At the Cart-Slow Kingdom the Monks Are Oppressed by Taoist Immortals

044Chapter 44

A poem says:

西The story goes that, thanks to the dragon prince's subduing of the demon and the Black River god's opening of the way, Tang Sanzang and his disciples were able to cross the Black River, and finding the main road, they went straight on toward the west.Truly they faced the wind and braved the snow, journeying by moonlight and starlight, wearing the moon and cloaked in stars. After traveling a good long while, it came once more to be the season of early spring.Behold:

As master and disciples journeyed along the road, admiring the scenery and letting their horse amble slowly, they suddenly heard a great shout, exactly like the roaring cry of a thousand or ten thousand men.:「?」:「。」:「。」:「。」:「。」Tang Sanzang's heart filled with fear, and he reined in his horse, unable to go forward; anxiously he turned his head and said, "Wukong, where is such a din coming from?" Bajie said, "It sounds just like the earth splitting and mountains collapsing." Sha Seng said, "It's also just like thunder and lightning crashing." Sanzang said, "No, it is men shouting and horses neighing." Sun Xingzhe laughed and said, "None of you have guessed it. Wait a moment, and let old Monkey go see what it is."

Splendid Xingzhe—with one leap of his body he trod on cloud-light and rose into the air; opening his eyes to look about, he saw in the distance a walled city.Looking closer still, he found only faint auspicious light hovering about it, and saw no sign of ominous, ill-omened vapor.:「Xingzhe murmured to himself, "What a fine place—why then is there such an ear-splitting noise??」There are no banners or halberds in that city, nor is it the sound of cannon fire—why then does it sound like a clamor of men and horses?" As he was pondering in doubt, he saw outside the city gate a stretch of open sandy ground, where a great crowd of monks was gathered together, hauling a cart.」,It turned out they were all crying out together in a work chant, shouting in unison, "Great Strength King Bodhisattva!"—and it was this that had startled Tang Seng.

Xingzhe gradually lowered his cloud to look more closely, and—ah!That cart was loaded with nothing but bricks, tiles, timber, and unbaked clay bricks. The slope at the head of the sandbank was extremely steep, and there was besides a narrow path running between two ridges, with two great passes. The road below the passes was all sheer, wall-like cliffs—how could such a cart ever be hauled up?Although the weather was mild and warm, those men wore ragged, tattered clothes, and looked utterly wretched and hard-pressed.:「。」Xingzhe wondered to himself, "This must be for repairing and building a temple. Since the harvests here are abundant, they must be unable to find hired laborers, and so these monks are toiling at it themselves." While he was still puzzling over this, unresolved, he saw two young Daoist priests come swaggering out through the city gate.Look at how they were dressed.Behold them:

When the monks saw the Daoists coming, every one of them trembled with fear and redoubled their efforts, straining bitterly to haul the cart.:「Xingzhe understood at once: "Ah!These monks must be afraid of those Daoists;otherwise, why would they strain so hard to pull?西I have heard people say that somewhere along the road to the West there is a place that honors Daoism and destroys Buddhism—surely this must be it.I meant to go back and report to my master, but the matter is not yet clear, and if I go back now it will only earn me his blame, saying that a sharp fellow like me could not even find out the plain truth.。」Better to go down first and find out clearly, so I can report properly to my master."

Now, whom do you suppose he went to ask?:「。」:「?」:「Splendid Great Sage—he brought his cloud down, went to the foot of the city wall, shook himself, and transformed into a wandering Daoist priest of the clouds and streams, a basket of water and fire hanging on his left arm, beating a fisherman's drum in his hand and chanting a Daoist ballad; he approached the city gate, and going up to meet the two Daoists, bowed before them and said, "Reverend sirs, this poor priest greets you." The Daoists returned the bow and said, "Master, where do you come from?" Xingzhe said, "This disciple wanders the corners of the sea, drifts to the ends of the earth.Today I have come to this place, hoping to beg alms from good families.May I ask you two reverend sirs: which street in this city favors the Dao?Which lane esteems the worthy?。」:「?」:「?」:「?」:「?」:「This poor priest would like to go there to beg a meal." The Daoist laughed and said, "Master, why do you say such a dispiriting thing?" Xingzhe said, "How is it dispiriting?" The Daoist said, "You wish to beg a meal—is that not a poor prospect?" Xingzhe said, "One who has left the household relies on begging for a living; if I do not beg for food, how could I have money to buy any?" The Daoist laughed and said, "You are from far away, and do not know the affairs of this city of ours.。」In this city of ours, let alone that the civil and military officials favor the Dao, and the wealthy elders love the worthy, and that men and women both young and old, upon seeing us, bow and invite us to receive offerings—that hardly needs mentioning at all—but first and foremost, His Majesty the King himself favors the Dao and loves the worthy."

