The Demon Kings Capture Tang Sanzang with Their Magic Treasures

033Chapter 33

:「。」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「Now to tell of the fiend who carried Bajie into the cave, saying, "Elder brother, I've brought one back." The Old Fiend said happily, "Bring him here for me to see." The Second Fiend said, "Isn't this him?" The Old Fiend said, "Brother, you've caught the wrong one — this monk is useless." Bajie at once seized the chance to speak up, saying, "Great King, since I'm a useless monk, let me go.。」:「That wouldn't be decent of you." The Second Fiend said, "Elder brother, don't let him go.Although he's useless, he's still one of Tang Seng's company — he's called Zhu Bajie. :「。」Soak him for now in the clear-water pond out back, soak off his bristly coat, salt him down, and dry him in the sun, to have as a relish with wine on an overcast day." Hearing this, Bajie said, "What rotten luck — I've run into a fiend in the salted-meat trade." The little demons carried Bajie inside and tossed him into the water; we'll leave that there for now.

:「?」:「。」:「?」:「Now to tell of Sanzang, who sat before the slope, his ears burning and his eyes twitching, ill at ease in body, and called out, "Wukong, why has Wuneng been gone so long scouting the mountain this time, without coming back?" The Pilgrim said, "Master, you still don't understand his mind." Sanzang said, "What's on his mind?" The Pilgrim said, "Master, if there really were a monster on this mountain, he wouldn't be able to go half a step further — he'd surely make a great bluster and come running back to report to me.。」:「I suspect there's no monster, the road is peaceful, and he's simply gone straight on." Sanzang said, "But if he's really gone on ahead, where shall we meet up with him?。」:「This is open wild mountain country, not to be compared with towns and marketplaces." The Pilgrim said, "Master, don't worry, please mount up.That fool is somewhat lazy, and is certain to be walking slowly.。」Urge the horse on a bit, and we'll surely catch up with him, then go on together." Sure enough, Tang Seng mounted the horse, Sha Seng shouldered the pole, and the Pilgrim led the way up the mountain.

:「Now to tell of the Old Fiend, who called to the Second Fiend again, saying, "Brother, since you've caught Bajie, Tang Seng must certainly be near as well.。」:「。」Go patrol the mountain again, and whatever you do don't let him slip past." The Second Fiend said, "At once, at once." Just watch him hastily muster fifty little demons and go up the mountain to patrol.:「。」:「?」:「Just as they were walking along, they saw auspicious clouds drifting and lucky vapors coiling above, and the Second Fiend said, "Tang Seng is coming." The demons said, "Where is Tang Seng?" The Second Fiend said, "Over a good man's head, auspicious clouds shine down upon his crown; over an evil man's head, black vapors soar to the sky.。」That Tang Seng was originally the elder Golden Cicada come down to the mortal world, a good man who has cultivated through ten lifetimes, and that is why these auspicious clouds appear." None of the demons could see them.:「?」The Second Fiend pointed with his hand and said, "Isn't that him?" and at that very moment Sanzang, on his horse, gave a shiver;he pointed again, and Sanzang shivered again. He pointed three times in a row, and Sanzang shivered three times in a row.:「?」:「。」:「Uneasy in mind and spirit, Sanzang said, "Disciples, why do I keep shivering?" Sha Seng said, "Shivering like that is probably a bout of indigestion coming on." The Pilgrim said, "Nonsense — Master is walking through these deep mountains and lofty ridges, and is naturally on edge and easily startled.。」Don't be afraid, don't be afraid; let old Monkey clear a path ahead with his staff to settle your nerves."

