Guanyin Revives the Manfruit Tree

026Chapter 26

A poem says:

:「Now, Master Zhenyuan took hold of Xingzhe's arm with his hand and said, "I too know your abilities, and I too have heard of your fame — but this time you have overstepped reason and deceived your own conscience; however much you can shift and dodge, you will not escape my grasp.西Even if I argued with you all the way to the Western Heaven and saw that Buddha of yours, you still could not avoid restoring my ginseng fruit tree to me.。」:「Don't try any magic powers on me." Xingzhe laughed and said, "You, sir, are being so petty and small-minded.If you want the tree brought back to life, what's so difficult about that??」:「!」:「?」:「。」:「。」If you'd said so earlier, wouldn't it have saved all this quarreling?" The Great Immortal said, "Without a quarrel, would I be willing to let you off so easily!" Xingzhe said, "Release my master, and I'll give you back a living tree — how about that?" The Great Immortal said, "If you truly have such magic power that you can heal the tree back to life, I will bow to you eight times and become sworn brothers with you." Xingzhe said, "No trouble at all — let them go, and old Sun guarantees to give you back a living tree."

The Great Immortal, reckoning that he could not escape, at once ordered Sanzang, Bajie, and Sha Seng to be released.:「。」:「』。Sha Seng said, "Master, I don't know what trick our elder brother is up to." Bajie said, "What trick? This is what's called 'playing the favor-to-your-face trick.'The tree is dead — can it really be cured back to life?。」:「He's just putting on a fine show for looks, using the pretext of seeking a cure for the tree simply to slip away and make his escape — will he even give a thought to you and me?" Sanzang said, "He would never dare abandon us.。」:「?」:「?」:「?」:「:『。』。」:「?」:「。」:「Let's ask him where he intends to go to seek a cure." So he called out, "Wukong, how have you deceived the Immortal Elder into releasing us?" Xingzhe said, "Old Sun spoke true and honest words — how could I have deceived him?" Sanzang said, "Where will you go to seek a remedy?" Xingzhe said, "The ancients said, 'Remedies come from over the sea.' I intend now to go to the Eastern Ocean, to travel all through the Three Islands and Ten Continents, to seek out the immortal elders and sacred sages, and to beg for a method of reviving the dead, so as to make sure the tree is cured and brought back to life." Sanzang said, "How long before you can return from this journey?" Xingzhe said, "It will take only three days." Sanzang said, "Very well then, I will do as you say and grant you a limit of three days.便If you return within three days, all will be well;。」:「。」but if you have not returned after three days, I will recite that spell." Xingzhe said, "As you command, as you command."

:「Just watch him hastily straighten his tiger-skin skirt and go out the door to say to the Great Immortal, "Rest easy, sir — I'll go and come right back. But you must take good care to attend to my master, providing three teas and six meals every single day without fail;If there's the slightest shortfall, when old Sun comes back I'll settle accounts with you — first I'll smash the bottom out of your cooking pots. If his clothes get soiled, have them properly washed and starched for him.If his face turns even a little sallow, I won't have it;。」:「。」and if he grows even a little thinner, you're not leaving this place." The Great Immortal said, "Go on, go on — I will certainly not let him go hungry."

Splendid Monkey King — he at once sprang onto his cloud-somersault, took leave of Five Villages Abbey, and headed straight for the Eastern Ocean.Up in midair, swift as flashing lightning, fast as a shooting star, he soon reached the immortal realm of Penglai.Bringing down his cloud, he looked carefully below — truly a wonderful place. There is a poem to prove it.The poem says:

Xingzhe, unable to take in all the immortal scenery, went straight into Penglai.祿Just as he was walking along, he saw, outside White Cloud Cave, beneath the shade of the pines, three old men gathered around a game of chess — the one watching the game was the Star of Longevity, and those playing against each other were the Star of Fortune and the Star of Prosperity.:「。」 :「西?」:「西?」:「Xingzhe stepped forward and called out, "Little brothers, greetings to you." When the Three Stars saw him, they pushed aside the chessboard and returned the courtesy, saying, "Great Sage, where have you come from?" Xingzhe said, "I've come especially to find you all for some fun." The Star of Longevity said, "I heard that the Great Sage abandoned Daoism to follow Buddhism, risking your life to protect Tang Seng on his journey west to fetch the scriptures, hurrying along mountain roads day after day — how do you have any leisure to come and play?" Xingzhe said, "To tell you the truth, and hide nothing, old Sun was on the way west and met with some obstruction along the road; I've come specially with a small matter I wish to ask of you — I wonder if you'd be willing?" The Star of Fortune said, "What place is it?and why the obstruction?。」:「。」:「?」:「?」:「Please explain it clearly so that we may decide how to handle it." Xingzhe said, "It's because passing by Five Villages Abbey on Longevity Mountain I ran into trouble." The three elders said in astonishment, "Five Villages Abbey is the immortal palace of the Great Immortal Zhenyuan — could it be that you stole and ate his ginseng fruit?" Xingzhe laughed and said, "What's it worth, just stealing a bite to eat?" The three elders said, "You monkey, you don't know what's good for you.Merely smelling that fruit gives one three hundred and sixty years of life.Eating one gives forty-seven thousand years of life.It is called the Ten-Thousand-Longevity Herb-Returning Elixir. Our own attainments in the Dao fall far short of it.He obtains it so easily, and with it can attain a lifespan equal to Heaven's;調whereas we must still nurture our essence, refine our breath, preserve our spirit, harmonize the dragon and tiger, and seize kan to fill li — there's no telling how much effort that takes. How can you say it's worth so little?。」:「。」:「?」In all the world there is only this one kind of sacred root." Xingzhe said, "Sacred root, sacred root — well, I've already made it root-severed for him." The three elders exclaimed in shock, "How is it root-severed?"

:「Xingzhe said, "The other day when we were in his abbey, the Great Immortal was not at home; there were only two young page-boys who received my master, and they offered two ginseng fruits to my master.滿My master didn't recognize what they were, and insisted they were infants not yet three days old, and refused again and again to eat them. The page-boys then took them away and ate them themselves, without offering us any.So old Sun went and stole three of them, and the three of us brothers ate them. Those page-boys, not knowing their place, kept cursing us endlessly as thieves, front and back.Old Sun got angry and struck the tree a blow with my staff, knocking it to the ground — every fruit on the tree vanished, the branches split apart and the leaves fell, the roots were exposed and the boughs damaged, and it had already withered and died.Unexpectedly, the page-boys shut us in, but old Sun twisted the lock open and we got away. The next morning at dawn, that immortal gentleman hurried home, and in the course of our exchange, words did not agree, so we fought him — but with just a flick, he spread open his robe sleeve and swept all of us up inside it.We were bound with ropes and cords, interrogated and whipped, and beaten for a whole day. That night we escaped again, but he caught up with us again and swept us up inside just as before. He carried not a single weapon on him, only using a whisk to block and parry, yet with our three kinds of weapons among us brothers, there was no hope of landing a blow on him. This time he again arranged things as before, wrapping my master and my two fellow disciples in cloth and lacquering them over, while he put me into a pot of boiling oil.I again used my skill at slipping free and got away, and I smashed his pot to pieces in the process.Seeing that he could not hold onto me, he came to feel a certain grudging respect for me.So I reasoned with him again in good faith, and had him release my master and fellow disciples, in exchange for my guaranteeing to cure the tree back to life — only then did the two sides find peace.』,I remembered the saying 'remedies come from over the sea,' and so I came specially touring these immortal realms to visit you three, my little brothers.。」If there is any remedy for curing trees, please pass one on to me, so that I may urgently save Tang Seng from his suffering."

