Guanyin Reclaims Her Golden-Haired Hound

071Chapter 71

The story goes that Sai Taisui shut tight the front and back gates, searching for Xingzhe, and clamored on until dusk, but found no trace of him.He sat in the Flaying Pavilion, mustered the demon host, and issued his orders, commanding that at every gate bells be rung and passwords called, drums beaten and clappers struck;each and every one strung his bow and drew his blade, standing watch through the night.

As it happened, the Great Sage Sun had transformed into a foolish-looking fly and clung fast beside a door.Seeing that the defenses out front were very tight, he shook open his wings and flew in through the doorway of the rear palace to look, and saw Consort Jinsheng lying prostrate over the imperial desk, tears falling clear and cold, faint sounds of grief escaping her.Xingzhe flew in through the door and lightly alighted upon her disheveled cloud-black hair, to listen for what she was weeping about.:「After a little while, the consort suddenly cried out, losing control of her voice: "My lord, you and I—

:「Hearing this, Xingzhe at once moved himself behind her ear and quietly called out: "Consort Jinsheng, do not be afraid.I am still the divine monk Elder Sun sent by your kingdom, and I have not lost my life.It was only that I, being impatient by nature, went near the dressing table and stole the golden bells; while you were drinking with the demon king, I slipped away in secret out to the front pavilion, and could not resist opening them to take a look.綿Unexpectedly I pulled loose the cotton stuffed in the mouths of the bells, and the bells rang out, bursting forth smoke, fire, and yellow sand.使I panicked and threw down the golden bells, revealed my true form, and wielded my iron rod, fighting bitterly but unable to break out; fearing I might fall victim to some vicious blow, I therefore turned myself into a little fly and clung to the door hinge, hiding there until now. That demon king has grown ever more strict in his guard, and will not open the gates.。」You must once more use the courtesies of husband and wife to coax him inside to rest, so that I may free myself to act, and find some other way to rescue you."

As soon as the consort heard these words, she trembled, her hair seeming as if plucked by some spirit;faint and fearful, her heart pounded as if struck by a pestle.:「?」:「With brimming tears she said, "Are you now a man or a ghost?" Xingzhe said, "I am neither man nor ghost — right now I have turned into a little fly here.。」:「。」:「Do not be afraid, go quickly and invite the demon king in." The consort did not believe him, and with tears dripping, whispered in a low voice, "Do not haunt my dreams and deceive me." Xingzhe said, "How would I dare to deceive you in a dream?。」If you don't believe me, open your hand, and let me jump down for you to see." The consort really did open her left hand, and Xingzhe lightly flew down.便He landed there in the middle of her jade palm, looking just like—

:「。」:「。」Consort Jinsheng raised her jade palm high and called out, "Divine Monk." Xingzhe answered with a faint buzzing sound, "I am the divine monk transformed." Only then did the consort believe him.:「?」:「:『。』:『。』She whispered quietly, "When I go to invite the demon king in, what will you then do?" Xingzhe said, "The ancients said: 'It is wine alone that ruins a whole lifetime.' And also: 'Nothing dissolves the ten thousand troubles better than wine.' Wine serves many purposes — you need only make drinking wine your first priority.。」Call in one of your personal attendant maids and point her out to me, and I will transform into her likeness, to wait at your side — then I can act at the right moment."

The consort truly followed his words, and at once called out, "Where is Chunjiao?" From behind the screen came a fox-spirit with a jade face, who knelt down and said, "What orders does the consort have in calling Chunjiao?" The consort said, "Go and tell them to light the gauze lanterns, burn musk incense, and support me out to the front hall, to invite the Great King to retire and rest." Chunjiao at once turned to the front and summoned seven or eight strange deer-spirits and fox-demons, who carried two pairs of lanterns and a pair of hand-censers, and arranged themselves in rows to left and right. The consort raised herself slightly and clasped her hands together, and by then the Great Sage had already flown off.:「!」Splendid Xingzhe — he spread his wings and flew straight to atop the jade-faced fox's head, plucked out a strand of hair, blew a breath of magic upon it, and cried, "Change!" It turned into a sleep-inducing insect, which he set gently upon her face.As it happened, once the sleep-insect reached a person's face, it would crawl toward the nostrils, and once it crawled inside, the person would fall asleep at once.Sure enough, Chunjiao gradually felt drowsy, could not keep her footing, swayed and nodded off; she hurried to find her original sleeping place, dropped her head down, and fell fast asleep, snoring away.Xingzhe jumped down, shook himself, and transformed into an exact likeness of Chunjiao; he went round the screen and stood in line among the others — leave that for now.

