Monkey Tricks the Demons and Steals Their Magic Gourds

034Chapter 34

To resume: the two little demons held the fake gourd in their hands, arguing over it for a while, when suddenly they looked up and found that Xingzhe had vanished.:「Clever Worm said, "Brother, even immortals tell lies.?」:「便He said that once we traded treasures, he'd help us all become immortals — why would he leave without a word?" Sharp Ghost said, "We're the ones who got the better deal — how could he possibly manage to leave?。」Bring the gourd here, let me try bottling up the sky with it, just to test it out." And indeed he tossed the gourd up into the air, and it fell straight back down with a thud.:「Clever Worm cried out in alarm, "Why didn't it bottle up anything? It didn't work??」:「Could it be that Sun Wukong disguised himself as an immortal and swapped his fake gourd for our real one?" Sharp Ghost said, "Don't talk nonsense — Sun Wukong is pinned beneath those three mountains, how could he possibly get out?。」 Hand it over, let me recite those few lines of incantation and try bottling it up myself." This demon too tossed the gourd up into the air, reciting as he did: "If there is even half a sound of refusal, I shall raise troops against the Hall of Divine Mists." Before he had even finished chanting, the gourd fell back down with a thud.:「。」The two demons said, "It won't bottle anything up — it must be a fake."

Just as they were quarreling over this, the Great Sage Sun, listening up in midair, heard every word clearly and saw everything plainly. Fearing that if he let this drag on too long something crucial might leak out and spoil the plan, he gave his body a shake and drew back onto himself the transformed hair that had become the gourd, leaving the two demons with nothing but empty hands.:「。」:「。」「Sharp Ghost said, "Brother, hand me the gourd." Clever Worm said, "You're the one holding it." "Heavens!?」How could it have vanished?" They both scrabbled about on the ground and rummaged through the grass, feeling inside their sleeves and patting at their waists, but how could it possibly be found there?:「The two demons, stunned and trembling, said, "What shall we do?What shall we do?When the Great King handed the treasure over to us just now, he told us to go capture Sun Wukong. Now not only have we failed to capture Xingzhe, but even the treasure itself is gone — how could we dare go back and report this? This time we'll surely be beaten to death outright. What shall we do!!」:「。」:「?」:「What shall we do!" Clever Worm said, "Let's just run away." Sharp Ghost said, "Run away to where?" Clever Worm said, "It doesn't matter where, let's just run.。」:「If we go back and say we've lost the treasure, we're certainly done for." Sharp Ghost said, "Don't run, let's go back after all.The Second Great King has always thought well of you — I'll push the blame onto myself and shield you.If he's willing to be lenient, our lives may be spared;if he won't listen to reason and beats us to death, at least it will happen here.Let's not end up dead at both ends with nothing gained.。」Come on, let's go." So the two demons talked it over and turned back toward the mountain.

Watching from midair as they headed back, Xingzhe shook himself again and turned into a fly, flying down to follow the little demons. You may ask, since he had turned himself into a fly, where then was the treasure kept?Had it been left lying on the road or hidden in the grass, it might have been spotted and taken by someone else — and all his effort would have been for nothing, wouldn't it?So he still kept it on his own body. But if it were on his body — a fly is no bigger than a bean, how could it possibly hold it?As it happens, that treasure of his, like his gold-banded staff, was called the As-You-Will Buddha Treasure, capable of transforming with its bearer, able to grow large or shrink small, and so it too could fit upon his body.

With a soft buzz he flew down and fixed himself upon that demon, following him closely. Before long, they arrived at the cave. There he saw the two demon chiefs sitting there drinking wine, while the little demon knelt before them.Xingzhe fastened himself onto the door frame, listening with ears pricked.:「。」:「?」:「。」:「?」The little demon said, "Great King." The Second Old Demon at once set down his cup and said, "You're back?" The little demon said, "Back." He then asked, "Have you captured Sun Wukong?" The little demon kowtowed and dared not speak. The Old Demon asked again, and still he dared not answer, only kowtowing.:「Asked three times over, the little demon prostrated himself on the ground: "Spare this lowly one ten thousand deaths, spare this lowly one ten thousand deaths.Holding the treasure, we had gone only halfway up the mountain when we suddenly encountered an immortal from Penglai Mountain.:『。』He asked us where we were going, and we answered, 'To capture Sun Wukong.' Upon hearing the name Sun Wukong, this immortal too grew angry at him, and offered to help us in the task.We did not in fact ask him to help, but we did tell him the whole matter of how the treasure captures people. This immortal also happened to have a gourd, one skilled at bottling up the sky.Out of foolish greed, and thinking to provide for our households, we thought: his bottles the sky, mine bottles people — let's trade with him.The original agreement was gourd for gourd, but Clever Worm also threw in a pure vase as an extra.Who could have known that his immortal object could not bear the touch of a mortal hand?Just as we were testing it, even the person himself vanished along with it.。」We beg most earnestly that our lowly deaths be forgiven."

