Monkey and Bajie Slay the Nine-Headed Demon and Recover the Treasure

063Chapter 63

:「。」:「使Now the king of Jisai and all his ministers, great and small, saw Sun the Great Sage and Bajie mount cloud and mist and drift away with the two little demons in their grasp. Every one of them bowed toward Heaven, saying, “The tales were indeed true; only today do we know that such divine immortals and living Buddhas truly exist.” When the two had vanished into the distance, they thanked Sanzang and Sha Seng, saying, “We, being but mortal flesh with mortal eyes, knew only that your eminent disciples possessed the strength to capture the demon thieves; how could we have known that they were lofty immortals who ride the clouds and mist?” Sanzang said, “This poor monk has not the slightest magic power. Throughout our journey I have depended greatly upon these three humble disciples.” Sha Seng said, “To tell Your Majesty the truth, our eldest brother is the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, now converted to the faith. He once caused havoc in the Celestial Palace and wielded a gold-banded staff against a hundred thousand heavenly soldiers, not one of whom could withstand him; he made even Taishang Laojun afraid and the Jade Emperor tremble with alarm. Our second brother is none other than Marshal Tianpeng restored to his true destiny; he once commanded the eighty thousand sailors of the River of Heaven.Only I, your disciple, possess no great powers; I am the former Curtain-Raising General, now received into the faith. We foolish brothers may be incapable in other affairs, but when it comes to capturing demons and binding monsters, seizing thieves and fugitives, subduing tigers and dragons, kicking Heaven about and stirring up wells, or even churning seas and overturning rivers, we know a thing or two.!」」,」。As for mounting cloud and mist, summoning rain and wind, shifting the Dipper and moving the stars, carrying mountains and driving on the moon—those are merely incidental arts, scarcely worth mentioning!” On hearing this, the king showed them tenfold greater reverence. He invited the Tang monk to take the seat of honor, constantly addressed him as “Venerable Buddha,” and called Sha Seng and the others “Bodhisattvas.”滿The whole court, civil and military, rejoiced, and all the people of the kingdom bowed in worship—but of this we shall say no more.

Sun the Great Sage and Bajie, meanwhile, rode a raging wind and carried the two little demons to the Green-Wave Pool at Tumbled-Rock Mountain, where they halted their cloud.:「!」:「Sun Wukong breathed a breath of immortal air upon his gold-banded staff and cried, “Change!” It became a monk’s knife. He cut the ear off the blackfish monster and the lower lip off the catfish spirit, then flung them into the water and shouted, “Hurry and report to the Dragon King Wansheng that Grandpa Sun, the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, is here! Tell him to bring out at once the treasure originally kept atop the Golden-Light Monastery pagoda in the kingdom of Jisai, and I shall spare the lives of his whole family.。」If so much as half a ‘no’ escapes his lips, I shall stir this pool utterly dry and have every member of his household, old and young, put to death.”

Glad to have escaped with their lives, the two little demons fled in pain, trailing their chains behind them, and plunged into the water.黿:「?」All the giant turtles, alligators, tortoises, soft-shelled turtles, prawns, crabs, and fish spirits were so frightened that they crowded around and asked, “Why are you two dragging ropes and wearing chains?” One covered his ear and shook his head and tail. The other clutched his mouth, stamped his feet, and beat his breast. Amid a great clamor they went straight into the Dragon King’s palace, crying, “Your Majesty, disaster has struck!” Dragon King Wansheng was drinking with his nine-headed son-in-law. Seeing the two arrive, he immediately set down his cup and asked what disaster had occurred.:「The two reported, “While out scouting last night, we were captured by the Tang monk and Sun Xingzhe as they swept the pagoda, and they bound us in iron chains.。」This morning we were taken before the king. Then Xingzhe and Zhu Bajie seized us; they cut off one of our ears and the other’s lip, threw us into the water, and ordered us to report that they demand the treasure from the pagoda’s summit.” They then related the whole affair in detail from beginning to end.:「婿。」:「When the old dragon heard that it was Sun Xingzhe, the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, his soul nearly left his body and his spirits scattered to the highest heavens. Trembling, he said to his son-in-law, “Worthy son, anyone else might be dealt with, but if it truly is he, matters bode ill.” The son-in-law laughed and said, “Honored Father, set your mind at ease.婿Since childhood your foolish son-in-law has learned some martial arts, and within the Four Seas I have encountered my share of heroes. Why should I fear him?。」Let me go out and fight him for three rounds; I guarantee the fellow will bow his head and submit, not daring even to look up.”

