Monkey Enters the Demon's Belly to Subdue Him
第075回Chapter 75
The story goes that the Great Sage Sun entered the mouth of the cave and looked about on both sides.只見:He saw only this:
不多時,行入二層門裡看時,呀!Before long, he walked in through the second gate and looked—ah! This place was quite different from the outside: clear and rare, secluded and elegant, lovely and spacious and level;左右有瑤草仙花,前後有喬松翠竹。to left and right grew jasper grasses and immortal flowers, before and behind stood tall pines and kingfisher-green bamboo. He walked another seven or eight li or so before he finally reached the third gate. Slipping his body aside and stealing a glance within, he saw three old demons seated high above, exceedingly fierce and hideous. The one in the middle was formed thus:

Ranged on the two sides stood a hundred or so chieftains great and small, every one of them fully armored and helmeted, neat and orderly, their might awesome and their killing air surging.
When Pilgrim saw this, his heart rejoiced, and he was not the least bit afraid; striding boldly straight in through the gate, he took off his clapper and bell, and called out upward, "Great King." The three old demons laughed and asked, "Little Whirlwind, so you've come?" Pilgrim answered, "I've come." "You went to patrol the mountain—what did you learn of Sun Wukong's whereabouts?" Pilgrim said, "Great King above, I dare not even mention it." The old demon said, "Why dare you not speak of it?" Pilgrim said, "Obeying the Great King's order, I struck my clapper and bell and was walking along, when suddenly I raised my head and saw a person crouched there grinding a cudgel-bar, looking for all the world like a Road-Clearing God; were he to stand up, he would surely be ten-odd zhang in length. He dipped a handful of water from the rocks by the ravine cliff, ground the bar a while, and muttered something, saying that his cudgel-bar had not yet shown its divine power here, and that once he had ground it bright he would come and strike the Great King. For this reason I knew he was Sun Wukong, and came specially to report it."
When the old demon heard these words, sweat broke out all over his body, and trembling with fright he said, "Brother, I said we should not provoke Tang Seng. His disciple's magic power is vast; he has made preparations beforehand, grinding his cudgel to strike us—what shall we do?" He ordered, "Little ones, call in all the small fry from outside the cave, great and small, shut the gates, and let him pass on by." Among the chieftains one who knew reported, "Great King, the little demons outside the gate have already all scattered." The old demon said, "How have they all scattered? I suppose they have heard that the wind is ill. Quick, shut the gates! Quick, shut the gates!" The assembled demons clanged and banged, bolting the front and back gates fast shut.
Pilgrim, alarmed at heart, thought: "Now that the gates are shut, if he questions me further about household details and I cannot answer, will that not give the game away and get me caught? Let me frighten him once more, so as to make him keep the gates open, and give myself a way to run." So he stepped forward again and said, "Great King, he said something else, not good at all." The old demon said, "What else did he say?" Pilgrim said, "He said he would flay the First Great King, scrape the bones of the Second Great King, and draw out the sinews of the Third Great King. If you shut the gates and do not go out, he can transform himself; in an instant he might turn into a fly and slip in through a crack in the door, and carry us all off—what would we do then?" The old demon said, "Brothers, be on your guard. In this cave of mine, year after year there has never been a single fly; if ever a fly comes in, it is bound to be Sun Wukong." Pilgrim laughed inwardly: "I'll just turn into a fly and give him one more scare, so as to get the door opened." The Great Sage slipped aside, reached behind his head, plucked out a hair, blew a breath of immortal breath on it, and cried, "Change!" It at once changed into a golden fly, which flew straight at the old demon's face and bumped him full on. The old demon, flustered, said, "Brother, this is no good—that thing has come in through the door." Startled, the demons great and small, every one of them, snatched up rakes and brooms and rushed forward to swat at the fly.
