卻說那菩薩念了幾遍，卻才住口，那妖精就不疼了。Now the Bodhisattva chanted the spell several times over, and only when she stopped did the demon's pain cease.又正性起身看處，頸項裡與手足上都是金箍，勒得疼痛，便就除那箍兒時，莫想褪得動分毫。Just as he rose in a temper to look himself over, he found golden bands about his neck and on his wrists and ankles, pinching and aching, and when he tried to strip the bands off, he could not budge them so much as a hair's breadth.這寶貝已此是見肉生根，越抹越痛。This treasure had already taken root in his very flesh — the more he rubbed at it, the more it hurt.行者笑道：「我那乖乖，菩薩恐你養不大，與你戴個頸圈鐲頭哩。」那童子聞此言，又生煩惱，就此綽起槍來，望行者亂刺。Xingzhe laughed and said, "My dear little one, the Bodhisattva feared you'd never grow up properly, so she's fitted you with a collar and bracelets." Hearing this, the boy grew angrier still, snatched up his spear, and thrust wildly at Xingzhe.行者急閃身，立在菩薩後面，叫：「念咒，念咒。」那菩薩將楊柳枝兒蘸了一點甘露，灑將去，叫聲：「合！」只見他丟了槍，一雙手合掌當胸，再也不能開放。Xingzhe swiftly dodged aside and stood behind the Bodhisattva, calling out, "Recite the spell, recite the spell!" The Bodhisattva dipped her willow sprig in a drop of sweet dew, flung it out, and cried, "Close!" At once the boy dropped his spear, his two hands pressed together in front of his chest, and try as he might he could no longer pry them apart.至今留了一個觀音扭，即此意也。To this day there remains a gesture called the "Guanyin clasp," and this is precisely its origin.那童子開不得手，拿不得槍，方知是法力深微，沒奈何，才納頭下拜。Unable to free his hands or grip his spear, the boy at last understood the depth of her power, and having no other choice, he bowed his head to the ground in submission.

却说那菩萨念了几遍，却才住口，那妖精就不疼了。又正性起身看处，颈项里与手足上都是金箍，勒得疼痛，便就除那箍儿时，莫想褪得动分毫。这宝贝已此是见肉生根，越抹越痛。行者笑道：「我那乖乖，菩萨恐你养不大，与你戴个颈圈镯头哩。」那童子闻此言，又生烦恼，就此绰起枪来，望行者乱刺。行者急闪身，立在菩萨后面，叫：「念咒，念咒。」那菩萨将杨柳枝儿蘸了一点甘露，洒将去，叫声：「合！」只见他丢了枪，一双手合掌当胸，再也不能开放。至今留了一个观音扭，即此意也。那童子开不得手，拿不得枪，方知是法力深微，没奈何，才纳头下拜。

菩薩念動真言，把淨瓶攲倒，將那一海水依然收去，更無半點存留。The Bodhisattva recited the true spell and tipped her pure vase, drawing that whole sea of water back into it, until not a single drop remained.對行者道：「悟空，這妖精已是降了，卻只是野心不定。She said to Xingzhe, "Wukong, this demon is now subdued, but his wild heart is not yet settled.等我教他一步一拜，只拜到落伽山，方才收法。Let me have him bow at every step, all the way to Mount Luojia, and only then will I release the spell.你如今快早去洞中，救你師父去來。」行者轉身叩頭道：「有勞菩薩遠涉，弟子當送一程。」菩薩道：「你不消送，恐怕誤了你師父性命。」行者聞言，歡喜叩別。You must hurry now to the cave and rescue your master." Xingzhe turned and kowtowed, saying, "The Bodhisattva has troubled herself to travel so far — your disciple should escort you part of the way." The Bodhisattva said, "There is no need to escort me — I fear it would delay saving your master's life." Hearing this, Xingzhe joyfully bowed farewell.那妖精早歸了正果，五十三參，參拜觀音。The demon had already been set upon the path to true fruition, bowing in homage to Guanyin at all fifty-three stations of worship.

菩萨念动真言，把净瓶攲倒，将那一海水依然收去，更无半点存留。对行者道：「悟空，这妖精已是降了，却只是野心不定。等我教他一步一拜，只拜到落伽山，方才收法。你如今快早去洞中，救你师父去来。」行者转身叩头道：「有劳菩萨远涉，弟子当送一程。」菩萨道：「你不消送，恐怕误了你师父性命。」行者闻言，欢喜叩别。那妖精早归了正果，五十三参，参拜观音。

且不題善菩薩收了童子。For now we need not speak further of how the good Bodhisattva took the boy in.卻說那沙僧久坐林間，盼望行者不到，將行李捎在馬上，一隻手執著降妖寶杖，一隻手牽著韁繩，出松林向南觀看，只見行者欣喜而來。Now to tell of Shaseng, who had sat waiting long in the grove; when he saw that Xingzhe did not return, he loaded the baggage onto the horse, and with the demon-quelling staff in one hand and the reins in the other, came out of the pine grove to look southward, and there he saw Xingzhe coming back full of joy.沙僧迎著道：「哥哥，你怎麼去請菩薩，此時才來？Shaseng went to meet him and said, "Brother, you went to invite the Bodhisattva — why have you only come back now?焦殺我也。」行者道：「你還做夢哩，老孫已請了菩薩，降了妖怪。」行者卻將菩薩的法力，備陳了一遍。You've worried me half to death." Xingzhe said, "You must still be dreaming — old Sun has already invited the Bodhisattva and subdued the demon." And Xingzhe recounted in full the Bodhisattva's display of power.沙僧十分歡喜道：「救師父去也。」Shaseng was overjoyed and said, "Then let us go save our master!"

且不题善菩萨收了童子。却说那沙僧久坐林间，盼望行者不到，将行李捎在马上，一只手执著降妖宝杖，一只手牵著缰绳，出松林向南观看，只见行者欣喜而来。沙僧迎著道：「哥哥，你怎么去请菩萨，此时才来？焦杀我也。」行者道：「你还做梦哩，老孙已请了菩萨，降了妖怪。」行者却将菩萨的法力，备陈了一遍。沙僧十分欢喜道：「救师父去也。」

他兩個才跳過澗去，撞到門前，拴下馬匹。The two of them at once leapt across the ravine, made their way to the gate, and tethered the horse.舉兵器齊打入洞裡，剿淨了群妖，解下皮袋，放出八戒來。Raising their weapons, they fought their way into the cave together, wiped out the remaining demons, untied the leather sack, and let Bajie out.那獃子謝了行者道：「哥哥，那妖精在那裡？The fool thanked Xingzhe and said, "Brother, where is that demon?等我去築他幾鈀，出出氣來。」行者道：「且尋師父去。」Let me go give him a few whacks with my rake to vent my anger." Xingzhe said, "Let's find our master first."

他两个才跳过涧去，撞到门前，拴下马匹。举兵器齐打入洞里，剿净了群妖，解下皮袋，放出八戒来。那呆子谢了行者道：「哥哥，那妖精在那里？等我去筑他几钯，出出气来。」行者道：「且寻师父去。」

三人徑至後邊，只見師父赤條條，綑在院中哭哩。The three of them went straight to the rear, and there they saw their master, stripped bare, bound in the courtyard, weeping.沙僧連忙解繩，行者即取衣服穿上。Shaseng hurried to untie the ropes, while Xingzhe fetched his clothes and helped him dress.三人跪在面前道：「師父吃苦了。」三藏謝道：「賢徒啊，多累你等。The three knelt before him and said, "Master, you have suffered." Sanzang thanked them, saying, "Worthy disciples, I have troubled you all so much.怎生降得妖魔也？」行者又將請菩薩，收童子之言，備陳一遍。How did you manage to subdue the demon?" Xingzhe again recounted in full the story of inviting the Bodhisattva and taking the boy captive.三藏聽得，即忙跪下，朝南禮拜。When Sanzang heard this, he at once knelt and bowed in worship toward the south.行者道：「不消謝他，轉是我們與他作福，收了一個童子。」如今說童子拜觀音，五十三參，參參見佛，即此是也。Xingzhe said, "There's no need to thank her — if anything, it is we who did her a good turn, bringing her a boy attendant." And to this day, when it is told how the boy worships Guanyin at all fifty-three stations, bowing before the Buddha at each one, this is exactly what is meant.

三人径至后边，只见师父赤条条，捆在院中哭哩。沙僧连忙解绳，行者即取衣服穿上。三人跪在面前道：「师父吃苦了。」三藏谢道：「贤徒啊，多累你等。怎生降得妖魔也？」行者又将请菩萨，收童子之言，备陈一遍。三藏听得，即忙跪下，朝南礼拜。行者道：「不消谢他，转是我们与他作福，收了一个童子。」如今说童子拜观音，五十三参，参参见佛，即此是也。

教沙僧將洞內寶物收了。He had Shaseng gather up the treasures within the cave.且尋米糧，安排齋飯，管待了師父。They then sought out rice and grain, prepared a vegetarian meal, and looked after their master.那長老得性命，全虧孫大聖；That the elder monk kept his life owed entirely to Great Sage Sun;取真經，只靠美猴精。That the true scriptures would be won depended solely on the splendid Monkey.

