Guanyin Subdues the Red Boy as the Boy-Attendant Sudhana

042Chapter 42

西The story goes that the six Sturdy Officers left the cave gate and headed straight southwest, following the road.:「Sun Wukong thought to himself: "He wants to invite the Old Great King to eat my master — the Old Great King must certainly be the Bull Demon King.Ever since old Sun met him years ago, we truly hit it off and became close friends. Now that I have returned to the right path, he is still an evil demon.Though we've been apart a long time, I still remember what he looks like.。」Let old Sun transform into the Bull Demon King and fool him a bit, and see what happens."

Splendid Wukong — he slipped away from the six little demons, spread his wings, and flew on ahead; when he was some ten-odd li from the little demons, he shook himself and transformed into the Bull Demon King;:「!」he plucked a few strands of hair, called "Change!", and they at once turned into several little demons. In a fold of the mountain, they flew hawks and led hounds, nocked crossbows and drew bows, putting on the appearance of a hunting party, and waited for the six Sturdy Officers.

:「。」:「。」:「。」:「便As that band walked along pulling and dragging each other, they suddenly saw the Bull Demon King seated in their midst; startled, Xinghongxian and Xianhongxingpu dropped to their knees, saying, "Grandfather Old Great King is right here!" As for Yunlixia, Wulixiaoyun, Jiruhuo, and Kuairufeng — being but mortal eyes of flesh, how could they tell true from false? — they too knelt down together, kowtowing and saying, "Grandfather, we little ones were sent from the Sage Child Great King of the Fiery Cloud Cave, to invite Grandfather Old Great King to come eat Tang Monk's flesh and extend your life by a thousand years." Wukong, playing along, answered, "Rise, my children, and come home with me first to change my clothes." The little demons kowtowed and said, "We beg Grandfather's indulgence — there's no need to return to your palace.。」:「The road is far, and we fear our Great King will blame us for delay — we beg to set off from right here." Wukong laughed and said, "What obedient children.。」Very well, very well — go on ahead and clear the way, and I'll come with you." The six demons roused their spirits and shouted the way open as they went ahead. The Great Sage followed behind.

Before long, they had already reached the place.:「。」:「。」便Kuairufeng and Jiruhuo rushed into the cave: "Report to the Great King: Grandfather Old Great King has arrived!" The demon king said joyfully, "So you're useful after all, coming back this fast." He at once called for the chieftains of every division to form ranks, raise banners and beat drums, and go out to welcome Grandfather Old Great King.滿The whole host of demons in the cave obeyed the order and, all neat and orderly, filed out.Wukong, lofty and imposing, thrust out his chest, shook his body once, and drew back onto himself all the hairs that had formed the hawk-flying, hound-leading attendants. He strode forward in long steps, walked straight in through the gate, and seated himself facing south in the center.:「。」:「。」Red Boy knelt down before him and kowtowed upward, saying, "Father King, your child bows in greeting." Wukong said, "Rise, my child, no need for ceremony." The demon king made four great bows, and when finished, stood off to one side.:「?」:「Wukong said, "My son, why have you invited me here?" The demon king bowed and said, "Your unworthy child captured someone yesterday — a monk from the Great Tang of the Eastern Land.I have often heard people say he is a man who has cultivated through ten lifetimes, and that whoever eats a piece of his flesh will live as long as an ageless immortal of Penglai and Yingzhou.。」Your foolish son dared not eat him alone, and specially invites Father King to share the flesh of the Tang Monk with me, that our lives be extended a thousand years."

:「?」:「。」:「Hearing this, Wukong gave a start and said, "My son, which Tang Monk is this?" The demon king said, "The one journeying to the Western Heaven to fetch scriptures." Wukong said, "My son, could it be Sun Wukong's master?" The demon king said, "Exactly so." Wukong waved his hand and shook his head, saying, "Don't provoke him, don't provoke him.Anyone else you might get away with provoking, but Sun Wukong is not that kind of person. My worthy son, you have never met him — that monkey has vast magic powers and countless transformations. He once wreaked havoc in the Heavenly Palace; the Jade Emperor sent a hundred thousand heavenly soldiers and cast a net of heaven and earth, yet still could not capture him.How dare you eat his master?Send him out quickly and return him — do not provoke that monkey.窿If he finds out you've eaten his master, he won't even bother to fight you — he'll simply jab his gold-banded staff into the mountainside and gouge a hole through it, scooping the whole mountain away.My son, where then would you find a place to settle??」And on whom would I then rely in my old age?"