The Great Sage could not help himself, and let out a snickering laugh. It would have been better indeed had he not laughed—this one laugh revealed his true face. But the third old demon leaped forward, seized hold of him, and said, "Elder Brother, we nearly let him deceive us." The old demon said, "Worthy brother, who is deceiving whom?" The third demon said, "This little demon who just answered was not Little Whirlwind—he is Sun Wukong. He must have run into Little Whirlwind and somehow beaten him to death, I know not how, and then transformed himself to fool us." Pilgrim, alarmed, thought, "He has recognized me." He quickly felt his own face with his hand, and said to the old demon, "How could I be Sun Wukong? I am Little Whirlwind—the Great King has mistaken me." The old demon laughed and said, "Brother, he really is Little Whirlwind. He answers roll call before me three times a day; I know him well." Then he asked, "Have you your token?" Pilgrim said, "I have," and, lifting his garment, produced the token. The old demon, now fully convinced, said, "Brother, do not wrong him." The third demon said, "Elder Brother, did you not see it yourself? Just now he turned aside and gave one laugh, and I saw a thunder-god's beak show plainly on his face. When he saw me seize him, he changed back into this shape." He called out, "Little ones, bring rope!" The chieftains at once fetched cords.
The third demon flipped Pilgrim over and bound him trussed up like a horse, hand and foot together. When they lifted his garment to look, sure enough it was the body of the Bimawen, the Protector of the Horses. Now, Pilgrim had seventy-two transformations; when he changed into birds, beasts, flowers and trees, vessels, or insects and the like, his whole body would go along with the change;但變人物,卻只是頭臉變了,身子變不過來。but when he changed into a human figure, only his head and face changed, while his body could not be transformed. And indeed there he was, a body of yellow fur, two patches of red haunches, and a tail. The old demon looked and said, "It is Sun Wukong's body with Little Whirlwind's face. It is he, sure enough." He ordered, "Little ones, first set out the wine, and pour the Third Great King a cup in honor of his achievement. Now that Sun Wukong is caught, Tang Seng is certainly food in our mouths." The third demon said, "Let us not drink wine yet. Sun Wukong is slippery, and he knows the art of escape; I fear he may get away. Have the little ones carry out the vase, and put Sun Wukong inside the vase—only then will it be safe for us to drink."
The old demon laughed heartily and said, "Just so, just so." He at once picked thirty-six little demons, who went inside, opened the storeroom door, and carried out the vase. You ask how large that vase was? It stood a mere two chi four cun tall. How then could it take thirty-six men to carry it? That vase was a treasure of the two vital breaths, yin and yang; inside it held the Seven Treasures and the Eight Trigrams and the Twenty-Four Vital Breaths, and it required thirty-six men, matching the number of the Heavenly Ladle stars, before it could be lifted at all. In a moment the treasure vase was carried out and set outside the third gate, wiped perfectly clean, and its lid lifted off. They untied Pilgrim's ropes, stripped off his clothes, and then, drawing on the immortal vapor within the vase, with a whooshing sound sucked him inside; the lid was put back on and sealed with paper strips. Then they went back to drink their wine, saying, "Now that the monkey has this time entered our treasure vase, he need never again dream of the road to the West. Even if he could somehow manage to worship the Buddha and fetch the scriptures, it would only be by turning his back and rocking in a cradle—that is, by being reborn and seizing another's body." And there you may see the demons great and small, every one laughing gleefully, going off to celebrate the achievement—no more of that for now.
