The Yellow Robe Demon Turns Tang Sanzang into a Tiger

030Chapter 30

Now, the fiend had bound Sha Seng tightly, but he neither came to kill him, nor beat him, nor spoke a single word of abuse against him.:「Grasping his steel blade, he thought secretly to himself: "Tang Seng is a man of the Great Land, and surely knows propriety and righteousness — surely it cannot be that, having spared his life, I let his disciple come to seize me?Ai!This must be because my wife sent some letter to that kingdom of his, and word leaked out.。」Let me go and question her about it." The fiend suddenly grew fierce and murderous, and meant to kill the princess.

Now, the princess, knowing nothing of this, had just finished dressing at her mirror and stepped forward. She saw the fiend with furious eyes and knitted brows, grinding his teeth.:「?」:「The princess still greeted him with a smiling face, saying, "My lord, what troubles you so?" The fiend spat out a curse: "You dog-hearted, base woman, utterly without human decency! When I first brought you here, I never said a single harsh word to you.穿西You wear brocade, you wear gold — whatever you lacked, I went and found it for you.Through the four seasons you have enjoyed comfort, and day by day I have shown you deep affection.?」:「?」:「How is it that you think only of your father and mother, without a shred of wifely feeling?" Hearing this, the princess was so frightened she fell to her knees on the ground, saying, "My lord, why do you speak today of parting?" The fiend said, "It is not I who would part from you — it is you who would part from me.I captured that Tang Seng, meaning to make a meal of him — why did you not tell me first, but simply let him go?It must be that you secretly wrote a letter, and had him carry it and send it for you;otherwise, how could these two monks have come again to attack my very door, demanding that I send you back??」:「?」:「?」:「?」:「。」Is this not something you arranged?" The princess said, "My lord, you wrong me — when did I ever send any letter?" The old fiend said, "You still talk back! I have caught your accomplice right here — is that not proof?" The princess said, "Who is it?" The old fiend said, "It is Tang Seng's second disciple, Sha the monk." Now, when a person comes to the point of death, who is willing to admit to it? She had no choice but to brazen it out and deny everything.:「The princess said, "My lord, calm your anger for a moment — let us go together and question him.If indeed there is a letter, then beat him to death, and I will accept it without complaint;?」but if there is no letter, would it not be a wrong to kill me for nothing?"

Hearing this, the fiend, without letting her finish, swung out a hand as broad as a winnowing basket and the color of indigo, seized the ten thousand strands of her jade-and-gold hair, dragged the princess forward, and flung her to the ground.:「?」:「Gripping his steel blade, he came to interrogate Sha Seng, snarling: "Sha the monk, how dare the two of you rashly attack our very door — is it because this woman sent a letter to that kingdom of hers, and the king ordered you to come?" Sha Seng, already bound there, saw how utterly vicious the fiend was, throwing the princess down and raising his blade to kill her, and he thought to himself: "Clearly it was she who sent the letter and saved my master — this is a debt of the greatest kindness. If I blurt out the truth now, he will kill the princess — would that not be repaying kindness with enmity?。」:「Enough, enough, enough. Old Sha has followed my master all this while and never repaid him the smallest merit — now that I am already bound and captured, let me repay my master's kindness with this very life." So he shouted: "Fiend, do not be so unreasonable! What letter did she ever send, that you wrong her so, and would take her life for it?We have come here to demand the princess back from you, and there is good reason for it.It is only because you seized my master and held him in your cave that my master happened to see the princess's appearance and manner.沿When we reached Baoxiang Kingdom to have our travel permit renewed, the king had a portrait made of the princess and had been making inquiries far and wide; he showed my master the princess's likeness and asked whether he had seen her anywhere along the road, and so my master spoke of her.The king thus learned she was his own daughter, and bestowed upon us imperial wine, ordering us to come and capture you, so that the princess might be returned to the palace. This is the plain truth — when was there ever any letter?。」If you wish to kill someone, kill me, old Sha — but do not wrongly harm an innocent person; that would be a grave offense against Heaven's justice."