:「Xingzhe said, "This poor priest is, first, young in years, and second, newly arrived from afar, and truly does not know of this.。」:「Might I trouble you two reverend sirs to tell me in detail the name of this place, and the story of how the King favors the Dao and loves the worthy—that would truly show the fellowship between us as brothers of the same faith." The Daoist said, "This city is called Cheche Kingdom. :「?」:「The King upon the jeweled throne is related to us by kinship." Hearing this, Xingzhe laughed heartily and said, "I suppose some Daoist has become the emperor?" He said, "No.It is only that twenty years ago, the people suffered a great drought—not a drop of rain fell from the sky, and the grain seedlings in the earth all withered—and regardless of ruler or subject, commoner or noble, great household or small, every family bathed and burned incense, every household bowed to Heaven begging for rain.。」 :「?」:「Just when all were hanging upside down, at the very brink of death, suddenly three Immortal Elders descended from Heaven to save the living creatures below." Xingzhe asked, "Who were these three Immortal Elders?" The Daoist said, "They are none other than our own masters." Xingzhe said, "What are your honored masters' titles?" The Daoist said, "My eldest master is titled Tiger-Strength Great Immortal, my second master Deer-Strength Great Immortal, and my third master Sheep-Strength Great Immortal." Xingzhe asked, "How much magical power do these three honored masters have?" The Daoist said, "My masters can summon wind and call rain merely by turning over a palm;they can point at water and turn it to oil, touch stone and turn it to gold, and it is as easy to them as turning around.。」Because they possess such power, able to seize the very workings of Heaven and Earth and shift the hidden mechanisms of the stars, the ruler and his ministers hold them in the highest respect, and so they became related to us by marriage."

:「Xingzhe said, "This emperor is truly a man of great fortune.:『。』As the saying goes, 'Skill moves even the ministers of the court.' Since your honored masters have such powers, it is only right that a kinship should be formed with them—he has certainly not been cheated by it.Ai!?」:「I wonder whether this poor priest has some small thread of fate that might allow him to see your honored masters' faces just once?" The Daoist laughed and said, "If you wish to see my masters, what difficulty could there be?。」:「。」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「?」:「We two are his disciples closest to his heart and flesh, and besides, our master favors the Dao and loves the worthy—no sooner does he hear the single word 'Dao' spoken than he comes out to greet the guest even at the main gate; if we two were to introduce you in, it would be as easy as blowing away ash." Xingzhe made a deep bow and said, "Many thanks for your recommendation—let us go in at once, then." The Daoist said, "Wait a little while yet. Sit here, and let us two finish our official business, and then we will go in with you." Xingzhe said, "One who has left the household is bound by nothing and free and unfettered—what official business could you have?" The Daoist pointed his hand at the monks on the sandy flat: "Those men are doing work for our household; fearing they might shirk and idle, we are going over to call their roll, and will be right back." Xingzhe laughed and said, "Reverend sirs, you are mistaken. Both monks and Daoists alike are people who have left their households—why should they do labor in our stead, and submit to our roll call?" The Daoist said, "You do not know.Long ago, at the time of praying for rain, the monks prayed to the Buddha on one side, and the Daoists reported to the Dipper on the other, and both sides drew rations from the court.Who would have known that the monks were useless, chanting their sutras in vain, unable to accomplish anything?Later, as soon as my master arrived, he summoned rain and called wind, and delivered the myriad people from their suffering. This so enraged the court against the monks, saying that they were useless, that their temple gates were torn down, their Buddha images destroyed, their ordination certificates confiscated, and they were not allowed to return home, but were bestowed by imperial decree upon our household to do labor, treated just like servant boys.In my household, the one who tends the fire is one of them, the one who sweeps the floor is one of them, and the one who guards the gate is one of them too.Because there is still housing to be built at the back, not yet completed, these monks are made to haul brick and tile, drag timber, and raise up the buildings.。」We fear only that they may be lazy and shirk their work and refuse to pull the cart, and so we two are going to check on them and take a count."