The story turns to the Great Sage, who upon reaching inside the vase found his body bound small by the treasure, and so, giving up any thought of transforming, simply crouched in the very middle. After a good while, feeling the shade cool there, he suddenly laughed aloud and said, "This demon has an empty reputation abroad but no substance within. How could he tell people that this vase, once it holds a person, would in an hour or two turn him to pus and blood? 咦!If it stays as cool and pleasant as this, I could live here seven or eight years and be perfectly fine." Ah! The Great Sage did not in fact know the true nature of that treasure: if it held a person who kept silent, for a whole year it would stay cool and shaded;但聞得人言,就有火來燒了。but the moment it heard a person speak, fire would come to burn him. Before the Great Sage had even finished speaking, the whole vase was suddenly filled with flame. Fortunately he had his skills; sitting in the center, he pinched a fire-avoiding spell and felt not the least fear. He endured for half an hour, when from all around forty snakes burrowed out to bite him. Pilgrim swung his hands, seized them as they came, and squeezed with all his strength, crushing them into eighty pieces. Shortly after, three fire-dragons also came out and coiled about him from top to bottom, and this was truly hard to bear. He felt himself flustered and at a loss, saying, "Other things I could manage, but these three fire-dragons are hard to deal with. If I don't get out before much longer, the fire's heat will attack my heart—what then?" He thought, "Let me stretch my body longer, and burst the thing open." And indeed, the fine Great Sage pinched a spell, recited a charm, and cried, "Grow!" and at once he grew to a height of several zhang. But the vase clung tight against his body, and grew right along with him. He then shrank his body small again, and the vase at once shrank small along with him. Pilgrim, alarmed at heart, said, "Hard, hard, hard! Why is it that when I grow, it grows too, and when I shrink, it shrinks too? What am I to do?" Before he had finished speaking, he felt a pain in his ankle-bones. He hurriedly reached down to feel it, and found it had been burned soft by the fire. His own heart grew anxious, and he said, "What can be done? My ankle-bones are burned soft—I shall become a cripple." He could not help but let the tears fall. Truly it was as the verse says:
He said, "Master, oh Master! In the year I turned to the true path, thanks to Bodhisattva Guanyin's exhortation to virtue, I escaped a Heaven-sent calamity. With you I have toiled through countless mountains, wiping out many a demon, subduing Bajie, and gaining Sha Seng—through a thousand hardships and ten thousand trials, hoping together to attain the West and jointly achieve the right fruit. How could I have known that today I would meet this vicious demon, that old Sun would blunder in here, lose his very life, and leave you stranded midway up the mountain, unable to go forward? I suppose it is because my name once stood too high, and so today's calamity has come upon me."
Just as he was sunk in this sorrow, he suddenly recalled: "The Bodhisattva once at Snake-Coil Mountain bestowed on me three life-saving hairs—I know not whether they are still there; let me search and see." He reached at once and felt all over his body, and found behind his head three hairs, exceedingly stiff and hard. Delighted, he said, "All the hair on my body is as soft and pliant as that, yet only these three are as hard as spear-shafts—they must surely be the ones meant to save my life." He at once gritted his teeth, bore the pain, plucked out the hairs, blew a breath of immortal breath on them, and cried, "Change!" One at once changed into a diamond drill, one changed into a strip of bamboo, and one changed into a silken cord. He bent the bamboo strip into a bow, fitted the drill, and aimed it at the bottom of the vase, drilling swiftly again and again until he had bored a hole clear through, letting in a shaft of light. Delighted, he said, "What luck, what luck—now I can get out." No sooner had he changed his body forth than the vase turned cool and shaded once more. Why did it suddenly turn cool? It was because, once he had drilled through it, the yin and yang vapor had leaked out, and so it turned cool at once.
The fine Great Sage put away his hairs, shrank his body small, and turned himself into a tiny gnat, exceedingly light and nimble, fine as a strand of hair, no longer than an eyebrow-hair; he slipped out through the hole, but did not yet fly off—instead he flew straight to the old demon's head and clung there. The old demon was just then drinking wine when he suddenly set down his cup and said, "Third Brother, has Sun Wukong turned to liquid by now?" The third demon laughed and said, "Is it even time yet?" The old demon ordered that the vase be brought up. The thirty-six little demons below at once went to lift the vase, and found it had grown much lighter. In alarm the little demons reported, "Great King, the vase has grown light." The old demon roared, "Nonsense! The treasure is the full working of the two vital breaths, yin and yang—how could it grow light?" Among them one little demon, forcing himself, lifted the vase up and said, "Look, is this not light?" The old demon lifted the lid to look, and saw light shining clear through within; unable to help himself, he cried out, "This vase is empty—kong, empty!" The Great Sage, on his very head, likewise could not help but say aloud, "My child, sou—away I go!" The assembled demons heard this and said, "He's gotten away, he's gotten away!" and at once gave the order: "Shut the gates, shut the gates!"
