Monkey Contests with the Three Taoist Immortals to Pray for Rain

045Chapter 45

To resume: Great Sage Sun pinched Sha Monk with his left hand and pinched Zhu Bajie with his right, and the two of them at once came to their senses. They sat up on their high perches, faces held stiff, and said not a word.No matter how the Daoist priests lit lamps and torches and searched high and low, the three of them looked exactly like clay statues gilded in gold.:「?」鹿:「?」:「Immortal Huli said, "If there were no evildoer, how could all the offerings have been eaten up?" Immortal Luli said, "Yet it does look like the doing of men eating—things with skins have all been peeled, things with pits have all had the pits spat out—so how is it no human form is to be seen?" Immortal Yangli said, "Elder brother, have no doubt. It must be that our reverent hearts and pious devotion, chanting sutras here day and night and submitting our memorials before and after, and moreover in the name of the court itself, have surely moved the Heavenly Venerables. It must be that the Sanqing lords' sacred carriages have descended and partaken of these offerings.?」:「。」:「While the immortal chariots have not yet returned and the crane carriages are still here, we may bow and report to the Heavenly Venerables, beseeching some holy water and golden elixir to present to His Majesty—would this not mean eternal life and longevity, and would it not also show him the fruits of our labors?" Immortal Huli said, "Well said." He instructed, "Disciples, strike up the music and chant the scriptures.。」On one side, fetch the ritual vestments, and let me pace the Dipper and offer prayers." The young Daoists all obeyed the order, and the two files arranged themselves in neat order.》。With a ringing clang of the chime stone, they chanted together a scroll of the Huangting Daode Zhenjing.Immortal Huli put on his ritual robes, held up his jade tablet, danced and scattered dust before the images, prostrated himself on the ground, and facing upward reported thus:

Hearing this, Bajie's heart pounded with unease, and he murmured secretly to Xingzhe, "This is our fault: we ate the food and did not leave, and now we must sit through this kind of prayer and invocation.?」:「How are we to answer?" Xingzhe pinched him again, then suddenly opened his mouth and called out, "Young immortals of a later generation, hold off your bows and prayers a while.。」:「We have come from the Peach Banquet of the Queen Mother and did not bring golden elixir or holy water with us; wait for another day and we will bestow them upon you." When the Daoists great and small heard these words spoken, every single one of them shook in their robes and trembled, saying, "My lord! My lord!。」鹿A living Heavenly Venerable has descended among mortals—by no means let this pass; come what may, let us beg for some method of eternal life." Immortal Luli stepped forward and bowed again, saying:

:「。」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「Sha Seng pinched Xingzhe and murmured quietly, "Brother, this is getting serious—they've come to pray again." Xingzhe said, "Let's give them a little." Bajie said quietly, "Where would we get any?" Xingzhe said, "Just watch me—when I have some, you'll both have some too." When the Daoist had finished his music, Xingzhe spoke up, "You young immortals need not prostrate yourselves. If I withhold holy water from you entirely, I fear it would cut off your lineage;。」:「but if I grant it to you, that would be far too easy a thing." Hearing this, the assembled Daoists all bowed down together and kowtowed, saying, "We earnestly beg that the Heavenly Venerables consider the reverence of your disciples, and in your great mercy bestow just a little.。」:「。」Your disciples will broadly proclaim the Way and its Virtue, and urge the king to honor the mysterious gate of Daoism everywhere." Xingzhe said, "Since that is so, fetch vessels." The Daoists all together kowtowed in thanks for this favor.殿Immortal Huli, being fond of showing strength, himself carried over a great vat and set it in the hall;鹿Immortal Luli brought a sand basin and placed it upon the offering table;Immortal Yangli plucked the flowers from a vase and moved it to the middle.:「殿。」殿Xingzhe said, "All of you go out of the hall and close the lattice doors—do not let the secrets of Heaven leak out, so that I may leave you some holy water." The Daoists all knelt together below the cinnabar steps and shut the hall doors.

Then Xingzhe stood up straight, lifted his tiger-skin skirt, and let loose a vaseful of stinking urine.:「Seeing this, Zhu Bajie said with delight, "Brother, in all these years we've been brothers, this is the one thing I've never gotten to do.西。」I've just eaten a bit, so I really do need to attend to this business." The fool hitched up his clothes, and with a great rushing gush—just like the boards coming down at Lüliang Rapids—he splashed and sprayed a whole sand basin full.Sha Monk in turn filled half the vat.:「。」He arranged his clothes as before and sat upright above, saying, "Young immortals, receive the holy water."

