The Red Boy's Samadhi Fire Defeats Monkey
第041回Chapter 41
Now to tell of Sun Dasheng, who led Bajie away from Sha Seng, leapt across Withered Pine Brook, and went straight to the front of that strange rocky cliff. Sure enough there was a cave-dwelling there, and truly its scenery was extraordinary.
As they drew near the gate, they saw a stone tablet inscribed with eight large characters: 'Fiery Cloud Cave, Withered Pine Brook, Mount Hao.' Over to one side a band of little demons were swinging spears and waving swords, leaping about and playing in the wind.
Sun Dasheng called out sternly in a loud voice, 'You little ones, go quickly and report to your cave master, and tell him to send out my master Tang Seng, so as to spare the lives of every spirit in this cave;牙迸半個『不』字,我就掀翻了你的山場,屣平了你的洞府。」 if so much as half the word "no" escapes his teeth, I'll overturn your mountain grounds and level your cave-dwelling flat!' When the little demons heard this, they hastily turned and fled back into the cave, shut the two stone doors, and went inside to report: 'Great King, disaster!'
Now to tell of the fiend: ever since he had carried Sanzang into the cave, he had stripped off his clothes and trussed him up hand and foot in the back courtyard like a hog for market, and had ordered the little demons to fetch clean water to scrub him, meaning to steam him in a basket and eat him. Suddenly hearing the report of disaster, he left off the scrubbing for the moment and came to the front hall to ask, 'What disaster?' The little demon said, 'There's a hairy-faced monk with a thunder-god's beak of a mouth, together with a monk with a long snout and big ears, at the gate demanding some master Tang Seng of theirs. And they say that if so much as half the word "no" comes out, they'll overturn the mountain grounds and level the cave-dwelling flat.' The demon king gave a faint cold laugh and said, 'That would be Sun Xingzhe and Zhu Bajie — well, they certainly know how to track people down. I seized their master from halfway up the mountain, a good hundred and fifty li from here — how could they have found their way right to my door?' He told the little ones to have those in charge of the carts push the carts out. That band of little demons pushed out five small carts and opened the front gate.
Bajie, watching from afar, said, 'Brother, this fiend must be afraid of us — he's pushing out carts to move his things away.' Xingzhe said, 'No, just watch and see where he puts them.' Sure enough, the little demons set the carts down in the positions of Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth, leaving five demons to watch over them while the other five went in to report. The demon king asked, 'Is everything ready?' They answered, 'Ready.' He ordered his spear brought to him. Among the band of little demons in charge of weapons, two of them carried out a Fire-Tipped Spear eighteen feet long and handed it to the demon king. The demon king swung his spear and strode forth; he wore no armor at all, only a brocade battle-skirt bound about his waist, and barefoot, he walked out before the gate. Xingzhe and Bajie raised their heads to look, and saw the monster:
That fiend Red Boy came out the gate and called loudly, 'Who is it shouting outside my door!' Xingzhe stepped forward and said with a laugh, 'Worthy nephew, don't play tricks with me. This very morning you hung high from the top of a pine tree beside the mountain path, looking like a thin, sickly, sallow-faced child, and fooled my master. I, out of goodwill, carried you on my back, and you conjured up a wind and snatched my master away. Now you've taken on this shape again — how could I not recognize you? Send out my master at once, and don't turn pale-faced and break off our kinship — I fear if your father hears of it, he'll blame old Monkey for bullying the young with my seniority, which wouldn't look right at all.' When the fiend heard this, he was furious at heart, and shouted with a snort, 'You wretched ape! What kinship do I have with you? You stand here spouting nonsense — what kind of tune are you singing? Who is your "worthy nephew"?' Xingzhe said, 'Brother, it's just that you don't know. Back in the day when I became sworn brothers with your father, you weren't even around yet — who knows where you were.' The fiend said, 'This monkey talks more and more nonsense! Where are you