:「On hearing this, the Old Demon flew into a thunderous rage, saying, "Enough, enough — this must be Sun Wukong disguising himself as an immortal to trick it away from you.。」:「That monkey-head has vast magical powers and knows people everywhere — I don't know which furry spirit let him out, but he tricked the treasure away." The Second Demon said, "Elder brother, calm your anger.便That hateful monkey-head is truly insolent — if he had the skill to escape, that would have been that, but why must he go and trick away our treasure as well?西。」:「?」:「。」:「?」:「If I lack the ability to catch him, I'll never again pose as a demon along the road to the West." The Old Demon said, "How will you catch him?" The Second Demon said, "We have five treasures; two are gone, but three remain — we must be sure to catch him with those." The Old Demon said, "Which three remain?" The Second Demon said, "The Seven-Star Sword and the Plantain Fan are still with me, and the Gold-Dazzling Rope is kept at Yalong Cave on Yalong Mountain, in the keeping of our old mother.。」:「?」:「。」Let us now send two little demons to invite Mother here to feast on Tang Monk's flesh, and have her bring the Gold-Dazzling Rope along to catch Sun Wukong." The Old Demon said, "Whom shall we send?" The Second Demon said, "We won't send those two useless wretches." And he gave a shout, summoning Sharp Ghost and Clever Worm to rise.:「。」:「。」:「。」:「。」「。」:「。」:「?」:「。」「The two of them said, "What luck, what luck — not beaten, not scolded, and pardoned after all." The Second Demon said, "Call the regular attendants Bashanhu and Yihailong here." The two knelt down, and the Second Demon instructed them, "You must be careful." Both answered, "Careful." "And you must be thorough." Both answered, "Thorough." He then asked, "Do you know where the Old Mother's home is?" Both again answered, "We know it." "Since you know it, hurry there at once, to the Old Mother's place, and give her my deepest regards, and say we invite her to come feast on Tang Monk's flesh;。」and have her bring the Gold-Dazzling Rope along, to catch Sun Wukong."

The two demons received the order and set off in haste.Little did they know that Xingzhe was right beside them and had heard every word clearly. He spread his wings and flew off, catching up to Bashanhu, and fixed himself upon his body. After traveling two or three li, he was about to strike the two of them dead.:「But then he thought again, "To kill them would be no difficult matter at all.。」But I still don't know where their old mother's Gold-Dazzling Rope is kept, nor where she lives — let me first ask them about it before I strike." The fine fellow, with a soft buzz, slipped away from the little demons and let them go ahead by a hundred paces or so.:「。」:「?」:「?」:「。」:「Then he shook himself and transformed again, turning into a little demon himself, wearing a fox-fur cap, with a tiger-skin skirt tucked up and cinched at the waist, and hurried after them, calling out, "You there on the road, wait for me a moment." Yihailong turned his head and asked, "Where do you come from?" Xingzhe said, "My good brother, don't you even recognize one of our own?" The little demon said, "There's no one like you in our household." Xingzhe said, "How can you say I'm not there?。」:「。」:「Look at me again, more carefully." The little demon said, "Your face is unfamiliar, unfamiliar — we've never met." Xingzhe said, "Exactly right.。」:「You haven't met me before, because I'm from the outer ranks." The little demon said, "Ah, an officer from the outer ranks — no wonder we haven't met.?」:「Where are you headed?" Xingzhe said, "The Great King ordered you two to invite the Old Mother to come feast on Tang Monk's flesh, and to have her bring the Gold-Dazzling Rope to capture Sun Wukong.。」Fearing you two might travel too slowly, perhaps lingering to play about and delaying this important matter, he sent me as well to hurry you along."