Splendid Pilgrim — he raised his staff and, in front of the horse, ran through several sets of movements, three high and four low, five to the left and six to the right, all in accordance with the Six Secret Teachings and Three Strategies, displaying his divine powers. The elder, watching from his horse, thought it truly something rarely seen within the world, unmatched anywhere on earth. He cleaved the road open and pressed straight ahead, very nearly frightening that monster to death.:「。」:「Watching from the mountaintop, his soul flew and his spirit scattered, and he suddenly blurted out, "For years I have heard talk of Sun Wukong the Pilgrim — only today do I know the tales were no exaggeration, and it's all true." The demons came forward and said, "Great King, why do you build up another's resolve and destroy your own prestige??」:「。」:「?」:「Who are you praising?" The Second Fiend said, "Sun Wukong's divine powers are vast — there's no eating that Tang Seng with him around." The demons said, "Great King, if you have no skill for it, let a few of us go report to the Great King, and have him muster all the troops of the cave, great and small, and form battle lines; with everyone's strength joined as one, why should we fear he'll get away?" The Second Fiend said, "You haven't seen that iron staff of his — its might is such that ten thousand men could not withstand it.?」:「Our cave has no more than four or five hundred soldiers — how could they withstand a single blow of that staff?" The demons said, "If that's so, and Tang Seng can't be eaten, then wasn't it a mistake to have caught Zhu Bajie?。」 We ought to send him back now." The Second Fiend said, "Catching him wasn't a mistake exactly, but sending him back isn't something to be done lightly either.。」:「?」:「Tang Seng is still to be eaten in the end, it's only that it cannot be done just now." The demons said, "If that's so, must we wait several more years?" The Second Fiend said, "It won't even take that long.As I see it, that Tang Seng can only be schemed for by gentle means, not seized by force. If we try to rely on force to catch him, we won't even get so much as a sniff of him.。」:「?」:「We can only move him with kindness, win him over until his heart is in accord with mine, and then, within that kindness, work out a scheme by which he can be taken." The demons said, "Great King, if you have settled on a plan to catch him, will you have need of us?" The Second Fiend said, "All of you go back to your own posts, but you must not report this to the Great King;if it alarms him, word is bound to leak out and ruin my scheme.。」I have powers of transformation of my own with which I can catch him." The demons scattered and left.

He alone leapt down the mountain, and there by the roadside shook himself and transformed into an old Daoist priest.Just what did he look like, dressed up so?Behold him:

:「There by the highway he disguised himself as a Daoist priest who had broken his leg in a fall, his foot dripping with blood, moaning from his mouth, and crying out only, "Help! Someone save me!!」Save me!"

Now to tell of Sanzang, who, relying on the Great Sage Sun and Sha Seng, was coming along happily.:「!」:「Just as they were traveling along, he heard someone calling, "Master, save me!" Hearing this, Sanzang said, "Merciful Buddha!Merciful Buddha! In this open wilderness of mountains, with no village or house anywhere around, who could be calling out?。」駿:「It must be someone frightened half to death by a tiger, leopard, wolf, or serpent." The elder reined his fine steed around and called out, "Whoever is in trouble there, who are you?。」Come on out." The fiend crawled out from among the weeds and, before the elder's horse, kept knocking his head to the ground with loud thuds.Seeing from his horse that this was a Daoist priest, and an elderly one at that, Sanzang felt very much moved with pity.:「。」:「。」He hurriedly dismounted and helped him up, saying, "Please rise, please rise." The fiend said, "It hurts, it hurts, it hurts." Letting go of his hand and looking, he saw blood flowing from his foot.:「Startled, Sanzang asked, "Sir, where have you come from??」:「西。」:「?」:「How did you come to injure your foot?" The fiend, with glib and flowery words, false in feeling and deceitful in intent, said, "Master, west of this mountain there is a secluded Daoist temple, and I am a priest of that temple." Sanzang said, "Why are you not in your temple tending the incense fires and practicing the scriptures and rites, but wandering idly here instead?" The fiend said, "The day before yesterday a patron south of the mountain invited the priests to hold a star-placating rite for blessings, and we stayed late; my disciple and I were traveling back together along the road.As we walked along the deep road, we suddenly encountered a striped fierce tiger, which seized my disciple in its jaws and carried him off. This poor priest, trembling with fear and unable to run, fell upon a slope of jumbled rocks, injuring my leg and foot, and lost my way back.Today, by great good fortune from Heaven, I have had the good luck to meet you, Master.I beg you with all my heart, Master, to show great mercy and save my life.。」:「If I can only get back to the temple, I would pawn my very body and sell my life in gratitude, and would surely repay this great kindness richly." Hearing this, Sanzang took it to be true and said, "Sir, you and I are both lives under Heaven alike; I am a monk and you a Daoist — though our robes and caps differ, the principle of cultivation is the same.If I did not save you, I would not be worthy of having left the household life.便。」:「?」I will save you, then, but you cannot walk." The fiend said, "I cannot even stand up, so how could I possibly walk?"

