The False Thunderclap Temple and the Yellow-Brow Demon
第065回Chapter 65
Now Tang Sanzang’s single-minded devotion was such that, quite apart from the protection of the heavenly gods, even the spirits of plants and trees came to guide him on his way; after an elegant gathering lasting one night, he escaped the thorns and briars, with no more trailing vines to entangle him. The four travelers continued westward for a long while; winter was again drawing to its close, and the spring season had arrived:
Master and disciples, too, sought out fragrant blossoms and trod the green, leisurely following the horse’s pace. As they traveled, they suddenly saw a lofty mountain, which from afar seemed to meet the sky. Sanzang pointed with his whip and said, “Wukong, who knows how high that mountain may be? It seems to join the azure heavens and pierce the blue firmament.” Wukong replied, “Does not the old poem say, ‘Above it there is only Heaven; no other mountain stands its peer’? It merely means that the mountain is exceedingly high and that none can compare with it; how could it truly touch Heaven?” Bajie said, “If mountains do not touch Heaven, why is Mount Kunlun called the Pillar of Heaven?” Wukong said, “You do not understand. Since ancient times it has been said that ‘Heaven is incomplete in the northwest.’ Mount Kunlun stands in the northwest, in the qian position; hence it is imagined to prop up Heaven and fill the sky, and so is called the Pillar of Heaven.” Sha Seng laughed and said, “Elder Brother, do not tell him such fine things; once he hears them, he will go and lecture others. Let us keep on our way; when we have climbed the mountain, we shall know how high it is.”
That fool caught up with Sha Seng, and the two romped and sparred together. Their master’s horse flew onward as if on wings. In a short while they reached the foot of the mountain cliffs and began ascending step by step. This was the mountain they saw:
At the sight of it, Tang Sanzang’s heart quailed. Sun Wukong possessed vast supernatural powers: see how, with a roar and a flourish of his golden-hooped staff, he frightened away wolves, insects, tigers, and leopards, opened a path, and led his master straight up the lofty mountain. After crossing the ridge and descending to level ground on its western side, they suddenly saw auspicious light glowing through billowing multicolored mist; amid it stood halls, towers, and pavilions, while the faint, melodious sounds of bells and chimes drifted forth. Sanzang said, “Disciples, see what sort of place that is.” Wukong raised his head, shaded his eyes with one hand, and looked carefully; what a splendid place it was over there!
After looking, Wukong reported, “Master, that place is a monastery; yet I do not know why, amid its holy light and auspicious haze, there is also an air of menace. Judging by the scene, it resembles Leiyin, yet the road does not accord with it. When we reach it, we must on no account enter rashly, lest we fall victim to some cruel hand.” Tang Seng said, “Since it bears the aspect of Leiyin, could it not be Ling Mountain itself? Do not thwart my sincere devotion and delay the purpose of my journey.” Wukong said, “No, no.靈山之路,我也走過幾遍,那是這路途?」 I have traveled the road to Ling Mountain several times; how could this be that road?” Bajie said, “Even if it is not, some good person must surely live there.” Sha Seng said, “There is no need for so much doubt. This road plainly passes before its gate; one look will tell us whether it is or not.” Wukong said, “Wujing speaks reasonably.”
The elder urged his horse forward until they reached the mountain gate. Seeing the three large characters “Leiyin Monastery,” he tumbled from his horse in alarm, fell to the ground, and cursed, “You wretched macaque! You have nearly ruined me! It plainly is Leiyin Monastery, and still you deceive me.” Wukong said with an appeasing smile, “Master, do not be angry; look again. There are four characters over the gate. How is it that you read only three and then blame me?” Trembling, the elder climbed to his feet and looked again. There were indeed four characters: “Little Leiyin Monastery.” Sanzang said, “Even if it is Little Leiyin Monastery, there must surely be a Buddha within. The scriptures speak of three thousand Buddhas, who presumably do not all dwell in one place: Guanyin is in the Southern Sea, Puxian on Mount Emei, and Wenshu on Mount Wutai. I wonder which Buddha’s sacred precinct this is. The ancients said, ‘Where there is a Buddha, there are scriptures; nowhere is without its treasure.’ We may go inside.” Wukong said, “We must not enter; this place promises little good and much ill. If disaster befalls us, do not blame me.” Sanzang said, “Even if there is no Buddha, there must at least be an image of one.我弟子心願,遇佛拜佛,如何怪你?」My vow as a disciple is to bow whenever I meet a Buddha; how could I blame you?”