:「The demon king said, "Father King, what kind of talk is this? Boosting another's ambition while destroying your own child's spirit.使That Sun Wukong has two sworn brothers with him in all — while they were leading the Tang Monk halfway up my mountain, I used a transformation and snatched his master away.He and that Zhu Bajie then came searching to my very gate, spouting some talk of claiming kinship and old acquaintance; I flew into a towering rage and fought him a few rounds — and that's all he amounted to, nothing so remarkable.Zhu Bajie then charged in from the side to help fight, so your child spat out true samadhi fire and burned him into a rout.In his panic he went to ask the Dragon Kings of the Four Seas for rain to help, but that still could not put out my samadhi fire; I scorched him half-senseless, and he hastily sent Zhu Bajie to fetch the Bodhisattva Guanyin of the South Sea.So I disguised myself as Guanyin and lured Zhu Bajie in — he is now hanging in the Ruyi sack, and I mean to steam him too, for the little ones to eat. That Wukong came shouting at my gate again this morning; I gave the order to seize him, and in his panic he threw down even the luggage and fled.。」And so I have just now invited Father King to come and take a look at the living likeness of the Tang Monk, before he is steamed for you to eat, that your life may be extended in eternal youth."

:「。」:「。」:「Wukong laughed and said, "My worthy son, you only know that your samadhi fire defeated him, but you don't know he has seventy-two transformations." The demon king said, "No matter how he transforms, I would still recognize him — I reckon he'd never dare come in through my gate." Wukong said, "My son, though you may recognize him, he won't transform into something large and clumsy like an elephant, for that could hardly fit through your gate;。」:「?」:「if he transforms into something small, though, you'll find it hard to recognize him." The demon king said, "No matter how small he transforms into, I have four or five little demons guarding every single gate here — how could he possibly get in?" Wukong said, "You don't know.?」:「。」He can transform into a fly, a mosquito, a flea, or a bee, a butterfly, a cicada, and the like — and he can even transform into my own appearance. How then would you recognize him?" The demon king said, "Don't worry — even if he had a heart of iron and gall of bronze, he still wouldn't dare come near my gate."

:「。」:「?」:「Wukong said, "Since you put it that way, my worthy son, you truly have great skill and are indeed a match for him, and so you've invited me to eat the Tang Monk's flesh — but it happens that I won't eat it today." The demon king said, "Why not eat it?" Wukong said, "I've grown old of late, and your mother often urges me to do some good deeds.。」:「?」:「。」:「?」:「I've thought that, having no other way to do good, I might as well keep a bit of a fast." The demon king said, "I wonder, Father King, is it a permanent fast or a monthly one?" Wukong said, "Neither a permanent fast nor a monthly one — it's called the Thunder Fast, only four days a month." The demon king asked, "Which four days?" Wukong said, "The three Xin days, plus whenever the sixth falls on one.Today happens to be a Xinyou day — first, it falls on a fast day, and second, one does not receive guests on a You day.。」Just wait until tomorrow, and I'll go scrub him clean myself and steam him, to share with you children then."

:「Hearing this, the demon king thought to himself: "My father king has lived on eating people all his life, and now he's lived over a thousand years — how is it that he's suddenly started keeping fasts?Considering how much evil he did in the past, how could three or four days of fasting possibly make up for it?。」:「?」:「。」:「There's something false in this talk — suspicious, suspicious." He at once slipped away out to the second gate and summoned the six Sturdy Officers to question them: "Where exactly did you invite your Old Great King from?" The little demons said, "We invited him on the road, halfway there." The demon king said, "I did wonder why you came back so fast.?」:「。」:「。」:「?」:「You never even reached his home?" The little demons said, "That's right, we never reached his home." The demon king said, "That's bad — we've been tricked by a fake. This is not the Old Great King." The little demons all knelt down together and said, "Great King, could you not even recognize your own father?" The demon king said, "In looks and manner he resembles him exactly — it's only his words that don't match.I'm afraid we've fallen for a trick and been taken advantage of.使使All of you be on your guard: those who can use knives, draw your blades; those who can use spears, sharpen them bright;使使使使those who can use cudgels, take up your cudgels; those who can use ropes, take up your ropes.Let me go question him again and see what he says.便If he truly is the Old Great King, then never mind not eating today or tomorrow — what harm would it be even to delay a whole month?。」But if his words don't add up, just listen for my grunt of 'Hng!' and then all strike together." The horde of demons each received the order.

