The Red Boy Captures Tang Sanzang

040Chapter 40

Now we tell how the Great Sage Sun and his two brothers brought their cloud down. They went straight into the court, where the ruler, his ministers, and the crown prince, in group after group, bowed in welcome and offered thanks.Xingzhe recounted to the ruler and his ministers the whole affair of the Bodhisattva subduing the demon and capturing the monster, and every one of them bowed low in homage without end.:「。」:「?」:「?」Just as they were all in the midst of celebrating, they heard the eunuch official come to report: "Your Majesty, outside there are four more monks come again." Bajie was alarmed and said, "Elder brother, could it be that the demon is working some trick, falsely posing as Manjusri Bodhisattva to fool us, and has now transformed into monks again to come and match wits with us?" Xingzhe said, "How could there be such a thing?" He at once ordered them summoned in to be looked over.

The assembled civil and military officials passed on the order, bidding them enter. When Xingzhe looked, it turned out to be the monks of Baolin Temple, carrying in the phoenix-soaring cap, the jasper belt, the ochre-yellow robe, and the carefree shoes.:「。」Xingzhe was greatly delighted and said, "Well timed, well timed." He then had the Daoist attendant come forward, removed his head-wrap, and put the phoenix-soaring cap on him;穿took off his cloth robe and dressed him in the ochre-yellow robe;untied his sash and fastened on the jasper belt;pulled off his monk's shoes and put him in the carefree shoes;殿and had the crown prince bring out the white jade tablet and place it in his hands: at once they invited him up to the throne hall to be styled sovereign.:「。」:「Truly, as the old saying goes: "The court cannot go a single day without a ruler." But that emperor was unwilling in any way to take the seat; weeping, he knelt on the floor of the hall and said, "I have already been dead three years, and now, thanks to my master's saving me back to life, how would I dare presumptuously claim the throne again;。」I beg one of you masters to become the ruler, and I would gladly take my wife and children outside the city walls to live as a commoner — that would satisfy me." But Tripitaka would in no way accept, his heart set only on worshipping the Buddha and seeking the scriptures.:「They then asked Xingzhe, and Xingzhe laughed and said, "Not to hide it from you all, if old Monkey were willing to be an emperor, I would have been emperor of every nation and every province under Heaven by now. It's only that we've grown used to being monks, and are lazy and unrestrained by nature. Were I to become emperor, I would have to keep my hair long, not sleep at dusk, and not rest even at the fifth watch;hearing of border troubles, my heart and spirit would be uneasy;seeing famine and disaster, I would be helplessly consumed with worry. How could we ever get used to that?。」殿You go on being your emperor, and I'll go on being my monk, off to cultivate my merit and practice." The king pleaded and yielded until he could do no more, and so at last mounted the jeweled throne, faced south and styled himself sovereign, granted a general amnesty to the realm, and bestowed titles and rewards on the monks of Baolin Temple before sending them back.Only then did he open the eastern pavilion and hold a banquet for Tang Monk.殿At the same time he issued a decree summoning painters to paint portraits of the master and his three disciples, to be enshrined and honored in the Hall of Golden Bells.

Once the master and disciples had settled the affairs of the kingdom, they were unwilling to linger long, and wished to take leave of the royal carriage and press onward to the west. The emperor, together with the three consorts and queens, the crown prince, and all the officials, offered the treasures that guarded the nation, along with gold, silver, and fine silks, to the master in gratitude for his kindness.Tripitaka would not accept a single fraction of it, insisting only that his travel rescript be renewed, and urging Wukong and the others to saddle the horse and set out early. The king, feeling most uneasy at this, had the full royal procession arranged and invited Tang Monk to sit in it, with the two ranks of civil and military officials leading the way; he himself, together with the three consorts and queens and the whole family of the crown prince, personally pushed the carriage wheels and escorted them out beyond the city walls, and only then descended from the dragon carriage to bid them farewell.:「西。」:「。」The king said, "Master, on the day you return with the scriptures from the Western Heaven, you must by all means come once more through my humble domain." Tripitaka said, "Your disciple shall obey this command." The emperor, his eyes brimming with tears, then returned with his officials.

