At the Sea-Pacifying Monastery Tang Sanzang Falls Ill

081Chapter 81

The story goes that Sanzang and his disciples arrived at Zhenhai Chanlin Temple, where the assembled monks came out to greet them and laid out a vegetarian feast. When the four pilgrims had finished eating, the girl too recovered some strength from the food.Gradually the sky darkened, and lamps were lit in the abbot's quarters. The monks, partly to ask Tang Sanzang about the history of his scripture pilgrimage, and partly eager to steal looks at the girl, gathered in thick clusters, arrayed beneath the lamplight.:「西?」Sanzang said to the lama monk he was meeting for the first time, 'Abbot, tomorrow we leave this precious mountain — what is the road west like?' The monk dropped to both knees.:「Startled, the elder grabbed hold of him and said, 'Please rise, Abbot.'?」:「西'I only asked you about the road ahead — why do you kneel?' The monk said, 'Reverend Master, tomorrow's journey west is smooth and level; there is no need to trouble your mind.''It's just that there is a matter at present that is rather awkward — I should have spoken of it the moment you arrived, but I feared it might offend your mighty presence.''Only now that the meal is over do I dare speak boldly of it: you, Reverend Master, have come a long weary road from the east, and it would be well that you rest here in this humble monk's quarters;'便。」:「'it is only that this Bodhisattva-like young lady presents a difficulty — I do not know where would be proper to have her sleep.' Sanzang said, 'Abbot, do not let suspicion arise, thinking that my disciples and I harbor any improper intent.''This morning as we passed through Black Pine Forest, we came upon this girl bound to a tree.''My disciple Sun Wukong was unwilling to save her; it was I who, moved by a bodhi heart of compassion, rescued her.'。」 :「。」殿'Now that we have arrived here, it is up to you, Abbot, to decide where to send her to sleep.' The monk thanked him and said, 'Since the Reverend Master is so generous, let her go to the Hall of the Heavenly Kings, and behind the statue of the Heavenly King let a straw pallet be laid out for her to sleep on.' Sanzang said, 'Very good, very good.' Thereupon several young monks led the girl off to sleep behind the hall. The elder then remained in the abbot's quarters, and asked the assembled abbots to take their ease, whereupon each went his own way.:「。」Sanzang instructed Wukong, 'You have all worked hard — sleep early and rise early.' So they all slept together in one place, not daring to leave his side, guarding their master. As the night deepened, it was just as the verse says:

Of that night's conversation nothing more need be told. When day broke, Wukong rose and told Bajie and Sha Seng to pack up the baggage and ready the horse, then went to ask the Master to set off.At that moment the elder was still deep in sleep and had not yet woken.:「。」Wukong went up close and called out, 'Master!' The Master raised his head slightly but could not manage to answer.:「?」:「?」Wukong asked, 'Master, what do you say?' The elder groaned, 'Why is it that my head feels so light and dizzy, my eyes so swollen, and every bone and inch of skin on my body aches?' Hearing this, Bajie reached out and felt his body — it was somewhat feverish.:「。」:「The idiot laughed and said, 'I know what it is — last night, seeing a free meal, you ate a few bowls too many, then lay right down with your head sunk low, and it's given you indigestion.' Wukong shouted, 'Nonsense!'。」:「。」:「'Let me ask the Master exactly what happened.' Sanzang said, 'In the middle of the night I got up to relieve myself, and not having put on my hat, I suppose the wind struck me.' Wukong said, 'That sounds more like it.'?」:「'Can you travel now?' Sanzang said, 'I cannot even sit up now — how could I mount the horse?'。」:「'But this will delay our journey.' Wukong said, 'Master, what kind of talk is that?':『。』'As the saying goes, "One day a teacher, a father for life." We, being your disciples, are just like your sons.':『便。』'And there is another saying: "In raising a son, one need not shower him in gold and silver — it is enough that he responds rightly to the occasion." Since your body is unwell, why speak of delaying the journey?'便?」'What harm is there in resting patiently a few more days?' So the brothers all attended upon their master, and before they knew it morning gave way to noon, dusk followed, and no sooner had a fine night passed than dawn crept in again.