The demon king turned back inside again and bowed once more before Wukong.:「Wukong said, "My child, there's no need for such formal ceremony at home — no need to bow.。」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「?」:「Just say whatever it is you have to say." The demon king prostrated himself on the ground and said, "Your foolish son had two purposes in inviting you — first, to offer up the Tang Monk's flesh, and second, there's a matter I wish to ask about: the other day, while I was out riding on auspicious clouds, I went all the way up into the ninth heaven, and there I happened to meet Master Zhang Daoling of the ancestral court." Wukong said, "Could that be Zhang Daoling, the Celestial Master?" The demon king said, "Exactly so." Wukong asked, "What did he say?" The demon king said, "Seeing that your child's five features are well-formed and the three proportions of my face are even, he asked me in what year, month, day, and hour I was born.Your child, being young, could not remember it clearly. The Master is expert in the art of fortune-calculation and wished to calculate my Five Stars for me.That is exactly what I wished to ask Father King about today.。」:「Should I happen to meet him again next time, I could then trouble him to calculate it." Hearing this, Wukong, seated up above, laughed secretly to himself: "What a fine demon this is!Ever since old Sun turned to the fruits of Buddhahood and began escorting Master Tang, I've caught quite a few demons along the way, but none so grasping and cunning as this fellow. If he'd asked me about ordinary household matters, running short of rice or firewood and the like, I could easily have made up some answer off the top of my head.?」:「But now he's asking me his birth year, month, and day — how am I supposed to know that?" But the fine Monkey King was very clever indeed: he sat there imposingly in the middle, showing not the slightest trace of fear, and instead smiled with an air of delight on his face, saying, "Rise, my worthy son.便。」Being old, I've had troubles these past few days that haven't gone as I wished, and I happened to forget the time of your birth — just wait until I go home tomorrow and ask your mother, and you'll know at once."

:「The demon king said, "Father King, you're always talking about my eight birth-characters, saying I'm fated to live as long as heaven itself and never grow old — how could you suddenly forget it today?。」That makes no sense — this must be a fake!" With a grunt of "Hng!", the demon horde closed in with spears and blades, thrusting wildly at Wukong's head and face. 滿The Great Sage used his gold-banded staff to block them, revealing his true form, and said to the demon, "My worthy son, where is the sense in a son beating his own father?" The demon king's whole face flushed with shame, and he dared not look back.Wukong turned into a shaft of golden light and left the demon's cave.:「。」:「The little demons said, "Great King, Sun Wukong has gotten away." The demon king said, "Enough, enough — let him get away then, I've suffered a real loss from this business.便。」Let's just shut the gates and not exchange another word with him — I'll simply go scrub the Tang Monk clean and steam him to eat, and be done with it."

Now to tell of Wukong: hefting his iron staff, laughing heartily, he came from the far side of the ravine.:「?」:「。」:「?」:「Sha Monk heard him and hurried out of the woods to meet him, saying, "Brother, you've only just returned after all this while — why are you laughing so? Have you managed to rescue Master?" Wukong said, "Brother, though I haven't rescued Master, old Sun has gained the upper hand." Sha Monk said, "What upper hand?" Wukong said, "It turns out Zhu Bajie was tricked back by that demon disguised as Guanyin, and is hanging inside a leather sack.I wanted to find a way to rescue him, but it happened that the demon sent his so-called six Sturdy Officers to invite the Old Great King to come eat Master's flesh.Old Sun figured that this Old Great King must be the Bull Demon King, so I transformed into his likeness and passed myself off as him, going in and sitting right in the middle. When he called me Father King, I answered him;便when he kowtowed, I accepted it outright.。」 :「。」:「。」:「It was truly delightful — I really did get the upper hand." Sha Monk said, "Brother, if you go chasing after such petty advantages, I'm afraid Master's life may be hard to preserve." Wukong said, "No need to worry — let me go and invite the Bodhisattva here." Sha Monk said, "But your back still aches." Wukong said, "It doesn't hurt anymore.:『。』。」:「。」:「。」As the ancients said, 'A person's spirits rise when good fortune comes.' You watch over the luggage and the horse, and let me go." Sha Monk said, "You've stirred up his enmity now — I fear he may harm our master, so you must go quickly and return quickly." Wukong said, "I'll be quick about it — it will take no more than the time of a single meal, and I'll be back."

