Tang Sanzang Is Captured by the Yellow Robe Demon
第028回Chapter 28
Now it is told that although the Great Sage had been driven away by Tang Seng, he still could not stop thinking of him and sighing over it; before long he caught sight of the Eastern Ocean, and said, "It has been five hundred years since I last traveled this road!" Then he saw the sea water:
That Pilgrim gave a leap and vaulted over the Eastern Ocean, and soon reached the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit. Lowering his cloud, he opened his eyes to look, and saw that on the mountain all the flowers and grass were gone, and the mist and clouds had utterly vanished;峰巖倒塌,林樹焦枯。the peaks and crags had collapsed, and the trees in the forest were scorched and withered. You may ask, how did this come to be? It was only because he had thrown Heaven's Palace into an uproar and been captured and taken up to the celestial realm, that this mountain had been set ablaze and ruined by the Illustrious Sage Erlang, who led the Seven Brothers of Plum Hill in burning it. The Great Sage grew doubly mournful. There is an old-style poem testifying to the ruined mountain and desolate scene. The old-style poem says:
Just as the Great Sage was in the midst of his grief, he suddenly heard, in front of the Fragrant Grass Slope and within the Creeping Bramble Hollow, a sound ring out, and seven or eight little monkeys leapt out, crowding forward together, surrounding him and kowtowing. They called out loudly, "Grandfather Great Sage, have you come home today?" The Handsome Monkey King said, "Why is it that none of you are playing or frolicking, but every one of you has hidden yourselves away, vanished without a trace? I have been here quite some time now, and have not seen a sign of any of you — why is that?" When the monkey troop heard this, one after another they wept and reported, "Ever since the Great Sage was captured and taken up to Heaven, we have suffered bitterly at the hands of hunters, truly unbearable hardship. How could we withstand their hard crossbows and strong bows, their yellow hawks and vicious dogs, their nets and snares, spears and hooks? For this reason each of us, cherishing our own lives, dared not show ourselves to play about, but only hid deep within our caves, keeping far away from our old nests and dens. When hungry we would steal grass and food before the slope, and when thirsty we would drink clear spring water from the ravine below. But just now, hearing Grandfather Great Sage's voice, we came especially to meet you, and humbly hope you will support and shelter us." When the Great Sage heard these words, he grew all the more mournful. He then asked, "How many of you are still left on this mountain?" The monkey troop said, "Old and young together, there are only about a thousand." The Great Sage said, "At that time I had altogether forty-seven thousand demon troops — where have they all gone now?" The monkey troop said, "Ever since Grandfather left, this mountain was set afire by the Bodhisattva Erlang, and more than half were burned to death. We crouched in wells, burrowed into ravines, and hid beneath the Iron Plank Bridge, and so managed to preserve our lives. By the time the fire died down and the smoke cleared and we came out again, there were no more flowers and fruit to sustain us, and it was hard to survive, so another half of us went off elsewhere. Of this remaining half of us, we have endured hardship living on in the mountain. 群猴道:「說起這獵戶,可恨!These past two years, hunters have again come and carried off half of us." Pilgrim said, "What did they carry you off for?" The monkey troop said, "Speaking of these hunters, it is truly hateful! Those of us struck by arrows and spears, or beaten to death by poison, they took away, skinned and boned, stewed in sauce, steamed in vinegar, fried in oil, and roasted with salt, to serve as food to go with their rice. And those caught in nets, or trapped in snares, taken alive, they made jump through hoops and perform tricks, turn somersaults, stand on their heads, and beat gongs and drums in the streets — there is nothing they were not made to do for entertainment."