:「When the Three Stars heard this, they too felt troubled at heart and said, "You monkey, you have no idea at all whom you're dealing with. That Zhenyuanzi is the Patriarch of the Earthly Immortals;we are but the Ancestors of the Divine Immortals;though you have attained the rank of Celestial Immortal, you are still only of the scattered ranks of Taiyi, not yet admitted into the true stream — how could you ever escape his grasp? If the Great Sage had killed some running beast or flying bird, some insect or scaled creature, then my millet-grain elixir alone would suffice to bring it back to life. But that ginseng fruit is the root of an immortal tree — how could it be cured?。」There is no remedy, no remedy." When Xingzhe heard there was no remedy, his brows knit together like locked peaks, and his forehead furrowed with a thousand creases.:「?」:「The Star of Fortune said, "Great Sage, there is no remedy here, but there may be one elsewhere — why trouble yourself so?" Xingzhe said, "If there's none here, seeking elsewhere is indeed easy enough; even touring every corner of sea and sky, passing clean through all thirty-six heavens, would be a small matter. It's only that my Elder Tang is strict in his rules and narrow in his tolerance, and has given me a limit of only three days;。」:「。」:「if I fail to return within three days, he will recite that tight-fillet spell." The Three Stars laughed and said, "Good, good, good — if not for this method to restrain you, you'd go bursting off through the heavens again." The Star of Longevity said, "Great Sage, set your mind at ease, there is no need to trouble yourself. That Great Immortal, though he is reckoned a senior generation, is nonetheless an acquaintance of ours. For one thing, it has been long since we parted and we have not yet paid him a visit;。」:「and for another, there is the Great Sage's personal favor to consider: so now the three of us will go together to pay him a visit, and we will convey this matter to him on your behalf, so that the Tang monk will not recite the tight-fillet spell — never mind three or five days, we will wait until you have obtained the remedy and returned before we take our leave." Xingzhe said, "Much obliged, much obliged.。」Please, you three little brothers, go on ahead then — I'll be on my way." The Great Sage took his leave of the Three Stars, and no more is said of that for now.

Now to tell of the Three Stars: they mounted their auspicious light and headed straight for Five Villages Abbey.Everyone in the abbey suddenly heard the cry of cranes across the long heavens — it turned out to be the arrival of the Three Elders.Behold:

:「。」When the immortal page-boys saw them, they hastened to report, "Master, the Three Stars from over the sea have come!" Zhenyuanzi, who was just then chatting idly with Tang Seng and his disciples, hearing the report, at once came down the steps to receive them respectfully.:「。」 :「。」:「。」 退Bajie, seeing the Star of Longevity, stepped up and grabbed hold of him, laughing, "You fat-headed old fellow, haven't seen you in ages, and you're still just as carefree — didn't even bring a hat along." Whereupon he plopped one of his own monk's caps right down onto the old man's head, clapped his hands, and roared with laughter, "Good, good, good — truly this is 'adding a cap, advancing to prosperity'!" The Star of Longevity flung the cap off and scolded, "You great lout, you truly don't know your place." Bajie said, "I'm no lout — you lot are the real servants." The Star of Fortune said, "You're the lout, and yet you dare call us servants?" Bajie laughed again and said, "If you're not somebody's servants, then why are you properly called 'Adding Longevity,' 'Adding Fortune,' and 'Adding Prosperity'?" Sanzang shouted Bajie back and hurriedly straightened his robe to bow to the Three Stars.

The Three Stars greeted the Great Immortal with the courtesy due from juniors, and only then did they take their seats to converse.祿:「Once seated, the Star of Prosperity said, "It has been long indeed since we last beheld your honored face.。」:「?」:「We have failed in proper respect; today, because Great Sage Sun has been disturbing our immortal mountain, we have come specially to see you." The Great Immortal said, "So Sun Xingzhe went to Penglai?" The Star of Longevity said, "Yes — because he damaged the Great Immortal's elixir tree, he came to us seeking a remedy to cure it.We had no remedy, and so he has gone elsewhere to seek one; but we feared he might overrun the holy monk's three-day limit and have the tight-fillet spell recited upon him.。」:「。」So we have come, firstly to pay our respects, and secondly to beg for an extension of the limit." Hearing this, Sanzang repeatedly assented, "I would not dare recite it, I would not dare."