Splendid Great Sage — even as he spoke, he took leave of Sha Monk, mounted his cloud somersault, and headed straight for the South Sea.Up in midair, in less than half an hour, he caught sight of the scenery of Mount Putuo. In a moment he brought his cloud down and arrived right at Mount Luojia's cliff.:「?」:「。」:「。」:「。」Walking along solemnly and properly, he saw the Twenty-Four Devas of Heaven come to greet him, saying, "Great Sage, where are you headed?" Wukong made his bow and said, "I wish to see the Bodhisattva." The Devas said, "Wait a moment, and allow us to announce you." Just then the Deva Mother of Demon Children went to the front of Tidal Sound Cave to report, "May the Bodhisattva know: Sun Wukong has come especially for an audience." Upon hearing the report, the Bodhisattva at once ordered him brought in.The Great Sage straightened his robes, composed his mind in submission, steadied his steps, walked straight inside, and prostrated himself full-length before the Bodhisattva.:「西?」:「The Bodhisattva said, "Wukong, instead of leading Golden Cicada onward to seek scriptures in the West, what brings you here?" Wukong said, "I report to the Bodhisattva: your disciple was escorting Tang Priest onward when we came to a place called Withered Pine Ravine, Fiery Cloud Cave, on Hao Mountain. There is a demon called Red Boy, styled the Sage Child Great King, who has snatched my master away.Your disciple, together with Zhu Wuneng and the others, searched our way to his gate and did battle with him.He unleashed samadhi fire, and we were unable to win, nor could we rescue our master.。」:「?」:「。」:「。」:「I hurried to the Eastern Ocean and invited the Dragon Kings of the Four Seas to bring rain, but even that could not overcome the fire, and I was smoked and scorched until I nearly lost my life." The Bodhisattva said, "Since his was samadhi fire, of such vast power, why did you go ask the Dragon Kings instead of coming to ask me?" Wukong said, "I did originally mean to come, but your disciple was so smoke-choked that I could not ride the clouds, so I sent Zhu Bajie to come invite the Bodhisattva instead." The Bodhisattva said, "Wuneng never came here." Wukong said, "Exactly so.。」Before he could reach your precious mountain, that demon disguised himself as the Bodhisattva and lured Zhu Bajie into the cave instead — he is now hanging inside a leather sack, and the demon means to steam and eat him too."

:「?」Hearing this, the Bodhisattva grew greatly angry at heart and said, "That vile demon dares to disguise himself as me?" With a sound of resentment, she flung the treasure pearl and pure vase from her hand with a splash into the middle of the sea.:「退This gave Wukong such a fright that his hair stood on end and his bones went cold; he at once rose and stood attending below, thinking, "This Bodhisattva's fiery temper hasn't cooled a bit — it seems she blames old Sun for saying the wrong thing and tarnishing her virtue, so she's thrown away her pure vase. What a pity, what a pity!?」If she'd known better, wouldn't giving it to old Sun instead have been a far more sensible thing to do?"

Before he had finished thinking this, he saw the waves in the middle of the sea churn and leap, and the vase came bursting up out of the water. It turned out that a strange creature was carrying it up on its back.Wukong looked closely at the creature carrying the vase, to see what manner of thing it was:

The turtle, bearing the pure vase on its back, crawled up to the edge of the cliff and nodded its head twenty-four times toward the Bodhisattva, in place of twenty-four bows.:「Seeing this, Wukong laughed secretly to himself: "So it's the vase-keeper.。」:「?」:「。」:「。」I suppose when the vase went missing, she simply asked him for it back." The Bodhisattva said, "Wukong, what are you muttering down there?" Wukong said, "Nothing at all." The Bodhisattva ordered, "Bring up the vase." Wukong went at once to pick up the vase.Alas! He could not budge it in the least.便It was just like a dragonfly trying to shake a stone pillar — how could it move even the tiniest bit?:「。」:「Wukong stepped forward, knelt down, and said, "Bodhisattva, your disciple cannot lift it." The Bodhisattva said, "You monkey-head, all you're good for is boasting.?」:「You can't even lift a little vase — how do you expect to subdue demons and bind monsters?" Wukong said, "I won't hide it from the Bodhisattva.Ordinarily I could lift it, but today I cannot.。」:「I suppose having suffered at that demon's hands has weakened my strength." The Bodhisattva said, "Ordinarily it is an empty vase;but now, since the pure vase was thrown down into the sea, in that short time it passed through the Three Rivers and Five Lakes, the Eight Seas and Four Great Rivers, and all the streams, springs, pools, and caverns between, and has borrowed a whole sea's worth of water into itself.Where would you get the strength to bear the weight of an entire sea?。」:「。」That is why you cannot lift it." Wukong pressed his palms together and said, "Indeed, your disciple did not know."