:「。」:「?」:「。」:「?」:「Hearing this, Xingzhe took hold of the Daoist's sleeve and said with tears falling, "I say I have no such fortune—truly I have no such fortune, that I cannot see my honored master's face." The Daoist said, "How is it you cannot see him?" Xingzhe said, "This poor priest wanders the corners of the earth, first for the sake of my own life and livelihood, and second also in search of a kinsman." The Daoist asked, "What kinsman do you have?" Xingzhe said, "I have an uncle who, since childhood, left home and shaved his head to become a monk.In years past, when there was famine, he too came out to beg in the world beyond.便For these several years he has not returned home, and mindful of the kindness of our ancestors, I have come especially, taking the chance, to search for him.I suspect he may be detained and delayed in some such place as this, unable to free himself—though I cannot be sure.。」:「However I manage to find him and see him just once, only then can I go into the city with you." The Daoist said, "Why, that is easy enough.便Let the two of us sit here, and might I trouble you to go over to the sandbank in our stead and take the roll—there should be five hundred men in the headcount, no more—and see among them which one is your honored uncle.?」If indeed he is there, then out of regard for our fellowship in the faith, we shall let him go—and then you can come into the city with us. How would that be?"

Xingzhe thanked him profusely, made a deep bow, took his leave of the Daoist, and, beating his fisherman's drum, went straight to the sandy flat.:「。」:「Passing through the double pass, he came down through the narrow ridge path, and the monks all fell to their knees at once, kowtowing and saying, "Grandfather, we have not been idle in the least—all five hundred, not one missing, are here pulling the cart." Seeing this, Xingzhe laughed inwardly, "These monks have been beaten into such terror by the Daoists that even at the sight of me, a fake Daoist, they are this frightened.。」:「If I were truly a real Daoist, they surely could not go on living at all." Xingzhe waved his hand and said, "Do not kneel, do not be afraid.。」I am not here to oversee your work—I have come here to search for a kinsman." When the monks heard him speak of searching for a kinsman, they crowded around him in a circle, each pushing forward to show his face, clearing his throat and coughing loudly, every one hoping desperately to be the one recognized.:「。」They said, "We don't know which of us might be his kinsman." Xingzhe looked them over for a while, and then burst out laughing.:「?」:「The monks said, "Old master, you have not recognized any kinsman—why then do you laugh?" Xingzhe said, "Do you know what I am laughing at?I am laughing that you monks are all so ill-favored.When your parents gave birth to you, it was because your fate was cursed under the Canopy Star, bringing harm to father or mother, or because you would not get along with brothers and sisters, that they gave you up entirely and sent you into the monkhood.使?」:「Why then do you not honor the Three Jewels, nor revere the Buddha's Law, nor go to read the sutras and perform penances, but instead work as hired labor for Daoists, made to serve as slaves and servants?" The monks said, "Old master, you have come to shame us.。」:「。」Your reverence must be from outside these parts, and does not know how things stand here." Xingzhe said, "Indeed I am from outside, and truly do not know what dangers there are here."

The monks said with tears falling, "The King of this country of ours is biased and unjust—he delights only in men of your reverence's kind, and is angered at us sons of the Buddha." Xingzhe said, "How did this come about?" The monks said, "It is only because, through summoning wind and calling rain, three Immortal Elders came to this place and destroyed us, deceiving and winning the King's trust; they tore down our temples, confiscated our ordination certificates, would not let us return home, nor allowed us to fill any other post or duty, but gave us over to be used by those Immortal Elders' household—our suffering is unbearable.Whenever any wandering Daoist arrives here, he is at once invited to bow before the King and receive rewards;。」:「but if a monk comes, no matter whether from near or far, he is seized at once and given to the Immortal Elders' household as a laborer." Xingzhe said, "There must be some other clever art those Daoists possess, to have so beguiled the King;?」:「for if it were only summoning wind and calling rain, that is merely a minor art of the side gates—how could that alone move the King's heart?" The monks said, "They know how to knead sand and refine mercury, to sit in meditation and preserve the spirit, to point at water and turn it to oil, to touch stone and turn it to gold;。」and now they are raising a great Sanqing temple hall, where day and night they read scriptures and perform penances before Heaven and Earth, praying that the King may live ten thousand years without growing old—and so they have bewitched and moved the King's heart."