Pilgrim gave his body a shake, took back the clothes that had been stripped from him, resumed his true form, and leapt out of the cave; turning his head back, he cursed, "Demons, mind your manners! The vase is drilled through now and can hold no one—it's fit only to be used as a chamber pot." Joyful and gleeful, clamoring and carrying on, he trod his cloud and headed straight back to where Tang Seng was. The elder was just then heaping up earth in place of incense, gazing skyward and praying. Pilgrim halted his cloud for a moment to listen to what he was praying. The elder, palms pressed together, faced heaven and said:
When the Great Sage heard these words, he strove all the harder, drew in his cloud-light, came forward, and called out, "Master, I have come!" The elder took hold of him and said, "Wukong, what toil you've had. You went far to探 the high mountain, and were gone so long without returning that I was deeply worried. What is truly the good or ill fortune to be found in this mountain?" Pilgrim laughed and said, "Master, on this trip just now, first it was because the beings of the Eastern Land have good fortune and karmic affinity, second because Master's merit and virtue are boundless without limit, and third it was thanks to this disciple's magic power as well." He then related in full detail all that had happened before—posing as Little Whirlwind, being shut inside the vase, and escaping from it. "Now that I am able to see my honored master's face again, this is truly as if I owed you my life for two lifetimes." The elder, full of gratitude, said, "On this trip, did you never come to blows with the demon?" Pilgrim said, "No." The elder said, "Then how can you be sure of guarding me over the mountain?" Pilgrim, being a man who loved to win, cried out, "How could I not be able to guard you over the mountain?" The elder said, "You have not yet contended with him to see who wins or loses; to speak so vaguely, how dare I go forward?" The Great Sage laughed and said, "Master, you really do not understand how to adapt to circumstances. As the saying goes, 'A single strand makes no thread; one palm alone claps no sound.' There are three of those demons, and little demons by the thousands and tens of thousands—how could old Sun alone contend with them?" The elder said, "The few cannot withstand the many—it is indeed hard for you alone. Bajie and Sha Seng also have their own abilities; let them both go with you, to join hearts and strength with you, sweep the mountain road clean, and guard me across." Pilgrim, pondering, said, "Master's words are most fitting. Let Sha Seng stay to guard you, and let Bajie come along with me." The idiot, flustered, said, "Elder Brother has no eye for judging people. I am clumsy and coarse, with no real skill at all; on the road I'm just so much wind-carrying baggage—what good would it do you to bring me along?" Pilgrim said, "Brother, though you have no great skill, you are at least a fair imitation of a man. As the common saying goes, 'Even a fart adds to the wind.' You can at least bolster my courage a bit." Bajie said, "Very well, very well, I hope you'll look out for me, brother. Only, when things get truly urgent and pressing, don't play tricks on me." The elder said, "Bajie, mind yourself. Sha Seng and I will stay here."
The idiot summoned up his fierce spirit, and together with Pilgrim rode the wild wind and mounted the clouds and mist, leaping up the high mountain, and soon reached the mouth of the cave. They saw at once that the cave gate was shut fast, with no one in sight on any side. Pilgrim stepped forward, gripped his iron rod, and called out in a stern loud voice, "Demons, open the gate! Come out quickly and fight with old Sun!" The little demons inside the cave went in to report. The old demon, his heart pounding and his gall quaking, said, "For years everyone has said the monkey is fierce, and the words were no idle rumor—it is truly so." The second old demon, standing by, asked, "Elder Brother, what are you saying?" The old demon said, "That Pilgrim earlier turned into Little Whirlwind and slipped in among us, and none of us could tell; luckily our worthy third brother recognized him, and we shut him inside the vase, but he used his skill to drill the vase through, and then snatched back his clothes and got away. Now he is outside calling for battle—who dares go out and fight the first bout with him?" Not a single one answered. He asked again, and again no one answered; all of them feigned deafness and pretended to be mute. The old demon flew into a rage and said, "We hold, however unworthily, an ill name upon the great roads of the West, and today Sun Wukong shows us such contempt—if we do not go out and face him in battle, it will lower our reputation still further. Let me risk this old life of mine and go fight three bouts with him. If I can hold out through three bouts, then Tang Seng will still be food in our mouths;戰不過,那時關了門,讓他過去罷。」 if I cannot hold out, then we shall shut the gates at that time, and let him pass on by." So he took up his armor and bound it on, and opened the gate to go out.