:「。」Seeing how boldly Sha Seng spoke, the fiend threw down his blade, and with both hands lifted up the princess, saying, "It was my rash temper for a moment — I have offended you greatly; forgive me, forgive me." Then he gathered up her raven hair, set her jeweled coiffure back in place, and, gentle and tender, with a pleased and cheerful face, coaxed her back inside, and even invited her to sit in the place of honor while he made his apologies.:「。」The princess, being a woman of fickle heart, seeing his mistaken show of reverence, softened at once and said, "My lord, if you cherish the bond of husband and wife, please loosen Sha Seng's ropes a little." Hearing this, the old fiend at once ordered his underlings to untie Sha Seng's ropes, though they kept him chained there.:「:『便便。』便?」Seeing himself freed of his bonds, though still chained, Sha Seng stood up and thought to himself gladly: "As the ancients said, 'Show convenience to others, and you gain convenience for yourself.' Had I not made things easy for him, how would he ever have agreed to loosen me, even a little?"

The old fiend then also had a banquet prepared, to make amends to the princess and calm her fright.:「When the drinking had gone on till they were half tipsy, the old fiend suddenly changed into a fresh, bright set of clothes, took up a precious sword and belted it at his waist, then turned and, stroking the princess, said: "Wife, stay here at home and drink, and watch over our two children — do not let Sha the monk go free.。」:「?」:「While Tang Seng is still in that kingdom, I too will hurry over early to pay my respects to my in-laws." The princess said, "Whom do you mean to visit?" The old fiend said, "Your royal father.?」:「。』:「?」:「I am his son-in-law, and he is my father-in-law — how could I not go and pay my respects?" The princess said, "You must not go." The old fiend said, "Why must I not go?" The princess said, "My father's throne was not won by fighting on horseback through battle — it is a realm handed down from his ancestors. From childhood he was made crown prince and then ascended the throne; he has never even traveled far beyond the city gates, and has never seen a fierce fellow such as you.Your face and features are so hideously ugly that if he were to see you, I fear it would frighten him badly, and that would turn out badly for us instead.。」 :「。」It would be far better not to go and announce yourself." The old fiend said, "If that is so, then I will simply transform myself into a handsome fellow before I go." The princess said, "Try transforming yourself, and let me see."

What a fine monster he was — right there at the banquet table he shook himself and transformed, becoming a handsome, dashing man.Truly he was born looking like this:

Seeing him, the princess was overjoyed.:「?」:「The fiend said with a laugh, "Wife, have I transformed well?" The princess said, "You have transformed well, very well indeed.Once you enter the court, since my royal father cherishes kinship above all, he will surely have the civil and military officials keep you there to feast and drink.Should you be drinking there among them, be exceedingly careful, exceedingly cautious;。」:「。」do not let your true face show through, do not let your true form slip out and betray the secret, or it will be most unseemly." The old fiend said, "No need to instruct me — I have my own way of managing it."

Watch him now, mounting the clouds — in no time he had reached Baoxiang Kingdom. :「。」 :「?」:「Bringing his cloud down, he walked to outside the court gate and said to the gate officer, "The Third Royal Son-in-law has come especially to have an audience with His Majesty — please be so good as to announce me." The eunuch official in charge of reports went before the white jade steps and reported: "Your Majesty, the Third Royal Son-in-law has come to have an audience, and is now outside the court gate awaiting your summons." The king, who was at that moment conversing with Tang Seng, upon suddenly hearing of a "Third Royal Son-in-law," asked his assembled officials, "I have only two sons-in-law — how is there now a third?" The officials said, "This third son-in-law must surely be a fiend come here." The king said, "Should I summon him in?" The elder, his heart pounding with fear, said, "Your Majesty, as for a fiend — one that is not skilled in its arts has no real power. This one can know past and future, and can ride the clouds and mount the mist.。」Whether you summon him in or not, he will come in regardless — better, then, to summon him in, and spare ourselves an argument."

