer heat, when autumn comes there will be more trade than we can handle. Why are you sighing?” The woman replied, “My child, I am not fretting over a lack of business. This evening, just as I was about to close the shop at the first watch, these four horse dealers came to hire rooms, and they asked for the finest hospitality. I hoped to earn a few coins of silver from them, but they eat vegetarian fare, so there is no money to be made; that is why I sigh.” Her daughter said, “Now that they have eaten here, they can hardly go to another house. Tomorrow you can prepare meat dishes and wine for them, so why should you make no money?” The woman replied, “They are all ailing, afraid of drafts or averse to light, and insist on sleeping in darkness. You know that all the rooms in our house have only single-layer tiles; where are we to find a dark place? We might as well give them this one meal and tell them to lodge elsewhere.” Her daughter said, “Mother, our house does have a dark place, with no drafts at all. It would be perfect.” The woman asked, “Where?” Her daughter replied, “When Father was alive, he had a great chest made. It is four feet wide, seven feet long, and about three feet high; six or seven people could sleep inside. Let them sleep in the chest.” The woman said, “I wonder whether they would agree. Let me ask them.—Officer Sun, our humble dwelling has no other dark place, but we do have a great chest that admits neither wind nor light. Would you sleep inside it?” Xingzhe replied, “Excellent, excellent, excellent!” She immediately had several tenants carry out the chest, open its lid, and invite the travelers downstairs.
Xingzhe led his master, while Sha Seng carried the luggage, and following behind the lamplight they went straight to the chest. Bajie, without caring whether it was suitable or not, clambered into the chest first. Sha Seng handed in the luggage, helped Tang Seng inside, and then climbed in himself. Xingzhe asked, “Where is my horse?” An attendant nearby answered, “It is tethered in the rear building, eating fodder.” Xingzhe said, “Bring it here, carry over its manger, and tether it close beside the chest.” Only then did he climb in and call, “Madam Zhao, put down the lid, insert the locking pin, and fasten the lock. And please look around for any cracks that admit light, and paste some paper over them. Come early tomorrow morning to let us out.” The widow said, “How very cautious you are!” Then everyone shut their doors and went to sleep, and we shall speak no more of them.
Now let us tell how the four fared inside the chest—pitiful indeed! For one thing, they were unused to wearing headcloths; for another, the weather was hot, and with the air sealed in there was not the slightest ventilation. They all removed their headcloths and took off their clothes. Having no fans, they could only flap their monks’ caps to stir the air. Each pressed against the next, until around the second watch they finally all fell asleep. Xingzhe alone, intent on stirring up trouble, could not sleep. He reached out and gave Bajie’s leg a pinch. The idiot drew back his leg and grumbled, “Go to sleep! After all our hardships, how can you still have the heart to play at pinching hands and feet?” Mischievous Xingzhe said, “Our original capital was five thousand taels. We sold the earlier horses for three thousand, and now have four thousand in our two saddlebags. If this herd brings another three thousand, we shall have doubled our investment. Enough, enough.” But Bajie wanted to sleep and made no reply.
Little did they know that the inn’s waiters, water carriers, and fire tenders had long been in league with robbers. Hearing Xingzhe speak of so much silver, they sent several men slipping out to gather more than twenty bandits, who came openly with torches and weapons to rob the horse dealers and burst through the gate. Madam Zhao, the widow, and her daughters were so terrified that they tremblingly barred their bedroom doors and left the bandits to do as they pleased outside. The thieves had no interest in the inn’s furnishings; they sought only the guests. Finding no trace of them upstairs, they lit torches and searched on every side. In the courtyard they saw only a great chest, with a white horse tethered to one of its feet. The lid was securely locked, and the chest was too heavy to overturn. The bandits said, “Travelers of the rivers and lakes are always full of cunning. Judging by the weight of this chest, their baggage, money, and valuables must be locked inside. Why not steal the horse, carry the chest out of the city, break it open, and divide the contents among ourselves?” The thieves accordingly found ropes and carrying poles, hoisted the chest, and bore it away, swaying to and fro. Bajie awoke and said, “Brother, go to sleep. Why are you rocking us?” Xingzhe replied, “Do not speak; no one is rocking us.” Sanzang and Sha Seng suddenly awoke as well and asked, “Who is carrying us?” Xingzhe said, “Do not shout, do not shout. Let them carry us. If they carry us all the way to the Western Heaven, it will save us the walk.”
Having succeeded in their theft, the bandits did not go west but carried the chest eastward. They killed the soldiers guarding the gate, opened it, and fled the city. This at once alarmed the fire-watch patrolmen from every shop throughout the six avenues and three marketplaces, and they reported it to the commander of the city patrol and the Eastern City Office of Cavalry. As the matter fell directly within their responsibility, the commander and the cavalry officers immediately mustered troops and archers and rode out of the city in pursuit. Seeing the government forces were too strong, the bandits dared not resist. They put down the great chest, abandoned the white horse, and scattered into the wilderness. The troops failed to capture so much as half a robber, but they recovered the chest and seized the horse, then returned in triumph. By lamplight, the commander saw what a splendid horse it was:

He led his troops back into the city, had the chest carried to his headquarters, and together with the cavalry officers affixed a written seal to it. He ordered men to guard it until daybreak, when they would report to the throne and request the king’s decision. The troops then dispersed, and we shall speak no more of them.