Time flew swiftly by, and already three days had passed.:「?」:「One day, the Master raised himself up and called out, 'Wukong, these past two days my illness has weighed heavily on me, and I have not had the chance to ask you: that girl who was saved from death — has anyone brought her food to eat?' Wukong laughed and said, 'Why do you concern yourself with her?'。」:「'Just take care of your own illness first.' Sanzang said, 'Quite right, quite right.' :「?」:「。」:「'Help me sit up, and fetch out my paper, brush, and ink, and borrow an inkstone from the temple for me to use.' Wukong said, 'What for?' The elder said, 'I want to compose a letter, and seal it together with the travel rescript, for you to deliver up to Chang'an on my behalf, to see Emperor Taizong face to face.' Wukong said, 'That's easy enough. Old Monkey is good for little else, but when it comes to delivering letters, I am first under heaven.''Just get the letter ready and hand it to me — with one somersault I'll deliver it to Chang'an and give it to the Tang emperor, and with another somersault I'll be back again, before your brush and ink have even dried.''But why is it you want to send a letter at all?'。」:「'Just recite the gist of it to me first, and it won't be too late to write it after.' The elder, tears falling, said, 'I shall write it thus:'

:「Hearing these words, Wukong could not help but burst out laughing, 'Master, you're too faint-hearted — the moment you have some slight illness, you get thoughts like these.''If you were gravely ill, on the brink of life and death, you'd only need to ask me — Old Monkey has his own means. Ask which King Yama would dare have such a thought,''which judge would dare issue a warrant,'使'which ghost messenger would dare come to fetch your soul?'。」:「。」'If they angered me, I would bring out the temper that once threw Heaven's Palace into great turmoil, and with my staff clearing the way I would smash straight into the underworld, seize the Ten Kings of Hell, and pull the sinews out of every one of them, and even then I would not let them off.' Sanzang said, 'Disciple, my illness is severe — do not speak such wild boasts.'

:「Bajie stepped forward and said, 'Elder Brother, the Master says he is not well, yet you keep insisting he is fine — this is most improper.'。」:「'We had better plan ahead — sell the horse, pawn the baggage, buy a coffin, see him off, and then go our separate ways.' Wukong said, 'The idiot is talking nonsense again — you don't understand.'。」:「西?」:「'Master is the second disciple of our Buddha Tathagata, originally called Elder Golden Cicada; it was only because he treated the Buddhist teachings with disrespect that he was fated to suffer this ordeal.' Bajie said, 'Brother, if the Master showed disrespect for the Dharma and was banished back to the Land of the East, into this sea of right and wrong, this arena of gossiping tongues, taking on human form, vowing to go west to worship the Buddha and seek the scriptures — bound by every demon he meets, strung up by every fiend he encounters — surely he has suffered enough. Why must he also be made to fall ill?' Wukong said, 'What would you know of it?'。」 :「'While our Reverend Master was listening to the Buddha preach the Dharma, he dozed off for a moment, and as he tilted downward, his left foot kicked over a single grain of rice — and for that, once he descended to the lower world, he was fated to suffer this three-day illness.' Bajie exclaimed in alarm, 'The way old Pig spills and scatters his food when he eats, there's no telling how many years of illness I ought to suffer for it!' Wukong said, 'Brother, the Buddha does not keep such things in mind for common creatures like you — you simply don't understand.':『'As the saying goes: "Hoeing the rice at noon's high sun, sweat drips down to the earth beneath the grain."'。』。」:「'"Who knows that of the food upon the plate, every grain is hard-won toil?" The Master need only bear it one more day — by tomorrow he'll be well.' Sanzang said, 'Today I feel different from yesterday: my throat is terribly parched.'。」 Go find some cool water somewhere and bring it for me to drink.' Wukong said, 'Good — if the Master wants water to drink, that means he's getting better.'。」'Let me go fetch the water.'