Hearing him speak of such inside secrets, the little demon no longer had any doubts at all, and truly took Xingzhe for one of their own.In great haste they flew onward, and in one stretch covered another eight or nine li.:「Xingzhe said, "We're going a bit too fast.?」:「。」:「?」:「。」How much farther is it from home now?" The little demon said, "About fifteen or sixteen li so far." Xingzhe said, "How much further still?" Yihailong pointed with his hand and said, "Just inside that black forest there." Xingzhe looked up and saw a stretch of dark forest not far off, and guessed that the old demoness must be somewhere in or around that forest. So he came to a stop and let the little demon walk ahead. He then drew out his iron rod, stepped up close behind, and swept it low across the back of their heels.Poor things, quite unable to withstand the blow, the two little demons were flattened into a single patty of flesh. He then dragged them by the feet and hid them in the deep grass at the roadside.便:「!」He at once plucked out a hair, blew a breath of immortal breath onto it, and cried, "Change!" It changed into a Bashanhu, while he himself transformed into a Yihailong.Disguised now as the two little demons, they headed straight for Yalong Cave to invite the Old Mother. This is what is called: the seventy-two transformations, mighty in their power; the skill of pointing at a thing and shifting it at will, most high indeed.

In just a few steps, he leapt into the forest.Just as he was searching about, he saw a pair of stone doors, half open and half closed, and dared not enter uninvited.:「He had no choice but to call out loudly, "Open the door!!」:「?」:「。」:「。」Open the door!" This at once startled the female demon guarding the gate, who opened the door halfway and said, "Where have you come from?" Xingzhe said, "I've been sent from Lotus Cave on Pingding Mountain to invite the Old Mother." The female demon said, "Go on in." When he reached the second gate, he peered in, craning his neck to look, and saw an old woman sitting right in the middle. You may ask, what did she look like?Behold:

When the Great Sage saw her, he dared not go in, but stood outside the second gate, screwing up his face, and began to weep bitterly. You may ask why he wept so — could it be that he was afraid of her?便Even if he had been afraid, that alone would not have made him weep — and besides, he had already tricked away her treasure and killed her little demons, so why then did he weep? There had been a time when he was thrown into the Nine Tripod Cauldrons of boiling oil and fried for seven or eight days straight, yet not a single tear had he shed.便It was only now, thinking of the hardships Tang Seng endured in seeking the scriptures, that his tears welled up from an aching heart, and he let his eyes flow freely with weeping.:「In his heart he thought, "Now that old Sun has shown off his skill by turning into a little demon to come and invite this old fiend, there's surely no way to simply stand up straight and speak to her — I'll certainly have to kowtow to her.西In all my life as a man of true mettle, I have bowed to only three: in the Western Heaven I bowed to the Buddha;at the Southern Sea I bowed to Guanyin;and at Liangjie Mountain, my master saved my life, and I bowed to him four times.使For his sake I have worn myself to pieces, wearing out liver and lungs, exhausting every last hair and pore of my heart. How much can a single scroll of scripture possibly be worth? And yet today I am made to bow to this fiend. If I do not kneel and bow, I will surely give the whole scheme away.Ah, the bitterness of it!使。」When I reckon it all up, it is only because Master is trapped in hardship that I am made to suffer this humiliation at another's hands."

:「。」:「。」:「!」:「?」:「。」:「。」At this point there was nothing else to be done, so he rushed on in, knelt down before her, and said, "Grandmother, I kowtow to you." The demoness said, "My child, rise." Xingzhe thought silently, "Good, good, good — how solidly that 'my child' rang out!" The old demoness asked, "Where have you come from?" Xingzhe said, "From Lotus Cave on Pingding Mountain. By order of the two Great Kings, I have been sent to invite you, Grandmother, to come feast on Tang Monk's flesh, and to bring the Gold-Dazzling Rope along, to capture Sun Wukong." The old demoness said, delighted, "What a filial son." And she at once called for the sedan chair to be brought out.:「?」Xingzhe thought, "My goodness, do even demons ride in sedan chairs?" From the rear chamber, two female demons at once carried out a fragrant rattan sedan chair, set it down outside the gate, and hung up green silk curtains around it.The old demoness rose and left the cave, and seated herself in the chair.Behind her came several young female demons, carrying her cosmetic case, holding up her mirror stand, bearing towels, and lifting the incense box, attending her on either side.:「The old demoness said, "Why have you all come along?I am only going to my own son's place — why should I worry there'll be no one to wait on me there, that I need you all tagging along fawning and flapping your mouths?。」Go back, all of you, and shut the doors and mind the house." So the little demons all indeed went back, leaving only the two chair-bearers.:「?」:「。」:「。」:「。」The old demoness asked, "What are the names of those who were sent to invite me?" Xingzhe hastily answered, "He is called Bashanhu, and I am called Yihailong." The old demoness said, "You two walk ahead and clear the way for me." Xingzhe thought to himself, "What rotten luck — I haven't even gotten the scriptures yet, and here I am playing the errand-boy for her." But he dared not resist, and had no choice but to go ahead and lead the way, shouting loudly to clear the path.