The Bodhisattva stepped forward, lightly lifted the pure vase with her right hand, and rested it upon the palm of her left hand. The turtle then nodded its head and dove back down into the water.:「。」 Wukong said, "So it's just a dull creature kept at home to mind the vase." The Bodhisattva, having settled herself, said, "Wukong, the sweet dew in this vase of mine is not like the Dragon King's private rain — it can extinguish that demon's samadhi fire.I would let you carry it there yourself, but you cannot lift it;I would send Sudhana and the Dragon Girl to go with you, but you have no good intentions and are given entirely to tricking people. If you saw how lovely my Dragon Girl is, and that the pure vase is a treasure besides, and you were to trick them away from me, where would I find the time to go chasing after you to get them back?西。」:「You must leave something behind as a pledge." Wukong said, "Have mercy! The Bodhisattva is far too suspicious.Since I, your disciple, embraced monkhood, I have never done such things again. You tell me to leave something behind as a pledge — but what could I offer?綿This robe of cotton cloth I'm wearing was given to me by you, venerable one. This tiger-skin skirt — how many coppers could it possibly be worth? This iron rod I need morning and night to protect myself. As for this band on my head, it's made of gold, and you used some trick to make it grow fast to my skull — it can't be taken off.If you want a pledge from me now, I'm willing to offer this as collateral.Recite the spell to loosen the band and remove it, then—?」:「otherwise, what else could I possibly offer as a pledge?" The Bodhisattva said, "What an easy life you lead!。」:「I don't want your robe, your iron rod, or your golden band. Just pull out one of those life-saving hairs from the back of your head and give it to me as a pledge." Sun Wukong said, "These hairs were also given to me by you, venerable one.。」:「But I'm afraid that if I pull one out, it will break up the set, and then it won't be able to save my life." The Bodhisattva scolded him, "You monkey!便。」:「You won't even give up a single hair — you make it hard for me, the Merciful One, to be generous either." Sun Wukong laughed and said, "Bodhisattva, you are far too suspicious.』。It is just as they say: 'though you care nothing for the monk's face, spare a thought for the Buddha's.'。」Please, in every way, save my master from this disaster." And so the Bodhisattva:

Sun the Great Sage was overjoyed, and invited Guanyin to leave the Chaoyin Immortal Cave. All the heavenly guardians and great gods stood lined up on Mount Putuo's cliffs.:「。」:「。」:「。」:「The Bodhisattva said, 'Wukong, let us cross the sea.' Sun Wukong bowed and said, 'Please, Bodhisattva, go first.' The Bodhisattva said, 'You go across first.' Sun Wukong kowtowed and said, 'Your disciple dares not display his powers before the Bodhisattva.。」If I were to mount my cloud-somersault, I'd have to bare my body, and I fear the Bodhisattva would blame me for disrespect." Hearing this, the Bodhisattva at once had Shancai and the Dragon Girl go to the lotus pond, pluck off a single petal, and set it on the water beneath the rocky cliff.:「。」:「She told Sun Wukong, 'Step onto that lotus petal, and I will ferry you across the sea.' Seeing it, Sun Wukong said, 'Bodhisattva, this petal is so light and thin — how could it possibly bear my weight? If I take one step and tumble into the water, won't my tiger-skin skirt get soaked? If the tanning salts wash out of it, how will I wear it in the cold weather?" The Bodhisattva snapped, "Just get on and see." Sun Wukong dared not refuse, and risking his life, leapt onto it.Indeed at first it looked small and light, but once he was on top of it, it proved even sturdier than a seagoing ship.:「。」:「?」:「?」:「。」Sun Wukong said happily, 'Bodhisattva, it can carry me!' The Bodhisattva said, 'Since it can carry you, why don't you cross over?' Sun Wukong said, 'But there's no pole, no oar, no sail, no mast — how could I possibly get across?' The Bodhisattva said, 'No need for those.' She simply blew a breath to push it out and draw it back, then blew one solid breath that carried him clear across the bitter sea of the Southern Ocean, until he reached the far shore.:「。」Once his feet touched solid ground, Sun Wukong laughed and said, 'This Bodhisattva is showing off her divine powers, ordering old Monkey about like this without the least effort at all.'

The Bodhisattva instructed all the assembled heavenly beings to guard the immortal realm, and told Shancai and the Dragon Girl to close the cave gate.:「?」。)She then rode her auspicious cloud away from Mount Putuo, and once on the other side called out, 'Where is Hui'an?' Hui'an — the second son of Heavenly King Li the Pagoda-Bearer, known in the secular world as Muzha — was a disciple the Bodhisattva had personally trained; he never left her side, and was called Protector-of-the-Dharma Hui'an the Pilgrim.Hui'an at once pressed his palms together and stood in attendance before the Bodhisattva.:「。」:「?」:「。」The Bodhisattva said, 'Go up to Heaven at once, see your father the king, and ask to borrow his Heaven-Ladle Swords for a while.' Hui'an said, 'How many does my master need?' The Bodhisattva said, 'I need the whole set.'

Having received his orders, Hui'an mounted his cloud and went straight in through the Southern Gate of Heaven to the Cloud Tower Palace, where he bowed before his father the king.:「?」:「。」Seeing him, the Heavenly King asked, 'Where have you come from, my son?' Muzha said, 'My master was invited by Sun Wukong to subdue a demon, and she sent me to pay respects to you, father, and to ask to borrow the Heaven-Ladle Swords for a while.' The Heavenly King at once summoned Nezha to fetch thirty-six of the swords and hand them to Muzha.:「。」Muzha said to Nezha, 'Brother, when you go back, give my respects to Mother — my errand is urgent, so I'll kowtow to her properly once I've delivered the swords.' In great haste they took leave of each other; he brought his auspicious light down and went straight to the Southern Sea, where he presented the swords to the Bodhisattva with both hands.