He at once took up the alms bowl and went to the Fragrant Kitchen behind the temple to fetch water. There he suddenly saw that the monks, one and all, had eyes red from weeping, choked with grief, yet not daring to cry aloud.:「Wukong said, 'You monks are being far too petty about this.'?」:「。」:「'We've stayed here a few days, and when we leave we'll thank you properly and pay you back day by day for firewood and food — why be such spineless cowards about it?' The monks, flustered, dropped to their knees and said, 'We would not dare, we would not dare.' Wukong said, 'Would not dare what?'?」:「'I suppose it's that long-mouthed monk of mine, whose stomach is so large, who has eaten his way through your provisions?' The monks said, 'My lord, in this humble mountain temple of ours there are, great and small, a hundred or so monks; if each one of us fed you for a single day, we could support you for a hundred days and more.'?」:「?」:「'How would we dare be so mean-hearted as to fuss over the cost of your food and drink?' Wukong said, 'If you're not fussing over that, then why are you weeping?' The monks said, 'My lord, we don't know from which mountain it came, but there is a demon-spirit haunting this temple.''At night we send two young monks to strike the bell and beat the drum, and no sooner do we hear the bell and drum sound than the two never return.''The next day, when we go searching, we find only their monks' caps and shoes cast off in the garden behind, with their bones still lying there — they had been eaten.''In the three days since you arrived, six monks have gone missing from our temple.''That is why we brother monks cannot help but be afraid, cannot help but grieve.'。」:「'Seeing that your reverend Master was gravely ill, we did not dare speak of it, yet could not stop tears from secretly falling.' Hearing this, Wukong was both alarmed and pleased, and said, 'Say no more — it must certainly be a demon harming people here.'。」:「'Let me wipe it out for you.' The monks said, 'My lord, a spirit that were not potent could not be called a spirit.''It surely can ride clouds and mount mist, surely can pass from the shadow-realm into the underworld and back.':『。』便'As the ancients well said, "Do not trust too readily in what seems straightforwardly straight; guard against those without benevolence." My lord, do not blame us for saying so: if you are able to capture and subdue it, you will have removed this root of calamity from our humble mountain, and that would be the good fortune of three lifetimes for us;'便。」:「便?」:「'but if you should fail to subdue it, there would be a good many inconvenient consequences.' Wukong said, 'What do you mean by "a good many inconvenient consequences"?' The monks said, 'To be perfectly honest with you, my lord, though this humble mountain of ours has a hundred or so monks, every one of us left home to become a monk from early childhood.''When our hair grows long we find a blade to shave it; when our robes grow thin and torn we mend them with patchwork.''Rising in the morning we wash our faces, then fold our hands and bow low, taking refuge in the Great Way;''at night we tidy up and burn incense, reverently clicking our teeth as we chant the name of Amitabha.''Raising our heads we behold the nine grades of the Buddha's lotus, cultivate the compassionate ferry of the Three Vehicles together with the clouds of Dharma, and wish to behold the World-Honored One of Jetavana Garden; lowering our heads we look within our own hearts, keep the Five Precepts, seek to deliver the great multitude of beings, and amid the ten thousand dharmas of life after life, we hope to awaken to stubborn emptiness and to the emptiness of form.'》,》;'When the patrons come, old and young, tall and short, fat and thin, each one of us strikes the wooden fish, sounds the golden chime, and crowded shoulder to shoulder we chant two scrolls of the Lotus Sutra, one volume of the Emperor Liang's Repentance;''when the patrons do not come, whether new acquaintance or old, stranger or familiar face, rustic or comely, each one of us presses palms together, closes our eyes, and in silent stillness enters meditation upon the cushion, firmly barring the gate beneath the moon.'便'Let the orioles cry and the birds chatter and squabble idly as they please — none of it touches our expedient and compassionate Great Vehicle of the Dharma.''For this reason, we know nothing of subduing tigers, nor of taming dragons;''we do not recognize monsters, nor do we know spirits when we see them.''If you, my lord, should stir that demon to anger, our hundred-odd monks would only be enough to fill its belly for a single meal.''First, it would cast us common beings down into the cycle of rebirth;''second, it would wipe out this ancient site of our Chan monastery;''and third, it would leave not a shred of glory for the Tathagata's assembly.' These, then, are the many inconveniences we spoke of.'