Just as they were speaking, Bajie came running in again, grabbed hold of the Star of Fortune, and demanded fruit to eat.He groped wildly inside his sleeves and dug about at his waist, ceaselessly lifting his robes to search him.:「!」:「』。」Sanzang laughed and said, "Bajie, what manner of behavior is this!" Bajie said, "It's not bad manners — this is called 'every turn brings fortune.'" Sanzang again scolded him and ordered him out.The idiot stepped out the door, glaring fiercely at the Star of Fortune without so much as blinking.:「?」:「』。」殿The Star of Fortune said, "You lout, when have I ever offended you, that you should hate me so?" Bajie said, "It's not that I hate you — this is called 'turning back to gaze upon fortune.'" Once the idiot had gone out the door, he saw a young page-boy carrying four tea spoons, just then going to find cups, fetch fruit, and prepare tea, and he snatched them away in one grab, ran up into the hall, seized a small chime-stone, and began banging and striking it wildly with his hands, playing about with both ends of it.:「。」:「』。」The Great Immortal said, "This monk grows more disrespectful by the moment." Bajie laughed and said, "It's not disrespect — this is called 'the four seasons' auspicious celebration.'"

But let us leave aside Bajie's clowning and mischief for now.Let us instead tell of Xingzhe, who, mounting his auspicious cloud, left Penglai and soon arrived at the immortal mountain of Fangzhang — truly a wonderful place, this mountain. There is a poem to prove it.The poem says:

Xingzhe brought his cloud down, having no heart to enjoy the scenery.Just as he was walking along, he caught the scent of fragrant winds wafting richly and heard the cry of black cranes — over on that side was an immortal.Behold:

:「。」:「Sun Xingzhe went forward to greet him with an open face, calling out, "Sovereign Lord, my greetings to you." The Sovereign Lord hastily returned the courtesy, saying, "Great Sage, forgive me for failing to welcome you properly.。」Please come to my humble abode and take some tea." So he took Xingzhe by the hand and led him inside. It was indeed a shell-gated immortal palace — one could never take in all of its jade pools and gemmed pavilions.Just as they sat down awaiting tea, a young page-boy came around from behind the kingfisher-green screen. How was he dressed?

:「When Xingzhe saw him, he laughed and said, "So this little thief is here after all.!」:「Are there no peaches at the Sovereign Lord's place for you to steal and eat!" Dongfang Shuo bowed toward his lord in courtesy, then answered, "You old thief, what have you come here for?。」As if there were no elixirs of my master's for you to steal and eat."

:「。」The Sovereign Lord called out, "Manqian, stop talking nonsense — bring the tea." Manqian was in fact Dongfang Shuo's Daoist name; he hastily went inside and fetched two cups of tea.:「?」:「When they had finished drinking, Xingzhe said, "Old Sun has come here on a matter I wish to trouble you with — I don't know whether you will consent." The Sovereign Lord said, "What matter is it?。」 :「I shall of course be glad to hear it." Xingzhe said, "Recently, while escorting Tang Seng westward, we passed by Five Villages Abbey on Longevity Mountain; because those page-boys of his behaved improperly, I lost my temper for a moment and knocked down his ginseng fruit tree, and now we are held up for the time being, unable to free Tang Seng to proceed. I have come specially to your honored abode to beg the gift of a remedy to cure it — I earnestly hope you will be so generous." The Sovereign Lord said, "You monkey, giving no thought to consequences, causing trouble everywhere you go.That Zhenyuanzi of Five Villages Abbey, whose sacred title is 'Lord Equal to the World,' is the Patriarch of the Earthly Immortals — how could you go and offend him? That ginseng fruit tree of his is the Herb-Returning Elixir; your stealing and eating of it was offense enough as it was;?」:「and then on top of that you knocked down the very tree — would he be willing to let that pass?" Xingzhe said, "Just so.We managed to get away, but he caught up with us and, treating us just like a handkerchief, swept us all up inside one sleeve — that's how we came to be stuck.。」:「With no other choice, I promised him I would seek a remedy to cure it, and so I have come to beg one of you." The Sovereign Lord said, "I have a single grain of the Nine-Times-Refined Taiyi Returning Elixir, but it can only cure living creatures of the mortal world — it cannot cure a tree.A tree is the spirit of earth and wood, nourished by Heaven and moistened by Earth. If it were an ordinary fruit tree of the mortal world, a cure might still be possible;。」but this Longevity Mountain is a blessed land of the primordial world, Five Villages Abbey is a grotto-heaven of Hezhou Continent, and the ginseng fruit is a sacred root that came into being with the very opening of Heaven and Earth — how could it possibly be cured? There is no remedy, no remedy."

