The Buddha Maitreya Subdues the Yellow-Brow Demon

066Chapter 66

This tells how Sun Dasheng, having no plan left to try, rode a wisp of auspicious cloud, mounted his somersault cloud, and turned straight back to Nanzhanbuzhou to pay respects at Wudang Shan, to seek out Dangmo Tianzun and ask him to resolve the calamity befalling Sanzang, Bajie, Sha Seng, and the host of heavenly soldiers. He never paused as he flew through midair, and before a day had passed he already spied the immortal realm of the Patriarch; lightly he pressed his cloud down and fixed his eyes to look — what a fine place it was:

The Heavenly Patriarch above was born when the King of Jingle Country and Empress Shanshen dreamed of swallowing the light of the sun, and upon waking found themselves with child; after fourteen months of pregnancy, in the first year of Kaihuang, the year jiachen, on the first day of the third month, at the hour of noon, he was born in the royal palace. That venerable one:

Sun Dasheng, admiring the scenery of this immortal realm, soon came to the First Heavenly Gate, the Second Heavenly Gate, and the Third Heavenly Gate.He reached the outside of the Taihe Palace, when suddenly, amid auspicious light and propitious vapors, he saw five hundred Spirit Officials clustered together.:「?」:「。」The Spirit Officials came forward to meet him, saying, "Who is that coming?" The Great Sage said, "I am the Great Sage Equaling Heaven, Sun Wukong, and I wish to see the Master and Minister." Hearing this, the Spirit Officials went at once to report.殿The Patriarch at once came down from the hall and welcomed him into the Taihe Palace.:「。」 Xingzhe made his bow and said, "There is a matter I trouble you with." The Patriarch asked, "What matter?" Xingzhe said, "I am escorting Tang Seng to the Western Heaven to fetch scriptures, and along the way we met with danger and hardship.西西On reaching Xiniuhezhou, there is a mountain called Xiaoxitian, and at the Xiaolei Yin Temple there is a demon. When my master entered the temple gate, he saw arhats, Jiedi, bhikshus, and holy monks arrayed there, and taking them for the true Buddha, he prostrated himself at once to worship — whereupon he was suddenly seized and bound by the demon.I too was careless in my guard, and he flung out a pair of golden cymbals and clamped me inside, without so much as a hair's breadth of a gap, the mouth sealed shut like pincers.宿It was only through the great help of Jintou Jiedi, who reported the matter and memorialized the Jade Emperor, that the Twenty-Eight Constellations were specially dispatched, descending to the mortal world that very night, though even they could not pry the cymbals apart.Fortunately the Constellation of Kang Jin the Dragon managed to thrust his horn through into the cymbals and thereby delivered me out; I then smashed the golden cymbals to pieces, startling the monster awake.宿In the midst of the pursuing battle, he again cast out a white cloth sack, and gathered up myself, the Twenty-Eight Constellations, and the Five Quarters' Jiedi, all of us bagged inside, and then bound us further with rope.It was I who escaped that very night and rescued the star spirits and the rest, along with my Tang Seng and the others.Afterward, in searching for my robe and bowl, I again startled the monster, and fought with the heavenly soldiers in pursuit. The demon again brought out his sack, and just as he was about to work it, I recognized the sound from before and so fled. All the others were once again bagged by him.。」:「I had no plan left to try, and so have come especially to beg the Master and Minister for aid." The Patriarch said, "In years past I held awesome sway over the North, governing the position of Zhenwu, cutting down demons and evil spirits under Heaven — this by the Jade Emperor's own decree.Later still, with hair unbound and feet bare, treading the coiled serpent-turtle spirit, leading the Five Thunder Generals, giant chimera, lions, fierce beasts, and poisonous dragons, I subdued the black vapors and demon fiends of the northeast — this by the summons and talisman of the Yuanshi Tianzun.殿Today I dwell in quiet enjoyment on Wudang Shan, at ease in the Taihe Hall, and for a long while now the seas and mountains have been calm, heaven and earth at peace.Yet it is hard to help that in the lands of Nanzhanbuzhou and Beijuluzhou, demons cut and slash and evil ghosts lurk in hiding; now that the Great Sage has descended to visit me, I cannot but act.It is only that without an edict from the upper realms, I dare not raise arms on my own authority. Were I to lawfully dispatch my host of spirits, I fear the Jade Emperor would find fault with me;yet were I to flatly refuse the Great Sage, that too would be for me to go against human feeling.西I reckon that on that western road, even if there is some demon evil, it is not likely to prove a great calamity.。」I will now send the Tortoise and Serpent Generals along with my Five Great Spirit Dragons to aid you, and see to it that the demon is caught and your master's calamity resolved."