:「。」:「。」:「。」:「。」:「。」:「。」:「。」:「。」Sanzang said, "Very well, very well — I can still walk myself; let me lend you my horse to ride for a stretch, and when we reach your temple, you can return the horse to me." The fiend said, "Master, I am deeply grateful for your kindness, but my leg and hip are injured from the fall, and I cannot ride a horse." Sanzang said, "True indeed." He called to Brother Sha, "Strap the luggage onto my horse, and you carry him on your back for a stretch." Sha Seng said, "I'll carry him." The fiend hastily turned his head, shot him a glance, and said, "Master, I was so frightened by that fierce tiger that seeing this master with the unlucky-looking dark face only frightens me all the more — I dare not have him carry me." Sanzang called out, "Wukong, you carry him then." The Pilgrim answered at once, again and again, "I'll carry him, I'll carry him." The demon then fixed his attention on the Pilgrim, compliantly wanting him to be the one to carry him, and said nothing more.:「Sha Seng laughed and said, "This old Daoist has no sense at all.He won't have me carry him, but insists on being carried by him instead.。」If he can't see straight, Master, on some sharp three-cornered rock he'll get every sinew in his body smashed to bits."

:「Hearing this, the Pilgrim laughed and said, "You wretched fiend, how dare you come and provoke me?Why don't you go ask around how many years old old Monkey is?This ghost-talk of yours might fool Tang Seng, but do you think it can fool me too?I recognize you for the monster of this mountain — you must mean to eat my master. My master is no ordinary person — do you think he's something for you to eat?。」:「If you want to eat him, you'll have to share more than half with old Monkey." Hearing the Pilgrim muttering all this, the fiend said, "Master, I am the son of a good family who became a Daoist priest.。」:「?」:「!『。』 :「Today I had the misfortune to run into disaster from a tiger — I am not a monster." The Pilgrim said, "If you were so afraid of tigers and wolves, why didn't you recite the Northern Dipper Sutra?" Sanzang, who was just then mounting his horse, heard this and scolded, "You wretched ape! 'To save one life is better than building a seven-tiered pagoda.' Just carry him and be done with it — why go on about the 'Northern Dipper Sutra' and 'Southern Dipper Sutra'?" Hearing this, the Pilgrim said to himself, "This fellow is in luck. My master is a compassionate, kindly man, though outwardly gentle he is a bit rough and thorny underneath. If I refuse to carry you, he'll blame me for it.便便Carry you I will then, but let's get things clear beforehand: if you need to relieve yourself, tell me first;漿。」:「?」西if it drips down my back, the stink would be unbearable, and it would foul my clothes besides, with no one to wash them." The fiend said, "At my age, how could I not understand what you mean?" Only then did the Pilgrim haul him up and hoist him onto his back, and together with the elder and Sha Seng he set off west along the main road.On the uneven, hilly parts of the mountain, the Pilgrim walked slowly and carefully, letting Tang Seng go on ahead.

:「They had not gone more than three or five li when Master and Sha Seng descended into a hollow of the mountain and passed out of the Pilgrim's sight; in his heart he grumbled, "Master is getting on in years, and still doesn't understand how things work.On such a long road, even carrying nothing at all would already feel burdensome enough that I'd rather fling it down, and yet he has me carry this monster on top of it.Never mind that he's a monster — even if he were a good man, at his age he'd be about ready to die anyway.?」Let me just smash him to death — why bother carrying him?" Just as the Great Sage was scheming to dash him down, it turned out the fiend already knew his intent, and moreover he knew how to summon mountains.使He at once employed the magic of "Moving Mountains and Overturning Seas," and right there on the Pilgrim's back formed a magic sign with his fingers and recited a true spell, summoning Mount Sumeru into the air to come crashing down on the Pilgrim's head.:「使In alarm the Great Sage tilted his head aside, so that it landed pressing on his left shoulder and arm, and laughed, saying, "My child, what body-weighting trick are you using to press down on old Monkey?。」:「。」This one I'm not even afraid of — it's only that a load carried straight is easy to bear, but a load carried lopsided is hard to endure." The fiend thought, "One mountain isn't enough to hold him down," and so recited another spell, summoning Mount Emei into the air to press down on him as well. The Pilgrim again tilted his head aside, so that it landed pressing on his right shoulder and arm.See him now, shouldering two great mountains, dashing along like a shooting star to catch up with his master.:「。」Seeing this, the demon chief was so alarmed that sweat broke out all over his body, and he thought, "So he really can carry mountains." He steeled himself again, recited the true spell, and summoned Mount Tai into the air, bringing it down squarely on the Pilgrim's head to pin him down. The Great Sage's strength went slack and his sinews went numb; caught by this technique of Mount Tai pressing down on the crown, he was pressed until the Three Corpse spirits within him cried out and blood spurted from his seven orifices.