:「。」:「。」Xingzhe said, "Since there is no remedy, old Sun will take his leave." The Sovereign Lord still wished to keep him for a cup of jade nectar, but Xingzhe said, "The matter of urgent rescue presses hard — I dare not linger long." So he mounted his cloud once more and went on to the sea island of Yingzhou, likewise a fine place. There is a poem to prove it.The poem says:

When the Great Sage reached Yingzhou, he saw, beneath the vermilion cliffs and pearl trees, several white-haired and white-bearded elders, immortals with the faces of children and the temples of cranes, there playing chess and drinking wine, laughing and talking, singing and chanting.Truly it was:

Those old men were just then enjoying themselves freely.:「便?」Xingzhe called out loudly in a stern voice, "What harm would it do to let me join in the fun?" When the assembled immortals saw him, they hastened forward to welcome him. There is a poem to prove it.The poem says:

:「。」:「Wukong recognized them as the Nine Elders and said with a laugh, "You old brothers are certainly at ease." The Nine Elders said, "If the Great Sage had stayed on the right path back then and not thrown Heaven's Palace into chaos, you would be even more at ease than we are.西?」Now it's all turned out well — we hear you've returned to the truth and are heading west to worship the Buddha. How do you have the leisure to come here?" Wukong then related in full the matter of seeking a remedy to heal the tree.:「The Nine Elders were also greatly astonished and said, "You really do court trouble, court trouble!。」We truly have no remedy for this."

:「。」漿Wukong said, "Since you have no remedy, I shall take my leave." The Nine Elders again urged him to stay and drink the jade nectar and eat the jade-green lotus root.漿Wukong absolutely refused to sit, and only standing, drank one cup of nectar and ate one piece of lotus root, then hurriedly left Yingzhou and turned straight back to the Eastern Sea.Before long he sighted Mount Luojia not far off, so he brought his cloud down and went straight to Putuo Crag, where he saw the Bodhisattva Guanyin in the Purple Bamboo Grove expounding sutras and preaching the Dharma to the various heavenly generals, Mucha, and the Dragon Girl. There is a poem as proof. The poem reads:

The Bodhisattva had already seen Wukong arriving and at once ordered the mountain-guarding great god to go and greet him.:「?」:「That great god came out of the grove and called out, "Sun Wukong, where are you off to?" Wukong raised his head and shouted, "You bear-cub, is 'Wukong' something you get to call me?If old Sun hadn't spared you back then, you would already have become a corpse-ghost of Heifeng Mountain.』?」Today you follow the Bodhisattva, have received the fruits of goodness, dwell on this immortal mountain, and constantly listen to the teachings of the Dharma — can't you call me 'my lord' just once?" That black bear had indeed attained the right fruit, guarding Putuo at the Bodhisattva's place and being called a great god — and this too he owed to Wukong.:「:『。』He could only smile apologetically and say, "Great Sage, the ancients said: 'A gentleman does not dwell on old wrongs.' Why keep bringing it up?。」The Bodhisattva sent me to welcome you." Wukong then composed himself with proper respect and reverence, and went together with the great god into the Purple Bamboo Grove to pay homage to the Bodhisattva.

:「?」:「。」:「The Bodhisattva said, "Wukong, how far has Tang Monk traveled?" Wukong said, "He has reached Wanshou Mountain in Xiniuhezhou, the Western Continent." The Bodhisattva said, "On that Wanshou Mountain there is the Wuzhuang Monastery — have you met the Great Immortal Zhenyuan there?" Wukong kowtowed and said, "It was because at the Wuzhuang Monastery, this disciple, not recognizing the Great Immortal Zhenyuan, damaged his ginseng-fruit tree and offended him, that he has now detained my master and will not let him proceed." The Bodhisattva, understanding the matter, rebuked him: "You reckless ape, you don't know good from bad — that ginseng-fruit tree of his is a sacred root formed when Heaven and Earth first opened.?」:「Zhenyuanzi is the ancestor of earthly immortals — even I yield him a measure of deference. How could you go and injure his tree?" Wukong bowed again and said, "This disciple truly did not know. That day he was not at home, and there were only two immortal boys attending to us.It was Zhu Wuneng who learned that he had those fruits and wanted one to taste as a novelty; this disciple did indeed steal three of them, and the brothers divided them and ate them. When the boys became aware of it, they cursed at us without end, and this disciple grew angry and knocked his tree down.He returned the next day, caught up with us, swept all of us up into his sleeve, bound us with rope, whipped us, and tortured us for a whole day. That very night we escaped, but he caught up with us again and once more swept us up in his sleeve.Time and again, there was truly no escaping him.We already promised to heal his tree for him, and I have just now been seeking a remedy over the seas, touring all three isles, but none of the immortals there had the ability to help.西。」:「?」This disciple therefore comes with wholehearted devotion to pay homage, specially beseeching the Bodhisattva, and humbly hopes in your mercy you will graciously grant a remedy, so as to help Tang Monk proceed west all the sooner." The Bodhisattva said, "Why didn't you come to see me sooner, instead of going to search on the isles?"