The king approved the suggestion and ordered him summoned, bringing the fiend up to the golden steps. He too performed the dance-and-shout ceremony of homage, just as anyone would.Seeing how handsome and fine-looking he was, none of the officials dared suspect he was a fiend. They were all mere mortal eyes of common flesh, and took him for a good man.便:「Seeing him standing as tall and imposing as a mountain ridge rising to the sky, the king took him for a pillar fit to aid the realm, and asked him, "Son-in-law, where is your home? From what region do you hail? When did you come to be joined with my daughter??」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「?」:「Why have you only come today to acknowledge our kinship?" The old fiend kowtowed and said, "Sire, your servant's home is at Bowl Mountain, Wave-Moon Cave, east of the city." The king said, "How far is that mountain from here?" The old fiend said, "Not far — only three hundred li." The king said, "A journey of three hundred li — how did my daughter come to be there and be joined with you?" The fiend, with glib and flowery words, answered with false and deceitful sincerity: "Sire, from my youth your humble servant loved practicing archery and horsemanship, and made his living by hunting.Thirteen years ago, leading several dozen household servants, I was out flying my hawks and loosing my hounds when I suddenly saw a striped, fierce tiger carrying a woman on its back, heading down the mountain slope.Your humble servant drew his bow and loosed a single arrow, felling the fierce tiger, and brought the woman back to my estate; with warm water I revived her and saved her life. When I asked what family she came from, she never once mentioned the words 'princess.'Had she told me from the start that she was Your Majesty's third princess, how would I ever have dared deceive Heaven and presume to wed her on my own?殿I would surely have come before the golden hall and, at the very least, sought some office or title to honor myself. It was only because she said she was the daughter of a commoner family that your humble servant kept her at my estate. The woman lovely, the man talented, both sides willing — and so we were joined together, and have remained so for these many years. At the time, after we were joined, I wished to slaughter that tiger and invite all my kin to celebrate, but it was Her Highness the princess who told me not to kill it.As for the reason she gave against killing it, she spoke a few words that were very well put, saying:

Because of what she said, your servant untied the tiger's bonds and spared its life. The tiger, bearing its arrow wound, fled off with tucked tail and hurried gait.Little did we know it survived, and in that mountain over these years cultivated itself, refined its body into a spirit, and gave itself over entirely to bewitching and harming people.Your servant has heard that in years past there were also several pilgrims seeking scriptures, all said to be Tang Seng from the Great Tang.I suspect that this tiger has harmed the real Tang Seng, taken his travel documents, and transformed itself into the likeness of a scripture-pilgrim, and is now in your court deceiving you, Sire.。」Sire, the one seated on the embroidered stool is none other than that very fierce tiger which carried off the princess thirteen years ago — he is no true seeker of scriptures at all."

Just see how that fickle-hearted king, with his foolish, deluded mortal eyes, failed to recognize the fiend, and instead took his whole tissue of lies for the truth.:「?」:「穿?」:「。」:「。」He said, "Worthy son-in-law, how is it you recognize this monk as the tiger that carried off the princess?" The fiend said, "Sire, in the mountains your servant ate tiger meat, wore tiger skins, slept and rose together with tigers — how could I fail to recognize one?" The king said, "Since you recognize him, have him show his true form for us to see." The monster said, "Lend me half a cup of clean water, and your servant will make him reveal his true form at once." The king ordered an official to fetch water and hand it to the son-in-law.

The fiend took the water in hand, leapt up, walked forward, and used a spell called the "Black-Eye Body-Binding Method.":「!」殿He recited an incantation, sprayed a mouthful of water toward Tang Seng, and shouted, "Change!" The elder's true body was hidden away above the hall, and in its place he truly turned into a striped, fierce tiger. At that moment, with the mortal eyes of both ruler and ministers looking on, that tiger appeared thus:

At the sight, the king's very soul scattered and his spirit fled. All the assembled officials were terrified and scattered in flight.使A few bold military officers, leading generals and captains, surged forward together and hacked wildly at it with every kind of weapon. This time, had it not been that Tang Seng's fate decreed he should not die, even twenty monks would have been beaten to a bloody pulp.Fortunately, at that moment the Guardians of the Six Ding and Six Jia, the Jiedi spirits, the Duty Gods, and the Faith-Protecting deities were secretly guarding him in midair, and so none of the weapons of those men could wound him at all.The assembled officials clamored on until nightfall, and only then did they manage to capture the tiger alive; they bound it with iron chains, placed it in an iron cage, and stored it away within the court chambers.