He at once ordered Bajie to fetch his kasaya; then he changed into his monk’s cap, put his robes in proper order, and stepped forward. From within the mountain gate a voice called, “Tang Seng, you have come from the Eastern Land to pay homage to my Buddha; why are you still so remiss?” On hearing this, Sanzang immediately bowed down. Bajie kowtowed as well, and Sha Seng also fell to his knees. Only the Great Sage stayed behind, leading the horse and attending to the luggage. When they had just entered the second gate, they saw the great hall of the Tathagata. Outside its doors and beneath the jeweled dais were arrayed five hundred arhats, three thousand jiedi, four vajra guardians, eight bodhisattvas, bhikshunis, upasakas, and countless holy monks and Daoists. The flowers and incense were truly resplendent, and auspicious vapors shimmered in profusion. So flustered were the elder, Bajie, and Sha Seng that they bowed at every step as they advanced to the sacred dais. Wukong openly refused to bow. Then a stern voice cried from the lotus throne, “Sun Wukong, why do you not bow before the Tathagata?” Wukong scrutinized them again, perceived that they were impostors, dropped the horse’s reins and the baggage, drew his staff, and shouted, “You pack of evil beasts are brazen indeed! How dare you falsely assume the Buddha’s name and sully the Tathagata’s pure virtue? Do not flee!” Gripping his staff in both hands, he swung it and charged. But a clang rang out in midair, and a pair of golden cymbals dropped down, closing over Wukong from head to foot and trapping him inside. In alarm, Zhu Bajie and Sha Heshang hurriedly raised rake and staff, but the arhats, jiedi, holy monks, and Daoists surged forward and surrounded them; caught unprepared, both were seized. They also captured Sanzang. All three were wound in cords, bound with ropes, and securely tied fast.
As it turned out, the one impersonating the Buddha on the lotus throne was a demon king, while all the arhats and the rest were lesser fiends. They put away the Buddha’s likeness and resumed their demonic forms. They carried the three captives into the rear and locked them away. As for Wukong, they left him sealed inside the golden cymbals, never to be released, and set them upon the jeweled dais, decreeing that in three days and nights he should dissolve into blood and pus. Once he had dissolved, they would steam the other three in an iron cage and feast on them.這正是:Just so:
The demons then shut Tang Seng’s three companions away in the rear;把馬拴在後邊;they tethered the horse behind the monastery;把他的袈裟、僧帽安在行李擔內,亦收藏了。and they placed his kasaya and monk’s cap in the luggage and stored that away as well. There we leave them under strict confinement.
Now Wukong, sealed inside the golden cymbals, found himself in pitch darkness; stifled until sweat streamed over his whole body, he thrust left and rammed right but could not escape. In desperation he struck wildly with his iron staff, but could not move the cymbals by the slightest fraction. At his wits’ end, he braced his body outward, intending to burst the golden cymbals apart. He formed a spell with his fingers and grew a thousand hundred zhang tall;那金鐃也隨他身長,全無一些瑕縫光明。but the golden cymbals expanded with his body, without opening the least crack to admit any light. He then formed another spell and shrank himself until he was as tiny as a mustard seed;那鐃也就隨身小了,更無些些孔竅。but the cymbals shrank with him, leaving not the smallest hole. He breathed immortal breath upon his iron staff and cried, “Change!” It became like a banner pole and propped the golden cymbals apart. Then he selected two long hairs from the back of his head, plucked them out, and cried, “Change!” They became five-fluted, plum-blossom-headed drills. Setting them beside the staff, he bored a thousand hundred times, but though they rang out with a hard metallic clang, they could not penetrate in the least. Growing desperate, Wukong formed a spell and recited the incantation, “Om, purity throughout the Dharma-realm; qian, origin, fruition, benefit, constancy,” thereby summoning the jiedi of the five regions, the Six Ding and Six Jia spirits, and the eighteen guardian qielan, who called from outside the golden cymbals, “Great Sage, we are all protecting your master and keeping the demons from harming him. Why have you summoned us?” Wukong replied, “My master refused to heed my advice; even if they kill him, he will have only himself to blame. But you must quickly use your powers to lift these cymbals, release me, and then we can decide what to do. No light enters here, and I am stifled and feverish all over; will this place not smother me to death?” The gods tried in earnest to lift the cymbals, but they seemed grown together and could not be moved by the slightest fraction. The Golden-Headed Jiedi said, “Great Sage, we do not know what sort of treasure these cymbals may be; top and bottom have fused into a single piece. Our divine strength is meager, and we cannot lift them.” Wukong said, “Inside here I have used every power I possess, yet I cannot move them either.”