:「。」便The Daoists pushed open the lattice, kowtowed and bowed in thanks, carried out the vat, and gathered the vase, the basin, and all into one place, saying, "Disciples, fetch a cup so we may taste it." A young Daoist at once took a tea cup and handed it to the old Daoist. The Daoist ladled out a cupful, drank it down, and kept smacking his lips and licking them. :「。」:「。」:「。」Immortal Luli said, "Elder brother, does it taste good?" The old Daoist puckered his mouth and said, "Not especially good—there's a rather pungent taste to it." Immortal Yangli said, "Let me have a taste." He too took a mouthful and said, "There's a stink of pig urine to it." Xingzhe, sitting up above and hearing these words spoken, already knew the game was up, and said, "Let me put on a bit of a show and leave my name behind properly." He called out loudly:

Hearing these words, the Daoists blocked the doors, and all together took up forks, brooms, tiles, and stones, and struck out wildly, heedless of head or face, into the room.Splendid Xingzhe—he tucked Sha Seng under his left arm and Bajie under his right, burst out the door, mounted a beam of cloud-light, and headed straight back to the abbot's quarters of Zhiyuan Temple. Not daring to disturb their master, the three of them went back to sleep once more.

It was already the third point of the fifth watch. The king of that country held court, with the two ranks of civil and military officials, four hundred court officers assembled; crimson gauze lanterns shone bright, and clouds of incense curled thick about the precious tripods.

:「。」穿:「By this time Tang Sanzang had awakened and called out, "Disciples, disciples, attend me—let us go to have the travel rescript renewed." Xingzhe, Sha Seng, and Bajie hurriedly rose, put on their clothes, and stood in attendance at his sides, saying, "We report to master.。」This king of the country trusts those Daoists, promotes Daoism and suppresses Buddhism; we fear that if there is any slip of the tongue, he will refuse to renew the rescript, so we shall protect and attend master, and all go to court together." Tang Seng was greatly pleased, and put on his brocade cassock.Xingzhe carried the travel rescript, had Wujing hold the alms bowl, and had Wuneng carry the monk's staff;the baggage and the horse were entrusted to the monks of Zhiyuan Temple to watch over. They went straight to the front of the Five Phoenix Tower, made their bows to the eunuch official at the gate, gave their names, and said they were monks from the Tang court of the Land of the East come to have their travel rescript renewed, and asked that this be reported and passed on. :「That gate officer went into court, prostrated himself at the golden steps, and reported, "Outside there are four monks who say they are from the Tang court of the Land of the East, come to seek the renewal of a travel rescript, and are now waiting before the Five Phoenix Tower for the royal decree." Hearing this report, the king said, "These monks have nowhere else to seek death, so they come here seeking it.?」:「Why did the patrol officers not seize them and bring them bound before us?" From beside the throne there stepped forth the Grand Preceptor in attendance, who reported, "The Tang court of the Land of the East is in Jambudvipa of the South, styled the Great Middle Kingdom. To come here is a distance of ten thousand li, and the road is full of demons and monsters.西These monks must surely have some power of magic, or else they would not have dared to come west.。」殿We beg Your Majesty, in consideration of these monks who have come from afar in the Middle Kingdom, to summon them to have their rescript examined and let them pass, so as not to lose the meaning of a good karmic bond." The king approved the memorial, and had Tang Seng and the others summoned before the golden hall.Master and disciples arranged themselves before the steps, and held up the travel rescript to present to the king.