from, and where am I from — how could you possibly be sworn brothers with my father?' Xingzhe said, 'You simply don't know. I am none other than Sun Wukong, the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, who wreaked havoc in Heaven five hundred years ago. Back before I made trouble in Heaven, I traveled everywhere to the ends of the sea and edges of the sky, through all Four Great Continents, leaving no place unvisited, and in those days I loved nothing better than seeking out heroes and men of mettle. Your father, called Niu Mowang, styled himself the Great Sage Who Levels Heaven, and joined with old Monkey and others to become sworn brothers, seven in all, with him made the eldest brother;還有個蛟魔王,稱為覆海大聖,做了二哥;there was also the Flood Dragon Demon King, styled the Great Sage Who Overturns the Sea, made the second brother;又有個大鵬魔王,稱為混天大聖,做了三哥;and there was the Roc Demon King, styled the Great Sage Who Confounds Heaven, made the third brother;又有個獅㾩王,稱為移山大聖,做了四哥;and there was the Lion King, styled the Great Sage Who Moves Mountains, made the fourth brother;又有個獼猴王,稱為通風大聖,做了五哥;and there was the Macaque King, styled the Great Sage Who Reaches the Wind, made the fifth brother;又有個狨王,稱為驅神大聖,做了六哥;and there was the Ape King, styled the Great Sage Who Drives Away Spirits, made the sixth brother;惟有老孫身小,稱為齊天大聖,排行第七。only old Monkey, being small in stature, was styled the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, and ranked seventh. When we old brothers were carousing together in those days, you hadn't even been born yet.'
When the monster heard this, he was in no mood to believe it, and raised his Fire-Tipped Spear to thrust at once. Xingzhe was indeed a seasoned hand who never lost his composure — he shifted his stance and dodged the spear-point, then swung up his iron rod and cursed, 'You young beast, you don't know your betters — watch the rod!' The fiend, too, shifted his stance and dodged the iron rod, saying, 'Wretched macaque, you don't know how the wind blows — watch the spear!' The two of them, kinship forgotten, both changed countenance at once, each calling on his own magic powers, and leapt up into the clouds — a fine fight indeed:
The demon and Sun Dasheng fought through twenty bouts without either gaining the upper hand. Watching from the side, Zhu Bajie saw clearly that although the fiend was not losing ground, he was only parrying and blocking, with no ability at all to attack;行者縱不贏他,棒法精強,來往只在那妖精頭上,不離了左右。and though Xingzhe was not defeating him either, his rod-technique was superb and fierce, coming and going always about the fiend's head, never straying far to either side. Bajie thought to himself secretly, 'This is no good — Xingzhe is so nimble that any moment now he'll feign an opening, lure the fiend in, and fell him with one blow of the rod, and then I'll get no credit at all.' Just watch him now, rousing his spirits, raising his nine-toothed rake up in the air, and striking straight for the fiend's head. When the fiend saw this his heart was startled, and hastily dragging his spear, he broke off and fled the field in defeat. Xingzhe shouted, 'Bajie, after him, after him!'
The two of them chased him all the way to the front of his cave gate, and there they saw the fiend standing on the middle one of the small carts, holding up his Fire-Tipped Spear in one hand;一隻手捏著拳頭,往自家鼻子上搥了兩拳。with the other hand clenched into a fist, he struck himself twice on his own nose. Bajie laughed and said, 'This wretch is shameless, resorting to such dirty tricks. I suppose you mean to bash your nose bloody, smear your face red, and go off somewhere to lodge a complaint against us?' The fiend struck himself twice more, recited a spell, and spewed fire from his mouth, while thick smoke burst from his nostrils; with a blink of his eyes, flames sprang up all together, and fire and light surged up from all five carts. He spewed several more mouthfuls, and a great red blaze burned up into the sky, wrapping the whole Fiery Cloud Cave in smoke and flame — truly it scorched the heavens and set the earth ablaze. Bajie panicked and said, 'Brother, this is bad — if we plunge into that fire, there's no hope of coming out alive. They'd turn old Pig into a roast, season him with spices, and let him enjoy the feast. Run, run!' No sooner had he said 'run' than, giving no thought to Xingzhe at all, he dashed back across the brook.