The wicked fiend, having used his powers to press the Pilgrim down, swiftly rode a long gust of wind to chase after Tang Sanzang, and from amid the clouds reached down a hand to snatch him right off the horse. In alarm Sha Seng dropped the luggage, drew out his demon-quelling staff, and blocked the attack head-on.The fiend raised a seven-star sword and came at him face to face. What a fine battle this was:

The fiend was fierce beyond measure, wielding his precious sword with moves swift as shooting stars, and he battered Sha Seng until his strength gave way and he could no longer hold out, so that he turned to flee. But he was already pinned down, his precious staff pressed back, and the fiend swung his great hand round, seized Sha Seng, and tucked him under his left arm;with his right hand he snatched Sanzang off the horse, hooked the luggage with the tip of his toe, and opened his mouth to bite hold of the horse's mane;使:「then, using a spell of capture, he swept all of them away in a single gust of wind, carrying them all to the Lotus Cave, and called out loudly in a stern voice, "Brother!。」I've brought all the monks!"

:「。」:「?」:「。」:「。」:「便Hearing this, the Old Fiend was overjoyed and said, "Bring them here for me to see." The Second Fiend said, "Isn't this them?" The Old Fiend said, "Good brother, you've caught the wrong ones again." The Second Fiend said, "You told me to catch Tang Seng." The Old Fiend said, "Tang Seng it is indeed, but you still haven't caught that Sun Wukong with all his skill. He must be caught before it will be safe to eat Tang Seng;if he hasn't yet been caught, we must on no account touch his master. That Monkey King has vast divine powers and many transformations — if we were to eat his master, would he ever accept that quietly?。」:「He'd come make a ruckus right at our gate, and we'd never know a moment's peace again." The Second Fiend laughed and said, "Brother, you really do know how to build others up.To hear you praise him, he's something rare even in Heaven and unmatched anywhere on earth;。」:「?」:「but as I see it, he's nothing so special after all, no great skill to speak of." The Old Fiend said, "Have you caught him, then?" The Second Fiend said, "I have already summoned three great mountains to press him down beneath them — he cannot budge so much as an inch.。」滿:「That's why I was able to snatch Tang Seng and Brother Sha, along with the horse and the luggage, and bring them all here." Hearing this, the Old Fiend was filled with joy and said, "What luck, what luck.。」:「。」:「。」西Once that fellow is caught, then Tang Seng will truly be food in our mouths." He called to the little demons, "Quickly prepare wine, and offer the Second Great King a cup in honor of his achievement." The Second Fiend said, "Brother, let's not drink wine yet — have the little ones fish Zhu Bajie up out of the water and string him up." So they hung Bajie up in the east corridor, hung Sha Seng in the west, hung Tang Seng in the middle, sent the white horse to the trough, and took the luggage inside.

:「The Old Fiend laughed and said, "Good brother, what fine skill — in two turns you've caught three monks.。」:「But although Sun Wukong is pinned down under a mountain, we still need to work some scheme to bring him in to complete the set for steaming, before it will really do." The Second Fiend said, "Elder brother, please sit.。」:「?」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「:『。』。」If we want to catch Sun Wukong, there's no need for us to go ourselves — just send two little demons with two treasures, and they can bag him and bring him in." The Old Fiend said, "What treasures shall they take?" The Second Fiend said, "Take my Purple-Gold Red Gourd, and your Mutton-Fat Jade Vase." The Old Fiend brought out the treasures and said, "Which two shall be sent?" The Second Fiend said, "Send Sharp-Eyed Ghost and Clever Bug." He instructed them, "The two of you take these treasures straight to the very summit of the highest peak, turn the bottom toward the sky and the mouth toward the ground, and call out once, 'Sun Wukong!' If he answers, he will already be sealed inside; then at once paste on the slip that reads 'By command of the Most High Lord Lao, in accordance with the statutes, at once, at once,' and within an hour or two he will melt into pus." The two little demons kowtowed, took the treasures, and went out to catch the Pilgrim; we need not tell of that further here.

Now to tell of the Great Sage, pinned down at the foot of the mountain by the fiend's magic — in his suffering he thought of Sanzang, and in his misfortune he called to mind the holy monk.:「He cried out in a piercing voice, "Master! To think that when you came to Liangjie Mountain and tore off the seal, old Monkey escaped that great calamity and took up the teachings of the Buddhist faith.Grateful for the Bodhisattva's bestowal of her sacred decree, you and I have dwelt together and cultivated together, shared the same karmic bond and the same outward form, the same views and the same understanding.Yet who would have thought that on reaching this place, I would run into a demon's obstruction and be pinned down again beneath a mountain he summoned. How pitiful, how pitiful! If you should die it would only be your due, but it would be hard on Sha Seng and Bajie, and on that little dragon who transformed himself into a horse, all for nothing.。」This is truly a case of: a big tree invites the wind, and the wind shakes the tree; a man rises to fame, and fame brings a man down." Having sighed this out, his tears fell like rain.