:「After traveling some five or six li, he sat himself down on a rocky cliff to wait for the chair-bearers to catch up. Xingzhe said, "How about we rest a while?。」My shoulders are aching something terrible." The little demons, not knowing any better, simply set the chair down to rest.Behind the chair, Xingzhe plucked a hair from his chest and turned it into a large sesame cake, which he held and gnawed on.:「?」:「The chair-bearers said, "Officer, what are you eating there?" Xingzhe said, "It's a bit embarrassing to say.。」:「。」:「?」Coming all this way to invite the Old Mother, and not given the least reward for it, my stomach got hungry, so I brought along some dry rations of my own — let me eat a bit before we go on." The chair-bearers said, "Give us some to eat too." Xingzhe laughed and said, "Come on then, we're all one family, why quibble over it?" The little demons, not knowing any better, crowded around Xingzhe to share in the rations.Xingzhe drew out his rod and gave it a sweep across their heads: one who took it straight on was beaten to a pulp;the other, only grazed, did not die but only groaned. Hearing someone groan, the old demoness stuck her head out of the chair to look, whereupon Xingzhe leapt up before the chair and struck her full on the head with one blow of his rod, smashing a hole clean through, brains splattering and fresh blood gushing out.He dragged her out of the chair to look, and found she was in fact a nine-tailed fox.:「Xingzhe laughed and said, "You wretched beast, and you dare to call yourself 'Old Mother'.。」If you call yourself Old Mother, then you ought to address old Sun here as your great-great-grandsire."

:「。」The fine Monkey King then searched her body and pulled out the Gold-Dazzling Rope, tucked it away in his sleeve, and said gleefully, "However great that vile fiend's powers may be, three of his five treasures now bear the surname Sun." He then plucked two more hairs and turned them into a Bashanhu and a Yihailong;then plucked two more and turned them into two chair-bearers;and he himself transformed into the likeness of the old demoness, and sat down inside the chair. They lifted up the chair and headed straight back the way they had come.

:「Before long, they reached the mouth of Lianhua Cave, and the little imps transformed from the hairs went ahead, calling out: 'Open the door!'!」:「?」:「。」「?」:「?」:「。」:「。」'Open the door!' Inside, the little imp guarding the gate opened it and said: 'Are Bashanhu and Yihailong here?' The hair-imp said: 'Here.' 'And the old lady you went to fetch?' The hair-imp pointed with his hand: 'Isn't that her in the sedan chair?' The little demon said: 'Wait a moment, let me go in and report first.' He reported: 'Great King, the old lady has come.' When the two demon chiefs heard this, they at once ordered an incense table set out to receive her.:「Hearing this, Xingzhe secretly rejoiced, saying: 'What luck — now it's my turn to play the part of a person.'Earlier I turned into a little imp and went to invite the old demon, and kowtowed to him once;。」this time, I've turned into the old demon's mother, and he's bound to perform the four-bow ceremony — even if it's nothing much, it should at least earn me two kowtows from him.' Splendid Great Sage — he got down from the sedan chair, shook out his clothes, and gathered the four hairs back onto his body. The little imp guarding the gate carried the empty sedan chair in through the gate.He himself followed slowly behind, all coy and mincing, swaying and simpering, just like the old demon's manner, and walked straight in.And then he saw the demons, great and small, all come kneeling to receive him.Drums and music, flutes and pipes, rang out in a single burst of sound;in the Boshan censer, fragrant smoke curled thick and misty. He went into the main hall and sat down facing south.:「。」:「。」The two demon chiefs fell to their knees, kowtowed up toward him, and called out: 'Mother, your child pays respects.' Xingzhe said: 'My child, rise.'

Now, Zhu Bajie, hanging from the beam, let out a burst of laughter.:「。」:「。」:「?」:「Sha Seng said: 'Second Brother, well now, you've laughed yourself right off the beam.' Bajie said: 'Brother, there's a reason for my laughing.' Sha Seng said: 'What reason?' Bajie said: 'We were afraid the old lady had come and we'd be steamed and eaten.'。」:「?」:「。」:「?」:「』,'But it turns out it isn't the old lady, it's an old acquaintance come again.' Sha Seng said: 'What old acquaintance?' Bajie said, laughing: 'The Protector of Horses has come.' Sha Seng said: 'How can you tell it's him?' Bajie said: 'When he bent his waist and called out "My child, rise," his monkey tail poked right up in back.'。」:「。」:「。」'I'm hung higher than you, so I could see it clearly.' Sha Seng said: 'Don't say anything for now, let's listen to what he says.' Bajie said: 'Right, right.'