:「。」Hearing these words, Wukong secretly rejoiced in his heart, thinking, "What luck, what luck — the Bodhisattva must surely have a remedy." He stepped forward again to entreat her.:「。」:「?」:「。」:「?」:「The Bodhisattva said, "This sweet dew water at the bottom of my pure vase is excellent for healing immortal trees and sacred saplings." Wukong said, "Has it ever been tested?" The Bodhisattva said, "It has been tested." Wukong asked, "What was the test?" The Bodhisattva said, "Once, Laozi the Grand Supreme wagered a contest with me: he took my willow sprig away, put it in his elixir-refining furnace, scorched it dry and brittle, and sent it back to me.。」:「I took it and inserted it into the vase, and within a day and a night it regained its green branches and leaves, exactly as before." Wukong laughed and said, "What a stroke of luck, what a stroke of luck!?」:「。」If even something scorched to a crisp can be healed and revived, then what difficulty could there be with one that's merely been knocked down?" The Bodhisattva instructed the assembly: "Watch over the grove — I'll go and come right back." She then took up the pure vase in her hand, and with the white parrot warbling sweetly ahead of her, the Great Sage Sun followed close behind. There is a poem as proof. The poem reads:

:「。」殿Now to tell of the monastery: the Great Immortal and the Three Elders were in the midst of pleasant conversation when suddenly they saw the Great Sage Sun bring his cloud down and call out, "The Bodhisattva has come, quick, go and receive her, quick!" In their flurry, the Three Stars and Zhenyuanzi, together with Tripitaka and his disciples, all went out together to welcome her from the precious hall.Only then did the Bodhisattva halt her auspicious cloud; she first exchanged pleasantries with Zhenyuanzi, then paid courtesies to the Three Stars, and after the courtesies were done, took the seat of honor. There before the steps, Wukong led Tang Monk, Bajie, and Sha Monk in all making their obeisance. The various immortals of the monastery also came to pay their respects.:「。」:「?」:「。」:「。」Wukong said, "Great Immortal, there's no need to hesitate — quickly set out the incense altar and invite the Bodhisattva to go and heal that fruit tree of yours." The Great Immortal bowed and thanked the Bodhisattva, saying, "This is such a trifling matter — how would I dare trouble the Bodhisattva to descend for it?" The Bodhisattva said, "Tang Monk is my disciple; since Sun Wukong offended you, sir, it is only right that he make amends for your precious tree." The Three Elders said, "Since that is so, there's no need for further modest talk — please, Bodhisattva, come along to the garden to have a look."