:「。」Now to tell of Consort Jinsheng, who was just walking forward when a young demon caught sight of her and at once reported to Sai Taisui: "Great King, the consort is coming." The demon king hurried out of the Flaying Pavilion to welcome her.:「。」滿:「The consort said, "Great King, since the smoke and fire have died down and the thief has vanished without trace, at this late hour I have come specially to invite the Great King to retire." The demon, filled with joy, said, "Take care of yourself, my consort. That thief just now was none other than Sun Wukong. He defeated my vanguard, killed my junior officers, transformed himself to get in, and deceived us all.。」:「We searched so thoroughly, yet he is nowhere to be found, and so my mind is uneasy." The consort said, "That fellow must have escaped and fled.。」Great King, set your mind at ease and worry no more — go now and rest." Seeing the consort standing in attendance and respectfully inviting him, the demon dared not firmly refuse, and so he could only instruct the demon host that each must be careful with fire and lamps and guard closely against thieves; then he went straight with the consort to the rear palace.Xingzhe, falsely transformed into Chunjiao, led the way in among the two rows of attendant maids.

:「。」:「The consort called out, "Bring wine to ease the Great King's fatigue." The demon king laughed and said, "Yes indeed, yes indeed.。」調Bring the wine quickly, that the consort and I may steady our nerves." The false Chunjiao at once, together with the other demons, laid out fruits, arranged some meat dishes, and set out the tables and chairs.穿The consort raised her cup, and the demon king likewise offered a cup, and the two of them exchanged their wine cups.:「穿。」。「:「。」調The false Chunjiao stood by, holding the wine flask, and said, "Great King, this is the first exchange of cups with the consort tonight — please each drain your cup, to make a pair of double-happiness cups." They truly poured again and drained their cups again. The "false Chunjiao" then said further, "Since the Great King and the consort are joyfully met, let those attendants who can sing offer songs, and those skilled in dance rise and dance." Before she had finished speaking, a wave of song was heard, all in harmonious tune, some singing, some dancing. The two of them drank a great deal more, and then the consort called a halt to the singing and dancing. The attendant maids divided into groups and filed out to line up beyond the screen.Only the false Chunjiao kept hold of the flask, serving wine up and down. The consort and the demon king spoke only words proper to husband and wife.Just see how the consort, with a whole show of clouds-and-rain passion, coaxed the demon king until his very bones went soft and his sinews numb.Yet he simply lacked the fortune for it, and could not so much as touch her.How pitiful!尿──Truly it was a cat biting a bladder-bag — joy for nothing.

:「?」:「After chatting a while and laughing a while, the consort asked, "Great King, the treasures have not been damaged, have they?" The demon king said, "These treasures are things forged and formed before Heaven and Earth — how could they be damaged? :「?」:「。」:「!」Only that thief pulled loose the cotton stopping their mouths, and burned my leopard-skin bag." The consort said, "How will you deal with it?" The demon king said, "No need to deal with it — I'm carrying them at my waist." Hearing this, the false Chunjiao at once plucked out a handful of hairs, chewed them to bits, and gently drew close to the demon king; she placed the hairs upon his body, blew three breaths of magic, and silently cried, "Change!" Those hairs at once turned into three kinds of vile creatures — lice, fleas, and bedbugs — which attacked into the demon king's body, biting wildly against his skin. The demon king, unable to bear the burning itch, reached his hand inside his robe to grope and rub at the itching, and with his fingers pinched out several lice, which he brought near the lamp to examine.:「漿。」:「。」:「Seeing this, the consort said, holding back her thoughts, "Great King, it must be that your underclothes are soiled — they have gone unwashed and unstarched for so long, and so these creatures have bred." Ashamed, the demon king said, "I have never before bred such things — how strange that I should be shamed this very night." The consort laughed and said, "Great King, why call it a shame?:『As the common saying goes: 'Even upon the emperor's body there are three imperial lice.'。」Go on and take off your clothes, and let me catch them for you." The demon king truly loosened his sash and took off his robe.

