The Pilgrims Arrive at the Precious Wood Monastery

036Chapter 36

Now, Sun Xingzhe brought his cloud down and told his master in full detail how the Bodhisattva had borrowed the boy and Laojun had taken back his treasures.西Sanzang thanked him again and again, and with his mind set firm and his devotion sincere, resolved to give his life to the westward journey; he climbed into the saddle, Zhu Bajie shouldered the luggage, Sha Heshang led the horse by the head, and Sun Xingzhe, gripping his iron staff, cleared the way ahead as they went straight down the high mountain and pressed onward.宿Words cannot tell of all the nights lodged by water and meals snatched in the wind, the frost braved and the dew endured.

Master and disciples had traveled a long while when once again a mountain blocked the road ahead.:「。」:「。」:「西Sanzang called out loudly from atop his horse: "Disciples, look how towering and precipitous that mountain is—we must be careful and on our guard, for I fear some demonic obstruction may again assail us." Xingzhe said, "Master, don't let your mind run wild with idle thoughts; just settle your nature and preserve your spirit, and naturally nothing will happen." Sanzang said, "Disciple, why is the road to the Western Heaven so hard to travel??」:「。」:「I remember that since leaving the city of Chang'an, spring has ended and summer come, autumn has waned and winter arrived, for four or five years now on the road—why have we still not arrived?" Hearing this, Xingzhe laughed heartily and said, "Too soon, too soon—we haven't even gotten out the front gate yet." Bajie said, "Brother, don't tell tall tales.?」:「。」:「Is there really such a huge gate in the human world?" Xingzhe said, "Brother, we're still turning about in the main hall." Sha Seng laughed and said, "Elder brother, don't tell big tales to scare me.。」:「。」:「。」:「。」Where would there be such an enormous main hall, and nowhere could one even buy a beam that big." Xingzhe said, "Brother, in old Sun's view, take the blue sky as the roof tiles, the sun and moon as the window lattices, the four mountains and five peaks as the beams and pillars, and heaven and earth are just like one great open hall." Hearing this, Bajie said, "Enough, enough—let's just turn around after a while and go back." Xingzhe said, "No need for such nonsense—just follow along behind old Sun."

That splendid Great Sage slung his iron staff crosswise, led Tang Seng onward, cleared the mountain path, and pressed straight ahead. The master, gazing far off from atop his horse, beheld a fine view of the mountain.Truly it was:

:「The master, trembling with fear, entered this deep mountain, his heart filled with dread; reining in his horse, he called out: "Wukong!I—

:「。」西Hearing this, the Great Sage Sun gave a cold laugh and said, "Master, there's no need to worry, don't fret so—just set your mind at ease and press on, and in the end your labors will naturally come to fruition." Master and disciples, admiring the mountain scenery, walked on at a leisurely pace, and before they knew it the red wheel of the sun had already sunk in the west.Just as it is said:

The elder, looking far off from atop his horse, saw in a hollow of the mountain terraces and towers rising tier upon tier, halls and pavilions ranged one behind another.:「宿。」:「Sanzang said, "Disciples, the sky is already growing dark; fortunately there are towers and pavilions not far off over there—it must be some nunnery, temple, or monastery. Let us all go there to beg lodging for the night, and set off again tomorrow." Xingzhe said, "Master speaks rightly.。」Don't be in a hurry—let me first see whether it bodes well or ill." The Great Sage leapt into the air and looked closely, and indeed it was a monastery gate.Behold:

The Great Sage Sun brought his cloud down and reported to Sanzang, "Master, it is indeed a monastery, and just right for lodging—let us go there."

