The Contest of Magic Exposes the Three Animal-Spirits
第046回Chapter 46
The story goes that when the king saw that Sun Wukong possessed the power to summon dragons and command spirits, he stamped the travel rescript with the treasure seal and was about to hand it to Tang Seng, granting him passage west. The three Daoist priests, alarmed, prostrated themselves before the throne in the golden hall to submit a memorial. The emperor at once rose from his dragon throne and hastily reached out with his own hand to raise them up, saying, "Why does the National Preceptor perform such a great obeisance today?" The Daoist said, "Your Majesty, we came here to uphold the altars of state and protect the country and its people, laboring bitterly for twenty years — yet today this monk used magic power to snatch away the rain and cast it aside, ruining our reputation.陛下以一場之雨,就恕殺人之罪,可不輕了我等也?"Your Majesty, on the strength of a single rainfall you would pardon the crime of manslaughter — is that not making light of us? We beg Your Majesty to withhold his travel rescript a while longer and let my brothers contend with him once more in a wager, to see how it turns out." The king, thoroughly muddled, swayed east when told east and west when told west, and indeed took back the rescript, saying, "National Preceptor, how will you contend with him?" Immortal Huli said, "I will wager with him at sitting in meditation." The king said, "There, National Preceptor, you are mistaken. That monk comes from a Chan background and surely already understands the workings of meditation before he dared receive the imperial edict to seek scriptures — how can you wager with him on that?" The Immortal said, "This sitting meditation of mine is no ordinary kind; it has a special name — it is called 'Ascending the Cloud Ladder to Manifest Sagehood.'" The king said, "What is meant by 'Ascending the Cloud Ladder to Manifest Sagehood'?" The Immortal said, "We need a hundred tables. Fifty tables will form one meditation platform, stacked one upon another, and one may not climb up by hand nor mount by ladder or stool — each rides up on a cloud of his own and sits atop the platform, agreeing to remain motionless for a set number of hours."
The king saw that this posed some difficulty, and so sent word to ask, "Monk, my National Preceptor wishes to wager with you at 'Ascending the Cloud Ladder to Manifest Sagehood' in sitting meditation — can anyone among you do this?" Hearing this, Xingzhe fell silent and did not answer. Bajie said, "Elder brother, why do you say nothing?" Xingzhe said, "Brother, to tell you the truth—若是踢天弄井、攪海翻江、擔山趕月、換斗移星諸般巧事,我都幹得;if it's kicking heaven or stirring up wells, churning the sea or overturning rivers, carrying mountains or chasing the moon, swapping the Dipper or shifting the stars, and all such clever feats, I can do every one of them;就是砍頭剁腦、剖腹剜心、異樣騰那卻也不怕;even having my head chopped off, my brains hacked out, my belly split open, or my heart gouged out, and all manner of strange contortions, I fear none of it;但說坐禪,我就輸了。but when it comes to sitting in meditation, I would lose. Where would I ever get the patience to sit still? Even if you chained me to an iron pillar, I would still scramble up and down — there's no hope of my sitting still." Sanzang suddenly spoke up, "I can sit in meditation." Xingzhe said joyfully, "Excellent, excellent. How long can you sit?" Sanzang said, "In my youth I met itinerant Chan monks who preached the Way, and as for stabilizing one's nature and preserving the spirit at the very root of life, within the pass between life and death, I once sat for two or three years." Xingzhe said, "Master, if you sit for two or three years, we might as well give up fetching the scriptures. At most, in no more than two or three hours, you'll come down again." Sanzang said, "Disciple, ah, but I cannot get up there." Xingzhe said, "You step forward and answer him — I will send you up."
The elder indeed pressed his palms together at his chest and said, "This poor monk can sit in meditation." The king ordered that word be passed to set up the meditation platforms. The kingdom had the strength to move mountains, and in less than half an hour, two platforms were erected to the left and right of the golden hall.
Immortal Huli came down from the hall, stood in the middle of the steps, gave a leap, mounted a cloud like a mat, and went straight up to sit on the western platform. Xingzhe plucked one hair and transformed it into a false likeness of himself, which stood below beside Bajie and Sha Seng;他卻作五色祥雲,把唐僧撮起空中,徑至東邊臺上坐下;he himself formed a five-colored auspicious cloud, scooped Tang Seng up into the air, and went straight to sit on the eastern platform;他又斂祥光,變作一個蟭蟟蟲,飛在八戒耳朵邊道:「兄弟,仔細看著師父,再莫與老孫替身說話。」 then he gathered in the auspicious light and turned himself into a tiny gnat, flying to Bajie's ear and saying, "Brother, watch our master closely, and don't go talking to old Monkey's stand-in again." The idiot laughed, "Understood, understood."