The false Chunjiao stood by, watching closely the demon king's clothes — layer upon layer, fleas were leaping everywhere, and every garment was lined with great bedbugs;lice both large and small crowded thick and dense, just like ants pouring out of their nest. Before she knew it, she had lifted away the third layer down to where the flesh showed, and there upon the golden bells too the creatures swarmed in confusion, beyond all counting.:「。」The false Chunjiao said, "Great King, hand me the bells, and let me catch the lice on them for you too." The demon king, partly ashamed and partly flustered, and unable in any case to tell true from false, handed the three bells over to the false Chunjiao. The false Chunjiao took them in hand and made a show of fussing over them for a good while; seeing the demon king with his head lowered shaking out his clothes, she at once hid the golden bells away, plucked out a strand of hair, and turned it into three bells exactly alike, which she held up before the lamp and turned over as if examining them. Then, wriggling and squirming her body, she gave herself a shake, gathering the lice, bedbugs, and fleas back onto herself, and handed the false golden bells over to the demon.:「。」The demon took them in hand, all the more befuddled and at a loss, quite unable to tell true from false; holding the bells up in both hands, he passed them to the consort, saying, "This time you must put them away safely, and be very, very careful — don't let it happen like last time." The consort took them, gently opened the clothes chest, put the false bells inside, and locked it with a golden lock.:「。」:「Then she drank a few more cups of wine with the demon king, and told the maids, "Dust off the ivory bed and spread out the brocade quilt — I shall sleep together with the Great King tonight." The demon king kept saying "yes, yes" in quick succession, then said, "No such fortune for me, no such fortune — I dare not keep you company.西。」I shall instead take a palace maid and go sleep in the western palace — consort, please settle yourself to rest." And so each returned to their own sleeping quarters — leave that for now.

Now to tell of the false Chunjiao, having succeeded in her purpose, who fastened the treasures at her waist, resumed her true form, gave herself a shake to withdraw the sleep-insect, and walked straight off toward the front.Just then she heard clappers and bells sounding together, striking urgently the third watch.使Splendid Xingzhe — he formed a magic sign with his fingers, recited a true spell, and used a technique of invisibility, going straight to the gate; there he saw that the gate was bolted and locked most tightly.使So he drew out his gold-banded rod, pointed it once at the gate, and worked the technique for undoing locks, and the gate lightly swung open.:「。」He hurried out through the gate and stood there, calling out in a stern, loud voice: "Sai Taisui, give me back Consort Jinsheng!" He called out two or three times in a row, startling the greater and lesser demons; hurrying to look, they found the front gate open. They hastily took up a lamp to find the lock, and shut the gate and locked it again as before.:「。」:「。」They sent several to run inside and report: "Great King, someone outside the main gate is calling out the Great King's honored title, demanding Consort Jinsheng." The attendant maids within at once came out of the palace gate and whispered word: "Don't shout — the Great King has only just fallen asleep." Xingzhe again called out loudly before the gate, but the young demons again dared not go and disturb him. This happened three or four times over, and none dared go report it.The Great Sage kept up his shouting and clamor outside, right on until the sky grew light.Unable to bear it any longer, he swung his iron rod in hand and stepped forward to strike the gate. This threw the greater and lesser demons into a panic — some bracing the gate shut, others running to carry the news. The demon king had only just woken from sleep when he heard a chaotic clamor of noise; he rose, put on his clothes, and stepped out from behind the gauze curtains, asking, "What's all this shouting?" The attendant maids then knelt down and said, "My lord, we don't know who it is that has been shouting and cursing outside the cave for half the night, and now is even striking the gate."