The elder gave his horse free rein and came straight on, arriving directly outside the monastery gate.:「?」:「。」:「Xingzhe said, "Master, what temple is this one?" Sanzang said, "My horse's hooves have only just stopped, my toes have not even left the stirrups, and you ask me what temple this is—how utterly unreasonable." Xingzhe said, "You, sir, have been a monk since childhood; surely you once studied the Confucian classics before going on to expound the scriptures and the Dharma, being thoroughly versed in letters and principle, and only then received the Tang emperor's gracious favor.?」:「There are such large characters on the gate—how could you not recognize them?" The elder scolded, "You impudent monkey!Your words show no sense.西。」:「。」」。I was just now facing west urging on the horse, and was dazzled by the glare of the sun—though there are characters on the gate, they were obscured by dust and grime, so I never saw them." Hearing this, Xingzhe bent at the waist and stretched himself up more than two zhang tall, and with his hand brushed away the dust, saying, "Master, please look." Above were five large characters, reading: "Imperially Founded Baolin Temple.":「宿?」:「Xingzhe drew back his transformed body and said, "Master, who is going in to ask for lodging at this temple?" Sanzang said, "I will go in. :「。」Your faces are ugly and your speech is coarse, your natures stubborn and your manners arrogant; should you offend the monks of this place and they refuse us lodging, it would turn out badly." Xingzhe said, "Since that is so, please go in, Master—there's no need to say more."

The elder then set down his monk's staff, undid his cloak, straightened his robe, pressed his palms together, and went straight in through the monastery gate.He saw that within the red-lacquered balustrades on either side sat, high up, a pair of Vajra guardians, molded with a fierce and ugly majesty:

Seeing this, Sanzang nodded and sighed at length, saying, "If in my Land of the East someone were also to mold such great Bodhisattvas of clay and burn incense to worship them, then I, your disciple, would not need to go to the Western Heaven at all." Just as he was sighing, he came to within the second gate of the monastery.西調He saw the images of the Four Heavenly Kings—Dhrtarastra, Vaisravana, Virudhaka, and Virupaksa—representing, according to east, north, west, and south, the meaning of favorable wind and timely rain.Passing through the second gate, he further saw four tall pine trees, each one with a lush green canopy spreading out like the shape of an umbrella.殿Suddenly raising his head, he found before him the Mahavira Hall. The elder pressed his palms together in reverent submission and stretched out his body to bow down.Having finished bowing, he rose, went around the Buddha's altar, and came beneath the rear door. There he further saw an image, facing the rear, of Guanyin universally ferrying beings across from the Southern Sea.On the wall were all shrimp, fish, crabs, and turtles molded by skilled craftsmen, showing their heads and tails, leaping and playing in the surging waves of the sea.:「The elder nodded his head several times more, and with countless sighs of deep feeling said, "How pitiful!?」Even scaly and armored creatures all worship the Buddha—why is it that human beings are unwilling to cultivate themselves?"

Just as he was marveling, he saw a lay attendant come walking out from within the third gate. The attendant, suddenly seeing that Sanzang's features were extraordinary and his bearing far from common, hurried forward and bowed in greeting, saying, "Master, where have you come from?" Sanzang said, "This disciple has been sent by decree of the Great Tang of the Eastern Land to go to the Western Heaven to worship the Buddha and seek the scriptures. :「Now, having arrived at your esteemed place with the sky about to darken, I beg to borrow lodging for the night." The attendant said, "Master, do not take offense—I have no authority here; I am only an attendant here who sweeps the floors, strikes the bell, and does the chores.Inside there is an elder master in charge of household affairs—let me go in and report to him.If he agrees to keep you, I will come out to invite you in respectfully;。」:「。」if he will not keep you, then I dare not detain you any longer." Sanzang said, "I trouble you greatly."

穿The attendant hurried to the abbot's quarters and reported, "My lord, someone has come outside." The monk-official at once rose, changed his robes, straightened his Vairocana hat, put on his cassock, and hurriedly opened the door to receive the guest, asking the attendant, "Where has this person come from?" The attendant pointed with his hand and said, "Isn't that a person behind the main hall there?" There was Sanzang, his head bare, wearing a twenty-five-strip Dharma robe, his feet in a pair of mud-dragging monk's shoes, leaning at a slant by the rear door.:「Seeing this, the monk-official grew greatly angry and said, "You attendant, you deserve a beating!Don't you know that I am the monastery's official, and that I only come out to receive gentlemen and officials from the city who come to burn incense? For a monk like this, why did you exaggerate falsely and report to me to go receive him?宿Look at his face—he's no honest man, most likely some wandering monk from the roads, and since it's late today, he probably wants to borrow lodging. How could we let him disturb our abbot's quarters??」Just tell him to squat under the front corridor and be done with it—why report it to me?" And he turned and withdrew.

