Princess Baihua Aids the Monk and Bajie Seeks Monkey's Return
第029回Chapter 29
A poem says:
Now the story tells how Bajie and Sha Monk fought the monster for some thirty rounds without either side winning. You ask why neither side won? If it came to raw skill, never mind two monks — even twenty monks could not have matched that spirit. It was only because Tang Sanzang's fated span was not yet to end, that unseen guardian spirits of the Dharma were secretly protecting him;空中又有那六丁六甲、五方揭諦、四值功曹、一十八位護教伽藍助著八戒、沙僧。and in the air the Six Ding and Six Jia generals, the Five Directions' Herald Spirits, the Four Duty Officers of the Watches, and the eighteen guardian Galan of the faith were all lending their strength to Bajie and Sha Monk.
But leave aside for now the fighting of these three. Now the story tells how the elder, weeping in grief inside the cave, thought of his disciples, tears streaming from his eyes, and said, "Wuneng, ah — I wonder in what village you have met with kindly friends and lingered over an offered meal? Wujing, ah — you too do not know where to search for him; can the two of you have found each other? How could you know that I have met a demon and suffer hardship here? When shall I ever meet you both again, escape this great calamity, and hasten on to Vulture Peak?" Just as he was weeping in sorrow and vexation, he suddenly saw a woman come out from within the cave, steadying herself against the soul-binding post, calling out, "Elder, where have you come from? Why have you been bound here?" When the elder heard this, he stole a tearful glance — the woman appeared to be about thirty years of age. So he said, "Bodhisattva, there is no need to ask. I am already one fated to die, having walked into your household. If you mean to eat me, then eat me and be done — why ask more?" The woman said, "I am not one who eats people. My home lies some three hundred li west of here, where there stands a city called the Kingdom of Elephantia. I am the third princess of that kingdom's king, my childhood name being Baihuaxiu, 'Shamed by a Hundred Flowers.' It is only that thirteen years ago, on the night of the fifteenth of the eighth month, while I was out enjoying the moon, a sudden violent wind carried me off, seized by this demon, and I have been his wife for these thirteen years, bearing him children here, with never a word sent back to the court. I think of my parents, unable to see them again. Where have you come from, that he seized you?" Tang Sanzang said, "This poor monk was sent to fetch scriptures from the Western Heaven; not expecting it, I wandered by chance and mistakenly stumbled in here. Now he means to seize my two disciples as well, to steam and eat all together." The princess said with a smiling comfort, "Elder, set your heart at ease — since you are one fetching scriptures, I can save you. That Kingdom of Elephantia lies on your great road westward. If you will carry a letter for me there, and present it with respects to my parents, I shall then persuade him to spare you." Tripitaka nodded and said, "Bodhisattva, if you can indeed save this poor monk's life, I am willing to serve as the bearer of your letter and message."
The princess hurried to the back, at once composed a letter home, and sealed it carefully. She came to the post, untied Tang Sanzang, and handed him the letter. Once freed, Tang Sanzang took the letter in his hands and said, "Bodhisattva, my deep thanks for the favor of saving my life. On this journey of mine, once I pass through your honored country, I shall certainly deliver it to the king in person.只恐日久年深,你父母不肯相認,奈何?Only I fear that after so many long years, your parents may not be willing to acknowledge you — what then? Please do not blame this poor monk for speaking words that might prove false." The princess said, "No matter. My royal father has no son, having borne only us three sisters. If he sees this letter, he is bound to feel regard for you." Tripitaka tucked the letter tightly into his sleeve, thanked the princess, and turned to go out. The princess caught hold of him and said, "You cannot get out through the front gate — all the demons great and small are outside the gate waving banners and shouting, beating drums and clashing gongs, aiding the Great King in his battle with your disciples. You had best go out by the back gate. If the Great King himself catches you, he will still question you first;只恐小妖兒捉了,不分好歹,挾生兒傷了你的性命。but I fear that if the lesser demons catch you, they will not care good from ill, and in their eagerness might take your life. Let me go before him and speak a word to smooth things over. If the Great King releases you, wait until your disciples have gotten some sign from him, then seek you out and travel on together properly." When Tripitaka heard this, he kowtowed, respectfully followed her instructions, took leave of the princess, and slipped away outside the back gate; not daring to walk on alone, he hid himself among the thorny brambles.