:「Xingzhe said, "So that is how it is.便。」:「Then you should all simply run away." The monks said, "Old master, we cannot get away. Those Immortal Elders petitioned the King and had our likenesses painted, and they are hung up on display everywhere, far and wide, without cease. The territory of this Cheche Kingdom is quite vast, and in every prefecture, department, county, village, and market town there hangs a portrait of a monk, with an inscription written in the King's own imperial hand.If a man holding office captures a monk, he is promoted three ranks;if a man without office captures a monk, he is rewarded with fifty taels of silver—and so there is no escaping.禿Let alone monks—even men with cropped hair, bald heads, or thinning hair find it hard to escape. On every side there are many bailiffs, and informants are everywhere, so no matter what you do, escape is difficult.。」We have no choice but to endure our suffering here."

:「Xingzhe said, "Since that is so, then you should simply die." The monks said, "Old master, some indeed have died. Those captured from everywhere and brought together with the monks of this place number more than two thousand in all.Once here, unable to endure the bitter hardship, unable to bear the torment, unable to withstand the cold, unable to adjust to the water and soil, six or seven hundred have died of it, and seven or eight hundred have taken their own lives.。」:「?」:「Only we five hundred here cannot manage to die." Xingzhe said, "How is it you cannot die?" The monks said, "If we hang ourselves from a beam, the rope snaps; if we cut our throats with a knife, it does not hurt;。」:「。」:「those who throw themselves into the river float up and do not sink, and those who swallow poison find their bodies unharmed and unhurt." Xingzhe said, "Why, you are truly fortunate—Heaven has granted you all long life." The monks said, "Old master, ah, you are missing one word—it is 'long-suffering,' not long life.We eat three meals a day, but they are nothing but thin gruel boiled from coarse, unhulled rice.At night we settle down to sleep exposed to the dew right there on the sandy flat.。」:「?」:「No sooner do we close our eyes than divine beings come to protect us." Xingzhe said, "I suppose you are so worn out with suffering that you are seeing ghosts?" The monks said, "They are not ghosts, but the Six Ding and Six Jia spirits, and the Guardians of the Faith.Every night without fail, they come to protect us.。」:「Whenever one of us tries to die, they hold him back and will not let him die." Xingzhe said, "These gods, indeed, act quite unreasonably.?」:「西They ought simply to let you die early and be reborn early in Heaven—why come instead to protect you like this?" The monks said, "In our dreams they counsel and comfort us, telling us not to seek death, but to endure our suffering a while longer, and wait for the holy monk of the Great Tang of the Eastern Land, an Arhat journeying to the Western Heaven to fetch the scriptures.Under him he has a disciple, the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, whose divine powers are vast and boundless, who holds firmly to a heart of loyalty and goodness, who sets right the injustices of the human world, aids the distressed and upholds the endangered, and shows compassion for orphans and widows.。」We need only wait for him to come and display his divine powers, destroy the Daoists, and restore honor to your Buddhist monkhood and its teachings."

:「。」Hearing this, Xingzhe laughed to himself inwardly: "Don't say that old Monkey has no skill—the divine ones have already spread my fame in advance." He quickly took his leave, and beating his fisherman's drum, parted from the monks and went straight to the city gate, where he met the Daoists again.:「?」:「。」:「?」:「The Daoists came to meet him and said, "Master, which one is your kinsman?" Xingzhe said, "All five hundred of them are kin to me." The two Daoists laughed and said, "How can you possibly have so many kinsmen?" Xingzhe said, "One hundred are my neighbors to the left, one hundred are my neighbors to the right, one hundred belong to my father's clan, one hundred belong to my mother's clan, and one hundred are my sworn friends.便If you are willing to release all five hundred of them, I will go in with you;。」:「if you will not release them, then I shall not go." The Daoist said, "I think you must have some fit of madness, to be talking such nonsense all of a sudden. Those monks were bestowed by imperial decree of the King himself; even to release one or two of them, we would first have to file a report of illness with our master, and then follow it up with a death certificate, before the matter could be settled—how then could you speak of releasing them all? This makes no sense at all, none at all.使Not to mention that our household would then have no one to command—even the court itself would hold him to blame.?」:「?」:「!」The local elder might send an official to investigate, or at times the royal carriage itself might come in person to check the roll—how then would we dare release them?" Xingzhe said, "You will not release them?" The Daoist said, "I will not!" Xingzhe asked three times in a row, and then flew into a rage; he drew the iron rod from his ear, twirled it once against the wind until it grew as thick as a rice bowl, gave it a shake, and swung it straight across the Daoist's face.漿Alas, with that blow his head was broken and streaming with blood, his body fell to the ground, his skin split open, his neck was broken, and his brains spilled out.

