The Rescued Girl Proves to Be a Mouse-Demon in Disguise

080Chapter 80

The story goes that the ruler, ministers, and common people of the Kingdom of Bhikshus escorted Tang Seng and his three disciples out of the city for a full twenty li, still unwilling to part with them.Sanzang reluctantly descended from his palanquin, mounted his horse, and took his leave, riding on; those who watched him off did not turn back until his form had vanished from sight. The four travelers journeyed for a good long while, and once more winter waned and spring came to its end; everywhere they looked were wildflowers and mountain trees, scenery fragrant and lush.Ahead once again there appeared a towering mountain with lofty ridges.:「Sanzang's heart grew fearful, and he asked, "Disciple, is there a path through the high mountain ahead, or none at all?。」:「We must be very careful." Xingzhe laughed and said, "Master, these words of yours do not sound like those of someone who has traveled long roads — they sound rather like a young lord or nobleman's son, one who views the sky from the bottom of a well.:『。』?」:「。」:「As the old saying goes: 'The mountain does not block the road; the road of itself finds its way through the mountain.' Why speak of there being a path or not?" Sanzang said, "Though it is true the mountain does not block the road, I fear that in steep and dangerous places monsters may breed, and in dense, deep thickets demons may emerge." Bajie said, "Set your mind at ease, set your mind at ease.。」We are drawing near to the Western Paradise now, not far off at all; rest assured there will be peace and no trouble."

As master and disciples were speaking, before they knew it they had reached the foot of the mountain.:「Xingzhe took out his golden-hooped rod, climbed up onto a rocky cliff, and called out, "Master, this is the road that winds around the mountain, and it is very easy going.。」Come quickly, come quickly." The elder had no choice but to set his mind at ease and urge his horse on.:「。」Sha Seng said, "Second Elder Brother, you carry the load on your shoulder for a while." And indeed Bajie took up the carrying-pole and shouldered it, while Sha Seng held the reins, the old master sat steady in his carved saddle, and following Xingzhe they all made for the road up on the mountain cliff. Now look at that mountain:

:「The old master slowly took in the mountain scenery, and suddenly, hearing the cry of birds, he was again stirred by thoughts of home; reining in his horse, he called out, "Disciples!

:「Xingzhe said, "Master, you are forever dwelling on thoughts of home — this is not at all like someone who has left the household life.Set your mind at ease and press on; do not worry so much.:『。』」 :「The ancients said: 'If you wish to attain wealth and rank, you must put in mortal effort.'" Sanzang said, "What you say, disciple, is reasonable enough, but I do not know where the road to the Western Heaven still lies." Bajie said, "Master, our Buddha Tathagata could not bear to part with those Three Stores of scriptures, and knowing we meant to fetch them, I suppose he has moved them elsewhere;?」:「otherwise, how is it we simply never arrive?" Sha Seng said, "Don't talk nonsense — just keep following Big Brother.。」Only keep at it with effort over time, and in the end there will surely come a day of arrival."

As master and disciples were chatting idly like this, they saw once more a stretch of dark pine forest, vast and dense.:「Tang Seng grew afraid, and again called out, "Wukong, we have only just come through that rugged mountain road — how is it we now meet with this deep, dark pine forest?。」:「?」:「?『。』We must be careful." Xingzhe said, "What is there to fear from it?" Sanzang said, "What kind of talk is that? 'Even when trusting straightforwardness, trust it straightforwardly; still guard against kindness that is not kind.' I too have passed through quite a few pine forests with you — was any of them as deep and far-reaching as this one?Just look:

The Great Sage Sun, unafraid in the least, wielded his iron rod and went ahead to hack open a path, leading Tang Seng straight into the deep forest.Ambling along at their ease, they traveled half a day and still saw no way out of the forest.:「西Tang Seng called out, "Disciple, all along our journey west there have been countless rugged and perilous mountains and forests; fortunately this place is clear and elegant, and the road has been peaceful throughout. The rare flowers and strange plants in this forest are truly delightful and full of charm.I wish to sit here a while: first, to rest the horse;。」:「。」and second, my stomach is hungry — go somewhere and beg a little food for me to eat." Xingzhe said, "Master, please dismount, and old Monkey will go beg for food." The elder duly dismounted, and Bajie tied the horse to a tree.Sha Seng set down the luggage, took out the alms bowl, and handed it to Xingzhe.:「。」Xingzhe said, "Master, sit here calmly and do not be frightened; I will be back as soon as I go." Sanzang sat upright in the shade of the pines, while Bajie and Sha Seng went off to look for flowers and fruit to pass the time idly.

