卻說三藏師徒次日天明收拾前進，那鎮元子與行者結為兄弟，兩人情投意合，決不肯放，又安排管待，一連住了五六日。The next morning at dawn, Sanzang and his disciples packed up and set out again; Zhenyuanzi and Wukong, having sworn brotherhood, were so like-minded and close in spirit that he simply would not let them go, and arranged more feasts and hospitality, so that they stayed on for another five or six days.那長老自服了草還丹，真似脫胎換骨，神爽體健。Ever since the old monk had eaten the life-restoring elixir grass, he truly seemed reborn with a new frame, his spirit fresh and his body vigorous.他取經心重，那裡肯淹留，無已，遂行。But his heart was set on fetching the scriptures, and he could not bear to linger any longer; there was nothing for it but to set off.

却说三藏师徒次日天明收拾前进，那镇元子与行者结为兄弟，两人情投意合，决不肯放，又安排管待，一连住了五六日。那长老自服了草还丹，真似脱胎换骨，神爽体健。他取经心重，那里肯淹留，无已，遂行。

師徒別了上路，早見一座高山。Master and disciples took their leave and set out on the road, and before long they saw a lofty mountain ahead.三藏道：「徒弟，前面有山險峻，恐馬不能前，大家須仔細仔細。」行者道：「師父放心，我等自然理會。」好猴王，他在馬前橫擔著棒，剖開山路，上了高崖，看不盡：Sanzang said, "Disciples, there is a steep and dangerous mountain ahead; I fear the horse cannot go forward — everyone must be careful, careful." Wukong said, "Set your mind at ease, Master, we will naturally manage it." The fine Monkey King held his cudgel athwart before the horse, hacked open a path through the mountain, and climbed the high cliff, taking in a sight that could not be exhausted by looking:

师徒别了上路，早见一座高山。三藏道：「徒弟，前面有山险峻，恐马不能前，大家须仔细仔细。」行者道：「师父放心，我等自然理会。」好猴王，他在马前横担著棒，剖开山路，上了高崖，看不尽：

那長老馬上心驚。On horseback, the old monk's heart was struck with fear.孫大聖佈施手段，舞著鐵棒，哮吼一聲，諕得那狼蟲顛竄，虎豹奔逃。Great Sage Sun displayed his powers, wielding his iron cudgel and giving a single roaring shout, so that the wolves and beasts fled in confusion and the tigers and leopards ran off in terror.

那长老马上心惊。孙大圣布施手段，舞著铁棒，哮吼一声，諕得那狼虫颠窜，虎豹奔逃。

師徒們入此山，正行到嵯峨之處，三藏道：「悟空，我這一日，肚中饑了，你去那裡化些齋吃。」行者陪笑道：「師父好不聰明。Master and disciples entered this mountain, and just as they reached a place of towering crags, Sanzang said, "Wukong, today I am hungry; go somewhere and beg some vegetarian food for me to eat." Wukong said with a smile, "Master, how is it you are not very clever.這等半山之中，前不巴村，後不著店，有錢也沒買處，教往那裡尋齋？」三藏心中不快，口裡罵道：「你這猴子！Here in the middle of the mountains, with no village ahead and no inn behind, even with money there is nowhere to buy — where am I to go looking for food?" Sanzang was displeased at heart and scolded, "You monkey!想你在兩界山，被如來壓在石匣之內，口能言，足不能行，也虧我救你性命，摩頂受戒，做了我的徒弟。Remember how at the Mountain of Two Frontiers you were pinned beneath the Buddha inside a stone casket, able to speak with your mouth but unable to walk with your feet — it was thanks to me that I saved your life, touched your crown, and gave you the precepts, making you my disciple.怎麼不肯努力，常懷懶惰之心？」行者道：「弟子亦頗慇懃，何嘗懶惰？」三藏道：「你既慇懃，何不化齋我吃？How is it you are unwilling to exert yourself, and always harbor a lazy heart?" Wukong said, "Your disciple is quite diligent — when have I ever been lazy?" Sanzang said, "If you are so diligent, why not beg some food for me to eat?我肚饑怎行？How am I to travel with an empty stomach?況此地山嵐瘴氣，怎麼得上雷音？」行者道：「師父休怪，少要言語。Moreover, this place is thick with mountain mists and miasma — how am I to reach the Thunderclap?" Wukong said, "Master, do not blame me, and say no more of this.我知你尊性高傲，十分違慢了你，便要念那話兒咒。I know your reverence's nature is proud, and if I offend you too greatly, you will recite that spell.你下馬穩坐，等我尋那裡有人家處化齋去。」Dismount and sit steady, and wait while I go find some place with people, to beg food."

师徒们入此山，正行到嵯峨之处，三藏道：「悟空，我这一日，肚中饥了，你去那里化些斋吃。」行者陪笑道：「师父好不聪明。这等半山之中，前不巴村，后不著店，有钱也没买处，教往那里寻斋？」三藏心中不快，口里骂道：「你这猴子！想你在两界山，被如来压在石匣之内，口能言，足不能行，也亏我救你性命，摩顶受戒，做了我的徒弟。怎么不肯努力，常怀懒惰之心？」行者道：「弟子亦颇慇懃，何尝懒惰？」三藏道：「你既慇懃，何不化斋我吃？我肚饥怎行？况此地山岚瘴气，怎么得上雷音？」行者道：「师父休怪，少要言语。我知你尊性高傲，十分违慢了你，便要念那话儿咒。你下马稳坐，等我寻那里有人家处化斋去。」

行者將身一縱，跳上雲端裡，手搭涼篷，睜眼觀看。Wukong gave his body a leap and sprang up into the clouds, shading his eyes with his hand and gazing about with wide-open eyes.可憐西方路甚是寂寞，更無莊堡人家，正是多逢樹木，少見人煙去處。Alas, the road to the West was utterly desolate, with no villages or dwellings anywhere — truly a place where trees abounded and human habitation was scarce.看多時，只見正南上有一座高山，那山向陽處，有一片鮮紅的點子。After gazing for a long while, he saw due south a lofty mountain, and on its sunlit slope there was a patch of bright red dots.行者按下雲頭道：「師父，有吃的了。」那長老問甚東西。Wukong brought his cloud down and said, "Master, there is something to eat." The old monk asked what it was.行者道：「這裡沒人家化飯，那南山有一片紅的，想必是熟透了的山桃，我去摘幾個來你充饑。」三藏喜道：「出家人若有桃子吃，就為上分了。」行者取了缽盂，縱起祥光，你看他觔斗幌幌，冷氣颼颼，須臾間，奔南山摘桃不題。Wukong said, "There are no households here to beg a meal from, but that patch of red on the southern mountain must be fully ripened mountain peaches; I will go pick a few to satisfy your hunger." Sanzang said happily, "For one who has left the household to have peaches to eat would be a blessing indeed." Wukong took up his alms bowl, rose on an auspicious beam of light, and off he went — watch him somersault along, shimmering and shimmering, with cold air whistling by, and in but a moment he had sped to the southern mountain to pick peaches; we shall speak no more of that for now.