使:「What a fine monster! He sprang up, donned his armor, took up a weapon called a crescent-moon spade, strode from the palace, parted the waters, and called from the surface, “Who is this Great Sage Equal to Heaven?。」Come forward quickly and surrender your life!” Xingzhe and Bajie stood on the bank, observing how the monster was arrayed.

:「When no one answered, he called again, “Which one is the Great Sage Equal to Heaven?” Xingzhe pressed down his golden fillet, adjusted his iron staff, and said, “Old Sun is he.” The monster asked, “Where is your home? From what region do you come??」:「How did you reach the kingdom of Jisai and take it upon yourself to guard the king’s pagoda? How dare you capture my officers, injure them, and then come to my treasured mountain seeking battle?” Xingzhe cursed him: “You thieving monster! So you do not recognize your Grandpa Sun.Come forward and hear what I have to say:

:「Hearing this, the royal son-in-law gave a faint, cold laugh and said, “So you are merely a scripture-seeking monk, meddling needlessly and fabricating charges.?」:「I stole his treasure, while you seek the Buddha’s scriptures. What concern is it of yours, and why come fight me?” Xingzhe said, “You thieving monster are utterly unreasonable. It is true that I have received no favor from the king and have eaten none of his food or drunk his water, so I owe him no service.?」:「But you stole his treasure, defiled his pagoda, and for years caused the monks of Golden-Light Monastery to suffer unjustly. They and I belong to the same Buddhist fold; how could I not aid them and clear them of this wrong?” The son-in-law said, “If that is your position, I suppose you mean to wager your life in combat.:『。』。」As the saying goes, ‘In war there is no room for courtesy.’ I only fear that once we begin I shall be unable to hold back, and in an instant your life will be lost and your scripture pilgrimage ruined.”

:「Xingzhe flew into a rage and cursed, “You insolent thieving monster! What mighty skill have you that you dare boast so loudly?。」Come here and taste a blow from your lord!” The son-in-law remained perfectly calm. He raised his crescent-moon spade to meet the iron staff, and there atop Tumbled-Rock Mountain began a truly splendid battle:

Back and forth the two fought for more than thirty rounds, with neither gaining the upper hand.Zhu Bajie stood before the mountain, and when he saw their battle reach its most thrilling point, he raised his rake and struck at the demon from behind. The monster, however, had nine heads, with eyes facing every way, and saw him clearly.使As Bajie attacked from behind, he used the butt of his spade to parry the rake while its blade held off the iron staff. He endured another five or seven rounds, but could not withstand the weapons whirling at him from front and rear. He rolled aside, sprang into the air, and revealed his original form: a nine-headed bird. His appearance was exceedingly vicious; the very sight of his body was enough to frighten a man to death. This was how he was formed:

:「Zhu Bajie was alarmed at the sight and said, “Brother, in all my life I have never seen so hideous a creature.?」:「What foul blood and breath could have engendered such a beast?” Xingzhe said, “Rare indeed! Rare indeed!。」使便Let me chase after him and strike him down.” The Great Sage swiftly mounted an auspicious cloud, leapt into the air, and swung his iron staff at the monster’s head. The monster spread his enormous body, extended his wings, and flew obliquely away. With a whistling turn he swept back before the mountain; then another head emerged from his waist, opened a mouth like a basin of blood, and seized Bajie by the bristles in a single bite. Half dragging and half hauling him, the monster carried him down into the waters of Green-Wave Pool.:「?」 :「。」:「婿?」On reaching the Dragon Palace, he resumed his former appearance, threw Bajie to the ground, and called, “Where are my servants?” The mackerel, whitefish, carp, and mandarin-fish spirits, together with the tortoise, soft-shelled turtle, giant turtle, and alligator monsters, swarmed forward and answered, “Here!” The son-in-law ordered, “Tie this monk up over there, to avenge my scouting soldiers.” Shoving and shouting, the spirits carried Bajie inside. The old Dragon King came out joyfully to meet them and said, “Worthy son, you have performed a great feat! How did you capture him?” The son-in-law recounted all that had happened. The old dragon immediately ordered a banquet prepared to celebrate the victory—but of this we shall say no more.