The Bodhisattva took them in her hands, tossed them up, and recited a spell — and at once the swords transformed into a thousand-petaled lotus throne. The Bodhisattva sprang up onto it and sat squarely in the center.:「使Standing to the side, Sun Wukong laughed inwardly and said, 'This Bodhisattva is so thrifty and sparing.。」:「。」She has a five-colored precious lotus throne right there in her own lotus pond, but couldn't bear to bring it along, and instead had to go borrow one from someone else." The Bodhisattva said, "Wukong, hold your tongue, and follow me." Only then did they all mount their clouds and leave the sea behind. The white parrot spread its wings and flew ahead, with Sun the Great Sage and Hui'an following behind.

In a moment, a mountain peak already came into view.:「Sun Wukong said, 'This mountain is Hao Mountain.。」From here to the demon's gate it's roughly four hundred li or more." Hearing this, the Bodhisattva at once had the auspicious cloud halt, and on the mountaintop recited the spell-word 'Om.'At once, from the left and right of the mountain, many spirits and gods came forth — these were the local earth gods of that mountain — and all came to kowtow beneath the Bodhisattva's precious lotus seat.:「The Bodhisattva said, 'None of you need be alarmed.I have come now to capture this demon king. I want you to clear this entire area for me thoroughly — within a radius of three hundred li, not a single living creature is to remain on the ground.。」退Take the young beasts in their dens and the hatchlings in their burrows, and send them all up to settle safely on the mountain peaks." The assembled gods obeyed and withdrew. In a short while, they returned to report.:「。」The Bodhisattva said, 'Since it's cleared, you may all return to your shrines.' She then tipped over her pure vase, and with a great rushing sound the water poured out like a peal of thunder.Truly it was thus:

:「Seeing this, Sun the Great Sage secretly praised her, saying, 'She is truly a Bodhisattva of great mercy and great compassion!。」:「。」If old Monkey had such magic power, I'd just tip a vase toward the mountain and never worry about any bird, beast, snake, or bug." The Bodhisattva called, "Wukong, hold out your hand." Sun Wukong quickly rolled up his sleeve and held out his left hand. The Bodhisattva plucked a willow twig, dipped it in sweet dew, and wrote the character 'mi' (confusion) on his palm.:「She told him, 'Clench your fist, go quickly to challenge the demon to battle, and you're allowed to lose but not to win.。」Lure him, defeated, back here in front of me, and I will have my own means of subduing him."

Having received his orders, Sun Wukong turned his cloud-light back and went straight to the mouth of the cave. :「。」:「With one hand he made a fist and with the other he wielded his rod, and he shouted loudly, 'Demon, open the door!' The little demons went in again to report, 'Sun the Pilgrim is back again.' The Demon King said, 'Shut the door tight, pay him no mind.' Sun Wukong shouted, 'Fine son you are!?」:「。」:「。」窿You chase your old man out the door, and still won't open up?" The little demons again reported, "Sun the Pilgrim is cursing us with that kind of talk." The Demon King only said, "Pay him no mind." Sun Wukong called out twice, and seeing the door still would not open, he grew furious, raised his iron rod, and with one blow to the door smashed a hole clean through it.:「。」:「In alarm, the little demons stumbled inside, crying, 'Sun the Pilgrim has broken the door!' The Demon King, having heard the reports several times and now hearing the front door was smashed, sprang up at once and leaped outside, leveled his long spear, and cursed at Sun Wukong, 'This monkey doesn't know when to stop.便I let you get away with a little advantage, and still you're not satisfied, and come to bully me again.?」:「?」You smashed my door — what crime should you be charged with?" Sun Wukong said, "My son, you drove your old man out the door — what crime should you be charged with?"

Shamed and enraged, the Demon King seized his long spear and thrust straight at Wukong's chest;Sun Wukong raised his iron rod and blocked, striking back in return.Once they engaged, they fought through four or five rounds, and then Sun Wukong, keeping his fist clenched, dragged his rod, and feigned defeat, retreating.:「。」:「The Demon King stood before the mountain and said, 'I'm going to go finish off Tang Seng.' Sun Wukong said, 'Fine son, Heaven is watching you.。」Come on then." Hearing this, the demon grew even angrier, gave a shout, chased right up to him, leveled his spear and thrust again;Sun Wukong swung his rod, fought a few more rounds, and again feigned defeat and fled.:「?」:「。」:「。」:「。」The Demon King cursed, 'Monkey, before you had the skill to fight twenty or thirty rounds — why is it that now, just when we're really fighting, you want to run? Why is that?' Sun Wukong laughed and said, 'Worthy son, your old man is afraid you'll breathe fire.' The demon said, 'I won't breathe fire — come on and fight.' Sun Wukong said, 'Since you won't breathe fire, then move away a bit — a real man shouldn't fight right at his own front door.' Not realizing this was a trick, the demon really did raise his spear and give chase.Sun Wukong dragged his rod along and opened his clenched fist. The Demon King, now under the spell of confusion, gave chase with all his heart. The one running in front was like a shooting star crossing the sky; the one running behind was like an arrow loosed from a crossbow.