On hearing this, the jiedi ordered the Six Ding spirits to protect Tang Seng, the Six Jia spirits to guard the golden cymbals, and all the qielan to keep watch before and behind. He himself mounted an auspicious radiance and, in a moment, rushed through the Southern Gate of Heaven. Without waiting to be summoned, he went straight to the Hall of Numinous Heaven, prostrated himself before the Jade Emperor, and reported, “My lord, your subject is an emissary of the jiedi of the five regions. The Great Sage Equal to Heaven is now escorting Tang Seng to fetch the scriptures, and on the road they encountered a mountain bearing a place called Little Leiyin Monastery. Tang Seng mistook it for Ling Mountain and entered to worship; but it proved to be a sham contrived by demons, who trapped master and disciples and sealed the Great Sage inside a pair of golden cymbals. With no way forward or back, he is on the verge of death, and so I have come especially to report this.” The Jade Emperor immediately issued a decree: “Dispatch the stars of the twenty-eight lunar mansions at once to deliver him from peril and subdue the demons.”
The star lords dared not delay; accompanying the jiedi, they left Heaven’s gate and reached the monastery grounds at about the second watch of the night. Because they had captured Tang Seng, all the demons, great and small, had been rewarded by their old king and had gone off to sleep. Without raising any alarm, the star lords gathered outside the cymbals and announced, “Great Sage, we are the stars of the twenty-eight lunar mansions, sent by the Jade Emperor to rescue you.” Overjoyed to hear this, Wukong instructed them, “Use your weapons to smash them; then Old Sun can come out.” The star lords replied, “We dare not strike them. This object is a treasure of solid gold; a blow would surely make it ring, and the sound would alarm the demons, making your rescue difficult. Let us pry it open with our weapons. The instant you see the least glimmer of light inside, make your escape.” Wukong said, “Exactly so.” Then some wielded spears, some swords, some sabers, and some axes;扛的扛,擡的擡,掀的掀,捎的捎。some heaved, some lifted, some levered, and some pried. They worked until the third watch, but it remained utterly unmoved, as though cast whole in a single piece. Inside, Wukong peered east and west, crawled this way and rolled that, but could not see the least glimmer of light.
Kangjinlong said, “Great Sage, do not grow impatient. This treasure appears to be an object that responds to its owner’s will, and it must surely be capable of transformation. From inside, feel with your hand along the seam where the halves meet. I shall push the tip of my horn through; then you can transform yourself and escape wherever it loosens.” Wukong obeyed and began feeling all about inside. The star lord made his body small, until the tip of his horn was as fine as a needle, and inserted it through the seam where the cymbals joined. Pitifully, only after exerting a thousand jin of force did he manage to pierce through to the inside.卻將本身與角使法像,叫:「長!Then he cast a spell over his body and horn, crying, “Grow! Grow!” The horn grew until it was as thick as a bowl. Yet the mouth of the cymbals did not seem cast of metal, but rather grown of living flesh: it closed tightly around Kangjinlong’s horn, leaving not the least crack anywhere. Wukong felt the horn and called, “This will not do; there is not a hair’s breadth of looseness above or below. There is no help for it—you must endure a little pain and carry me out.” That splendid Great Sage changed his golden-hooped staff into a steel drill, bored a hole into the tip of the horn, shrank himself to the size of a mustard seed, squeezed into the hole, crouched there, and cried, “Pull your horn out! Pull your horn out!” No one knew how much more strength the star lord expended before he finally drew it free; utterly spent, with his sinews limp, he collapsed to the ground.