The king then issued a decree ordering the Court of Imperial Entertainments to lay out a great banquet, to thank the son-in-law for the kindness of his rescue;otherwise, he said, he himself would have come close to being harmed by that monk.殿That evening, when the assembled officials had left court, the fiend entered the Silver Peace Hall.Eighteen palace maids and beauties were also chosen to play music, sing, and dance, urging the fiend on to drink and make merry.姿The monster sat alone in the seat of honor, with ranks of ravishing, delicate beauties arrayed to left and right.Watch him now, enjoying his wine — by the second watch he had grown drunk, and could no longer restrain his wild nature: he leapt up, gave a great laugh, revealed his true form, and in a sudden fit of savagery reached out his winnowing-basket-sized hand, seized one of the girls who had been playing the pipa, and with a crunching bite tore off her head. The remaining seventeen palace maids, terrified out of their wits, fled and hid in wild disorder, running this way and that.Just look at this scene:

The people who fled outside dared not even cry out.As the night grew deep, they dared not disturb His Majesty. They all hid trembling beneath the low eaves of the courtyard wall, shaking with fear — but no more of that for now.

Now, to speak of the fiend: he sat up there alone, pouring and drinking by himself. After each cup he would drag over a corpse and gnaw at it with two bloody bites.:「。」While he enjoyed himself within, outside the word spread everywhere: "Tang Seng is a tiger spirit." The rumor spread wildly, on and on, until it reached the Gold Pavilion Post-house.At that time there was no one at the post-house, only the white horse standing at its trough, eating grass and fodder.西退西This horse had originally been the Little Dragon King of the Western Sea, who, having offended the laws of Heaven, had his horns sawn off and his scales stripped away, and was transformed into a white horse to carry Tang Seng westward in search of scriptures.:「Suddenly hearing people say that Tang Seng was a tiger spirit, he too thought to himself in secret: "My master is plainly a good man — he must have been transformed into a tiger spirit by some fiend, and thus harmed. What is to be done? What is to be done?。」:「!」Big Brother has been gone so long, and there is no word at all from Bajie or Sha Seng." He waited on until the second watch, and only then leapt up, saying, "If I do not save Tang Seng now, all this merit and achievement will come to nothing — to nothing!" Unable to bear it any longer, he snapped his tether at once, shook off saddle and bridle, and with a swift leap transformed himself, becoming once more a dragon. He rode up on a black cloud, straight up into the ninefold heavens, to look down and observe. There is a poem in proof of this, which reads:

From midair, the Little Dragon King saw that within the Silver Peace Hall the lamps and candles blazed bright.滿It turned out that eight great "hall-filling red" lamp-stands held eight lit candles.Bringing his cloud down and looking closely, he saw the fiend all alone up there, drinking wine and eating human flesh with terrible relish.:「The little dragon laughed and said, "This wretch is no good — he has let his true form slip and betrayed his own secret, showing his true colors like a worn-down shoe or a lopsided scale-weight.Is eating people any way to improve oneself? But I still do not know what has become of my master — instead I have run into this vile fiend.。」Let me first go and toy with him a while; if I succeed, I can seize the fiend, and there will still be time to save my master."

What a fine dragon king — he shook himself and transformed, becoming a palace maid, truly light and graceful of body, delicate and charming in bearing.:「。」:「。」He hurried forward and stepped inside, bowing to the fiend in greeting: "Son-in-law, do not harm my life — I have come to pour your wine for you." The fiend said, "Then pour the wine." The little dragon took up the pot and poured wine into his cup, filling it three or five parts higher than the rim of the cup, yet not a drop spilled over.使」。This was the little dragon's use of the "Water-Pressing Method.":「?」:「。」:「。」 Not recognizing what this was, the fiend was delighted and said, "So you have such skill?" The little dragon said, "I can pour it even higher still." The fiend said, "Pour more, pour more." He held up the pot and poured on and on, and the wine rose on and on, just like a thirteen-story pagoda, tapering to a peak yet brimming full, without spilling the least drop. The monster leaned his mouth over and drank down a cup;then dragged over a corpse and took a bite.:「?」:「。」He said, "Can you sing?" Xiaolong said, "I know a little." Following the tune, he sang a short song, and offered another cup of wine.:「?」:「。」The monster said, "Can you dance?" Xiaolong said, "I know a little, but with bare hands the dance won't look good." The monster lifted his robe, undid the precious sword worn at his waist, drew it from its scabbard, and handed it to Xiaolong.