Meanwhile Immortal Luli, seated on an embroidered stool, watched for a long while; when the two of them on the high platforms remained evenly matched, this Daoist decided to lend his elder brother a hand: he plucked a single short hair from the back of his head, rolled it into a little ball, and flicked it upward, straight to the top of Tang Seng's head, where it turned into a large stinkbug and bit the elder. At first the elder felt an itch, and then he felt pain. Now, one who sits in meditation is not allowed to move his hands — to move a hand counts as losing. After a while the pain became unbearable, and he drew in his head and rubbed at the itch with the hem of his robe. Bajie said, "This is bad — the master's fit of epilepsy has come on." Sha Seng said, "No, it's a wind-affliction of the head." Xingzhe, hearing this, said, "My master is a man of utter sincerity; if he said he could sit in meditation, then he surely can;說不會,只是不會。if he said he could not, then he simply could not. How could a gentleman speak falsely? The two of you say nothing more — let me go up and take a look."
Good Xingzhe — with a buzz he flew up to the top of Tang Seng's head, and there he saw a stinkbug the size of a bean biting his master; hastily he pinched it off with his hand and scratched and rubbed his master's head for him. The elder, now free of pain and itch, sat upright atop the platform. Xingzhe thought to himself secretly, "A monk's head is shaved bare — not even a louse could settle on it, so how did this stinkbug get here? It must be some trick the Daoist worked to harm my master. Ha, it would be a shame to let the match end without a clear winner or loser — let old Monkey go give him a taste of the same!" This Xingzhe flew up, dropped down from the beast-head ornament on the golden hall, shook himself, and turned into a centipede seven inches long, going straight to bite the Daoist in the hollow of his nose. The Daoist could not hold his seat, turned a somersault, and tumbled down, nearly losing his life; fortunately the many officials, high and low, rushed to save him. The king, greatly alarmed, at once ordered the Grand Tutor in attendance to take him to the Wenhua Hall to be washed and groomed. Xingzhe, still riding his auspicious cloud, carried his master down before the steps — by now the elder had won the match.
The king wished only to let them pass. Immortal Luli again submitted, "Your Majesty, my elder brother has always suffered a hidden wind ailment; because he went up to such a height and was struck by the heavenly wind, his old illness flared up, and that is why the monk seemed to win. Let him be kept here a while longer, and let me wager with him at 'Guessing Objects Through a Partition.'" The king said, "What is meant by 'Guessing Objects Through a Partition'?" Luli said, "This poor Daoist has the art of knowing objects through a partition — let us see whether that monk is capable of it. If he guesses correctly against me, let him go free;猜不著,憑陛下問擬罪名,雪我昆仲之恨,不污了二十年保國之恩也。」 if he cannot guess it, then let Your Majesty judge and sentence him as you see fit, to wash away the grievance of my brothers, so that our twenty years of service in protecting the realm shall not be sullied." The king, utterly muddled indeed, followed this slanderous counsel and at once issued an order: a vermillion lacquered cabinet was to be carried by the palace attendants into the hall. He had the Empress place a treasure inside it. In a moment it was carried out and set before the white jade steps, and the monk and the Daoist were told, "The two of you shall each wager your powers, guessing what treasure lies within this cabinet."
Sanzang said, "Disciple, how am I to know what is inside the cabinet?" Xingzhe gathered in his auspicious light and again turned into a gnat, fastening himself atop Tang Seng's head, and said, "Master, set your mind at ease — let me go and take a look." Good Great Sage — he flew lightly onto the cabinet, crawled down beneath its legs, and found a crack between the boards. He wriggled his way in, and there he saw a red-lacquered vermillion tray, on which lay a set of palace robes — a jacket embroidered with mountains, rivers, and the altars of state, and a skirt patterned with the earth and its geography. He picked it up with his hands, shook it into disarray, bit through the tip of his tongue, and spat out a mouthful of blood, crying, "Change!" — and it at once turned into a tattered, dripping, cracked bell. Before leaving he also sprayed a puddle of urine over it. Then he crawled back out through the crack in the boards and flew to perch on Tang Seng's ear, saying, "Master, just guess it's a tattered, dripping, cracked bell." Sanzang said, "They asked us to guess a treasure — what sort of treasure is a 'dripping cracked bell'?" Xingzhe said, "Never mind that — just guess it and it will be right."