:「?」:「。」「?」:「。」:「This soon alarmed the Mountain God, the Local Deity, and the Guardians of the Five Directions, who gathered together; the Golden-Headed Guardian said, "Whose mountain is this?" The Local Deity said, "It is ours." "Then who is it that lies pinned beneath your mountain?" The Local Deity said, "We don't know who it is." The Guardian said, "So you really don't know. The one pinned here is Sun Wukong, the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, the Pilgrim who threw Heaven into a great uproar five hundred years ago.Now he has taken refuge and is bound for the fruits of righteousness, having become a disciple following Tang Seng. How could you lend your mountain to a fiend for pinning him down? You are as good as dead — if he ever gets free one day, do you think he'll spare you?。」:「Even if judged leniently, the Local Deity would be sentenced to relay-station duty, and the Mountain God banished to the army, and we ourselves would be charged with grave negligence." Only then did the Mountain God and the Local Deity grow afraid and say, "We truly did not know, did not know.We only heard the demon chief recite the mountain-summoning spell, and so we moved the mountain here.?」:「Who could have known it was the Great Sage Sun?" The Guardian said, "Well, don't be afraid for now.:『。』。」:「?」:「The statutes say, 'One who did not know commits no crime.' Let me work something out with you — we'll release him, but see that he doesn't lay hands on us and beat us." The Local Deity said, "That wouldn't make sense — release him and still get beaten?" The Guardian said, "You don't understand. He has a gold-banded rod that answers his every wish, and it is fearsome indeed: whatever it strikes dies, whatever it grazes is injured;。」one knock and the sinews snap, one scrape and the skin caves in."

:「。」:「?」:「。」:「。」:「!」The Local Deity and Mountain God, hearts full of dread, took counsel with the Guardians of the Five Directions, and then came before the gate of the three mountains and called out, "Great Sage, the Mountain God, the Local Deity, and the Guardians of the Five Directions have come to see you." Splendid Pilgrim — though the tiger was thin, his heroic spirit remained, and his bearing was naturally lofty, his voice ringing out clear as he said, "What do you want, seeing me?" The Local Deity said, "We report to the Great Sage: we will send the mountain away and beg the Great Sage to come forth, and pardon us lesser spirits our offense of disrespect." The Pilgrim said, "Send the mountain away, and I won't beat you." He gave a shout, "Rise!" — just like a magistrate handing down a ruling — and the assembled spirits recited their true spell, sending the mountain back to its original place, and freeing the Pilgrim.:「。」:「?」:「?」:「。」Xingzhe jumped up, shook the dust off himself, tightened his skirt, and pulled his staff out from behind his ear, calling to the mountain god and the local deity: "Stretch your ankles over here — let me strike each of you twice first, just to relieve old Monkey's boredom." The gods were greatly alarmed: "Just now the Great Sage already pardoned our offense — why is it that the moment you come out, your words change and you want to beat us?" Xingzhe said: "Good local deity, good mountain god — you say you're not afraid of old Monkey, but you're afraid of the demon instead?" The local deity said: "That demon has vast magic power and superior sorcery; he recites true spells and incantations to summon us into his cave, one of us taking turns on duty each day."

Hearing the words "on duty," Xingzhe too felt a stir of alarm in his heart.:「Facing upward toward the sky, he cried out loudly: "Heaven, Heaven!Ever since chaos first divided and heaven and earth opened apart, Flower-Fruit Mountain gave birth to me; I too once visited enlightened masters far and wide, who transmitted to me the secret of eternal life.使Think how I, following the wind in transformation, subduing tigers and dragons, greatly disturbing the Palace of Heaven, was named the Great Sage — never once did I use my power to make servants of mountain gods or local deities.Today this outrageous demon — how dare he call mountain god and local deity his slaves, making them take turns on duty for him?Heaven!?」Since old Monkey was born, why must such a creature as this also be born?"

Just as the Great Sage was sighing in this manner, he saw radiant light blazing forth from within the mountain hollow.:「?」:「。」:「Xingzhe said: "Mountain god, local deity — since you're on duty in this cave, what is that object giving off light?" The local deity said: "That's the glow from the demon's treasure; it must be that some spirit is bringing a treasure to try to subdue you." Xingzhe said: "Now this will be good sport.?」:「。」:「Let me ask you — who comes and goes with him in this cave?" The local deity said: "What he loves is refining cinnabar and concocting elixirs; what delights him are Complete-Perfection Daoist priests." Xingzhe said: "No wonder he transformed into an old Daoist priest and tricked my master away.Since that's how things stand, you still owe me your beating — go on back now.。」Let old Monkey capture him himself." With that, all the gods soared into the sky and scattered.