教沙僧将洞内宝物收了。且寻米粮，安排斋饭，管待了师父。那长老得性命，全亏孙大圣；取真经，只靠美猴精。

師徒們出洞來，攀鞍上馬，找大路，篤志投西。Master and disciples came out of the cave, mounted their saddles, found the main road, and pressed on westward with firm resolve.行經一個多月，忽聽得水聲振耳。After traveling for over a month, they suddenly heard the roar of water assaulting their ears.三藏大驚道：「徒弟呀，又是那裡水聲？」行者笑道：「你這老師父忒也多疑，做不得和尚。Sanzang was greatly alarmed and said, "Disciple, what is that water sound again?" Xingzhe laughed and said, "Old master, you are far too suspicious — you'll never make a proper monk.我們一同四眾，偏你聽見甚麼水聲。Here we are, the four of us together, and yet only you hear some sound of water.你把那《多心經》又忘了也？」唐僧道：「《多心經》乃浮屠山烏巢禪師口授，共五十四句，二百七十個字。Have you forgotten the Heart Sutra again?" Tang Seng said, "The Heart Sutra was orally transmitted to me by Chan Master Wuchao of Mount Futu — fifty-four lines in all, two hundred and seventy characters.我當時耳傳，至今常念，你知我忘了那句兒？」行者道：「老師父，你忘了『無眼耳鼻舌身意』。I received it by ear at the time, and I have recited it constantly ever since — which line do you claim I've forgotten?" Xingzhe said, "Old master, you've forgotten 'no eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, or mind.'我等出家之人，眼不視色，耳不聽聲，鼻不嗅香，舌不嘗味，身不知寒暑，意不存妄想：如此謂之祛褪六賊。For those of us who have left the household life: the eye should not gaze on form, the ear should not heed sound, the nose should not sniff fragrance, the tongue should not savor taste, the body should not feel heat or cold, and the mind should not harbor idle fancies — this is what is called driving off the six thieves.你如今為求經，念念在意；Yet now, in seeking the scriptures, your every thought dwells on it;怕妖魔，不肯捨身；fearing demons, you are unwilling to give up your body;要齋吃，動舌；craving a vegetarian meal sets your tongue stirring;喜香甜，觸鼻；delighting in sweet fragrance stirs your nose;聞聲音，驚耳；hearing a sound startles your ear;睹事物，凝眸；beholding a sight fixes your gaze —招來這六賊紛紛，怎生得西天見佛？」三藏聞言，默然沉慮道：「徒弟啊，我summoning all six thieves in a swarm — how then can you ever reach the Western Heaven and see the Buddha?" Hearing this, Sanzang fell silent, sunk in thought, and said, "Disciples, I—

师徒们出洞来，攀鞍上马，找大路，笃志投西。行经一个多月，忽听得水声振耳。三藏大惊道：「徒弟呀，又是那里水声？」行者笑道：「你这老师父忒也多疑，做不得和尚。我们一同四众，偏你听见甚么水声。你把那《多心经》又忘了也？」唐僧道：「《多心经》乃浮屠山乌巢禅师口授，共五十四句，二百七十个字。我当时耳传，至今常念，你知我忘了那句儿？」行者道：「老师父，你忘了『无眼耳鼻舌身意』。我等出家之人，眼不视色，耳不听声，鼻不嗅香，舌不尝味，身不知寒暑，意不存妄想：如此谓之祛褪六贼。你如今为求经，念念在意；怕妖魔，不肯舍身；要斋吃，动舌；喜香甜，触鼻；闻声音，惊耳；睹事物，凝眸；招来这六贼纷纷，怎生得西天见佛？」三藏闻言，默然沉虑道：「徒弟啊，我

行者聽畢，忍不住鼓掌大笑道：「這師父原來只是思鄉難息。When Xingzhe heard this, he could not help clapping his hands and roaring with laughter, saying, "So it turns out this old master simply cannot stop pining for home.若要那三三行滿，有何難哉？If you wish to complete the full course of the nine times nine trials, what difficulty could there truly be in it?常言道：『功到自然成』哩。」八戒回頭道：「哥啊，若照依這般魔障凶高，就走上一千年也不得成功。」沙僧道：「二哥，你和我一般，拙口鈍腮，不要惹大哥熱擦。As the saying goes, 'Effort brought to its fullness will naturally bear fruit.'" Bajie turned his head and said, "Brother, if the demonic ordeals keep coming as fierce as this, we could walk on for a thousand years and still never succeed." Shaseng said, "Second Brother, you're as clumsy of mouth and slow of wit as I am — don't go stirring up Big Brother's temper.且只捱肩磨擔，終須有日成功也。」Just keep shouldering the load and trudging on, and surely the day of success will come."

行者听毕，忍不住鼓掌大笑道：「这师父原来只是思乡难息。若要那三三行满，有何难哉？常言道：『功到自然成』哩。」八戒回头道：「哥啊，若照依这般魔障凶高，就走上一千年也不得成功。」沙僧道：「二哥，你和我一般，拙口钝腮，不要惹大哥热擦。且只挨肩磨担，终须有日成功也。」

師徒們正話間，腳走不停，馬蹄正疾，見前面有一道黑水滔天，馬不能進。As master and disciples talked along the way, their feet never stopped moving and the horse's hooves pressed swiftly on, until ahead they saw a stretch of black water surging to the sky, so that the horse could go no further.四眾停立岸邊，仔細觀看，但見那：The four of them halted at the bank and looked closely, and this is what they saw:

师徒们正话间，脚走不停，马蹄正疾，见前面有一道黑水滔天，马不能进。四众停立岸边，仔细观看，但见那：

唐僧下馬道：「徒弟，這水怎麼如此渾黑？」八戒道：「是那家潑了靛缸了。」沙僧道：「不然，是誰家洗筆硯哩。」行者道：「你們且休胡猜亂道，且設法保師父過去。」八戒道：「這河若是老豬過去不難：或是駕了雲頭，或是下河負水，不消頓飯時，我就過去了。」沙僧道：「若教我老沙，也只消縱雲屣水，頃刻而過。」行者道：「我等容易，只是師父難哩。」三藏道：「徒弟啊，這河有多少寬麼？」八戒道：「約摸有十來里寬。」三藏道：「你三個計較，著那個馱我過去罷。」行者道：「八戒馱得。」八戒道：「不好馱：若是馱著騰雲，三尺也不能離地。Tang Seng dismounted and said, "Disciples, why is this water so murky and black?" Bajie said, "Some household must have spilled a vat of indigo dye into it." Shaseng said, "Not so — more likely someone's been washing their ink brushes and inkstones in it." Xingzhe said, "Stop your wild guessing, the two of you, and let's find some way to get our master across." Bajie said, "As for this river, it would be no trouble for old Zhu to cross: whether riding a cloud or wading through the water bearing a load, it wouldn't take me the time it takes to eat a meal to get across." Shaseng said, "If it were left to old Sha, it would likewise take no more than mounting a cloud or treading the water — a moment and I'd be across." Xingzhe said, "For us it's easy enough — it's our master who is the difficulty." Sanzang said, "Disciples, how wide might this river be?" Bajie said, "About ten li across, I'd guess." Sanzang said, "The three of you discuss it and decide which of you will carry me across." Xingzhe said, "Bajie can carry you." Bajie said, "That won't do: if I carry him while riding a cloud, I won't be able to rise three feet off the ground.常言道：『背凡人重若丘山。』若是馱著負水，轉連我墜下水去了。」As the saying goes, 'A mortal's weight on one's back is heavy as a mountain range.' And if I carry him while wading through the water, he'll only end up dragging me down under the water with him."

唐僧下马道：「徒弟，这水怎么如此浑黑？」八戒道：「是那家泼了靛缸了。」沙僧道：「不然，是谁家洗笔砚哩。」行者道：「你们且休胡猜乱道，且设法保师父过去。」八戒道：「这河若是老猪过去不难：或是驾了云头，或是下河负水，不消顿饭时，我就过去了。」沙僧道：「若教我老沙，也只消纵云屣水，顷刻而过。」行者道：「我等容易，只是师父难哩。」三藏道：「徒弟啊，这河有多少宽么？」八戒道：「约摸有十来里宽。」三藏道：「你三个计较，著那个驮我过去罢。」行者道：「八戒驮得。」八戒道：「不好驮：若是驮著腾云，三尺也不能离地。常言道：『背凡人重若丘山。』若是驮著负水，转连我坠下水去了。」