便:「When Wukong heard the monks speak these words, anger rose up from his heart and malice sprang up beside his gall, and he cried out loudly, 'You monks are such fools!'?」:「。」:「'You only know of that demon-spirit, but do you not know of Old Monkey's own doings?' The monks answered timidly, 'Truly, we do not know.' Wukong said, 'Let me tell you a bit of it briefly today — listen well.''I have subdued tigers and tamed dragons on Flower-Fruit Mountain; I have also gone up to Heaven and thrown the Palace of Heaven into great turmoil.''When hungry, I took Laojun's elixir pills and casually bit off two or three;''when thirsty, I helped myself to the Jade Emperor's wine and lightly downed six or seven cups.''With these golden pupils of mine, neither white nor black, wide open, the sky turned dim and the moon grew hazy;''wielding this gold-banded staff of mine, neither short nor long, I came without a shadow and left without a trace.''What matter if they be great spirits or small demons — why should I fear their wretched, festering tricks?''Once I give chase, some run, some tremble, some hide, some panic;''once I catch them, some get filed, some get burned, some get ground, some get pounded.''It was just as when the Eight Immortals crossed the sea, only it was I alone who showed off such divine power.'。」'You monks — I'll catch this demon-spirit for you to see, and only then will you truly know Old Monkey.'

The monks listened and nodded secretly to themselves, thinking, 'This bald rascal opens his mouth so wide and talks so big — he must have some real history behind him.' And one after another they all murmured their assent.:「Only the lama monk said, 'Wait a moment.''Your reverend Master is gravely ill — capturing this demon is not the most urgent matter.':『便'As the common saying goes: "A man attending a banquet, if not drunk, is at least full;"'。』 a warrior facing battle, if not killed, is at least wounded." Should the two of you come to blows and it bring trouble upon your Master, that would hardly be a safe course.'

:「Wukong said, 'That's reasonable, reasonable.'。」:「。」便'Let me first take this cool water to my Master, and come back after.' He picked up the bowl, filled it with cool water, turned back out of the Fragrant Kitchen, and went straight to the abbot's quarters, calling out, 'Master, here's cool water to drink.' Sanzang, just then in the midst of his feverish thirst, raised his head, took the bowl in both hands, and drained it in a single draught.Truly it was: when thirst is at its height, a single drop is like sweet dew; when the true remedy is applied, illness departs at once.:「?」:「。」:「。」Wukong, seeing the elder's spirits gradually reviving, his brow and eyes relaxing, asked, 'Master, could you eat a little soup and rice?' Sanzang said, 'That cool water was like a miraculous elixir — my illness is already half gone; I could manage a little soup and rice.' Wukong called out again and again at the top of his voice, 'My Master is well! He wants soup and rice!' and had the monks hurry to prepare it: washing rice and cooking it, rolling dough and baking flatcakes, steaming buns, and making noodle soup, until four or five tables were brought out laden with food.Tang Sanzang managed only half a bowl of rice broth; Wukong and Sha Seng ate but a single table's worth between them; all the rest went into Bajie's belly alone. The dishes were cleared away, lamps were lit, and the monks each dispersed to their own quarters.