The monks on the sandbank, seeing from a distance that he had struck down and killed two Daoists, abandoned the cart and came running up, crying, "This is terrible, this is terrible—he has struck down a kinsman of the imperial family!" Xingzhe said, "Which one was a kinsman of the imperial family?" The monks surrounded him in a fan-shaped ring and said, "Their master, when he goes up before the throne, need not bow to the King, and when he leaves the hall, need not take leave of his lord—the court always addresses him as 'Elder Brother National Preceptor.'How could you come here and cause such disaster? His disciples came out only to oversee our labor, and had nothing to do with you—how could you go and beat them to death? That Immortal Elder will not say that you were the one who struck them down—he will only say that we, while they were here overseeing our work, took their lives ourselves—what then will become of us?。」:「We had better take you into the city now, to settle this matter of manslaughter." Xingzhe laughed and said, "Gentlemen, do not clamor.。」:「?」:「。」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「?」:「I am not truly a wandering Daoist of the clouds and streams—I have come here to save you." The monks said, "You have gone and killed men, and brought harm upon us, adding to our burdens—how is that saving us?" Xingzhe said, "I am Sun Wukong Xingzhe, disciple of the holy monk of the Great Tang, and I have come here especially to save your lives." The monks said, "No, no, that is not so—we know that old master by sight." Xingzhe said, "But you have never even met him—how could you know him?" The monks said, "In our dreams we have often seen an old man who called himself the Great White Planet, who often instructed us, and told us what Sun Xingzhe looks like, so that we would not mistake him for someone else." Xingzhe said, "What did he tell you about him?" The monks said, "He said of that Great Sage:

Hearing this, Xingzhe felt both anger and delight.:「!」:「。」:「Delighted, he said, "So he has been spreading old Monkey's fame for me!" Angered, he said, "That old rascal is so careless, telling my true form to this crowd of mortals." Then all at once he blurted out, "Gentlemen, indeed you are right that I am not Sun Xingzhe—I am but a disciple of Sun Xingzhe's, come here to learn how to stir up trouble for sport.?」Isn't that Sun Xingzhe coming over there?" He pointed with his hand toward the east, and tricked the monks into turning their heads to look, whereupon he revealed his true form.:「Only then did the monks recognize him, and one after another they fell prostrate before him, saying, "Grandfather, we, with our mortal frames and fleshly eyes, did not know that it was Grandfather manifesting himself before us.。」:「。」We beg Grandfather to avenge our wrongs and dispel our misfortune, and to enter the city soon to vanquish the evil and restore the right." Xingzhe said, "All of you follow me for now." The monks pressed close behind him on every side.

The Great Sage went straight to the sandy flat, and using his divine power, pulled the cart over both passes and through the narrow ridge path, then lifted it up and dashed it to pieces. He flung all the bricks and timber down the slope.:「He shouted at the monks: "Scatter, don't stay near my hands and feet.。」:「Wait until I see the emperor tomorrow, and I'll destroy those Daoist priests." The monks said, "Grandfather!。」:「。」We dare not flee far, but we fear that if the officials catch us and bring us back, we'll again be forced to pay ransom money, bringing more disaster upon ourselves." Wukong said, "In that case, I'll give you a spell to protect yourselves." The splendid Great Sage plucked a handful of hairs, chewed them into fine bits, and gave each monk a piece.:「He told them all: "Pinch it under the nail of your ring finger, clench your fist, and just go on your way.便If no one dares to seize you, that's fine;。」:「?」:「。」:「!」but if someone does seize you, clench your fist tight and cry out 'Great Sage Equaling Heaven,' and I will come to protect you." The monks said, "Grandfather, what if we go far away, out of your sight, and you don't answer our call — what then?" Wukong said, "Just set your mind at ease. Even at ten thousand miles' distance, I can keep you entirely safe." Among the monks, one bold enough clenched his fist and quietly called out, "Great Sage Equaling Heaven!" and at once a Thunder God appeared standing before him, iron cudgel in hand — not even a thousand troops and ten thousand horses could get near him.At that moment several hundred of them called out together, and there were fully several hundred Great Sages standing guard.:「。」:「。」」,The monks kowtowed and said, "Grandfather, it truly works wonders!" Wukong further instructed them: "Call out the word 'Still,' and I'll take it back." Sure enough, when they called out "Still," it was once again just a hair tucked in the crease of their fingernail.Only then, overjoyed at having a way to save their lives, did the monks all scatter together.:「。」西西Wukong said, "Don't flee too far — listen for news from me in the city. As soon as a notice recruiting monks is posted, come into the city and return my hairs to me." The five hundred monks, some going east, some going west, some walking, some standing, scattered in all directions; no more of them for now.