師徒們在河邊正都商議，只見那上溜頭有一人棹下一隻小船兒來。As master and disciples stood by the riverbank deliberating, they saw a man upstream poling a small boat down toward them.唐僧喜道：「徒弟，有船來了，叫他渡我們過去。」沙僧厲聲高叫道：「棹船的，來渡人，來渡人。」船上人道：「我不是渡船，如何渡人？」沙僧道：「天上人間，方便第一。Tang Seng said happily, "Disciples, a boat is coming — call out to him to ferry us across." Shaseng called out loudly, "Boatman! Come ferry us across, come ferry us across!" The man on the boat said, "I'm no ferryman — how could I ferry people across?" Shaseng said, "In heaven or on earth, offering convenience to others comes first.你雖不是渡船，我們也不是常來打攪你的。Even if you're not a regular ferry, we won't trouble you often.我等是東土欽差取經的佛子，你可方便方便，渡我們過去，謝你。」那人聞言，卻把船兒棹近岸邊，扶著槳道：「師父啊，我這船小，你們人多，怎能全渡？」三藏近前看了，那船兒原來是一段木頭刻的，中間只有一個艙口，只好坐下兩個人。We are Buddhist pilgrims sent from the Land of the East to fetch the scriptures — please be so good as to grant us this convenience and ferry us across, and we shall thank you for it." Hearing this, the man poled his boat nearer to the bank, and steadying himself on his oar, said, "Master, my boat is small and there are many of you — how can I possibly ferry you all across at once?" Sanzang came closer and looked, and saw that the boat was in fact carved from a single log, with only one open hold in the middle, just large enough to seat two people.三藏道：「怎生是好？」沙僧道：「這般啊，兩遭兒渡罷。」八戒就使心術，要躲懶討乖，道：「悟淨，你與大哥在這邊看著行李、馬匹，等我保師父先過去，卻再來渡馬。Sanzang said, "What shall we do?" Shaseng said, "In that case, let's cross in two trips." Bajie, scheming to shirk his share of the work and play the clever one, said, "Wujing, you and Big Brother stay here and watch the baggage and the horse, while I escort Master across first, and then come back for the horse.教大哥跳過去罷。」行者點頭道：「你說的是。」Let Big Brother leap across on his own." Xingzhe nodded and said, "That sounds right."

师徒们在河边正都商议，只见那上溜头有一人棹下一只小船儿来。唐僧喜道：「徒弟，有船来了，叫他渡我们过去。」沙僧厉声高叫道：「棹船的，来渡人，来渡人。」船上人道：「我不是渡船，如何渡人？」沙僧道：「天上人间，方便第一。你虽不是渡船，我们也不是常来打搅你的。我等是东土钦差取经的佛子，你可方便方便，渡我们过去，谢你。」那人闻言，却把船儿棹近岸边，扶著桨道：「师父啊，我这船小，你们人多，怎能全渡？」三藏近前看了，那船儿原来是一段木头刻的，中间只有一个舱口，只好坐下两个人。三藏道：「怎生是好？」沙僧道：「这般啊，两遭儿渡罢。」八戒就使心术，要躲懒讨乖，道：「悟净，你与大哥在这边看著行李、马匹，等我保师父先过去，却再来渡马。教大哥跳过去罢。」行者点头道：「你说的是。」

那獃子扶著唐僧，那梢公撐開船，舉棹沖流，一直而去。The fool supported Tang Seng, the boatman pushed off, and raising his oar he drove the boat straight through the current and away.方才行到中間，只聽得一聲響喨，捲浪翻波，遮天迷日。Just as they reached the middle of the river, they suddenly heard a great roaring sound, and rolling waves surged up, blotting out the sky and hiding the sun.那陣狂風十分利害！That gust of savage wind was fierce indeed!好風：What a wind:

那呆子扶著唐僧，那梢公撑开船，举棹冲流，一直而去。方才行到中间，只听得一声响喨，卷浪翻波，遮天迷日。那阵狂风十分利害！好风：

這陣風，原來就是那棹船人弄的。This gust of wind, it turned out, was none other than the doing of that very boatman.他本是黑水河中怪物。He was in truth a monster of the Black Water River.眼看著那唐僧與豬八戒，連船兒淬在水裡，無影無形，不知攝了那方去也。Before their very eyes, Tang Seng and Zhu Bajie, boat and all, were plunged down into the water, vanishing without a trace, and no one knew to what place they had been carried off.

这阵风，原来就是那棹船人弄的。他本是黑水河中怪物。眼看著那唐僧与猪八戒，连船儿淬在水里，无影无形，不知摄了那方去也。

這岸上沙僧與行者心慌道：「怎麼好？On the bank, Shaseng and Xingzhe cried out in alarm, "What shall we do?老師父步步逢災，才脫了魔障，幸得這一路平安，又遇著黑水迍邅。」沙僧道：「莫是翻了船？Our old master meets with calamity at every step — he had only just escaped one demonic ordeal, and we were fortunate enough to travel this stretch in peace, only now to run into trouble at the Black Water River." Shaseng said, "Could the boat have capsized?我們往下溜頭找尋去。」行者道：「不是翻船，若翻船，八戒會水，他必然保師父，負水而出。Let's go search downstream." Xingzhe said, "It wasn't a capsized boat — if the boat had capsized, Bajie knows how to swim, and he would certainly have protected our master and carried him up out of the water.我才見那個棹船的有些不正氣，想必就是這廝弄風，把師父拖下水去了。」沙僧聞言道：「哥哥何不早說？Just now I noticed something not quite right about that boatman's manner — he must be the one who stirred up the wind and dragged Master down into the water." Hearing this, Shaseng said, "Brother, why didn't you say so sooner?你看著馬與行李，等我下水找尋去來。」行者道：「這水色不正，恐你不能去。」沙僧道：「這水比我那流沙河如何？You watch the horse and the baggage, and let me go down into the water to search." Xingzhe said, "This water's color is not right — I'm afraid you may not be able to manage it." Shaseng said, "How does this water compare to my old Flowing Sands River?去得，去得。」I can manage it, I can manage it."

这岸上沙僧与行者心慌道：「怎么好？老师父步步逢灾，才脱了魔障，幸得这一路平安，又遇著黑水迍邅。」沙僧道：「莫是翻了船？我们往下溜头找寻去。」行者道：「不是翻船，若翻船，八戒会水，他必然保师父，负水而出。我才见那个棹船的有些不正气，想必就是这厮弄风，把师父拖下水去了。」沙僧闻言道：「哥哥何不早说？你看著马与行李，等我下水找寻去来。」行者道：「这水色不正，恐你不能去。」沙僧道：「这水比我那流沙河如何？去得，去得。」

好和尚，脫了褊衫，紮抹了手腳，掄著降妖寶杖，撲的一聲，分開水路，鑽入波中，大搭步行將進去。What a fine monk — he stripped off his robe, bound up his sleeves and trouser legs, and hefting his demon-quelling staff, plunged in with a splash, parting the waters, and strode with great steps down into the depths.正走處，只聽得有人言語。As he was walking along, he suddenly heard the sound of voices talking.沙僧閃在傍邊，偷睛觀看，那壁廂有一座亭臺，臺門外橫封了八個大字，乃是「衡陽峪黑水河神府」。Shaseng slipped to one side and, peering out, saw over there a pavilion with a hall, and across the gate outside hung a horizontal board with eight large characters sealed upon it, reading: "Palace of the Black Water River God, Hengyang Valley."又聽得那怪物坐在上面道：「一向辛苦，今日方能得物。He also heard the monster sitting within, saying, "After all this trouble, today I've finally got hold of my prize.這和尚乃十世修行的好人，但得吃他一塊肉，便做長生不老人。This monk has cultivated himself through ten incarnations and is a truly good man — if I can just eat a single piece of his flesh, I shall become a man of eternal life, never to grow old.我為他也等夠多時，今朝卻不負我志。」教：「小的們，快把鐵籠擡出來，將這兩個和尚囫圇蒸熟，具柬去請二舅爺來，與他暖壽。」沙僧聞言，按不住心頭火起，掣寶杖，將門亂打。I have waited for him this long while precisely for this, and today at last my ambition will not be denied." He then ordered, "You underlings, quickly fetch out the iron cage, steam these two monks whole until they're cooked through, and prepare an invitation to send to my Second Uncle, so he may join me in celebrating my birthday." When Shaseng heard this, he could not hold back the fire rising in his heart, and drawing his staff, he began pounding wildly at the gate.口中罵道：「那潑物，快送我唐僧師父與八戒師兄出來！」諕得那門內妖邪急跑去報：「禍事了。」老怪問：「甚麼禍事？」小妖道：「外面有一個晦氣色臉的和尚，打著前門罵，要人哩！」He cursed as he struck, "You vile creature, send my master Tang Seng and my brother Bajie out here at once!" This so frightened the demon minions inside the gate that they ran off to report, "Disaster!" The old demon asked, "What disaster?" The little demon said, "Outside there's a monk with a dark, unlucky-looking face pounding on the front gate and cursing, demanding people!"