滿:「Hearing this, the elder's eyes filled with tears, and he said, "How pitiful, how pitiful! This is truly what is meant by 'a man away from home is held cheap.'I, your disciple, left the household since childhood and became a monk; I have never performed penances while secretly eating meat and harboring evil thoughts, nor read the scriptures while nursing anger that ruins the meditative mind;殿nor have I ever thrown tiles or bricks to damage a Buddha hall, or scraped the real gold from an Arhat's face.Ah!How pitiful!。 I know not in which former life I offended Heaven and Earth, that in this life I should so often meet with unkind people.—Monk, if you will not give us lodging, so be it, but why say such worthless words, telling us to go squat under the front corridor?。」:「It is just as well not to tell this to Xingzhe—if I did, that monkey would come in and give you such a beating with his iron staff that he'd smash your ankle bones to pieces." The elder said, "Well, so be it, so be it.:『。』?」As the common saying goes, 'In dealing with people, courtesy comes first.' Let me go in and ask him once more, and see what his intentions are."

The master retraced his steps and followed him in through the door of the abbot's quarters. There he saw the monk-official, having taken off his robes, sitting there fuming with anger; it was unclear whether he was reciting scriptures or writing up ritual documents for some family, and on the desk lay a pile of papers.:「。」 Tang Seng dared not go in too far, and stood in the courtyard, bowing and calling out loudly, "Venerable abbot, this disciple pays his respects." The monk showed some impatience at his coming further inside, and returned the greeting half-heartedly, saying, "Where have you come from?" Sanzang said, "This disciple has been sent by decree of the Great Tang of the Eastern Land to go to the Western Heaven to worship the Living Buddha and seek the scriptures.宿Passing through your esteemed place, with the sky growing dark, I beg to borrow lodging for one night, and will set off again tomorrow before it is even fully light. I earnestly hope the venerable abbot will grant this small favor." Only then did the monk-official rise halfway and say, "Are you that Tang Sanzang?" Sanzang said, "I would not presume—this disciple is indeed he." The monk-official said, "If you are going to the Western Heaven to fetch scriptures, how is it you don't even know the way?" Sanzang said, "This disciple has never before traveled the roads of your honored region." He said, "Due west from here, only some four or five li away, there is a place called Thirty-Li Inn, where there are households selling meals—convenient and good for lodging.便。」:「:『。』 :「?」:「:『It is inconvenient here—I cannot properly keep monks who have traveled so far as you." Sanzang pressed his palms together and said, "Abbot, the ancients had a saying: 'Nunneries, temples, and monasteries are all the inns of we wandering monks; the mere sight of a monastery gate entitles one to three sheng of rice.' Why then will you not keep me—what is the reason for this?" The monk-official cried out angrily, "You wandering monk, you do have a way of talking with a slick and oily tongue." Sanzang said, "What do you mean by 'slick and oily tongue'?" The monk-official said, "The ancients said: 'When a tiger enters the city, every household shuts its doors.。』」:「』?」:「Even though it bites no one, its reputation was ruined long before.'" Sanzang said, "How is it that 'its reputation was ruined long before'?" He said, "In years past there were several wandering monks who came and sat down at our monastery gate.Seeing how poor and thin-clad they were, each with torn clothes and no shoes, bare-headed and bare-footed, I pitied their ragged state and hastily invited them into the abbot's quarters, seated them as guests of honor, treated them to vegetarian meals, and even lent each of them an old garment, and let them stay for a few days.Who could have known that, coveting the comfort of food and clothing, they never once thought of leaving, and ended up staying seven or eight years.便。」:「?」:「Their staying would have been bad enough, but they went on to do all sorts of improper things besides." Sanzang said, "What sort of improper things?" The monk-official said, "Listen to me:

:「Hearing these words, Sanzang thought secretly to himself, "How pitiful!?」Am I, your disciple, the sort of spineless monk he describes?" He wanted to weep, but feared the old monk of the temple would laugh at him, so he secretly pulled his robe to wipe his tears, swallowed his anger in silence, and hurried out to find his three disciples.:「?」:「。」:「Seeing anger on his master's face, Xingzhe stepped forward and asked, "Master, did the monks of the temple beat you?" Tang Seng said, "They did not beat me." Bajie said, "They must have beaten you;?」:「?」:「。」:「if not, why is there still a hint of crying in your voice?" Xingzhe said, "Did they curse you?" Tang Seng said, "They did not curse me either." Xingzhe said, "If they neither beat nor cursed you, why are you so distressed??」:「便。」:「?」:「。」:「Could it be you're homesick?" Tang Seng said, "Disciple, it's just that things are not convenient for us here." Xingzhe laughed and said, "This must be a place of Daoist priests?" Tang Seng said angrily, "It is Daoist shrines that have priests—this is a Buddhist temple, and there are only monks here." Xingzhe said, "You're just no good at this.As long as they're monks, they're the same kind as us.:『。』。」As the saying goes: 'All who gather beneath the Buddha's banner are people bound by karmic affinity.' You just sit down and rest, and let me go in and take a look."

殿:「That splendid Xingzhe pressed down the golden band on his head, tightened the sash at his waist, and gripping his iron staff, went straight to the Mahavira Hall, and pointing at the three Buddha images, said, "You are, at root, but false images of clay molded and gilded with gold—yet within, how could there be no spiritual response?西宿Old Sun here is escorting the sage monk of the Great Tang to the Western Heaven to worship the Buddha and fetch the true scriptures; tonight we have come specially to seek lodging here—report our names for me at once;。」if you do not let us stay, I will smash your golden bodies to pieces with a single beating of my staff, and make you reveal your true form as mere clay again."

Just as the Great Sage was up front venting his fury and ranting away, he saw an attendant who had come to burn the evening incense light a few sticks and step up to insert them in the censer before the Buddha.Startled by Xingzhe's sudden shout, the man fell down in fright;scrambling up and catching sight of his face, he fell down again;:「。」:「terrified, he stumbled and staggered his way into the abbot's quarters and reported, "My lord, there's a monk come outside." The monk-official said, "You attendants all deserve a beating.I already told you to have him squat under the front corridor—why report it again?。」:「。」 Say one more word and I'll give you twenty strokes." The attendant said, "My lord, this monk is different from the other one: he looks fierce and short-tempered, and reckless." The monk-official said, "What does he look like?" The attendant said, "He has round eyes, jagged ears, a face full of hair, and a mouth like the Thunder God.。」:「。」He holds a staff in his hand and grinds his teeth fiercely, looking to find someone to beat." The monk-official said, "Let me go out and see."

He at once opened the door, and there was Xingzhe barging his way in.Truly he was ugly to behold: a bony, uneven, lumpy face, two yellow eyes, a jutting forehead, and protruding fangs growing outward. He looked just like something born under the sign of the crab, with the flesh inside and the bones outside. The old monk, in his panic, shut the door of the abbot's quarters.:「。」:「Xingzhe rushed up and with a crash smashed open the door panel, saying, "Hurry up and sweep clean a thousand rooms for old Sun to sleep in." The monk-official, hiding inside the room, said to the attendant, "No wonder he looks so ugly—it turns out his face has been twisted into this shape by all his boasting. Here, counting the abbot's quarters, the Buddha hall, the bell and drum towers, and the two side corridors all together, we don't even have three hundred rooms in all, yet he wants a thousand rooms to sleep in—where is that supposed to come from?" The attendant said, "Master, I too am a man whose gall bladder has burst from fright—just answer him however you see fit." The monk-official, trembling all over, called out loudly, "Venerable elder who sought lodging, my humble little mountain temple is not convenient, and I dare not presume to keep you—please go lodge elsewhere."