Before long, the Bodhisattva came into view.:「Sun Wukong said, 'Demon, I'm afraid of you now — please spare me.?」You've chased me all the way here to the place of Guanyin Bodhisattva of the Southern Sea — why haven't you turned back yet?" The Demon King did not believe him, and gritting his teeth, kept right on chasing.Sun Wukong gave his body a shake and hid himself within the shadow of the Bodhisattva's divine light. The demon saw that Sun Wukong had vanished.:「?」He stepped up close, opened his eyes wide, and said to the Bodhisattva, 'Are you the reinforcements Sun the Pilgrim invited here?' The Bodhisattva did not answer.:「The Demon King twirled his long spear about and shouted, 'Bah!?」Are you the reinforcements Sun the Pilgrim invited here?" Again the Bodhisattva did not answer. The demon thrust his spear straight at the Bodhisattva's heart. The Bodhisattva transformed into a beam of golden light and shot straight up into the ninefold heavens.:「?」:「。」Sun Wukong followed close behind and said, 'Bodhisattva, it's one thing to trick and put one over on me, but when the demon asked you again and again, why did you pretend to be deaf and dumb and not dare say a word, letting him drive you off with one thrust of his spear, and even abandon your lotus throne?' The Bodhisattva only said, 'Don't speak — let's see what he does next.'

At this time Sun Wukong and Muzha were both up in the sky, watching side by side.:「They saw the demon laugh coldly and say, 'You wretched monkey, you've mistaken your man.He has no idea who he's dealing with in me, Sheng Ying — after failing to beat me in battle several times, he went and invited some good-for-nothing Bodhisattva, and I drove her off without a trace with a single thrust of my spear, and she even left her precious lotus throne behind.。」Let me go up and sit on it a while." What a demon — he too imitated the Bodhisattva, crossing his hands and legs, and sat himself right in the middle of it.:「。」:「?」:「Seeing this, Sun Wukong said, 'Fine, fine, fine — a lotus throne, just given away to someone else!' The Bodhisattva said, 'Wukong, what are you saying now?' Sun Wukong said, 'What am I saying? What am I saying? The lotus throne has been given away to someone else.?」:「。」:「。」:「。」That demon has planted his backside on it — surely you don't mean to still want it back?" The Bodhisattva said, "I want exactly for him to sit on it." Sun Wukong said, "His body is small and neat — he sits on it even more steadily than you do." The Bodhisattva said, "Don't speak, just watch my power."

:「退!」She pointed her willow twig downward and called out, 'Retreat!' At once the lotus throne's flowers and colors all vanished, its auspicious light entirely dispersed — and it turned out the Demon King was sitting on the tips of the swords.:「使。」She at once ordered Muzha, 'Use your demon-quelling pestle and go strike at the sword hilts.' Muzha brought his cloud down and, wielding the demon-subduing pestle as if ramming a wall, pounded away over a thousand times.穿The sword tips pierced clean through both the demon's legs and came out the other side, blood pooling in great gouts as the flesh split open. What a monster — just look at him, gritting his teeth and enduring the pain, he flung down his long spear and used his hands to yank wildly at the swords, trying to pull them out.:「。」:「。」Sun Wukong said, 'Bodhisattva, that monster isn't afraid of pain — he's still pulling at the swords.' Seeing this, the Bodhisattva called to Muzha, 'Don't take his life.' She then lowered her willow twig again and recited the spell-word 'Om,' and all the Heaven-Ladle Swords turned into backward-barbed hooks, like wolf's fangs, so that they could not be pulled free.:「Only then did the demon panic, and clutching at the sword points, he cried out in pain and pleaded, 'Bodhisattva, I, your disciple, had eyes but no pupils, and failed to recognize your vast and boundless power.。」I beg you a thousand times over to show mercy and spare my life — I will never again dare to rely on evil, and I am willing to enter the Dharma gate and take up its precepts."