But Xingzhe, whose magic powers were vast, formed the fire-avoiding sign with his fingers and plunged straight into the fire to search for the fiend. When the fiend saw Xingzhe coming, he spewed out several more mouthfuls, and the fire grew even fiercer than before.好火:Such fire:
Xingzhe, buffeted by the swirling smoke and flame, could not find the fiend, nor could he see the path before the cave gate, and so he withdrew and leapt out of the fire. The fiend, watching clearly from the gate, saw that Xingzhe had gone, and only then withdrew his fire-tools, led his band of demons back into the cave, and shut the stone doors, believing he had won the victory; he had the little ones set out a banquet and play music, in joy and laughter — but no more of that for now.
Now to tell of Xingzhe: he leapt back across Withered Pine Brook and brought his cloud down, and heard Bajie and Sha Seng talking loudly together among the pines. Xingzhe came forward and shouted at Bajie, 'You wretched fool, with not a shred of manly spirit. You were so afraid of the demon-fire that you fled for your life, and abandoned old Monkey. It's a good thing I have some sense of direction.' Bajie laughed and said, 'Brother, that fiend had you pegged right — you truly don't know how the wind blows. The ancients said, "He who understands the times is called a hero." That fiend has no kinship with you, yet you insisted on claiming kinship;既與你賭鬥,放出那般無情的火來,又不走,還要與他戀戰哩。」 once he set to fighting you and let loose such merciless fire, you still wouldn't run, but wanted to keep on fighting him.' Xingzhe said, 'How does that monster's skill compare to mine?' Bajie said, 'Not as good.' 'And his spear-technique, compared to mine?' Bajie said, 'Not as good either. Old Pig, seeing he couldn't hold out, came to help you with a blow of my rake, but I never expected he wouldn't know when a joke was a joke, and just broke and fled the field, and heaven help us, then set loose the fire.' Xingzhe said, 'That's exactly it — you shouldn't have come.我再與他鬥幾合,我取巧兒撈他一棒,卻不是好?」If I'd fought him a few more rounds, I could have found my chance and landed a blow on him — wouldn't that have been better?'
The two of them went on and on discussing the fiend's skill, talking about the viciousness of his fire. Sha Monk, leaning against a pine root, laughed until he looked quite foolish. Xingzhe saw this and said, 'Brother, what are you laughing at?你好道有甚手段,擒得那妖魔,破得那火陣?I suppose you have some skill of your own, that you could capture that fiend and break his array of fire? This matter concerns the benefit of us all. As the saying goes, 'Many hairs bunched together make a ball.' If you could catch the fiend and save our master, that too would be a great merit to your name.' Sha Seng said, 'I have no particular skill either, nor can I subdue the fiend. I was laughing because you two are both flustered.' Xingzhe said, 'How am I flustered?' Sha Seng said, 'That fiend's skill is not equal to yours, his spear-technique is not equal to yours — it's only that he has the extra advantage of fire, and so you cannot win. If you go by what your little brother says, and catch him by the principle of mutual generation and mutual overcoming, what difficulty could there be?' When Xingzhe heard this, he laughed heartily and said, 'Brother speaks with reason — we really were flustered, and forgot about this. Reasoning by the principle of mutual generation and mutual overcoming, water must be used to overcome fire. So where might we find some water to douse this demon-fire — wouldn't that save our master?' Sha Seng said, 'Exactly so, no need to hesitate.' Xingzhe said, 'You two just stay here, and don't go seeking battle with him; let old Monkey go to the Eastern Ocean to borrow dragon troops, and fetch some water to douse the demon-fire and capture this wretched fiend.' Bajie said, 'Go with an easy mind, brother — we understand.'