The Great Sage shook himself and transformed into an old Perfected Immortal.Do you wish to know how he was dressed?

Before long, the two little demons arrived.Xingzhe stretched out his gold-banded staff; the demon, not expecting it, tripped over his foot and fell flat with a thud.:「Climbing back up, he finally saw it was Xingzhe and shouted: "How careless, how careless!。」:「If it weren't that our Great King holds you traveling clergy in respect, I'd settle accounts with you." Xingzhe said with a fawning smile: "Settle what?。」:「?」:「。」:「When one Daoist meets another, we're all one family." The demon said: "Then why were you lying here to trip me up?" Xingzhe said: "Little Daoist lad, seeing you, this old Daoist wanted to take a tumble as a first-meeting gift." The demon said: "Our Great King's first-meeting gift is only a few taels of silver — why would you take a tumble as a first-meeting gift?。」:「。」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「You must be some stray wind from elsewhere — you're surely no Daoist priest from around here." Xingzhe said: "Indeed I'm not; I come from Penglai Mountain." The demon said: "Penglai Mountain is the realm of immortals on the sea isles." Xingzhe said: "If I'm not an immortal, then who is?" The demon turned his anger to delight, stepped forward and said: "Old Immortal, Old Immortal — we with our mortal eyes and common flesh failed to recognize you; our words gave offense, please don't take it amiss, don't take it amiss." Xingzhe said: "I take no offense.:『。』As the saying goes: 'An immortal's body never sets foot on mortal ground.' How would you know of it?Today I've come to your mountain because I wish to lead a fine person across into immortality and the attainment of the Way.?」:「。」:「。」Which of you is willing to follow me?" Jingxi Gui said: "Master, I'll follow you." Lingli Chong said: "Master, I'll follow you."

:「?」:「。」「?」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「?」:「Xingzhe, knowing full well, asked anyway: "Where have you two come from?" The demon said: "From Lotus-Flower Cave." "Where are you bound?" The demon said: "By order of our Great King, to capture Sun Xingzhe." Xingzhe said: "Capture whom?" The demon said again: "Capture Sun Xingzhe." Sun Xingzhe said: "Could that be the Sun Xingzhe who escorts Tang Seng to fetch the scriptures?" The demon said: "Exactly, exactly.?」:「Do you know him too?" Xingzhe said: "That monkey is rather ill-mannered.I know him, and I bear him something of a grudge myself.。」:「Let me go along with you to catch him — it will count as lending you help." The demon said: "Master, there's no need for your help.。」:「?」:「。」:「?」:「Our Second Great King has some sorcery; he sent three mountains down to press him underneath so he can't move an inch, and sent the two of us to bring treasures to bag him." Xingzhe said: "What treasures are they?" Jingxi Gui said: "Mine is the red gourd; his is the jade vase." Xingzhe said: "How do you bag him with them?" The little demon said: "You turn the bottom of the treasure up toward the sky and the mouth down toward the ground, call his name once, and if he answers, he's bagged inside;。」:「then you paste on a slip that reads 'By Decree of Taishang Laojun, Urgent as Law,' and within the space of an hour and a half he'll dissolve into pus." Hearing this, Xingzhe was secretly startled at heart: "Formidable, formidable!Earlier the Day-Duty Officer reported that there were five treasures — these make two of them. I wonder what the other three might be?" Xingzhe said with a smile: "You two, lend me your treasures for a look." The little demons, having no notion of the trick behind it, drew the two treasures from their sleeves and handed them to Xingzhe with both hands.:「西西Seeing them, Xingzhe secretly rejoiced: "Fine things, fine things.。」:「If I just gave my tail a flick and darted off in a whoosh, it would be as good as their giving these to old Monkey." But then he thought again: "No good, no good.便Snatching them would be easy enough, but it would ruin old Monkey's good name.。」:「。」:「This would be called broad-daylight robbery." So he handed them back, saying: "You still haven't seen my treasure yet." The demon said: "Master, what treasure do you have?。」Lend it to us mortals too, so we may look it over and ward off calamity."