:「?」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「。」Hearing this, the Bodhisattva, together with the two pilgrims and the white parrot, brought her golden light down and came before the demon, and asked, 'Will you accept my precepts and discipline?' The Demon King nodded, tears falling, and said, 'If you spare my life, I am willing to accept the precepts.' The Bodhisattva said, 'Will you enter my gate?' The Demon King said, 'If you truly spare my life, I am willing to enter the Dharma gate.' The Bodhisattva said, 'Since that is so, I shall shave your crown and administer the precepts to you.' She then took a small golden razor from her sleeve, went up to him, and shaved the monster's head in several strokes, cutting it into the style of 'Mount Tai Pressing Down the Crown,' leaving him three tufts on top, which she gathered up into three coiled horn-like knots.:「西。」:「?」Standing to the side, Sun Wukong laughed and said, 'This demon has terrible luck — made to look neither man nor woman, looking like goodness knows what.' The Bodhisattva said, 'Now that you have accepted my precepts, I won't slight you either — I shall call you Boy Shancai. How is that?' The demon nodded and accepted, hoping only that his life would be spared.:「退!」The Bodhisattva then pointed with her hand and called out, 'Withdraw!' With a clattering sound, all the Heaven-Ladle Swords fell away into the dust, and the boy's body was left unharmed.

:「。」The Bodhisattva said, 'Hui'an, take these swords up to the Palace of Heaven and return them to your father the king. Don't come to fetch me — go first to Mount Putuo to join the assembled heavenly beings and wait there.' Muzha received his orders, delivered the swords up to Heaven, and returned to the sea — no more of that for now.

:「Now to tell of the boy — his wild nature was still unsettled, and seeing that his legs, which had hurt, no longer hurt, and his backside, which had been torn, was no longer torn, though his hair was now done up in three tufts, he went and snatched up his long spear again, and said to the Bodhisattva, 'What real magic power was there to subdue me?It was nothing but some sleight-of-hand trick.!」I won't accept any precepts — take this spear!" And he thrust straight at the Bodhisattva's face. This so enraged Sun Wukong that he swung up his iron rod, ready to strike.:「。」:「The Bodhisattva only called out, 'Don't strike — I have my own way of dealing with him.' She then took out from her sleeve a golden band and said, 'This treasure was originally given to me by our Buddha Tathagata, when I was sent to the Eastern Lands to find the pilgrim who would fetch the scriptures — three bands: the Golden, the Tight, and the Restraining. The Tight-Fillet Band I already gave to you to wear;the Restraining Band I used on the great god who guards the mountain;。」:「!」:「!」and this Golden Band I have never yet been willing to part with — but seeing how insolent this monster is now, I shall give it to him." What a Bodhisattva — she shook the band once in the wind and called out, "Change!" At once it turned into five separate bands, which she flung toward the boy's body, shouting, "Fasten!" One slipped onto the top of his head, two onto his left and right hands, and two onto his left and right feet.:「。」:「?」:「。」The Bodhisattva said, 'Wukong, step back a bit, while I recite the Golden-Band spell.' Sun Wukong panicked and said, 'Bodhisattva, I invited you here to subdue a demon — why would you want to recite a spell on me?' The Bodhisattva said, 'This spell is not the Tight-Fillet spell to bind you — it is the Golden-Band spell to bind that boy.' Only then did Sun Wukong set his mind at ease, and he stayed close by her side, listening as she recited the spell. The Bodhisattva formed a mudra with her fingers and silently recited the spell several times over, and the demon rubbed his ears and cheeks, drew his feet together, and rolled about on the ground in pain.Truly it was just as the saying goes:

In the end, we do not know how the boy came to submit and take refuge — please listen to the explanation given in the next chapter.

What it’s about

Wukong reaches the Southern Sea and appeals to Guanyin, who responds angrily when she hears that Red Boy counterfeited her appearance. She empties an entire sea into her vase, has Wukong carry it until compassion makes it light, and travels to the demon's mountain. There she turns lotus petals into a platform of blades and lets Red Boy believe he has seized her empty seat; when the points pierce him, he is trapped despite all his transformations and boasts.

Still defiant, Red Boy attacks with spear and fire, so Guanyin places five golden bands upon his limbs. At her command they tighten and force his hands together in an involuntary posture of worship. The demon finally submits and becomes Shancai, the Good-Wealth Child who attends the Bodhisattva. Wukong returns to the cave, frees Tripitaka and Bajie, and the reunited pilgrims leave the ravine while their former enemy follows Guanyin toward a religious life.

When it was written 背景

This 回 completes the Red Boy arc by replacing destruction with conversion: Guanyin does not merely extinguish the fire but redirects the demon's fierce energy into service. Her vase, lotus throne and binding bands turn recognizable devotional objects into instruments within an earthy comic battle, a blend typical of the novel. Learners who have just watched Wukong's resourcefulness fail can see the hierarchy of power clearly here, while the forced gesture of prayer raises the chapter's characteristic tension between compassionate salvation and coercive discipline.