Now to tell of Tang Seng, who, waiting by the roadside and unable to get word back from Wukong, had Zhu Bajie lead the horse westward, where they encountered some monks fleeing. As they neared the city wall, they saw Wukong still there with a dozen or so monks who had not yet scattered.:「?」Sanzang reined in his horse and said, "Wukong, how is it that you went to find out about that noise and were gone so long without returning?" Wukong brought the dozen or so monks forward, and they paid their respects before Tang Seng's horse, and he related the whole affair from the start.:「?」:「Sanzang was greatly alarmed and said, "If that's how things are, what are we to do?" The dozen or so monks said, "Rest easy, my lord. Grandfather Sun the Great Sage is a heavenly god come down to earth, with vast magical powers, and he will surely keep you safe.We are monks of the imperially built Zhiyuan Temple in this city.Because this temple was built by the former king, the founding emperor, and his sacred image is still enshrined within, it has not yet been torn down. All the temples in the city, large and small, have been torn down.。」:「。」We beg my lord to hurry into the city early and lodge at our humble mountain temple; by tomorrow's morning court, the Great Sage Sun will surely have a plan." Wukong said, "What you say is right. Very well, let's hurry into the city while there's still time.

Only then did the elder dismount, and they walked to beneath the city gate.西By this time the sun had already set in the west. They crossed the drawbridge and passed through three layers of gates; the people on the street, seeing the monks of Zhiyuan Temple leading the horse and carrying the luggage, all made way to avoid them.As they were walking along, they arrived before the mountain gate.」。They saw hanging high above the gate a large plaque with gold characters reading "Imperially Built Zhiyuan Temple. The monks pushed the door open, passed through the Hall of the Vajra Guardians, and opened the door of the main hall.Tang Seng took out his cassock and put it on, bowed before the golden image, and only then entered.:「。」:「?」:「?」:「The monks called out, "Caretaker!" An old monk came out, and upon seeing Wukong, immediately bowed and said, "Grandfather, you have come?" Wukong said, "How do you know which grandfather I am, that you bow and address me so?" The monk said, "I know you are Grandfather Sun, the Great Sage Equaling Heaven. We have seen you in our dreams every night. The Great White Planet has often come to us in dreams, telling us that only when you came would our lives be spared.Today, seeing your honored face in person, it is truly no different from in the dreams.Grandfather! How fortunate that you came so soon;。」:「had you delayed one or two more days, we would all have become ghosts." Wukong laughed and said, "Please rise, please rise.。」Tomorrow all will become clear." The monks prepared a vegetarian meal, and master and disciples ate it.宿They swept the abbot's chamber clean and settled in for the night's rest.

Around the second watch, the Great Sage Sun, with something on his mind, simply could not fall asleep, and he heard the sound of pipes and drums somewhere.穿Quietly he got up, put on his clothes, and leapt into the air to look around — it turned out that due south, lanterns and candles were blazing brightly.Lowering his cloud to look more closely, he saw it was the Daoist priests of the Sanqing Temple performing a star-placating ritual. He saw this:

Before the hall's door hung a pair of scrolls of yellow damask brocade, embroidered with twenty-two large characters reading: "May the winds be favorable and the rains timely, we pray for the boundless power of the Celestial Worthies;。」鹿May the rivers run clear and the seas be calm, we beseech long years of life for His Majesty." Wukong saw three old Daoist priests wearing ritual robes, and guessed they must be the Immortals Tiger Strength, Deer Strength, and Sheep Strength.Below, there were seven or eight hundred lesser priests attending to the drums and bells, tending the incense and reciting the petitions, all standing in attendance on both sides.:「Wukong secretly delighted and thought, "I'd like to go down and stir things up with them, but a single thread doesn't make a cord, and one hand alone can't clap.。」I'd better go back and fetch Bajie and Sha Seng, so we can come and have some fun together.