:「!」:「?」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「Good Xingzhe reached down, plucked a hair from his tail, twirled it, and shouted "Change!" — it at once became a large purple-gold red gourd a foot and seven inches long; he drew it out from his waist and said: "Do you see my gourd?" Lingli Chong took it in hand, examined it, and said: "Master, this gourd of yours is big and long and cuts a fine figure, but it's simply not much use." Xingzhe said: "How is it not useful?" The demon said: "These two treasures of ours can each hold a thousand people." Xingzhe said: "What's so remarkable about holding people?。」:「?」:「。」:「My gourd can hold even Heaven itself inside it." The demon said: "It can even hold Heaven?" Xingzhe said: "Truly, it can hold Heaven." The demon said: "I fear that's a lie — only if you truly bag Heaven for us to see will we believe it;。」:「。」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「。」otherwise, we won't believe you at all." Xingzhe said: "If Heaven angers me, within a single month I often bag it seven or eight times over; if it doesn't anger me, then even in half a year I won't bag it once." Lingli Chong said: "Brother, a treasure that bags Heaven — let's trade him for it." Jingxi Gui said: "He can bag Heaven — why would he want to trade for one that only bags people?" Lingli Chong said: "If he won't agree, then let's throw in this vase as well." Xingzhe secretly rejoiced at heart: "Gourd for gourd, and a vase thrown in besides — one item traded for two, that's quite a fair bargain indeed." He stepped forward at once and took hold of Lingli Chong: "Will you trade for the one that bags Heaven?" The demon said: "As long as it truly bags Heaven, we'll trade — if we don't, may I be your son." Xingzhe said: "Very well, very well, I'll bag it for you to see."

Good Great Sage — he bowed his head, formed a mudra, and recited a spell, summoning the Day-Patrol God, the Night-Patrol God, and the Five-Direction Revealing-Truth Gods: "Go at once and memorialize the Jade Emperor on my behalf, saying that old Monkey has taken refuge in the true fruit of enlightenment and is escorting Tang Seng to the Western Heaven to fetch scriptures; the road is barred by a high mountain, and my master has met with bitter hardship. The demon has a treasure, and I wish to lure him into trading it away. With ten thousand bows I beg: lend Heaven to old Monkey to bag and shut away for half an hour, to help bring this to success — and if there is even half a syllable of refusal, I will go straight to the Hall of Miraculous Mist and take up arms."

The Day-Patrol God went straight to the South Heavenly Gate, down to the Hall of Miraculous Mist, and memorialized the Jade Emperor, relating the whole matter in full.:「The Jade Emperor said: "That reckless monkey, speaking such outrageous words.Earlier Guanyin came and asked that he be released to protect Tang Seng, and I dispatched the Five-Direction Revealing-Truth Gods and the Four Duty Officers here to take turns guarding him.?」:「。」:「?」:「Now he wants to borrow Heaven itself to bag — can Heaven be bagged?" Just as he was saying it could not be done, out from the ranks stepped Third Prince Nezha, who memorialized: "Your Majesty, Heaven can indeed be bagged." The Jade Emperor said: "How can Heaven be bagged?" Nezha said: "Since chaos first divided, the light and pure became Heaven, and the heavy and turbid became Earth.Heaven is a mass of pure vapor upholding the halls of the Jasper Palace; by rights, it is truly hard to bag;西。」:「?」:「but since Sun Xingzhe is escorting Tang Seng west to fetch scriptures — truly what is called good fortune as deep as Mount Tai, blessings as vast as the sea — today we ought to help him succeed." The Jade Emperor said: "What help do you propose, Worthy Minister?" Nezha said: "Grant your decree that I go to the North Heavenly Gate and borrow the Black Eagle Banner from Zhenwu, and unfurl it above the South Heavenly Gate, to shut away the sun, moon, and stars.。」:「。」With no one able to see another face to face, and white indistinguishable from black, we shall deceive that demon into believing Heaven has truly been bagged, and so help Xingzhe to succeed." Hearing this, the Jade Emperor said: "Let it be done as the Worthy Minister has memorialized." The prince, receiving the decree, went to the North Heavenly Gate, saw Zhenwu, and related the whole matter in full. That Patriarch at once handed the banner over to the prince.