Tang Seng stepped forward, about to make his guess, when Immortal Luli said, "Let me guess first — inside the cabinet is a jacket embroidered with mountains, rivers, and the altars of state, and a skirt patterned with the earth and its geography." Tang Seng said, "No, no — inside the cabinet is a tattered, dripping, cracked bell." The king said, "This monk is insolent! How dare he mock our kingdom as having no treasures, guessing something like a 'dripping cracked bell.'" He ordered, "Seize him!" The two ranks of guard officers were about to lay hands on him. Tang Seng, alarmed, pressed his palms together and cried aloud, "Your Majesty, pray pardon this poor monk a moment longer, and let the cabinet be opened to see. If it truly is a treasure, this poor monk will accept the punishment;如不是寶,卻不屈了貧僧也?」 but if it is not a treasure, would that not be a great injustice done to this poor monk?" The king ordered the cabinet opened to look. The attending official at once opened it, lifted out the vermillion tray to look, and indeed it was a tattered, dripping, cracked bell. The king, enraged, said, "Who put this thing inside?" From behind the dragon throne the Third Consort Empress stepped forward and said, "My lord, it was I, your consort, who placed inside with my own hands the jacket embroidered with mountains, rivers, and the altars of state, and the skirt patterned with the earth and its geography — how it came to change into this thing, I do not know." The king said, "My royal consort, please withdraw — I understand it myself. The things used within the palace are nothing but silks and damasks and gauzes — where would there be any such 'dripping cracked bell'?" He ordered, "Carry the cabinet up again, and let me myself hide a treasure inside, to test him once more." The emperor then went back to the rear palace, and from the immortal peach tree in the imperial garden he picked a great peach, as large as a bowl, and placed it inside the cabinet, then had it carried out again for the guessing.
Tang Seng said, "Disciple, ah, they're going to guess again." Xingzhe said, "Set your mind at ease — let me go take another look." Again with a buzz he flew off, once more crawling in through the crack in the boards, and saw it was a peach — which suited him perfectly. He then resumed his true form, sat inside the cabinet, and devoured the peach in one go until it was utterly clean, gnawing even the hollows on both sides down to nothing, and set the pit back inside. He then turned once more into a gnat, flew out, and fastened himself on Tang Seng's ear, saying, "Master, just guess it's a bare peach pit." The elder said, "Disciple, ah, don't play tricks on me. Earlier it was only because I spoke too hastily that I nearly went to the executioner. This time we must guess a real treasure for it to go well. What sort of treasure is a peach pit?" Xingzhe said, "Don't be afraid — just be sure to beat him, that's all."
Just as Sanzang was about to speak, he heard Immortal Yangli say, "This poor Daoist will guess first — it is an immortal peach." Sanzang guessed, "It is not a peach — it is a bare, fleshless peach pit." The king shouted, "It was an immortal peach that I myself placed inside — how could it be a pit? The Third National Preceptor has guessed correctly." Sanzang said, "Your Majesty, simply open it and look." The attending official again carried it up and opened it, lifting out the vermillion tray, and indeed it was a pit, with neither skin nor flesh remaining. Seeing this, the king's heart was shaken, and he said, "National Preceptors, stop contending with him — let him go. The immortal peach I hid with my own hands has become nothing but a pit — who could have eaten it? It must be that spirits and ghosts are secretly aiding him." Hearing this, Bajie said to Sha Seng with a faint, cold smile, "Little do they know he's an old hand at eating peaches."
In the midst of this conversation, Immortal Huli, now washed and groomed, came from the Wenhua Hall and walked up into the hall, saying, "Your Majesty, this monk has the arts of spiriting things away and substituting objects. Carry the cabinet up again, and let me break his sorcery, and guess with him once more." The king said, "National Preceptor, what more do you wish to guess?" Huli said, "Sorcery can only substitute objects — it cannot substitute a living person. 這小童果藏在櫃裡,掩上櫃蓋,擡將下去,教:「那和尚再猜,這三番是甚寶貝?」Let this young Daoist boy be hidden inside — that will surely keep him from making any substitution." So this young boy was indeed hidden inside the cabinet, the lid was closed over him, and it was carried down, with the order, "Let the monk guess again — what treasure is this third round?"