:「Xingzhe turned his staff so it grew as thick as a washbasin, and stood it up straight and stiff in the courtyard, saying, "Monk, if it's not convenient, then you move out." The monk-official said, "This is a temple we've lived in since childhood; our grand-master passed it to our master, and our master passed it to us, and we mean to pass it on far into future generations of disciples.。」:「。」:「He, coming from who knows where, recklessly tells us to move out." The attendant said, "My lord, this is no small matter—we might as well move out, since that great club has already smashed its way in through the door." The monk-official said, "Don't talk nonsense—all of us, old and young, four or five hundred monks, where would we move to?。」 :「。」:「If we move out, we'd have nowhere to live." Overhearing this, Xingzhe said, "Monk, if there's nowhere to move to, then send someone out to take a sample beating." The old monk called to the attendant, "You go out and take a sample beating for me." The attendant, panicking, said, "Grandfather!?」:「『。』?」:「。」 :「?」A club that huge, and you want me to go take a sample beating with it?" The old monk said, "'An army is kept a thousand days for use in a single morning.' Why won't you go out?" The attendant said, "Never mind being struck by that club—if it merely fell over, it would crush a person into mincemeat." The old monk said, "Never mind falling over either—just standing upright there in the courtyard, if someone forgets it's there while walking at night, they'd knock a great hole in their head just running into it." The attendant said, "Master, if you yourself know it's this heavy, why do you tell me to go out and take some sample beating?" And so they fell to quarreling among themselves inside.

:「Overhearing this, Xingzhe said, "That's true, it can't be endured either—if I were to kill one of them with a single blow of my staff, my master would again blame me for acting violently.。」Let me instead find something else to strike, to show you." Suddenly raising his head, he saw a stone lion outside the door of the abbot's quarters, and at once raised his staff and, with a crash, smashed it to powder and bits. The monk, watching through a chink in the window, was so terrified his bones went soft and his muscles numb, and he scrambled hastily to burrow under the bed;:「便便!」:「the attendant crawled straight into the stove opening, his mouth crying out without stopping, "Grandfather, the club is too heavy, too heavy, I can't bear it—have mercy, have mercy!" Xingzhe said, "Monk, I won't beat you.?」:「。」 :「。」 I ask you: how many monks are there in this temple?" The monk-official, trembling, said, "Front and back there are two hundred and eighty-five chambers, with a total of five hundred monks holding ordination certificates." Xingzhe said, "Go quickly and have all five hundred monks assembled in proper order, dressed in their long robes, and go bring my Tang master in, and then I won't beat you." The monk-official said, "Grandfather, if you won't beat us, we'll even carry him in on our shoulders." Xingzhe said, "Go at once, then." The monk-official called to the attendant, "Even if your gall has burst from fright, or even your very heart has burst from fright, go all the same and call these people to come receive Elder Tang Seng."

The attendant, having no other choice, risked his very life, not daring to go through the door, and crawled out instead through a dog-hole in the back, going straight to the main hall, where he beat the drum on the east side and struck the bell on the west. As the bell and drum sounded together, they startled the monks great and small in the two side corridors, who came up to the hall and asked, "It's still early, not yet evening—why strike the bell and beat the drum?" The attendant said, "Quickly change your robes, and follow the old master in ranks out through the monastery gate, to receive the venerable lord who has come from the Tang court." The monks then truly formed up in proper, orderly ranks and went out the gate to receive him. Some wore their cassocks;some put on their slant-collared robes;穿those with nothing else wore a bell-shaped straight robe;and those who were extremely poor and had no long robe simply joined two waist-aprons together and draped them over their bodies.:「穿?」:「Seeing this, Xingzhe said, "Monk, what sort of garment is that you're wearing?" The monk, seeing how fierce and ugly he looked, said, "Grandfather, don't beat me, let me explain.。」This is cloth we begged for in the city; there's no tailor here, so we made it ourselves—it's called a 'wrap-up-poverty.'"

Hearing this, Xingzhe secretly laughed, and herding the monks along, brought them out of the monastery gate to kneel down.:「。」:「The monk-official kowtowed and called out loudly, "Venerable Lord Tang, please come sit in the abbot's quarters." Seeing this, Bajie said, "Master, you're really no good at this—when you went in, your eyes were brimming with tears and your mouth was hanging down as if an oil jug hung from it.?」:「How did elder brother manage such clever wit, to make them come kowtowing to receive us?" Sanzang said, "You idiot, you know nothing of propriety at all.:『。』」:「。」 :「。」:「As the saying goes, 'Even ghosts fear a fierce man.'" Seeing them kowtowing and bowing, Tang Seng felt quite uneasy, and stepped forward calling, "All of you, please rise." The monks kowtowed and said, "My lord, if you would just say a word of mercy to your disciple and keep him from swinging that club, we would gladly kneel for a whole month." Tang Seng called out, "Wukong, do not beat them." Xingzhe said, "I never beat them;。」if I had, by now their very roots would already be broken off." Only then did the monks rise, some leading the horse, some carrying the loads, some bearing Tang Seng on a litter, some carrying Bajie, some supporting Sha Seng by the arm, and together they all went in through the monastery gate, on to the abbot's quarters at the back, where they took their seats in proper order.