Splendid Great Sage — he mounted his cloud and left that place, and in an instant reached the Eastern Ocean; but he had no heart to admire the sea's scenery, and used a water-repelling spell to part the waves. Just as he was going along, he happened upon a sea-patrolling yaksha, who, seeing it was Sun Dasheng, hurried back to the Crystal Palace to report to the old Dragon King. Ao Guang at once led his dragon sons and grandsons, shrimp soldiers and crab troops, all together out the door to welcome him, and invited him inside to sit. Once seated and the courtesies exchanged, tea was served. Xingzhe said, 'No need to trouble with tea — there is a matter I must trouble you with. My master Tang Seng, on his way to the Western Heaven to worship Buddha and fetch the scriptures, passed by Fiery Cloud Cave at Withered Pine Brook on Mount Hao, where a fiend named Red Boy, styled the Great King Sacred Infant, seized my master and carried him off. Old Monkey tracked him to the cave and fought with him, but he let loose fire. We could not withstand him, and thinking that water overcomes fire, I have come specially to ask you for some water — to bring down a great rain for me, douse that fire, and save Tang Seng from this calamity.' The Dragon King said, 'Great Sage, you are mistaken — if you wish to obtain rainwater, you ought not to have come to ask me.' Xingzhe said, 'You are the Dragon King of the Four Seas, in charge of rain and moisture — if I don't ask you, then whom should I ask?' The Dragon King said, 'Though I am in charge of rain, I dare not act on my own authority. I must have an edict from the Jade Emperor, instructing which place, how many feet and inches of rain, and at what hour it is to begin and end; and the Three Officials must take up their brushes, the Taiyi must issue the documents, and orders must be given to the Duke of Thunder, the Mother of Lightning, the Earl of Wind, and the Cloud Boy. As the common saying goes, 'A dragon cannot move without clouds.'' Xingzhe said, 'I have no need of wind, cloud, thunder, or lightning — I only want some rainwater to put out the fire.' The Dragon King said, 'Great Sage, if you have no need of wind, cloud, thunder, or lightning, still I alone cannot lend enough strength. How would it be if my younger brothers joined in to help the Great Sage with this task?' Xingzhe said, 'Where are your younger brothers?' The Dragon King said, 'Ao Qin, Dragon King of the Southern Sea; Ao Run, Dragon King of the Northern Sea; and Ao Shun, Dragon King of the Western Sea.' Xingzhe laughed and said, 'If I have to travel through three more seas, I might as well go up to Heaven and beg an edict from the Jade Emperor.' The Dragon King said, 'There's no need for the Great Sage to go anywhere — if I merely strike the iron drum and golden bell here, they will arrive in an instant.' Hearing this, Xingzhe said, 'Old Dragon King, quickly strike the drum and bell.'
In a moment, the Dragon Kings of the three seas came crowding in, asking, 'Elder brother, what task have you for us younger brothers?' Ao Guang said, 'Sun Dasheng is here to borrow rain to help subdue a fiend.' The three younger brothers were then brought in for introductions, and once done, Xingzhe explained fully the matter of borrowing water. All the gods gladly agreed, and at once mustered:
There is a poem as proof. The poem goes:
Xingzhe, leading the dragon troops, before long had already reached Withered Pine Brook on Mount Hao. Xingzhe said, 'Honored kinsmen of the Ao clan, I am sorry to trouble you to travel so far. This place belongs to a demon fiend — please wait for now up in the air, and do not show yourselves. Let old Monkey fight him first; if I defeat him, there'll be no need for you gentlemen to capture him;若輸與他,也不用列位助陣。and if I lose to him, there's likewise no need for you gentlemen to join the fray. Only, whenever he lets loose fire, listen for my call, and all spew down rain together.' The Dragon Kings all agreed to the order.
Xingzhe then brought down his cloud and entered the pine forest, and seeing Bajie and Sha Seng, called out, 'Brothers.' Bajie said, 'Brother, you've come back quickly. Did you manage to bring the Dragon Kings?' Xingzhe said, 'They've all come. You two must be very careful — I'm afraid the rain will be heavy, so don't let the luggage get wet. Let old Monkey go and fight him.' Sha Seng said, 'Go with an easy mind, elder brother — we understand it all.'