Now the story tells how the princess, her heart devising a clever scheme, hurried forward, went out the gate, and parted the crowd of demons great and small. She heard only the clang and clatter of weapons ringing wildly. It was Bajie and Sha Monk fighting the monster there in midair. The princess called out sharply, "Yellow Robe, my lord!" When the demon king heard the princess calling, he at once abandoned Bajie and Sha Monk, brought his cloud down, tucked away his steel blade, and taking the princess's arm said, "Wife, what is it you wish to say?" The princess said, "My lord, just now as I lay asleep within the gauze curtains, in a dream, I suddenly saw a golden-armored spirit." The demon said, "What golden-armored spirit? What business would he have coming to my gate?" The princess said, "When I was young in the palace, I once secretly made a private vow to the gods: that if I were to marry a worthy son-in-law consort, I would climb famous mountains, pay respects at immortal shrines, and give alms to monks. Ever since I was wed to you, we husband and wife have lived in joyful union, and until now I never once mentioned it. That golden-armored spirit came to demand fulfillment of the vow, and startled me awake with a shout — it turned out to be but a dream of the southern branch. For this reason I hurried to compose myself and come to my lord to tell of it, never expecting that there would be a monk bound to that post. I earnestly beg my lord, in mercy and compassion, to consider my humble wish and spare that monk — let it count as my giving alms to a monk in fulfillment of my vow. I do not know whether my lord will consent?" The demon said, "Wife, you are being far too anxious — what is this, such a pressing matter? When I wish to eat people, is there nowhere I could scoop up a few to eat? What difference does one stray monk make? Let him go, then." The princess said, "My lord, let him go out by the back gate." The demon said, "How tiresome — if I am letting him go, why fuss over back gate or front gate?" So he took up his steel blade and called out loudly, "Zhu Bajie, come here. It is not that I fear you, and so will not fight you;看著我渾家的分上,饒了你師父也。but for the sake of my wife's regard, I shall spare your master. Go quickly to the back gate and find him, and be off to the west. If you dare trespass into my territory again, I will absolutely not forgive it."
When Bajie and Sha Monk heard these words, it was just as if they had been released back through the very Gate of Ghosts — at once they hurriedly led the horse and shouldered the load, scurrying off like rats. Rounding past the back gate of the Wave Moon Cave, they called out, "Master!" The elder recognized their voices and answered from among the brambles. Sha Monk parted a path through the grass, helped his master up, and in haste got him onto the horse. Here we have:
Bajie led the way at the head, Sha Monk following behind; they left the pine forest and came out onto the main road. Watch the two of them, bickering and grumbling on and on, while Tripitaka did nothing but try to make peace between them. At dusk they would seek lodging first, and at cockcrow rise early to see the sky. Stage by stage, past long pavilions and short pavilions, before they knew it they had traveled two hundred and ninety-nine li. Suddenly raising their heads, they saw a fine city before them — it was the Kingdom of Elephantia. Truly a splendid place it was:
One could not take in all the fine scenery of the Kingdom of Elephantia. Master and disciples, the three of them, gathered up their luggage and horse and settled to rest at the official post-house.
Tang Sanzang walked on foot to outside the court gate and said to the gate usher, "There is a monk from the Tang court here specially to have audience with His Majesty, to have his travel rescript renewed — I beg you to report this in to him." The yellow-gated official in charge of memorials hurried to the white jade steps and reported, "Your Majesty, there is an eminent monk from the Tang court who wishes to seek audience with Your Majesty, to have his rescript renewed." When the king heard it was from the Tang, a great nation, and moreover was said to be a holy monk from distant lands, his heart was greatly pleased, and he at once granted the request. He said, "Summon him in." Tripitaka was summoned up to the golden steps, and after performing the ritual dance and shouts of homage,兩邊文武多官無不嘆道:「上邦人物,禮樂雍容如此。」 the many civil and military officials on both sides could not help sighing in admiration, "Truly a figure from the great nation above — how refined and dignified in ceremony and bearing." The king said, "Elder, what brings you to our country?" Tripitaka said, "This lowly monk is a disciple of Shakyamuni from the Tang court, and by the imperial edict of our Son of Heaven, am journeying to the Western Heaven to fetch scriptures. I originally carry a rescript, and upon reaching Your Majesty's exalted kingdom, it is proper that it be renewed. For this reason, not knowing the proper etiquette of advance and retreat, I have disturbed the dragon countenance." The king said, "Since you have a rescript from the Tang Son of Heaven, bring it up for me to see." Tripitaka presented it with both hands, unfolding it and laying it upon the imperial desk. The rescript read:
Having seen it, the king took his kingdom's jade seal, affixed his signature mark, and handed it back to Tripitaka.