:「Sun Xingzhe, meanwhile, saw the demon carry Bajie away and thought anxiously, “That fellow is formidable indeed. If I return to court and face Master, I fear the king will laugh at me.Yet if I challenge them to battle, I am alone, and besides, I am unaccustomed to fighting upon the water.I had better transform myself and go inside to see what the monster intends to do with that Idiot.便。」If an opportunity arises, I shall first steal him out, and then settle matters.” The Great Sage formed a spell with his fingers, shook himself, and changed into a crab. He plunged into the water and went straight to the ceremonial archway. He already knew this route well, having traveled it before when he impersonated the Bull Demon King and stole the Golden-Eyed Beast. He went directly beneath the palace buildings and scuttled sideways past them, where he again saw the old Dragon King, the nine-headed monster, and the entire family merrily drinking together.Xingzhe dared not approach them. He crawled beneath the eastern gallery and saw several prawn and crab spirits bustling about at play.:「?」:「西?」After listening to their conversation for a while, Xingzhe imitated their manner of speech and asked, “Has that long-snouted monk whom our lord son-in-law captured died yet?” The spirits answered, “He is not dead. Can you not hear him groaning, tied beneath the western gallery?”

Hearing this, Xingzhe quietly crawled over to the western gallery, where indeed the Idiot was tied to a pillar, groaning.:「?」:「Xingzhe approached and said, “Bajie, do you recognize me?” Hearing the voice, Bajie knew it was Xingzhe and said, “Brother, what are we to do?。」That fellow has captured me instead.” Xingzhe looked all around, saw no one, and used his pincers to snip through the ropes, telling him to flee.:「?」:「?」:「殿。」:「。」Once his hands were free, the Idiot said, “Brother, they have taken my weapon. What can I do?” Xingzhe asked, “Do you know where they put it?” Bajie replied, “The monster took it into the palace.” Xingzhe said, “Go and wait for me beneath the archway.” Glad to escape with his life, Bajie quietly slipped away.殿Xingzhe turned back and crawled up into the palace to look around.Beneath the left side gleamed a dense radiance: it came from Bajie’s rake. Using an invisibility spell, he stole the rake and carried it beneath the archway, where he called, “Bajie, catch your weapon!” Once the Idiot had his rake, he said, “Brother, you go ahead. Let old Zhu fight his way into the palace. If I win, I shall capture his whole family.。」If I lose and am driven back out, be ready on the bank of the pool to come to my aid.” Xingzhe was delighted and merely cautioned him to be careful.:「。」Bajie said, “I am not afraid of him. I have some small skill in the water.” Xingzhe left him there and returned to the surface—but of this we shall say no more.

Bajie tightened his black robe, gripped the rake in both hands, gave a great shout, and fought his way inside. All the water creatures, great and small, fled in panic and rushed into the palace, crying, “Disaster! The long-snouted monk has broken his bonds and is fighting his way in!” The old dragon, the nine-headed monster, and the whole family were caught unprepared; they leapt up and scattered into hiding.殿Caring nothing for life or death, the Idiot stormed into the palace, swinging his rake all the way. He smashed the doors, broke the tables and chairs, and shattered all the vessels and furnishings used for their drinking feast. There is a poem as evidence. The poem says:

In this affray Bajie smashed the tortoiseshell screens to powder and dashed the coral trees to ruin.

:「The nine-headed monster hid the princess safely in the inner chambers, hastily seized his crescent-moon spade, and rushed to the front palace, shouting, “You wretched, clumsy swine!?」:「How dare you act so wickedly and terrify my family?” Bajie cursed him: “You thieving monster! How dare you capture me and bring me here? This disturbance is none of my doing; you invited me into your home to smash it.Quickly return the treasure to me, so that I may report to the king and end this affair.。」Otherwise, I shall certainly spare no life in your entire family.” The monster refused to show mercy. Clenching his teeth, he engaged Bajie in combat. The old dragon finally recovered his composure and led his dragon sons and grandsons forward, each bearing spear or sword, to attack together.便Seeing that matters were going badly, Bajie made a feint with his rake, turned, and fled. The old dragon led the others in pursuit. In a moment they burst from the water and all churned about upon the surface of the pool.

