Monkey Revives the Drowned King of Wuji

039Chapter 39

:「。」:「?」:「。」:「Now it tells how the Great Sage Sun, unable to bear the pain in his head, pleaded, "Master, stop reciting, stop reciting — let me heal him instead." The elder asked, "How will you heal him?" Pilgrim said, "Only by going down to the underworld to search out which King of the Underworld holds his soul, and bringing it back to save him." Eight Rules said, "Master, don't believe him."。」"He originally said there was no need to go to the underworld, that he could revive him right here in the world of the living, to show off his skill." The elder, swayed by this ill wind, began reciting the Tight-Fillet Spell again. :「。」:「。」:「。」:「。」 Panicked, Pilgrim hastily confessed, "I'll heal him in the world of the living, I'll heal him in the world of the living!" Eight Rules said, "Don't stop — keep reciting, keep reciting!" Pilgrim cursed, "You foolish beast, you're egging Master on to curse me!" Eight Rules laughed so hard he fell over, saying, "Brother, oh brother, you only know how to torment me, but didn't know I could torment you a little too." Pilgrim said, "Master, stop reciting, stop reciting — let old Monkey heal him here in the world of the living." Sanzang said, "How can you heal him in the world of the living?" Pilgrim said, "I'll now somersault-cloud straight through the Southern Gate of Heaven, without entering the Dipper-and-Ox Palace, without going into the Hall of Miraculous Mist, but go directly up to the thirty-third heaven, to the Tushita Palace in the Heaven of Departed Grief, to see Taishang Laojun, and beg from him one pill of his Nine-Turn Life-Restoring Elixir — that will surely save him."

:「。」:「Hearing this, Sanzang was overjoyed and said, "Go at once, and come back quickly." Pilgrim said, "It's about the third watch now — by the time I get back, it will be near dawn."It's only that this man lying here, cold and desolate, hardly looks presentable.便。」:「。」:「"There needs to be a mourner watching over him and weeping, then it will look right." Eight Rules said, "No need to say more — this monkey is bound to want me to do the weeping." Pilgrim said, "Afraid you won't weep?"。」:「。」:「"If you don't weep, I won't be able to heal him." Eight Rules said, "Brother, you go on ahead, and I'll do the weeping." Pilgrim said, "There are several kinds of weeping: if you merely open your mouth and shout, that is called 'howling';""if you squeeze out a few tears, that is called 'sobbing';"。」:「。」"but only when you weep with real tears and weep with real feeling can it be called true wailing and grieving." Eight Rules said, "Let me weep a sample for you to see." He pulled out a strip of paper from who knows where, twisted it into a little paper spill, poked it up his nostrils a couple of times, sneezed a few times, and — just look at him — his eyes brimming with tears and mucus dripping, he began to wail. His mouth kept muttering on and on, rambling this way and that, truly just like someone whose kin had died. When he wept to the most pitiful part, even Elder Tang's tears fell and his heart ached.:「Pilgrim laughed and said, "That's exactly the kind of grieving needed — and you're not allowed to stop.""You fool, once you've fooled me into leaving, you'll just stop weeping."便。」:「"I'll still be listening — if you keep weeping like this, fine, but if you stop your voice even a little, I'll give you twenty blows on the ankle bones for sure." Eight Rules laughed, "Go on, go on."。」便"Once I get started weeping, I can weep for two whole days." Seeing him carrying on like this, Sha Seng went to find a few sticks of incense to burn as an offering.:「。」Pilgrim laughed, "Good, good, good — with the whole family showing some reverence, old Monkey can get down to work properly."

What a Great Sage! By now it was the middle of the night; taking leave of the master and his three disciples, he sprang onto his somersault cloud and shot straight in through the Southern Gate of Heaven.殿Sure enough, he did not pay respects at the Hall of Miraculous Mist, nor did he go up to the Dipper-and-Ox Palace, but sped along in a shaft of cloud-light straight to the Tushita Palace in the Heaven of Departed Grief, the thirty-third heaven. No sooner had he entered the gate than he saw Taishang Laojun sitting in the elixir chamber, with the immortal boys holding plantain-leaf fans, fanning the fire to refine elixirs.:「。」:「When he saw Pilgrim coming, he at once warned the boys watching the elixirs, "Be careful, all of you — the elixir thief has come again." Pilgrim, bowing with a laugh, said, "Old sir, why be so slapdash and guard against me like that?"。」:「"I don't do that sort of thing anymore." Laojun said, "You monkey — five hundred years ago you threw Heaven into chaos and stole and ate countless numbers of my sacred elixirs; you were captured and brought up to Heaven by the young sage Erlang, and put into my elixir furnace to be refined for forty-nine days — who knows how much charcoal was wasted on you."西"Now, fortunately, you have escaped and taken refuge in the fruits of Buddhahood, escorting Tang Monk to the Western Heaven to fetch the scriptures."?」:「?」"Not long ago, at Pingding Mountain, when you subdued the demons, you made trouble and refused to give back my treasures — what have you come for again today?" Pilgrim said, "As for that business the other day, old Monkey didn't delay a moment — I returned your five treasures right away. Instead you suspect and blame me?"