Tang Monk and his three disciples, four monks in all, took to the sheep-gut mountain road, their hearts set single-mindedly on paying homage at Vulture Peak.It was just the season when autumn was ending and winter beginning; behold:

Master and disciples left the Kingdom of Wuji, traveling by night and resting by dawn — or rather, resting by night and traveling by dawn — and after more than half a month, they suddenly saw before them a tall mountain, one that truly seemed to scrape the sky and block out the sun.On his horse Tripitaka's heart was seized with fear, and he hastily reined in and called out to Xingzhe.:「?」:「。」:「。」Xingzhe said, "Master, what are your instructions?" Tripitaka said, "Look, ahead there is another great mountain with steep ridges; we must be careful and guard against it, for I fear some evil creature may again come to trouble us." Xingzhe laughed and said, "Just keep walking and don't fret so much — old Monkey will see to our protection." The elder could only set his mind at ease, and whipping his horse onward, they rode up to the mountain crags, which indeed proved exceedingly steep and forbidding.Behold:

Just as master and disciples were filled with dread, they suddenly saw in a mountain hollow a wisp of red cloud rise straight up into the ninth heaven, gathering itself into a mass of fiery vapor.:「。」Xingzhe was greatly alarmed; he went up close, seized Tang Monk by the leg, and pushed him down off the horse, calling out, "Brothers, don't go any farther, a demon is coming!" This threw Bajie into such a panic that he snatched up his rake, while Sha Monk hastily wielded his treasure staff, and together they shielded Tang Monk in the middle.

Let the story now divide into two threads. To tell now of that red glow — within it there truly was a demon.西Some years before, he had heard people say that the Tang Monk of the Land of the East, traveling to the Western Heaven for the scriptures, was none other than Elder Golden Cicada reborn, a good man who had cultivated through ten lifetimes, and that whoever ate a single piece of his flesh would gain extended life and long years, sharing an age equal to Heaven and Earth.Day after day he waited in the mountains, never expecting that today the Tang Monk would actually arrive. He was up in mid-air just then observing, when he saw the three disciples shielding Tang Monk on his horse, each of them braced and ready.:「This spirit could not stop praising him, saying, "What a fine monk!Just now I saw a fair-faced, plump monk riding the horse — truly he must be the sacred monk of the Tang court — but how is it he's now being guarded by three ugly monks? Each of them has his sleeves rolled back and fist extended, each gripping a weapon, as if ready to fight someone.Ai!I don't know which of them has sharp eyes and must have recognized me.。」:「At this rate, there's no hope of getting to eat the Tang Monk's flesh." He pondered for a good while, and, questioning his own heart within his heart, reasoned it out for himself: "If I try to seize him by force, I'll never be able to get near him;but if I deceive him with an appearance of goodness, I may yet get him into my hands.Only if I can fool his heart into being taken in — then, from within that appearance of goodness, I'll create my opening, and I shall surely catch him.。」Let me go down and play a trick on him first."

What a fine demon! He at once dispersed the red glow and brought his cloud down to land.:「!」Going down into the mountain slope, he shook his body and transformed into a seven-year-old child, stark naked with no clothing on his body, bound hand and foot with hempen rope, and hung high up in the top of a pine tree, crying out again and again, "Help! Someone save me!"

Now to tell how the Great Sage Sun suddenly raised his head and looked again, and saw that the red cloud had entirely scattered and the fiery vapor was completely gone. :「?」:「He then called out, "Master, please mount up and let's be on our way." Tang Monk said, "You said a demon was coming — how is it you now dare to travel on?" Xingzhe said, "Just now I saw a wisp of red cloud rise up from the ground and gather in the sky into a mass of fiery vapor — that was certainly a demon. But now that the red cloud has scattered, it must have been some passing demon, one who dared not harm anyone.。」:「?」:「Let's be on our way." Bajie laughed and said, "Elder brother's words are always so clever — since when does a demon go 'passing by'?" Xingzhe said, "You wouldn't know about that.西When the demon king of some mountain or cave holds a banquet and invites the spirits of all the other mountains and caves to attend the gathering, then indeed spirits from the four directions — east, west, south, and north — will all come to attend. That's why this one had his heart set only on attending the banquet, and no intention of harming anyone.。」This was simply a demon passing through."