The monks then bowed in reverence once more.:「。」:「Sanzang said, "Abbot, please rise—there is no need for further ceremony, which only mortifies this poor monk; you and I are both disciples of the Buddha's gate." The monk-official said, "My lord is an envoy from the Celestial Court above, and this lowly monk failed properly to receive you.Now that you have come to this humble mountain, it is only that my worldly eyes failed to recognize your honored countenance, and so I chanced to meet you as if a stranger.May I ask, master: along the road, do you eat vegetarian food?Or do you eat meat?。」:「。」:「。」:「。」:「So that we may go and prepare the meal." Tripitaka said, "We eat vegetarian." The monk-official said, "Disciple, this master here looks like he'd relish meat." Sun Wukong said, "We too eat vegetarian — vegetarian from the womb, all of us." The monk said, "Oh, master!?」:「?」:「Such a fierce-looking fellow eats vegetarian too?" One bold monk stepped forward and asked further, "Since you gentlemen eat vegetarian, how much rice must be cooked to be enough?" Bajie said, "Small-minded monk, what are you asking that for?。」便Just cook up a picul of rice for each of us." The monks were all thrown into a panic, and hurried off to scrub the pots and stoves, arranging tea and food in each of the rooms.調They raised bright lamps aloft, arranged the tables and chairs, and attended to Tang Seng.

Master and disciples all finished their evening vegetarian meal, and the monks cleared away the utensils.:「。」:「Tripitaka expressed his thanks, saying, "Venerable Abbot, we have troubled your treasured mountain." The monk-official said, "I dare not accept such thanks, I dare not.。」:「?」:「。」 :「We have been remiss, quite remiss." Tripitaka said, "Might my disciples and I rest here for the night?" The monk-official said, "Do not be anxious, master; this humble monk will see to the arrangements himself." He called out, "Acolytes, are there a few of you over there waiting to be of service?" The acolytes replied, "Master, yes, here we are." The monk-official instructed, "Two of you go and prepare fodder, to feed Master Tang's horse.。」"Let several of you go to the front and sweep clean those three meditation halls, set up the beds and curtains, and quickly invite the masters to rest."

The acolytes obeyed the order, each attending to his task until everything was made ready, and then came to invite Master Tang to retire for the night.Master and disciples led the horse and carried the luggage, left the abbot's quarters, and went straight to the door of the meditation hall to look; there inside the lamps burned bright, and in the two side rooms four rattan-mesh beds had been laid out.Seeing this, Wukong called to the acolyte who had prepared the fodder to carry it into the meditation hall, tethered the white horse there, and told the acolytes all to leave.Tripitaka sat in the middle.Under the lamplight, five hundred monks stood in two rows, all attending upon him, not daring to withdraw.:「。」退Tripitaka rose slightly and said, "Gentlemen, please go back to your rest; this poor monk will settle down comfortably on his own." Yet the assembled monks absolutely dared not withdraw.:「。」:「。」The monk-official stepped forward and instructed the crowd, "Wait upon the masters until they are settled before you return." Tripitaka said, "This right here is already being settled; you may all please go back now." Only then did everyone dare to disperse.