Now, the Great Sage somersaulted up into midair, held steady on his cloud-light, and looked back down, and saw over the pine forest auspicious clouds drifting faintly and blessed mists swirling thick.:「He suddenly cried out in spite of himself, "Good! Excellent!!」Excellent!" Do you know why he cried out in praise?。「It was because he was praising Tang Seng, saying that he was the reincarnation of Elder Golden Cicada, a good man who had cultivated through ten lifetimes, and so had this auspicious glow crowning his head. "As for old Monkey here, five hundred years ago, at the time I wrought great havoc in Heaven, I roamed the corners of the seas and ran wild across the ends of the earth;I gathered a host of spirits and styled myself the Great Sage Equal to Heaven;I subdued dragons and tamed tigers, and struck my name from the register of death.穿I wore a golden crown with three peaks upon my head, dressed in golden armor upon my body, held the golden-hooped rod in my hand, and trod cloud-stepping boots upon my feet.Under my command were forty-seven thousand bands of demons, and all of them called me Grandfather Great Sage — truly I amounted to something as a person. Now, having escaped that calamity from Heaven, I have humbled myself low and become your disciple.。」I think that since the master's head is crowned with auspicious clouds and blessed mists, once he returns straight to the Land of the East, he is bound to gain some great reward, and old Monkey too is bound to attain the true fruit."

Just as he was praising himself in this way, he suddenly saw beneath the forest to the south a wisp of black vapor, bubbling and roiling upward.:「Xingzhe was greatly alarmed and said, "There must certainly be something evil within that black vapor.。」My Bajie and Sha Seng surely would not be able to let off any such black vapor." The Great Sage hung there in midair, unable to make out clearly what it was.

》,」。Now to speak of Sanzang: sitting in the forest, with his mind clear and his nature perceived, he was reciting the Prajnaparamita Hridaya Sutra, when suddenly he heard a faint, plaintive cry of "Help! Save me!":「Sanzang was greatly startled and said, "Merciful Heaven, merciful Heaven! In such a deep forest as this, who could be calling out?。」穿It must be someone frightened half to death by wolves, insects, tigers, or leopards; let me go and see." The elder rose to his feet and stepped forward, passing through thousand-year-old cypresses, threading past ten-thousand-year-old pines, clinging to vines and grasping creepers, drawing near to look.使There he saw a woman bound to a great tree, her upper half tied to the tree with vine-cords, her lower half buried in the earth.:「?」The elder planted his feet and asked her a single question: "Woman Bodhisattva, what is the matter, that you are bound here like this?" Ay!Clearly this creature was a demon, but the elder, with his mortal eyes and common flesh, could not recognize it as such. When the demon saw him come to question her, tears gushed forth like a spring.Look at her: peach-blossom cheeks streaming with tears, a face fit to make fish sink and geese fall from the sky;starry eyes brimming with sorrow, a beauty to shame the moon and put flowers to shame.:「The elder truly dared not draw near, and again opened his mouth to ask, "Woman Bodhisattva, what crime have you truly committed?。」:「Tell this poor monk, so that I may rightly save you." The demon, with cunning words and flowery speech, false in feeling and deceitful in intent, hastened to answer, "Master, my family dwells in the Kingdom of Poor Women, more than two hundred li from here.My parents are still living, extremely fond of doing good, and all their lives on close and loving terms with kin and friends. The season came round to Qingming, and they invited all our relatives and the whole household, old and young, to sweep the ancestral graves; a whole procession of sedan-chairs and horses went out to the wild countryside. When we reached the graves, we laid out the offerings, and just as we had finished burning the paper horses, we suddenly heard gongs sounding and drums beating, and a band of bandits rushed out, wielding knives and clubs, shouting and charging at us in a killing rage, so that we were all frightened out of our wits, our souls scattered. My parents and all our relatives, those who managed to get a horse or a sedan-chair, each fled to save their own lives;your servant here was still young.忿I could not run fast, and fell to the ground in fright, and was carried off by the band of bandits into the mountains, where the Chief Bandit-King wanted to make me his wife, the Second King wanted to make me his consort, and the Third and Fourth Kings all coveted my beauty too, so that seventy or eighty of them quarreled and fought all together, none willing to yield, and so they bound your servant here in the forest and scattered, going their separate ways.It has now been five days and five nights, and my life is all but at its end; before long I shall die.I do not know in what past life my ancestors accumulated such merit, that today I should meet with you, reverend master, coming to this place.。」I beg you, in your boundless mercy, to save my life; even in the Nine Springs below, I shall never forget this kindness." So saying, her tears fell like rain.