行者将身一纵，跳上云端里，手搭凉篷，睁眼观看。可怜西方路甚是寂寞，更无庄堡人家，正是多逢树木，少见人烟去处。看多时，只见正南上有一座高山，那山向阳处，有一片鲜红的点子。行者按下云头道：「师父，有吃的了。」那长老问甚东西。行者道：「这里没人家化饭，那南山有一片红的，想必是熟透了的山桃，我去摘几个来你充饥。」三藏喜道：「出家人若有桃子吃，就为上分了。」行者取了钵盂，纵起祥光，你看他觔斗幌幌，冷气飕飕，须臾间，奔南山摘桃不题。

卻說常言有云：「山高必有怪，嶺峻卻生精。」果然這山上有一個妖精，孫大聖去時，驚動那怪。Now it is said, as the common saying goes: "Where the mountain is high, there must be monsters; where the ridge is steep, spirits are born." Sure enough, on this mountain there was a demon, and when Great Sage Sun went off, he disturbed that fiend.他在雲端裡踏著陰風，看見長老坐在地下，就不勝歡喜道：「造化，造化。Riding the dark wind up in the clouds, she saw the old monk sitting on the ground, and was overjoyed beyond measure, saying, "What luck, what luck.幾年家人都講東土的唐和尚取大乘，他本是金蟬子化身，十世修行的原體，有人吃他一塊肉，長壽長生。For years now people have all been saying that the Tang monk from the Land of the East is going to fetch the Great Vehicle scriptures — he is in truth the incarnation of Master Golden Cicada, the very body of one who has cultivated through ten lifetimes; whoever eats a piece of his flesh will gain long life and eternal youth.真個今日到了。」那妖精上前就要拿他，只見長老左右手下有兩員大將護持，不敢攏身。And truly, today he has arrived." The demon stepped forward meaning to seize him at once, but saw that to the old monk's left and right stood two great generals guarding him, and dared not approach.他說兩員大將是誰？Who, you ask, were these two great generals?說是八戒、沙僧。They were, in fact, Bajie and Sha Monk.八戒、沙僧雖沒甚麼大本事，然八戒是天蓬元帥，沙僧是捲簾大將，他的威氣尚不曾泄，故不敢攏身。Though Bajie and Sha Monk had no very great powers, still Bajie was once Marshal Tianpeng, and Sha Monk was once the Curtain-Raising General, and their martial aura had not yet entirely dissipated — hence she dared not approach.妖精說：「等我且戲他戲，看怎麼說。」The demon said, "Let me first toy with him a while and see what he says."

却说常言有云：「山高必有怪，岭峻却生精。」果然这山上有一个妖精，孙大圣去时，惊动那怪。他在云端里踏著阴风，看见长老坐在地下，就不胜欢喜道：「造化，造化。几年家人都讲东土的唐和尚取大乘，他本是金蝉子化身，十世修行的原体，有人吃他一块肉，长寿长生。真个今日到了。」那妖精上前就要拿他，只见长老左右手下有两员大将护持，不敢拢身。他说两员大将是谁？说是八戒、沙僧。八戒、沙僧虽没甚么大本事，然八戒是天蓬元帅，沙僧是卷帘大将，他的威气尚不曾泄，故不敢拢身。妖精说：「等我且戏他戏，看怎么说。」

好妖精，停下陰風，在那山凹裡搖身一變，變做個月貌花容的女兒，說不盡那眉清目秀，齒白唇紅。The fine demon stilled the dark wind, and there in a mountain hollow shook herself and transformed into a girl of moon-like face and flower-like beauty, whose clear brows and bright eyes, white teeth and red lips, were beyond all describing.左手提著一個青砂罐兒，右手提著一個綠磁瓶兒，從西向東，徑奔唐僧：In her left hand she held a blue clay jar, in her right hand a green porcelain vase, and from the west heading east she made straight for Tang Seng:

好妖精，停下阴风，在那山凹里摇身一变，变做个月貌花容的女儿，说不尽那眉清目秀，齿白唇红。左手提著一个青砂罐儿，右手提著一个绿磁瓶儿，从西向东，径奔唐僧：

三藏見了，叫：「八戒、沙僧，悟空才說這裡曠野無人，你看那裡不走出一個人來了？」八戒道：「師父，你與沙僧坐著，等老豬去看看來。」When Sanzang saw her, he called out, "Bajie, Sha Seng, Wukong just said this place was a wild waste with no people about — look, isn't that someone walking out over there?" Bajie said, "Master, you and Sha Seng sit here, and let old Hog go take a look."

三藏见了，叫：「八戒、沙僧，悟空才说这里旷野无人，你看那里不走出一个人来了？」八戒道：「师父，你与沙僧坐著，等老猪去看看来。」

那獃子放下釘鈀，整整直裰，擺擺搖搖，充作個斯文氣象，一直的靦面相迎。The fool set down his rake, straightened his robe, and swaying and swaggering, put on an air of refinement, going straight up to meet her face to face.真個是遠看未實，近看分明，那女子生得：Truly, seen from afar she seemed unreal, but seen up close she was quite distinct — this girl was born with:

那呆子放下钉钯，整整直裰，摆摆摇摇，充作个斯文气象，一直的腼面相迎。真个是远看未实，近看分明，那女子生得：

那八戒見他生得俊俏，獃子就動了凡心，忍不住胡言亂語，叫道：「女菩薩，往那裡去？Seeing how pretty and charming she was, Bajie's worldly heart stirred, and unable to restrain himself he began babbling nonsense, calling out, "Bodhisattva girl, where are you off to?手裡提著是甚麼東西？」分明是個妖怪，他卻不能認得。What is it you're carrying in your hands?" Clearly she was a demon, yet he could not recognize her as such.那女子連聲答應道：「長老，我這青罐裡是香米飯，綠瓶裡是炒麵筋。The girl answered at once, saying, "Elder, in this blue jar is fragrant rice, and in the green vase is fried wheat gluten.特來此處無他故，因還誓願要齋僧。」八戒聞言，滿心歡喜，急抽身，就跑了個豬顛風，報與三藏道：「師父，『吉人自有天報』，師父餓了，教師兄去化齋，那猴子不知那裡摘桃兒耍子去了。I have come here for no other reason than to fulfill a vow, to offer a vegetarian meal to monks." Hearing this, Bajie was filled with delight, and hastily turned and ran off in a pig's mad gallop, reporting to Sanzang, "Master, 'good fortune comes of itself to the good-hearted' — Master, you were hungry and sent Elder Brother to beg food, but that monkey has gone off somewhere to play at picking peaches, who knows where.桃子吃多了，也有些嘈人，又有些下墜。Eating too many peaches also upsets the stomach a bit, and gives one a certain looseness below.你看那不是個齋僧的來了？」唐僧不信道：「你這個夯貨胡纏。Look, isn't that someone coming to offer a monk's meal?" Tang Seng did not believe it, saying, "You great lump, stop talking nonsense.我們走了這向，好人也不曾遇著一個，齋僧的從何而來！」八戒道：「師父，這不到了？」We have walked this whole stretch and have not met so much as one good person — where would someone offering food to monks come from!" Bajie said, "Master, hasn't she arrived already?"