:「。」Already a patrol god had hastened down to the Great Sage's ear and said: "Prince Nezha has come to help you succeed." Xingzhe looked up to see auspicious clouds coiling and swirling about — sure enough, there were gods present.:「。」 He then turned back to the little demons and said: "Let's bag Heaven now." The little demon said: "If you're going to bag it, just bag it — why all this shilly-shallying?" Xingzhe said: "I was just now channeling my spirit and reciting the incantation." The little demons both stared wide-eyed, watching to see how he would go about bagging Heaven.Xingzhe then tossed a fake gourd up into the air.Just think — this was made from a single hair; how much could it possibly weigh? It was blown away by the wind atop the mountain peak, drifting and floating for a full half hour before it finally came down.Just then, above the South Heavenly Gate, Prince Nezha snapped open the black banner with a flutter, and covered the sun, moon, and stars entirely. It was truly as if heaven and earth had been steeped in ink, and the whole universe dyed in indigo.:「?」:「?」「?」:「?」:「?」:「?」:「The two little demons were greatly startled: "Just now when we were speaking, it was still about noon — how has it turned to dusk already?" Xingzhe said: "Now that Heaven's been bagged, there's no telling the time — how could it not be dusk?" "Then why is it so dark as this?" Xingzhe said: "The sun, moon, and stars are all bagged away inside; outside there's no light left — how could it not be dark?" The little demon said: "Master, where are you speaking from?" Xingzhe said: "Am I not right in front of you?" The little demon reached out and felt around, saying: "I can only hear your voice, I can't see your face at all.?」:「。」:「Master, what place is this?" Xingzhe went on deceiving him: "Don't move your feet — this is the shore of the Bohai Sea; if you lose your footing and fall, it would take seven or eight days before you reached bottom." The little demon was greatly alarmed: "Enough, enough, enough — release Heaven, we understand now how it's bagged.。」If we fool around any longer, we'll fall into the sea and never get home."

Good Xingzhe — seeing that they truly believed it now, he recited the spell once more, signaling the prince, who rolled up the banner, and at once the sunlight stood again at high noon.:「The little demon laughed: "Marvelous!Marvelous!。」Such a fine treasure as this — if we don't trade for it, we'd truly be unworthy sons, no good at providing for our house." Then Jingxi Gui handed over the gourd, and Lingli Chong took out the vase, and together they passed them to Xingzhe.Xingzhe in turn handed the fake gourd to the little demons in exchange.Having completed the trade for the treasures, he went one step further to seal the matter thoroughly: he plucked a hair from below his navel, blew a breath of immortal breath on it, and turned it into a copper coin.:「。」:「?」:「He called out: "Little lad, take this coin and go buy a sheet of paper." The little demon said: "What for?" Xingzhe said: "I'll draw up a contract with you.便。」:「You've traded these two treasures that bag people for this one treasure of mine that bags Heaven — I fear that hearts may not stay content, and that as the days and years pass there might be some regret and inconvenience, so I'll write this up, each of us keeping a copy as proof." The little demon said: "There's no brush or ink here — what document could we write?。」:「?」:「。」:「Let's just swear an oath instead." Xingzhe said: "How shall we swear it?" The little demon said: "We've traded our two treasures that bag people for your one treasure that bags Heaven — if either side goes back on it, may we suffer plague all four seasons of the year." Xingzhe laughed: "I will certainly never go back on it;。」and if I do, let the same plague fall on me all four seasons, just as on you."

Having sworn the oath, he sprang up with a leap of his body, gave his tail a flick, and jumped down before the South Heavenly Gate, where he thanked Prince Nezha for the merit of waving the banner to help him.The prince returned to the palace to report the completion of his mission, and returned the banner to Zhenwu — no more need be said of that.Xingzhe stood still there amid the clouds of the heavens, watching those two little demons.

What arrangements he finally made is not yet known — listen to the explanation given in the next chapter.

What it’s about

Silver Horn, the younger demon king, disguises himself as an injured Daoist to trick the tender-hearted Tripitaka into carrying him, then crushes the monk under his own weight and calls three mountains, Sumeru, Mount Tai and Emei, down onto Wukong's shoulders to pin him while the pilgrims are seized. For once the Great Sage is genuinely trapped, staggering under a weight that would flatten an ordinary immortal.

Wukong summons the local mountain gods to bear the peaks in his place and slips free, then learns that the demons own five treasures, among them a gourd and a jade vase that suck a person in and dissolve him the moment he answers to his own name. He begins to plot, waylaying the demons' errand-messengers and stealing their gear by trickery rather than meeting the treasures head-on.

When it was written 背景

This 回 is the heart of the Level-Top Mountain arc and one of the novel's best contests of wits, because Wukong's raw strength is useless against a gourd that beats him by getting him to speak. The three-mountains ordeal and the name-calling treasures are the images to hold. Learners should watch the shift from force to cunning, and note the demons' one weakness, their own magic works by names, which is the loose thread Wukong will keep pulling to the arc's end.