Tripitaka gave thanks for the favor, took back the rescript, and further memorialized, "This poor monk has come first to have the rescript renewed, and second, to deliver a family letter to Your Majesty." The king said with great delight, "What letter is this?" Tripitaka said, "Your Majesty's third princess was carried off by the Yellow Robe demon of Wave Moon Cave on Bowl Mountain; this poor monk happened to encounter her, and so brings this letter." When the king heard this, tears filled his eyes and streamed down as he said, "Since the princess vanished thirteen years ago, I know not how many officials of the two ranks have been demoted and dismissed, nor how many maidservants and eunuchs within and without the palace have been beaten to death over it;只說是走出皇宮,迷失路徑,無處找尋。it was only ever said that she had wandered out of the palace and lost her way, with nowhere to search for her. Throughout the whole city, countless households among the common people were also interrogated, yet still no trace was found. How could we have known it was a demon that had carried her off? Only today, hearing this news abruptly, am I moved to grief and tears." Tripitaka drew the letter from his sleeve and presented it. The king took it, and on seeing the two characters "safe and well," his hands went weak all the more, and he could not bring himself to break the seal. He gave the order to summon the Grand Academician of the Hanlin Academy to the hall to read the letter. The academician came up to the hall at once. Before the hall stood the many civil and military officials, and behind the hall the queens, consorts, and palace women, all listening intently with ears strained. The academician broke the seal and read it aloud. It was written thus:
When the academician had finished reading the family letter, the king wept aloud, the three consorts shed tears, and the civil and military officials were all moved to sorrow — before and behind, there was none who did not grieve.
The king wept for a long while, then asked the officials of the two ranks, "Who among you dares raise troops and lead soldiers, to capture the demon for me and rescue my Princess Baihua?" He asked several times over, but not a single person dared answer. They were truly like military officers carved of wood, and civil officials molded of clay. The king's heart grew ever more troubled, and his tears gushed like a spring. Then the many officials all together bowed low and memorialized, "Let Your Majesty cease from vexation for now. The princess has been lost these full thirteen years with no word, and now by chance a holy monk of the Tang has brought a letter here — we do not yet know if it is genuine. Moreover, we your servants are but ordinary men on ordinary horses; what we have studied is the art of war and military strategy, fit only for arraying troops and encamping garrisons, to guard the nation against invasion and trouble. That demon is a creature that comes on clouds and goes on mist — we cannot even come face to face with it, so how could we go to subdue and rescue her? We think that this fetcher of scriptures from the Eastern Land must be a holy monk of the great nation above. This monk's Way is so lofty that dragons and tigers submit to him, and his virtue so weighty that ghosts and spirits revere him — he must surely possess arts for subduing demons. As the old saying goes: 'He who comes speaking of trouble is himself the man of trouble.' It would be best to invite this elder at once to subdue the demon and rescue the princess — that would truly be the plan of perfect safety."