:「?」:「Sun the Great Sage, seated in the middle, asked: 'My child, why have you invited me here?' The demon chief said: 'Mother, these past days your children have been remiss, and have not been able to show you filial devotion.'。」:「'This morning your foolish sons captured the Tang Monk from the Land of the East, and dared not eat him on our own, so we invited Mother here to offer him raw first, so we may steam him for Mother to eat and lengthen her life.' Xingzhe said: 'My child, as for the Tang Monk's flesh, I don't care to eat it.'。」:「。」'I hear this Zhu Bajie has very fine ears — cut them off, prepare them properly, and I'll have them with my wine.' When Bajie heard this he panicked and said: 'You plague-ridden thing, so you've come to cut off my ears — if I shout out, it won't sound good for you.'

Ai!All because of one heartfelt word from the idiot, the Monkey King's disguise was blown.:「Just then several little demons who had been patrolling the mountain, along with the imps guarding the gate, all came rushing in and reported: 'Great King, disaster!'。」'Sun Wukong has beaten the old lady to death and come here disguised as her!' When the demon chief heard this, he allowed no explanation, drew his Seven-Star Sword, and slashed straight at Xingzhe's face.滿Splendid Great Sage — with a shake of his body, the whole cave filled with red light, and he was already gone.Such skill as this was truly great fun. This was truly a case of: gathered, he takes form; scattered, he becomes vapor.

The old demon chief was so frightened that his soul flew and his spirit scattered, and the assembled demons bit their fingers and shook their heads.:「。」:「The old demon said: 'Brother, let's return the Tang Monk, Sha Seng, Bajie, the white horse, and the baggage all to Sun Wukong, and shut the gate on this trouble.' The second demon said: 'Elder Brother, what kind of talk is that?''I don't know how much effort I spent devising this scheme to capture the monks and bring them here.''Now, if we're as afraid of Sun Wukong's trickery as you are, and simply send them all back to him, that's truly what's called a man who fears the blade and dodges the sword — how could that be the conduct of a real man?''Please just sit down and don't be afraid.''I've heard you say Sun Wukong's magic powers are vast and great; though I've met him once, I've never yet tested my skill against his.''Bring my armor — let me go find him and fight three rounds.''If in three bouts he cannot defeat me, the Tang Monk will still be our food;'。」:「。」'but if in three bouts I cannot beat him, it won't be too late then to send the Tang Monk back to him.' The old demon said: 'Worthy Brother speaks rightly.' And he had the armor brought.

:「?」The demons carried out the armor, and the second demon dressed himself neatly, took up his precious sword, went out the gate, and called out: 'Sun Wukong, where have you run off to?' By this time the Great Sage was already up among the clouds; hearing his name called, he quickly turned to look, and saw it was the second demon.See how he was dressed:

:「。」:「The second demon called out loudly: 'Sun Wukong, quickly return my treasures and my mother, and I'll let you go on to fetch the scriptures with your Tang Monk.' The Great Sage could not help but curse: 'You wretched monster, you've mistaken your Grandfather Sun.'西'Hurry and return my master, my fellow disciples, the white horse, and the baggage, and see me off with some traveling money for the road west;'。」'if you let so much as half a "no" slip through your teeth, go twist yourself a rope right now, and spare your grandfather the trouble of doing it.' When the second demon heard this, he quickly rode his cloud, leapt into the air, and swung his precious sword to stab;Xingzhe drew his iron cudgel and met him head-on.The two of them fought in midair, and it was quite a battle:

The two fought some thirty rounds without either gaining the upper hand.

:「Xingzhe secretly rejoiced, thinking: 'This wretched monster can actually withstand old Monkey's iron cudgel.''I've already gotten his three treasures, so why should I keep struggling so bitterly with him in battle — wouldn't that just waste my time?'?」:「'Better to take out the gourd or the vase and bag him — how good that would be!' Then he thought again: 'No, no, that won't do.':『便。』'As the saying goes: "The thing obeys its master." What if I call his name and he doesn't answer — wouldn't that ruin the whole plan?'使。」使'I'd better use the Purple-Gold Cord to snare his head instead.' Splendid Great Sage — with one hand he wielded his cudgel to block the demon's weapon;with the other hand he took up the cord, and with a swish looped it around the demon chief.