Xingzhe bowed in thanks to the Patriarch, and at once, together with the Tortoise, Serpent, and Dragon Spirits, each bringing their finest troops, turned back toward the borders of the Western Continent. Before a day had passed, they reached the Xiaolei Yin Temple, brought their clouds down, and went straight to challenge battle outside the mountain gate.

:「。」:「。」:「Now it tells how the Great King Huangmei had gathered his band of demons beneath the Precious Pavilion and was saying, "Sun Xingzhe has not come these past two days — who knows to what quarter he has gone to borrow troops." Before he had finished speaking, a little demon at the front gate reported, "Xingzhe has brought several dragon, serpent, and tortoise ministers, and is calling for battle outside the gate." The demon said, "How could this monkey have gotten hold of dragon, serpent, and tortoise ministers??」:「?」:「What sort of creatures are these, and from what quarter have they come?" He at once donned his armor and strode out of the mountain gate, calling loudly, "You there — of what dragon-spirit lineage are you, that you dare come to violate my immortal realm?" The Five Dragons and the Two Generals, of fierce and towering countenance, spirits bristling, shouted back, "You rank fiend!I am one of the Five Dragon Spirits and the Tortoise and Serpent Generals in the service of Dangmo Tianzun, Lord of the Mixed Origin Teaching at Taihe Palace on Wudang Shan. Now, at the invitation of the Great Sage Equaling Heaven, and by the talisman-summons of our Heavenly Worthy, we have come here to capture you.You demon, quickly send out Tang Seng and the star-generals, and you may yet escape death;。」:「otherwise, we shall hack the very demons of this mountain to bits and burn its rooms to ashes." When the monster heard this, great anger rose in his heart, and he said, "You beasts, what powers do you have, that you dare speak such big words?。」使Don't run — taste my staff!" The five dragons then turned clouds and drove rain, the two generals stirred up dust and sand, and each wielding spear, blade, sword, or halberd, together they pressed the attack;使Sun Dasheng too followed after with his iron rod. What a fine battle this was:

Xingzhe, leading the Five Dragons and Two Generals, fought the demon for about half an hour, when the monster suddenly untied the sack from his side and held it in hand.:「。」Xingzhe, seeing this, was struck with alarm and cried out, "All of you, be careful!" But the Dragon Spirits, Serpent, and Tortoise had no idea what "be careful" meant, and one after another they all stopped fighting and pressed forward to face him.The monster gave a shake and flung the sack up into the air.Sun Dasheng, with no thought to spare for the Five Dragons and Two Generals, mounted his somersault cloud and leapt into the ninth heaven to escape. The monster had once again bagged the Dragon Spirits and the Tortoise and Serpent into his sack and carried them off.The monster returned to the temple in triumph, and had them likewise bound with rope and carried off to be shut away in the earthen cellar — but no more of that for now.

:「。」Now see how the Great Sage brought his cloud down and lay slanting upon a mountain peak, utterly spiritless and downcast, saying bitterly, "This monster is exceedingly fierce." Before he knew it, his eyes closed as if in sleep.:「。」Suddenly he heard someone call, "Great Sage, don't pretend to sleep — hurry and press on to seek help, your master's life hangs by a thread!" Xingzhe opened his eyes with a start and leapt up to look, and it turned out to be the Duty God of the Day.:「Xingzhe shouted, "You hairy spirit, all this while you've been off somewhere greedily enjoying blood offerings, never coming to report for duty, and now today you come to startle me instead.。」:「Stretch out your ankle-bones and let old Monkey give you two strokes of the rod to relieve my gloom." The Duty God hastily made a bow and said, "Great Sage, you are the Star of Joy among mortals — what gloom could you have??」:「We received the Bodhisattva's decree early on, instructing us to secretly guard and protect Tang Seng, and together with the Land Gods and other spirits we dare not leave his side even for a moment, and so we could not come often to pay our respects — how could you instead reproach us for it?" Xingzhe said, "If you are indeed protecting him, then where are the star spirits, the Jiedi, the Sangharama, and my master now, trapped by the demon??」:「殿What sufferings are they enduring?" The Duty God said, "Your master and fellow disciples are all hung up beneath the corridor of the Precious Hall, while the star spirits and the rest have all been shut in the earthen cellar to suffer. These past two days we had heard no news of the Great Sage, but just now we saw the monster capture the dragon spirits, tortoise, and serpent as well, and send them likewise into the cellar, and only then did we realize these were troops the Great Sage had gone to request; this lowly spirit came especially to seek out the Great Sage.。」Great Sage, do not shrink from weariness — by all means hurry once more to seek rescue."