Wukong crawled out through the hole in the tip of his horn, resumed his true form, drew his iron staff, and struck the cymbals with a resounding clang, like a mountain of bronze collapsing or a mine of gold bursting open. Alas, he smashed that Buddhist vessel into a thousand hundred fragments of scattered gold. The twenty-eight lunar mansions were startled into confusion, the jiedi of the five regions felt their hair stand on end, and every demon, great and small, awoke from sleep. The old demon king started awake in alarm, sprang up, threw on his clothes, beat the drum, assembled and mustered his demons, and had each take up a weapon. By then dawn was about to break. They swarmed beneath the jeweled dais and, seeing Sun Wukong and the assembled star lords surrounding the shattered golden cymbals, turned pale with shock. The demon king at once commanded, “Little ones! Shut the front gate tight, and let no one escape.”
On hearing this, Wukong led the host of stars onto their clouds and leapt high into the ninth heaven. The demon king gathered up the broken gold, deployed his demon troops, and arrayed them outside the mountain gate. Harboring bitter hatred but having no other recourse, the demon king donned his armor, took up a short, supple wolf-tooth club, came out of his camp, and shouted, “Sun Wukong, a true man does not flee far away into the sky! Come forward at once and fight me for three bouts.” Unable to contain himself, Wukong led the star lords down from the clouds to see what the demon looked like. This was his appearance:
Wukong leveled his iron staff and shouted, “What manner of monster are you, that you dare impersonate the Buddha, seize this mountain, and set up a sham Little Leiyin Monastery?” The demon king replied, “This monkey does not even know my name, yet has come to trespass upon my immortal mountain. This place is called Little Western Heaven. Through my cultivation I attained the true fruit, and Heaven bestowed these jeweled halls and precious towers upon me. My name is Old Buddha Yellow Brows. The people here do not know this, but merely call me Great King Yellow Brows or Grandfather Yellow Brows. I have long known that you were journeying west and possessed certain abilities; therefore I set up these images to display my powers and lure your master inside, so that I might make a wager with you. If you defeat me, I shall spare master and disciples and let you attain the true fruit;如若不能,將汝等打死,等我去見如來取經,果正中華也。」 but if you cannot, I shall beat you all to death, then go myself to the Tathagata, fetch the scriptures, and bring the true fruit to China.” Wukong laughed and said, “Demon, spare me your boasting. Since you want a wager, come forward quickly and taste my staff.” The demon king beamed with delight and raised his wolf-tooth club to meet it. A splendid battle followed:
The two fought for fifty rounds without either gaining the victory. At the mountain gate, gongs sounded and drums thundered, while the demons shouted and waved their banners. On this side were the celestial troops of the Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions and the assembled holy ones of the Five Directions’ Jiedi, each shouldering his weapon. With a shout, they surrounded the demon chief, so frightening the fiends outside the mountain gate that they could scarcely beat their drums and, trembling with fear and weak in the hands, could not strike their gongs. The old demon, wholly unafraid, wielded his wolf-toothed club in one hand and held off the assembled warriors;一隻手去腰間解下一條舊白布搭包兒,往上一拋,滑的一聲響喨,把孫大聖、二十八宿與五方揭諦,一搭包兒通裝將去,挎在肩上,拽步回身。with the other, he untied an old white-cloth bundle from his waist and tossed it into the air. With a sharp, ringing swish, it swept Sun Dasheng, the Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions, and the Five Directions’ Jiedi all together into the bundle. Slinging it over his shoulder, he wheeled about and strode away. The lesser demons all returned in triumph, rejoicing. The old demon ordered his underlings to fetch thirty or fifty hempen ropes, opened the bundle, and bound the captives one by one as he took them out. Every one of them was limp in bone and numb in sinew, with skin all sunken and wrinkled. Once bound, they were carried to the rear and, without distinction, all flung upon the ground. The demon king then ordered a banquet laid and drank his fill; they did not disperse until dusk, though they had begun at dawn, and each retired to his sleeping quarters. Of this we shall say no more.
Now Sun Dasheng and the other gods lay bound until midnight, when suddenly they heard someone weeping. Listening closely, he discovered that it was Sanzang’s voice, crying, “Wukong, ah, I—”
Hearing this, Xingzhe secretly felt pity and thought, “Though Master would not heed my words and has now met with this calamity, still, amid his tribulations, he remembers old Sun. While the night is quiet, the demons asleep, and no one is on guard, I had better free everyone so that we may escape with our lives.”