Pilgrim and Bajie, watching by the gate, saw truly what a fine monster he was:
The Great Sage turned and said, "It is I, your Old Grandfather Sun, the Great Sage Equal to Heaven." The old demon laughed and said, "So you are Sun Wukong? Bold reckless ape, I have not provoked you—why then do you come here calling for battle?" Pilgrim said, "'Only when the wind rises do the waves start; when there is no tide, the water settles of itself.' Had you not provoked me, would I have troubled to seek you out? It is only because you, a pack of foxes and dogs banded together, plotted to eat my master, that I have come here to act." The old demon said, "You come blustering so fiercely to my very gate—can it be you mean to fight?" Pilgrim said, "Just so." The old demon said, "Do not be so overbearing. Were I to call out my demon troops, array them in battle formation, wave banners and beat drums, and give battle against you, it would show that I, sitting comfortably at home like a tiger in its den, was taking unfair advantage of you. I will fight you alone, one against one, with no one to help either side." When Pilgrim heard this, he called out, "Zhu Bajie, step aside and see what old Sun does to him!" And the idiot truly did slip off to one side. The old demon king said, "Come here, and first serve as my chopping stake — let me use all my strength to hack your bald head three times, and I'll let your Tang Priest pass;假若禁不得,快送你唐僧來,與我做一頓下飯。」 but if you can't endure it, hand over your Tang Priest at once, to make me a meal to go with my rice." Hearing this, Pilgrim laughed and said, "Monster, if you've got paper and brush in your cave, bring them out and let's draw up a contract. From today, even if you hack at me clear through to next year, I won't hold it against you."
The old demon king summoned up his fierce spirit, planted his feet in a T-stance, raised his blade with both hands, and brought it down straight at the crown of the Great Sage's head. The Great Sage tilted his head up to meet it, and there was only a loud crack — his scalp didn't even turn red. The old demon king was greatly startled and said, "What a hard head this monkey has!" The Great Sage laughed and said, "You don't know. Old Sun is:
The old demon king said, "Monkey, don't talk big — take this second stroke of mine, and I'll show you no mercy this time." Pilgrim said, "One way or another, it'll only be more of the same hacking." The old demon king said, "Monkey, you don't know this blade of mine:
The Great Sage laughed and said, "This monster has no eye for things — he's mistaken old Sun's head for a gourd ladle. Never mind, one mistaken stroke deserves another concession — let me let you take one more hack and see what happens."
The old demon king raised his blade and hacked again; the Great Sage tilted his head to meet it, and with a crack it was split clean into two halves. The Great Sage rolled on the ground and turned into two bodies. At the sight of this the monster panicked, and his hand let the steel blade drop. Zhu Bajie, watching from a distance, laughed and said, "If the old demon king likes hacking two strokes, won't that make four people?" The old demon king pointed at Pilgrim and said, "I've heard you can use the body-dividing technique — why bring that trick out in front of me?" The Great Sage said, "What is this body-dividing technique?" The old demon king said, "Why did the first stroke I hacked at you do nothing, and now this second stroke has made you into two people?" The Great Sage laughed and said, "Monster, don't you be afraid. Hack me ten thousand times, and I'll give you back twenty thousand people." The old demon king said, "You monkey, you only know how to divide your body, not how to gather it back together. If you have the skill to gather yourself into one again, then go ahead and strike me with a staff blow." The Great Sage said, "No lying now — you said you'd hack three strokes, but you've only hacked me twice. Let me strike one blow — if I fall even half a blow short, I'm no longer surnamed Sun." The old demon king said, "Just so, just so."
Splendid Great Sage — he gathered his two bodies back together, rolled over, and was once again a single body, then drew out his staff and struck straight at the head. The old demon king raised his blade to block it and said, "Insolent ape! What kind of mourner's staff is that, that you dare come to my very door to strike people?" The Great Sage shouted, "If you ask about this staff of mine, it has a name known throughout heaven and earth." The old demon king said, "How does its name show itself?" He said:
Hearing this, the monster trembled, but staking his life on it, raised his blade and hacked down;猴王笑吟吟使鐵棒前迎。the Monkey King, smiling broadly, met it with his iron staff. The two of them grappled first before the cave, then leaped up and fought each other in midair. What a fine battle this was:
The old demon king and the Great Sage fought through more than twenty rounds without either side winning.