那八戒见他生得俊俏，呆子就动了凡心，忍不住胡言乱语，叫道：「女菩萨，往那里去？手里提著是甚么东西？」分明是个妖怪，他却不能认得。那女子连声答应道：「长老，我这青罐里是香米饭，绿瓶里是炒面筋。特来此处无他故，因还誓愿要斋僧。」八戒闻言，满心欢喜，急抽身，就跑了个猪颠风，报与三藏道：「师父，『吉人自有天报』，师父饿了，教师兄去化斋，那猴子不知那里摘桃儿耍子去了。桃子吃多了，也有些嘈人，又有些下坠。你看那不是个斋僧的来了？」唐僧不信道：「你这个夯货胡缠。我们走了这向，好人也不曾遇著一个，斋僧的从何而来！」八戒道：「师父，这不到了？」

三藏一見，連忙跳起身來，合掌當胸道：「女菩薩，你府上在何處住？Seeing her, Sanzang hastily leapt to his feet, pressed his palms together before his chest, and said, "Bodhisattva girl, where is your honored home?是甚人家？What family are you from?有甚願心，來此齋僧？」分明是個妖精，那長老也不認得。What vow have you made, that you come here to feed monks?" Clearly she was a demon, yet the old monk did not recognize her either.那妖精見唐僧問他來歷，他立地就起個虛情，花言巧語，來賺哄道：「師父，此山叫做蛇回獸怕的白虎嶺，正西下面是我家。Seeing that Tang Seng was asking about her background, the demon at once fabricated a false tale, and with flowery, cunning words set out to deceive him, saying, "Master, this mountain is called White Tiger Ridge, so fearsome that snakes turn back and beasts tremble, and just to the west below it is my home.我父母在堂，看經好善，廣齋方上遠近僧人。My parents are living, and being fond of reading scriptures and doing good works, they generously feed monks from near and far.只因無子，求神作福，生了奴奴。But because they had no son, they prayed to the gods and performed good works, and I, their unworthy daughter, was born.欲扳門第，配嫁他人，又恐老來無倚，只得將奴招了一個女婿，養老送終。」三藏聞言道：「女菩薩，你語言差了。Wishing to raise the family's standing, they meant to marry me off to another family, but fearing they would have no one to depend on in old age, they had no choice but to take in a son-in-law for me, to support them in old age and see to their last rites." Hearing this, Sanzang said, "Bodhisattva girl, your words are mistaken.聖經云：『父母在，不遠遊，遊必有方。』你既有父母在堂，又與你招了女婿，有願心，教你男子還，便也罷，怎麼自家在山行走？The sacred scriptures say: 'While one's parents are alive, one should not travel far; if one travels, one must have a fixed destination.' Since your parents are alive, and you already have a son-in-law taken in for you, it would have been proper enough for you, having made this vow, to have your husband come in your stead — why are you walking about the mountains yourself?又沒個侍兒隨從。And moreover without even a maidservant in attendance.這個是不遵婦道了。」那女子笑吟吟，忙陪俏語道：「師父，我丈夫在山北凹裡，帶幾個客子鋤田。This is a failure to observe a wife's proper conduct." The girl, smiling sweetly, hastened to offer a charming excuse, "Master, my husband is in a hollow north of the mountain, leading some hired hands in plowing the fields.這是奴奴煮的午飯，送與那些人吃的。This is the noon meal I, your unworthy servant, have cooked, being sent to those people to eat.只為五黃六月，無人使喚，父母又年老，所以親身來送。It is only because in this scorching fifth and sixth month there is no one else to send, and my parents are also elderly, that I have come to deliver it myself.忽遇三位遠來，卻思父母好善，故將此飯齋僧，如不棄嫌，願表芹獻。」三藏道：「善哉！Happening to meet you three travelers from afar, and thinking of how my parents love to do good, I therefore decided to offer this meal to you monks; if you do not disdain it, I hope you will accept this humble offering." Sanzang said, "Excellent!善哉！Excellent!我有徒弟摘果子去了，就來。I have a disciple gone to pick fruit, who will be back presently.我不敢吃，假如我和尚吃了你飯，你丈夫曉得，罵你，卻不罪坐貧僧也？」那女子見唐僧不肯吃，卻又滿面春生道：「師父啊，我父母齋僧，還是小可；I dare not eat it — for if I, a monk, were to eat your food, and your husband learned of it and scolded you, would that not bring blame upon this poor monk?" Seeing that Tang Seng would not eat, the girl's face bloomed all the more with spring-like warmth, and she said, "Ah, Master, my parents' feeding of monks is but a small matter;我丈夫更是個善人，一生好的是修橋補路，愛老憐貧。my husband is an even better man, and all his life has loved building bridges and mending roads, cherishing the old and pitying the poor.但聽見說這飯送與師父吃了，他與我夫妻情上，比尋常更是不同。」三藏也只是不吃。But if he hears that this meal was given to you, Master, to eat, in the affection between him and me as husband and wife, it will mean all the more to him, more than an ordinary thing." Yet Sanzang still would not eat.

三藏一见，连忙跳起身来，合掌当胸道：「女菩萨，你府上在何处住？是甚人家？有甚愿心，来此斋僧？」分明是个妖精，那长老也不认得。那妖精见唐僧问他来历，他立地就起个虚情，花言巧语，来赚哄道：「师父，此山叫做蛇回兽怕的白虎岭，正西下面是我家。我父母在堂，看经好善，广斋方上远近僧人。只因无子，求神作福，生了奴奴。欲扳门第，配嫁他人，又恐老来无倚，只得将奴招了一个女婿，养老送终。」三藏闻言道：「女菩萨，你语言差了。圣经云：『父母在，不远游，游必有方。』你既有父母在堂，又与你招了女婿，有愿心，教你男子还，便也罢，怎么自家在山行走？又没个侍儿随从。这个是不遵妇道了。」那女子笑吟吟，忙陪俏语道：「师父，我丈夫在山北凹里，带几个客子锄田。这是奴奴煮的午饭，送与那些人吃的。只为五黄六月，无人使唤，父母又年老，所以亲身来送。忽遇三位远来，却思父母好善，故将此饭斋僧，如不弃嫌，愿表芹献。」三藏道：「善哉！善哉！我有徒弟摘果子去了，就来。我不敢吃，假如我和尚吃了你饭，你丈夫晓得，骂你，却不罪坐贫僧也？」那女子见唐僧不肯吃，却又满面春生道：「师父啊，我父母斋僧，还是小可；我丈夫更是个善人，一生好的是修桥补路，爱老怜贫。但听见说这饭送与师父吃了，他与我夫妻情上，比寻常更是不同。」三藏也只是不吃。

旁邊卻惱壞了八戒，那獃子努著嘴，口裡埋怨道：「天下和尚也無數，不曾像我這個老和尚罷軟。Standing to the side, Bajie was thoroughly vexed by this, and the fool, pouting his lips, grumbled under his breath, "Of all the monks under heaven, none is as feeble and soft as this old monk of mine.現成的飯，三分兒倒不吃，只等那猴子來，做四分才吃。」他不容分說，一嘴把個罐子拱倒，就要動口。Here is food ready at hand, and he won't even eat his third share of it, but insists on waiting for that monkey to come, to divide it into four before eating." Without waiting for anyone's leave, he gave the jar a shove with his snout and knocked it over, and was about to start eating.只見那行者自南山頂上摘了幾個桃子，托著缽盂，一觔斗，點將回來，睜火眼金睛觀看，認得那女子是個妖精，放下缽盂，掣鐵棒，當頭就打。Just then Wukong, having picked several peaches atop the southern mountain, came somersaulting back carrying his alms bowl, and opening his fiery golden eyes to look, he recognized the girl as a demon; he set down the bowl, drew out his iron cudgel, and struck straight at her head.諕得個長老用手扯住道：「悟空，你走將來打誰？」行者道：「師父，你面前這個女子，莫當做個好人，他是個妖精，要來騙你哩。」三藏道：「你這個猴頭，當時倒也有些眼力，今日如何亂道？The old monk, terrified, grabbed hold of him with his hand, saying, "Wukong, who are you rushing over to strike?" Wukong said, "Master, do not take this girl before you for a good person — she is a demon, come to deceive you." Sanzang said, "You monkey-head, at times you have shown some discernment — how is it you talk such nonsense today?這女菩薩有此善心，將這飯要齋我等，你怎麼說他是個妖精？」行者笑道：「師父，你那裡認得。This bodhisattva girl has such a good heart, bringing this meal to feed us — how can you say she is a demon?" Wukong said with a laugh, "Master, how would you know.老孫在水簾洞裡做妖魔時，若想人肉吃，便是這等：或變金銀，或變莊臺，或變醉人，或變女色。When old Monkey was a demon king myself in the Water Curtain Cave, whenever I wanted to eat human flesh, this is just how I would do it: I would transform into gold and silver, or into a manor house, or into a drunken man, or into a beautiful woman.有那等痴心的愛上我，我就迷他到洞裡，盡意隨心，或蒸或煮受用；Whoever was foolish-hearted enough to fall in love with me, I would lure into the cave, and there, to my heart's content, either steam or boil them for my own enjoyment;吃不了，還要曬乾了防天陰哩。and what I could not finish eating, I would dry in the sun to keep against a rainy day.師父，我若來遲，你定入他套子，遭他毒手。」那唐僧那裡肯信，只說是個好人。Master, if I had come back late, you would surely have fallen into her trap and suffered at her poisonous hands." But Tang Seng simply would not believe it, insisting she was a good person.行者道：「師父，我知道你了，你見他那等容貌，必然動了凡心。Wukong said, "Master, now I understand you — seeing her looks like that, your worldly heart must have stirred.若果有此意，叫八戒伐幾棵樹來，沙僧尋些草來，我做木匠，就在這裡搭個窩鋪，你與他圓房成事，我們大家散了，卻不是件事業？If that is indeed your wish, tell Bajie to cut down a few trees and Sha Seng to gather some grass, and I will play the carpenter and put up a little hut right here, so you and she can complete the marriage rite, and we can all go our separate ways — wouldn't that settle the matter?何必又跋涉，取甚經去？」那長老原是個軟善的人，那裡吃得他這句言語，羞得光頭徹耳通紅。Why bother trudging on to fetch any scriptures?" The old monk, being by nature a soft and gentle man, could not bear these words, and his bald head flushed crimson with shame all the way to his ears.