Sanzang said, "Here it comes again!" Xingzhe said, "Let me go take another look." With a buzz he flew off again, wriggled inside, and saw it was a young boy. Good Great Sage — he had resourcefulness indeed; truly, such shape-shifting skill is rare under heaven, and such cleverness as his is seldom found in this world. He shook himself and changed into the likeness of an old Daoist priest, entered the cabinet, and called out, "Disciple." The boy said, "Master, where have you come from?" Xingzhe said, "I came by a technique of escape." The boy said, "What instructions have you come to give me?" Xingzhe said, "That monk saw you go into the cabinet — if he guesses it's a Daoist boy, then we shall lose again, shan't we? So I have come especially to talk it over with you: let us shave your head, and we'll have him guess 'monk' instead." The boy said, "Whatever the master decides, so long as we beat him;若是再輸與他,不但低了聲名,又恐朝廷不敬重了。」 if we lose to him again, not only will our reputation suffer, but I fear the court will no longer hold us in respect." Xingzhe said, "Well said. Come here, my child — win this for me and I will reward you handsomely." He then changed his gold-banded cudgel into a razor, and embracing the boy, said, "There, there, bear the pain and don't cry out — let me shave your head for you." In a moment the hair was shaved off; he balled it up and stuffed it into a crevice at the foot of the cabinet. He put away the razor, felt the boy's bare shaven head, and said, "My child, your head now looks like a monk's, only your clothes don't match. Take them off, and I will transform them for you." The Daoist boy was wearing a scallion-green cloud-patterned robe of embroidered silk trimmed with brocade, a crane-feather cloak — and indeed he took it off. Xingzhe blew a breath of immortal breath upon it and cried, "Change!" — and it at once turned into an earthen-yellow monk's robe, which he put on the boy. He then plucked two more hairs and changed them into a wooden fish, placing it in the boy's hands, and said, "Disciple, listen carefully: if they call out 'Daoist boy,' whatever you do, do not come out;若叫和尚,你就與我頂開櫃蓋,敲著木魚,念一卷佛經鑽出來,方得成功也。」 if they call out 'monk,' then push open the cabinet lid for me, strike the wooden fish, chant a scripture of the Buddhist faith, and crawl out — only then will our plan succeed." The boy said, "I only know how to chant the Scripture of the Three Officials, the Scripture of the Northern Dipper, and the Scripture for Averting Calamity — I don't know any Buddhist scripture." Xingzhe said, "Can you chant the Buddha's name?" The boy said, "Amitabha — who doesn't know how to chant that?" Xingzhe said, "Very well then, just chant that, and it will spare me teaching you further. Remember it well — I am going now." He again turned into a gnat, crawled out, and flew to Tang Seng's earlobe, saying, "Master, just guess it's a monk." Sanzang said, "This time he is certain to win." Xingzhe said, "How can you be so sure?" Sanzang said, "The scriptures say, 'The Three Treasures are the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha.' A monk too is a treasure."
Just as this was being said, Immortal Huli spoke up, "Your Majesty, this third round is a Daoist boy." He called and called, but the one inside would not come out. Sanzang pressed his palms together and said, "It is a monk." Bajie shouted with all his might, "Inside the cabinet is a monk!" The boy suddenly pushed open the cabinet lid, struck the wooden fish, chanting the Buddha's name, and crawled out. The two ranks of civil and military officials, delighted, all cheered at once. The three Daoists were so alarmed their mouths clamped shut and they could say not a word.
The king said, "This monk must have spirits and ghosts assisting him. How else could a Daoist boy go into the cabinet and come out transformed into a monk? Even if a court barber had gone in after him, he could only have shaved the head — how could the clothes fit him so perfectly too, and how could his mouth chant the Buddha's name? National Preceptor, ah, let him go." Immortal Huli said, "Your Majesty, in any case, a worthy opponent has met his match, a fine talent has met his rival. This poor Daoist will use the martial arts I learned in my youth on Mount Zhongnan, and contend with him outright once more." The king said, "What sort of martial arts?" Huli said, "The three of us brothers each have some measure of divine power: we can cut off our own heads and set them back on again;剖腹剜心,還再長完;split open our bellies and gouge out our hearts, and have them grow whole again;滾油鍋裡,又能洗澡。」 and we can bathe in a cauldron of boiling oil." The king, greatly alarmed, said, "All three of these are paths to certain death." Huli said, "It is precisely because we have such powers that we dare speak such bold words — we are determined to contend with him until the matter is settled." The king then called out, "Monk of the Tang court, my National Preceptor will not release you — he still wishes to wager with you at beheading, disemboweling, and bathing in a cauldron of boiling oil."