He lowered his auspicious cloud and went straight to the abbot's chamber. It turned out that Bajie and Sha Seng were sleeping foot to foot.:「?」:「。」 Wukong first called Wujing. Sha Monk woke up and said, "Brother, haven't you gone to sleep yet?" Wukong said, "Get up — let's go enjoy ourselves a bit." Sha Seng said, "In the dead of night, with dry mouths and heavy eyes, what enjoyment could there be?" Wukong said, "There really is a Sanqing Temple in this city, where the Daoist priests are holding a ritual, and on the Sanqing Hall there are many offerings: steamed buns as big as pecks, fried pastries fifty or sixty catties apiece, countless side dishes, and fresh fruit.。」 Let's go enjoy it together." Zhu Bajie, hearing in his sleep talk of good food to eat, woke up at once and said, "Brother, won't you take me along too?" Wukong said, "Brother, if you want to eat, don't shout and yell and wake up Master — just follow me, both of you.

The two of them threw on their clothes and quietly slipped out the door, following Wukong onto the clouds, and leapt up into the air. When the idiot saw the lantern light, he wanted to move in at once.:「。」:「?」:「。」便殿Wukong pulled him back and said, "Don't be in such a hurry — wait until they've dispersed, then we can go down." Bajie said, "They've only just gotten into the swing of their chanting — why would they be willing to disperse?" Wukong said, "Wait till I work a little trick, and they'll disperse." The splendid Great Sage formed a hand seal, recited a spell, drew a breath from the southeast direction, and blew it out with a puff — instantly a fierce gust of wind swept straight into the Sanqing Hall, knocking over the flower vases, candlesticks, and the merit banners hanging on the four walls all at once, so that the lamps and candles went dark. The Daoist priests were struck with fear, their hearts pounding.:「The Immortal Tiger Strength said, "Disciples, let us disperse for now. This gust of divine wind that just passed has blown out the lamps, candles, incense, and flowers.。」退Each of you return to your beds, and rise early tomorrow morning to chant a few more scrolls of scripture to make up the count." The Daoist priests accordingly withdrew, each to his own quarters.

Wukong then led Bajie and Sha Seng, lowering their clouds, and burst into the Sanqing Hall. The idiot, not caring whether it was raw or cooked, grabbed a fried pastry and opened his mouth to gnaw at it.便Wukong drew out his iron cudgel and struck at him with it.:「。」:「。」:「西Bajie snatched back his hand and dodged, saying, "I haven't even tasted what it's like, and already you're hitting me!" Wukong said, "Don't act so petty and low-class — let's observe some manners and sit down properly to enjoy it." Bajie said, "How shameless — stealing food to eat, and still insisting on manners!?」:「?」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「。」:「。」If we'd been properly invited, what would we do then?" Wukong said, "Who are those bodhisattvas sitting up there?" Bajie laughed and said, "You can't even recognize the Three Purities, and instead take them for some bodhisattvas." Wukong said, "Which Three Purities are they?" Bajie said, "The one in the middle is the Celestial Worthy of Primordial Beginning, the one on the left is the Lord of Numinous Treasure, and the one on the right is the Supreme Lord Lao." Wukong said, "We'll have to transform ourselves into that same appearance before we can eat in peace." The idiot, growing impatient at the smell of the fragrant offerings and eager to eat, climbed up onto the high platform and shoved Lord Lao off with a nudge of his snout, saying, "Old sir, you've sat here long enough — let old Pig sit for a while." Bajie transformed into the Supreme Lord Lao, Wukong transformed into the Celestial Worthy of Primordial Beginning, and Sha Seng transformed into the Lord of Numinous Treasure. They pushed the original statues all down off the platform.

As soon as they sat down, Bajie grabbed at the big steamed buns to eat.:「。」 Wukong said, "Don't be in such a hurry." Bajie said, "Brother, having transformed like this, what are we waiting for if not to eat?" Wukong said, "Brother, eating is a small matter, but letting slip the secrets of Heaven is a serious one. These sacred images have all been pushed down onto the floor — if some early-rising priest comes to strike the bell and sweep the floor and trips over one of them, won't that give the whole thing away?。」:「?」:「You'd better hide them somewhere out of the way." Bajie said, "This place is unfamiliar to me — I can't even find the door. Where would I hide them?" Wukong said, "When I first came in just now, there was a small side door down to the right; a foul stench was overpowering inside — it must be a place for the 'transmigration of the five grains.'。」Take them and dump them there.