When the Great Sage heard these words, he grew all the more furious, and said, "Who is in charge of affairs in the cave?" The demon troop said, "There are still the two marshals Ma and Liu, and the two generals Beng and Ba, who are in charge." The Great Sage said, "Go and report to them that I have come." Those little demons rushed in through the gate to report, "Grandfather Great Sage has come home." When Ma, Liu, Beng, and Ba heard the report, they hurried out the gate, kowtowed, and welcomed him into the cave. The Great Sage sat in the middle, and the assembled demons bowed in rows before him, saying, "Grandfather Great Sage, we recently heard that you had preserved your life and were escorting Tang Seng to the Western Heaven to fetch the scriptures — why have you not gone on to the west, but instead returned to your own mountain?" The Great Sage said, "My children, you do not know — that Tang Sanzang cannot tell worthy from unworthy: for his sake I captured demons and seized monsters all along the road, exhausting the skills of my whole lifetime, and time and again I beat and killed evil spirits;他說我行兇作惡,不要我做徒弟,把我逐趕回來,寫立貶書為照,永不聽用了。」yet he said I acted with violence and did evil, and would not have me as his disciple, and drove me away and sent me back here, writing out a letter of banishment as proof, that I should never again be employed by him."
The assembled monkeys clapped their hands and laughed loudly, saying, "What good fortune, what good fortune! Why be a monk at all? Just come home, and stay with us to have some fun for a few years." They cried, "Quickly prepare coconut wine to welcome Grandfather home!" The Great Sage said, "Do not drink wine yet — let me ask you, how often do those hunters come to our mountain?" Ma and Liu said, "Great Sage, no matter what the season, they come here every single day to make trouble." The Great Sage said, "Then why have they not come today?" Ma and Liu said, "Watch — they are likely coming any moment." The Great Sage instructed, "My children, go out and gather up for me all the scorched rubble and broken stones on the mountain, and pile them up. Pile them in heaps, some of twenty or thirty pieces, some of fifty or sixty, I have a use for them." Those little monkeys swarmed like a hive of bees, and each one scurried about gathering many such heaps. When the Great Sage had seen this, he told them, "My children, all of you go hide inside the cave, and let old Monkey work his magic."
The Great Sage climbed to the mountain peak to look, and saw that from the southern half there came the boom of drums and the clang of gongs, and over a thousand men and horses appeared, all bearing hawks and hounds, and carrying knives and spears. The Monkey King looked closely at these men coming with such fierce menace — fine fellows indeed, truly brave and valiant.
When the Great Sage saw these men spreading up onto his mountain, his heart filled with great rage; he formed a mudra with his fingers, murmured an incantation, and drew in a breath toward the southeast, then blew it out with a whoosh — and it became a raging wind.好風!What a wind!
The Great Sage raised this great wind, and the broken rubble and stones rode upon the wind, flying and dancing wildly about. Pity those over a thousand men and horses, every single one of them:
A poem says:
The Great Sage lowered his cloud, clapped his hands, and laughed loudly, saying, "What good fortune, what good fortune! Ever since I submitted to Tang Seng and became a monk, he has repeatedly admonished me with the saying: 'Do good for a thousand days, and the good may still not be enough;一日行惡,惡自有餘。』 do evil for a single day, and the evil is more than enough.' Truly there is such a saying. When I followed him and beat and killed a few demons, he blamed me for acting violently. Today, coming home, I have instead finished off all these many hunters." He called, "Children, come out!" The monkey troop, once the fierce wind had passed, heard the Great Sage calling, and one by one leapt out. The Great Sage said, "Go to the foot of the southern mountain, strip the clothes from those hunters who have been killed and bring them home, wash off the bloodstains, and wear them to keep out the cold;把死人的屍首都推在那萬丈深潭內;push the corpses of the dead men all into that bottomless deep pool;把死倒的馬拖將來,剝了皮,做靴穿,將肉醃著,慢慢的食用;drag back the horses that have fallen dead, skin them to make boots to wear, and salt the meat to eat little by little;把那些弓箭槍刀,與你們操演武藝;take those bows, arrows, spears, and knives to practice your martial skills with;將那雜色旗號,收來我用。」 and bring me those flags of various colors for my own use." The monkey troop each acknowledged the order.