:「。」:「。」:「?」:「Sanzang, being truly compassionate of heart, could not help but let tears fall as well, and with a choked voice called out, "Disciples!" Now Bajie and Sha Seng were in the forest looking for flowers and fruit, and suddenly hearing the master call out in such a mournful voice, the idiot said, "Friar Sand, the master has recognized some kin here." Sha Seng laughed and said, "Second Brother, you're talking nonsense — we've traveled all this while and haven't met a single soul we know, so where would kin come from?" Bajie said, "If it's not kin, then why is the master weeping there with someone?。」:「?」:「。」Let's you and I go and see." Sha Seng duly turned back to the old spot, leading the horse and carrying the load, and coming up before him called, "Master, what is the matter?" Tang Seng pointed at the tree and called out, "Bajie, untie the woman Bodhisattva and save her life." The idiot, not stopping to judge right from wrong, went at once to set about it.

:「Now to speak of the Great Sage: hanging there in midair, he saw the black vapor grow thicker still, utterly covering over the auspicious light, and said aloud, "Bad, bad!The black vapor has covered and darkened the auspicious light — could it not be that some demon is harming my master?。」Begging for food is a small matter after all; let me go and look after my master first." So he turned his cloud back and dropped down into the forest, and there he saw Bajie in a great fluster untying the cords.Xingzhe stepped forward, seized him by the ear, and flung him down with a thud.:「?」:「The idiot, raising his head to look, scrambled up and said, "The master told me to save someone — how is it that you, relying on your strength, threw me down like that?" Xingzhe laughed and said, "Brother, do not untie her.。」:「?」:「?」:「She is a demon, up to some trick, deceiving us." Sanzang shouted, "You reckless ape, talking nonsense again! How can you tell, just by looking at a woman like this, that she is a demon?" Xingzhe said, "Master, you simply do not know — all this was old Monkey's own trade once, these tricks for wanting to eat human flesh; how would you recognize it?" Bajie pouted and said, "Master, don't believe this Bimawen fooling you — this woman is a person from a family around here.We have come a long way from the Land of the East, and have no dealings with her, nor are we any kin of hers — how can he say she's a demon?。」:「He wants to send us off ahead so that he can somersault back here alone and work his magic to arrange some sly business with her — sneaking in through the back door, as it were." Xingzhe shouted, "You clumsy lout, don't talk such nonsense.西Ever since old Monkey set out on this journey west, when have I ever done anything shameful? :「It is you — one who prizes lust over life and forgets righteousness for gain, a good-for-nothing who can't tell right from wrong — who would be the one tricked into becoming someone's adopted son-in-law and end up tied to a tree." Sanzang said, "Enough, enough.。」:「Bajie, your elder martial brother's judgment is usually not wrong; since he speaks this way, let us not concern ourselves with her — let us go." Xingzhe was greatly pleased and said, "Good, good, the master's fated life will be spared after all.。」Please mount your horse; once out of the pine forest, there will be some household where we can beg food for you to eat." The four of them accordingly went on their way together, leaving the demon behind.

:「Now to tell of the demon, bound to the tree, gnashing her teeth in bitter hatred, she said, "For years I have heard people say that Sun Wukong's magic powers are vast and mighty; today, seeing him, indeed the words were no idle talk. This Tang Seng is one who has cultivated from a virgin body, his primal masculine essence not yet spent, and I meant to seize him to unite with me, so as to become a Grand Monad Golden Immortal; who would have thought this monkey would see through my scheme and rescue him away.If only the cords had been untied and I had been let down, I could have seized him at once and made him mine, could I not?But now, carried off by that string of scattered, idle talk of his, has this not been labor spent for nothing?。」Let me call out to him a couple more times and see what happens." The demon, without stirring the cords at all, sent a few sweet and kindly-sounding words riding on a following wind, faintly blowing them into Tang Seng's ears.Do you know what she called out?:「?」She cried out, "Master, ah — you would leave a living person's life unsaved, yet go with a guilty conscience to worship the Buddha and fetch scriptures — to what end?"