Xingzhe leapt across the brook, arrived at the gate, and called out, 'Open the door!' The little demons again went to report, 'Sun Xingzhe has come again.' Red Boy tilted back his head and laughed, saying, 'That monkey must not have been burned to death in the fire, and so he's come again. This time I certainly won't spare him — I'll burn him till his skin is charred and his flesh rotten, and only then will I stop.' He leapt up at once, leveled his long spear, and ordered, 'You little ones, push out the fire-carts.' He came out before the gate and said to Xingzhe, 'Why have you come again?' Xingzhe said, 'Give me back my master.' The fiend said, 'You monkey-head, utterly unable to adapt to circumstances. That Tang Seng can serve as your master, and he can just as well serve as my side-dish for wine — and you still think you'll get him back? Don't even dream of it, don't even dream of it.' When Xingzhe heard this, he grew extremely angry, drew out his gold-banded rod, and struck straight for his head;那妖精使火尖槍,急架相迎。the fiend wielded his Fire-Tipped Spear and hastily raised it to block and meet him. This bout of fighting was different from before. A fine battle:
The demon king fought with Xingzhe through twenty rounds, and seeing he could not win, feinted with his spear, hastily withdrew, clenched his fist, and struck his nose twice more, whereupon fire spewed out; smoke and flame burst up from the carts before the gate, and red flames flew up from his mouth and eyes. Sun Dasheng turned his head and called out, 'Where are the Dragon Kings?' The Dragon King brothers led their host of water folk and spewed rain down into the fiend's fire and flame.好雨!Such rain! Truly it was:
That rain, pattering down both fine and heavy, could not manage to quench the fiend's fire. It turned out that the Dragon Kings' private rain could only put out ordinary mortal fire — how could it ever douse the fiend's true samadhi fire? It was just like pouring oil on a fire — the more it was doused, the fiercer it burned.
The Great Sage said, 'Let me form the magic sign and plunge into the fire.' He swung his iron rod, seeking the fiend to strike him. When the fiend saw him coming, he spewed a mouthful of smoke straight into his face. Xingzhe hastily turned his head away, but was so smoked that his eyes blurred and swam, and he could not keep tears from falling like rain. For it turned out that the Great Sage did not fear fire — he only feared smoke. Long ago, when he made havoc in Heaven, Laojun had put him in the Eight Trigrams Furnace to smelt him; fortunately he took shelter in the Xun position, and was not burned to injury. But the wind stirred the smoke about him, and it smoked his eyes into Fiery Eyes and Golden Pupils — and that is why, to this very day, he fears only smoke. That demon spouted out another mouthful, and the Great Sage could not withstand it, so he turned his cloud and fled. The demon king, for his part, put away his fire-tools and returned to his cave dwelling.
The Great Sage, his whole body wreathed in smoke and fire, scorched and unable to bear it, went straight to the mountain stream to douse the flames. Who could have known that, forced by the cold water, the fire-vapors attacked his heart, and his three hun-souls left their dwelling. Alas—his breath choked in his chest, throat and tongue turned cold, his soul scattered and his spirits fled, as though his remaining life were lost. In alarm, the Dragon Kings of the Four Seas, up in mid-air, withdrew their rain and cried out loudly: "Marshal Tianpeng, General Curtain-Raiser, do not hide yourselves in the forest—go and find your elder brother-disciple."
Hearing themselves called by their sacred titles, Bajie and Sha Seng hastily untied the horse, shouldered the pole and load, and dashed out of the forest, heedless of the mud, searching along the stream bank. There, at the upper reaches, the waves were churning and rolling, and down the rushing current came a person floating. When Sha Seng saw this, he leapt into the water clothes and all, and carried the figure ashore—it was none other than the body of Sun the Great Sage. Look at him—his four limbs curled up and unable to stretch, his whole body cold as ice from head to foot. Sha Monk, tears streaming from his eyes, said: "Elder Brother, what a pity for you—a guest of boundless years who never grew old, now turned into a man cut down in the midst of his journey." Bajie laughed and said: "Brother, don't cry. This monkey is only pretending to be dead, trying to scare us. Feel him, feel him—is there still a bit of warmth left over his chest?" Sha Seng said: "His whole body has gone cold; even if there's a trace of warmth, how could that bring him back to life?" Bajie said: "He has seventy-two transformations, so he has seventy-two lives. You take hold of his feet, and let me arrange him." Sure enough, Sha Seng took hold of the feet while Bajie supported the head, and they stretched him out straight, then propped his feet up and set him sitting cross-legged. Bajie rubbed his two hands hot, pressed them over the seven orifices, and performed a massage meditation technique. It turned out that Sun the Novice, forced by the cold water, had his breath blocked at the cinnabar field, and so could make no sound. Fortunately, thanks to Bajie's pressing and rubbing, in a moment his breath passed through the Three Passes, circled the Bright Hall, and burst open the orifices, and he cried out: "Master!" Sha Seng said: "Brother, in life you thought of the Master, and in death he is still on your lips. Wake up now—we are here." Sun the Novice opened his eyes and said: "Are you two brothers here? Old Sun has suffered a loss." Bajie laughed and said: "You've only just come around from your faint—if old Pig hadn't saved you, you'd already have been settled, and yet you still haven't thanked me."