Laojun said, "If you're not on your journey, why have you slipped into my palace?" Pilgrim said, "Since we parted, we came west and encountered a place called the Kingdom of Wuji."殿"The king there was secretly murdered by a demon disguised as a Daoist priest, who could summon wind and rain; the demon then transformed itself into the king's likeness and now sits upon the golden throne.""One night, as my master sat reading scriptures in Baolin Temple, the king's ghost came to pay respects to him and earnestly requested that old Monkey subdue the demon and distinguish right from wrong for him.""Since old Monkey had no proof to go on, I went with my brother Bajie into the garden at night, broke into the flower garden, and found the burial spot — it was an eight-sided glazed well.""We fished up his corpse, and his features had not changed at all.""Back at the temple, when my master saw it, he was moved to mercy and told old Monkey to heal and save him, forbidding me to go down to the underworld to seek out his soul, and telling me instead to cure him right here in the world of the living.""I thought there was no way to restore him to life, and so I have come specially to pay my respects to you."。」:「"I earnestly beg the Patriarch of the Dao to take pity and lend old Monkey a thousand pills of the Nine-Turn Life-Restoring Elixir, so that I may save him." Laojun said, "This monkey is talking nonsense — a thousand pills, two thousand pills, do you think it's rice to be eaten by the bowlful?""Do you think it's made of clods of earth, that it comes so easily?"Bah!Be off with you!!」:「。」:「。」:「。」:「。」:「。」:「!」"There is none!" Pilgrim laughed, "A hundred or so pills would do, then." Laojun said, "There are none of those either." Pilgrim said, "Ten or so, then." Laojun said angrily, "This wretched monkey is such a pest — there are none, none, get out, get out!" Pilgrim laughed, "If there's truly none, I'll go ask elsewhere." Laojun shouted, "Go, go, go!" The Great Sage turned on his heel and started off.

:「。」:「。」:「Laojun suddenly thought to himself, "This monkey is so shameless — no sooner said than done — I'm afraid he'll sneak back in and steal some." He at once ordered an immortal boy to call him back, saying, "You monkey, your hands are never steady — let me just give you one pill of the Life-Restoring Elixir." Pilgrim said, "Old sir, since you already know old Monkey's methods, hurry up and bring out the golden elixir and split it with me four to six — it'll still be your good fortune;"──。」:「"otherwise, I'll give you the leather-ladle treatment — scoop out every last one." The Patriarch took up his gourd, turned it upside down, shook out a single golden elixir pill, and handed it to Pilgrim, saying, "This is all there is — take it, take it."。」:「。」"I give you this one pill to revive that emperor — just let it count as your act of merit." Pilgrim took it and said, "Wait a moment, let me taste it first — I'm afraid it might be fake, and I mustn't be fooled." With a flick, he tossed it into his mouth.:「。」:「Alarmed, the Patriarch rushed forward and grabbed him, seizing him by the scalp with one hand and clenching his fist with the other, cursing, "If this wretched monkey swallows it, I'll beat him dead on the spot!" Pilgrim laughed, "What a face — so petty and small-minded.""Who's going to eat your precious pill?""How much can it possibly be worth?""Mostly bluster and little substance."?」:「。」"Isn't it right here?" It turned out that the monkey had a little pouch under his chin, and he had tucked the golden elixir into that pouch. The Patriarch, pinching him, said, "Go on, go on, and don't come pestering me here again." Only then did the Great Sage thank the Patriarch and take his leave of the Tushita Palace in Heaven.