The Great Sage took the flags apart and washed them, and stitched them all together into a single flag of mixed colors, upon which he wrote fourteen characters: "Rebuilding the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit, Restoring the Water-Curtain Cave, the Great Sage Equal to Heaven." He set up a pole and hung the flag outside the cave. Day after day he recruited demons and gathered beasts, stored grass and hoarded grain, and never again spoke the word "monk." His standing with others was great, and his skill still higher, so he went and borrowed sweet dew and immortal water from the Dragon Kings of the Four Seas, and washed the mountain green again. In front he planted elms and willows, behind he set pines and nanmu, and peaches, plums, jujubes, and plums — there was nothing lacking. Free and at ease, content in his work and settled in his home — of this we speak no further.
Now it is told that Tang Seng, having listened to his own willful nature, let loose the Monkey of the Mind, and mounted his saddle and horse. Bajie went ahead clearing the way, and Sha Seng carried the luggage as they traveled west. They passed White Tiger Ridge, and suddenly saw a stretch of woods and hills, truly a place where vines and creepers twined and coiled, and cypress and pine grew lush and green. Sanzang called out, "Disciples, the mountain road is rugged and very hard to travel, and now there is this dense cluster of pine forest, trees crowding thick and close — we must be very careful, for I fear there may be demons or evil beasts." Look at that fool, who braced himself up, told Sha Seng to lead the horse, and himself used his rake to clear the way, leading Tang Seng straight into the pine forest. Just as they were walking along, the elder reined in the horse and said, "Bajie, today I am truly hungry — where might we find some vegetarian food for me to eat?" Bajie said, "Master, please dismount, and wait here while old Hog goes to look." The elder dismounted, Sha Seng set down his load, took out the alms bowl, and handed it to Bajie. Bajie said, "I'm off, then." The elder asked, "Where are you going?" Bajie said, "Never mind — on this trip of mine, I'll bore through ice to fetch fire and seek out a meal, press through snow to beg oil and bring back food."
Watch him: he left the pine forest and walked west for over ten li, yet did not once come across a single household — truly a place with wolves and tigers but no trace of human habitation. That fool, worn out from walking, brooded to himself, "In the days when Pilgrim was around, whatever the old monk wanted, there it was;今日輪到我的身上,誠所謂『當家才知柴米價,養子方曉父娘恩』。now the task has fallen to me, and truly it is as the saying goes, 'Only when you keep house do you learn the price of firewood and rice; only when you raise children do you understand a parent's kindness.' It's simply not fair — there's nowhere to go begging." Then drowsiness came over him as he walked, and he thought, "If I go back right now and tell the old monk there's nowhere to beg food, he won't believe I've walked all this way. I had better while away another hour or so before I go back to report. Well then, well then, I'll just go lie down for a nap in this clump of grass." So the fool buried his head in the grass and lay down to sleep. At the time he only meant to doze a little and then get up; but who could have known that, worn out from walking, once he flopped down he only kept on snoring away.
Let us leave aside Bajie sleeping there for now. Now it is told that the elder, in the forest, felt his ears burn and his eyes twitch, and his body and mind grew uneasy. He hastily turned and called to Sha Seng, "Wuneng went to beg for food — why hasn't he come back all this while?" Sha Seng said, "Master, you still don't understand. He sees that in this western region there are many households that feed monks, and besides, his belly is big — what does he care about you? He'll wait until he's eaten his fill before coming back." Sanzang said, "Just so! If he is over there greedily enjoying his meal, however will we meet up with him again? It's getting late, and this is no place to stay the night — we must find lodging somewhere." Sha Seng said, "No matter, Master. You just sit here, and let me go find him." Sanzang said, "Yes, yes indeed. Whether or not there's food doesn't matter — finding lodging is what's urgent." Sha Seng grasped his treasure staff and went straight out of the pine forest to look for Bajie.