When the king heard this, he turned quickly and at once invited Tripitaka, saying, "Elder, if you have the skill and can exert your dharma power to capture the demon and bring my child home to court, then you need not even go on to the Western Heaven to worship the Buddha — you may grow your hair back and keep it, and I shall become sworn brothers with you, and we shall sit together upon the dragon throne and share riches and honor together — how would that be?" Tripitaka hastily rose and said, "This poor monk knows only a little of chanting to the Buddha; in truth I have no skill at subduing demons." The king said, "If you yourself have no skill at subduing demons, how do you dare go to the Western Heaven to worship the Buddha?" The elder could not conceal it, and so spoke of his two disciples. He memorialized, "Your Majesty, this poor monk alone could truly never have reached this place. This poor monk has two disciples, who are skilled at opening roads through mountains and laying bridges over waters, and have protected this poor monk in reaching here." The king said in surprise, "You monk are quite unreasonable — since you have disciples, why did you not bring them in together with you to see me? Were they to come to court, even if there were no reward to their liking, there would certainly be a fitting portion of a meal offered." Tripitaka said, "This poor monk's disciples are of ugly and coarse appearance, and I dared not bring them presumptuously into court, fearing they might startle and harm Your Majesty's dragon person." The king laughed and said, "Listen to you, monk — surely you don't think I would be afraid of them?" Tripitaka said, "I dare not say more. My eldest disciple is surnamed Zhu, named Wuneng, called Bajie; he was born with a long snout and jutting tusks, bristly mane and fan-like ears, a thick and heavy body with a great belly, and when he walks the wind rises around him. My second disciple is surnamed Sha, his Dharma name Wujing, called Monk; he was born a full twelve feet tall, with arms broad enough for three spans, a face the color of indigo blue, a mouth like a basin of blood, eyes flashing and glinting, and teeth set like rows of nails. They are both of such an appearance, and that is why I dared not presumptuously bring them into court." The king said, "Now that you have described them to me this once, why should I, the lonely one, fear them? Summon them in." He at once had a gold placard sent to the post-house to invite them.
When that idiot heard he was being invited, he said to Sha Monk, "Brother, you still would not let the letter be delivered — now you see the good that comes of delivering a letter. I suppose our master delivered the letter, and the king said the letter-bearer must not be treated carelessly, and is certainly arranging a banquet to entertain him;他的食腸不濟,有你我之心,舉出名來,故此著金牌來請。his own stomach's capacity is no match for it, and knowing that you and I have an appetite, he brought up our names, and that is why the gold placard has come to invite us. Let us all eat a good meal, and tomorrow we can travel on well." Sha Monk said, "Brother, whatever the reason may be, shall we just go?" So they turned over the luggage and horse to the post-house officer, each took up his own weapon, and followed the gold placard into court. They soon reached before the white jade steps, stood off to the side, made a single bow of respect toward the throne, and did not move again after that. Among the many civil and military officials, there was not one who was not afraid. They all said, "These two monks being ugly is one thing, but they are far too coarse and rude — how can it be that on seeing our king they do not even bow down, and after their bow merely stand upright without further ado? How strange, how strange." Bajie, hearing this, said, "Gentlemen, do not discuss us so — we are simply built this way: at first glance we do indeed look somewhat ugly, but if you look at us a while longer, we grow quite pleasing to the eye."
When the king saw how ugly they were, his heart was already startled. And when he then heard the idiot speak up in this way, he grew all the more terrified, so that he could not sit steady and fell right off the dragon throne. Fortunately his attendant officials nearby caught and raised him up. Tang Sanzang, flustered, knelt before the hall, kowtowing again and again without pause, saying, "Your Majesty, this poor monk deserves death ten thousand times over, ten thousand times over. I said my disciples were ugly and dared not come to court, fearing to injure your dragon person — and indeed it has startled Your Majesty's carriage." The king, trembling, walked forward and helped him up, saying, "Elder, it is fortunate that you spoke of it beforehand;若未說,猛然見他,寡人一定諕殺了也。」 had you not spoken, and had I suddenly seen them without warning, I, the lonely one, would certainly have been frightened to death." The king composed himself for a good while, then asked, "Elder Zhu, Elder Sha — which of you is skilled at subduing demons?" That idiot, not knowing better or worse, answered, "Old Zhu can subdue them." The king said, "How do you subdue them?" Bajie said, "I am the Marshal of the Heavenly Reeds; only because I offended against the laws of Heaven did I fall down into the mortal world, and fortunately am now returned to the right path as a monk. Ever since coming here from the Eastern Land, I have been the foremost at subduing demons." The king said, "Since you are a heavenly general come down to the mortal world, you must surely be skilled at transformation." Bajie said, "I dare not claim much, I dare not — I do know after a fashion a few transformations." The king said, "Try transforming into something for me to see." Bajie said, "Please name the subject, and I shall transform accordingly." The king said, "Transform into something big."