:「。」:「?」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「Tang Seng, hearing this cry again from atop his horse, at once reined in and called, "Wukong, go and save that woman, take her down." Xingzhe said, "Master, you were just riding along — how is it you thought of her again?" Tang Seng said, "She is calling out again over there." Xingzhe asked, "Bajie, did you hear it?" Bajie said, "My ears are big and covered them up — I didn't hear anything." He asked again, "Sha Seng, did you hear it?" Sha Seng said, "I was walking ahead carrying the load and wasn't paying attention — I didn't hear it either." Xingzhe said, "Old Monkey didn't hear it either.Master, what was it she called out??」:「How is it that only you heard it?" Tang Seng said, "What she called out was reasonable.:『?』『。』。」:「She said: 'You would leave a living person's life unsaved, yet go with a guilty conscience to worship the Buddha and fetch scriptures — to what end?' 'To save one life is better than building a seven-story pagoda.' Go quickly and save her, bring her down — that is worth more than fetching scriptures and worshipping the Buddha." Xingzhe laughed and said, "Master, once you start wanting to be kind like this, there's no medicine that can cure it.西Just think — since you left the Land of the East and journeyed west, you have passed through many a mountain range and encountered no end of demons, who often seized you and carried you off into their caves.使When old Monkey came to save you, wielding the iron rod, I have often struck dead thousands upon thousands of them.?」:「:『。』。」:「Yet today, for the life of one single demon, you cannot bear it, and must go save her?" Tang Seng said, "Disciple, ah, the ancients said: 'Do not fail to do good merely because it is small; do not do evil merely because it is small.' Let us go and save her after all." Xingzhe said, "Master, since you insist on this, this burden here — old Monkey cannot bear the responsibility for it.If you wish to save her, I dare not urge you too hard against it: I have argued my case a while now, and you only grow angry with me.。」:「。」Go and save her as you please." Tang Seng said, "Monkey-head, say no more — sit here, and let Bajie and me go save her."

Tang Seng went back into the forest, and had Bajie untie the upper half of the cords, then use his rake to dig out the lower half of her body. The demon, stumbling in her shoes, straightening her skirt, followed Tang Seng out of the pine forest, all smiles, and came before Xingzhe.Xingzhe merely kept up a cold, unceasing laugh.:「?」:「。」:「Tang Seng scolded him, "Reckless ape-head, what are you laughing at?" Xingzhe said, "I am laughing that your luck has turned to meet a good friend, and your fortune has come round to encounter a fair lady." Sanzang scolded him again, "Reckless macaque, talking nonsense!西祿退?」:「Ever since I came out of my mother's womb I have been a monk, and now, obeying the imperial edict, I journey west with a devout heart to worship the Buddha and seek the scriptures — I am no man after riches and rank, so how could my fortune have turned bad?" Xingzhe laughed and said, "Master, though you have been a monk since childhood, you have only ever studied sutras and recited the Buddha's name, and have never encountered the laws and statutes of royal government. This woman is young and comely in appearance, and you and I are men who have left the household life; traveling the same road together with her, should we happen to meet ill-intentioned people who seize us and hand us over to the authorities, then no matter how we explain it as fetching scriptures and worshipping the Buddha, they will all charge it as an affair of illicit love;even if there were no such matter, they would still charge us with abducting and trafficking a person: the master would have his ordination certificate confiscated and be beaten half to death;Bajie would be charged and sent off to a penal garrison;Sha Seng too would be charged and sent off to man a relay station;。」:「and old Monkey too would not come away clean — however clever my tongue, however I might argue and plead, I too would be charged with some offense." Sanzang shouted, "Don't talk such nonsense! Surely, in the end, if I save her life, what trouble could that possibly bring upon us?。」:「。」:「?」:「Once we have brought her along, whatever happens, it shall all fall upon me." Xingzhe said, "Master, though you say the responsibility falls on you, you do not realize that far from saving her, you are instead harming her." Sanzang said, "I save her out of the forest, so that she may keep her life — how could that instead be harming her?" Xingzhe said, "Had she stayed bound there in the forest, whether three or five days, or ten days or half a month, with no food to eat, she would have starved to death, but at least her body would have remained whole in returning to the underworld. But now, bringing her out like this — you ride a swift horse and travel like the wind, and we can only follow along behind you, while this woman has small bound feet and finds it hard to take a step — how could she keep up with us walking??」If at some point we leave her behind, and she should happen to meet with wolves, insects, tigers, or leopards, and be swallowed in a single gulp, would that not be, instead, the taking of her life?"