旁边却恼坏了八戒，那呆子努著嘴，口里埋怨道：「天下和尚也无数，不曾像我这个老和尚罢软。现成的饭，三分儿倒不吃，只等那猴子来，做四分才吃。」他不容分说，一嘴把个罐子拱倒，就要动口。只见那行者自南山顶上摘了几个桃子，托著钵盂，一觔斗，点将回来，睁火眼金睛观看，认得那女子是个妖精，放下钵盂，掣铁棒，当头就打。諕得个长老用手扯住道：「悟空，你走将来打谁？」行者道：「师父，你面前这个女子，莫当做个好人，他是个妖精，要来骗你哩。」三藏道：「你这个猴头，当时倒也有些眼力，今日如何乱道？这女菩萨有此善心，将这饭要斋我等，你怎么说他是个妖精？」行者笑道：「师父，你那里认得。老孙在水帘洞里做妖魔时，若想人肉吃，便是这等：或变金银，或变庄台，或变醉人，或变女色。有那等痴心的爱上我，我就迷他到洞里，尽意随心，或蒸或煮受用；吃不了，还要晒干了防天阴哩。师父，我若来迟，你定入他套子，遭他毒手。」那唐僧那里肯信，只说是个好人。行者道：「师父，我知道你了，你见他那等容貌，必然动了凡心。若果有此意，叫八戒伐几棵树来，沙僧寻些草来，我做木匠，就在这里搭个窝铺，你与他圆房成事，我们大家散了，却不是件事业？何必又跋涉，取甚经去？」那长老原是个软善的人，那里吃得他这句言语，羞得光头彻耳通红。

三藏正在此羞慚，行者又發起性來，掣鐵棒，望妖精劈臉一下。Just as Sanzang stood there mortified, Wukong flared up again in temper, drew his iron cudgel, and struck straight at the demon's face.那怪物有些手段，使個「解屍法」，見行者棍子來時，他卻抖擻精神，預先走了，把一個假屍首打死在地下。That monster had some skill of her own, and used a technique of "casting off the corpse": seeing Wukong's cudgel coming, she braced herself and slipped away beforehand, leaving a false corpse to be struck dead on the ground.諕得個長老戰戰兢兢，口中作念道：「這猴著然無禮，屢勸不從，無故傷人性命。」行者道：「師父莫怪，你且來看看這罐子裡是甚東西？」沙僧攙著長老，近前看時，那裡是甚香米飯，卻是一罐子拖尾巴的長蛆；The old monk, terrified and trembling, muttered, "This monkey is truly outrageous — again and again I warn him and he will not listen, killing a person for no reason." Wukong said, "Master, do not blame me — come look and see what is in this jar." Sha Seng helped the old monk over to look, and it turned out to be no fragrant rice at all, but a jarful of long maggots with wriggling tails;也不是麵觔，卻是幾個青蛙、癩蝦蟆，滿地亂跳。nor was it wheat gluten, but several green frogs and warty toads, hopping madly all over the ground.長老才有三分兒信了。The old monk was now thirty percent convinced.怎禁豬八戒氣不忿，在傍漏八分兒唆嘴道：「師父，說起這個女子，他是此間農婦，因為送飯下田，路遇我等，卻怎麼栽他是個妖怪？But how could Zhu Bajie restrain his indignation — standing by, he let slip his own eighty percent's worth of instigation, saying, "Master, speaking of this girl, she was a farm woman from around here, who happened to meet us on her way to bring food to the fields — how can you accuse her of being a demon?哥哥的棍重，走將來試手打他一下，不期就打殺了。Elder Brother's cudgel is heavy, and he came over just to test his hand by striking her once, never expecting it would actually kill her.怕你念甚麼緊箍兒咒，故意的使個障眼法兒，變做這等樣東西，演幌你眼，使不念咒哩。」Fearing you would recite the tight-fillet spell, he deliberately used some eye-deceiving trick, transforming her into such things, to dazzle your eyes so that you would not recite the spell."

三藏自此一言，就是晦氣到了。From this single remark of Bajie's, Sanzang's ill fortune arrived.果然信那獃子攛唆，手中捻訣，口裡念咒。Sure enough, believing the fool's instigation, he formed the mudra with his hand and began reciting the spell.行者就叫：「頭疼，頭疼。Wukong at once cried out, "My head aches, my head aches.莫念，莫念，有話便說。」唐僧道：「有甚話說？Stop, stop reciting — if you have something to say, just say it." Tang Seng said, "What is there to say?出家人時時常要方便，念念不離善心，掃地恐傷螻蟻命，愛惜飛蛾紗罩燈。One who has left the household should always show mercy at every turn, and never depart from a compassionate heart even in thought — sweeping the ground for fear of harming ants, and cherishing moths enough to shield the lamp with gauze.你怎麼步步行兇，打死這個無故平人，取將經來何用？How is it that at every step you commit violence, killing this innocent person for no reason — of what use is it to go fetch scriptures?你回去罷。」行者道：「師父，你教我回那裡去？」唐僧道：「我不要你做徒弟。」行者道：「你不要我做徒弟，只怕你西天路去不成。」唐僧道：「我命在天，該那個妖精蒸了吃，就是煮了，也算不過。Go back, then." Wukong said, "Master, where would you have me go back to?" Tang Seng said, "I do not want you as my disciple." Wukong said, "If you do not want me as your disciple, I fear you will not be able to complete your journey to the Western Heaven." Tang Seng said, "My fate is in Heaven's hands — if it is decreed that some demon steam me and eat me, or even boil me, there is nothing to be done about it.終不然，你救得我的大限？In the end, could you save me from my ultimate fate?你快回去。」行者道：「師父，我回去便也罷了，只是不曾報得你的恩哩。」唐僧道：「我與你有甚恩？」那大聖聞言，連忙跪下叩頭道：「老孫因大鬧天宮，致下了傷身之難，被我佛壓在兩界山。Go back at once." Wukong said, "Master, it would be all very well for me to go back, only I have not yet repaid your kindness." Tang Seng said, "What kindness have I done you?" Hearing this, the Great Sage hastily knelt down and kowtowed, saying, "Old Monkey, because of my great havoc in Heaven, brought upon myself this disaster of bodily suffering, and was pinned beneath the Mountain of Two Frontiers by our Buddha.幸觀音菩薩與我受了戒行，幸師父救脫吾身。Fortunately Bodhisattva Guanyin gave me the precepts, and fortunately you, Master, rescued me from that place.若不與你同上西天，顯得我知恩不報非君子，萬古千秋作罵名。」原來這唐僧是個慈憫的聖僧，他見行者哀告，卻也回心轉意道：「既如此說，且饒你這一次，再休無禮。If I do not accompany you all the way to the Western Heaven, it would show that I know kindness and do not repay it, no gentleman at all, and I would bear an infamous name for all eternity." Now Tang Seng was by nature a compassionate and merciful sacred monk, and seeing Wukong plead so piteously, his heart softened and he relented, saying, "Since you put it this way, I will forgive you this once, but never be so discourteous again.如若仍前作惡，這咒語顛倒就念二十遍。」行者道：「三十遍也由你，只是我不打人了。」卻才伏侍唐僧上馬，又將摘來桃子奉上。If you continue to do evil as before, I will recite this spell twenty times over without stopping." Wukong said, "Even thirty times would be fine by me, only I will not strike people anymore." Then at last he helped Tang Seng back onto the horse, and also offered up the peaches he had picked.唐僧在馬上也吃了幾個，權且充饑。Riding on the horse, Tang Seng ate a few of them as well, to stave off his hunger for the time being.