Just look at him: a thousand strands of auspicious mist leaving the Jade Tower, ten thousand rays of propitious cloud descending into the dust of the world. In an instant he had descended through the Southern Gate of Heaven and returned to the eastern quarter, where already the sun star could be seen rising.Bringing his cloud down, he went straight to the outside of Baolin Temple's mountain gate, where he could still hear Bajie weeping.:「。」:「?」:「。」:「He suddenly stepped forward and called out, "Master!" Sanzang said happily, "Wukong is back — do you have the elixir?" Pilgrim said, "I do." Bajie said, "How could he not?"。」:「"Even if he had to steal it, he'd have gone and stolen some from someone." Pilgrim laughed, "Brother, you can stop now — we don't need you anymore."。」:「。」便"Wipe your tears and go weep somewhere else." He told Sha Monk, "Fetch me some water to use." Sha Seng hurried to the well out back, where there was a bucket handy, and quickly brought half a bowl of water to Pilgrim.Pilgrim took the water, spat the elixir pill out of his mouth, and placed it between the emperor's lips. With both hands he pried open the teeth, and with a mouthful of clear water flushed the golden elixir down into the stomach. After about half an hour, they heard rumbling noises churning inside his belly, but his body still could not move.:「?」:「Pilgrim said, "Master, if even my golden elixir can't bring him back to life, aren't you just trying to torment old Monkey to death?" Sanzang said, "How could there be any reason he wouldn't revive?""A corpse that has been dead this long — how else could it manage to swallow water?""This is entirely the immortal power of the golden elixir.""From the moment the golden elixir entered his belly, his intestines began to rumble; the rumbling means the blood and vessels are stirring again, only his breath is cut off and cannot yet circulate.""Never mind that a man has been soaking in a well for three years — even raw iron would have rusted through by now."便。」 It's only that his primal vital energy is completely exhausted — if someone breathes a mouthful of qi into him, he'll be fine." Bajie stepped forward wanting to be the one to breathe the qi in, but Sanzang grabbed him and said, "That won't do — let Wukong do it instead." The master had good reason for this: it was because Zhu Bajie, from his youth, had taken life and committed sins by eating men, and so his breath was a turbid qi.Only Pilgrim, who had cultivated himself since youth, gnawing on pine needles and chewing cypress, living on peaches and fruit, possessed a breath of pure qi.The Great Sage stepped forward, pressed his thunder-god's beak of a mouth against the emperor's lips, and with a breath blew a mouthful of qi into his throat, passing it down through the Twelve-Storied Tower, turning at the Bright Hall, straight to the Cinnabar Field, and from the Bubbling Spring point back up to the Palace of Mud-Pill. :「。」:「。」:「:『。』。」With a loud whooshing sound, the king's qi gathered and his spirit returned; he turned over, swung his fists and bent his legs, and called out, "Master!" He knelt on both knees in the dust and said, "I remember last night my ghost came to pay homage to you — who would have thought that this very morning at dawn my living spirit would return!" Sanzang hastily pulled him up, saying, "Your Majesty, this was none of my doing — you should thank my disciple instead." Pilgrim laughed, "Master, what kind of talk is that? As the saying goes, 'A household has no two masters.' It does you no harm to accept his bow."

Sanzang, feeling quite embarrassed, helped the emperor up and went together with him into the meditation hall. The emperor then also paid his respects to Bajie, Pilgrim, and Sha Seng, and only then did they all take their seats.Just then the monks of the temple, having prepared the morning meal, were about to bring it in as an offering, when they suddenly saw the emperor in his water-soaked robes — every one of them was startled, and everyone began to whisper in confusion.:「Sun Pilgrim jumped forward and said, "You monks, there's no need for such alarm and suspicion.""This is in fact the King of Wuji, your true sovereign.""Three years ago he was murdered by a demon, and old Monkey has brought him back to life this very night.""Now we are going into his city to make clear what is right and what is wrong."。」"If the meal is ready, bring it out — let us eat and be on our way." The monks then brought hot water, washed his face for him, and gave him a change of clothes.穿They took off the emperor's ochre-yellow robe, and the temple's monastic officer dressed him in two plain cloth robes instead;they untied his Blue Field jade belt and fastened a yellow silk sash around him instead;they slipped off his Carefree shoes and put an old pair of monk's shoes on him instead.Only then did they all eat the morning meal, and saddle up the horse.

:「?」:「。」:「Pilgrim asked, "Bajie, how heavy is the luggage?" Bajie said, "Brother, I carry this load every single day, and truly I've no idea how heavy it is." Pilgrim said, "Divide that one load into two loads: you carry one, and let this emperor carry the other."。」:「"Let's hurry and get into the city to attend to our business." Bajie said happily, "What luck, what luck!""Carrying him here before cost me who knows how much effort;"。」"now that he's been healed, it turns out he's a stand-in for me after all." The fool then made a show of it, dividing the luggage and asking the temple for a carrying pole, taking the lighter load for himself and having the emperor carry the heavier one.:「?」:「西。」:「西Pilgrim laughed, "Your Majesty, dressed like that and carrying a load, following along with us — doesn't that wrong you?" The king hastily knelt down and said, "Master, you are like the parents who gave me a second life — never mind carrying a load, I would gladly hold the whip and stirrup, serve you, my lord, and travel with you all the way to the Western Heaven." Pilgrim said, "We don't need you to go to the Western Heaven — I have my reasons for this."。」:「。」:「。」"You need only carry it the forty li into the city; once we've caught the demon, you'll go back to being your emperor, and we'll go back to fetching our scriptures." Hearing this, Bajie said, "So that means he only carries it for forty li, and I, old Hog, am still stuck as the long-term laborer." Pilgrim said, "Brother, don't talk nonsense — hurry up and lead the way outside."

Sure enough, Bajie led the emperor on ahead, Sha Seng attended the master onto the horse, and Pilgrim followed behind.Just then the five hundred monks of the temple, all neatly arrayed, played delicate music and escorted them all the way out beyond the mountain gate.:「Pilgrim laughed, "Monks, there's no need to see us off any farther — I only fear that someone from the government might notice and leak word of my scheme, which would turn out badly.""Go back quickly, go back quickly."。」"Just take the emperor's robes, cap, and belt, clean them up properly, and send them into the city either tonight or tomorrow morning — I'll get you some titles and rewards in thanks." The monks obeyed and each returned to the temple.Pilgrim strode out with great steps, caught up with his master, and pressed straight onward.Truly it was:

Master and disciples traveled the road, and before half a day had passed, they already saw the city walls drawing near.:「。」:「。」Sanzang said, "Wukong, that ahead must be the Kingdom of Wuji." Pilgrim said, "Just so — let's hurry into the city to attend to business." When master and disciples entered the city, they saw the streets and markets neat and orderly, the scenery lively and bustling. They soon also saw phoenix towers and dragon halls, magnificent in the extreme. There is a poem to prove it.The poem says:

:「。」:「Sanzang dismounted and said, "Disciples, let us go straight into the court from here to have our travel rescript renewed, so as to save the trouble of going through some government office again." Pilgrim said, "Well said."。」:「。」:「。」:「。」:「"Let us brothers all go in together — with more of us there, it will be easier to talk." Tang Monk said, "Let's all go in, but don't act coarse — first perform the rites due between ruler and subject, and only then speak further." Pilgrim said, "To perform the rites between ruler and subject means we'd have to bow down." Sanzang said, "Just so — we must perform the grand rite of five bows and three kowtows." Pilgrim laughed, "Master, that won't do at all.""If we were to perform such rites before him, it would truly be unwise.""Just let me go in ahead first — I'll have a way to handle it.""If he has anything to say, let me be the one to answer.""If I bow, you all bow too;"。」使:「西"if I crouch, you all crouch too." Just look at that trouble-making Monkey King — he led them to the court gate and said to the Usher of the Gate, "We are envoys sent from the court of Great Tang in the Land of the East, on our way to the Western Heaven to worship the Buddha and seek the scriptures."。」 Having arrived here today, we wish to have our travel rescript renewed — may I trouble Your Excellency to convey this for us, so that our good work may not be delayed." The Gate Officer at once went in through the Duan Gate, knelt at the foot of the cinnabar steps, and reported, "Outside the court gate there are five monks, who say they are imperial envoys from the Land of Tang in the East, going to the Western Heaven to worship the Buddha and seek scriptures, and who have now arrived to have their travel rescript renewed; not daring to enter without leave, they are now waiting outside the gate to be summoned." The Demon King at once ordered them summoned in.

Tang Monk then went in through the court gate together with the others, the revived sovereign following along.:「As they walked, he could not hold back the tears rolling down his cheeks, and he thought secretly to himself, "How pitiful!"。」:「"My realm, solid as a bronze bushel, my state, walled round in iron — who would have thought it would be secretly seized by him!" Pilgrim said, "Your Majesty, do not grieve — I fear it will let the news leak out.""This cudgel of mine is throbbing in my ear — this time it is bound to see results; I guarantee I will beat the demon to death and sweep away the evil thing."。」殿"This realm will soon be returned to you." The king dared not disobey, and could only pull at his sleeve to wipe his tears, and follow along resigned to whatever might come, going straight down before the Golden Bell Hall. They also saw the two ranks of civil and military officials, four hundred court officers in all, each one dignified and solemn, of imposing bearing.

Pilgrim led Tang Monk to stand before the white jade steps, holding himself erect and unmoving.:「便None of the officials below the steps but were struck with alarm, saying, "This monk is utterly stupid and boorish — how can he see our king and not bow down?""Nor even open his mouth to offer greetings?""Not even a single bow of salutation?"。」 How bold and rude!" Before they had finished speaking, they heard the Demon King open his mouth and ask, "Where do you monks come from?" Pilgrim answered proudly, "I am an imperial envoy from the great Tang country in the Land of the East, Jambudvipa Continent of the South, sent to the Great Thunderclap Monastery in the country of India in the Western Region, to worship the living Buddha and seek the true scriptures."。」 Now that we have arrived in this land, we dare not pass through empty-handed, and have come specially to have our travel pass renewed." Hearing this, the Demon King grew angry at heart and said, "What of it, that you're from the Land of the East?"?」:「"I do not pay tribute to your court, nor do I have relations with your country — how dare you show such disrespect before me and not perform obeisance?" Pilgrim laughed, "My Land of the East was established as the Celestial Court of old, long known as the Superior Kingdom, while you and your kind are but a lesser realm on the frontier.":『"It has been said since ancient times: 'The emperor of the superior kingdom is as a father and as a ruler;'"。』?」:「!」」,"the emperor of the lesser kingdom is as a subject and as a son.' You have not even come out to receive me, and yet you dare to dispute my not bowing?" At this the Demon King flew into a great rage and ordered the civil and military officials, "Seize this wild monk!" No sooner had the word "seize" been spoken than all the officials sprang into action together.:「!」使Pilgrim gave a shout, pointed with his hand, and cried, "Don't come near!" With that single point, he cast a body-binding spell, and none of the officials could move at all.殿Truly the captains before the steps stood like wooden puppets, and the generals in the hall stood like clay men.

When the Demon King saw that Pilgrim had frozen all the many civil and military officials in place, he sprang up hastily, leapt down from the dragon throne, and made to seize him himself.:「The Monkey King rejoiced inwardly, thinking, "Good — this is exactly what old Monkey wants." With this, even if his head were cast of raw iron, one touch of my cudgel would still knock a hole clean through it." Just as he was about to move, unexpectedly, from off to the side, out stepped a life-saving star to intervene.:「。」 Do you know who this was? He was in fact the crown prince of the Kingdom of Wuji. He hurried forward, seized the demon king's court robe, and knelt before him, saying: "Father, calm your wrath." The spirit asked: "What is it, my child?" The prince said: "Let it be known to father the king: three years ago I heard people say that there was an imperial envoy-monk under the Tang court of the Eastern Land, sent to the Western Heaven to worship Buddha and seek scriptures. Little did I expect he would arrive in our kingdom only today.Father, your majesty's nature is stern and fierce; if you were to seize this monk and behead him, I fear that should Great Tang one day get word of it, wrath would surely arise.Consider that Li Shimin, having proclaimed himself king and unified the realm, is still not content, and even crosses the seas to wage war;if he learns that father the king has slain his imperial brother, the sacred monk, he will certainly raise troops and dispatch horses to contend with father the king. What then, when our soldiers are few and generals weak? By then it would be too late for regret.。」If father the king heeds what his child proposes, let these four monks be questioned, that their origins be made clear; first establish that they have failed to pay homage to the royal carriage, and only then may they be charged with a crime."

This whole speech was in fact the prince acting with caution, fearing that harm might come to Tang Seng; he deliberately detained the demon, all unaware that Xingzhe was already preparing to strike.:「The demon king indeed believed these words. Standing before the dragon couch, he gave a great shout: "When did that monk leave the Eastern Land??」:「For what reason did the Tang king send you to seek scriptures?" Xingzhe answered proudly and loftily: "My master is the imperial brother of the Tang king, titled Sanzang.Because there was a chancellor under the Tang king's court, surnamed Wei and named Zheng, who under a heavenly decree beheaded the old dragon of the Jing River in a dream. The Great Tang king dreamed he wandered through the underworld courts, and after being restored to life, held a great Land and Water Mass to universally deliver wronged souls and sinful ghosts.西Because my master expounded the scriptures and widely dispensed mercy, he suddenly received the instruction of Bodhisattva Guanyin of the Southern Sea to journey west.My master made a great and far-reaching vow, glad and willing in heart, to repay the state and exhaust his loyalty, and was granted travel papers by the Tang king. That was in the ninth month of the thirteenth year of the Zhenguan reign of the Great Tang, three days before the full moon, when he left the Eastern Land.On reaching Liangjie Mountain first, he took me as his eldest disciple, surnamed Sun, named Wukong the Pilgrim;then at Gao Family Village in the land of Wusi, he took his second disciple, surnamed Zhu, named Wuneng, Eight Rules;at the Flowing Sand River he took his third disciple, surnamed Sha, named Wujing the monk;。」:「and the other day at the imperially built Baolin Temple, he newly took on a carrying lad, a Daoist attendant." When the demon king heard this, having no way to search Tang Seng, he used cunning words to press Xingzhe further, glaring angrily as he asked: "Monk, when you first left the Eastern Land you were alone, and since then you have gathered four followers. Those three monks may be allowed, but this Daoist is hard to account for. That attendant lad must certainly have been abducted. What is his name?Does he have ordination papers or not?。」:「Bring him up for questioning." This so frightened the emperor that he trembled and shook, saying: "Master, oh!?」:「。」How am I to answer?" Sun the Pilgrim pinched him and said: "Don't be afraid; let me answer in your place."

:「The splendid Great Sage stepped forward briskly and called out sternly to the monster: "Your Majesty, this old Daoist is a mute, and moreover somewhat deaf.西It was only because in his youth he once traveled to the Western Heaven that he knows the roads.。」:「。」I know every detail of his origins and history through and through; I beg Your Majesty's indulgence — let me answer on his behalf." The demon king said: "Answer truthfully and at once on his behalf, and spare yourself blame." Xingzhe said:

When the demon king, up in the golden hall, heard this speech, it so frightened him that his heart pounded like a startled deer, and a flush of red rose over his face.He made to withdraw at once and flee, but alas, he had no weapon in hand.殿使Turning his head, he saw a general guarding the hall, a precious sword at his waist, whom Xingzhe had already fixed in place with a body-binding spell; he stood there as if dazed and dumb. The demon king went up to him, seized this precious sword, and mounted a cloud to soar off into the void.:「This so enraged Sha Monk that he stamped and fumed like thunder, while Zhu Eight Rules shouted loudly, blaming Xingzhe for being a rash, impatient monkey: "If you had only spoken more slowly, wouldn't that have kept him pinned there??」:「Now that he has fled on a cloud, where shall we chase and find him?" Xingzhe laughed and said: "Brothers, don't clamor in confusion.,」,「Let us have the prince come down to pay respects to his father, and the consort come out to pay respects to her husband" — and he recited an incantation, releasing the body-binding spell — "and let the many officials revive and come to pay homage to their sovereign, so they may know this is the true emperor.。」:「。」Have them tell the whole story from beginning to end, and then things will be made clear; I shall go after him again." The splendid Great Sage instructed Eight Rules and Sha Monk: "Take good care to protect the sovereign and his officials, father and son, the consort, and my master." No sooner had he spoken than his form vanished from sight.

He had in fact leapt up into the ninefold clouds, and opening his eyes, gazed all around, watching for the demon king.He saw that the creature, having indeed escaped with his life, was heading straight toward the northeast.:「Xingzhe caught up close and shouted: "Monster, where are you going?。」:「Old Sun has come!" The demon king turned his head in alarm, drew out his precious sword, and cried loudly: "Sun Wukong, how tiresome you are.?」:「I have come to usurp another's throne — it has nothing to do with you. Why must you come and champion an unjust cause, exposing my secret plans?" Xingzhe laughed heartily: "You bold and reckless fiend!Did the emperor's throne also permit you to take it?Since you already knew I was Old Sun, you ought to have fled far away — why then did you still torment my master and demand some sort of confession? Was that confession just now true or not?。」Don't you run — a real hero takes this blow from Old Sun's staff!" The demon sidestepped to dodge it, then drew his precious sword and struck back full in the face. The two of them joined in combat, and this was a fine battle indeed, truly:

After the two had fought several rounds, the demon, unable to withstand the Monkey King, hastily turned back and leapt once more along the old road into the city, dashing before the white jade steps among the ranks of civil and military officials. There he shook himself and transformed, taking on the very likeness of Tang Sanzang, and stood arm in arm with him before the steps. The Great Sage caught up and was about to raise his staff to strike.:「。」:「。」:「The demon said: "Disciple, don't strike — it is I." He raised his staff hastily to strike the other Tang Seng, but that one too said: "Disciple, don't strike — it is I." With two identical Tang Sengs, it was truly hard to tell them apart: "If I strike dead with one blow the demon that has transformed into Tang Seng, that too would complete a meritorious deed;?」:「but if I strike dead with one blow my own true master, then what is to be done?" He had no choice but to stay his hand, and called out to Eight Rules and Sha Monk, asking: "Which one is truly the demon, and which is my master?。」:「。」Point him out to me, so that I may strike him properly." Eight Rules said: "You two were fighting and shouting up in midair; in a mere blink of my eye I suddenly saw two masters, and I have no idea which is real and which is false."

:「Hearing this, Xingzhe formed a mudra and recited an incantation, summoning the Dharma-protecting devas of the heavens, the Six Jia and Six Ding generals, the Wufang Jietuo, the Sizhi Gongcao, the eighteen guardian arhats of the escort, the local land god of this place, and the mountain spirit of this region, saying: "Old Sun has come here to subdue a demon; the demon has transformed himself into my master, identical in form and bearing, and it is truly hard to distinguish him. 殿You who know the truth in secret, please invite my master up onto the hall, and let me seize the demon." It happened that this demon was skilled at riding clouds and mist; hearing Xingzhe's words, he hastily broke free and leapt up onto the golden throne hall.Xingzhe then raised his staff and struck straight at Tang Seng. How pitiful!Had those several deities not been summoned, this one blow would have pounded even twenty Tang Sengs into a bloody pulp!:「殿。」殿Fortunately the assembled deities held back the iron staff, saying: "Great Sage, that demon can ride the clouds — he has already gone up onto the hall first." Xingzhe rushed up onto the hall after him, but the demon leapt back down again and seized hold of Tang Seng, mingling once more into the crowd of people, so that again he could not be told apart.

:「Xingzhe's heart grew displeased, and seeing Eight Rules standing to the side sneering coldly, Xingzhe flew into a rage and said: "You great lump, what is this?!」:「Now there are two masters — you'll have two to call, two to answer you, two to wait upon — you seem awfully pleased about it!" Eight Rules laughed: "Brother, you call me a fool, but you're an even bigger fool than I.Since even you cannot tell them apart, why waste such effort?Just bear your headache a while longer, and have my master recite that certain formula; Sha Monk and I will each hold one and listen.?」:「Whichever one cannot recite it must surely be the demon — what difficulty is there in that?" Xingzhe said: "Brother, I owe you one for this.Indeed, that formula is known to only three people.便It originated from the very heart-sprout of our Buddha Tathagata, was transmitted to Bodhisattva Guanyin, and the Bodhisattva in turn transmitted it to my master; no one else knows it at all.。」Very well, Master, recite it." And sure enough, Tang Seng began to recite. How could the demon king possibly know it? He only mumbled and hummed confusedly from his mouth.:「。」Eight Rules said: "This one humming along is the demon, then." He let go of him, raised his rake, and struck at him.便The demon king leapt up at once and, treading a cloud, fled.

The splendid Eight Rules gave a shout and likewise mounted a cloud in pursuit. This so flustered Sha Monk that he let go of Tang Seng and also drew out his precious staff to strike.Tang Seng then stopped reciting the incantation. The Great Sage Sun, enduring his headache, gripped his iron staff and gave chase up into the air.Ah!In this bout, three fierce monks surrounded a single wicked demon.使The demon king was set upon from both sides by Eight Rules and Sha Monk with their rake and staff, and held fast.:「Xingzhe laughed and said: "If I go in again to strike him head-on, he'll be somewhat wary of me, and I fear he may flee once more.。」Let me, Old Sun, leap up higher and give him a pestle-pounding blow from above, and finish him off."

:「。」The Great Sage rode his auspicious light up into the ninefold heavens, and just as he was about to strike down with a decisive blow, he saw, in the northeast, within a cluster of coloured clouds, someone call out sternly: "Sun Wukong, hold your hand a moment." Xingzhe turned to look, and it was none other than Bodhisattva Manjushri.:「?」:「。」:「。」He hastily withdrew his staff, stepped forward, and made a bow, saying: "Bodhisattva, where are you bound?" Manjushri said: "I have come to take this demon in your stead." Xingzhe thanked him: "You have gone to much trouble." The Bodhisattva then drew a demon-revealing mirror from his sleeve and shone it upon the creature's true form.Xingzhe then called Eight Rules and Sha Monk over together to pay their respects to the Bodhisattva.Looking now into the mirror, one saw that the demon king's true form was fierce and terrible indeed:

:「?」:「。」:「Xingzhe said: "Bodhisattva, this is the blue-maned lion you sit upon — how did it come to run off and become a spirit, and yet you did not subdue it?" The Bodhisattva said: "Wukong, he did not run off; he was sent here by Buddha's own decree." Xingzhe said: "For this creature to become a spirit and usurp an emperor's throne, and still be called an act sent by Buddha's decree —。」:「then someone like Old Sun, who protects Tang Seng through such suffering, ought surely to receive several imperial edicts of merit." The Bodhisattva said: "You do not know the whole of it.西Long ago this king of the Kingdom of Wuji was fond of good deeds and of feeding monks; Buddha sent me to deliver him to the West, so that he might early attain the golden body of an arhat.Because I could not appear to him in my true form, I transformed into an ordinary wandering monk and asked him for some alms of food. He, provoked by a few words of mine, and not recognizing that I was a good being, bound me with a rope and cast me into the imperial water river, where I was soaked for three days and three nights.西Fortunately the Golden Body of the Six Jia rescued me and brought me back to the West, where I reported the matter to Tathagata.。『。』。」:「。」:「Tathagata then ordered this demon to come to this place, push the king down into the well, and soak him there for three years, to repay the resentment of my own three days' watery ordeal. 'Every drink and every peck is foreordained.' Now that you and your companions have come here, the deed has been accomplished." Xingzhe said: "Though you have repaid whatever private grudge lay behind this 'every drink and every peck' business, that monster, for all we know, has harmed no small number of people." The Bodhisattva said: "He has never harmed anyone. Ever since he arrived, in these three years, the wind and rain have been timely, the state prosperous and the people at peace — how then could he have harmed anyone?" Xingzhe said: "That may well be so, but the three consort-queens have shared his bed and risen with him morning after morning, defiling their bodies and ruining no small measure of moral order and human relations — and you still call that not harming anyone?" The Bodhisattva said: "He could not have defiled them; he is a gelded lion." When Eight Rules heard this, he stepped up close and reached out to feel for himself.:「──。」:「He laughed and said: "So this monster is truly like the red-nosed drunkard who never actually drinks — he's been carrying an undeserved reputation all along!" Xingzhe said: "Since that is so, take him away then.。」Had the Bodhisattva not come in person, his life would certainly not have been spared."

:「!」The Bodhisattva then recited an incantation and shouted: "Beast, will you not return yet to your true allegiance — what are you waiting for!" Only then did the demon king reveal his true form. The Bodhisattva released a lotus-flower canopy to hold the demon fast, seated herself upon its back, and, treading the auspicious light, took her leave of Xingzhe.Hey!

As for how Tang Seng and his disciples finally left the city, that is not yet known — listen to the explanation in the next chapter.

What it’s about

To revive the drowned king, Wukong flies to Laozi in the Tushita Palace and, half by charm and half by theft, obtains a single grain of the Nine-Cycle Restorative Elixir. Back at the palace he forces breath and pill into the corpse, and the king who lay three years in a well sits up alive, restored to his own body and his own right mind.

The pilgrims bring the true king before his court, and when the false king is challenged he cannot keep his shape and flees, revealed as a demon at last. As Wukong moves to kill him, Manjusri descends and claims him: the impostor is the Bodhisattva's own blue-haired lion, sent to repay the king for an old slight. The mount is reclaimed, the rightful king enthroned, and the pilgrims journey on.

When it was written 背景

This 回 resolves the Wuji arc with the two moves that recur throughout the novel, a stolen elixir of resurrection from Laozi, and the last-moment revelation that the monster belonged to a Bodhisattva, here Manjusri's lion, working out a karmic debt. Learners should note the completed shape of the mystery, murder, proof, revival, unmasking, restoration, and see how even a straightforward crime story is folded back into the book's frame of celestial mounts loosed to try mortals and pilgrims alike.