Xiaolong took the blade, and seizing his chance, before the wine table went up three, down four, left five, right six, and let loose a flourishing swordplay. The monster watched, his eyes wide with astonishment.Xiaolong broke off the flourish and slashed a blow straight at the demon.滿Splendid monster—he turned aside to dodge, flustered in hand and foot, and raised an iron mace called the Mantanghong ("Hall Full of Red") to block the precious blade.滿That Mantanghong was originally forged of wrought iron, and together with its handle weighed eighty or ninety catties.殿The two of them left the Silver Peace Hall; Xiaolong revealed his true form, mounted a cloud, and fought the demon in midair. This bout, in the darkness of night, was a fierce battle indeed. How can this be shown?

The two of them fought amid the clouds for eight or nine rounds; Xiaolong's arms grew weak and numb, while the old demon's body remained strong and vigorous.Xiaolong could no longer hold out, and flung his blade flying to hack at the monster.滿便The monster had a trick for catching blades: with one hand he caught the precious sword, and with the other he flung down the Mantanghong and struck.Xiaolong, caught off guard, was struck upon the hind leg.In a great fright he brought his cloud down; luckily the Imperial Water River saved his life, and Xiaolong plunged headlong into the water. The demon gave chase but could not find him, so taking up the precious sword and the Mantanghong, he returned to the Silver Peace Hall and, as before, drank wine and went to sleep—no more to be said of that.

Now tell of Xiaolong, hidden beneath the water; after half an hour with no sound to be heard, only then, gritting his teeth and enduring the pain in his leg, did he leap up and out.Treading on a dark cloud, he went straight back to the post-station, changed once more into his former shape as a horse, and lay down beneath the trough.Pitiful—his whole body soaked with water, and his leg bearing a wound-scar.At that moment:

For now we will not speak further of Sanzang meeting with calamity, or of Xiaolong's defeat in battle. Now tell of Zhu Bajie: after parting from Sha Seng, he went straight off to hide among the grass and brush, and rooted himself out a muddy hollow like a pig's wallow. This one sleep lasted straight until midnight before he woke. When he woke, he had no idea what place this was.He rubbed his eyes, steadied his thoughts, and only then turned his ear to listen.Ah!It was truly a case of: the mountains so deep no dog barked, the wilds so wide few cocks crowed.:「』。He saw the stars shifting and the Dipper turning, and reckoned it was about the third watch; in his heart he thought, "If I want to go back and save Sha Seng, it's truly a case of 'a single thread makes no string, one palm alone claps no sound.'"。」"Enough, enough, enough—I'll go into the city first to see Master, get approval from His Majesty, then pick out some brave soldiers to help old Zhu come save Sha Seng tomorrow."

The idiot hastily sprang onto a cloud and headed straight back into the city.In half a moment he reached the post-station.At this time people were quiet and the moon was bright. He searched the two side corridors but could not find Master; he saw only the white horse lying there, its whole body soaked with water, and on its hind leg a bruise the size of a plate.:「Bajie, startled, said, "Doubly unlucky!""This wretched creature hasn't even been walking—how is it sweating, and how does its leg have a bruise?"。」:「。」"I suppose bad men robbed Master and beat the horse in the process." The white horse recognized Bajie, and suddenly spoke in human words, calling out, "Elder brother!" The idiot was so startled he fell over, then scrambled up and made to run outside.:「。」:「The white horse stretched out its body and caught his black robe in its mouth, saying, "Brother, don't be afraid of me." Bajie, trembling, said, "Brother, how is it that you're talking today?"。」:「?」:「。」:「"If you're speaking, there must be some great misfortune." Xiaolong said, "Do you know Master is in trouble?" Bajie said, "I don't know." Xiaolong said, "Of course you don't know.""You and Sha Seng showed off your skills before the emperor, thinking to capture the demon and win merit and reward.""Little did you expect the demon's powers were so great, and your own skills insufficient—you couldn't hold out against him.""One of you should properly have come back to bring word, yet not a sound was heard from either of you.""That demon changed into a handsome scholar, burst into the court, and claimed kinship with the emperor.""He turned my master into a striped fierce tiger, and now, seized by the assembled officials, he's locked inside an iron cage in the court chamber.""When I heard of this misery, my heart felt cut as if by a knife.""The two of you were away these past two days and knew nothing of it; fearing his life might be harmed at any moment, I had no choice but to turn into my dragon body to go rescue him, but unexpectedly, on reaching the court, I still could not find Master."殿"When I got outside the Silver Peace Hall, I met the demon, and changed myself into the likeness of a palace maid to deceive the monster.""The monster told me to dance with a blade for him to watch, so I seized the chance and slashed a blow at him."滿"But he dodged aside at once, raised a Mantanghong in both hands, and defeated me in the fight."滿"I flung my blade to hack at him again, but he caught the sword once more, flung down the Mantanghong, and struck me a blow on the hind leg.""That's why I plunged into the Imperial Water River, and so escaped with my life." The bruise on my leg is from his Mantanghong."