:「。」The king unrolled it and was just looking it over when the eunuch official came again to report, "The three National Preceptors are coming!" In a fluster the king put away the rescript, hastily rose from the dragon throne, had his attendants set out an embroidered stool, and bowed to receive them.Sanzang and the others turned to look, and saw that great immortal swaying and swaggering along, followed by a pair of page boys with tufted, disheveled hair, coming straight in.The two ranks of officials bent their backs and bowed, not daring to look up.殿He mounted the golden hall and, facing the king, offered not the slightest courtesy.:「?」:「The king said, "National Preceptor, I did not send for you—how is it you condescend to come down today?" The old Daoist said, "There is a matter I must report to you, and so I have come.?」:「西。」:「。」:「Those four monks—from what country do they come?" The king said, "They are envoys sent from the Tang court of the Land of the East to fetch scriptures from the Western Heaven, come here to have their rescript renewed." The three Daoists clapped their hands and laughed loudly, saying, "I said he had run off, but here he still is!" The king said in alarm, "National Preceptor, what do you mean by this?使He had only just given his name and I was about to have him seized and sent over for the National Preceptors' disposal, but the Grand Preceptor in attendance had reasoned so soundly in his memorial that, out of regard for the intentions of these travelers from afar and unwilling to destroy a good karmic bond with the Middle Kingdom, I summoned them in to have their rescript examined—I did not expect the National Preceptor to raise this question.?」:「It must be that they have given offense to your honored countenance—is there some transgression?" The Daoist said with a laugh, "Your Majesty does not know.He came yesterday, and outside the east gate beat two of my disciples to death, released five hundred condemned monks, and smashed the carts to pieces;then in the night he broke into our temple, destroyed the sacred images of the Three Pure Ones, and stole and ate the offerings bestowed by the emperor. We were deceived by him, thinking it was the Heavenly Venerables who had descended, and sought some holy water and golden elixir to present to Your Majesty, hoping thereby to extend your life and grant you longevity;便we did not expect that he had left behind a bit of urine, deceiving and hoodwinking us.Each of us drank a mouthful and tasted what it truly was, and we were just about to lay hands on him and seize him when he got away.。」Today he is still here—this is truly a case of 'the path of enemies is narrow.'" Hearing this, the king flew into a rage and wished to put all four of them to death.

:「。」:「?」:「Great Sage Sun pressed his palms together, spoke up, and called out in a stern, loud voice, "Your Majesty, stay your thunderous wrath a while, and allow us monks to speak our piece." The king said, "You have offended the National Preceptor—how could the National Preceptor's words be in error?" Xingzhe said, "He says that yesterday, outside the city, I beat two of his disciples to death—who bore witness to this?Even granting this charge unjustly against ourselves, let two monks pay with their lives, and still release two to go on for the scriptures. He also says I smashed the carts and freed the condemned monks—this too has no witness, and by rights should not warrant death; let one more monk take the blame for it and be done.。」:「?」:「He says I destroyed the Three Pure Ones and threw the temple into disorder—this too is a frame-up against us." The king said, "How do you show this is a frame-up?" Xingzhe said, "We monks are men of the Land of the East, newly arrived in these parts—we do not even know our way about the streets yet, so how in the night would we know the goings-on within his temple?便If he really left behind urine, he should have caught the culprit on the spot then and there—yet only at this late hour does he name and accuse someone. There is no end of people in the world who borrow false names and pretend to be others—how can he say for certain it was I?。」We beg Your Majesty to calm your anger and examine the matter closely." The king, being by nature confused and irresolute, was thrown into indecision once Xingzhe had spoken his piece.

:「。」:「?」Just as he was caught in doubt, the eunuch official came again to report, "Your Majesty, outside the gate there are many village elders waiting to be summoned." The king said, "What business do they have?" and at once ordered them summoned. They were called before the hall, and some thirty or forty village elders kowtowed toward the throne, saying, "Ten thousand years to Your Majesty! This spring there has been no rain at all, and we fear a drought this summer, so we have come specially to report this and beg that the honored National Preceptors pray for a timely rain, to bring relief broadly to the common people." The king said, "Elders, withdraw for now—rain will come presently." The elders bowed in thanks and withdrew.:「The king said, "You Tang monks—do you know why I revere Daoism and suppress Buddhism? It is only because, in years past when rain was sought, the monks of our court never once managed to bring down a single drop;fortunately Heaven sent down the National Preceptors, who rescued us from disaster. Now you have come from afar and given offense to the National Preceptor, and by rights should be charged with a crime at once, but I will for now pardon you—dare you compete with our National Preceptor in praying for rain?西。」:「。」If you can bring down a good rain to relieve the ten thousand people, I will at once pardon your offense, renew your travel rescript, and let you go west; but if you lose the contest and no rain falls, I will have you all dragged to the execution ground and made an example of by the law." Xingzhe said with a laugh, "This little monk knows a thing or two about praying for rain himself."