Sun the Novice then rose up, and, raising his face, said: "Where are the Ao brothers?" The Dragon Kings of the Four Seas answered from mid-air: "Your little dragons are here in attendance." The Novice said: "I have troubled you to come from afar, yet we have not achieved success—please return for now, and I shall thank you another day." The Dragon Kings led their water tribes and withdrew in a great throng, and no more is said of that.
Sha Seng supported the Novice, and together they went to sit beneath the pine forest. After a while, once he had steadied his spirit and settled his breath, he could not stop tears from trickling down his cheeks. Again he called out: "Master!
Sha Seng said: "Elder Brother, do not grieve for now. Let us quickly settle on a plan, go somewhere to request troops and aid, and rescue the Master." The Novice said: "Where could we go to ask for help?" Sha Seng said: "At the very beginning, the Bodhisattva instructed that we protect Tang Seng, and she promised us: call upon Heaven and Heaven shall answer, call upon Earth and Earth shall answer. Where should we go to ask for rescue?" The Novice said: "I recall that when old Sun made great havoc in Heaven, none of those divine soldiers could withstand me. This demon's magic powers are no small thing—it must take someone with skill greater than old Sun's to subdue him. The heavenly gods are of no use, the earthly spirits cannot manage it; if we are to capture this demon, we must go and request the Bodhisattva Guanyin—that alone will do. But my flesh aches and is numb, my waist and knees are in pain, and I cannot mount the somersault cloud—how then can I go to make the request?" Bajie said: "Whatever instructions you have, let me go and make the request." The Novice laughed and said: "Very well, you are the one who can go. When you see the Bodhisattva, whatever you do, do not look up at her—only lower your head and bow in worship. When she asks, tell her the place-name and the demon's name, and then request her help in rescuing our Master. If she is willing to come, she will surely capture the monster." Hearing this, Bajie at once mounted the clouds and mist and set off toward the south.
Meanwhile, that demon king in his cave was rejoicing, saying: "Little ones, Sun Wukong has suffered a loss and gone off. Though this bout did not kill him, no doubt it has left him badly dazed. I fear only that he may go to request rescue troops. Quickly open the gate, and let me go see whom he requests."
The demon host opened the gate, and the demon ran out into the sky to look, and saw Bajie heading off to the south. The demon thought to himself that there was nowhere else to the south—he must certainly be going to request the Bodhisattva Guanyin. He hastily brought his cloud down and called: "Little ones, dig out my magic pouch for me. It has not been used in a long while, so I fear the drawstring may not be sturdy—change it for a new one, and set it at the second gate. Wait till I have lured Bajie back here, put him inside the pouch, and steam him till tender, to reward you all." It so happened that this demon owned a wish-fulfilling leather pouch. The little demons brought it out, changed the drawstring, and set it inside the cave gate—no more to be said of that.
Now, that demon king had long dwelt in this place and knew every road well-trodden; he knew which road led quickly to the Southern Sea, and which led the long way round. So he took the shorter road, rode his cloud, and overtook Bajie, then sat himself down composedly upon a cliff face, transformed into the likeness of a false Bodhisattva Guanyin, and waited there for Bajie.