Xingzhe, who had just been flying back and forth as a gnat carrying news, hearing this, at once withdrew the hair, resumed his true form, and laughed heartily, "What luck, what luck — business has come to my door!" Bajie said, "All three of these are life-threatening affairs — how can you call it business coming to your door?" Xingzhe said, "You still don't know my true abilities." Bajie said, "Elder brother, with all this shape-shifting and sleight of hand, you already have plenty — what more abilities could you have?" Xingzhe said, "Well, I—
Hearing this, Bajie and Sha Seng burst out laughing.
Xingzhe stepped forward and said, "Your Majesty, this little monk knows how to have his head cut off." The king said, "How do you know how to have your head cut off?" Xingzhe said, "Back in the day, cultivating in the monastery, I once met an itinerant Chan monk who taught me a method of beheading — I don't know if it's any good, but let me try it out fresh today." The king laughed, "This monk is young and doesn't understand — how can beheading be something to try out fresh? The head is the chief of the six yang forces — cut it off and you die at once." Huli said, "Your Majesty, that is exactly what we want, so that we may finally vent the anger in our hearts." The befuddled king, believing his words, at once gave the order to set up the execution ground.
At the word of the decree, three thousand Imperial Guardsmen at once arrayed themselves outside the court gate. The king ordered, "Let the monk go first to be beheaded." Xingzhe answered cheerfully, "I'll go first, I'll go first." He cupped his hands and called out loudly, "National Preceptor, forgive my boldness — I claim the first turn." Then he turned on his heel and walked straight out. Tang Seng seized him by the hand and said, "Disciple, ah, be careful — that is no place for jesting." Xingzhe said, "What is there to fear? Let go of my hand, and let me go."
The Great Sage went straight to the execution ground, where he was seized by the executioners, bound into a tight bundle, and pressed down upon the high earthen mound; then came a shout, "Behead him!" and with a whoosh the head was cut clean off. The executioner then gave it a kick, and it went rolling off like a rolling watermelon, tumbling some thirty or forty paces away. From the stump of Xingzhe's neck, not a drop of blood flowed. Only a voice was heard calling from within his belly, "Head, come back!" Immortal Luli, seeing such skill, was alarmed, and at once recited an incantation, summoning the local land-gods and spirits of that place: "Hold that head fast, and once I have beaten this monk and reported it to the king, I will have your little shrine rebuilt into a great temple, and your clay image remade into a true golden form." Now, because Huli possessed the Five Thunders magic, these local land-gods and spirits were also obliged to obey his commands, and secretly they truly did hold Xingzhe's head down. Xingzhe called out again, "Head, come back!" but the head seemed to have taken root — there was no hope of moving it. Xingzhe, anxious now, clenched his fists and gave a mighty heave, snapping every one of the ropes that bound him, and shouted, "Grow!" — with a whoosh a new head grew out from the stump of his neck. This so terrified the executioners that every one of their hearts quailed, and the Imperial Guardsmen trembled to a man. The supervising official of the execution rushed into the court to report, "Your Majesty, that little monk was beheaded, and yet another head has grown out." Bajie said with a cold laugh, "Sha Seng, who would have known elder brother had such skill as this?" Sha Seng said, "He has seventy-two transformations — so he could grow seventy-two heads if he liked."
那獃子伸手一摸,就笑得呆呆睜睜道:「妙哉,妙哉!Before he had finished speaking, Xingzhe came walking up and called out, "Master." Sanzang, greatly pleased, said, "Disciple, was it hard on you?" Xingzhe said, "Not hard at all — quite good fun, actually." Bajie said, "Elder brother, do you need any wound medicine for the blade cut?" Xingzhe said, "Why don't you feel for yourself and see if there's any scar?" The idiot reached out and felt, then broke into a foolish, wide-eyed grin, "Marvelous, marvelous! It's grown back whole and complete — there isn't even the trace of a scar."
Just as the brothers were all rejoicing together, they heard the king call for the travel rescript to be handed over: "You are pardoned of all guilt. Go quickly, go quickly." Xingzhe said, "The rescript I will indeed accept, but the National Preceptor too must go to the execution ground and have his head cut off — he ought to try it out fresh as well." The king said, "Great National Preceptor, it seems this monk will not let you go either. You must contend with him and win — only, pray, do not frighten your sovereign." Huli had no choice but to go; he too was bound and thrown down by several executioners, and with one swing his head was cut off and likewise kicked away, rolling more than thirty paces. From the stump of his neck too no blood flowed, and he too called out, "Head, come back!" Xingzhe at once plucked a hair, blew a breath of immortal breath upon it, and cried, "Change!" — it turned into a yellow dog, which ran into the field, seized the Daoist's head in its mouth in one bite, and dashed straight to the Imperial Moat, where it dropped the head and ran off; we need not speak further of that.