:「!」Sun Xingzhe was waiting on the bank when he suddenly saw them chase Bajie out of the water. Half mounting the clouds, he drew his iron staff and shouted, “Do not flee!” With a single blow he smashed the old dragon’s head to pulp.Pitiful indeed: blood splashed through the pool and reddened its waters, while the corpse floated upon the waves with its shattered scales. The dragon sons and grandsons were so frightened that each fled for his life. The nine-headed son-in-law recovered the dragon’s corpse and returned to the palace.

Xingzhe and Bajie did not pursue them but went back onto the bank and recounted what had happened.:「Bajie said, “That fellow’s spirit has been broken. When I smashed my way inside with the rake, I beat them into utter rout and scared their souls from their bodies.I was fighting the son-in-law when the old Dragon King came after me, and fortunately you killed him. Those fellows will surely hold funeral rites and put on mourning when they return; they will certainly refuse to come out again.?」:「Now it is getting late as well—what are we to do?” Xingzhe said, “What does nightfall matter? Seize this opportunity and go down again to attack them.。」We must recover the treasure before we can return to court.” The Idiot had lost heart and listlessly made excuses.:「。」Xingzhe pressed him, saying, “Brother, do not hesitate. Lure them out as you did just now, and I shall strike them down.”

As the two were discussing the matter, they heard a raging wind rolling near and saw a dark, dismal mist pass suddenly from east to south.鹿Looking carefully, Xingzhe saw Erlang the Illustrious Sage leading the six brothers of Meishan. With hawks and hounds beside them, they carried foxes and hares on poles and bore up musk deer and common deer; each had a curved bow at his waist and a sharp blade in his hand as they came bounding through the wind and mist.:「Xingzhe said, “Bajie, those are my seven sage brothers. We should invite them to stay and help us in battle.。」:「。」:「If we succeed, it will be a splendid opportunity.” Bajie said, “Since they are your brothers, we certainly ought to invite them.” Xingzhe said, “But among them is my elder brother the Illustrious Sage. He once subdued me, so I feel awkward appearing before him.:『。』Go and stop their clouds, and call, ‘True Lord, please halt a moment. The Great Sage Equal to Heaven is here to pay his respects.’ If he hears that it is I, he will certainly stop.。」Once he has settled down, I can properly meet him.”

:「。」:「?」:「。」:「。」:「。」The Idiot swiftly mounted a cloud, went up the mountain, and blocked their way, calling loudly, “True Lord, please halt your honored procession! The Great Sage Equal to Heaven requests an audience.” On hearing this, the lord immediately gave the order and halted the six brothers. After greeting Bajie, he asked, “Where is the Great Sage Equal to Heaven?” Bajie replied, “He is below the mountain, awaiting your summons.” Erlang said, “Brothers, hurry and invite him here.” The six brothers—Kang, Zhang, Yao, Li, Guo, and Zhi—each came out from the company and called, “Brother Sun Wukong, our elder brother invites you.” Xingzhe came forward, saluted them all, and accompanied them up the mountain.:「。」:「Lord Erlang came forward to welcome him, took him by the hand, and supported him as they exchanged greetings. He said, “Great Sage, you have escaped your great tribulation and received the Buddhist precepts. Soon your merit will be complete and you will ascend the lotus throne. Congratulations, congratulations!” Xingzhe replied, “I am unworthy.Long ago I received your immense kindness, yet have never repaid even the smallest part of it.西Though I escaped calamity and journeyed west, I do not yet know how my merit and conduct will be judged. Now, while passing through the kingdom of Jisai, we undertook to relieve the monks’ suffering and came here to capture demons and recover a treasure.By chance I saw Your Elder Lordship’s procession and boldly asked you to remain and lend us your aid.?」:「May I ask where Your Elder Lordship has come from, and whether you would favor me in this?” Erlang laughed and said, “Having leisure and no pressing duties, I went hunting with my brothers and am now returning. That the Great Sage has graciously asked us to remain shows the affection of an old friend, for which I am deeply grateful. If you command us to join forces in subduing a demon, how could we disobey??」:「But what manner of monster occupies this place?” The six sages said, “Elder Brother, have you forgotten?。」:「?」:「This is Tumbled-Rock Mountain, and beneath it lies Green-Wave Pool, where the Dragon King Wansheng has his palace.” Erlang said in surprise, “The old Dragon Wansheng never used to cause trouble. How did he dare steal the pagoda’s treasure?” Xingzhe replied, “He recently took a son-in-law, a nine-headed bird spirit. The father- and son-in-law turned thieves. They sent a rain of blood over the kingdom of Jisai and stole the Buddha’s śarīra treasure from the summit of the Golden-Light Monastery pagoda. The king did not understand the cause and cruelly arrested and tortured the monks. My master, in his compassion, swept the pagoda last night, and there I captured two little demons whom the dragon had sent to scout. This morning we escorted them to court, where they confessed everything truthfully. The king then asked my master to subdue the demons, and Master ordered us to come here.In our first battle the nine-headed monster extended another head from his waist, seized Bajie in its beak, and carried him away.I transformed myself, went beneath the water, and freed Bajie. We have just fought another battle, during which I killed the old dragon; those fellows have taken away his corpse and gone into mourning.。」 ?」The two of us were discussing how to challenge them again when Your Elder Lordship’s splendid procession arrived, and so I have presumed to trouble you.” Erlang said, “Since the old dragon has been wounded and killed, this is precisely the moment to attack, before those fellows can prepare themselves. Why not destroy their entire nest?” Bajie said, “That may be so, but what of the gathering night?” Erlang replied, “Military teaching says, ‘A campaign waits for no appointed hour.’ Why fear the night?”