:「The demon king walked out of the palace gate, and saw those several young demons who had come to report, kowtowing in a flustered rush, saying, "Outside someone is shouting and cursing, demanding Consort Jinsheng;and if we say even half a word of 'no,' he pours out countless crooked words, most unpleasant to hear.。」:「Seeing that dawn has come and the Great King has not appeared, he has been driven to strike the gate." The demon said, "Do not open the gate yet.Go and ask him where he has come from. What is his surname, what is his given name?。」:「?」:「。」Come back quickly and report." The young demon hurried out and asked through the gate, "Who is it striking the gate?" Xingzhe said, "I am the Grand-Uncle respectfully invited here by the Kingdom of Zhuzi, come to fetch Consort Jinsheng back to the kingdom." The young demon, having heard this, at once went back to report these words. The demon then went to the rear palace to inquire into this person's origins.:「。」As it happened, the consort had only just risen and had not yet washed or combed her hair, when she saw an attendant maid come report, "My lord is coming." The consort hastily straightened her clothes, gathered up her loose black cloud of hair, and came out of the palace to greet him.:「。」:「?」:「No sooner had they sat down, before she could even ask, than they heard a young demon come report, "That Grand-Uncle who came has already broken down the gate." The demon laughed and said, "Consort, how many generals and commanders does your court have?" The consort said, "At court there are forty-eight garrisons of troops, a thousand good generals;。」:「?」:「?」:「』,and at every border the marshals and commanders-in-chief are beyond counting." The demon king said, "Is there among them one surnamed Wai?" The consort said, "I, within the palace, know only how to assist the sovereign inwardly and instruct the consorts and concubines morning and night; outer affairs are boundless — how could I remember all their names and surnames?" The demon king said, "This one who has come calls himself 'Waigong' — yet I recall that in the Hundred Family Surnames there is no surname Wai at all.The consort, being by nature intelligent and of noble birth, dwelling within the imperial palace, must have read widely in books.?」:「』,。」Do you recall in which book this surname appears?" The consort said, "Only in the Thousand Character Classic is there the line 'Outwardly receive the tutor's instruction' — this must surely be it."

:「。」:「?」:「?」:「The demon king said with delight, "That must be it, that must be it." He rose at once, took leave of the consort, went to the Flaying Pavilion, dressed and armed himself neatly, mustered his demon troops, opened the gate, and went straight outside; gripping a battle-axe with engraved flower patterns in hand, he called out sternly in a loud voice, "Which one of you is the Grandfather Wai come from the Kingdom of Zhuzi?" Xingzhe gripped his gold-banded rod in his right hand, and pointed with his left, saying, "Worthy nephew, why are you calling for me?" Seeing this, the demon king grew furious at heart and said, "You wretch—

:「Xingzhe laughed and said, "You wild fiend who deceives your sovereign and cheats your king — so you really have no eyes.Think back — five hundred years ago, when I threw the Heavenly Palace into great turmoil, the divine generals of the Nine Heavens, on seeing me, dared not address me without the word 'Old' before my name;?」:「!」:「so if you call me Grandfather, how does that wrong you in the least?" The demon king shouted, "Quickly, tell me your surname and given name, and what skills in arms you have, that you dare come here to run wild!" Xingzhe said, "If you had not asked my name, it might have been all right — but if you want me to state my name, I fear you will have no place left to stand.Come up here, stand firm, and listen to me tell it:

:「When the demon king heard him name himself Xingzhe Wukong, he then said, "So you are that very wretch who threw the Heavenly Palace into great turmoil.西便?」:「Since you have freed yourself to escort Tang Seng westward, you should simply go your own way and be done with it — why must you go stirring up trouble that isn't yours, playing the slave for that Kingdom of Zhuzi, and come here seeking your death?" Xingzhe shouted back, "You thieving wild fiend!Your words show pure ignorance.I received the courtesy of a respectful invitation from the Kingdom of Zhuzi, and was further favored with their gracious address and hospitality; I, old Sun, rank a thousand times higher than that king's throne — he honors me as his own father and mother, and serves me as a god — how dare you utter the words 'playing the slave'?。」使As for you, deceiver of your sovereign and cheater of your king — don't run, take a blow from your grandfather's rod!" The demon, flustered, at once dodged aside to evade it, and swung his flower-engraved axe to meet him head-on.What a fine fight this was!Just see:

The two of them fought through fifty rounds, without either gaining the victory.:「The demon king, seeing that Xingzhe's skill was formidable and reckoning he could not win, braced his axe against the iron rod and said, "Sun Xingzhe, hold off a moment.。」:「『』。I have not yet taken my morning meal today — let me go eat, and then come back to settle victor and vanquished with you." Xingzhe, well aware that he meant to go fetch the bells, withdrew his iron rod and said, "'A good fellow does not chase a weary hare.'。」Go on, go on, eat your fill, so you may come back all the readier to meet your death."

:「。」:「?」:「The demon hastily turned and rushed inside, saying to the consort, "Quickly bring me the treasures." The consort said, "What use have you for the treasures?" The demon king said, "The one who came calling for battle this morning is a disciple of the monk fetching scriptures, called Sun Wukong Xingzhe, who falsely claimed to be my grandfather.I have fought him up to now, and neither of us has won.。」Let me take the treasures out and release some smoke and fire, to burn this monkey-head." Hearing this, the consort's heart pounded with alarm: if she did not bring out the bells, she feared he would grow suspicious;yet if she did bring out the bells, she feared it would cost Sun Xingzhe his life.:「。」Just as she hesitated, unable to decide, the demon king pressed her further, saying, "Bring them out quickly." The consort, having no other choice, could only unlock the chest and hand the three bells over to the demon king. The demon king took them and walked straight out of the cave. The consort sat within the palace, tears falling like rain, wondering whether Xingzhe would be able to escape with his life.Yet neither of the two knew that these were the false bells.

:「。」:「Once the demon came out through the gate, he at once took the upwind position and called out, "Sun Xingzhe, don't run — watch me shake my bells!" Xingzhe laughed and said, "If you have bells, does that mean I have none??」:「If you know how to shake them, does that mean I don't?" The demon king said, "What bells could you possibly have?。」Bring them out and let me see." Xingzhe pinched his iron rod down into a tiny embroidery needle and hid it inside his ear.:「?」:「He then untied from his waist the three true treasures, and said to the demon king, "Aren't these my purple-gold bells?" Seeing them, the demon king was startled at heart and said, "Strange, how strange! How can his bells be exactly the same as mine, without the slightest difference??」:「?」:「?」便:「Even if they were cast from the same mold, surely the polishing would not be perfectly even — there ought to be a scar here, a missing stem there — yet how is it that not a hair's breadth of difference shows?" He then asked, "Where did those bells of yours come from?" Xingzhe said, "Worthy nephew, where did those bells of yours come from?" The demon king, being honest by nature, then said, "These bells of mine are—

:「。」:「?」:「Xingzhe laughed and said, "Old Sun's bells came from that very same time as well." The demon king said, "What is their origin, then?" Xingzhe said, "These bells of mine are—

:「The demon king said, "The bells are treasures of the golden elixir — they are not flying birds or running beasts, so how could one tell male from female?。」 As long as you shake out the treasure, that will be good." Wukong said, "Words alone prove nothing—do it and we'll see.。」Let me have you shake them first."