卻說那妖精脫命昇空，原來行者那一棒不曾打殺妖精，妖精出神去了。Now it is told that the demon, having escaped with her life, rose up into the sky — for in truth Wukong's cudgel blow had not killed the demon at all, since the demon had let her spirit slip free.他在那雲端裡咬牙切齒，暗恨行者道：「幾年只聞得講他手段，今日果然話不虛傳。Up in the clouds she gnashed her teeth in fury, silently cursing Wukong, "For years I have only heard tell of his skill, and today I find the talk was indeed no exaggeration.那唐僧已是不認得我，將要吃飯。That Tang monk already failed to recognize me, and was on the point of eating the food.若低頭聞一聞兒，我就一把撈住，卻不是我的人了？Had he but lowered his head to smell it, I would have seized him at once — and would he not then have been mine?不期被他走來，弄破我這勾當，又幾乎被他打了一棒。Never did I expect that fellow would come along and spoil my scheme, and I very nearly took a blow from his cudgel besides.若饒了這個和尚，誠然是勞而無功也，我還下去戲他一戲。」If I let this monk go now, it would truly be labor spent for nothing — I will go down once more and toy with him a little."

却说那妖精脱命升空，原来行者那一棒不曾打杀妖精，妖精出神去了。他在那云端里咬牙切齿，暗恨行者道：「几年只闻得讲他手段，今日果然话不虚传。那唐僧已是不认得我，将要吃饭。若低头闻一闻儿，我就一把捞住，却不是我的人了？不期被他走来，弄破我这勾当，又几乎被他打了一棒。若饶了这个和尚，诚然是劳而无功也，我还下去戏他一戏。」

好妖精，按落陰雲，在那前山坡下搖身一變，變作個老婦人，年滿八旬，手拄著一根彎頭竹杖，一步一聲的哭著走來。The fine demon brought down the dark cloud, and there at the foot of the front mountain slope shook herself and transformed into an old woman, full eighty years of age, leaning on a bamboo staff with a crooked handle, weeping and wailing with every step as she came.八戒見了，大驚道：「師父，不好了，那媽媽兒來尋人了。」唐僧道：「尋甚人？」八戒道：「師兄打殺的定是他女兒，這個定是他娘尋將來了。」行者道：「兄弟莫要胡說，那女子十八歲，這老婦有八十歲，怎麼六十多歲還生產？Seeing her, Bajie cried out in alarm, "Master, this is bad — that old granny has come looking for someone." Tang Seng said, "Looking for whom?" Bajie said, "The one Elder Brother struck dead just now must surely have been her daughter, and this must surely be her mother come looking for her." Wukong said, "Brother, do not talk such nonsense — that girl was eighteen years old, and this old woman is eighty; how could someone past sixty still be bearing children?斷乎是個假的，等老孫去看來。」This is certainly a false thing — let old Monkey go and have a look."

好妖精，按落阴云，在那前山坡下摇身一变，变作个老妇人，年满八旬，手拄著一根弯头竹杖，一步一声的哭著走来。八戒见了，大惊道：「师父，不好了，那妈妈儿来寻人了。」唐僧道：「寻甚人？」八戒道：「师兄打杀的定是他女儿，这个定是他娘寻将来了。」行者道：「兄弟莫要胡说，那女子十八岁，这老妇有八十岁，怎么六十多岁还生产？断乎是个假的，等老孙去看来。」

好行者，拽開步，走近前觀看，那怪物：The fine Wukong strode forward and drew near to look, and that monster:

行者認得他是妖精，更不理論，舉棒照頭便打。Wukong recognized her at once as the demon, and without further argument raised his cudgel and struck straight at her head.那怪見棍子起時，依然抖擻，又出化了元神，脫真兒去了，把個假屍首又打死在山路傍之下。Seeing the cudgel descend, the monster again braced herself and let her true spirit slip free, escaping once more, leaving a false corpse struck dead at the roadside on the mountain path.

行者认得他是妖精，更不理论，举棒照头便打。那怪见棍子起时，依然抖擞，又出化了元神，脱真儿去了，把个假尸首又打死在山路傍之下。

唐僧一見，驚下馬來，睡在路傍，更無二話，只是把緊箍兒咒顛倒足足念了二十遍。At this sight, Tang Seng, terrified, tumbled off his horse and lay by the roadside, and without another word began reciting the tight-fillet spell over and over, a full twenty times.可憐把個行者頭勒得似個亞腰兒葫蘆，十分疼痛難忍，滾將來哀告道：「師父莫念了，有甚話說了罷。」唐僧道：「有甚話說？Poor Wukong — his head was squeezed until it looked like a waisted gourd, the pain unbearable, and he rolled about pleading, "Master, stop reciting — if you have something to say, say it and be done." Tang Seng said, "What is there to say?出家人耳聽善言，不墮地獄。One who has left the household should heed only virtuous words, that he not fall into hell.我這般勸化你，你怎麼只是行兇？I have been urging and reforming you like this, yet how is it you only go on with violence?把平人打死一個，又打死一個，此是何說？」行者道：「他是妖精。」唐僧道：「這個猴子胡說，就有這許多妖怪？You have killed one innocent person, and now killed another — what explanation is there for this?" Wukong said, "She was a demon." Tang Seng said, "This monkey talks nonsense — are there really so many demons about?你是個無心向善之輩，有意作惡之人，你去罷。」行者道：「師父又教我去？You are one with no heart set toward goodness, and every intention bent on evil — be gone with you." Wukong said, "Master, you tell me to go again?回去便也回去了，只是一件不相應。」唐僧道：「你有甚麼不相應處？」八戒道：「師父，他要和你分行李哩。Going back would be all very well, but there is one thing that does not sit right." Tang Seng said, "What is it that does not sit right with you?" Bajie said, "Master, he wants to split the luggage with you.跟著你做了這幾年和尚，不成空著手回去？After following you all these years as a monk, is he to go back empty-handed?你把那包袱內的甚麼舊褊衫，破帽子、分兩件與他罷。」Give him a couple of things from the bundle — some old worn robe, some broken hat — and divide it with him."