Hearing this, the king at once ordered the altar ground swept and prepared.:「。」On one side he ordered, "Ready the carriage—we ourself will go up to the Five Phoenix Tower in person to watch." At that time the many officials readied the procession, and in a moment they had gone up and taken their seats on the tower.Tang Sanzang, following Xingzhe, Sha Seng, and Bajie, stood in attendance below the tower. The three Daoists sat accompanying the king up on the tower.:「。」After a little while, an officer galloped up on horseback to report, "Everything at the altar ground is fully prepared in every particular—we beg the National Preceptor to ascend the altar."

Immortal Huli half rose, cupped his hands in salute, took leave of the king, and went straight down from the tower.:「?」:「。」:「Xingzhe stepped forward and blocked his way, saying, "Sir, where are you going?" The great immortal said, "To ascend the altar and pray for rain." Xingzhe said, "You are being a bit too full of your own importance, not yielding at all to a monk come from so far away.』。Well, never mind—it is just as the saying goes, 'a strong dragon cannot overpower a local snake.'。」:「?」:「You go first, sir, but we must first have this made clear before the king." The great immortal said, "Make what clear?" Xingzhe said, "If both of us go up on the altar to pray for rain, how will we know whether the rain is yours or mine?。」:「。」:「。」:「。」:「Then it will not be clear whose achievement it is." The king, listening from above, thought secretly with delight, "This little monk's talk actually has some substance to it." Sha Seng, hearing this, laughed to himself, "Little do they know—he hasn't even brought out a tenth of what's really in his belly yet." The great immortal said, "No need to discuss it—His Majesty will naturally know." Xingzhe said, "Even if he knows, still, as a monk come from afar, I have never yet had dealings with you.。」:「If the two of us muddle the credit together at that time, it will come to nothing worthwhile—we must have it made clear beforehand for things to go properly." The great immortal said, "Once up on the altar, just watch for my signal tablet: at the first sound of the tablet, wind will come;at the second sound, clouds will rise;at the third sound, thunder and lightning will crash together;at the fourth sound, rain will fall;。」:「at the fifth sound, the clouds will scatter and the rain will stop." Xingzhe laughed and said, "Splendid indeed! This monk has never seen the like.。」After you, after you."

The great immortal strode forward, and Sanzang and the others followed behind, going straight to outside the altar gate.Looking up, they saw there a high platform, about three zhang or more in height.宿To the left and right of the platform were planted banners of the Twenty-Eight Constellations. On top was set a table, and on the table an incense burner, from which the smoke of incense curled thick. On either side stood two candle-stands, on which wind-candles burned bright.Beside the burner leaned a gold tablet, engraved with the title of the Thunder God.滿Below were five great vats, each filled to the brim with clear water, on the surface of which floated willow branches, and on the willow branches rested an iron tablet, on which were written the talismanic characters of the Thunder Bureau.使To left and right were five great stakes, on which were written the registers of the Fierce Thunder Emissaries of the Five Directions.Beside each stake stood two Daoists, each holding an iron hammer, waiting ready to strike the stake.Behind the platform were many Daoists, busy there writing out documents.使Right in the middle was set up a paper furnace, and there were also several life-like effigies representing the talisman-bearing emissaries and the earth-god assistant deities.

The great immortal walked straight in, without the least deference, and went right up onto the high platform to take his stand.Beside him a young Daoist held up several sheets of yellow paper written with talismanic characters and a precious sword, and handed them to the great immortal. The great immortal took the sword, recited an incantation, and burned one talisman over the candle flame. The two or three Daoists below took up a talisman-bearing effigy and a document, and likewise set them alight with fire. Then above there sounded a crack of the signal tablet, and at once, far off in the empty sky, a gust of wind came drifting faintly in.:「Zhu Bajie muttered to himself, "This is bad, this is bad—this Daoist really does have some skill.。」:「。」The tablet sounded just once, and sure enough the wind rose." Xingzhe said, "Brother, quietly now—don't say another word to me, just keep on guarding master, and let me go off and attend to business."