:「Hearing this, Xingzhe could not help but shed tears before the Duty God, saying, "I am now ashamed to face the Heavenly Palace above, and abashed to approach the treasure-halls of the sea;I fear to ask the Bodhisattva the reason, and dread to look upon the jade image of the Tathagata. Those just captured were the very Tortoise, Serpent, and Five Dragon holy host of Master Zhenwu himself.?」:「He has taught me that there is no other way left to seek help — what am I to do?" The Duty God laughed and said, "Great Sage, set your mind at ease. This lowly spirit has thought of one place with fine troops — send for them and the demon can surely be subdued.Just now when the Great Sage went to Wudang, that was in the land of Nanzhanbuzhou. This other force is also in Nanzhanbuzhou, at Pin City on Xuyi Shan, which is present-day Sizhou. There resides the Great Sage Guoshi Wang Bodhisattva, whose divine powers are vast and mighty;under him he has a disciple named Prince Xiao Zhang, and moreover Four Great Divine Generals: in years past they once subdued the Mother of Waters herself.。」:「。」If you go now in person to invite him, he will come and lend his gracious aid, and it is certain you can capture the demon and rescue your master." Xingzhe said joyfully, "You go and guard my master meanwhile, and see that no harm comes to him — I shall go and make the request."

Xingzhe rose on his somersault cloud, left the demon's place behind, and flew straight for Xuyi Shan, arriving before a day had passed.Looking closely, it was truly a fine place:

The Great Sage, having gazed his fill, crossed the Huai River and entered Pin City, arriving outside the mountain gate of the Great Sage Chan Temple.殿He saw as well its halls and pavilions lofty and imposing, its long corridors brightly painted, and a towering, magnificent precious pagoda.Truly it was:

Xingzhe walked along, looking as he went, straight to beneath the second gate. The Guoshi Wang Bodhisattva had already sensed his coming, and came out the gate with Prince Xiao Zhang to welcome him.:「西After they had exchanged greetings, Xingzhe said, "I am escorting Tang Seng to the Western Heaven to fetch scriptures, and along the road there is a Xiaolei Yin Temple, where a demon named Huangmei has falsely posed as the Buddha. My master, unable to tell truth from falsehood, bowed down to him and was thereupon seized. He then trapped me under a set of golden cymbals, and it was only through the great fortune of Heaven sending down the star spirits that I was rescued. It was I who smashed the golden cymbals and did battle with him, whereupon he took out a cloth sack and bagged the heavenly spirits, the Jiedi, the Sangharama, and my master and fellow disciples, all of them.I then went to Wudang Shan to ask Xuantian Shangdi for aid, and he sent the Five Dragons and the Tortoise and Serpent to capture the demon, but they too were bagged in his sack and carried off. This disciple has nowhere else to turn, and so has come to beg the Bodhisattva to display his great might, and, using the very divine power by which he subdued the Mother of Waters and the wondrous means by which he saves the living, to go with this disciple and rescue my master from this calamity.。」:「Once the scriptures are obtained and brought back, to be handed down forever in China, they will spread the wisdom of our Buddha and flourish the paramita of prajna." The Guoshi Wang said, "This matter of yours today truly concerns the flourishing of our Buddhist teaching, and by rights I ought to go in person. It is only that we are now at the start of summer, just the season when the Huai waters rise and flood.I have newly taken in the Water Ape Great Sage, and that fellow grows wild whenever he meets water; I fear that once I am gone, he may seize the chance to run riot, with no divine power left to restrain him.。」I shall now send my young disciple, together with the Four Generals, to go with you and lend aid, to refine and subdue the demon."