It turned out the demon chief knew both a tightening spell and a loosening spell for the cord.If it caught someone else, he would recite the tightening spell, and they could never get free;if it caught himself, he would recite the loosening spell, so as not to harm himself.便Recognizing it as his own treasure, he at once recited the loosening spell, slackened the cord, slipped free of it, and instead flung it toward Xingzhe, and it promptly looped around the Great Sage.使」,The Great Sage was just about to use his "body-shrinking method" to slip free, when the demon recited the tightening spell, and it clamped down tight — how could he possibly get free?It slid down to below his neck, where it turned out to be a golden ring holding him fast. The demon gave the cord a yank, pulling him down, then hacked at his bald head with his precious sword seven or eight times.Xingzhe's scalp did not even so much as redden.:「The demon said: 'This monkey — your head is so hard, I won't bother hacking at you;''I'll take you back for now and beat you later.'。」:「?」'Hand back my other two treasures right now.' Xingzhe said: 'What treasures of yours have I taken, that you should ask me for them?' The demon chief searched carefully over his body, and found the gourd and the vase and pulled them both out.:「。」:「?」:「Then, leading him by the cord, he brought him into the cave and said: 'Elder Brother, I've caught him and brought him here.' The old demon said: 'Caught whom?' The second demon said: 'Sun Wukong.'。」滿:「'Come and see, come and see.' The old demon took one look, recognized him as Xingzhe, and his whole face broke into a delighted smile: 'It's him, it's him.'。」'Tie him up on a pillar with a good long rope, just for fun.' And indeed they tied Xingzhe up, while the two demon chiefs went off to the hall in back to drink wine.

The Great Sage scraped and scrabbled about at the foot of the pillar, and suddenly roused Bajie.:「。」:「The idiot, hanging from the beam, laughed and said: 'Elder Brother, ah, so much for eating those ears.' Xingzhe said: 'Idiot, are you hanging comfortably there?'。」:「'I'll get myself out right now, and I guarantee I'll save you all.' Bajie said: 'Shameless, shameless.''You can't even get yourself free, and yet you talk of saving others.'。」:「。」:「?」'Enough, enough, enough — master and disciples might as well die together here, so we can ask directions together in the underworld.' Xingzhe said: 'Don't talk nonsense, just watch me get out.' Bajie said: 'Let's see how you're going to get out.' As the Great Sage spoke with Bajie, his eyes meanwhile were fixed on the two demons. He saw that they were drinking inside, with several little demons carrying trays and cups, holding pots and pouring wine, running back and forth constantly between the two ends, so that the guard had grown somewhat lax.:「!」Seeing no one right in front of him, he worked his magic power: he slipped out his cudgel, blew a breath of magic air, and cried: 'Change!' — it at once turned into a file of pure steel;he turned the ring around his neck and, with three or five strokes of the file, filed it into two pieces. He pried open the filed gap and slipped free.He plucked out a hair and had it turn into a false body, tying it up there in his place. His true body gave a shake and turned into a little imp, standing off to the side.:「。」 :「。」Bajie, up on the beam, shouted again: 'Not good, not good — what's tied up is a fake, and the real body's the one hanging!' The old demon set down his cup and asked: 'What is that Zhu Bajie shouting about?' Xingzhe, already transformed into a little imp, stepped forward and said: 'Zhu Bajie was egging Sun Wukong on to transform himself and run off, but he wouldn't go, and he's shouting about it over there.' The second demon said: 'And here I thought Zhu Bajie was honest — turns out he's this dishonest. He deserves twenty strokes across the mouth.'

So Xingzhe went and fetched a rod to beat him.:「Bajie said: 'Hit me lightly;'。」:「'if you hit too hard, I'll shout out again — I recognize you.' Xingzhe said: 'Old Monkey's transformation was all for your sake — how could you go and give the whole thing away?'?」:「'Not one demon in this whole cave could tell it was me — how is it that you alone could tell?' Bajie said: 'Though you've changed your head and face, you haven't changed your backside — aren't those two red patches on your rump proof enough?'。」'That's how I knew it was you.' Xingzhe then went off to the back, made his way into the kitchen, wiped a hand across the bottom of a pot, smeared it black over both buttocks, and came back out front.:「。」Bajie saw him and laughed again, saying: 'Wherever that monkey went and fooled around all this while, he's come back with a black backside now.'