Now, the Daoist called out three times in a row, but the head did not return — how could he match Xingzhe's skill? It would not grow back, and from the stump of his neck bright red blood came gushing and gurgling out. Pitiful indeed — for all his arts of summoning wind and rain, how could they compare to the true immortal fruits of eternal life? In a moment he collapsed and fell to the dust. The onlookers, gathering to look, found it was nothing but a headless yellow-furred tiger.
The supervising officer came to report again: "Your Majesty, the Great National Teacher's head was cut off and could not grow back — he died in the dust, and turns out to be a headless yellow-furred tiger." Hearing this report, the king was greatly startled and turned pale, staring fixedly at the two Daoists without blinking. Luli rose to his feet and said, "My elder martial brother's life and fortune have already ended — how could he be a yellow tiger? This must all be the doing of that wretched monk, who used some trick of disguise to transform my elder brother into a beast. I will not let him off now — I am determined to compete with him in cutting open the belly and gouging out the heart."
Hearing this, the king only then steadied his mind and came back to his senses. He called out again, "Little monk, the Second National Teacher still wishes to compete with you." Xingzhe said, "This little monk has long eaten no cooked food; the other day, traveling west, I happened to meet a household offering a vegetarian meal and ate a few too many steamed buns. These past few days my belly has been aching — I suppose worms have bred in it. I was just about to borrow Your Majesty's knife to cut open my belly, take out my internal organs, and wash clean my spleen and stomach, so that I may properly go west to see the Buddha." Hearing this, the king ordered, "Take him to the execution ground." The many attendants there, some supporting him, some pulling him along, led him off. Xingzhe shook off their hands and said, "No need for anyone to support me — I'll walk there myself. But one thing: my hands must not be bound, so that I can use them to wash and scrub my organs." The king issued an edict: "Do not tie his hands."
Xingzhe swaggered along and went straight to the execution ground. He leaned his body against the great stake, untied his sash, and bared his belly. The executioner looped one rope around his neck and shoulders and bound another around his legs and feet, then flashed a short ox-eared knife and slashed it across the belly, stabbing open a hole. Xingzhe used both hands to pull open his belly, drew out his intestines and organs, and after arranging them strand by strand for quite a while, put them all back inside just as before, coiled as they had been. He pinched the skin of his belly together, blew a breath of immortal breath, and cried, "Grow!" — and it closed up again just as before.
The king, greatly astonished, took the travel rescript in his hands and said, "Holy monk, do not delay your journey west — take your rescript and go." Xingzhe laughed and said, "The rescript is a small matter. But how about also inviting the Second National Teacher to have a cut-and-gouge as well?" The king said to Luli, "This matter is none of my concern — it was you who wished to be his rival. Go on, go on, then." Luli said, "Set your mind at ease — I reckon I will surely not lose to him."
Just watch — he too, like the Great Sage Sun, swaggered straight into the execution ground. The executioner looped the rope around him, and with a swish of the short ox-eared knife, cut open his belly. He too drew out his liver and intestines and handled them with his hands. Xingzhe at once plucked a hair, blew a breath of immortal breath onto it, and cried, "Change!" It instantly turned into a starving hawk, which spread its wings and talons and, with a swoosh, snatched up all his five viscera, heart, and liver, flying off — no one knew where — to enjoy them. This Daoist was thus reduced to a hollow-chested, split-bellied, blood-dripping ghost, an organless, gutless wandering soul.那劊子手蹬倒大樁,拖屍來看,呀!The executioner kicked over the great stake and dragged the corpse over to look — ah! It turned out to be a white-furred, antlered deer.
Alarmed, the supervising officer hurried again to report: "Ill luck struck the Second National Teacher — just as his belly was being cut open, a starving hawk snatched away all his organs, liver, and intestines, and he lies dead there. His true form turns out to be a white-furred antlered deer." The king said in fear, "How can he be an antlered deer?" The Immortal Yangli then also spoke up: "Since my elder martial brother is dead, how could he show the form of a beast? This must all be that monk working sorcery to do us harm. Let me take revenge for my elder brother." The king said, "What power do you have to defeat him?" Yangli said, "I will compete with him at bathing in a pot of boiling oil." The king then ordered a great cauldron brought, filled with fragrant oil, and had the two of them go compete. Xingzhe said, "Much obliged for the invitation. This little monk hasn't bathed in a long while, and these past couple of days my skin has been dry and itchy — I might as well go have a good soak."