:「?」:「Sanzang said, 'How many days have we now stayed here?' Wukong said, 'A full three days.'便。」:「。」:「。」:「。」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「'By tomorrow evening it will be four full days.' Sanzang said, 'Three days have already cost us a good deal of travel time.' Wukong said, 'Master, that hardly counts against our journey — let us set off tomorrow.' Sanzang said, 'Just so; even carrying a bit of illness with me, there's no help for it.' Wukong said, 'Since we are to leave tomorrow, let me tonight go and catch this demon-spirit, just to see.' Sanzang, startled, said, 'What demon-spirit are you talking about catching now?' Wukong said, 'There's a demon-spirit in this temple — let Old Monkey go and catch it for them.' Tang Sanzang said, 'Disciple, my illness is not yet cured — why do you take up such a notion now?'?」:「'Should that demon have real powers and you fail to subdue it, would that not bring harm upon me as well?' Wukong said, 'How you dampen a man's spirit.''Old Monkey has subdued demons everywhere I've gone — have you ever seen me come off worse against anyone?'。」 『?』」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「『。』。」:「。」'It's only that I never make a move without winning once I do.' Sanzang caught hold of him and said, 'Disciple, the old saying goes well: "When there's a chance to be lenient, be lenient; where you can spare someone, spare them." "How can fretting over things compare to keeping a good heart? How can striving to win compare to the nobility of forbearance?"' Seeing that his Master was pleading earnestly with him and forbidding him to subdue the demon, the Great Sage Sun spoke the plain truth: 'Master, to tell you honestly, that demon here has already eaten people.' Tang Sanzang, greatly alarmed, said, 'Eaten what people?' Wukong said, 'In the three days we have stayed here, six young monks of this temple have already been eaten.' The elder said, '"When the rabbit dies, the fox grieves; a creature mourns its own kind." Since it has eaten monks of this temple, and I too am a monk, I will let you go — only be careful and thorough about it.' Wukong said, 'Say no more — the moment Old Monkey's hand reaches it, it will be done away with.'

Watch him now: before the lamplight he instructed Bajie and Sha Seng to keep watch over the Master, then, beaming with delight, he sprang out of the abbot's quarters and went straight to look at the Buddha hall. Stars were out in the sky, the moon had not yet risen, and the hall inside was pitch dark.西He then breathed forth true fire, lit the glass lamps, beat the drum on the east side, and struck the bell on the west. When the sound had died away, he shook himself and transformed into a young novice monk of only twelve or thirteen years, wearing a short robe of yellow silk over a plain white cotton gown, striking a wooden fish with his hand and chanting sutras with his mouth. He waited until the first watch of the night, but nothing stirred.By the second watch, the waning moon had just risen, when suddenly a gust of wind came whistling by.What a wind:

No sooner had that wind passed than he caught, sharp and sudden, the fragrance of musk and orchid, and the tinkling sound of jade pendants. He at once straightened up and raised his head to look — ah!殿It was a beautiful young woman, coming straight up into the Buddha hall.Wukong, murmuring away in his mouth, kept right on chanting his sutras.:「?」:「。」:「?」:「?」:「。」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「The girl walked up close, threw her arms around him, and said, 'Little monk, what sutra are you chanting?' Wukong said, 'One I made a vow to recite.' The girl said, 'Everyone else is off sleeping in comfort — why are you still chanting sutras?' Wukong said, 'I made a vow to — how could I not recite it?' The girl embraced him and kissed him, saying, 'Come with me round the back for some fun.' Wukong deliberately twisted his head away and said, 'You don't quite understand things.' The girl said, 'Can you read faces?' Wukong said, 'I know a little of it.' The girl said, 'What do you read in my face?' Wukong said, 'I read that you've been sneaking around behind others' backs, and got thrown out by your parents-in-law.' The girl said, 'Wrong, wrong — not that at all.''I —'

'—taking advantage of this starlit, moon-bright night, have come, by some fated bond, a thousand miles to meet you.'。」:「'Let you and I go to the back garden and become mates in joy together.' Hearing this, Wukong nodded to himself in silence, thinking, 'So those foolish monks were all lured by lust, and that is how they lost their lives.'。」:「。」:「。」:「。」"Now she too has come to fool me." He replied casually, "Dear lady, I am a monk still young in years, and know nothing of the affairs of love." The woman said, "Come with me, and I will teach you." Xingzhe laughed inwardly, thinking, "Very well, I'll go along with her and see what she has in mind."