Hearing this, Tripitaka was half convinced and half doubtful, but he had no choice but to grip the saddle and mount the horse, and they went on along the road toward the mountain ahead.:「!」:「?」:「Just as they were traveling on, they suddenly heard a voice cry out, "Save me!" The elder was greatly startled and said, "Disciple, here in the middle of this mountain, whose voice is that calling out?" Xingzhe came forward and said, "Master, just keep walking and pay no attention to any 'man-sedan,' 'mule-sedan,' 'bright sedan,' or 'sleeping sedan.'。」:「。」:「。」In a place like this, even if there were a sedan chair, there'd be no one to carry you in it." Tang Monk said, "I don't mean a sedan chair for carrying — I mean a voice calling out for help." Xingzhe laughed and said, "I understand — don't concern yourself with other people's business, let's just keep going."

Tripitaka followed his words and urged the horse onward again.:「!」:「They had not gone a full mile when they again heard the cry, "Save me!" The elder said, "Disciple, this voice does not sound like that of a ghost or demon. If it were a ghost or demon, once it cried out there would be no answering echo. You hear him cry out once, and then cry out again — this must surely be a person in distress.。」:「We ought to go and save him." Xingzhe said, "Master, for today, please set aside your compassionate heart a little; once we're past this mountain, you may resume your compassion. This place bodes far more ill than good. You know the saying about things that lean on grass and cling to wood — that any object can cultivate itself into a spirit. All other kinds are manageable enough, but there is one kind — the python — that, once it has cultivated itself over long years and many days into a spirit-demon, becomes highly skilled at knowing people's childhood names. If it is hiding in the grass, or in some mountain hollow, and calls out a person's name once, it is fine so long as the person does not answer;but if the person answers even once, it will snatch away that person's primal spirit, follow along that very night, and is certain to take the person's life.Let's just keep going, keep going.:『。』。」As the ancients said: 'Once you've escaped, give thanks to the gods.' On no account should we heed him." The elder had no choice but to comply, and once again whipped the horse onward.

:「In his heart Xingzhe thought secretly, "This wretched demon, I don't know where he is, keeps calling out over and over.』,。」:「。」使Let old Monkey give him a dose of the 'Rabbit-and-Rooster Star Technique,' and make the two of them never lay eyes on each other." That fine Great Sage called Sha Monk to come forward: "Lead the horse and walk on slowly — let old Monkey step aside a moment to relieve himself." Watch him: he let Tang Monk go on ahead a few steps, then recited a spell and used the technique of moving mountains and shrinking the earth, pointing his gold-banded cudgel backward — and in that instant master and disciples had passed over that mountain peak and gone on ahead, leaving the monster behind.

He then strode out again and caught up with Tang Monk, hurrying on along the mountain road together.:「!」:「Just then Tripitaka again heard, from behind the mountain, a voice crying out, "Save me!" The elder said, "Disciple, that person in distress has very poor luck indeed, never managing to encounter us — we've already passed him by.。」 :「。」Listen, he's calling out behind the mountain now." Bajie said, "He might still be in front of the mountain — it's just that the wind has shifted direction now." Xingzhe said, "Never mind whether the wind's shifted or not, let's just keep going." And so, with that, none of them spoke further, each wishing they could cross this mountain in a single stride — but we need say no more of that for now.

Now to tell how the demon, there on the mountain slope, cried out three or four times in a row, yet still no one came.:「In his heart he thought to himself, "I reckoned the Tang Monk was here, and watching him he seemed no more than three miles off — how is it, after all this time, he still hasn't arrived?。」Perhaps he took a shortcut and went around." He gave his body a shake, slipped free of the ropes, and once more sent up his red glow, rising into the sky to look again.:「。」Before he knew it, the Great Sage Sun turned his face up and looked back, and recognized him at once as the demon; again he seized Tang Monk by the leg and pushed him down off the horse, saying, "Brothers, careful, careful, that demon is coming again!" This threw Bajie and Sha Monk into such alarm that each seized his rake or staff, and once more shielded Tang Monk in their midst.