Xingzhe still stood there in front, meaning to steal the demon's treasures.:「。」:「。」He truly had great wit about him: he walked up into the hall, made a leg to the demon, and said: 'Great King, look — that Sun Wukong tied to the pillar keeps scraping about this way and that, and he's worn the golden cord ragged; it would be best to get a sturdier rope to replace it.' The old demon said: 'Well said.' And he at once untied the lion-and-barbarian sash from his waist and handed it to Xingzhe.Xingzhe took the sash and used it to tie up the false Xingzhe. He took off the cord he'd replaced, coiled it up, and tucked it into his sleeve. Then he plucked another hair, blew a breath of magic air on it, turned it into a fake Purple-Gold Cord, and presented it to the demon with both hands.便The demon, intent only on his wine, never bothered to look closely, and simply accepted it.This was the Great Sage working his shifting skills — a hair traded once more for the Purple-Gold Cord.

:「!」:「?」:「。」:「?」:「Having gotten hold of this treasure, he quickly turned and leapt out through the gate, resumed his true form, and shouted loudly: 'Monster!' The little imp guarding the gate asked: 'Who are you, shouting here?' Xingzhe said: 'Go in quickly and report to your wretched demon that Zhe Xingsun has arrived.' The little imp reported just as told, and the old demon was greatly astonished: 'We've caught Sun Wukong — so how can there now be a Zhe Xingsun?' The second demon said: 'Elder Brother, why be afraid of him?'。」:「。」'The treasures are all in my hands — let me take the gourd out and bag him.' The old demon said: 'Brother, be careful.' The second demon took the gourd, walked out through the mountain gate, and suddenly saw someone who looked just like Sun Wukong, only slightly shorter.:「?」:「。」:「He asked: 'Where have you come from?' Xingzhe said: 'I am Sun Wukong's brother. Hearing that you had captured my elder brother, I've come to settle the matter with you.' The second demon said: 'Yes, I caught him, and locked him in the cave.''Now that you've come, you're surely looking for a fight.'?」:「!」:「。」:「。」:「?」:「'I won't even cross weapons with you — I'll just call your name once, and see if you dare answer me.' Xingzhe said: 'Even if you called a thousand times, I'd answer you ten thousand times!' The demon took hold of his treasure, leapt into the air, turned its bottom toward the sky and its mouth toward the ground, and called out: 'Zhe Xingsun!' Xingzhe dared not answer, thinking secretly to himself: 'If I answer, I'll be bagged inside.' The demon said: 'Why don't you answer me?' Xingzhe said: 'I'm a bit deaf in the ears, I didn't hear you.'。」:「。」:「'Call louder.' The monster called out again: 'Zhe Xingsun!' Xingzhe, down below, counted on his fingers a moment and said: 'My real name is Sun Wukong; the false name I made up is Zhe Xingsun.'。」'My real name could get me bagged, but surely a made-up false name can't.' And so he could not help but answer him once. With a whoosh he was sucked into the gourd, and the seal was pasted on.It turned out that treasure did not care at all whether the name was true or false — it needed only the breath of an answer to suck someone in.

Once the Great Sage was inside the gourd, everything was pitch black.:「?」:「He pushed upward with his head, but it wouldn't budge at all, and he was packed in very tightly. Only then did he grow anxious and think: 'Back on the mountain, when I met those two little demons, they told me: whether gourd or vase, once a person is bagged inside, in no more than an hour and a half they'll dissolve into pus — could I really be dissolving?' Then with a settled mind he thought again: 'No matter, it can't dissolve me.''Five hundred years ago, when old Monkey wrought havoc in Heaven, Laozi put me in his Eight Trigrams Furnace and refined me for forty-nine days, refining me into a golden heart and liver, silver lungs and bowels, a bronze head and iron back, and fiery eyes with golden pupils — how could I possibly dissolve in a mere hour and a half?'。」'I'll just let him carry me in, and see what he does.'