:「?」:「?」:「Hearing this, Bajie said, "Is this really true?" Xiaolong said, "Would I deceive you?" Bajie said, "What's to be done?""What's to be done?"?」:「便?」:「便"Can you still manage to move?" Xiaolong said, "What if I can move?" Bajie said, "If you can move, then just struggle your way down to the sea." :「。」 As for the luggage, let old Zhu carry it to Gaolao Zhuang, and go back to being a son-in-law there." When Xiaolong heard this, he caught Bajie's robe in his mouth and would not let go, and unable to hold back the tears streaming from his eyes, said, "Elder brother, you mustn't be so lazy and give up." Bajie said, "If not lazy, then what?"?」"Brother Sha has already been captured by him, and I can't beat him in a fight—if we don't break up the group now, what are we waiting for?"

:「Xiaolong pondered for a long while, and again with tears dripping, said, "Elder brother, don't speak of breaking up the group."。」:「?」:「"If you want to save Master, you need only go and invite someone here." Bajie said, "Who would you have me invite?" Xiaolong said, "Go quickly now, ride a cloud back to Huaguo Shan, and invite Elder Senior Brother Sun Wukong to come."。」 He still has great power to subdue demons, and is sure to rescue Master, and also avenge for you and me this defeat." Bajie said, "Brother, let's just invite someone else instead.""That monkey and I aren't on the best of terms.""Earlier, on Baihu Ling, when he beat Lady Baigu to death, he blamed me for egging Master on to recite the Tight-Fillet Spell.""I only meant it as a joke, but who'd have thought the old monk would really recite it, and drove him away for good.""I don't know how deeply he resents me for it, but he'll certainly refuse to come."?」:「"And if our words don't match up even a little, that mourner's staff of his is heavy—if he doesn't know when to stop and lands a few blows on me, how could I survive?" Xiaolong said, "He definitely won't hit you.""He is a Monkey King who has both benevolence and righteousness.":『。』"When you see him, don't mention at first that Master is in trouble—just say, 'Master misses you,' and coax him into coming back." :「"Once he arrives here and sees a situation like this, he's bound to feel it's an injustice, and will certainly want to fight it out with the demon—and he's sure to capture the demon and save my master." Bajie said, "All right, all right.""You're being so devoted about this—if I don't go, it'll show that I'm not devoted enough.""On this trip, if Xingzhe really is willing to come, I'll travel back together with him;"。」:「。」"but if he won't come, then don't you expect me back either—I won't come back either." Xiaolong said, "Go on, go on—he's sure to come."

Sure enough, the idiot picked up his rake, straightened his robe, leapt up, trod on a cloud, and headed straight east. This time, too, it was fated that Tangseng's life would be spared.便The idiot met with a favorable wind, and spread out his two ears just like sails, so that he soon crossed the Eastern Ocean and brought his cloud down. Before he knew it the sun had risen, and he went into the mountains to find his way.

Just as he was walking along, he suddenly heard the sound of voices. When Bajie looked closely, it turned out to be Xingzhe in a mountain hollow, gathering a crowd of monkey-demons together.:「。」:「He sat upon a stone cliff, and before him more than twelve hundred monkeys, arranged in ranks and files, were calling out, "Long live the Great Sage, our lord!" Bajie said, "Now this is truly enjoyable, truly enjoyable—no wonder he refuses to be a monk and only wants to come home. So this is what's so good about it—such a great estate, and so many little monkeys to wait on him.""If old Zhu had a mountain estate like this, I wouldn't be a monk either.""Now that I've already come here, what's the best way to handle this?"。」"I must certainly go and see him." The idiot was somewhat afraid of him, and dared not meet him openly, so he slipped along the grassy cliffside, sneaking and sneaking, until he squeezed in among the twelve or thirteen hundred monkeys, and kowtowed along with them.