:「When the spirit saw this, up in mid-air he could not stop marveling, saying, "What a fine monk!Just now I saw that fair-faced monk sitting on the horse — how is it he's been hidden away again by these three? This time I'll only know for certain once I get a look face to face.I must first bring down the sharp-eyed one, and only then can I capture the Tang Monk;。」otherwise, I'll waste all my scheming and get nothing for it, and all my trouble and eagerness will come to nothing." So he brought his cloud down once more, and just as before, transformed himself and hung high up in the top of a pine tree, waiting. This time it was not even half a mile away.

Now to tell how the Great Sage Sun raised his head and looked again, and saw that the red cloud had once more scattered; he again asked the master to mount the horse and go on ahead.:「?」:「。」:「Tripitaka said, "You said the demon was coming again — how is it you're now asking me to travel on again?" Xingzhe said, "This is still just a passing demon, one who dares not provoke us." The elder grew angry once more and said, "You wretched ape, you're making a great fool of me.Right where there truly is a demon, you say there's nothing wrong;and in a peaceful spot like this, you instead frighten me, constantly clamoring on about some demon or other.More false alarms than true, and regardless of the seriousness, you seize me by the leg and throw me off the horse — and now you explain it all away as some 'passing demon.'……」:「If I had fallen and been injured, it would hardly sit right with you — such conduct, such conduct..." Xingzhe said, "Master, don't be angry with me — if you'd fallen and injured your hands or feet, that could still be treated;?」but if you were snatched away by a demon, where would we ever go looking for you?" Tripitaka, greatly enraged, muttered furiously and was about to recite the tight-fillet spell. But it was Sha Monk who pleaded earnestly, so that in the end Tripitaka had no choice but to mount the horse and go on again.

:「!」He had not yet even settled himself in the saddle when again a voice cried out, "Master, save me!" The elder raised his head to look, and saw it was indeed a small child, hanging stark naked from a tree.便:「He reined in the horse and scolded Xingzhe, saying, "You wretched ape, how utterly perverse you are, without a shred of kindly intent, your heart set on nothing but reckless violence! When I said that the sound of someone calling was a human voice, you went on and on, insisting over and over it was a demon.?」覿Look — isn't that a person hanging in that tree?" Seeing his master scolding him so, the Great Sage looked closely and saw the very shape of a child before him; first, because he could not openly take action, and second, because he feared the tight-fillet spell being recited, he lowered his head and dared not answer back again, letting Tang Monk go up to the foot of the tree.:「The elder pointed with the tip of his whip and asked, "Whose child are you?And for what reason are you hung up here?。」Tell me, so that I may save you." Ah!Clearly this was a spirit-demon, transformed into this very shape, yet the master, being but a mortal of flesh and ordinary eyes, could not recognize him for what he was.

Seeing himself questioned so, the demon only played his false part all the more, and with tears welling in his eyes, called out, "Master, ah, west of this mountain there is a stream called Withered Pine Ravine, and on the far side of that stream there is a village — I am from a family of that place. My grandfather's surname was Hong, and because he had amassed vast stores of gold and silver, with a family fortune worth countless thousands, he was nicknamed 'Hong the Millionaire.'He grew old and passed from this world long ago, and the family estate was left to my father. In recent times, given to extravagant living, the family fortune gradually dwindled, and he changed his name to 'Hong the Hundred-Thousandaire.'He made it his particular business to befriend bold fellows from every direction, lending out gold and silver in hopes of interest. But little did he know that those without scruple would swindle it away from him, so that neither principal nor interest was ever returned. My father then swore a great oath never to lend out another cent. Those who had borrowed gold and silver from him, being poor and left with no other recourse, banded together into a vicious gang, and in broad daylight, torches and weapons in hand, stormed our gate and plundered all our wealth and goods without mercy;they killed my father;and seeing that my mother had some beauty, they carried her off to make her some bandit chief's mountain-stronghold wife.At that time, my mother could not bear to leave me behind, and clutching me in her arms, weeping bitterly and trembling with fear, followed the bandits along.Never did we expect that, arriving in this mountain, they would want to kill me too.It was only thanks to my mother's desperate pleading that I was spared death by the blade, but instead they bound me with rope and hung me up in this tree, meaning for me to freeze and starve to death. As for my mother, those bandits carried her off somewhere — I have no idea where.I have been hanging here for three days and three nights now, and not a single person has come this way.Who could have known what merit I stored up in some past life, that in this one I would meet a venerable master? If you would show great mercy and save my life, letting me return home, I would sell myself into servitude to repay your kindness.使。」Even if my face were covered with yellow dust in death, I would never dare forget it.