:「?」:「。」:「?」──「?」:「。」:「。」:「『。』?」:「便?」:「Sanzang said, "Indeed, indeed — this is a matter you have thought through well; how, then, should we handle it?" Xingzhe laughed and said, "Carry her up, and let her ride double on the horse with you." Sanzang, pondering, said, "How could it look right for me to share a horse with her?" — "Then how is she to travel?" Sanzang said, "Have Bajie carry her on his back and walk." Xingzhe laughed, "The idiot's good fortune has arrived." Bajie said, "'On a long road, even a light load feels heavy.' Having me carry a person on my back — what good fortune is there in that?" Xingzhe said, "With that long snout of yours, carrying her, you could turn your snout back round and exchange a few sweet, private words with her — wouldn't that be to your advantage?" Hearing this, Bajie pounded his chest and stamped in a fit, saying, "No good, no good.I would rather let the master beat me a few strokes and bear the pain.Carrying her on my back, I would never come away clean of suspicion — Elder Brother has always been one to smear people with false accusations.。」:「I won't carry her, and that's final." Sanzang said, "Very well, very well.。」:「。」:「I can still manage to walk a few steps myself; let me get down and walk slowly along with her, and have Bajie simply lead the empty horse." Xingzhe laughed loudly, "The idiot has struck a fine bargain after all — the master is taking care to have you just lead the horse." Sanzang said, "Monkey-head, talking nonsense again.:『。』The ancients said: 'A horse may travel a thousand li, but no one can get there by himself without walking.' Suppose I walk slowly along the road — would you simply abandon me and go on ahead? If I go slowly, then you all go slowly too.。」:「。」Let us all together, along with this woman Bodhisattva, walk down the mountain, and when we reach some monastery or temple, some place where people dwell, leave her there — that too will count as our having saved her once." Xingzhe said, "What the master says is reasonable; please, let us go on ahead quickly."

Sanzang walked on ahead, Sha Seng carried the load, Bajie led the empty horse and guided the woman along, while Xingzhe carried his iron rod, and the whole party pressed onward.殿Before they had gone twenty or thirty li, the sky was turning to dusk, when once more they saw a towering hall and pavilion.:「宿。」:「。」 Sanzang said, "Disciple, that must surely be some monastery or temple; let us lodge there for the night and set off early tomorrow." Xingzhe said, "What the master says is right; let us all move along a bit faster." In a moment they arrived before the gate, and he instructed them, "You all stand back a little way, and let me go in first to ask for lodging; if there is a convenient place, I will send someone to call you." The others all stood beneath the shade of the willows, while only Xingzhe, holding his iron rod, kept watch over the woman.

The elder strode forward, and saw that the gate was leaning east and west, broken and scattered.Pushing it open to look, he could not help feeling a pang of sorrow in his heart: the long corridors were silent, the ancient temple desolate;滿moss covered the courtyard, wormwood and brambles filled the paths;only fireflies served as flickering lamps, only the croaking of frogs took the place of the water-clock.The elder suddenly burst into tears.Truly it was:

There is a poem to prove it.The poem says:

Sanzang steeled his courage and walked in through the second gate.He saw that the bell tower and drum tower had both collapsed; only a bronze bell remained, planted in the ground, its upper half as white as snow, its lower half as blue as indigo. It turned out that after so many years, the upper part had been bleached white by rain, while the lower part had turned the green-blue of bronze from the damp earth.:「Sanzang stroked the bell with his hand and cried aloud: 'O bell, you once hung roaring atop a high tower, your sound once rang far from painted beams. You once announced the dawn at the cock's crow, and once saw off the dusk when day grew late.I know not where the priest who cast your bronze has gone, nor where the smith who forged you now dwells.。」I think the two of them have returned to the underworld — he leaves no trace, and you make no sound.'