:「。」Tang Seng stepped out the door to relieve himself, and seeing the bright moon hanging in the sky, called out, "Disciples!" Wukong, Bajie, and Sha Seng all came out and stood attending him.Moved by the moon's clear, bright light and the deep stillness of the jade heavens, truly a single round orb shining aloft, making the whole earth distinct and clear.Facing the moon, his thoughts turned to home, and he recited extempore a long poem in the ancient style. The poem said:

:「Hearing this, Wukong stepped forward and answered, "Master, ah, you know only that the moonlight is bright and radiant, and your heart longs for your native home, but you do not know the deeper meaning of the moon — it is the very rule and pattern of the innate images of Heaven.』。When the moon reaches the thirtieth day, the gold of the yang-soul is entirely dispersed, and the water of the yin-spirit fills the whole disk, so it is purely dark and without light — this is called 'the dark of the moon.'At this time it intersects with the sun, and in the two days between the 'dark' and the 'new moon,' it is stirred by the sun's light and becomes pregnant with it.』。By the third day one yang appears, and by the eighth day a second yang is born; within the spirit-substance the soul is now half-present, level as a stretched cord, so it is called the 'first quarter.'』。By the fifteenth day, the three yangs are fully complete, and thus it becomes round and whole — this is called the 'full moon.'』。By the sixteenth day one yin is born, and by the twenty-second day a second yin is born; at this time within the soul the spirit-substance is half-present, level as a stretched cord, so it is called the 'last quarter.'』。By the thirtieth day the three yins are fully complete, and it likewise reaches 'the dark of the moon' again. This is the meaning of gathering and refining the innate essence. If we can gently nurture the 'two eights' and complete the 'nine nines,' then at that time, seeing the Buddha will be easy, and returning to our original field will likewise be easy."The poem said:

Hearing this, the elder at once came to understanding, grasping the true words thoroughly.滿His heart filled with joy, and he offered his thanks to Wukong.:「Sha Seng, standing by, said with a smile, "Though what Elder Brother says is fitting, he has only spoken of how before the quarter-moon belongs to yang and after the quarter-moon belongs to yin, and how within the yin the yang is half-present, gaining the metal of water;but he has not yet spoken of—

Hearing this, the elder likewise had his blocked understanding opened.Truly it was:

:「Bajie stepped forward, pulled at the elder's sleeve, and said, "Master, don't listen to this nonsense talk and delay your sleep. As for this moon—

:「Tripitaka said, "Very well, disciples, you have all toiled hard on the road; go and lie down to sleep first.。」:「Let me recite this scroll of scripture for a while." Wukong said, "Master, you are mistaken. You left home to become a monk since childhood — which scripture from your youth is not already familiar to you?西Moreover, you have received the Tang Emperor's decree to go to the Western Heaven to see the Buddha and seek the true scriptures of the Great Vehicle.?」:「Now the task is not yet complete, the Buddha not yet seen, the scriptures not yet obtained — so which scripture are you reciting?" Tripitaka said, "Ever since I left Chang'an, trudging on morning after morning, hurrying on day after day, I fear the scriptures I knew in my youth have grown unfamiliar.。」:「。」Fortunately I have some leisure tonight, so let me review them a little." Wukong said, "Since that is how it is, we will go to sleep first." The three of them each lay down on a rattan bed.The elder closed the door of the meditation hall, trimmed the silver lamp to burn brighter, spread open the scripture book, and read it over silently to himself.Truly it was that:

In the end, we do not know how the elder would leave the temple; listen to the next chapter for the explanation.

What it’s about

The road brings the pilgrims to the Precious-Wood Chan Monastery, where an arrogant abbot turns the shabby monk away until Wukong frightens the monks into hospitality. Lodged at last for the night, Tripitaka sits alone in the courtyard under a brilliant autumn moon and composes verses on his homesickness and the long road still ahead of him.

Wukong, Bajie and Sha join him, and the disciples cap his moon-poem each in his own voice, Wukong reading the moon as an emblem of the enlightened mind waxing to its fullness. The chapter is a quiet interlude of poetry and rest set between two dangers, letting the characters speak as themselves rather than fight, just before the ghost-king's trouble arrives in the depth of the night.

When it was written 背景

This 回 is one of the novel's lyrical breathing-spaces, built around a shared moon-gazing poem rather than a battle, and it shows the book's Chan-Buddhist layer directly: the full moon as the mind's own clear nature. Learners more used to the fight scenes should slow down here for the verse and the banter between master and disciples. The calm is deliberate staging, for that very night Tripitaka's dream will open the Wuji Kingdom mystery in the rooms where they sleep.