When Tripitaka heard these words, he took them for truth, and told Bajie to loosen the ropes and bring him down.便That idiot, unable to tell friend from foe, was about to step forward and set to work.:「Wukong, standing by, could not help but shout: "You vile thing! There is one here who knows you for what you are — don't keep spinning empty lies and cheating people with falsehoods. If your family's wealth was truly plundered, your father hurt by bandits, and your mother carried off, whom would we save you to hand you over to?What would you give me in thanks?。」That lie has come apart at the seams!" When the demon heard this, its heart was struck with fear, for it knew the Great Sage was a being of great power, and secretly took note of him.:「。」:「?」:「Yet it went on trembling, and said with tears falling: "Master, though my parents are lost and my family's wealth all gone, there is still some land and property untouched, and my relatives are all still living." Wukong said, "What relatives do you have?" The demon said, "My grandfather's house is south of the mountain, my aunt lives north of the ridge, Li Si by the stream is my uncle by marriage, Hong San in the woods is my clan elder, and there are also uncles and cousins living all around this very village.。」If you, venerable master, would consent to save me, once we reach the village and I see all my relatives, I will tell them one by one of your saving grace, sell off some of the land, and repay you many times over."

:「When Bajie heard this, he pulled Wukong back and said, "Brother, he's just a small child — why do you keep interrogating him so?He said it was bandits who only plundered his movable valuables — surely they couldn't have carried off the house and the land as well?If we go tell his relatives, even with our great appetites we couldn't eat up the value of ten mu of his land.。」使Let's save him and bring him down." That idiot, thinking only of food, cared nothing for right or wrong, and used his monk's blade to cut the ropes, setting the demon down. The demon knelt before Tang Seng's horse with tears streaming, kowtowing over and over. :「The elder, being tender-hearted, said, "Child, climb up on the horse — I will take you with me." The demon said, "Master, ah, my hands and feet are numb from hanging, and my waist and hips ache;。」besides, I'm a country person and not used to riding horses." Tang Seng told Bajie to carry him on his back.:「The demon glanced sideways and said, "Master, my skin is all chafed raw — I dare not ask this master to carry me.。」:「。」:「His mouth is long and his ears are big, and the bristles on the back of his neck are stiff — they would jab and frighten me." Tang Seng said, "Then let Sha Wujing carry you." The demon glanced sideways again and said, "Master, when the bandits came to rob my house, every one of them had painted faces and fake beards, and carried knives and clubs.。」They frightened me terribly, and seeing this master with the unlucky-looking face, my soul would flee at once — I dare not ask him to carry me either." Tang Seng then told Sun Wukong to carry him.:「。」Wukong laughed heartily and said, "I'll carry him, I'll carry him." The demon secretly rejoiced, and readily let Wukong carry him.

Wukong pulled him aside off the road and tested his weight — he weighed only about three catties and ten-odd taels.:「Wukong laughed and said, "You vile monster, today you've courted death — how dare you play tricks in front of old Sun?。」:「』?」:「?」:「。」:「?」:「。」 I recognize you for what you really are." The demon said, "I am the child of a good family, unfortunate enough to meet with this great calamity — how could I be some 'thing'?" Wukong said, "If you're truly the child of a good family, why are your bones so light?" The demon said, "My frame is small." Wukong said, "How old are you this year?" The demon said, "I am seven." Wukong laughed and said, "A year should add a catty of weight, so at seven you ought to weigh seven catties — how is it you don't even weigh four?" The demon said, "I lost my mother's milk young." Wukong said, "Very well, I'll carry you — but if you need to relieve yourself, you must tell me."