The elder's loud lament unwittingly startled someone within the temple.Inside there was a priest who tended the incense fires; hearing a human voice, he scrambled up, picked up a broken brick, and flung it at the bell — the bell rang out with a clang. This gave the elder such a fright that he fell down; struggling up to flee, he tripped over a tree root and fell again with a thud.:「The elder lay sprawled on the ground, and raising his head, cried out again: 'O bell, just as this poor monk was lamenting over you, suddenly you rang out with a clang.西。」I suppose that since no one comes along this road to the Western Heaven, over the long years you have turned into a spirit.'

:「The priest hurried forward and grabbed hold of him, saying: 'Please rise, my lord.。」:「It has nothing to do with the bell turning into a spirit — it was I who just struck the bell and made it ring.' Sanzang raised his head, and seeing how ugly and dark his face was, said: 'Are you perhaps some goblin or evil spirit?I am no ordinary man — I have come from the Great Tang, and among my followers are disciples who can subdue dragons and tame tigers.。」:「If you cross them, your life will be hard to preserve.' The priest knelt down and said: 'My lord, have no fear.I am no evil spirit — I am the priest of this temple who tends the incense fires.Just now, hearing your lordship's kind words of praise, I wished to come out and welcome you;but fearing it might be some evil ghost knocking at the gate, I picked up a broken brick and struck the bell once to steady my nerves before I dared come out.。」:「Please rise, my lord.' Only then did Tang Seng compose himself and say: 'Abbot, you nearly frightened me to death.。」Take me inside.'

The priest led Tang Seng on, straight to within the third gate, where the scene was quite different from outside. There he saw:

Seeing this, Sanzang dared not go further in, and asked: 'Priest, the front of this place is in such a wretched state, yet the back is so tidy and orderly — why is that?' The priest laughed and said: 'My lord, these mountains are full of evil spirits and fierce bandits. On clear days they go about the hills plundering, and when the sky turns overcast they come to hide in the temple, where they push over the Buddha statues to sit on as cushions and haul away the timbers to burn for fire. The monks of this temple are weak and dare not argue with them, so they gave over these ruined front buildings for the bandits to lodge in, and instead solicited new donations from patrons to build this other compound.西。」:「。」The pure and the mixed each have their place — such is the way of things here in the West.' Sanzang said: 'So that is how it is.'

」。As they walked on, he saw five large characters above the mountain gate, reading 'Zhenhai Chan Grove Temple.'He had just lifted his foot to step through the gate when suddenly he saw a monk come walking out.Look at what manner of man he was:

The lama monk came out through the gate, and seeing that Sanzang had clear brows and fine eyes, a broad forehead and flat crown, ears hanging to his shoulders, and hands reaching past his knees — looking just like an arhat descended to earth, altogether handsome and refined —滿he stepped forward and took hold of him, his whole face beaming with smiles, pinching his hands and feet, stroking his nose, and tugging his ears, to show his warm affection.:「?」:「西He led him by the hand into the abbot's chamber, and after the courtesies were exchanged, he asked: 'Venerable teacher, where do you come from?' Sanzang said: 'This disciple is an envoy sent by the court of the Great Tang in the Land of the East, journeying to the Great Thunderclap Temple in the Western land of India to worship the Buddha and fetch the scriptures.宿Having just arrived at your honored region as night fell, I have come specially to your monastery to beg a night's lodging, and will set off early tomorrow.便。」:「I hope you will kindly grant me this small favor.' The monk laughed and said: 'You do us too much honor, you do us too much honor. It's not that we willingly wished to become monks — it's only because when our parents bore us, our fates were afflicted by the 'Canopy Star,' and our families could not raise us, so we were given up to renounce the world and become monks.。」:「。」:「西Since we have become disciples of the Buddha's gate, we must never speak empty, deceitful words.' Sanzang said: 'I speak the honest truth.' The monk said: 'How great a distance is it from the Land of the East to the Western Heaven?Along the way there are mountains, in the mountains there are caves, and in the caves there are spirits.?」:「Think of it — traveling alone as you are, and looking so delicate and tender besides — how could you possibly look like someone fetching scriptures?' Sanzang said: 'What you say, Abbot, is indeed true. How could this poor monk have reached here alone?。」:「?」:「。」:「I have three disciples who, when they meet a mountain, open a road, and when they meet water, build a bridge; they protect me, and that is how I have reached your monastery.' The monk said: 'Where are your three worthy disciples now?' Sanzang said: 'They are waiting outside the mountain gate.' The monk was alarmed and said: 'Master, you do not know that here we have tigers and wolves, evil bandits, and ghosts and monsters that harm people.Even in broad daylight we dare not go far, and before night even falls we shut our doors.?」:「。」And at this hour you still leave people outside?' He called out: 'Disciples, hurry and go invite them in.'