Good Dasheng employed the art of bodily concealment, shrank himself, slipped free of the ropes, and went to Tang Seng’s side, calling, “Master.” Recognizing his voice, the elder cried, “How did you come here?” Xingzhe quietly told him all that had happened before. The elder was overjoyed and said, “Disciple, quickly save me. In all that comes hereafter, I shall leave matters to you and never insist on having my own way again.” Only then did Xingzhe set to work: first he freed his master, and then Bajie and Sha Seng. He also freed the Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions and the Five Directions’ Jiedi, one by one. Then he brought over the horse and told them to hurry out ahead of him. They had only just gone through the gate when he remembered that he did not know where the luggage was, so he went back to look for it. Kangjinlong said, “You truly prize possessions above people. Having rescued your master should be enough; why go searching for the luggage as well?” Xingzhe replied, “People are important, certainly, but the robe and bowl are more important still. The bundle contains our travel rescript, the brocade cassock, and the purple-gold alms bowl, all supreme treasures of the Buddhist faith. How could we abandon them?” Bajie said, “Brother, you go and search; we shall wait for you on the road.” And so the host of stars clustered around Tang Seng, employed their arts of conveyance, and together worked their divine powers. In a gust of wind they whisked him beyond the encircling walls, hastened to the main road, descended the mountainside, and encamped on level ground to wait.
At about the third watch, Sun Dasheng lightened his tread and crept inside, only to find every successive gate tightly secured. He climbed to the top of a tall building and looked, but all its windows were shut. He wanted to go down, yet feared the lattice would make a noise and dared not push it. He formed a spell with his fingers, shook himself, and changed into an immortal mouse, commonly called a bat. And what did he look like?
Following the gap beneath the rafters where the tiles had not been sealed, he squeezed inside, passed through door after door, and reached the middle. There, beneath the window of the third storey, he saw a glittering ray of fine light. It was neither the light of lamp or candle, nor the glow of a firefly, nor yet the radiance of flying clouds or the flash of lightning. Half flying and half hopping, he drew near the window and looked: it was the bundle giving off the light. The demon had stripped Tang Seng of his cassock and, without even folding it, had crammed it untidily into the bundle. The cassock was itself a Buddhist treasure, adorned with wish-fulfilling pearls, mani jewels, red agate, purple coral, relics, and night-shining pearls; hence its radiance shone through. Seeing the robe and bowl, he rejoiced inwardly, resumed his true form, took up the load, and, without caring whether its carrying-rope sat straight or crooked, hoisted it onto his shoulder and started downstairs. Unexpectedly, one end slipped free and fell with a thump upon the floorboards, making a great clattering crash. Would you believe it? By sheer coincidence, the old demon was sleeping downstairs. The crash startled him awake, and he sprang up shouting wildly, “Someone is here! Someone is here!” All the demons, great and small, arose, lit lamps and torches, and rushed about shouting, searching before and behind. One came to report, “Tang Seng is gone.” Another came to report, “Xingzhe and all the others are gone too.” The old demon hastily issued orders: “Guard every gate closely!” Hearing this, Xingzhe feared being caught once more in the demon’s snare. Unable to shoulder the bundle properly, he turned a somersault and leapt out through an upper window.
The demon searched everywhere but could not find Tang Seng and the others. Seeing that daybreak was near, he took up his club and led his horde in pursuit. There below the mountainside he saw the Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions, the Five Directions’ Jiedi, and the other gods encamped amid billowing clouds and mist. The demon king roared, “Where do you think you are going? Here I come!” Jiaomujiao hurriedly called, “Brothers, the monster is coming!” Kangjinlong, Dishufu, Fangritu, Xinyuehu, WeihuoHu, Jishuibao, Doumuxie, Niujinniu, Nütuluo, Xurishu, Weiyueyan, Shihuozhu, Bishuiyu, Kuimulang, Loujingou, Weituzhi, Maoriji, Biyuewu, Zuihuohou, Shenshuiyuan, Jingmuhan, Guijinyang, Liutuzhang, Xingrima, Zhangyuelu, Yihuoshe, and Zhenshuiyin led the Golden-Headed Jiedi, the Silver-Headed Jiedi, the gods of the Six Jia and Six Ding, the Guardian Jialan, and the other deities, together with Bajie and Sha Seng. Without taking Tang Sanzang, and having left the White Dragon Horse behind, they each grasped a weapon and surged forward as one. Seeing them, the demon king gave a cold chuckle and sounded a whistle. Four or five thousand demons, great and small, each fierce and mighty, plunged into a confused battle on the western slope. A splendid slaughter it was:
The demon fought with redoubled valor, leading his horde forward in a crushing assault.