Now Bajie himself possessed thirty-six kinds of transformations, and right there before the steps he showed off his skill — forming the magic signs with his fingers and reciting the spell, he gave a shout of "Grow!", arched his back, and at once grew to a height of eight or nine zhang, looking just like the Way-Opening Spirit himself. This so frightened the officials of both ranks that they trembled and shook, and the whole court, ruler and ministers alike, stood dumbstruck and gaping. At that moment the general in charge of guarding the hall asked, "Elder, growing this tall as you have — surely there must be some limit to how tall you can grow?" That idiot again came out with idiotic words, saying, "It depends on the wind. An east wind would still be manageable, a west wind I could also just about handle;若是南風起,把青天也拱個大窟窿。」 but if a south wind should rise, I would even punch a great hole clean through the blue sky." The king, greatly alarmed, said, "Put away your magic powers — we now understand well enough what kind of transformation this is." Bajie hunched himself down, and returned once more to his original form, standing in attendance before the steps.
The king asked further, "Elder, on this expedition, what weapon will you use to fight him?" Bajie drew the rake from his waist and said, "Old Zhu uses what is called the muck-rake." The king said with a laugh, "That might rather spoil the dignity of our court. I have here whips, maces, melon-hammers, and hammers; blades, spears, battle-axes, and axes; swords, halberds, lances, and sickles — choose whichever suits your hand and take it. What kind of weapon is that rake?" Bajie said, "Your Majesty does not know. This rake of mine, though crude and clumsy-looking, has truly been my constant companion since my youth. I once served as a marshal in the Heavenly River's Water Palace, commanding eighty thousand marine troops, all by the strength of this rake. Now, having descended to the mortal world to protect my master, whenever I meet a mountain I smash open the lairs of tigers and wolves, and whenever I meet water I overturn the dens of dragons and sea monsters — all with this rake."
Hearing these words, the king was greatly delighted and convinced. He at once ordered his consorts and concubines: "Bring a whole bottle of the imperial wine I use myself, to see the elder off." Then he filled a goblet to the brim and offered it to Bajie, saying, "Elder, this cup of wine is but a small token of my gratitude for your trouble. Once you have captured the demon and rescued my daughter, I shall hold a great banquet in reward and give you a thousand pieces of gold in thanks." The idiot took the cup in hand — though coarse in appearance, he behaved with some refinement — and made a deep bow to Sanzang, saying, "Master, this wine should by rights be drunk first by you;但君王賜我,不敢違背,讓老豬先吃了,助助興頭,好捉妖怪。」 but since the king has bestowed it upon me, I dare not decline. Let old Zhu drink it first, to raise my spirits for catching the demon." The idiot drained it in one gulp, then poured another cup and handed it to his master. Sanzang said, "I do not drink wine; you brothers may have it." Sha Seng came forward and took it. Bajie then summoned clouds beneath his feet and rose straight up into the sky.國王見了道:「豬長老又會騰雲?」Seeing this, the king said, "Elder Zhu can also ride the clouds?"
After the idiot had gone, Sha Seng too drained his wine in one gulp and said, "Master, when the Yellow-Robe Demon captured you, the two of us fought him and only managed an even match. Now that Second Brother has gone alone, I fear he cannot overcome him." Sanzang said, "Just so — disciple, you should go and help him." Hearing this, Sha Seng too leapt up onto the clouds and sprang away. The king, alarmed, seized hold of Tang Seng and said, "Elder, please stay and sit with me a while — do not go riding off on the clouds too." Tang Seng said, "Alas, alas, I cannot travel even half a step that way." At this time the two of them sat conversing in the hall, and we shall speak no more of it for now.