The attending official indeed set up the oil cauldron, stacked dry firewood beneath it, lit a fierce fire, and boiled the oil, then told the monk to go in first. Xingzhe pressed his palms together and said, "I wonder — shall it be a civil bath or a martial bath?" The king asked, "What is a civil bath? And what is a martial bath?" Xingzhe said, "In a civil bath, one does not remove one's clothes — like this, with arms crossed, one goes in, takes a roll, and comes right back out, without soiling or damaging the clothes; if even a drop of grease gets on them, that counts as a loss. In a martial bath, one takes a clothes-rack and a towel, strips off one's clothes, jumps in, and turns somersaults and stands on one's head at will, as though bathing for sport." The king asked Yangli, "Do you wish to have a civil bath or a martial bath with him?" Yangli said, "As for a civil bath, I fear his clothes may have been treated with some elixir that repels oil. Let it be a martial bath."
Xingzhe stepped forward again and said, "Forgive my boldness — I've taken the lead again and again." Just watch him strip off his cloth robe, slip off his tiger-skin skirt, spring up with his body, and leap into the cauldron, tumbling through the churning waves and playing about as if swimming in water. Seeing this, Bajie bit his finger and said to Shaseng, "We really misjudged this monkey. All this time we've been mocking and teasing him for sport — who would have known he had such real skill?" The two of them muttered on together, praising him without end.
Xingzhe, spotting this from a distance, grew suspicious at heart and thought, "That idiot is laughing at me. Truly it is: 'the clever labor much, while the clumsy sit idle.' Here I am, old Sun, putting on such a performance, while he sits there at ease. Let me arrange for him to get bound with a rope, and see whether he's afraid." So, right in the middle of his bathing, he made a splash, plunged down to the bottom of the oil cauldron, transformed into a jujube-pit-shaped nail, and did not rise again.
The supervising officer came forward again and reported: "Your Majesty, the little monk has been boiled to death in the oil." The king was greatly pleased and ordered the bones fished out to be examined. The executioner took an iron strainer and scooped about in the oil cauldron. But the strainer's holes were coarse, and Xingzhe had turned himself as small as a nail; time and again he slipped back down through the holes, so there was no way to scoop him out. The officer reported again: "The monk's body was slight and his bones tender — he has been entirely rendered away." The king then ordered, "Take the other three monks down as well." The guards on either side, seeing how fierce Bajie's face looked, seized and threw him down first, binding his arms behind his back.
Alarmed, Tang Sanzang cried out loudly, "Your Majesty, grant this poor monk a moment's reprieve. That disciple of mine, ever since he took up the faith, has again and again performed meritorious deeds. Today he offended the National Teachers and died in the oil cauldron — but so it is, one who dies first becomes a spirit. How could this poor monk dare cling to life? It is just as officials everywhere govern the common people everywhere. If Your Majesty orders your subject to die, how would your subject dare refuse to die? I only hope for your gracious mercy, to grant me half a cup of cool rice gruel and three paper horses, and allow me to go before the oil cauldron and burn this string of paper money, to express the sentiment between master and disciple — and then I shall accept my punishment." Hearing this, the king said, "That is fair enough — those people of China have much sense of loyalty and duty." He ordered some gruel and yellow paper money brought for him. Indeed these were fetched and handed to Tang Seng.
Tang Seng had Sha Wujing go along with him; as they walked down to below the steps, several guards, grabbing Bajie by the ears, dragged him along to the edge of the cauldron. Sanzang faced the cauldron and prayed: "Disciple Sun Wukong:
Hearing this, Bajie said, "Master, that's not how to pray. — Sha Wujing, you pour the offering of gruel for me, and let me do the praying instead." Bound there on the ground, the idiot said, huffing with anger: "You trouble-making wretched monkey, you ignorant Bimawen;該死的潑猴子,油烹的弼馬溫。You wretched monkey who deserved to die, you Bimawen boiled in oil. The monkey's account is settled, the Bimawen's line is cut off." Sun Xingzhe, down at the bottom of the oil cauldron, heard the idiot cursing wildly, and unable to bear it any longer, revealed his true form and stood stark naked at the bottom of the cauldron, saying, "You rice-guzzling lump of a fool! Who are you cursing?" Seeing this, Tang Seng said, "Disciple, you've frightened me to death!" Sha Seng said, "Elder brother is simply used to playing dead."