When the third watch arrived, Xingzhe worked a spell. He drew out his staff, breathed a breath of immortal air upon it, and cried, “Change!” It became a three-pointed drill, with which he bored two or three times near the foot of the chest, making a small hole. He put away the drill, shook himself, changed into a tiny mole cricket, and scrambled out. Resuming his true form, he mounted a cloud and went straight to the gates of the royal palace. The king was then deep in sleep. Xingzhe employed the Great Art of Universal Assembly by Divided Bodies: he plucked all the hairs from his left arm, breathed immortal breath upon them, and cried, “Change!” They all became little Xingzhes. He then plucked all the hairs from his right arm, breathed immortal breath upon them, and cried, “Change!” They all became sleep insects. He recited the true-word spell “Om” and ordered the local earth god to lead the company in scattering themselves throughout the palace’s inner courts, the Five Offices and Six Ministries, and the homes of officials great and small in every government bureau. Everyone holding rank was to be given a sleep insect, so that each would sleep soundly and not be permitted even to turn over. Then he took the golden-hooped staff in his hand, weighed it, brandished it, and cried, “Precious one, change!” It instantly became a thousand or more barber’s razors. Taking one himself, he ordered each of the little Xingzhes to take another, and they all went into the palace’s inner courts, the Five Offices and Six Ministries, and every government bureau to shave heads.咦!Ah! This is truly what is meant by:

He shrank it to a tiny size and hid it inside his ear. Then he turned another somersault, became a mole cricket again, crawled into the chest, and resumed his true form, remaining there in confinement with Tang Seng, of whom we shall speak no more.

Now in the palace’s inner courts, before daybreak the palace maids and richly dressed attendants rose to wash and comb their hair, only to find that every one of them had lost it all. The eunuchs, high and low, who served throughout the palace had also lost all their hair. They flocked together to the imperial bedchamber, where they played music to awaken the sleeper; every one of them had tears in their eyes, yet none dared tell what had happened. Before long, the empresses of the three palaces awoke and found that they too had lost all their hair. They hurriedly brought a lamp to the dragon bed, and when they looked beneath the embroidered quilt, there lay a monk asleep. Unable to contain herself, the empress cried out and woke the king. The king opened his eyes in alarm and saw the empress’s bald head. Scrambling up, he exclaimed, “My dear consort, how did you come to be like this?” The empress replied, “My lord is the same.” The emperor felt his head and was so terrified that his three corpse-spirits groaned and his seven souls flew into the air. “What am I to do?” he cried. Amid this panic, the consorts of the six courts, the palace maids and richly dressed attendants, and all the eunuchs, high and low, came kneeling with bare heads and said, “My lord, we have become monks!” Seeing them, the king wept and said, “It must be because We have slaughtered monks…” He immediately issued an order: “None of you may reveal that your hair has been shorn, lest the civil and military ministers condemn the realm for its unrighteousness. For now, all of you proceed to the throne hall and prepare the morning court.”

Now the officials, high and low, of the Five Offices, Six Ministries, and all the government bureaus had to attend court and pay homage before the palace gates before dawn. But during the night every one of them had likewise lost all his hair. Each man therefore wrote a memorial reporting the matter. One could hear only this:

What it’s about
The travelers approach the Dharma-Destroying Kingdom, whose ruler has vowed to kill ten thousand Buddhist monks and lacks only four victims to complete the number. Warned by frightened residents, the pilgrims cannot enter openly. Wukong conceals the party in a large chest carried by an innkeeper, but thieves steal it during the night. When the robbers open their prize outside the city, the four emerge, recover their belongings and turn the dangerous mishap into a route toward the royal court.
Wukong then uses magic to shave the heads of the king, his officials and the city's people while they sleep. Awaking with the unmistakable appearance of monks, the persecutors experience the category they had marked for death. The king abandons his vow and receives the pilgrims, allowing Buddhism to survive without a battle or massacre. Rather than punish violence with violence, Wukong makes identity suddenly universal and converts a numerical campaign of extermination into embarrassed recognition.
When it was written 背景
The kingdom's name announces institutional persecution rather than a demon's appetite. Its vow reduces persons to a quota, and the missing four grimly match the pilgrim party. Shaving answers that arithmetic through bodily symbolism: a tonsured head normally marks Buddhist renunciation, but here it becomes involuntary solidarity. Learners should track 滅法, 和尚, 一萬 and 剃頭. The chest and robbery add folktale farce, yet concealment remains morally serious because visible religious identity has become fatal under state policy.