那怪聞言，即喚取披掛。Hearing this, the monster at once called for his armor.小妖擡出披掛。The little demons brought the armor out.老妖結束整齊，手提一根竹節鋼鞭，走出門來，真個是兇頑毒像。The old demon, fully armed and arrayed, took up a bamboo-jointed steel whip and strode out the gate — truly a fierce and vicious sight.但見：Behold:

那怪闻言，即唤取披挂。小妖抬出披挂。老妖结束整齐，手提一根竹节钢鞭，走出门来，真个是凶顽毒像。但见：

那怪喝道：「是甚人在此打我門哩？」沙僧道：「我把你個無知的潑怪！The monster bellowed, "Who is this pounding on my gate?" Shaseng said, "You ignorant, vile fiend!你怎麼弄玄虛，變作梢公，架船將我師父攝來？How dare you play tricks, disguise yourself as a boatman, and lure my master aboard your boat to abduct him?快早送還，饒你性命。」那怪呵呵笑道：「這和尚不知死活。Return him at once, and I'll spare your life." The monster laughed heartily and said, "This monk doesn't know when he's overstepped his bounds.你師父是我拿了，如今要蒸熟了請人哩。I have already caught your master, and now I mean to steam him through and invite guests to feast on him.你上來，與我見個雌雄。Come up here and let's settle who's the stronger.三合敵得我啊，還你師父；If you can withstand me three bouts, I'll return your master to you;如三合敵不得，連你一發都蒸吃了，休想西天去也。」沙僧聞言大怒，掄寶杖，劈頭就打；but if you can't hold out three bouts, I'll steam and eat you along with him, and you can give up all thought of reaching the Western Heaven." Hearing this, Shaseng flew into a rage, swung up his staff, and struck straight at the monster's head;那怪舉鋼鞭，急架相迎。the monster raised his steel whip and swiftly parried the blow.兩個在水底下，這場好殺：The two of them fought there beneath the water — what a splendid battle it was:

那怪喝道：「是甚人在此打我门哩？」沙僧道：「我把你个无知的泼怪！你怎么弄玄虚，变作梢公，架船将我师父摄来？快早送还，饶你性命。」那怪呵呵笑道：「这和尚不知死活。你师父是我拿了，如今要蒸熟了请人哩。你上来，与我见个雌雄。三合敌得我啊，还你师父；如三合敌不得，连你一发都蒸吃了，休想西天去也。」沙僧闻言大怒，抡宝杖，劈头就打；那怪举钢鞭，急架相迎。两个在水底下，这场好杀：

他二人戰經三十回合，不見高低。The two fought through some thirty bouts without either gaining the upper hand.沙僧暗想道：「這怪物是我的對手，枉自不能取勝，且引他出去，教師兄打他。」這沙僧虛丟了個架子，拖著寶杖就走。Shaseng thought to himself, "This monster is truly a match for me — it's useless to keep fighting without gaining ground; better to lure him out and let my elder brother deal with him." So Shaseng feigned a false opening, dragged his staff, and turned to flee.那妖精更不趕來，道：「你去罷，我不與你鬥了，我且具柬帖兒去請客哩。」But the demon did not pursue him at all, saying instead, "Off you go — I'm done fighting with you. I still have an invitation to write and guests to summon."

他二人战经三十回合，不见高低。沙僧暗想道：「这怪物是我的对手，枉自不能取胜，且引他出去，教师兄打他。」这沙僧虚丢了个架子，拖著宝杖就走。那妖精更不赶来，道：「你去罢，我不与你斗了，我且具柬帖儿去请客哩。」

沙僧氣呼呼跳出水來，見了行者道：「哥哥，這怪物無禮。」行者問道：「你下去許多時才出來，端的是甚妖邪？Shaseng, seething with anger, leapt up out of the water and, seeing Xingzhe, said, "Brother, that monster has no manners at all." Xingzhe asked, "You were down there so long before coming up — what exactly is this demon?可曾尋見師父？」沙僧道：「他這裡邊有一座亭臺，臺門外橫書八個大字，喚做『衡陽峪黑水河神府』。Did you manage to find our master?" Shaseng said, "Down there is a pavilion hall, and across the gate outside is written, in eight large characters, 'Palace of the Black Water River God, Hengyang Valley.'我閃在傍邊，聽他在裡面說話，教小的們刷洗鐵籠，待要把師父與八戒蒸熟了，去請他舅爺來暖壽。I slipped aside and listened to him talking within — he was ordering the underlings to scrub out the iron cage, meaning to steam Master and Bajie through and then invite his uncle to come celebrate his birthday.是我發起怒來，就去打門。That's when I flew into a rage and went to pound on the gate.那怪物提一條竹節鋼鞭走出來，與我鬥了這半日，約有三十合，不分勝負。The monster came out wielding a bamboo-jointed steel whip, and we fought for a good while — about thirty bouts — without either of us winning.我卻使個佯輸法，要引他出來，著你助陣。So I used a feigned-defeat trick, meaning to lure him out here so you could join the fight.那怪物乖得緊，他不來趕我，只要回去具柬請客。But the monster is far too cunning — he wouldn't chase after me, and only wanted to go back and prepare his invitations for his guests.我才上來了。」行者道：「不知是個甚麼妖邪？」沙僧道：「那模樣象像個大鱉；That's why I came up just now." Xingzhe said, "I wonder what sort of demon this could be?" Shaseng said, "In appearance he looks rather like a great soft-shelled turtle;不然，便是個鼉龍也。」行者道：「不知那個是他舅爺？」or else perhaps he is some kind of river dragon." Xingzhe said, "I wonder who this 'uncle' of his might be?"

沙僧气呼呼跳出水来，见了行者道：「哥哥，这怪物无礼。」行者问道：「你下去许多时才出来，端的是甚妖邪？可曾寻见师父？」沙僧道：「他这里边有一座亭台，台门外横书八个大字，唤做『衡阳峪黑水河神府』。我闪在傍边，听他在里面说话，教小的们刷洗铁笼，待要把师父与八戒蒸熟了，去请他舅爷来暖寿。是我发起怒来，就去打门。那怪物提一条竹节钢鞭走出来，与我斗了这半日，约有三十合，不分胜负。我却使个佯输法，要引他出来，著你助阵。那怪物乖得紧，他不来赶我，只要回去具柬请客。我才上来了。」行者道：「不知是个甚么妖邪？」沙僧道：「那模样象像个大鳖；不然，便是个鼍龙也。」行者道：「不知那个是他舅爷？」

說不了，只見那下灣裡走出一個老人，遠遠的跪下，叫：「大聖，黑水河河神叩頭。」行者道：「你莫是那棹船的妖邪，又來騙我麼？」那老人磕頭滴淚道：「大聖，我不是妖邪，我是這河內真神。Before he had finished speaking, they saw an old man come out from a bend downstream, and from far off he knelt down and called out, "Great Sage, the god of the Black Water River kowtows to you." Xingzhe said, "Aren't you that boatman demon, come again to try to deceive me?" The old man kowtowed, tears falling, and said, "Great Sage, I am no demon — I am the true god of this river.那妖精舊年五月間，從西洋海趁大潮來於此處，就與小神交鬥。That monster came riding the great tide from the Western Ocean last year in the fifth month, arrived at this place, and fought against this lowly god.奈我年邁身衰，敵他不過，把我坐的那衡陽峪黑水河神府就占奪去住了，又傷了我許多水族。But being aged and feeble, I was no match for him, and he seized the very Palace of the Black Water River in Hengyang Valley where I dwelt and took it for his own home, and wounded a great many of my water folk besides.我卻沒奈何，徑往海內告他。Having no other recourse, I went straight to the sea to lodge a complaint against him.原來西海龍王是他的母舅，不准我的狀子，教我讓與他住。It turns out the Dragon King of the Western Sea is this monster's uncle by marriage, and so he refused to accept my complaint, and instead ordered me to yield my dwelling to him.我欲啟奏上天，奈何神微職小，不能得見玉帝。I wished to petition Heaven directly, but being a minor god of little standing, I have no way to gain audience with the Jade Emperor.今聞得大聖到此，特來參拜投生。Hearing today that the Great Sage had arrived here, I came especially to pay homage and throw myself upon your mercy.萬望大聖與我出力報冤。」行者聞言道：「這等說，西海龍王都該有罪。I beg most earnestly that the Great Sage will exert his strength on my behalf and avenge this wrong." Hearing this, Xingzhe said, "If that is so, then the Dragon King of the Western Sea must bear some blame in this as well.他如今攝了我師父與師弟，揚言要蒸熟了，去請他舅爺暖壽。He has now abducted my master and my fellow disciple, and openly declares he means to steam them through and invite his uncle to celebrate his birthday.我正要拿他，幸得你來報信。I was just about to go seize him, and fortunately you have come to bring me word.這等，河神你陪著沙僧在此看守，等我去海中，先把那龍王捉來，教他擒此怪物。」河神道：「深感大聖大恩。」In that case, River God, stay here with Shaseng to keep watch, while I go to the sea first and seize that Dragon King, and make him capture this monster himself." The River God said, "I am deeply grateful for the Great Sage's boundless kindness."