Now Bajie, watching from below as the two of them fought to a fine pitch, could not restrain himself; he drew his rake, rode the wind, leaped up, and struck straight at the monster's face. The monster panicked. Little did he know that Bajie had a tiger's rash temper, and was only recklessly trying to scare people. He supposed that with that long snout, big ears, hard hands, and fierce rake, he had lost the bout, so he dropped his blade and turned to flee. The Great Sage shouted, "After him, after him!" Riding on this show of force, the idiot raised his rake and hurried down in pursuit of the monster. When the old demon king saw him closing in, he planted himself before the slope, faced into the wind, gave himself a shake, and revealed his true form, opening his great mouth wide to swallow Bajie. Bajie, terrified, quickly pulled back and dove into the grass, heedless of the brambles and thorns, and unconcerned about scratches or headaches, lying there trembling and listening for the sound of the wooden clapper. Pilgrim arrived close behind, and the monster opened its mouth to swallow him too — but this time it fell right into his scheme: he put away his iron staff and went forward to meet it, letting the old demon king swallow him whole in one gulp. This so frightened the idiot in the grass that he muttered and grumbled to himself: "That Protector of the Horses doesn't know when to advance and when to retreat. When the monster came to eat you, why didn't you run — instead you went to meet him head-on! Once swallowed into that belly, today you're still a monk, but tomorrow you'll be nothing but dung." The monster went off triumphant, and only then did the idiot crawl out of the grass and slink back the way he had come.
Now to tell of Sanzang, who was down at the foot of the mountain slope watching anxiously with Sha Monk, when he saw Bajie come running up, gasping for breath. Sanzang was greatly alarmed and said, "Bajie, why are you in such a sorry state? Why don't I see Wukong?" The idiot said, weeping, "Elder Brother was swallowed whole into the monster's belly." Hearing this, Sanzang was so shocked he collapsed to the ground, and after a long while, stamping his feet and beating his chest, he cried, "Disciple! You always said you were skilled at subduing demons, and would guide me west to see the Buddha — how was I to know you would die today at this monster's hands.苦哉,苦哉!How bitter, how bitter! All the merit my disciples and I built together has now turned to dust." The master grieved most bitterly. Just look at that idiot — instead of coming to console the master, he called out, "Sha Monk, bring the luggage over here, let the two of us divide it up." Sha Monk said, "Second Brother, divide it for what?" Bajie said, "Once divided, each of us goes his own way: you go back to the Flowing Sands River and eat people again;我往高老莊,看看我渾家。I'll go to Gao Old Village to see my wife. We'll sell the white horse and buy the master a coffin to see him off." Hearing this, the elder, seething with anger, cried out to Heaven and burst into loud weeping. But let us not dwell on that for now.
Now to tell of the old demon king, who, having swallowed Pilgrim and thinking he had scored a triumph, went straight back to his own cave, where the assembled demons came out to greet him and ask about his victory in battle. The old demon king said, "I've caught one." The second demon king said happily, "Elder Brother, who did you catch?" The old demon king said, "Sun Wukong." The second demon king said, "Where did you catch him?" The old demon king said, "I swallowed him whole into my belly." The third demon chief was greatly startled and said, "Elder Brother, ah — didn't I warn you, Sun Wukong is no good to eat." The Great Sage spoke up from inside the belly, "Plenty good to eat — and it staves off hunger too, I'll never go hungry again." This so alarmed the little demons that they said, "Great King, this is bad — Sun Wukong is talking inside your belly!" The old demon king said, "Am I afraid of his talking? Having had the skill to eat him, do you suppose I lack the skill to deal with him? Go quickly and boil up some salt broth for me — let me pour it down my belly and make him retch it up, then I'll fry him up slowly to go with my wine." The little demons indeed mixed up half a basin of salt broth. The old demon drank it down in one gulp, then, mouth gaping wide, retched with all his might;那大聖在肚裡生了根,動也不動。but the Great Sage had taken root inside his belly and did not budge in the slightest. So he blocked off his own throat and tried to vomit again, retching until his head spun and his eyes blurred, and even his gallbladder nearly burst;行者越發不動。but Pilgrim only sat tighter than ever. Panting for breath, the old demon king called out, "Sun Wukong, won't you come out?" Pilgrim said, "Too soon — this is exactly the wrong time to come out!" The old demon king said, "Why won't you come out?" Pilgrim said, "You monster, you're quite lacking in flexibility. Ever since I became a monk, I've lived a very meager life, and now that autumn is turning cool, I'm still wearing only a single unlined robe. This belly of yours is warm, and no wind gets in — let me stay through the winter here before I come out."