The two of them, arms around shoulders and hands clasped, left the Buddha hall and went straight to the garden behind it.使The monster tripped Xingzhe with a leg-hook, and he fell to the ground.Crying "Dear heart, elder brother!" over and over, she reached out her hand to grab at his private parts.:「。」使Xingzhe thought, "My child, so you really mean to devour old Sun!" But he caught her hand and, using a little sitting-fall technique, flipped the monster over like a windlass and threw her flat on the ground.:「。」:「The monster still cried out, "Dear heart, elder brother, so you know how to throw your own mother down!" Xingzhe thought secretly, "If I don't strike now, when else will I get the chance?:『。』」Indeed: 'He who strikes first gains the advantage; he who strikes later suffers the harm.'" So he clasped his hands together, arched his back, and leapt up, revealing his true form, and swinging up his gold-banded iron rod, struck straight at her head. The monster was quite startled.:「。」She thought to herself, "This little monk is so fierce!" Opening her eyes for a look, she saw it was none other than the disciple of Tang the Elder, the one surnamed Sun.Yet she was not afraid of him either. You ask what sort of monster-spirit this was:

Relying on her own vast magic powers, she at once raised her twin swords, which clanged and rang, parrying left and blocking right, swaying now east, now west.Though Xingzhe was somewhat the stronger, he still could not manage to bring her down.A dark, chill wind rose on every side, and the waning moon gave no light.Just watch the two of them.In the back garden a fine battle raged:

The Great Sage Sun, full of vigor, wielded his rod without the slightest error.便The monster, reckoning she could not hold out against him, suddenly knitted her brows, and a scheme came to mind; she turned and fled.:「Xingzhe shouted, "Vile creature, where do you think you're going?。」退Surrender at once!" But the monster paid him no heed at all, and simply kept retreating.:「!」使When Xingzhe pressed her hard in pursuit, she pulled off the flowered shoe from her left foot, blew a breath of magic upon it, recited a spell, and cried, "Change!" — and it turned into her own likeness, wielding the two swords and dancing forward to meet him;while her true body gave a shake and turned into a gust of clear wind and was gone. And was this not indeed a star of calamity for Sanzang?便She went straight to the abbot's chamber, seized Tang Sanzang, and carried him up onto a cloud; in the dim and misty distance, in the twinkling of an eye, she reached Xiankong Mountain, entered the Bottomless Cave, and ordered her underlings to prepare a vegetarian wedding feast — but no more of that for now.