The demon king truly took the first bell and shook it three times, but no fire came out;he shook the second one three times, but no smoke came out;he shook the third one three times, and no sand came out either.:「The demon king panicked and said, "Strange, how strange!。」:「。」The way of the world has changed—these bells must be henpecked; the male, seeing the female, dares not come out." Wukong said, "Worthy nephew, stop a moment and let me shake them too, and you watch." Good Monkey—he grasped all three bells in one hand and shook them all together.Just look—red fire, blue-green smoke, and yellow sand all came rolling out at once, roaring as they scorched the trees and burned the mountain.:「!」滿The Great Sage recited a spell again, and shouted toward the southeast, "Wind, come!" Sure enough, the wind spurred on the fire's force, and the fire rode on the wind's power—red flames blazing, black smoke roiling, the whole sky filled with smoke and fire, the whole ground covered with yellow sand. This frightened Sai Taisui so badly that his soul scattered and his wits flew away; with nowhere to run, how could he escape with his life in the midst of that fire?

:「。」Just then he heard a stern voice call loudly from midair: "Sun Wukong, I have come." Wukong quickly turned to look up, and it was none other than the Bodhisattva Guanyin, holding the pure vase in her left hand and a willow sprig in her right, sprinkling sweet dew to put out the fire.Startled, Wukong hid the bells at his waist, pressed his palms together, and bowed low in worship. The Bodhisattva flicked her willow sprig, scattering a few drops of sweet dew, and in an instant the smoke and fire were completely gone, and not a trace of the yellow sand remained.:「Wukong kowtowed and said, "I did not know the Greatly Compassionate One was descending into the mortal world, and failed to withdraw in respect.?」:「。」:「?」:「May I ask where the Bodhisattva is bound?" The Bodhisattva said, "I have come specially to seek out and capture this demon." Wukong said, "What is this demon's origin, that it should trouble your golden self to descend and capture it?" The Bodhisattva said, "He is the golden-haired hou that I ride.。」:「?」:「Because his herd-boy dozed off and failed to keep watch, this wicked beast bit through its iron chain and ran off, and yet he has been dispelling calamity for the King of Zhuzi." On hearing this, Wukong hastily straightened up and said, "Bodhisattva, you have it backwards. He has been deceiving the king and defiling the queen here, corrupting morals and offending decency, bringing calamity upon the king—yet you say he is dispelling calamity. How can that be?" The Bodhisattva said, "You do not know the whole story.Back when the former king of Zhuzi was on the throne, this present king was still the Crown Prince of the Eastern Palace and had not yet ascended. In his youth he was extremely fond of hunting with the bow.西西He led his men and horses, loosing his hawks and hounds, and came to the front of Luofeng Slope, where the two children born of the Bodhisattva Peacock Great Illustrious King, the Buddha-Mother of the West—a male and a female peacock chick—had folded their wings to rest at the foot of the hill. This king drew his bow and let fly, wounding the male peacock, and the female peacock, also struck by the arrow, returned west along with it.After the Buddha-Mother had finished her penance, she ordained that he be separated from his phoenix mate for three years and suffer bodily illness. At that time I was riding this hou, and together we heard these words.Unexpectedly, this wicked beast took the matter to heart, and so came to deceive the queen in order to dispel the king's calamity.滿Now, after three years, the debt of retribution has been fully paid, and fortunately you have come to cure the king's affliction.。」:「I have come specially to gather in this demon." Wukong said, "Bodhisattva, though this is the story behind it, still he defiled the queen, corrupted morals and offended decency, violated human relations and broke the law—he deserves the death penalty for that. Now, since the Bodhisattva has come in person, his capital crime may be pardoned, but his lesser crime cannot be forgiven.。」:「Let me give him twenty blows of the staff, and then you may take him away." The Bodhisattva said, "Wukong, since you know I have descended in person, you ought to show me some regard and pardon him entirely—it will still count as a merit of yours in subduing a demon;。」:「。」if the staff touches him, he will die." Wukong did not dare argue further, and could only bow and say, "Since the Bodhisattva is taking him back to the sea, you must never again let him descend privately into the mortal world—the harm would be no small thing."