唐僧一见，惊下马来，睡在路傍，更无二话，只是把紧箍儿咒颠倒足足念了二十遍。可怜把个行者头勒得似个亚腰儿葫芦，十分疼痛难忍，滚将来哀告道：「师父莫念了，有甚话说了罢。」唐僧道：「有甚话说？出家人耳听善言，不堕地狱。我这般劝化你，你怎么只是行凶？把平人打死一个，又打死一个，此是何说？」行者道：「他是妖精。」唐僧道：「这个猴子胡说，就有这许多妖怪？你是个无心向善之辈，有意作恶之人，你去罢。」行者道：「师父又教我去？回去便也回去了，只是一件不相应。」唐僧道：「你有甚么不相应处？」八戒道：「师父，他要和你分行李哩。跟著你做了这几年和尚，不成空著手回去？你把那包袱内的甚么旧褊衫，破帽子、分两件与他罢。」

行者聞言，氣得暴跳道：「我把你這個尖嘴的夯貨！Hearing this, Wukong was so enraged he leapt about, "You sharp-mouthed lump of a fool!老孫一向秉教沙門，更無一毫嫉妒之意，貪戀之心，怎麼要分甚麼行李？」唐僧道：「你既不嫉妒貪戀，如何不去？」行者道：「實不瞞師父說，老孫五百年前，居花果山水簾洞大展英雄之際，收降七十二洞邪魔，手下有四萬七千小怪，頭戴的是紫金冠，身穿的是赭黃袍，腰繫的是藍田帶，足踏的是步雲履，手執的是如意金箍棒，著實也曾為人。Old Monkey has followed the Buddhist teaching all this while with never a trace of envy or covetous greed in my heart — why would I want to split any luggage?" Tang Seng said, "If you feel no envy or greed, why not just go?" Wukong said, "To tell you the truth, Master, five hundred years ago, in the days when I made a great show of my heroism at the Water Curtain Cave on the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit, subduing the evil demons of seventy-two caves, I had under my command forty-seven thousand junior demons; I wore a cap of purple gold, a robe of ochre yellow, a belt of blue jade at my waist, cloud-treading boots on my feet, and held in my hand the ruyi gold-banded cudgel — I truly was somebody in my day.自從涅槃罪度，削髮秉正沙門，跟你做了徒弟，把這個金箍兒勒在我頭上，若回去，卻也難見故鄉人。Ever since I passed through my nirvana of sin and was tonsured to uphold the true gate of Buddhism, following you as your disciple, this gold fillet has been clamped upon my head, and if I go back now, I would find it hard indeed to face the people of my old home.師父果若不要我，把那個鬆箍兒咒念一念，退下這個箍子，交付與你，套在別人頭上，我就快活相應了，也是跟你一場。If, Master, you truly do not want me, then recite the loosening-fillet spell, and let this band come off, and I will hand it over to you, to put upon someone else's head, and then I would go off happy and content — that too would count as having served you a while.莫不成這些人意兒也沒有了？」唐僧大驚道：「悟空，我當時只是菩薩暗受一卷緊箍兒咒，卻沒有甚麼鬆箍兒咒。」行者道：「若無松箍兒咒，你還帶我去走走罷。」長老又沒奈何道：「你且起來，我再饒你這一次，卻不可再行兇了。」行者道：「再不敢了。Could it be that even this small consideration is not to be granted?" Tang Seng was greatly astonished, "Wukong, at the time the Bodhisattva only secretly taught me a Tight-Fillet Spell — there is no such thing as a Loosening-Fillet Spell." Wukong said, "If there is no Loosening-Fillet Spell, then you must still take me along after all." The old monk, having no other choice, said, "Get up then — I will forgive you this once more, but you must never again act with violence." Wukong said, "I will not dare to again.再不敢了。」又伏侍師父上馬，剖路前進。I will not dare to again." Once more he helped his master onto the horse, and hacked a path forward.

行者闻言，气得暴跳道：「我把你这个尖嘴的夯货！老孙一向秉教沙门，更无一毫嫉妒之意，贪恋之心，怎么要分甚么行李？」唐僧道：「你既不嫉妒贪恋，如何不去？」行者道：「实不瞒师父说，老孙五百年前，居花果山水帘洞大展英雄之际，收降七十二洞邪魔，手下有四万七千小怪，头戴的是紫金冠，身穿的是赭黄袍，腰系的是蓝田带，足踏的是步云履，手执的是如意金箍棒，著实也曾为人。自从涅槃罪度，削发秉正沙门，跟你做了徒弟，把这个金箍儿勒在我头上，若回去，却也难见故乡人。师父果若不要我，把那个松箍儿咒念一念，退下这个箍子，交付与你，套在别人头上，我就快活相应了，也是跟你一场。莫不成这些人意儿也没有了？」唐僧大惊道：「悟空，我当时只是菩萨暗受一卷紧箍儿咒，却没有甚么松箍儿咒。」行者道：「若无松箍儿咒，你还带我去走走罢。」长老又没奈何道：「你且起来，我再饶你这一次，却不可再行凶了。」行者道：「再不敢了。再不敢了。」又伏侍师父上马，剖路前进。

卻說那妖精原來行者第二棍也不曾打殺他。Now it is told that the demon — in truth Wukong's second blow of the cudgel had not killed her either.那怪物在半空中誇獎不盡道：「好個猴王，著然有眼，我那般變了去，他也還認得我。That monster, up in midair, praised him without end, saying: 'What a Monkey King — truly sharp-eyed. However I transformed myself, he still recognized me.'這些和尚他去得快，若過此山，西下四十里，就不伏我所管了。These monks travel fast — if they cross this mountain, forty li to the west, they'll be beyond my jurisdiction.若是被別處妖魔撈了去，好道就笑破他人口，使碎自家心。If they were snatched away by some demon from elsewhere, it would surely split others' sides with laughter, and break my own heart with vexation.我還下去戲他一戲。」I'll go down and toy with him once more."

却说那妖精原来行者第二棍也不曾打杀他。那怪物在半空中夸奖不尽道：「好个猴王，著然有眼，我那般变了去，他也还认得我。这些和尚他去得快，若过此山，西下四十里，就不伏我所管了。若是被别处妖魔捞了去，好道就笑破他人口，使碎自家心。我还下去戏他一戏。」

好妖精，按聳陰風，在山坡下搖身一變，變做一個老公公，真個是：What a fine demon — she pressed down a dark wind and, at the foot of the mountain slope, gave her body a shake and transformed into an old man. She was indeed:

唐僧在馬上見了，心中大喜道：「阿彌陀佛！Seeing this from atop his horse, Tang Seng was overjoyed, and said: 'Amitabha!'西方真是福地，那公公路也走不上來，逼法的還念經哩。」八戒道：「師父，你且莫要誇獎，那個是禍的根哩。」唐僧道：「怎麼是禍根？」八戒道：「師兄打殺他的女兒，又打殺他的婆子，這個正是他的老兒尋將來了。'The West is truly a land of blessings — even that old man, who can barely walk the road, is forced by devotion to recite scriptures still.' Bajie said: 'Master, don't be so quick to praise him — that one is the root of disaster.' Tang Seng said: 'How is he the root of disaster?' Bajie said: 'Elder brother beat his daughter to death, and beat his wife to death too — this is exactly her old husband come looking for them.'我們若撞在他的懷裡啊，師父，你便償命，該個死罪；If we run straight into his arms, Master, you'll have to pay with your life — a capital crime;把老豬為從，問個充軍；and old Zhu here, as an accomplice, will be sentenced to military exile;沙僧喝令，問個擺站。and Sha Seng, for his part, will be sentenced to relay-station service.那師兄使個遁法走了，卻不苦了我們三個頂缸？」and elder brother will use an escape spell and get away — wouldn't that leave the three of us to bear the blame in his place?"