:「Kang, Yao, Guo, and Zhi said, “Elder Brother, there is no need to hurry. That fellow’s family is here and surely has nowhere to go.Second Brother Sun is also an honored guest, and Zhu Ganglie has returned to the true path. We have wine and food with our company; let the servants kindle a fire and spread the feast here. First, we may congratulate these two, and second, renew our friendship.?」:「。」Let us enjoy our gathering tonight. It will not be too late to challenge the demons at dawn.” Erlang was delighted and said, “Worthy brothers, your words are most reasonable.” He then ordered his lesser officers to make preparations.:「Xingzhe said, “Your generous kindness, gentlemen, is not something I dare stubbornly refuse.便。」:「。」“But since becoming monks, we have observed a vegetarian fast, and fear it may be awkward to provide both meat and meatless fare.” Erlang said, “We have vegetarian fruits, and the wine too is meatless.” Beneath the light of the stars and moon, the brothers made the sky their canopy and the earth their mat, raising their cups and recounting old times.

Indeed, lonely watches are long, but nights of pleasure short. Before they knew it, the eastern sky was turning pale.:「。」:「。」:「。」使After several cups of wine, Bajie was in high spirits and said, “Day will soon break; let old Zhu go down into the water and challenge him.” Erlang said, “Take care, Marshal. You need only lure him out, and we brothers can strike.” Bajie laughed. “I understand, I understand.” See how he gathered up his robes, secured his rake, performed the water-parting spell, and leapt straight down to the ornamental archway.殿He raised a battle cry and fought his way into the palace. At that moment, the dragon prince, dressed in mourning hemp, was weeping over the Dragon King’s corpse;the dragon grandson and the royal son-in-law were in the rear, making ready the coffin.窿Bajie advanced upon them with curses; as his hand rose, the heavy head of his rake came down squarely upon the dragon prince’s skull, punching nine holes through his head with a single blow.:「。」Terrified, the old dragon dame and all the others fled wildly inside, crying, “That long-snouted monk has killed another of my sons!”

When the royal son-in-law heard this, he immediately wielded his crescent-bladed spade and led the dragon grandson out to attack.退Bajie raised his rake to meet them, fighting as he retreated until he leapt out of the water. On the bank, the Great Sage Equal to Heaven and the seven brothers surged forward together, thrusting wildly with spears and blades until they had hacked the dragon grandson into several slabs of flesh.Seeing that matters were going badly, the royal son-in-law rolled over before the mountain and resumed his true form, spreading his wings and wheeling aloft.滿Erlang at once took up his golden bow, fitted a silver pellet, drew the bow to its full extent, and shot upward. The monster abruptly folded his wings and swooped close, intending to bite Erlang.Just as one of his heads stretched out halfway, the fine hound sprang up with a bark and, in a single bite, tore the blood-drenched head clean off.The monster fled for his life in agony, heading straight for the North Sea. Bajie was about to pursue him, but Xingzhe stopped him, saying, “Do not chase him; as the saying goes, ‘Never pursue a desperate foe.’The fine hound has bitten off one of his heads, so he is far more likely to die than live.。」:「。」Wait while I assume his appearance; you part the waters and chase me inside, and I shall find the princess and trick her into giving up the treasures.” Erlang and the Six Sages said, “So be it if we do not pursue him; but if one of his kind remains alive in the world, he will surely bring harm upon later generations.” Even today there survives a blood-dripping nine-headed insect, descended from his stock.