:「Only then did the Bodhisattva give a shout: "Wicked beast!?」Will you not return to your true form now—what are you waiting for?" At once the demon rolled over, revealed its true form, and shook out its furry coat, and the Bodhisattva mounted it.The Bodhisattva then looked down at its neck and saw that the three golden bells were missing.:「。」:「。」:「The Bodhisattva said, "Wukong, return my bells to me." Wukong said, "Old Monkey knows nothing about them." The Bodhisattva shouted, "You thieving ape!If you had not stolen these bells, not to mention one Wukong, even ten of you would not have dared come near him.。」:「。」:「。」:「Hand them over at once." Wukong said with a laugh, "Truly, I have not seen them." The Bodhisattva said, "Since you have not seen them, let me recite the Tight-Fillet Spell." At this Wukong panicked and could only cry, "Don't recite it, don't recite it!。」The bells are right here." Truly it was: who is it that unties the golden bells from the hou's neck? For the one who unties the bell, ask the one who tied it on.The Bodhisattva slipped the bells back onto the hou's neck and leapt up to sit high upon it.滿Just look—beneath its four feet lotus blossoms sprang up in blazing radiance, and over its whole body golden threads flashed and glittered. The Greatly Compassionate One returned to the South Sea; we need say no more of that.

Let us tell instead how the Great Sage Sun straightened his robes, swung his iron staff, and fought his way into Xiezhi Cave, killing every last one of the assembled demons and wiping them out completely. He went straight to the inner palace and invited Her Holy Majesty the Queen to return to her own country. The queen bowed her thanks over and over without end.Wukong related in full the story of the Bodhisattva subduing the demon and the reason behind the phoenixes' separation.:「。」使He gathered some soft grass and bound it into a grass dragon, saying, "Your Majesty, mount this, close your eyes, and do not be afraid—I will carry you back to the court to see your lord." The queen carefully followed his instructions, and Wukong summoned his magic powers; all that could be heard was the wind roaring in her ears.

:「。」殿Within half an hour he had brought her into the city, lowered his cloud, and called out, "Your Majesty, open your eyes." The queen opened her eyes and looked, and recognizing the phoenix towers and dragon halls, her heart filled with joy; she left the grass dragon behind and went up to the throne hall together with Wukong.:「。」:「When the king saw her, he hastily came down from the dragon throne and rushed to grasp the queen's jade hand, wishing to pour out all his feelings of separation, but suddenly he fell to the ground, crying out only, "My hand hurts, my hand hurts!" Bajie roared with laughter and said, "What a face—no luck to enjoy the pleasure!。」:「?」:「便?」:「No sooner had they met than he got himself stung half to death." Wukong said, "Idiot, would you dare pull on her hand?" Bajie said, "What if I did pull on her hand?" Wukong said, "The queen's body has grown poisonous thorns, and there is a stinging poison harmful to the yang on her hand.Ever since she came to Qilin Mountain, in three years with Sai Taisui, that demon never once touched her body.。」:「?」But whoever touches her body suffers bodily pain, and whoever touches her hand suffers pain in the hand." When the assembled officials heard this, they said, "If it is like this, what is to be done?" At this time the officials outside were worried and uncertain, while the consorts and concubines within were struck with fear.Beside him, the two consorts of the Jade Sage and Silver Sage palaces helped the king to his feet.

:「。」Just as everyone was in a state of panic, suddenly a voice was heard calling from midair: "Great Sage, I have come." Wukong raised his head to look, and saw:

Wukong stepped forward to greet him, saying, "Where is Zhang Ziyang bound?" The Perfected Man Ziyang came straight to the front of the hall, bowed with folded hands, and said, "Great Sage, this lesser immortal Zhang Boduan greets you." Wukong returned the greeting and said, "Where have you come from?" The Perfected Man said, "Three years ago this lesser immortal was on his way to a Buddhist assembly, and passing through here I saw that the King of Zhuzi was troubled by the separation of the phoenixes. I feared that the demon would defile and disgrace the queen, ruining human morals so that in later days she could not be reunited with the king, so I transformed an old palm-fiber cloak into a new rainbow robe, radiant with five colors, and presented it to the demon king, telling him to have the queen put it on as new finery.穿As soon as the queen put it on her body, poisonous thorns grew all over her. Those poisonous thorns were in fact the palm-fiber cloak.。」:「。」Now, knowing that the Great Sage had succeeded, I have come specially to lift the curse." Wukong said, "Since that is so, I am sorry to have troubled you to come so far—please hurry and undo it." The Perfected Man walked forward, pointed his hand at the queen, and at once the palm-fiber cloak came off her.The queen's whole body was restored just as it had been before.:「。」:「。」:「。」The Perfected Man shook the cloak once and draped it over his own shoulders, and said to Wukong, "Great Sage, do not blame me—this lesser immortal takes his leave." Wukong said, "Wait a moment, and let the king thank you." The Perfected Man laughed and said, "No need, no need." Then, with a deep bow, he rose into the air and departed. In their astonishment, the emperor, the queen, and all the officials great and small each bowed in worship toward the sky.

When the worship was finished, the king at once ordered the Eastern Pavilion thrown wide open to hold a feast in thanks for the four monks. The king led everyone in kneeling and bowing, and only then were husband and wife reunited in harmony.:「。」Just as the joyful banquet was underway, Wukong called out, "Master, bring out that letter of challenge." The elder took it from his sleeve and handed it to Wukong.:「Wukong passed it to the king, saying, "This letter was sent here by a junior officer dispatched by that demon. That junior officer had already been killed by me beforehand, and I brought his body back to report my achievement.Afterward I went back to the mountain, transformed myself into that junior officer, and entered the cave to report back, and in this way managed to see the queen and steal out the golden bells—though I very nearly got caught by him.I transformed myself again, stole out once more, and fought him in open battle.。……」Fortunately I met the Bodhisattva Guanyin, who took him away, and who also told me the reason for the phoenixes' separation..." And he related the whole affair from beginning to end in detail.Throughout the whole kingdom, ruler and ministers, inside the court and out, there was not a single person who did not offer thanks and praise.:「Tang Seng said, "This is, first, due to the good fortune of the worthy king, and second, to the merit of my disciples. Now, favored with this lavish banquet, we have received the utmost—the utmost indeed.西。」Let us take our leave here, so as not to delay this poor monk's journey westward." The king could not persuade them to stay, and so he had the travel rescript reissued, arranged a grand imperial procession, and invited Tang Seng to sit securely in a dragon carriage. The king and the queen and consorts all held the wheel hubs and pushed the carriage, seeing them off with a parting escort.Truly it was:

What it’s about

Armed with Sai Tai Sui's stolen golden bells, Wukong returns to battle and makes the demon suffer the fire, smoke and sand that had defeated him. The monster flees until Guanyin arrives and identifies him as her golden-haired beast, which escaped while its keeper slept. She subdues and reclaims him, explaining both the bells' celestial origin and the protective garment that has kept the captive queen beyond his touch.

Wukong escorts the Golden-Sage Palace Lady back to Vermilion-Purple Kingdom, but the divine garment still clings painfully to her body. At Guanyin's direction it is removed, completing a rescue that neither stolen weapons nor victory alone could finish. King and queen reunite, the court thanks the pilgrims and the royal illness finally loses its cause. After gifts and celebration, Sanzang's party resumes the western road rather than remaining to enjoy the honor earned there.

When it was written 背景

The close of the Vermilion-Purple episode resolves three forms of disorder together: a demon's theft, a ruler's sick body and a marriage held apart. Guanyin's arrival limits Wukong's apparent ownership of victory, since the beast and bells belong to her household and the queen's protection also came from a higher power. Yet Wukong's intelligence made that protection effective as rescue rather than mere endurance. Learners can trace the repeated language of 收, 還 and 脫: weapon, animal, garment and wife must each be returned to a proper relation before the pilgrims can leave.