Tripitaka then went ahead with Bajie and Sha Seng, while Wukong carried the child on his back behind them, and the whole party headed west. There is a poem as proof. The poem says:

:「The Great Sage Sun, carrying the demon on his back, grumbled inwardly at Tang Seng for not knowing hardship: "Walking this steep and perilous mountain terrain is hard enough empty-handed, yet he makes old Sun carry someone.。」便使便Never mind whether this fellow is a demon or not — even if he were truly a good person, having lost his parents, we don't know to whom we should deliver him; better to just dash him to death." The monster, however, had already sensed this, and used its magic power to draw in breath from the four directions, four mouthfuls in all, and blew it onto Wukong's back, making it suddenly feel a thousand catties heavy.:「。」Wukong laughed and said, "My child, ah, you're using the weighting technique to press down on your old grandfather." When the demon heard this, fearing the Great Sage might harm it, it performed the technique of shedding its corpse, releasing its primal spirit, which leapt up and stood still in the ninefold heavens.Meanwhile the weight on Wukong's back grew heavier still. The Monkey King, enraged, seized the body and flung it down hard onto a jagged rock by the roadside, smashing the corpse into something like a meat patty.Still fearing it might work more mischief, he went so far as to tear off its four limbs and toss them to either side of the road, all shattered to pieces.

:「The creature, watching clearly from midair, could not suppress the fire rising in its heart, and said, "This monkey monk is thoroughly vicious — even supposing I were a demon out to harm your master, you hadn't yet seen how I meant to strike, so how could you injure me like this?Fortunate it was that I had the foresight to release my spirit and escape;otherwise, this would have been killing without cause.。」If I don't seize this chance to capture Tang Seng now, and let the opportunity slip again, I'll only be teaching him to grow more wary." The fine monster then, right there in midair, whipped up a whirlwind, and with a whoosh it roared out, tearing up stones and flinging sand — truly fierce and savage.A fine wind:

It blew so hard that Tripitaka could barely keep his seat on the horse, Bajie dared not lift his eyes, and Sha Seng bowed his head and covered his face. The Great Sage Sun knew at once it was the monster working its wind magic, and hurried forward in pursuit, but the demon had already ridden the gust and carried Tang Seng off — vanished without a trace, no telling in which direction, nowhere to search or follow.

After a while, the wind died down, and the sunlight grew bright again.Wukong came forward to look, and saw the white dragon horse trembling and neighing in fright, the luggage load thrown down by the roadside, Bajie lying prostrate under a cliff groaning, and Sha Seng crouched before the slope, calling out.:「。」:「!」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「?」:「。」Wukong shouted, "Bajie!" That idiot, hearing Wukong's voice, raised his head to look, and finding the wild wind now calm, scrambled up and grabbed Wukong, saying, "Brother, what a terrible wind that was!" Sha Seng too came forward and said, "Brother, that was a whirlwind." Then he asked, "Where is Master?" Bajie said, "The wind came on so fierce that we all covered our heads and shielded our eyes, each hiding from the storm on our own — Master was lying flat on the horse too." Wukong said, "So where has he gone now?" Sha Seng said, "He's like a lamp-wick made of rush pith — I fear he's been swept away by the wind."

:「。」:「Wukong said, "Brothers, from here we ought to go our separate ways." Bajie said, "Just so — the sooner we disperse, the better, each to find his own path.西?」:「That road to the Western Heaven is endless without limit — when could we ever arrive?" When Sha Seng heard this, he was struck with alarm, his whole body numb, and said, "Elder brother, what sort of talk is this you're speaking?西Because we sinned in a former life, we were fortunate to receive the guidance of the Bodhisattva Guanyin, who touched our crowns, bestowed the precepts on us, changed our dharma names, and brought us to take refuge in the fruit of Buddhahood, willing to protect Tang Seng on his journey west to worship the Buddha and seek the scriptures, to atone for our sins through merit.?」:「Now, arriving here today, to abandon it all in an instant and speak of each going his own way — would that not violate the Bodhisattva's good design, ruin our own virtue, and invite people's ridicule, saying we had a beginning but no end?" Wukong said, "Brother, what you say is right too, but it can't be helped — Master would not listen to what people told him.I, old Sun, have fiery golden eyes and can tell good from bad. That wind just now was worked by the child hanging from the tree.I knew he was a demon, but you two didn't recognize it, and Master didn't either — he took him for the child of a good family and made me carry him on my back.It was old Sun who schemed to do away with him, and he used the weighting technique to press down on me.So I smashed him to pieces.使He must have then used the corpse-shedding technique again, whipped up a whirlwind, and carried off my master. That's why I blamed you both for never listening to me, and so my resolve grew cold and my heart discouraged, and I said we should each go our own way.退。──?」:「Since you, worthy brother, have such sincere intentions, you put old Sun in a bind of indecision.── Bajie, what exactly do you intend to do?" Bajie said, "I just spoke rashly and said a few wrong things a moment ago — truly we shouldn't disperse.。」:「。」Brother, there's nothing else for it — let's follow Brother Sha's words, and go find that demon to rescue Master." Wukong then turned his anger to joy and said, "Brothers, let us join hearts together again, gather up the luggage and the horse, go up the mountain to search out the monster, and rescue Master."