Hearing this, the assembled demons all said, "Great King, Sun Wukong means to spend the winter in your belly." The old demon king said, "If he wants to winter there, then I'll sit myself in meditation and use a transporting technique, eating nothing all winter, and starve that Protector of the Horses to death." The Great Sage said, "My child, you don't understand these things. Old Sun, escorting Tang Priest to fetch the scriptures, passed through Guangdong, and brought along a folding pot — I'll set it up in here and boil up your innards for a meal. I'll savor your liver, intestines, stomach, and lungs bit by bit, at leisure — that alone should keep me fed clear through to Qingming." The second demon king was greatly alarmed and said, "Elder Brother, this monkey is capable of actually doing it." The third demon said, "Elder Brother, eating the innards is one thing, but where would he even set up a pot?" Pilgrim said, "The forked bone up top makes a fine place to set a pot." The third demon said, "That's bad — if he sets up a pot there and lights a fire, won't the smoke choke up into your nostrils and make you sneeze?" Pilgrim laughed and said, "No trouble at all — old Sun will just take his gold-banded staff and jab it up through the crown of your head, poking a hole: one to serve as a skylight, the other as a chimney flue."
Hearing this, the old demon king, though he claimed not to be afraid, was inwardly shaken, and could only steel his nerve and call out, "Brothers, don't be afraid. Bring me that drugged wine — let me drink a few cups down and poison that monkey to death." Pilgrim laughed inwardly and said, "Five hundred years ago, when old Sun wreaked havoc in Heaven, I ate Laojun's elixirs, the Jade Emperor's wine, the Queen Mother's peaches, phoenix marrow and dragon liver — what haven't I eaten? What sort of drugged wine could possibly poison me?" The little demons indeed strained out two pots of the drugged wine, poured a cup full to the brim, and handed it to the old demon king. The old demon king took it in hand, and the Great Sage, inside his belly, caught the scent of the wine at once and said, "Don't let him drink it." Splendid Great Sage — he twisted his head around and turned it into a trumpet-shaped mouth, opening it wide right below the demon's throat. The moment the monster gulped it down with a glug, Pilgrim caught it with a glug and drank it up. The second cup swallowed down was likewise caught and drunk up by Pilgrim with a glug. Cup after cup, seven or eight in a row, were all caught and drunk by him. The old demon king set down his cup and said, "I'll drink no more. Ordinarily two cups of this wine set my belly ablaze;卻才吃了七八鍾,臉上紅也不紅!」but I've just drunk seven or eight cups, and my face hasn't even turned red!"
The truth was that the Great Sage could not hold much wine, and having caught and drunk those seven or eight cups, he began to act drunk inside the belly — ceaselessly striking poses, tumbling flat on all fours, kicking up flying kicks, grabbing hold of the liver to swing on like a swing, standing on his head like a dragonfly, turning somersaults, and dancing about wildly. The monster, unable to bear the pain, collapsed to the ground.

What it’s about
Wukong's disguise at Lion-Camel Cave is exposed, and he fights the three demon kings amid their enormous host. The blue lion opens his mouth wide enough to swallow him, but ingestion gives Wukong access to the monster's vulnerable interior. He stamps, strikes and threatens from inside the belly until the lion must bargain, while the brothers devise promises and tricks to make him come out.
Once outside, Wukong faces the yellow-tusked elephant, whose trunk can seize and crush an opponent, and the great roc, whose speed prevents an easy escape. Captures and reversals accumulate as each demon uses a different bodily power and the pilgrims' road remains blocked. Wukong repeatedly converts confinement into leverage, yet the scale and coordination of the three rulers keep any local success from becoming release for Sanzang and his companions.
When it was written 背景
Being swallowed is a recurring Journey to the West tactic because Wukong's indestructible, shape-changing body reverses the boundary between eater and food. Here the joke sits inside a darker landscape explicitly organized around consumption. The lion's mouth, elephant's trunk and roc's wings give the alliance complementary powers: engulfing, binding and pursuit. Learners can follow 吞, 肚, 鼻 and 飛 as concrete verbs and body words that structure the combat. Oaths and negotiations matter too, since release from a monster's body depends on whether either side can make a promise credible.