便:「Little did he know that Great Sage Sun was sitting up high, and his eyes were sharp and keen, so he saw him clearly, and asked, "That foreigner bowing chaotically among the ranks—where's he from?"。」"Bring him up here." Before he had even finished speaking, the little monkeys swarmed like bees, pushed Bajie forward, and pressed him down onto the ground.:「?」:「Xingzhe said, "Where are you a foreigner from?" Bajie, lowering his head, said, "I dare not presume—thank you for asking."。」:「"I'm not a foreigner, I'm an old acquaintance, an old acquaintance." Xingzhe said, "All the monkeys under this Great Sage's command look just the same.""Your face and features are grown quite differently, your appearance rather clumsy and coarse—you must surely be a demon come from somewhere else.""Since you've come from elsewhere, if you wish to join my ranks, you must first submit a formal register giving your particulars and report your name, so that I may properly keep you here enrolled among the ranks."?」:「"And if I do not keep you, how dare you bow about here so recklessly?" Bajie, lowering his head and jutting out his snout, said, "Shameless—already putting on such a face!"。」:「。」:「。」:「。」:「。」:「。」"You and I have been sworn brothers for years now, yet you pretend not to recognize me and call me some kind of foreigner." Xingzhe laughed and said, "Raise your head and let me look." The idiot stuck his snout upward and said, "Look then—if you don't recognize me, surely you recognize my snout!" Xingzhe couldn't help laughing and said, "Zhu Bajie!" Hearing himself called by name, he sprang up in one roll and said, "That's right, that's right, I am Zhu Bajie!" He thought to himself again, "Once he recognizes me, it'll be easier to talk."

:「Xingzhe said, "You're not following Tangseng to fetch the scriptures—what are you doing coming here instead?""I suppose you offended Master, and Master has banished you and sent you back."。」:「。」:「?」:「。」:「"If there's some letter of dismissal, bring it here for me to see." Bajie said, "I never offended him, and he has no letter of dismissal, nor has he driven me away." Xingzhe said, "If there's no letter of dismissal, and he hasn't driven you away, then what have you come here to me for?" Bajie said, "Master misses you, and sent me to invite you." Xingzhe said, "He wouldn't invite me, nor would he miss me.""That day he swore an oath to Heaven and wrote out a letter of dismissal in his own hand—how would he now be willing to miss me, and willing to send you all this way to invite me?"。」:「。」:「?」:「』,"I certainly should not go, in any case." Bajie, right on the spot, made up a lie, and said hastily, "He truly does miss you, he truly does miss you." Xingzhe said, "How did he come to miss me?" Bajie said, "Master was riding along on the horse and called out 'Disciple!'—I didn't happen to hear it, and Sha Seng pretended to be deaf.""So Master thought of you, and said the two of us were useless, and that you were still a clever and quick-witted person, who always answered the moment you were called, and could answer ten things from one question.""Because he missed you so, he especially sent me to come and invite you."。」:「。」:「。」:「?」"I do hope with all my heart that you'll go take a walk there—firstly, so as not to disappoint his hopeful heart, and secondly, so as not to betray my purpose in coming all this way." Hearing this, Xingzhe leapt down from the cliff, took hold of Bajie's arm with his hand, and said, "Worthy brother, it's troubled you to come so far—stay and enjoy yourself with me a while." Bajie said, "Brother, this place is so far away, and I fear Master will be waiting and grow anxious if I'm late, so I won't stay to enjoy myself." Xingzhe said, "Since you've come all this way, why not take a look at how my mountain scenery is?" The idiot dared not refuse too insistently, and had no choice but to follow him along.

The two of them went hand in hand, with all the little monkey-demons following behind, up to the very summit of Huaguo Shan. What a fine mountain—ever since the Great Sage had returned home, these past days, it had been put back in order, restored to its former state as good as new.Behold:

:「?」:「?」Bajie could not take in enough of the sight, and full of joy said, "Brother, what a wonderful place—truly the foremost famous mountain under Heaven." Xingzhe said, "Worthy brother, could one make a living here?" Bajie laughed and said, "Listen to what you're saying, brother—this treasured mountain is a blessed cave-heaven paradise, so why speak of merely making a living?"