That fool, just then riding his cloud along, suddenly caught sight of the "Bodhisattva" ahead. How could he tell true from false? This is a true case of "worshipping the image as though it were the Buddha." The fool halted his cloud, came down, and bowed in worship, saying: "Bodhisattva, disciple Zhu Wuneng kowtows to you." The demon said: "You are not escorting Tang Seng to fetch the scriptures—why come to see me instead?" Bajie said: "Disciple, while traveling with my master midway, we came upon a demon of Haohan Mountain, Withered Pine Stream, Fiery Cloud Cave, called Hong Hai'er, who has abducted my master. It was I and my elder brother-disciple who sought him out at his door and fought with him. It turned out he could summon fire, and in the first bout we could not gain the victory. In the second bout, we asked the Dragon Kings to help with rain, but even that could not put out the fire. My elder brother-disciple was burned and injured by him, and cannot move, so he sent me, disciple, to request the Bodhisattva. I beg most humbly for your mercy, to save my master from this calamity." The demon said: "The master of that Fiery Cloud Cave is not one who harms living beings—surely you must have offended him." Bajie said: "I did not offend him; it was my elder brother-disciple Wukong who offended him. He had transformed into a small child, hung upon a tree, to test my master. My master, being very kind-hearted, told me to cut him down, and had my elder brother-disciple carry him a stretch of the way. It was my elder brother-disciple who flung him down once, whereupon he stirred up a whirlwind and abducted my master." The demon said: "Rise, and follow me into that cave to see its master—I shall put in a kind word for you; you need only offer an apology, and then you may ask for your master to be released." Bajie said: "Bodhisattva, if you are willing to give me back my master, I would even be willing to kowtow to him." The demon king said: "Follow me."
That fool, not knowing good from ill, followed him straight back along the very road he had come, and instead of heading to the Southern Sea, made his way to the gate of Fiery Cloud, arriving at the entrance in an instant. The demon went in ahead and said: "Do not be suspicious. He is an old friend of mine—come in." The fool had no choice but to step through the gate. The demons all at once raised a shout, seized Bajie and threw him down, stuffed him into the pouch, drew the drawstring tight, and hung him high upon the ridge-beam. The demon then resumed his true form, sat himself in the middle, and said: "Zhu Bajie, what skill do you have, that you dare escort Tang Seng to fetch the scriptures? That you dare request the Bodhisattva to subdue me? You stare with your two wide-open eyes, and still don't recognize that I am the Great King Sheng Ying. Now that I have caught you, I'll hang you up for three to five days, then steam you tender and reward my little demons with you, as a relish to go with their wine." Hearing this, Bajie cursed from inside: "Vile monster! Utterly without manners. If, for all your countless schemes, you manage to trick me and eat me, I'll see to it that every last one of you comes down with a swollen-headed plague." The fool cursed on and on, and clamored on and on—no more to be said of that.
卻說孫大聖與沙僧正坐,只見一陣腥風,刮面而過,他就打了一個噴嚏道:「不好,不好!Meanwhile, the Great Sage Sun and Sha Seng were sitting together when suddenly a gust of foul, fishy wind blew across their faces, and he sneezed, saying: "Bad, bad! This gust bodes more ill than good—I suspect Zhu Bajie has taken the wrong road." Sha Seng said: "If he took the wrong road, could he not ask someone?" The Novice said: "He must have run into a demon." Sha Seng said: "If he ran into a demon, could he not run back?" The Novice said: "Something is not right. You sit here and keep watch, while I go across the stream to listen for news." Sha Seng said: "Elder Brother's waist still aches—I fear you may again fall into his hands; let your little brother go instead." The Novice said: "You won't manage it—better let me go."