Now to tell of Sha Seng, who caught up with Bajie and said, "Brother, I have come." Bajie said, "Brother, what have you come for?" Sha Seng said, "Master sent me to come and help you." Bajie was greatly pleased and said, "Well said, you've come at just the right time. Let the two of us join our strength and hearts to go and capture that monster; even if nothing else comes of it, we shall at least make our names known in this kingdom." Just look at them:
Before long the two of them reached the mouth of the cave and brought their clouds down to land. Bajie raised his rake and struck the gate of the Wave-Moon Cave with all his strength, smashing a hole as big as a peck-measure in the stone gate. This so frightened the little demon guarding the gate that he opened it, and seeing it was the two of them, he ran in hastily to report: "Great King, it's bad — the long-snouted, big-eared monk and the dark, sullen-faced monk have come again and smashed the gate!" The demon said in alarm, "This must again be Zhu Bajie and Sha Monk, the two of them. 老怪咄的一聲道:「胡纏,忘了物件,就敢打上門來?I spared their master — how dare they come again to break down my gate?" The little demon said, "Perhaps they forgot something and have come back for it." The old demon snorted and said, "Nonsense! Would they dare come smashing at my gate just for having forgotten something? There must be some reason for it." He hastily donned his armor, seized his steel blade, and came out to ask, "You monks, since I have already spared your master, how dare you come again to smash my gate?" Bajie said, "You wretched fiend, you've done a fine thing." The old demon said, "What thing?" Bajie said, "You lured away the Third Princess of the Kingdom of Baoxiang into your cave, and relying on your strength you have forced her to be your wife, keeping her here for thirteen years — it's high time you returned her. I have come by the king's own decree, specifically to capture you. Go inside quickly and bind yourself with a rope and come out on your own, and that will spare old Zhu the trouble of laying hands on you." Hearing this, the old demon flew into a great rage. Just look at him — grinding his steel teeth with a grating sound;滴溜溜,睜圓環眼;his ring-shaped eyes rolling wide open;雄糾糾,舉起刀來;raising his blade with fierce, martial bearing;赤淋淋,攔頭便砍。and, bare-armed and gleaming, hacking straight down at their heads. Bajie twisted his body to dodge, then met him head-on with his nine-toothed rake;隨後又有沙僧舉寶杖趕上前齊打。and right behind him Sha Seng raised his treasure staff and rushed forward to strike together. This battle waged atop the mountain was different from the one before. Truly it was:
They fought before the mountain slope for eight or nine rounds, and gradually Bajie began to flag — his rake grew hard to lift, and his strength failed to keep up. You ask why he could no longer hold his own against the demon this time? At the time of their first battle, the various guardian spirits of the Dharma, because Tang Seng was inside the cave, had secretly aided Bajie and Sha Seng, so they had managed only an even match;此時諸神都在寶象國護定唐僧,所以二人難敵。but now all the spirits were in the Kingdom of Baoxiang guarding Tang Seng, and so the two of them found it hard to withstand the demon.
The idiot said, "Sha Seng, come forward and keep fighting him a while — let old Zhu go relieve himself." With that, without a further thought for Sha Seng, he slipped off and, heedless of what lay ahead, plunged straight into a tangle of wormwood, creeping vines, thorny brush, and kudzu. Never minding that his scalp was scraped raw and his snout and face were scratched and bruised, he rolled himself down and lay still, not daring to come out again. He only kept half an ear cocked, listening for the sound of the clapper.
Seeing that Bajie had run off, the demon turned and rushed at Sha Seng. Caught off guard, Sha Seng was seized in the demon's grip and dragged into the cave. The little demons bound Sha Seng hand and foot, trussing him up like a hobbled horse.

What it’s about
In the Yellow-Robe monster's cave the pilgrims' plight is eased by Princess Baihua Xiu, a daughter of the Precious-Elephant Kingdom stolen thirteen years before and forced to be the demon's wife. Pitying the captive monk, she frees Tripitaka in secret and sends him off with a letter begging her royal parents to rescue her.
Tripitaka carries the letter to the king, who implores the pilgrims to save his daughter, and Bajie and Sha go to challenge the demon at his cave. The fight goes badly: Sha is captured and Bajie flees into the grass, and the abduction the disciples could not prevent they now cannot undo either, deepening the case for recalling Wukong from his mountain.
When it was written 背景
This 回 develops the Yellow-Robe arc into a full court intrigue, with a stolen princess, a smuggled letter and a king's plea, and it is one of the novel's tenderer captivity stories. Learners should follow the letter as the thread that ties cave, palace and battle together. The mounting failures of Bajie and Sha are structural: the book is patiently demonstrating what the party has lost, so that Wukong's eventual return will feel earned rather than merely convenient.