Two little lama boys ran out, and seeing Xingzhe, were so frightened they fell down;then seeing Bajie, they fell down again.:「。」:「?」:「Scrambling up, they went flying back inside, saying: 'Grandfather, our luck has run out — your disciples are nowhere to be seen, there are only three or four monsters standing at the gate.' Sanzang asked: 'What do they look like?' The little monks said: 'One has the mouth of the Thunder God, one has a mouth like a pestle handle, and one has a blue face and jutting fangs.。」:「Beside them there is a woman, who indeed has a glossy-haired, powdered face.' Sanzang laughed and said: 'You don't recognize them. Those three ugly ones are my disciples.。」:「That woman is one whose life I saved in a pine forest.' The lama said: 'Oh, grandfather!?」:「Such a fine, handsome master — how did you come to find such ugly disciples?' Sanzang said: 'Ugly as they are, they are all useful.。」Go quickly and invite them in — if you delay any longer, that one with the Thunder God's mouth may cause trouble; he wasn't born of ordinary human parents, and he'll come bursting in on his own.'

:「The little monk hurried out at once and, trembling, knelt down and said: 'My lords, Lord Tang invites you in.' Bajie laughed and said: 'Brother, if he's inviting us, fine, but why is he trembling like this?' Xingzhe said: 'He's frightened at the sight of our ugly looks.' Bajie said: 'That's nonsense.?」:「。」We were simply born this way — who would want to be ugly on purpose?' Xingzhe said: 'Well, tidy up that ugliness a little.' The idiot actually tucked his snout into his robe, lowered his head, and led the horse;Sha Seng carried the pole with the luggage;Xingzhe walked behind holding his cudgel, keeping watch over the woman: and so the whole party went in.穿They passed through the collapsed halls and corridors, entered within the third gate, tied up the horse, and set down the load. They entered the abbot's chamber, exchanged greetings with the lama monk, and took their seats in order. The monk went inside and brought out seventy or eighty little lamas; after the courtesies were completed, they prepared a vegetarian meal to entertain the guests.Truly it was:

What happened after they left the temple is not yet known; listen to the next chapter for the explanation.

What it’s about

Crossing Black-Pine Forest, the pilgrims hear a woman crying for help and find her bound to a tree. She says that robbers killed her parents and left her there. Wukong distrusts the scene and urges the party onward, but Sanzang cannot accept abandoning a person in distress. He orders Bajie to cut her loose, and the rescued woman follows the travelers as they continue through the darkening forest.

At dusk the party reaches Zhenhai Chan Monastery. The resident monks recognize Sanzang as a scripture pilgrim from the Tang and receive master and disciples with formal enthusiasm, while the woman they brought from the forest is also given shelter. Hosts and guests exchange accounts of their journeys and sit down to a vegetarian meal. The chapter closes on this welcome: Wukong's suspicion remains unresolved, but no illness, disappearance, killing or investigation has yet disturbed the monastery.

When it was written 背景

The chapter sets compassion beside discernment without resolving their tension. A bound traveler presents the strongest possible claim on Sanzang's mercy, while Wukong reads the staged appearance as a supernatural warning; neither can make the other inhabit his way of seeing. Arrival at Zhenhai Chan Monastery then shifts the same question into the conventions of Buddhist hospitality, as hosts accept unknown guests on the strength of need and religious fellowship. Learners should track 哭, 救, 師父 and 寺: cries prompt rescue, disagreement tests the master-disciple bond, and a forest encounter ends inside an apparently orderly communal meal.