说不了，只见那下湾里走出一个老人，远远的跪下，叫：「大圣，黑水河河神叩头。」行者道：「你莫是那棹船的妖邪，又来骗我么？」那老人磕头滴泪道：「大圣，我不是妖邪，我是这河内真神。那妖精旧年五月间，从西洋海趁大潮来于此处，就与小神交斗。奈我年迈身衰，敌他不过，把我坐的那衡阳峪黑水河神府就占夺去住了，又伤了我许多水族。我却没奈何，径往海内告他。原来西海龙王是他的母舅，不准我的状子，教我让与他住。我欲启奏上天，奈何神微职小，不能得见玉帝。今闻得大圣到此，特来参拜投生。万望大圣与我出力报冤。」行者闻言道：「这等说，西海龙王都该有罪。他如今摄了我师父与师弟，扬言要蒸熟了，去请他舅爷暖寿。我正要拿他，幸得你来报信。这等，河神你陪著沙僧在此看守，等我去海中，先把那龙王捉来，教他擒此怪物。」河神道：「深感大圣大恩。」

行者即駕雲，徑至西洋大海。Xingzhe at once mounted the clouds and went straight to the Great Western Ocean.按觔斗，捻了避水訣，分開波浪。He brought his somersault cloud down, made the water-repelling sign, and parted the waves.正然走處，撞見一個黑魚精捧著一個渾金的請書匣兒，從下流頭似箭如梭鑽將上來。Just as he was making his way along, he encountered a black fish spirit clutching a solid-gold invitation box, shooting up from downstream swift as an arrow, swift as a shuttle.被行者撲個滿面，掣鐵棒分頂一下，可憐就打得腦漿迸出，腮骨查開，嗗都的一聲，飄出水面。Xingzhe struck him full in the face and, raising his iron rod, brought it down splitting his skull in two — and pitiful to say, the blow burst his brains out and cracked open his gill-bones, and with a great gurgling splash, the corpse floated up out of the water.他卻揭開匣兒看處，裡邊有一張簡帖，上寫著：He lifted the lid of the box and looked inside — there was a letter, on which was written:

行者即驾云，径至西洋大海。按觔斗，捻了避水诀，分开波浪。正然走处，撞见一个黑鱼精捧著一个浑金的请书匣儿，从下流头似箭如梭钻将上来。被行者扑个满面，掣铁棒分顶一下，可怜就打得脑浆迸出，腮骨查开，嗗都的一声，飘出水面。他却揭开匣儿看处，里边有一张简帖，上写著：

愚甥鼉潔，頓首百拜，啟上二舅爺敖老大人臺下：向承佳惠，感感。Your foolish nephew Tuo Jie bows a hundred times in respect, and addresses this to my second uncle, the honorable Elder Ao: I have long been grateful for your great kindness.今因獲得二物，乃東土僧人，實為世間之罕物，甥不敢自用。Now, having obtained two rare beings — monks from the Land of the East, truly a rarity in this world — your nephew dares not consume them alone.因念舅爺聖誕在邇，特設菲筵，預祝千壽。Recalling that your birthday is drawing near, I have specially prepared a humble feast to wish you long life in advance.萬望車駕速臨，是荷。」I earnestly hope you will grace us with your presence soon — for which I would be most grateful.

愚甥鼍洁，顿首百拜，启上二舅爷敖老大人台下：向承佳惠，感感。今因获得二物，乃东土僧人，实为世间之罕物，甥不敢自用。因念舅爷圣诞在迩，特设菲筵，预祝千寿。万望车驾速临，是荷。」

行者笑道：「這廝都把供狀先遞與老孫也。」這才袖了帖子，往前再行。Xingzhe laughed and said, 'This fellow has already handed old Sun his own confession!' Only then did he tuck the letter into his sleeve and continue on his way.早有一個探海的夜叉望見行者，急抽身撞上水晶宮：「報大王：齊天大聖孫爺爺來了。」A sea-patrolling yaksha spotted Xingzhe from afar, and hastily turned to rush into the Crystal Palace: 'Report, Great King! The Great Sage Equal to Heaven, Grandfather Sun, has come!'

行者笑道：「这厮都把供状先递与老孙也。」这才袖了帖子，往前再行。早有一个探海的夜叉望见行者，急抽身撞上水晶宫：「报大王：齐天大圣孙爷爷来了。」

那龍王敖順，即領眾水族，出宮迎接道：「大聖，請入小宮少座，獻茶。」行者道：「我還不曾吃你的茶，你倒先吃了我的酒也！」龍王笑道：「大聖一向皈依佛門，不動葷酒，卻幾時請我吃酒來？」行者道：「你便不曾去吃酒，只是惹下一個吃酒的罪名了。」敖順大驚道：「小龍為何有罪？」行者袖中取出簡帖兒，遞與龍王。The Dragon King Ao Shun at once led the host of water creatures out of the palace to receive him, saying, 'Great Sage, please come into my humble palace and sit a while, and let me offer you tea.' Xingzhe said, 'I have yet to drink your tea, but you have already drunk my wine!' The Dragon King laughed and said, 'Great Sage, you have long since taken refuge in the Buddhist faith and touch neither meat nor wine — when did you ever invite me to drink wine?' Xingzhe said, 'Even though you never actually drank the wine, you have still incurred the charge of drinking it.' Ao Shun was greatly astonished and said, 'How could this little dragon be guilty of any crime?' Xingzhe drew the letter from his sleeve and handed it to the Dragon King.

那龙王敖顺，即领众水族，出宫迎接道：「大圣，请入小宫少座，献茶。」行者道：「我还不曾吃你的茶，你倒先吃了我的酒也！」龙王笑道：「大圣一向皈依佛门，不动荤酒，却几时请我吃酒来？」行者道：「你便不曾去吃酒，只是惹下一个吃酒的罪名了。」敖顺大惊道：「小龙为何有罪？」行者袖中取出简帖儿，递与龙王。

龍王見了，魂飛魄散，慌忙跪下，叩頭道：「大聖恕罪。When the Dragon King saw it, his soul scattered and his wits flew away; in a panic he fell to his knees and kowtowed, saying, 'Great Sage, forgive my crime.'那廝是舍妹第九個兒子。That wretch is my younger sister's ninth son.因妹夫錯行了風雨，刻減了雨數，被天曹降旨，著人曹官魏徵丞相夢裡斬了。Because my brother-in-law made errors in dispensing wind and rain, reducing the allotted amount of rainfall, the Court of Heaven issued a decree, and the Human Bureau official, Prime Minister Wei Zheng, beheaded him in a dream.舍妹無處安身，是小龍帶他到此，恩養成人。My younger sister had nowhere to settle, so this little dragon brought her here and raised her son to manhood out of kindness.前年不幸舍妹疾故，惟他無方居住，我著他在黑水河養性修真，不期他作此惡孽。Two years ago my sister unfortunately fell ill and died, and since he had nowhere fixed to live, I had him settle at the Black Water River to cultivate his nature and refine his true self — I never expected he would commit such wicked sins.小龍即差人去擒他來也。」行者道：「你令妹共有幾個賢郎？'This little dragon will send someone at once to capture and bring him here.' Xingzhe said, 'How many worthy sons did your sister have in all?'都在那裡作怪？」龍王道：「舍妹有九個兒子。'And where are they all up to their mischief?' The Dragon King said, 'My sister had nine sons.'那八個都是好的：第一個小黃龍，見居淮瀆；The other eight are all good: the first, the Little Yellow Dragon, now dwells at the Huai River;第二個小驪龍，見住濟瀆；the second, the Little Li Dragon, now dwells at the Ji River;第三個青背龍，占了江瀆；the third, the Green-Backed Dragon, has taken the Yangtze River;第四個赤髯龍，鎮守河瀆；the fourth, the Red-Bearded Dragon, guards the Yellow River;第五個徒勞龍，與佛祖司鐘；the fifth, the Tulao Dragon, tends the bell for the Buddha;第六個穩獸龍，與神宮鎮脊；the sixth, the Wenshou Dragon, guards the ridgepole of the divine palace;第七個敬仲龍，與玉帝守擎天華表；the seventh, the Jingzhong Dragon, guards the Sky-Supporting Ornamental Pillar for the Jade Emperor;第八個蜃龍，在大家兄處砥據太岳。the eighth, the Shen Dragon, resides at Mount Tai with my elder brother.此乃第九個鼉龍，因年幼無甚執事，自舊年才著他居黑水河養性，待成名，別遷調用。This ninth one is the Tuo Dragon, and being young and without any particular office, I only had him settle at the Black Water River last year to cultivate his nature, meaning to transfer him elsewhere for employment once he had made a name for himself.誰知他不遵吾旨，衝撞大聖也。」Who could have known he would disobey my instructions and offend the Great Sage.