Just as neither side could gain the victory, they suddenly heard Xingzhe roar, “Old Sun is here!” Bajie met him and asked, “What of the luggage?” Xingzhe replied, “Old Sun barely escaped with his life, and you still ask about the luggage!” Gripping his precious staff, Sha Seng said, “Enough talk—hurry and fight the demons!” The Lunar Mansions, Jiedi, Ding and Jia gods, and the rest were surrounded at the heart of the battlefield by the demon horde and fought in utter confusion, while the old demon swung his club at the three disciples. Xingzhe, Bajie, and Sha Seng met him, one plying his cudgel, one whirling his rake, and one wielding his staff. Truly, earth grew dark and heaven dim, yet they could not gain the victory. They fought until the Sun Star sank behind the western mountain’s foot and the Moon Star rose above the eastern sea peaks. When the demon saw that night had fallen, he sounded his whistle and warned every fiend to be on guard, while he himself brought out his treasure. Sun Xingzhe saw it clearly: the monster had untied the cloth bundle and now held it in his hand. Xingzhe cried, “This is bad—run!” He could spare no thought for Bajie, Sha Seng, or the host of heaven, but turned somersault after somersault and leapt high into the ninth heaven. The gods, Bajie, and Sha Seng did not understand his meaning. The demon tossed the treasure into the air and swept them all inside again; only Xingzhe escaped. The demon king withdrew his troops to the monastery and again ordered ropes to be brought, binding the captives as before. Tang Seng, Bajie, and Sha Seng were hung high from the rafters; the White Horse was tethered at the rear; and all the gods were likewise bound, carried into an underground cellar, and sealed beneath its locked cover. The demons obeyed and secured them one by one. Of this we shall say no more.
Now Sun Xingzhe, having leapt into the ninth heaven, had saved his life. Seeing the demon troops turn back without displaying their banners, he knew that all the others had been captured. He lowered his auspicious cloud and landed on the summit of the eastern mountain. Gnashing his teeth in hatred of the monster and shedding tears as he thought of Tang Seng, he raised his face to heaven and gazed upward, until in his grief he suddenly cried aloud. In what former life did you bring upon yourself these cruel tribulations, that in this life you meet demons at every step? How can we escape suffering such as this? What am I to do?” Alone, he sighed and lamented for a long while. Then he composed his spirit and pondered, asking himself in his heart, “What manner of bundle can that demon possess, that it can hold so many things? Now it has even swallowed all those celestial gods and generals and that whole multitude of people. I would seek help in Heaven, but I fear the Jade Emperor would blame me. I remember a Zhenwu of the North, titled the Heavenly Venerable Who Quells Demons. He now dwells on Mount Wudang in Nanzhanbuzhou. I shall go ask him to rescue Master from this calamity.” And so it is said:
What truly came of this journey is unknown; listen to the explanation in the next chapter.

What it’s about
A magnificent monastery called Little Thunderclap appears ahead, and Tripitaka believes that the party may have reached the Buddha at last. Wukong warns that the place feels false, but the monk enters and bows to the enthroned figure. The supposed Buddha is the Yellow-Browed Great King. At his command demons seize the pilgrims, and a pair of golden cymbals closes around Wukong so tightly that neither his staff nor transformations can break the metal prison.
Celestial helpers pry open the cymbals after Wukong signals his distress, but Yellow Brows immediately deploys a cloth sack that sucks gods and disciples inside. Wukong alone escapes and tries repeated rescues while Tripitaka's company and their would-be allies remain bound. The false monastery thus defeats recognition, force and reinforcements in turn. Its ruler intends to replace the true scripture mission with a spectacle of his own sanctity, making counterfeit religious authority the chapter's central trap.
When it was written 背景
Little Thunderclap imitates the name and visual grammar of the Buddha's Vulture Peak, exploiting Tripitaka's longing for arrival. His reverence becomes a vulnerability when appearance outruns discernment, while Wukong's suspicion is correct but insufficient to protect a master determined to bow. The golden cymbals and human sack are religious-looking implements converted into technologies of confinement. Learners should attend to titles and gestures—who sits above, who kneels, and who commands—rather than becoming lost in the arriving deities. The chapter delays revelation of the demon's owner, so its repeated failed rescues emphasize a wider theme: a convincing sacred copy can capture even those who sincerely seek the original.