The idiot, having some brute strength, jumped down, hoisted the three sacred images onto his shoulders, and carried them out. When he got there, he kicked the door open to look, and found it was in fact a large privy.:「』。」He laughed and said, "This Bimawen really does have a glib tongue — he's even given a fancy Daoist name to an outhouse, calling it the 'Place of Transmigration of the Five Grains.'" The idiot, still carrying them on his shoulder without dumping them yet, muttered a prayer under his breath, gurgling and mumbling:

When he finished his prayer, he flung them in with a splash, splattering half his robe front with foul water, then went back up to the hall.

:「Wukong said, "Did you hide them well?" Bajie said, "Hidden well enough, but some water splashed up and dirtied my clothes — there's a bit of a filthy stench, so don't be disgusted by me." Wukong laughed and said, "Very well, come and enjoy the food.。」Though I wonder whether you'll ever get a clean body out of this whole affair." The idiot, still transformed into Lord Lao, sat down along with the other two, and they all feasted to their hearts' content.First they ate the big steamed buns, then the arranged platters, the side dishes, the pastries, the flat cakes, the ingot-cakes, the fried foods, and the steamed crisps — paying no mind at all to whether things were hot or cold, eating just as they pleased. As it happened, Sun Wukong did not much care for cooked food, and only ate a few pieces of fruit to keep the other two company. That meal went like a shooting star chasing the moon, like a wind sweeping away the last clouds — they ate until everything was gone, and there was nothing left to eat.Even then they did not leave, but lingered there chatting idly, letting their food settle and amusing themselves.

Ah!Such things do happen.:「殿。」:「。」 It so happened that a young Daoist under the east corridor had just lain down to sleep when he suddenly got up, saying, "I forgot my hand bell in the hall — if it's lost, tomorrow my master will scold me." He said to the one sleeping beside him, "You go on sleeping, I'll go look for it." In his haste he didn't put on his underclothes, but merely threw on a long robe, and went straight to the main hall to search for the bell.Feeling about here and there, he found the bell.Just as he was about to turn back, he suddenly heard the sound of breathing.Frightened, the priest quickly hurried toward the door, but somehow he stepped on a lychee pit and slipped, falling with a thud. With a clang, the bell shattered to pieces in the fall.Zhu Bajie could not hold back and burst out laughing.:「。」 :「?」殿The fright scared three of the young priest's souls clean out of him and sent his seven spirits reeling; stumbling at every step, he rushed to outside the abbot's chamber, pounded on the door, and cried, "Grand-master, something's wrong, disaster's struck!" The three old priests had not yet gone to sleep, and at once opened the door to ask, "What disaster?" Trembling all over, he said, "Disciple lost his hand bell, and went to the hall to look for it, when suddenly I heard someone laughing loudly — it nearly scared me to death." Upon hearing this, the old priest at once called out, "Bring lamps! Let's see what evil thing this is!" At this single command, the priests of the two corridors were roused, and old and young alike scrambled up to light lamps and torches, and went to look at the main hall.

What exactly happened is not yet known; listen to the explanation given in the next chapter.

What it’s about

The travelers enter the Cart-Slow Kingdom and hear the cries of Buddhist monks forced to haul timber under brutal Daoist overseers. Wukong learns that three royal preceptors—Tiger-Power, Deer-Power and Antelope-Power Immortals—won the king's favor by bringing rain during a drought, then persuaded him to suppress Buddhism. He frees the laborers, gives them courage by announcing Tripitaka's arrival, and sends the overseers fleeing after a comic beating.

That night Wukong, Bajie and Sha Wujing enter the Three Pure Ones Temple, where the three preceptors are holding a grand offering. The disciples eat the food laid before the statues, throw the images into a privy, and take their places in disguise upon the altar. When the returning Daoists discover that their offerings have vanished, they assume the gods themselves consumed them and beg the silent counterfeit deities for a revelation.

When it was written 背景

This 回 opens the Cart-Slow Kingdom sequence, an extended satire of religious rivalry in which court patronage has made one tradition powerful enough to persecute another. The suffering monks establish real stakes before the disciples answer solemn oppression with temple farce. Learners should distinguish the three animal spirits behind their grand titles and notice that their ability to summon rain is genuine, even though their moral authority is not. The chapter therefore asks readers to judge religious figures by conduct rather than by costume, official favor or spectacular technique.