龙王见了，魂飞魄散，慌忙跪下，叩头道：「大圣恕罪。那厮是舍妹第九个儿子。因妹夫错行了风雨，刻减了雨数，被天曹降旨，著人曹官魏征丞相梦里斩了。舍妹无处安身，是小龙带他到此，恩养成人。前年不幸舍妹疾故，惟他无方居住，我著他在黑水河养性修真，不期他作此恶孽。小龙即差人去擒他来也。」行者道：「你令妹共有几个贤郎？都在那里作怪？」龙王道：「舍妹有九个儿子。那八个都是好的：第一个小黄龙，见居淮渎；第二个小骊龙，见住济渎；第三个青背龙，占了江渎；第四个赤髯龙，镇守河渎；第五个徒劳龙，与佛祖司钟；第六个稳兽龙，与神宫镇脊；第七个敬仲龙，与玉帝守擎天华表；第八个蜃龙，在大家兄处砥据太岳。此乃第九个鼍龙，因年幼无甚执事，自旧年才著他居黑水河养性，待成名，别迁调用。谁知他不遵吾旨，冲撞大圣也。」

行者聞言，笑道：「你妹妹有幾個妹丈？」敖順道：「只嫁得一個妹丈，乃涇河龍王。When Xingzhe heard this, he laughed and said, 'How many husbands did your sister have?' Ao Shun said, 'She was only ever married to one husband, the Dragon King of the Jing River.'向年以此被斬，舍妹孀居於此，前年疾故了。」行者道：「一夫一妻，如何生此幾個雜種？」敖順道：「此正謂『龍生九種，九種各別。』」行者道：「我才心中煩惱，欲將簡帖為證，上奏天庭，問你個通同作怪，搶奪人口之罪。'He was beheaded years ago for that very matter, and my sister lived here as a widow until she fell ill and died two years ago.' Xingzhe said, 'One husband and one wife — how could they produce this litter of mongrels?' Ao Shun said, 'This is exactly what is meant by "a dragon bears nine kinds of offspring, and each of the nine is different."' Xingzhe said, 'A moment ago I was quite vexed, and meant to take this letter as evidence and memorialize the Court of Heaven, charging you with colluding in mischief and abducting people.'據你所言，是那廝不遵教誨，我且饒你這次：一則是看你昆玉分上；'But according to what you say, it was that wretch who disobeyed instruction, so I will forgive you this once: first, out of regard for you and your brothers;'二來只該怪那廝年幼無知，你也不甚知情。'and second, the blame should fall on that young fool's ignorance, since you yourself knew little of the matter.'你快差人擒來，救我師父，再作區處。」敖順即喚太子摩昂：「快點五百蝦魚壯兵，將小鼉捉來問罪。」一壁廂安排酒席，與大聖陪禮。'Send someone quickly to capture him and rescue my master, and we will settle matters afterward.' Ao Shun at once summoned Crown Prince Mo'ang: 'Quickly muster five hundred shrimp and fish soldiers, and capture the little Tuo Dragon to answer for his crime.' At the same time he had a banquet prepared, to make amends to the Great Sage.行者道：「龍王再勿多心，既講開饒了你便罷，又何須辦酒？Xingzhe said, 'Dragon King, do not trouble your heart further — since the matter is settled and you are forgiven, why bother preparing a banquet?'我今須與你令郎同去：一則老師父遭愆，二則我師弟盼望。」'I must go now together with your son: first, because my old master is in danger, and second, because my fellow disciples are anxiously waiting.'

行者闻言，笑道：「你妹妹有几个妹丈？」敖顺道：「只嫁得一个妹丈，乃泾河龙王。向年以此被斩，舍妹孀居于此，前年疾故了。」行者道：「一夫一妻，如何生此几个杂种？」敖顺道：「此正谓『龙生九种，九种各别。』」行者道：「我才心中烦恼，欲将简帖为证，上奏天庭，问你个通同作怪，抢夺人口之罪。据你所言，是那厮不遵教诲，我且饶你这次：一则是看你昆玉分上；二来只该怪那厮年幼无知，你也不甚知情。你快差人擒来，救我师父，再作区处。」敖顺即唤太子摩昂：「快点五百虾鱼壮兵，将小鼍捉来问罪。」一壁厢安排酒席，与大圣陪礼。行者道：「龙王再勿多心，既讲开饶了你便罢，又何须办酒？我今须与你令郎同去：一则老师父遭愆，二则我师弟盼望。」

那老龍苦留不住，又見龍女捧茶來獻。The old dragon could not persuade him to stay, though he did have a dragon maiden bring tea to offer him.行者立飲他一盞香茶，別了老龍，隨與摩昂領兵，離了西海，早到黑水河中。Xingzhe stood and drank a cup of fragrant tea, took his leave of the old dragon, and then set off with Mo'ang leading the troops; they left the West Sea and soon arrived at the Black Water River.行者道：「賢太子，好生捉怪，我上岸去也。」摩昂道：「大聖寬心，小龍子將他拿上來先見了大聖，懲治了他罪名，把師父送上來，才敢帶回海內，見我家父。」行者欣然相別，捏了避水訣，跳出波津，徑到了東邊崖上。Xingzhe said, 'Worthy Prince, capture the monster well — I am going up to the bank now.' Mo'ang said, 'Set your mind at ease, Great Sage. This little dragon will bring him up to see the Great Sage first, punish him for his crime, and deliver your master up, before daring to take him back into the sea to see my father.' Xingzhe happily took his leave, formed the water-repelling sign, leapt out of the waves, and went straight to the cliff on the eastern bank.沙僧與那河神迎著道：「師兄，你去時從空而去，怎麼回來卻自河內而回？」行者把那打死魚精，得簡帖，怪龍王，與太子同領兵來之事，備陳了一遍。Sha Monk and the river god came to meet him, saying, 'Elder Brother, when you left you went off through the air — how is it you have returned from within the river?' Xingzhe recounted the whole affair in full: killing the fish spirit, obtaining the letter, confronting the Dragon King, and coming now together with the prince leading the troops.沙僧十分歡喜，都立在岸邊，候接師父不題。Sha Monk was overjoyed, and together they stood on the bank waiting to receive their master — but no more of that for now.

那老龙苦留不住，又见龙女捧茶来献。行者立饮他一盏香茶，别了老龙，随与摩昂领兵，离了西海，早到黑水河中。行者道：「贤太子，好生捉怪，我上岸去也。」摩昂道：「大圣宽心，小龙子将他拿上来先见了大圣，惩治了他罪名，把师父送上来，才敢带回海内，见我家父。」行者欣然相别，捏了避水诀，跳出波津，径到了东边崖上。沙僧与那河神迎著道：「师兄，你去时从空而去，怎么回来却自河内而回？」行者把那打死鱼精，得简帖，怪龙王，与太子同领兵来之事，备陈了一遍。沙僧十分欢喜，都立在岸边，候接师父不题。

卻說那摩昂太子著介士先到他水府門前，報與妖怪道：「西海老龍王太子摩昂來也。」那怪正坐，忽聞摩昂來，心中疑惑道：「我差黑魚精投簡帖拜請二舅爺，這早晚不見回話，怎麼舅爺不來，卻是表兄來耶？」正說間，只見那巡河的小怪又來報：「大王，河內有一枝兵，屯於水府之西，旗號上書著『西海儲君摩昂小帥』。」妖怪道：「這表兄卻也狂妄。Now to tell of Crown Prince Mo'ang: he sent an armored soldier ahead to the gate of the monster's watery mansion to announce, 'Mo'ang, Crown Prince of the old Dragon King of the West Sea, has arrived.' The monster was sitting there when he suddenly heard that Mo'ang had come, and grew suspicious in his heart: 'I sent the Black Fish Spirit to deliver a letter inviting my second uncle — by this time there has been no reply, so why does my uncle not come, but instead my cousin comes?' Just as he was saying this, a river-patrolling underling came to report again: 'Great King, there is a body of troops within the river, encamped west of the watery mansion, with a banner reading, "Mo'ang, Young Marshal and Heir Apparent of the West Sea."' The monster said, 'This cousin of mine is rather presumptuous.'想是舅爺不得來，命他來赴宴。'I suppose my uncle could not come, and ordered him to attend the banquet in his place.'既是赴宴，如何又領兵勞士？'But if he is coming to a banquet, why bring troops and soldiers along?'咳！Hah!但恐其間有故。」教：「小的們，將我的披掛鋼鞭伺候，恐一時變暴。'I fear there may be some reason behind this.' He ordered: 'You underlings, bring my armor and steel whip and stand ready, in case there is a sudden outbreak of violence.'待我且出去迎他，看是何如。」眾妖領命，一個個擦掌摩拳準備。'Let me go out and receive him first, and see how things stand.' The assembled demons obeyed the order, and each one rubbed his palms and clenched his fists in readiness.