:「!」Splendid Great Sage—he plucked out a strand of hair, breathed a breath of immortal energy onto it, and called, "Change!" and it changed at once into a false Xingzhe, standing beside Tang Seng.:「?」His true body sent forth its primal spirit and sped up into the midair, calling out loudly, "Who is it in charge of the wind here?" In a fluster, Granny Wind clutched tight her sack, and Xun Er'lang tied fast the cord of his bag, and they came forward to offer their courtesies.:「西Xingzhe said, "I am escorting the sagely monk of the Tang court to the Western Heaven to fetch scriptures, and passing through the country of Chechi we are in a contest with that demon-Daoist to pray for rain—why do you not aid old Sun, but instead aid that Daoist?I will spare you for now—withdraw the wind;。」:「。」if there is so much as a breath of wind that stirs even a hair of that Daoist's beard, I shall have each of you beaten twenty strokes with the iron rod." Granny Wind said, "We would not dare, we would not dare." And thereupon all trace of wind vanished.:「退Bajie, unable to hold back, shouted out in a jumble, "Sir, please withdraw—the signal tablet has sounded, so how is it not the least bit of wind is to be seen?。」Come on down, and let us go up."

The Daoist again took up the signal tablet, burned a talisman-petition, and struck it once more with a crack—and at once the empty sky was seen covered over with cloud and mist.:「?」Great Sage Sun again called out overhead, "Who is it spreading the clouds?" In a fluster, the Cloud-Pushing Boy and the Mist-Spreading Lord came before him to offer their courtesies.Xingzhe once again related the whole affair as before. That Cloud Lad and Mist Boy also withdrew the clouds and mist, letting the sun blaze forth brilliantly, with not a single cloud across the vast sky.:「Bajie laughed and said, "This fellow can only fool the emperor and deceive the common people — he has no real skill at all.?」Two strikes of the command tablet have sounded, so why still no clouds appearing?"

The Daoist grew agitated at heart, gripped his precious sword, let down his hair, recited an incantation, burned a talisman, and struck the command tablet down once more.Just then, from within the Southern Heavenly Gate, Heavenly Marshal Deng led the Duke of Thunder and the Mother of Lightning down into midair, and they came before Wukong to pay their respects.:「Wukong recounted the whole affair once more, and said, "How is it you have come so faithfully??」:「What decree brought you?" The Heavenly Marshal said, "That Daoist's Five Thunders Method is genuine. He dispatched a document and burned a proclamation, which startled the Jade Emperor, who cast down an edict directly to the mansion of the Patriarch of the Ninth Heaven, Responder to the Primal, Universal Transformer of Thunder Sound.。」:「。」We have come bearing the decree to assist with thunder and lightning to bring rain." Wukong said, "Since that's so, hold everything for now, and wait together for old Monkey to act." And indeed, no thunder rumbled and no lightning flashed.

The Daoist grew ever more flustered, and again added incense, burned a talisman, recited incantations, and struck down the command tablet. In midair, the Dragon Kings of the Four Seas also came crowding in together.:「?」Wukong shouted at them directly, "Ao Guang, where are you off to?" Ao Guang, Ao Shun, Ao Qin, and Ao Run came forward and offered their salutations.:「Wukong once again recounted the whole affair, saying, "You troubled yourselves before, but it came to nothing;。」:「。」:「。」 :「for today's business, I hope you will lend your aid." The Dragon Kings said, "We obey, we obey." Wukong then thanked Ao Shun, saying, "The other day I was indebted to your son for binding the monster and rescuing my master." The Dragon King said, "That wretch is still chained up in the sea; I did not dare act on my own, and was just about to ask the Great Sage to decide his punishment." Wukong said, "Deal with him however you see fit.For now, just lend me your help in this one task. That Daoist has finished his four strikes of the command tablet, and now it's old Monkey's turn to go up and take care of things.。」:「But I don't know how to dispatch talismans, burn proclamations, or strike any command tablet, so you gentlemen will have to help me along." Heavenly Marshal Deng said, "When the Great Sage gives an order, who would dare disobey? It's only that we must have some signal before we dare act according to command;。」:「。」:「otherwise the thunder and rain would come out in disorder, and it would make the Great Sage look unpracticed." Wukong said, "Then I'll use my cudgel as the signal." The Duke of Thunder cried out in alarm, "Good grandfather!?」:「。」:「。」「。」:「。」「。」:「。」「。」:「。」「How could we survive a blow from that cudgel?" Wukong said, "I'm not going to strike you with it. Just watch — when I point this cudgel upward once, that's the signal to raise the wind." Granny Wind and Xun Er readily agreed without pause, "We'll release the wind at once." "When the cudgel points a second time, that's the signal to spread clouds." The Cloud-Pushing Lad and the Mist-Spreading Squire said, "We'll spread the clouds, we'll spread the clouds." "When the cudgel points a third time, that's the signal for thunder to roll and lightning to flash." The Duke of Thunder and the Mother of Lightning said, "At your service, at your service." "When the cudgel points a fourth time, that's the signal for rain to fall." The Dragon Kings said, "We obey, we obey." "When the cudgel points a fifth time, that's the signal for the great sun to come out and the sky to clear.。」See that none of you fails or delays."