Xingzhe expressed his thanks, and at once, together with the Four Generals and Prince Xiao Zhang, mounted the clouds again and returned to Xiaoxitian, straight to the Xiaolei Yin Temple.使Prince Xiao Zhang wielded a spear of white paper-mulberry wood, the Four Great Generals each brandished a kunwu blade, and together with Sun Dasheng they advanced to hurl challenges of battle.:「?」:「The little demons again went to report, and the Demon King once more led his horde of demons out with a great clamor, saying, "Monkey, whom have you gone and fetched this time?" Before he had finished speaking, Prince Xiao Zhang directed the Four Generals forward and shouted, "You rank fiend!?」:「?」:「。」:「?」:「Have you no flesh on your face, that you don't recognize us standing here?" The Demon King said, "What petty general is this from what quarter, daring to come and aid him?" The Prince said, "I am a disciple of the Guoshi Wang Bodhisattva of Sizhou, and I lead these Four Great Divine Generals under orders to capture you." The Demon King laughed and said, "What martial skill could a mere child like you have, that you dare come here so recklessly to make light of me?" The Prince said, "If you wish to know my skill, let me tell you:

:「Hearing this, the Demon King gave a faint, cold laugh and said, "So, Prince, you gave up your kingdom to follow the Guoshi Wang Bodhisattva — and what sort of art of eternal youth and undying life have you cultivated by it?You are fit only to catch water-demons in the Huai River — how is it you believed the wild and reckless words of Sun Xingzhe, and came all these mountains and rivers here to throw away your life??」Let's see whether you can indeed live forever and never grow old!"

Hearing this, young Zhang was filled with fury, and leveling his spear he thrust straight at the demon's face;the Four Great Generals pressed the attack together from all sides;使Sun Dasheng too came forward again, striking with his iron rod. What a fine monster — utterly unafraid, he wielded his short, pliant wolf-tooth club, parrying left and warding off right, thrusting straight ahead and sweeping across. What a fine battle this was:

Young Prince Zhang's spear of white paper-mulberry, and the Four Great Generals' kunwu blades, were all the more formidable.使Wukong also wielded his gold-banded rod, and together, with one heart, they surrounded and struck at the Demon King.Yet the Demon King's divine powers were truly great, and he feared not the slightest blow from either side. The wolf-tooth club was a treasure of the Buddha's own hall — swords hacked and spears swung, yet could do it no harm. All that could be heard was the fierce howling roar of the wild wind, and all that could be seen was murky evil vapor spreading vast and boundless. The one had a mind bent on showing off his worldly powers, the other was single-hearted in worshipping the Buddha and fetching the scriptures.Several times they charged and clashed, again and again wild and unrestrained.Clouds and mist were spewed forth, the three lights of sun, moon, and stars were blotted out, and each side, in furious wrath and rancor, showed itself far from good.Long did the supreme Dharma of the Three Vehicles strive, until all their many arts and skills were spent in bitter struggle.

All together they fought on for a long while, without either side gaining victory. The monster once again untied his sack.:「。」Xingzhe again cried out, "All of you, be careful!" But the Prince and the others had no idea what "be careful" meant. With a slick, slipping sound the demon flung out the sack, and the Four Great Generals together with the Prince were all bagged inside at once.Only Xingzhe, having foreknowledge, managed to flee. The Demon King, victorious, returned to the temple, and again had them bound with rope and sent down into the earthen cellar, sealed and locked fast — no more of that for now.