The elder sat alone in the forest, feeling utterly bored and weary, and could only force himself to rouse his spirits, spring to his feet, gather the luggage together in one place, and tie the horse to a tree. He took off the bamboo hat he wore, planted his tin staff firmly in the ground, straightened his black robe, and strolled slowly through the secluded forest, simply to dispel his boredom. The elder looked over all the wild grass and mountain flowers, and could not bear to hear the clamor of birds returning to roost. It happened that within this forest were places where the grass grew deep and the paths were narrow, and because his thoughts and feelings were in disorder, he took a wrong turning. His purpose in coming out was, first, to dispel his boredom, and second, to look for Bajie and Sha Seng. Little did he expect that those two had gone straight along the westward road, while the elder, after wandering about for a while, ended up walking toward the south. Emerging from the pine forest, he suddenly raised his head and saw, over on that side, a golden light flashing and shimmering, with radiant colored vapors rising up. Looking closely, he saw it was in fact a precious pagoda, its golden roof shining with light. This was the westering sun's light, shining upon the golden roof and making it gleam. He said, "This disciple of mine truly has no luck with such things. Ever since leaving the Land of the East, I have vowed that whenever I meet a temple I would burn incense, whenever I see a Buddha I would bow in worship, and whenever I come upon a pagoda I would sweep it clean. Is that shining light not from a pagoda of gold? How is it that I have never taken that road? Beneath the pagoda there must surely be a monastery, and within the monastery there must surely be monks — let me go and take a look. As for this luggage and the white horse, I doubt anyone will pass by this place, so there should be no trouble leaving them. If there is a convenient place there, I will wait for my disciples to come, and we can go together to ask for lodging."
The elder's luck had, for the moment, run out. Watch him: he strode forward and soon reached the side of the pagoda.
The elder stepped forward and had just reached beneath the pagoda gate when he saw a mottled bamboo curtain hanging within. He pushed his way through the gate, lifted the curtain, and went straight inside; suddenly raising his head, he saw upon a stone bed a demon lying asleep on its side. You ask what manner of appearance it had:
When the elder saw this creature's appearance, he was so terrified that he stumbled back a step, his whole body went weak and numb, both legs turned soft, and he hastily turned to flee. He had only just turned around when that demon, whose spiritual senses were truly sharp, opened wide a pair of golden, ghostly eyes and called out, "My children, look what's outside the door!" A little demon stuck out its head to look outside the door, saw it was a bald-headed elder, and hurried back in to report, "Great King, outside is a monk. Round-headed and broad-faced, with ears hanging down to his shoulders;嫩刮刮的一身肉,細嬌嬌的一張皮:且是好個和尚。」 tender, soft flesh all over his body, and a fine, delicate skin — truly a fine monk indeed." When the demon heard this, he laughed aloud, "This is what is called 'a fly landing on a snake's head' — food and clothing coming of their own accord! All you little ones, hurry after him and catch him for me, and I will reward you handsomely." Those little demons swarmed out like a hive of bees, all crowding forward together. When Sanzang saw them, though his heart was racing as if an arrow had been loosed, and his feet ran as if flying, still his heart trembled with fear, and his legs went weak and numb;況且是山路崎嶇,林深日暮,步兒那裡移得動:被那些小妖平擡將去。moreover the mountain road was rugged, the forest deep and the day growing dark — how could his steps carry him anywhere? He was lifted bodily off the ground by those little demons.正是:Indeed it is thus:
Watch how those little demons carried the elder off, set him down outside the bamboo curtain, and joyfully reported, "Great King, we have caught the monk and brought him in." That old demon also stole a glance at him, and saw that Sanzang's head rose straight up, with a dignified, imposing appearance — truly a fine monk indeed. He thought to himself, "Such a fine monk as this must surely be someone of importance from the upper realms, no ordinary matter. If I do not put on a show of authority, how will he ever consent to submit?" All at once he borrowed the tiger's might as the fox does, his red beard bristling upright, his blood-red hair standing on end toward the sky, his eyes seeming to burst apart, and he gave a great shout: "Bring that monk in!" The demons all answered together loudly, "Yes!" and shoved Sanzang straight inside. This is a case of "once beneath another's low eaves, how dare one not bow one's head." Sanzang could only press his hands together and offer him a bow of greeting. That demon said, "What monk are you, and from where? Where have you come from? Where are you going? Speak quickly and clearly!" Sanzang said, "I am originally a monk of the Tang court, and by the decree of the great Tang Emperor I am journeying to the Western Heaven to seek the sacred scriptures and verses. Passing by your honored mountain, I came especially to the pagoda to pay my respects to its holy presence; I did not expect to disturb your awesome dignity, and I beg you to forgive my offense. Once I have obtained the scriptures from the Western Heaven and returned to the Land of the East, my name shall be recorded there forever." When the demon heard this, he laughed heartily, "I said you must be someone from the superior lands, and indeed it is you.正要吃你哩,卻來的甚好,甚好,不然,卻不錯放過了?I was just about to eat you, and here you come of your own accord — how very fortunate, how very fortunate! Otherwise, would I not have let you slip past by mistake? You are destined to be food in my mouth, and so naturally you have come stumbling right to me — even if I wanted to let you go, you could not get away; even if you tried to run, you could not escape!" He called to the little demons: "Take this monk and tie him up." Sure enough, those little demons swarmed forward, bound the elder hand and foot with rope and cord, and tied him to the soul-fixing stake.