His instructions given, he then brought down his cloud, shook out the transformed hair, and drew it back onto his body. Those people, with their mortal eyes and common flesh, how could they possibly know of this?:「Wukong then called out loudly from the side, "Master, if you please.。」Your four strikes of the command tablet have all sounded, and still there is no wind, cloud, thunder, or rain — it's time to give way to me." The Daoist had no choice; not daring to occupy the platform any longer, he had to step down and yield it to him.Pouting with displeasure, he went straight up to the tower to see the king.:「。」:「?」:「。」:「Wukong said, "Let me follow him and see what he has to say." He heard the king ask, "I have been here listening with washed ears in all sincerity, yet your four signals have sounded and there is no wind or rain — why is that?" The Daoist said, "Today the Dragon Gods are all away from home." Wukong said sternly, "Your Majesty, the Dragon Gods are all at home; it's only that this Royal Preceptor's magic is ineffective and cannot summon them.。」:「。」Let this monk invite them and you shall see." The king said, "Go up to the altar at once; I shall remain here awaiting the rain."

:「。」:「。」:「。」:「Having received the decree, Wukong hastened back to the altar site, and pulling at Tang Seng, said, "Master, please go up onto the platform." Tang Seng said, "Disciple, I don't know how to pray for rain." Bajie laughed and said, "He's done you in — if there's no rain, they'll pile up firewood and burn you to settle the account." Wukong said, "You don't need to know how to pray for rain — you're good at reciting sutras.。」》。Let me assist you." Only then did the elder step forward and mount the altar; once on top, he sat down solemnly, settled his mind and gathered his spirit, and silently recited the Heart Sutra of Prajnaparamita.:「?」:「Just as he sat there, suddenly an official came galloping up to ask, "That monk there, why do you not strike the command tablet or burn talismans and proclamations?" Wukong answered loudly, "No need!No need!。」We pray through quiet cultivation." The official went back to report, and no more is said of that.

When Wukong heard that the venerable master had finished reciting the sutra, he took the iron cudgel from his ear, waved it once against the wind, and it grew to a length of over ten feet and as thick as a bowl; he then pointed the cudgel once toward the sky. When Granny Wind saw this, she hastily loosened the mouth of her leather bag;Xun Er untied the cord at its mouth.滿All at once came the roar of whistling wind, and throughout the whole city tiles were ripped off and bricks overturned, sand flew up and stones went skittering.Looking at it, this was truly a mighty wind, quite unlike any ordinary wind.Just see:

Indeed, it was a fierce gale rising in full force.

Sun Wukong then displayed his divine power once more; he gave the gold-banded cudgel a twirl and pointed it toward the sky again.Just see:

At this time, murky mist grew hazy and thick, and dense clouds massed heavily.

Sun Wukong again gave the gold-banded cudgel a twirl and pointed it toward the sky once more.It threw into a panic:

The deep thunder guarded its flashes, crashing and booming, ping-pang, as if in a force fit to split the earth and topple mountains.滿It frightened the people throughout the whole city, so that every household burned incense and every family burned paper offerings.:「。」Sun Wukong called out loudly, "Old Deng, watch carefully for me — any officials corrupt and law-breaking, any sons rebellious and unfilial — strike down a good many of them dead as a warning to all." The thunder then rumbled forth even more violently.

Wukong then pointed the iron cudgel upward once more.Just see:

This rain began falling from the hour of Chen, and continued falling until around the hour of Wu;it poured until, inside and outside the city of Cheliguo, the water flooded over the streets and thoroughfares.

:「The king issued a decree, saying, "Enough rain, enough rain;。」:「。」if it goes on much longer it will drown and ruin the crops, and that would be no good thing." The duty officer beneath the Five Phoenix Tower spurred his horse and braved the rain to come report, "Holy monk, there's enough rain now." Hearing this, Wukong pointed the gold-banded cudgel upward once again. In an instant, the thunder withdrew, the wind died down, the rain dispersed, and the clouds gathered back in.滿:「The king was filled with joy, and all the civil and military officials praised him together, saying, "What a fine monk!』。This is truly a case of 'beyond the strong, there is one even stronger.'便Even when our Royal Preceptor prays for rain effectively, if he wants clear skies, a fine drizzle still keeps falling for half a day, and it never turns properly clear.?」How is it that this monk can bring clear skies the instant he wishes it, with the bright sun bursting out in a moment and not a cloud left for ten thousand miles?"