Bajie did as he was told and parted the waters.Xingzhe transformed himself into the monster and went ahead, while Bajie followed behind, shouting and bellowing.:「?」:「As the chase gradually reached the Dragon Palace, the Wansheng Princess appeared and asked, “Royal Consort, why are you in such a panic?” Xingzhe replied, “Bajie has gained the upper hand and chased me in here; I fear I cannot defeat him.。」 :「Quickly hide the treasures somewhere safe.” Unable in her haste to tell true from false, the princess immediately fetched a box of solid gold from the rear hall and handed it to Xingzhe, saying, “This is the Buddha-treasure.” Then she took out a white jade box and handed that to him as well, saying, “This contains the nine-leaf lingzhi.Take these treasures away and hide them, while I fight Zhu Bajie for two or three rounds and hold him off.。」:「?」便Once you have put the treasures safely away, come out again and join me in fighting him.” Xingzhe tucked the two boxes against his body, wiped a hand across his face, and resumed his true appearance. “Princess,” he said, “look closely: am I your royal consort?” The princess panicked and tried to snatch the boxes back. But Bajie rushed forward and struck her in the back with his rake, felling her to the ground.

:「。」There was also the old dragon dame, who turned to flee; Bajie seized her and had just raised his rake to strike when Xingzhe said, “Hold! Do not kill her. Keep one alive so that we may take her back to the kingdom as proof of our achievement.” They then hauled the dragon dame out of the water.

:「。」:「?」:「。」Xingzhe followed, carrying the two boxes onto the bank, and said to Erlang, “Thanks to your mighty power, elder brother, we have recovered the treasures and swept the demons clean away.” Erlang replied, “First, it was because the king’s great fortune rivals Heaven; second, because you worthy brothers possess immeasurable divine powers. What merit can I claim?” All the brothers said, “Since Second Brother Sun has accomplished his task, we shall take our leave here.” Xingzhe thanked them profusely and wished them to stay and meet the king. But none of the gentlemen would consent, and so Erlang led his company back to Guankou.

Xingzhe carried the boxes while Bajie dragged the dragon dame, traveling half on cloud and half in mist, and in a moment they reached the capital. It turned out that all the monks released from the Jinguang Monastery had come outside the city to welcome them. When they suddenly saw the pair’s cloud and mist come to rest, they approached, kowtowed in reverence, and escorted them into the city.殿The king and the Tang Monk were then conversing in the throne hall.:「。」殿One of the monks who had gone ahead plucked up his courage, entered the palace gate, and reported, “Your Majesty, Lords Sun and Zhu have returned, having captured the criminals and recovered the treasures.” Hearing this, the king hurried down from the hall and, together with the Tang Monk and Sha Monk, went out to meet them, thanking them endlessly for their miraculous achievement; he then ordered a banquet prepared in gratitude.:「。」:「?」Sanzang said, “There is no need to bestow wine just yet. Let my disciples first restore the treasures to the pagoda, and then we may feast.” Sanzang then asked Xingzhe, “You left the kingdom yesterday; why have you only returned today?” Xingzhe gave a detailed account of their battle with the royal son-in-law, the slaying of the Dragon King, their meeting with the True Lord, their defeat of the monster, and his own transformation to trick the princess out of the treasures.Sanzang, the king, and all the civil and military officials, high and low, were overjoyed.