Now, Xingzhe, fighting on with a heart grown anxious and a temper grown hot, found an opening and struck the monster down with one blow of his rod — only to find it was a single flowered shoe.Xingzhe realized at once that he had fallen for her trick, and hurriedly turned back to look for his master — but there was no master to be found. He saw only the idiot and Sha Seng, mumbling something unintelligible with their mouths.:「。」Xingzhe's chest filled with rage, and heedless of right or wrong, he snatched up his rod and lashed out wildly, shouting over and over, "I'll beat you both to death! I'll beat you both to death!" The idiot was so panicked he had nowhere to run.:「。」:「。」:「Sha Seng, however, was a great general from Vulture Peak, who had seen much of the world, so he spoke gently and softly, coming forward and kneeling down: "Elder Brother, I understand now — you must mean to beat the two of us to death, and then, without going to save our master, head straight home by yourself." Xingzhe said, "Once I've beaten you two to death, I'll go save him myself." Sha Seng said with a smile, "Elder Brother, what kind of talk is that?』。Without the two of us, it would truly be a case of 'a single thread makes no cord, one palm alone claps no sound.'Brother, who would look after the baggage and the horse?仿Better to follow the example of Guan and Bao sharing gold than to imitate Sun and Pang contending in cunning.:『。』。」As the old saying goes: 'To fight a tiger you still need your own brothers; to go into battle you must have father and son together.' I beg Elder Brother to spare us the beating; once it's light we will join our hearts and strength with yours and go to find our master." Although Xingzhe possessed vast magic powers, he was also a reasonable man who understood the moment.便:「Seeing Sha Seng plead so earnestly, he relented and said, "Bajie, Sha Seng, both of you get up.Tomorrow we will go search for our master.。」:「。」滿But you must both put your full strength into it." The idiot, hearing he was spared, was so relieved he could have promised half of heaven, and said, "Brother, leave this entirely to old Pig." The brothers lay there thinking and thinking, unable to sleep at all, longing to nod their heads and summon out the sun from Fusang, or blow away with one breath all the stars filling the sky.

:「?」:「The three of them simply sat until dawn, and as they were packing up to leave, the monks of the temple had already come to block the gate and ask, "Where are you gentlemen going?" Xingzhe said with a smile, "It's not easy to say.Yesterday I boasted before everyone that I would catch the monster for them; well, the monster I never caught, but instead I've lost my own master.。」:「We're off to search for our master." The monks, alarmed, said, "Sirs, over such a trifling matter we have gone and implicated our venerable teacher;?」:「。」:「。」but where will you go to search?" Xingzhe said, "I have a place in mind to look for him." The monks said hastily, "If you must go, don't be in such a rush — first eat some morning fare." And they hurried to bring out two or three basins of soup and rice.:「。」:「Bajie ate every bit of it clean, saying, "Good monks, once we've found our master, we'll come back here to enjoy ourselves again." Xingzhe said, "Are you still thinking of coming back here to eat their food? :「Go and see whether that woman is still in the Hall of the Heavenly Kings." The monks said, "Sir, she's gone, she's gone. She stayed the one night, and by the next day she had vanished."

Xingzhe, quite pleased, took his leave of the monks and had Bajie and Sha Seng lead the horse and shoulder the load, and they set off straight back toward the east.:「?」:「Bajie said, "Brother, you've got it wrong — why are we heading east again?" Xingzhe said, "How would you know? The woman we found tied up the other day in the Black Pine Forest — with old Sun's fiery golden eyes, I saw right through her, but the two of you took her for a good person. It was she who today would have devoured the monks, and she who has carried off our master.A fine 'goddess' you two rescued indeed.。」:「Now that she's carried off our master, we must go back and search along the old road." The two of them sighed in admiration, "Good, good, truly — rough on the outside but careful within.。」Let's go, let's go!"

The three of them hurried on into the forest, where they saw:

Xingzhe, his heart burning with anxiety, drew out his rod and shook himself into the very form he had worn when he wreaked havoc in Heaven: three heads and six arms, six hands wielding three rods, thrashing about wildly through the forest with a great clatter.:「。」:「。」:「Seeing this, Bajie said, "Sha Seng, Elder Brother has worked himself into a fury — unable to find our master, he's gone half mad with rage." As it turned out, Xingzhe's thrashing along the way had beaten out two old men: one was the Mountain God, the other the Local Deity, who came forward and knelt down, saying, "Great Sage, the Mountain God and Local Deity have come to pay their respects." Bajie said, "What fine efficacy — thrashing along the way and beating out a Mountain God and a Local Deity;。」:「if he keeps thrashing a while longer, he'll even beat out the Grand Duke Jupiter himself." Xingzhe demanded, "Mountain God, Local Deity, how dare you be so insolent — banding together with bandits here in this place. When the bandits succeed in their robbery, they buy a few pigs and sheep to offer you in sacrifice, and you've also joined forces with monsters, banding together to carry off my master.Where is he hidden now?。」:「Confess the truth at once, and you'll be spared a beating." The two deities, alarmed, said, "Great Sage, you wrong us.The monster does not dwell on this lowly god's mountain, and is not under this lowly god's jurisdiction.。」:「。」:「But as for the place from which the wind sounded that night, this lowly god knows a little about it." Xingzhe said, "Since you know, tell me everything, one by one." The Local Deity said, "That monster carried your master off due south of here, a thousand li away.Over there is a mountain called Xiankong Mountain — the Mountain of the Sunken Void.In the mountain there is a cave, called the Bottomless Cave.。」It was the monster from that mountain who came here in disguise and carried him off." Hearing this, Xingzhe was secretly alarmed at heart. He dismissed the Mountain God and Local Deity with a shout, withdrew his magic form, and resumed his true appearance, saying to Bajie and Sha Seng, "Our master has been taken far away." Bajie said, "If it's far, then let's mount the clouds and chase after him."

Such a fine idiot — with one bound he raised a wild wind and went first;close behind, Sha Seng rode upon a cloud;the white horse, being by origin a dragon prince, bore the baggage and likewise trod upon wind and mist;and the Great Sage at once mounted his cloud-somersault, heading straight south. Before long, they already saw a great mountain blocking the foot of their clouds. The three of them reined in the horse and brought their clouds to a halt. They looked at the mountain, and saw:

:「。」:「?」:「。」:「。」:「?」:「。」Bajie said, "Brother, this mountain is so steep and forbidding, there must surely be monsters and demons here." Xingzhe said, "No need to say it — where the mountain is high there are naturally monsters, and where the ridge is steep, how could there fail to be spirits?" He called out, "Sha Seng, you and I will wait here for now, while Bajie goes down first into the mountain hollow to make some inquiries — see which path is easiest to travel, whether there truly is a cave dwelling, and where its gate opens, and look into everything carefully, so that we can all go together to find our master and save him." Bajie said, "Just my rotten luck, made to take the blame first again." Xingzhe said, "Last night you said it was all up to you — why balk now?" Bajie said, "No need to shout, I'll go." So the idiot set down his rake, shook out his robe, and empty-handed, leaped down the high mountain to search out a path.

As for what came of this trip, good or ill, we do not yet know — listen to the explanation in the next chapter.

What it’s about

At Zhenhai Chan Monastery, monks begin dying after the rescued woman secretly feeds on them. Sanzang also becomes seriously ill, delaying the journey for three days. Wukong treats his master's sickness with an improvised diagnosis and medicine, while the monastery's alarm confirms his earlier suspicion that their forest companion was no helpless traveler. Compassion has admitted a predator into a religious refuge, but Sanzang's own frailty keeps the disciples from simply leaving.

As Sanzang recovers, Wukong investigates the deaths and watches for the concealed spirit. The woman turns her desire toward the monk himself; despite Wukong's precautions, she uses supernatural deception to abduct Sanzang from the monastery and carry him underground. The episode changes from a murder mystery into a rescue pursuit. Its sharpest reversal is spatial: the safe monastery proves penetrable, while the apparent victim from the open forest becomes mistress of a hidden cave.

When it was written 背景

Illness temporarily reduces the sacred pilgrim to an ordinary dependent body, and the monks' deaths make hospitality carry a communal cost. The chapter pairs two kinds of discernment: Wukong reads demonic traces, but he must also read Sanzang's pulse and symptoms. Learners can follow 病, 藥, 和尚 and 妖精 as medical care gives way to detection. The spirit's appetite mixes blood-feeding with erotic possession, a recurring pattern in which the threat to scripture acquisition is not only death but forced marriage and the diversion of religious celibacy.