The king ordered the royal carriage to return, meaning to stamp and exchange the travel rescript and send Tang Seng on his way.:「。」:「Just as he was about to apply the royal seal, the three Daoists again stepped forward to stop him, saying, "Your Majesty, this rain was not the monk's doing at all — it was still the power of our Daoist school." The king said, "You just said the Dragon Kings were not at home and so there was no rain;?」:「yet he went up and prayed through quiet cultivation, and the rain came down — so why are you now contesting the credit with him?" Tiger Strength Immortal said, "I mounted the altar, dispatched documents, burned talismans and proclamations, and struck the command tablet — which Dragon King would dare not come?I suspect they had been summoned elsewhere, so the five offices of wind, cloud, thunder, and rain were all absent; the moment they heard my command, they rushed here, and it just happened that as I stepped down he went up, and he chanced upon this opportunity at that very moment — that is why it rained.?」Reckoned from the root of the matter, it was still I who summoned the dragons and brought down the rain — how can it be counted as his achievement?" The king, confused, hearing these words, grew uncertain once more.

:「Wukong stepped forward and, pressing his palms together, addressed the king, saying, "Your Majesty, these side-door sorceries amount to no real achievement at all, and cannot be counted as mine or his.退At this very moment the Dragon Kings of the Four Seas are still present in the sky; since this monk has not yet dismissed them, they dare not withdraw hastily.。」:「If the Royal Preceptor can call the Dragon Kings to show themselves, then it shall count as his achievement." The king was delighted and said, "In the twenty-three years I have been emperor, I have never yet seen what a living dragon looks like.Let both sides display your powers — it matters not whether monk or Daoist; whichever of you can call one forth shall have the credit;。」whichever cannot shall be at fault." Now how could that Daoist possibly have such ability?Even if he called, the Dragon Kings, seeing the Great Sage present, would not dare show themselves anyway.:「。」The Daoist said, "We are unable — you go ahead and call them."

:「The Great Sage then raised his face toward the sky and called out sternly in a loud voice, "Ao Guang, where are you?。」Brothers, all of you show your true forms so that they may be seen." Hearing the call, the Dragon Kings hastily revealed their true forms — four dragons. In midair they passed through mist and threaded through clouds, dancing and flying above the Hall of Golden Bells.Just see:

The king burned incense there in the hall, and all the ministers and nobles bowed in worship before the steps.:「The king said, "I have troubled your honored persons to descend here; please return now.。」:「。」I shall hold a service of thanksgiving another day." Wukong said, "You gods, each return to your places; this king will offer a service of thanks another day." The Dragon Kings then returned straight to the sea, and all the gods each went back to Heaven. This is truly:

In the end, it is not yet known how the evil will be driven out; listen to the explanation given in the next chapter.

What it’s about

Still disguised as the Three Pure Ones, Wukong and his brothers answer the Daoists' prayers with hidden voices. They promise holy water, then urinate into vessels lowered behind the altar; the delighted preceptors taste it before recognizing the fraud. The disciples reveal themselves and escape, leaving the humiliated trio determined to expose Tripitaka when the pilgrims appear at court the next morning to request passage papers.

At court the king delays the pilgrims because the countryside urgently needs rain. Tiger-Power challenges Tripitaka to a contest, confident that his registers, talismans and sword can command the weather. Wukong secretly ascends to intercept the wind, cloud, thunder and rain officials whom the Daoist has summoned, ordering them to withhold their work until he gives signals from below. Tripitaka then takes the ritual platform, and Wukong coordinates a perfect storm in answer to the monk's prayer.

When it was written 背景

The Cart-Slow satire moves here from private temple comedy to public competition over who can benefit the kingdom. Its joke is not that supernatural weather officials are unreal: Tiger-Power truly has access to them, but Wukong outranks his instructions and transfers the visible result to Tripitaka. Learners should follow the shift between lofty ritual language and bodily humor, then watch for the signals that connect earth and heaven during the rain contest. The episode exposes how easily technical efficacy, moral worth and political legitimacy become confused at court.