西:「Xingzhe rose on his somersault cloud into midair, and seeing the monster withdraw his troops and shut the gate, brought his auspicious light down and stood upon a slope of the western hill, gazing off in sorrow and weeping, "Oh, Master, I—"

西滿:「?」Just as the Great Sage was in the depths of his misery, he suddenly saw a cloud of colored light fall from the southwest, and a great rain of blossoms scattered over the whole mountain, while someone called out, "Wukong, do you know me?" Xingzhe hurried forward to look, and there was that person:

:「Seeing him, Xingzhe hastened to bow down, saying, "Buddha from the East, where are you bound?。」:「。」:「This disciple failed to withdraw in time to make way for you — ten thousand pardons, ten thousand pardons." The Buddha said, "I have come this time expressly on account of this demon of the Xiaolei Yin Temple." Xingzhe said, "I am deeply grateful for your lordship's great virtue and boundless kindness.May I ask, from what quarter is this demon, and what sort of evil spirit is he?And I do not know what sort of treasure that sack of his might be?。」:「I beg your lordship to instruct me." The Buddha said, "He is a yellow-browed page boy who used to strike the chime-stone before me.On the third day of the third month, I went to attend the Yuanshi Assembly, and left him behind to guard my palace; he made off with several of my treasures, and posing as the Buddha has become a demon.』。That sack is my Bag of Latter Heaven, commonly called the 'Human-Seed Bag.'。」:「。」:「That wolf-tooth club is the mallet used for striking the chime-stone." Hearing this, Xingzhe cried out loudly, "What a fine laughing monk you are! You let this page boy escape, and he goes about falsely proclaiming himself Buddha and doing old Monkey such harm — surely you bear some blame for lax household discipline!" Milefo said, "In the first place, it is my own carelessness, in letting a member of my household run off;and in the second place, your master and disciples have not yet exhausted your allotted trials, and so all these spirits have descended to the mortal world, that you might rightly undergo this ordeal.。」I have come now to take him back with me."

:「?」:「Xingzhe said, "This demon's divine powers are vast, and you, sir, carry no weapon at all — how will you subdue him?" Milefo laughed and said, "I shall set up a thatched hermitage at the foot of this mountain, and plant a field of melons and fruit here.1. You go and challenge him to battle, and when you fight, you may feign defeat but must not win — lure him to this melon patch of mine.2. All my other melons are unripe, but you shall transform into one big ripe melon.3. When he comes, he is sure to demand a melon to eat, and I will give you to him to eat.4. Once you are swallowed into his belly, you may do whatever you please to him inside.。」:「5. Then I will wait to seize his sack and put him inside it, and take him back with me." Sun Wukong said, "This plan is clever enough, but how will you recognize which ripe melon is the transformed one??」:「6. And how will he ever consent to follow me here?" Maitreya laughed and said, "I am the Honored One who governs the world, with wisdom-eyes of the highest clarity — how could I fail to recognize you?7. No matter what you transform into, I will know it at once.。」:「8. My only worry is that the fiend will not be willing to follow along — so let me teach you a spell." Sun Wukong said, "He will certainly try to bag me in his sack — how would he ever be willing to follow along??」:「。」9. What spell could bring that about?" Maitreya laughed and said, "Hold out your hand." Wukong at once stretched out his left hand and offered it over.10. Maitreya dipped the index finger of his right hand in the sacred water in his mouth, and wrote the character "Restrain" on Wukong's palm, telling him to clench his fist — when he faced the fiend and opened his hand, the fiend would then follow him.

11. Wukong clenched his fist and gladly accepted the instruction.:「。」12. With one hand wielding his iron rod, he went straight to outside the mountain gate and shouted loudly, "Monster, your Grandfather Sun has come again! Come out quickly and let's settle who is superior." The little demons hurried in to report.:「?」:「。」:「。」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「13. The demon king asked, "How many soldiers has he brought this time to challenge us?" The little demon said, "He has no soldiers at all, only himself alone." The demon king laughed and said, "That monkey's schemes are exhausted and his strength is spent — he has nowhere left to seek help, so he must surely be coming to throw away his life." He then dressed himself in neat array, took up his treasure, hefted his light and supple wolf-tooth club, and walked out the gate, calling, "Sun Wukong, this time there'll be no wriggling free." Wukong cursed, "Vile monster, why should I not be able to wriggle free?" The demon king said, "I see that your schemes are exhausted and your strength is spent, that you have nowhere to seek help, and yet you come alone to hold your ground — now that I have caught you, there will be no divine soldiers to come save you, which is why I say you'll not wriggle free." Wukong said, "This monster does not know whether he is alive or dead.。」 Stop your boasting and take a taste of my rod!" When the demon king saw him wielding the rod with only one hand, he could not help laughing, "Look at this monkey, showing off his tricks — how can he manage the rod with just one hand?" Wukong said, "My boy, you couldn't withstand me even using both hands;使。」 15. and if you don't use your sack, you could add three or five more of you and still not overcome this one hand of old Sun's." Hearing this, the demon king said, "Very well, very well — this time I won't use my treasure, but will fight you honestly, hand to hand, to decide who is the better." He then raised his wolf-tooth club and came forward to do battle.16. Sun Wukong faced him head-on, opened his fist, and wielded the rod with both hands.退使17. The fiend, being under the spell, never thought of retreating, and indeed did not resort to the sack, but only pressed forward with his club, pursuing.18. Wukong made a feint and, pretending defeat, fled.西19. The fiend chased him all the way to the foot of the western hillside.