唐僧在马上见了，心中大喜道：「阿弥陀佛！西方真是福地，那公公路也走不上来，逼法的还念经哩。」八戒道：「师父，你且莫要夸奖，那个是祸的根哩。」唐僧道：「怎么是祸根？」八戒道：「师兄打杀他的女儿，又打杀他的婆子，这个正是他的老儿寻将来了。我们若撞在他的怀里啊，师父，你便偿命，该个死罪；把老猪为从，问个充军；沙僧喝令，问个摆站。那师兄使个遁法走了，却不苦了我们三个顶缸？」

行者聽見道：「這個獃根，這等胡說，可不諕了師父？Hearing this, Xingzhe said: 'This idiot, talking such nonsense — won't it frighten the Master?'等老孫再去看看。」他把棍藏在身邊，走上前，迎著怪物，叫聲：「老官兒，往那裡去？'Let old Sun go take another look.' He hid his cudgel at his side, walked forward, and approaching the monster, called out: 'Old sir, where are you headed?'怎麼又走路，又念經？」那妖精錯認了定盤星，把孫大聖也當做個等閑的，遂答道：「長老啊，我老漢祖居此地，一生好善齋僧，看經念佛。'Why are you walking along and reciting scriptures at the same time?' The demon, utterly misjudging the situation, took the Great Sage Sun for an ordinary man too, and so replied: 'Reverend sir, my old family has lived here for generations. All my life I have loved doing good — feeding monks, reading scriptures, and chanting to the Buddha.'命裡無兒，止生得一個小女，招了個女婿。Fate gave me no son — I bore only one little daughter, and took in a son-in-law.今早送飯下田，想是遭逢虎口。This morning she went down to the fields to bring food, and I fear she has fallen into a tiger's jaws.老妻先來找尋，也不見回去。My old wife went out earlier to search for her, and she too has not come back.全然不知下落，老漢特來尋看。With no idea at all of their whereabouts, I have come especially to search and look.果然是傷殘他命，也沒奈何，將他骸骨收拾回去，安葬塋中。」行者笑道：「我是個做��虎的祖宗，你怎麼袖子裡籠了個鬼兒來哄我？'If indeed their lives have been taken, there is nothing to be done but gather their bones and carry them home to bury in the family plot.' Xingzhe laughed and said: 'I am the very ancestor of tiger-impersonators — how dare you hide a ghost up your sleeve to fool me?'你瞞了諸人，瞞不過我，我認得你是個妖精。」那妖精諕得頓口無言。You may deceive everyone else, but you cannot deceive me — I recognize you for a demon." The demon, terrified, was struck speechless.行者掣出棒來，自忖道：「若要不打他，顯得他倒弄個風兒；Xingzhe drew out his cudgel and thought to himself: 'If I don't strike him, it will look as though he's gotten the better of me with his trickery;若要打他，又怕師父念那話兒咒語。」又思量道：「不打殺他，他一時間抄空兒把師父撈了去，卻不又費心勞力去救他？but if I do strike him, I fear Master will recite that spell.' He thought further: 'If I don't beat him to death, he'll find some idle moment to snatch Master away — and then won't I have to exhaust myself again to go and save him?還打的是。Better to strike him after all.就一棍子打殺，師父念起那咒，常言道：『虎毒不吃兒。』憑著我巧言花語，嘴伶舌便，哄他一哄，好道也罷了。」好大聖，念動咒語，叫當坊土地、本處山神道：「這妖精三番來戲弄我師父，這一番卻要打殺他。'Even if I kill him with one stroke of the cudgel and Master starts reciting that spell — well, as the saying goes: "Even a vicious tiger does not eat its own cubs." With my clever words and glib tongue, I can coax and talk him round, and that should settle it.' What a Great Sage — he recited a spell and summoned the local land-god and the mountain spirit of that place, saying: 'This demon has come three times now to toy with my master — this time I mean to beat him to death.你與我在半空中作證，不許走了。」眾神聽令，誰敢不從，都在雲端裡照應。You are to bear witness for me up in midair, and see that he does not get away.' Hearing the order, the assembled gods dared not disobey, and all stood watch among the clouds.那大聖棍起處，打倒妖魔，才斷絕了靈光。Where the Great Sage's cudgel fell, it struck the demon down, and only then was its spirit-light extinguished.

行者听见道：「这个呆根，这等胡说，可不諕了师父？等老孙再去看看。」他把棍藏在身边，走上前，迎著怪物，叫声：「老官儿，往那里去？怎么又走路，又念经？」那妖精错认了定盘星，把孙大圣也当做个等闲的，遂答道：「长老啊，我老汉祖居此地，一生好善斋僧，看经念佛。命里无儿，止生得一个小女，招了个女婿。今早送饭下田，想是遭逢虎口。老妻先来找寻，也不见回去。全然不知下落，老汉特来寻看。果然是伤残他命，也没奈何，将他骸骨收拾回去，安葬茔中。」行者笑道：「我是个做𡤫虎的祖宗，你怎么袖子里笼了个鬼儿来哄我？你瞒了诸人，瞒不过我，我认得你是个妖精。」那妖精諕得顿口无言。行者掣出棒来，自忖道：「若要不打他，显得他倒弄个风儿；若要打他，又怕师父念那话儿咒语。」又思量道：「不打杀他，他一时间抄空儿把师父捞了去，却不又费心劳力去救他？还打的是。就一棍子打杀，师父念起那咒，常言道：『虎毒不吃儿。』凭著我巧言花语，嘴伶舌便，哄他一哄，好道也罢了。」好大圣，念动咒语，叫当坊土地、本处山神道：「这妖精三番来戏弄我师父，这一番却要打杀他。你与我在半空中作证，不许走了。」众神听令，谁敢不从，都在云端里照应。那大圣棍起处，打倒妖魔，才断绝了灵光。