Alarmed, the ranks of civil and military officials rushed forward to report: "Your Majesty, that monk did not die after all — he has climbed out of the oil cauldron again." The supervising officer, afraid of having deceived the court, hastily reported instead: "He did indeed die — it's only that the date was inauspicious, and the little monk has come to manifest his spirit." Hearing this, Xingzhe flew into a rage, leapt out of the cauldron, wiped off the grease, put on his clothes, drew out his cudgel, seized the supervising officer, and struck him once on the head, beating him into a lump of flesh, saying, "What spirit am I manifesting?" This so frightened the many officials that they hurriedly untied Bajie and knelt on the ground pleading, "Forgive us, forgive us." The king rose from his dragon throne to flee, but Xingzhe went up into the hall and caught hold of him, saying, "Your Majesty, do not run off — let your Third National Teacher go down into the oil cauldron too." Trembling with fear, the emperor said, "Third National Teacher, save my life — go down into the cauldron quickly, and don't let the monk strike me."
Yangli went down from the hall and, following Xingzhe's example, took off his clothes, jumped into the oil cauldron, and likewise made a show of bathing in it. Xingzhe let go of the king, went near the edge of the oil cauldron, and called for the fire-tender to add more wood.卻伸手探了一把,呀!Then he reached out his hand and felt about — ah! The boiling oil was completely ice-cold. He thought to himself in secret, "When I bathed it was scalding hot, but when he bathes it is cold. 急縱身跳在空中,念聲「唵」字咒語,把那北海龍王喚來:「我把你這個帶角的蚯蚓,有鱗的泥鰍!I understand now — this must be some Dragon King, unknown to me, protecting him here." He at once sprang up into the air, recited the mantra syllable "Om," and summoned the Dragon King of the North Sea: "You, you horned earthworm, you scaled loach! How dare you help this Daoist, sending a cold dragon to guard the bottom of the cauldron, so that he might show off his powers and defeat me?" Frightened, the Dragon King said again and again, "I, Ao Shun, would not dare to help him. Great Sage, you must not know — this wretched creature underwent bitter cultivation for a time and managed to shed his original shell, but he only truly received the Five Thunder Method; the rest he picked up from deviant sideline paths, and it is hard for him to return to the true immortal Way. This trick is the 'Great Flaying' technique he learned on Xiaomao Mountain. Those other two — the Great Sage has already broken their magic and made them reveal their true forms. This one too has refined a cold dragon of his own, which can only fool ordinary worldly people for sport — how could it deceive the Great Sage? I, this lesser dragon, will now take back his cold dragon, and see to it that his bones are crushed and his skin scorched." Xingzhe said, "Take it back at once, and spare yourself a beating." The Dragon King then turned into a whirlwind, went to the edge of the oil cauldron, seized the cold dragon, and carried it down to the sea — no more of that need be told.
Xingzhe came down and stood before the hall together with Sanzang, Bajie, and Shaseng, watching the Daoist thrash about in the boiling oil, unable to climb out. He slipped and fell, and in an instant his bones came apart, his skin scorched, and his flesh turned to mush.
The supervising officer came again to report: "Your Majesty, the Third National Teacher has been fried away." The king, tears streaming from his eyes, beat his hands upon the imperial desk and wept aloud, saying:

What it’s about
After Tripitaka wins the rain contest, the Daoist preceptors demand further trials. In a contest of meditation, Tripitaka and Tiger-Power sit aloft on platforms, but the Daoists send insects to disturb the monk. Wukong protects his master and retaliates by making the Daoist fall. He then helps Tripitaka identify objects hidden behind screens after the opponents secretly replace them, defeating their attempt to turn prediction into a rigged court spectacle.
The contests become openly lethal. Tiger-Power proposes beheading, Deer-Power disembowelment and Antelope-Power an oil bath, each relying on occult protections to restore himself. Wukong survives all three ordeals and quietly prevents his rivals' recoveries: the tiger cannot reclaim his head, the deer loses the power to rejoin his organs, and the antelope is boiled when the cooling dragon is driven away. Their animal bodies appear at death, and the chastened king releases the Buddhists and approves the pilgrims' journey.
When it was written 背景
This 回 closes the Cart-Slow arc by escalating performance into mortal proof. Wukong does not win because bodily mutilation is harmless; he wins because his transformations and celestial status exceed the borrowed techniques on which the three animal spirits depend. The revelation of their carcasses retrospectively answers the kingdom's argument about true teachers, though the earlier persecution remains a human political failure as well as demonic deceit. Learners should read the rapid contests as a cumulative sequence and note how cheating occurs on both sides, complicating any simple contrast between pure and false magic.