20. Seeing a melon patch there, Wukong turned a somersault, burrowed inside, and at once transformed into one big ripe melon, both ripe and sweet.21. The fiend stopped and looked all around, unable to tell where Wukong had gone.:「?」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「。」22. He then chased on to the edge of the thatched hut and called out, "Who planted these melons?" Maitreya, transformed into an old melon farmer, came out of the thatched hut and answered, "Great King, this lowly one planted the melons." The demon king said, "Are there any ripe ones?" Maitreya said, "There are ripe ones." The demon king called, "Pick a ripe one for me — I want to quench my thirst." Maitreya then took the melon that was Wukong transformed and handed it over to the demon king with both hands.便23. The demon king, without examining it closely at all, took it in hand and opened his mouth to bite right into it.24. Taking this chance, Wukong rolled straight down into his throat, and without waiting to consider good or ill, at once set to work with hands and feet — clawing at his intestines, poking at his belly, turning somersaults, standing on his head — doing whatever he pleased inside him.25. The fiend, in such pain that his teeth chattered and his mouth twisted, tears streaming, rolled that whole patch of melon ground until it looked like a threshing floor.:「?」:「?」:「。」26. He could only cry out, "Enough, enough! Will someone save me, save me!" Maitreya then revealed his true form, and laughing merrily, called out, "Wretched beast, do you recognize me now?" When the fiend raised his head and saw him, he hastily fell to his knees, both hands rubbing his belly, knocking his head against the ground again and again, crying only, "Master, spare my life, spare my life, I dare not do it again." Maitreya stepped forward, seized hold of him, undid his hind-heaven sack, and snatched away his chime-striking mallet.:「。」27. He called out, "Sun Wukong, for my sake, spare his life."

28. Wukong, still bitterly resentful, kept punching with his left fist and kicking with his right foot, gouging and pounding away wildly inside him.29. The fiend, unable to bear the extreme pain, collapsed to the ground.:「。」:「。」30. Maitreya said again, "Wukong, he has suffered enough now — spare him." Only then did Wukong call out, "Open your mouth wide, and let old Sun come out." Although the fiend's belly was wracked with pain, his heart was not yet truly broken.:「。」便31. As the saying goes: "A man whose heart is not broken will not die; when the flower withers and the leaves fall, it is the root that has dried up." Hearing him call to open his mouth, the fiend at once bore the pain and opened his mouth wide.32. Only then did Wukong leap out and resume his true form; he swiftly raised his rod, meaning to strike again, but already the Buddha had bagged the fiend into his sack and slung it slantwise at his waist.:「33. Holding the chime mallet in hand, he cursed, "Wretched beast!?」:「。」:「。」 34. Where have you hidden the golden cymbals you stole?" The fiend, wanting only to be spared, whimpered and whined inside the hind-heaven sack, "The golden cymbals were smashed by Sun Wukong." The Buddha said, "If the cymbals are broken, return the gold to me." The fiend said, "The broken gold is piled up on the lotus throne in the hall."