The old demon, holding his blade, asked again, "Monk, how many are there in your party? Surely you would not dare climb to the Western Heaven all alone?" When Sanzang saw him holding the blade, he honestly answered, "Great King, I have two disciples, called Zhu Bajie and Sha Monk, who have both gone into the pine forest to beg for food. There is also a load of luggage and a white horse, both left there in the pine forest." The old demon said, "What good fortune again! The two disciples, together with you that makes three, together with the horse that makes four — that will be enough for one meal." The little demon said, "Let's go catch him." The old demon said, "Don't go out — shut the front gate. When those two come back from begging for alms, they are sure to go looking for their master to eat;尋不著,一定尋著我門上。and if they can't find him, they'll surely come looking as far as my door. As the saying goes: 'Business that comes to your own door is easy to do.' Let's wait and catch him at our leisure." The little demons shut the front gate.
For now, let us not speak of Sanzang's encounter with disaster. Instead, let us tell of Sha Seng, who went out of the forest to look for Bajie, and went on for a good ten-odd li without seeing any village. He was standing on a high rise looking about, when he suddenly heard someone talking amid the grass; hastily he used his staff to part the deep grass and look, and it turned out to be the idiot lying there, talking in his sleep. Sha Seng grabbed him by the ear, and only then did he wake him. He said, "What a fine idiot you are! Master sent you to beg for food — did he give you leave to sleep here?" The idiot woke up in a fluster and said, "Brother, what time is it?" Sha Seng said, "Get up quickly! Master said whether or not there's food hardly matters — he told the two of us to go find a place to lodge."
The idiot, still muddled and half-asleep, held up his begging bowl and gripped his rake, and went straight back with Sha Seng. When they reached the forest and looked, their master was nowhere to be found. Sha Seng complained, "It's all because you, you idiot, didn't come back with alms in time — there must be some demon that's taken Master." Bajie laughed and said, "Brother, don't talk nonsense. That forest is such a quiet, elegant spot — there's certainly no demon there. I imagine the old monk couldn't sit still and went off somewhere to view the scenery. Let's go and find him." The two of them had no choice but to lead the horse and shoulder the load, gather up the cloak and the tin staff, and go out of the pine forest to search for their master.
This time too, it was that Tang Seng was not fated to die. The two of them searched a while without finding him, when suddenly they saw a golden light glinting due south. Bajie said, "Brother, ah, the fortunate are simply fortunate — look, Master has gone off to someone's house. That radiant thing is a jeweled pagoda — who would dare be careless with him there? They're sure to lay out a vegetarian meal and keep him there to enjoy it. Shouldn't we hurry along too, and catch up in time for some of that food ourselves?" Sha Seng said, "Brother, ah, there's no telling yet whether it's fortune or misfortune — let's go and have a look first."