那唐僧在馬上又諕得戰戰兢兢，口不能言。Tang Seng, up on his horse, was again so terrified that he trembled all over, unable to speak.八戒在傍邊又笑道：「好行者，風發了，只行了半日路，倒打死三個人。」唐僧正要念咒，行者急到馬前叫道：「師父莫念，莫念，你且來看看他的模樣。」卻是一堆粉骷髏在那裡。Bajie, standing to the side, laughed again and said: 'Fine Xingzhe — gone mad, has he! We've traveled only half a day's journey, and already he's beaten three people to death.' Just as Tang Seng was about to recite the spell, Xingzhe hurried before the horse and cried: 'Master, don't recite it, don't recite it — come and look at what he really looks like first.' And there indeed lay a heap of powdery bones.唐僧大驚道：「悟空，這個人才死了，怎麼就化作一堆骷髏？」行者道：「他是個潛靈作怪的僵尸，在此迷人敗本，被我打殺，他就現了本相。Tang Seng was greatly startled and said: 'Wukong, this person only just died — how has he already turned into a pile of bones?' Xingzhe said: 'He was a corpse-spirit haunting this place in secret, bewitching people and ruining their fortunes. Once I struck him down, he showed his true form.'他那脊梁上有一行字，叫做『白骨夫人』。」唐僧聞說，倒也信了。On his spine there is a line of characters that read "Lady White Bone."" Hearing this, Tang Seng was actually persuaded.怎禁那八戒傍邊唆嘴道：「師父，他的手重棍兇，把人打死，只怕你念那話兒，故意變化這個模樣，掩你的眼目哩。」唐僧果然耳軟，又信了他，隨復念起。But how could that withstand Bajie egging him on at his side: 'Master, his hand is heavy and his cudgel vicious — he beat a person to death, and now, fearing you'll recite that spell, he has deliberately transformed the corpse into this shape to blind your eyes.' Tang Seng, being soft of ear indeed, believed him once more, and at once began reciting the spell again.行者禁不得疼痛，跪於路傍，只叫：「莫念，莫念，有話快說了罷。」唐僧道：「猴頭，還有甚說話？Unable to bear the pain, Xingzhe knelt by the roadside, crying out only: 'Don't recite it, don't recite it — if you have something to say, say it quickly!' Tang Seng said: 'Monkey-head, what more is there to say?出家人行善，如春園之草，不見其長，日有所增；For one who has left the household life, doing good is like the grass in a spring garden — you do not see it grow, yet day by day it increases;行惡之人，如磨刀之石，不見其損，日有所虧。for one who does evil, it is like a whetstone — you do not see it wear away, yet day by day it diminishes.你在這荒郊野外，一連打死三人，還是無人檢舉，沒有對頭；Here in this wild and desolate countryside, you have beaten three people to death one after another, and as it happens no one has reported it, and there is no accuser to face you;倘到城市之中，人煙湊集之所，你拿了那哭喪棒，一時不知好歹，亂打起人來，撞出大禍，教我怎的脫身？but should we come to a city, a place crowded with people, and you take up that mourner's staff of yours and, not knowing friend from foe, start striking people wildly, and bring on some great disaster — how could I ever extricate myself?你回去罷。」行者道：「師父錯怪了我也。You had better go back." Xingzhe said: "Master, you wrong me.這廝分明是個妖魔，他實有心害你。This creature was plainly a demon — he truly meant to harm you.我倒打死他，替你除了害，你卻不認得，反信了那獃子讒言冷語，屢次逐我。I struck him dead instead, and rid you of the harm — yet you fail to see this, and instead believe that idiot's slanderous, cold-hearted words, driving me away again and again.常言道：『事不過三。』我若不去，真是個下流無恥之徒。As the saying goes: 'A thing should not happen more than three times.' If I do not go now, I would truly be a low and shameless fellow.我去，我去。I'll go, I'll go.去便去了，只是你手下無人。」唐僧發怒道：「這潑猴越發無禮。Going is going, but then you'll have no one at hand." Tang Seng grew angry and said: "This impudent ape grows more insolent still.看起來，只你是人，那悟能、悟淨就不是人？」It would seem that only you count as a person — are Wuneng and Wujing not people, then?"

那大聖一聞得說他兩個是人，止不住傷情悽慘，對唐僧道聲：「苦啊！On hearing them called people, the Great Sage could not hold back his grief and anguish, and said to Tang Seng: 'Oh, the bitterness of it!你那時節出了長安，有劉伯欽送你上路。When you first set out from Chang'an, it was Liu Boqin who saw you onto the road.到兩界山，救我出來，投拜你為師。Reaching Liangjie Mountain, you freed me, and I took you as my master.我曾穿古洞，入深林，擒魔捉怪，收八戒，得沙僧，吃盡千辛萬苦。I have passed through ancient caves and entered deep forests, capturing demons and seizing monsters, taking in Bajie and gaining Sha Seng, enduring every kind of hardship and suffering.今日昧著惺惺使糊塗，只教我回去。And today, with clear eyes wide open, you play the fool, and simply order me to go back.這才是：『鳥盡弓藏，兔死狗烹！』罷，罷，罷，但只是多了那緊箍兒咒。」唐僧道：「我再不念了。」行者道：「這個難說。This is truly a case of: 'When the birds are gone, the bow is put away; when the hare is dead, the hound is cooked!' Enough, enough, enough — only, there is still that Tight-Fillet Spell to reckon with." Tang Seng said: "I will never recite it again." Xingzhe said: "That's hard to say.若到那毒魔苦難處不得脫身，八戒、沙僧救不得你，那時節想起我來，忍不住又念誦起來。If you should come upon some vicious demon or dire hardship from which you cannot free yourself, and Bajie and Sha Seng cannot save you, then, thinking of me at such a time, you won't be able to help yourself and will start reciting it again.就是十萬里路，我的頭也是疼的，假如再來見你，不如不作此意。」Even a hundred thousand li away, my head would still ache — so if I were to come and see you again after that, it would be better not to have had such a thought at all."

那大圣一闻得说他两个是人，止不住伤情凄惨，对唐僧道声：「苦啊！你那时节出了长安，有刘伯钦送你上路。到两界山，救我出来，投拜你为师。我曾穿古洞，入深林，擒魔捉怪，收八戒，得沙僧，吃尽千辛万苦。今日昧著惺惺使糊涂，只教我回去。这才是：『鸟尽弓藏，兔死狗烹！』罢，罢，罢，但只是多了那紧箍儿咒。」唐僧道：「我再不念了。」行者道：「这个难说。若到那毒魔苦难处不得脱身，八戒、沙僧救不得你，那时节想起我来，忍不住又念诵起来。就是十万里路，我的头也是疼的，假如再来见你，不如不作此意。」

He rolled off his saddle and dismounted, told Sha Seng to fetch paper and brush from the bundle, drew water from the stream below, ground ink on a stone, and wrote out a letter of dismissal, which he handed to Xingzhe, saying: 'Monkey-head, keep this as proof — I no longer want you as my disciple;如再與你相見，我就墮了阿鼻地獄。」行者連忙接了貶書道：「師父，不消發誓，老孫去罷。」他將書摺了，留在袖內，卻又軟款唐僧道：「師父，我也是跟你一場，又蒙菩薩指教，今日半塗而廢，不曾成得功果，你請坐，受我一拜，我也去得放心。」唐僧轉回身不睬，口裡唧唧噥噥的道：「我是個好和尚，不受你歹人的禮。」大聖見他不睬，又使個身外法，把腦後毫毛拔了三根，吹口仙氣，叫：「變！」即變了三個行者，連本身四個，四面圍住師父下拜。'if I ever see you again, may I fall into Avici Hell.' Xingzhe hastily took the letter of dismissal and said: 'Master, there's no need to swear an oath — old Sun will go.' He folded the letter and kept it tucked in his sleeve, then spoke gently to Tang Seng once more: 'Master, I have followed you through this whole journey, and moreover received the Bodhisattva's instruction — now, today, to give it up halfway, without having achieved the merit of our task... please sit, and accept a bow from me, so that I may leave with an easy mind.' Tang Seng turned his body away and paid him no heed, muttering under his breath: 'I am a good monk — I will not accept a bow from a wicked man like you.' Seeing that he was ignored, the Great Sage used a body-outside-the-body technique: he plucked three hairs from the back of his head, blew a breath of immortal breath onto them, and called out: 'Change!' They at once transformed into three more Xingzhes, who together with his own body made four, and surrounded the master on all sides to bow down.那長老左右躲不脫，好道也受了一拜。The elder, unable to dodge them left or right, had no choice but to accept the bow after all.

Tang Seng said: "I am a good monk — I will not so much as speak your wicked name. Go back now."

大圣跳起来，把身一抖，收上毫毛，却又吩咐沙僧道：「贤弟，你是个好人，却只要留心防著八戒𧮪言𧮪语，途中更要仔细。倘一时有妖精拿住师父，你就说老孙是他大徒弟，西方毛怪闻我的手段，不敢伤我师父。」唐僧道：「我是个好和尚，不题你这歹人的名字，你回去罢。」