The two of them talked and laughed together for a good while, then came down the mountain.:「。」:「By the roadside they saw several little monkeys, holding up deep-purple grapes, fragrant pears and jujubes, golden loquats, and bright red bayberries, kneeling by the road and calling out, "Great Sage, our lord, please come take your morning meal." Xingzhe laughed and said, "My brother Zhu has a big appetite, and fruit alone won't serve as a proper meal for him."。」:「"Well, never mind, never mind—don't think it too meager, just make do and eat a bit as a snack." Bajie said, "Though I do have a big appetite, I can still follow local custom when in a place."。」"Bring them here, bring them here—I'll eat a few myself to taste something fresh."

The two of them ate the fruit, and gradually the sun climbed higher.:「The idiot, afraid of delaying the rescue of Tangseng, kept urging him on, saying, "Brother, Master is over there hoping and waiting for you and me."。」:「。」:「。」:「。」:「?」:「"I hope you'll come with me quickly." Xingzhe said, "Worthy brother, please go take a look inside the Shuilian Dong for a while." Bajie firmly declined, saying, "I'm most grateful for your kind intentions, elder brother, but since Master has been waiting so long, please don't trouble to have me go into the cave." Xingzhe said, "Since that's so, I dare not keep you any longer—let us take our leave of each other right here." Bajie said, "Brother, you're not coming?" Xingzhe said, "Where would I go?""Here, Heaven doesn't restrain me and Earth doesn't govern me—I'm free and at ease; if I don't enjoy myself here, why would I go be a monk?""I'm not going—you go on by yourself." Just tell Tangseng this from me: since he already drove me away, let him not think of me again." When the idiot heard this, he dared not press him too hard, fearing only that pressing him might provoke his temper and bring down a couple of blows from his staff.Having no other choice, he had no option but to murmur his assent, take his leave, and find his way off.

When Xingzhe saw that he had gone, he at once dispatched two nimble little monkeys to follow Bajie, to listen for whatever he might say.:「Sure enough, the idiot went down the mountain, and before he'd gone even three or four li, he turned back, pointed at Xingzhe, and cursed aloud, "This monkey—instead of being a monk, he'd rather be a demon.""This monkey-wretch—I came with good intentions to invite him, yet he wouldn't go." Fine, if you won't go, then don't." He walked a few more steps, then cursed a few more times.:「。」:「!」滿The two little monkeys ran hurriedly back to report, "Great Sage, our lord, that Zhu Bajie isn't being at all honest—he walks a bit, then curses a bit." Xingzhe flew into a rage and shouted, "Bring him back here!" The monkeys came flying over the ground in pursuit, caught up with him, knocked Bajie over, grabbed his bristles, pulled his ears, tugged his tail, and yanked his hair, and hauled him back.

In the end, we do not know how he was dealt with, nor whether he lived or died—listen to the explanation in the next chapter.

What it’s about

The Yellow-Robe monster, disguising himself as a handsome nobleman, presents himself at the Precious-Elephant court as the princess's long-lost husband and, to discredit Tripitaka, works a spell that turns the captured monk into a tiger, which the palace cages as a man-eating beast. The disciples' master is now a dumb animal behind bars, and nobody at court suspects the demon in their midst.

Only the White-Dragon Horse, once a prince of the seas, understands what has happened. He changes into a palace maid and attacks the demon at his feast, is wounded and driven back into the water, and can do no more than urge Bajie, who has crept back, to swallow his pride and go fetch Wukong from Flower-Fruit Mountain. Bajie sets out as the party's last remaining hope.

When it was written 背景

This 回 brings the crisis without Wukong to its lowest point: the master himself is transformed and helpless, and the last member able to act is the horse. The dragon-horse's brief, doomed rebellion is a favourite detail, revealing that even the pilgrims' mount is a disguised immortal. Learners should read the tiger-transformation as the plot mechanism that finally makes Wukong's recall unavoidable, and should follow Bajie's reluctant errand straight into the next chapter.