Good Sun the Novice—gritting his teeth, enduring the pain, gripping his iron rod, he crossed the stream, came before the Fiery Cloud Cave, and shouted: "Vile fiend!" The little demon guarding the gate hurried in again to report: "Sun the Novice is at the gate shouting again." The demon king gave orders to seize him. That band of little demons, spears and blades bristling, raised a shout together, threw open the gate, and all cried: "Seize him, seize him." The Novice, being truly worn out, dared not meet them head-on; he darted aside off the path, recited a spell, and cried: "Change!"—and at once transformed himself into a gold-brocade bundle. The little demons, seeing it, picked it up and carried it inside, reporting: "Great King, Sun the Novice took fright—no sooner had someone shouted the word 'seize' than he flung down his bundle in panic and fled." The demon king laughed and said: "That bundle can't hold anything of much value—no doubt it's just the monk's ragged robe and old hat; carry it in and unpick it to make patch-linings." One little demon indeed carried the bundle inside, not knowing it was a transformation of the Novice. The Novice thought: "Good—now this gold-brocade bundle is carried inside." That demon paid it no further mind, and left it lying just inside the gate.
Good Sun the Novice—false within false, empty within empty: he plucked out a strand of hair, breathed a puff of magic breath upon it, and transformed it into the very likeness of the bundle;他的真身卻又變作一個蒼蠅兒,釘在門樞上。while his true body transformed into a fly, and clung to the door-pivot. There he heard only Bajie moaning and groaning within, his voice unclear, sounding just like a sickly pig. The Novice buzzed off to search, and found that Bajie was hanging there inside the leather pouch. The Novice clung to the pouch, and went on listening as Bajie cursed on and on, calling the demon every foul name: "How dare you falsely transform into the Bodhisattva Guanyin, to trick me into coming back, hang me up here, and still talk of eating me? One day my elder brother-disciple will—
Hearing this, the Novice secretly laughed and thought: "This fool, though he's suffering and stifled in there, still hasn't lowered his flag and spear. Old Sun is bound to capture this fiend;若不如此,怎生雪恨。」if I do not, how could I ever wash away this grudge?"
Just as he was devising a way to rescue Bajie, he heard the demon king call out: "Where are my Six Champions?" There were at that time six little demons who were his intimate, cherished spirits, made Champions, each with a name: one called Cloud-in-Mist, one called Mist-in-Cloud;一個叫做急如火,一個叫做快如風;one called Swift-as-Fire, one called Fast-as-Wind;一個叫做興烘掀,一個叫做掀烘興。one called Rousing-Blaze-Stirring, one called Stirring-Rousing-Blaze. The Six Champions came forward and knelt. The demon king said: "Do you know where the Old Great King's family lives?" The Six Champions said: "We know." The demon king said: "Go for me through the night to invite the Old Great King, and tell him that I have here caught Tang Seng, to steam and offer him, so that he may extend his life a thousand ages." The six fiends, receiving the order, went dragging and pulling at one another straight out through the gate. The Novice buzzed once, flew down off the pouch, and followed close after the six fiends, slipping away from the cave.
Just how they went to fetch him, in the end, you shall hear explained in the next chapter.

What it’s about
Wukong learns that Red Boy is the son of his old sworn brother, the Bull-Demon King, and goes to the Fire-Cloud Cave hoping kinship will secure Tripitaka's release. Red Boy rejects the claim, and Wukong changes into the Bull-Demon King to deceive him, but an incautious answer about Princess Iron-Fan exposes the disguise. Battle follows, and the demon breathes out the Samadhi True Fire that neither Wukong's transformations nor the Dragon Kings' rain can quench.
Wukong is badly scorched and falls senseless into a stream before Bajie revives him. Bajie then sets out to seek Guanyin, but Red Boy intercepts him disguised as the Bodhisattva and carries him back to the cave. Sha Wujing and Wukong can rescue neither master nor brother, so the chapter closes with the company divided and Red Boy preparing his captives for a feast, his childlike shape now matched by cunning as formidable as his supernatural fire.
When it was written 背景
This middle chapter of the Red Boy ordeal turns a claimed family connection into another failed stratagem and establishes why ordinary elemental answers cannot defeat the demon: dragon rain only feeds his transcendent fire. It also gives Bajie a characteristic mixture of loyalty and credulity, since he genuinely goes for help but trusts a familiar sacred appearance too quickly. Learners should track the several kinds of recognition in the episode—Wukong recognizing lineage, Red Boy detecting an impostor, and Bajie failing to detect one—as the plot prepares for the real Guanyin's arrival.