却说那摩昂太子著介士先到他水府门前，报与妖怪道：「西海老龙王太子摩昂来也。」那怪正坐，忽闻摩昂来，心中疑惑道：「我差黑鱼精投简帖拜请二舅爷，这早晚不见回话，怎么舅爷不来，却是表兄来耶？」正说间，只见那巡河的小怪又来报：「大王，河内有一枝兵，屯于水府之西，旗号上书著『西海储君摩昂小帅』。」妖怪道：「这表兄却也狂妄。想是舅爷不得来，命他来赴宴。既是赴宴，如何又领兵劳士？咳！但恐其间有故。」教：「小的们，将我的披挂钢鞭伺候，恐一时变暴。待我且出去迎他，看是何如。」众妖领命，一个个擦掌摩拳准备。

這鼉龍出得門來，真個見一枝海兵劄營在右。This Tuo Dragon came out through the gate, and indeed saw a body of sea troops encamped to the right.只見：Behold:

鼉怪見了，徑至那營門前，厲聲高叫：「大表兄，小弟在此拱候，有請。」有一個巡營的螺螺，急至中軍帳：「報千歲殿下：外有鼉龍叫請哩。」太子按一按頂上金盔，束一束腰間寶帶，手提一根三棱簡，拽開步，跑出營去，道：「你來請我怎麼？」鼉龍進禮道：「小弟今早有簡帖拜請舅爺，想是舅爺見棄，著表兄來的。When the Tuo monster saw them, he went straight to the front of the camp gate and called out loudly, 'Elder Cousin, your younger brother waits here with folded hands to welcome you.' A camp-patrolling snail-spirit hurried to the central command tent: 'Report, Your Highness: outside, the Tuo Dragon is calling and inviting you.' The prince adjusted the golden helmet on his head, tightened the jeweled belt at his waist, took up a three-edged mace in hand, strode out of the camp, and said, 'What do you want, inviting me here?' The Tuo Dragon bowed in greeting and said, 'This morning your younger brother sent a letter inviting my uncle. I suppose my uncle set it aside and sent my cousin instead.'兄長既來赴席，如何又勞師動眾？'But since elder brother has come to attend the banquet, why trouble to mobilize troops and men?'不入水府，扎營在此，又貫甲提兵，何也？」太子道：「你請舅爺做甚？」妖怪道：「小弟一向蒙恩賜居於此，久別尊顏，未得孝順。'Why not enter the watery mansion, instead of camping out here, clad in armor and bearing troops — why is that?' The prince said, 'What did you want with inviting your uncle?' The monster said, 'Your younger brother has long dwelt here by his gracious favor, and having long been parted from his honored face, has had no chance to show him filial devotion.'昨日捉得一個東土僧人，我聞他是十世修行的元體，人吃了他，可以延壽，欲請舅爺看過，上鐵籠蒸熟，與舅爺暖壽哩。」太子喝道：「你這廝十分懵懂！'Yesterday I caught a monk from the Land of the East. I have heard he is the original body of one who has cultivated through ten lifetimes, and that whoever eats him may prolong his life. I wished to invite my uncle to look him over, then steam him thoroughly in an iron cage, as a birthday offering to warm my uncle's longevity.' The prince shouted, 'You wretch are utterly muddleheaded!'你道僧人是誰？」妖怪道：「他是唐朝來的僧人，往西天取經的和尚。」太子道：「你只知他是唐僧，不知他手下徒弟利害哩。」妖怪道：「他有一個長嘴的和尚，喚做個豬八戒，我也把他捉住了，要與唐和尚一同蒸吃。'Do you even know who this monk is?' The monster said, 'He is a monk who came from the Tang court, a monk going to the Western Heaven to fetch scriptures.' The prince said, 'You only know he is the Tang Monk, but you do not know how formidable his disciples are.' The monster said, 'He has a long-mouthed monk with him, called Zhu Bajie — I have caught him too, and mean to steam him and eat him along with the Tang monk.'還有一個徒弟，喚做沙和尚，乃是一條黑漢子，晦氣色臉，使一根寶杖，昨日在這門外與我討師父，被我帥出河兵，一頓鋼鞭，戰得他敗陣逃生，也不見怎的利害。」'There is also another disciple, called Sha Monk, a swarthy fellow with a sullen, unlucky-looking face, who wields a treasured staff. Yesterday, outside this gate, he came demanding his master back; but I led out my river troops, and with a few blows of my steel whip fought him until he broke ranks and fled for his life — I did not find him so very formidable after all.'

鼍怪见了，径至那营门前，厉声高叫：「大表兄，小弟在此拱候，有请。」有一个巡营的螺螺，急至中军帐：「报千岁殿下：外有鼍龙叫请哩。」太子按一按顶上金盔，束一束腰间宝带，手提一根三棱简，拽开步，跑出营去，道：「你来请我怎么？」鼍龙进礼道：「小弟今早有简帖拜请舅爷，想是舅爷见弃，著表兄来的。兄长既来赴席，如何又劳师动众？不入水府，扎营在此，又贯甲提兵，何也？」太子道：「你请舅爷做甚？」妖怪道：「小弟一向蒙恩赐居于此，久别尊颜，未得孝顺。昨日捉得一个东土僧人，我闻他是十世修行的元体，人吃了他，可以延寿，欲请舅爷看过，上铁笼蒸熟，与舅爷暖寿哩。」太子喝道：「你这厮十分懵懂！你道僧人是谁？」妖怪道：「他是唐朝来的僧人，往西天取经的和尚。」太子道：「你只知他是唐僧，不知他手下徒弟利害哩。」妖怪道：「他有一个长嘴的和尚，唤做个猪八戒，我也把他捉住了，要与唐和尚一同蒸吃。还有一个徒弟，唤做沙和尚，乃是一条黑汉子，晦气色脸，使一根宝杖，昨日在这门外与我讨师父，被我帅出河兵，一顿钢鞭，战得他败阵逃生，也不见怎的利害。」

太子道：「原來是你不知。The prince said, 'So it is that you simply do not know.'他還有一個大徒弟，是五百年前大鬧天宮上方太乙金仙齊天大聖。'He has yet another senior disciple, who five hundred years ago wrought great havoc in Heaven — the Grand Immortal of Supreme Unity from Above, the Great Sage Equal to Heaven.'如今保護唐僧往西天拜佛求經，是普陀巖大慈大悲觀音菩薩勸善，與他改名，喚做孫悟空行者。'He now escorts the Tang Monk to the Western Heaven to worship the Buddha and seek the scriptures — it was the Greatly Compassionate, Greatly Merciful Guanyin Bodhisattva of Mount Putuo who persuaded him to virtue and renamed him, calling him Sun Wukong, the Pilgrim.'你怎麼沒得做，撞出這件禍來？'How could you have nothing better to do than go and stir up this disaster?'他又在我海內遇著你的差人，奪了請帖，徑入水晶宮，拿捏我父子們有結連妖邪，搶奪人口之罪。'He met your messenger within my sea and seized the invitation letter, then went straight into the Crystal Palace, accusing my father and me of colluding with evil spirits and abducting people.'你快把唐僧、八戒送上河邊，交還了孫大聖，憑著我與他陪禮，你還好得性命；'You had better quickly send the Tang Monk and Bajie up to the riverbank and hand them back to the Great Sage Sun; leave it to me to make amends to him, and you may still keep your life;'若有半個『不』字，休想得全生居於此也。」那怪鼉聞此言，心中大怒道：「我與你嫡親的姑表，你倒反護他人。'but if you utter so much as half a word of refusal, do not think you will be allowed to go on living here.' When the Tuo monster heard this, he grew furious at heart and said, 'You and I are cousins by blood, yet you turn around and protect an outsider instead.'聽你所言，就教把唐僧送出。'To hear you talk, I should just hand the Tang Monk over.'天地間那裡有這等容易事也？'Where in this world is there such an easy matter as that?'你便怕他，莫成我也怕他？'You may be afraid of him, but does that mean I must be afraid of him too?'他若有手段，敢來我水府門前與我交戰三合，我才與他師父；'If he has any real skill, let him dare come to the gate of my watery mansion and fight three bouts with me — only then will I hand over his master;'若敵不過我，就連他也拿來，一齊蒸熟，也沒甚麼親人，也不去請客，自家關了門，教小的們唱唱舞舞，我坐在上面，自自在在，吃他娘不是。」'and if he cannot beat me, I will catch him too, and steam them all together — I need no relatives, I need invite no guests, I shall simply shut my own door, have my underlings sing and dance, sit up above at my ease, and eat them all up, and be damned.'

太子道：「原来是你不知。他还有一个大徒弟，是五百年前大闹天宫上方太乙金仙齐天大圣。如今保护唐僧往西天拜佛求经，是普陀岩大慈大悲观音菩萨劝善，与他改名，唤做孙悟空行者。你怎么没得做，撞出这件祸来？他又在我海内遇著你的差人，夺了请帖，径入水晶宫，拿捏我父子们有结连妖邪，抢夺人口之罪。你快把唐僧、八戒送上河边，交还了孙大圣，凭著我与他陪礼，你还好得性命；若有半个『不』字，休想得全生居于此也。」那怪鼍闻此言，心中大怒道：「我与你嫡亲的姑表，你倒反护他人。听你所言，就教把唐僧送出。天地间那里有这等容易事也？你便怕他，莫成我也怕他？他若有手段，敢来我水府门前与我交战三合，我才与他师父；若敌不过我，就连他也拿来，一齐蒸熟，也没甚么亲人，也不去请客，自家关了门，教小的们唱唱舞舞，我坐在上面，自自在在，吃他娘不是。」

太子見說，開口罵道：「這潑邪！When the prince heard this, he opened his mouth and cursed: 'This vile fiend!'果然無狀。'Truly outrageous and unruly.'且不要教孫大聖與你對敵，你敢與我相持麼？」那怪道：「要做好漢，怕甚麼相持？」教：「取披掛。」呼喚一聲，眾小妖跟隨左右，獻上披掛，捧上鋼鞭。'Let us set aside having the Great Sage Sun face you — dare you stand your ground against me?' The monster said, 'If I am to be a real man, why should I fear a contest?' He called out, 'Bring my armor.' At his call, the lesser demons attended him on either side, presenting his armor and bringing up his steel whip.他兩個變了臉，各逞英雄；The two of them changed countenance, each displaying his prowess;傳號令，一齊擂鼓。the order was given, and together the drums were beaten.這一場比與沙僧爭鬥，甚是不同。This bout was very different from the earlier fight with Sha Monk.但見那：Behold:

太子见说，开口骂道：「这泼邪！果然无状。且不要教孙大圣与你对敌，你敢与我相持么？」那怪道：「要做好汉，怕甚么相持？」教：「取披挂。」呼唤一声，众小妖跟随左右，献上披挂，捧上钢鞭。他两个变了脸，各逞英雄；传号令，一齐擂鼓。这一场比与沙僧争斗，甚是不同。但见那：

這太子將三稜簡閃了一個破綻，那妖精不知是詐，鑽將進來，被他使個解數，把妖精右臂只一簡，打了個躘踵。The prince feinted an opening with his three-edged mace; the demon, not realizing it was a trick, lunged forward, whereupon the prince executed a maneuver and struck the demon's right arm with a single blow of the mace, sending him staggering.趕上前，又一拍腳，跌倒在地。He pressed forward, gave him another kick, and knocked him flat to the ground.眾海兵一擁上前，揪翻住，將繩子背綁了雙手，將鐵索穿了琵琶骨，拿上岸來。The sea troops swarmed forward, seized and flipped him over, bound his two hands behind his back with rope, threaded an iron chain through his collarbones, and hauled him up onto the bank.押至孫行者面前道：「大聖，小龍子捉住妖鼉，請大聖定奪。」They marched him before Sun Xingzhe, saying, 'Great Sage, this little dragon has captured the demon Tuo — we ask the Great Sage to decide his fate.'

这太子将三棱简闪了一个破绽，那妖精不知是诈，钻将进来，被他使个解数，把妖精右臂只一简，打了个躘踵。赶上前，又一拍脚，跌倒在地。众海兵一拥上前，揪翻住，将绳子背绑了双手，将铁索穿了琵琶骨，拿上岸来。押至孙行者面前道：「大圣，小龙子捉住妖鼍，请大圣定夺。」

行者與沙僧見了道：「你這廝不遵旨令。When Xingzhe and Sha Monk saw him, Xingzhe said, 'You wretch did not obey your orders.'你舅爺原著你在此居住，教你養性存身，待你名成之日，別有遷用。'Your uncle originally had you settle here, telling you to cultivate your nature and preserve yourself, so that once you had made a name for yourself he would transfer you elsewhere for employment.'你怎麼強占水神之宅，倚勢行兇，欺心誑上，弄玄虛，騙我師父、師弟？'How dare you forcibly seize the river god's dwelling, rely on your power to commit violence, deceive your own conscience and defy your superior, work your tricks and deceptions, and cheat my master and my fellow disciple?'我待要打你這一棒，奈何老孫這棒子甚重，略打打兒就了了性命。'I meant to strike you with this rod of mine, but the trouble is old Sun's rod is so heavy that even a light blow would end your life.'你將我師父安在何處哩？」那怪叩頭不住道：「大聖，小鼉不知大聖大名。'Where have you kept my master?' The monster kowtowed without ceasing, saying, 'Great Sage, this little Tuo did not know the Great Sage's illustrious name.'卻才逆了表兄，騁強背理，被表兄把我拿住。'Just now I defied my cousin, flaunting my strength against reason, and was captured by him for it.'今見大聖，幸蒙大聖不殺之恩，感謝不盡。'Now that I have seen the Great Sage, I am fortunate to receive the Great Sage's mercy in sparing my life, for which I am endlessly grateful.'你師父還綑在那水府之間，望大聖解了我的鐵索，放了我手，等我到河中送他出來。」摩昂在傍道：「大聖，這廝是個逆怪，他極奸詐，若放了他，恐生惡念。」沙和尚道：「我認得他那裡，等我尋師父去。」'Your master is still bound within the watery mansion — I beg the Great Sage to loosen my iron chain and free my hands, and let me go into the river to bring him out.' Mo'ang, standing nearby, said, 'Great Sage, this fellow is a rebellious monster, extremely treacherous — if he is released, I fear he may hatch evil intentions.' Sha Monk said, 'I know the place — let me go find my master.'

行者与沙僧见了道：「你这厮不遵旨令。你舅爷原著你在此居住，教你养性存身，待你名成之日，别有迁用。你怎么强占水神之宅，倚势行凶，欺心诳上，弄玄虚，骗我师父、师弟？我待要打你这一棒，奈何老孙这棒子甚重，略打打儿就了了性命。你将我师父安在何处哩？」那怪叩头不住道：「大圣，小鼍不知大圣大名。却才逆了表兄，骋强背理，被表兄把我拿住。今见大圣，幸蒙大圣不杀之恩，感谢不尽。你师父还捆在那水府之间，望大圣解了我的铁索，放了我手，等我到河中送他出来。」摩昂在傍道：「大圣，这厮是个逆怪，他极奸诈，若放了他，恐生恶念。」沙和尚道：「我认得他那里，等我寻师父去。」

他兩個跳入水中，徑至水府門前。The two of them leapt into the water and went straight to the gate of the watery mansion.那裡門扇大開，更無一個小卒。There the gate stood wide open, with not a single underling in sight.直入亭臺裡面，見唐僧、八戒赤條條都綑在那裡。They went straight inside the pavilion and found the Tang Monk and Bajie both bound there stark naked.沙僧即忙解了師父，河神亦隨解了八戒，一家背著一個，出水面，徑至岸邊。Sha Monk hastily untied his master, and the river god likewise untied Bajie; each of them carried one on his back, rose up out of the water, and went straight to the bank.豬八戒見那妖精鎖綁在側，急掣鈀上前就築，口裡罵道：「潑邪畜！When Zhu Bajie saw the demon chained and bound off to the side, he hastily drew his rake and rushed forward to strike, cursing as he went, 'You vile beast!'你如今不吃我了？」行者扯住道：「兄弟，且饒他死罪罷，看敖順賢父子之情。」摩昂進禮道：「大聖，小龍子不敢久停。'So you're not going to eat me now, are you?' Xingzhe pulled him back, saying, 'Brother, spare him from death for now, out of regard for the worthy father and son, Ao Shun and Mo'ang.' Mo'ang bowed in courtesy and said, 'Great Sage, this little dragon dares not linger long.'既然救得你師父，我帶這廝去見家父；'Now that your master has been rescued, I will take this wretch to see my father;'雖大聖饒了他死罪，家父決不饒他活罪，定有發落處置，仍回覆大聖謝罪。」行者道：「既如此，你領他去罷。'though the Great Sage has spared him from death, my father will certainly not spare him his living punishment — there will surely be some sentence and disposition, and I will report back to the Great Sage afterward to apologize.' Xingzhe said, 'Since that is so, take him away then.'多多拜上令尊，尚容面謝。」那太子押著那妖潑，投水中，帥領海兵，徑轉西洋大海不題。'Please give my many respects to your honored father — I shall thank him in person another time.' The prince, escorting the vile monster, plunged into the water, and leading the sea troops, returned straight to the Western Ocean — but no more of that for now.

他两个跳入水中，径至水府门前。那里门扇大开，更无一个小卒。直入亭台里面，见唐僧、八戒赤条条都捆在那里。沙僧即忙解了师父，河神亦随解了八戒，一家背著一个，出水面，径至岸边。猪八戒见那妖精锁绑在侧，急掣钯上前就筑，口里骂道：「泼邪畜！你如今不吃我了？」行者扯住道：「兄弟，且饶他死罪罢，看敖顺贤父子之情。」摩昂进礼道：「大圣，小龙子不敢久停。既然救得你师父，我带这厮去见家父；虽大圣饶了他死罪，家父决不饶他活罪，定有发落处置，仍回覆大圣谢罪。」行者道：「既如此，你领他去罢。多多拜上令尊，尚容面谢。」那太子押著那妖泼，投水中，帅领海兵，径转西洋大海不题。

卻說那黑水河神謝了行者道：「多蒙大聖復得水府之恩。」唐僧道：「徒弟啊，如今還在東岸，如何渡此河也？」河神道：「老爺勿慮，且請上馬，小神開路，引老爺過河。」那師父才騎了白馬，八戒採著韁繩，沙和尚挑了行李，孫行者扶持左右。Now to tell of the Black Water River god, who thanked Xingzhe, saying, 'I am deeply grateful to the Great Sage for the favor of restoring my watery mansion to me.' The Tang Monk said, 'Disciples, we are still on the eastern bank now — how are we to cross this river?' The river god said, 'Old Master, have no worry. Please mount your horse, and this humble god will clear the way and guide you across the river.' The master then mounted the white horse, Bajie took hold of the reins, Sha Monk shouldered the luggage, and Sun Xingzhe supported him on either side.只見河神作起阻水的法術，將上流擋住，須臾，下流撤乾，開出一條大路。They watched as the river god worked his magic to hold back the water, damming the upstream flow; in a moment the downstream water drained away, opening up a broad path.師徒們行過西邊，謝了河神，登崖上路。Master and disciples crossed over to the western side, thanked the river god, and climbed the bank to continue on their way.這正是：Truly it was:
