Monkey Defeats the Gold and Silver Horned Kings

035Chapter 35

This poem secretly matches the Taoist marvels of the Great Sage Sun.:「Having obtained that demon's true treasure, he tucked it in his sleeve and said gladly, "The wretched fiend labored so hard to catch me — truly it was like scooping the moon from water;。」:「!」:「?」:「。」but if old Monkey wants to catch you, it'll be as easy as playing with ice over a fire." Hiding the gourd, he slipped quietly out the door, resumed his true form, and shouted fiercely, "Open the door, you goblins!" A little demon nearby said, "Who are you now, daring to come shouting here?" Wukong said, "Go quickly and report to that old wretched fiend of yours that Xingzhe Sun has come."

:「。」:「That little demon hurried inside to report, "Great King, outside the gate there's someone called Xingzhe Sun." The Old Demon was greatly alarmed and said, "Worthy brother, this is bad — we've stirred up a whole nest of them. The Golden Rope has Sun Xingzhe bound right now, the gourd currently holds Zhe Xingsun, so how can there also be a Xingzhe Sun?。」:「I suppose several of his brothers have all come." The Second Demon said, "Elder brother, set your mind at ease. This gourd of mine can hold a thousand people — I've only just packed away Zhe Xingsun, one person; why should I fear this so-called Xingzhe Sun?。」:「。」Let me go out and take a look, and pack him away too." The Old Demon said, "Brother, be careful."

:「?」:「Watch now — that Second Demon, holding a fake gourd, still swaggering as boldly and imposingly as before, walked out the door and called loudly, "What sort of person are you, from where, that you dare shout here?" Wukong said, "You don't recognize me:

:「?」:「That demon said, "Come closer — I won't fight you, but if I call your name once, dare you answer?" Wukong laughed and said, "If you call me, I'll answer at once;?」:「but if I call you, will you answer?" That demon said, "When I call you, it's because I have a treasure, a gourd, that can hold people;?」:「。」:「。」:「。」when you call me, what do you have?" Wukong said, "I also have a gourd." That demon said, "Since you have one, take it out and let me see." Wukong then drew the gourd from his sleeve and said, "Wretched fiend, look." He gave it a shake, then hid it back in his sleeve at once, fearing the demon might snatch it.

:「When that demon saw it, he was greatly astonished and said, "Where did his gourd come from? How can it be exactly the same as mine??」便:「?」:「?」:「Even if it grew on the same vine, there ought to be some difference in size or shape — how can it be utterly identical, without the slightest difference?" He then put on a serious face and called out, "Xingzhe Sun, where did your gourd come from?" The Great Sage truly had no idea of its origin, so he took the question and turned it right back, asking, "Where did your gourd come from?" That demon, not seeing through the trick, took it for an honest question, and so told its whole origin from the beginning: "This gourd of mine dates from when chaos first divided and heaven and earth first opened. There was a Grand Supreme Elder Ancestor, who in the guise of Nüwa, smelted stones to mend the sky and gave universal salvation to the world of Jambudvipa.便。」:「。」 When he came to mend the gap in the Qian palace of heaven, he saw at the foot of Mount Kunlun a strand of immortal vine, on which grew this purple-gold red gourd — and it is exactly what Laojun left behind, down to this very day." On hearing this, the Great Sage seized on his words and picked up the same tone, saying, "My gourd, too, came from there." The demon chief said, "How can that be proven?" The Great Sage said, "From when the pure and the turbid first separated, heaven was incomplete in the northwest and earth was incomplete in the southeast; the Grand Supreme Ancestor of the Tao, in the guise of Nüwa, mended the gap in the sky, and passing by the foot of Mount Kunlun, found an immortal vine bearing two gourds.。」:「。」:「。」I obtained the male one; that one of yours is the female." The demon said, "Never mind male or female — as long as it can hold people, it's a fine treasure." The Great Sage said, "You speak well enough — I'll let you try packing me away first."

:「。」That demon was overjoyed, and at once leapt up into the air, holding the gourd, and called out once, "Xingzhe Sun." The Great Sage heard it, and without pausing for breath, answered eight or nine times in a row, yet still could not be packed away.:「The demon fell back down, stamping his feet and beating his chest, saying, "Heaven!。」:「。」:「。」They do say the ways of the world never change — even a treasure like this fears its own husband; the female, seeing the male, dared not pack him away." Wukong laughed and said, "Put that away for now — it's my turn, old Monkey's, to call your name." He quickly somersaulted up into the air, turned the gourd's bottom toward heaven and its mouth toward the earth, aimed it straight at the demon, and called out, "Silver Horn King." That demon dared not keep his mouth shut, and could only answer once.In an instant he was packed away inside, and Wukong sealed it with the talisman reading "By Order of the Supreme Lord Laozi, Swiftly as the Law Commands.":「。」In his heart he rejoiced secretly, saying, "My child, today you too get a taste of something new."

He then brought his cloud down, and holding the gourd, his mind fixed single-mindedly on rescuing his master, headed once more toward the mouth of the Lotus Cave. All over that mountain were rough, uneven paths, and besides, he was bow-legged, hobbling along, so that the gourd shook and rattled with a sloshing, rustling sound that never stopped.便Now why do you suppose it made such a sound? It turns out the Great Sage Sun's body had been tempered and refined, so it could not be melted down in a hurry;that demon, though he too could ride clouds and mount mist, possessed only sorcery — in the main he had not yet shed his mortal frame, and so once inside the treasure, he began to melt.:「尿Wukong still did not think he had already melted, and laughed, saying, "My son, ah, I wonder if that's you making water, or rinsing your mouth? This is a trade old Monkey has done before. Not waiting seven or eight days for you to turn into thin liquid, I won't even lift the lid to look. What's the hurry? What does it matter?。」Considering how easily I myself once got out, you ought by rights not be looked at for a thousand years." Carrying the gourd and talking to himself, before he knew it he had reached the cave entrance, and he shook the gourd again — it rattled all the louder.:「He said, "This sounds like the rattling tube used for casting fortunes — it would make a fine one for divination.。」:「。」Let old Monkey cast a fortune, and see when my master will get out of here." Watch him now, shaking it ceaselessly in his hand, chanting ceaselessly with his mouth: "Zhou Yi, King Wen, Confucius the Sage, Lady Taohua, Master Guiguzi."

:「。」:「The little demons inside the cave saw this and said, "Great King, disaster! Xingzhe Sun has packed our Second Great King, Grandfather, into the gourd and is casting fortunes with it." When the Old Demon heard this, his soul flew and his spirit scattered in fright; his bones went soft and his sinews numb, and he fell flat on the ground with a thud, weeping aloud, "Worthy brother! You and I left the upper realm privately together and took refuge in the mortal dust, hoping to share glory and splendor together, forever lords of this mountain cave.。」滿Who would have thought that because of this monk, your life would be lost, severing the bond between us as brothers, as close as hand and foot." The whole cave of demons wept bitterly together.

:「Zhu Bajie, hanging from the beam, heard the whole family weeping together and could not help calling out, "Monster, don't cry just yet — let old Zhu explain it to you.The Sun Xingzhe who came first, the Zhe Xingsun who came next, and the Xingzhe Sun who came after — the three characters rearranged every which way — are all one and the same, my elder martial brother. He has seventy-two transformations, and by some sleight of movement got in here, stole the treasure, and packed away your younger brother.Your younger brother is already dead — there's no need to carry on mourning like this.》。」:「Quickly scrub the pots and stove clean, and prepare some mushrooms, fungus, tea buds, bamboo shoots, bean curd, gluten, wood ears, and vegetables; invite my master and fellow disciples down, and we'll chant the Sutra of Rebirth for your younger brother." When the Old Demon heard this, he grew furious at heart, saying, "They said Zhu Bajie was an honest fool — turns out he's not honest at all!。」:「。」:「。」He's actually making a joke to mock me." He called out, "Little demons, hold off the mourning for now, untie Zhu Bajie, steam him till he's thoroughly done, and once I've eaten my fill, I'll go after Sun Xingzhe again for revenge." Sha Seng grumbled at Bajie, "Well then, didn't I tell you not to talk so much — talk too much and you're the first to be steamed and eaten." That fool, too, felt more than a little afraid.:「。」:「A little demon nearby said, "Great King, Zhu Bajie doesn't steam well." Bajie said, "Amitabha!Which brother has been building up secret merit for me?。」:「。」:「。」Indeed, I don't steam well." Then another demon said, "Strip off his skin, and he'll steam just fine." Bajie panicked and said, "He'll steam well, he'll steam well — though the skin and bones are coarse, once the broth boils he'll go soft, sizzle sizzle."

:「。」:「。」:「。」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「Right in the midst of this clamor, a little demon at the front gate came to report, "Xingzhe Sun is cursing at the gate again." The Old Demon was startled anew and said, "This wretch thinks too little of us, as if we had no one." He called out, "Little ones, hang Zhu Bajie back up as before, and check how many treasures we still have." The demon in charge of the household said, "There are still three treasures in the cave." The Old Demon asked, "Which three?" The steward said, "There's still the Seven-Star Sword, the Plantain-Leaf Fan, and the Pure Vase." The Old Demon said, "That vase is no use: it was originally meant to call a person's name, and once they answered, they'd be packed inside — but instead the spell was taught to that Sun Xingzhe, who turned it around and packed away our own brother.Never mind it, leave it at home.。」Quickly bring the sword and the fan." The steward demon at once presented the two treasures to the Old Demon. The Old Demon tucked the plantain fan into the back of his collar, took the Seven-Star Sword in hand, and mustered the demon host, large and small, more than three hundred strong, having each and every one take up spear or club, coil rope or wield blade. This Old Demon then donned helmet and armor, and put on a fiery red silk robe. The demon host formed ranks and marched out, meaning to capture the Great Sage.

The Great Sage Sun already knew that the Second Demon had melted inside the gourd, and so he tied it up tightly and secured it, tucked it into his waistband, and took the golden-hooped rod in hand, ready for battle.Just then he saw the Old Demon, red banners waving, leap out through the gate. And how was he dressed?

:「The Old Demon hastily ordered the little demons to form battle lines, and cursed, "You wretched ape, utterly without manners.!」:「You've harmed my brother, injured my very hand and foot — how truly hateful!" Wukong cursed back, "You death-courting monster, you can't even bear to give up the life of one single demon. But my master, my fellow disciples, and the horse too — four living beings in all — hang there in your cave for no reason at all; how could my heart bear it?How could reason and feeling accept it?。」Quickly bring them out and return them to me, add plenty of extra travel money, and send old Monkey off happily on his way — and I'll spare this old demon's worthless life besides." That demon would brook no argument, and raised his precious sword to hack straight at his head;使the Great Sage raised his iron rod in hand to meet him. This was quite a fight outside the cave gate.Ah!

This Old Demon and the Great Sage fought through twenty rounds without either gaining the upper hand.:「。」He pointed with the tip of his sword and called out, "All demons, come at once!" Those three hundred-odd goblins surged forward together and surrounded Wukong right in the middle.使That fine Great Sage, utterly fearless, wielded his rod, striking left and right, blocking front and rear.綿退Those little demons all had some skill, and the more they fought, the more they pressed in, clinging like cotton wound around his body, grabbing at his waist and pulling at his legs, unwilling in the least to fall back.使:「!」The Great Sage grew alarmed, and at once used the body-outside-body technique, plucking a handful of hairs from beneath his left rib, chewing them to bits and spitting them out, shouting, "Change!" — and one by one they all turned into Wukongs.使:「Watch them now — the taller ones wielding clubs, the shorter ones swinging fists, and the smallest, with nowhere else to strike, clinging to ankles and gnawing at tendons, until they beat all those little demons so that they scattered like falling stars and drifting clouds, crying out together, "Great King, ah, this is no good, it's hopeless! 退西The whole ground and mountain are covered in Sun Xingzhes." This body-outside-body technique drove the demon host back in retreat, leaving only the Old Demon trapped in the middle, chased east and west, with no way out.

That demon, in a panic, held the precious sword in his left hand, and reaching behind his neck with his right, drew out the plantain fan; facing southeast toward the Bing-Ding fire, directly opposite the Li trigram, he gave it a whoosh of a fan downward — and at once the ground burst into blazing flame. It turned out that such was the nature of this treasure, that fanned for no other reason, fire poured out of it.That monster was utterly merciless, and fanned it seven or eight times running, till the flames scorched the sky and blazed across the earth, fierce fire leaping and soaring. What a fire:

:「?」Seeing this fierce fire, the Great Sage too felt his heart shake and his gall tremble, and said to himself, "This is bad — my own body I can manage, but my hairs cannot stand up to this; once caught in this fire, would it not truly be as easy as singeing hair?" He shook himself once, and gathered all the hairs back onto his body.He left only a single hair transformed into a false body, to dodge the fire and escape the disaster. His true body, forming the fire-avoiding mudra, somersaulted up and leapt away, escaping from the midst of the great fire, and headed straight for the Lotus Cave, thinking only of rescuing his master.Hurrying to the gate, he brought his cloud down, and saw outside the cave entrance a hundred or so little demons, all with broken heads and snapped legs, flesh torn and skin split open.It turned out these were all the ones injured by his body-dividing technique, all standing there groaning and moaning, enduring the pain. When the Great Sage saw them, he could not hold back his fierce, savage temper, and swinging up his iron rod, beat his way straight in.Pitiful — the merit of a body painstakingly refined and tempered was undone, and it became once more just a heap of old fur and hide.

The Great Sage, having wiped out the little demons, rushed into the cave, meaning to free his master.:「。」Then he saw fire blazing within, and in his fright his hands fumbled and his feet stumbled, saying, "That's it, that's it — this fire is burning up from the back door; old Monkey will find it hard to save my master now." Just as he stood there in dread, he looked closely — ah!It turned out not to be firelight at all, but a beam of golden light.:「He steadied himself, and looking closely inward, saw it was the sheep-fat jade Pure Vase giving off the light, and his heart rejoiced, saying, "What a fine treasure! That vase — once a little demon carried it up the mountain giving off light, and old Monkey got hold of it, but never expected that fiend to search it back away again.。」Today it's hidden here, and it turns out it still gives off light." Watch him now, stealing away the vase, glad and delighted, and without stopping to save his master, he hurriedly turned and headed out of the cave.Just as he stepped out the door, he saw that demon, holding sword and fan, coming from the south. The Great Sage could not dodge in time, and the Old Demon raised his sword and hacked straight at his head;the Great Sage quickly somersaulted up on his cloud and fled without trace or shadow — but no more of that for now.

Now to speak of that demon, who reached the gate and saw corpses strewn all over the ground, all of them his own goblin followers.:「In his fright he looked up to heaven with a long sigh, and could not help but weep aloud, "Bitter!!」Painful!" There is a poem as proof. The poem says:

That Old Demon, ashamed and distressed beyond measure, wailed with every step as he wept his way back into the cave.He saw all the household goods and utensils still there, but it was left silent and desolate, with not a single person's shape to be seen, and the more sorrowful and bleak it felt, the more miserable he grew.Alone, he sat in the cave, slumping over the stone table, leaning the precious sword against the edge of the table, tucking the fan behind his shoulder, and drowsily, dazedly, fell asleep — this is just as the saying goes: when a man meets a joyful event his spirits are fresh; when gloom weighs on his heart, drowsiness comes easily.

Now to speak of the Great Sage Sun, who turned his cloud around and stood before the mountain, thinking of how to save his master; he fastened the Pure Vase securely at his waist, and headed straight to the cave mouth to scout things out.He saw the two leaves of the gate standing open, silent and still, with no sound to be heard. He at once moved forward lightly, step by step, and slipped in quietly. There he saw the demon leaning aslant against the stone table, snoring loudly asleep. The plantain fan had slipped out from his shoulder clothing, half covering the back of his head;the Seven-Star Sword still leaned aslant by the table.Wukong crept quietly forward and pulled out the fan, then quickly turned and, with a whoosh, ran back out.It so happened that the fan's handle scraped against the demon's hair, and this at once woke him.He raised his head to look, and saw it was Sun Xingzhe who had stolen it, and in a panic seized his sword and gave chase. The Great Sage had already leapt out the gate, tucked the fan into his waistband, and with both hands swung wide his iron rod to meet that demon in battle. This was quite a fight:

That Old Demon and the Great Sage fought through thirty or forty rounds; as evening drew near, unable to hold out any longer, he was beaten back and fled the field;西heading straight southwest, he made for Yalong Cave to seek refuge — but no more of that for now.

The Great Sage then brought his cloud down, rushed into the Lotus Cave, and untied Tang Seng, Bajie, and Sha Monk.:「?」:「The three of them, freed from their peril, thanked Wukong, then asked, "Where has the demon gone?" Wukong said, "The Second Demon is already packed inside the gourd, and by now must surely have melted.西The Great Demon, just now beaten in battle, has fled to Yalong Mountain in the southwest. As for the demons of the whole cave, old Monkey's body-dividing technique killed off half of them;and the remaining routed survivors who came back, old Monkey wiped out entirely as well.。」:「。」:「Only then was I able to get in here and set you all free." Tripitaka thanked him without end, saying, "Disciple, ah, how much toil and hardship you've suffered for my sake." Wukong laughed and said, "Truly it was hard toil. You were all just hanging there suffering pain, while old Monkey never once stopped to rest, running back and forth worse than a relay-station courier, back and forth, inside and outside, racing about without end.退。」:「It was only because I stole his treasures that I was able to beat back the demons." Zhu Bajie said, "Elder brother, take out that gourd and let us have a look.。」:「"I'm only afraid that the Second Demon King has already transformed himself." The Great Sage first untied the Water-Purifying Vase from his waist, then took out the golden rope and the fan, and finally held the little gourd in his hand, saying, "Don't look, don't look.He once disguised himself as old Sun before, and old Sun rinsed his mouth with water, tricking him into opening the lid, so that old Sun was able to get away.。」We must on no account lift the lid, for fear he too might play some trick and escape." Master and disciples, joyful and delighted, sought out the rice, flour, and vegetables in the cave, scoured out the stove and pots, and prepared a vegetarian meal to eat.Having eaten their fill, they went to sleep in the cave, and the night passed without incident; soon it was dawn again.

Now to speak of the old demon king: he went straight to Yalong Mountain, gathered together the female demons great and small, and told them in full how his mother had been beaten to death, how his younger brother had been disguised and impersonated, how the demon soldiers had been utterly wiped out, and how the treasures had been stolen by trickery.:「All the female demons wailed together, grieving bitterly for a long while, until he said, "You need not be so sorrowful.。」:「。」I still have this Seven-Star Sword at my side; I mean to gather you female soldiers, and we shall all go behind Yalong Mountain to call upon our relatives on my mother's side, and we are absolutely determined to capture that Sun Wukong and avenge ourselves." Before he had finished speaking, a little demon outside the gate reported, "Great King, the old maternal uncle from behind the mountain has led a number of troops here." Hearing this, the old demon quickly changed into plain mourning clothes and bowed to receive him.It turned out that this old maternal uncle was the younger brother of his mother, named the Great King Hu A-qi, the Fox.Having heard the demon soldiers on watch-mountain report that his elder sister had been beaten to death by Sun Wukong, who had falsely transformed himself into her shape and stolen his nephew's treasures, and who for several days had been resisting the enemy at Pingding Mountain, he at once led over two hundred demon soldiers of his own cave, coming specially to aid in battle, and for this reason had first gone to his sister's home to ask for news.No sooner had he entered the gate than he saw the old demon wearing mourning clothes, and the two of them wept loudly together. After weeping for a long while, the old demon bowed down and related the whole affair in detail. That A-qi flew into a great rage, and at once ordered the old demon to change into mourning armor and take up his sword; he mustered all the female demons, joined them into a single force, rode the wind and clouds, and headed straight for the northeast.

Meanwhile the Great Sage had Sha Monk prepare the morning meal, so that they might eat and be on their way.西Suddenly he heard the sound of wind, went out the door to look, and saw it was a band of demon soldiers coming from the southwest.:「。」:「?」:「Pilgrim was greatly alarmed; he quickly turned and hastily called out to Eight Rules, "Brother, the demon has sent for reinforcements again." When Tripitaka heard this, he was so frightened his color changed, and said, "Disciple, what shall we do about this?" Pilgrim laughed and said, "Set your mind at ease, set your mind at ease.。」Give me all these treasures." The Great Sage tied the gourd and the Water-Purifying Vase at his waist, tucked the golden rope into his sleeve, stuck the plantain fan behind his shoulder, and gripped his iron cudgel with both hands. He told Sha Monk to guard the Master and sit tight in the cave.He had Eight Rules take up his rake, and together they went out of the cave to meet the enemy.

The demon host arrayed itself in battle formation, and at its head, he saw, was the Great King A-qi.He was jade-faced with a long beard, steel eyebrows and blade-like ears;穿on his head he wore a gold-chained helmet, on his body he wore chain-mail armor, and in his hand he held a rectangular-bladed halberd.:「He cursed loudly, "You bold, insolent monkey! How dare you bully people so?You stole our treasures, injured our kinfolk, killed our demon soldiers, and now you dare occupy our cave dwelling for so long.。」:「Best that each of you stretch out your necks and accept death at once, to avenge my sister's household." Pilgrim cursed back, "You bunch of hairy creatures courting death, you don't recognize your Grandfather Sun's skill.。」使Don't run, take this blow of my cudgel." The demon dodged aside and thrust his rectangular halberd straight at his face in return. The two of them fought back and forth atop the mountain, and after three or four rounds of combat that demon's strength grew weak.He was defeated and turned to flee.Pilgrim chased after him, but was intercepted by the old demon king. They fought another three rounds, when he saw that Hu A-qi, the Fox, had turned back to attack again.Seeing this from his side, Eight Rules quickly raised his nine-toothed rake to block him.One against one, they fought for a long time without either side winning, until the old demon gave a shout, and the demon soldiers all closed in together.

Meanwhile Tripitaka, sitting in the Lotus Flower Cave, heard shouts shaking the ground, and called out, "Sha Monk, go out and see how your elder brother's battle is faring." Sha Monk did indeed raise his demon-quelling staff and go out, and with a shout charged forth, driving back the swarm of demons.A-qi, seeing the situation was unfavorable, turned and fled;Eight Rules caught up with him and struck one blow of the rake square on his back, so that nine points of fresh blood spurted outward, and alas, his single true spirit went on to its next life.He hastily dragged him over and stripped off his clothes to look, and it turned out he too was a fox spirit.

When the old demon king saw his old uncle had been struck down, he abandoned Pilgrim, raised his precious sword, and slashed at Eight Rules;使Eight Rules used his rake to block it.便Just as they were locked in combat, Sha Monk rushed up close and raised his staff to strike. That demon, unable to withstand them, rode the wind and clouds and fled south.Eight Rules and Sha Monk chased after him closely.:「。」Seeing this, the Great Sage quickly rode his cloud and leaped into the air, untied the Water-Purifying Vase, and held it aimed at the old demon, calling out, "Golden Horn Great King!" The demon, thinking it was one of his own defeated little demons calling out, turned his head and answered. With a whoosh he was sucked inside, and Pilgrim sealed it with the talisman reading "By Order of Lord Lao Zi, Let It Be Done at Once as the Law Decrees."Just then the Seven-Star Sword fell to the dust, and it too came into Pilgrim's possession.:「?」:「。」Eight Rules came up to meet him, saying, "Brother, you've got the sword — where is the demon now?" Pilgrim laughed, "All settled, all settled — he's already sealed inside this vase of mine." When Sha Monk heard this, he and Eight Rules were overjoyed.

:「。」At that time they swept the mountain clean of all evil, returned to the cave, and reported the good news to Tripitaka, saying, "The mountain is cleared, the demons are no more; please, Master, mount your horse and let us be on our way." Tripitaka was overjoyed beyond measure.西Master and disciples ate their morning meal, packed up the luggage and the horse, and pressed on westward in search of the road.

:「Just as they were traveling along, they suddenly saw a blind man step out from beside the road, come forward, and seize hold of Tripitaka's horse, saying, "Monk, where are you going?。」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「?」:「Give me back my treasures." Eight Rules was greatly alarmed and said, "That's it, this is the old demon come to demand his treasures." Pilgrim looked closely, and it turned out to be Lord Lao Zi, the Great Supreme One; in a panic he stepped forward and made a bow, saying, "Old Sir, where are you off to?" The Patriarch quickly ascended his Jade Bureau throne and stood in the ninefold heavens, calling out, "Sun Wukong, give me back my treasures." The Great Sage rose into the air and said, "What treasures?" Lao Jun said, "The gourd is what I use to hold my elixir, the vase is what I use to hold water, the sword is what I use to subdue demons, the fan is what I use to fan fire, and the rope is a single cord I use to tie my robe.As for those two demons: one was my page who tends the golden brazier, and the other was my page who tends the silver brazier.。」:「Only because they stole my treasures and ran down into the mortal world, and I had no place to seek them, did it happen that you have now captured them and gained this achievement." The Great Sage said, "You, old sir, are truly discourteous.。」:「To let your household members loose to do evil — you ought to be charged with the crime of lax control and discipline." Lao Jun said, "This is none of my doing; you must not wrongly blame the innocent.西。」:「This was the Bodhisattva of the Sea, who borrowed them from me three times, and sent them here disguised as demons to test whether you and your master truly have sincere hearts in going west." Hearing this, the Great Sage thought to himself, "This Bodhisattva is really far too meddlesome.西Back when she released old Sun and had him escort Tang Priest west to fetch the scriptures, I said the road would be hard and difficult to travel, and she once promised that when I reached direst straits, she herself would come to my rescue;使yet now instead she sends demons and spirits to torment and harm us.If her words don't hold true, she deserves to go a whole lifetime without a husband. If it weren't that you, old sir, had come in person, I would absolutely not have handed him over.。」Since you put it this way, then take them and go."

Lao Jun, having received the five treasures, lifted the lid of the gourd and the mouth of the vase, and poured out two wisps of immortal vapor. He pointed with his hand, and they turned once more into the golden and silver pages, who followed at his left and right. Then there was a myriad rays of rosy light — ah!

In the end, what happened afterward, and how the Great Sage Sun protected Tang Priest, and when they would reach the Western Heaven, is not yet known; listen to the explanation in the next chapter.

What it’s about

With the gourd and vase finally his, Wukong turns the demons' own weapon back on them: he calls Silver Horn by name, and when the demon answers he is sucked into the gourd and melted. Gold Horn fights on with the remaining treasures, a plantain fan and a magic rope, but Wukong now outmatches him, captures him too, and frees Tripitaka, Bajie and Sha at last.

As Wukong prepares to finish the two kings, Laozi descends from the Tushita Palace and claims them: they are the boy attendants who tend his gold and silver furnaces, loosed onto the road, so it is said, to test the pilgrims' resolve, and the treasures are all his as well. The demons become boys again and follow their master back to heaven, and the mountain falls quiet.

When it was written 背景

This 回 closes the Level-Top Mountain arc by reversing its central trick, the name-calling gourd now works for Wukong, and by the familiar revelation that the demons were celestial servants on loan. The return of Laozi's furnace-boys ties the episode back to Wukong's own furnace ordeal early in the book. Learners should note the neat symmetry of the ending and the recurring moral frame in which many trials turn out to be staged from above to prove the pilgrims worthy.