The three of them, clutching at vines and creepers, worked their way along slopes and across streams, and after traveling some fifty or seventy li, still found no news at all.On that mountain there was not a single bird or beast to be seen, only old cypresses and tall pines constantly in view.:「!」The Great Sage Sun grew truly anxious at heart, and with a leap of his body sprang up onto the steep and towering peak, shouting "Change!" — transforming into three heads and six arms, in the very image of his form when he wreaked havoc in Heaven.西He gave his golden-hooped cudgel a shake, turning it into three golden-hooped cudgels, and with a clattering, crashing din struck one path to the east, one path to the west, flailing wildly without pause on both sides.:「。」Seeing this, Bajie said, "Sha Monk, this is bad — elder brother, unable to find Master, has worked himself into a fit of rage-madness."

:「。」:「?」:「Wukong went on striking for a while, and struck out a whole crowd of impoverished spirits, all clad in tattered scraps, robes without seams, trousers without crotch or waist, who knelt before the mountain and cried, "Great Sage, the mountain gods and local earth spirits have come to see you." Wukong said, "How is it there are so many mountain gods and local spirits?" The spirits kowtowed and said, "We report to the Great Sage: this mountain is called Hao Mountain, Drill-Head Peak, six hundred li around. We are each in charge of ten li — one mountain god per ten li, one local spirit per ten li — thirty mountain gods and thirty local spirits in all.。」:「Yesterday we already heard that the Great Sage had come, but because we could not all assemble at once, our greeting was delayed, causing the Great Sage to grow angry — we beg forgiveness ten thousand times over." Wukong said, "I'll spare you your offense for now.?」:「Let me ask you: how many demons are there on this mountain?" The spirits said, "Oh, lord!。」:「?」:「There is only the one demon, but he has worn our very heads bald, leaving us without incense or paper offerings, without a drop of blood sacrifice — each of us with barely enough clothing to cover our bodies or food to fill our mouths — how could there be more demons than that to feed?" Wukong said, "Does this demon live in front of the mountain, or behind it?" The spirits said, "He lives neither in front of nor behind the mountain. In this mountain there is a stream called Withered Pine Stream.Beside the stream there is a cave called Fiery Cloud Cave.In that cave there is a demon king of vast magical power, who constantly seizes us mountain gods and local spirits and makes us tend his fires and stand watch at his gate, ringing bells and calling the watch for him through the night.。」 And the little demons besides demand their regular tribute money from us." Wukong said, "You are spirits of the shadowy realm — what money would you have?" The spirits said, "Exactly so, we have no money to give him, so we must catch a few mountain roe deer or wild deer, morning and night, to placate the pack of demons;and if we have nothing to offer, they come and tear down our shrines and strip off our robes, leaving us no peace at all.。」:「?」:「We beg the Great Sage ten thousand times to wipe out this monster for us and save the living creatures of this mountain." Wukong said, "Since you are under his control and are often at his cave, do you know what sort of demon he is, and what he is called?" The spirits said, "Speaking of him, perhaps the Great Sage already knows. He is the son of the Bull Demon King, born of Princess Iron Fan.使He once cultivated for three hundred years at Flaming Mountain, refining the samadhi true fire, and so possesses vast magic power as well; the Bull Demon King sent him here to guard Hao Mountain.。」His childhood name is Hong Hai'er, and his title is Great King Sacred Infant."

When Wukong heard this, his heart filled with joy. :「He dismissed the local spirits and mountain gods, resumed his true form, leapt down from the peak, and said to Bajie and Sha Seng, "Brothers, set your minds at ease — worry no more, Master will surely not lose his life, for this demon is a relative of old Sun's." Bajie laughed and said, "Brother, don't tell tales.西?」:「You are from the Eastern Continent of Superior Body, and this place is the Western Continent of Cattle-Gift — the distance between is vast, separated by ten thousand waters and a thousand mountains, and two stretches of ocean besides — how could you be related to him?" Wukong said, "Just now that whole crowd were the local spirits and mountain gods of this region — I asked them the origin of the demon, and they said he is the son of the Bull Demon King, born of Princess Iron Fan, named Hong Hai'er, titled Great King Sacred Infant.I recall that five hundred years ago, when old Sun wreaked havoc in Heaven, I traveled to every famous mountain under heaven, seeking out the great heroes of the earth, and the Bull Demon King once swore brotherhood with old Sun, as one of seven sworn brothers.Among those five or six demon kings, old Sun alone was the smallest and most nimble in build, and so the Bull Demon King was addressed as eldest brother. Now this demon is the Bull Demon King's son, and I am acquainted with his father — reckoning it properly, I am still his elder uncle — how would he dare harm my master?。」:「:『Let's go at once, without delay." Sha Seng laughed and said, "Brother, ah, as the saying goes: 'Three years without a visit, and even kin become strangers.'?」:「You parted from him five or six hundred years ago, and have never exchanged so much as a cup of wine since, nor sent any gift on festival occasions — how would he acknowledge any kinship with you there?" Wukong said, "How can you size people up like that?:『。』As the saying goes: 'A single leaf of duckweed returns to the great sea — in life, where might people not meet again?' Even if he doesn't acknowledge the kinship, he surely wouldn't harm my master.。」I don't expect him to lay out a banquet in welcome, but he ought at least to return Tang Seng to me whole and unharmed."

The three brothers, each with sincere hearts, led the white horse, its back loaded with the luggage, and made straight for the main road, pressing onward.Without regard for day or night, they traveled some hundred li or so, when suddenly they saw a pine grove, within which ran a winding stream, and below the stream clear emerald water flowed swiftly; at the head of the stream there was a stone slab bridge, leading to a cave-dwelling on the other side.:「Wukong said, "Brothers, look — there are jagged stone cliffs over there; that must surely be the demon's dwelling place.Let us all discuss together: who will stay to watch over the luggage and the horse??」:「。」:「。」:「。」Who is willing to come with me to subdue the demon?" Bajie said, "Brother, old Zhu has never had the patience to sit still — I'll go with you." Wukong said, "Good, good." He told Sha Seng, "Hide the horse and luggage deep in the woods, and guard them carefully; wait while the two of us go to the gate to seek out Master." Sha Seng obeyed the order.Bajie followed along, and together with Wukong, each grasping his weapon, they went forward.Truly:

In the end, whether this journey brings good fortune or ill is not yet known; listen to the explanation in the next chapter.

What it’s about

Past the Black-Rooster Kingdom the pilgrims come to Withered-Pine Ravine on Roaring Mountain, where the demon Red Boy hangs himself in a treetop and cries for help, playing a child snatched by bandits. Wukong's fiery eyes see the demon at once and he warns Tripitaka, but the soft-hearted monk insists on rescuing the child and orders Wukong to carry him down the road on his back.

Watching for his chance, Red Boy makes himself suddenly heavy, wrenches free of Wukong's grip in a whirlwind, and snatches Tripitaka clean away toward his cave. Red Boy is the son of the Bull-Demon King and Princess Iron-Fan and has perfected a deadly Samadhi True Fire; the pilgrims, thinking they face another child-shaped roadside trap, have in fact walked into one of the hardest ordeals of the whole journey.

When it was written 背景

This 回 opens the Red-Boy arc, three chapters that will nearly defeat Wukong and end only when Guanyin herself subdues the child-demon. It reworks a familiar trap, a helpless figure by the road who is really a monster, and marks it as different by naming Red Boy's parentage and his fire. Learners should note that this is the natural edge of the covered chapters: the story breaks off here on purpose, mid-arc, with Tripitaka just taken and the Samadhi Fire still to come in the chapters beyond.