The Great Immortal at once ordered the incense altar to be set up and the back garden swept clean, and invited the Bodhisattva to go ahead, with the Three Elders following behind. When Tripitaka and his disciples, along with all the immortals of the monastery, arrived at the garden to look, they saw that tree lying fallen on the ground, the soil split open with its roots exposed, its leaves fallen and its branches withered.:「。」The Bodhisattva called, "Wukong, hold out your hand." Wukong stretched out his left hand. The Bodhisattva dipped the willow sprig into the sweet dew in the vase and traced a life-restoring talismanic character in the palm of Wukong's hand, telling him to place it beneath the tree's roots and wait until water appeared as the sign.Wukong clenched his fist and pressed it beneath the tree's roots, and in a moment a pool of clear spring water appeared.:「。」:「。」 The Bodhisattva said, "That water must not come into contact with any vessel of the Five Elements — it must be ladled out with a jade dipper, and the tree must be propped upright and the water poured down from the top; then naturally the roots and bark will rejoin, leaves will grow and shoots sprout, branches turn green and fruit appear." Wukong said, "Little Taoist boys, hurry and fetch a jade dipper." Zhenyuanzi said, "This poor Taoist's humble mountain has no jade dipper — only jade teacups and jade wine cups. Would those do?" The Bodhisattva said, "As long as it's jade ware that can scoop up water, that will do — bring them here for me to see." The Great Immortal at once ordered the young page boys to bring out some twenty or thirty teacups and forty or fifty wine cups, and with these they ladled out the clear spring water from beneath the roots.Wukong, Bajie, and Sha Monk lifted the tree up, propped it straight and true, banked the soil up around it, and then, cup by cup, offered up the sweet spring water in the jade vessels to the Bodhisattva. The Bodhisattva sprinkled it carefully over the tree with the willow sprig, all the while reciting sutra-spells with her mouth. Before long, all the ladled-out water had been sprinkled clean, and sure enough the tree was seen to be green and lush with leaves as before, with twenty-three ginseng fruits upon it.:「The two boys Qingfeng and Mingyue said, "The other day, when we found the fruits missing, we counted only twenty-two, oddly enough;?」:「『。』。」:「。」so today, now that it's come back to life, how is there one extra?" Wukong said, "'Time reveals a person's true heart.' The other day old Sun only stole three; that one fruit fell to the ground, and the Earth God said this treasure, upon meeting earth, sinks into it. Bajie kept hollering that I'd secretly kept one back for myself, and so word of it got out and the matter dragged on until just now, when it's finally become clear." The Bodhisattva said, "The reason I just now would not use a vessel of the Five Elements is that I knew this thing is averse to the Five Elements, that's all."

The Great Immortal was overjoyed, and hastily ordered the golden knocker brought, striking down ten of the fruits, then invited the Bodhisattva and the Three Elders back to the precious hall — first to thank them for their trouble, and second to hold a ginseng-fruit banquet.調The young immortals then arranged the tables and chairs, laid out cinnabar trays, and invited the Bodhisattva to take the seat of honor at the head, the Three Elders the seat on the left, Tang Monk the seat on the right, and Zhenyuanzi the seat facing them to keep company, and each of them ate one fruit. There is a poem as proof. The poem reads:

At this time the Bodhisattva and the Three Elders each ate one; Tang Monk, only now learning it was a treasure of the immortals, also ate one; Wukong and the other two likewise each ate one; Zhenyuanzi ate one in their company; and the assembled immortals of the monastery shared one among themselves.Only then did Wukong thank the Bodhisattva, who returned to Putuo Crag, while he saw the Three Stars off straight back to Penglai Isle.Zhenyuanzi then also arranged a vegetarian feast with wine, and became sworn brothers with Wukong. This was truly a case of "no fight, no friendship" — the two parties became as one family.Master and disciples, all four of them, rejoiced happily, and when night fell they rested. The elderly monk was truly:

In the end, how they took their leave the next day is not yet known; listen to the next chapter's explanation.

What it’s about

Freed to seek a cure, Wukong flies across the seas to the Three Star Immortals and to the Ten Continents and Three Islands, but none of the sages knows how to revive a dead ginseng tree. At last he goes to Guanyin on Potalaka, who alone can do it, and she returns with him carrying her willow sprig and her vase of sweet dew.

Guanyin sprinkles the dew on the shattered roots, and the tree stands up whole, green and heavy again with its child-shaped fruit. Zhenyuan, delighted, holds a ginseng-fruit banquet, and he and Wukong swear brotherhood on the spot. The quarrel that began with a single stolen fruit ends in feasting and friendship, and the pilgrims leave the mountain on the warmest of terms.

When it was written 背景

This 回 resolves the ginseng episode and quietly reinforces the book's hierarchy: even the immortals of the Ten Continents cannot help, but Guanyin's compassion and her healing dew can. It is a rare arc that ends not with a monster subdued but with a reconciliation and a sworn brotherhood. Learners should follow Wukong's tour of failed helpers as a small map of the novel's cosmology, and note that mercy, not force, is what repairs the damage his temper caused.