:「?」:「?」:「。」:「。」 The king then asked, “Can the dragon dame speak human language?” Bajie replied, “She is the Dragon King’s wife and has borne many dragon sons and grandsons; how could she not know human speech?” The king said, “Since you know human speech, quickly tell us the whole story of your theft.” The dragon dame said, “I knew nothing at all of the theft of the Buddha-treasure. It was all the doing of my husband, that dragon ghost, and our royal son-in-law, the Nine-Headed Insect. Knowing that the radiance above your pagoda came from a Buddhist śarīra, they took advantage of the rain of blood three years ago to steal it.” The king asked again, “And how was the lingzhi stolen?” The dragon dame replied, “My daughter, the Wansheng Princess, secretly entered the Great Luo Heaven and stole the Queen Mother’s nine-leaf lingzhi from before the Lingxiao Palace.Nourished by the immortal essence of this herb, the śarīra will remain incorrupt for a thousand years and shine for ten thousand. If it is swept once beneath the ground or across a field, ten thousand rays of rosy light and a thousand streams of auspicious vapor will appear. :「。」:「Now that you have seized them back, you have left my husband dead and my sons cut off, my son-in-law slain and my daughter lost; I beg you a thousand times to spare my life.” Bajie said, “We certainly will not spare you.” Xingzhe said, “The whole household should not be punished for one family’s crimes. :「I shall spare you, but only on condition that you watch over the pagoda for me forever.” The dragon dame said, “A wretched life is better than a good death.。」Only spare my life, and you may command me to do anything.” Xingzhe ordered that an iron chain be brought.穿An officer in attendance immediately fetched an iron chain and threaded it through the dragon dame’s shoulder blades.:「。」He told Sha Monk, “Ask the king to come and watch us restore the treasures to the pagoda.”

The king immediately ordered his carriage prepared, then left the court hand in hand with Sanzang, accompanied by the many civil and military officials, and proceeded to the Jinguang Monastery.Xingzhe climbed the pagoda and placed the śarīra inside the precious vase at the summit of its thirteenth story, then chained the dragon dame to the central pillar. He recited an incantation and summoned the local Earth God, the City God, and the guardian deities of the monastery, commanding them to bring the dragon dame one meal every three days to keep her alive;at the slightest failure, they would be beheaded at once. The gods accepted the command unseen.Xingzhe then used the lingzhi to sweep every one of the pagoda’s thirteen stories before placing it inside the vase to nourish the śarīra.Thus the old was restored as new: ten thousand rays of rosy light and a thousand streams of auspicious vapor appeared once more, visible in every direction and beheld by all four kingdoms.:「!」When they came down through the pagoda gate, the king thanked them, saying, “Had the venerable Buddha and his three Bodhisattvas not come here, how could this affair ever have been brought to light?”

:「,『Xingzhe said, “Your Majesty, the name ‘Golden Radiance’ is inauspicious, for it speaks of things that do not remain: gold is something that passes from hand to hand, and light is an essence that flashes and fades.。」」。Since this poor monk has taken such pains on your behalf, rename the monastery ‘Dragon-Subduing Monastery,’ that it may endure forever.” The king immediately ordered the name changed and a new plaque hung, inscribed: “Imperially Founded Dragon-Subduing Monastery for the Protection of the Realm.”Meanwhile, an imperial banquet was prepared;and meanwhile, painters were summoned to make portraits of the four pilgrims, with their names inscribed upon the Five-Phoenix Tower. The king arrayed his imperial procession to see the Tang Monk and his disciples on their way, and bestowed gold and jade upon them in recompense. But master and disciples firmly declined and would not accept so much as a single penny. And truly it was this:

But what lay ahead upon their journey is yet unknown; listen to the explanation in the next chapter.

What it’s about

Wukong and Bajie descend to Emerald-Wave Lake and challenge the dragon family. Bajie kills the dragon son-in-law's allies and draws the Nine-Headed Insect into battle, but the creature's many heads and birdlike true form make him hard to contain. Erlang Shen happens to pass with his sworn brothers and hunting hounds; remembering his earlier contests with Wukong, he nevertheless joins the fight. His hound bites off one of the monster's heads, and the wounded enemy flees rather than being conclusively killed.

The victors recover the Buddha relic and the Queen Mother's fungus from the dragon palace. Back at the capital, Wukong uses the fungus to restore the relic's brilliance, the imprisoned monks are formally exonerated and the pagoda receives a new name honoring the defeat of evil. The pilgrims decline rewards beyond supplies and amended travel papers. A theft that had made holiness appear extinguished ends with both sacred objects returned and the human victims of a false accusation released.

When it was written 背景

Erlang's assistance reverses the relationship established during Wukong's rebellion, when the same two shape-changing warriors fought as enemies. Their cooperation shows how the pilgrimage has repositioned Wukong within the cosmic order without erasing his old networks or martial character. The Nine-Headed Insect's escape also resists the tidy assumption that every antagonist must die. For learners, the action becomes clearer if separated into three goals: force the lake court to respond, retrieve the relic and fungus, and restore the monks' public standing. Cleaning and relighting the pagoda frame combat with repair, emphasizing that victory consists not merely in beating a creature but in correcting the consequences of misplaced royal suspicion.