二人雄糾糾的到了門前:「呀!The two of them strode boldly up to the gate: "Ah! It's shut." They saw a slab of white jade set crosswise on the gate, engraved with six large characters: "Wanzi Shan Boyue Dong." Sha Seng said, "Brother, ah, this is no temple — it's a demon's cave lair. If our master is in there, we may not even get to see him." Bajie said, "Brother, don't be afraid. 那獃子舉著鈀,上前高叫:「開門!Just tether the horse and watch over the luggage, and let me go ask after his news." The idiot raised his rake, stepped forward, and shouted loudly, "Open the door! Open the door!" The little demon guarding the gate inside the cave opened it, and upon suddenly seeing the looks of the two of them, hastily drew back and ran inside to report, "Great King, business has come." The old demon said, "What business?" The little demon said, "Outside the cave gate there's a monk with a long snout and big ears, and a monk with a dark, ill-omened look, come calling at the door." The old demon was overjoyed and said, "It's Zhu Bajie and Sha Seng, come searching for me. Well now, so he really can track me down — how did he manage to find his way right to my door? Since their faces look so fierce and unruly, we mustn't be careless with them." He called out, "Bring my armor!" The little demons carried it over, and he strapped it on at once, snatched up his blade, and went straight out the gate.
Now to tell of Bajie and Sha Seng, who were waiting right there before the gate, when they saw the demon emerge looking fierce and dangerous. Would you like to know how he was dressed?
That Yellow-Robed Old Demon came out through the gate and asked, "Where are you monks from, shouting at my door?" Bajie said, "My son, don't you recognize me? I am your granddad! I am one sent by the Great Tang to go to the Western Heaven. My master is that Imperial Brother, Sanzang. If he's inside your house, hand him out at once and spare me the trouble of smashing my way in with this rake." The demon laughed and said, "Yes, yes, yes, there is a Tang monk at my place, and I haven't been careless with him either — I've prepared some human-flesh buns for him to eat.你們也進去吃一個兒,何如?」Why don't you two come in and have one as well — how about it?"
This idiot actually took it seriously and was about to go in. Sha Seng grabbed hold of him and said, "Brother, he's fooling you — since when do you eat human flesh?" Only then did the idiot come to his senses; he drew his rake and struck straight at the demon's face;那怪物側身躲過,使鋼刀急架相迎。the monster turned sideways to dodge it, and swung his steel blade up to block and meet him. Both of them showed their magic powers, mounted the clouds, and leapt into the air to fight. Sha Seng abandoned the luggage and the white horse, raised his treasure staff, and rushed in to join the attack. At that moment, the two fierce monks and the one savage demon were there amid the clouds — what a fine battle this was! Truly it was just as this:
The three of them went back and forth in midair, fighting through several dozen rounds, with neither side gaining the upper hand. Each fighting for dear life, it was truly impossible to tell them apart or bring it to an end.
In the end, we do not know how Tang Seng was to be saved — listen to the next chapter's explanation.

What it’s about
Home again at Flower-Fruit Mountain, Wukong finds his monkeys scattered and half-slaughtered by hunters, gathers the survivors, and takes fierce revenge, resuming for a while the life of a mountain king. But he cannot forget the pilgrimage, and the chapter keeps his exile in view even as the westward road goes on without him.
The pilgrims press into the Black-Pine Forest, where Tripitaka, having sent Bajie and Sha off to beg food, wanders alone and is seized by the Yellow-Robe monster of Bowl-Mountain. Bajie and Sha come to fight but prove no match for the demon, and without Wukong the party is suddenly helpless before exactly the kind of ordinary abduction he used to end in a single page.
When it was written 背景
This 回 shows the cost of the banishment by cutting between Wukong's return to savagery and the pilgrims' first real failure without him. The Yellow-Robe monster opens a multi-chapter arc that will eventually force the Monkey King's recall. Learners should watch the deliberate contrast the novel builds, the disciples cannot manage even one demon alone, and note that the story is using his absence to argue for the necessity of the very disciple it has just sent away.