:「。」35. The Buddha, carrying the sack and holding the chime mallet, laughed merrily and called out, "Wukong, come with me to find the gold and return it to me." Seeing such magic power, Wukong dared not disobey, and had no choice but to lead the Buddha up the mountain, back to the temple, to collect the broken gold.使36. He saw that the mountain gate was shut tight; the Buddha pointed with the mallet, and the gate opened.37. Entering to look, he found that the little demons had already learned that their old demon king had been captured, and each was gathering up his belongings, all wishing to flee in every direction to save their own lives.38. Wukong struck down whichever he saw — one at a time, two at a time — and killed off five or seven hundred little demons entirely.39. Each reverted to its true form — all of them were mountain spirits and tree goblins, beast fiends and bird demons.40. The Buddha gathered the gold together in one place, blew a breath of immortal breath, recited a spell, and at once it returned to its original form, becoming once again a pair of golden cymbals.41. He then took leave of Wukong, mounted an auspicious cloud, and headed straight back to the Realm of Ultimate Bliss.

42. Only then did the Great Sage untie Tang Sanzang, Bajie, and Sha Wujing.43. The idiot, having been hung up for several days, was so hungry he could bear it no longer, and without even thanking the Great Sage first, bent his back and ran to the kitchen to look for food.44. It turned out that the fiend had just prepared lunch, but because Wukong had come to challenge him to battle, he had not yet had the chance to eat it.45. When the idiot saw it, he ate up half a potful at once.46. Then he brought out two bowlfuls and told his master and fellow disciples to each eat two bowls.47. Only after that did he thank Wukong.48. When asked about the origin of the fiend, Wukong recounted in detail how he had first gone to invite the Patriarch, the Tortoise, and the Snake, then gone to invite the Great Sage to borrow the Prince, and finally how Maitreya had subdued the demon.:「?」:「。」:「。」49. Having heard this, Sanzang thanked him endlessly, and bowed in worship to all the various deities, saying, "Disciple, where were these divine beings imprisoned?" Wukong said, "Yesterday the Duty God of the Day told old Sun that they were all in the underground cellar." He called out, "Bajie, come with me to free them."

50. Having eaten his fill and regained his strength, the idiot roused his spirits, found his rake, and together with the Great Sage went to the rear, broke open the cellar, untied the ropes binding everyone, and invited them out from beneath the treasure tower.51. Sanzang put on his cassock and bowed in thanks to each of them in turn, facing upward.宿52. The Great Sage then escorted the five dragons and the two generals back to Wudang, escorted Young Prince Zhang and the four generals back to Bin City, then escorted the Twenty-Eight Constellations back to the celestial palace, and dismissed the Guardians and Protectors, each to return to his own realm.

53. Master and disciples then rested at ease for half a day.54. Having fed the white horse to its fill, they packed up their luggage, and set out on the road again at first light the next day.55. As they were leaving, they set a fire, and burned the treasure tower, the jeweled throne, the lofty pavilion, and the lecture hall all to ashes.56. And so it was that:

57. In the end, it is not known when they would finally reach Vulture Peak — listen to the explanation in the next chapter.

What it’s about

Wukong seeks help from celestial and Buddhist powers, but Yellow Brows' sack swallows each new company of rescuers. Even martial specialists who understand magical weapons cannot overcome an object whose proper master remains unknown. Wukong finally meets Maitreya, who explains that the demon is his runaway attendant and that the cymbals and sack were stolen from him. The apparent new Buddha of Little Thunderclap is thus literally a servant performing with borrowed sacred property.

Maitreya devises a capture based on appetite. He changes a field into a melon patch while Wukong becomes a ripe melon; when Yellow Brows bites, Wukong enters his stomach and torments him from within. The demon surrenders, Maitreya retrieves his treasures and takes the attendant away. Wukong frees Tripitaka, Bajie, Sha Wujing and the defeated gods, then destroys the counterfeit monastery before the pilgrims resume their journey toward the actual western destination.

When it was written 背景

Maitreya is the Buddha of the future, often represented in Chinese popular culture by the laughing, big-bellied Budai figure; his appearance makes Yellow Brows' imitation both audacious and comic. The solution depends on rightful ownership and intimate knowledge of the stolen objects, not an escalation of celestial force. It also repeats Wukong's tactic of entering an opponent's body, turning consumption against a creature driven by possession. Learners can organize the crowded chapter by separating failed helpers from the final owner: every unsuccessful force treats the sack as merely a stronger weapon, whereas Maitreya knows its history. The attendant is reclaimed rather than killed, restoring hierarchy after a parody of enlightenment.