:「。」:「?」:「。」:「The second demon carried it inside and said: 'Elder Brother, I've caught him.' The old demon said: 'Caught whom?' The second demon said: 'Zhe Xingsun — I've bagged him in the gourd.' The old demon said happily: 'Worthy Brother, please sit.'。」 Don't disturb it — just wait until it rattles when shaken, then peel off the seal.' Xingzhe, hearing this, thought: 'With a body like mine, how could it possibly rattle when shaken?''Only once I've melted into thin liquid would it rattle.'。」,「'Let me piss then — if it rattles when he shakes it, he's bound to peel off the seal and open the lid, and I'll seize the chance to make my getaway.' Then he thought again: 'No, no, that won't do.''Urine could indeed make a sound, but it would foul my robe.'。」'When he shakes it, I'll just gather some spittle and rinse my mouth, making a sloshing, splashing sound, to trick him into opening it, and then old Monkey will make his escape.' The Great Sage got himself ready, but the demon, absorbed in his wine, did not shake it.:「The Great Sage worked a trick, meaning only to fool him into shaking it, and suddenly cried out: 'Heavens!'。」'My ankle bones have dissolved clean away!' But the demon still did not shake it.:「The Great Sage cried out again: 'Mother!'。」:「。」'Even my hip bones have dissolved now!' The old demon said: 'Once it's dissolved up to the waist, it's all completely dissolved — peel off the seal and take a look.'

:「!」Hearing this, the Great Sage plucked out a hair and cried: 'Change!' — it turned into a half body, lying at the bottom of the gourd. His true body, meanwhile, turned into a tiny cicada-like insect and clung fixed at the rim of the gourd's mouth.Just as the second demon peeled back the seal to look inside, the Great Sage had already flown out. With a tumble, he turned himself into Yihailong.Yihailong was, of course, the very little demon who had originally gone to fetch the old lady; having transformed into him, he stood off to one side.:「。」The old demon tilted the mouth of the gourd and took a peek, and seeing a half body still moving about, without checking whether it was real or false, hastily cried: 'Brother, cover it, cover it — it hasn't finished dissolving yet!' The second demon pasted the seal back on as before.:「。」The Great Sage, standing off to the side, laughed inwardly, thinking: 'Little do you know old Monkey is already right here.'

:「?」:「。」The old demon took up the pot, poured a cup brimming full of wine, and came forward to offer it to the second demon with both hands, saying: 'Worthy Brother, let me offer you a cup.' The second demon said: 'Elder Brother, we've already been drinking this good while — why offer another cup now?' The old demon said: 'Your catching the Tang Monk, Bajie, and Sha Seng was already something, but now you've also snared Sun Wukong and bagged Zhe Xingsun as well — with such merit as this, you deserve several more cups from me.' Seeing his elder brother's courtesy, how could the second demon dare not accept? But with one hand holding the gourd, he did not dare reach out with it to take the cup, so he handed the gourd to Yihailong, and used both hands to take the cup.Little did he know that this Yihailong was none other than Sun Wukong transformed.Watch him carry the gourd, waiting on him with such attentive care. The Second Demon King took the cup and drank, and wished to return the toast with a cup of his own.:「。」The Old Demon King said, "No need to return the toast — let me pour you one here instead." The two of them went on deferring to each other.Wukong held the gourd atop his head, his eyes never wavering, watching the two of them pass the cup back and forth without a thought to spare, and then slipped the gourd into his sleeve. He plucked a hair and transformed it into a fake gourd, identical in every way, and held it in his hands. That demon, after passing the wine around for a while, did not even look to see if it was real or false, and took hold of the treasure. Each returned to his seat and sat down at ease, drinking on as before.:「。」The Great Sage Sun slipped away, having gotten hold of the treasure, and thought to himself with secret delight, "However clever this demon king may be, in the end the gourd still bears the surname Sun."

What was to happen afterward, and how he would manage to save his master and destroy the demons, is not yet known — listen to the explanation in the next chapter.

What it’s about

Wukong, in a rapid string of disguises, intercepts the old demon-mother summoned to help eat Tripitaka and takes her shape, then works his way into the cave posing now as a demon, now as a kinsman, to lay hands on the gourd and the vase. Challenged to a naming contest, he answers to false names so the treasures cannot swallow him, and slips a counterfeit gourd into the demons' keeping.

The tricks nearly unravel, for the demons are shrewd and test him again and again, and at one point he is himself sucked into a treasure and must talk and shape-shift his way out before he melts. By the chapter's end he has turned the demons' own confidence against them, and the balance of the whole contest has quietly passed from the two kings to the disguised Monkey King in their midst.

When it was written 背景

This 回 is nearly pure trickster comedy, a sustained infiltration in which Wukong's seventy-two transformations matter far more than his cudgel. It rewards close reading for the play of names, counterfeits and mistaken identities that drives it forward. Learners should track which treasure is in whose hands at each turn, since the whole arc is a shell game, and should appreciate that the novel is as interested in cleverness as in combat whenever it lets an episode run this long.
